Fast Hires, Training, and Pay Boosts in Oklahoma City · The 405 Payroll

• 0:13
If you have sent fifty resumes into the online void this month and heard absolute
• 0:19
silence, you, uh, you are definitely not alone.
• 0:24
But right now in Oklahoma City, the fastest route to a paycheck next week isn't
• 0:29
through a job portal at all.
• 0:32
The Oklahoma Employment Security Commission is running weekly hiring events directly
• 0:37
out of the Metro Tech Conference Center at 1900 Springlake Dr.,
• 0:42
  Oklahoma City, OK 73111.
• 0:46
  Springlake Drive, yeah.
• 0:48
I, I actually remember back in my early radio station days,
• 0:52
we did a remote broadcast at a walk in hiring event.
• 0:55
I was, uh, broke, working part time, and I literally filled out a paper application
• 1:01
on a folding table, did a five minute interview right there,
• 1:04
and had a start date by Friday.
• 1:07
Online application portals feel like a black hole, but walking in person changes the
• 1:12
  whole equation.
• 1:14
  It really does.
• 1:16
You get to check out an upcoming hiring event or career fair near you to learn about
• 1:20
career opportunties, and you actually talk to a human being who can hire you on the
• 1:26
  spot.
• 1:27
Right now, for instance, the Walmart Fulfillment Center over on Southwest 44th
• 1:32
Street is recruiting warehouse associates starting at seventeen dollars and fifty
• 1:36
cents to nineteen dollars an hour.
• 1:39
Plus, they offer a dollar fifty night shift differential.
• 1:43
Wait, so nineteen dollars plus a dollar fifty puts overnight shifts at twenty
• 1:48
dollars and fifty cents an hour?
• 1:51
That, that adds up fast if you are trying to cover rent.
• 1:55
  Exactly.
• 1:56
And if you need something entry level with zero experience required,
• 2:00
ResourceMFG is placing light industrial workers right now starting at sixteen
• 2:06
dollars and fifty cents per hour.
• 2:08
But here is the breakdown working families in the metro need to think about.
• 2:13
A standard forty hour day shift at sixteen fifty brings in six hundred and sixty
• 2:18
  dollars gross.
• 2:20
But if you take a four day, ten hour night or weekend schedule with that shift
• 2:24
differential, your weekly gross jumps to seven hundred and sixty dollars.
• 2:30
That is a hundred dollar difference every single week.
• 2:34
And three full days off in a row, which can cut down on commute fuel across the 405
• 2:40
or help balance childcare costs between partners.
• 2:44
  Right.
• 2:44
But starting at sixteen or seventeen dollars an hour is just step one.
• 2:49
How do you move from that base into twenty four to twenty eight dollars an hour long
• 2:54
  term?
• 2:55
The secret in central Oklahoma is Francis Tuttle Technology Center.
• 2:59
Their adult career training is structured so that tuition is 3.00 dollars per clock
• 3:04
hour, times the number of hours in the career major.
• 3:07
Wait, three dollars a clock hour?
• 3:10
So for, say, a six hundred hour HVAC certification or commercial driver license
• 3:15
program, the total tuition is only eighteen hundred dollars?
• 3:20
  Exactly eighteen hundred dollars total.
• 3:23
And Oklahoma CareerTech has financial aid options that can cover even that,
• 3:28
meaning you can double your hourly earning potential without taking on thousands in
• 3:33
  student debt.
• 3:34
Now, while you are waiting for a program to start or waiting for your first paycheck
• 3:38
from a new job, there are immediate weekend side options right here in town.
• 3:44
  Like what?
• 3:45
What is pulling good hourly rates on the weekend?
• 3:48
Trade show logistics and event setup at the OKC Convention Center pays around
• 3:53
eighteen dollars an hour, which comes out to one hundred and forty four dollars
• 3:57
gross for an eight hour shift.
• 3:59
Or if you have a reliable vehicle, peak dining hour courier deliveries across the
• 4:04
metro are averaging around twenty two dollars an hour on Friday and Saturday
• 4:08
  evenings.
• 4:09
Okay, so if you combine a steady warehouse schedule with a weekend gig,
• 4:15
you are suddenly bringing in real money.
• 4:18
But if you are already behind on electric or gas bills, throwing new money at old
• 4:23
debt without a plan can feel like treadmilling.
• 4:27
That is where local structural anchors come in.
• 4:30
The Community Action Agency of Oklahoma and Canadian Counties,
• 4:35
located at 319 Southwest 9th Street, provides direct utility assistance and
• 4:41
  emergency support.
• 4:42
Clearing past due balances through community programs gives your household room to
• 4:47
breathe so every new dollar you earn goes straight into your family savings rather
• 4:52
  than playing catch up.
