- 0:00Welcome to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We're back with Dan Hurley.
- 0:04Been away for a few weeks with the holidays and everything else that's going on,
- 0:08and in a coach and congratulations another big win on the road at Xavier.
- 0:12We're going to talk about that, and of course the win at Butler
- 0:15and in front of two tremendousness crowds. I felt, uh, and I
- 0:20know the guys were pretty happy about getting to the locker room after winning those
- 0:24two games. And there's a certain joy in winning, but winning on the
- 0:27road, I think there's even more satisfaction. Yeah, I think, you
- 0:34know, especially a hard fought road road game. It's yeah, you you
- 0:41you're back on the bus. You know, the locker room's obviously excited.
- 0:47You know. You you're kind of on the bus together back to the airport.
- 0:52So like the travel group, you know, kind of stays together,
- 0:55and you know you're enjoying the victory. Yeah, home, you know,
- 1:00big, you know, winn at homes pretty cool too because get to enjoy
- 1:03that with you know, with your fans and your family. So, uh,
- 1:08they're all good. Winds are good and losing bad. That's a very
- 1:15good philosophy by you. I like it these late nights, getting back really
- 1:19late. What do the guys do day after? Do you do you arrest
- 1:22them? Do they come back in for rehab stuff? What happens on these
- 1:26road games where you know we're getting back two and three and the more four
- 1:29in the morning. Yeah, So just it depends on what you got coming
- 1:33up next. If it's uh, you know, if if it was a
- 1:36Wednesday, if it was a Wednesday Saturday, you know, it would be
- 1:41a heavy film day with with a lot of recovery, recovery lift, uh,
- 1:47recovery work with with some slash therapist team and and uh you know,
- 1:53and then some just kind of light walk through and some shooting and maybe some
- 1:57you know, some uh some walkthrough on some new things you want to do
- 2:01offensively versity opponent. Yeah, if you're in a situation like we are now,
- 2:07it's because the way the schedule falls. Yeah, we have to take
- 2:10a day off today because of what's coming next week. And you know,
- 2:16so the players can do voluntary work on their own in terms of shooting or
- 2:23weightlifting, but we can't do anything as a team together with them until tomorrow.
- 2:30You kind of now fourteen and two, four and one in the conference.
- 2:34Twenty eighth straight week the Huskies have been ranked. That's pretty cool in
- 2:38the in and of itself. That tells you what you've been doing and accomplishing
- 2:42stuff with this team over the last couple of years. I was comparing it.
- 2:46This is kind of weird, but Gonzaga has been ranked for one hundred
- 2:50and forty two weeks in a row. It's crazy. Can you imagine that?
- 2:54I mean that's like years and years and years and years. Yeah,
- 2:59it's a you know, it's obviously it's a it's a true test of you
- 3:07know, a culture and and and excellence. I mean, it's just a
- 3:12to think about, like the Tom Izzo streak of consecutive and CUAA tournaments and
- 3:17you know that, you know, Gonzaga's you know, streak of being ranked,
- 3:22and just how hard it is to win a game, uh, win
- 3:24a conference game, to win a high major game. It's it's so hard
- 3:30to do. So you just know you have an incredibly high level of appreciation
- 3:37for coaches like Mark Few and what they're able to do over a long career.
- 3:43Yeah, I got to correct myself at Gonzag one hundred and forty four
- 3:46weeks in a row that they've been ranked. It's just amazing. And you
- 3:50just played Xavier, you know under Sean Miller, but other coaches too.
- 3:53There's a great tradition there in basketball in Cincinnati twenty seven straight winning seasons.
- 4:00I mean, Kansas has done it forty years in a row, Gonzaga thirty
- 4:02two, Duke twenty eight, Michigan State, and Xavier twenty seven straight years
- 4:08winning. I mean, can you imagine that is a long run for having
- 4:12winning records. Yeah, I think in a lot of those places, it's
- 4:16it's coaches that you know, we're there for a while, or you know,
- 4:21or coaches that were successful there and moved to a bigger place and then
- 4:28there was some continuity with with who got the job. I think a lot
- 4:31of a lot of those places you talked about are obviously incredible resources, but
- 4:39have the continuity and and yeah, it's tough to do. The win over
- 4:46Xavier, you know, of the last night was in front of another sellout
- 4:49crowd. I mean the Musketeers, Dan, they've won eighty five percent of
- 4:55the games played in that building, three hundred and eighteen and fifty eight coming
- 4:58in so as getting ready for a game like that in a place like that,
- 5:02how do you approach it with the team? Do you say, these
- 5:04guys never lose here, or do you say, we're about to win in
- 5:08this place. I mean, it's always to me, the lead up to
- 5:11games like that is always so important. I think that we had some road
- 5:16confidence obviously coming in off the Butler win against a really good Butler team that
- 5:26you know, but we knew what we're facing. It behavior, Their crowd
- 5:29is like it's one of the best crowds, and it's an awesome building,
- 5:33and you know, you get walking around that place and their game day production
- 5:39and you know even some of the you know, the core and the hallways,
- 5:45and you know just how their fans are. You know, the lighting
- 5:49and the you know, the smoke or just the whole presentation. It's impressive.
- 5:57And the fans are even when they're playing badly, they're they're into the
- 6:01game and they're they're they're they're you know, they're they're behind their team and
- 6:06they're willing them to uh to play better. And then when they start to
- 6:11play better, you know, the crowd becomes even bigger. Fact they're so
- 6:18yeah, it's it's underrated. I don't even know if it's still underrated.
- 6:23I think everyone that's now now that they've been in the Big East the last
- 6:27couple of years, or since the new Big East has been formed, excuse
- 6:30me, I think college basketball knows how hard it is to go in there
- 6:34to win. Yeah, they're six and four in the building this year,
- 6:38which is unheard of. Really, they've had their troubles because of loss and
- 6:42losing two good players unable to play Fremantle, a guy that tortured the Huskies
- 6:47over the last couple of years. So you're playing a game like this and
- 6:51and you know how good they are are on defense out of the arc.
- 6:56Getting off to the start you got off to from behind the arc was fabulous,
- 7:00and you talked about it before the game. Got to get off to
- 7:01a good start. You can talk about it, but you got to put
- 7:03the ball in the basket, and you guys did that, and that really
- 7:06helped. I thought, Yeah, the guys executed well. Yeah. I
- 7:12thought we like we cut, we caught move and and uh, I thought
- 7:15we held screens well because they're very physical at the point of screens. And
- 7:19uh, you know, we played like a veteran team We played like a
- 7:25you know, like a like a really good team that believed that they were
- 7:29gonna have what it took to win a win a hard road game, well
- 7:33five minute double figures. We're going to continue on the Xavier conversation, get
- 7:36back to Butler as well, look ahead to Georgetown. All that coming up.
- 7:40We continue on the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show with Dan Hurley here on lear Field
