- 0:07Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex bar.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Bazaar from Lazarre, Hello, everybody nailed it.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Joined us always by our bar.
- 0:18Speaker 3: Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bars.
- 0:21Speaker 4: To Catch Touch tu to Catch twenty two.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Hello, everybody, It's Evan Lazarre, It's Alex barth Say it's
- 0:32Speaker 1: behind the glass and we're back.
- 0:33Speaker 2: We're back, We're back.
- 0:35Speaker 1: A couple of weeks off vacation it was very nice.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But now I'm back and I'm ready. I'm excited. I
- 0:42Speaker 1: got a little bit of that training camp excitement on
- 0:46Speaker 1: Monday when I woke up Alex and you know, I'm
- 0:48Speaker 1: not that's not usually my thing. I'm not. I'm not like,
- 0:52Speaker 1: you know, cliche like that a lot of the time.
- 0:54Speaker 1: But you get the juice's phone in a little bit
- 0:56Speaker 1: that that football. We're close. We're close. But a lot
- 1:00Speaker 1: has happened since the last time we had a live show. Yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 1: none of it really about the Patriots, but Jalen Brown
- 1:08Speaker 1: was traded. The Red Sox have won fourteen straight and.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Somebody on Twitter said the Red Sox have not lost
- 1:15Speaker 2: and sweeping on the I think that's technically incorrect because
- 1:17Speaker 2: our last show was July first, right, so, and they
- 1:21Speaker 2: lost that night.
- 1:22Speaker 1: The last unfiltered that I did before I went on vacation.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Jalen Brown got traded later that day.
- 1:29Speaker 2: It was the same day, So that was July first, right,
- 1:31Speaker 2: that was.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Right before the fourth of July, so July second, maybe.
- 1:35Speaker 2: Okay, I think we did. Our last show was July first, Yes,
- 1:39Speaker 2: and the Red Sox lost that night.
- 1:40Speaker 1: Okay, So fourteen straight for the Red Sox. Jalen Brown traded.
- 1:44Speaker 1: No longer a Celtic. The World Cup is over, you
- 1:47Speaker 1: know that.
- 1:48Speaker 2: That just I noticed driving in.
- 1:50Speaker 1: That's over. That's done. And the TV's behind us are
- 1:56Speaker 1: going nuts. That's okay, all right, we'll fix them there.
- 2:00Speaker 1: Don't let it distract you. And now we're three days
- 2:05Speaker 1: away from training camp. I'll just poof. Here we are,
- 2:09Speaker 1: and this is the second time that we've come off
- 2:11Speaker 1: the team going to a super Bowl and then you know,
- 2:15Speaker 1: going through an off season afterwards. But I feel like
- 2:18Speaker 1: this one flew by, Like this offseason. I just feel
- 2:21Speaker 1: like I woke up and all of a sudden, we're
- 2:23Speaker 1: back into training camp. In the twenty twenty sixth season
- 2:26Speaker 1: is upon us, so exciting times. I'm excited to get
- 2:30Speaker 1: going again, get some real football, to have some real
- 2:33Speaker 1: opinions to talk about. But for one last time, we're
- 2:36Speaker 1: going to talk about things that haven't happened yet, right,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and we're gonna look forward and preview training camp. So
- 2:43Speaker 1: I have a list that I made of just sort
- 2:47Speaker 1: of burning questions, you know, your cliche training camp questions,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and I went positioned by a position, so I have
- 2:54Speaker 1: one for every position. We're going to run through those
- 2:57Speaker 1: before we do that, though, I do want to talk
- 2:59Speaker 1: about the little bit of news that we got last
- 3:02Speaker 1: night yesterday with the PUP guys and the NFI guys.
- 3:07Speaker 1: So for the Patriots, three names to know Harold Landry
- 3:10Speaker 1: and CJ. Deprie go on PUP and Terrell Jennings goes
- 3:14Speaker 1: on NFI. So not a major surprise. With Landry. I
- 3:18Speaker 1: think we knew that one was maybe coming. My big
- 3:22Speaker 1: takeaway though, with Landry, I feel like this is all
- 3:25Speaker 1: part of a bigger plan by the team to try
- 3:30Speaker 1: to keep Harold Landry as healthy as possible for the
- 3:34Speaker 1: duration of the regular season. Mike Rabele said it in
- 3:36Speaker 1: the spring. We're at the point of Harold lander was
- 3:39Speaker 1: a year nine, year ten something like that, where reps
- 3:44Speaker 1: in the beginning part of training camp or in August
- 3:47Speaker 1: or in preseason games probably not that important. So this
- 3:50Speaker 1: is about long term health and long term longevity for
- 3:54Speaker 1: him to be healthy. With that being said, I know
- 3:57Speaker 1: a lot of people have concerns about the edge position.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Gay Back is still in flux with that situation, but
- 4:05Speaker 1: just let's stick with the BUP guys for now, with
- 4:08Speaker 1: Landry Dupre and then NiFi with Jennings. Just what was
- 4:11Speaker 1: your takeaway from seeing those three names?
- 4:13Speaker 2: Well, first off, it is exciting that we're back here.
- 4:16Speaker 2: We're on the precipice of this. Let me just throw
- 4:17Speaker 2: that in. I also kind of felt the juice on Monday,
- 4:20Speaker 2: and I'll say this, like this is going to be
- 4:22Speaker 2: year nine for us covering the team. Actually get sentimental, honestly,
- 4:25Speaker 2: Andry's going in a year eight no sentimental, Just like
- 4:29Speaker 2: some of it has become routine. As much as I
- 4:31Speaker 2: enjoy it, I still get a little something when I
- 4:35Speaker 2: get the email that my credential has been approved. Not
- 4:37Speaker 2: that I don't expect it to be, but like hell,
- 4:40Speaker 2: like here we go, Ye're nine, let's get it. So
- 4:43Speaker 2: between Monday and that I've kind of been. I felt
- 4:45Speaker 2: that the juice this week. I felt the real juice.
- 4:48Speaker 2: I have a theory on that we can get to
- 4:50Speaker 2: on why maybe me and you specifically are feeling the
- 4:53Speaker 2: juice that we haven't in a while. On the PP
- 4:54Speaker 2: guys with Landry, they they could still sit him and
- 4:59Speaker 2: not put them on PE. I think that means that
- 5:01Speaker 2: he is still dealing with something. And I've talked about
- 5:04Speaker 2: a lot, and maybe more than anything else this offseason,
- 5:06Speaker 2: I'm worried about their situation on the edge. I actually
- 5:09Speaker 2: think it is the biggest concern going into camp. I
- 5:13Speaker 2: would rank it ahead of Christian Gonzalez's contract. Now that's
- 5:17Speaker 2: subject to change. If we get into mid August and
- 5:19Speaker 2: he's still not signed, then I would be more worried.
- 5:21Speaker 2: But and there's been reporting out. I don't know if
- 5:24Speaker 2: you want to get more to this, but Breer had
- 5:26Speaker 2: something on this. I think there was something on NFL
- 5:27Speaker 2: network maybe rap sheet that Devin Witherspoon's probably gonna sign first,
- 5:32Speaker 2: set the groundwork, then Gonzalez will sign, and it's like
- 5:35Speaker 2: all right. If Witherspoon was signed and they were still
- 5:37Speaker 2: waiting on Gonzalz, I'd be more worried, But I'm worried
- 5:39Speaker 2: about the edge than anything else. I will say. I
- 5:42Speaker 2: think some people have heard some people say, well, you know,
- 5:45Speaker 2: is herold Leanjury that good of a player that you
- 5:47Speaker 2: know his absence makes that much of a difference. I
- 5:50Speaker 2: think because of how much he fell off in the
- 5:51Speaker 2: second half last year, not even the second half really
- 5:53Speaker 2: after like a month and a half, people forget how
- 5:56Speaker 2: good he was at the start.
- 5:57Speaker 1: Of the season.
- 5:58Speaker 2: He still led the team in sad despite really being
- 6:01Speaker 2: a non factor down the stretch. If he's right, he's
- 6:05Speaker 2: a major boost for this defense. But he has to
- 6:07Speaker 2: be right, so you know, he's got to get back
- 6:09Speaker 2: on the field and get back into shape and all that.
- 6:12Speaker 2: You hope that happens sooner rather than later. One other
- 6:15Speaker 2: takeaway from this the other two guys that are on there,
- 6:17Speaker 2: which is Dupre and Jennings, both guys who were squarely
- 6:20Speaker 2: in the mix and roster battles I think for the
- 6:22Speaker 2: third tight end spot and third running back spot. So
- 6:24Speaker 2: Clock's kind of ticking on them because those are guys
- 6:26Speaker 2: that need to show out this summer to make the team,
- 6:29Speaker 2: and fair or not the old saying you can't make
- 6:31Speaker 2: the club from the tubs.
- 6:32Speaker 1: So yeah, I think with the edge when we were
- 6:35Speaker 1: texting about this a little bit last night, to me,
- 6:38Speaker 1: I guess the tiny bit of optimism that I have
- 6:43Speaker 1: with that position because I think the question I've been asking,
- 6:46Speaker 1: just to kind of preface this is why don't they
- 6:50Speaker 1: seem super concerned about it?
- 6:52Speaker 2: Right?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Because when we talked to Mike Rabel in the spring,
- 6:56Speaker 1: he seemed like he kind of dismissed it. A questions
- 7:00Speaker 1: about that position, you and I media fans, we look
- 7:04Speaker 1: at it from the outside looking in, and we say
- 7:08Speaker 1: that's the weakest spot on the roster. Right, that's the
- 7:10Speaker 1: weakest position on the roster. They don't really have enough there.
- 7:14Speaker 1: But then internally, at least what they're saying publicly is
- 7:18Speaker 1: that they feel okay about that spot. So my thought was, Okay, well,
- 7:22Speaker 1: why would they feel okay about it if we're so
- 7:24Speaker 1: panicked about it? And I think when you look at
- 7:27Speaker 1: it is that last year they made the Super Bowl
- 7:31Speaker 1: with kind of comparable talent at that position. You know,
- 7:35Speaker 1: Deraimont Jones and Calevon Chase on to me are a
- 7:38Speaker 1: clean one for one swab. If you look at their
- 7:40Speaker 1: numbers from last year, on a you know, pass rush numbers,
- 7:44Speaker 1: things like that, they're basically identical between those two guys.
- 7:47Speaker 1: I think they're kind of the same guy, honestly, Like
- 7:50Speaker 1: Draymond Jones may be a little bit bigger, and I
- 7:52Speaker 1: think they're hoping that he's gonna be a little bit
- 7:53Speaker 1: sturdier against a run than Chase on was. But from
- 7:56Speaker 1: a pressure rate, win rate, all those different types of metrics,
- 8:00Speaker 1: they're basically the same. So Draymond does is healthy, He's
- 8:05Speaker 1: gonna play a lot for this team. Landry and Atis
- 8:09Speaker 1: are big. They internally they seem to be really high
- 8:13Speaker 1: on Elijah Ponder, which we're gonna get to and in
- 8:15Speaker 1: the questions in a little bit. So the combination of Landry,
- 8:21Speaker 1: I guess Anthrony Jennings last year in Ponder versus this
- 8:25Speaker 1: year of Landry Akus and Elijah Ponder, I guess maybe
- 8:30Speaker 1: if you think everybody is eventually going to be healthy,
- 8:34Speaker 1: it's kind of the same group that they had last year.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Now you could say that that wasn't good enough, and
- 8:39Speaker 1: we could have that right.
- 8:40Speaker 2: I mean, when you got to the playoffs, they had
- 8:42Speaker 2: to blitz the crap out of teams to get pressure and.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Well, did they have to blitz the crap out of
- 8:47Speaker 1: the teams to get pressure or did they blitz the
- 8:49Speaker 1: crap out of teams because they knew it was the
- 8:51Speaker 1: best way to win. Maybe, But like when you're going
- 8:54Speaker 1: up against depleted offensive lines, backup quarterbacks, things like that,
- 9:00Speaker 1: sense to heat them up, right, I mean, that's just that.
- 9:03Speaker 1: Is that the way that it.
- 9:04Speaker 2: Just went, I guess, but it's and they could do
- 9:08Speaker 2: it again this year because they have a very good secondary,
- 9:10Speaker 2: but they have some deaf questions at corner, and it's
- 9:13Speaker 2: can you do it? It feels like a bit of
- 9:16Speaker 2: a house of cards to replicate. I think if, like
- 9:18Speaker 2: you said, if everybody's over the course of seventeen, right,
- 9:20Speaker 2: if everybody's healthy, I think they certainly have enough. But
- 9:23Speaker 2: you know, I in the same breath as is everybody healthy, Well,
- 9:27Speaker 2: one guy's on pup, another guy isn't even signed yet, right,
- 9:30Speaker 2: So the answer to that is already kind of no,
- 9:32Speaker 2: and the coaches of acknowledge even once Actis gets signed,
- 9:36Speaker 2: he's behind.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yeah. No, that's totally fair. I'm not trying to say
- 9:40Speaker 1: that there's not a concern there. I'm trying to figure
- 9:43Speaker 1: out if they're being if we're taking them at phase
- 9:45Speaker 1: value for what they're saying publicly, why internally do they
- 9:49Speaker 1: feel higher on this their edge group than they we
- 9:52Speaker 1: do externally. And I think the reason is is that
- 9:55Speaker 1: they kind of felt, probably feel that the talent is
- 9:58Speaker 1: comparable to what they had last year. That doesn't mean
- 10:00Speaker 1: that they have you know, Miles Garrett and you know
- 10:04Speaker 1: whatever on the other side, right like, this isn't the
- 10:06Speaker 1: Rams or something like that where they have, you know,
- 10:08Speaker 1: great pass rushers on the outside. They don't. But maybe
- 10:12Speaker 1: they feel like between some of the scheming that they
- 10:14Speaker 1: can do in the pass rush with the blitzer and
- 10:16Speaker 1: things like that, between the guys on the interior like
- 10:20Speaker 1: Milton Williams and Christian Barmore wreaking havoc, that just like
- 10:24Speaker 1: last year, they'll have enough. Now we'll see in the
- 10:27Speaker 1: long run. The CG. Dupree one is interesting because of
- 10:30Speaker 1: the battle that you mentioned at tight end for the
- 10:33Speaker 1: third spot. We're going to talk a little Eli Rearden
- 10:35Speaker 1: here in a second. But between guys like Dupre, Tanner, Arkin,
- 10:40Speaker 1: you know, I don't know what they think of Jack Westover,
- 10:43Speaker 1: you know, is he back in to being a tight
- 10:44Speaker 1: end at this point now? That they have full back
- 10:46Speaker 1: depth again, he doesn't have to moonlight as a full back.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Arkin's one guy that I remain high on that I
- 10:52Speaker 1: think has a chance to really make a push here
- 10:55Speaker 1: once the pads come on. So similar players though, like
- 10:58Speaker 1: if Dupray's not healthy, it's in. They're looking for that
- 11:02Speaker 1: third tight end to really be a blocker and maybe
- 11:04Speaker 1: we'll replace some of the things that Julian Hill left behind. Uh,
- 11:08Speaker 1: you know, Arkins gonna have a leg up if our
- 11:11Speaker 1: If Arkin's healthy for the first week of camp and
- 11:13Speaker 1: Depre isn't, then Arkins gonna have a leg up. So
- 11:16Speaker 1: that that's another name that I would just circle highlight
- 11:19Speaker 1: on the on the roster as a guy that I
- 11:21Speaker 1: think has a real chance here. Is Tanner Arkin as
- 11:23Speaker 1: like kind of an under the radar guy.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I I I don't think he's as much
- 11:27Speaker 2: under the radar as maybe he was coming in, just
- 11:30Speaker 2: because again the injury to Julian Hill and now C J. Jprie,
- 11:32Speaker 2: Like we're gonna see a good amount of him. I
- 11:33Speaker 2: think we even saw more of him than Eli Rariden,
- 11:36Speaker 2: I feel like in the spring, which is a little
- 11:38Speaker 2: surprising because Raredan was a top one hundred pick.
- 11:40Speaker 1: How many times have we seen that at the EUDFA
- 11:44Speaker 1: the Patriots endo, I mean a million times. It feels like,
- 11:48Speaker 1: wasn't the maybe I have the draft wrong? Was No?
- 11:52Speaker 1: I think I have the drafts wrong. Jac Jackson was
- 11:53Speaker 1: here before Jwan Williams, right, No, j C. Jackson he was.
- 12:00Speaker 2: But I think they took another corner in eighteen.
- 12:03Speaker 1: I just remember I the Juwan Williams one stands out
- 12:06Speaker 1: to me for some reason.
- 12:08Speaker 2: Well, so in eighteen they took Duke Dawson and Jason
- 12:12Speaker 2: jac Jackson.
- 12:13Speaker 1: That was what I was thinking of.
- 12:14Speaker 2: I think, I know, I think they had another UDFA
- 12:17Speaker 2: corner in twenty nineteen two. Let me try to find
- 12:20Speaker 2: this thing on.
- 12:21Speaker 1: I definitely remember the Dude Dawson, j C. Jackson thing
- 12:25Speaker 1: that was second round pick UDFA, and in typical Patriot fashion,
- 12:29Speaker 1: the UDFA ended up being the player.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Well, and did they take a corner in fourteen when
- 12:34Speaker 2: they had Malcolm Butler or maybe it was Jonathan Jones,
- 12:36Speaker 2: one of those guys who became a staple might have
- 12:39Speaker 2: been they took.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I mean, it's happened a million times. I feel like
- 12:43Speaker 1: with that sort of thing with Terrell Jennings just quickly.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Goes D'Angelo Ross was the same year as Okay, he
- 12:50Speaker 2: was a fringed for a player. It'sill in the league.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, on Browns, Terrell Jennings on NFI, you mentioned
- 12:58Speaker 1: the third running back, it's really him, jam Miller, Miles
- 13:02Speaker 1: Montgomery competing for that third spot. Lan Larrison, Oh my guy,
- 13:06Speaker 1: Land Larrison. How could I forget?
- 13:07Speaker 2: I mean, he looked like the favorite in the spring.
- 13:09Speaker 2: So yeah, maybe it's those three chasing Lean Larrison.
- 13:12Speaker 1: So it's interesting because I I think that the I
- 13:14Speaker 1: don't know what percentage I would put on it, but
- 13:16Speaker 1: I put a high percentage on kickoff return and special
- 13:19Speaker 1: teams value being big for that competition. So I don't
- 13:23Speaker 1: know exactly when we'll start to see that, But unless
- 13:28Speaker 1: some guy like Land Larrison is just so clearly a
- 13:31Speaker 1: better offensive player than everybody else, they every third running
- 13:34Speaker 1: back that they had last year return kicks, right, Antonio Gibson,
- 13:38Speaker 1: Dearness Johnson, Terrell Jennings, go right down the list.
- 13:40Speaker 2: It's a special team's role.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Whoever was active as a third running back on game
- 13:44Speaker 1: day was returning kickoffs.
- 13:45Speaker 2: I think that I also wouldn't roll out them potentially
- 13:48Speaker 2: keeping four running backs.
- 13:50Speaker 1: Yeah, well so, but four running backs plus Gilliam, who's
- 13:55Speaker 1: I would put with the tight ends? But regardless, you know,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you have a full back in there too. One of
- 14:01Speaker 1: the things that I've been thinking about a little bit,
- 14:04Speaker 1: you know, is there a chance that they only keep
- 14:06Speaker 1: two true tight ends. You're with Henry and.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Right, and you start off by elevating those guys off
- 14:11Speaker 2: the practice squad, and then you go from there.
- 14:13Speaker 1: Yeah, especially because you have Gilliam. Gilliam is right, you know,
- 14:17Speaker 1: basically whatever you want to call them, all right, So
- 14:19Speaker 1: those are the pup and if I guys we can
- 14:21Speaker 1: talk about that obviously top storylines with the team right now.
- 14:25Speaker 1: Christian Gonzales, Gay Bacchus, I would say Harold Landry probably
- 14:29Speaker 1: in that order. With my questions, I tried to go
- 14:32Speaker 1: a little deeper than that, this is Cash twenty two.
- 14:35Speaker 1: I didn't want to talk about the same thing that
- 14:36Speaker 1: we've been talking about for the last three months. I'm
- 14:39Speaker 1: sure we'll get calls and emails on those situations, so
- 14:41Speaker 1: once we get to that portion of the show, we
- 14:43Speaker 1: can give our takes of where we stand on those things.
- 14:46Speaker 1: So I tried to go a little bit deeper or
- 14:48Speaker 1: just a little bit different than some of the things
- 14:50Speaker 1: that we've been talking about at nauseum on the show
- 14:53Speaker 1: for the last month or so.
- 14:54Speaker 2: And I'll through out I did the same thing. I
- 14:56Speaker 2: put up my lists, So I did talk position battles
- 15:00Speaker 2: on Tuesday. This morning, I did my list of one
- 15:03Speaker 2: non position battle thing to watch at each position. And
- 15:07Speaker 2: to your point, if we want to dig a little deeper,
- 15:08Speaker 2: because those were the biggest, I will have tomorrow a
- 15:12Speaker 2: handful of players who are under the radar but in
- 15:15Speaker 2: the spotlight, and so I'll touch on some of those
- 15:17Speaker 2: two that'll be up tomorrow.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Love it. This is this is our time of year.
- 15:20Speaker 1: This is a great time of year for us. This
- 15:22Speaker 1: is the draft in training camp. I feel like our
- 15:25Speaker 1: wheelhouse on this show. Yeah, I feel like this is
- 15:28Speaker 1: our place.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Like the more players were dealing with that one any
- 15:31Speaker 2: given point, the better we do.
- 15:32Speaker 1: And because I'm not trying to pat ourselves on the back,
- 15:35Speaker 1: but like the ninety first guy matters on catch twenty two,
- 15:40Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear you say that it matters, so
- 15:42Speaker 1: I certainly the punter, I certainly hope you included special
- 15:45Speaker 1: teams on your list. I did the punter matters on
- 15:48Speaker 1: Catch twenty two despite your best effort. You want to
- 15:52Speaker 1: get into how they're going to replace Marte Mapu as
- 15:54Speaker 1: the personal protector on the punt unit.
- 15:56Speaker 2: That's a good one, but that's not what I had
- 15:58Speaker 2: for mine. We can do that on this show, and
- 16:00Speaker 2: Larrison got some reps at that this spring.
- 16:02Speaker 1: So there you go that that's why what are you
- 16:05Speaker 1: laughing about? Behind the glass there is what are you
- 16:07Speaker 1: laughing about?
- 16:08Speaker 5: You just sound so facetious when you say it.
- 16:10Speaker 1: Why do you think I sound facetio?
- 16:12Speaker 2: It's just how you sound. It's like, yeah, we we
- 16:14Speaker 2: do talk about it.
- 16:14Speaker 6: It is important, it is important, But I don't believe
- 16:18Speaker 6: you we cover the whole relief that you actually think that.
- 16:20Speaker 1: And I do think that, like if they so. Here
- 16:23Speaker 1: here's the thing. The reason why I think that is
- 16:25Speaker 1: that I think this team has got real aspirations. And
- 16:28Speaker 1: we get into the playoffs in January and the personal
- 16:31Speaker 1: protector screws up the protection and a plot and a
- 16:34Speaker 1: punt gets blocked in the AFC Championship game. Gonna we're
- 16:39Speaker 1: gonna have.
- 16:39Speaker 2: To talk about. So that's the thing. The last couple
- 16:41Speaker 2: of years no.
- 16:42Speaker 1: One time it happens is when it matters.
- 16:44Speaker 2: The last couple Leonard Taylor blocked a field goal last
- 16:46Speaker 2: year in the Championship that was massive. Might have him
- 16:49Speaker 2: on one of my lists here last couple of years.
- 16:53Speaker 2: And so to go back to your point, to go
- 16:55Speaker 2: back to something you said earlier, right, why does this
- 16:57Speaker 2: camp maybe feel little? Does this feel different for you
- 16:59Speaker 2: than the last few year? Yeah, because they have like
- 17:01Speaker 2: they should be a super Bowl. Well, I think there's
- 17:03Speaker 2: a layer to it too. It's not just oh, because
- 17:05Speaker 2: they're better. I don't think it's quite that simple. I
- 17:07Speaker 2: think it's because you know, we always go to cover
- 17:10Speaker 2: the whole roster like that is the approach I take
- 17:12Speaker 2: in my coverage. Cover the whole team one to ninety
- 17:14Speaker 2: one to fifty three, plus the practice squad, whatever it
- 17:16Speaker 2: may be. But sometimes when you do that and the
- 17:18Speaker 2: team's bad, it's like, hey, they're a four win team,
- 17:20Speaker 2: why are you talking about the third receiver? Now that
- 17:22Speaker 2: they're this good? These things matter because the last few years,
- 17:25Speaker 2: when we talked about this is a concern going into camp,
- 17:28Speaker 2: we meant that in the context of I'm concerned this
- 17:31Speaker 2: is going to prevent them from legitimately winning like games. Right,
- 17:35Speaker 2: this is gonna prevent them from having a representative showing
- 17:38Speaker 2: when we talk about concerns this year because I have
- 17:40Speaker 2: some concerns, I think you have some concerns. We talked
- 17:41Speaker 2: about the edge group. The concern is in the context
- 17:45Speaker 2: of getting back to and winning the Super Bowl. Yeah,
- 17:47Speaker 2: they're gonna be I really don't know. These are first
- 17:50Speaker 2: world problems, right, They're gonna be contending. Baseline, They contend
- 17:53Speaker 2: for the division. That's the baseline. So we do the
- 17:57Speaker 2: concerns differently that way, and then to add on to that.
- 17:59Speaker 2: And I know I've given this take a million times,
- 18:00Speaker 2: but I want to I'm gonna kind of hit people
- 18:03Speaker 2: over the head with it because I think it's important.
- 18:05Speaker 2: The first couple camps we covered, we didn't run out
- 18:09Speaker 2: of there going, well the quarterback, do we gotta talk
- 18:11Speaker 2: about the quarterback? Quarterback? Quarterback? Quarterback? Because it was Tom Brady.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Tom Brady completed ninety percent of his passes through three
- 18:18Speaker 2: touchdowns with no picks and training camp great Sky's blue. Right,
- 18:21Speaker 2: But then you do you go Cam Newton, Mac Jones
- 18:24Speaker 2: versus Cam Newton is mac Jones, Legit mac Jones versus
- 18:27Speaker 2: Bailey's appy is Drake May legit Drake May vers Dakobe Brissett,
- 18:31Speaker 2: And then like, okay, how much was Drake mayhel back?
- 18:34Speaker 2: Drake May's quarterback? Great, awesome, that's kind of not like
- 18:37Speaker 2: who the quarterback is is not a story. There's some
- 18:40Speaker 2: things about Drake May's game will look at talk about.
- 18:43Speaker 2: I mean, how many times the last five six years
- 18:46Speaker 2: did we come in here? Do previous iterations of this
- 18:48Speaker 2: show in the first thirty minutes was about whatever the
- 18:51Speaker 2: quarterback did, and there were times where that was fun,
- 18:55Speaker 2: But it's not how me and you came up. Covering camp.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I like a new story. I don't want to say
- 19:03Speaker 2: it used to because it wasn't that long ago and
- 19:05Speaker 2: people should remember back in my day. I like covering camp.
- 19:07Speaker 2: Or there's a new story every day. Hey today we're
- 19:09Speaker 2: talking about the tight ends. Hey today we're talking about
- 19:11Speaker 2: the tackles. Hey today we're talking about pass rush. To day,
- 19:13Speaker 2: we're talking about the corners. This guy popped, he gets
- 19:15Speaker 2: the headline. This guy sucked, he gets the headline. This
- 19:18Speaker 2: feels like it's going to be or it should be
- 19:20Speaker 2: that kind of camp. There will be some overarching storyline.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Certainly the Gonzales contract as long as that runs out.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I think Harold Landry, I think Will Campbell will be
- 19:28Speaker 2: a name that kind of runs throughout camp as a
- 19:31Speaker 2: a top headliner. But we're gonna be talking about different
- 19:35Speaker 2: things every day, which is really exciting to me because
- 19:38Speaker 2: the last couple of camps haven't really been that.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Yeah, i'd say another thing that I was thinking about
- 19:44Speaker 1: because I think about the Patriots and football too much. Yeah,
- 19:48Speaker 1: the last time that I had this type of expectation
- 19:51Speaker 1: going into a training camp, Tom Brady was still the
- 19:53Speaker 1: quarterback of this right exactly. I would say it's twenty nineteen, Yeah,
- 19:57Speaker 1: coming off of them winning a super Bowl.
- 19:58Speaker 2: Even twenty one when they went the playoffs, it was
- 20:00Speaker 2: not like this.
- 20:01Speaker 1: Not going into training camp, we had no idea that
- 20:03Speaker 1: that team was gonna win ten games.
- 20:04Speaker 2: No, I'm saying coming out of like going into twenty two,
- 20:07Speaker 2: you mean, yeah, yeah, I know this is as high
- 20:11Speaker 2: because even though they they got blown out in the
- 20:14Speaker 2: Super Bowl, they made it all the way to they
- 20:15Speaker 2: made it the Super Bowl.
- 20:16Speaker 1: The twenty one team got blown out in the Wild Card,
- 20:19Speaker 1: they even get off the bus.
- 20:20Speaker 2: They made it to the super Bowl. As a young
- 20:22Speaker 2: team and then added remember that twenty two offseason they
- 20:25Speaker 2: did nothing, so right, this feels like like again it's
- 20:28Speaker 2: going to be this is more of the kind of
- 20:30Speaker 2: not even that like covering just that I grew up
- 20:32Speaker 2: watching and following Oh yeah, sitting in the bleachers reading
- 20:35Speaker 2: my grease every day like that kind of thing. This
- 20:37Speaker 2: feels like it's going to be more like that kind
- 20:39Speaker 2: of camp.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Quick quick story, and then I'll get into my list.
- 20:43Speaker 1: I used to go to camp as a fan all
- 20:45Speaker 1: the time. I'm sure you did that every area. Go
- 20:47Speaker 1: back to Bryant a bunch of times. I go as
- 20:50Speaker 1: often as I could. In the summer, and I was
- 20:53Speaker 1: at a Patriots I wanted to say it was Patriots
- 20:56Speaker 1: Bucks joint practice, and.
- 20:59Speaker 2: I was sitting I think I know what you're gonna say.
- 21:01Speaker 1: The hill in the end zone.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Does this involve Adrian Claiborne.
- 21:05Speaker 1: I think it might. Okay, So I'm sitting on the hill,
- 21:08Speaker 1: uh in the end zone and Tom Brady goes down
- 21:14Speaker 1: in the pocket holding his knee.
- 21:16Speaker 2: Yeah, do you remember him?
- 21:17Speaker 1: Is it Adrian Clayborn? Was Adrian Clayborn legend? Somebody into
- 21:21Speaker 1: Brad He got knocked into Brady. But he fell like
- 21:23Speaker 1: right at his knee. Yeah, and he and Brady was
- 21:26Speaker 1: down yeah a minute, like it was. It was scary.
- 21:31Speaker 1: The whole You could hear a pin drop. The whole
- 21:33Speaker 1: place was like, oh God, here we go again. You know,
- 21:36Speaker 1: this was post a cl So we've seen him teraror
- 21:38Speaker 1: his acl before.
- 21:40Speaker 2: I'll tell you this was the summer of twenty fourteen. Yeah,
- 21:43Speaker 2: because I was finish your story and I'll say that.
- 21:46Speaker 1: That sounds that sounds right.
- 21:48Speaker 2: I know it's right.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Yeah, And I I remember just the whole time afterwards,
- 21:54Speaker 1: we're all just you know, looking at Twitter, look listening
- 21:58Speaker 1: in the radio, trying to figure out if he's okay.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And then I remember there was we were there for
- 22:03Speaker 1: lunch afterwards, we hung out Patriot Plays a little bit
- 22:05Speaker 1: and went to lunch, and there was a helicopter. Yeah,
- 22:09Speaker 1: that was circling is way before I thought about like
- 22:13Speaker 1: mister Craft's helicopter like that.
- 22:15Speaker 2: You thought they were med flighting.
- 22:16Speaker 1: I thought they were that they might have been med
- 22:18Speaker 1: fighting Brady out of out of the facility and we
- 22:22Speaker 1: were freaking out, freaking out. He was totally fine.
- 22:26Speaker 2: I had the year on. It was twenty thirteen. But
- 22:28Speaker 2: I remember I must have had my time. I mixed up.
- 22:31Speaker 2: I was interning for Felburn Maz at the time. I
- 22:34Speaker 2: worked on the TV side, and my job was basically
- 22:38Speaker 2: helped them get help the TV side get ready for
- 22:40Speaker 2: the show, like cut up all the b roll and
- 22:42Speaker 2: everything the videos that play. So I wouldn't stay for
- 22:44Speaker 2: the whole show because I'd get in around like eleven
- 22:46Speaker 2: o'clock and then i'd usually leave like an hour or
- 22:47Speaker 2: two in to the show. And I had just gotten
- 22:49Speaker 2: in the car and I'm driving home and I heard
- 22:52Speaker 2: them talking about it on the air. Yeah, I was
- 22:54Speaker 2: freaking out, and so I like, I pulled over. I
- 22:56Speaker 2: texted my boss. I'm like, do you need me to
- 22:57Speaker 2: come back? Like I was like, Oh, this is like
- 22:58Speaker 2: a major story. I'm gonna be a part of this.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Then he obviously was some but I remember getting home
- 23:02Speaker 2: like shaken up. My mom's like, what's wrong With'm like,
- 23:04Speaker 2: Tom Brady got hurt at practice. Yeah, She's like, you
- 23:05Speaker 2: need to relax. No, we don't understand.
- 23:07Speaker 1: No, you don't understand the other story I have like
- 23:10Speaker 1: that quickly. I was at the game that Gronk broke
- 23:13Speaker 1: his forearm on the extra point.
- 23:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:16Speaker 1: So that was a Keep to Leive's first game with
- 23:18Speaker 1: the Patriots. Yeah, And I was went with my family
- 23:21Speaker 1: and I had the whole pregame. Yeah, I'm telling them
- 23:24Speaker 1: how great a keep to Leave is, how excited I
- 23:26Speaker 1: am about this, and how awesome it's going to be.
- 23:28Speaker 1: A keep to Leave had a pick six in the game,
- 23:30Speaker 1: I think first game as a Patriot. They beat the Colts.
- 23:33Speaker 1: It was like fifty to ten. They blew out the
- 23:35Speaker 1: Andrew Luck Colts like they always did, and Gronk broke
- 23:39Speaker 1: his forearm blocking in the extra point and like late
- 23:43Speaker 1: in the fourth ard of the game. And I had
- 23:45Speaker 1: no idea what happened because we were there at the
- 23:48Speaker 1: game and it wasn't like one of those injuries where
- 23:50Speaker 1: he went down in a heap or anything like that.
- 23:54Speaker 1: And so we're driving home from the game. We turn
- 23:56Speaker 1: on probably your station to listen to the postgame show,
- 23:59Speaker 1: and they're talking about Gronk getting hurt, and I'm like, what.
- 24:02Speaker 2: Are you talking to a training camp? I just was interested, no,
- 24:07Speaker 2: because I had other good I was. I remember it
- 24:09Speaker 2: has nothing to do training camp stories. I remember I
- 24:13Speaker 2: remember being a training camp. My dad and we would
- 24:14Speaker 2: go like two or three days a year usually, and
- 24:18Speaker 2: especially like once I was older and I like had
- 24:19Speaker 2: summer jobs and stuff. Whatever day it was, Malcolm Butler
- 24:23Speaker 2: went nuts. Malcolm Butler, U dfa nobody, and I remember
- 24:27Speaker 2: walking out the whole time, going Malcolm Butler. They found somebody,
- 24:30Speaker 2: Malcolm Butler. I remember going back to college and telling
- 24:31Speaker 2: all my friends were Patriots fans, you got to look
- 24:33Speaker 2: out for this guy, Malcolm Butler this year. Malcolm Butler.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I saw him in camp. He's the guy and all that,
- 24:38Speaker 2: and then he made the team and then ultimately what happened.
- 24:40Speaker 2: I was so glad I went that day. I'm sure
- 24:43Speaker 2: he had a great camp the rest of the camp,
- 24:45Speaker 2: but whatever that day was, he had like two picks. Yeah,
- 24:48Speaker 2: that was fun to your story. That reminded me. I
- 24:50Speaker 2: was at the game. It was the last game I
- 24:52Speaker 2: attended in person before I started covering the team. Was
- 24:58Speaker 2: when Brady was suspended and Jimmy Garoppolo started against the
- 25:01Speaker 2: Dolphins YEP and hurt his shoulder, and then Brisett got
- 25:05Speaker 2: banged up, and I remember the whole ride home we
- 25:07Speaker 2: were coming up with who is the most ridiculous court
- 25:09Speaker 2: because we all thought patri are gonna have to sign
- 25:11Speaker 2: a quarterback, right. We didn't think they're gonna go into
- 25:13Speaker 2: games with one quarterback, with just a rookie and Jacoby
- 25:16Speaker 2: Brissette and I remember we were like, who's the most
- 25:18Speaker 2: ridiculous quarterback the Patriots could sign. I think Peyton had
- 25:20Speaker 2: just retired. I think we were talking about them having
- 25:22Speaker 2: Peyton Manning come back for a game or something like that.
- 25:24Speaker 2: But at the end, Jakobe got the job done. Shout
- 25:26Speaker 2: out to him. The Cardinals should pay him.
- 25:28Speaker 1: By the way, last training camp story, because my grong
- 25:31Speaker 1: story wasn't a training camp story. That was such a
- 25:33Speaker 1: vivid memory for me with him getting hurt. Last one
- 25:37Speaker 1: I went to training camp was me, my sister, and
- 25:40Speaker 1: my cousin and uh, we were young at this time.
- 25:43Speaker 1: This is not an adult asking for an autography. This
- 25:45Speaker 1: was I was the right age to be looking for
- 25:48Speaker 1: the autographs.
- 25:49Speaker 2: This was two years ago.
- 25:50Speaker 1: You're a waiting, right, We were waiting for autographs after
- 25:54Speaker 1: and uh, a former Patriots linebacker came up and signed
- 25:59Speaker 1: a jersey and we have a picture with him. Who
- 26:01Speaker 1: do you think Rabel? Very Mike Rabel. So that was
- 26:05Speaker 1: pretty cool. I don't know if i've told him that
- 26:07Speaker 1: before I doubt he would care.
- 26:09Speaker 2: My h one more training camp Ball is a former
- 26:11Speaker 2: Patriots linebacker. I remember being in a practice and some
- 26:15Speaker 2: some guy they had signed. He bounced around a couple
- 26:18Speaker 2: of teams like it was pretty clearly it looked like
- 26:20Speaker 2: he was gonna be his last go at it. And
- 26:23Speaker 2: so he's going full motor right because he's trying to
- 26:25Speaker 2: make this team, and he bumps into Brady and it
- 26:28Speaker 2: was a little late, and Bill got mad at him,
- 26:31Speaker 2: and I remember my dad going, that guy is not
- 26:33Speaker 2: going to make the team. It was Rob Ninkovic.
- 26:37Speaker 1: All right enough, memory Lane, Yeah, all right, let's actually
- 26:40Speaker 1: do let's actually do this. Let's let's actually do the
- 26:43Speaker 1: list that I keep teasing that we're gonna do. All right, so, uh,
- 26:46Speaker 1: position by position, start with quarterback. Yeah, So I I
- 26:50Speaker 1: just wrote down May and McDaniels. I just feel like
- 26:53Speaker 1: we can talk about and we'll get into some of
- 26:56Speaker 1: the under the hood details here of what I more
- 26:59Speaker 1: mean by this. But I do really feel like they
- 27:02Speaker 1: were scratching the surface year one of what the birth
- 27:05Speaker 1: of the playbook, you know, the depth of the playbook.
- 27:08Speaker 1: And I did feel like at times and I brought
- 27:10Speaker 1: this up on the show before. I did feel like
- 27:12Speaker 1: at times in the playoffs, I was starting to see
- 27:14Speaker 1: a lot of repeat plays, a lot of the same
- 27:17Speaker 1: route combinations and concepts. Maybe they were getting to them
- 27:20Speaker 1: in different formations or with different tweaks, but it was
- 27:23Speaker 1: a lot of the same things. Like I remember vividly
- 27:27Speaker 1: against the Texans in that playoff game, them just running
- 27:30Speaker 1: nine to eight nine two go routes on the outside
- 27:33Speaker 1: with like a post in the middle of the field,
- 27:35Speaker 1: just over and over again, and they finally hit Kisehan
- 27:38Speaker 1: Boody on the touchdown on that concept. In the Super Bowl,
- 27:42Speaker 1: it was dagger, you know, the seam clearing out for
- 27:45Speaker 1: the big incut. They finally hit MATC. Collins on one
- 27:48Speaker 1: of those incuts on the one touchdown drive they put together.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I think that there's just a lot more, you know,
- 27:55Speaker 1: to use an analogy. Right now, they have like a
- 27:59Speaker 1: fixed menu. Last year, they had like a fixed menu
- 28:02Speaker 1: of place. I want the cheesecake factory this year, right like,
- 28:05Speaker 1: I want everything to be available to them because I
- 28:09Speaker 1: think that that's what they're going to have to do,
- 28:10Speaker 1: because there's gonna be blueprints against Drake May all the
- 28:13Speaker 1: Patriots opponents for this year, especially their divisional opponents, are
- 28:17Speaker 1: going to have watched the May McDaniels offense all off
- 28:20Speaker 1: season to make sure that they know what the Patriots
- 28:22Speaker 1: are doing this time around. You're not going to catch
- 28:25Speaker 1: anybody by surprise. Drake May is now the runner up
- 28:27Speaker 1: for MVP and took his team to the Super Bowl.
- 28:30Speaker 1: You have to keep evolving, you have to keep adding
- 28:33Speaker 1: because the teams are going to look at Seattle, They're
- 28:35Speaker 1: going to look at what the Texans and the Broncos
- 28:37Speaker 1: did and they're going to try to replicate that and
- 28:40Speaker 1: maybe they're gonna have the talent to do it as
- 28:42Speaker 1: good as those teams did. But the blueprints out. So
- 28:45Speaker 1: it's a combination of, Okay, what was the blueprint, which
- 28:49Speaker 1: we can get into, and then also how do we expand?
- 28:53Speaker 1: And I think Drake May in year two, there's a
- 28:55Speaker 1: variety of ways, not only just con conceptually with different
- 28:58Speaker 1: combinations and things like that, but tempo and different personnel
- 29:02Speaker 1: groupings and different you know, under center combinations and drop
- 29:06Speaker 1: back combinations and things like that that I hope are
- 29:09Speaker 1: going to be. I hope the world is his oyster
- 29:11Speaker 1: this year. And there's more open, you know, playbook freedom,
- 29:16Speaker 1: both for him at the line of scrimmage, but also
- 29:18Speaker 1: just from them calling it as well, because I think
- 29:20Speaker 1: last year towards the end part of the struggles not
- 29:24Speaker 1: probably not the biggest reason that the offense struggled in
- 29:26Speaker 1: the playoffs, but a reason was that at that point
- 29:30Speaker 1: everybody had a kind of a beat on what they
- 29:32Speaker 1: were doing.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Right, So along those lines, I think for me, it's
- 29:35Speaker 2: really the pre snap stuff. Yeah, and they talked in
- 29:38Speaker 2: the spring about wanting to weaponize the mental side of
- 29:40Speaker 2: Drake May's game. And you know, when we were debating
- 29:44Speaker 2: offensive coordinator last year, a lot of people are like, no,
- 29:46Speaker 2: you can't hire McDaniels. The offense is to advance. It's
- 29:48Speaker 2: too much to put on them. And I think that
- 29:49Speaker 2: was unfair to McDaniels because McDaniels is smart and eased
- 29:53Speaker 2: them in and they did the basic you know. And
- 29:56Speaker 2: when I say basic, it's still pretty complex, but the
- 29:59Speaker 2: year one version of the McDaniels offense. But now you
- 30:02Speaker 2: start building on it. And I do think the most
- 30:04Speaker 2: logical step is giving him more agency, more power at
- 30:08Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage, to make checks, to change plays,
- 30:10Speaker 2: to things like that. I think last year there were
- 30:12Speaker 2: times where they just had to run plays into bad
- 30:14Speaker 2: looks because that's the way it was installed. Let's also
- 30:17Speaker 2: not forget this is the first time Drake May has
- 30:20Speaker 2: had the same offense coordinator back to back years since
- 30:22Speaker 2: high school, so he doesn't have to relearn the whole
- 30:25Speaker 2: playbook and he can kind of dive deeper into it.
- 30:27Speaker 2: So definitely, I mean, expanding the playbook as a whole
- 30:31Speaker 2: is part of it, and I think you do that
- 30:33Speaker 2: one way or the other. I personally am really fascinated
- 30:36Speaker 2: and this is probably something that shows up more later
- 30:37Speaker 2: in camp and joint practices and in preseason games. I'm
- 30:41Speaker 2: fascinated on the pre snap especially, And do we see
- 30:45Speaker 2: May more involved, more communative at the line of scrimmage.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Does Josh McDaniels give him more power in that regard?
- 30:53Speaker 2: That's the biggest thing for me with him this year.
- 30:55Speaker 1: Yeah. So along those lines, some of the stats that
- 30:57Speaker 1: I had looked up for the Quarterback Positional Review that
- 31:00Speaker 1: I wrote on it that's on Patriots dot Com. Last year,
- 31:04Speaker 1: time in between plays or time per play. Yeah, the
- 31:07Speaker 1: Patriots were twenty eighth in the league in.
- 31:09Speaker 2: Time in terms of slowest.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Yes, so they took twenty eight point six seconds to
- 31:15Speaker 1: run a play last year. That was twenty eighth in
- 31:18Speaker 1: the NFL or whatever fifth slowest, right, So some of
- 31:22Speaker 1: that is a you know, by design, because they shift
- 31:25Speaker 1: a lot, they use motion, they change out personnel groupings,
- 31:29Speaker 1: all those different types of things. I think another part
- 31:32Speaker 1: of it though, was that you know, the old like
- 31:35Speaker 1: the earpiece doesn't shut off until fifteen seconds ago on
- 31:39Speaker 1: the playclock. I think that there was a lot of
- 31:42Speaker 1: Josh McDaniel's handholding going on. Not to say that that's
- 31:46Speaker 1: necessarily a bad thing, but in year two in the system,
- 31:50Speaker 1: year three in the NFL with Drake May, you would
- 31:53Speaker 1: like to think that some of that stuff would not
- 31:55Speaker 1: be as necessary as maybe it was at times last year.
- 31:58Speaker 1: So I think getting out of the huddle, faster, running
- 32:03Speaker 1: plays faster, being faster at the line of scrimmage. I
- 32:08Speaker 1: think those things can really help keep a defense off balance,
- 32:11Speaker 1: like when you can hit them with tempo, when you
- 32:13Speaker 1: can hit them with pace, when you can keep them
- 32:15Speaker 1: in the same personnel groupings, when you can make it
- 32:19Speaker 1: so that their checks and their calls that they have
- 32:22Speaker 1: to make are happening quickly. Those when mistakes can happen
- 32:25Speaker 1: defensively and you don't just kind of let the defense
- 32:28Speaker 1: sit there and wait for you to run your play.
- 32:31Speaker 1: I think that a lot of that can be helpful.
- 32:34Speaker 1: We're seeing these numbers kind of go back and forth
- 32:36Speaker 1: the league wide. The introduction of motion, especially motion before
- 32:42Speaker 1: the snap, has made teams take longer and longer because
- 32:45Speaker 1: if you're motioning, it takes time, right, So that's why
- 32:48Speaker 1: these players get bogged down at times. But I think
- 32:51Speaker 1: that the issue that teams are having with that is
- 32:54Speaker 1: that it allows defenses to really get into some exotic
- 32:57Speaker 1: stuff because they have all this time in the world.
- 32:59Speaker 1: They got thirty second right to sit there and make
- 33:01Speaker 1: calls and make checks and change personnel and all this
- 33:04Speaker 1: different type of stuff. If you go fast, they kind
- 33:07Speaker 1: of just have to play vanilla defense. Like you can't
- 33:10Speaker 1: like all of a sudden run this crazy stimulated pressure
- 33:13Speaker 1: at a quarterback when you have like ten seconds to
- 33:16Speaker 1: make a call, right, Like, that's not going to happen.
- 33:18Speaker 1: So I think some of these things that we saw
- 33:20Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl that cover zeros and things like
- 33:22Speaker 1: that that Seattle did against them, maybe they can mitigate
- 33:26Speaker 1: some of that by going faster and kind of getting
- 33:28Speaker 1: defenses to just be stagnant and sitting there in whatever
- 33:31Speaker 1: personnel they're in.
- 33:32Speaker 2: And I think that's just for a number of reasons.
- 33:36Speaker 2: I think running more plays this year would benefit them.
- 33:39Speaker 2: So last year, among teams that were top ten in scoring,
- 33:44Speaker 2: the Patriots rank eighth and total plays run, Yeah, and
- 33:49Speaker 2: I think they can. You know, as you talk about
- 33:51Speaker 2: where they are more opportunities for growth, it's not necessarily
- 33:53Speaker 2: players playing better. It's just I mean that's obvious some
- 33:56Speaker 2: of it. But it's getting more plays in. And when
- 33:58Speaker 2: you bring in both Aj Brown and Romeo Dobbs and
- 34:00Speaker 2: you still want to keep running the ball. I kept
- 34:03Speaker 2: giving that stat when we talked about them potentially bringing
- 34:05Speaker 2: back digs right about well, Mass and Welker both had
- 34:08Speaker 2: more than one hundred and forty targets in a season,
- 34:10Speaker 2: and they were top ten in rushing attempts because they
- 34:13Speaker 2: ran a ton of plays. And I just think that's
- 34:17Speaker 2: something that can enhance this McDaniel's offense if they can
- 34:20Speaker 2: get that pace up. They ran, you know, one forty
- 34:25Speaker 2: four plays last year that was like eighty behind the
- 34:28Speaker 2: league high, which is the Dallas Cowboys. They ran eleven
- 34:32Speaker 2: hundred twenty.
- 34:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:33Speaker 2: So, and I remember somebody, you know, talking about having
- 34:38Speaker 2: this conversation with somebody on the radio called in about
- 34:40Speaker 2: Drake May improving, and you know, where is there more
- 34:43Speaker 2: ceiling for him to just have more production? He only
- 34:46Speaker 2: threw four hundred ninety two passes last year. A lot
- 34:48Speaker 2: of these guys are well into the five hundreds. If
- 34:50Speaker 2: you want him to get to you know, even five
- 34:52Speaker 2: fifteen to five twenty, which is going to put among
- 34:54Speaker 2: the league leaders. That's only like five extra passes per game.
- 34:58Speaker 2: Can they fit in five to ten more plays per
- 35:00Speaker 2: game to keep that balance with the run? I think
- 35:02Speaker 2: is doable and I think would be beneficial.
- 35:04Speaker 1: Yeah, so running plays faster, running more plays, and then
- 35:09Speaker 1: the blueprint, you know, having answers against Cover six, which
- 35:12Speaker 1: was obviously the big like it coverage during Super Bowl
- 35:15Speaker 1: Week that everybody was talking about. I think Seattle took
- 35:18Speaker 1: down their protections a little bit with some of their
- 35:20Speaker 1: blitzes as well. You know, those are things that again
- 35:23Speaker 1: I don't know if everybody is going to be able
- 35:25Speaker 1: to replicate it at the level that Seattle can do it.
- 35:28Speaker 1: But Seattle, Pittsburgh, Jacksonville Buffalo, all the teams the Patriots
- 35:35Speaker 1: are going to play out of the gate this season.
- 35:37Speaker 1: In September, they're all going to look back at the
- 35:39Speaker 1: Super Bowl right and say, well, what did Seattle do
- 35:42Speaker 1: in the Super Bowl? So that that I think is
- 35:44Speaker 1: a big thing. Let's move on, though, because I don't
- 35:46Speaker 1: want to take an hour talking about that, which we
- 35:49Speaker 1: probably could. The running back position, no doubt that the
- 35:53Speaker 1: third running back job is up for grabs and is
- 35:56Speaker 1: a top camp battle this summer. Yeah, but I actually
- 35:58Speaker 1: wanted to focus a little bit more on Treva Henderson specifically.
- 36:01Speaker 1: I just I would really like to see Travion Henderson
- 36:05Speaker 1: make that year two leave. I think that it's in
- 36:08Speaker 1: there for him. But the question that I wanted to
- 36:11Speaker 1: present was what does that exactly look like?
- 36:15Speaker 2: Like? Is it?
- 36:15Speaker 1: Because to me, the year two lead for Traveon Henderson
- 36:18Speaker 1: is being more of a factor in the passing game.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I don't think it's literally, Yeah, I don't think it's necessarily.
- 36:23Speaker 1: I know we talk a lot about his efficiency between
- 36:26Speaker 1: the tackles and having better vision between the tackles and
- 36:29Speaker 1: things like that. I don't know. I think his run
- 36:33Speaker 1: style is always going to be boom or bust. I
- 36:35Speaker 1: think he's going to be a home run hitter.
- 36:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he needs to be a little more consistent.
- 36:38Speaker 1: He definitely can be, but I'm not expecting him to
- 36:40Speaker 1: like all of a sudden be like Le'Veon Bell and
- 36:43Speaker 1: just like have great patience and vision right between the tackles.
- 36:46Speaker 1: The area where I really think that he can improve
- 36:48Speaker 1: a lot is in the passing game. And it's funny
- 36:50Speaker 1: because when we're out there, you know, at practice, Alex,
- 36:53Speaker 1: whether it's in the spring or last summer or whatever,
- 36:55Speaker 1: you see it in practice, Like he'll run a wheel
- 36:57Speaker 1: route on a linebacker and we see it flash in
- 36:59Speaker 1: practic this. But he's got to be more consistent in
- 37:02Speaker 1: pass protection. I'm sure there are details as a receiver
- 37:05Speaker 1: that he needs to be more consistent with. Uh, screen back,
- 37:08Speaker 1: I think he could be a really effective screen back
- 37:10Speaker 1: and he was at Ohio State. Those are the elements
- 37:13Speaker 1: that I want to see Travon Henderson take it to
- 37:16Speaker 1: the next level that would make him you know, we
- 37:18Speaker 1: always use that like ceiling comp of Jamiir Gibbs, right.
- 37:21Speaker 1: The reason why Jamiir Gibbs is so great is partially
- 37:24Speaker 1: because of how good he is as a receiver out
- 37:26Speaker 1: of the backfield as well, if you want him to
- 37:28Speaker 1: be closer to Jamiir Gibbs style player, I think that
- 37:31Speaker 1: that's where we're missing. Even if you want to set
- 37:33Speaker 1: the bar a little bit lower at like Davon a
- 37:36Speaker 1: Chan or Breisee Hall or something like that, those guys
- 37:38Speaker 1: are all really good players in the passing game team And.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Look, he's good as a receiver, but the reality is
- 37:43Speaker 2: in this offense, you can't get on the field in
- 37:45Speaker 2: those situations unless you can block. Yeah, even if you
- 37:48Speaker 2: want to say we'll just put him on the field
- 37:49Speaker 2: and only call play where the running back goes into
- 37:51Speaker 2: the pattern, what if you have to change the play?
- 37:53Speaker 2: What if he suddenly has to pick up linebacker in
- 37:56Speaker 2: you know, in pass pro where the play's not going
- 37:58Speaker 2: to work, like you can't. He has to have that
- 38:00Speaker 2: trust from from McDaniels and from May to an extent.
- 38:03Speaker 2: So that's one that again we won't known till the
- 38:07Speaker 2: pads come on, We won't know it till the preseason games,
- 38:09Speaker 2: all of that. But that's really where I could he
- 38:12Speaker 2: be better as a receiver. Yes, I think he's perfectly
- 38:15Speaker 2: capable as a receiver. I think he's a plus as
- 38:17Speaker 2: a receiver, but it's not gonna matter if he can't
- 38:20Speaker 2: pass block.
- 38:21Speaker 1: Yeah, no, that's definitely true. So Travion, I would say
- 38:27Speaker 1: pass blocking is number one because he's got to be
- 38:30Speaker 1: able to stay on the field, right. I think that
- 38:32Speaker 1: there's probably details as a receiver. Like I said, screen game,
- 38:35Speaker 1: I think he could be a little bit more patient.
- 38:37Speaker 1: He's so fast that I think it's hard sometimes, like
- 38:40Speaker 1: you really got allow the offensive lineman to do the
- 38:42Speaker 1: dirty work in the screen game once you get into
- 38:44Speaker 1: the open field. Obviously.
- 38:45Speaker 2: I mean there's the one against Texas, and I forget
- 38:47Speaker 2: if it was the national championship.
- 38:49Speaker 1: At a summer college football playoff for sure.
- 38:51Speaker 2: Right, just unbelievable patients, vision, all of that, and so
- 38:54Speaker 2: he can do it, he just has to do it
- 38:56Speaker 2: more consistently.
- 38:57Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh really quickly, who's your current pick for RB three?
- 39:02Speaker 2: Uh? Laris in? But that's very much I'm just going
- 39:05Speaker 2: off of he looked like the guy in the spring,
- 39:07Speaker 2: but that's obviously subject to change.
- 39:09Speaker 1: I'll keep my my property on land Larrison Island.
- 39:12Speaker 2: You forgot him earlier.
- 39:13Speaker 1: That was terrible. How could I do that? I was
- 39:15Speaker 1: thinking the rookies.
- 39:16Speaker 2: I think that's what it was as Can we not
- 39:18Speaker 2: do the island thing?
- 39:19Speaker 3: Did?
- 39:19Speaker 2: Land laris and bandwagon?
- 39:20Speaker 1: No, that's an islands.
- 39:22Speaker 2: It's only for corners. I don't know. I got how
- 39:24Speaker 2: many times you have to explain this. I got beachfront
- 39:25Speaker 2: property right on the island. But that's not how.
- 39:29Speaker 1: You can Okay, well you can live in the poolhouse
- 39:31Speaker 1: if you want them, because you don't.
- 39:33Speaker 2: You know, I'm I'm on the land layers and bandwi.
- 39:35Speaker 1: You don't believe in it.
- 39:36Speaker 2: So no, I don't the house because you don't believe.
- 39:39Speaker 2: That's already a term we use in football. Island like
- 39:41Speaker 2: you can't just suddenly say it means something different.
- 39:45Speaker 7: Can you explain the island again?
- 39:48Speaker 2: Land laris and island?
- 39:49Speaker 8: Is that you're.
- 39:51Speaker 9: No?
- 39:52Speaker 2: No, no, I.
- 39:52Speaker 6: Understand, But what do you mean alex By Island? Why
- 39:54Speaker 6: can't revis island different? Yes, Gonzo Island that kind of thing. No,
- 40:02Speaker 6: that's what I think of when I.
- 40:03Speaker 2: Hear the island the island last year weis He's a receiver.
- 40:07Speaker 2: It's the exact opposite of that.
- 40:08Speaker 1: I have property on the island. I have a very big,
- 40:12Speaker 1: nice beach front property. Exactly you know, the dream house
- 40:16Speaker 1: right on the island with land Larrison. I'm like the
- 40:19Speaker 1: mayor of that thing.
- 40:20Speaker 2: I I just think the terminology is confusing.
- 40:23Speaker 1: Okay, moving on to the wide receivers. The guy I
- 40:27Speaker 1: wrote down with the wide receivers is kind of a
- 40:29Speaker 1: similar thing, not exactly with Trevon, but another year two guy,
- 40:33Speaker 1: Kyle Williams. I just feel like Kyle Williams. The idea
- 40:37Speaker 1: of Kyle Williams is so intriguing if he can figure
- 40:41Speaker 1: it out and he can put it all together, because
- 40:43Speaker 1: they really don't have anybody else like him on the roster.
- 40:46Speaker 1: You know, the only other speed guy, true speed guy
- 40:49Speaker 1: at wide receiver that they have is Pop. But Pop's
- 40:51Speaker 1: five foot eight, right, so at least Kyle Williams is
- 40:54Speaker 1: five to ten plus has a little bit of size
- 40:57Speaker 1: to him. I just really like the idea of you're
- 41:01Speaker 1: gonna be very Brown and Dobs heavy. We know that,
- 41:03Speaker 1: and there's nothing wrong with that. They're both good players.
- 41:05Speaker 1: AJ Brown's an excellent player, but to get that infusion
- 41:09Speaker 1: of speed down the field explosiveness, but I would also
- 41:13Speaker 1: say to maybe allow Brown and Dobbs to play inside
- 41:16Speaker 1: the formation a little bit more. Having a guy that
- 41:19Speaker 1: can play outside and bring speed all at the same time. Again,
- 41:23Speaker 1: the idea of Kyle Williams is very intriguing, but right
- 41:26Speaker 1: now he's just a concept of a plan. He's just
- 41:28Speaker 1: an idea, like he's going to have to put it
- 41:31Speaker 1: all together. You know, I'm a sucker for these types
- 41:33Speaker 1: of guys too, So I'm gonna try my best not
- 41:35Speaker 1: to go crazy when he catches a long pass and
- 41:39Speaker 1: you know, shorts and shells this summer. But the idea
- 41:43Speaker 1: of Kyle Williams coming to fruition, I feel like would
- 41:46Speaker 1: be really really big for this team if he can
- 41:47Speaker 1: put it together.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so I didn't have him as my number one
- 41:51Speaker 2: wide receiver. Story, I have him on the you know,
- 41:53Speaker 2: under the radar guys that are in the spot like
- 41:55Speaker 2: top one hundred pick last year showed a couple of
- 41:58Speaker 2: flashes that you hope he can build on. Ironically, even
- 42:01Speaker 2: though they added aj Brown and Romeo Dobbs, he might
- 42:04Speaker 2: be less buried in this camp than he was last
- 42:06Speaker 2: year because last year was a rookie and remember they
- 42:08Speaker 2: still had Ketrick Bournan here. We're trying to make it
- 42:11Speaker 2: work with him. Jayvon Baker was still in the mix
- 42:15Speaker 2: at this time last year, you know, there were a
- 42:18Speaker 2: handful of guys, so especially if if they move on
- 42:20Speaker 2: from Booty or Booty's limited, Like he's going to be
- 42:23Speaker 2: the backup, the third X behind AJ Brown and mc collins.
- 42:26Speaker 2: So he's not gonna get a ton of reps, but
- 42:27Speaker 2: I think there's a chance he gets more, especially first
- 42:29Speaker 2: team reps. I think there's a chance that Ky Wiams
- 42:31Speaker 2: gets more first team reps this year than he did
- 42:33Speaker 2: last year. And you just hope to see him build
- 42:35Speaker 2: on that, because again, he is intriguing. I still believe.
- 42:38Speaker 2: I don't know, especially as this offense is constituted right now,
- 42:40Speaker 2: that he is a volume player. My line on Ky
- 42:44Speaker 2: Williams always been he's probably only gonna catch two or
- 42:45Speaker 2: three passes a game, But is it two for fifteen
- 42:48Speaker 2: or two for ninety And that's what you're looking at
- 42:50Speaker 2: with Ki Williams, and you want to consistently be more
- 42:52Speaker 2: in the ninety. My big story wide receiver Drake May's
- 42:56Speaker 2: chemistry with the newest and longest tenured receivers on this team,
- 42:59Speaker 2: AJ Brown Douglas. Obviously, the AJ Brown thing got here
- 43:02Speaker 2: a little late, right they're kind of playing catch up
- 43:04Speaker 2: looked great in Mini camp, but how does that continue
- 43:06Speaker 2: to build? Every ball from Drake Made it a j
- 43:09Speaker 2: Brown is going to get a response in this camp. Sure,
- 43:11Speaker 2: and then Pop Douglas. Okay, we we acknowledge.
- 43:15Speaker 1: You have front property on Pop Douglas.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Well, we acknowledged, and I'm not doing the island thing.
- 43:20Speaker 2: We acknowledged in the spring that he's done this before
- 43:23Speaker 2: and we need to see when the pads come on, right?
- 43:26Speaker 2: All that sure? So this isn't me saying, hey, Pop
- 43:29Speaker 2: Douglas is legit, this is his breakout year. Can I
- 43:33Speaker 2: acknowledge that what we saw between Drake and Pop this
- 43:36Speaker 2: spring looked different than last year? I think the chemistry
- 43:39Speaker 2: between the two, yes, because it wasn't just Pop Douglas
- 43:42Speaker 2: individually getting open. We had heard you know, it's been
- 43:44Speaker 2: toograph for a while. Drake Made doesn't like throwing the
- 43:46Speaker 2: shorter receivers. It feels like him and Pop maybe put
- 43:49Speaker 2: some work in. I am intrigued to see how that
- 43:52Speaker 2: plays out. That is not me saying it is going
- 43:54Speaker 2: to work, but I am interested in that because I
- 43:56Speaker 2: will still say if they can get on the same
- 44:00Speaker 2: page and if Pop Douglas's usage is right, which I
- 44:03Speaker 2: don't think it's always been during his time in New England.
- 44:06Speaker 2: He can be a playmaker if they can can get
- 44:10Speaker 2: the stars to align, and I acknowledge that at this
- 44:13Speaker 2: point in year four. Maybe I'm grasping its straws, but
- 44:15Speaker 2: I still think there is legit upside there. I'm interested
- 44:19Speaker 2: to see if they tap into it. That is still
- 44:21Speaker 2: the story to me, So not doing your Taekwon Thornton
- 44:24Speaker 2: things on the island, I'm interested. I'm interested in seeing
- 44:29Speaker 2: what happens. So the spring did feel a little different
- 44:31Speaker 2: for Pop in the last few years.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Okay, So I don't know about that because I remember
- 44:35Speaker 1: after training camp last year I wrote a whole thing
- 44:38Speaker 1: about Pop and Chisholm and the slot receiver and all
- 44:42Speaker 1: this kind of stuff. So so I think we had
- 44:43Speaker 1: a lot of buzz about it.
- 44:44Speaker 2: But here's what's different. You just wrote about and your
- 44:49Speaker 2: observation was, and correct me if I'm wrong. Pop Douglas
- 44:52Speaker 2: individually looked good. He was getting open, he was doing
- 44:54Speaker 2: things individually well. I thought this spring it was more
- 44:57Speaker 2: about him and May being on the same page to
- 45:00Speaker 2: a level that they hadn't been. That's what's different. It's
- 45:03Speaker 2: not that Pop Douglas individually did anything different. It's that
- 45:06Speaker 2: after this whole narrative that May couldn't get on the
- 45:10Speaker 2: same page of shorter of receivers. I thought they kind
- 45:12Speaker 2: of were. It May look to him early and off
- 45:14Speaker 2: in the spring. He was Drake May's most targeted receiver
- 45:16Speaker 2: this spring. That's not nothing. So that's what I'm more
- 45:18Speaker 2: interested in is where is May at in regards to
- 45:21Speaker 2: Douglas than just Douglas's individual talent level right now?
- 45:25Speaker 1: Fair enough, So, just to wrap up this point because
- 45:27Speaker 1: I think they're both related and sort of not related,
- 45:30Speaker 1: Kyle Williams and Pop Douglas are the two speed guys
- 45:33Speaker 1: in this offense. They are the two guys that can
- 45:35Speaker 1: really being an infusion of you know, four to four
- 45:38Speaker 1: kind of speed, right, and they're do it differently. And
- 45:41Speaker 1: you know, Pop is it primarily not primarily a full
- 45:44Speaker 1: time slot receiver. He's going to be in the slot
- 45:46Speaker 1: all the time. Kyle Williams can play outside and inside.
- 45:50Speaker 1: I think that's the big question that I have. If
- 45:52Speaker 1: you're Brown and Dobbs booty, or you're Brown Dobbs Hollands heavy,
- 45:57Speaker 1: I still feel like you're a little bit slow, offensively,
- 46:00Speaker 1: and I feel like you lack a true burner in
- 46:03Speaker 1: that group, the two burners that have the chance to
- 46:06Speaker 1: kind of break in there. Because I got the question
- 46:08Speaker 1: on Twitter of like, well, how much opportunity is the
- 46:11Speaker 1: guy like Kyle Williams going to have. I feel like
- 46:13Speaker 1: you're a little bit redundant if you're Brown Dobbs Booty
- 46:18Speaker 1: or Brown Dobbs Hollins. It's similar skill sets across the board.
- 46:23Speaker 1: One of those guys is going to end up bringing
- 46:25Speaker 1: that element of energy. Whether it's Popp or it's Kyle Williams.
- 46:29Speaker 1: I don't know which one is going to end up
- 46:31Speaker 1: winning that sort of role, but one of those guys
- 46:34Speaker 1: is going to do that. Maybe they do it a
- 46:35Speaker 1: little bit differently, but that's the big question. Three receiver
- 46:39Speaker 1: set with Brown Dobbs Williams or Brown Dobbs Pop right
- 46:45Speaker 1: on paper, feels really exciting to me. But Pop and
- 46:49Speaker 1: Kyle Williams have to hold up their end of the bargain.
- 46:51Speaker 1: And I guess that's what we'll find out is if
- 46:54Speaker 1: either one of those guys can hold up there end
- 46:55Speaker 1: of the bargain. Let's move on to the tight ends.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Biggest question to me One of the biggest questions I
- 47:01Speaker 1: would say on the entire team is the readiness of
- 47:05Speaker 1: Eli Riden, Like is he ready? Is he ready to
- 47:08Speaker 1: be a true tight end two to Hunter Henry right
- 47:11Speaker 1: out of the shoot? I think it's a big question
- 47:13Speaker 1: mark with this team right now. If he's not, then
- 47:17Speaker 1: they need to go make a John Who's Smith's signing
- 47:19Speaker 1: or something along those lines, and make a move at
- 47:21Speaker 1: that spot, not just for a body, but for somebody
- 47:24Speaker 1: that actually has some cachet and is a veteran in
- 47:27Speaker 1: this league. I don't know if it's necessarily too much
- 47:31Speaker 1: to ask of Eli Rariden, but it's a lot of
- 47:33Speaker 1: to ask from a rookie to come in and play
- 47:35Speaker 1: forty forty five percent of the snaps right out of
- 47:38Speaker 1: the shoot in year one. But that's going to be
- 47:40Speaker 1: in number one storyline I think at that position, is
- 47:44Speaker 1: is Eli Raiden ready to be a backup to Hunter Henry?
- 47:46Speaker 1: And if Hunter Henry gets hurt, is he ready to
- 47:49Speaker 1: maybe start some games as a rookie? I think that's
- 47:52Speaker 1: that's a big question. That's a big question mark.
- 47:54Speaker 2: Yeah, And I mean I think you just hit on
- 47:56Speaker 2: all the big points, like they could use him he'd
- 47:58Speaker 2: be a big booster team. He doesn't need to be
- 47:59Speaker 2: the starting tight end, but if he can be that
- 48:01Speaker 2: second guy and be capable blocker and catch some passes
- 48:04Speaker 2: and help stretch the field opposite a Hunter Henry, that's
- 48:07Speaker 2: what they were looking for last year that you know,
- 48:09Speaker 2: would be an improvement on Austin Hooper. So seemed kind
- 48:12Speaker 2: of buried in the spring. Now that's happened, and then guys'
- 48:15Speaker 2: rookies come back out, like specifically as rookies, right, we
- 48:18Speaker 2: don't see much in the spring. They come back out
- 48:19Speaker 2: in the summer and they're caught up and they're where
- 48:21Speaker 2: they need to be. The fact that like Arkin was
- 48:23Speaker 2: ahead of him was a fellow rookie was interesting. So
- 48:26Speaker 2: it'll be fascinating to see kind of what they do
- 48:28Speaker 2: with rare and as things get started.
- 48:30Speaker 1: Yep, it's a big position of need I think moving forward.
- 48:35Speaker 1: You drafted one this year, but it wasn't until late
- 48:37Speaker 1: in the third round. It's not a huge investment. It's
- 48:40Speaker 1: a middle investment, but not a huge investment assets wise,
- 48:43Speaker 1: So we'll see what happens there. Offensive line. The thing
- 48:46Speaker 1: I wrote down with the offensive line there bet this
- 48:50Speaker 1: offseason kind of feels like this reshuffling on the left side,
- 48:54Speaker 1: you know, Vera Tucker going in between Wilson and Campbell,
- 48:58Speaker 1: And not only are they hoping that they're going to
- 49:00Speaker 1: get a really good left guard out of Verattucker, I
- 49:02Speaker 1: think they're hoping it's gonna make Wilson and Campbell better
- 49:05Speaker 1: that they're now. Wilson's at his natural position and Campbell
- 49:08Speaker 1: has a veteran next to him at left guard. So
- 49:11Speaker 1: that whole reshuffling there on the left side in that center,
- 49:15Speaker 1: that to me is what's going to separate this offensive
- 49:18Speaker 1: line from last year. If they're going to be better
- 49:20Speaker 1: than they were last year. Maybe it's a loon MoU
- 49:22Speaker 1: getting involved, maybe it's not, But I think the biggest
- 49:25Speaker 1: thing is those three guys hitting you know, that situation
- 49:29Speaker 1: working out for them on the line, because that's kind
- 49:32Speaker 1: of the swing they took this offseason on that offensive line.
- 49:35Speaker 2: So I had those two separately. I think with Campbell,
- 49:36Speaker 2: obviously it's just the bounce back from the injury. Right
- 49:39Speaker 2: was it the injury? Was it the the level of competition?
- 49:41Speaker 2: Why did he struggle so much in the playoffs? Showing
- 49:44Speaker 2: that now that he's fully healthy, he's back and he's
- 49:46Speaker 2: good to go with Jared Wilson. Last time we saw
- 49:48Speaker 2: him at center, if you remember last camp, he had
- 49:50Speaker 2: some issue snapping, so just didn't really see I don't
- 49:53Speaker 2: think he had any bad snaps the spring, which is
- 49:55Speaker 2: a good sign. And just keeping that going.
- 49:57Speaker 1: Yeah, I just that's what it is. And you know,
- 50:00Speaker 1: I think a lot of people have also asked about
- 50:06Speaker 1: what would happen if Vera Tucker gets hurt and not
- 50:08Speaker 1: really having a lot of confidence that he's going to
- 50:09Speaker 1: stay healthy, And I understand that. The one thing I
- 50:13Speaker 1: would say to that, because this was kind of my
- 50:14Speaker 1: secondary question mark here, I actually think Caleb Blomu could
- 50:19Speaker 1: maybe play some left guard if Vera Tucker ends up
- 50:22Speaker 1: getting hurt. If Vera Tucker has another serious injury, yeah,
- 50:25Speaker 1: and is out for an extended period of time, I
- 50:28Speaker 1: do think they would turn to Lomu. If it's a
- 50:30Speaker 1: spot start in like week eight, then I think it
- 50:33Speaker 1: would be Ben Brown.
- 50:34Speaker 2: I think it would be Ben Brown. Either way. I
- 50:36Speaker 2: think it's so you think second guy.
- 50:38Speaker 1: So you think that if Ben Brown, like if he misses,
- 50:41Speaker 1: if Vera Tucker gets hurt and is going to miss
- 50:43Speaker 1: twelve games, like.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Twelve I don't know, maybe because you're taking don't I
- 50:48Speaker 2: don't want that to happen. Now, you're taking away from
- 50:51Speaker 2: Lomu developing at left tackle because he's just working at
- 50:55Speaker 2: gard and we've seen me right tack or do you
- 50:57Speaker 2: mean left tick right right tackle? Yeah, you're taking away
- 51:00Speaker 2: from one. We're developing a right tackles. He has to
- 51:01Speaker 2: move positions. We've seen that whole up lineman here before,
- 51:05Speaker 2: right where there's a plan to play him somewhere, but
- 51:06Speaker 2: they need him for depth. I almost think it's the opposite.
- 51:09Speaker 2: If you need him to give you a week, you do,
- 51:11Speaker 2: but if it's long term, you still want him working
- 51:13Speaker 2: at tackle. And I think they go to Ben Brown
- 51:15Speaker 2: because I think they feel good about Ben Brown as
- 51:17Speaker 2: they should.
- 51:18Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they should feel good about Ben Brown
- 51:21Speaker 1: as well. But I just back to the original point.
- 51:24Speaker 1: I'm just really hopeful that Vera Tucker in between Campbell
- 51:29Speaker 1: and Wilson's gonna make the whole thing better. It's the
- 51:31Speaker 1: best five theory, right when you have the best five
- 51:33Speaker 1: out there, that whole thing all right, let's move over
- 51:35Speaker 1: to the defense. We're going at a pretty good pace
- 51:38Speaker 1: and I wanted to, you know, we're getting up there
- 51:40Speaker 1: to the break. But that's okay. Let's move over to
- 51:42Speaker 1: the defense. Defensive line, I wrote down, do they have
- 51:47Speaker 1: enough wide bodies on the interior to stop the run? Barmore, Williams,
- 51:53Speaker 1: Dirtin feel pretty good about that trio, especially those first
- 51:56Speaker 1: two games. Obviously, I still don't know if they have
- 52:00Speaker 1: a one for one replacement for Tonga. And yeah, are
- 52:03Speaker 1: they is Dirtin going to be sturdy enough in there?
- 52:07Speaker 1: Are they going to have enough depth behind Dirten? You know,
- 52:09Speaker 1: to have a real rotation there wide bodies like I'm
- 52:13Speaker 1: not looking they have Million Williams and Christian Barmer to
- 52:15Speaker 1: get after the quarterback. Like, I'm not worried too much
- 52:18Speaker 1: about that. I'm more worried about who's going to stuff
- 52:21Speaker 1: the run? Who's going to be that true Tonga replacement.
- 52:24Speaker 1: They feel really good about Corey dirt and it seems
- 52:26Speaker 1: how do we feel about Corey Dirtin in that whole situation.
- 52:29Speaker 2: I think the hope is probably it's Dirdin. I think,
- 52:32Speaker 2: you know, I have my questions about it. Again, he
- 52:34Speaker 2: doesn't have the mass that Tonga does. Yeah, but at
- 52:36Speaker 2: this time last year I think we were asking this
- 52:38Speaker 2: question and not thinking much of Kairos Toga. Sure, and
- 52:41Speaker 2: then he was a breakout star in camp. So the
- 52:42Speaker 2: fact they're so confident in Durden after what they did
- 52:44Speaker 2: with Tonga last year, they deserve I think the benefit
- 52:48Speaker 2: for that has been for the doubt for that. And
- 52:50Speaker 2: then you get into like Eric Gregory and Joshua Farmer,
- 52:52Speaker 2: but they don't have that true nose tackle and maybe
- 52:55Speaker 2: this is gonna be a schematic shift and they plan
- 52:56Speaker 2: on playing without one and they're just going to stop
- 52:59Speaker 2: the run by commit but that is one of the
- 53:01Speaker 2: bigger questions on the defensive side of the ball.
- 53:03Speaker 1: Yeah, it just it seems to me like they got
- 53:06Speaker 1: a little bit smaller on the inside without Tonga. Dirdan's
- 53:09Speaker 1: just not as wide, he's not as big, he's not
- 53:12Speaker 1: as he doesn't have as much mass on him as
- 53:14Speaker 1: a guy like Tonga does. But I do think that
- 53:17Speaker 1: they have good reason to be really high on Corey
- 53:20Speaker 1: Durden in a vacuum. Yeah, it's just Corey Durton in
- 53:23Speaker 1: that specific role that is different. Corey Durden's had some
- 53:27Speaker 1: really good tape in the NFL, and he's just kind
- 53:29Speaker 1: of shot, you know, chipping away at having a bigger
- 53:33Speaker 1: role on a team, and his time was sort of coming.
- 53:36Speaker 1: His tape last year was really really good with the Patriots,
- 53:38Speaker 1: It was really really good with the Rams a couple
- 53:40Speaker 1: of years ago. He just hasn't had a ton of opportunities.
- 53:42Speaker 1: So I think he'll get that this year. Looking at
- 53:45Speaker 1: the edge, Maybe the most hyped player of the spring,
- 53:49Speaker 1: I would say on the whole team was Elijah Ponder.
- 53:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 53:53Speaker 1: I felt like I just everything I read, everything I
- 53:56Speaker 1: heard every person you talked to Elijah Ponder, Elijah Ponder,
- 53:59Speaker 1: Elijah Ponder. Are we buying or selling this breakout for
- 54:03Speaker 1: Elijah Ponder?
- 54:04Speaker 2: Uh? Well, that's what we're gonna find out, right. I
- 54:07Speaker 2: wonder if he's just a pass rusher, And look, he
- 54:09Speaker 2: was good and passed USh role last year, played a
- 54:11Speaker 2: quarter of the snaps that the average was closer to
- 54:13Speaker 2: a third. You know, later in the year, as guy
- 54:16Speaker 2: started to get banged up, the question is, okay, if
- 54:18Speaker 2: they're not gonna have Landry, if they're not gonna have Acus,
- 54:20Speaker 2: or if those guys aren't a hundred percent. The jump
- 54:23Speaker 2: from situational pure pass rusher to now you're gonna have
- 54:27Speaker 2: to play on all three downs now you're gonna have
- 54:28Speaker 2: to play the run. That's a pretty big jump. So
- 54:32Speaker 2: that that's what I'll be interesting to see. That is
- 54:33Speaker 2: a major storyline in this camp. And then to take
- 54:35Speaker 2: it a step further, the other guy who was very
- 54:38Speaker 2: hyped up this spring was Braden Swinson. And so, okay,
- 54:42Speaker 2: if Ponder is gonna become a starter, because what we
- 54:44Speaker 2: saw this spring was Ponder was a starter opposite Jones
- 54:46Speaker 2: without Landry and Akus and there's a real chance they
- 54:48Speaker 2: have to play games this year without either of those guys. Yeah,
- 54:51Speaker 2: so okay, who's next up? Is that that rotational rusher?
- 54:55Speaker 2: And it's there's really nobody with the NFL experience. But
- 54:58Speaker 2: remember Ponder was viewed as a draft there were some
- 55:01Speaker 2: questions about his coachability was the word that was used.
- 55:03Speaker 2: But then you have Mike Vrabel and Mike Smith raving
- 55:06Speaker 2: about how he's changed his approach. If he can be
- 55:08Speaker 2: the guy that many thought he was coming out of
- 55:10Speaker 2: the draft, that would be huge. So he's somebody I'm
- 55:12Speaker 2: looking at you like, he's one of the more fascinating
- 55:14Speaker 2: Playerswinson this Swinson, Yeah, yeah, he's one of the more
- 55:17Speaker 2: fascinating players to me in this entire camp is just
- 55:21Speaker 2: what happens with Braden Swinson. Do we get that breakout?
- 55:24Speaker 2: Does he kind of justify some of that hype heid
- 55:26Speaker 2: coming out of the draft. And if not, I mean
- 55:29Speaker 2: the doors wide open now you're on to Ke Hutchins
- 55:31Speaker 2: and Xavier Homes and Jesse Luken and Amari gainor so
- 55:34Speaker 2: he's a sneaky key player. He's in the spotlight outside
- 55:39Speaker 2: of like May and Campbell, right of the guys that
- 55:41Speaker 2: maybe aren't household names. I think Swinson's in the spotlight
- 55:44Speaker 2: maybe more than anybody. He's a very very very important
- 55:47Speaker 2: player for this team in this camp.
- 55:50Speaker 1: Yeah, all the questions with Swinson were about maturity, none
- 55:53Speaker 1: of them were about talent. Right, he was the top
- 55:55Speaker 1: one hundred talent in his draft. He fell because of
- 55:58Speaker 1: some of those maturity concerns. So if he has matured
- 56:02Speaker 1: and if he has boughten into being a pro and
- 56:05Speaker 1: all those different types of things, that was why we
- 56:08Speaker 1: thought at the time he might be a steel right
- 56:10Speaker 1: where they got him between him and Ponder, And I
- 56:12Speaker 1: think Ponder obviously has that inside track and is you know,
- 56:15Speaker 1: maybe a little bit ahead not maybe he is a
- 56:18Speaker 1: little bit ahead of where Swinson is one of those
- 56:22Speaker 1: guys it feels like needs to pop, like one of
- 56:24Speaker 1: those guys needs to have that your two leap breakout,
- 56:26Speaker 1: whatever you want to call it, to sort of supplement
- 56:30Speaker 1: the fact that Landry and Akis's situations are up in
- 56:32Speaker 1: the air right now.
- 56:34Speaker 2: So we'll see about those guys. That's the that feels
- 56:37Speaker 2: like the make.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Or break on the edge though. Yeah, you know, we'll
- 56:40Speaker 1: see what happens with Landry and Akis. But if they
- 56:42Speaker 1: can get Ponder or Swinson or Bolt to be like
- 56:45Speaker 1: real rotational players, then you feel a lot better about
- 56:48Speaker 1: what that group looks like on paper. Going to the linebackers.
- 56:53Speaker 1: One of the more like sneaky under the radar guys
- 56:56Speaker 1: that I talked to you about yesterday when we were
- 56:58Speaker 1: texting was kJ Britt. I just feel like kJ Britt
- 57:01Speaker 1: for Jack Gibbons is one of those sneaky swaps that
- 57:04Speaker 1: they made this offseason. Jack Van Gibbons was really steady
- 57:08Speaker 1: for them when Spoayane got hurt last year and had
- 57:10Speaker 1: to play a little bit. Is kJ Brick going to
- 57:13Speaker 1: be the same because it's kind of those three guys, Well,
- 57:15Speaker 1: it's Ellis, It's splain, It's Britt.
- 57:18Speaker 2: I think that's unfair to leave Chad Mum off that list.
- 57:21Speaker 2: He was the green dot in Mini camp, similar profile
- 57:23Speaker 2: to Britt. Britz played a little more defense, but primarily
- 57:26Speaker 2: special team or good athlete, that sort of thing I
- 57:28Speaker 2: literally wrote for linebacker, Like my question, my storyline is
- 57:32Speaker 2: there were another Jack Gibbons on the roster this year
- 57:34Speaker 2: because last year we thought they were maybe a little
- 57:36Speaker 2: thin at linebacker, and then Jack Gibbons sort of emerged.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Is Oh, this guy's gonna do more than just play
- 57:41Speaker 2: special teams, okay, and so can somebody do that this year?
- 57:44Speaker 2: I thought Britt had a good start to the spring
- 57:46Speaker 2: before he got banged up. Muma again in miniamp was
- 57:49Speaker 2: the green dot guy. He got some opportunities. I think
- 57:52Speaker 2: both probably make the team. I think they can carry
- 57:54Speaker 2: four linebackers for sure, or who's that next man up?
- 57:57Speaker 2: I think they're both in competition for that role.
- 58:00Speaker 1: Don't sleep on Kleil Jacobs.
- 58:02Speaker 2: Yeah, he's probably just a special teamer at this point.
- 58:04Speaker 1: I would think he might be, but don't I'm just saying,
- 58:06Speaker 1: don't sleep on huh. I think Clelil Jacobs is another
- 58:08Speaker 1: one in that taner arc in Miles Montgomery, like those guys,
- 58:13Speaker 1: those udfas that have a real chance. I put Cleil
- 58:15Speaker 1: Jacobs at the top of us pretty I don't.
- 58:17Speaker 2: Know they put him at the top. He's up there,
- 58:19Speaker 2: but so is he gonna beat out one of breater Muma,
- 58:23Speaker 2: because I don't think they're carrying five linebackers.
- 58:25Speaker 1: They carried five last year, unless it depends on how
- 58:27Speaker 1: you count to Vai.
- 58:29Speaker 2: But I kind of counted Moore as an edge guy.
- 58:31Speaker 1: Splaine, Ellis Gibbons to Vay Mapu.
- 58:37Speaker 2: Okay, so I guess maybe Jacobs could be Mapo really
- 58:40Speaker 2: didn't play right, all right, Yeah, that's fair, all right. Cornerbacks, yep,
- 58:46Speaker 2: they have this group of cornerbacks, let's call it four
- 58:51Speaker 2: through five or six spots, Chucky Trees, Charles Woods, Kobe Minor,
- 58:58Speaker 2: Karan Prunty and saying, don't sleep about killing Jacobs, don't
- 59:02Speaker 2: sleep on Marcella's dial, bouncing back and Marcella's dial, people forget,
- 59:06Speaker 2: don't forget about Marcelli's die. Was having a really good
- 59:09Speaker 2: summer Lize year, really good. Was a core special teamer
- 59:11Speaker 2: as a rookie and played it well, played the nickel
- 59:13Speaker 2: a little bit. Yeah, came back last year was like
- 59:16Speaker 2: playing well at defensive camp and then towards ACL so
- 59:19Speaker 2: he was limited in the spring. We really didn't see him.
- 59:21Speaker 2: If he can pick up where he left off, he's
- 59:23Speaker 2: gonna make the team and he might be the fourth corner,
- 59:26Speaker 2: yeah and play you know, he'll be a starting gunner
- 59:27Speaker 2: and all of that you didn't name. Was that the
- 59:30Speaker 2: whole list?
- 59:31Speaker 1: That was my list?
- 59:32Speaker 2: Okay, you got to put Kendall Wildor on there.
- 59:34Speaker 1: Oh, I forgot about Phieling.
- 59:36Speaker 2: He's forgetting, guys. Vildor looked like you, guys, Vildor looked
- 59:39Speaker 2: like the guy in the spring that was going to
- 59:41Speaker 2: be How is it my bad? He's really the only
- 59:43Speaker 2: veteran in that group again, behind the starters, like the
- 59:46Speaker 2: depth options and if Gonzales is going to hold in,
- 59:52Speaker 2: you figure Vildor is going to get most of that time. Yeah,
- 59:55Speaker 2: So Wildre and dial are the two that interests me
- 59:57Speaker 2: the most. And then Prunty two. Prunty's won, Like does
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: he just make the team on special teams alone? And
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: then we'll see do you think there's a chance they
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: view Prunty as essentially like Nate Ebner Right that fifth
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: round special teams pick and we might not see him
- 1:00:10Speaker 2: a corner. Doesn't matter. He's gonna make the team because
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: he's playing special teams. Interesting, is he one of those types?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: So I viewed him as more he's got all he's
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: really toolsy, he's got length, he's got size, he's got
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: some straight line speed. But I just think that he's
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: like a cut a year maybe even two years away.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: Well, so I guess here's a better version of that question.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: Let's say they carry. So they're gonna carry uh Gonzales,
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Davis Jones, and then what two backups?
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: Like five corners?
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: Five usually? Yeah?
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Right? Can punt A? Can Prunty make the team if
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: he's not one of the five best corners just because
- 1:00:46Speaker 2: of special teams?
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: Maybe?
- 1:00:48Speaker 2: I think so. I think there's a real chance that
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: that's what his path to the roster is.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: So I I think Charles Woods is on this team.
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: I think that he was too good last year when
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: he had to play that. I yeah, but so that
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: that's the part that I I guess I have a
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: tough time with like keeping too many of these guys.
- 1:01:06Speaker 2: So Wood are the two that are Do you think
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: they're competing?
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Do you think they're competing for the same spot, though,
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: as like the veteran that you know has there's a chance, yeah,
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: and then maybe.
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: And then you're gonna keep one of the young guys
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: in dial or you know, it definitely helps that minor
- 1:01:21Speaker 2: can play the slot. Crossley's in the mix too. We
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: should throw his name in there.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Dial intrigues me because of how much he was playing
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: the nickel before he.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Got hurt, and how much and how much he's playing
- 1:01:31Speaker 2: special teams.
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: Yeah, so he we keep talking, and I keep talking
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: just kind of segued into the safety thing about being
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: having some sort of three safety flexibility. Mike Brown got
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: a lot of that look in the spring. I'm not
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: sure if I'm ready to anoint Mike Brown as the
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: guy that I want to be playing as much as
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: what some teams play like three safety nickel and dime
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: these days, is the guy like Marcella's Dial who's got
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: a bigger body type and a little bit more physical
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: and is going to play in the kicking game and
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: all that kind of stuff. Can he be kind of
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: a de facto third safety? You know, we list him
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: at corner, but really we're playing him at nickel or
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: you know kind of like as a safety hybrid type
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: of player. Either way, I would just like to see
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: that role emerge. I keep pounding the table for that.
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I think it's important because I think what is gonna
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: happen is that teams, just like Seattle did in the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: Super Bowl, they're gonna go heavy. They're gonna put multiple
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: tight ends on the field, and they're gonna run at
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: the edges. And that's because you're in three corner nickel.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: You're in standard nickel all the time. So in order
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: to combat that, I think you need to get some
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: bigger bodies out on the field. But the question is
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: do they have the bigger bodies? Like, right, is Mike
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: Brown good enough to play that much? Is Marcella's dial
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: good enough to play that much? On defense? I don't know.
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: The other secondary thing about safety that I wrote down
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: was just Craig Woodson and him just kind of taking
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: that next step as well.
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I had Craig Woodson just you know, if he
- 1:02:56Speaker 2: does take the year or two leap from where he started,
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: what does that mean for you? Not finishes but like
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: plays this year?
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: Yep, all right, special teams what he got?
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: So there's two Uh, the one. The immediate one is
- 1:03:09Speaker 2: the kick returner. Yeah, we talked about this at nauseum
- 1:03:12Speaker 2: last year. Kick returner is an important position now. I
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: mean that difference in what did we figured out from
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: the best team just to average is like six yards
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: of return, which is you're gonna return like it can
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: net out to like twenty five or thirty yards a
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: game in field position. That thing's wide open. You know,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: is it one of the running back because that Kyle
- 1:03:32Speaker 2: Williams Henderson was good, but also do you want to
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: give him that workload on top of the running back thing?
- 1:03:37Speaker 2: Is this the way if third running back makes the team.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: We didn't see them do any kick return in the spring,
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: so we have no idea who's in contention for this.
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a great point, and I would just add
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: to that. Once they lost Antonio Gibson and they made
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: the decision that Trayvon Henderson was too valuable to put
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: on kickoff return, that was kind of a non play
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: for them. It was like make the thirty yard line
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: and hold your breath thing, We're gonna make the thirty line.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: I'm not saying that they have to like have it
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: bes dynamic or like, you know, all of a sudden,
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: they are Cordarol Patterson's back there returning. But remember but
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: like something, you looked this.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Up and there was a strong correlation between the best
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: kick return teams and just the best teams in the NFL.
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: Well, the Bills I think probably were last year.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: The Bills were up there.
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: I remember Davis was a great run.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: The Broncos rup there. The Bills kept flipping those games
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: with kick returns like it matters. Now, that is an important.
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: The volume of returns have made it matter.
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: I think we're gonna get to the point, by the way,
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: within the next five years. That's going to be when
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: we do special teams kicker, punter, long snapper, returner. Yeah,
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: and you saw a guy. Where do the Steelers take
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: Kyden Wetchin? It was early Yes, I'm like the fourth
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: round pure The guy had more kick returns than catches
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: in college. I would not be surprised if it trends
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: in that direction. Yea overall football philosophy thought, and that
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: becomes its own position. We're not there yet, certainly not
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: with his Patriots roster, but that's gonna be something to watch.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: And then my other one was.
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: I just don't want to quickly before you get to
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: the other I just don't want the kickoff thing to
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: be a throwaway like it was at the end of
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: last season. And I don't know what the answer is.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: No, that's what I'm saying.
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: It's I don't know if Travon Henderson is the answer,
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: because he is so valuable to them offensively. Yeah, but
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: we obviously saw what he did in the preseason with
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: the very first touch of the season as a house call.
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: He had another big one at some point right where
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: they put him back there, like yeah, late in the game,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: just to.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Kind of it was against Oh, no, it was Jeremiah Webb.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: Had like a forty I want to say it had
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: like a forty yard return. I just would like to
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: see something. I don't know what it is. I don't
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: know if it's Henderson. I don't know, if you know
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: one of these younger running backs like jam Miller, Miles
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: Montgomery has a little bit more juice.
- 1:05:39Speaker 2: But I always like to see them. Kyle Williams and
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: the luck.
- 1:05:41Speaker 1: Yeah, last year kind of painful to watch it time.
- 1:05:44Speaker 2: No, and it needs to be better. Yeah, I mean
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: the bright glass in case of emergency, I guess you
- 1:05:48Speaker 2: could do at least to start the season. Jeremi Webb's
- 1:05:52Speaker 2: a really good kick returner. Yeah, and I don't think
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: Jeremi Webb's going to make the team. They have too
- 1:05:55Speaker 2: many receivers. But de elevate him from the practice squad
- 1:06:00Speaker 2: the first couple of weeks and then kind of see
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: from there if he really starts making a difference. Is
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: there were a world where Jeremiah Webb ends up on
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: the fifty three at some point this year because he's
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: such a good kick returner. They don't have another.
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: Option even as a practice squad elevation.
- 1:06:15Speaker 2: Right, but you can only do that three times. I
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: think as a practice squad at elevation actually makes a
- 1:06:18Speaker 2: lot of sense. Yeah, I would keep him just for that,
- 1:06:20Speaker 2: and maybe that's when your elevations the first few weeks.
- 1:06:23Speaker 2: But you can only do that three weeks. Then what
- 1:06:24Speaker 2: are you doing?
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: Right? Okay? What was your last thing? Then we got
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: to take a break.
- 1:06:28Speaker 2: They really wanted competition for Bryce Bearinger in the spring.
- 1:06:32Speaker 2: They brought a guy in a rookie minute time.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Did they signed a true UFA punter.
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: Because maybe I don't know, because maybe the top udfa's
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: didn't want to come the guys who signed signed in
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: places that they were going to be the.
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: Punter or an open competition type thing.
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: Right, They didn't sign to be the second guy. So look,
- 1:06:50Speaker 2: maybe him beating out the two guys he beat out
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: in rookie and mandatory mini camp, maybe that was the competition. Hey,
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: we brought two guys in, neither one of them were
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: better than Bearinger. We're gonna do better this year. That's
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: the competition, end of story. But if he gets off
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: to a shaky starting camp, like there's some guys out
- 1:07:07Speaker 2: there we talked about this, Jamie Gillen I believe is
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: still unsigned.
- 1:07:13Speaker 10: He is.
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: He's also Scottish, so you could do that whole thing.
- 1:07:17Speaker 2: But Jamie Gillen's a good punter. Yeah, Jamie Gillen is
- 1:07:20Speaker 2: an NFL caliber punter. If it gets shaky with Bryce Behinger,
- 1:07:24Speaker 2: you know, maybe this air right we brought in Udfa's
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: that didn't work, and you know, now you're midwa your camp.
- 1:07:29Speaker 2: Maybe Jamie Gillen won't sign that kind of contract right
- 1:07:31Speaker 2: now because he's been an established NFL player and he
- 1:07:34Speaker 2: doesn't want to come in and compete. But suddenly he
- 1:07:36Speaker 2: gets to mid August, oh, I don't have a job.
- 1:07:38Speaker 2: The Patriot's looking at it all right, Bryce Bearinger has
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: been great, Like I don't think that that maybe they're
- 1:07:43Speaker 2: not off the hook just yet, or Bearinger's off the
- 1:07:46Speaker 2: hook just yet. He's be interested to see if they
- 1:07:48Speaker 2: bring competition in during camp.
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: All right, fair enough, all right, We're gonna take a
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: quick break. I see all your calls lined out. We

- 1:11:16Speaker 1: Sox that they're about to get the first game underway,
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: right yeah, fourteen.
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: Straight, fourteen straight.
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: It's pretty incredible.
- 1:11:24Speaker 2: Tie and break the franchise record today, doubleheader.
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: It's one of those things about baseball that's like nineteen
- 1:11:30Speaker 1: forty six, right, that's that this hasn't happened for the
- 1:11:34Speaker 1: Red Sox in nineteen since nineteen forty six, like that's
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: before our parents were alive, right like that, Like this
- 1:11:42Speaker 1: is like Ted Williams was like was play in the lineup. Yeah,
- 1:11:45Speaker 1: I mean that is incredible. I like that about baseball
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: is you know, baseball is not my favorite sport, but
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: it is historical in that sense, like you don't get
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: that in other sports where it's like this hasn't happened
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: in one hundred years, Like this is a legit this
- 1:12:00Speaker 1: and happened in one hundred years.
- 1:12:02Speaker 2: Well, I mean it's a crazy thing about like fourteen
- 1:12:04Speaker 2: in a row, fourteen out of one sixty two. That's
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: almost ten percent of the season. Yeah, So it's funny
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: in football that's only like a two game winning streak.
- 1:12:11Speaker 2: But I thought I was talking about this the other
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: day in the radio. If you win back to back
- 1:12:15Speaker 2: games and then go five hundred the rest of the year,
- 1:12:18Speaker 2: your ten win team, you're probably in the playoffs.
- 1:12:20Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: Yeah, it's crazy thing about.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's what whenever we talk about the schedule
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: on this show, whether it was last year or with
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: the easy schedule talk or this year with the harder
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: schedule talk, I always come back to that. The Patriots
- 1:12:38Speaker 1: have four games against the Jets and the Dolphins. Right,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: if they go four and oh in those four games
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: against the Jets and the Dolphins. They need to find
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: six wins out of the other thirteen games that they have.
- 1:12:53Speaker 2: On their schedule. That's less than five hundred.
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: Actually, it's less than five hundred to get the ten wins.
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: And I think if you get the ten wins, you
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: probably feel pretty good about making the playoffs, especially with
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the new watch.
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: But then you got to do the whole year of well,
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: most of their wins came against the Jets and the Dolphins.
- 1:13:05Speaker 2: Are they even that good?
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: Absolutely? But I'm just saying no. I know people act like,
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: you know, the schedule is this gauntlet, and it's harder,
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: no doubt about it. But when you look at it
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: that way, can they go six and seven? I didn't
- 1:13:18Speaker 1: mean to do that, but can they go six and
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: seven and four and oh again? And then all of
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: a sudden you have it? Sounds doable, very doable. All right,
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: Easier said than done. Let's get to the phones. I
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: know a lot of you guys have been waiting for
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: like over an hour, so I apologize. Patty's an aguan.
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: What's up? Patty?
- 1:13:34Speaker 15: Hey, what's up?
- 1:13:35Speaker 8: Guys?
- 1:13:35Speaker 15: Two hundreds?
- 1:13:38Speaker 2: We forgot about that.
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: We're going to do that. That's your job to remember
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: those things.
- 1:13:43Speaker 2: That is my I totally forgot about that. I'll come
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: up with something by the end of the show.
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: Thanks Patty, thank you.
- 1:13:49Speaker 15: You got it. So I got a few things I
- 1:13:51Speaker 15: wanted to cover. Quick story and question and prediction. So Evan, yesterday,
- 1:13:56Speaker 15: I'm p you were talking about at lists and being
- 1:13:58Speaker 15: on Martha's vineyard and being more about her worry about
- 1:14:01Speaker 15: him getting sprayed by a skunk. Yea, because there are
- 1:14:03Speaker 15: a lot of skunks. So last night, nine thirty, getting ready,
- 1:14:08Speaker 15: you know, my wife's getting ready to shower and we're
- 1:14:09Speaker 15: getting ready to go to bed. I let our dogs out,
- 1:14:12Speaker 15: and I have a seven year old dear bread German shepherd.
- 1:14:16Speaker 15: She gets frigging sprayed by a skunk.
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: Oh no, the worst.
- 1:14:21Speaker 15: But we we Hey, we worked as a team and
- 1:14:23Speaker 15: we knocked it out. We got her like cleaned and
- 1:14:26Speaker 15: out kept her outside, got her cleaned, and you know,
- 1:14:29Speaker 15: I was We were in bed by ten thirty. Yeah,
- 1:14:31Speaker 15: not so it's terrible. Just you know, just if you
- 1:14:35Speaker 15: and Jess ever run into it, just work as a team,
- 1:14:37Speaker 15: don't panic, and just get it done, you know. So
- 1:14:42Speaker 15: quick prediction, I'm gonna throw one of these out, maybe
- 1:14:45Speaker 15: every week until like the season starts. So my prediction
- 1:14:49Speaker 15: for rookies of the year on defense, I got Kate
- 1:14:53Speaker 15: McDonald from Houston. He's my defensive rookie of the Year
- 1:14:57Speaker 15: for the NFL in twenty twenty six. And I'll you're
- 1:15:00Speaker 15: gonna hate this. This is why I think Buffalo is
- 1:15:03Speaker 15: going to be good. I got Skylar Bell as my
- 1:15:04Speaker 15: offensive rookie of the year. But the question that I
- 1:15:09Speaker 15: had is regarding the edge position. I don't know why.
- 1:15:14Speaker 15: I kind of knew Landry opening up on puff was
- 1:15:17Speaker 15: gonna it was a possibility, but it just I'm a
- 1:15:22Speaker 15: little bit concerned about it, only because you know, we
- 1:15:26Speaker 15: don't only have him no gay Baccus and I mean
- 1:15:30Speaker 15: Acus is young. I'm just worried, like what happens if
- 1:15:33Speaker 15: there's a stepback and you know, and and the guy
- 1:15:37Speaker 15: just says, you know what, I've done enough. I've played
- 1:15:40Speaker 15: in the Super Bowl last year. I'm hanging him up.
- 1:15:43Speaker 15: I just want to get your guys thoughts on that,
- 1:15:45Speaker 15: like if he misses extended time, like there there has
- 1:15:48Speaker 15: to be a move coming. No, And that's kind of
- 1:15:51Speaker 15: the question.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Thanks for the call, Patty. Sorry about the dob, but
- 1:15:54Speaker 1: I'm glad it worked out quickly. We when we were
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: on Martha's Vineyard. Because I don't know if everybody heard
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: it yesterday, so I'll just tell the quick story. When
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: we were on Martha's vineyard. I we got back from
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: dinner and I went to go take Atlas out after
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: we got back, and I walked out onto the porch
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: on the house that we were staying and and I
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: was staring dead red right out of skunk, and so
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: I just took Atlas. We high tailed it back inside
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: and we I was like, you'll go to the bathroom
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: in the morning, dude, because that we're not dealing with
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: that I that skunks and ticks him getting sprayed by
- 1:16:31Speaker 1: a skunk or getting ticks on him or like my
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: two like dad things that I'm like very in all about.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: You know, you just don't want any ticks on him
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: or anything like that to the edge position. It's it's
- 1:16:43Speaker 1: definitely the you know, we feel the same way. You know,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: it's a concern. I thought about that with Harold Landry
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: as well, because I know how much it took just
- 1:16:51Speaker 1: to get him active for the Super Bowl, not even
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: to play in the Super Bowl, but just to have
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: him dressed and be healthy enough to dress in the
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: super Bowl. That knee has been drained, it's been surgically repaired.
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: It's kind of a ticking time bomb, so to speak.
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: At some point, I do wonder if retirement is on
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: the table. I hope it's not anytime soon, but I
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: hear what Patti is saying. I think that that was
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: a thought of mine. Was maybe if they had won it,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: it would have been.
- 1:17:20Speaker 2: More of a thought.
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: But still I wasn't sure one hundred percent that he'd
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: be back this year.
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: I wasn't either, and now there's an out in his
- 1:17:28Speaker 2: contract after this upcoming year. Yeah, so it's probably more
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: of a conversation for the upcoming offseason, but it's it's
- 1:17:34Speaker 2: an understandable question.
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: Yep. All right, herm is in DC. What's up? HERM
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: trying to click there? And gentlemen, hey.
- 1:17:44Speaker 16: Quick against two quick questions.
- 1:17:46Speaker 15: My first question.
- 1:17:49Speaker 16: Again talking about the package, right, so I think Bart
- 1:17:52Speaker 16: was talking about earlier. How obviously it won't.
- 1:17:54Speaker 10: Be ideal if you missed time. My first question was,
- 1:17:57Speaker 10: given the position he plays, I guess, would it really be,
- 1:18:02Speaker 10: like I guess, a big of a deal if you
- 1:18:04Speaker 10: missed Quoe unquote time because it's really just listen, seaball, getball, right.
- 1:18:09Speaker 10: I guess in my simple mind, it's not a whole
- 1:18:11Speaker 10: bunch of schematics Taxis positions. So to me, I feel
- 1:18:16Speaker 10: like it's not that big of a deal. It's missed
- 1:18:18Speaker 10: a bunch of time.
- 1:18:19Speaker 16: And then my second question.
- 1:18:22Speaker 10: Foreshadowing a little bit, right, I looked up this morning.
- 1:18:24Speaker 8: I think.
- 1:18:26Speaker 10: Josh mcdaniealds has I think two years left on the deals.
- 1:18:28Speaker 10: In other words, after this upcoming season, that will be
- 1:18:31Speaker 10: I think the last nar is original deal for Vegas,
- 1:18:36Speaker 10: just in case, for some you know reason, we cannot
- 1:18:40Speaker 10: keep him. Who would you guys think, should I guess,
- 1:18:44Speaker 10: get the old Sea rolls?
- 1:18:46Speaker 1: Is it a in house thing?
- 1:18:48Speaker 10: Or who would you like to see from the outside
- 1:18:51Speaker 10: taking over that road? Just like again, God forbid Josh
- 1:18:54Speaker 10: McDonald's doesn't get extended here and I take it up deals,
- 1:18:57Speaker 10: Thank you.
- 1:18:57Speaker 1: Thanks sir. I don't see that happening.
- 1:19:00Speaker 2: What happened?
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: Josh McDaniel's going anywhere.
- 1:19:02Speaker 2: So he's also signed through twenty twenty seven, I believe.
- 1:19:05Speaker 1: Okay, So I mean maybe the only head coaching jobs
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: I could see coming available to Josh McDaniels are in college. Yeah,
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: I don't know if you'd really want to do that.
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: I have no idea.
- 1:19:17Speaker 1: I just think that there's way too many fans of
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: him in the building, especially at the ownership level with
- 1:19:23Speaker 1: Josh McDaniels, to just play the game with her. The
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: one guy that I would just mention is Thomas Brown.
- 1:19:31Speaker 1: You know, if Thomas Brown doesn't jump ship before that,
- 1:19:34Speaker 1: which I think he might, But if he doesn't, then
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: I could see Thomas Brown being elevated to O. See,
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: he's pass game coordinator, tight ends coach. Now it's it's
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: an easy sort of elevation there.
- 1:19:46Speaker 2: I think you'd look at him and Ashton Grant, Yeah,
- 1:19:49Speaker 2: as the two guys.
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: The only reason why I took Thomas Brown first that
- 1:19:53Speaker 1: draft is because Ashton is still really young.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: Yeah, no, that makes sense. Thomascreen's done it before. Yeah,
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: obviously he would get the get the nod first. Yeah,
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: but if he leaves to your point, right, because we
- 1:20:03Speaker 2: didn't think he was gonna be back this year. Yeah,
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: we thought he was gonna get an OC job somewhere else.
- 1:20:07Speaker 2: To the first point on gay Baccus, Yeah, it definitely
- 1:20:12Speaker 2: hurts less missing it edge than maybe another position. But
- 1:20:16Speaker 2: it's never good, especially for a rookie, Like there's probably
- 1:20:19Speaker 2: technique things they want to clean up. He's got to
- 1:20:21Speaker 2: get into the chemistry to rush with those other guys.
- 1:20:24Speaker 2: So I guess by default, Yeah, it hurts less for
- 1:20:29Speaker 2: an edge rusher to miss time as opposed to a quarterback.
- 1:20:33Speaker 2: But that doesn't like he's still going to be behind.
- 1:20:36Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. He's still going to be behind. He's
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: still gonna have to play catch up. And the fact
- 1:20:41Speaker 2: that the coaching staff acknowledge he's going to be behind,
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: to me means it's an insignificant amount of catchup that
- 1:20:46Speaker 2: he'll have to do.
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's different calls in terms of like
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: how they're going to rush the pass or how they're
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: going to stop the run? Are we boxing it? Are
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: we you know, slanting or what are we doing spilling here?
- 1:20:58Speaker 1: Are we running a game? We're running a stunt?
- 1:21:01Speaker 2: Like for example, they had that break the rush breakdown
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: against the Bills last year in the game that Buffalo
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: won here where the rushers weren't on the same page, right,
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: And that's the kind of thing you're working on this
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: time of year. Yeah, I agreed that it you know,
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: wide receiver, quarterback right, maybe corner, corner, running back even
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: maybe because of the Blitz assignments and things like that,
- 1:21:22Speaker 2: safety corner very yeah, a safety of linebacker very you know,
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: communication avy position edge.
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: I could see how people would say Seaball get ball right, right,
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: and especially with the way how hard Actus plays. Yeah,
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: I could see that, you know, him coming along a
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: little bit faster. All right, Michael's in New Jersey. What's up, Michael?
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: He's not Michael, Michael, Michael, all right, you call it back, Michael.
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: I don't think Michael was paying attention there. Zach is
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: in Florida. What's up? Zach?
- 1:21:55Speaker 9: Hey, guys, first time, long time. I appreciate you taking
- 1:21:58Speaker 9: the call to questions and then I'll take them off
- 1:22:01Speaker 9: the air. First, What are we waiting on a tight
- 1:22:04Speaker 9: end position right now? I think Rabel made it clear
- 1:22:07Speaker 9: we'll probably be signing someone, and with training camps starting
- 1:22:09Speaker 9: in just a few days, I don't know why we
- 1:22:11Speaker 9: haven't officially signed someone to the team. Feels like if
- 1:22:14Speaker 9: another team were to have an injury, they could take
- 1:22:17Speaker 9: some of the guys that we might be interested in,
- 1:22:18Speaker 9: So why not act on it now? It's pretty clear
- 1:22:20Speaker 9: we're going to sign someone. And then the second question
- 1:22:23Speaker 9: I have. I don't want to get two in the
- 1:22:26Speaker 9: weeds on it, but I think a lot about the
- 1:22:28Speaker 9: way we've remade our wide receiver room over the last
- 1:22:31Speaker 9: few months and years, compared to the Steelers room with
- 1:22:34Speaker 9: getting DK Metcalf similar to AJ Brown and then now
- 1:22:37Speaker 9: Romeo dobb kind of being what Michael Pittman's expected to
- 1:22:40Speaker 9: be for them this year. And I'm curious, do you
- 1:22:43Speaker 9: guys prefer our two receiver room over there to receive
- 1:22:47Speaker 9: a room? So if we're kind of comparing the DK Metcalf,
- 1:22:50Speaker 9: I know he didn't want to come here, but if
- 1:22:51Speaker 9: we think about giving up a second for him and
- 1:22:53Speaker 9: then a seventh for Pittman compared to the deal we
- 1:22:55Speaker 9: gave the Dobbs and the pick we gave up for
- 1:22:58Speaker 9: AJ Brown. Just curious how you as would evaluate those
- 1:23:01Speaker 9: and kind of compare what we have versus what maybe
- 1:23:03Speaker 9: we could have had in a different world.
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Yeah, fair enough, Zach, What what was the first thing
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: he said that? I had a point, and then I
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: completely I I was thinking about what he was saying.
- 1:23:13Speaker 1: Uh to the second point, I guess with the receivers,
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: so DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman versus A. J. Brown
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: Romeo Dobbs. It's funny because I think AJ Brown's better
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: than DK. Yeah, but I think that Pittman's better than Dobbs,
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: or at least has.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: More product jobs is better than Pittman at this point.
- 1:23:29Speaker 1: So maybe, but Pittman's had more production in this that's true.
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: Well, it's also just the way he asked it. Steelers
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: gave up a second and a seventh. The Patriots gave
- 1:23:39Speaker 2: up a first and a fifth.
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:23:41Speaker 2: Would you rather give up a second and a seventh
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: and have Metcalf and Pittman, or first and a fifth
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: and have AJ Brown and Dobbs.
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: It's a good question, you know.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: I might lean second. Now, I will say, though, I
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: think the Patriots rooms a lot more complete because after
- 1:23:54Speaker 2: that drops off pret I mean, we both like Jeremy
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: Bernard will see what he is, but they don't have
- 1:23:59Speaker 2: much beyond Aaron Pittsburgh. The Patriots have a lot more
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: depth than the Steelers do.
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: A receiver, Yeah, the Steelers, you know, always we always
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: say draft like the Steelers a wide receiver. I was
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: I thought Robin Wilson was going to be a good player,
- 1:24:13Speaker 1: he hasn't really been great for them. That was a
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: little bit of a swing in the miss. It's a
- 1:24:17Speaker 1: good question though about those receivers. I mean, I don't
- 1:24:19Speaker 1: know if the Patriots could have ended up with that
- 1:24:21Speaker 1: because you know, like he said, I don't know the
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: caller said, I don't know if DK was coming here
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: and all that kind of stuff. But it is similar.
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: You know, Pittman is also one of those guys kind
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: of like Dobbs that's going to catch ninety passes at
- 1:24:33Speaker 1: eleven twelve yards a catch like that's kind of his
- 1:24:35Speaker 1: game too. Uh, Sam is in Texas? What's up? Sam?
- 1:24:40Speaker 7: Hey?
- 1:24:40Speaker 16: How are y'all good? It was just scurious on the
- 1:24:44Speaker 16: defensive coordinator situation. I think there was a clear change
- 1:24:49Speaker 16: from the regular season to the postseason last year. So
- 1:24:52Speaker 16: I didn't know if you'll view that as Zach kerr
- 1:24:54Speaker 16: Fley taking over and y'all would expect that more into
- 1:24:57Speaker 16: this season, or if that was just an assessed to
- 1:25:00Speaker 16: get the quarterback in the playoffs. I'll take it up there,
- 1:25:03Speaker 16: thank you.
- 1:25:04Speaker 1: Yes, Sam, it's a good question. So in I don't
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: have the exact numbers in front of me, but their
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: blitz rates specifically skyrocketed in the playoffs, and their man
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: coverage rates skyrocketed in the playoffs as well, So I
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: think it's a combination. I think they're always going to
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: be a little bit more game planning like they are
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: in general. But I think that part of the reason
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: why they didn't do it as much in the regular
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: season is because they kind of felt like, we can
- 1:25:27Speaker 1: beat these teams without emptying the clip, right, so they
- 1:25:30Speaker 1: didn't have to This year, maybe we see a little
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: bit more of what the playoff defense was than versus
- 1:25:35Speaker 1: the defense that was in the regular season. The one
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: thing I also have thought about a little bit when
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: it comes to the playoff defense in a four game sprint,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: I think it's doable to play full tilt like that
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: in seventeen games. I don't know if it's doable to
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: be blitzing fifty percent of the time and man coverage
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: over forty percent of the time. That's a really aggressive
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: brand of defense play, and I don't know if you
- 1:26:01Speaker 1: can do that for seventeen straight weeks.
- 1:26:03Speaker 2: Yeah. I don't think it was a change in coordinator
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: or anything like that. I mean, I think Zach Korr
- 1:26:10Speaker 2: had the you know, was at the wheel the whole time.
- 1:26:12Speaker 2: I think that was just a playoff wrinkle. The question
- 1:26:14Speaker 2: is how much Okay, like it's proven it worked, right,
- 1:26:17Speaker 2: how much does a carryover? So the Patriots blitch I
- 1:26:19Speaker 2: thought I had to hear.
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: I don't never mind, I have it in It's on
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: Patriots dot com somewhere.
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: I know that, I just don't have any the Patriots blitzed.
- 1:26:28Speaker 2: They were nineteenth in the NFL last year in the
- 1:26:30Speaker 2: regular season twenty six point six percent of the time.
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: In the playoffs they ranked first forty two.
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I knew it was a huge jump. Yeah, so
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: we'll see. It's a good question. It's something that you know,
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: we have to wait till the regular season obviously to
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: really find out. I remember the question that Zack asked
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: before the receiver question. He was talking about the tight ends, okay,
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: and why they haven't signed a tight end yet. Yeah,
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: And I think it's a good question because Rabel did
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: say in the spring, yeah, we're going to look to
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: add there. My guess is is that and now Dupree's
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: on pup so this kind of throws a little bit
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: of prevention in it. But I think that between dupre
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: Arc and Westover. Maybe they're a little bit excited about
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: what one of those guys is doing, Eileen Arkin, and
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: maybe they want to give that player an opportunity.
- 1:27:19Speaker 2: So well, could even just be the second part of that.
- 1:27:22Speaker 2: You know, Hey, we want to make sure that we
- 1:27:25Speaker 2: fully evaluate these kids before we go and overextend ourselves,
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: right and even then, like some of these veterans that
- 1:27:32Speaker 2: are out there, if you're gonna sign a bigger name,
- 1:27:33Speaker 2: I'm a little surprised they didn't just sound like a
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: back end of the roster guy just to especially with
- 1:27:36Speaker 2: dupre on pup, just to get through. But again, maybe
- 1:27:39Speaker 2: they want to maximize the reps. It's hey, let's see
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: what we have in these kids. Let's see what they
- 1:27:43Speaker 2: can do, and if we need to add another tight
- 1:27:46Speaker 2: end like some of the veterans, uh, well, Disley doesn't
- 1:27:50Speaker 2: need to do the first week of camp. He's been
- 1:27:51Speaker 2: in this league long enough right then. You know, you'd
- 1:27:54Speaker 2: think those guys, if they get an idea that one
- 1:27:56Speaker 2: of those guys might sign, they'll they'll go out and
- 1:27:59Speaker 2: they'll get at them before. Like those guys aren't in
- 1:28:01Speaker 2: a rush to sign right now.
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: Yeah, So the comparison that I go to and it's
- 1:28:05Speaker 1: just because it's, you know, our time on the bead's
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: probably not the best comparison. But they signed Zeke three
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: weeks into training camp. A couple of years ago, they
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: had some younger running backs that they gave a look to.
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: It wasn't working out, it wasn't going the right direction.
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: They brought in Zeke. Elliott I could see the same
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: thing at tight end. Give Arkin, hopefully Dupre gets off,
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: pup Jack Westover. Maybe give those guys the first couple
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: weeks of camp. If you get around the second preseason game,
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: joint practices around that time of year and you still
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: don't feel good about it, that's when you make calls
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: and that's when you had somebody. My guess is that
- 1:28:40Speaker 1: that's the approach that they're taking. And then there will
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: also be that big roster sort of movement at the
- 1:28:48Speaker 1: cutdown day, whether it's trades, where there's the waiver wire,
- 1:28:51Speaker 1: veterans getting released, so they have a lot of opportunities
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: there that if they just need to go find a
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: veteran body at some point, I think they're going to
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: have chances do that. Adam is in California. What's up, Adam?
- 1:29:04Speaker 16: Hey, guys, do you hear me?
- 1:29:08Speaker 7: Yes?
- 1:29:10Speaker 15: I just have a question.
- 1:29:12Speaker 17: Why is like most Patriot fans I talk to they
- 1:29:16Speaker 17: want Booty gone, like they'd rather hit him gone before
- 1:29:20Speaker 17: any other receiver. Me personally, I think you would, you know,
- 1:29:24Speaker 17: go from the bottom of like get rid of Chisholm
- 1:29:27Speaker 17: or even Pop before Booty because it's been a consistent
- 1:29:31Speaker 17: playmaker and target for Drake since he's been there.
- 1:29:35Speaker 14: And that's all I have to say.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: Thanks for they call Adam. Look, I don't think anybody
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: or I noticed to be for everybody else. I don't
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: want Booty gone in a vacuum. I just look at
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: the whole big picture of the situation. He's in a
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: contract year, he doesn't really have a high volume role,
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: right How happy is he going to be with that?
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: Is that situation going to work itself out? If you're
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: not keeping it him beyond this year, if you're not
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: going to extend his contract this year, is it best
- 1:30:01Speaker 1: to sell high on the player and get what you
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: can for him? Now, with all those things being said,
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: I think if there was an offer out there that
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: they liked, he'd already be gone. So the fact that
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: he's still on the roster tells me that there isn't
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: a trade out there that they feel good about yet.
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: So does it happen in training camp? Somebody gets hurt
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: cut down day I mentioned that kind of window transaction window,
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: you know that something happened there. We'll see. But I
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: don't think the answer to Adam's question has nothing to
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: do with Kaishon Booty, right, It's about the situation that
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: Kaishon Booty is in.
- 1:30:32Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think anybody's rushing out the door. But
- 1:30:34Speaker 2: like you said, it just makes the most sense. And
- 1:30:36Speaker 2: the thing you got to remember it. It doesn't help
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: Kaishan Boody being here. This is a guy that is
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: trending in the right direction, had a good year last year,
- 1:30:44Speaker 2: but it's never at six hundred yards. Yeah, and he's
- 1:30:46Speaker 2: going to hit free agency trying to be paid, trying
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: to get paid. If he's in a reduced role here
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: in New England, that's not going to get him paid.
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: So you know he probably wants out of here again.
- 1:30:56Speaker 2: His role projects to be minimal. Penny Like, if guys
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: start getting hurt in camp, that change is the numbers
- 1:31:00Speaker 2: on it. But you know they could probably I would
- 1:31:06Speaker 2: still try to do a player for player, trade with
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: him and fill one of these depth holes that we've
- 1:31:11Speaker 2: been talking about. But it doesn't make a ton of
- 1:31:13Speaker 2: sense for him to be here. I don't think they
- 1:31:15Speaker 2: need him. He's a good player, but I don't think
- 1:31:16Speaker 2: they need him. And he's in a contract here. He's
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: just kind of the odd man out. And why not Pop,
- 1:31:20Speaker 2: who is also in a contract here? They play very
- 1:31:22Speaker 2: different positions. I think if Pop and May are on
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: the same page, there is a role for Pop before
- 1:31:27Speaker 2: there's a role for Booty, because again with Kayshawn Booty,
- 1:31:29Speaker 2: what you're gonna ask him to do, the routes he's
- 1:31:31Speaker 2: gonna run is what Aj Brown does, is when Mac
- 1:31:33Speaker 2: Collins does, and in some of what Kaya Williams does,
- 1:31:36Speaker 2: And Kyle Williams is entering the second year of his
- 1:31:38Speaker 2: rookie contract. He's more of a long term investment. Pop
- 1:31:40Speaker 2: Douglas is doing something entirely different. His situation doesn't tie
- 1:31:43Speaker 2: into Booties necessarily. So unless you think Kashan Boody's gonna
- 1:31:46Speaker 2: start running a bunch of speed block routes from the slot,
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: which is just not his game, there isn't a huge
- 1:31:53Speaker 2: role for HM, whereas there is potentially a bigger role
- 1:31:54Speaker 2: for Pop Douglas.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: Yeah, and they have more depth there and from Matt
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: Collins into that mix too, Like they have Brown, they
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: have Hollins, they have Kyle Williams. If you want to say,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: Romeo Dobbs can play a little bit of X two,
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: which I think he can did something in Green Bay.
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: Like there's they have like bodies at that spot that
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: have not only play that spot but also have a
- 1:32:14Speaker 1: similar skill set. Like just guys that you know, kind
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: of win more with body positioning and strong hands and
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: sturdy wins at the catch point and things like that. Uh,
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: you know the guys that like Booty and like Pop
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: and Kyle Williams. Like we said earlier in the show,
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: those are the different guys like those are the guys
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: that bring a different flavor to the offense. All right, Eldred,
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: what you got today?
- 1:32:35Speaker 10: Man?
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: Oh wait, there we go, Eldred. How are we doing good?
- 1:32:44Speaker 14: Yeah? I'm kind of like that guy just called though.
- 1:32:47Speaker 14: But my question is, Okay, I know Booties in the
- 1:32:49Speaker 14: contract year you let them going, okay, but you gotta
- 1:32:54Speaker 14: I just can't understand mec Holland because yeah, he did
- 1:32:58Speaker 14: pretty good in the Super Bowl for a couple of
- 1:33:00Speaker 14: plays or whatever. But man, he just just a roll guy.
- 1:33:04Speaker 14: So I can't figure out why he's thirty three. You
- 1:33:07Speaker 14: don't know if you've had the same speed or whatever
- 1:33:09Speaker 14: coming up this year? Why not you some of your
- 1:33:12Speaker 14: younger guys got it, but you some of your younger guys.
- 1:33:15Speaker 14: And and uh maybe Booty like he want to stay,
- 1:33:18Speaker 14: but maybe he would take a produced role.
- 1:33:20Speaker 10: You never know.
- 1:33:21Speaker 14: But my question is this, since Landry is out, don't
- 1:33:25Speaker 14: you think they'll be picking up the phone and calling
- 1:33:27Speaker 14: in New York and asking about Trubodoll.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:33:30Speaker 14: Yeah, what it would take to get him. So that's
- 1:33:32Speaker 14: what I'll be doing.
- 1:33:33Speaker 2: Let me ask you this, Eldridge real quick, because I
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: know you're a big Kisham Booty fan. Would you trade
- 1:33:37Speaker 2: Kishan Booty for Kveon Thibodeau.
- 1:33:42Speaker 14: Beyond with you? If that's the move? I would, you know,
- 1:33:45Speaker 14: if that's the move right there, I.
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: Would probably need to throw in like a fourth or
- 1:33:48Speaker 2: fifth round pick.
- 1:33:48Speaker 14: But yeah, yeah, I'll do it with a fifth and
- 1:33:52Speaker 14: a fourth with Booty, you know, because that's somebody on
- 1:33:55Speaker 14: the edge. And then I talked to NFL because I
- 1:33:57Speaker 14: get my second round Jeft pick back and just cut that. Yeah,
- 1:34:02Speaker 14: that's what I would do, you know, just cut my
- 1:34:04Speaker 14: losses and whatever and go whatever I got right here
- 1:34:08Speaker 14: and hope Switzerland and the other guy, Ponder, you know,
- 1:34:12Speaker 14: works out.
- 1:34:12Speaker 9: The way it's supposed to be.
- 1:34:14Speaker 14: But with Landri on pup that is you saw melk
- 1:34:18Speaker 14: and I'm like, you know. And then the other thing
- 1:34:20Speaker 14: is pay Gunzo. You got a lot of money for
- 1:34:23Speaker 14: the soccer. Pay Gunzo. That's all you gotta do. And
- 1:34:26Speaker 14: I'm out of here.
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: Thanks, thanks for the call, Pey Gonzo. We're all on
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: the same page.
- 1:34:30Speaker 2: I think on the Hollands Booty thing, some of it
- 1:34:33Speaker 2: is leadership. Yeah, I think he's become such a core
- 1:34:36Speaker 2: part of the team. He also I think Elder is
- 1:34:38Speaker 2: underselling it there. Like Hollins was a productive receiver last
- 1:34:40Speaker 2: year forty six catches for five hundred and fifty yards.
- 1:34:44Speaker 2: You know, he's good in the red zone. Yeah, Booty's
- 1:34:47Speaker 2: a little bit younger, but you're also maximizing your return,
- 1:34:50Speaker 2: like you're probably not gonna get a lot for trading mccollins.
- 1:34:54Speaker 1: No, And I just think it's just such a different
- 1:34:56Speaker 1: mindset like mccollins where he is in his career and
- 1:34:58Speaker 1: his acceptance of the role. He's right, I don't.
- 1:35:01Speaker 2: Eldridge said there and you know that take Hinge's lot on.
- 1:35:03Speaker 2: Maybe he'll accept a smaller role. Who knows, I don't know,
- 1:35:06Speaker 2: maybe he will. It's incredibly rare that a guy that's
- 1:35:10Speaker 2: twenty three years old, twenty four years old, it's about
- 1:35:12Speaker 2: to hit free agency for the first time, that, by
- 1:35:15Speaker 2: the way, was significantly underdrafted compared to expectation going into
- 1:35:18Speaker 2: his final college year. I mean, you're talking about leaving
- 1:35:21Speaker 2: millions and millions and millions of dollars on the table
- 1:35:23Speaker 2: to stay and be the fourth wide receiver for Drake May,
- 1:35:26Speaker 2: fifth wide receiver for Drake May. I just if Kaishan
- 1:35:29Speaker 2: Boodey's that much with a Patriots fan, awesome. I'm not
- 1:35:31Speaker 2: knocking him for not wanting to do that, like go
- 1:35:33Speaker 2: get yours, get paid, But I mean that would be
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: a massive sacrifice. If he's willing to say, like, yeah, no,
- 1:35:38Speaker 2: I'll only catch twenty twenty five passes this year, that's fine.
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like Matt Collins. I say similar things
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: every time that comes up. He's a glue guy. He's
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: a locker room glue guy. He knows his role. He
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: knows he's not going to be a high volume guy.
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: He knows his responsibility of you know, leading the room,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: taking the young guins under his wing. Like Efton Chisholm
- 1:36:00Speaker 1: is like his shadowy. They ride together to the facility
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: a lot, and they work out together, and Chishm's model
- 1:36:07Speaker 1: a lot of his workouts after mtc Collins' workout. It's
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: like that, that's mccollins' role on this team. Yeah, that's
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: not kay Shan Boody's role, and nor would I expect
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: him to take on a role like that. So I
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: think they're just at different points in their careers. Let's
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: ander some of these emails and we'll get back to
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: the calls in a second. This is from John uh
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: He asked which offensive and defensive player on the Patriots
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: do you see having the most improvement this upcoming season?
- 1:36:33Speaker 1: So kind of breakout players, offensive defense.
- 1:36:37Speaker 2: Breakout players improved break out? Can I go with a
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: lineman on offense? I do think Jared Wilson is going
- 1:36:46Speaker 2: to be a lot better at center. Okay, on defense,
- 1:36:53Speaker 2: I guess it's kind of the easy one, but Elijah
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: Pondery is probably gonna play a lot more, have a
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: much bigger role.
- 1:36:57Speaker 1: Yeah, so I'll go. I'll go Craig Woodson on defense.
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I think Craig Woodson takes what he did in the
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: playoffs and becomes like a real impact player for them
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: this year. Yeah, I'm gonna go Will Campbell. I'm gonna
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: believe in my guy, Will Campbell.
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: Okay, I almost went Will Campbell.
- 1:37:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna believe in my guy, Will Campbell. I'm gonna
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: say that he bounces back.
- 1:37:14Speaker 2: But here's the thing. If Will Campbell plays the way
- 1:37:16Speaker 2: he did last year before the injury, and he doesn't
- 1:37:18Speaker 2: show improve him but he's just that guy, is it
- 1:37:19Speaker 2: a successful season for him?
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: I would say most people would say no.
- 1:37:24Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: I think I would probably say yes.
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: I would say yes, I'm a little bit tackle in
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: the league. I'd be fine with that.
- 1:37:29Speaker 1: I'm a little bit more lenient probably than some comes
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: to the offensive line.
- 1:37:33Speaker 2: If he's a top fifteen left tackle in the league.
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: It's not the best thing that's ever happened to the Patriots,
- 1:37:38Speaker 2: But I would say, all right, it's enough.
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: Can I give you an offensive line take real quick
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: before we get to this next email, How do I
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: want to put this, when it comes to the offensive line,
- 1:37:49Speaker 1: I'm really not concerned.
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: I'm at yeah. I mean, if your biggest concern is there,
- 1:37:54Speaker 2: you know, secondary depth that guard, they're in a pretty
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: good place.
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: I'm really not concerned. I think this is the most
- 1:37:59Speaker 1: talent that they've had on the offensive line in years.
- 1:38:01Speaker 1: Like they have depth, like Caleb Blomo is gonna be
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: your third tackle, first round pick, you know, a guy
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: who was a consensus first round pick. I just don't
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: have a whole lot of concern. I think that when
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: you have good coaching Josh McDaniels, Doug Moreau, and good
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: coaching with the talent that they have on the line,
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's going to be a top five
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: offensive line in football, but it shouldn't be so bad
- 1:38:23Speaker 1: that it's like anchoring the offense. Yeah. No, they they
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: have enough. I feel like I keep hearing a lot
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: of concerns still about the offensive line. I don't think
- 1:38:34Speaker 1: that that's why this team is not going to reach
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: its potential. I really don't. All Right, next email, here's
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: a uniform question. Were you talking uniforms on pat speed? Yes,
- 1:38:45Speaker 1: So you mentioned they should go back to the old
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: number font in particular the ones on the current jerzoo
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: look weird just being a vertical stick and it needs
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: to be based.
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: On the one. Especially I'm not as I like the
- 1:38:57Speaker 2: old one.
- 1:38:58Speaker 1: Okay, are there any other aspects of the uniforms, logos,
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: team branding you think are in need of updates?
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Not updates? So we were talking about this. The new
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: jerseys have actually grown on me. The current yeah, oh
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: they know the current Yeah. I think maybe because they
- 1:39:15Speaker 2: finally got rid of the blue pants and the silver
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: and all that. Again, I would just go back to
- 1:39:19Speaker 2: the old numbers. That would be you know what I'm
- 1:39:22Speaker 2: talking about, right, Yeah? The old one just loops a
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: little more classic football the one I want to see
- 1:39:29Speaker 2: because we got a question, should the Patriots do new
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: jerseys that are basically the rivalry style but in the
- 1:39:36Speaker 2: traditional color?
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: I see, which I know people hate the stripes. They
- 1:39:41Speaker 2: say they're Coltsish. First of all, those called Bruin stripes
- 1:39:44Speaker 2: because they actually originated at UCLA. I'm good with the
- 1:39:47Speaker 2: Patriots or Bruins stripe team when they start. I think
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: in nineteen sixty they technically had something different, but nineteen
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: sixty one they were Bruin stripes. Give me the nineties
- 1:39:57Speaker 2: Royal Blues, which I know isn't going to happen. So
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: here's my pitch, and it's becoming more popular around the NFL.
- 1:40:02Speaker 2: I actually think we can maybe get this done. We're
- 1:40:04Speaker 2: loud enough with it. Road throwbacks have been a great
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: trend in the last like three to four years. Road throwback,
- 1:40:13Speaker 2: the white throwback. The Niners have had one for a while.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: The Seahawks brought theirs back this year. The Bucks just announced,
- 1:40:19Speaker 2: I think today, that they're going to bring theirs back
- 1:40:22Speaker 2: this year. The Jets do one, which, by the way,
- 1:40:25Speaker 2: it's weird that a uniform I watch growing up is
- 1:40:27Speaker 2: now a throwback. But the Curtis Martin's Jet jerseys are
- 1:40:29Speaker 2: great bring back. They don't even do the home version
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: of that. They only do the road I would love
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: to see, and they wore them in nine when they
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: did that whole throwback. What everyone's fifteenth year the AFL thing. Yeah,
- 1:40:41Speaker 2: give me only for them like once or twice a year.
- 1:40:44Speaker 2: Give me the road white throwbacks. Do them with red pants,
- 1:40:49Speaker 2: red face mask on the white helmet. That's the jersey
- 1:40:53Speaker 2: I want to see. I want to see the road
- 1:40:56Speaker 2: throw back and I want this to be a normalized
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: thing around the NFL. And I've been saying for years
- 1:41:00Speaker 2: Thursday Night Football should be throwback Thursday, and that's how
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: you work this in. But if not, maybe when Miami
- 1:41:06Speaker 2: wears Miami is a road throwback. But when Miami wears
- 1:41:08Speaker 2: their throwback teals, you wear it. Or if you're playing
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: the Bills and they're doing their whoever you're playing, if
- 1:41:13Speaker 2: a team is wearing their throwback, you say you know
- 1:41:15Speaker 2: what will join you and you break out the road throwbacks.
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: That's the uniform I really want to see. Okay, I'll
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: go at the nineties one. I want to see the nineties.
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: I want to see that too. I just kind of
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: don't think that's happening. This one with the red numbers. Yeah,
- 1:41:30Speaker 2: you know what I'm talking about. And you could either
- 1:41:32Speaker 2: do so the white helmet they wear it with the
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: white face mask. Now there were three iterations of it,
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: white face mask, gray face mask, and red. I don't
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: know all this, why don't you. I don't care about
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: the gray face mask. I think that's a me look.
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: If they did it with still the white face mask,
- 1:41:46Speaker 2: that would be fine. But the red face mask and
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: the red pants would be a great look. I'm trying
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: to find a picture of this because they were maybe
- 1:41:54Speaker 2: they didn't wear the white face masks with or the
- 1:41:57Speaker 2: red face mess with the red fans pants, but look
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: at Irving Fryar here. No, I it'd be a great look.
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: It's a slick look.
- 1:42:03Speaker 7: I like.
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: That's what I'm if. If anybody upstairs that's in control
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: these things are listening, I'm telling you that's the next
- 1:42:11Speaker 2: move the road throwback.
- 1:42:12Speaker 1: You know they might be listening.
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: That's why I'm saying.
- 1:42:16Speaker 1: Christopher emailed in about the pace stats that we were
- 1:42:18Speaker 1: talking about the uh second. Yeah, they had to lead
- 1:42:24Speaker 1: in most of their games, so it was beneficial to
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: go slower and run clock. I should have mentioned this,
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: but I try not to bogg it down with too
- 1:42:30Speaker 1: much nerd.
- 1:42:31Speaker 2: Is this like cutout?
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: It's in situation neutral, right, so you're within a score,
- 1:42:36Speaker 1: not the last two minutes of the half, right, So
- 1:42:38Speaker 1: not the last two minutes of the first half or
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: the end of the game, and so they're they're neutral.
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: They account for that in the statistic.
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: I belie even say in terms of total plays run.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: So you know, some of the teams that are at
- 1:42:47Speaker 2: the top. The Cowboys are obviously trailing good amount. The
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: Bears had some leads, the Chargers, the Jaguars, the Broncos.
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: The Broncos were a team. They need to shortened games
- 1:42:55Speaker 2: as much as possible. They ran the fifth most plays
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: the Texans. That's another elite defense. Rams, Giants, Bills, Niners,
- 1:43:01Speaker 2: Rams out the top ten in terms of total plays run.
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: Rather than giving you all the qualifiers and giving you
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: a popsicle headache, I usually just kind of come out with.
- 1:43:09Speaker 2: The fair enough.
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Uh, this is from Ramon and Tampa. Ramon's got
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: some hot takes here.
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: So earlier in the show, I said that Drake may
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: took the Patriots to the Super Bowl. He said, is
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: that true? I don't recall that being the sentiment last year. Well, objectively,
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: he took the team to the Super Bowl. Is a fact.
- 1:43:29Speaker 2: He was the quarterback for the suit. Yes, he didn't
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: physically fly the plane.
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: We could say that he didn't carry them to the
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: Super Bowl because he didn't play well enough. But he
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: did take a team.
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: To the Super You know what, though, that is a
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: good uh semantics submon. That is a good catch twenty
- 1:43:44Speaker 2: two emails because that is very semantics driven.
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: But then this is where it gets even spicier. Not
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: to take anything away from him, but I don't think
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: he was the driving force in the regular season or
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: the Super Bowl.
- 1:43:55Speaker 2: Okay, I mean playoffs. No, he was not the driving force.
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: That's he did not have a good playoffs saying he
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: wasn't the driving force in the regular season. Who what
- 1:44:02Speaker 2: does he say?
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: Who was?
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: Nope, he just said not the driving force in the
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: regular season, to which I say, he was like three
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: votes from winning him Who was?
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: I would assume he means the defense, but they played
- 1:44:13Speaker 2: some weak ass offense there. There was more about the defense,
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: and the driving force in.
- 1:44:19Speaker 1: The regular season was absolutely the offense. In Drake may
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: they were that was one hundred percent what was winning
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: them games in the regular season and then in the
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: playoffs said no, without a doubt, Jos, I don't know,
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: or maybe he's going to say that we the schedule
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: was like the driving force in the regular season, but.
- 1:44:34Speaker 2: Again, the schedule is more about weak defenses than weak offenses.
- 1:44:37Speaker 1: Yeah, fair enough. Uh, this is from Seth. Who do
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: you view as Kyle Williams's upside after one year in
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: the league, or how do you view? Sorry, So he
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: has some comparisons. He was listening to a fantasy football
- 1:44:53Speaker 1: podcast that was your First Mistake, and they mentioned h
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: Terry McLaurin, which I think he said that seems lofty.
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: Agreed that would be I mean the apex of that
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: kind of player to me, and this is maxed out
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: would be Jamison Williams. Okay, like if if if Kyle
- 1:45:11Speaker 2: Williams truly maxes out in every what if goes the
- 1:45:15Speaker 2: right way because Jameson Williams is not volume guy. Jameson
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: Williams is He's gonna run straight down the field, is
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: going to run by guys.
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: He's got He's a strider.
- 1:45:22Speaker 2: But I think in terms of like usage enrolled right, like,
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: think about it, if Kyle Williams maxes out, what's his
- 1:45:28Speaker 2: role so run down the field to run by people,
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: catch the ball?
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: So he said. The other comparison, he uses Philip Dorset, so.
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: That's probably more grounded. I don't think I think.
- 1:45:40Speaker 1: Terrible Dorset is like the floor realistic maybe yeh, somewhere
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: in between there.
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: Dor set If I'm remembering correct, it was a little
- 1:45:46Speaker 2: savvy of a route runner. And I'm not saying ky
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: Wlliams can't get there. I don't think it's like I
- 1:45:50Speaker 2: don't think he wasn't Julian Edelman. But I think Williams
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: needs to improve a little bit to be as a
- 1:45:55Speaker 2: route runner. But I think dor Set's a solid comp.
- 1:45:58Speaker 1: So the I looked at door Set, I don't know
- 1:46:01Speaker 1: if that's I don't know if floor is disrespectful to
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: Philip Dorset. So maybe like that's the comp, Like that's
- 1:46:08Speaker 1: the fair comp.
- 1:46:08Speaker 2: I think that's it, like a fair middle.
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: The guy that I've always looked at as the ceiling
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: comparison for Kyle Williams is Brandon Cooks.
- 1:46:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I remember making it saying that last summer. That's
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: probably more accurate.
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: See Brandon Cook's a little faster, I think. But I
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: think overall, like if we're you know, Dorset's kind of
- 1:46:25Speaker 1: the flourish type of problem, you know, comparison, and then
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: I think Cooks is the ceiling. I don't really see
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: a ton of Terry McLaurin.
- 1:46:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know where that's coming from. I guess
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: in theory because it's a fantasy football podcast, they're just
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: probably talking about ross stats like stats.
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: I'm sorry, I know I shouldn't take shots at the
- 1:46:41Speaker 1: fantasy football people.
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: But yeah I did.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: Anyways, Oh, this is someone that Anthony agrees with you
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: about Pop Douglas, and Paul does bring this up. Paul
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: always points out that Pop and Kishon Booty had similar
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: numbers last year. I feel we tend to overvalue Booty
- 1:46:59Speaker 1: production and undervalue Pop. So will Pop and Pop and
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: he feels that he has a unique skill set at
- 1:47:04Speaker 1: the wire seat room. It is true there are stats
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: aren't very common.
- 1:47:07Speaker 2: So this is actually a good example of the base
- 1:47:09Speaker 2: running analogy I like to use. Right, you have two
- 1:47:12Speaker 2: prospects in the baseball draft. They both run to first
- 1:47:15Speaker 2: base in five seconds flat. One guy does it with
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: perfect form, one guy does it with bad form. Who
- 1:47:19Speaker 2: do you draft?
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: We always do this and I always get it wrong
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: the guy.
- 1:47:22Speaker 2: With imperfect form because he has room to get better. Right,
- 1:47:24Speaker 2: And maybe that's why they had the same production. But
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: I think Booty last year played a very clean season. Yeah,
- 1:47:31Speaker 2: there wasn't much you were looking at were like, here's
- 1:47:33Speaker 2: where you can improve Pop Douglas. There were certainly moments
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: who are like, Okay, that has to be better. Yet
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: they put up the same numbers so if Booty's kind
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: of maxed out and Pop Douglas has all this area
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: for improvement, but they did the same statistically, what happens
- 1:47:48Speaker 2: when Pop Douglas improves, right, He's going to pass him?
- 1:47:51Speaker 1: Sure, I hear you.
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: Now that's it's not guaranteed the pot you had to
- 1:47:55Speaker 2: put the work in, right, Yeah, it's not guaranteed that
- 1:47:57Speaker 2: Pop Douglas pass him. But again, if him and may
- 1:47:59Speaker 2: have really kind of turned a page and their chemistry
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: is improved, maybe you start to see that.
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: Yeah, this is emails from Alex. He said during the
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: World Cup final, little player was offside and they were
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: able to show pepieve it's not plural off side, not
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: off side.
- 1:48:17Speaker 2: Well, in the NFL, it's off sides. And this is
- 1:48:19Speaker 2: an NFL building again, so offside. Yeah, and they do
- 1:48:23Speaker 2: they do singular for teams too.
- 1:48:26Speaker 10: But do you.
- 1:48:28Speaker 2: Spain have advanced.
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: Oh yes, sure. During the World Cup final, player was
- 1:48:34Speaker 1: offside and they were able to show through some sort
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: of cross section how much he was offside. So she's
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: talking about var and the technology. Why can't that sort
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: of technology be used in the NFL. The quickest answer
- 1:48:47Speaker 1: is money. It costs money.
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: So it's money. But also because they did that, Remember
- 1:48:51Speaker 2: they tried to do the virtual measurement.
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: That was a little different, But yes, it's.
- 1:48:57Speaker 2: The The virtual measurements only as good as the spot
- 1:48:59Speaker 2: of the ball. They need to get they need to
- 1:49:00Speaker 2: enhance the spotting the ball. So what you need for
- 1:49:02Speaker 2: that is not only a chip in the ball, but
- 1:49:04Speaker 2: a chip in every player's knee pads and I guess
- 1:49:08Speaker 2: somehow on their elbows or something.
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: Have to figure out a way to tell when the
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: player touches down on the ground and where the ball
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: is simultaneously right and on first touch of the ground right.
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: So off side in soccer is a two point equation
- 1:49:21Speaker 2: and football it's a three point equation. Yeah, so they're
- 1:49:24Speaker 2: spotting the balls are three.
- 1:49:25Speaker 1: They have worked on technology with chipping the ball. Yeah,
- 1:49:29Speaker 1: it is not. It's proprietary. It's not public yet right
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: uh And as of right now, my at least little
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: bit of understanding on it is that it's not there yet.
- 1:49:39Speaker 2: Well, because again, knowing where the ball is is only
- 1:49:44Speaker 2: as good as the spot.
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: Right, So they can spot the ball.
- 1:49:49Speaker 2: They can say here's where the first down is, here's
- 1:49:51Speaker 2: where the ball is spotted. We're gonna measure it down
- 1:49:53Speaker 2: to a nano media you see if it's first down,
- 1:49:55Speaker 2: But if the ball's spotted incorrectly, what does it matter?
- 1:49:58Speaker 10: How?
- 1:49:58Speaker 2: What does it matter? How act or you can make
- 1:50:00Speaker 2: that measurement. It's the spotting of the ball that they
- 1:50:03Speaker 2: need to fix. And that one's gonna be hard because
- 1:50:05Speaker 2: there's just too many points involved in doing that.
- 1:50:08Speaker 1: Yeah, they'd have to be able to figure out simultaneously. Again,
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: when is a guy down right? And where is the
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: ball when the guy is first down?
- 1:50:15Speaker 2: And it's tough because you could put the sensor in
- 1:50:17Speaker 2: the knee pad and yeah, that maybe they should do
- 1:50:20Speaker 2: that in a work. Ninety percent of the time, you're
- 1:50:22Speaker 2: always gonna have those weird plays. What if his elbow
- 1:50:24Speaker 2: touches first, what if his ass touches first? Whatever? Where Like?
- 1:50:27Speaker 2: Are you gonna just have these guys censor to all hell? Like?
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: Yeah, the only way that you could do it, I suppose,
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: is with video where they could go frame by frame
- 1:50:36Speaker 1: and Okay, his elbow touches down here right, the chip
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: and the ball is telling us at this point the
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: ball is on there, So you could do.
- 1:50:42Speaker 2: That, but again, and that would work for some What
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: about the quarterback sneak where there's like ten guys on
- 1:50:47Speaker 2: top of it, right right, and you can't you can't
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: see it right?
- 1:50:50Speaker 1: Fair enough? All right, This is a question or a
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: statement or whatever from Sean in Vancouver. YEA, the Patriots
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: managed Morgan Moses last year really well and he stayed healthy.
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: Could they take the same approach with Vera Tucker? I
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: think so, Yeah, I think they could. You know, Moses
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: and I expect him to fully be on this this offseas,
- 1:51:08Speaker 1: especially with Lomu in this training camp. I should say,
- 1:51:11Speaker 1: with Lomo wanting to get him reps, I absolutely think
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: that Moses is gonna be on a very strict pitch
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: count in team drills in full eleven on eleven's. I
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: think they could do something similar with Vera Tucker based
- 1:51:24Speaker 1: off of the spring. I remember him saying or someone
- 1:51:27Speaker 1: saying reporting that he actually asked to have the reins
- 1:51:31Speaker 1: taken off a little bit. He wanted more reps as
- 1:51:33Speaker 1: his spring war on. So we'll see where that lands.
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: But yeah, that's absolutely possible. I think that they've had
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: a pretty decent track record of knowing when to manage
- 1:51:43Speaker 1: guys this staff. It's only been one year. But I
- 1:51:46Speaker 1: think last year they kind of for the most part,
- 1:51:49Speaker 1: they did a really good job of that with ventering guys,
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: whether it was Moses or Hunter, Henry had his days off.
- 1:51:56Speaker 1: Harrab Landry obviously was managed all season long. Like, I
- 1:51:59Speaker 1: think they did a some job of that type of stuff.
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: I expect that to continue.
- 1:52:03Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:52:04Speaker 2: By the way, you want a quick update here? Sure,
- 1:52:07Speaker 2: bottom of the first four nothing red Sox, no way.
- 1:52:10Speaker 2: Jared Duranda just ripped a triple h who had the
- 1:52:12Speaker 2: other RB?
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: I think was what is happening with this team? Maybe
- 1:52:18Speaker 1: this was just the movie. Yeah, But in Moneyball when
- 1:52:21Speaker 1: they're about to break the record for the longest winning streak,
- 1:52:24Speaker 1: didn't they have like a ten to nothing lead and
- 1:52:26Speaker 1: they almost blew it or something like that.
- 1:52:28Speaker 2: I forget. I haven't seen that a why.
- 1:52:30Speaker 1: I don't know if that's what happened in real life,
- 1:52:32Speaker 1: but I'm like ninety nine percent sure that's what happened
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: in the movie. As you can imagine, I was a
- 1:52:36Speaker 1: big fan of that movie.
- 1:52:37Speaker 2: I was Durbin who had the other RB. I s
- 1:52:39Speaker 2: Durbin than there are two outs, but.
- 1:52:42Speaker 1: Some people tell you that the same war as Alex Berman,
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: I don't know if you've heard that.
- 1:52:45Speaker 2: Oh, you know, you think I'm gonna use war What
- 1:52:48Speaker 2: do you really think I'm gonna use war? It's base
- 1:52:51Speaker 2: at least do ops that?
- 1:52:53Speaker 1: But that's you heard Tom Warner say that? Did you not?
- 1:52:56Speaker 2: Oh I missed that. Oh yeah, it's on your station.
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, put it on repeat.
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: Give me a back ride home. All right, this is
- 1:53:05Speaker 1: from James. I'm a long time listener and fan of
- 1:53:08Speaker 1: the show. Thank you from Ireland. I want to ask
- 1:53:10Speaker 1: about the kick return position for the upcoming season. It
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: strikes me that none of the guys like to be
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: back there, back in the row. Let me try that again.
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: It strikes me that none of the guys likely to
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: be at the back end of the roster at wide receiver,
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: running back fit the prototype for an NFL kick returner,
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: given the increase importance to the kick returner and the
- 1:53:31Speaker 1: fact that you two have them out there is okay. Yeah,
- 1:53:34Speaker 1: So basically he's saying, you know, who do we think
- 1:53:37Speaker 1: is going to be the kick returner? And do you
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: agree with his premise that none of them really fitted
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: the prototype of it.
- 1:53:42Speaker 2: Kyle Williams kind of does, but for the most part, no,
- 1:53:45Speaker 2: I would agree with that. Most of their guys don't,
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: which again, does it reach love of importance or maybe
- 1:53:51Speaker 2: they bring somebody in So.
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: The one guy that I would mention or maybe two
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: one specifically, I do think jam Miller kind of fits
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: the prototype. Yeah a little, but like a four or
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: five running back that's got good.
- 1:54:02Speaker 2: He's four or five speedo. I know we've ran a
- 1:54:04Speaker 2: four or five, but I was surprised by that.
- 1:54:06Speaker 1: I don't know. I think he's got some juice. Okay,
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: I think he does fit the prototype of it a
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: little bit, but I don't know if it's enough for
- 1:54:12Speaker 1: him to make the roster, you know, like that that's different.
- 1:54:15Speaker 1: But I do think he's got a little bit of juice.
- 1:54:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm gonna throw this out there, getting two. Does
- 1:54:20Speaker 2: Jeremiah Webb somehow sneak in some games, even as a
- 1:54:22Speaker 2: practice squad elevation returning kicks or do they add some
- 1:54:25Speaker 2: maybe maybe none of the three running back none of
- 1:54:27Speaker 2: the third running back candidates pop and they're like, let's
- 1:54:30Speaker 2: go get somebody who can return kicks.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: Yeah, Mark is in Connecticut? What's up?
- 1:54:34Speaker 13: Mark?
- 1:54:36Speaker 10: Hey, guys?
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: How you guys doing great?
- 1:54:38Speaker 8: Alex? I was just about to say it was for
- 1:54:40Speaker 8: it to nothing red stots that you took that one.
- 1:54:42Speaker 10: That was good.
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: I'm falling.
- 1:54:44Speaker 8: Yeah, that's right. So I'm totally not understanding this whole
- 1:54:50Speaker 8: gay Baccus situation. Why he's unsigned, why he's having procedures
- 1:54:56Speaker 8: done after this. I mean, we we went up in
- 1:54:59Speaker 8: the draft, used to me a lot of draft capital
- 1:55:02Speaker 8: to get this guy, and now he's, you know, maybe
- 1:55:05Speaker 8: gonna be red shirted, not even be on the team.
- 1:55:07Speaker 8: I mean, I'm just really nervous and confused on that
- 1:55:11Speaker 8: whole situation. And if that is going to be the case,
- 1:55:14Speaker 8: why hasn't Mike gone out and got like a jv
- 1:55:17Speaker 8: On Clowney, who.
- 1:55:17Speaker 15: He's familiar with, I believe.
- 1:55:19Speaker 9: Is he still out there guys?
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 1:55:21Speaker 2: Yeah, So you know, what.
- 1:55:25Speaker 8: Is the reasoning for that? Why he hasn't you know,
- 1:55:27Speaker 8: like I think you guys are saying at the beginning
- 1:55:29Speaker 8: of the show, why haven't we shirt up with a
- 1:55:31Speaker 8: veteran guy presidence, you know, to get that resolved? And
- 1:55:35Speaker 8: are you guys going to be a training camp on Sunday?
- 1:55:37Speaker 2: Oh yeah, oh yeah, there, We'll be there every day, guys.
- 1:55:41Speaker 8: Hope to see you guys.
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: There sounds good Mark, Well, give us a shout. Well
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: we'll come say hi.
- 1:55:46Speaker 2: Absolutely, thanks, thanks for the call, appreciate it.
- 1:55:49Speaker 1: Yeah, look, it's a fair, fair criticism. It's a fair call.
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: With Actus, I think it's so hard to tell because
- 1:55:57Speaker 1: since he's not under contract, they can't him on any
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: of the lists, So we don't know if he's healthy.
- 1:56:02Speaker 1: We don't know if it's health related, contract related, a
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: combination of the both things. It's a weird situation.
- 1:56:08Speaker 16: Now.
- 1:56:09Speaker 1: The one thing I can say, and it's a press
- 1:56:11Speaker 1: conference and we'll see how truthful he is. But Mike
- 1:56:14Speaker 1: Raywel will talk on Friday. I would imagine it's one
- 1:56:16Speaker 1: of the first questions he's gonna get asked. Is Gonzales,
- 1:56:19Speaker 1: acis Landry, all the above, And we'll see what he
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: has to say about where they're at right now with Akis.
- 1:56:25Speaker 1: This is just my opinion, just you know, my conjecture
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: of it. It feels to me like there was an
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: injury that happened at some point in the process that
- 1:56:35Speaker 1: they were late to catch or something along those lines
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: that happened after the draft, and that I think is
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: what is the whole situation comes back to.
- 1:56:45Speaker 2: I don't think they would have drafted him knowing there
- 1:56:47Speaker 2: was something that would prevent them from signing the contract.
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think it was the hamstring, because they
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: knew about that. The whole league knew about that. Mike
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: Ree's had some reporting about maybe a knee thing, like
- 1:56:57Speaker 1: a cleanup or something like that that he might have
- 1:56:59Speaker 1: had to get done. Whatever the case may be. Something
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: to me transpired from the day of the second day
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: of the draft, the night of the second round when
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: they drafted the kid to now, and that's why we're here.
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: And my guess is is that they're haggling over The
- 1:57:17Speaker 1: Patriots probably want to put some protection in terms of
- 1:57:19Speaker 1: guaranteed money on the contract. Achis obviously wants to get
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: it close to one hundred percent guaranteed as he possibly can.
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: The Patriots are probably saying, well, you're hurt, or you
- 1:57:29Speaker 1: had a procedure, or whatever the case may be, and
- 1:57:32Speaker 1: here we are. We'll see, you know, they have a
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: couple of days to get it done before training camp
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: and we'll find out. But I don't know if we're
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: ever going to truly find out what exactly happened. But
- 1:57:43Speaker 1: something happened. We knew, that's all. That's all I can
- 1:57:47Speaker 1: tell you. I don't have any much more than that.
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: All right, So tomorrow Patriots Unfiltered back at twelve to
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: two tomorrow, what do you do? And you've got a
- 1:57:55Speaker 1: million things going on, I'm sure.
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: I'm doing an episode of the Patriots Hub podcast. Now,
- 1:58:00Speaker 2: that's all today. It's our first show back since the spring. Nice,
- 1:58:03Speaker 2: So we'll kind of, you know, run through our thoughts
- 1:58:07Speaker 2: going into camp, and then we'll have another episode on
- 1:58:08Speaker 2: Friday after Rabel talks.
- 1:58:10Speaker 1: So on this show, Catch twenty two. Next Wednesday is
- 1:58:13Speaker 1: actually conveniently the first off day of training camp in
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: terms of practice, So we're going to be twelve to
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: two still next Wednesday, and we'll recap the first five
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: days of training camp. So we'll have plenty to talk about.
- 1:58:25Speaker 1: Oh yeah, plenty to talk about. So we'll see you
- 1:58:27Speaker 1: guys next week on Catch twenty two from twelve to
- 1:58:30Speaker 1: two tomorrow, pu same time as always. We'll see you
- 1:58:33Speaker 1: guys then.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: Bye, Hey, this is Deuce. Thanks for tuning into the show.
