- 0:07Speaker 1: The inconsistency of the twenty twenty six Orioles well on
- 0:11Speaker 1: display today at Oriel Park at Camden Yards. Welcome in
- 0:15Speaker 1: to the latest edition of Birdland Territory with Tim Barblace
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Brad Brock. I'm Steve Mleski. The bird split two
- 0:22Speaker 1: with Houston today at the Yard. As we tape this
- 0:25Speaker 1: about twenty four hours before they take the field in
- 0:27Speaker 1: the Yankee Stadium. We're gonna get into that in just
- 0:29Speaker 1: a minute. Game one today, the Oriols speed Houston ten
- 0:32Speaker 1: to three. It was one of their better games of
- 0:34Speaker 1: the year. Game two was not that as they lost
- 0:37Speaker 1: eleven to five. We're down ten to nothing early and
- 0:40Speaker 1: so guys, we're gonna get into the aspects of both
- 0:42Speaker 1: games throughout this show today. We got plenty of time
- 0:44Speaker 1: to do that. But how crep Now are the Orioles
- 0:49Speaker 1: for this big four game series in the Bronx. I mean,
- 0:52Speaker 1: this is the first twice in the next four series
- 0:54Speaker 1: they're going to face the Yankees. The Yankees on paper
- 0:58Speaker 1: right now, look so much the better team, but I
- 1:01Speaker 1: think it's an opportunity for the Orioles to go in
- 1:04Speaker 1: there and surprise us, elevate their game show that this
- 1:08Speaker 1: second game was They're gonna flush it, as they like
- 1:10Speaker 1: to say, and move on. What what are your thoughts,
- 1:14Speaker 1: Brad on this big weekend looming for the Orioles.
- 1:17Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's a big one. It's the first time
- 1:19Speaker 2: going on the road facing the Division O ponent, and
- 1:21Speaker 2: anytime you go to Yankee Stadium, the games are just
- 1:23Speaker 2: they're more exciting. It's there's a lotder atmosphere. It's it's
- 1:27Speaker 2: New York City on a Friday night, so it's gonna
- 1:29Speaker 2: be a little bit more amped up. And I mean,
- 1:32Speaker 2: in the history of Orioles Yankees, there's been some crazy
- 1:34Speaker 2: games at Yankee Stadium, so you can always expect that.
- 1:37Speaker 2: But you know, honestly, going into it, I think I
- 1:40Speaker 2: like the abats they had today. I know they got
- 1:42Speaker 2: beat real bad in the second game, but I like
- 1:44Speaker 2: how many pitches they're starting to see. I don't like
- 1:46Speaker 2: the swing and miss obviously as much as what's going on,
- 1:49Speaker 2: but I really just like the they're seeing tons of
- 1:51Speaker 2: pitches they're getting. I feel like almost every batter had
- 1:53Speaker 2: a two two through two count. A lot of times
- 1:56Speaker 2: they're just not getting the swing when they need it.
- 1:57Speaker 2: So the offensive side. I think I think they're getting
- 2:00Speaker 2: They're getting really really close. And then today Bassett's outing
- 2:03Speaker 2: is going to go a long way for this this
- 2:05Speaker 2: stretch here Yankee Stadium, having him get into the seventh
- 2:07Speaker 2: inning there only having to use Rigo Garcia for one out,
- 2:11Speaker 2: get him ready to go for the weekend, and then
- 2:13Speaker 2: you didn't have to use Helsley or Kittridge or the
- 2:15Speaker 2: big arms at the back of the bullpen. So the
- 2:17Speaker 2: bullpen's ready to go. And I think that outing that
- 2:19Speaker 2: Bassett had today is going to go a long way.
- 2:22Speaker 3: It was huge.
- 2:23Speaker 4: It was a must have outing for Chris Bassett because
- 2:27Speaker 4: we know how much he's really struggled. But also with
- 2:30Speaker 4: this being a doubleheader ahead of this four game series,
- 2:33Speaker 4: especially when you consider the fact that the Yankees are
- 2:36Speaker 4: off today, so that's a big advantage that New York
- 2:39Speaker 4: has going into this four game series. And Trevor Rodgers
- 2:43Speaker 4: was scheduled to start in the opener, he's on the
- 2:46Speaker 4: il due to the flu. But looking at this series
- 2:49Speaker 4: as a whole, has this been the start to the
- 2:52Speaker 4: season that the Orioles have wanted? Absolutely not, You're you're
- 2:54Speaker 4: a game under five hundred heading into May, but looking
- 2:58Speaker 4: at this from a glass full perspective, this is an
- 3:02Speaker 4: opportunity to make a statement.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Guys.
- 3:04Speaker 4: The Yankees are red hot going into this four game series.
- 3:07Speaker 4: They've won ten of twelve games, and they lead the
- 3:11Speaker 4: league in home runs. The starting pitching has been really,
- 3:14Speaker 4: really good, and obviously you're gonna face four of their starters.
- 3:18Speaker 4: You miss Schweitzler, but you're going to face everyone else.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Max Bried'll start that game on Monday.
- 3:24Speaker 4: It's a tall task going into this series, but it's
- 3:28Speaker 4: a big opportunity for the Birds.
- 3:32Speaker 1: It is, and I think some fans might be surprised
- 3:34Speaker 1: to know this stat. In the last three years, Orioles
- 3:36Speaker 1: and Yankees has been even just about Baltimore nineteen wins
- 3:41Speaker 1: Yankees twenty. The Orioles lost the season series to the
- 3:45Speaker 1: Brons Bombers six straight years from twenty seventeen through twenty
- 3:48Speaker 1: twenty two. But there's two years they were a playoff team.
- 3:52Speaker 1: They beat them seven and six. Orioles in twenty three
- 3:55Speaker 1: when they won the East eight and five, they won.
- 3:58Speaker 5: The season series the next year.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Last year, seventy five win Orioles went four and nine,
- 4:03Speaker 1: So they've been holding their own in recent years. But
- 4:05Speaker 1: right now, the Yankees are scoring nearly five a game.
- 4:08Speaker 1: They're starting rotation era is the best in Major League
- 4:13Speaker 1: Baseball two seven to four the Orioles, who by the way,
- 4:16Speaker 1: are at four sixty. That doesn't even look like a
- 4:18Speaker 1: good matchup on paper. So to me, they are the
- 4:21Speaker 1: big underdog in this series. Two and two, I think
- 4:24Speaker 1: we'd almost take right three and one, we'd be elated.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But I think the Orioles guys have to prove that
- 4:32Speaker 1: they can elevate their play to look as good as
- 4:35Speaker 1: the Yankees or in their league, and now they have
- 4:38Speaker 1: seven chances to do that in their next thirteen games.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Yain, I think, honestly, it's it's a good measuring stick.
- 4:45Speaker 2: I think it's a it's an early test and it's
- 4:47Speaker 2: still the first week of May, so it's not emergency
- 4:50Speaker 2: if you went in there lost three out of four.
- 4:52Speaker 2: But it's a good test. It's where they want to be.
- 4:54Speaker 2: It's the team that they want to compete against and
- 4:56Speaker 2: see where they are up against the Yankees their first place.
- 4:59Speaker 2: They want to try to make gain some ground on them.
- 5:02Speaker 2: But like I said, at the end of the day,
- 5:04Speaker 2: I think it's it's just going in there one game
- 5:05Speaker 2: at a time. That's the beauty of baseball. It's it
- 5:07Speaker 2: doesn't matter what happened today, it's tomorrow's a whole new thing.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Like we've talked about a bunch of times on the show.
- 5:12Speaker 2: But when you go in there, you try to get
- 5:14Speaker 2: the first game of the series and then you move
- 5:15Speaker 2: on to Saturday. So that's that's the beauty of it all.
- 5:18Speaker 2: And I just kind of look at those numbers and
- 5:20Speaker 2: I feel like it's got to come back to the
- 5:22Speaker 2: me And I feel like the Yankees they're not gonna
- 5:23Speaker 2: have a two seven the entire year, and the Orioles,
- 5:26Speaker 2: you would hope they're starting pitches are gonna have a
- 5:28Speaker 2: four to six. So that's that's the hope of Orioles
- 5:30Speaker 2: fans that it's got to come back a little bit. Sometimes,
- 5:33Speaker 2: you know, pitchers get off to a great start and
- 5:34Speaker 2: they kind of settle in the middle of the season
- 5:36Speaker 2: and hopefully the Oriols hitters can get hot and kind
- 5:38Speaker 2: of knock that era number up a little bit.
- 5:41Speaker 4: For the Yankees and Steve what's crazy about those numbers?
- 5:45Speaker 5: Man?
- 5:45Speaker 4: Garrett Cole's return is still looming, you know, Carlos Rodin
- 5:49Speaker 4: is still sidelined, and they're still off to this great
- 5:53Speaker 4: start to the season.
- 5:55Speaker 3: Something that we've been talking about a lot over the
- 5:56Speaker 3: past couple.
- 5:57Speaker 4: Of weeks is that this has been a very unique
- 6:00Speaker 4: start to the schedule for the Orioles. You flip the
- 6:03Speaker 4: calendar to May, they've only played that one series against
- 6:07Speaker 4: an Al's team and they lost that series to the
- 6:10Speaker 4: Red Sox at Camden Yards. But it really flips in
- 6:13Speaker 4: the month of May. You got these two series against
- 6:16Speaker 4: the Yankees. You have a total of seventeen games over
- 6:20Speaker 4: May against the Yankees. Two series there, two series against
- 6:24Speaker 4: the Rays, and then you have a four game series
- 6:27Speaker 4: against the Blue Jays. So seventeen combined games against those
- 6:30Speaker 4: two teams, and the Yankees obviously off to a hot
- 6:34Speaker 4: start twenty and eleven heading into this series. But oddly enough,
- 6:39Speaker 4: despite the Birds playing you know what, thirty one games already,
- 6:42Speaker 4: they've only played four games against teams with a winning
- 6:46Speaker 4: record and they're one in three in those games.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So this is an opportunity to make a statement.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Will be an interesting weekend in the Bronx in this show.
- 6:56Speaker 1: In a minute, we're gonna get in some interesting comments today.
- 7:00Speaker 1: What Craig Albernas had to say briefly after game two
- 7:04Speaker 1: and what Chris Bassett had to say after he pitched
- 7:07Speaker 1: so well in game one, which was between games interview,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and we're going to catch up with those quotes and
- 7:13Speaker 1: more in a moment on Birdland Territory.
- 7:16Speaker 4: We love our Doldabella, who's really just a couch cushion
- 7:18Speaker 4: in our house.
- 7:20Speaker 6: And you do anything for her. A quick message from

- 8:12Speaker 6: is not an insurance and is not engaged in the
- 8:14Speaker 6: business of insurance.
- 8:17Speaker 5: Berdland Territory with you.
- 8:19Speaker 1: After the Oriol split a doubleheader with Houston, SO Chris
- 8:22Speaker 1: Bassett his best start as an Oriel game won one run,
- 8:25Speaker 1: six and two thirds, ninety four pitches so pitcherfish and
- 8:29Speaker 1: early at a season high twelve whifs.
- 8:31Speaker 5: The curveball is really dancing, look really good.
- 8:34Speaker 1: And then when he talked to reporters, he revealed essentially
- 8:40Speaker 1: that the starters had what he termed to come to
- 8:42Speaker 1: Jesus Meeting, and he also termed their performance as poor.
- 8:48Speaker 1: As a media guy, even as a fan, I like that.
- 8:51Speaker 1: I like when the team is saying what we all
- 8:53Speaker 1: can see has to do better. And coincidentally, since the
- 8:57Speaker 1: come to Jesus Meeting, Bob's and bats through their best
- 9:00Speaker 1: games and obviously it got away in the game two today,
- 9:03Speaker 1: But those are two guys who will be counted on
- 9:05Speaker 1: all year with others. What did you guys think of
- 9:07Speaker 1: those comments?
- 9:10Speaker 2: I think it was awesome, Like you're saying, as a
- 9:12Speaker 2: fan as even guys on the team. Guys are very
- 9:15Speaker 2: self aware if it's going well or not. They just
- 9:18Speaker 2: I think they either don't want to admit it or
- 9:19Speaker 2: they don't want to say it out loud and have
- 9:21Speaker 2: it kind of be printed. But for him to say
- 9:23Speaker 2: that and say they had a meeting and kind of
- 9:25Speaker 2: say it's unacceptable how we've been pitching, I think was
- 9:28Speaker 2: awesome to see. They're very self aware that they have
- 9:31Speaker 2: not lived up to the expectations that they have for
- 9:33Speaker 2: themselves to this season. And I think for him to
- 9:36Speaker 2: come out and tell everybody that they had a meeting
- 9:37Speaker 2: and said we need to correct some things. Sometimes it
- 9:40Speaker 2: has to be said. And I think when you sit
- 9:42Speaker 2: there and everyone's kind of thinking it but nobody's saying it,
- 9:45Speaker 2: it's a way better thing to have a meeting with
- 9:47Speaker 2: all the guys and just say, listen, this is not
- 9:49Speaker 2: okay what we're doing. This stuff is too good. We're
- 9:52Speaker 2: living out of the strike zone. We need to be
- 9:53Speaker 2: more in the strike zone. And you clearly saw those
- 9:55Speaker 2: two guys attacking hitters, going at them to get to
- 9:58Speaker 2: their all sweet stuff. It's no Almost the entire pitching staff,
- 10:02Speaker 2: starting staff lives off their off speed. But the only
- 10:05Speaker 2: way to get through your off speed is if you
- 10:06Speaker 2: throw fastballs on the zone. So I think that his
- 10:09Speaker 2: boat was perfect. There's no other way to describe it.
- 10:13Speaker 4: That's the leadership that we've been talking about a lot
- 10:17Speaker 4: this offseason. You bring in Chris Bassett, you bring in
- 10:20Speaker 4: Pete Alonso, some guys that have been through the Wars,
- 10:22Speaker 4: They've had phenomenal appearances in the postseason.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Chris Bassett and Blow Jay's were this close to winning
- 10:29Speaker 3: the World.
- 10:30Speaker 4: Series over the Dodgers as big time underdogs there and Bassett,
- 10:34Speaker 4: you can think back to the moment during spring training
- 10:37Speaker 4: where the guys they were going through defensive drills and
- 10:41Speaker 4: kind of lacks of days ago, and Bassett called everybody
- 10:43Speaker 4: in and say, hey, we got to do this right.
- 10:45Speaker 3: And now you're just seeing that even more.
- 10:48Speaker 4: And with Bassett today, guys by far and away his
- 10:52Speaker 4: best outing and he had a season high twelve whiffs,
- 10:55Speaker 4: and Brad, you're right where even in the starts prior
- 10:59Speaker 4: to this, when we've seen him at his best, those.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Flashes of it. The curveball has been really strong, the
- 11:05Speaker 3: sweeper's been really strong. He had six swings and miss
- 11:09Speaker 3: on his curveball today two on the sweeper. But I
- 11:13Speaker 3: wanted to get.
- 11:13Speaker 4: Your thoughts on Shane Boz yesterday, Brad, because something that
- 11:18Speaker 4: was a lot different from his prior start in Kansas City.
- 11:22Speaker 3: He didn't throw a single sinker, a single two seamer. Well,
- 11:25Speaker 3: he threw twelve of those pitches, eleven of them to
- 11:29Speaker 3: right handed batters. What did you see with that adjustment
- 11:33Speaker 3: and how difficult does it is that for right handed batteries?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it's he must have seen something where
- 11:40Speaker 2: writers are staying out over the plate. He doesn't like
- 11:43Speaker 2: to come in a lot of times, and the sinker
- 11:45Speaker 2: is going to do that for you. You run it
- 11:46Speaker 2: in off the hands, even if you throw it for
- 11:48Speaker 2: a ball a lot of times, is going to keep
- 11:49Speaker 2: the hitter from getting out over the plate. And that's
- 11:52Speaker 2: where he likes to live. He likes to live out
- 11:54Speaker 2: and up in the strike zone. But if you're not
- 11:56Speaker 2: showing anything on the inner third of the plate, hitters
- 11:59Speaker 2: can just sit out there and sit out there all
- 12:00Speaker 2: the time. When I was pitching, I would always pitch away.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Everybody knew of the skyingport. I always pitched away, But
- 12:05Speaker 2: you had to come in every once in a while
- 12:07Speaker 2: to just show them you can't just sit out over
- 12:10Speaker 2: the plate. So I think that's probably what he saw.
- 12:12Speaker 2: He saw numbers that he didn't like about something about
- 12:15Speaker 2: guys getting out over the plate. So he started running
- 12:17Speaker 2: that two seamer in and you have to respect it
- 12:20Speaker 2: as a hitter. You throw it one time, okay, but
- 12:22Speaker 2: like you said, eleven times to right. He's he's trying
- 12:24Speaker 2: to prove a point there. He's trying to say, you're
- 12:26Speaker 2: not gonna be able to just get out and hit
- 12:28Speaker 2: balls the other way or pull balls that are middle
- 12:30Speaker 2: in anymore. I'm going to run this two seamen at you.
- 12:33Speaker 2: So he did that and it was really effective. And
- 12:35Speaker 2: I think when he starts doing that, his breaking ball
- 12:37Speaker 2: becomes that much more effective because he can start it
- 12:41Speaker 2: a third away and have it break off the plate
- 12:43Speaker 2: and it looks like it's more of a strike than
- 12:45Speaker 2: it actually is, and that's where he's going to get
- 12:47Speaker 2: a swing and miss.
- 12:49Speaker 1: Hey, go back to Bassett. I agree with you, guys,
- 12:51Speaker 1: great leadership. He's kind of been that from the start.
- 12:54Speaker 1: The clubhouse is saying that about him, and then he's
- 12:57Speaker 1: pitching poorly early, so you know, the fans are like Okay,
- 13:01Speaker 1: he showed me the leadership. Well he did, he did today,
- 13:04Speaker 1: and he did in revealing what those pitchers said. And
- 13:09Speaker 1: again it's better to get it out then. So over
- 13:12Speaker 1: the years I've interviewed many of starting pitchers. A boy
- 13:15Speaker 1: one pitch, well, you look at the boxer, I give
- 13:17Speaker 1: up six runs. Okay, maybe he's not wrong, but six
- 13:21Speaker 1: runs doesn't get it done, whether it was one pitch
- 13:23Speaker 1: or ten pitches. So it's better to say we haven't
- 13:26Speaker 1: been doing as well and with a two run difference
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yankee rotation to Baltimore, he's right, But then he did it.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You say it and you follow it up. That really,
- 13:37Speaker 1: I think is impressive.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Absolutely. It's one thing to say we had this meeting.
- 13:43Speaker 2: It's another thing to come out and have two great
- 13:45Speaker 2: starts like they had to start the series. So I
- 13:47Speaker 2: think it's I have a perfect personal experience with this
- 13:50Speaker 2: having to come to Jesus kind of moment where I
- 13:53Speaker 2: was kind of twenty fifteen, I was out of options,
- 13:55Speaker 2: kind of good outing, bad outing, back and forth, and
- 13:58Speaker 2: pitching coach Dave Wallace pulled me in the laundry room
- 14:01Speaker 2: in Houston and he just basically anytime he had a
- 14:05Speaker 2: big conversation with you. He'd always take off his glasses
- 14:07Speaker 2: and he sat there and he had a man conversation
- 14:10Speaker 2: with me, and it was to this day, it was
- 14:11Speaker 2: the complete turning point of my career. It was kind
- 14:14Speaker 2: of challenging me, and it was one of those conversations
- 14:17Speaker 2: I can still hear in the back of my head,
- 14:19Speaker 2: and it carried me throughout my career. It was kind
- 14:21Speaker 2: of just you, you're better than what you're showing. Are
- 14:24Speaker 2: you going to go out there and prove it? Or
- 14:27Speaker 2: are you just going to sit here and sit in
- 14:28Speaker 2: mediocrity and get deafaided and go through a different team
- 14:31Speaker 2: and have some success. So these kinds of meetings can
- 14:34Speaker 2: have a monumental turn for pictures overall, and I don't
- 14:38Speaker 2: think it happens very often. So I honestly loved hearing
- 14:41Speaker 2: that today. And I think for him to back it
- 14:43Speaker 2: up and go out there and have the start he
- 14:44Speaker 2: had was just showing his leadership and proving to everybody
- 14:48Speaker 2: that I think it's kind of if I can do it,
- 14:50Speaker 2: you guys can do it. Because I'm thirty five, thirty
- 14:53Speaker 2: six years old, I don't throw ninety eight like you
- 14:56Speaker 2: guys do. And I can go out there and I
- 14:57Speaker 2: can get swings in this is it's all about timing
- 14:59Speaker 2: for the and today he was throwing fastballs. Bye guys. Alvarez,
- 15:03Speaker 2: he struck out with the four seen fastball at ninety
- 15:05Speaker 2: two or ninety one miles an hour. The guy's one
- 15:07Speaker 2: of the hottest hitters in the league. And if he
- 15:09Speaker 2: can do it, those guys can do it. And I
- 15:11Speaker 2: think today was just an awesome example of leadership and
- 15:13Speaker 2: just going out there and getting the job done.
- 15:16Speaker 4: It's such a great point, Brad, because you think about
- 15:19Speaker 4: Bassett at thirty seven compared to Shane Bose who could
- 15:23Speaker 4: just throw gas and Kyle Brad just throws filth and rogers.
- 15:29Speaker 4: Of course is a different type of pitcher. But you're right,
- 15:32Speaker 4: like Bassett leading by example there and his words, I think,
- 15:36Speaker 4: and I think you believe too, Brad, like they carry
- 15:39Speaker 4: so much more weight because he's been.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Through it so long and he's experienced.
- 15:44Speaker 4: Such high highs and had such great success and to
- 15:47Speaker 4: last as long as he has in MLB, that's just
- 15:50Speaker 4: not common.
- 15:53Speaker 2: No, it's not. And for him to still be doing it,
- 15:56Speaker 2: I mean it's I'm just a firm believer of his
- 15:58Speaker 2: career numbers are there for a reason, and he's going
- 16:00Speaker 2: to be there at the end of the year. I
- 16:02Speaker 2: just have heard it from him when I was a rookie.
- 16:04Speaker 2: I remember Houston Street coming to me in the outfield
- 16:05Speaker 2: and just saying, listen, I know him off too a
- 16:07Speaker 2: bad start. He's like, by the end of the year,
- 16:08Speaker 2: I'm gonna have this number, that number, this number. And
- 16:10Speaker 2: he was exactly right. He's like, experience helps me know
- 16:14Speaker 2: where I'm going to be. He wasn't nervous. I think
- 16:16Speaker 2: he works really hard. He knows all the analytics for everything.
- 16:20Speaker 2: He went out. You could tell in the last eight
- 16:22Speaker 2: days where he didn't start, he worked really hard. He
- 16:24Speaker 2: threw more two scenes today than he had all year,
- 16:27Speaker 2: so there was obviously something he was working on and
- 16:29Speaker 2: it worked and it was I think it's just a
- 16:31Speaker 2: It was a big boost, and I think guys are
- 16:33Speaker 2: kind of like, man, now it's my turn. I got
- 16:35Speaker 2: to go and step up. Obviously, the Brandon Young outing
- 16:38Speaker 2: was tough today, but the other guys who've been in
- 16:40Speaker 2: the rotation all year, it's like, Okay, now it's my turn.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I can't can't let Chris show me up today, So
- 16:44Speaker 2: it's like I said, I think he can create kind
- 16:47Speaker 2: of a friendly competition and kind of raise the level
- 16:49Speaker 2: play of everybody in the starting staff.
- 16:52Speaker 5: Listening.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Unless Chris Bashik got all overnight, and clearly he hasn't.
- 16:57Speaker 1: He was going to start pitching better, and he did.
- 17:00Speaker 1: This guy pitched in the World Series and shut down
- 17:02Speaker 1: the Dodgers in a relief role, which is not his role.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So if a couple start bad starts in April, aren't
- 17:09Speaker 1: going to scare this guy. And obviously he's starting to
- 17:11Speaker 1: get it on track for the Orioles, which could be
- 17:13Speaker 1: so big. But let's talk about a couple of Grand
- 17:16Speaker 1: Slams that were hit today in the same game. We're
- 17:19Speaker 1: going to get to that in just a minute here
- 17:21Speaker 1: on Birdland Territory.

- 18:24Speaker 1: So the Oriols are fifteen and sixteen. As the month
- 18:27Speaker 1: of April comes to an end, we get into may
- 18:30Speaker 1: Orioles in the Bronx. But let's talk about two Grand
- 18:32Speaker 1: Slams in one game. The Oriols had that happen today
- 18:35Speaker 1: in Game one, the eighth time in team history. The
- 18:38Speaker 1: last was September eleventh, twenty fifteen, against Kansas City. It
- 18:42Speaker 1: was Steve Clevenger and noahen Rimold. Today was Adley Rutschman,
- 18:46Speaker 1: whose third career Grand Slam, and Jeremiah Jackson, his second
- 18:51Speaker 1: of this season, Jackson has twenty four RBIs. That's more
- 18:55Speaker 1: than Aaron Judge in the top five in the American League.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Adley and Jackson put on a show today in Game one,
- 19:02Speaker 1: and both look like they're ploys for big years.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Yeah, Adley looks really good. I mean, he's just especially
- 19:10Speaker 2: from the left side right now, and today the home
- 19:11Speaker 2: run was from the right side, but from the left
- 19:13Speaker 2: side right now, his swing is so sweet. It's he's
- 19:16Speaker 2: taking balls inside out, hitting it through the six hole
- 19:18Speaker 2: in the first inning for an RBI. Then he's going
- 19:20Speaker 2: to the other side of the plate, hitting homers from
- 19:22Speaker 2: the right side. It's just he looks. He looks great.
- 19:24Speaker 2: And then we've talked about multiple times where would this
- 19:27Speaker 2: team be without Jeremiah Jackson, But he's he just seems
- 19:31Speaker 2: to step up when there's guys on base. It seems
- 19:33Speaker 2: like every time he has an opportunity to knock a
- 19:34Speaker 2: guy in, he has a big hit. And it's he
- 19:37Speaker 2: showed it again today with the grand Slam, and that
- 19:39Speaker 2: was those runs were huge to extend the lead to
- 19:41Speaker 2: where it was didn't have to use their top leverage
- 19:44Speaker 2: arms there at the end of the game, and it
- 19:45Speaker 2: really helps them moving into the series against New York.
- 19:48Speaker 2: So runs like that are just great to have, and
- 19:50Speaker 2: he continues to have a phenomenal season so far.
- 19:54Speaker 3: It's unbelievable.
- 19:55Speaker 4: And he already has more RBI steve than he did
- 19:58Speaker 4: last year during his run with the Orioles, which he
- 20:01Speaker 4: played substantially more games than just the twenty nine that
- 20:05Speaker 4: he's been in so far. And Adley, it's been it's
- 20:10Speaker 4: been such a great, great start for Adley Rutchman. You know,
- 20:14Speaker 4: I saw a stat earlier today following the first game
- 20:20Speaker 4: where he's the first catcher with ten plus extra base
- 20:24Speaker 4: hits fifteen plus RBIs in his first sixteen games to
- 20:27Speaker 4: open a season since Will Smith in twenty nineteen. So
- 20:31Speaker 4: that just tells you what type of start Adley Rutchman
- 20:34Speaker 4: is off to this year. And he's got to be
- 20:37Speaker 4: playing with so much confidence right now, Brad.
- 20:40Speaker 3: And it really appears like it where.
- 20:44Speaker 4: The last year and a half prior to this that
- 20:47Speaker 4: wasn't Adley Rutchman. It just didn't look like that guy
- 20:50Speaker 4: from twenty twenty two through the first half of twenty
- 20:53Speaker 4: twenty four. And we know they's dealt with injuries, the
- 20:56Speaker 4: hand injury in twenty four of the Obleaku's last season
- 20:59Speaker 4: where I think he was pressing. And you know, even
- 21:03Speaker 4: last year it looked like he was coming out of
- 21:04Speaker 4: in June and that's when he sustained the oblique injury.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Where he's got to be playing with just so much confidence.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah, he looks like the All Star catcher. Everybody expects
- 21:14Speaker 2: him to be one of the best in the league,
- 21:16Speaker 2: and he's playing with huge confidence. You can tell it
- 21:18Speaker 2: doesn't matter the count. And they even said today in
- 21:20Speaker 2: the broadcast he's swinging earlier in the count that he
- 21:22Speaker 2: normally has, so that that to me shows confidence when
- 21:25Speaker 2: you're swinging early in the count, not afraid to go
- 21:27Speaker 2: and attack pitches early in the count as opposed to
- 21:30Speaker 2: seeing a couple of pitches, because it just means you're hot.
- 21:32Speaker 2: It means you're seeing the ball well, you know what
- 21:34Speaker 2: you're looking for, and when you get it, whether it's
- 21:36Speaker 2: the first pitcher, it's the fifth pitch of that bat,
- 21:38Speaker 2: you're ready to jump on it. And that's what he's doing.
- 21:40Speaker 2: He looks great. Would love to see him, in saying Besilo,
- 21:43Speaker 2: getting the lineup together more often because both of them
- 21:46Speaker 2: right now, I feel I could carry the offense themselves
- 21:49Speaker 2: with the swings they're putting on the ball. But it's
- 21:51Speaker 2: great to see Ali back to the catch. Everybody sees
- 21:53Speaker 2: him being right now. Defensively, he's been phenomenal to so
- 21:56Speaker 2: it's just great seeing him play well and really be
- 21:59Speaker 2: the captain of the team.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Before the doubleheader today, with the bases loaded this year
- 22:06Speaker 1: as a team, the Oriols were batting three thirty three,
- 22:09Speaker 1: seventh best in the majors ops with bases loaded nine
- 22:14Speaker 1: eighty eight, fifth best before they hit two Grand Slams.
- 22:19Speaker 1: So we'd check those stats in the morning and see
- 22:21Speaker 1: it might be first for all we know. So those
- 22:23Speaker 1: are good numbers. They're doing some clutch things with the
- 22:26Speaker 1: bases loaded, and yet they do take minus one and
- 22:30Speaker 1: the one lost column into New York. Game two was ugly,
- 22:34Speaker 1: and that's what it was called by their manager. We'll
- 22:37Speaker 1: touch on that in a moment On Birdland Territory.

- 23:00Speaker 1: Like with Chris Bassett's comments, I think we're all going
- 23:02Speaker 1: to like the fact that Magic Craig Albert has set
- 23:05Speaker 1: of Game two, and I think it was mostly talking
- 23:07Speaker 1: about the defense. He could have been talking about the
- 23:09Speaker 1: game overall. The eleven to five loss ugly unacceptable. I
- 23:15Speaker 1: like that, guys. He didn't throw anybody under the boss,
- 23:17Speaker 1: he didn't call anybody by name. He just said that
- 23:20Speaker 1: performance is not acceptable for the Orioles and the team
- 23:23Speaker 1: has to figure out a way to clean that up.
- 23:25Speaker 1: In a hurry play like that in the Bronx, it
- 23:28Speaker 1: will be continued to be ugly.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I think once again, I think it's another on
- 23:34Speaker 2: purpose thing. He's not just going to throw that stuff
- 23:36Speaker 2: out there unless he wants to. It's either he wants
- 23:39Speaker 2: them to see it, wants them to read it, and
- 23:41Speaker 2: just know that he told everybody it's unacceptable. It's not
- 23:44Speaker 2: acceptable to have a game like they had today. Like
- 23:46Speaker 2: he said, he knows the second game of the doubleheader,
- 23:49Speaker 2: but it just was not not the start they were
- 23:51Speaker 2: looking for, and to get behind as bad as they
- 23:53Speaker 2: did early on in that game, it just can't continue.
- 23:56Speaker 2: And the inconsistency kind of just crept its head up
- 23:58Speaker 2: there a little bit. Right when you they're gonna come
- 24:00Speaker 2: out and they're gonna have this great start, they're went
- 24:02Speaker 2: out away from getting out of the inning with no
- 24:04Speaker 2: runs and they end up giving up a five or
- 24:06Speaker 2: six spot in the first inning, and it's just you
- 24:08Speaker 2: get behind like that and it's really hard to come
- 24:10Speaker 2: back from. He was right, it's unacceptable to start games
- 24:13Speaker 2: like that. And even just watching it, if I had
- 24:17Speaker 2: wasn't listening to the broadcast, it just looked sloppy. It
- 24:20Speaker 2: looked a little sluggish, and it's exactly what happened in
- 24:23Speaker 2: that first inning.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Five unearned runs were scored between the two games and
- 24:29Speaker 4: the doubleheader.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Five. That's way too much.
- 24:32Speaker 4: And Brad, you mentioned that first inning where Brandon Young, look,
- 24:36Speaker 4: it was a really tough start for him.
- 24:37Speaker 3: There's no way around it, giving up ten hits.
- 24:39Speaker 4: And initially the Jeremiah Jackson play that ended up getting
- 24:44Speaker 4: behind him wasn't ruled in error. I was like, man,
- 24:46Speaker 4: that was a very gracious ruling by the official scorer,
- 24:49Speaker 4: but then it was changed and three of Brandon Young's
- 24:53Speaker 4: ten runs given up were unearned.
- 24:56Speaker 3: But they just crush you.
- 24:58Speaker 4: And when you think of where this team is at, obviously.
- 25:03Speaker 3: They are far from firing on all cylinders.
- 25:06Speaker 4: You can't give free runs, you can't give an extra
- 25:11Speaker 4: ninety feet to base runners. You can't make these elementary
- 25:16Speaker 4: mistakes because they just come back to bite you in
- 25:19Speaker 4: the butt.
- 25:19Speaker 3: It's just when.
- 25:21Speaker 4: Things aren't clicking and they start to really snowball like that.
- 25:26Speaker 4: That game today, the second one was very reminiscent of
- 25:30Speaker 4: games last year where when you find yourself in a
- 25:34Speaker 4: five to nothing hole before you even take an at bat, damn, Like,
- 25:39Speaker 4: it's just hard human nature. I'm not saying these guys
- 25:42Speaker 4: are thinking that, but it's hard thinking like, oh, well,
- 25:44Speaker 4: I guess it's onto the Bronx.
- 25:46Speaker 3: You know, we got a four game series.
- 25:47Speaker 4: Like, it's hard to dig out of that hole immediately.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Yeah, it is. It's it's really tough when you get down.
- 25:55Speaker 2: It's tough when you get down two nothing, three nothing,
- 25:57Speaker 2: because you just then you just know you have to
- 25:59Speaker 2: you have to call so much tougher to get back
- 26:01Speaker 2: in these games. And like you said, with the Division
- 26:03Speaker 2: games coming up, especially on the road, it gets even
- 26:06Speaker 2: that much more tough. And having an anything like that today,
- 26:09Speaker 2: obviously you hope it doesn't happen again. But like I said,
- 26:13Speaker 2: I think it it was just so I think it
- 26:15Speaker 2: was even more disheartening as the game went along because
- 26:17Speaker 2: they put together so many good at bats late and
- 26:20Speaker 2: they scratch across a couple of runs, but it was
- 26:22Speaker 2: all or not, and it's like, you just wish that
- 26:24Speaker 2: instead of the five runs, it was three runs, and
- 26:26Speaker 2: then instead of ten it was seven eight runs, because
- 26:30Speaker 2: I just feel like they were one swing away from
- 26:32Speaker 2: making that game eleven eight there in the seventh or
- 26:33Speaker 2: eighth inning, and when you're just so far behind, it's like,
- 26:37Speaker 2: you know, the grand slaying puts you down three and
- 26:39Speaker 2: you still have to get three more runs. So it's
- 26:41Speaker 2: just like it just kind of snowballs, like you said,
- 26:43Speaker 2: and it just kind of puts this mental block. They're
- 26:45Speaker 2: probably not thinking about it a ton, but when you're
- 26:47Speaker 2: down five to nothing in the first you know, and
- 26:50Speaker 2: you know the game is going to have to take
- 26:52Speaker 2: a kind of a crazy turn for you to get
- 26:54Speaker 2: back in it, and you're trying to put up a
- 26:55Speaker 2: couple in that first inning, and is that as you
- 26:57Speaker 2: going in to the second you're still down five to nothing.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Now it's really on top of your head. Okay, we
- 27:01Speaker 2: got to get going here, and it just makes it
- 27:03Speaker 2: tough to win major league games that way.
- 27:06Speaker 1: So let's end the show be full circle where we started.
- 27:09Speaker 1: Oriols Yankees twenty and eleven, New York first place, ten
- 27:12Speaker 1: and two in their last twelve. Hopefully the Oriols don't
- 27:15Speaker 1: make me eat these words. But in recent years, when
- 27:18Speaker 1: I see the Oriols play the Yankees in the Bronx,
- 27:21Speaker 1: I see a team that's not scared to see the pinstripes.
- 27:24Speaker 1: I don't see that with every team in the American League.
- 27:27Speaker 1: I have seen it with this one. What it will
- 27:29Speaker 1: be really big this weekend is if one of the stars,
- 27:32Speaker 1: Gunner Alonso Ward, does something big early, maybe they get
- 27:37Speaker 1: a lead, and maybe they roll through a good weekend.
- 27:40Speaker 5: That's the hope in Berdland, I think.
- 27:42Speaker 4: And Steve, you brought up the numbers earlier, and even
- 27:45Speaker 4: I know they had a losing record in twenty twenty two,
- 27:48Speaker 4: but I feel like later on in the year they
- 27:50Speaker 4: started to win some games against the Yankees, and I'm
- 27:52Speaker 4: with you one hundred percent.
- 27:54Speaker 3: For whatever reason, in twenty three, twenty four.
- 27:58Speaker 4: Maybe even the beginning of last year, I think I
- 28:00Speaker 4: remember them winning a series early on in April, despite
- 28:04Speaker 4: them off to a rough start. They play the Yankees well,
- 28:09Speaker 4: they're not intimidated by New York and you'd like to
- 28:14Speaker 4: see that carry over into this season. And look, I'm
- 28:18Speaker 4: sure the new guys like Pete he's gonna be fired
- 28:20Speaker 4: up to go against the Yankees for the first time
- 28:22Speaker 4: as an oreo. I know Bassett pitched today, but you
- 28:25Speaker 4: think of all of these new players get indoctrinated into
- 28:29Speaker 4: this rivalry that was red hot, especially in twenty twenty four,
- 28:33Speaker 4: with bullpens clearing, benches clearing multiple times that season, Like
- 28:39Speaker 4: if you can't get up for the Yankees, man, come.
- 28:41Speaker 2: On, Yeah, that's what I think it is. I think
- 28:44Speaker 2: it's it's just excitement in the air. It's like I said,
- 28:47Speaker 2: it's New York on a Friday night. It's just exciting.
- 28:50Speaker 2: It's the stands are going to be packed and there
- 28:53Speaker 2: they might be ruining against you, but you just hear
- 28:55Speaker 2: noise and you hear excitement and it's loud and it's
- 28:58Speaker 2: I always love pitching there when I got a chance.
- 29:00Speaker 2: I don't know if I had great numbers when I did,
- 29:02Speaker 2: but it was still just a great place. It's a
- 29:04Speaker 2: great atmosphere. It's it's what baseball should be, and it's
- 29:07Speaker 2: a lot of fun to go there. And like you said,
- 29:09Speaker 2: hopefully they can get off to a hot start and
- 29:11Speaker 2: just kind of continue it. And I really hope the
- 29:13Speaker 2: bullpen shows up this weekend really kind of sets a
- 29:15Speaker 2: statement where get some leads, hold it and just don't
- 29:18Speaker 2: give that offense even a chance to really make any
- 29:21Speaker 2: noise and come back. I think that'd be a great
- 29:23Speaker 2: statement to make early on in the season and kind
- 29:26Speaker 2: of just move it forward where you know, you got
- 29:28Speaker 2: to get a lead in order to beat this oriol team.
- 29:30Speaker 2: And it's probably the bullpen side of myself coming out,
- 29:33Speaker 2: but it's just that those things are Those kinds of
- 29:35Speaker 2: games are awesome in the Bronx and you have a lead,
- 29:37Speaker 2: you shut them down. There's nothing better than hearing the
- 29:39Speaker 2: booze after a win. And hopefully they go in there
- 29:42Speaker 2: and kind of just stick it to them a little
- 29:45Speaker 2: bit and take three out of four this weekend at least,
- 29:46Speaker 2: and that would be a fun weekend for Baltimore.
- 29:50Speaker 5: Let's see how it goes.
- 29:52Speaker 1: Birdland advantage Yankees on the record on the stats they
- 29:57Speaker 1: got Thursday off while the Oriols played a doubleheader.
- 30:00Speaker 5: They're sitting at home.
- 30:01Speaker 1: The Oriols have to get up there Thursday night, so
- 30:03Speaker 1: everything is tilting New York's way. But what will happen
- 30:07Speaker 1: when the games start. It's two teams that want to win,
- 30:10Speaker 1: and let's see, it's gonna be fascinating. And when we
- 30:12Speaker 1: talk to you again, it'll be after Sunday's game. Three
- 30:15Speaker 1: out of four they'll play in the Bronx. So guys,
- 30:18Speaker 1: enjoy the games. We'll see in a couple of days.
- 30:21Speaker 1: And same to everybody viewing today. Thanks for subscribing and

- 30:34Speaker 1: couple of days with another edition of Birdland Territory
