- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me on the line right now is a gentleman
- 0:03Speaker 1: who actually got hit by lightning two fridays ago, as
- 0:07Speaker 1: I understand it, at Gateway shopping Center. Lez Helstone joins
- 0:11Speaker 1: me on the line. Get a lez hey, hey, you
- 0:14Speaker 1: go not bad mate.
- 0:15Speaker 2: What happened three point thirty two fridays ago in the
- 0:23Speaker 2: car park? Got hit by lightning? Are by lightning through
- 0:27Speaker 2: my car? Oh my goodness, unbelievable.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Let's talk us through what happened. You were sitting in
- 0:35Speaker 1: your car and what there was a storm around? Was it?
- 0:39Speaker 2: Yeah, there was a storm and everything and a lot
- 0:41Speaker 2: of lightning. So I got out of my car and
- 0:43Speaker 2: I went around the back of it and I opened
- 0:46Speaker 2: the back, got an umbrella out. Well, no shuttered, the
- 0:50Speaker 2: key was in the in the key hole still. Yeah,
- 0:53Speaker 2: And when I and then it sort of struck then
- 0:56Speaker 2: and then sort of when a struggle went back and
- 0:58Speaker 2: it disconnected me from the from the strike. Here, doctor said,
- 1:02Speaker 2: I was really lucky.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Oh my goodness, Lise, I've never spoken to somebody who's
- 1:07Speaker 1: been struck by lightning before. Are you okay?
- 1:12Speaker 2: First day, I really saw a third day a little
- 1:17Speaker 2: bit delusional. Then Monday and that just sort of started
- 1:22Speaker 2: getting better. I was really tired on one side, on
- 1:24Speaker 2: the right hand side, right up right up to the
- 1:27Speaker 2: top of me, the bottom of my head, past my
- 1:30Speaker 2: ear stretched out, you know, weirdest feeling.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Now, I understand that you've just seen the CCTV footageat
- 1:39Speaker 1: of it.
- 1:41Speaker 2: I've seen it yesterday.
- 1:44Speaker 1: What was that like to say?
- 1:45Speaker 2: That's why I'm telling Peter, They like, you can't get
- 1:48Speaker 2: any you know, letter. I wasn't allowed to take it
- 1:51Speaker 2: or get a film or ending like that, or get
- 1:54Speaker 2: a copy of it because of legal reasons and all
- 1:57Speaker 2: this kind of stuff. But they wrote me a letter
- 2:01Speaker 2: and stated that I actually got hit, because anybody can
- 2:05Speaker 2: tell you they got hit. Yeah, but you know, and
- 2:08Speaker 2: they said that they first of all, we couldn't see
- 2:11Speaker 2: a little I couldn't see a little lightning, yep. And
- 2:14Speaker 2: then when we then looked over and over again and
- 2:17Speaker 2: you can see you at the same time a white
- 2:19Speaker 2: light come up at the bottom and at the exact
- 2:21Speaker 2: same time I sort of jolped and got stepped back
- 2:25Speaker 2: a couple of steps.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Wow, Liz, what was it like for you then sort
- 2:30Speaker 1: of watching that vision and you know, having it confirmed
- 2:34Speaker 1: exactly what had gone.
- 2:35Speaker 2: On, Ah, that's unbelievable. Like, I can't. I can't believe it.
- 2:41Speaker 2: The doctors they told me, they said, you need You're
- 2:45Speaker 2: so lucky that you had thongs on because it pretty
- 2:47Speaker 2: much saved your life.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I was going to ask you that exactly that how
- 2:54Speaker 1: you alive to tell this tale.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Because of them bongs and probably because of the fact
- 3:03Speaker 2: that I had an umbrella in the left hand and
- 3:06Speaker 2: I didn't have two hands on the back of the car. Yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 2: because if I would have had two hands on the car,
- 3:12Speaker 2: I would have got sort of sort of held there.
- 3:15Speaker 2: But I had one hand and when it when it,
- 3:17Speaker 2: when it did strike, sort of pushed me back, got
- 3:21Speaker 2: a hell of a shock, But I didn't get like.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I don't think I would have got the full full
- 3:28Speaker 2: blunder it. If I would have, I wouldn't be talking
- 3:30Speaker 2: to you in our suppose do you remember me, I'd
- 3:33Speaker 2: done the T shirts, I've done the night four shirts
- 3:35Speaker 2: and less. Yes there, Oh mate.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I can't believe that you got bloody hit by lightning.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I can't believe it either.
- 3:52Speaker 1: And you're alive to tell the tale. Did you go
- 3:54Speaker 1: buy a lot of ticket? Yeah?
- 3:57Speaker 2: I won seven bucks, got a gun by a lot
- 4:03Speaker 2: of tickets because you know you're you're lucky. And I said, okay,
- 4:06Speaker 2: I went and bought it.
- 4:09Speaker 1: Oh mate, well I'm going to give you a territory
- 4:11Speaker 1: and of the week. I reckon that's a better price.
- 4:14Speaker 1: That is a beautiful hamper, which is which is it's
- 4:19Speaker 1: a beautiful care package supplied by Nevil at Parrap fine
- 4:22Speaker 1: foods with gourmet goodness for your goodness. And I tell
- 4:26Speaker 1: you what, I think that's much better going than your
- 4:28Speaker 1: seven bucks on your lotto tickets.
- 4:32Speaker 2: My life, my life, Liz, I just.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Can't believe it. Like you know, you sort of here,
- 4:38Speaker 1: like I think you hear a lot or you're sort
- 4:41Speaker 1: of hearing the news at different times that that somebody
- 4:44Speaker 1: has been struck by lightning. But then to actually speak
- 4:46Speaker 1: to someone who's been struck by lightning right here in
- 4:49Speaker 1: Darwin or in Palmerstan and and that you've survived to
- 4:53Speaker 1: tell the tale, it's it's just astonishing.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Well with all the lightning around, you know, it's one
- 5:00Speaker 2: that doesn't have more often. I can you know they're
- 5:03Speaker 2: walking in everywhere. I'm a bit suss now. I don't
- 5:07Speaker 2: really want to get on a plane no more, just
- 5:10Speaker 2: in case it gets suit by lightning. Well, you know,
- 5:14Speaker 2: I go out cutting ditches and all that kind of stuff,
- 5:17Speaker 2: and you wouldn't. Yeah, loads of lightning. I never had
- 5:19Speaker 2: no worries. I don't think it'll be doing it no more?
- 5:22Speaker 1: No les myke, what kind of of rubber songs have
- 5:27Speaker 1: you got? I think is what everybody is wondering and
- 5:30Speaker 1: wondering if they need to go get themselves a pair.
- 5:33Speaker 2: I think that they cost two dollars. You know what
- 5:37Speaker 2: I'm going to do with him? I'm going to put
- 5:40Speaker 2: them in a put them in a put them in
- 5:42Speaker 2: a frame, an just keep them forever.
- 5:44Speaker 1: I freaking I would.
- 5:47Speaker 2: I said that to my family.
- 5:50Speaker 1: Yeah, what was their reaction and what's their reaction being?
- 5:53Speaker 1: Then after seeing the CCTV or I don't know whether
- 5:56Speaker 1: they've seen it, but you know what's their reaction been?
- 5:59Speaker 1: You know, over this whole thing, I'll.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Get all the relations and cousins ringing up, joking about it,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and all this kind of stuff telling me how to
- 6:08Speaker 2: have I asking me if I got super powers and
- 6:10Speaker 2: all this kind of stuff. Now, but then right down
- 6:14Speaker 2: to earth, my like, this is a story on the
- 6:17Speaker 2: on the on the Sunday, I was driving the car
- 6:19Speaker 2: around and because I had to drive the car from
- 6:23Speaker 2: after I got shot over to Danila Dilba because I
- 6:27Speaker 2: went into I went into the gateway and they were
- 6:30Speaker 2: sort of just like really too busy, and I was
- 6:32Speaker 2: sort of standing up there looking like a whatever, and
- 6:36Speaker 2: I said, I said, oh, buet this. I just jumped
- 6:38Speaker 2: in my can't driver to Danilla Dilba and got done
- 6:41Speaker 2: over there. And my wife said to me, because we
- 6:44Speaker 2: went for a drive on Sunday and she said where
- 6:47Speaker 2: are you going? And I said, I'm going to I'm
- 6:50Speaker 2: down the halls and she said, well, you're going the
- 6:52Speaker 2: wrong way. Can you get out and let me drive? Please?
- 6:55Speaker 2: So that kind of thing happens too, so and then
- 6:59Speaker 2: mother all sort of you know, ringing up or feel
- 7:03Speaker 2: what happened? You sure, yeah, sure, well I tell you
- 7:08Speaker 2: when I've seen it. Now that I've seen that, I'm
- 7:10Speaker 2: going to talk about it, because you know what people
- 7:13Speaker 2: are like, you can you can you can say something
- 7:16Speaker 2: and I go yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, whatever.
- 7:20Speaker 1: But you're saying it well, as you've said, it really
- 7:23Speaker 1: did happen. And you've obviously been to see the doctor.
- 7:25Speaker 1: You've seen that CC TV as well. It sounds like
- 7:28Speaker 1: it was bloody frightening, Les, and a bit of a
- 7:30Speaker 1: warning I think for all of us that you do
- 7:32Speaker 1: need to be, you know, a bit bit careful when
- 7:34Speaker 1: there is that lightning about.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Sure do, yeah, will be from there on. And I
- 7:41Speaker 2: bet I can sit in the room now, in the house, now,
- 7:44Speaker 2: in the well outside in the light and come on
- 7:47Speaker 2: just go inside.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah I would do, mate, Les, we are going to
- 7:53Speaker 1: have to leave it there. Thanks so much for giving
- 7:55Speaker 1: us a call and making us aware of what had
- 7:57Speaker 1: gone on. And yet a bit of a warning for everybody,
- 7:59Speaker 1: I reckon.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yeah. So yeah, so what does it mean when you
- 8:05Speaker 2: like what did you say about territory?
- 8:09Speaker 1: Oh you're well, you're our territory and of the week.
- 8:12Speaker 1: So if you stay on hold, I'll get Daniel to
- 8:16Speaker 1: get all your details and you'll be able to pick
- 8:18Speaker 1: up a beautiful hamper from perap Fine Foods. Big thanks
- 8:21Speaker 1: to Neville from perap Fine Foods.
- 8:23Speaker 2: When I go there, i'll produce my my letter.
- 8:29Speaker 1: Well, good on you. Thank you so much, Les for
- 8:32Speaker 1: having a chat with us this morning. I really appreciate it.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Yeah, thank you very much.
