- 0:00Let's go back to 1992. Let's talk about what are your
- 0:04remembrances or reflections on on that first race on concrete
- 0:08in 92. Kyle, we'll start with you.
- 0:09I think you were in that race and had a good run.
- 0:12I never had a good run at Bristol, so yeah, here's what
- 0:15so, so the two things I remember was how rough it was, Honestly,
- 0:20when we first got here. If everybody remembers, when we
- 0:22first went out you just talked about how this place just
- 0:26chattered your teeth and and that car and they did a lot of
- 0:30work on this racetrack. They ground, they they put down.
- 0:32I mean they did everything they could to make it happen and and
- 0:37we've never seen anything like this really.
- 0:39You know what I mean? I mean if you come in here you
- 0:41didn't think they were going to be able to put up concrete and
- 0:44and they did. But it was just it was the
- 0:46roughness and the abrasiveness of what the racetrack was.
- 0:50The other thing was I is this is just a a a stupid cow, petty
- 0:54thing. Watching the race, I can't, I
- 0:58think the Saturday race and listening on TV or radio, I
- 1:02can't remember which one it was. So I don't want to call anybody
- 1:04out in particular, but somebody spun for like the first time on
- 1:09TV and the smoke had a like a greenish hue to it as A and they
- 1:15were like, look at that. When you spin on concrete, the
- 1:19concrete makes a green smoke first.
- 1:21When you spin, rubber makes the smoke, not the concrete.
- 1:25You know what I mean? It's the rubber.
- 1:27That's where the smoke comes from.
- 1:28But it was so funny because everything that happened on
- 1:31concrete appeared to be different than what it did on on
- 1:36the asphalt. But once the race started, it
- 1:37wasn't. It wasn't.
- 1:38It was just a race track. Yeah, thank you, Kyle King.
- 1:41Richard, what about your thoughts and you you retired at
- 1:45the end of 1992, so this would this would have been August?
- 1:48I was so busy just doing everything except a racetrack, I
- 1:52guess. I I don't remember.
- 1:54I know the old 92 season was just a fog.
- 1:59I was busy doing all the retirement part and all that and
- 2:03my racing deal was just a sideline.
- 2:06And you know, I guess we're so busy up here.
- 2:10I I really don't remember the race.
- 2:12I know I didn't finish very good, but I never finished very
- 2:16good in 92 anyway. But if it was a wreck out there,
- 2:20I probably got into it. So, you know, by the time they
- 2:26first started this track, it was one way kind of a pretty nice
- 2:31race track. And then they banked it a little
- 2:33bit and then they changed it again.
- 2:36And I was I'd never won a lot of.
- 2:41I'd won three races, I think in 75 or 76 somewhere longer and
- 2:48other than that my finish is at Bristol.
- 2:51I never look forward to going to Bristol because I never finished
- 2:53good. Well it was certainly certainly
- 2:57a a different animal, although you had so much success
- 2:59everywhere else, you went and did win here I think three times
- 3:02as you said. Well how about a nine time win
- 3:05Richard Childress Racing and won here 9 times and RC your
- 3:09thoughts about 92 if you remember back then?
- 3:11Or are basically them changing this track to concrete?
- 3:14You know, it's kind of go along with Kyle there.
- 3:17I can remember that tire wear was one of our same as we have
- 3:21today. Tire wear was one thing we're
- 3:24all worried about and Dale was driving the car and he wasn't a
- 3:29big fan of concrete. I can tell you 92 wasn't a good
- 3:32year for us either. You know, we'd won championships
- 3:35in 19919394, but you had those off years.
- 3:39But it was different. You know, even just like
- 3:42Martin's, where we have concrete today in Bristol, I mean Dover.
- 3:46It's a different animal that takes a little different
- 3:49thinking and set up, but I got to sit here and think about as a
- 3:53driver. My favorite, most memorable trip
- 3:57up here was when I drove the King's car back in the 70s.
- 4:02Gave out or something heavy was sick.
- 4:04I can't remember what happened, but I never will forget them
- 4:07cramming cushions in behind me. Odell Inman Cramming Hill was
- 4:10behind me where I could reach the pedals, but we did OK that
- 4:14we came. That's one of my favorite
- 4:17memories as a driver. That's great RC Joe, your
- 4:21thoughts about 92 concrete or distract sense?
- 4:25Yeah, I actually, I think that was our first year if I got this
- 4:29right, and Dale Jarrett's driving the car and it was our
- 4:34best finish that we had for the entire year.
- 4:37We didn't win a race. We were getting kicked all over
- 4:40the place and I remember Dale though said he loved this place
- 4:44and we finished second and so that was my first memory of
- 4:48being here. The second thing that happened,
- 4:51we started our drag racing team and we were back here.
- 4:55You know, this thing is awesome when you hear those Top Fuel
- 4:59cars and stuff go through there and the sound and everything
- 5:03from that is unreal. We finished our NHRA deal after
- 5:08four years. We set a record.
- 5:09We blew up more stuff than anybody's ever seen.
- 5:12So that was second. So let me give you my personal
- 5:15favorite memory of Bristol. We came here, Norm Miller came
- 5:19with me, our founding sponsor, with his wife.
- 5:23And so we had a helicopter in. And so after the race it got
- 5:27foggy and they said the helicopters are done.
- 5:31And I said, Oh my gosh, now what are we going to do?
- 5:33And we started walking and we went all the way down the hill
- 5:38and we went down to the service station at the bottom of the
- 5:41hill down there. So I look and there's this kid
- 5:45with a pickup truck. And so I walked over to him and
- 5:47I said, hey, you want to make 100 bucks?
- 5:50And he went, yeah, I said, do you know where the airport is?
- 5:55And he goes, yeah, we got in back of the pickup and we're
- 6:00driving. Let let me say this.
- 6:02It was a memory I'll never forget because it was kind of
- 6:05foggy and the and the and the we were in to those valleys going
- 6:11into complete fog, coming out the other side.
- 6:13A beautiful moon there. I think it was one of the
- 6:16prettiest rides that we ever had.
- 6:18And we went for 45 minutes and next thing you know, poop.
- 6:21We popped up right at the racetrack.
- 6:22So that's my most favorite memory.
- 6:25I think we almost got rid of our sponsor, but other than that
- 6:28we're OK. I I got to say, so favorite
- 6:31memory. I'm going to throw one in here.
- 6:33So I'm out. I'm typical.
- 6:36I think we'd switched to Dodge and I blew up or wrecked or
- 6:39something and Danny Lawrence come out.
- 6:42I was, I was changing clothes out in the van out in the bus
- 6:45and Danny Lawrence said Kevins sick.
- 6:47Harvick is sick. Can you come, come get in Kevins
- 6:50car? And I'm like, my left butt cheek
- 6:53wouldn't fit in the seat of Kevin Harvin.
- 6:56You know what I mean? I mean, that's how simple it
- 6:57was. I mean, I want you to think
- 6:58about Kevin. When he started, I came down
- 7:00here and then y'all crammed me in that car and I I was, I drove
- 7:04the whole. But whatever part, I love it.
- 7:06I drove. I drove the last part of the
- 7:08race on my left side. I sat on my left cheek with my
- 7:12right foot facing this way, and I'd gas and brake with the same
- 7:16because I couldn't use my left leg at all in the car.
- 7:19And we went out and I I didn't wreck.
- 7:22That was all you were supposed to do when?
- 7:24You were really a dwell. When you because y'all were in
- 7:26the points y'all were trying to you had to get some points but
- 7:28it was that was the coolest thing was to was to be able to
- 7:32get in in your car and the children's car up here.
- 7:35I I relieved drove for him one time and once for Bonnet up here
- 7:40for Neil's. Got to drive one of Junior's
- 7:42cars up here. So that was.
- 7:43Those are two good memories for me up here.
- 7:45Hey King, do you have a memory? Do you have a favorite memory
- 7:47overall of of? He never listen.
- 7:49He never relief drove for anybody.
- 7:50He just mailed and run out and think people got into his car.
- 7:52He didn't get into somebody. Else's car.
- 7:54I got in Pearson's car. Oh yeah.
- 7:57Did you really? Yeah, I don't know what happened
- 7:59in here. And I got in some boys from
- 8:02Virginia somewhere in here. I got in his car and I'm like
- 8:08you. I I couldn't get I couldn't get
- 8:10down in the in the seat so I was just sitting up on top of it.
- 8:14I think I drove about maybe 150 laps and stuff told guys I got
- 8:19to get out of this thing. I'm I'm suffering more than a
- 8:22car. So you know, other than that I I
- 8:27I just remember how many times I wrecked up here and probably
- 8:32half the time it was my fault. But it was a very at that
- 8:39particular time the drivers didn't have the seats.
- 8:41They didn't have the stuff around their neck, all that
- 8:44stuff. And I know the first, first time
- 8:48we run up or one of the times we run up here my neck gave out
- 8:51with me and I was going around the track like this.
- 8:54And so I don't even think we had, we didn't have radios at
- 8:59that time And any somehow or another me and Dale communicated
- 9:05and so I said OK, we've got to do something to prop my neck up.
- 9:10And at that time the tires came in with an extra deal in and had
- 9:17a a rubber around the the wheel just just a rubber band.
- 9:23And Dale said I came down PIT Rd. with my arm out the window
- 9:28because what they done, they pulled that thing up, put it
- 9:30around my arm here and then wrapped it around my head so
- 9:34that I can overthink it up. Wow, that was the.
- 9:37That was the first neck neck restriction I guess for.
- 9:41The handmade, the homemade Hon device.
- 9:46We got to wrap this up and I want to ask one more question
- 9:48because I've asked this to RC. We've asked it when we're
- 9:50sitting there relaxing with a beverage or two in the past.
- 9:53But two of the big memories here at Bristol were the three Car
- 9:58and Terry, Labonte, Dale and Terry and Richard.
- 10:00Your take in those 95 and again in 99, did Dale do anything
- 10:05wrong? Never in my eyes, you know, I'll
- 10:08tell you a quick story. I know we all got to go to work
- 10:10here, but after one of those wrecks that I don't forget which
- 10:15one it Dale and Terry got into it.
- 10:18I think we won the race and Mike Skinner was driving for me and I
- 10:22did an autograph session at Lowe's and I left there and I
- 10:25come back and I stopped at a Hardee's there to get me a
- 10:28sandwich to go down the road and I walked in this I can't mature
- 10:32lady, they're mature now at my age.
- 10:34So this mature lady come up to me and she said.
- 10:38I hate you and I. Hate that driver, I thought.
- 10:40She's going to whip me right there.
- 10:42But that's my remembering. Yeah, we had some fun up here.
- 10:46Yeah, I need to be. I need to be Richard's PR person
- 10:48for a minute. He meant to say.
- 10:50Incident. He didn't mean to say Rex.
- 10:52He meant to say after the second incident, not after that's.
- 10:57Right. Yeah.
- 10:58Never admit any guilt when when all you're really doing is
- 11:01rattling someone's case. That's true.
- 11:02That's an incident. Guys, thanks so much for taking
- 11:05the time to come out and talk about the great memories of
- 11:07Ristol and the Concrete. Because folks, the Concrete is
- 11:09back and we're turning back the clock to 92.
- 11:12And hopefully we're going to have a race that's even better
- 11:15than what we've seen in the past here today for the Food City
- 11:18500. Thanks so much guys.
- 11:19Thank you guys. Thank you guys.
- 11:21Thank you.
