- 0:00Dot com. Welcome to the Daily Quote, the
- 0:06podcast designed to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:11I'm your host, Andrew McGivern, and let's dive into today's
- 0:14quote of the day. Today's quote comes from Martin
- 0:17Short, Canadian actor, comedian, writer, Tony Award winner and
- 0:22one of the most beloved entertainers of the last five
- 0:25decades. A man who the world knows for
- 0:29making people laugh, and a man who has lived a life of profound
- 0:33complexity, extraordinary joy and deep personal loss.
- 0:39He once said no one is any one thing.
- 0:46For a sentence with only 5 words, it sure says a lot.
- 0:51The funny one, the serious one, the strong one, the one who
- 0:55struggles, the successful one, the one who never quite got
- 1:00there. We collapse entire human beings
- 1:04into a single characteristic and then live, or let others live
- 1:10inside that narrow definition as if it were the whole truth.
- 1:14But no one is any one thing, not even close.
- 1:21The person who makes the room laugh is also the person who
- 1:23sits in silence at 2:00 AM, missing the person they've lost.
- 1:28The one who projects confidence may have spent the last 10 years
- 1:32doubting everything, The one you've written off as difficult
- 1:38as a tenderness you've never been allowed to see.
- 1:41And the one who seems to have it all is quietly carrying
- 1:46something no one knows about. Martin Short understood this not
- 1:51as an abstract philosophy, but as the lived experience of his
- 1:55own life. The world knew him as one of the
- 1:58funniest men in Hollywood. But in private he lost his wife
- 2:03Nancy after 30 years of marriage, and he described her
- 2:07death as by far the most awful thing he's ever been through.
- 2:13But yet he kept going, and he said it was because his children
- 2:18were watching, looking to him to show them that the family was
- 2:22still standing. The comedian grieving, the man
- 2:27who makes the world laugh sitting on a porch at twilight,
- 2:31missing the person he loved the most.
- 2:34Both completely true, but neither is the whole story.
- 2:40This is what Short is pointing at.
- 2:42Every person you know, the very person you are, contains far
- 2:48more than the version you most often show the world, and the
- 2:53freedom that comes from really accepting that for yourself and
- 2:57for the people around you is extraordinary.
- 3:00You stop expecting people to be only one thing.
- 3:04You stop expecting yourself to be only one thing, and you start
- 3:09allowing the full, complicated, irreducibly human truth of what
- 3:14a person actually is. No one is any one thing.
- 3:19That includes the people you admire most and the person you
- 3:23see in the mirror. So here's the question.
- 3:27What single story have you been telling about yourself, or about
- 3:32someone in your life that is leaving out far more than it
- 3:35includes? Because people are not their
- 3:38labels, not their worst moment and not their public face, not
- 3:45the version of them that fits most conveniently into your
- 3:48understanding. They are all of it.
- 3:53The light and the shadow, the laughter and the grief, the
- 3:58strength and the private struggling.
- 4:02Give yourself and the people around you the full picture.
- 4:07It's far more interesting than the one word version, and far
- 4:11more true. That's it for today.
- 4:15I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off for now, but I'll be back
- 4:20tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:26with another daily quote.
