- 0:16Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Mic Drop podcast. I'm
- 0:21Speaker 1: Sari Beliak, your host, and we're off to a good
- 0:25Speaker 1: start already. I'm so excited because The comedian that we
- 0:29Speaker 1: have this week is not only super hilarious and funny,
- 0:32Speaker 1: he's also a friend of mine. At least I think
- 0:36Speaker 1: we're friends. I hope so. Maybe it's just like a
- 0:38Speaker 1: parasocial relationship online. I'm so excited. Please welcome Ryan Rogers. Yay!
- 0:44Speaker 2: My God, thank you for having me. Let me clear
- 0:46Speaker 2: that up top that we are friends and I absolutely
- 0:49Speaker 2: adore you. You are one of the, especially in standup comedy,
- 0:53Speaker 2: you don't meet people off the bat who are so
- 0:55Speaker 2: kind and warm and like carry the light that you do.
- 0:58Speaker 2: And you're wonderful. Big fan.
- 0:59Speaker 1: I'll be doing the complimenting here and making people uncomfortable.
- 1:05Speaker 1: This is the Sari show. I'm so excited that you're
- 1:10Speaker 1: here and that you're coming to visit us in Chandler.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Have you ever been to Arizona before? Have you performed
- 1:16Speaker 1: in Arizona yet?
- 1:19Speaker 2: I thought I hadn't. I was like, well, I've never
- 1:22Speaker 2: been to Arizona. This is my first time. I'm so excited.
- 1:24Speaker 2: My husband was like, no, dumbass. We went to the
- 1:27Speaker 2: Grand Canyon. I was like, oh, you're so right. I
- 1:31Speaker 2: forgot that when we moved from San Francisco to New
- 1:34Speaker 2: Orleans during the pandemic, that we had done a lot
- 1:36Speaker 2: of cross-country sightseeing and stuff. And so that was one
- 1:40Speaker 2: of our stops. And I completely blocked that out. But yes,
- 1:44Speaker 2: I've been to Arizona. I never first came to comedy, though.
- 1:46Speaker 2: This is my first time.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Oh, that's very exciting. So are you from New Orleans?
- 1:52Speaker 1: I was thinking you are originally from New Orleans. Is
- 1:55Speaker 1: that right?
- 1:56Speaker 2: That's right. I was born and raised in New Orleans,
- 1:58Speaker 2: which a lot of people don't know people can be
- 2:00Speaker 2: from here. It's kind of like Vegas, where you can
- 2:02Speaker 2: be from New Orleans. Yes, I was born and raised
- 2:05Speaker 2: in the city. Hurricane Katrina was my senior year in
- 2:08Speaker 2: high school. So I bounced around a little bit after that.
- 2:11Speaker 2: I stayed in Louisiana for college and then stuck around,
- 2:15Speaker 2: worked here in the advertising industry for a bit. And
- 2:18Speaker 2: then around 2017, moved to San Francisco and worked for Google. Oh, wow.
- 2:29Speaker 2: And I worked for Google Ads and YouTube. And I
- 2:33Speaker 2: was the messaging lead on the 2018 Global Google Pride campaign.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And then I was a creative director at Pandora, the
- 2:39Speaker 2: music app. And then I've since worked in some kind
- 2:43Speaker 2: of advertising capacity as a day job.
- 2:45Speaker 1: Oh, wow. So you've had like real grownup jobs.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Yeah, I have, whether I like it or not.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Not just the comedian, which I feel like is like a,
- 2:55Speaker 1: it's like the child's dream, you know, like working for
- 2:58Speaker 1: chicken fingers and tickets. Like you've had like legit good jobs.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I have. I'm very proud of my resume and my portfolio.
- 3:08Speaker 2: It's taken a lot of work. I had a very
- 3:10Speaker 2: unhealthy relationship with work and my relationship with stand-up comedy
- 3:13Speaker 2: is the same and requires the same discipline to pull
- 3:17Speaker 2: back and restructure and find some harmony. But it's always
- 3:24Speaker 2: been that way with me in my career. I throw
- 3:26Speaker 2: myself into it and then my significant other or family
- 3:29Speaker 2: or whatever has to check me quite often to find
- 3:33Speaker 2: the balance. Yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 1: One thing I remember, so I initially saw you, I
- 3:37Speaker 1: met you at Altercation Comedy Festival. Shout out JT Haberset.
- 3:42Speaker 1: That's a wonderful festival in Austin. I don't remember if
- 3:45Speaker 1: it was two years ago or three years ago that
- 3:47Speaker 1: I met you.
- 3:48Speaker 2: I think it's got to be two because I've only
- 3:52Speaker 2: done two. Did you do two years in a row?
- 3:55Speaker 1: I did.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I had so much fun the first time I needed
- 3:59Speaker 2: to come back. And so I got to headline this
- 4:02Speaker 2: previous October and it was, I can't say enough good
- 4:05Speaker 2: things about JT and that festival, you know, the vibes
- 4:08Speaker 2: at that festival are like the, I think it's one
- 4:10Speaker 2: of the best comedy festivals in America, hands down. It
- 4:13Speaker 2: has to be.
- 4:14Speaker 1: It's definitely a special place for like, I mean, I,
- 4:17Speaker 1: I was going to say for old Austin, I have
- 4:20Speaker 1: no business saying that. Cause I obviously don't know much
- 4:24Speaker 1: about the scene beforehand, but JT is actually in Phoenix
- 4:28Speaker 1: right now. And I got to hang out with him and,
- 4:31Speaker 1: He was like, you know, we were talking about the
- 4:33Speaker 1: festival and that it's like kind of this like remaining,
- 4:36Speaker 1: holding on, keeping the like old part of Austin before,
- 4:41Speaker 1: I guess it became kind of the like Kill Tony
- 4:44Speaker 1: and what it is now.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It shocked me too, because I still try to work
- 4:51Speaker 2: at other clubs after all. I made the mistake last year.
- 4:55Speaker 2: of when we met that year where you were recording
- 4:58Speaker 2: your album, I believe. And I made the mistake of
- 5:01Speaker 2: like overbooking myself and not really enjoying the festival for
- 5:04Speaker 2: what it was. And so I corrected that this year
- 5:07Speaker 2: and I headlined the first night and I stuck around
- 5:10Speaker 2: the entire weekend and I went to everything. But I
- 5:12Speaker 2: was shocked to learn that a lot of the Austin
- 5:15Speaker 2: comics who do Creek and Cave and Mothership, God forbid,
- 5:19Speaker 2: or Sunset Strip had no idea what altercation was. And
- 5:21Speaker 2: I was like, this is the, what are you talking about?
- 5:24Speaker 2: This is by far the best opportunity for comedians in Austin.
- 5:27Speaker 2: I love it so much.
- 5:29Speaker 1: It's so fun. Cause it feels like, uh, just like
- 5:32Speaker 1: a family reunion of like weirdos and weirdos. It's not
- 5:39Speaker 1: like an industry festival. There's definitely some where it's like,
- 5:42Speaker 1: if you're trying to be seen or you're trying to
- 5:44Speaker 1: like network and work with an agent, it's not, I
- 5:47Speaker 1: don't feel like it's one of those, but, But you
- 5:52Speaker 1: meet just like the nicest people and you see the
- 5:56Speaker 1: best lineups.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Of- The comedians are so funny.
- 6:00Speaker 1: Unique up and coming people. Yeah. It's always a good
- 6:06Speaker 1: time there.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I wear my altercation status like a badge of honor. Really? Yeah. Well,
- 6:12Speaker 2: in October, in the same month, I did altercation and
- 6:16Speaker 2: skank fest. Mm-hmm. And it was polar opposite vibes. And
- 6:21Speaker 2: it just made me appreciate altercation so much more. I
- 6:25Speaker 2: just was, I carry it in my heart. I think
- 6:27Speaker 2: it's a wonderful place that blows me away every time.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Yeah. I remember from the first year you were talking
- 6:36Speaker 1: back to your jobs, your resume, you talked about on
- 6:41Speaker 1: stage being a yoga teacher.
- 6:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 6:45Speaker 1: And I remember that because I also started as a
- 6:47Speaker 1: yoga teacher. But you had a hilarious story about, well,
- 6:53Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't want to spoil it for
- 6:55Speaker 1: you if it's like material you're still doing. But it
- 6:57Speaker 1: was so funny talking about like teaching while you were
- 7:02Speaker 1: high out of your mind.
- 7:04Speaker 2: That is true. I wish I wish I were joking
- 7:07Speaker 2: about that. But yeah, you being a yoga teacher, I've
- 7:10Speaker 2: never heard anything less surprising.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Really? Yeah.
- 7:13Speaker 2: Of course you were.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Yeah, dude.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Come on. Have you met you?
- 7:16Speaker 1: Do you mean that in a nice way?
- 7:18Speaker 2: I mean it as the highest compliment. I mean that.
- 7:22Speaker 2: I think, I don't know. Yeah, but when I was
- 7:26Speaker 2: living in San Francisco at the time and teaching yoga
- 7:28Speaker 2: and I'd gone through teacher training, but I was at
- 7:30Speaker 2: the height of like my cocaine addiction. I hadn't gotten
- 7:33Speaker 2: sober yet. I've been sober for five years now from
- 7:35Speaker 2: like drugs and alcohol. But at the time it was
- 7:38Speaker 2: like real bad. but I was like doing Coke and
- 7:41Speaker 2: then like teaching yoga, which is like the craziest shit
- 7:44Speaker 2: anyone could do. It was, it was really bad. And
- 7:48Speaker 2: it's like, it is a story to be honest, like
- 7:50Speaker 2: a lot of those jokes about my addiction come from
- 7:53Speaker 2: a serious place of like sadness and darkness and like
- 7:56Speaker 2: not a proud period of my life. But when I
- 7:59Speaker 2: started doing standup, I actually started, I've only been doing
- 8:02Speaker 2: standup for like maybe four and a half years. I've
- 8:05Speaker 2: been doing it that though. Yeah, I know. I'm really good.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Aren't you impressed?
- 8:08Speaker 1: You're really good.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yeah. Thank you. But I, it's, I started doing standup
- 8:13Speaker 2: the week I got sober. I had like checked into,
- 8:17Speaker 2: I started going to NA, Narcotics Anonymous. And that same
- 8:20Speaker 2: week I was like, I hit my first mic and
- 8:22Speaker 2: it was over, but I took it really seriously. So
- 8:24Speaker 2: I processed a lot of my addiction stuff through standup
- 8:27Speaker 2: where those are some of the first jokes I really wrote,
- 8:28Speaker 2: like in my first year of comedy. about doing cocaine
- 8:32Speaker 2: on you, uh, doing, teaching yoga on cocaine and like
- 8:34Speaker 2: doing coke off of my phone and then realizing we
- 8:37Speaker 2: were on Facebook live. Like those are all true stories
- 8:39Speaker 2: that I have made. I've made more accessible and like
- 8:42Speaker 2: palatable to an audience, but yeah, it's all true. It
- 8:45Speaker 2: helped me process it. It helped me, it helped heal
- 8:47Speaker 2: my marriage and like come to terms with some of
- 8:51Speaker 2: the crazy shit I did in my active addiction, but
- 8:55Speaker 2: make it, make it for people. And you have no
- 8:58Speaker 2: idea how many, I mean, you do, you're a comic,
- 9:00Speaker 2: how sometimes shit reaches people and you don't, you don't
- 9:03Speaker 2: mean for it to, but some people come up after
- 9:05Speaker 2: shows and they're like, dude, me too. Like I've been
- 9:07Speaker 2: clean for 20 years or whatever. That sounded a lot
- 9:10Speaker 2: like me. That happens all the time.
- 9:13Speaker 1: It's amazing to me. I mean, to know that you've
- 9:15Speaker 1: only been in it for such a short time, but
- 9:19Speaker 1: that you started comedy right around the same time. Like, Obviously,
- 9:24Speaker 1: I'm sure you've been to a lot of mics and
- 9:26Speaker 1: somebody is like, hey, I just, I'm going through a
- 9:29Speaker 1: divorce and this is my therapy. Or like, I'm gonna,
- 9:32Speaker 1: that's insane that you actually used comedy as like a,
- 9:38Speaker 1: I don't, coping mechanism or a way to like get
- 9:40Speaker 1: through all that.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Totally.
- 9:42Speaker 1: It seems like it's going very well for you.
- 9:46Speaker 2: I think that's very sweet. I try to do, some
- 9:49Speaker 2: of the harder things that I have to face are,
- 9:52Speaker 2: And a lot of times challenges that are happening inside
- 9:55Speaker 2: of my marriage or with friends or with work, I
- 9:59Speaker 2: have to. there's no other choice I have to process
- 10:02Speaker 2: it through like make it a bit you have to
- 10:05Speaker 2: make this a bit you have to figure it out
- 10:07Speaker 2: because that way you'll get over it quicker that I
- 10:10Speaker 2: mean it's selfish but it is also like We have
- 10:13Speaker 2: to find where this is funny. And usually I can't,
- 10:16Speaker 2: I mean, it's crazy to go up on stage today
- 10:18Speaker 2: after getting like fired from a job and like try
- 10:20Speaker 2: to process it on stage. You're not ready yet, but
- 10:22Speaker 2: you are ready to like write it, write it out.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And over time develop it. And over time come to
- 10:28Speaker 2: terms with it through like the literal processing of the event.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'm, I'm so fascinated by that. Cause I feel like there,
- 10:35Speaker 1: there's been like heavy stuff that I've gone through and
- 10:37Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm not ready to talk about it yet.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And it'll be a while. Cause I'm like, I don't
- 10:41Speaker 1: know how I feel about it yet.
- 10:43Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
- 10:44Speaker 1: I'm still, so it's like, how do I expect an
- 10:46Speaker 1: audience full of people that are like maybe half paying
- 10:48Speaker 1: attention for them to be like, Oh, I get it.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And I love it.
- 10:53Speaker 2: It's like anything though. I respect that. I think that's,
- 10:56Speaker 2: that's what your reaction is like a normal person. Like that,
- 11:00Speaker 2: that is what you should do is that is not
- 11:02Speaker 2: like throw it out there. But I try to like
- 11:04Speaker 2: a lot of like, I'm not an actor, but like,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I've heard that a lot of acting and improv and
- 11:11Speaker 2: whatever is making decisions. And so I will often make
- 11:14Speaker 2: up my mind about how I feel immediately and be like,
- 11:17Speaker 2: it's like, it's the cancer in me. It's being like emotional,
- 11:20Speaker 2: but also like, how do I cut through this? And
- 11:22Speaker 2: so a lot of times I'll just decide immediately, like
- 11:25Speaker 2: I'm mad about being laid off and here's why. And
- 11:27Speaker 2: I'm going to start from there. I don't have time
- 11:30Speaker 2: to flip flop on like, how do I feel about
- 11:31Speaker 2: it personally? Only because I'm like, I need to get
- 11:35Speaker 2: over this or else I get over, I get consumed
- 11:37Speaker 2: by my emotions. So I try to like cut through
- 11:40Speaker 2: it and like process it.
- 11:42Speaker 1: I'm surprised cancer. I think I would have guessed Gemini,
- 11:44Speaker 1: but I, I don't.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Have it in my chart. Isn't that crazy?
- 11:48Speaker 1: None at all.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I identify a lot of with like, if I'm reading,
- 11:52Speaker 2: which I'm not very into astrology, but if I happen
- 11:56Speaker 2: to come across like a scannable, whatever's going on, I
- 12:00Speaker 2: identify with the Gemini stuff a lot. I'm quite often.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I'm like, Oh, that sounds like me. That sounds like
- 12:04Speaker 2: what I'm going through. But my chart is I'm Cancer, Sun, Leo, Moon, Sag, Rising.
- 12:11Speaker 1: Okay, the Leo, Moon. Yeah. My friend Stina is like
- 12:16Speaker 1: an astrology maven. And I could see her just being like, yes,
- 12:20Speaker 1: the Leo, I see it. You're like such a big performer.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I don't remember like what the bits were, but you
- 12:28Speaker 1: were like doing act outs when you were talking about
- 12:30Speaker 1: teaching yoga. And it was just like, like snorting cocaine
- 12:34Speaker 1: and like, okay guys, breathe. And I was like.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Here's how that, here's how that joke actually started, which
- 12:40Speaker 2: is way funnier than the truth. The joke actually started
- 12:43Speaker 2: because I found out that David Fincher directed the music
- 12:48Speaker 2: video for Vogue by Madonna. That's how the joke started.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And I thought that was crazy. And then it led
- 12:54Speaker 2: me down like a rabbit hole of David Fincher's filmography
- 12:56Speaker 2: and the music videos he's directed. And then like Spike Jones,
- 13:00Speaker 2: the music videos he's directed and Francis Lawrence, who are
- 13:02Speaker 2: Do you know who Francis Lawrence is?
- 13:04Speaker 1: No.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Francis Lawrence directed the Hunger Games franchise. He's a wonderful director.
- 13:09Speaker 2: But if you go to his IMDb, he has also
- 13:11Speaker 2: directed every music video you've ever heard of. Like literally
- 13:15Speaker 2: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Garbage. No, seriously. But like David
- 13:19Speaker 2: Fincher had also directed that Vogue, the Vogue music video.
- 13:24Speaker 2: David Fincher directed it. He also directed Suit and Tie
- 13:28Speaker 2: by Justin Timberlake. But he's also the director of like
- 13:32Speaker 2: the social network and like Zodiac and Benjamin Button and whatever.
- 13:37Speaker 2: So the joke started because I wanted to deliver that
- 13:40Speaker 2: information to an audience because I thought it was fucking crazy.
- 13:43Speaker 2: So I wrapped it inside of, oh, when I was
- 13:46Speaker 2: doing cocaine, I also taught yoga and I would tell
- 13:49Speaker 2: the class, I would interject, I would interject coke head
- 13:53Speaker 2: facts into my yoga class. So that's how it started
- 13:56Speaker 2: because I was like, well, I think this is insane.
- 13:59Speaker 2: And I think this premise I can like wedge. And
- 14:01Speaker 2: sometimes that happens, you know that, where you'll marry two
- 14:04Speaker 2: ideas just to like build out a joke.
- 14:08Speaker 1: I also just love the idea, because I don't know
- 14:10Speaker 1: if there's a lot of comedians that come from a
- 14:13Speaker 1: yoga background, but I love the idea as comics, we're
- 14:16Speaker 1: always taking any opportunity to run bits, like wherever, whenever.
- 14:21Speaker 1: And I love thinking that it's like a yoga teacher
- 14:25Speaker 1: picturing just like I'm gonna sneak in my jokes and
- 14:28Speaker 1: see but also the fact that you were blown out
- 14:30Speaker 1: of your mind.
- 14:31Speaker 2: On cocaine is like I know.
- 14:33Speaker 1: Even somehow even more magical of just like picturing a
- 14:36Speaker 1: room full of people in the bay area like you
- 14:39Speaker 1: know doing their sun salutations just kind of like what.
- 14:42Speaker 2: The fuck really totally I would I would show up
- 14:45Speaker 2: in like a hoodie and running shorts to teach it
- 14:47Speaker 2: I was out of my mind like I did not
- 14:49Speaker 2: know what I was doing Did you ever teach yoga
- 14:52Speaker 2: while you were doing standup? Like in the same time period,
- 14:55Speaker 2: like were you doing standup and teaching at the same time?
- 14:58Speaker 2: That's what I'm trying to say.
- 14:59Speaker 1: There was a little bit of overlap. Like around the
- 15:04Speaker 1: time I started doing comedy, it was like sort of
- 15:07Speaker 1: the end of, of teaching yoga.
- 15:11Speaker 2: Same, but I had just started doing comedy and I
- 15:16Speaker 2: was kind of easing out of yoga and But I
- 15:19Speaker 2: did find it so helpful to go up in front
- 15:22Speaker 2: of a class and talk, not like do dialogue and
- 15:25Speaker 2: queuing for an hour. And then I had to go
- 15:27Speaker 2: on stage and do five minutes. So I was like, oh,
- 15:29Speaker 2: that's nothing. Like to me, I was like, I would use,
- 15:32Speaker 2: I literally, there was a period where there was a
- 15:33Speaker 2: Tuesday night mic. I would teach yoga at the 6 p.m.
- 15:36Speaker 2: class and go straight to the mic. And so I
- 15:38Speaker 2: found it effortless to like do stand up because I
- 15:41Speaker 2: was new at it. So I was like, oh, well,
- 15:43Speaker 2: this is.
- 15:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess in a way there is similarities because
- 15:47Speaker 1: you're not always getting like a response like you're talking
- 15:51Speaker 1: and obviously they're hopefully following the cues, but they're not
- 15:54Speaker 1: like nodding their heads along with what you're saying or reacting.
- 16:02Speaker 1: That's interesting. I hadn't thought of it.
- 16:05Speaker 2: It's true though. I mean, I was going to Narcotics
- 16:07Speaker 2: Anonymous meetings and teaching yoga when I started doing standup
- 16:11Speaker 2: and both of those things fed. Like both of them
- 16:13Speaker 2: were like, I mean, an AA or NA meeting is
- 16:16Speaker 2: the same thing as an open mic. You get a
- 16:18Speaker 2: list and a four minute time limit and you get
- 16:20Speaker 2: a bell and that's it. And like, to be honest,
- 16:23Speaker 2: like a lot of my NA meetings were funnier than
- 16:26Speaker 2: the mic, which isn't a joke. I'm not doing a
- 16:29Speaker 2: bit that is real, but they helped.
- 16:33Speaker 1: Um, from following you on Instagram, your, your social media
- 16:37Speaker 1: is super funny and I, I love that it's very, um,
- 16:41Speaker 1: it's such a tribute to New Orleans. I feel like your,
- 16:43Speaker 1: your comedy is very, it's like a love letter to
- 16:46Speaker 1: New Orleans, but I know recently you were, was it
- 16:50Speaker 1: like an MC for Mardi Gras or?
- 16:52Speaker 2: Not even that. Um, there's an event without getting in
- 16:56Speaker 2: the weeds. There's an event in New Orleans during Mardi
- 16:58Speaker 2: Gras called the greasing of the poles and which happens
- 17:01Speaker 2: at the Royal Sinesta in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street.
- 17:04Speaker 2: And they basically, it was a tactic to grease the
- 17:08Speaker 2: poles in front during Mardi Gras so that people on
- 17:11Speaker 2: Bourbon Street, drunk people, wouldn't climb up them during like
- 17:14Speaker 2: the festivities. So they grease them with Vaseline so people
- 17:17Speaker 2: can't do it. They have since evolved it into a
- 17:19Speaker 2: competition and like a stunt that is sponsored by like
- 17:23Speaker 2: Moet Champagne. And like, it is like a whole thing now.
- 17:26Speaker 2: So I was asked to be a judge this year
- 17:29Speaker 2: There was a wardrobe, and thousands of people come. The
- 17:32Speaker 2: Bourbon Street is packed shoulder to shoulder, literally thousands of people.
- 17:38Speaker 2: And you go up on stage, there's four people, they
- 17:40Speaker 2: grease the poles, you judge them. It's like a fun
- 17:42Speaker 2: kickoff event. The whole thing lasts like an hour and
- 17:44Speaker 2: a half. But there was a wardrobe malfunction from one
- 17:48Speaker 2: of the girls who was greasing. And when it happened,
- 17:50Speaker 2: the host kind of punted, I'll say, to me. It
- 17:55Speaker 2: was like, while we fix that, we're going to hear
- 17:56Speaker 2: some jokes from Ryan Rogers. No prep. Like you would,
- 18:00Speaker 2: anyone would die. He was walking up to me and
- 18:03Speaker 2: I was just like, do not do this. Like in
- 18:05Speaker 2: front of everyone. I was like, don't, don't, don't, don't.
- 18:08Speaker 2: And he just hands me the mic. So I was like,
- 18:10Speaker 2: fuck it. And I just stood up on the chairs
- 18:12Speaker 2: and faced like one foot on each chair facing this
- 18:16Speaker 2: crowd of thousands of people from the judging table. And
- 18:18Speaker 2: I did like, I did like three minutes and just murdered.
- 18:24Speaker 2: Cause I have enough local shit that I can be like,
- 18:27Speaker 2: this part of New Orleans and that part and our
- 18:29Speaker 2: mayor and whatever killing. So the general manager of the
- 18:35Speaker 2: event came up to me as soon as that I
- 18:38Speaker 2: handed the mic back and goes, we'd love for you
- 18:40Speaker 2: to MC next year. Would you be interested in that?
- 18:42Speaker 2: So it was like best case scenario.
- 18:43Speaker 1: That is amazing.
- 18:45Speaker 2: I saw the, it is amazing.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I saw pictures from it and you truly like, you
- 18:49Speaker 1: looked like you're like the mayor, like you're just in
- 18:51Speaker 1: the middle of the crowd. And I was like that.
- 18:53Speaker 2: That was a thank you. That was a, that I
- 18:55Speaker 2: wore the tux that I wore to my wedding. That's
- 18:58Speaker 2: my wedding tux. And I just put a gold crown
- 19:00Speaker 2: on and it was a game time decision because I
- 19:02Speaker 2: was going to wear this whole drag get up. And
- 19:05Speaker 2: I woke up at 5am and start putting on makeup
- 19:07Speaker 2: and I started doing it. And I was like, this
- 19:08Speaker 2: isn't right. I don't, this is not going to be great.
- 19:11Speaker 2: So I straight up was like, you know what? I
- 19:14Speaker 2: think I've got a better idea. So I just did Tuts.
- 19:16Speaker 2: So I look so official and so like cool.
- 19:19Speaker 1: You did.
- 19:19Speaker 2: I know it looks really cool.
- 19:20Speaker 1: When I was saying that I saw you on the
- 19:23Speaker 1: schedule for Mic Drop and I was like, I gotta
- 19:25Speaker 1: reach out to Ryan. And I was like, it's also
- 19:27Speaker 1: the middle of Mardi Gras. So I'll give him some
- 19:28Speaker 1: time to like- I don't drink.
- 19:31Speaker 2: So like, I'm not, I'm not, the funniest part about
- 19:33Speaker 2: it is I was raised in this city and I
- 19:35Speaker 2: am deeply ambivalent about Mardi Gras. I do not give
- 19:39Speaker 2: a shit half the time. It is in the way-
- 19:42Speaker 2: It's so annoying. We live on a parade route, so
- 19:45Speaker 2: I can't escape it. I'm a sober person. There's nothing
- 19:47Speaker 2: for me. I don't give a shit. And now I have, like,
- 19:50Speaker 2: failed up into this, like, king of Mardi Gras status,
- 19:52Speaker 2: what everyone knows me for. And I'm like, I don't
- 19:54Speaker 2: give a shit about this holiday, guys. I just think
- 19:57Speaker 2: it's funny.
- 19:58Speaker 1: Did you get to see some fun stuff? Do you
- 20:01Speaker 1: see people just, like, a titty hanging out, missing.
- 20:05Speaker 2: A shoe, just, like, the.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Totally worst of humanity. Yeah. Yeah.
- 20:11Speaker 2: We, I don't go to the French quarter too much
- 20:13Speaker 2: during Mardi Gras ever. I think that's like the craziest
- 20:16Speaker 2: fucking thing anyone can do, but I live uptown on
- 20:18Speaker 2: a parade route. So there are people in my front yard.
- 20:20Speaker 2: I can watch parades without leaving my living room. Yeah. They,
- 20:23Speaker 2: the big parades roll right by, like I live on
- 20:26Speaker 2: the corner and they're right there. Um, like I'm not,
- 20:29Speaker 2: it's not like blocks away. It's right in my yard.
- 20:31Speaker 2: So I can't escape it, but I do see crazy shit. Um,
- 20:35Speaker 2: but we had my siblings' babies at the house this year.
- 20:38Speaker 2: So it was a very like, oh, there's the chaos
- 20:41Speaker 2: of babies, unless like wasted people are throwing up in
- 20:44Speaker 2: the bathroom. It was a very different, very adult vibe
- 20:47Speaker 2: this year.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Amazing. So great. I love it. We have a segment.
- 20:55Speaker 1: I don't know if I warned you about this, but
- 20:57Speaker 1: we have a little bit of trivia. How do you
- 20:59Speaker 1: feel about that?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Hit me.
- 21:00Speaker 1: It's... I looked him over last night and I was like,
- 21:09Speaker 1: I don't know. These are, you know, it's different questions
- 21:12Speaker 1: each week. I feel like it's going to be a
- 21:17Speaker 1: good one. You do have some sports questions in there.
- 21:19Speaker 1: Are you a sports fan at all?
- 21:22Speaker 2: Couldn't be further from it, but I'm willing to try.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Unless you count drag race as a sport.
- 21:28Speaker 1: I don't think there's any drag questions in there, but
- 21:31Speaker 1: we'll see. So this is our good to know section.
- 21:33Speaker 1: We're starting out strong. Name two of the World War
- 21:39Speaker 1: II Axis powers. Oh, sure.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Italy and Germany.
- 21:47Speaker 1: Okay, Ryan. Okay, Ryan.
- 21:52Speaker 2: I might be gay, but I'm still a white man.
- 21:56Speaker 2: That information is in there. Yeah, I love it. Okay.
- 22:00Speaker 1: I'm so sorry, but we have a sports question for you.
- 22:04Speaker 1: I don't know this. Name a baseball team that has
- 22:08Speaker 1: never won a World Series.
- 22:12Speaker 2: The Angels?
- 22:15Speaker 1: Are they on there? I don't see them on here.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Do you want to try some other?
- 22:21Speaker 2: A baseball team that has never won a World Series. Okay.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Can I say the Oakland A's?
- 22:29Speaker 1: You can. They're also not on this list.
- 22:32Speaker 2: Damn it. Oh, God, I'm so gay.
- 22:36Speaker 1: No. I was like, there's some other California teams on here.
- 22:40Speaker 1: So some of the choices listed here, Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers,
- 22:45Speaker 1: San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Dude, just a list of fucking losers.
- 22:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Terrible. Sorry.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Sorry to any of those teams.
- 23:00Speaker 2: If they're listening, how are you going to dedicate your
- 23:02Speaker 2: life to the most boring sport on the planet and
- 23:04Speaker 2: not even win?
- 23:06Speaker 1: I mean, that's a great, that's a great question.
- 23:08Speaker 2: That's so dumb. What a waste that they got their
- 23:11Speaker 2: big fat asses and they're chewing tobacco and they can't
- 23:13Speaker 2: even fucking win a world series. That sucks. Grow up. Yeah.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Uh, Ryan Rogers, everyone will be, uh, at my cap.
- 23:20Speaker 1: He's actually coming to some, uh, Some spring training games
- 23:24Speaker 1: while he's in town so you can watch for him.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you're from San Diego, tell your team
- 23:30Speaker 2: to do better.
- 23:31Speaker 1: I think the San Francisco Giants, I think they're a team.
- 23:35Speaker 1: And I think that they practice here. So maybe you
- 23:38Speaker 1: can check out a game while you're here.
- 23:39Speaker 2: Actually, I love Minute Maid Park. Is that right? Did
- 23:42Speaker 2: I make that up? I'm pretty sure that's a park.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Is that in Houston?
- 23:46Speaker 1: I've never heard of Minute Maid Park. That sounds like
- 23:48Speaker 1: something you just made up.
- 23:50Speaker 2: Ask me a fucking drag race question, goddamn.
- 23:55Speaker 1: Okay, this is a good one. Who shot JFK? Again,
- 23:58Speaker 1: I don't come up with these questions, but.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It's, okay, damn it.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Or who do you think, who do you think shot JFK?
- 24:06Speaker 2: First of all, the answer is the FBI. However, I
- 24:11Speaker 2: want to say, is it Lee Harvey Oswald? Yeah. No,
- 24:16Speaker 2: is it? Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 1: Yeah. It is. Okay.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Allegedly, anyway. We'll say allegedly. But it could be somebody
- 24:22Speaker 1: from Drag.
- 24:23Speaker 2: Race, maybe. We don't know. Yeah, it was Jada Essence
- 24:27Speaker 2: Hall shot JFK. It's crazy.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It was Katya, I bet. I wish. Okay. I'm so sorry,
- 24:36Speaker 1: but there's another sports question. How many cities have the
- 24:41Speaker 1: Raiders played in?
- 24:42Speaker 2: Detroit? Detroit?
- 24:46Speaker 1: In L.A.? Okay, we got one of them in there.
- 24:51Speaker 1: I feel like that should be... How many?
- 24:57Speaker 2: Is it three or two?
- 24:59Speaker 1: It is three. Okay.
- 25:01Speaker 2: And I would even reword that question like, what cities
- 25:05Speaker 2: has the Raiders, you know, represented?
- 25:08Speaker 1: Because they played everywhere.
- 25:11Speaker 2: Yeah. Is it like... So, L.A.? And, man, this is
- 25:20Speaker 2: killing me. Where? Where are they playing?
- 25:23Speaker 1: Oakland and Las Vegas. I think they're currently in Las Vegas.
- 25:26Speaker 1: Is that right? Yes.
- 25:28Speaker 2: The Oakland Raiders sounds wrong. That sounds wrong. That sounds
- 25:34Speaker 2: like a Utah Jazz situation. Like, something got fucked up
- 25:38Speaker 2: along the way. You know what I'm saying?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 25:42Speaker 2: In New Orleans, we had the Hornets for a while.
- 25:45Speaker 2: Charlotte had the Hornets, and we had them, and then
- 25:46Speaker 2: they went back to Charlotte. But I just found out
- 25:49Speaker 2: that the Charlotte Hornets girls dance team, not girls, I'm sorry.
- 25:52Speaker 2: It's probably more inclusive now. The dance team for the
- 25:55Speaker 2: Hornets is called the Honeybees. How confusing is that?
- 25:58Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
- 25:59Speaker 2: That is pretty confusing. That's wrong.
- 26:01Speaker 1: I think Siri got stuck. No. That's okay. We'll wait
- 26:09Speaker 1: for her to return. But no, I agree with you
- 26:11Speaker 1: that also the Minute Maid park was in Houston. And
- 26:14Speaker 1: you're back!
- 26:15Speaker 2: I'm back.
- 26:15Speaker 1: I could hear you guys. I just was frozen.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Oh, we were killing over here. We were cutting up.
- 26:22Speaker 1: I like to freeze in really unflattering spaces. That's my
- 26:26Speaker 1: favorite on the podcast for people to watch.
- 26:30Speaker 2: People love that.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Yeah, when I was going to school in Santa Cruz,
- 26:34Speaker 1: I remember people, there were like die-hard... Oakland Raiders fans
- 26:39Speaker 1: like that would not you couldn't say anything to them
- 26:42Speaker 1: and they were they were.
- 26:44Speaker 2: Fanatical well tell Oakland that I used to work there
- 26:49Speaker 2: in Oakland for a while at Pandora and I love
- 26:52Speaker 2: their town because they don't call it a city they
- 26:56Speaker 2: call it a town the town of Oakland the city
- 26:58Speaker 2: of San Francisco um see I know that Did you get.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Into like hyphy music when you were there? I feel
- 27:05Speaker 1: like you know a lot about like bounce music and
- 27:07Speaker 1: New Orleans.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Some, I have respect for a lot of the obvious
- 27:13Speaker 2: like Oakland rappers and stuff, but I'm so, I'm so
- 27:17Speaker 2: loyal to like cash money and no limit. I just,
- 27:23Speaker 2: I actually just opened for Whitney Cummings at the joy
- 27:25Speaker 2: theater here. And I was like really stressing about what
- 27:28Speaker 2: my walk-up music was going to be.
- 27:30Speaker 1: I love it.
- 27:31Speaker 2: And then I landed on a song by DJ Jubilee.
- 27:35Speaker 2: It's get it ready, get it ready, get it ready.
- 27:37Speaker 2: I don't know if you guys have that or know that,
- 27:38Speaker 2: but it's like a, it's like a very, very big,
- 27:41Speaker 2: like weddings. Like they played at weddings a lot here
- 27:44Speaker 2: and people lose their shit. And like this, it was,
- 27:47Speaker 2: it was very our coming of age. And so I
- 27:49Speaker 2: lean into that a lot where I'm like, if it's
- 27:51Speaker 2: local and there's like a thousand people, I'm walking out
- 27:55Speaker 2: to a local rap song. I don't care how gay
- 27:56Speaker 2: I am. I don't give a shit. And I grabbed
- 27:59Speaker 2: the mic, because I was going to play some gay
- 28:01Speaker 2: shit to walk up to Whitney Cummings. But then I
- 28:03Speaker 2: was like, now I think this is right. And I
- 28:06Speaker 2: grabbed the mic. It was like 1,200 people. And I
- 28:08Speaker 2: was just like, New Orleans makes some bucking noise. They
- 28:11Speaker 2: lose their mind. And I told the DJ, I'm like,
- 28:13Speaker 2: keep playing it until I cue you. And then I
- 28:14Speaker 2: was like, I requested this song just for you. Stand up.
- 28:17Speaker 2: That's our national anthem. Well, I love that. I know.
- 28:20Speaker 2: I'll pander with music like that. Obvious. It's like a
- 28:23Speaker 2: cheat code. Comics, I don't know. I feel like there's
- 28:25Speaker 2: so many... hats to the system with standup comedy where
- 28:28Speaker 2: like comedians forget that this is a performance.
- 28:32Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:32Speaker 2: It's a performance. People paid money to be here. It's
- 28:34Speaker 2: not just about your setup punchlines and your timing. This
- 28:37Speaker 2: is fun. They want to have fun. They want to
- 28:39Speaker 2: feel included.
- 28:40Speaker 1: They just want to laugh.
- 28:42Speaker 2: They just want to laugh. And I, dude, we can,
- 28:45Speaker 2: we don't have to get into it, but there's so
- 28:46Speaker 2: many like straight white guy open micers. And like, I'm
- 28:49Speaker 2: being very like, how do I put this? I'm boxing
- 28:53Speaker 2: them in, but like, I don't feel bad about it
- 28:55Speaker 2: where it's like, There's so much that like, and it's
- 28:58Speaker 2: not exclusive to them, but they stick out where it's
- 29:00Speaker 2: just like, give these people a fucking show. Give them
- 29:04Speaker 2: a show. Yeah. Come on.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I know.
- 29:07Speaker 2: Where's the joy?
- 29:09Speaker 1: Every once in a while I'm like, hey, remember when
- 29:11Speaker 1: you started comedy because you wanted to make people laugh?
- 29:14Speaker 2: Totally. And it's like sullen, sad boy. Like, and I'm like, ew.
- 29:20Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you have any idea of music, like walk
- 29:24Speaker 1: up music for when you're coming to see us in Chandler?
- 29:27Speaker 2: My go-to lately, and when I say lately, I mean
- 29:29Speaker 2: like maybe the past year, has been bongos.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 29:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Cardi and Megan Thee Stallion. I just
- 29:36Speaker 2: think it's so fun. And you can start it anywhere,
- 29:39Speaker 2: that's why I like it. it as a walk-up song
- 29:40Speaker 2: like yeah if they fuck it up it's okay because
- 29:42Speaker 2: it's fun.
- 29:43Speaker 1: Okay good we'll get it queued up for you for for.
- 29:46Speaker 2: When you when you come see us do you have
- 29:48Speaker 2: a walk-up playlist do.
- 29:51Speaker 1: I personally or like at mic drop um I think
- 29:56Speaker 1: recently the DJ there asked me for a song and
- 30:00Speaker 1: I was like in a weird mood and I asked
- 30:01Speaker 1: for too short, blow the whistle. That's a fun one.
- 30:06Speaker 2: Yeah. This is what I'm talking about. Yeah.
- 30:08Speaker 1: I was really excited. Cause it was like, and I
- 30:11Speaker 1: think they, they were surprised and I was like, I
- 30:14Speaker 1: will wrap the whole song right now. Like forget my time.
- 30:18Speaker 1: But I'm like, how do you not hear that song
- 30:20Speaker 1: and get, get hyped up? I love it.
- 30:23Speaker 2: My first walk up song was, that I chose without
- 30:26Speaker 2: hesitation was Party Up by DMX. I was like, why
- 30:31Speaker 2: wouldn't you use this? It feels like everyone should be
- 30:33Speaker 2: using this. What are you talking about? No one is
- 30:35Speaker 2: doing this. That's crazy. And then I did, go ahead.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Oh, I was going to say, we should just make
- 30:40Speaker 1: a playlist of walk-up songs.
- 30:42Speaker 2: I have one. I'll send it to you.
- 30:46Speaker 1: I worked with Amber Autry last year and she had
- 30:49Speaker 1: like a fire playlist before the show. I think it
- 30:53Speaker 1: was like, I asked her about it and she was like,
- 30:56Speaker 1: it's like the gym baddies. Like everyone was having the
- 30:59Speaker 1: best time just like dancing.
- 31:02Speaker 2: We can't talk about Amber because we'll be here all day.
- 31:05Speaker 2: I love Amber.
- 31:06Speaker 1: We go way back. I met her.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Oh my God. Like when I first started doing comedy,
- 31:13Speaker 2: it's a very long story, but I was producing a
- 31:14Speaker 2: show in Nashville. I asked for some local recs and
- 31:17Speaker 2: she was one of them. And she was like, she
- 31:19Speaker 2: was not the Amber Autry we know today. She was
- 31:21Speaker 2: just as funny, but she had like, she didn't have
- 31:23Speaker 2: hundreds and thousands of followers. You know what I mean?
- 31:25Speaker 2: But you could tell you were like, she's going to
- 31:27Speaker 2: be a star. Easy. So fun. 100%.
- 31:30Speaker 1: No, I met her at a festival in Des Moines, Iowa.
- 31:34Speaker 1: And it was like, white dude, white dude, white, like
- 31:36Speaker 1: the same white dudes over and over. And then she
- 31:39Speaker 1: came up and it was like a burst of energy.
- 31:42Speaker 1: And I was like, Oh my God, this woman is phenomenal.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And I, I bought some of her merch and I
- 31:48Speaker 1: still have it. It's like, I'm like, this is like
- 31:50Speaker 1: collector's item now.
- 31:52Speaker 2: No, for real. There are very few comics that are like,
- 31:55Speaker 2: not very few. That's rude that I've like paid for
- 31:58Speaker 2: their merch and I like wear it proudly, but like
- 32:00Speaker 2: daily Pope is one of them. Yes.
- 32:02Speaker 1: Yes.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Bailey, I wear her shirt all the time.
- 32:05Speaker 1: Your merch is so sick, too.
- 32:06Speaker 2: It's sick, yeah.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Do you have the Pope one, like the tarot card?
- 32:09Speaker 2: Of course I do. Oh, my God. I wear it
- 32:11Speaker 2: all the time. I might wear it tonight on stage.
- 32:13Speaker 2: I think it's so sick. I think she's cool. I
- 32:15Speaker 2: have this new, I wish I could show you. It's
- 32:18Speaker 2: in my room. But my new merch that I produced
- 32:21Speaker 2: for Skank Fest. Calm down, everyone.
- 32:23Speaker 1: Bring it to Chandler. I will.
- 32:26Speaker 2: It's basically, I have this, there's a designer in Austin
- 32:29Speaker 2: who does really cool custom metal merch. lettering but it's
- 32:32Speaker 2: like top of the line like he can draws it
- 32:35Speaker 2: and it is like it's the best version of like
- 32:38Speaker 2: metal because you know you see really crappy ones it's
- 32:41Speaker 2: amazing but i had this idea for merch for skank
- 32:43Speaker 2: fest for t-shirts like ryan rogers branded on the back
- 32:46Speaker 2: but across the front and like like fuchsia it just
- 32:52Speaker 2: says straight girls and i think it's genius i'm like
- 32:56Speaker 2: everybody would want this straight men straight women lesbians and
- 32:59Speaker 2: gay guys done like we've covered all of our but
- 33:02Speaker 2: it's so smart and a bunch of them sold and
- 33:04Speaker 2: i love them like they're so it just has straight
- 33:06Speaker 2: girls in metal.
- 33:08Speaker 1: All right that's fantastic yeah bring.
- 33:10Speaker 2: It cracked the merch code we did it bring it
- 33:12Speaker 2: i'll bring.
- 33:14Speaker 1: It i love it.
- 33:16Speaker 2: Um so did i fail at this game.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Well, we have a few. There's so many. I don't
- 33:21Speaker 1: know why this is such a sports-heavy week. We'll have
- 33:23Speaker 1: a chat with Carlos. Question number five. How many championships
- 33:28Speaker 1: does Tom Brady have?
- 33:31Speaker 2: Six?
- 33:34Speaker 1: Really close. Seven. Why?
- 33:38Speaker 2: Can we skip the sports ones?
- 33:41Speaker 1: I don't know why I was thinking that.
- 33:44Speaker 2: It's painting me out to be like a dumb bitch. Like,
- 33:46Speaker 2: I don't love this.
- 33:47Speaker 1: No, not at all. There's a Mariah Carey related question
- 33:51Speaker 1: coming up.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Thank God. I've watched this one too.
- 33:55Speaker 1: I'm going to be like, uh, Detroit. Yeah. But first,
- 34:00Speaker 1: how many seasons did Def Comedy Jam have?
- 34:06Speaker 2: On television?
- 34:07Speaker 1: I guess so. I didn't know the answer to this one.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I'm going to say 25.
- 34:10Speaker 1: Um, This, according to this, it says eight seasons. Did
- 34:15Speaker 1: you ever, did you ever watch it?
- 34:17Speaker 2: Some. I am very in my bag. I think it's
- 34:20Speaker 2: Peacock or Paramount has all of the Comedy Central premium
- 34:23Speaker 2: blends and Comedy Central presents. I know it is a,
- 34:27Speaker 2: it is incredible. I don't know why standup comedians aren't
- 34:30Speaker 2: all talking about this. They're all right there. You can
- 34:32Speaker 2: watch like everyone's first Comedy Central 20 minute special right now.
- 34:37Speaker 2: It's amazing. I used to love watching those. Well, it
- 34:41Speaker 2: introduced us to everyone, like us, like that's how I
- 34:44Speaker 2: got exposed to real standup at a young age. And like,
- 34:47Speaker 2: they look and sound exactly the same. It is jarring.
- 34:51Speaker 2: It's really like, I remember the first comedy special that
- 34:54Speaker 2: I ever literally pissed my pants. Literally. I was at,
- 34:59Speaker 2: I had friends sleeping over at my house and I,
- 35:01Speaker 2: we're just watching comedy central. This guy came on and
- 35:04Speaker 2: I just, I remember the bit to this day and I,
- 35:06Speaker 2: I laughed so hard. I like, I was in like
- 35:09Speaker 2: pajama pants, a little boy. And I pissed myself. I
- 35:12Speaker 2: had to get up and change. And it was Brian Posehn.
- 35:14Speaker 2: You know Brian Posehn?
- 35:15Speaker 1: Oh my God, yes. That's who JT opens for.
- 35:19Speaker 2: I ran into Brian Posehn when I was headlining at
- 35:23Speaker 2: some bullshit show in Mobile, Alabama. And he was at
- 35:27Speaker 2: the gig like across the road and we met in
- 35:29Speaker 2: the lobby. And I was just like, we were staying
- 35:32Speaker 2: at the same hotel. This was like six months ago.
- 35:34Speaker 2: This was not long ago. And I told him what
- 35:36Speaker 2: I just told you. I said, you, you were the first,
- 35:39Speaker 2: you did it. Like you made, you fucking cracked me
- 35:42Speaker 2: from a very young age. And he, I'm sure he
- 35:46Speaker 2: thought he was a total weirdo because the producer of
- 35:48Speaker 2: the show texted me and he goes, did you run
- 35:49Speaker 2: into Brian Posehn in the lobby? I go, why, how
- 35:51Speaker 2: do you know that? And he goes, he ran into
- 35:52Speaker 2: some comedian in the lobby and told me about it.
- 35:54Speaker 1: And I was like, Oh God, I was talking about
- 35:57Speaker 1: pissing his pants.
- 35:58Speaker 2: Yeah. He wanted me to piss on his pants. I'm like,
- 36:00Speaker 2: that's not what I said. Yeah.
- 36:03Speaker 1: I haven't met him. I heard he's a super nice guy.
- 36:06Speaker 2: He is. That was very cool. Yeah.
- 36:09Speaker 1: Oh, that's, that's amazing. Yeah. I got to find that.
- 36:13Speaker 1: All those episodes.
- 36:15Speaker 2: There's some comics that if I met him, I'd probably die.
- 36:18Speaker 2: But like that list is like maybe two or three people,
- 36:22Speaker 2: but like, frankly, like I got to see Amy Mann
- 36:25Speaker 2: this week in new Orleans and like, she's one of
- 36:27Speaker 2: my heroes. And I, I pulled some strings at the
- 36:30Speaker 2: theater that I perform. It's like a big theater. And I,
- 36:32Speaker 2: I don't have much pull. but I called in a
- 36:34Speaker 2: favor and they were like, no one can meet her.
- 36:36Speaker 2: She does not want to do a meet and greet,
- 36:38Speaker 2: but she is doing a sound check that you can
- 36:40Speaker 2: go to. And like, it was just me and nine
- 36:43Speaker 2: other people at the sound check in a theater at
- 36:46Speaker 2: 6 PM on Tuesday. And so she was just like,
- 36:49Speaker 2: here are five songs. I'm not going to play at
- 36:51Speaker 2: the concert tonight. Wow. It was amazing. But I get starstruck. I, my,
- 36:56Speaker 2: my list of like heroes I need to meet and
- 36:58Speaker 2: shit is like mostly musicians and actors, comedians. Well, I'm, I'm,
- 37:02Speaker 2: I'm telling you that story to illustrate that. Like, very
- 37:04Speaker 2: few comedians will have me probably knocked on my ass.
- 37:07Speaker 2: And that includes like John Mulaney and Taylor Tomlinson and
- 37:09Speaker 2: probably Kathy Griffin. And that's it.
- 37:11Speaker 1: Yeah. Those are all superstars.
- 37:15Speaker 2: I can't, I heard somewhere that Kathy Griffin doesn't have openers,
- 37:18Speaker 2: but like, I have this vision of opening for her
- 37:20Speaker 2: on the road and doing real life hacks with Kathy Griffin.
- 37:23Speaker 2: I think it's, I think it's a genius.
- 37:26Speaker 1: I would watch that show. You can inject it into
- 37:28Speaker 1: my veins.
- 37:30Speaker 2: I'm aware. And I'm not shy about this. It's a
- 37:32Speaker 2: fucking genius idea. I have, I've like cold emailed her
- 37:37Speaker 2: and her people about it where I'm like, let me
- 37:39Speaker 2: open for you. Let me just do it once. I will,
- 37:42Speaker 2: I will prove it in one show. I promise. I
- 37:45Speaker 2: don't need more. I don't need more than that commitment.
- 37:46Speaker 2: Just trust me to open for you. I will do
- 37:48Speaker 2: 15 minutes and you will see. You have to believe me. I, wow.
- 37:52Speaker 1: That would be incredible.
- 37:57Speaker 2: It's incredible. I know. I've thought about this a lot.
- 37:59Speaker 1: I would also, I would like to watch, I don't
- 38:02Speaker 1: know how many seasons Hacks has now, three or four,
- 38:04Speaker 1: but I would like to watch the Ryan Rogers reboot
- 38:08Speaker 1: with you and Kathy Griffin. Maybe I could pitch myself
- 38:11Speaker 1: as a writer if you're open to that.
- 38:13Speaker 2: Yes, 100%. I think it works better as a docu-series.
- 38:16Speaker 2: You're hired. I think it works better as a docu-series
- 38:19Speaker 2: because that feels more Kathy Griffin to be like, it's
- 38:22Speaker 2: me and her working, like modernizing her shit or whatever.
- 38:25Speaker 2: I think it's really fun. Not that she needs my help.
- 38:28Speaker 2: She's Kathy Griffin. but I think it works. It's like
- 38:30Speaker 2: a bit, that's like a dynamic.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Yeah. How do you feel? Maybe like a mockumentary.
- 38:34Speaker 2: Style, even better girl. Okay. Now you're not even cash.
- 38:38Speaker 2: You're a producer now.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I feel like, um, maybe like miss piggy could make
- 38:43Speaker 1: an appearance.
- 38:43Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like this is the, look,
- 38:45Speaker 2: you already get the tone. This is what we're doing. Wait,
- 38:49Speaker 2: do you pitch miss piggy for everything?
- 38:51Speaker 1: No, I just would love to watch a comedy show
- 38:54Speaker 1: with you and Miss Piggy.
- 38:56Speaker 2: Me, Miss Piggy, and Kathy Griffin. And then the speakers
- 38:59Speaker 2: blow out of the TV because it's too much screaming.
- 39:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and Big Frida can do the music.
- 39:04Speaker 2: Oh my God. This is so good. Hulu, where are you?
- 39:12Speaker 1: We'll tag Hulu when we post this episode. And Kathy Griffin.
- 39:18Speaker 2: And then we're like, We're going to get greenlit and
- 39:21Speaker 2: then I get a cease and desist in the mail.
- 39:23Speaker 1: Incredible. From Miss Piggy. She's like, get your fucking name
- 39:27Speaker 1: out of here. of here. Oh my gosh. We're having
- 39:36Speaker 1: too much fun. Question number seven. Mariah Carey's You'll Always
- 39:42Speaker 1: Be My Baby is on what album?
- 39:46Speaker 2: Okay. So. Here's me skirting. No, no, no. I'm not
- 39:54Speaker 2: going to get it right, but here's what I'm going
- 39:55Speaker 2: to do. I was going to give you multiple choice.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Go for it. It's not Butterfly, and it's not Rainbow,
- 40:00Speaker 2: and it's not The Emancipation of Mimi. It's much older
- 40:02Speaker 2: than that. So what are my choices now?
- 40:06Speaker 1: Ooh. Please hold.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Is it... Fantasy?
- 40:13Speaker 1: Fantasy, Daydream, or....
- 40:21Speaker 2: Um, is it one of those two?
- 40:23Speaker 1: It is. I was trying to come up with another
- 40:25Speaker 1: one and I couldn't, I was like, or glitter. I
- 40:28Speaker 1: don't know.
- 40:28Speaker 2: It's not glitter. Is it fantasy?
- 40:32Speaker 1: It's, it's not.
- 40:33Speaker 2: It's daydream.
- 40:34Speaker 1: It's daydream.
- 40:35Speaker 2: I am flop Tina Aguilera on the pod.
- 40:38Speaker 1: That's all right. Uh, I don't think Mariah Carey listens
- 40:42Speaker 1: to this podcast. So I think.
- 40:44Speaker 2: Why not? We're, we're new.
- 40:47Speaker 1: That's the only reason why. Otherwise I'm sure she would
- 40:49Speaker 1: listen to us.
- 40:50Speaker 2: Mariah, we are developing a new show you'd be great for. Yeah.
- 40:56Speaker 2: At Mariah Carey. And the podcast gets blocked and reported.
- 41:03Speaker 1: Like immediately debuts and gets canceled.
- 41:07Speaker 2: Incredible. Okay.
- 41:09Speaker 1: Question number eight. What city was the first McDonald's located in?
- 41:20Speaker 2: Where is Ray Kroc from?
- 41:22Speaker 1: I don't even know who that is.
- 41:25Speaker 2: He's the founder of McDonald's. Is it somewhere in like Missouri? No.
- 41:30Speaker 2: What state was it in? I don't even know the state.
- 41:32Speaker 1: California. I was going to say if you would name it. Yeah,
- 41:36Speaker 1: I know.
- 41:37Speaker 2: That doesn't seem very McDonald's-y to be from California.
- 41:44Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't list the state, but unless I
- 41:46Speaker 1: have this city wrong.
- 41:51Speaker 2: What is it?
- 41:52Speaker 1: San Bernardino.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Yikes. Yeah. Which also doesn't have a baseball team.
- 42:02Speaker 1: And that's why you don't live there.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah. Cause I need to be in a city where
- 42:06Speaker 2: they have a great baseball team that wins world series is.
- 42:09Speaker 1: It's very important to you. Very, very important to you.
- 42:14Speaker 2: Okay.
- 42:14Speaker 1: This is, I think you can get this one. Number nine.
- 42:17Speaker 1: How many U S presidents are there?
- 42:19Speaker 2: 47. Well, there's one U.S. president, but there have been 47.
- 42:23Speaker 2: Is that your question?
- 42:26Speaker 1: This is 45, but I feel like I think 45
- 42:32Speaker 1: is right, but I feel like your answer should also
- 42:35Speaker 1: be awarded because we've had 47 residencies. Nick, what do
- 42:44Speaker 1: you think? I think he deserves the point because both counts.
- 42:50Speaker 1: yeah so i.
- 42:52Speaker 2: Think so i concur great the jury has awarded.
- 42:56Speaker 1: You yes okay final question what states do not participate
- 43:04Speaker 1: in daylight savings.
- 43:07Speaker 2: Arizona that's the only one that i'm aware of so
- 43:14Speaker 2: maybe alaska is that the only one just that just
- 43:18Speaker 2: arizona two There's two. Arizona, is it in the lower 48?
- 43:26Speaker 1: I feel like you were close with your first guess.
- 43:32Speaker 2: Alaska is what I thought. The lower. Hawaii.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Nailed it. Is that a two point or one? I'm
- 43:46Speaker 1: just going to give it two points. Hell yeah.
- 43:49Speaker 2: We're real.
- 43:50Speaker 1: We're real generous with the points. I'm like, name some
- 43:53Speaker 1: drag queens, whatever.
- 43:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:56Speaker 1: Okay.
- 43:56Speaker 2: I'll take that.
- 43:58Speaker 1: It's fine.
- 44:00Speaker 2: Just starting. I'm so much better at like pop culture-y stuff.
- 44:04Speaker 2: I know. I love Jeopardy. I love Jeopardy and I
- 44:07Speaker 2: love trivia, but I'm always like, give me anything like
- 44:11Speaker 2: award season movies music like you i'm hard to beat
- 44:15Speaker 2: for stuff like that i.
- 44:16Speaker 1: Feel like some of the other guests have gotten like
- 44:18Speaker 1: a lot of pop culture stuff and this one i
- 44:21Speaker 1: was looking through it i was like this is a
- 44:22Speaker 1: lot of sports.
- 44:23Speaker 2: For him the funny thing is you could have changed
- 44:27Speaker 2: any of that and you chose not to this is
- 44:28Speaker 2: on you.
- 44:29Speaker 1: It's not we can blame carlos for it i because
- 44:36Speaker 1: i think the idea is that we everybody who is
- 44:39Speaker 1: coming to Mic Drop the same week as you for
- 44:42Speaker 1: your show in Chandler on March 5th, they're all going
- 44:45Speaker 1: to get the same questions. So when the podcast comes out,
- 44:50Speaker 1: we'll be like, who is the fairest of them all?
- 44:53Speaker 1: Who's the smartest?
- 44:56Speaker 2: I can't.
- 44:56Speaker 1: You're getting the same questions as the other comics who
- 44:59Speaker 1: are visiting us.
- 45:02Speaker 2: I found this batch of questions to be extremely straight-coated.
- 45:07Speaker 1: They are.
- 45:08Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 45:08Speaker 1: I think they're homophobic. Minus the Mariah Carey question.
- 45:12Speaker 2: You said it.
- 45:13Speaker 1: I did. And I feel comfortable saying it.
- 45:16Speaker 2: If a straight guy gets that question, you can go
- 45:18Speaker 2: ahead and just delete my episode entirely.
- 45:21Speaker 1: I'll just be like, the file was too big. Just
- 45:24Speaker 1: delete the whole thing.
- 45:25Speaker 2: It was too funny.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Well, you survived it, though. You got through it.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 45:31Speaker 1: What a blast. How many drag queens can you name in, like,
- 45:35Speaker 1: 30 seconds? Go.
- 45:37Speaker 2: Probably, probably right now. Okay. Alaska, Katya, Trixie, Detox, Alyssa Edwards,
- 45:44Speaker 2: Lala Ri, um, Megami, Eureka, O'Hara, Bob the Drag Queen,
- 45:50Speaker 2: Monet Exchange, um, let's, Bianca Del Rio, Laganja, Estranja, uh, Georges,
- 46:00Speaker 2: let's do, um, Tina Burner, uh, Jada Essence Hall, Evie Audley, Raja,
- 46:10Speaker 2: Jinx Monsoon, Vendula Krem.
- 46:12Speaker 1: That's 30 seconds. She even put a 30 second timer
- 46:16Speaker 1: on the board. I think I counted 23, but you
- 46:20Speaker 1: honestly could be making them up. You could be just
- 46:22Speaker 1: naming like parts of the body or something.
- 46:24Speaker 2: Oh, that's so funny.
- 46:28Speaker 1: I knew some of them.
- 46:30Speaker 2: I have gone back. What'd you say?
- 46:33Speaker 1: Nick, did you keep count? I think I got like
- 46:35Speaker 1: 23 or 24. I did not do any of that.
- 46:41Speaker 1: I was too busy trying to figure out how to
- 46:42Speaker 1: get a score countdown on there.
- 46:44Speaker 2: You did it.
- 46:44Speaker 1: You crushed it. I love it. I wanted Ryan to
- 46:48Speaker 1: finish strong.
- 46:49Speaker 2: That was fun.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Ryan, I feel like we could just be here chatting
- 46:54Speaker 1: all day, all day long. And I know we have
- 46:56Speaker 1: to go. So now we're in our gotta go section.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Is there anything else you would like to mention before
- 47:03Speaker 1: people come and visit you for your show on Thursday,
- 47:06Speaker 1: March 5th?
- 47:08Speaker 2: I would love if people came to my show at
- 47:11Speaker 2: Mic Drop Chandler on Thursday, March 5th. That would mean
- 47:15Speaker 2: a lot to me. And we need to move these
- 47:17Speaker 2: tickets because it's a 50 cap room. And I don't
- 47:21Speaker 2: think that's hard to fill, but I would love it
- 47:24Speaker 2: if anyone could. in the Chandler surrounding area, including Phoenix.
- 47:28Speaker 2: And I'll just go ahead and say Colorado. California's out there.
- 47:35Speaker 2: Nevada's out there. New Mexico's out there. I wish all
- 47:38Speaker 2: of them would come because they have to. I've got
- 47:42Speaker 2: a really fun year ahead, including I just licensed my
- 47:46Speaker 2: latest special girl by to out TV. Really?
- 47:51Speaker 1: I didn't know that. Congratulations.
- 47:53Speaker 2: It's new. I haven't really talked about it at all,
- 47:55Speaker 2: but we had a couple calls this week about launch
- 47:59Speaker 2: date and everything. I signed it in October, but I
- 48:03Speaker 2: have to keep my mouth shut. But we're going to
- 48:05Speaker 2: have to start rolling out promo because it's going to
- 48:07Speaker 2: launch the first or second week of May. So it's
- 48:10Speaker 2: going to be on OutTV for international distribution and syndication
- 48:14Speaker 2: in Canada, the UK.
- 48:16Speaker 1: That is so cool.
- 48:18Speaker 2: It's really cool.
- 48:19Speaker 1: I know.
- 48:20Speaker 2: I love you. Very, very proud.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I'm so excited that you're coming to see us. I'm
- 48:25Speaker 1: actually going to be featuring for you.
- 48:27Speaker 2: You are! I'm so excited about that.
- 48:29Speaker 1: And our pal Lou Moon will be hosting. It's going
- 48:32Speaker 1: to be a murderous show. Truly, like, I can't wait.
- 48:37Speaker 1: And I'm so excited for people who haven't seen you
- 48:39Speaker 1: in Phoenix and Chandler area to get to experience how
- 48:43Speaker 1: freaking hilarious you are.
- 48:45Speaker 2: You're so kind. And Nick, please come to the show
- 48:47Speaker 2: if you can and And also tell everyone you've ever
- 48:50Speaker 2: met that I'm so, I'm an avalanche of charisma. It's true.
- 48:53Speaker 2: And they need to come to this show because it
- 48:55Speaker 2: really is going to be fun. It's my only night
- 48:57Speaker 2: in Chandler. So I like, I kind of want to
- 48:58Speaker 2: make it count. So that would be awesome.
- 49:01Speaker 1: I will tell every single person that I know.
- 49:04Speaker 2: Please. I'll even try to drive out there.
- 49:05Speaker 1: I'm actually in Vegas. So I didn't know if you
- 49:09Speaker 1: knew I was in Vegas. So I'll try my best.
- 49:11Speaker 2: How far is Vegas from, from like the next Chandler area?
- 49:15Speaker 1: Honestly, like four to five hours.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Yeah. Oh, that's nothing. I had to drive back and
- 49:20Speaker 2: forth to Jacksonville, Florida from two new Orleans this weekend.
- 49:25Speaker 2: And it was like nine plus stops and everything. I
- 49:28Speaker 2: didn't mind. I listened to like an entire audio book
- 49:31Speaker 2: and a half and I loved it. I had so
