- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today I want to talk to you a little bit about why we care so
- 0:34much about what other people think about us.
- 0:37This is been coming up a lot and not in my personal life, but
- 0:42with my clients, and I thought it would be worth it to address
- 0:45it with all of you since it seems to be something that's out
- 0:49there floating in the world right now, worrying about what
- 0:52other people are going to think. And I, I know this is something
- 0:56that's we, we are hard wired since you if.
- 0:58You went to middle school? You actually understand this on
- 1:02such a deep level because anybody who's gone to middle
- 1:05school, which is. All of us.
- 1:07Hopefully gets the fact that you worry about what other people
- 1:12think. You don't want to be that kid
- 1:13that has that any way to stand out that isn't in a great way.
- 1:18And even the ones who are, you know, the ones, the popular
- 1:21kids, they still worried about it.
- 1:23They just didn't do it in the same way.
- 1:24It's it. Middle school is.
- 1:26Probably the the breeding ground of all trauma as.
- 1:31Far as I'm concerned for so many people, because they'll all come
- 1:34back and they'll say, well, when I was in middle school and I was
- 1:37like, note to myself, gosh, middle school and my middle
- 1:40school experience was no better. Believe me, I did not enjoy
- 1:44middle school at all. There was a chunk of time that I
- 1:47could. Technically, say let's.
- 1:49Do redo that. It would be middle school for
- 1:51sure. But in any event, we digress.
- 1:54I. Don't want to go down there?
- 1:54Let's go back to the. Fact of You have to let yourself
- 1:59understand that there's a part of you that you, it's hard wired
- 2:05into us to have social behaviors and social cues from other
- 2:09people because they're important, right?
- 2:11You do want other people to as a society, as a, as a thriving
- 2:16species, we look to others to shape us.
- 2:20And part of that can be healthy. Part of it is healthy, but not
- 2:24at the detriment of yourself. Again, this comes back to always
- 2:27being self aware and really looking at how you're processing
- 2:31stuff. There's a really awesome quote
- 2:34from Lao Tzu who says care what other people think and you will
- 2:38always be their prisoner. And boy, isn't that the truth.
- 2:41I mean, go back even to middle school.
- 2:44I mean, I can tell you how many times I heard my father say why
- 2:46do you care what they think? But you know, it's really easy
- 2:49for someone who's in their 40s to be telling somebody who's
- 2:5210:11 and 12:00 not to care what other people think and not
- 2:57knowing where that person is in their little mind and their
- 3:00little development. So we all have these issues with
- 3:06this showing up at some point in our life.
- 3:09We become prisoners of other people by giving them the power
- 3:12and allowing what they think to become our reality.
- 3:16So I'll give you a great example.
- 3:17When I was going to shoot, when I was going to begin the process
- 3:20of, you know, recording out in the chicken coop and possibly
- 3:24shooting videos and things out here, I had this whole thing in
- 3:28my head about, well, I wonder what people are going to think
- 3:31as a professional who's recording from her chicken coop.
- 3:35And it I had to go through this process.
- 3:37Now, did it take me a long time? No, it didn't take me a long
- 3:40time because I recognize the information it was trying to
- 3:42give me. And then I use that information
- 3:45and I came to the conclusion, which is why you're listening to
- 3:47me out in my chicken coop because this is one of my most
- 3:51happy places. I love hanging out with my
- 3:53chickens and granted, right now some of them are here, but a lot
- 3:57of them are far away, out free ranging, having fun, doing
- 4:00whatever they're doing, looking for bugs.
- 4:03But it's nonetheless, I'm still happy to be here with the ones
- 4:06that I have. And this is one of my I have to
- 4:11look at myself. How do I want to say this?
- 4:13I want to look at myself and say just because this is not the
- 4:16same as what other people like, it doesn't mean that I can't
- 4:20bring it forward and share it with people and let people know
- 4:25that I like it. It's that originality of saying,
- 4:28you know what, people are entitled to their opinions and
- 4:32they can keep their opinions. They can share their opinions,
- 4:35but I don't have to keep their opinion.
- 4:37I can decide. Just like I don't have to keep
- 4:40the garbage in the house every night.
- 4:42If I want to take it out, I can take it out.
- 4:44I don't have to hang on to things.
- 4:46I don't have to make everything a collection and curate it and
- 4:49leased off somebody else's opinions about things.
- 4:52And I think we're we have become so sensitive to what other
- 4:57people think right now in society.
- 4:59We don't want to accept ourselves for who we are and
- 5:03where we are because we're worried about what other people
- 5:06are going to think. So a lot of us have retreated
- 5:10and just said, well, I'm going to, I'm going to just go down
- 5:13this other road and isolate myself or I'm going to not truly
- 5:17share who I am. And that's fine if you're doing
- 5:21it for the right reason, But if you're doing it to hide, it's
- 5:24never the right reason. And it's important to say no.
- 5:27I'm going to stand in the truth of who I am.
- 5:29I'm going to accept myself for who I am.
- 5:32I'm going to love myself for who I am.
- 5:35And I'm going to give myself the grace and the space to cultivate
- 5:41that person into the greatest version of myself that I can be
- 5:45and not according to what other people think, according to you.
- 5:49You've got to liberate yourself from the thoughts that it
- 5:53matters what anyone else thinks. And maybe you have, you know,
- 5:57that close person in your life, like I have a few close people
- 6:01in my life and I will go to them for their opinions on things.
- 6:06Doesn't mean I'll take them, but I trust them and I'll go to
- 6:10them. And I'll say, OK, what are your
- 6:12thoughts on this? And you know, my husband being
- 6:15one of them. And sometimes he'll say to me,
- 6:17you know, I don't, I don't know how that would go or I'm not
- 6:19sure about that. Or he'll give me his opinion.
- 6:21Doesn't mean I have to take it. Just means that I've checked in,
- 6:25I've gotten some information again, but I don't have to hold
- 6:29on to it. I don't have to keep it.
- 6:31So the lesson today all about accepting yourself for who you
- 6:36are, where you are and giving yourself the freedom, the the,
- 6:41the just the Peace of Mind that I don't care what other people
- 6:45think and I am no longer going to be a prisoner of anyone is
- 6:49just absolutely freeing. So hopefully today this is going
- 6:53to be helpful to you and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:56Have a great day guys. Bye.
