- 1:15We do the show from the Barmars Store studio. If there's not a
- 1:17part of our store near you now there will be soon to to day Island
- 1:19show in five Adil I brought to you by Thornhill Otter Group including Thornhill GM
- 1:23Superstore where it's Chevy Truck season. We have got a lot to get to
- 1:27this morning. Of course, the big story is the flooding. Now we'll
- 1:30go ahead and say top of the show gave our good friend Hannah Gardner from
- 1:34the Canall Charles Mumaine Association the day off from the Adopt Me Please Pet of
- 1:37the Week segment. Hannah will return to the show next week. We actually
- 1:41had some water, quite a bit of water at the shelter. No animals
- 1:44were heard or anything like that, but I talked to him last night and
- 1:48said, yeah, we may just goquead and give you the day off.
- 1:49We are going to have a flooding update a little bit later on from the
- 1:53Mayor of Charleston, Amy Shuiler. Good one who's going to join this plus
- 1:57some happier notes to get to a little bit later on. We are going
- 2:00to be joined by Michael Lipton from the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame classes
- 2:04twenty twenty five will be adopted tomorrow, are not adopted to be an out
- 2:08so I should say, tomorrow over at Capitol Market and we're going to talk
- 2:12to Michael about that. Plus there's a very special fundraiser going on as it
- 2:15pertains to an educator from the nitro community, and we are going to get
- 2:20some details on that coming up a little bit later on too. Let me
- 2:23go now first though, to a Kanak County Commissioner, Carper. Commissioner Carper,
- 2:27Good morning, Welcome to the show. Good, good morning, Dave,
- 2:30thanks for having me, Thanks for being here. We have played this
- 2:32game before. Last week, as a matter of fact, it was tornadoes
- 2:38that we were looking at, and then what we thought, Commissioner was going
- 2:43to be a tornado out break yesterday actually turned out to be more of a
- 2:49of the severe situation as far as the heavy rains and the flooding goes late
- 2:53afternoon into the actually into the overnight hours. What can you tell us about
- 2:57where we are right now, sir, Well, unfortunately, even though it
- 3:00didn't look that bad according to some people, we went ahead it and activated
- 3:07our EOC at one point thirty and then fully activated it about eight o'clock.
- 3:13The bottom line is we had a lot of calls. I don't know how
- 3:16many calls because we're having trouble counting them. Nine to one one Center was
- 3:22just overwhelmed. I think the biggest damage is the western part of the county.
- 3:29However, having said that, if you've got five feet of water in
- 3:31your front of your house or in your basement, you consider yourself to be
- 3:36the most damper or I understand that. One anecdote I will tell you,
- 3:43And because I'm so proud of the nine to one one Center, you know,
- 3:46in the twenty sixteen flood, I don't know if you remember this or
- 3:50not, but our nine one one dispatcher throughout the state sometimes the last person
- 3:55to talk to people before they drowned. So that still hangs over the head
- 4:00of some of our telecommunicators who participated in that flood. Here, they had
- 4:08similar cases where a woman was trapped in her car in a Systemville area actually
- 4:14beat her window out of her car because she couldn't roll the windows down,
- 4:17and then crawled on top of the car. Now, the nine one one
- 4:23telecommunicators generally don't recommend that. However, in this particular case. I think
- 4:29everybody made the right call because she's with us today. That's just one example
- 4:34of some of the calls. The calls were fast and furious. What we'll
- 4:40do now is do damage assessment. We were hoping we can get a disaster
- 4:45declaration that might give some relief to the homeowners. But as you know,
- 4:49Dave, the federal government has become stingy when it comes to dds. Yeah,
- 4:56yeah, and you are exactly right. So what kind of a timeframeer?
- 5:00Let me back up and say, so you're going to try to get
- 5:02this disaster declaration done? How long does that process normally take? I know
- 5:08you're dealing with the government, sir, and you couldn't you completely understand that.
- 5:11And as I said, you've been through a lot of these. But
- 5:13what kind of a time frame could we possibly be looking at here? Well,
- 5:15we're from the government, we're here to help, but it takes us
- 5:18a while to get around to it. I would say thirty days or so.
- 5:24Pete, my guess where are we right now? As far as the
- 5:28situations with the flood? I know you don't you can't tell us about all
- 5:31of them, but I know and we have had some rain rolling through the
- 5:34area this morning. Although it is light rain, which is it looks like
- 5:38the heavy stuff at least is out of here. What are you hearing out
- 5:41there as far as right down nine Am, as far as any road blockages
- 5:45or things of that nature, Well, we've got roads blocked's basically in
- 5:47the Smith Road area, out towards far Road, out towards Tornado Coal River
- 5:57area. A lot of roads are blocked still and that's sporadic throughout the county,
- 6:01mainly from trades that have fallen down and blocked the roadway. Now a
- 6:05lot of them have been cut up. Volunteer fireman, let me just say
- 6:10this, what would we do without our fire service, our career and our
- 6:15volunteer fireman. I mean, I take nothing away from the depties, take
- 6:19nothing away from the police. They did a heck of a job. But
- 6:24the truth of the matter is the backbone of a rescue effort on this one
- 6:28is the fire service. All right, Well, come mister Carper. I
- 6:31appreciate you taking time out of your schedule to be here again. This was
- 6:35kind of one of those situations, as I said, top of the segments
- 6:38here where we started by thinking, okay, we're going to have another tornado
- 6:42outbreak, and we didn't, thankfully, but we had a disaster of another
- 6:46kind and the cleanup will continue and hopefully they tell us. My friends at
- 6:49the in the Weather Service tell me that we're going to have some quiet weather
- 6:53for a while, stort and I think we could probably use that here in
- 6:55Kenawa County. Well, I'm here, we're going to have some wind us,
- 7:00okay. And if we have wind guts of any nature, what some
- 7:03whatever the root system on these trains right now. It's true. I didn't
- 7:10think about that. Yeah, just a wind guns for two put trees there.
- 7:13Yeah, it that'd be another issue. And that's when you start dealing
- 7:15more with power out it. Just Commissioner, I appreciate you being here,
- 7:18sir. Thanks a lot. We'll talk again soon, okay, Dave,
- 7:20thank you. Canon County Commissioner K Carper. It is nine fourteen. In
- 7:25the heart of West Virginia, there exists a profound force that goes beyond the
- 7:28realm of sports, transcending limitations and fostering and sensi belonging and talking about special
- 7:31Olympics. A remarkable initiative showcase of the latest episode of West Virginia enriched in
- 7:36collaboration with Huntington, stands as a testament to the power determination, unity and
- 7:41unwavering support. See a video highlighting the Special Olympics at facebook dot com slash
- 7:46five eighty WCCHS. Again, we're talking about the the flooding situations that and
- 7:53the cleanup. And that's something really I hadn't even thought about. Again as
- 7:56it is, I appreciate Commissioner Krper for bringing that up. I had not
- 7:59even really thought about that about with the with the high wind guests. I
- 8:03was thinking more along the lines of like next week it's supposed to be kind
- 8:07of quiet and and so with that, could we could be looking at some
- 8:13some power out it just with the uprooted trees and whatnot. Let's go to
- 8:16Charleston Mayor Amy Goodwin Mayor, good morning, Welcome to the show. Good
- 8:20morning, thanks so much for having me on. Thank you for being here.
- 8:22I know it's kind of a been a long night for your crews here
- 8:26in the city at Charleston. Talk about it. Sure, it's actually been
- 8:30a long, long couple of days. Plus now obviously we are in as
- 8:37Commissioner Carper said, uh, when the eu v UC is activated before fully
- 8:45and then we are engaged with the entire Kanal County team. So in the
- 8:50city of Charleston, we're obviously this morning in recovery mode UH and triaging issues.
- 8:56And recovery just means recovering the streets, recovering drains, recovering UH these
- 9:03places in which people need to cross. We had we had some uh significant
- 9:09flooding. You know, I don't know what the exact numbers are plus three
- 9:13inches record. You know what I'm hearing is record flooding this morning. You
- 9:18know, I've seen pictures, have been on the phone all night and this
- 9:22morning. Sugar Creek works, the Abel Woodward, South russ Chesterfield. If
- 9:28you're by a creek, you have flooding, significant flooding, Dave, and
- 9:33our crews are out, our back hoes are out. So again I sound
- 9:37like a broken record, Dave. Last week I said you'd be patient with
- 9:41us, But our guys are out there moving debris, clearing out those rings.
- 9:48And by the way, if you you know, if you see a
- 9:50drain in the in the right of way or in the roadway that you feel
- 9:54is blocking something, please please call me three three or four three four eight
- 9:58sixty eight fifty. I'll repeat it, Dave three oh four three four eight
- 10:01sixty eight fifty. Obviously, our crews are getting to the ones that we
- 10:07have calls that have already come in through the night. But if there's one
- 10:13that you think we're missing that needs to be done that is in you know,
- 10:16we're triage in right if it's in the right of way, if it's
- 10:18a danger, those are the ones we're hitting first. The keep in mind
- 10:24we've got over eight thousand drains in the city days, so this much of
- 10:30debris and this much water in them is just simply going to cause problems.
- 10:35The other thing I note that we are troubleshooting and have been this morning is
- 10:39you know the reason why I love working in municipal government is we're the closest
- 10:45to the people. Like your trash service today, it's blocked right now the
- 10:50road even though we feel that it will be open. Uh, so we
- 10:54are still out doing trash service today. If today's your trash day, put
- 11:00it out, we're coming to get it. It's again, be patient with
- 11:03us, and you know, just keep us informed as we will keep you
- 11:09informed. Good news, as we have wonderful council members who are out there
- 11:15working alongside our crews. You know Bobby Haas, If you know council member
- 11:20Bobby Hawks or Pat Jones or Janine Fagri, text him or call them and
- 11:26just give them a thanks, because they are also the eyes and the ears
- 11:28of that community who we're keeping in constant contact with here in the Mayor's office
- 11:33and our Emergency services office as well. Dave all right, Mayor, I
- 11:37know you're very busy, you and the staff there. I appreciate you taking
- 11:41time out of your schedule and hopefully we'll get be able to have you back
- 11:43on again when we're not talking about weather related emergencies. Thanks a lot,
- 11:48Mayor. Sure, thank you, all right, Mayor Amy Sure, good
- 11:50one the City of Charleston. It is nine nineteen Dave Allen, showing five
- 11:56Adyline brought to you part by Borga to Morgan in America's largest injury law firm,
- 12:01texts. This was actually a question about the animal shelter. Again.
- 12:05Normally I would be having Handah Gardener on at this time when their adopt me.
- 12:07Please put of the week. But I talked to Hannah last night saiday,
- 12:09maybe maybe we'll just give you this week off because they're trying to clean
- 12:13up some things up there as well. But if we had a text about
- 12:15the animal shelter, I'll try to get an answer. If they're listening to
- 12:18us of Angie or Hannah or somebody out there is listening that says the animal
- 12:20shelters requesting and receiving a lot of donations, wouldn't all the damages be covered
- 12:24by either the U haul insurer or shelters or for the shelter's first party ensure.
- 12:28I do not know the question about that, or I do not know
- 12:33the answer to that. I know the question I just asked them, but
- 12:35I don't know what the answer that question is. I will try to see
- 12:39if I could find out something about that. To Dave Island showing five Ady

- 17:04I don't know why I said it's Sunday. It's Sunday. Well that
- 17:07voice you hears, Michael Lipton, how are you? Man? Hey?
- 17:10Good? Thanks? I said tomorrow. Well, it feels like Saturday to
- 17:14me. Okay. So the Western Music Hall of Fame on Sunday is going
- 17:17to host their garden party that sponsored by Capitol Ford. Michael Lifton joins us
- 17:21to talk about it on Sunday, not Saturday. Welcome to the show,
- 17:22Michael, Hey, thanks. All right. So big happenings over there,
- 17:26Well, yeah, we had done. You know, we call them a
- 17:30garden party because I didn't want to call it a fundraiser because people are fundraisered
- 17:33out and they don't make any money anyhow. It's more for spreading the word
- 17:37and awareness and kind of just having a nice day of food, drinking,
- 17:42music, And I actually had a chance several years ago to attend one of
- 17:45those that you did at Cafe Somino. Yeah, those were sudden. That
- 17:51was that was like ten years ago that that was actually like a pretty cool
- 17:55day, I remember. Yeah, we did them for almost ten years and
- 17:57then virus interrupted things and then they sold the place. So we'd been looking
- 18:03for another place and the Capitol Market just seemed to be the ideal, you
- 18:10know venue. So we're doing it outside under their pavilion in the back.
- 18:14The weather's supposed to be great, and food, drink and music. And
- 18:21as far as music, we have the Parachute Brigade and they were kind of
- 18:26based in Beckley, but they're half based in Charleston now. Really a wonderful
- 18:30group, great singers, great songs. Josh Pantry, who's really popular solo
- 18:38guy. I guess he plays with other people too. And then we're bringing
- 18:42John Ellison and he's a twenty fifteen inductee and he wrote the song some kind
- 18:48of Wonderful, which pretty much everybody knows. In fact, he's getting recognized
- 18:53in June at the Greenbrier by BMI. You of course, you know them
- 19:00publishing Keviny charging everybody money, yes, but for approaching five million plays with
- 19:08Some kind of Wonderful. Amazing. And as you said, there have been
- 19:11so many different versions of that song. I think if you become a musician,
- 19:15Michael, I think they they it's in the contract you have to learn
- 19:18this song because I mean you think about all the different genres of people,
- 19:22and people still love to do it in concerts and bars. And that song
- 19:25emanated from somebody right here in West Virginia. That's cool stuff, Yeah it
- 19:27is. I mean, I don't think there's anybody else in the state who
- 19:32has racked up that many airplays. And the most recent cover version of Some
- 19:38kind of Wonderful was Rod Stewart, Oh, a couple of years ago.
- 19:42Rod can do pretty much anything. I'm a big Rod Stewart. Yeah,
- 19:45he can do he can do just about anything. Yeah. Yeah, No,
- 19:48that was and as John likes to say, he kept his publishing so
- 19:53every time it gets played exactly well, that's good because so many artists of
- 19:59that era did not do that, and they and when you hear their songs,
- 20:03they don't get anything for it. That's what's wonderful. And one of
- 20:06the things I like about John Allison too. Am I gonna make this to
- 20:07John Allison show? But one thing I like about Ellison is he is constantly
- 20:11promoting West Virginia no matter where he goes, and he spends so much time
- 20:17here in West Virginia just because he wants to be. He didn't need to
- 20:18be here, just because he wants to be. Yeah, you know,
- 20:21he's going on either eighty two, I believe, and he just he's an
- 20:29unbelievable performer and singer and entertainer and he has just I wish I had half
- 20:34his energy. And we went out with him. We've been doing a lot
- 20:37of shows with him. We went out for a couple of weeks last summer
- 20:40and traveled through Oh sorry, my cat. Okay, so do you have
- 20:47a cat with you? Yeah, it's on the phone. Oh okay,
- 20:51my daughter put that ring on. So I was gonna say that may be
- 20:56new because normally on Fridays I do a segment called the Adopt Me Please put
- 20:59it the Way, But because I wanted to get Commissioner Carper and Mayor good
- 21:02One on to talk about the flooding, I didn't do the segment this week,
- 21:04and I thought, well, the animals have found me anyway, you
- 21:07can give them a little plug, right, all right, so go ahead.
- 21:11So oh anyhow, so we went out through Ohio and Wisconsin and Michigan
- 21:18and I don't know another state, but for two weeks and he, you
- 21:25know, singing almost every night and he never never ran out of energy.
- 21:30And I'll give your sponsors a little plug. The Pigley Wiggly Bigley people.
- 21:34Yeah, John has a spice called some kind of Wonderful Spice which is available
- 21:40at the big Lely Piggly Wiggly Nice. And when John's in town, he
- 21:44often goes there and he he brings a little guitar and he sings in the
- 21:48banana section and sometimes we go play with him and stuff. Yeah, he's
- 21:52great. I love it. I love it. Uh so? Uh so
- 21:56is that all the musicians that we cover, everybody that's going to be there.
- 21:59And I want to talk about Josh Pantry from one. I don't know
- 22:00this gentleman personally, but I do know that he's popping up everywhere these days,
- 22:06and he has quite the following here in the Kanawh Valley and elsewhere.
- 22:10Yeah, well, we wanted to, you know, I think this is
- 22:14something no matter what. When you start something, it's you. You start
- 22:19using your friends to do stuff, sure well, and that you know that
- 22:23can get a little incestuous. So we're trying to reach out to people we
- 22:27haven't really brought into our folds. And and you know that's both Josh and
- 22:34the parasoper grade. Yeah, it's it's going to be a great, great
- 22:40day. And again you're also going to make the announcement about the Hall of
- 22:41Fame. Is that right? Yeah, thanks for reminding me. Yeah,
- 22:45yeah, we are. It's uh, the ceremony will be almost exactly a
- 22:51year from this coming Sunday, except for next year. Yeah, twenty twenty
- 22:56five. It'll be the tenth ceremony, and it'll also be the twentieth year
- 23:02that we've been an organization. And so yeah, we about have everything figured
- 23:07out. And it takes the better part of a year to put this event
- 23:11together. There's a lot that goes into it. We create these little mini
- 23:15movies for each of the inductees and which Michael Valentine does, want to give
- 23:21him a little plug because he's great and you know, and then we try
- 23:26and find out, okay, who would be It's an interesting process, who
- 23:30would be a good presenter for this act and if they're deceased, who could
- 23:34we get to perform? And we have some really interesting ideas and options that
- 23:42we've reached out to people. And I don't even want to say it,
- 23:45because you know, you go for the big fish. Usually it doesn't happen,
- 23:49but every once in a while it does. You never know. Yeah,
- 23:52exactly approximately how many people are in the Westerrgin Music Hall of Fame now?
- 23:57Sixty two? I think, I think I'm not sure if that includes
- 24:02the twenty twenty three class, so it might be sixty six. And I
- 24:06think it's I think sometimes and this is just and we can play amateur sociologists
- 24:11here. You want to how in West Virginia we don't give ourselves enough credit
- 24:14for anything or our own worst entity. But I don't think sometimes people realize,
- 24:18Michael, how much we have contributed. We talked about the John Ellison
- 24:22story and that's just one how much we have contributed as a state to the
- 24:26entertainment, but not just music, but other other fields as well. Yeah.
- 24:29No, And that's one of our main missions really is to let people
- 24:34know because you know, hey, it's no secret West Virginia gets behind eight
- 24:41ball with in the pr department. Nationally, we you know, we get
- 24:47hit on pretty good. And I think it's really important for kids and for
- 24:52adults too to have state pride and you know, hey, it's only music,
- 24:57but there's some really wonderful music and important musicians that have really had an
- 25:03impact not just in the state, but in the country, in the world.
- 25:07And now with the advent, you know, the last twenty years,
- 25:08with the Internet being what it is, and people can go look. I
- 25:11mean as a music geek, when I was a kid, I had to
- 25:14really go try to find music, you know, using my parents' record collection
- 25:18or my grandparents were big into everything from big band to bluegrass. But now
- 25:23it's just it's right It's on your phone, you know, it's right there,
- 25:26on your computer, your tablet or whatever it is the kids use,
- 25:30it's right there. So they've got an opportunity to learn more about this music
- 25:33a lot more than what people of our age did. Yeah, right,
- 25:37And it's in their laps. Yeah, but there's a lot of things in
- 25:41their laps, so we have to kind of steer them to do the good
- 25:45things. And that's one of the things too. I like about the music
- 25:48Hall of Fame is is that there's such a wide range of people that have
- 25:52contributed to this wonderful music in West Virginia. I mean everything, as we
- 25:56said, gospel to punk to bluegrass, I mean, it's all, it's
- 26:00all represented there. Yeah. Well, that was one of the things when
- 26:03I started this thing. I wanted to make sure it was kind of comprehensive
- 26:07and not just a country music Hall of Fame, because you know, when
- 26:12people think of West Virginia music, they think of country and gospel and traditional
- 26:17and bluegrass, which is great, and we have a lot of that,
- 26:19but there's a lot of other things, you know, just like every other
- 26:25state. But we get kind of pigeonholed more than some And you know,
- 26:32in twenty twenty three, we inducted two of the co founders of Parliament Funkadelic
- 26:37who are from West Virginia, which was when I found that out, it
- 26:40was like, wow, wow's is that possible? That's what you're thinking of
- 26:42yourself? I mean those kind and if you're familiar with there, I will
- 26:45just say this, there would be almost no hip hop music if it were
- 26:49not for a Parliament Funkadelic. I mean, because that's in the early days,
- 26:55ninety percent of the music that was sampled came from those right really well
- 27:00next to James Brown, Yes, sample, yeah, funkayt Yeah, you're
- 27:04right. So everything's happening on Sunday over at to Capital Market. Where can
- 27:08people get tickets? Let's see? Or will they be available at the door.
- 27:15They'll be available at the door, and there is a u ur l
- 27:18to get that, but I'm trying to figure out how to get there.
- 27:21Well, I tell you I have on posted on my social media. I've
- 27:25got the poster that's kind of what I did for the preview the show today.
- 27:27So what's on there? So hopefully it's on there. If not,
- 27:30it's not hard to find simple Google such you'll be able to find it.
- 27:33And tickets are seventy five dollars and that does include your food and your first
- 27:37drink, right correct, Yeah, and it's tax deductible. Yeah. Well,
- 27:41you know, every little in that bracket, the little vantage helps.
- 27:45And the weather is actually going to be really really good and we need that
- 27:51here in the Canall Valley. After the last couple of weeks, the weather
- 27:53is going to be a picture perfect spring almost early summer day. They tell
- 27:56us on Sundays, so it'd be a great day for you to come over

- 28:03hope to see all there, and you know, we're looking forward to announcing
- 28:08these folks too, and yeah, that's that's always a big part of it
- 28:11as well. Class twenty twenty five of the Western g Music Hall of Fame

- 31:40Texas Dave. None of the morning shows got uploaded yesterday. Did the podcast
- 31:44gnome affect that no WI. Yeah, I'm give a little inside baseball information
- 31:48here, all right. And I think I have mentioned this on the show
- 31:51a couple of times. We are undergoing a major renovation project here and I
- 31:53walk in there, I never know what I'm going to walk into when the
- 31:56walk into the studio. Chris Lawrence of courses in here and Kerry before me
- 32:00and I walk in, there's a there's a random ladder over in the corner,
- 32:05and there there is tape on the floor. And I thought sure that
- 32:09Ryan had killed someone again because there was tape on the floor over here.
- 32:14I wasn't like in the form of a body, So I don't I don't
- 32:15know a bottom. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you know,
- 32:19we've been doing a lot of upgrades and so on and so forth.
- 32:22But I do understand. I talked to Ryan during the break that yesterday shows
- 32:25have now been uploaded. There was sort of an issue yesterday, but I
- 32:29think that has been taken care of, So thank you so much for checking
- 32:31it out. And that's a good a good place for me to remind you

- 33:21five zero zero eight. We do have Erica Manny from the Red Cross the
- 33:25schedule to join us here in a couple of moments to talk about and then
- 33:29the ironic thing about this was we had Erica schedule to join not only this
- 33:35station, but stations all across the WVRC media family to talk about some of
- 33:40the cleanup efforts from last week storms from the tornadoes. And I was looking
- 33:45at Erica's schedule. I mean, she was on with with with the folks
- 33:50in Beckley and with Martinsburg. I think she's got a spot on Hoppy coming
- 33:52up next hour. She's going to be on with Hotline with Weekly and Coop
- 33:55coming up a little bit later on. But she wanted the opportunity to talk
- 33:59about that, and well, you know what, we may actually talk about
- 34:02some things that happened here last night in the Kanaw Valley. And it was
- 34:07I was, like you, I was. I was at my home in
- 34:08Putnam County. Other than a few of the normal, as they say,
- 34:12low lying areas, we didn't have a lot of new issues in Putnam County,
- 34:15but man, some other areas did. And those you know, iconic
- 34:19pictures that are out there right now from the flooding, especially the one the
- 34:22one that I think it took everybody's attention because I saw it shared like ten
- 34:27thousand times, and that was on the Interstate on Greenbrier Streets with that water
- 34:32just cascading off of the mountains. There just unbelievable, unbelievable pictures. And
- 34:39we do have stories posted about it all wv Metro News dot com at wchsnetwork
- 34:45dot com. Let me see here, Texas says this is a reference to
- 34:52the mayor's comments. I bet it's been long night's considering what's happening with Ty
- 34:55Hunt, not to mention the third party employees who were paid for working through
- 35:00under and sixty five days a year, says Texter. It's ever back on
- 35:02when you're willing to address the tough issues, you're throwing softballs to everyone.
- 35:07Well, I mean, considering that people's lives were in danger last night.
- 35:09If you thought I was going to ask the mayor about the situation with Ty
- 35:13kunt or about Kent Carper within any of his other issues, well you've probably
- 35:16got another thing coming, because there's a time and place and that ain't In
- 35:21last Tuesday, our area was ravaged by storms and tornadoes. The exact numbers
- 35:25change as more research has done. We saw more severe weather here yesterday,
- 35:30as I said, more flooding than what we had with the tornadoes. Cleanups
- 35:36continue around the sate of West Virginia from last week storm and the WVRC media
- 35:40family, of course, doing our part to help Erica Manning's from the Red
- 35:43Cross that she joins US now Erica. Good morning, welcome to the show.
- 35:45Good morning, thanks for having me. The Red Cross team has certainly
- 35:50been in full swing over the last couple of weeks, and with what you've
- 35:55mentioned with the storms, tornadoes, flooding, and additionally, you know,
- 36:01the every day response to home fires that we're doing, it has been NonStop
- 36:07for sure. Yeah, exactly. So what exactly is your ask right now
- 36:12for our listeners this morning. Well, we are able to be on the
- 36:17scene for immediate emergency response to people who have lost everything because we have generous
- 36:24donors who make that possible. And we are hoping today that we can encourage
- 36:30folks to consider giving a monetary donation to the Red Cross to make sure that
- 36:37we can be there immediately following disasters, just like we have been for these
- 36:43floods, tornadoes as well as fires. And you can do that by going
- 36:49to one eight hundred Red Cross or calling our local office. Either number you
- 36:54use will get you to our local office, and you can go to Red
- 36:59Cross dot org, put in your zip code and see how you can help,
- 37:04whether that is through a monetary donation, becoming a volunteer or even signing
- 37:08up to give blood. And that's an important thing because you know, automatically,
- 37:13when you talk about I guess the Red Cross. So for that matter,
- 37:15any other charitable type emergency situation, people automatically think, well, it's
- 37:20it's about money. And yes, money is a very important part of it.
- 37:22But there are ways that you can help out these organizations Erica that have
- 37:25nothing to do with money. As you said, giving blood, you know,
- 37:29giving your time, these things are just as important. We like to
- 37:32say that at the Red Cross there is truly something for everyone. So you
- 37:37know, if you have the time to volunteer, that is the key reason
- 37:42that we are able to be out there, in addition to the monetary donations
- 37:46that our donors make. And again, if you are just looking at how
- 37:51can I get involved, going to Redcross dot org and putting in your zip
- 37:55code can show you all the ways that you can get involved with the Red
- 38:00Cross and help our community. Right here, and let's talk about what we
- 38:04saw last week around the mountain state. You know, there's always and I'm
- 38:07from southern West Virginia where the mountains are a lot more plentiful than what they
- 38:10are around these parts here in Charleston. I hear a lot from people say,
- 38:13well, the tornadoes, you know, they won't come here. Well,
- 38:15I think we prove that wrong last week. And not to play meteorologists
- 38:20or anything like that, but I think that what we've proven here is that
- 38:23these type of disasters Erica can happen anywhere. They surely do. And you
- 38:30know, the National Weather Service even called what happened here last week historic with
- 38:35the number of tornadoes. We keep adding to it, We keep adding to
- 38:37it as more research is done, we sure do. And you know,
- 38:42as as our teams have been out, we have seen an amazing amount of
- 38:47destruction. Is it is just breathtaking. And when families have events like this
- 38:55happen, you know, they lose everything. We see, we work with
- 39:00families that have had their homes either destroyed or majorly damaged such that they cannot
- 39:07stay in their homes. They have to find another place to turn. And
- 39:10when that happens in you know large you know, uh geographies like this,
- 39:16we find ourselves having to, you know, go out to the many geographies,
- 39:22do damage assessment and meet with those families, provide them financial assistance,
- 39:27give them individualized caseworks so you know, some families lost prescriptions, right,
- 39:34they need those to immediately, you know, take care of their health.
- 39:38They may have lost medical durable goods. You know, we've we've had clients
- 39:45just this past week that said, we're staying with friends, you know,
- 39:50but because you know, you've given us this money, we can now make
- 39:54sure that we're able to contribute to to feed our family because our friends can't
- 40:01afford to feed our family too. So you know, they told us part
- 40:06of that money is going to make sure that they can have groceries, you
- 40:08know. So you know, this is that immediate emergency assistance that we're providing,
- 40:14and it goes such a long way because they've lost everything food, clothes,
- 40:19shoes, you know, they're like I mentioned, their prescriptions and just
- 40:23so much more. And with all of that, our caseworkers help not only
- 40:29with financial assistance from the Red Cross, but we make sure we find the
- 40:32you know, the opportunities for additional assistance in their area. All right,
- 40:38Erica, I know you've got a busy day. As I said, you've
- 40:40been on with all of our station's day. I think Somersville, Beckley,
- 40:45Martinsburg, Morgantown, Clarksburg. You're on with Hoppy next hour. You're on
- 40:47with Weekly and Coop this afternoon. I'm so sorry you had to deal with
- 40:51that many radio people in one day. There's probably there's probably a special place
- 40:54in heaven for you, you know that, right. You all have been
- 40:58so kind to let us put this out there. Thank you so much.
- 41:00All right, eric A Maddi from the Red Cross, give us theecond,
- 41:02give us the information again. How people can can help out absolutely, call
- 41:07us at our local office or one eight hundred Red Cross which is easier to
- 41:12remember, or go to Redcross dot org put in your zip code and see
- 41:15how you can get involved. All right, Eric, I appreciate it.

- 41:42had this conversation with somebody yesterday. You can believe what you want to about
- 41:47climate change. I for one, believe it's one hundred percent a real thing.
- 41:55We are seeing people that have never experienced tornado before experienced tornadoes. We
- 42:01are seeing snow in areas we have never seen snow. We are not seeing
- 42:07snow in other areas where we used to see snow. We're seeing hurricanes strike
- 42:09places that have never done before, not only here in the US, but
- 42:13in other places. We'll talk about extreme weather events now, not just hurricanes.
- 42:16You can argue all day as to how much of how much of this
- 42:22is man made and how much of it's not, but extreme weather and climate
- 42:29change is one hundred percent of real thing. Now, where it gets hippy
- 42:32is when it becomes politicized. And I'm not going to get in that argument.

- 45:49sample throughout all of history is the height of narcissism. Climate activists are arrogant
- 45:52narcissists that think very highly of themselves in their opinion, most of them.
- 45:57I don't disagree with the texture on that life statement at all. Big event
- 46:00habiting tomorrow late afternoon to nightro They're calling it Samuel Strong and it's a fundraiser
- 46:06for a gentleman named Will. Samuel. Nicki Gordon is vice principal at Nitra
- 46:09High School and she joins us now to talk about HIMSS Gordon, good morning,
- 46:13Welcome to the show. Good morning, Dave. How are you today?
- 46:15I'm doing fine. First of all, who is the Samuel that we
- 46:17speak of here? So Will Samuel. He was a teacher at Niger High
- 46:22School. He was our pe teacher for several years, but he is currently
- 46:25a PE teacher now at cross Lands Almentry. But he's a huge part of
- 46:29our community, involved in youth sports, coaching, basketball, baseball, involved
- 46:36in everything. He's just a huge part of our community and we're here to
- 46:39rally around him during his time battling cancer and want to make sure what we
- 46:45can do our part to help his family during this terrible time. And understand
- 46:50you're going to be doing an alumni basketball game tomorrow at the high school to
- 46:52raise fun. Starts at five and actually two games, is that right,
- 46:55Yes, that is right. We are going to open the doors at five.
- 47:00Games will kick off at five thirty. We have alumni girls playing at
- 47:04five thirty. We have about thirty five alumnis that are going to be playing
- 47:09in that game, big names, Meg Withrow, Billy Goins, lots of
- 47:15key players that were here at Nitros several years ago back to rally around and
- 47:20support our community. And then immediately following at six point thirty seven o'clock,
- 47:24we will have our boys playing and have a great time with that as well.
- 47:30And you've got other activities going on in addition to the basketball, right,
- 47:34yeah, we are going to have of course concessions stand we know keep
- 47:37people love food, lots of everything donated to us so all proceeds can go
- 47:42to Will and his family. We want to thank our other clubs and groups
- 47:46for providing that food and drinks so we didn't have to purchase anything. And
- 47:51funds can go directly back to them. We will have a fifty to fifty
- 47:54drawing that the cheerleaders will work on. We'll also have alumni cheerleaders at both
- 47:58games. They've been in the gym this week, dustin off their palms,
- 48:01getting ready for the big game. And then we'll have a half court shootout
- 48:07between the games. There will be some prizes for the kids adults as well.
- 48:12We just want to make it fun for everybody. And then Boss Babe
- 48:15Events is bringing her photo booth and photo backdrop of a basketball and it's going
- 48:21to be called Pennies for Poses and just throws some change in there and have
- 48:25a fun night with some photos and stuff to memorize. Uh. To memorials
- 48:31this game and keep it going. And we hope that you know, this
- 48:35is going to be an annual thing. We're going to call it the Helping
- 48:37Hands Tournament every year. Okay. We want to, you know, give
- 48:43back to our communities because they do so much for our kids and our students.
- 48:46All right, I've got information posted about it on my social media pages.
- 48:50It's just someplace online other than just on my pages where people can learn
- 48:53more. And our tickets will tickets be available at the door. Yeah,
- 48:57all tickets throughout the door. Everything is going to be cash. It's all
- 49:00cash event, so we can give one hundred percent of the proceeds right back
- 49:02to the family. We're going to charge five dollars adults, two dollars per
- 49:07students, and if you know they're unable to pay, just come and have
- 49:10fun. We'll talk to you. We'll just make something work. Just give
- 49:14some money to Will and his family. We just want to have a great
- 49:16time tomorrow night and have as many people as involved as possible. And you
- 49:21can always check it out on night. Your high school's Facebook page. I've
- 49:24shared it. I've created an event. It's all over Facebook night Nicki Gordon
- 49:30on Facebook. All right, miss Gordon, I appreciate you being here.
- 49:34Best of luck with everything tomorrow. So it's like a very very worthwhile cause
- 49:37for a wonderful human being. I don't know him personally, but based on
- 49:39what I've heard in talking to different people, seems like a fantastic gentlemen needed
- 49:43some help. I appreciate you joining us this morning. Thanks a lot,
- 49:45Thank you for having me. Have a great night you as well. Night
- 49:47you our high schools. Nicki Gordon. That event again tomorrow should be should

- 50:17Texas, I'm confused. Does politicizing climate change mean actually trying to do
- 50:22something about it rather than to pay it lip service? Well, it is
- 50:27one of the most politicized political things to totally butcher the English language that there
- 50:32is out there is climate change, Texas, Dave. We have lawmakers that
- 50:37brag about our Rainy Day Fund having one billion dollars in it, but can't
- 50:42help people when disasters happen, Like they always say it's taxpayer's money, but
- 50:45you can't have it, as was reported yesterday, And I'll go back to
- 50:50a text from an earlier Texter. Former police chef Tai Hunt in Charleston suspended
- 50:55and has been demoted from the Charleston Police Department. According to reports, he
- 50:59is now a corpril, which is two ranks down from being a lieutenant.
- 51:02A statement on the entire incident issued by Chief Dempsey earlier this week, Tony
- 51:07Haslt also with the department, spoke with the exact mail and would not comment
- 51:12as to when Ty Hunt would return. Now in a statement from Chief Dempsey,
- 51:15and we talked to him, we meaning the news department, Chief Dempsey,
- 51:20and you can read the story by the way wv Metronews dot com.
- 51:22Chief Dempsey said the investigation concluded on April second, and that they could not
- 51:27release specifics. Now. I will tell you that I talked with officials from
- 51:30the city last night prior to prior to the flooding and everything that we saw
- 51:37in and around the Charleston Aary. This was actually the late afternoon and be
- 51:38a better way to describe it. And the comment from them, because I
- 51:42did invite them on the show to talk about that specifically, the comment from
- 51:45them was pretty much no comment, and as Chief Dempsey said, It is
- 51:52a personnel matter, and that's all that we have to go on at this
- 51:54time. I will close with this. Results were announced yesterday on Hoppy.
- 52:00As far as the West Virginia poll goes, it says more Capitol and Patrick
- 52:02Morrissey are now running neck and neck in the race for the Republican nomination for
- 52:07governor. Morrissey thirty one percent of the vote. Capital at twenty nine percent,
- 52:10Chris Miller is at sixteen percent, and Secretary of State Mac Warner at
- 52:14twelve percent. One thing that has changed so we get closer than May primary
- 52:17is the undecided. Undecided numbers are going way down. They were about thirty
- 52:21percent now only down to about ten percent. That poll done by Research America
- 52:24and Rix Repass and Metro News, sponsored by the Health Plan. Details available
