- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wire to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan, and this is episode number three
- 0:19Speaker 1: eight one, and today we're back for another one of
- 0:22Speaker 1: our Fresh Radio episodes in which we are hearing from
- 0:25Speaker 1: hunters all across the country about the latest deer activity, behavior,
- 0:29Speaker 1: current conditions, and the tactics that are working right now.
- 0:37Speaker 1: All right, welcome to the Wired Hunt Podcast, brought to
- 0:41Speaker 1: you by on X. We are back with I think
- 0:45Speaker 1: this is our Is this our last rout fresh Radio
- 0:49Speaker 1: for October? Next episode will be October UM and that
- 0:54Speaker 1: will be the last episode of October. All right, Well,
- 0:56Speaker 1: I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm wishing away October all
- 1:00Speaker 1: the way to November. But I shouldn't do that because
- 1:01Speaker 1: good things are still to come in in October. Uh.
- 1:07Speaker 1: For those that haven't heard these episodes, we are basically
- 1:10Speaker 1: going to hear from a series of deer hunters here
- 1:13Speaker 1: in a minute. They're gonna tell us all about what
- 1:15Speaker 1: kind of deer activity they've been seeing, what kind of
- 1:17Speaker 1: dear activity they are predicting, and all of the conditions
- 1:22Speaker 1: and behavior and changing. I don't know, moon, weather, temperature,
- 1:29Speaker 1: anything that might influence deer movement. That's the kind of
- 1:31Speaker 1: stuff that we're in hearing from from these in the
- 1:33Speaker 1: field reporters. Spencer, of course you know this. I know this, Um,
- 1:38Speaker 1: But that's the game plan. And it is almost the
- 1:41Speaker 1: end of October. It's Uh, it's getting to be a
- 1:44Speaker 1: particularly exciting time of year because we're we're basically in
- 1:47Speaker 1: the doorstep of the pre rut and the super Bowl
- 1:51Speaker 1: is is going to break open any day now. Yeah,
- 1:55Speaker 1: These last ten days of October, which when this episode drops,
- 1:59Speaker 1: there would be ten days of the month left, um,
- 2:02Speaker 1: are really exciting because sign is going to peek here
- 2:05Speaker 1: pretty soon. We're gonna start seeing some of that pre
- 2:07Speaker 1: road stuff like seeking and chasing, like you said, Um.
- 2:11Speaker 1: And for a lot of serious white tailors, this is
- 2:14Speaker 1: like their favorite time of year to kill a homebody
- 2:18Speaker 1: buck that they're familiar with, and it's something that a
- 2:22Speaker 1: lot of haunters look forward to each year, even more
- 2:24Speaker 1: so than the rut, because with the rut comes this chaos,
- 2:28Speaker 1: it comes the loss of deer, it comes with gaining deer,
- 2:31Speaker 1: and it's like sort of hard to plan for. But
- 2:35Speaker 1: for folks UM that like data and like scouting and
- 2:38Speaker 1: like trail camera images and are really familiar with an
- 2:41Speaker 1: area and no historical patterns, this last ten days of
- 2:44Speaker 1: October are really important. Thinking back to the biggest buck
- 2:48Speaker 1: that I ever hunted in twenty I think it was seen.
- 2:52Speaker 1: It was probably a one class deyear um. I I
- 2:56Speaker 1: had kind of you know, been getting pictures of him
- 2:58Speaker 1: since July UM, and the two opportunities that I had
- 3:03Speaker 1: at him seeing him in daylight did not come like
- 3:06Speaker 1: during the peak of the rut. They were like October.
- 3:09Speaker 1: In October, I believe. And so these next seven days
- 3:14Speaker 1: are super important for white tailors that have some nocturnal
- 3:18Speaker 1: buck um that they might finally get a chance at. Yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 1: that's that is the truth. I feel a dent the
- 3:26Speaker 1: same way. I've been looking at this week on the
- 3:29Speaker 1: calendar as as one of my very best chances um.
- 3:32Speaker 1: For example, for my target buck, my number one target
- 3:35Speaker 1: buck tran of course that big eight partner in Michigan. Um,
- 3:39Speaker 1: this was the week I circled is probably when I
- 3:42Speaker 1: could really get it done because just like you mentioned,
- 3:45Speaker 1: he's not going to be roaming all over the place yet,
- 3:48Speaker 1: but hopefully he's getting spicy enough that he'll be moving
- 3:51Speaker 1: a little bit in daylight and I can get a
- 3:53Speaker 1: crack um. So yeah, it's it's a time that especially
- 3:58Speaker 1: if you get that very nicely time to cold front,
- 4:01Speaker 1: it can set things off to you can get that
- 4:04Speaker 1: rut at least a flash of the rut a little
- 4:07Speaker 1: bit earlier than you might otherwise if you happen to
- 4:10Speaker 1: get that weather too, and at least in my neck
- 4:13Speaker 1: of the woods, we do have that weather hitting over
- 4:17Speaker 1: the coming weekend. We're gonna get a twenty degree temperature
- 4:20Speaker 1: drop that lines up with that last week of October
- 4:24Speaker 1: and those late October cold fronts hitting it already a
- 4:28Speaker 1: very good time. Seemed to be like a firecracker thrown
- 4:32Speaker 1: into a gunpowder shed. It just it bodes very well.
- 4:36Speaker 1: So I'm excited. Um. I'm actually out in Ohio hunting
- 4:41Speaker 1: some public land right now, but I've made sure to
- 4:44Speaker 1: plan on making it back to Michigan in time for
- 4:48Speaker 1: this cold front that's hitting around time period, because I
- 4:53Speaker 1: want to take advantage of this last week of October
- 4:55Speaker 1: magic with that cold front all hitting at the same time.
- 4:59Speaker 1: So um um, I'm certainly hoping it turns out the
- 5:02Speaker 1: way we're hyping it up because I'm counting on it. Yeah,
- 5:05Speaker 1: and sort of like the textbook example is if ten
- 5:09Speaker 1: days ago you had a buck showing up in the
- 5:11Speaker 1: middle of the night at like one am, um, then
- 5:15Speaker 1: maybe right now he's showing up like an hour after daylight,
- 5:18Speaker 1: and then ten days from now, you know, maybe it's
- 5:20Speaker 1: at last thirty minutes of shooting light right at sunset um.
- 5:23Speaker 1: But then you get the ten days beyond that, and
- 5:26Speaker 1: you might not ever see that buck again because he
- 5:28Speaker 1: wanders off somewhere during the rut um. So for those
- 5:32Speaker 1: hunters that you don't have some buck that they're really
- 5:34Speaker 1: easier or in on, this is probably gonna be your chance,
- 5:37Speaker 1: you know, now through October thirty one or so um
- 5:41Speaker 1: to sort of put that dada together and kill him
- 5:43Speaker 1: on some fresh sign or some some field edge that
- 5:46Speaker 1: he slowly is showing up closer and closer to daylight in. Yeah,
- 5:51Speaker 1: you know, It's it's funny. We've had a lot of
- 5:54Speaker 1: these cold fronts that have lined up with weekends and
- 5:59Speaker 1: lining We've had almost had one hitting every week or
- 6:02Speaker 1: every other week, and so I found us saying now
- 6:05Speaker 1: is the time to swing for the fences. Often almost
- 6:08Speaker 1: every episode I've done these, But we had one that
- 6:11Speaker 1: was leading into the beginning of October, and we're saying, man,
- 6:15Speaker 1: if it's the beginning of your season and we have
- 6:17Speaker 1: this cold front, it could be really special swinging for
- 6:19Speaker 1: the fences maybe. And then we had like a mid
- 6:22Speaker 1: October cold front that hit recently, and we were saying, man,
- 6:26Speaker 1: with this front hit and this could be a chance
- 6:28Speaker 1: to push in there and get after something. Um. Each
- 6:31Speaker 1: one of those I would say is we're excited about
- 6:35Speaker 1: cold fronts, right, We're always talking about those are going
- 6:37Speaker 1: to give you a little bit better chance. Um. But
- 6:39Speaker 1: that opening day cold front, you know, I look at
- 6:41Speaker 1: that as like a like a seven out of ten
- 6:46Speaker 1: kind of excitement level. And then when you get that
- 6:48Speaker 1: mid October cold front, maybe on like a six point
- 6:51Speaker 1: five out ten kind of excitement level. But when you
- 6:54Speaker 1: get the late October cold front, the hits if it
- 6:56Speaker 1: hits at the right time and you get this big temperatureure,
- 7:00Speaker 1: that gets me to like the eight and a half
- 7:01Speaker 1: or nine out of ten excitement level. Because you have
- 7:05Speaker 1: these two very powerful drivers converging. You've got the the
- 7:10Speaker 1: ven diagram of pre rut craziness happening when those two
- 7:15Speaker 1: things intersect in the last few days of the month.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Um So, even though we told you to swing for
- 7:21Speaker 1: the fences the fences several times leading up to this,
- 7:24Speaker 1: now I really want you to do it because, as
- 7:27Speaker 1: you just said, Spencer, Um, you know, the deer you
- 7:30Speaker 1: want to kill might not be around on November four
- 7:33Speaker 1: or something, but there's a damn good chance he still
- 7:35Speaker 1: is right now. Um So, so at least keep that
- 7:39Speaker 1: in mind when you're weighing your risks and rewards and
- 7:42Speaker 1: when you want to go in there. Um, this is
- 7:44Speaker 1: something to think about. Agree with you there? Um, The
- 7:47Speaker 1: hunters we talked to you this week, we have Dan
- 7:49Speaker 1: Moultrie from Moultrie in Georgia, Scott Spitzley in Michigan from
- 7:53Speaker 1: six Packs and Max Podcast, Taylor Chamberlain in Virginia, the
- 7:58Speaker 1: Urban Bowman, and then Get Hikes from Chasing the Dream
- 8:01Speaker 1: TV in Nebraska. And we had two of our haunters
- 8:04Speaker 1: we talked to you this week that just killed deer yesterday.
- 8:08Speaker 1: So I think you're gonna find their reports, um extra
- 8:11Speaker 1: helpful on this episode. Any other than what we just said,
- 8:15Speaker 1: is there anything we should be thinking about is there
- 8:17Speaker 1: any particular um I don't know common theme or or
- 8:24Speaker 1: should we just let these folks speak for themselves? And
- 8:26Speaker 1: then we get to the episode of These interviews are exciting,
- 8:29Speaker 1: It's the exciting time of year, and I'm gonna let
- 8:32Speaker 1: you get back to hunting. Mark all right, it works
- 8:35Speaker 1: for Ray Spencer. All interviews this week are presented by
- 8:39Speaker 1: Trophy Ridge. Make sure to check out their full lineup

- 8:51Speaker 1: own a React Trio Pro site into my favorite site
- 8:54Speaker 1: that I've ever owned. It's perfect for when I'm out

- 8:59Speaker 1: tail coun tree and trying to kill a deer from
- 9:01Speaker 1: a tree stand. Check out their sites and other accessories
- 9:04Speaker 1: at trophy Ridge dot com. Alright and joining us on
- 9:09Speaker 1: the line next is Garrett Hikers from Chasing the Dream
- 9:12Speaker 1: TV in Nebraska. Now Garrett in Nebraska. What would you
- 9:16Speaker 1: say the bucket activity has been lately on a scale
- 9:18Speaker 1: of one to ten um. I think in the past
- 9:20Speaker 1: week m from my hunts have been out quite a bit,
- 9:23Speaker 1: but I'd say it's probably five or six probably closer
- 9:27Speaker 1: to a six m. With the colder whether we've had,
- 9:31Speaker 1: and I've noticed food sources have been pretty important, especially
- 9:35Speaker 1: green food sources like alfalfa and Nebraska plots. The cold
- 9:40Speaker 1: weather has definitely helped in my opinion. UM. Sometimes you
- 9:42Speaker 1: don't see as much buck activity right now, UM fits
- 9:45Speaker 1: warmer UM. A lot of guys talking about the October low.
- 9:49Speaker 1: But from this week, I've seen quite a bit of
- 9:52Speaker 1: activity on scrapes and stuff like that. I've got all
- 9:55Speaker 1: my cameras switched over to them. The last two nights especially,
- 9:58Speaker 1: they've been coming out to super early. We've had cold,
- 10:02Speaker 1: misty weather the last couple of days, and I've been
- 10:05Speaker 1: sitting on food sources and in my main plot where
- 10:08Speaker 1: I actually killed last night. But plenty of plenty of
- 10:11Speaker 1: deer activity in the evenings pretty early. It seems like
- 10:15Speaker 1: they've been bedding up pretty early in the morning. Though.
- 10:19Speaker 1: Tell us about that set up from last night when
- 10:21Speaker 1: you arawed that awesome white tail. Two years ago, we
- 10:24Speaker 1: started pretty good sized food prought about three and a
- 10:27Speaker 1: half acres along a creek line with Betting on the
- 10:30Speaker 1: northwest corner and on the east side and this year
- 10:33Speaker 1: I kind of completely redesigned it to try to help
- 10:36Speaker 1: my chances, um after learning how the deer moved in
- 10:39Speaker 1: there a little better last year, so I put pretty
- 10:43Speaker 1: tall Egyptian wheat strip from the very west end all
- 10:47Speaker 1: the way down the south border to the east end,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and that helped my access in and out, and then
- 10:54Speaker 1: south of me across the lane, uh, there's a big
- 10:58Speaker 1: main field the south alfa, so I've kind of got
- 11:01Speaker 1: the plot set up to be a good transition plot
- 11:04Speaker 1: between betting in the main twood and uh. The last
- 11:09Speaker 1: few weeks, I've been the chase in this book that
- 11:11Speaker 1: I can't see too and he had been coming out
- 11:15Speaker 1: quite a bit in the east side of the plot,
- 11:17Speaker 1: and I have a platform line over there that's set
- 11:19Speaker 1: up for northwest wind, but the wind broke a couple
- 11:23Speaker 1: of the supports in it, so I didn't have that
- 11:25Speaker 1: set up. And I've got a hay Bell blind on
- 11:27Speaker 1: the west end, so I've been sitting that and it
- 11:30Speaker 1: seems like every time I sid that hay Bell blind,
- 11:32Speaker 1: he comes out on the east side by the platform.
- 11:35Speaker 1: So yesterday I went in I ended up finding a
- 11:37Speaker 1: kind of a crappy ground blind in the barn and
- 11:40Speaker 1: I got that popped up on the platform and sat
- 11:43Speaker 1: it last night and I put it on my Instagram story.
- 11:47Speaker 1: Um kind of making a joke. I kind of knew
- 11:49Speaker 1: it was going to happen though, now that I was
- 11:50Speaker 1: in the right blind, he was going to show up
- 11:52Speaker 1: in front of the other one, and probably forty five
- 11:54Speaker 1: minutes before dark, I looked over to my left, which
- 11:57Speaker 1: is over by the bailed blind, and he was standing
- 12:00Speaker 1: broadside at twenty five yards from that one. And it
- 12:03Speaker 1: took him quite a while to get down towards me,
- 12:06Speaker 1: but finally worked his way down at bean row across
- 12:08Speaker 1: the fence at thirty five and then took a couple
- 12:10Speaker 1: of steps quartered away. I don't remember if I ranged
- 12:13Speaker 1: him at thirty seven or thirty nine, but shot him
- 12:16Speaker 1: and last second he ducked and lunched forward pretty hard
- 12:19Speaker 1: and I hit him in front of the back right
- 12:21Speaker 1: hip um on the spine dropped him and it also
- 12:24Speaker 1: hit the artery, knocking another arrow and shot him in
- 12:27Speaker 1: the heart and then he went down pretty quick after that.
- 12:29Speaker 1: But there I've been seeing. The food source has been
- 12:32Speaker 1: pretty good. They're pounding the soybeans and not that they're
- 12:35Speaker 1: dried out and it's getting colder. And then I've also
- 12:38Speaker 1: got half the plot planted in wildlife perfect basket of glen,
- 12:42Speaker 1: so they've been tearing those up. But I think good
- 12:45Speaker 1: green food source near the bedding has been pretty important
- 12:48Speaker 1: from what I've seen the past week. You mentioned that
- 12:50Speaker 1: a lot of your trail cameras right now are on sign.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Are you seeing a lot of fresh rubs and scrapes
- 12:56Speaker 1: showing up in the woods right now? Yep, especially the
- 12:59Speaker 1: past week. Um. The week before it was pretty warm,
- 13:02Speaker 1: but this last week it's cooled down quite a bit.
- 13:04Speaker 1: And I think between between the time of the month
- 13:07Speaker 1: that it is and the weather cooling down, my scrape
- 13:10Speaker 1: activity has picked up big time on all my cams.
- 13:14Speaker 1: I think I have all my all my cameras set
- 13:16Speaker 1: up on mock scrape licking branches right now. And yeah,
- 13:20Speaker 1: definitely the last week, especially the last five days, the
- 13:22Speaker 1: bucks have really been hitting them pretty hard. What is
- 13:25Speaker 1: a decoying or a calling set up look like for
- 13:28Speaker 1: you in Nebraska at the end of October. End of October, um,
- 13:33Speaker 1: I like to be in good pinch points, like typical
- 13:36Speaker 1: rut funnels between dope betting areas, and usually I'll sit
- 13:40Speaker 1: for a couple hours in the morning, left the deer
- 13:43Speaker 1: filter into the beds, and then I'll try UM a
- 13:46Speaker 1: grunning sequence with my UM Dear Society Extinguisher grunt tube,
- 13:51Speaker 1: and then I'll wait probably ten fifteen minutes and then
- 13:53Speaker 1: do a not a not too heavy and aggressive of
- 13:56Speaker 1: rattling sequence, but UM do a short, short, kind of
- 14:01Speaker 1: heavier sparring sound for that, and then probably wait an
- 14:06Speaker 1: hour hour and a half before I try it again.
- 14:09Speaker 1: Going forward. Then, in the next week or so, what
- 14:11Speaker 1: do you think that buck activity is going to be
- 14:13Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Nebraska? Looking
- 14:16Speaker 1: at the forecast and the moon phases, I think it's
- 14:19Speaker 1: really gonna skyrocket. UM. Our attempts are gonna drop, the
- 14:22Speaker 1: highs are going to be low to mid thirties UM
- 14:25Speaker 1: and northwest winds, which I think is ideal for end
- 14:28Speaker 1: of October especially and based off the moon. UM got
- 14:32Speaker 1: another full moon coming, so I think it's really gonna really,
- 14:35Speaker 1: really gonna pick up scrape activity in the next week. UM,
- 14:37Speaker 1: I think you might might see a little bit of
- 14:40Speaker 1: chasing bucks pushing dose around, even though we're still a
- 14:43Speaker 1: few weeks out. From the true rut, but I think
- 14:45Speaker 1: the activity will definitely pick up in the next week. Alright, Garey,
- 14:49Speaker 1: we'll congrats on the great book. Good luck with the
- 14:51Speaker 1: rest of your sides. Thanks for joining me. Yeah, thanks
- 14:54Speaker 1: for having me on alright and joining us on the line.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Next is Taylor Chamberlain, the Urban Bell them in in Virginia. Now,
- 15:01Speaker 1: Taylor in Virginia, what would you say the buck activity
- 15:04Speaker 1: has been lately on a scale of one to ten.
- 15:07Speaker 1: On a scale of one to ten, it's been a
- 15:10Speaker 1: three point seven five. Yeah, really not a lot of
- 15:13Speaker 1: buck activity, uh, in the daylight hours that we're seeing here. Um,
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yet you know, we're right at the the point of
- 15:22Speaker 1: October where I call it kind of like the sign explosions, so, um,
- 15:27Speaker 1: the deer are are kind of getting ready to just
- 15:30Speaker 1: pop here. And you know, every day from now through
- 15:34Speaker 1: the next ten days or so, I think you're just
- 15:37Speaker 1: going to continue seeing a ton more sign get laid
- 15:41Speaker 1: out in the woods. And that's really important sign based
- 15:46Speaker 1: on what you're hunting and where you're hunting and kind
- 15:49Speaker 1: of you know, obviously you don't want to go blowing
- 15:52Speaker 1: into your areas scouting them fully right now, but it's
- 15:55Speaker 1: really important to pay attention um and and kind of
- 15:59Speaker 1: lightly scout and see what's going on, because if you're
- 16:02Speaker 1: not keeping your head on a swivel right now, you
- 16:04Speaker 1: could be missing out on some really great hunting and
- 16:07Speaker 1: great spots to be hunting in. As an urban bow hunter,
- 16:11Speaker 1: what sort of food sources are you focused on during
- 16:14Speaker 1: pre rout? So right now where I am in northern Virginia,
- 16:18Speaker 1: I am really focused on the white oaks. Uh. This
- 16:22Speaker 1: year we have a really really poor white oak crop,
- 16:26Speaker 1: which is really good as a hunter. People don't really
- 16:29Speaker 1: think about that, but when there are a ton of
- 16:31Speaker 1: acorns around, the deer don't have to to choose where
- 16:35Speaker 1: they're going. They can literally just you know, go at
- 16:38Speaker 1: random and find some makecorns to eat. However, when you
- 16:41Speaker 1: have a year like this where you have a really
- 16:44Speaker 1: poor acorn crop, you know where the deer are going
- 16:47Speaker 1: to be. So when you find some white oaks that
- 16:48Speaker 1: are dropping, the deer are really going to hammer them hard.
- 16:51Speaker 1: So what I do this time of year is I'm
- 16:54Speaker 1: looking for for any and all white oaks that are dropping.
- 16:58Speaker 1: I will pretty much bet the farm and guarantee that
- 17:02Speaker 1: if you find a way that's it's dropping. This time
- 17:04Speaker 1: of year, you will find sign everywhere around it, communal scrapes,
- 17:09Speaker 1: and a lot of deer activity around it as well.
- 17:14Speaker 1: When do you expect to start seeing some seeking and
- 17:17Speaker 1: chasing in Virginia? This week is one of my favorite
- 17:21Speaker 1: weeks the hunt of all time because the deer, the
- 17:25Speaker 1: bucks are starting to really kind of put some sign
- 17:29Speaker 1: down and they're starting to attend to that sign. It's
- 17:31Speaker 1: a really, really really good time to get in to
- 17:35Speaker 1: a communal scrape or a scrape line um early morning
- 17:40Speaker 1: was deer gonna hit those right before they go back
- 17:42Speaker 1: to bed. They're gonna be on their feet just a
- 17:43Speaker 1: little bit longer in daylight hours. We've really kind of
- 17:47Speaker 1: are crossing the threshold right now from deer being bedded up,
- 17:52Speaker 1: but I'm talking about buck bucks being bedded up before sunrise.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Now they're going to be moving around a little bit.
- 17:58Speaker 1: That first hour to hours of daylight are really really good.
- 18:02Speaker 1: This is my absolute favorite time of year to kill
- 18:06Speaker 1: a buck in his core home range over a scrape
- 18:10Speaker 1: in the morning before he starts venturing out. So everybody
- 18:13Speaker 1: that's been out there doing their homework for you know,
- 18:16Speaker 1: all year long, uh, finding deer, figuring out where their
- 18:20Speaker 1: home ranges are. This is the time to finally move
- 18:24Speaker 1: in on those stands, um over that that communal scrape
- 18:28Speaker 1: or destination, spot tight on buck betting, and put an
- 18:32Speaker 1: arrow in one of them. Absolute best week of the
- 18:34Speaker 1: year as far as I've been scerning, for killing deer
- 18:37Speaker 1: that you know about before they start chasing and going
- 18:41Speaker 1: miles away where you don't have control of them. I
- 18:44Speaker 1: know you're kind of getting new permissions on properties throughout
- 18:47Speaker 1: the year. So if you get access to a new
- 18:49Speaker 1: piece of land in late October, what are you looking
- 18:52Speaker 1: for when you go in? You're doing some in season scouting.
- 18:56Speaker 1: So in season scouting, I'm trying to tread as lightly
- 18:58Speaker 1: as possible. So I'm going to go in, I'm gonna
- 19:00Speaker 1: poke around, looking for food, looking for sign It's very
- 19:05Speaker 1: easy to find the obviously, you know, white oaks are
- 19:09Speaker 1: are easy to identify based on their bark um. But
- 19:13Speaker 1: even if they don't have white oaks, you can find
- 19:15Speaker 1: Deer really hit maple trees really hard this time of year.
- 19:20Speaker 1: The leaves um. They really really like the maple leaves.
- 19:24Speaker 1: If you find some some droppings on the ground, a
- 19:27Speaker 1: lot of deer sign, that's obviously a great place to start.
- 19:31Speaker 1: And then if you start seeing you know, rubs and scrapes,
- 19:34Speaker 1: those are going to be around a lot of the
- 19:36Speaker 1: predominant food sources right now, and that's a great place
- 19:39Speaker 1: to set up. So when I'm going in scouting, I
- 19:41Speaker 1: tread lightly. I'm looking for a sign. I always take
- 19:45Speaker 1: a couple of cellular trail cameras with me. I'm gonna
- 19:47Speaker 1: pop them out um or regular trail cameras, whatever you have,
- 19:51Speaker 1: But I want to get as much intel as quickly
- 19:54Speaker 1: as possible. And then for me, I'm looking for the
- 19:58Speaker 1: best tree to hunt, has the the best access, that
- 20:03Speaker 1: is the least intrusive, So I'm looking to be able
- 20:06Speaker 1: to get in and out without bumping deer or without
- 20:10Speaker 1: uh spooking deer. Getting intel that first sit on all
- 20:13Speaker 1: of these properties is always one of the best to
- 20:16Speaker 1: kill a deer. So wait until you have the intel
- 20:19Speaker 1: that you know we're there, don't just wing it, and
- 20:22Speaker 1: you will have a very successful hunt. I would imagine
- 20:24Speaker 1: in an urban environment, is calling in decoying? Are those
- 20:28Speaker 1: tactics that you'll use? Yeah? Absolutely, I mean you have
- 20:31Speaker 1: to be careful with the decoying um sometimes because you
- 20:35Speaker 1: don't want to draw a ton of attention to yourself
- 20:37Speaker 1: as a hunter. And it looks a little odd if
- 20:39Speaker 1: there's a dough or a buck standing in the corner
- 20:42Speaker 1: of the yard for four or five hours. But um,
- 20:45Speaker 1: you know, just like they work on on big rural areas,
- 20:50Speaker 1: decoing calling especially works very well. Um. You just have
- 20:55Speaker 1: to remember that it's all up to the buck, and
- 20:57Speaker 1: the bucks have different personalities. Some of our fighters summer shy,
- 21:01Speaker 1: um summer vocals, some are not so. Um. You know,
- 21:05Speaker 1: being able to see those animals and call to them
- 21:08Speaker 1: and kind of read their body language will really help
- 21:10Speaker 1: you in in doing any type of calling for those animals.
- 21:14Speaker 1: But also you know, just throwing a grunt out here
- 21:16Speaker 1: or they're doing a little bit of light rattling. Uh.
- 21:19Speaker 1: That's always been helpful for me and it's definitely something
- 21:21Speaker 1: that I'm going to continue to use in my arsenal
- 21:24Speaker 1: going forward. Then, in the sex week or so, what
- 21:26Speaker 1: do you think that bucket activity is going to be
- 21:28Speaker 1: on a scale of one to ten in Virginia. I
- 21:31Speaker 1: think it's gonna be a solid ten. I mean, I'm
- 21:33Speaker 1: looking really forward to every morning coming up here. You
- 21:37Speaker 1: will not find me not in the woods. It's gonna
- 21:41Speaker 1: be a really, really, really good week coming up, and
- 21:44Speaker 1: I hope all you guys are getting out there. I mean,
- 21:46Speaker 1: we have warm weather coming through this week. It's going
- 21:49Speaker 1: to be in the mid to upper seventies with lowse
- 21:53Speaker 1: kind of in the upper forties, lower fifties in the morning.
- 21:56Speaker 1: That's really going to condense the dear activity down to
- 21:59Speaker 1: those early morning hours that they are not going to
- 22:02Speaker 1: be running around the middle of the day. They're not
- 22:05Speaker 1: gonna be up on your feet until the very end
- 22:07Speaker 1: of the day to feed, and it's just a great
- 22:10Speaker 1: time to catch a lot of condensed activity in the morning.
- 22:13Speaker 1: So find those big communal scrapes, find the food sources.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Um the scrape areas that are removed from food sources
- 22:21Speaker 1: that can get in on and hunt in the mornings
- 22:24Speaker 1: are my absolute favorite spot and this is my favorite
- 22:26Speaker 1: week to hit them. So I highly recommend people getting
- 22:29Speaker 1: out in the woods and hopefully arrowing their their target animals.
- 22:34Speaker 1: All right, Taylor, love following your content at Urban Bowman.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Good luck with the rest of your season, and thanks
- 22:39Speaker 1: for joining me. Thanks Spencer, you have a good luck
- 22:41Speaker 1: out there. Alright and joining us on the line. Next
- 22:45Speaker 1: is Scott spits Lee from six Packs and Racks podcast
- 22:48Speaker 1: in Michigan. Now Scott in Michigan. What would you say
- 22:51Speaker 1: the buck activity has been lately? On a scale of
- 22:54Speaker 1: one to ten, I give it about a seven or eight.
- 22:57Speaker 1: I've been noticing a lot of my cheerbuck movement during
- 23:01Speaker 1: the day, um browsing around. I think if you've got
- 23:04Speaker 1: them patterned right now, I think it's a pretty decent
- 23:07Speaker 1: time to get on them before they start running around chasing.
- 23:09Speaker 1: Does I know you just aired a big Michigan buck
- 23:12Speaker 1: yesterday October nineteen. Tell us a little bit about that setup.
- 23:17Speaker 1: So on this setup, I set up on a river bottom,
- 23:20Speaker 1: and it's a set that we actually just put up
- 23:23Speaker 1: the day prior. We have been noticing bucks cruising through
- 23:26Speaker 1: here kind of late morning midday ish, so I knew
- 23:30Speaker 1: to get in there and try to get in there
- 23:32Speaker 1: early and get set up quietly and uh catch one
- 23:36Speaker 1: running by later morning midday. So I ended up sitting,
- 23:40Speaker 1: or planned on sitting until about eleven o'clock, and uh,
- 23:43Speaker 1: sure enough, one of my target bucks had been brushing
- 23:47Speaker 1: and making a scrape about thirty yards from me. And
- 23:50Speaker 1: you worked my way or worked his way, um, basically
- 23:55Speaker 1: not right under me, but about twenty yards away, and
- 23:58Speaker 1: uh presented me with a beautiful shot. Unfortunately, Um, I'm
- 24:03Speaker 1: still tracking that deer and I was shot that deer yesterday.
- 24:06Speaker 1: What were those bucks doing moving through their midmorning? And
- 24:09Speaker 1: is that something that you notice every year? Is that
- 24:11Speaker 1: a historical pattern for late October in that area? Yeah,
- 24:15Speaker 1: usually around this time of year. Um, the little bucks
- 24:17Speaker 1: are kind of chasing. Does I've noticed a lot and
- 24:21Speaker 1: usually about a week prior's um when that happens, and
- 24:25Speaker 1: then a week later you'll start seeing the bigger bucks chasing.
- 24:29Speaker 1: But I think they're just kind of patterned right now.
- 24:32Speaker 1: I think they're just comfortable. Um, there hasn't been too
- 24:35Speaker 1: much pressure on this property that I'm hunting right now,
- 24:39Speaker 1: and I just pick the best weather date and uh,
- 24:43Speaker 1: best possible spot that I had thought that give me
- 24:46Speaker 1: an opportunity, and um, I had that opportunity. So are
- 24:51Speaker 1: you seeing any signmaking it in Michigan? Lots of sign um,
- 24:55Speaker 1: lots of fresh robs and scrapes. Um, they're getting hitten
- 25:01Speaker 1: often to what food sources are relevant for hunters in
- 25:05Speaker 1: that part of the country right now. Um, I'd say
- 25:08Speaker 1: around me, it's spend fresh cut corn, um, fresh cut beans.
- 25:14Speaker 1: They just cut corn across the road um from our
- 25:19Speaker 1: property here. And I've noticed a lot of deer feeding
- 25:22Speaker 1: out there throughout the night. Um. Obviously acorns are still
- 25:28Speaker 1: getting eight right now. Um. And I've noticed a lot
- 25:31Speaker 1: of browsing. I mean there don't just eat good food sources.
- 25:36Speaker 1: They eat anything green I've noticed. So UM. Definitely don't
- 25:41Speaker 1: just focus on food sources this time of year in
- 25:45Speaker 1: a pressured neighborhood like what you're hunting in Michigan. Do
- 25:49Speaker 1: you try tactics like calling and decoy, Um, only when
- 25:53Speaker 1: I see them. And I actually had this happened to
- 25:57Speaker 1: me about four sets ago. I had another one of
- 26:01Speaker 1: my target bucks, uh, about sixty yards and he was
- 26:05Speaker 1: just browsing about twenty minutes too dark, and I ended
- 26:11Speaker 1: up calling and he didn't hear me. So I called
- 26:14Speaker 1: a little louder. And you probably should just like call
- 26:17Speaker 1: behind you to make it so they don't know exactly
- 26:20Speaker 1: what direction or you know about the spot you called from,
- 26:23Speaker 1: because I made that mistake and he picked me off
- 26:26Speaker 1: right after I called, And I was just trying to
- 26:28Speaker 1: call it to get his attention, and uh, he ended
- 26:32Speaker 1: up getting spooked and ran away after that. So I
- 26:35Speaker 1: technically I would call if I see the deer or buck.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I won't blind call. I don't do a lot of
- 26:41Speaker 1: blind calling. Maybe during the rut when it's hot, but
- 26:45Speaker 1: usually not this time of year. Going forward, then in
- 26:48Speaker 1: he thinks week or so, what do you think that
- 26:50Speaker 1: buck activity is going to be on a scale of
- 26:52Speaker 1: one to ten in Michigan? But the next week, week
- 26:55Speaker 1: and a half, I would give it about a nine.
- 26:58Speaker 1: It's um, full moon's coming. Uh, you know it's pre rut.
- 27:03Speaker 1: It is just around the corner. You're gonna start seeing
- 27:06Speaker 1: those mature bucks on their feet through day on in
- 27:08Speaker 1: daylight chasing. Does um, I think your best bet is
- 27:12Speaker 1: to start hunting down when the dough betting around that time.
- 27:16Speaker 1: So yeah, within the next week, I think it's gonna
- 27:19Speaker 1: be pretty good out here. All right, scout, Well, good
- 27:22Speaker 1: luck with your tracking. I hope this story has a
- 27:24Speaker 1: happy ending. Thanks for joining me. I appreciate it. Sponsor
- 27:28Speaker 1: alright and joining us on the line. Next is Dan
- 27:30Speaker 1: Moultrie in Georgia. From Moultrie, now, Dan in Georgia, what
- 27:34Speaker 1: would you say, the buck activities ben lately on a
- 27:36Speaker 1: scale of one to ten. You know, we're hunting middle
- 27:40Speaker 1: Georgia and George is pretty much the same all the
- 27:43Speaker 1: way throughout the state. But we're right in the middle,
- 27:46Speaker 1: so it's pretty representative. But the the buck activity has
- 27:50Speaker 1: been like a four on a ten point scale. They
- 27:54Speaker 1: have been, uh, you see the young deer chasing a
- 27:58Speaker 1: little bit. The young bucks are chasing. They have no
- 28:00Speaker 1: idea why they're chasing, but they're chasing. You see the
- 28:04Speaker 1: increase in scrapes and rubbed activity going on, and they're
- 28:07Speaker 1: heading towards that. Usually around November eight is the Georgia
- 28:12Speaker 1: You know, you can't count on it exactly every year,
- 28:14Speaker 1: but sometimes around November eight the peak of the rug. Now,
- 28:18Speaker 1: I know, you haunt all over the South. How does
- 28:20Speaker 1: the timing of George's rout differ from other states in
- 28:23Speaker 1: that region? You know what's great about that is is
- 28:28Speaker 1: we've got a ranch in Texas and Alabama and Georgia,
- 28:31Speaker 1: and we've we last week or so, we had bow
- 28:37Speaker 1: Jackson out there and and who's a great bow hunter,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and they're just not you know, they're just barely coming
- 28:43Speaker 1: out of a summer activity in Texas right now, but
- 28:47Speaker 1: Georgia you can sort of always count on November eight.
- 28:50Speaker 1: You can count on Texas always about November or December tenth,
- 28:54Speaker 1: and you can count on Alabama about January tenth. And
- 28:58Speaker 1: so it's really good, especially slee if guys are hunting
- 29:01Speaker 1: only rut activity and having the chance to kill the
- 29:05Speaker 1: biggest deer possible, which usually that brings. That's great because
- 29:09Speaker 1: you get to go to each different state and hunt
- 29:11Speaker 1: the best of the best during that time, so that
- 29:13Speaker 1: that affords a hunter a great opportunity. Specifically talking about Georgia,
- 29:18Speaker 1: then when do you expect to start seeing some seeking
- 29:21Speaker 1: and chasing from mature bucks? I would say that that's
- 29:26Speaker 1: probably uh, with you would start seeing the age class
- 29:30Speaker 1: go up on the seeking and chasing. Uh, We're we
- 29:34Speaker 1: usually probably the end of next week. Rattling pre rattling
- 29:39Speaker 1: will be very very effective, especially for people that have
- 29:43Speaker 1: are hunting in a correct boat buck to doe ratio area.
- 29:47Speaker 1: But ours within a week we'll be rattling. Uh November eight,
- 29:53Speaker 1: you better strap on your belt and to stand because
- 29:56Speaker 1: they're gonna be wide open. Are you seeing a lot
- 29:59Speaker 1: of signmaker right now in Georgia, lots of increase in
- 30:03Speaker 1: scrapes and rubs, and the difference than the velvet rubs
- 30:07Speaker 1: that they've done, you know, a month ago. The lots
- 30:10Speaker 1: of uh pre rut rubs getting ready for the rud,
- 30:14Speaker 1: lots of scrapes. Every logging road through any of the
- 30:17Speaker 1: woods with an overhanging branch has a scrape under it's
- 30:21Speaker 1: It appears to be starting a textbook year for for
- 30:25Speaker 1: the rudd in Georgia. What food sources are relevant for
- 30:28Speaker 1: white tails in that part of the country right now? Uh,
- 30:33Speaker 1: natural food sources besides manmade which everyone controls themselves, and
- 30:38Speaker 1: food plots are putting out free choice supple months are
- 30:42Speaker 1: feeding from the the musketines are just playing out right now.
- 30:48Speaker 1: That's really our earliest really good food source. The if
- 30:52Speaker 1: you're lucky enough to have some chestnut trees, which we
- 30:56Speaker 1: do on the property, of course, that is tremendous food
- 30:59Speaker 1: habitat one for the deer when they drop those. But
- 31:02Speaker 1: the the muscadins are playing out. The white oaks appear
- 31:06Speaker 1: to be full in the canopy, but they're a little
- 31:08Speaker 1: bit late dropping. But you're just seeing some dropping uh
- 31:12Speaker 1: right now is when you find that sweetheart tree that
- 31:15Speaker 1: is really outproducing dropping a lot more acrons and the
- 31:18Speaker 1: rest of on the white oaks, but within the next
- 31:20Speaker 1: week they ought to be wide open. Now, obviously, as
- 31:24Speaker 1: the founder of Multrie, you run a lot of trail cameras,
- 31:27Speaker 1: So how do you utilize cell cameras in pre rut
- 31:30Speaker 1: and during the rut? And how is that different than
- 31:33Speaker 1: maybe a regular trail camera. You know, you can tell
- 31:36Speaker 1: what one of the neatest tricks with cell cameras is.
- 31:40Speaker 1: You can pattern deer so well before the RUDD activity
- 31:43Speaker 1: and you've got the same buck coming in the same time,
- 31:46Speaker 1: within minus the same day, same group of bucks comes
- 31:49Speaker 1: in in the bachelor groups, same group of doose come in.
- 31:52Speaker 1: You can monitor that. With the increase in RUD activity, though,
- 31:57Speaker 1: you'll start seeing bucks fall out of the groups, You'll
- 32:00Speaker 1: start seeing new bucks come in. You'll get pictures of
- 32:03Speaker 1: the buck coming through, not eating, just pushing it deer.
- 32:07Speaker 1: But one of the neatest tips that I've been given
- 32:10Speaker 1: lately is with self can Self cameras are taking over
- 32:14Speaker 1: the camera businesses. Everybody knows the but getting the signal
- 32:19Speaker 1: seems to be the difficult part. It doesn't matter whose
- 32:21Speaker 1: brand it is hopefully it's our brand, but we're really
- 32:24Speaker 1: with anybody. It's it's the getting a signal. One of
- 32:28Speaker 1: the neatest to everybody says, oh, I put the camera
- 32:30Speaker 1: up and I can't quite get a signal. We had
- 32:33Speaker 1: an area that, in fact is the area that I
- 32:35Speaker 1: bow hunted. It's extremely hard to get a signal out.
- 32:38Speaker 1: Move the camera up to your tree stand. You've already
- 32:41Speaker 1: got to stand in a climbing deal where you're gonna
- 32:43Speaker 1: be twenty ft up. Some people are my age, I'm
- 32:46Speaker 1: gonna go and and you're twenty ft up. The signal
- 32:51Speaker 1: comes in beautifully and it's a really I kind of
- 32:54Speaker 1: like the perspective from a bug better because you can
- 32:57Speaker 1: really see the rack and analyze the rack better. Where
- 32:59Speaker 1: some time if you don't get it on the ground level.
- 33:02Speaker 1: But if if the tip of the year for us
- 33:04Speaker 1: is if you're having trouble getting a cell phone signal,
- 33:07Speaker 1: move the camera up and point it down out of
- 33:09Speaker 1: your out of your tree stand, and then you'll really
- 33:12Speaker 1: be getting your signal better. So where are you running
- 33:15Speaker 1: a lot of your trail cameras in late October and
- 33:18Speaker 1: orly November, we keep them on all food sources on
- 33:23Speaker 1: all protein feeders, on all spin feeders, and we would
- 33:29Speaker 1: put you know, we don't really put one on scrapes
- 33:33Speaker 1: and rugs. But for people that's never done it, it's
- 33:36Speaker 1: it's a neat deal for them to see that, you know,
- 33:39Speaker 1: what they may have heard about old fodder, about hay
- 33:42Speaker 1: the buck, or revisit that scrape or ductin revisit or
- 33:45Speaker 1: see the same crap. It's neat for them to see
- 33:48Speaker 1: what dear activity really on it, which deer actually comes
- 33:52Speaker 1: and they can differentiate between what they've been told its
- 33:56Speaker 1: tailgate talk, and what's the real deal on it going forward. Then,
- 33:59Speaker 1: in the next week or so, what do you think
- 34:01Speaker 1: that buck activity is going to be on a scale
- 34:03Speaker 1: of one to ten in Georgia in the in the
- 34:07Speaker 1: next week or so, again, right now i'd rated a four.
- 34:11Speaker 1: The next week or so, it'd be a six. Two
- 34:13Speaker 1: weeks it will be a Tana's trap it home, all right,
- 34:16Speaker 1: Dan Well, I like your optimism. Good luck with the
- 34:18Speaker 1: Haunts the rest of your season. Thanks for joining me,
- 34:20Speaker 1: Hey Spencer, thank you so much, Thanks for what you
- 34:23Speaker 1: all do, thanks for informing all the others. And that
- 34:26Speaker 1: concludes this week's episode of rout Fresh Radio. Thanks to Garrett, Taylor,
- 34:30Speaker 1: Scott and Dan for joining me, and thank you guys
- 34:33Speaker 1: for listening. These next seven days are one of my
- 34:36Speaker 1: favorite stretches of the year, and I hope you'll be
- 34:39Speaker 1: in the woods taking advantage of the increased dear movement.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Look fresh sign, pay attention to what your trail cameras
- 34:45Speaker 1: are telling you, and don't forget the rattling antlers and
- 34:48Speaker 1: grunt tube at home. The next time I talked to you,
- 34:51Speaker 1: we're gonna hear a lot about seeking and chasing, so
- 34:53Speaker 1: get ready for the woods to light up. Until then,
- 34:56Speaker 1: stay wired, Haunt
