- 0:13Is that a song that insurance Sunday. It's just after a breakthrough year in
- 0:20twenty twenty three, Sydney CA millions of rock red Hook understanding. We had
- 0:23a quiet start this year, but that all changed earlier this month with the
- 0:27release a new single, Screen Too and a couple of show announcements, the
- 0:31first of which will be Women in Rock at Nordon's Music Factory in Tolounder this
- 0:34weekend. Thanks for our sponsors. Rady Heavy corded the band last night of
- 0:38practice to find out just what they've been up to. Gooday, it's Alex,
- 0:42Hey, it's Ned Hey, I'm Emmy and we're from Red Hook.
- 0:46We're so excited to be heading back to the Sonshrine Coach this Saturday, coming
- 0:50to Caloundra for the very first time to play a gurogy little festival called Women
- 0:54in Rock at the Norton Music Factory. Dope Dazz, thanks very much for
- 0:59Johnny, guys. Will let me say that's probably the most professional intro I've
- 1:03ever had. Well done. Oh we didn't We didn't square enough. We
- 1:07should have more read returned to Queensland this weekend. The headline of Women in
- 1:14Rock at Norton Music Factor in Caloundra. See you pretty much already answered my
- 1:18question. But you haven't played there before, not in Toloundra, not.
- 1:22I don't think I've even been to Calandra, so I'm pretty excited to check
- 1:25it out. Just beautiful marouchar door mate. I think that's the extent of
- 1:27our Sunshine Coast adventures when I was a kid. You's are going to love
- 1:36this place. I took Franklin Bok there and they reckon it's the best back
- 1:38line they've ever They even they even had the picks for the band as back
- 1:42line, like they do everything. As the name suggests. The Night showcases
- 1:49some of Australia's women in rock, including Crave, Joey, Verity, Vipers,
- 1:53Syndicate, Acid Cherry and Miss Elc. So have you played in any
- 1:57of those guys before? Yeah, we actually have, not like as a
- 2:01full band, but Siena from Crave jumped out with us on our headline tool
- 2:06last year to do guess He's on imposta, So really really excited to see
- 2:09her band Crave play live. I've also seen Joe Lee play just like at
- 2:15a random gig when I was just up in up on the Gold Coach and
- 2:19she's fucking rad. So excited to see her again. And yeah, I
- 2:22just really stoked to see all the all the talents, the awesome fem talent
- 2:27that Sunshine Coast has to offer. Well, I'll let you in a little
- 2:30secret here. The girls have actually seen Crave before at a Christmas show and
- 2:34they loved them. So you guys are going to have to be on a
- 2:36game to impress some more than Crave. Oh yeah, all right, the
- 2:39gauntlet has been thrown. Well, I trust, I trust your girl's judgment.
- 2:44They're usually pretty pretty good critics, so let's go. All right,
- 2:51So what's the actual story behind the show? And then the name Women in
- 2:53Rock Low? Was it an initiative led by the venue or did the band
- 2:58s put it together? Yeah? So I think we just got shit up
- 3:01by the venue to be a part of it. And you know, supporting
- 3:07fem talent, especially in the heavy space has always been really important to me.
- 3:09And I'm the band of course, and the dudes, I think what
- 3:14was it David from Hostile Entertainment he's helping put this together as well. Yeah,
- 3:17he's an absolute legend. Yeah, lovely guy. So we're yes that
- 3:22they've invited us along and looks like it's going to be a really really cool
- 3:25show. Yeah, like playing and also yeah, just playing like regional shows
- 3:30and like kind of grassroots at you know, grassroots venues and supporting Like yeah,
- 3:36that sort of level of the industry is always really important to us and
- 3:39will always be important to us. So yeah, we're just excited. We're
- 3:43just excited to meet some new people and you know, play a new venue
- 3:46and have a good time. Now I asked this question with the utmost respect.
- 3:53But you get to celebrate and have fun, aye, because it's women
- 3:54in rock. But what happens with Alex and Nedlock? Do they just kind
- 3:58to stand there and have bananas for an animal or something like what's coming?
- 4:02Usually what is it? We get the you know what, the what is
- 4:05it? The circus where they have you sit on just above like a pool
- 4:10of water, and the pretty fun I usually just throw bananas at him anyway
- 4:19on Saturday night, bas No, I think that honestly though, like the
- 4:26gender thing, I think it's important that we kind of just normalize the diversity.
- 4:30Like I love the way that this event is like shining the spotlight on
- 4:33like fem artists, but at the same time, like it's also just important
- 4:39to normalize like you know, all of us rock it out together, you
- 4:43know what I mean, Like does that make sense? But this is probably
- 4:48one of the only serious questions you'll ever get from me. But this is
- 4:53something that's close to your heart and me, like the whole women in rock
- 4:56thing, Like you've done a lot of advocating and raising public awareness, but
- 5:00have you noticed a shift in mentality and behavior from what you're doing, Like
- 5:02is it actually making a difference? I think so. I definitely think so.
- 5:08Like not I'm not trying to say anything that I've done is has made
- 5:11a different Like have you been a big contribution? I just think yeah,
- 5:15I think it's important, and I think like it's all about like representation and
- 5:19visibility. And I've definitely just been in the industry, you know, over
- 5:23the past, like even just five years, I think there's been a big
- 5:27shift, like you just see it with like there's just been this explosion of
- 5:32talent for you know, like fem artists in the in the you know,
- 5:35punk rock and heavy space. Like I've never been more inspired by other women
- 5:40around me. Like I think I might have said this to you before and
- 5:42like one of the last times we chatted. But growing up, like I
- 5:46all of my influences were dudes, because there wasn't really anybody who, like
- 5:50any artists who kind of spoke to me that were women. I didn't see
- 5:54myself in anyone. But like more than ever now, I think, like
- 5:57I think the next I think it's kind of a positive blow and effect for
- 6:00the next generation. Like I think we've still you know, we still have
- 6:01a long way to go, but I'm definitely noticing positive changes. And I
- 6:04think like even just stuff like not all the time, but a lot of
- 6:10time, like festival promoters and stuff, they take this stuff into account when
- 6:13they're when they're booking lineups and they do try to sort of champion more local
- 6:17talent. And that's how it's going to change, is like events like this
- 6:21championing talent from the grassroots, so that that has like a you know,
- 6:26trickle lot effect up the ladder till we get to that headlighter level. That's
- 6:30the dream. That's the dream. It's actually an interesting point too, like
- 6:34you mentioned having equality across the board, Like from from a writer's point of
- 6:39view, it's difficult sometimes because this event's called Women in Rock, and it's
- 6:43celebrating women in rock, which is great. But then if I call someone
- 6:46a female fronted band, all of a sudden, I'm doing the wrong thing
- 6:49when we really just trying to make a point that it's it's a different sort
- 6:53of a band, like it's it's about finding that balance in and between respect
- 6:56and not easy. It's one of those it's one of those weird things.
- 7:01Hey, I think I think different people have It's like with anything in twenty
- 7:05twenty four. Different people have just different sensibilities and are going to be uncomfortable
- 7:10with different language. I've got no problem being referred to as a female fronted
- 7:13band because I think as a journalist, like something you know, people don't
- 7:16a lot of people probably don't realize this, but like when you're when you're
- 7:19writing about a band, like, regardless of who they are, you want
- 7:24to sort of identify, you know, we'll call you know, like what
- 7:27genre are they like? It's like things that sort of make them unique and
- 7:30special. And you know, I guess being female fronted is still somewhat unique
- 7:34and special, particularly in our scene. So I guess I know, I
- 7:39know it kind of I do understand like both sides of the coin. It's
- 7:44a bit of a mindfield. I find that with my lyric writing to you
- 7:46know, using certain words and certain things. You're like, oh, it's
- 7:49just going to upset anyone, or yeah, I get in trouble just for
- 7:54saying good morning. So I'm in this Yeah, well it's probably because you
- 8:00don't have pants on. How do you know? I thought you could only
- 8:03see me from the top up. We're all canceled, so turn anything else
- 8:11you're up this way? Or is it just frying fly out for the one
- 8:13show? Ooh, we actually are. We're filming a cups of music videos
- 8:18while we're up there, which really excited about. Yeah, yeah, yes,
- 8:22can you tell me more? Yeah? Well, yeah, we got
- 8:26a whole lot of a whole lot of new music cooking which we're really excited
- 8:31about. And yeah, so we're saying we're gonna be saying for a few
- 8:35days and shooting some stuff around like the Gold Coast in Brisbane with our boy
- 8:41Colin Jeff from Tennis Thas Media who Yeah we've worked with a low bloody love
- 8:46that guy. And yeah we're really excited. All right, I won't push
- 8:50anymore, but thank you guys, at least your new single Screen Too,
- 8:56a couple of weeks ago. Mates, that's a reception been for that pretty
- 9:00sick. Yeah, Yeah, a lot of people come out of the woodworks
- 9:03that are like just in love with it. It's got, yeah, so
- 9:07many cool elements that are drawing different people in from different areas. So it's
- 9:11been cool. Yeah, I think people like the fans seem to really like
- 9:16it when we do like heavier shit, so we got to keep them happy.
- 9:22Like the last song we released was Tourists, which was kind of more
- 9:24of a straight rock vibe, so we've got to keep reminding people that we
- 9:26can do heavy shit as well. Yeah, missing someone here? Like,
- 9:31was there a scream one and I didn't notice? I know that's confusing,
- 9:37So we Screamed Too is a sequel to our song Cure for Psycho that I
- 9:41think came out in like twenty twenty, and I wanted to call it Cure
- 9:46for Psycho Too, but I got people didn't The team didn't like that,
- 9:50so we just called it Screen Too. But I mean there's like lots of
- 9:56there's lots of I guess like I'm a big geek and like Cure for Psycho
- 10:01had a lot of like scream references like Sidney Prescott bitch, I mean this
- 10:05for the sequel, and so I was like, well, I'm going to
- 10:07do I'm going to do a sequel fair enough, could just touch on this
- 10:13before. But it is also one of the heaviest songs that you've released.
- 10:16So I've noticed that steadily music is getting progressively heavier. Like is it poincidental
- 10:22or are you're deliberately going down that path? Oh that's a good question.
- 10:28I mean, I think we just keep trying to. Like I think that
- 10:33one of the aims that we have in our band is like when we write
- 10:35shit, like we we just kind of try and top ourselves in every direction.
- 10:39So we're like, how can we Like, yeah, this song was
- 10:41sick, Like what can we do that's like even cooler or even sicker?
- 10:46And for me as well, like I'm learning to like I'm getting better at
- 10:48screaming, Like I'm not great at it, but I'm definitely getting better.
- 10:52I think like when Red Hook first started, every time I tried to scream,
- 10:54I sounded like a chipmunk getting tinged. I was like, so,
- 11:00and bring you an album shirt in on Saturday I'm going to bring you an
- 11:03album shirt on Saturday. Yeah, So I think it's also that it's kind
- 11:11of like I'm keen. Yeah, I'm really keen to like do more of
- 11:16that style of vocal and get better at that. So yeah, we're it's
- 11:20fun. It's fun to just challenge ourselves as how far we can bloody push
- 11:24it. Yeah. I was going to ask you if it's a standlone single
- 11:28or part of a new album cycle. But from the way you answered that
- 11:31last one about the video, is he going to tell me to get fucked?
- 11:33So we'll concentrate on the last album. I haven't spoken to you guys.
- 11:41I can, but I'm not going to ask you about it. But
- 11:43I haven't actually spoken video since Postcards from a Living Hell came out. So
- 11:48how was the response? Was it everything you expected? Oh? It was
- 11:52so so much more than we could have ever expected. Like, I think
- 11:56we all kind of felt like we were punching above our wait a little bit
- 12:00early with that album came out, because you know, it's the first album
- 12:03we're a completely independent band, so to like, you know, get just
- 12:07even stuff like you know, like getting Triple J feature album, like charting
- 12:11on Aria like this was all stuff that was like beyond our wildest dreams,
- 12:15and you know, obviously even more. I think the biggest the thing that
- 12:18I was stoked on the most about the album though, is always just you
- 12:22know, the biggest the most important thing is that the fans like it.
- 12:26And I don't think there's a single song on the album that like wasn't someone's
- 12:30favorite, which I love. There's like a little something that's special to everyone.
- 12:37So I feel like that's the most satisfying thing as an artist. I
- 12:41think I read through quite a few of the reviews, like you had reviews
- 12:45from metal Hammer and Loudwise, some of the biggest publications in the world were
- 12:48jumping on Graham Hold and not one person that I read anyway you had anything
- 12:50negative to say. It's there's got to be a good feeling. Yeah,
- 12:54it does feel good. Yeah, we're not shit, not title shit.
- 13:00Everyone who bullied me in high school stuck on that. Yeah, Okay,
- 13:09that's good. It's good. It's a good feeling. It was very our
- 13:13hearts were very, very full. Now we just have to try and do
- 13:16it again. I'm not asking you anything about that. Don't try and make
- 13:20me. You know, we don't have like a new album coming or anything
- 13:26like, why would you like, why would you assume that, you know,
- 13:31just just just like quit it, just forget about it myself out.
- 13:39So your next show after this weekend is Great Southern Nights in Wollongong with north
- 13:43Lane, Key Flip and I can't even read my writing, uh huh all
- 13:50fark music and more sounds like a lot of fun. Yes, yeah,
- 13:56well it's I guess it's more of a not per se like collective. It's
- 14:01not like we're all playing with those artists but the headliner, which yeah,
- 14:07yeah, I would love to play with Northlane one day. It's basically like
- 14:11it's this new South Wales government initiative which is really really cool. We basically
- 14:16like just injecting a bit more money into the into the live live music economy
- 14:22and like local venues here, so they've just yeah, it's just like this
- 14:28just I don't know how long it runs for. It's the entire month of
- 14:31March, but it's just like all these different shows in like venues across Sydney
- 14:35and Wollongong and it's around somewhere. Yeah, it's really it's really cool.
- 14:43We spoked to Yeah, we really stoked to be involved and we've got we're
- 14:46just doing a headliner in Woollongong with some some close mates days like these who
- 14:52are originally from Brisy Busy Boys. Yeah, they Exodus, they betrayed you.
- 14:58They're living in the Gong now in the goal. Yeah. And our
- 15:01good friend like some good mates vows called the Art who were really interesting.
- 15:05They're a really interesting band, Like they were huge, like I think around
- 15:09the early two thousands and they've pulled with like you know, the you are
- 15:13like manson Lincoln Park, like Steel Panther like and yeah, they're really really
- 15:20awesome and they're about to sort of make a little bit of a comeback.
- 15:24So really excited to have them on board. Nice And if I know you
- 15:28guys, you've got more short shows planned for the future too or booked.
- 15:31Can you talk about them or we cut cutting that one? Gee we can.
- 15:37We can tell you that you are definitely right and we will be announcing
- 15:43some things, some stuff and some things for a little bit later in the
- 15:48year. Thanks very much, guys, We'll see you in a couple of
- 15:50days. It's it's not a song, is that in shirts? Fuzzy in
- 16:07case the cycles there's some short points comes back to finish me. I know
- 16:11you're sad that I'm so breathing and bloody vengeance at the minute that I stopped
- 16:15beating the end. I'm packing like the pye old path. I try him
