Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, this is Carl Lee with Let's Talk,
• 0:55
Speaker 3: and it's me and the Football Queen today, Lisa Odie.
• 1:01
Speaker 4: We're the only two that made it today. And Lisa
• 1:05
Speaker 4: has a friend that.
• 1:06
Speaker 3: She has on the phone and that we will talk to.
• 1:10
Speaker 3: So Lisa, if you want to introduce and bring him in,
• 1:13
  Speaker 3: go right ahead.
• 1:14
Speaker 5: I would love that.
• 1:15
Speaker 6: Okay, So today we have a special guest and I
• 1:17
Speaker 6: wanted to give a little background information on our friend.
• 1:20
Speaker 6: But he's a former pitcher. Drafted in nineteen ninety one
• 1:24
Speaker 6: in round seven by the Cincinnati Reds. He had a
• 1:27
Speaker 6: career record of fifty seven wins fifty two losses, with
• 1:30
Speaker 6: a four point four to e ra overall in his
• 1:33
Speaker 6: one hundred and seventy six game career. He was also
• 1:36
Speaker 6: a part of the Charleston Wheelers team during his tenure.
• 1:41
Speaker 6: He's originally from Anaheim, California, and now resides in Charleston.
• 1:45
Speaker 6: And here's a little something that I'm going to share,
• 1:47
Speaker 6: And I hope he doesn't mind that I share it
• 1:49
  Speaker 6: because I found.
• 1:50
  Speaker 5: Out about it.
• 1:52
Speaker 6: You go digging, always go digging too far, carl He
• 1:56
Speaker 6: was roommates with Aaron Boone in college. Oh and so
• 2:00
Speaker 6: if you if you're not aware of who he is,
• 2:02
Speaker 6: he's a current baseball manager and a former player with
• 2:05
Speaker 6: the New York Yankees. So, without further ado, I would
• 2:08
Speaker 6: like to introduce Chris Read to the show.
• 2:10
Speaker 7: Hello, Chris, Hey, how are you guys doing doing good?
• 2:14
  Speaker 4: Man?
• 2:15
Speaker 7: So, actually I'll give you a little So Aaron was
• 2:19
Speaker 7: actually we didn't we didn't play together in college. We
• 2:22
Speaker 7: were we played against each other in high school and
• 2:25
Speaker 7: he was at Villa Park High School. I was at
• 2:27
Speaker 7: Catella and so we played on some all star teams together,
• 2:31
Speaker 7: played against each other in high school. And then I
• 2:34
Speaker 7: got drafted to ninety one. He went on to USC oh.
• 2:37
Speaker 5: Okay, so that part was wrong.
• 2:39
Speaker 7: Yeah, then he so then he was drafted by the
• 2:41
Speaker 7: Reds in the third round. I think it was in
• 2:43
Speaker 7: ninety three or ninety four. And then we were we
• 2:47
Speaker 7: were roommates in a ball double a.
• 2:49
Speaker 6: Okay, so you were roommates, not in college, Yeah, just
• 2:53
  Speaker 6: in college.
• 2:54
Speaker 7: Okay, I still talk. I still talk to him, and
• 2:57
  Speaker 7: I said, we've remained friends. He's a little bit hard
• 3:00
Speaker 7: to get a hold of sometimes. Now you got some
• 3:03
Speaker 7: other thing, some other press were pressing issues. But yeah,
• 3:07
Speaker 7: we texted, you know, at least once a month, and yeah,
• 3:10
Speaker 7: still keep in contact.
• 3:11
  Speaker 5: That's great.
• 3:13
  Speaker 4: So so, Chris.
• 3:14
Speaker 3: One of the one of the things that I have
• 3:18
Speaker 3: I think that I find intriguing about sports because have
• 3:23
Speaker 3: played in the NFL and had the opportunity to be drafted.
• 3:28
Speaker 3: When you got drafted, what was it like Because people
• 3:33
Speaker 3: asked that question a lot of times, like what is
• 3:35
Speaker 3: it like to I don't know, I'm assuming that they
• 3:39
  Speaker 3: give you calls.
• 3:40
Speaker 4: They you know, I don't even know how they do it,
• 3:42
Speaker 4: but like, what were you doing? Where were you at?
• 3:46
Speaker 3: How excited were you at that point? I'm taking you
• 3:48
Speaker 3: all the way back to the start.
• 3:50
Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, I know. So obviously, you know, the draft
• 3:53
Speaker 7: back then was you know, we didn't have uh Internet,
• 3:58
Speaker 7: you know, we didn't have that. We I don't think
• 4:00
Speaker 7: we had barely had cell phones at that point. Yeah.
• 4:08
Speaker 7: So so I started being like looked at when I
• 4:11
Speaker 7: was a junior in high school. So I I had,
• 4:14
Speaker 7: you know, spoken to all of the major league teams.
• 4:17
Speaker 7: They watched me pitch, they kind of followed me, and
• 4:21
Speaker 7: it was funny. The only team that I did not
• 4:24
Speaker 7: speak to my senior year was the Cincinnati Ritz. So
• 4:29
Speaker 7: I had, you know, I've spoken to all the scouts, guys,
• 4:33
Speaker 7: National cross checkers would come out and watch, and you know,
• 4:35
Speaker 7: I had meetings with them and they talked came into
• 4:38
Speaker 7: my house and talked to my family, and you know,
• 4:42
Speaker 7: I had ranges everywhere from the fourth round all the
• 4:45
Speaker 7: way to being a draft and follow So I I
• 4:48
Speaker 7: kind of thought, you know, I was there's three days
• 4:50
Speaker 7: in the draft. It was June, second, third, and fourth.
• 4:52
Speaker 7: So I kind of figured, you know, hopefully I was
• 4:55
Speaker 7: going to go through the first day. And so we
• 4:57
Speaker 7: had a party at my house. And I'd be honest
• 4:59
  Speaker 7: with you, I wasn't a big baseball guy like I
• 5:02
Speaker 7: I wanted. I had a couple of college offers to
• 5:04
Speaker 7: play football, and that was kind of my that was
• 5:06
Speaker 7: kind of my love. So I wasn't you know, it
• 5:10
Speaker 7: was of course, it was an exciting time, but that
• 5:13
Speaker 7: was really kind of really what what I wanted to do.
• 5:16
Speaker 7: And so we had a party of my house and uh,
• 5:20
Speaker 7: they called at The draft started at like ten in
• 5:22
Speaker 7: the morning, and I got a call about noon and
• 5:27
Speaker 7: I got the phone and the gentleman said, Hey, this
• 5:30
Speaker 7: is Larry Barton with the Cincinnati Reds. He was my
• 5:33
Speaker 7: he was the scout in the area and we just
• 5:35
Speaker 7: want to let you know we just draft you. And
• 5:37
Speaker 7: I thought it was my buddy, and I hung up.
• 5:47
Speaker 4: You hung up on a scout, I did, I did.
• 5:51
Speaker 7: I thought it was I thought it was my buddy,
• 5:52
Speaker 7: Eric Boyd messing with me. So I hung up and
• 5:57
Speaker 7: they call. They called right back, and Larry's like, Chris, no, no, no, no, no,
• 6:02
Speaker 7: He said, this is Larry. Never from you know, all
• 6:04
  Speaker 7: the game. I hadn't really I hadn't really talked to
• 6:08
Speaker 7: the Reds and he said he, why don't you know
• 6:10
Speaker 7: he drafted in the in the in the seventh round,
• 6:12
Speaker 7: and uh, you know we're going to be out to
• 6:14
Speaker 7: see you know, see you here real soon and negotiate
• 6:17
Speaker 7: your contract and you know, get everything set to go.
• 6:20
Speaker 7: So yeah, so it was kind of a funny little
• 6:25
Speaker 7: a funny little thing that happened there that first day.
• 6:27
Speaker 7: But yeah, obviously, you know, extremely excited and honored just
• 6:30
Speaker 7: to you know, have that opportunity because it's you know,
• 6:34
Speaker 7: it was it was, it was it was just really neat.
• 6:37
  Speaker 4: It was.
• 6:37
Speaker 7: It was fun to get that call and be like,
• 6:39
Speaker 7: oh my gosh, somebody actually does become worth something.
• 6:42
Speaker 3: When when when was the first When was the first
• 6:45
Speaker 3: moment that you actually thought about, Man, I'm going to
• 6:51
Speaker 3: be playing against people that I have watched on TV, Like,
• 6:55
Speaker 3: you know, like when did that come in? Because for like,
• 6:57
Speaker 3: for me, it was like really kind of quick, but
• 7:00
Speaker 3: it was kind of private. I never really wanted to
• 7:04
Speaker 3: say that, like to anybody, but I was like, man, okay,
• 7:07
Speaker 3: so I'm gonna you know, and because you're thinking you're
• 7:09
Speaker 3: making it anyway, you know, there's no there's no fight
• 7:12
Speaker 3: in not making it. And I'm like thinking, man, I'm
• 7:15
Speaker 3: going to be playing against some of these guys and
• 7:18
Speaker 3: I can't even imagine, like, you know this guy or
• 7:21
  Speaker 3: that guy.
• 7:22
Speaker 4: You know, did you go through that process as well?
• 7:26
Speaker 7: Well, yeah, you know, it really hit I mean again,
• 7:28
Speaker 7: it was it was kind of that whirlwind there for
• 7:31
Speaker 7: that first day. And then they came out a day
• 7:34
Speaker 7: later and it was the National cross Checker who was
• 7:36
Speaker 7: Julian Mock at the time, and Larry and then Larry's
• 7:40
Speaker 7: sudden was also a scouting and Jeff and they all
• 7:43
Speaker 7: three came out to my house and it was at
• 7:45
Speaker 7: that point when they like laid all this stuff out
• 7:47
Speaker 7: on the table and you know, the headings on all
• 7:50
Speaker 7: the papers sitting down your red uh, you know, a congratulation,
• 7:55
Speaker 7: you know, a letter for Marge shot whether you what
• 7:59
Speaker 7: you think of her.
• 8:00
  Speaker 6: You know.
• 8:02
Speaker 7: So I think that's kind of when it really hit me,
• 8:05
  Speaker 7: because you know, growing up, I wasn't again, I wasn't
• 8:07
Speaker 7: a huge baseball guy. Like I played baseball just because
• 8:10
Speaker 7: it was fun and I enjoyed it and I've had
• 8:14
Speaker 7: a good time being out there with my buddies, so
• 8:17
Speaker 7: I wasn't like a kid that avidly watched baseball every
• 8:20
Speaker 7: night on TV and went to five hundred Angel games.
• 8:24
  Speaker 8: You know.
• 8:24
Speaker 7: I just it just wasn't a huge part of my life.
• 8:27
Speaker 7: So I didn't really know a whole lot about like
• 8:32
Speaker 7: a lot. I mean, you knew the big names, right,
• 8:33
Speaker 7: the Ken Griffis and and then I again when I
• 8:37
Speaker 7: saw that stuff on the table and I'm like and
• 8:39
Speaker 7: then they brought out my contract. I think that's kind
• 8:42
Speaker 7: of when it hit and I was like, oh man,
• 8:44
Speaker 7: this is real. I don't know a lot about the
• 8:48
Speaker 7: Cincinnati red but I mean.
• 8:50
Speaker 5: You're about to find out that I heard.
• 8:53
Speaker 7: Them guy guy played for them called Pete Rose I
• 8:57
Speaker 7: think bitchy. But yeah, that was probably the first time
• 9:02
Speaker 7: it really hit me, is when I when you know,
• 9:04
Speaker 7: they were there and I got to see you know
• 9:06
Speaker 7: everything you know that was that was Cincinnati Reds, and
• 9:09
Speaker 7: they started talking about the money piece and all their stuff,
• 9:11
Speaker 7: and it was like, wow, this is really. I was
• 9:14
Speaker 7: seventeen at the time.
• 9:15
  Speaker 5: That's crazy, you're a baby.
• 9:17
Speaker 7: Yeah, my parents both sided my first contract. If it
• 9:20
Speaker 7: wasn't eighteen years old.
• 9:21
Speaker 5: Ye oh wow, oh that amazing.
• 9:24
Speaker 6: Hey, hey, listen, Chris, I was. I was reading some
• 9:26
Speaker 6: of the bio that you had sent me earlier, and
• 9:29
Speaker 6: I know that you participated in at least five big
• 9:34
Speaker 6: league spring training camps.
• 9:36
Speaker 5: So so walk us through that. What was that like
• 9:39
  Speaker 5: for you?
• 9:40
Speaker 7: Yeah, so that's so, you know, like we were in
• 9:42
Speaker 7: plant City at the time. That's where our spring training
• 9:45
Speaker 7: contracts was, and you got you know, you have the
• 9:47
Speaker 7: big clubhouse and on the left hand side of the
• 9:49
Speaker 7: minor league guys, and then you got the offices in
• 9:51
Speaker 7: the middle and you got the big league clubhouse on
• 9:54
Speaker 7: the other side. So, you know, my first couple of years,
• 9:56
Speaker 7: I went to to minor league camp and that starts
• 9:59
Speaker 7: a little bit later. You know, the big guys usually
• 10:02
Speaker 7: get there, you know, mid February. Minor league camp doesn't
• 10:05
Speaker 7: start until first week in March typically, And so that's
• 10:10
Speaker 7: my first couple of years. I think my first big
• 10:12
Speaker 7: league spring training was ninety five. So that was really
• 10:16
Speaker 7: that was really cool because I got to go down
• 10:17
Speaker 7: there early, obviously overwhelmed my Jose Rijo's in there and
• 10:21
Speaker 7: very lark and you know these guys are all you know,
• 10:25
Speaker 7: the Don Gullett, I mean, all these you know, the
• 10:28
Speaker 7: name George Foster and all these guys you see in
• 10:30
Speaker 7: the clubhouse and you're like, oh my gosh. So that
• 10:33
Speaker 7: that was that was that was a real eye opening
• 10:36
Speaker 7: experience for that that first big league camp, I think
• 10:39
Speaker 7: I only lasted about two weeks and they sent me
• 10:42
Speaker 7: back down. They'd seen enough like that, you're not going
• 10:48
Speaker 7: to be a part of the Cincinnati Reads this year,
• 10:51
Speaker 7: but you know, well we'll keep you up. But anyway,
• 10:55
Speaker 7: so yeah, so did that and then I was invited
• 10:58
Speaker 7: the next four years and I stayed a little bit
• 11:01
Speaker 7: longer every time. But you know, it just comes down
• 11:05
Speaker 7: to it, Uh yeah, I just wasn't good enough to maintain.
• 11:09
Speaker 6: Yeah, to get to that level and maintain and it's
• 11:12
Speaker 6: that's that's got to be difficult.
• 11:13
Speaker 3: But but but I think, but I think though in baseball,
• 11:18
  Speaker 3: like I think it's it's more challenging too, because there's
• 11:24
Speaker 3: so many skill sets that you have to have. Like
• 11:27
Speaker 3: you know, in football, you know, if you can tackle,
• 11:29
Speaker 3: if you can throw, if you can do this, you
• 11:32
Speaker 3: you kind of got a good shot. I think baseball,
• 11:36
Speaker 3: you you have like a ton of different things that
• 11:39
Speaker 3: you actually have to do and and and I think
• 11:43
Speaker 3: that to me is is the huge challenge, what was
• 11:46
Speaker 3: your what was your best skill set? What do you
• 11:48
Speaker 3: think was your best skill set when it came down
• 11:50
  Speaker 3: to to baseball?
• 11:52
Speaker 4: And and why, you.
• 11:55
  Speaker 7: Know, I just I mean, I'm just I'm a poor loser.
• 12:00
  Speaker 2: I don't.
• 12:02
Speaker 7: Guest. I don't care if it's darts with my you know,
• 12:08
Speaker 7: ten year old son. You know, I'm spiking the ball
• 12:12
Speaker 7: when I beat him. So yeah, I'm I think just
• 12:16
Speaker 7: being just over the top competitive. Always, always was just
• 12:21
Speaker 7: trying to get better. I didn't have like the most
• 12:23
Speaker 7: talent obviously out there, but just you know, like you said,
• 12:27
Speaker 7: just try to do the little things make you stand out,
• 12:30
Speaker 7: you know, just work hard, you know, on and off
• 12:34
Speaker 7: the field. Just in the weight room, first in the morning,
• 12:38
Speaker 7: last one out. Just show them that you're fully vested
• 12:42
Speaker 7: in the in the process that goes a long way.
• 12:44
Speaker 7: That'll carry you so far obviously, yeah, the first guy in,
• 12:48
Speaker 7: the last guy out, and you're throwing eighty miles an hour,
• 12:50
Speaker 7: probably not going to be around for a long but yeah,
• 12:53
Speaker 7: work ethic. And I just think that, like I said,
• 12:55
Speaker 7: the overall competitiveness of what I do, and I carry
• 12:58
Speaker 7: it over today into my work life. I just I
• 13:01
Speaker 7: just want to be I mean, I want to be
• 13:02
Speaker 7: the best. What what what I what I'm doing and
• 13:04
Speaker 7: it doesn't matter what it is.
• 13:06
Speaker 4: See and and one of the things.
• 13:08
Speaker 3: That I it drives me crazy is is that like
• 13:13
Speaker 3: people who are in sports, people who have played it
• 13:16
Speaker 3: at a high level, had opportunities to play it at
• 13:20
Speaker 3: a high level, when when you talk to them, you
• 13:24
Speaker 3: hear the same thing, you know, like this commitment and
• 13:27
Speaker 3: this work ethic and and and I'm just I just
• 13:33
Speaker 3: have a feeling that I don't see that today in
• 13:38
Speaker 3: some of the athletes who want to be great.
• 13:41
Speaker 4: You can you can you can tell.
• 13:44
Speaker 3: They want to be this, this, this player, They want
• 13:46
Speaker 3: to be this, they want to get a D one scholarship,
• 13:49
Speaker 3: they want to get to the pros, they want to
• 13:50
Speaker 3: do all these kind of things. But they're they're at
• 13:54
Speaker 3: practice playing the game. At practice playing the game. There's
• 14:01
Speaker 3: no off season that they're putting in time, their own time,
• 14:05
Speaker 3: their own commitment into being whatever that is, football, basketball, baseball, track,
• 14:09
Speaker 3: whatever that is, a business person, whatever that is. You've
• 14:14
Speaker 3: gotta there's got to be a place in there where
• 14:17
Speaker 3: there is that you have to be extra. You have
• 14:20
Speaker 3: to put that extra in.
• 14:22
Speaker 7: I agree, and I think the times that have changed
• 14:25
Speaker 7: now is you know, when back when I was growing
• 14:28
Speaker 7: up and going through you know, little league, high school whatever,
• 14:32
Speaker 7: you know, we had we had seasons. So I didn't
• 14:34
Speaker 7: put all man and went back.
• 14:35
  Speaker 8: I didn't.
• 14:35
Speaker 7: I didn't just play baseball, you know, I played football.
• 14:38
Speaker 7: I played baseball. I had downtime when I could just
• 14:40
Speaker 7: go outside and play you know, basketball and the driveway
• 14:43
Speaker 7: with my friends. And I think that's the big difference too,
• 14:46
Speaker 7: is I think a lot of these kids nowadays, obviously
• 14:49
Speaker 7: all the travel ball and they're playing year round, and
• 14:52
  Speaker 7: I think it's too much. There's it's just it's too much.
• 14:54
Speaker 7: Like I said, I think kids get burnt out. And
• 14:57
Speaker 7: I always say this. I think the bigges problem with
• 15:00
Speaker 7: professional baseball was when they started publishing the bonus numbers, right,
• 15:07
Speaker 7: so it's it's not always the kid, but when mom
• 15:09
Speaker 7: and dad see that so and so out of high
• 15:11
Speaker 7: school signed for nine million dollars and a big league contract,
• 15:15
Speaker 7: I think there's a lot of pressure from the you know,
• 15:19
Speaker 7: from the parents to push these kids to something that
• 15:22
Speaker 7: you know, they may want the other interests. They're gonna
• 15:25
Speaker 7: get burned out, like I've seen it, and I'll coach
• 15:27
Speaker 7: my kids, you know, little league team, and even at
• 15:30
Speaker 7: ten eleven years old, some of these kids they don't
• 15:33
Speaker 7: want to be out there, but it's because their parents
• 15:35
Speaker 7: and they've got them doing pitching lessons and hitting lessons
• 15:37
Speaker 7: and all of this other stuff for kids that are like,
• 15:40
Speaker 7: you know, the world needs tu but players too, And
• 15:43
Speaker 7: that's the reality of it, right, And I think I
• 15:47
Speaker 7: think a lot of it today again stems from the parent.
• 15:52
Speaker 7: The parent piece of it, just push, push, push, push push,
• 15:55
Speaker 7: and then as soon as these kids get old enough
• 15:58
Speaker 7: to make their own decisions, they're like, I don't want
• 16:00
  Speaker 7: to do this anymore. So I think it's there's a
• 16:02
Speaker 7: there's a very fine line between you know, kids. I
• 16:06
Speaker 7: think every kid that you go out in the little
• 16:08
Speaker 7: league fields if they want to be a major league
• 16:09
Speaker 7: baseball player. But that's just not reality, you know. Like
• 16:13
Speaker 7: I said, it's not and again I think you said
• 16:16
Speaker 7: it perfectly. It's not always just the talent piece of it.
• 16:18
Speaker 7: It's just the commitment piece of it. But I think
• 16:21
Speaker 7: because they're getting so much of it early on, that
• 16:25
Speaker 7: they just lose that commitment piece because they're just burned out.
• 16:29
Speaker 7: I heard of doing it too.
• 16:30
  Speaker 4: Much.
• 16:30
Speaker 3: And and I know, I go back and I and
• 16:33
Speaker 3: I look at the work that I put in. If
• 16:37
Speaker 3: you go back and you look at the work that
• 16:39
Speaker 3: you put in. I don't know if you played travel
• 16:43
Speaker 3: baseball or any of that kind of stuff, but a
• 16:45
Speaker 3: lot of times you were spending time on your own.
• 16:48
Speaker 3: You were running, you were lifting, you were trying to
• 16:50
Speaker 3: get stronger, you were trying to get faster, you were
• 16:52
Speaker 3: trying to just do all these kind of things.
• 16:55
Speaker 4: Yeah, on your own.
• 16:57
Speaker 3: That that that benefited you going where I think now,
• 17:02
Speaker 3: I think they think more games is better, you know.
• 17:05
Speaker 3: And I think that that goes for the travel all
• 17:08
  Speaker 3: the travel sports.
• 17:08
  Speaker 4: I think they.
• 17:09
Speaker 3: Believe that if we play six games more, that's gonna
• 17:15
  Speaker 3: give you experience.
• 17:15
Speaker 4: You don't get experience playing the game. You get, you know,
• 17:20
  Speaker 4: the experience that.
• 17:21
Speaker 3: You need to to be able to play at the
• 17:25
Speaker 3: next level is you need to be in shape, you
• 17:27
Speaker 3: need to be strong, you need to do.
• 17:28
Speaker 4: All those kind of things.
• 17:30
Speaker 3: Yeah, and I think that we're stuck in You know,
• 17:34
Speaker 3: somebody scored forty points you know, on a on a
• 17:37
Speaker 3: on a travel game against a team that's supposed to
• 17:39
Speaker 3: be the number one team in the country. We want
• 17:43
Speaker 3: to we want to celebrate him and think he's gonna
• 17:46
Speaker 3: do something, and that's not a guarantee.
• 17:49
Speaker 7: Yeah, absolutely, I think you know, in sports in general now,
• 17:52
Speaker 7: you know, professional baseball, you know, six months, seven months,
• 17:56
Speaker 7: and if you play on the West Coast for the
• 17:57
Speaker 7: Yankee or the Dodgers, the Yankees just even a little
• 18:00
Speaker 7: bit longer usually, But it's a year round sport. I
• 18:03
Speaker 7: mean it's you know, you're you're done, and you maybe
• 18:05
Speaker 7: take a couple of weeks off and then like you said,
• 18:07
Speaker 7: you're right back at it. You know, do a lot
• 18:09
Speaker 7: of running, cardiovascular obviously being a pitcher, a lot of
• 18:13
Speaker 7: cardiovascular you know, weight training, and I think that is
• 18:16
  Speaker 7: improved too. I mean we didn't I think I don't
• 18:18
Speaker 7: remember if we had like strength and conditioning coaches went
• 18:21
Speaker 7: went with with Cincinnati. I mean, Marge was too cheap
• 18:24
Speaker 7: to pay for that. But the seems that actually do
• 18:32
Speaker 7: think as well. You know, their strength and conditioning coaches
• 18:36
Speaker 7: are are you know, having the kid that there are
• 18:38
Speaker 7: top prospects, not bringing down every kid that's in their
• 18:40
Speaker 7: minor league system. But again it's it's a full year
• 18:44
Speaker 7: round workout and then you have all these places training facilities,
• 18:48
Speaker 7: across the country that these that these kids go to
• 18:52
  Speaker 7: and and yeah, it's a it's a it's a full
• 18:54
Speaker 7: time job. It's it's definitely a full time job. And
• 18:57
Speaker 7: I think that's where a lot of it too falls
• 18:59
Speaker 7: up part with younger kids. And again, back when we
• 19:02
Speaker 7: didn't have all of those options, you were you had
• 19:07
Speaker 7: to do it yourself.
• 19:07
Speaker 5: It was intrinsic motivation. It had to be yeah, yeah,
• 19:11
  Speaker 5: it had to.
• 19:11
Speaker 7: Be when and when you're eighteen or nineteen, twenty years
• 19:14
Speaker 7: old and you've been playing for four or five months
• 19:17
Speaker 7: and now you're home with all your buddies, you know,
• 19:20
Speaker 7: there's other priorities in your life.
• 19:22
Speaker 5: So at that age, you're.
• 19:23
Speaker 7: Really yeah, you really have to be committed, unless you're
• 19:28
Speaker 7: just some freak athlete like you know, David Wells who
• 19:32
Speaker 7: looked like a seventy year old You go out there
• 19:37
Speaker 7: and throw after you had twenty seven beers and I.
• 19:41
  Speaker 5: Oh wow wow.
• 19:42
Speaker 7: So yeah, there are those freak ones out there that
• 19:45
Speaker 7: don't have to put in the you know, as much work.
• 19:47
Speaker 7: But I think now today is even worse. I mean,
• 19:51
Speaker 7: to compete today at the professional level or even at
• 19:54
  Speaker 7: the D one level, I mean, it's it's a lot
• 19:57
Speaker 7: of work. I mean, you really have to be committed
• 19:59
  Speaker 7: to do.
• 20:00
Speaker 5: So I'm going to go a different direction here. Chris.
• 20:02
Speaker 6: So, like we said in the bio, you're from Anaheim, California,
• 20:06
Speaker 6: and when you were drafted. You eventually played at two
• 20:09
Speaker 6: levels in West Virginia, correct Princeton and then in Charleston
• 20:13
Speaker 6: with the Wheelers. So tell us about the culture shock.
• 20:16
Speaker 6: What was it like going from California and the weather
• 20:20
Speaker 6: and the and the the cities, the people and coming
• 20:23
  Speaker 6: to West Virginia.
• 20:24
Speaker 5: What was that like?
• 20:25
Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, that was so. I remember I flew
• 20:29
Speaker 7: out of John Wayne Airport that morning. I flew to
• 20:36
Speaker 7: blue Field, Oh, West Virginia. That's where we landed, huge, huge,
• 20:45
Speaker 7: and then drove to Princeton and we had an apartment
• 20:49
Speaker 7: on Mercer Street behind the Harley Davidson.
• 20:52
Speaker 5: Bar So got lots of sleep, crespool, peaceful.
• 20:57
Speaker 7: Oh yeah, like I was my room made. My roommate
• 21:01
Speaker 7: in rookie ball was one of my five because you
• 21:04
Speaker 7: only made, you know, seven dollars a week play it
• 21:07
Speaker 7: played in rookie ball. Uh So, we had five people
• 21:10
Speaker 7: in apartment. Pokey Reefs was one of my roommates who
• 21:13
Speaker 7: was the first round pick that year, played in the
• 21:15
Speaker 7: big leagues for a while, has a couple of World
• 21:17
  Speaker 7: Series rings.
• 21:18
  Speaker 4: Wow.
• 21:19
Speaker 7: But yeah, like that was that was. It was a
• 21:22
Speaker 7: huge culture shock and then just the people it was.
• 21:25
Speaker 7: You go into games and it was a different crowd
• 21:29
Speaker 7: than I was used to play in California coming to
• 21:31
Speaker 7: those games, but I loved it. I think it was fantastic.
• 21:35
Speaker 7: It was a great experience. Princeton was a short because
• 21:39
Speaker 7: it was short season rookie, so it was right after
• 21:41
Speaker 7: I was drafted. I went there. I was only played
• 21:43
Speaker 7: in Princeton that season was only three months, two and
• 21:47
Speaker 7: a half, three months long, and then came home, went
• 21:51
Speaker 7: back for spring train the next year, and then they
• 21:53
Speaker 7: you know, they sent me to I went to Billings
• 21:54
Speaker 7: after that, which was high rookie ball, and then the
• 21:59
Speaker 7: following year I went I came to Charleston and it
• 22:03
Speaker 7: was it was fantastic, Like I met seventy good people.
• 22:07
Speaker 7: People again obviously still keep in contact with today and
• 22:10
Speaker 7: see on a pretty normal basis, But it was, it was,
• 22:15
Speaker 7: it was, It was a really it was a step up,
• 22:17
Speaker 7: right like every time you get moved from you know,
• 22:20
Speaker 7: low rookie ball the high rookie ball, they've all the
• 22:22
Speaker 7: cities get a little bit bigger, you get treated a
• 22:26
Speaker 7: little bit better, you're not eating peanut butter and jelly,
• 22:28
Speaker 7: and you're still still having to ride the bus for
• 22:33
Speaker 7: fifteen hours. So that was a little bit of a drawback,
• 22:36
Speaker 7: But yeah, it was. It was a real culture shock
• 22:39
Speaker 7: from going to where I was thinking I was going
• 22:41
Speaker 7: to go play for the actual Cincinnati read I got
• 22:45
Speaker 7: to go start some point.
• 22:46
  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a long way.
• 22:48
  Speaker 3: From there, Chris, I have I have a question. I
• 22:52
Speaker 3: don't have any idea of how you may answer this
• 22:56
Speaker 3: or even if this is something that could be answered. Actually,
• 23:01
Speaker 3: why is baseball okay? Like you said you started you
• 23:06
Speaker 3: basically went in the baseball professional baseball.
• 23:12
Speaker 7: At how old seventeen?
• 23:15
Speaker 3: Like there's no other sport, there's no really any other
• 23:19
Speaker 3: sport that actually takes because you're still a kid at
• 23:22
Speaker 3: that point and you're you're trying and you're competing against
• 23:26
  Speaker 3: legitimately grown men.
• 23:29
Speaker 4: Right, why and how is that? How does that work?
• 23:33
  Speaker 7: Like?
• 23:33
Speaker 4: Like what do you like, what are you thinking at seventeen?
• 23:35
Speaker 3: I get drafted, I'm I'm twenty one, twenty twenty one,
• 23:40
Speaker 3: something like that, and so I'm I'm pretty you know,
• 23:44
Speaker 3: I've gone through college and all that, so I have
• 23:47
Speaker 3: an awareness of me and what's actually happening at seventeen.
• 23:52
Speaker 4: Like do you really even know what the whole process
• 23:55
Speaker 4: is going to take? What is like? What is that like?
• 24:00
Speaker 7: Tell you it's uh, it was interesting. It was like,
• 24:04
Speaker 7: you know, you go in high school and I had
• 24:05
Speaker 7: a pretty successful high school career, and so you're you know,
• 24:09
Speaker 7: you're the big fish and right in the little, little
• 24:11
Speaker 7: little pond, and then all of a sudden, you get
• 24:14
Speaker 7: to where everybody else here has been drafted or you know,
• 24:17
Speaker 7: signed free agent or whatever. Now you're a minnow in
• 24:20
Speaker 7: the ocean. You realize, yeah, you realize you're just not
• 24:26
Speaker 7: as good as you think you are, because you know
• 24:29
Speaker 7: the talent of the people you're playing against where the
• 24:32
Speaker 7: all stars of they're all stars, you know, they're they're
• 24:34
Speaker 7: the they were the cream of the crop from you know,
• 24:38
Speaker 7: Texas or Florida, whatever it may be. So there is
• 24:41
Speaker 7: a there's an eye opening effect. I'm in my first
• 24:44
Speaker 7: couple of games. The balls that I throw in high
• 24:47
Speaker 7: school that just drip people out. They were hitting five
• 24:50
Speaker 7: hundred feet over the left field fence and I was
• 24:52
Speaker 7: just didn't under in the ninth batter in the lineup,
• 24:54
Speaker 7: and like, what is going on? You really have to
• 24:58
Speaker 7: you really have to make a lot of an adjustment.
• 25:01
Speaker 7: But you're right, you know, I play against the kids
• 25:03
Speaker 7: that were out of college, but I always just kind
• 25:07
Speaker 7: of text solace in my thought process was well, if
• 25:10
Speaker 7: you're twenty two years old and you're still in rookie ball,
• 25:13
Speaker 7: I should be able to handle you.
• 25:15
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 25:15
Speaker 5: There you go. A good players like that.
• 25:17
  Speaker 4: Good thought.
• 25:19
Speaker 6: Hey, Chris, I've got one last question and then we'll
• 25:21
Speaker 6: let you go. We appreciate you being on with us tonight.
• 25:24
Speaker 6: But what advice would you give to young upcoming players
• 25:29
Speaker 6: that are trying to make it to the show? What
• 25:31
Speaker 6: are some things that they and I love saying the show,
• 25:34
Speaker 6: I feel like I'm on Bulderrham or something. You know,
• 25:37
Speaker 6: I feel like I know baseball now. I feel like
• 25:39
Speaker 6: I'm so knowledgeable on it. But anyway, let's go back
• 25:42
Speaker 6: to the question. So what are some things that you would,
• 25:45
Speaker 6: you know, tell these young players. What are some things
• 25:48
Speaker 6: that they can do to if they want to, you
• 25:50
Speaker 6: know level, what are some things that they should be doing?
• 25:52
  Speaker 4: Now?
• 25:53
Speaker 7: Well, I think I said before, do you seem to
• 25:57
Speaker 7: have a balance in their life. Okay, you can't because
• 26:00
Speaker 7: and I'll give you a real quick little story when
• 26:02
Speaker 7: I when I coach my son's little league team, ten
• 26:05
Speaker 7: eleven twelve year olds, you know, I would have a
• 26:07
Speaker 7: team meeting with the parents and everybody, you know, the
• 26:09
Speaker 7: first night, and the first thing I would say is,
• 26:11
Speaker 7: you know, you have a five twenty nine plan, because
• 26:14
Speaker 7: you know, the chance of your your kid playing college
• 26:17
Speaker 7: baseball is not real high. And that's your chance of
• 26:21
Speaker 7: your your child playing professional baseball is probably, you know,
• 26:25
Speaker 7: substantially less than that. So you know, let's put things
• 26:29
Speaker 7: in perspective. If you're talented enough to play at a
• 26:33
Speaker 7: higher level, they'll find you. I don't care if you
• 26:35
Speaker 7: live in Princeton, West Virginia, or you know wherever. If
• 26:39
Speaker 7: you're the cream rises to the top. So I think kids,
• 26:43
Speaker 7: especially in West Virginia, you know, they always see it
• 26:45
Speaker 7: as the disadvantage because they come from such a small town.
• 26:48
Speaker 7: But I tell you what, doesn't take a lot to
• 26:49
Speaker 7: get noticed when you're in a smaller town because they're
• 26:51
Speaker 7: scouts everywhere. There's scout every game that you don't even
• 26:54
Speaker 7: know about it, especially there no go ahead.
• 26:57
  Speaker 5: I'm sorry.
• 26:57
Speaker 6: I was just gonna say it, especially in this day
• 26:59
Speaker 6: and age of social media. I mean, you know, you
• 27:01
Speaker 6: don't have to be there in person to discover the
• 27:04
  Speaker 6: talent anymore.
• 27:05
Speaker 5: It's not like that.
• 27:06
Speaker 7: And they might not even be there to see you, right,
• 27:08
Speaker 7: they might be looking at one of your teammate or
• 27:10
Speaker 7: whatever it may be. So I said, just you know,
• 27:13
Speaker 7: but have a balanced life. You know, go play baseball,
• 27:17
Speaker 7: but do other things too, Like, don't don't just solely
• 27:19
Speaker 7: focus on that, because I think it's like anything else
• 27:21
Speaker 7: in life is if that's all you have in your mind,
• 27:24
Speaker 7: that's all you want to do, and then you know,
• 27:26
  Speaker 7: something doesn't happen. I mean there's obviously a huge amount
• 27:29
Speaker 7: of disappointment that comes with that, right, And just you know,
• 27:32
Speaker 7: keep an open mind. And again, if you're good enough
• 27:35
Speaker 7: to play at a higher level, I can watch a
• 27:39
Speaker 7: kid run across the field and tell you if he's
• 27:41
Speaker 7: got talent or not. Right, does it take then you
• 27:44
Speaker 7: have to throw ninety five miles an hour? So just yeah,
• 27:48
Speaker 7: I think just you relax, they relaxed, stay focused, like
• 27:52
Speaker 7: keep saying you'll work hard, and uh, yeah, I just don't.
• 27:56
  Speaker 7: I don't think there's a magic potion to to playing
• 28:00
Speaker 7: at a higher level in any sport. I just think it's,
• 28:03
Speaker 7: you know, you gotta work hard, but again, you also
• 28:06
Speaker 7: have to have other things in your life and have
• 28:09
Speaker 7: a back and anything else. Absolutely, education or whatever. You
• 28:15
Speaker 7: have something else in mind too, because you know it
• 28:18
  Speaker 7: is a hard it's a hard road.
• 28:19
Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, good advice.
• 28:20
Speaker 6: All right, Chris, Well, we're gonna let you go, but
• 28:22
Speaker 6: we really appreciate you coming on tonight, and hopefully we'll
• 28:26
Speaker 6: have you come back on in future podcasts.
• 28:29
Speaker 7: That sounds great. I look forward to it. Thank you, guys.
• 28:31
Speaker 3: Okay, thanks christ Now, Okay.
• 28:36
Speaker 6: So, so basically he said, if you want to make
• 28:39
Speaker 6: the show, don't focus on it because the odds are
• 28:43
Speaker 6: probably not in your favor.
• 28:45
Speaker 5: That's what it sounded like to me.
• 28:46
Speaker 3: Yes, yes, and then and I hear and I hear
• 28:50
Speaker 3: that as the as the path to go, right, But
• 28:56
Speaker 3: I was so totally the opposite it. And I think
• 29:00
Speaker 3: it's what drove my mom so crazy, because like I was,
• 29:03
Speaker 3: like I didn't even want to be successful at school, right,
• 29:09
Speaker 3: I wanted to I wanted only football, like I only
• 29:13
Speaker 3: wanted to play football, and and I.
• 29:16
Speaker 5: Mom straightened that out real quick.
• 29:18
Speaker 4: She tried. She really did, she really tried.
• 29:22
Speaker 5: Like she im at the grades part, Carl, I'm.
• 29:24
  Speaker 4: Talking about that.
• 29:28
Speaker 3: I have no problem my first my first semester, my
• 29:32
Speaker 3: first semester at Marshall. You know, I ended up playing
• 29:38
Speaker 3: and doing pretty good, and you know, and all this
• 29:42
Speaker 3: and and I'm thinking I'm on my way. You know,
• 29:44
Speaker 3: this is exactly how I drew this up. To be
• 29:47
Speaker 3: sure class I literally had like a one point six DP.
• 29:54
Speaker 3: Oh my goodness, I get called in by that.
• 29:57
Speaker 5: I would not tell people that.
• 30:00
Speaker 6: I think I would have left that to myself and
• 30:02
Speaker 6: iday honesty policy here.
• 30:04
Speaker 3: I'm not the best I'm not the best example for
• 30:07
Speaker 3: the person who is a student athlete, okay, because I
• 30:12

• 32:08
Speaker 2: back to the conversation.
• 32:12
Speaker 4: You know, right, tide Jersey can be a can be
• 32:13
  Speaker 4: a source subject.
• 32:14
Speaker 10: Not really, This is the first time I ever seen it.
• 32:17
Speaker 10: Sore I got. I don't know if you know it,
• 32:20
Speaker 10: but I'm a tired man. I think every Jersey during
• 32:22
Speaker 10: that played in his return, so I'm pretty familiar with this.
• 32:26
Speaker 10: So it's it's never been sore.
• 32:28
Speaker 4: But why do you think that? What was your message?
• 32:30
  Speaker 3: Like?
• 32:30
Speaker 4: Maybe buff nation and buffalom. Sure, I don't have a message.
• 32:33
Speaker 10: I'm praying for my ID. I love him to life.
• 32:35
Speaker 10: Rick George, let's get to elephant at the rule. I
• 32:37
Speaker 10: don't want to talk about this too long. I'm gonna
• 32:40
Speaker 10: just talk briefly and let it go. We talking about
• 32:43
Speaker 10: your door. We ain't talking about nobody else but his
• 32:47
Speaker 10: last name one Sanders. We wouldn't have discovered this discussion.
• 32:50
Speaker 10: The only reason we were happening this discussion is his
• 32:53
Speaker 10: last name is Sanders.
• 32:56
Speaker 3: Okay, so I at least are like when I when
• 33:02
Speaker 3: I when I heard that, like every everything about that
• 33:09
Speaker 3: came across to me wrong.
• 33:13
Speaker 6: I am going to preference what you just said wrong
• 33:17
Speaker 6: with contradictory. Contradictory because the way, the way that he
• 33:22
Speaker 6: came across during that press conference, as my son is
• 33:27
Speaker 6: being persecuted for having the Sanders name, is the same
• 33:31
Speaker 6: reason that his jersey was retired in the first place. Okay,
• 33:36
Speaker 6: it's because he has the Sanders name. In my opinion,
• 33:39
Speaker 6: just if you look at the statistics of retired jerseys
• 33:44
Speaker 6: and players that have been inducted into their school's hall
• 33:47
Speaker 6: of fame and all of.
• 33:48
  Speaker 5: That, they've waited a while A hot minute. I get
• 33:52
  Speaker 5: to his point.
• 33:53
Speaker 4: I can attest to a ton of players.
• 33:56
Speaker 6: I'm not the one who's sitting in this room right now,
• 34:00
  Speaker 6: right you.
• 34:00
Speaker 3: Know, yes, I mean to me I'm thinking, okay, what
• 34:06
Speaker 3: did he Let's just okay, let's just be honest. When
• 34:09
Speaker 3: you forget where he got drafted, he's going to be
• 34:14
Speaker 3: able to prove that he's NFL caliber once he's once
• 34:18
Speaker 3: he got there. The question becomes, does his statistical effort
• 34:25
Speaker 3: at Colorado sound like something that.
• 34:32
Speaker 4: You would put on the wall you would retire at Jersey.
• 34:36
Speaker 5: Okay, Okay, so I did. I did a little research.
• 34:38
Speaker 6: Imagine that little research today on some of these successes
• 34:44
Speaker 6: that our friend Shador achieved when he was at Colorado
• 34:48
Speaker 6: for two years Colorado Buffalo's Okay. So the obvious ones
• 34:52
Speaker 6: are personal achievements, which you know, he broke and tied
• 34:56
Speaker 6: numerous Colorado passing records during his tenure there. He was
• 35:00
Speaker 6: Big twelve Offensive Player of the Year in twenty twenty four.
• 35:04
Speaker 6: He also won the Johnny Uniteds Golden Arm Award in
• 35:06
Speaker 6: twenty twenty four. In academics, unlike Carl, he maintained a
• 35:11
  Speaker 6: three point.
• 35:11
  Speaker 5: Nine the GPA.
• 35:14
Speaker 6: And then finally you think about his financial successes. He
• 35:18
Speaker 6: had great nil deals with the school, with Google, with Nike.
• 35:23
Speaker 5: Those are some of his achievements.
• 35:24
Speaker 6: Which are all what personal achievements Okay, But then when
• 35:28
Speaker 6: we go to the other side of the coin, which
• 35:30
Speaker 6: to me is the most important part of being a
• 35:33
Speaker 6: retired jersey or part of a retired jersey ceremony or
• 35:38
Speaker 6: being inducted to a school's hall of fame, is what
• 35:40
Speaker 6: did you contribute to the program. And when you look
• 35:43
Speaker 6: at these things, oh yeah, he revived the program to
• 35:47
Speaker 6: a degree. He took them from a struggling team to
• 35:51
Speaker 6: a more competitive His record overall was thirteen and twelve.
• 35:54
Speaker 6: That's a little bit more than fifty percent. Okay, they
• 35:57
Speaker 6: weren't part of any national championship chatter at all during
• 36:01
Speaker 6: his tenure there. In fact, if you want to look
• 36:03
Speaker 6: at it even closer, the bowl game that he did
• 36:06
Speaker 6: go and lead the team to, they got spanked. So
• 36:09
Speaker 6: when you're looking at to me, when you're looking at
• 36:12
Speaker 6: retiring a jersey or giving someone the honors of, you know,
• 36:17
Speaker 6: being elite at their school, you have to not look
• 36:20
Speaker 6: at just personal achievements, but what they contributed to the program.
• 36:25
Speaker 3: And okay, so let me let me let me clarify
• 36:28
Speaker 3: just some just a piece of that. That's the team
• 36:33
Speaker 3: that your team has to You have to take that
• 36:36
  Speaker 3: team somewhere.
• 36:37
Speaker 5: You have to be a leader.
• 36:38
Speaker 4: You have to be a leader. I don't know.
• 36:41
Speaker 3: If I don't know, see my problem with with with
• 36:45
Speaker 3: a lot of the conversation that Chador has had. Okay,
• 36:50
Speaker 3: and then some of the or most of what Dion
• 36:54
Speaker 3: has said. There is no there is no talk about leadership. No,
• 37:00
Speaker 3: there's no talk. What we're talking about is my son.
• 37:05
Speaker 3: I get that, But your your son is now part
• 37:10
Speaker 3: of a team that should be everybody, it should be
• 37:16
Speaker 3: the whole team. Sure, and and what is for the
• 37:19
Speaker 3: what is for the what's for the betterment.
• 37:21
Speaker 4: Of the the entire team?
• 37:23
  Speaker 5: Right?
• 37:24
  Speaker 4: And and I just don't I just don't see.
• 37:27
Speaker 6: I think that was part of his demise in the
• 37:29
Speaker 6: in the draft, to be honest, I think people saw
• 37:32
Speaker 6: that especially and I think clearly the interviews that that
• 37:35
Speaker 6: went on behind closed doors played a huge factor in
• 37:39
Speaker 6: in you know what, he presented his leadership skills to
• 37:42
Speaker 6: those owners and scouts and they didn't like what they saw.
• 37:45
Speaker 3: Well, again, if if you heard that clip and you're
• 37:51
Speaker 3: and you're a scout, you know what, you know.
• 37:54
Speaker 4: What do you what are you thinking? And we're gonna
• 37:56
Speaker 4: We're gonna play another one.
• 37:58
Speaker 3: Just just just to keep this conversation going.
• 38:04
Speaker 10: If that means a lot to me. I'm one of
• 38:05
Speaker 10: those type of guys who I'm gonna tell you how
• 38:07
  Speaker 10: I feel.
• 38:08
Speaker 4: Right off the rip.
• 38:09
Speaker 10: You know, I'm not gonna really wait, so I give
• 38:11
Speaker 10: your flowers now. I'm not gonna wait twenty years down
• 38:13
Speaker 10: the street then bringing you back when you limp into
• 38:16
Speaker 10: the barrier walk because some tragedy happens to recognize your
• 38:19
Speaker 10: greatness and what you contributed to this program. So I'm
• 38:22
Speaker 10: thankful that Rick, you know, shot a shot and moved
• 38:26
Speaker 10: on on what we all know was inevitable in due time.
• 38:31
Speaker 10: You know the time frame. Nobody's gonna be happy with it.
• 38:34
Speaker 10: Somebody's always gonna have something to say. But the way
• 38:36
Speaker 10: we are right now, we are now generation. You guys
• 38:40
Speaker 10: are now people, and this is a now time and
• 38:43
Speaker 10: those guys deserve what they deserve right now.
• 38:46
Speaker 4: How are we in the making?
• 38:47
Speaker 10: This is a new generation everything y'all.
• 38:49
Speaker 4: Won't you want it right now? And you gonna get
• 38:51
Speaker 4: it right now. You don't wait for nothing no more
• 38:52
Speaker 4: do it. We want to go, We got over. We
• 38:56
  Speaker 4: want to.
• 38:56
Speaker 10: Eat, but we go who we eats?
• 39:01
Speaker 4: Everything we get is right now. We want something we
• 39:04
Speaker 4: ordered on Amazon. We need no waiting generation, no mode.
• 39:08
  Speaker 4: That's over. That's a wrap on that.
• 39:10
Speaker 10: Everybody in here is impatience. You download stuff right now,
• 39:13
Speaker 10: putting it out as I speak.
• 39:16
Speaker 3: Okay, now, I I one get the concept of everybody
• 39:26
Speaker 3: wants something to happen now. But that's that's not necessarily
• 39:32
Speaker 3: how to me, you don't even have to say that.
• 39:37
Speaker 3: If he's earned it. Sure you know, if he's earned it,
• 39:41
Speaker 3: then he wasn't in a rush for it or none
• 39:44
  Speaker 3: of that.
• 39:44
Speaker 4: He just deserved it. But you're now trying to make.
• 39:48
Speaker 3: The case that he he didn't want to wait, You
• 39:51
Speaker 3: didn't want to wait, and we wanted it now. So
• 39:56
Speaker 3: y'all shouldn't nobody on the outside, nobody on the inside
• 40:00
Speaker 3: should be bothered by the weight.
• 40:03
  Speaker 4: Well, I don't know.
• 40:04
Speaker 3: Anybody who has gone, he said, He said, he is
• 40:08
Speaker 3: at every level, at every level, he has gone in
• 40:13
Speaker 3: to the Hall of fame.
• 40:16
Speaker 4: He had to wait four years at least.
• 40:19
  Speaker 5: He waited.
• 40:20
Speaker 3: He least he had four years at least to get
• 40:23
Speaker 3: into the Hall of Fame in the NFL. So you're
• 40:26
Speaker 3: telling me you can wait four He couldn't wait five ten.
• 40:31
Speaker 5: He didn't even wait a year.
• 40:33
Speaker 4: He didn't even wait, was it was it month?
• 40:36
Speaker 6: Yeah, I was gonna say it wasn't even yeah, I
• 40:38
Speaker 6: wasn't even close to that. So once again, I'm going
• 40:41
Speaker 6: to use contradiction as my favorite description of this little
• 40:46
Speaker 6: clip that we listened to as well. I mean, to me,
• 40:49
Speaker 6: it just blows my mind that as a college football coach,
• 40:53
Speaker 6: you are putting out there the concept of instant gratification
• 40:58
Speaker 6: as being right the the the one thing that these
• 41:02
Speaker 6: players need. To me, that is a total opposite of
• 41:06
Speaker 6: what a college football coach should be presenting to his future,
• 41:12
  Speaker 6: his team, his.
• 41:13
Speaker 5: Club is future players.
• 41:14
Speaker 6: We all know football is all about putting in the work,
• 41:17
Speaker 6: putting in the time, yes, putting in the effort. It's
• 41:22
Speaker 6: not something that just instantly happens overnight. So why does
• 41:27
Speaker 6: he think that for Shador that he deserves this, this
• 41:32
Speaker 6: no waiting you know now generation all of those things.
• 41:37
Speaker 6: To me, sounds like he's covering up for the fact
• 41:40
Speaker 6: that his son really didn't need to be his his
• 41:45
Speaker 6: jersey didn't need to be retired this quickly without proving
• 41:49
  Speaker 6: himself further.
• 41:50
  Speaker 3: I see, I'm I see it like he's using he's
• 41:55
Speaker 3: making the case that nobody wants to wait, so.
• 42:02
Speaker 4: He was going to be in there at some point
• 42:04
  Speaker 4: in time.
• 42:04
Speaker 5: Do you think that for sure?
• 42:06
  Speaker 4: No?
• 42:07
Speaker 6: Okay, that's my point that I'm trying to make, not really,
• 42:11
Speaker 6: And that's why he didn't wait because he knew that
• 42:13
Speaker 6: if they waited that it may not happen.
• 42:15
Speaker 4: Because what happens is if he leaves.
• 42:17
Speaker 3: If Dion were to leave, yes, and this season had passed,
• 42:23
  Speaker 3: I don't think he ever.
• 42:25
Speaker 6: Gets it right, especially if he's not successful at the
• 42:28
  Speaker 6: next level.
• 42:29
Speaker 4: With Dion being there then of course.
• 42:33
Speaker 3: But my problem with that is and I and I
• 42:37
Speaker 3: do think that they're they're having this issue already of
• 42:41
Speaker 3: former Colorado players who were who have stats, who have
• 42:48
Speaker 3: reasons why they should be in the Hall of Fame.
• 42:53
Speaker 4: They were patiently waiting on their turn.
• 42:56
Speaker 6: That's why the ad is the one he said he was,
• 43:00
Speaker 6: because he's the one catching all the calls.
• 43:02
Speaker 3: You know, there's no question he's dealing with the fallout
• 43:06
  Speaker 3: and and.
• 43:07
Speaker 4: Let's just be let'sten, you know.
• 43:09
Speaker 3: And again for any listener who's saying that, Okay, this
• 43:14
Speaker 3: could have been a black white thing, this could have
• 43:17
Speaker 3: been this whole issue is just because it's Dion again,
• 43:23
Speaker 3: you're right, it is Dion, Because Dion is the one.
• 43:27
Speaker 11: Who's doing all the talking exactly, and he's he he
• 43:30
Speaker 11: talked himself into something right there that is literally wrong.
• 43:39
Speaker 3: What do you say when you're to a freshman that
• 43:41
Speaker 3: comes into Colorado? Right, let me say, coach, I want
• 43:45
Speaker 3: to play. I want to start right now.
• 43:47
Speaker 4: Son. You got to be patient, you got to take
• 43:48
Speaker 4: your time. Your time will come.
• 43:50
Speaker 5: It's the complete opposite.
• 43:52
Speaker 3: It's the complete opposite of everything that we know about football.
• 43:56
  Speaker 4: There's this zero.
• 43:59
Speaker 6: And that's why to me when he when he goes
• 44:02
Speaker 6: on that rant about you know, this is the now generation.
• 44:04
Speaker 6: When we want something, we go to Amazon, it's almost
• 44:07
Speaker 6: like he's trying to convince himself as much as he
• 44:10
Speaker 6: is the press, because it's well deserved.
• 44:13
Speaker 4: To me, that analogy doesn't really work. No, I'm not
• 44:18
  Speaker 4: in sports.
• 44:18
Speaker 3: Well here's the other thing. If I don't have the money,
• 44:21
  Speaker 3: I don't care what's in Amazon. I can't just go
• 44:24
Speaker 3: and get it. I may have to wait for the
• 44:26
Speaker 3: next check, I may have to do whatever I need
• 44:28
Speaker 3: to do. I might not be able to get it
• 44:30
Speaker 3: for a month. The catch to me is can you
• 44:34
Speaker 3: get it? Can you work hard enough to go get it?
• 44:37
Speaker 3: Sure you you can't. You can't make the case that
• 44:41
Speaker 3: it's got to be here, it's got to be now,
• 44:44
Speaker 3: you got to have it right now.
• 44:45
  Speaker 6: Right, That's that's totally off base. Whether it's it's a
• 44:49
Speaker 6: double edged sword, of course, being Deon Sanders dad her son,
• 44:54
Speaker 6: I mean him being your dad, because it could go
• 44:58
Speaker 6: you know, it could be work in your favor or
• 45:00
Speaker 6: in this case when with the draft, I feel like
• 45:02
Speaker 6: it didn't work in his favor. And so you know,
• 45:06
Speaker 6: I think I think Shador has a long road ahead
• 45:10
Speaker 6: of him to earn that Jersey retirement. I think his
• 45:15
Speaker 6: his individual achievements are they're good, but are they worthy
• 45:21
Speaker 6: of what they did for him?
• 45:22
  Speaker 5: I'm not sure.
• 45:23
Speaker 3: And and either way, there's a already you fall in
• 45:27
Speaker 3: line behind a whole host soctly former players who are waiting, right.
• 45:32
  Speaker 5: That's that's reality.
• 45:34
Speaker 3: That's the reality of it, all right. So let's let's
• 45:36
Speaker 3: get the last clip.
• 45:39
Speaker 12: Jason. At that point, I have a feeling that that
• 45:42
  Speaker 12: A d. George He's gonna put a pair of sunglasses
• 45:45
Speaker 12: up there in that ring of honor and just called
• 45:48
Speaker 12: coach Prime gonna give him. Jason, I have a question,
• 45:51
Speaker 12: do you have that much of an issue with Travis
• 45:53
Speaker 12: Hunter having his jersey or attackers ball will give a
• 45:57
Speaker 12: Heisman Trophy winner something.
• 46:00
Speaker 13: Rashan Salom waited twenty three years.
• 46:05
Speaker 4: He won the Heisman.
• 46:07
Speaker 13: He rushed for two thousand yards and you know, some
• 46:09
Speaker 13: incredible season, Travis Hunter was going to be in their
• 46:14
Speaker 13: Ring of honor and get his number retired. I would
• 46:18
Speaker 13: have waited, and they've Look they've diminished Travis Hunter by
• 46:24
Speaker 13: attaching him to Shadure. That's overshadowed the kid that actually
• 46:30
Speaker 13: was the Heisman Trophy winner. The fact that he piggybacked
• 46:33
Speaker 13: Shadu off of Travis Hunter because Okay, put Travis in
• 46:37
Speaker 13: this year, put Shadur in next year. He can't do
• 46:40
Speaker 13: it because Shadur can't stand on his own two feet
• 46:43
Speaker 13: and justify that decision.
• 46:48
Speaker 5: Well, I think that that spec volumes.
• 46:51
Speaker 3: I think so too. And I think the fact that
• 46:57
Speaker 3: you look at the two one is a guarantee, you know,
• 47:04
  Speaker 3: first round pick.
• 47:09
Speaker 6: Pick of the draft the draft. Yeah, I mean that
• 47:14
  Speaker 6: that's right there.
• 47:18
Speaker 3: I really starting to it almost looks like we have
• 47:21
Speaker 3: to get something over here for my son because all
• 47:27
Speaker 3: this is happening with his buddy.
• 47:30
Speaker 4: See, I would hate to be I would hate to.
• 47:33
Speaker 3: Be on I'd hate to be the friend of in
• 47:35
Speaker 3: this situation because you got to sit beside him, hear
• 47:39
Speaker 3: all this craziness from him and his day. Yes, and
• 47:44
Speaker 3: and I don't know how much are you patting me
• 47:49
Speaker 3: on the back because.
• 47:49
  Speaker 4: I'm already good?
• 47:50
Speaker 3: Right, you know? And then you're gonna go And then
• 47:53
Speaker 3: here's the here's my thing. We're talking about the Cleveland Browns.
• 47:58
  Speaker 4: That's where you're going. Okay.
• 48:01
Speaker 5: I love the way you preface that. Yes, we're talking
• 48:03
  Speaker 5: about the Browns.
• 48:04
  Speaker 4: That's where you're Cleveland.
• 48:06
Speaker 3: Being Cleveland used to be my favorite team. I grew
• 48:09
Speaker 3: up of Brown's, diehard Browns.
• 48:11
Speaker 5: Anything against the Browns.
• 48:13
Speaker 3: I don't have anything against them either. That they are
• 48:15
Speaker 3: where they are right you are there. You don't need
• 48:20
Speaker 3: to say anything one All the things that you're saying,
• 48:24
Speaker 3: all these clips, the things that you're saying are making
• 48:28
Speaker 3: veteran players upset. Sure they're not gonna say it, but
• 48:34
Speaker 3: they're not liking they're not liking you talking about all
• 48:37
Speaker 3: this kind of stuff. How great you're gonna be. You
• 48:40
Speaker 3: haven't even you haven't touched an NFL field yet to
• 48:46
Speaker 3: see exactly what it's like. Your Dad dominated it, but
• 48:51
Speaker 3: he can't play it for you, and so you're gonna
• 48:54
Speaker 3: have to go out. You're gonna have to see it.
• 48:57
Speaker 3: And I can tell you how many times have you
• 49:00
Speaker 3: seen great quarterbacks, great running backs, great guys at any
• 49:06
Speaker 3: position everybody think, oh God, she's gonna be great, goes
• 49:09
Speaker 3: early in the draft and does.
• 49:11
  Speaker 4: What nothing right?
• 49:13
Speaker 6: And those are the ones that have high expectations that
• 49:15
Speaker 6: were drafted early, first second round. Yes, yes, So now
• 49:20
Speaker 6: we're looking at Shador, who was almost that he was
• 49:23
Speaker 6: in the last round correct basically basically yeah.
• 49:27
Speaker 4: I mean he's too he's too up for me, right,
• 49:31
  Speaker 4: So you know.
• 49:33
Speaker 3: My question is I want to see what he I
• 49:36
Speaker 3: want to see what you do. Yeah, you know, because
• 49:40
  Speaker 3: I'm not. I don't wish him bad at all. I
• 49:43
Speaker 3: wish him. I love for him to be great, but
• 49:46
  Speaker 3: he's gonna have to learn to because he's I don't
• 49:48
Speaker 3: think he's ever going to be deon.
• 49:50
Speaker 4: So he needs to shut up and just play.
• 49:53
Speaker 6: And I think that same advice that you're giving to
• 49:55
Speaker 6: Shador applies to Dion as well.
• 49:57
Speaker 4: He's got it, Yeah, he's gonna he's start.
• 49:59
Speaker 5: To let it go. He's got so let it go.
• 50:01
Speaker 6: And let his son go out there and prove on
• 50:04
Speaker 6: his own merits that he deserves to be there and
• 50:07
Speaker 6: deserved to be drafted higher.
• 50:10
Speaker 3: And you're one hundred percent right. And I'll say this
• 50:15
Speaker 3: so and and and you can close this out. But
• 50:20
Speaker 3: this is something that I think I see more of
• 50:23
Speaker 3: in sports now, parents being you know, involved.
• 50:26
Speaker 4: And I am wondering if.
• 50:32
Speaker 3: Dion's active aggressive being part of his son's career, does
• 50:41
Speaker 3: that tempt does that encourage parents today to do to
• 50:47
Speaker 3: attempt to do the same thing. And I think that
• 50:51
Speaker 3: I think that's that's showing us something wrong.
• 50:54
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 50:54
  Speaker 4: It's not a good exam, It's not it's not a
• 50:56
  Speaker 4: good example.
• 50:56
Speaker 6: It's not a good example of what to do for
• 50:58
Speaker 6: your for your your son or your daughter.
• 51:00
Speaker 3: Old coaches are not gonna deal with you. No, they're
• 51:04
Speaker 3: not gonna deal with you or your son. They'll tell
• 51:06
Speaker 3: you to take your son. You and your son go
• 51:07
Speaker 3: somewhere else. New school coaches may try to try to
• 51:15
Speaker 3: make it, they'll try to hang in there with you
• 51:17
Speaker 3: at for a little bit. But if you as a parent,
• 51:20
Speaker 3: if you go too far, and you have to really
• 51:22
Speaker 3: you have to pay attention to where you are and
• 51:25
Speaker 3: what you're saying to the football or the head coach
• 51:28
Speaker 3: of basketball, whatever that head coach is, you gotta be
• 51:31
  Speaker 3: careful of what.
• 51:32
Speaker 4: You're saying to him.
• 51:34
Speaker 3: And your son can't sit around and talk about how
• 51:38
Speaker 3: great he is before he's even got on the ground.
• 51:41
Speaker 6: And somebody, you know, somebody created that monster. I mean,
• 51:44
Speaker 6: somebody created that personality. Yes and so, And I'm afraid
• 51:49
Speaker 6: this is just a reflection of society. Like you just said,
• 51:52
Speaker 6: it's not the best example we're putting out there, but
• 51:54
Speaker 6: unfortunately it's what's happening. And I think the influences of
• 51:58
Speaker 6: once again social media, you know, just being everything at
• 52:02
Speaker 6: your fingertips, travel ball, everything immediate.
• 52:06
Speaker 4: You know, immediate grati gratification.
• 52:08
Speaker 3: And to his point, there's no such thing as immediate
• 52:13
Speaker 3: gratification other than you celebrating your touchdown because that touchdown,
• 52:18
Speaker 3: because that touchdown does not mean you're gonna win the game.
• 52:20
Speaker 3: It just means you got a touchdown. We may lose
• 52:22
Speaker 3: the game, so that celebration, we could we could be
• 52:26
Speaker 3: losing the game. You get an interception and we still lost,
• 52:29
Speaker 3: and I'm in the end zone doing a dance, celebrating
• 52:33
  Speaker 3: my own thing.
• 52:34
Speaker 5: When we lose right.
• 52:36
Speaker 6: So, and that's why we think, once again contradictory all
• 52:39
Speaker 6: of this because this is all he's making it all
• 52:43
Speaker 6: about a single individual, his son, rather than a team sport.
• 52:47
Speaker 3: Because if you try to get everybody, what if everybody
• 52:49
  Speaker 3: does their own.
• 52:51
Speaker 5: Thing right, it won't work.
• 52:53
Speaker 4: It won't work. It won't work.
• 52:55
Speaker 3: Now, ladies and gentlemen, we I tell you sports is
• 52:58
Speaker 3: getting crazy and and it's just and it just bothers
• 53:02
Speaker 3: me that you know, a player as great as Dion was,
• 53:07
Speaker 3: he can't he doesn't see it. And everybody I think
• 53:11
Speaker 3: wants the best for his son, even and the people
• 53:13
Speaker 3: who don't is because of.
• 53:16
  Speaker 4: Dia, right.
• 53:17
Speaker 6: And the one thing that's coming to my mind right
• 53:20
Speaker 6: now is that quote that we had when Tennessee was
• 53:22
Speaker 6: dealing with that quarterback situation. No player is bigger than
• 53:26
Speaker 6: the program, and that that that has to be, that
• 53:29
Speaker 6: has to be emphasized.
• 53:31
Speaker 3: There's nothing about them too that are even talking about
• 53:34
  Speaker 3: the team.
• 53:35
Speaker 5: Right, They're talking about him individual.
• 53:37
  Speaker 4: Just individual.
• 53:38
