Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the 1962 Roman Missal. A Feria of the twenty second Sunday after Pentecost, October 27 in the year of our Lord, 2026. Of today, Don Gaspar Lefevre writes, On this Sunday, one of the last of the ecclesiastical year, the church is full of thought of the day of Christ mentioned in the epistle or of the approaching of the end of the world. If the Lord considers our iniquities who will stand before him says the introit. Wherefore the liturgy speaks to us of divine mercy in the introit and the secret.
• 1:00
But to obtain it we must be full of mercy ourselves. It is good and pleasant indeed for brothers to be united proclaims the gradual. In the hour of danger let us use the prayer of the church which has an imminent social and fraternal character and which will be heard by God the author of all charity as we call upon him in the Collect and as King Oceiros heard in the prayers of Queen Esther recited in the offertory. Remembering in these days that the love of God and of our neighbor gives to the mind a greater understanding of divine things let then our charity increase more and more in light and in intelligence as said in the offertory that we may resist the more terrible assaults of the enemy. Wherefore last Sunday's gospel which used to be the gospel of this day speaks of divine mercy and of fraternal charity.
• 2:21
Today's gospel recalls to us a scene which took place on one of the last days of Jesus' life when he confounded by a reply, fool of wisdom, the trap. Whose image and superscription is this? Caesar's they reply. The law required that to pay the tribute they should first change the national coin into coin bearing the effigy of the Roman Emperor. Jesus convicts them of having themselves answered the question by this very change.
• 3:01
If you have procured coins with the effigy of Caesar you must have had the intention of paying the tribute. Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's. And the master completes his lesson by saying, and render to God the things that are God's for the human soul made to the image of its creator owes him the tribute of its adoration and obedience. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.
• 3:47
The introit, If thou, O Lord, should mark our guilt, master, who has strength to bear it? Ah, but with thee there is forgiveness, O God of Israel. Out of the depths I cry to thee, O Lord. Master, listen to my voice. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost as it was in the beginning is now and will be through all ages of ages.
• 4:25
Amen. If thou, O Lord, should mark our guilt, master, who has strength to bear it? Ah, but with thee there is forgiveness, O God of Israel. The Collect let us pray. O God our refuge and our strength who thyself art the fountain of all piety Look down, we beseech thee, on the fervent prayers of thy church and grant that what in faith we ask, we may in all profitable fullness receive through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages.
• 5:25
Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Philippians. Brethren, I am confident that he who has inspired this generosity in you will bring it to perfection, ready for the day when Jesus Christ comes. It is only fitting that I should entertain such hopes for you. You are close to my heart and I know that you all share my happiness in being a prisoner and being able to defend and assert the truth of the gospel.
• 6:07
God knows how I long for you all with the tenderness of Jesus Christ himself. And this is my prayer for you. May your charity grow richer and richer yet in the fullness of its knowledge and the depth of its perception, so that you may learn to prize what is of value. May nothing cloud your conscience or hinder your progress till the day when Christ comes. May you reap through Jesus Christ the full harvest of your justification to God's glory and his praise.
• 6:57
The gradual, gracious the sight and full of comfort when brethren live united gracious as balm poured on the head till it flows down onto the beard as balm that flowed down Aaron's beard. Alleluia. Alleluia. The Lord gives hope to all who fear him, their only help, their only stronghold. Alleluia.
• 7:33
A continuation of the holy gospel according to Matthew. At that time the Pharisees withdrew and plotted together to make Jesus betray himself in his talk. And they sent their own disciples to him with those who were of Herod's party and said, Master, we know well that thou art sincere, and teachest in all sincerity the way of God, that thou holdest no one in awe, making no distinction between man and man. Tell us then, is it right to pay tribute to Caesar or not? Jesus saw their malice.
• 8:25
Hypocrites, he said, why do you thus put me to the test? Show me the coinage in which the tribute is paid. So they brought him a silver piece, and he asked them whose is this likeness? Whose name is inscribed on it? Caesar's, they said.
• 8:52
Whereupon he answered, why then give back to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's? The offertory. O Lord, all power is at thy command. Do not forget me now. So frame my utterance that the king may look on my plea with favor.
• 9:25
The secret. Grant, O merciful God, that this saving right may unremittingly free us from all personal guilt and fend off all misfortune through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The common preface. Just it is indeed and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, through whom the angels praise thy majesty, the dominions worship it, the powers stand in awe, the heavens and the hosts of heaven together with the blessed Seraphim joyfully do magnify.
• 10:32
We entreat thee that thou command it be permitted us to join with them in confessing thee, while we say with lowly praise, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, the heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The communion.
• 11:12
I cry to thee, the God whoever hearest me, turn thy ear and listen to my plea. The post communion. Let us pray. We have taken the gifts of the sacred mystery, O Lord, humbly imploring that what thou hast bidden us to do in commemoration of thee may avail unto the help of our weakness, who livest and reignest with God the Father in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen.
• 11:59
In the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy ghost. Amen. Thanks be to God.
