- 0:10Speaker 1: Welcome to Get to the Point. I'm your host, Terrell Lawrence,
- 0:13Speaker 1: and my other host, Chris Spencer, here.
- 0:15Speaker 2: That's pretty good.
- 0:17Speaker 3: I don't know why you're yelling. Is it because of him?
- 0:21Speaker 2: I told you I'm nervous.
- 0:22Speaker 3: Okay, I'm sorry.
- 0:23Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, there's a reason to be nervous.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Ladies and gentlemen, our guest is Jaleel White. What up, Jay?
- 0:28Speaker 2: What's up, man?
- 0:29Speaker 3: Jay Dub.
- 0:30Speaker 2: How y'all doing?
- 0:32Speaker 3: This is too funny.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I think people really enjoy when we talk smack to
- 0:36Speaker 2: each other. Yeah, man. This guy here, man. When was
- 0:40Speaker 2: the first time y'all met? I'm trying to think. Remind me.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Refresh my memory. Was it with the Eagles?
- 0:46Speaker 3: Oh, 100%.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Okay, okay. I'm with the Eagles. It's good times.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah, and I did know he came out for a game,
- 0:54Speaker 1: and I didn't know what the connection was.
- 0:56Speaker 2: And I was another fellow UCLA alum.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Freddie Mitchell. you guys are good friends. And I met,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I think we met at a party. I think it
- 1:06Speaker 1: may have been at Javon Curse's house. One of the
- 1:09Speaker 1: many parties that we had. Was it after the Hugh
- 1:12Speaker 1: Douglas fight? No, it was well before that. This was
- 1:14Speaker 1: before any of that.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Hey man, I.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Know, I know all the stories.
- 1:17Speaker 3: Oh, you do?
- 1:18Speaker 4: Freddie would text me every day.
- 1:21Speaker 3: T.O.
- 1:21Speaker 4: Did this today.
- 1:21Speaker 3: T.O.
- 1:22Speaker 4: Did that today.
- 1:23Speaker 1: Freddie was social media before social media.
- 1:27Speaker 4: That's such a great quote.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Freddie was social media before social media.
- 1:32Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:33Speaker 2: I'm just telling you. Um, but yeah, that's, that's what
- 1:35Speaker 2: I recall. I think it was at night. It was
- 1:36Speaker 2: a good night.
- 1:37Speaker 1: We're all having fun hanging out. And then I think
- 1:40Speaker 1: we ended up on the ping pong table. Um, I'll
- 1:44Speaker 1: let you tell the ping pong story.
- 1:45Speaker 4: Nah, you can jump into it. I've been waiting to
- 1:48Speaker 4: hear your version of the story for years.
- 1:49Speaker 1: No, I just heard you wanted to rematch it. So
- 1:51Speaker 1: if you wanted to rematch. Oh, we can definitely do that.
- 1:53Speaker 3: So you beat him.
- 1:54Speaker 2: If he wants to rematch.
- 1:55Speaker 4: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:57Speaker 2: If he wants to rematch, what happens?
- 1:59Speaker 4: Why would I want to rematch?
- 2:02Speaker 2: What you mean?
- 2:03Speaker 3: He's saying, you're calling for a rematch. We were going
- 2:07Speaker 3: to set up a ping pong table in here.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Clearly there's not enough room.
- 2:11Speaker 3: But they said it's because you wanted a rematch with him. Yeah,
- 2:15Speaker 3: that's true.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So you're asking for a rematch.
- 2:17Speaker 4: No, see, I was offering him a rematch.
- 2:20Speaker 3: Oh, we didn't say that.
- 2:21Speaker 2: That's what it was.
- 2:22Speaker 4: I was offering him a rematch.
- 2:24Speaker 2: Oh, wow, there's a lot of ambiguity in this story.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Got you.
- 2:26Speaker 4: Well, let's go ahead and straighten it out, man.
- 2:28Speaker 2: TBD.
- 2:32Speaker 3: Why TBD?
- 2:32Speaker 4: I want to know what do you think happened that evening?
- 2:36Speaker 3: I'm nice. What happened that night y'all played?
- 2:38Speaker 4: He's a very nice player.
- 2:39Speaker 2: That was 20 years ago.
- 2:40Speaker 4: CTE. CTE.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Okay, so I think we understand exactly what happened.
- 2:48Speaker 2: CTE.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Drewski has entered the room.
- 2:52Speaker 2: So you need a rematch. I don't recall. I can't recall.
- 2:57Speaker 2: What happened, man? What happened, Jaleel?
- 3:00Speaker 4: First of all, I'm more annoyed than he is that
- 3:03Speaker 4: that team did not win a Super Bowl. That team
- 3:06Speaker 4: was beautiful. I saw that team up close and personal.
- 3:09Speaker 4: I'm talking about the Philadelphia Eagles. And I'm dropping all names.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Freddie and Don and him and Tim Douglas and whomever, whatever.
- 3:17Speaker 4: When they got on the field, they were really a
- 3:20Speaker 4: special team. And off the field, they were equally special.
- 3:25Speaker 4: I would fly in just to party with these fools.
- 3:28Speaker 4: I mean, they threw amazing parties at their homes.
- 3:31Speaker 1: And you know what?
- 3:31Speaker 4: It wasn't even the kind of parties where it was like,
- 3:33Speaker 4: You know, we got the jokes now. Oh, it's a
- 3:35Speaker 4: ditty party. It's in the nose. None of that. These
- 3:38Speaker 4: were legit parties.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Like brotherhood parties.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I had parties at my house on Monday nights. I
- 3:44Speaker 1: had Monday night parties. I had the lounge downstairs.
- 3:48Speaker 4: And this was a Monday night party at his house.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Yeah, I had the neon light. I had a neon
- 3:52Speaker 1: light thing made called the T.O.
- 3:54Speaker 2: 's Lounge. You go to come in the house, go downstairs.
- 3:57Speaker 2: plush chairs, the music, man, it was lovely.
- 4:00Speaker 4: Both sides of the ball, offense and defense, everybody there.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Really?
- 4:04Speaker 4: Everybody there.
- 4:05Speaker 2: So the partying wasn't a detriment to them?
- 4:07Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 4:08Speaker 1: It's not a party what everybody probably would assume or expect.
- 4:11Speaker 5: Right.
- 4:12Speaker 2: You know, when you say party.
- 4:13Speaker 3: It was a get-together.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Right. How many people we talked to?
- 4:16Speaker 1: Bro, it was a lot of teammates, bro, like black
- 4:19Speaker 1: and white. It wasn't just all brothers.
- 4:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:23Speaker 4: It was a pour-your-own-drink party, you know? Yeah.
- 4:25Speaker 1: I bought one of the biggest houses in Morristown, New
- 4:28Speaker 1: Jersey when I was there.
- 4:30Speaker 4: And it was beautiful.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:32Speaker 4: It was a good time. It was like everybody was
- 4:35Speaker 4: in on it. The baddest chicks. The baddest chicks. But
- 4:39Speaker 4: it was cool because it was like, you remember the
- 4:42Speaker 4: Little Penny Super Bowl commercial?
- 4:43Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 4:43Speaker 4: Where it was just like they just panned into everybody.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:45Speaker 2: That's what it felt like.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Wow.
- 4:46Speaker 4: It's like if you were somebody in Philadelphia at the
- 4:48Speaker 4: time and it was a Monday night and they'd already
- 4:50Speaker 4: whooped somebody on a Sunday, hey, this is what it was.
- 4:53Speaker 4: And it was great. So he had a ping pong
- 4:54Speaker 4: table out back. So I was like, oh, man, who plays?
- 4:57Speaker 2: Cool.
- 4:57Speaker 4: So we jump out there. We start doing a little something, something.
- 5:00Speaker 4: He nice with it. You know, T.O. 's an athlete.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Anytime I'm dealing with an athlete of his caliber, he's
- 5:04Speaker 4: going to be nice with it.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Sure.
- 5:05Speaker 4: However, I am trained in the art.
- 5:07Speaker 3: I stay Gucci down to the socks.
- 5:09Speaker 4: I am trained in the art of the paddle.
- 5:10Speaker 3: However.
- 5:11Speaker 2: However.
- 5:13Speaker 6: I stay Gucci down to the socks.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Right?
- 5:19Speaker 4: I'm trained in the art of the paddle.
- 5:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 5:20Speaker 4: So I start doing my thing. Get the first win.
- 5:24Speaker 2: T.O.
- 5:24Speaker 4: 's like, nah, run it back. Now I'm looking at
- 5:26Speaker 4: all this lovingness. We got all these flamingos and football
- 5:28Speaker 4: players walking around here. I'm like, hey, can we get
- 5:30Speaker 4: back to the game?
- 5:31Speaker 3: No, no.
- 5:31Speaker 4: He was like, run it back. So now you want
- 5:32Speaker 4: to hit me with the athlete thing where it's a
- 5:35Speaker 4: challenge to no end. So I keep winning, but he keep... Okay,
- 5:38Speaker 4: run it back.
- 5:39Speaker 3: You didn't win no games?
- 5:40Speaker 4: Just run it back.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Let him tell the story.
- 5:42Speaker 4: I'm going to run it back. I want you to
- 5:43Speaker 4: finish it now.
- 5:44Speaker 2: No, I mean, he's good, man. He sounds like he's finished.
- 5:48Speaker 2: He's nice. He's nice.
- 5:51Speaker 4: The thing for me that just cracked me up was...
- 5:54Speaker 4: It was like I ignited that athlete side, that professional
- 5:57Speaker 4: athlete side of him that's like, I'm not leaving here.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I'm not interacting with anybody until I beat you.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Until I get a win.
- 6:04Speaker 4: Until I get a win.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Until I get a win.
- 6:05Speaker 4: And I'm being stubborn, too, because, you know, I'm competitive also,
- 6:09Speaker 4: and I'm like, I can't let you get this win,
- 6:11Speaker 4: but do you see these flamingos walking around us right now?
- 6:14Speaker 4: So I'm trying to concentrate because I got all these
- 6:16Speaker 4: flamingos walking in the background of him, and I'm trying
- 6:20Speaker 4: to concentrate.
- 6:21Speaker 1: You know what's really crazy when you have that? Competitive, like,
- 6:26Speaker 1: just competitiveness in you, and you get in competitive mode. Bro,
- 6:30Speaker 1: you don't see nothing, you don't hear nothing around you.
- 6:33Speaker 4: Oh yeah, he clicked! It clicks.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yeah, it ain't, bro.
- 6:36Speaker 4: In his brain.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I don't even think Neil Long could have gotten me
- 6:39Speaker 1: off that table. I mean, that's how competitive I am.
- 6:43Speaker 1: If I'm into something, bro, I'm like, I at least
- 6:46Speaker 1: got to, I got to feel some sort of success.
- 6:49Speaker 2: I got to feel something. I got to get a win.
- 6:50Speaker 2: I got to get something. How'd you feel that night
- 6:52Speaker 2: after you left? Bad.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Bad.
- 6:56Speaker 2: Terrible.
- 6:57Speaker 4: He was in that Denzel mode.
- 6:58Speaker 2: I'm leaving here with something.
- 6:59Speaker 4: Right.
- 6:59Speaker 3: So I first met you because a mutual friend of ours,
- 7:03Speaker 3: Juan Pope, Jay Pope. What was his name? Chain?
- 7:06Speaker 2: What was his name on Family Matters?
- 7:08Speaker 4: Oh, my gosh. We had the funniest guest star name.
- 7:12Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:12Speaker 2: So he was the nicest guy in the world, a
- 7:14Speaker 2: good friend of ours. He played the bully.
- 7:16Speaker 4: He played a bully named Chain.
- 7:19Speaker 3: This dude was like a trained thespian. So he's playing Chain,
- 7:22Speaker 3: and then he brought you to UCLA.
- 7:24Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 7:25Speaker 3: And because this dude, you ever hoop with him?
- 7:31Speaker 4: Yeah. Oh, we used to hoop too. Yeah, we'd hoop
- 7:33Speaker 4: every day.
- 7:33Speaker 3: That's why I got jailed.
- 7:34Speaker 4: That's what T.L. is a different animal. Now, let's switch gears.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Let me finish my story. This is where you can win?
- 7:39Speaker 4: Yeah, let's switch gears. I still got a win. I
- 7:42Speaker 4: got a win on him, though, in basketball for a
- 7:45Speaker 4: different reason, but we can go back to that.
- 7:46Speaker 3: This dude is a real hooper.
- 7:48Speaker 2: I'm going to say something.
- 7:49Speaker 3: You correct me if I'm wrong. Had there not been
- 7:53Speaker 3: all this.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Child stardom, you could have probably played Division I basketball.
- 8:02Speaker 4: I could have come off the bench for somebody insignificant.
- 8:06Speaker 2: No, Jaleel, you can play. I'm not talking, it ain't
- 8:08Speaker 2: got to be Pac-12, Big Ten.
- 8:10Speaker 4: No, listen, I definitely.
- 8:12Speaker 2: You could have started at Austin Peay.
- 8:14Speaker 4: That's insignificant.
- 8:16Speaker 3: Say Bonaventure, Colgate.
- 8:17Speaker 4: I actually take that as a compliment.
- 8:18Speaker 3: You got a.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Guy giving you props that blew both of his quads
- 8:22Speaker 1: up trying to.
- 8:24Speaker 2: I can hear you. Oh, damn. You all right.
- 8:29Speaker 3: My bad.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Carry on.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yes. So anyway, I'm giving him compliments because I've seen
- 8:33Speaker 3: him play.
- 8:33Speaker 4: Yeah, we played a lot.
- 8:35Speaker 5: And.
- 8:36Speaker 3: The way you can black out, he can black out.
- 8:40Speaker 3: Don't let the smile and the laugh fool you. He
- 8:44Speaker 3: had one of the best fights in celebrity basketball history.
- 8:48Speaker 4: Are you going to bring that up?
- 8:49Speaker 2: Oh, wow. I don't think I've had it.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Because people would think it's Jaleel. Family matters.
- 8:54Speaker 2: These motherfuckers was tussling.
- 8:56Speaker 4: He's about king.
- 8:57Speaker 3: He's doing 6'5, white guy, 230 pounds, him and Jaleel wrestling.
- 9:02Speaker 3: We didn't even break it up because we wanted to
- 9:03Speaker 3: see if he could really fight. He's like.
- 9:05Speaker 2: This motherfucker can fight. And then we broke it up.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Blacked out.
- 9:10Speaker 2: He swung on him. They were swinging.
- 9:13Speaker 4: You know, it's funny.
- 9:14Speaker 3: And he wasn't even, see all these new muscles?
- 9:16Speaker 2: NBA.
- 9:17Speaker 3: He didn't have all that. He was a thin, young guy.
- 9:19Speaker 3: This motherfucker.
- 9:20Speaker 4: NBA, NBA E-League was just different. It brought something out
- 9:23Speaker 4: of us, man. What a special time.
- 9:24Speaker 2: Yes, it was.
- 9:25Speaker 3: It really was.
- 9:25Speaker 4: We'll never see that again. I'm telling you, we're never
- 9:27Speaker 4: going to see it again.
- 9:28Speaker 3: You're right.
- 9:28Speaker 2: I'm glad I got in, like, on.
- 9:31Speaker 3: The back end of that.
- 9:32Speaker 4: And the reason why we're never going to see it
- 9:34Speaker 4: again is really one thing. Cell phones. Nobody was in
- 9:38Speaker 4: there recording.
- 9:39Speaker 3: Right.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Cell phones.
- 9:40Speaker 4: And you had the biggest names in the business. You had,
- 9:43Speaker 4: you know, Tobey Maguire. You had Leo on occasion.
- 9:46Speaker 5: Ice Cube.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Ice Cube.
- 9:47Speaker 5: Snoop.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Jamie Foxx.
- 9:48Speaker 4: Will Ferrell. You know, and it was mixed with agents
- 9:53Speaker 4: and managers who also, we know, think they have a
- 9:57Speaker 4: bigger deal than the talent.
- 9:58Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 9:58Speaker 5: Right.
- 10:00Speaker 4: All those egos in a closed gym and give us
- 10:03Speaker 4: actual NBA uniforms sponsored by the NBA. Trainers and stretching.
- 10:08Speaker 2: We thought we was in the league.
- 10:10Speaker 4: Hey, listen, people were flying back. Can I tell my story?
- 10:14Speaker 2: The greatest story?
- 10:15Speaker 4: Go ahead.
- 10:16Speaker 3: I've never seen no shit. We are all in the
- 10:18Speaker 3: gym watching Brian McKnight sing the national anthem for All-Star.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Right?
- 10:26Speaker 3: Boom. We play.
- 10:28Speaker 2: The next game, Brian McKnight was right here.
- 10:31Speaker 3: He jumped on a plane and raced.
- 10:33Speaker 2: To get to his game. That's how serious this was
- 10:35Speaker 2: for us.
- 10:35Speaker 4: Oh, I'm already.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Bro, trust me. I know. I was there. I saw it. Like,
- 10:40Speaker 2: I wasn't really in L.A.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Like that.
- 10:42Speaker 5: Right.
- 10:42Speaker 1: But then I'm looking around. Like you said, it was
- 10:44Speaker 1: just like... It was like a room of the who's who,
- 10:46Speaker 1: to be quite honest.
- 10:47Speaker 4: And it was a closed gym, too.
- 10:48Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 10:49Speaker 2: So, I mean.
- 10:50Speaker 1: not anybody just come up and get in there like
- 10:52Speaker 1: you gotta have an invite you gotta know somebody.
- 10:55Speaker 4: It got to the point even in the stands where
- 10:57Speaker 4: it was like it was bad ones in the stands
- 10:59Speaker 4: because the women were trying to get in there because
- 11:01Speaker 4: they knew who was.
- 11:02Speaker 6: In in there Leonardo absolutely so anyway it was you
- 11:06Speaker 6: know the games would get heated it's actually kind of
- 11:09Speaker 6: a life regret to a certain degree because I didn't
- 11:11Speaker 6: understand the way I grew up I just didn't understand
- 11:14Speaker 6: politics You.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Know what I'm saying? You know what I'm saying? I
- 11:17Speaker 4: didn't understand that, you know, you're supposed to let your
- 11:21Speaker 4: boss win. You know, you're supposed to let somebody who
- 11:24Speaker 4: could be a potential boss win. And I always played
- 11:27Speaker 4: my hardest. I played fair. I never tried to play dirty.
- 11:30Speaker 4: I never wanted to, you know, undercut anybody or anything
- 11:33Speaker 4: like that. But between here and here, hey man, we
- 11:35Speaker 4: can bump. You know what I'm saying? I had no problems.
- 11:38Speaker 4: I had no problems with that. And when I look
- 11:41Speaker 4: back on it, I'm just like, damn, like, Wow, so
- 11:44Speaker 4: that's why I was never on Modern Family.
- 11:48Speaker 3: So word got out.
- 11:49Speaker 2: So you ruined the relationship. You ruined some.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Of your— Sometimes I would end up probably affecting a
- 11:54Speaker 4: relationship a lot more than I ever even realized. As
- 11:56Speaker 4: a matter of fact, I ran into the executive producer
- 11:59Speaker 4: for Modern Family, and I was with my wife then,
- 12:01Speaker 4: and we were only engaged at the time, and we
- 12:04Speaker 4: were at Bar on 4 at Neiman Marcus. I love
- 12:07Speaker 4: to chill here. And so we had borrowed four near markets.
- 12:10Speaker 4: And I see this dude shoe shopping in the background.
- 12:12Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, man.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Levitan?
- 12:13Speaker 4: No, it was the other one.
- 12:14Speaker 3: It was Lloyd.
- 12:16Speaker 4: So I turn to my wife. And I'm like, yo,
- 12:20Speaker 4: this dude over here, he and I used to play basketball.
- 12:22Speaker 3: He was an angry little motherfucker, too.
- 12:23Speaker 4: But I used to get the better of him. And
- 12:25Speaker 4: he really didn't like it. So if he passes me,
- 12:28Speaker 4: he may speak, he may not. I'm just letting you
- 12:30Speaker 4: know that happens in our town where people get this
- 12:31Speaker 4: close to each other. and don't say nothing it's personal
- 12:35Speaker 4: right and so i'm like all right so i just
- 12:36Speaker 4: set her up for it all right cool and uh
- 12:39Speaker 4: go back to eating that chili and sure enough he
- 12:42Speaker 4: starts coming our way and lord i see him he's
- 12:45Speaker 4: got his hands in his pocket he actually comes over
- 12:47Speaker 4: and he's like hey how's it going you know you
- 12:51Speaker 4: know he was real dry personality right i'm like what's
- 12:54Speaker 4: up chris man how you doing you doing he's all
- 12:55Speaker 4: right this is my lady man he's like Yeah, this
- 12:58Speaker 4: guy used to give me a real hard time on
- 13:00Speaker 4: the basketball court. You know, real dry. Just real dry.
- 13:03Speaker 4: I had to just stop him. Just be like, Chris,
- 13:06Speaker 4: I really hope that we've let that go, man. Like,
- 13:08Speaker 4: we're a lot older now. Those were some great games
- 13:10Speaker 4: and we'll never live again. And it was kind of
- 13:12Speaker 4: like this weird, cool moment between us, actually, where it
- 13:15Speaker 4: was like an apology without an apology. But he came
- 13:18Speaker 4: over and delivered exactly what I thought was Could happen,
- 13:21Speaker 4: except it ended up more positive. But that's how serious
- 13:24Speaker 4: it was, man. There was a gang of people on
- 13:28Speaker 4: the executive side, too. And if you was executive, too,
- 13:30Speaker 4: and you really just physically had no business being out there,
- 13:33Speaker 4: I was going to go at you.
- 13:34Speaker 3: Let me ask you something. Did you feel like you
- 13:39Speaker 3: had to put a little bit more on it because
- 13:40Speaker 3: of who you were on TV?
- 13:43Speaker 4: Absolutely. But you played enough ball with me to know.
- 13:48Speaker 4: It didn't necessarily come from a place of like... Where
- 13:51Speaker 4: I felt like I needed to be, I needed to
- 13:54Speaker 4: project an edge.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:56Speaker 4: I just needed to let you know, if you thought
- 13:58Speaker 4: I was an easy win.
- 14:00Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:01Speaker 4: You got the wrong one.
- 14:02Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 14:03Speaker 4: You got the wrong, and I love playing, I love
- 14:05Speaker 4: playing East Coast ball too. Because.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Tell us the difference.
- 14:08Speaker 4: The difference is, East Coast basketball players, they always want
- 14:11Speaker 4: to dribble the air out the damn basketball.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Sure do.
- 14:13Speaker 4: They all want to cross you up. They're more concerned
- 14:15Speaker 4: about crossing you up than finishing the buckets.
- 14:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 14:17Speaker 2: Which is common. They want to get the ooh-ah.
- 14:18Speaker 4: They want to get the.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Big ooh-ah on you.
- 14:20Speaker 4: Sham God. West Coast, oh my gosh, right?
- 14:24Speaker 2: Yeah, they want the million dollar move with the two
- 14:27Speaker 2: cent finish.
- 14:28Speaker 4: With the two cent finish, right? And also on the
- 14:32Speaker 4: East Coast, they don't play AM1, all right? So that
- 14:34Speaker 4: creates a real volatile game point situation all the time, right?
- 14:38Speaker 4: And West Coast ballplayers, we shoot jump shots. So, you know,
- 14:42Speaker 4: two dribbles quick, pull up, boom, hit you at the elbow.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Right.
- 14:45Speaker 4: If you're not going to play no defense, that's the
- 14:47Speaker 4: other thing about East Coast. Unless there's a coach involved,
- 14:50Speaker 4: these dudes don't play no defense. They got the baggiest
- 14:52Speaker 4: pants out there, all cool and everything like that.
- 14:54Speaker 3: You're going to get a lot of comments.
- 14:55Speaker 4: But this is all phantom defense, right? Now, I'm saying
- 14:58Speaker 4: if there's a coach involved, I'm not saying East Coast
- 14:59Speaker 4: can't play no defense, but there better be a coach involved. Streetball,
- 15:03Speaker 4: they play no defense. They are so... We shooting jumpers.
- 15:06Speaker 4: You're not playing any defense. Let me get one step
- 15:08Speaker 4: inside this three-point line, and I'm pulling you.
- 15:10Speaker 3: I'm pulling you, right?
- 15:11Speaker 4: So I would love playing those kind of games. And
- 15:14Speaker 4: then the ooh-ah would switch because if I hit a bucket,
- 15:18Speaker 4: it was a real ooh.
- 15:19Speaker 3: You let this.
- 15:21Speaker 2: Little nerdy motherfucker punch your ass? Exactly.
- 15:24Speaker 4: So it was just like I knew I wasn't projecting
- 15:26Speaker 4: physically what I was on the show. So that always
- 15:29Speaker 4: kind of like– I'm not going to say it annoyed me.
- 15:31Speaker 4: It just, it was, it was weird to me.
- 15:32Speaker 2: They couldn't separate the two individuals.
- 15:35Speaker 4: It was like, I take everything at face value. You
- 15:37Speaker 4: know what I'm saying? Like you just dap me up
- 15:38Speaker 4: coming here. This man has professional athlete hands. If he
- 15:42Speaker 4: puts his hands on you, you know, he's built differently.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Okay.
- 15:48Speaker 4: But that's something you got to know. Like there's only
- 15:49Speaker 4: a handful of people whose hands even feel like that.
- 15:52Speaker 4: Kawhi Leonard, Khalil Mack, whatever. When I dap up, my
- 15:55Speaker 4: hand disappears inside their hand. So let's go back. Let's
- 15:58Speaker 4: go back.
- 15:59Speaker 1: But that explains why I've never really been on TV.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Cause I went to those games and I'm like, I'm
- 16:05Speaker 1: like Jaleel. There was no holding back on none of that.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Like my game, no nothing. So to hear him say
- 16:12Speaker 1: that and then understand like, yo, like, I'm coming into
- 16:16Speaker 1: a gym with, like you said, all these top execs,
- 16:18Speaker 1: you got agents, you got actors.
- 16:20Speaker 2: These are famous A-listers.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Me coming into the fold, like people knew me on
- 16:25Speaker 1: the football field, but then I'm like, yo, a lot
- 16:27Speaker 1: of people knew that I played basketball.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Athleticism, it kind of, they saw it coming before I
- 16:32Speaker 2: actually got there.
- 16:33Speaker 1: So to go out there and play on the court
- 16:35Speaker 1: with all these guys, I'm like, yo, I'm not holding
- 16:37Speaker 1: nothing back.
- 16:38Speaker 2: You're going to get dunked on. You're going to get
- 16:40Speaker 2: crossed over. You're going to get your top blocked. I'm
- 16:43Speaker 2: doing everything.
- 16:44Speaker 4: Now, the one thing I have to say, I did
- 16:46Speaker 4: talk T.O. into losing a game once.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:50Speaker 4: I love it. This dude remembers everything. I talked him
- 16:53Speaker 4: into losing a game once. We were playing at this
- 16:57Speaker 4: friend's house. They have an indoor basketball court at their home.
- 17:01Speaker 4: I mean, it's a replica of Staples Center.
- 17:04Speaker 2: It was the Lakers.
- 17:04Speaker 4: It was the Lakers joint, right? It was the Lakers joint, right? And,
- 17:08Speaker 4: you know, we get some good competitive games in there.
- 17:11Speaker 4: So T was in there doing his thing. And listen,
- 17:13Speaker 4: first of all, if the ball's coming off the rim
- 17:15Speaker 4: and we're running... If he's on the wing, anybody stop it.
- 17:19Speaker 4: He gonna do what he gonna do, all right? So
- 17:21Speaker 4: you really want to kind of slow down the game
- 17:23Speaker 4: when you're playing T.O. Get into a half-court set situation.
- 17:26Speaker 2: He want to make it playoffs.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Harvard offense. You want to get into a half-court set
- 17:31Speaker 4: with this dude so that you can... Make him think,
- 17:34Speaker 4: make him move around, make him be stand still for
- 17:36Speaker 4: a second, right? And I told my boy in a second,
- 17:39Speaker 4: it was a tight game. I said, look, I'm going
- 17:41Speaker 4: to start taunting T.O.
- 17:42Speaker 3: When it gets to the end.
- 17:44Speaker 4: And sure enough, when we got to the end, I
- 17:46Speaker 4: started taunting him. Because his three can be a little
- 17:50Speaker 4: suspect sometimes. His three can be a little suspect sometimes.
- 17:53Speaker 2: That's fair.
- 17:54Speaker 4: His three can be a little suspect sometimes. So I knew.
- 17:56Speaker 4: You're going to pull that motherfucker off. That's fair. So
- 17:58Speaker 4: I told him. It was game point. I said, hey,
- 18:00Speaker 4: sag off him. Let him shoot that shit. If you
- 18:04Speaker 4: say that to T.O., guess what?
- 18:06Speaker 5: Boom.
- 18:07Speaker 2: It's going up.
- 18:07Speaker 4: It's up.
- 18:08Speaker 2: It's going up.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Not a single pass. Not a single pass. They're kicking
- 18:12Speaker 4: our ass, too, by the way. So we've come back.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Right.
- 18:15Speaker 4: But not a single pass.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I had a Kobe moment.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Gotcha. No pass. Understood.
- 18:18Speaker 4: I said, sag off him. Let him shoot that shit.
- 18:20Speaker 4: And I mean, as soon as I said it, I
- 18:22Speaker 4: couldn't get shit out of my mouth before it was
- 18:23Speaker 4: already up.
- 18:24Speaker 2: I'm sorry.
- 18:25Speaker 5: All right.
- 18:26Speaker 2: Clank, clank, clank. Clank, clank, clank.
- 18:28Speaker 4: It come off the rim. Now, you know me. I'm
- 18:30Speaker 4: going to come back. I'm going to think about it.
- 18:31Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm screaming at you. I'm like, yo, three
- 18:33Speaker 4: passes minimum.
- 18:34Speaker 2: Minimum.
- 18:35Speaker 4: Because again, nobody's rotating in pickup ball. One, two, three.
- 18:39Speaker 4: You just don't catch somebody slipping. We win the game.
- 18:43Speaker 3: We win the game. All right.
- 18:44Speaker 2: Let's go back.
- 18:45Speaker 4: That's one of my favorite pickup game moments ever.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I want to go back.
- 18:47Speaker 2: I want to go back. I don't want to hear that.
- 18:50Speaker 3: I want to go back to baby Jalil. A lot
- 18:53Speaker 3: of people know your origin story, but maybe our audience don't.
- 18:57Speaker 3: Before Family Matters, were you this kid that was doing commercials?
- 19:02Speaker 2: Were you doing plays? How did you come back?
- 19:04Speaker 4: I did about 50 national commercials, man, before Family Matters.
- 19:07Speaker 2: How many? About 50. Wow.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Oreo cookies, Toys R Us, Kid, Goodyear. I mean, you
- 19:14Speaker 4: name it. I did so many national commercials. And I
- 19:17Speaker 4: was on Jefferson's.
- 19:18Speaker 3: I was on Mr.
- 19:19Speaker 4: Belvedere. I didn't realize to what degree, as a child
- 19:24Speaker 4: at least, I was a veteran by the time I
- 19:26Speaker 4: got the show at age 12. Age 12, I'm like,
- 19:29Speaker 4: I really, when I look back at that experience, I
- 19:31Speaker 4: actually looked at the first season of Family Matters. I
- 19:34Speaker 4: wanted to look at it during pandemics. And so I
- 19:36Speaker 4: watched all the episodes of the first season.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Did you really?
- 19:37Speaker 4: Yeah, I wanted to watch the first season. I'm like,
- 19:39Speaker 4: it's an out-of-body experience for me because I'm like, who
- 19:41Speaker 4: is that kid? You know what I'm saying?
- 19:43Speaker 3: We had nothing but time.
- 19:44Speaker 4: It really is. And we had time. Nothing but time.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Exactly.
- 19:47Speaker 4: But from episode 12 to episode 18, just watching those
- 19:52Speaker 4: six episodes, just the growth. All I was watching was,
- 19:56Speaker 4: I said, this is a kid getting his reps in.
- 19:58Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? If you have an aptitude
- 20:01Speaker 4: for anything, sports, acting, whatever it is, if you get
- 20:06Speaker 4: reps in with the right tutelage, You're just going to
- 20:09Speaker 4: get better leaps and bounds.
- 20:11Speaker 3: But where did that character come from? Was that something
- 20:13Speaker 3: you used to play with in the house?
- 20:15Speaker 4: No, it was just.
- 20:16Speaker 2: That was your audition.
- 20:17Speaker 4: It literally was... Tell me what.
- 20:19Speaker 3: I'm sorry. Tell me what.
- 20:23Speaker 2: It called for. The casting breakdown said... The.
- 20:25Speaker 4: Casting breakdown said... Again, it was a different time back then.
- 20:27Speaker 4: The casting breakdown said Rick Moranis type. They didn't even
- 20:31Speaker 4: have a black archetype to compare it to. They said
- 20:34Speaker 4: Rick Moranis type. And in the weirdest way, the way
- 20:36Speaker 4: my brain works, I was excited about that. Because I
- 20:38Speaker 4: could never get the tough kid roles. I could never
- 20:41Speaker 4: get the kid who.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Chain. You could never be Chain.
- 20:44Speaker 4: I could never be Chain. They would never cast me
- 20:46Speaker 4: to be Chain. Exactly right.
- 20:48Speaker 2: So this is where Urkel was born? Yeah.
- 20:51Speaker 4: So it was an audition where I wanted to get
- 20:54Speaker 4: the job so I can get a second Genesis. My
- 20:56Speaker 4: parents wouldn't let me get toys or anything expensive outside
- 21:00Speaker 4: of my birthday or Christmas. So they told me if
- 21:04Speaker 4: I got the job, I can get one of anything
- 21:06Speaker 4: that I wanted. And I knew Sega Genesis had just
- 21:08Speaker 4: come out in August. The audition came up in September.
- 21:10Speaker 4: So I was like, I'm a strategic dude.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Right. I was like, this dude is very calculated. That's
- 21:15Speaker 2: how he beat you in basketball and ping pong. Yeah,
- 21:17Speaker 2: very calculated. Now I see what's going on. I see.
- 21:21Speaker 4: So you were back then. So you came into the audition,
- 21:23Speaker 4: glasses flooding?
- 21:24Speaker 5: No.
- 21:25Speaker 4: So when I came into the audition at first, my
- 21:27Speaker 4: mom couldn't even take me on the audition, which was rare.
- 21:29Speaker 4: So she had a coworker pick me up from school.
- 21:32Speaker 4: And this is back in the 90s when you can
- 21:33Speaker 4: have anybody pick your kid up from school without, without
- 21:36Speaker 4: longer to an act.
- 21:37Speaker 3: No parental consent.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Nothing.
- 21:39Speaker 4: Just a raggedy car just come swooping up in the
- 21:41Speaker 4: freaking car.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm coming to pick up Jaleel White.
- 21:44Speaker 4: Exactly. Who are you? And the only reason I knew
- 21:46Speaker 4: it was the truth was because my clothes for the
- 21:49Speaker 4: audition were in the backseat of her car. So I
- 21:51Speaker 4: knew my mom had given her the clothes.
- 21:52Speaker 2: Oh, you didn't even know the lady?
- 21:54Speaker 4: No, I did not even know the lady.
- 21:56Speaker 2: That's crazy.
- 21:56Speaker 4: This was a coworker of my mom. Parents used to
- 21:59Speaker 4: have to sneak off of work to take their kids
- 22:01Speaker 4: on auditions.
- 22:01Speaker 3: Right, that's true.
- 22:02Speaker 4: So my mom got in a jam and the audition
- 22:04Speaker 4: got pushed up and a co-worker volunteered to do it
- 22:06Speaker 4: because the co-worker was trying to become a makeup artist.
- 22:09Speaker 4: I'll take him. Bingo.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Right?
- 22:12Speaker 4: So she wanted to just get on the lot to
- 22:13Speaker 4: see if she could maybe meet some people or something, right?
- 22:15Speaker 2: We're going to have to call CPS on your mama.
- 22:17Speaker 4: No, my mama's fine. Hey, man, it was different back then, man.
- 22:21Speaker 2: I know.
- 22:22Speaker 4: Good parents would roll their kids around with five, six,
- 22:24Speaker 4: seven deep in a pickup truck. No seatbelts at all.
- 22:27Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Right.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Even on the back of a pickup truck.
- 22:32Speaker 3: Remember, listen, remember in the station wagon where you'd be
- 22:35Speaker 3: facing this way and the car's going this way with
- 22:36Speaker 3: no seatbelt.
- 22:37Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:38Speaker 4: So it's just a different generation of parenting back then, though.
- 22:41Speaker 4: So I went on the audition, and I actually was
- 22:44Speaker 4: upset on the first audition because my.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Dad— Wait, wait, I need specifics.
- 22:48Speaker 3: What do you have on?
- 22:49Speaker 4: I have some too tight jeans and a too little
- 22:52Speaker 4: shirt that my mom wanted to sell.
- 22:53Speaker 3: No glasses yet.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Well, I'm about to explain the glasses that my mom
- 22:57Speaker 4: wanted to sell at a yard sale, and she just
- 22:59Speaker 4: thought it would look funny on me if it was
- 23:00Speaker 4: just too little. It was that simple. And then I
- 23:04Speaker 4: wanted the glasses with the tape in the middle from
- 23:07Speaker 4: Revenge of the Nerds. but my dad is a chronic procrastinator.
- 23:10Speaker 4: And so he just sent his glasses that he would
- 23:13Speaker 4: use to keep particles from flying into his lab when
- 23:16Speaker 4: he was grinding. My dad's a dentist.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 23:18Speaker 4: So his glasses were just big and just, and just
- 23:21Speaker 4: floated on my face. So they were, they were sized
- 23:24Speaker 4: for a man and I'm the 12 year old boy. So,
- 23:26Speaker 4: but again, when you're that age, when that happens, you think, Oh,
- 23:30Speaker 4: this is the worst thing in the world. I didn't
- 23:32Speaker 4: get exactly what I wanted.
- 23:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:34Speaker 4: And, um, And I remember just trying to compensate for that,
- 23:39Speaker 4: I decided to walk into the room as the character.
- 23:43Speaker 4: And it was just something I thought of. And I
- 23:45Speaker 4: was just like, I'm never going to let them meet Jaleel.
- 23:47Speaker 4: I just walked in the room and introduced myself as
- 23:50Speaker 4: Steve Earle.
- 23:51Speaker 2: So he created a character.
- 23:52Speaker 4: On the fly. And my muse for it was Martin
- 23:59Speaker 4: Short's character, Ed Grimley. Ed Grimley and a little bit.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Of Pee Wee Herman.
- 24:03Speaker 4: I can see that. And since it was a black
- 24:05Speaker 4: kid doing a bad Ed Grimley and Pee Wee Herman,
- 24:08Speaker 4: it seemed original. And that's what I've always kind of
- 24:12Speaker 4: snickered at when it comes to creation. It's like if
- 24:14Speaker 4: Johnny Depp, uses Keith Richards as his muse for Jack Sparrow.
- 24:23Speaker 4: That's genius. But if I did something like that, nobody's
- 24:27Speaker 4: been thinking that I had the brain power to make
- 24:30Speaker 4: the association with another character archetype that's outside of my
- 24:34Speaker 4: race and outside of my culture. And quite frankly, I've
- 24:36Speaker 4: always been that way. I don't care if it was
- 24:38Speaker 4: Wes Anderson movies, Quentin Tarantino movies, whatever. I watch everything.
- 24:42Speaker 4: So I could be inspired by anything. And in that moment,
- 24:44Speaker 4: I was inspired by two actors that you know, don't
- 24:47Speaker 4: look like me. And so because of it, he seemed
- 24:48Speaker 4: like me. It seemed like it was an original character.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So do you think this character kind of almost put
- 24:52Speaker 1: you in a box to where you couldn't do any, like.
- 24:55Speaker 4: More formidable? See, I disagree with that, though.
- 24:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not saying it is. I'm asking.
- 25:00Speaker 4: No, no, no, it's a fair question.
- 25:01Speaker 3: That happens a lot, right? When you become this big,
- 25:03Speaker 3: big character.
- 25:04Speaker 1: And they can't see you outside of that to where
- 25:06Speaker 1: you can't do any of the action or the suspense
- 25:10Speaker 1: or the more, like, you know, grimy movies.
- 25:13Speaker 4: That's nonsense for the people who don't understand the way
- 25:15Speaker 4: our business works. If Jerry Bruckheimer had ever decided to
- 25:17Speaker 4: stick me in any one of his action movies, everybody
- 25:19Speaker 4: would have just thought I was an action star now.
- 25:21Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 25:21Speaker 4: It's about branding. It's about who do you work for,
- 25:24Speaker 4: you know? And the other thing is when you do
- 25:26Speaker 4: something at a high level, then it's not easy to
- 25:32Speaker 4: usurp what you've done if you now have to take
- 25:34Speaker 4: a step down to continue doing it. So I'm going
- 25:37Speaker 4: to give you a good example. Okay. If you play
- 25:39Speaker 4: for a championship caliber football team.
- 25:41Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 25:42Speaker 4: And now you have some contract issues, and now all
- 25:44Speaker 4: of a sudden, now you gotta go play for the
- 25:45Speaker 4: Tennessee Titans. It's gonna be hard for you to get
- 25:47Speaker 4: the same level of national exposure, because they're not a
- 25:50Speaker 4: championship level team. And you know the difference, as soon
- 25:53Speaker 4: as you get there in the locker room, you're like,
- 25:55Speaker 4: I can't win here, I can't shine here, I'm just
- 25:57Speaker 4: surviving here. So I think that happens more in a
- 26:01Speaker 4: lot of actors' careers, no matter what characters you end
- 26:03Speaker 4: up playing. And you find out, I was just listening
- 26:05Speaker 4: to the cast of Game of Thrones, and they were
- 26:07Speaker 4: talking about You know, what an adjustment it was when
- 26:10Speaker 4: the show went off the air and people still expecting
- 26:12Speaker 4: them to be their characters. But on a deeper level,
- 26:15Speaker 4: it's like, no, no, no, no. Game of Thrones and
- 26:18Speaker 4: HBO is a cultural and professional phenomenon. If you get
- 26:22Speaker 4: to work for HBO, you are working for the best
- 26:24Speaker 4: in the business, the best DPs, the best cameramen, the
- 26:26Speaker 4: best editing, the best everything, right?
- 26:29Speaker 3: The best catering.
- 26:30Speaker 4: Okay, so guess what? If the next job that comes
- 26:32Speaker 4: your way that may be an opportunity for you to
- 26:35Speaker 4: pay your bills and continue your craft comes from CW.
- 26:40Speaker 4: It's going to look different. It comes from BET. It's
- 26:43Speaker 4: going to look different. It's not going to stack up
- 26:45Speaker 4: to what HBO does. So ultimately, it was like I
- 26:50Speaker 4: worked for some guys who were just, they were all
- 26:52Speaker 4: about family television. That's it. If I had gotten an
- 26:54Speaker 4: opportunity to get some jobs out of that that were
- 26:57Speaker 4: as big, that would have changed things for me. So really,
- 27:02Speaker 4: to my benefit, time has been on my side.
- 27:05Speaker 2: So the first season, you were a guest star.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Yep.
- 27:08Speaker 3: And you did six episodes, eight episodes?
- 27:10Speaker 4: No, I did the entire back nine.
- 27:11Speaker 3: You did nine, okay.
- 27:13Speaker 4: You get 13 episodes, and if you get picked up,
- 27:15Speaker 4: you get a nine.
- 27:16Speaker 3: What is the buzz like with this new young kid
- 27:18Speaker 3: on the show? Because you took the show a total
- 27:21Speaker 3: different direction. I'm sure that the producers weren't prepared for it.
- 27:24Speaker 4: You know, when I talk about it now, I just
- 27:26Speaker 4: like to talk about it from the standpoint of being naive.
- 27:28Speaker 4: Because it's beautiful.
- 27:29Speaker 3: No, I'm talking about when you watched it during a pandemic.
- 27:33Speaker 2: Right. We were like, this is a bad little motherfucker.
- 27:36Speaker 4: When I'm watching the first season, like I did during pandemic,
- 27:39Speaker 4: it's an out-of-body experience. It really is. I'm seeing my
- 27:43Speaker 4: thought processing when I'm watching myself on screen. But more importantly,
- 27:48Speaker 4: I'm geeked up off of the growth. Because from episode
- 27:51Speaker 4: to episode, I can see myself doing, making new choices.
- 27:53Speaker 4: And also being given new freedoms. I don't think people
- 27:57Speaker 4: understand that. People think that, you know, they yell action
- 27:59Speaker 4: and you just go out there and do what the
- 28:01Speaker 4: hell you want. No, you know, you have to be
- 28:03Speaker 4: lucky enough to work for somebody who's giving you the ball.
- 28:06Speaker 2: They trusting you.
- 28:07Speaker 4: They trusting you. You know what it's like if somebody,
- 28:10Speaker 4: you'll play for a team, they'll give you 10 to
- 28:11Speaker 4: 12 targets a game.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Yeah, we know that.
- 28:13Speaker 4: That's what we do.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Me and you.
- 28:16Speaker 4: So if you was getting 10 to 12 targets a game,
- 28:18Speaker 4: I was getting 15 at that time.
- 28:19Speaker 3: So let me ask you something.
- 28:21Speaker 2: This new kid comes on.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Oh, I'm sorry.
- 28:23Speaker 4: I didn't know you were here.
- 28:25Speaker 3: I'm sorry.
- 28:26Speaker 2: I keep forgetting you. I'm sorry.
- 28:28Speaker 1: This is Get to the Point with Terrell Lawrence and
- 28:30Speaker 1: Chris Spencer.
- 28:31Speaker 2: I'm sorry. My apologies.
- 28:33Speaker 1: It's okay.
- 28:33Speaker 3: I'll get you back sometime during the show. Was that
- 28:38Speaker 3: a problem?
- 28:39Speaker 2: All of a sudden, this kid is coming, I know you,
- 28:42Speaker 2: I just, listen. I know, I know. I just wanna
- 28:44Speaker 2: hear it.
- 28:44Speaker 4: I just feel, you know, I just feel bad, because
- 28:46Speaker 4: after all these years, you know, it's like, I, I.
- 28:48Speaker 3: Let me get the question out. Was it a problem
- 28:50Speaker 3: that all of a sudden, this reoccurring character is now
- 28:55Speaker 3: starting to steal the limelight from people who were there? And,
- 29:01Speaker 3: did you feel it, I guess now you're 13 or 14,
- 29:04Speaker 3: did you feel, when did you start to feel it?
- 29:07Speaker 4: Oh, you felt it immediately. You know, you felt it
- 29:09Speaker 4: immediately on the set that it was a problem.
- 29:12Speaker 2: But you're 12, 13.
- 29:13Speaker 4: How are you?
- 29:14Speaker 2: He's a different 12, 13-year-old. I'm gathering that.
- 29:18Speaker 3: He's a grown-ass man. Yeah, 12 or 13.
- 29:21Speaker 4: I'm still naive as hell.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Yeah, he's 12, but he's acting 21 mentally.
- 29:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:28Speaker 1: How are you processing this and understanding this? And who's
- 29:32Speaker 1: helping you two?
- 29:33Speaker 2: At that age.
- 29:34Speaker 4: You know, I have all credit. I always give credit
- 29:36Speaker 4: to my parents. You know, my father was very protective.
- 29:40Speaker 4: I really, I try to stay away from certain details
- 29:42Speaker 4: of that. I really do on purpose because if the
- 29:46Speaker 4: more light I shine on it all these years later,
- 29:49Speaker 4: it actually just makes it harder for them.
- 29:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 29:51Speaker 2: And you don't want to look like.
- 29:54Speaker 4: And the reality was you don't do 215 episodes if
- 29:56Speaker 4: you don't get over certain things. You know, that's a
- 30:01Speaker 4: hell of a mark to hit in television. And, you know,
- 30:04Speaker 4: Reggie in particular is probably one of the greatest screen
- 30:06Speaker 4: partners I'm ever going to have in my life. You know,
- 30:10Speaker 4: but it's like any workplace situation, you know, where it's like,
- 30:13Speaker 4: you know, for me, when you talk about that, you
- 30:15Speaker 4: talk about junior high school and high school and a
- 30:17Speaker 4: bit of college.
- 30:18Speaker 5: Right.
- 30:19Speaker 4: So how many people can say they even know anybody
- 30:21Speaker 4: from middle school and, you know, in high school anymore?
- 30:26Speaker 4: And for me, it's almost like being a member of
- 30:28Speaker 4: a singing group. It's like once you're a member of
- 30:30Speaker 4: a singing group, people expect you to get together and
- 30:32Speaker 4: just for old time's sake forever. Right. Do the song
- 30:37Speaker 4: for us. Come on, man. You know what I'm saying?
- 30:39Speaker 3: It's like new addition.
- 30:40Speaker 4: Exactly. They stuck. They stuck. And those brothers are going
- 30:43Speaker 4: to be stepping and singing with each other until the end,
- 30:46Speaker 4: because that's just the way the world wants to see them.
- 30:48Speaker 4: And it helps them earn a living. Nobody teaches you
- 30:53Speaker 4: that when you leave this job, you guys all must
- 30:56Speaker 4: forge new identities for yourselves. But try to do it
- 30:59Speaker 4: in a way where you don't have to crap on
- 31:00Speaker 4: everything that you've done that's fantastic. So that's where I
- 31:05Speaker 4: am really with it. That's great. People don't understand how
- 31:09Speaker 4: much I love my former co-stars. And we go out
- 31:11Speaker 4: of the way to stay in touch with each other
- 31:13Speaker 4: in secret ways because I don't need me and Kelly.
- 31:17Speaker 4: I'll never call her Laura. I don't need me and
- 31:19Speaker 4: Kelly and Darius, you know, out having some food and
- 31:24Speaker 4: freaking crustaceans or whatever. And that turns into your reunion
- 31:27Speaker 4: for your camera phone time. I'm like, no, man, these
- 31:30Speaker 4: are old family members getting back together.
- 31:32Speaker 2: I'll call him.
- 31:34Speaker 4: So let me ask you a question. He is too
- 31:36Speaker 4: big to be talking like that. So let me ask
- 31:37Speaker 4: you something.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Now that he's doing that, when you're out in public
- 31:42Speaker 3: and people do that, the.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Voice, they call you Urkel, does that bother you?
- 31:49Speaker 4: So, again, time is on my side. The only people
- 31:52Speaker 4: who do that are people over a certain age.
- 31:55Speaker 2: All right.
- 31:58Speaker 4: The only people who do that are people over a
- 32:00Speaker 4: certain age. So it used to bother me, but now
- 32:04Speaker 4: I get to laugh because millennials don't do that.
- 32:07Speaker 3: But let me ask you something. Is it also our
- 32:08Speaker 3: people too?
- 32:09Speaker 4: No, it could be anybody.
- 32:11Speaker 3: It could be anybody.
- 32:12Speaker 4: Our show definitely crossed all racial lines.
- 32:14Speaker 3: I'm not talking about the people that come up to
- 32:15Speaker 3: you imitating you, calling you the name.
- 32:17Speaker 4: No! No, but it really is. It's just an age thing.
- 32:20Speaker 4: Gen X is going to stay hitting me with it.
- 32:22Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:22Speaker 4: But millennials, man, God, I love my millennials. Oh, my gosh.
- 32:26Speaker 4: They just, I don't know how it is that they
- 32:28Speaker 4: digested the show differently in syndication, watching the show after school.
- 32:32Speaker 4: And then they're Google generation, so they look you up. So,
- 32:35Speaker 4: you know, they only call you Jalil. They only call
- 32:37Speaker 4: me by my name. That's dope. You know, I just
- 32:40Speaker 4: passed through the airport last week. A brother at TSA,
- 32:43Speaker 4: he damn near was like, man, I don't care what
- 32:45Speaker 4: you put through the machine. Just go through, man.
- 32:46Speaker 3: You're good.
- 32:47Speaker 4: He was like, my mama watch your flip side all
- 32:49Speaker 4: the time.
- 32:50Speaker 2: I told you that's my dad's favorite show.
- 32:51Speaker 5: Right?
- 32:51Speaker 4: And so it was like, that means so much to
- 32:53Speaker 4: me for a millennial who knows me telling me how
- 32:55Speaker 4: much his mother loves my current game show. That, for
- 32:59Speaker 4: me now, is a moment that I get a chance
- 33:01Speaker 4: to celebrate what it is to have survived in the
- 33:03Speaker 4: business as long as I have.
- 33:05Speaker 1: The football season is heating up, and every week feels
- 33:07Speaker 1: bigger with DraftKings. DraftKings is now live in all 50 states.
- 33:12Speaker 1: One app, all the football, nationwide. New DraftKings customers. Sign
- 33:17Speaker 1: up with code TO81. Spend $ 5 to get $ 150 in rewards.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Within 14 days. Includes all markets. That's code TO81.
- 33:25Speaker 1: In partnership with DraftKings.
- 33:29Speaker 2: The crown is yours.
- 33:31Speaker 7: We'll be right back. Five Minutes of Smash. You guys
- 33:54Speaker 7: are 200 and how many episodes?
- 33:55Speaker 2: 15 episodes. 215 episodes.
- 33:56Speaker 7: So now you're unemployed.
- 33:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 34:22Speaker 2: You out in the streets.
- 34:24Speaker 4: It really wasn't until after Grown Ups that I was unemployed.
- 34:26Speaker 3: Oh, right.
- 34:27Speaker 4: I did Grown Ups in 2001.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Right.
- 34:29Speaker 4: And then I got introduced to the UPN system. And again,
- 34:32Speaker 4: that's like going from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Titans.
- 34:36Speaker 1: Right.
- 34:37Speaker 2: Or would it be going from NFL to CFL?
- 34:41Speaker 4: Even worse, yes. That's a better analogy.
- 34:45Speaker 2: NFL to CFL. Anyway, looking at the show, that might
- 34:52Speaker 2: be for a job.
- 34:52Speaker 4: No, because people have to understand, again, that's not crapping
- 34:55Speaker 4: on UPN. The shows that were able to do special
- 34:58Speaker 4: things on UPN mean something for black culture. That, absolutely.
- 35:03Speaker 4: But what you don't understand was they were tasked with
- 35:07Speaker 4: making those shows with fewer resources than ABC, CBS, NBC.
- 35:13Speaker 2: The top dogs.
- 35:14Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 35:14Speaker 4: So if anything, I give more credit to those shows
- 35:17Speaker 4: for being as entertaining as they were.
- 35:19Speaker 3: Right, with less.
- 35:20Speaker 4: Octavia Spencer literally just had an interview talking about sharing
- 35:25Speaker 4: her quotes with Jessica Chastain. And Jessica Chastain was like, oh,
- 35:29Speaker 4: my God, like. You poor woman. I didn't know you
- 35:33Speaker 4: act for so little.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Viola talked about that too.
- 35:36Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 35:36Speaker 4: So I'm like, it's levels to this game. And I
- 35:39Speaker 4: always like to make sure it's very important that my
- 35:42Speaker 4: people understand I am never denigrating what we do. You
- 35:45Speaker 4: don't understand that we're asked to do what we do
- 35:49Speaker 4: with fewer resources. So I get really excited when I
- 35:53Speaker 4: get all the rockets and all the toys and all
- 35:55Speaker 4: the things to play with because now I know, okay,
- 35:57Speaker 4: we can really win.
- 35:58Speaker 2: So you're auditioning now after Grown Ups. Yeah.
- 36:01Speaker 4: Is there an audition out there that humbled you? Oh yeah,
- 36:04Speaker 4: there's a few of them.
- 36:06Speaker 3: Training day.
- 36:07Speaker 4: There's a few of them. It was a couple. One,
- 36:12Speaker 4: I auditioned for Fat Albert when Forrest Whitaker was attached
- 36:16Speaker 4: to direct. And I didn't know, but apparently he and
- 36:22Speaker 4: Bill Cosby were not on the same page about the
- 36:24Speaker 4: vision of the movie and he was ultimately removed, but
- 36:29Speaker 4: I had to audition for Forrest. And I've never heard
- 36:33Speaker 4: more quiet after I was done doing my part. It
- 36:36Speaker 4: was an uncomfortable moment for me and Forrest.
- 36:38Speaker 3: Which part did you read for?
- 36:40Speaker 2: Mush Mouth.
- 36:41Speaker 4: So I went in there kind of doing the voice
- 36:43Speaker 4: and everything because I knew I was going to be
- 36:44Speaker 4: wearing the thing over my face and whatever. And again,
- 36:46Speaker 4: that's how much I like, I'm not thinking about image.
- 36:49Speaker 4: I'm thinking about That character is an iconic character within
- 36:52Speaker 4: the framework of Fat Albert. You want to put the
- 36:56Speaker 4: thing over my head and it's just my eyes? I
- 36:58Speaker 4: don't care. So I went out and I started doing
- 36:59Speaker 4: the voice. And Forrest did not like the voice. So
- 37:02Speaker 4: that was the first one. That was a real tough audition.
- 37:05Speaker 3: Being Jalil White, very successful, did you feel a little
- 37:10Speaker 3: bit of disrespect that you had to audition for Fat Albert? Oh, absolutely.
- 37:13Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:13Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. Because I'm listening to you going... Found out
- 37:16Speaker 3: what should have been given to you. Absolutely.
- 37:18Speaker 4: But again, how you how you feel and what your
- 37:22Speaker 4: reality is about to become are just two different things.
- 37:25Speaker 4: So I don't you know, I've had to leave my
- 37:28Speaker 4: ego at the door decades ago. Right. I think the
- 37:33Speaker 4: second one for me was actually this one occurred before
- 37:36Speaker 4: it was the Mod Squad. Yeah, the Mod Squad.
- 37:40Speaker 3: The remake.
- 37:41Speaker 4: I was really, really geeked about that one. I even
- 37:44Speaker 4: called up ABC to get some old episodes I wanted
- 37:47Speaker 4: to watch to see what Clarence had done with the role. Link. Yep, exactly.
- 37:54Speaker 4: I already was actually rocking a little fro when I
- 37:57Speaker 4: was at UCLA. I was kind of going through my
- 37:59Speaker 4: little rebellion stage, and I always kept my hair the
- 38:01Speaker 4: same for that character because I understood as a box-top
- 38:03Speaker 4: fade that that would be associated with that character. So
- 38:06Speaker 4: I did understand that much. So when the season would
- 38:09Speaker 4: be over, I would always shave my head, and I
- 38:11Speaker 4: wanted to be normal again, right? So I remember I
- 38:17Speaker 4: showed up for the audition, and the casting director was
- 38:20Speaker 4: walking towards me in the parking lot. And it was like, hey,
- 38:25Speaker 4: aren't I supposed to be seeing you? She says, oh,
- 38:28Speaker 4: I'm just not feeling well today. I'm so sorry. I
- 38:30Speaker 4: left a message with your agent and I'm just going
- 38:33Speaker 4: to have to do it another day. And it was
- 38:34Speaker 4: just like, I could tell the way she said it.
- 38:37Speaker 4: It was like, I didn't really want to see you anyway.
- 38:40Speaker 4: So I damn sure wasn't waiting around and I'm not
- 38:42Speaker 4: feeling very well for you to come in. And it
- 38:45Speaker 4: was just, you know, it was a humbling moment because
- 38:48Speaker 4: when you used to do auditions in person, now everything's
- 38:50Speaker 4: a self-tape. You know, you really prepare for your auditions.
- 38:53Speaker 4: You try to learn your lines. You try to be
- 38:55Speaker 4: off book. Off book means you know your dialogue.
- 38:58Speaker 3: You might have even hired a coach.
- 38:59Speaker 4: You might have hired a coach. Exactly. So I knew
- 39:01Speaker 4: my stuff. I really wanted to give it a shot
- 39:04Speaker 4: for the role, but again, I'm understanding about power in
- 39:07Speaker 4: the business. I had no idea that Claire Danes actually
- 39:10Speaker 4: had a lot of say over who her co-stars were
- 39:12Speaker 4: going to be. They had anointed her with that much power,
- 39:15Speaker 4: and she was adamant that they got a rapper to
- 39:19Speaker 4: act alongside her because that was what was trending at
- 39:21Speaker 4: the moment was you had to have a hard-edged rapper
- 39:24Speaker 4: next to you. Who ended up getting that? It actually
- 39:26Speaker 4: ended up being Omar.
- 39:27Speaker 3: I was about to say Omar Epps.
- 39:28Speaker 4: Omar did beat out the rapper. though, with just pure
- 39:31Speaker 4: acting ability. So kudos to Omar. Unfortunately, the film was
- 39:34Speaker 4: like it got Razzies that year. It performed so poorly
- 39:38Speaker 4: at the box office. So that's one of those moments
- 39:40Speaker 4: where I know also rejection is God's redirection because when
- 39:44Speaker 4: things don't do well in our town, they need people
- 39:46Speaker 4: to blame yeah so you know if the movie was
- 39:48Speaker 4: bad and now i'm in it now that's where somebody
- 39:52Speaker 4: says oh well you know maybe that's one of the
- 39:53Speaker 4: reasons why the movie didn't do so damn well why'd
- 39:55Speaker 4: you hire urkel to be in it you see what
- 39:57Speaker 4: i'm saying yeah and that's where it turns that's where
- 39:59Speaker 4: the blame game can start to turn very i use
- 40:02Speaker 4: my favorite word that's where it turns into politics and
- 40:04Speaker 4: not reality.
- 40:05Speaker 3: Do you want to talk about um You followed me
- 40:09Speaker 3: to every school I went to.
- 40:12Speaker 4: Listen, I'm having a great three-year run.
- 40:15Speaker 2: I'm married.
- 40:15Speaker 4: I got two shows on the air. I haven't had
- 40:17Speaker 4: two shows on the air since 2012. People got to
- 40:21Speaker 4: understand this business happens in cycles. Totally 90s house for HGTV.
- 40:25Speaker 3: Love it.
- 40:26Speaker 4: Which just fell out of the sky, to be quite honest.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Flip side, we just did our 520th episode. Yeah. How
- 40:35Speaker 4: did that come about? Flipside was amazing because I was,
- 40:40Speaker 4: so during pandemic, again, man, life got turned upside down, man.
- 40:44Speaker 4: And I started doing more game shows as a celebrity contestant.
- 40:50Speaker 4: And I would do 25 words or less. And again,
- 40:53Speaker 4: I'm strategic and I'm competitive. I was good at the game.
- 40:57Speaker 4: So I knew if anybody got me, a contestant got
- 41:00Speaker 4: me as their celebrity, they had a good chance to
- 41:02Speaker 4: actually win the joint. And I ultimately ended up doing
- 41:06Speaker 4: 82 episodes of that darn show.
- 41:07Speaker 2: I only did six.
- 41:09Speaker 5: Right?
- 41:10Speaker 4: Dang.
- 41:11Speaker 5: Right?
- 41:12Speaker 4: And I had a relationship with the producers where they
- 41:13Speaker 4: were like, hey, anytime you even want to come back,
- 41:16Speaker 4: just let us know. And they had a rate that
- 41:18Speaker 4: they paid. And I remember even hitting my rep and
- 41:20Speaker 4: was like, will they pay more? And he was like, no,
- 41:23Speaker 4: the rate is the rate. So that's when God's challenging you.
- 41:26Speaker 4: But again, I'm like, I'm on airplanes, I'm traveling, and
- 41:30Speaker 4: I'll get flight attendants and stuff. He's like, I love
- 41:31Speaker 4: you on 25 words of last year's. My mom likes
- 41:33Speaker 4: you on that show. You know, you're so good at
- 41:35Speaker 4: the game. I'm always so happy when a contestant gets
- 41:38Speaker 4: you because I know they got a chance. I've had
- 41:40Speaker 4: people tell me that. So that's reinforcement for me that
- 41:43Speaker 4: I'm doing something that other people are appreciating at a
- 41:46Speaker 4: high level. And now I can't think about money. I
- 41:49Speaker 4: got to think about just how this is progressing.
- 41:52Speaker 2: Because the money is going to come.
- 41:53Speaker 3: No, no, no. Because he already has money.
- 41:55Speaker 4: Oh, stop. All right.
- 41:57Speaker 3: Herculo sold 15 million boxes.
- 42:02Speaker 4: So we go. So then I get asked to do Pictionary.
- 42:05Speaker 4: So now I'm on Pictionary How many I think I
- 42:07Speaker 4: probably did About 40 Pictionaries.
- 42:09Speaker 3: I did three Now you see the level Of celebrity
- 42:13Speaker 3: 25 words That's a fun show I think I've watched
- 42:15Speaker 3: it Right It's kind of like Almost like Taboo.
- 42:18Speaker 4: Yeah Really fun show I love the game I still
- 42:21Speaker 4: go back and play Even right now When I have
- 42:23Speaker 4: time I've done like one day On it last year
- 42:25Speaker 4: Even though it was The flip side Yeah So I
- 42:29Speaker 4: keep guessing On these things I was on Anthony Anderson's
- 42:31Speaker 4: Tell the Truth Now every game Showing their mama Is
- 42:33Speaker 4: calling me to be on their game show. The good
- 42:36Speaker 4: news was in the background, I had a friend who
- 42:40Speaker 4: used to work at CBS who really turned the producer
- 42:44Speaker 4: leaf and he was developing the game himself. But in
- 42:47Speaker 4: the process of trying to sell that game, he had
- 42:49Speaker 4: all of this footage of me on game shows and
- 42:52Speaker 4: performing at a high level. So executives, that's why I
- 42:57Speaker 4: always try to make the point where like how people
- 42:59Speaker 4: will see you differently. Executives, they don't allow you to
- 43:02Speaker 4: move the needle like that. Unless, you know, there's a
- 43:07Speaker 4: personal affiliation. You know, if you can show them tape of,
- 43:12Speaker 4: you know, you currently doing something that's, you know, that
- 43:15Speaker 4: fits in the wheelhouse, that's relevant to what it is
- 43:18Speaker 4: they're trying to develop. It's like, oh gosh, this dude's
- 43:20Speaker 4: been on tons of game shows. Everybody knows him.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Great.
- 43:24Speaker 4: I booked the job. And what made our deal, though,
- 43:27Speaker 4: unique was that We are a CBS syndicated show, and
- 43:32Speaker 4: our second window is Game Show Network. So because we
- 43:35Speaker 4: have two platforms to play on, we get a 180-episode
- 43:39Speaker 4: order a year. And that's a heavy lift. It's a
- 43:44Speaker 4: heavy lift, but as a father and a husband, I
- 43:47Speaker 4: love it.
- 43:48Speaker 3: How many do you guys shoot a day?
- 43:49Speaker 4: We do six episodes a day.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Damn!
- 43:51Speaker 4: I love it. I love it.
- 43:53Speaker 2: And it's fun. That's the thing.
- 43:54Speaker 3: It's fun.
- 43:55Speaker 4: It can be a little tiring at times, you know,
- 43:59Speaker 4: because I'm only as good as my contestants. So every
- 44:01Speaker 4: now and then you get some contestants that just, you know,
- 44:04Speaker 4: they kind of suck life out of you. It's a
- 44:06Speaker 4: big energy exchange. But when I get good, when I
- 44:08Speaker 4: get good contestants, when we have a rare day where
- 44:11Speaker 4: we get three winners in one day, you know, the
- 44:14Speaker 4: crew is buzzing. Everybody's happy. I love giving away the money.
- 44:17Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying? I love watching people. But
- 44:20Speaker 4: one of my favorite stories on flip sides, it truly
- 44:22Speaker 4: one of my favorite stories and it just, it solidified
- 44:25Speaker 4: for me. I'm like, man, I'm, I'm where God wants
- 44:27Speaker 4: me to be. Um, I'm where God needs me to be. Um, is, uh,
- 44:33Speaker 4: we got to the fourth round of the show and
- 44:35Speaker 4: I'm not sure how familiar you are with the game show,
- 44:36Speaker 4: but the fourth round is one question, 10 possible answers.
- 44:41Speaker 4: You have to guess the top five answers before getting
- 44:44Speaker 4: three strikes. We send you on with $ 10, 000. You got that?
- 44:48Speaker 4: One question, 10 possible answers, guess the top five. Before
- 44:50Speaker 4: you get three strikes, I'll give you $ 10, 000. So we're
- 44:54Speaker 4: out there, and this dude and his wife, and we're
- 44:59Speaker 4: coming out of break, and his wife starts to cry.
- 45:02Speaker 4: And so I'm like, oh, man, hold on. I can
- 45:05Speaker 4: call makeup for her. And he's like, no, no, she's
- 45:07Speaker 4: going to be fine. She's going to be fine. She
- 45:08Speaker 4: just knows we're about to win the money. And so
- 45:11Speaker 4: he says this and we're coming out of break and
- 45:12Speaker 4: I'm like, you know, okay, keep it together, brother. But,
- 45:14Speaker 4: you know, I can still get her makeup so she
- 45:16Speaker 4: looks right on camera. And makeup came in anyway. And
- 45:19Speaker 4: while makeup came in and touched her up, you know,
- 45:21Speaker 4: he said, no, you don't understand. We're big fans of
- 45:23Speaker 4: yours and we watch this show, you know, constantly. And
- 45:26Speaker 4: I told my wife, you know, we had a tough
- 45:28Speaker 4: year last year. I said, if we ever get on
- 45:29Speaker 4: that show, we're going to win the money. So now
- 45:31Speaker 4: that we're here at the bonus round, I already know
- 45:33Speaker 4: we're going to win the money.
- 45:35Speaker 6: Right.
- 45:35Speaker 4: So I'm like. All right, welcome back to Flipside. Coming
- 45:39Speaker 4: out of break. And the question comes up, and I'll
- 45:42Speaker 4: BS you not. They alternate answers, too. It's not just him.
- 45:46Speaker 4: He has to answer. His wife has to answer. They
- 45:48Speaker 4: went one, two, three, four, five. No strikes. They walked
- 45:53Speaker 4: out of there with $ 10, 000.
- 45:54Speaker 1: Wow.
- 45:54Speaker 4: And he patted me on the butt. He was like,
- 45:56Speaker 4: I told you. I told you. I knew it. There's
- 46:00Speaker 4: certain people, man, and people really have to respect that,
- 46:03Speaker 4: I think, I think there's going to be a spiritual
- 46:05Speaker 4: revolution on this planet, especially as we start having more
- 46:08Speaker 4: AI stuff and, you know, that really begins to affect
- 46:11Speaker 4: humanity for the negative.
- 46:12Speaker 3: And if we win the midterms.
- 46:16Speaker 4: You know, but I really do. I just feel like
- 46:19Speaker 4: I'm kind of really in touch with people who legitimately
- 46:22Speaker 4: can call their shot. I can see them. You know,
- 46:25Speaker 4: I remember even when Kobe came into the league because
- 46:27Speaker 4: I was really good friends with Penny at the time.
- 46:28Speaker 4: And I remember telling Penny, I was like, hey, this
- 46:32Speaker 4: is this was different. He's not just out there competing.
- 46:36Speaker 4: He has his sights set on certain people to take down.
- 46:39Speaker 4: And you are on that list. And Penny kind of
- 46:43Speaker 4: shrugged it off. Not that he wasn't taking him seriously.
- 46:45Speaker 4: I'm not saying that. But I'm just saying he just
- 46:47Speaker 4: shrugged it off that it was coming from me. That
- 46:50Speaker 4: I was telling him that. But it was just like,
- 46:51Speaker 4: I could see it. I watched Kobe play in a
- 46:55Speaker 4: pickup game at UCLA against our 95 championship team. And
- 47:00Speaker 4: he walked in that room like an assassin with a scope.
- 47:03Speaker 4: He didn't talk to nobody. He wouldn't sat in the corner.
- 47:06Speaker 3: So this was Toby.
- 47:07Speaker 4: This was Toby, exactly. He had all of these.
- 47:10Speaker 1: I'm telling you.
- 47:14Speaker 4: No, no, no, for real. And I'm giving you details.
- 47:17Speaker 4: I'm giving you pointed details of things that I noticed.
- 47:19Speaker 4: We were all hooping that day. It was three gyms
- 47:21Speaker 4: up in there, three courts up in there.
- 47:23Speaker 2: And that main court.
- 47:24Speaker 4: And they weren't playing in the far court. And we
- 47:27Speaker 4: saw him setting up. But the action, the intensity started
- 47:31Speaker 4: getting so real, it shut down the games. Because I
- 47:33Speaker 4: was playing on the middle court. And I was like,
- 47:35Speaker 4: are we really going to be girls like this now, dog?
- 47:37Speaker 4: And it was like, yeah, we all would have sat
- 47:38Speaker 4: like Indian style, like children, and just watched them play.
- 47:41Speaker 4: But I remember the way he went out there. Like,
- 47:44Speaker 4: he didn't even care what the teams were. He made
- 47:49Speaker 4: a decision to just go stand next to Toby Bailey.
- 47:52Speaker 4: And it was like, y'all break up these things however
- 47:54Speaker 4: you want. I'm checking him.
- 47:55Speaker 2: You do whatever you want.
- 47:58Speaker 4: And Jelani McCoy was fresh to the team. And Jelani
- 48:02Speaker 4: was a college beast. Jelani used to dunk the ball
- 48:07Speaker 4: with a statement. He was trying to take your manhood
- 48:09Speaker 4: when he dunked the ball. But watching Kobe play that game,
- 48:15Speaker 4: It was the most dominant performance I've ever seen in
- 48:19Speaker 4: any pickup situation. It was so aggressive. His body could
- 48:24Speaker 4: just take flight in certain ways. And Toby wasn't used
- 48:28Speaker 4: to playing with people who could jump like him. Toby
- 48:31Speaker 4: could jump through the gym. Toby was Green Lantern, man.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Toby was doing his thing. Shouts out to Toby. So
- 48:38Speaker 4: for Toby Bailey to meet Kobe Bryant that way, he
- 48:41Speaker 4: was gloving his shit at the top. And then taking
- 48:44Speaker 4: it back and then going the other direction and being like,
- 48:47Speaker 4: you know what? I'm going to just turn around and
- 48:49Speaker 4: reverse dunk in the air just to electrify the room.
- 48:53Speaker 4: But again, not smiling, not cheesing at nobody. I don't
- 48:56Speaker 4: think he ever even came back to play with him
- 48:58Speaker 4: anymore because he was treating.
- 49:00Speaker 3: He made his statement.
- 49:01Speaker 4: Kobe was treating basketball the way Bruce Lee treated fights.
- 49:05Speaker 4: Like Bruce Lee used to travel around the world. I
- 49:07Speaker 4: heard somebody bad is here. I'm here to fight him.
- 49:11Speaker 4: And that's the way he saw basketball. And if you're
- 49:13Speaker 4: trying to be the greatest in the sport, I guess
- 49:16Speaker 4: you got to see it that way. So, you know,
- 49:18Speaker 4: I was a guy that was in between where I'm like,
- 49:20Speaker 4: I was very competitive and I enjoyed playing sports, but
- 49:23Speaker 4: there was also, I love the Magic Johnson smile and
- 49:25Speaker 4: the laughter and the roasting and the bagging and, you know,
- 49:28Speaker 4: and the camaraderie of it all. Nah, man, at the
- 49:30Speaker 4: professional level, it's different. And I'm sure you can identify
- 49:35Speaker 4: with that. That's why I had to share that story.
- 49:37Speaker 4: I knew it was 18 years old. I was like, oh,
- 49:39Speaker 4: this dude's a problem.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Chris, you're setting your sights way too low. You need
- 49:44Speaker 2: to set your sights high.
- 49:46Speaker 3: I need to pick out some comedians I need to attack.
- 49:48Speaker 3: That's what I'm trying to tell you.
- 49:49Speaker 4: You know what was like that?
- 49:50Speaker 3: Cat Williams was like that when he got in town. Okay.
- 49:52Speaker 3: Cat Williams one time did a show and then I heard,
- 49:56Speaker 3: he goes, yeah, now I've taken out Alex Thomas, Chris Spencer,
- 49:59Speaker 3: and somebody else.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I was like, we're on a list? Yes.
- 50:02Speaker 3: And we had a number.
- 50:03Speaker 4: That's 33, 34, and 37 or something like that. That's wild.
- 50:06Speaker 4: And Cat is like, and I can see that out
- 50:08Speaker 4: of Cat.
- 50:09Speaker 2: And I was like, you're thinking about me? Let me
- 50:11Speaker 2: tell you something. I've heard... A lot of Kobe stories.
- 50:15Speaker 4: Comedians are like that, though. They ain't like that.
- 50:18Speaker 1: I ain't going to tell you a lie. I've heard
- 50:19Speaker 1: a lot of Kobe stories. Jaleel, that might have been
- 50:23Speaker 1: the best Kobe story I've ever heard. I ain't going
- 50:26Speaker 1: to tell you a lot about it. I got, bro,
- 50:28Speaker 1: you telling that story, bro, I got chills. Because I've
- 50:31Speaker 1: been in that UCLA gym. I know what those runs
- 50:34Speaker 1: are like. I wasn't in there around that time, but
- 50:37Speaker 1: it's serious in there.
- 50:39Speaker 4: But I would even hear your stories. You know, like T.L.
- 50:41Speaker 4: would pull up on a new team. And he was
- 50:43Speaker 4: just like, Freddie Toby. He was like, T.O. walked right
- 50:46Speaker 4: into the locker room. He was like, who thinks they
- 50:48Speaker 4: the fastest on the team?
- 50:49Speaker 2: Man, you told us this Kobe story, man. So, L.A., football, basketball.
- 50:57Speaker 3: We got baseball, too.
- 51:00Speaker 2: Baseball.
- 51:02Speaker 1: Like, how do you decipher? Do you have, like, a
- 51:04Speaker 1: favorite sport team that you follow?
- 51:08Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 51:11Speaker 1: Because now you've got the Chargers, you've got the Rams, football,
- 51:14Speaker 1: obviously Lakers, Clippers, everybody says Lakers town.
- 51:19Speaker 2: And then you've got USC, UCLA. Don't even say USC.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Edit that out, please.
- 51:26Speaker 3: I mean, how do you— Say Pepperdine.
- 51:29Speaker 4: I mean, listen, I've definitely had to change my stance
- 51:33Speaker 4: a little bit.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Because you, being an athlete.
- 51:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I think I changed my stance a little bit
- 51:36Speaker 4: though because I grew up being a loyalist. Like die
- 51:40Speaker 4: hard to the end. So I'm a Showtime Laker fan
- 51:42Speaker 4: to the end. You talk about Byron Scott, Michael Cooper,
- 51:45Speaker 4: Michael Thompson, Magic Johnson. Like those guys to me are
- 51:49Speaker 4: just on a Mount Rushmore above everything.
- 51:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 51:52Speaker 4: Like the idea of them beating the Celtics and Larry
- 51:56Speaker 4: Bird joining the Lakers the next year would have sent
- 51:59Speaker 4: my body into some type of actual like physical trauma shock.
- 52:03Speaker 5: Me too.
- 52:04Speaker 1: Being that you said that, there's this whole debate on
- 52:08Speaker 1: whether LeBron should get a statue outside of crypto.com. Being
- 52:14Speaker 1: that you said all of that, and there's a lot
- 52:16Speaker 1: of shock value, what do you think about that?
- 52:20Speaker 4: No, he don't get a statue. No?
- 52:21Speaker 2: No.
- 52:22Speaker 3: Not here.
- 52:22Speaker 4: No, not here.
- 52:23Speaker 2: He deserves a statue.
- 52:24Speaker 4: He deserves a statue.
- 52:24Speaker 3: Cleveland?
- 52:25Speaker 4: But Cleveland. Miami, maybe? Cleveland. It's either Cleveland or Miami.
- 52:29Speaker 4: He could actually have both. I think he deserves a
- 52:31Speaker 4: statue outside of Miami and Cleveland, to be honest. But
- 52:34Speaker 4: not Los Angeles. But not Los Angeles. No.
- 52:36Speaker 3: Unless they put it in a bubble.
- 52:38Speaker 4: You are starting trouble.
- 52:42Speaker 2: LeBron, you wouldn't even laugh at that.
- 52:45Speaker 4: I do not need Richie calling me over that.
- 52:47Speaker 1: Oh, my.
- 52:48Speaker 4: Rich Paul, we love you.
- 52:50Speaker 3: It's a joke.
- 52:51Speaker 2: It's a joke. Yo. I think that's the only way
- 52:53Speaker 2: it would be acceptable. Yo.
- 52:56Speaker 4: If LeBron's statue was in a bubble.
- 52:59Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 53:00Speaker 2: Hey, that might be your best one yet.
- 53:03Speaker 4: Hey, but you know what? That's elite level comedy.
- 53:05Speaker 2: I know.
- 53:06Speaker 3: That's elite level comedy.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Bro, that may be your best one yet.
- 53:10Speaker 1: Man and I handpicked you that's right this dude right
- 53:15Speaker 1: now that's crazy so loyalists Lakers so that's your thing you.
- 53:19Speaker 4: Know I love the Lakers and the Showtime Lakers specifically
- 53:23Speaker 4: the Kobe and Shaq Lakers I came to appreciate you
- 53:25Speaker 4: can you just can't hate on what they were right
- 53:28Speaker 4: that's one of the situations also too where you kind
- 53:30Speaker 4: of wish they had gotten along better but at the
- 53:31Speaker 4: same time it was like what they did was it
- 53:33Speaker 4: cemented it's amazing but I have changed man like These players,
- 53:39Speaker 4: but you see the way Kawhi Leonard done imploded the Clippers?
- 53:43Speaker 4: People behind the scenes, we done known about Uncle Dennis
- 53:44Speaker 4: for a long time. People behind the scenes have known
- 53:48Speaker 4: him for a long time. My man was wilding, right?
- 53:51Speaker 4: So the lack of loyalty on both sides, quite frankly,
- 53:55Speaker 4: because I can't speak about athlete loyalty towards an organization
- 54:00Speaker 4: without bringing up the fact that these organizations have no
- 54:02Speaker 4: loyalty to athletes, all right? That has completely broken down.
- 54:07Speaker 4: It's every man for themselves and a bottom line concern.
- 54:12Speaker 4: It's year to year for me. Year to year. Now
- 54:17Speaker 4: I just accept it. There was a couple years in
- 54:19Speaker 4: there where the Golden State Warriors could do no wrong.
- 54:22Speaker 4: I love Steph Curry. He's a generational phenomenon. I love
- 54:29Speaker 4: the way he lives his life. I love his family.
- 54:31Speaker 4: Everything about the dude's branding is just off the charts.
- 54:34Speaker 4: And now we've got some new jacks. I'm seeing the
- 54:38Speaker 4: San Antonio Spurs coming, right? And in the weirdest way,
- 54:41Speaker 4: I'm like, I'm actually happy they lost. Because I wanted
- 54:44Speaker 4: to see New York get it. I love Jalen. I
- 54:47Speaker 4: love the storyline that Dallas didn't believe in him enough.
- 54:52Speaker 4: Made it all about him and his dad. Shout out
- 54:54Speaker 4: to Rick. Jalen Brunson is a generational point guard, man,
- 54:59Speaker 4: and he's got a lot more to show us. I
- 55:00Speaker 4: don't even think he's done. I'm going to say it
- 55:02Speaker 4: right now, too. Today, I don't think the Sixers are
- 55:05Speaker 4: the best team in the East yet.
- 55:07Speaker 3: No, just because they got LeBron.
- 55:09Speaker 1: No, I'm in total agreement with you on that.
- 55:12Speaker 4: Hey, prove it to me. It looks great on paper,
- 55:15Speaker 4: but prove it to me. Beautiful poster.
- 55:17Speaker 2: Beautiful poster. Maybe 10 years ago, he could move that needle.
- 55:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 55:21Speaker 2: But he's not the LeBron of 10 years ago.
- 55:24Speaker 4: And listen, the Sixers are going to be so fun
- 55:26Speaker 4: to watch. I can't wait to watch the civil rights
- 55:28Speaker 4: game on Christmas Day where they play against the Lakers.
- 55:30Speaker 4: It's going to be beautiful. It's going to be amazing.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Is it here?
- 55:35Speaker 3: Is the game here?
- 55:36Speaker 4: The game is here. The game is here. So you
- 55:39Speaker 4: got the L.A. Quakers and the Sixers going at it.
- 55:41Speaker 3: He said the L.A.
- 55:42Speaker 4: Quakers and the Sixers going at it. Wow. It's going
- 55:48Speaker 4: to be on the chart.
- 55:50Speaker 2: It's snow time.
- 55:51Speaker 4: It's snow time.
- 55:52Speaker 2: Snow time.
- 55:53Speaker 3: It's snow time. Or slow time.
- 55:56Speaker 4: Listen, because we Hoopers, and I say this with American love,
- 55:59Speaker 4: because we Hoopers, we know when five white boys got
- 56:03Speaker 4: on the court and just happened to play against five
- 56:05Speaker 4: black guys, man they gonna lace them up.
- 56:09Speaker 5: Yeah they gonna down screen back screen you to death
- 56:12Speaker 5: pick and pop I mean running UCLA cuts all types
- 56:20Speaker 5: of stuff but don't forget we all play ball.
- 56:23Speaker 2: And we've all been beaten by five white boys before
- 56:25Speaker 2: hey listen I.
- 56:25Speaker 4: Used to have dude man shout out to Danny Farmer
- 56:27Speaker 4: my favorite white guy from UCLA that I ever played
- 56:30Speaker 4: with he was a two sport athlete I would love
- 56:33Speaker 4: it when I was playing pick up ball at UCLA
- 56:35Speaker 4: and the volleyball players would come in, and Danny was
- 56:37Speaker 4: on our volleyball team, because you had six, four white
- 56:40Speaker 4: dudes who would jump out of the gym, grab every rebound,
- 56:45Speaker 4: set screens, and pass the ball. I would leave games
- 56:48Speaker 4: I was in. Who wants to take my spot? When
- 56:50Speaker 4: they came walking in, because I knew with me being
- 56:53Speaker 4: point guard at that, oh, I'm about to run three,
- 56:55Speaker 4: four games, get a body, and go in and out.
- 56:57Speaker 2: But I guess it's different at the next level, right?
- 56:59Speaker 3: Are you guys both saying that five white guys can't
- 57:01Speaker 3: win an NBA championship?
- 57:03Speaker 4: I'm saying I would like to see them try.
- 57:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 57:05Speaker 4: I'm actually saying I would like to see them try.
- 57:07Speaker 2: That's not happening.
- 57:08Speaker 4: I think it's good entertainment.
- 57:09Speaker 2: That's not happening.
- 57:10Speaker 3: Why is it not happening?
- 57:11Speaker 2: It's just not.
- 57:13Speaker 4: I'm going to tell you this. I'm going to put
- 57:15Speaker 4: myself out there. I think the experiment is going to
- 57:18Speaker 4: work better than people realize.
- 57:21Speaker 5: Really?
- 57:21Speaker 2: Really.
- 57:22Speaker 4: Because of what I'm talking about here.
- 57:25Speaker 2: If Luka can remain healthy.
- 57:27Speaker 4: If Luka can remain healthy. And in shape. My issue
- 57:30Speaker 4: with Luka, especially though, is that he just don't play
- 57:32Speaker 4: no defense and has no desire to.
- 57:33Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 57:34Speaker 4: I just feel like when it comes to a true
- 57:37Speaker 4: championship mentality, you have to get to a point where
- 57:40Speaker 4: it's like, I'm stopping somebody. I remember in my mid-20s,
- 57:44Speaker 4: I got to the point where I was like, I
- 57:46Speaker 4: wanted to play defense. Like, I wanted to shut somebody down.
- 57:50Speaker 4: And it got out of control, too. Like, I had
- 57:52Speaker 4: to apologize to Nick Cannon and Kevin Hart over some
- 57:54Speaker 4: stuff because I was just like, I'm like, I didn't
- 57:55Speaker 4: even want him to cross half court. But that's the
- 57:59Speaker 4: championship mentality that it takes when you're starting to click
- 58:02Speaker 4: and you're getting to that point. That's that Kobe shit.
- 58:05Speaker 2: I was just about to say.
- 58:05Speaker 4: I'm going to do what it takes to win.
- 58:07Speaker 2: He has to have somebody on that team to hold
- 58:09Speaker 2: him accountable.
- 58:10Speaker 3: Yes.
- 58:11Speaker 2: I don't even, J.J. Redick is not the guy.
- 58:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:14Speaker 2: Because you see, he's just going against J.J. Redick already. Like,
- 58:21Speaker 2: they've already had their little tiffs.
- 58:22Speaker 4: Really? Yeah.
- 58:23Speaker 2: There we go.
- 58:24Speaker 4: Yeah, they've already had their little tiffs. Luka's going to
- 58:26Speaker 4: be a hard guy to coach because of this defensive
- 58:29Speaker 4: thing as well. You know, he can basically get a
- 58:31Speaker 4: bucket whenever he wants. But you can't trade buckets to
- 58:34Speaker 4: a championship. You've got to stop somebody. Some of Jordan's
- 58:37Speaker 4: greatest moments are defensive. Stealing the ball from Karl Malone,
- 58:40Speaker 4: you know. Speaking of.
- 58:43Speaker 2: What is your best memory at a sporting event? You
- 58:46Speaker 2: just mentioned it.
- 58:48Speaker 3: I've been to a lot.
- 58:49Speaker 4: I've been to a lot of sporting events. I was
- 58:50Speaker 4: there when Chris Webber called the timeout. I was in
- 58:52Speaker 4: New Orleans as a kid sitting next to Jim Boeheim,
- 58:57Speaker 4: sitting next to Lute Olsen. Man, he rest in peace.
- 58:59Speaker 4: I was really good friends with Lute Olsen and Bobby Olsen.
- 59:01Speaker 5: Oh, man.
- 59:02Speaker 4: And I went to UCLA. So ironically, I had a
- 59:04Speaker 4: better relationship with Arizona basketball than I had with UCLA basketball.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Wow.
- 59:09Speaker 4: I was I was at, what is it?
- 59:13Speaker 1: So I'm not, that question is not giving me any justice.
- 59:18Speaker 1: Can it do any justice for you to pick out one?
- 59:20Speaker 4: I mean, just one is tough. Ironically, too, I think
- 59:27Speaker 4: some of your greatest memories are when You didn't have money.
- 59:30Speaker 4: You were new to it. You know, like going to
- 59:33Speaker 4: the garden.
- 59:33Speaker 2: And watching- When did you ever not have money?
- 59:35Speaker 4: Stop it, man.
- 59:36Speaker 3: Stop it, man.
- 59:37Speaker 4: Right. No, I'm saying- You see my face? No.
- 59:39Speaker 3: I'm like- No, because I'm.
- 59:40Speaker 4: Telling you, first of all, like my mom and dad,
- 59:41Speaker 4: I'm telling you, they didn't let money dominate our discussion.
- 59:47Speaker 4: Change our perspective. You know- I have a very specific
- 59:49Speaker 4: story about bottle popping that was really me starting to
- 59:53Speaker 4: get introduced to money. And that's a separate story where
- 59:55Speaker 4: I was like, I bottle popped across from Mariah Carey
- 59:58Speaker 4: one night at Light in New York. And Disco, remember Disco? Sure.
- 1:00:04Speaker 4: He was the bouncer out front. I didn't know what
- 1:00:06Speaker 4: the hell I was doing. And I remember he said, oh,
- 1:00:10Speaker 4: they got us a table. And we were right across
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: from the brat and Mariah Carey. And so the bottle
- 1:00:16Speaker 4: service girl came over. And was like, you know, what
- 1:00:18Speaker 4: do you want to order? And I had a friend
- 1:00:19Speaker 4: of mine that, I could choke this dude. He worked
- 1:00:23Speaker 4: at a record company, so he knew exactly what the
- 1:00:24Speaker 4: hell he was leading me into. And he was like, yo,
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: you don't drink anything less than Cristal, because you Jaleel White.
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: And I'm like, all right, then just give us a
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: bottle of Cristal. All right, cool. And he's like, well,
- 1:00:34Speaker 4: do you want anything, any mixers? So I was confused,
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: kind of, to be quite honest, with what I was
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: even ordering. But I knew that my mom and dad
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: had mimosas every time we went to Ritz-Carlton for brunch.
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: I better sound smart.
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: So I had them bring me some orange juice. So
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: I'm sitting there across from Mariah Carey and the Brat
- 1:00:53Speaker 4: mixing Cristal and orange juice. And I'm like, okay, I
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: guess this is cool. And then all of a sudden
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: we had a table full of girls. Gang of girls,
- 1:01:00Speaker 4: gang of Puerto Rican chicks. Life is good this night.
- 1:01:03Speaker 4: And my man just keeps wiggling at me the bottle
- 1:01:07Speaker 4: when it's empty. And so we went through about three bottles.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: I was like, all right, cool.
- 1:01:10Speaker 5: We left.
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: And the bill was this way. Everyone's going to laugh
- 1:01:13Speaker 4: at this. The bill was $ 900. It sounds like nothing now, right?
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: The bill was at the time, you're talking about you.
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: I was 21 at the time. You're talking about 20
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: something years ago. The bill was $ 900. I looked at
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: the bill and I was like, I didn't want to
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: ask her about the bill because I clearly knew we
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: had done this. But instead I hit her with, is
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: your tip included in this? And she's like, no, it's not.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: Got it. So I gave her $ 1, 100, got up out
- 1:01:39Speaker 4: of there. I was the only one in my car.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: Everybody had left. I'm riding back to my hotel by myself, right?
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: No Puerto Rican's?
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: Didn't close, no deals. Didn't close, no deals, right? And
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: I'm just feeling horrible. I'm just going home. So I
- 1:01:54Speaker 4: called home. And like I said, I'm like, I'm 21.
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: I called home and I called my dad. My dad
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: answered the phone. And I was like, Dad, it's going
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: to be $ 1, 100 on the Amex this month. I just
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: wanted to let you know before it even happens. And
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: my dad was like, okay, son. I was like, it's cool.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: He was like, drop in the bucket, son.
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: You're fine. You're fine.
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: You having fun out there?
- 1:02:13Speaker 3: You being safe?
- 1:02:14Speaker 4: Cool.
- 1:02:14Speaker 2: All right, great.
- 1:02:16Speaker 4: Hang up the phone with him. I'm still not feeling
- 1:02:18Speaker 4: good about that because I've never spent $ 1, 100 like that
- 1:02:21Speaker 4: just in a whop. And I got no girls or
- 1:02:23Speaker 4: anything to show for it. No Puerto Ricans. No, the
- 1:02:28Speaker 4: whole Puerto Ricans are gone. The parade is over. So
- 1:02:33Speaker 4: literally like 30 seconds after I hung up with my dad,
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: my mom calls back. Hey. Your daddy told me what
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: you did. Don't let that shit happen again while you're
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: out there. So in the weirdest way, it was like psychologically,
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: I was asking my mom to reprimand me. I was
- 1:02:49Speaker 4: giving her permission to reprimand me. So that's where I
- 1:02:52Speaker 4: always stood when it came to dealing with money. So
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: going back to answer your question, though, about sporting events,
- 1:02:58Speaker 4: et cetera, I'm like, I was given tickets by Bruce
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: Smith to see– the bills play the, the Dallas Cowboys,
- 1:03:07Speaker 4: the year Michael Jackson performed at the Rose Bowl.
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: And I didn't even think that I could go to
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: the Superbowl, but I had sent Bruce Smith a, a,
- 1:03:16Speaker 4: an Urkel doll and with the hopes that he would
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: send me back his Jersey. And he and Thurman Thomas
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: sent me back their signed jerseys. So when they came
- 1:03:23Speaker 4: and they stayed downtown LA, they were nice enough to
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: be like, they had, um, I think I still remember
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: that guy's name. Um, I won't try it, though. But
- 1:03:32Speaker 4: I remember the publicity person for the Bills' name invited
- 1:03:38Speaker 4: me down to the team hotel to meet the team
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: the night before the game. And he was like, yo, so,
- 1:03:42Speaker 4: you know, you coming to the game tomorrow? And I
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: was just like, my dad and I are like, no, man,
- 1:03:45Speaker 4: we just came down here to meet you. And he
- 1:03:47Speaker 4: was like, what? Set him up with some tickets. And
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: it was just like that. Just set us up with
- 1:03:51Speaker 4: two tickets and, you know, the 40-yard line. And, of course,
- 1:03:55Speaker 4: the Bills lost horribly that game, right? It was like
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: 52 to like 10 or something like that. But, you know,
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: my dad and I, we keep those tickets to this day.
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: My dad keeps one ticket. I keep the other ticket.
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: You know, you see the price on there. I think
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: the ticket said $ 400.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: Shout out to Bruce Smith. Bruce Smith. Fellow Hall of Famer.
- 1:04:14Speaker 4: Man, Bruce Smith, he was such a class act for that.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: So that's what I mean when I'm saying not having
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: any money. Here I am going to meet Bruce Smith.
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: And I'm thinking this is the highlight of my weekend.
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: I'm not even in my mind conceptualizing. I'm famous enough
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: to ask somebody to help me go to this game,
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: let alone for free.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:04:32Speaker 3: You mentioned something earlier, which basically showed us the difference
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: between your mom and your dad.
- 1:04:38Speaker 2: Which one are you closer.
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: To as a parent?
- 1:04:41Speaker 4: At this point, you know... Not.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: Closer to as a parent, but how do you parent?
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: Oh, how do I parent? I'm definitely right down the middle.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: I'm right down the middle. Because I go out of
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: my way to make sure that there are ways where
- 1:04:51Speaker 4: I'm not like my mom. And that's not an insult
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: to her. It's just she understands that she did a
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: lot of heavy-handed stuff that she didn't need to.
- 1:04:59Speaker 3: Do with me.
- 1:05:00Speaker 4: She didn't. My dad had a better... um, he had
- 1:05:04Speaker 4: a better bead on appealing to my logic. Like, you know,
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: my mom would just be like, my mom was because
- 1:05:09Speaker 4: I said so. So like, I always had a curfew, right?
- 1:05:12Speaker 4: And I don't even understand parents today who just don't,
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: their kids don't have curfews. It boggles the mind, right? And, um,
- 1:05:19Speaker 4: So when I got to about my senior year in
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: high school, and now I'm going into college, that's all
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: happening in one year.
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: By the way, he went to my old high school
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: and my old college.
- 1:05:27Speaker 4: That's wild, right?
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: South Pasadena Tigers, UCLA.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: That's wild that we have that in common.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: And our kids went to the same junior high school
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: and high school.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: That's why.
- 1:05:37Speaker 2: So safe to say he's trying to be like Chris.
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: Everybody's trying to be like Chris.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Everybody's trying to be like Chris.
- 1:05:42Speaker 4: You know how brothers say, I'm trying to get like you.
- 1:05:43Speaker 4: I'm trying to get like.
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: You, playboy.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: I'm trying to get like you, playboy. But you forget
- 1:05:50Speaker 4: what I'm saying because you're so funny.
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: You're down the middle.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: Your dad.
- 1:05:53Speaker 4: I'm down the middle. So my dad would tell me
- 1:05:56Speaker 4: when I got to my senior year, my curfew was
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: still midnight. And I'm like, you know. Dad, you know,
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: how come I can't get a one o'clock curfew? Because
- 1:06:04Speaker 4: what was happening was I wanted to go to a
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: 10 o'clock movie or 10, 15 movie with a girl
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: or with some peoples. And now I'm looking at the
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: clock because there's no Uber back then. I have to
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: race home from wherever I am and drive unsafely, you know,
- 1:06:15Speaker 4: because your parents are waiting at the door back then.
- 1:06:19Speaker 4: My daughter is different now. My daughter has Uber. My
- 1:06:21Speaker 4: daughter can text me. You know, we have a different
- 1:06:23Speaker 4: rapport where I'm just kind of like, I just need
- 1:06:25Speaker 4: to know where you are. And what my dad understood
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: was he said, OK, son, where what are you not
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: able to do? past the hour of 12 o'clock that
- 1:06:34Speaker 4: I can help you with. That you can't do in
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: between 10 and 12. So he's trying to have this
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: logical conversation. My mama's sitting in the background like, just huffing, like,
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: we said so, and that should just be the end
- 1:06:45Speaker 4: of it. And I'm like, Dad, you know, I want
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: to go to a 10 o'clock movie. Like, that's ridiculous.
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: I can't go to a 10 o'clock movie. He's like, okay.
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: So you go to a 10 o'clock movie, but do
- 1:06:52Speaker 4: you understand, you and your mother and I, we're not
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: getting any rest until you get home safely. And it
- 1:06:59Speaker 4: was like, oh, I never really thought about that. He
- 1:07:00Speaker 4: was like, do you think that we just sleep in here?
- 1:07:02Speaker 4: We're just snoring while you out at one, two o'clock
- 1:07:04Speaker 4: in the morning and you just started driving. But, you know,
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: but so long ago. So it was like, OK. So
- 1:07:10Speaker 4: once he gave me that, he said, OK, now where
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: do you want to go? Well, you know, what if
- 1:07:13Speaker 4: I want to go to somebody's house and we want
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: to like, you know, order a pizza or something like that? OK, well,
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: all right. Well, if you go to somebody's house, can
- 1:07:20Speaker 4: you are their parents going to be there?
- 1:07:22Speaker 2: Can you?
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: Can you can you call us from that house? Bottom line,
- 1:07:25Speaker 4: he gave me a lot of parameters and check downs
- 1:07:29Speaker 4: of things to do after 12 o'clock. And suddenly my
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: my curfew really became one one thirty in the morning.
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: And really what you don't realize when you that age
- 1:07:37Speaker 4: is ain't no place for you to be.
- 1:07:40Speaker 2: Past 1 o'clock in the morning.
- 1:07:41Speaker 4: Especially in L.A. You know, you ain't going to the club.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: And if you are going to the club, it's going
- 1:07:46Speaker 4: to end at 2 o'clock. Okay? Only thing open, and
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: people are going to be mad at me for saying this,
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: only thing open after 2 o'clock in the morning is
- 1:07:51Speaker 4: some legs.
- 1:07:52Speaker 2: Gas station and legs.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: Gas station and legs.
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: I like that. Gas station and legs. Gas station and
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: some legs.
- 1:07:59Speaker 2: Gas station and legs, boy.
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: I love that.
- 1:08:10Speaker 4: Once we started getting on the same logical train, I
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: was able to actually understand what his concerns were. So
- 1:08:15Speaker 4: now as a parent, I think that way when I'm
- 1:08:18Speaker 4: dealing with my daughter. And the other thing I try
- 1:08:20Speaker 4: not to do is I try not to parent my
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: daughter from the perspective of boys can do this and
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: girls can do that. That's dead. That's not right. She's
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: a responsible kid. She's got an awesome track record. She
- 1:08:32Speaker 4: only has one particular night that was just like, it drove.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: Me to tears.
- 1:08:38Speaker 4: But she fixed it quick. She just came in. And
- 1:08:42Speaker 4: I'm not even going to say. She came in. And
- 1:08:45Speaker 4: thank God, my wife.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: Took care of it.
- 1:08:47Speaker 4: My wife was just like, upstairs. I didn't want to
- 1:08:49Speaker 4: look at her.
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: We've all been there, brother.
- 1:08:53Speaker 4: I thank my wife so much because she just, well,
- 1:08:56Speaker 4: my wife had done all that stuff. So when she
- 1:08:58Speaker 4: came in that way, my wife literally just was like,
- 1:09:01Speaker 4: it was on autopilot.
- 1:09:02Speaker 2: She was like, I got this.
- 1:09:04Speaker 4: I got this. You go upstairs, and even the next morning,
- 1:09:07Speaker 4: I didn't even have a conversation with her. At breakfast,
- 1:09:09Speaker 4: she was like, you can't come in like that. Like,
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: you know, we're actually not even mad that you got
- 1:09:14Speaker 4: like that. But the idea that you think you can
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: come in here like that? Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: That's disrespectful.
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: Wow.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: Okay.
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: Man, we have a segment called Four Downs.
- 1:09:28Speaker 4: Four Downs.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Four Downs.
- 1:09:29Speaker 4: What do I got four downs to do?
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: Take us home. Clothes us out.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You can come in however
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: you want. Four Downs to get to the end zone.
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: Jaleel White.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: What are we doing?
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: First down, most underrated actor you've ever worked with.
- 1:09:49Speaker 3: Darius McCreary.
- 1:09:51Speaker 5: Hilarious.
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: What up, D?
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: Most underrated actor.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: First of all, let me, this is your question.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: I don't know. No, Darius paid me to shout him out.
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: That I've ever worked with.
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: You said never or you have worked with? Ever, yeah.
- 1:10:07Speaker 2: Most underrated actor, yeah, you've ever worked with.
- 1:10:10Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: Clifton Powell. Ooh, shout out to Clifton Powell. Clifton.
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: Clifton Powell's a bad boy.
- 1:10:16Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 1:10:17Speaker 4: That's a prime example when people ask me about typecasting questions.
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: Clifton Powell has been typecast as the bad guy. And
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: this is a dude with an incredible range who can
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: play anything. memorized, dense monologue. And, you know, I like
- 1:10:39Speaker 4: to give flowers to cats like that. Because if you
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: just go check his IMDB, you'll really realize just how
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: many productions that he's contributed to.
- 1:10:49Speaker 3: No, I told him, I said, you're the only person
- 1:10:51Speaker 3: that's played Martin Luther King and Rodney King.
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: Come on, man. Come on, man.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: My first job in Hollywood. Wow.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: The Winans video, go check this out.
- 1:11:00Speaker 3: It's time to make a change.
- 1:11:01Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah, that's a great question, T.L., because, again, I'm
- 1:11:04Speaker 4: sure you even know, there's superstar athletes and then there's
- 1:11:07Speaker 4: dudes out there that just didn't get enough time on
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: the field.
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Yeah, Freddie would be one of those guys.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Freddie would definitely put himself in that category.
- 1:11:14Speaker 4: He would put himself in the category.
- 1:11:16Speaker 3: All right, second down.
- 1:11:18Speaker 2: Hey, you didn't score, but, I mean, you almost got
- 1:11:21Speaker 2: in there. Second down, what's a role you would love
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: to play?
- 1:11:27Speaker 4: I'd love to see a bad guy that you didn't
- 1:11:30Speaker 4: see coming at you. Nothing cliche. Just like when the
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: turn happens, it's like Chicken Man from Breaking Bad.
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:11:38Speaker 4: You know, the level that Giancarlo Esposito found with that
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: character is iconic. It was a very un-cliche role. See,
- 1:11:46Speaker 4: that's what people don't understand. It was an un-cliche role
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: for a black man. And so that's why the role
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: is so iconic, because normally that role only go on
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: to a white guy. But for a black man to
- 1:11:58Speaker 4: be the owner of all these chicken joints and have
- 1:12:02Speaker 4: this sinister side personality, we rarely get those opportunities to
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: play a role that's that multidimensional.
- 1:12:12Speaker 1: Man, third, I mean, this question was already asked. written
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: it was already written on here but you may have
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: already answered it what it is with the buffalo bills
- 1:12:20Speaker 1: tickets but the question is if you could have any
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: piece of sports memorabilia what would it be.
- 1:12:27Speaker 4: Oh um i mean it's an easy question but the
- 1:12:33Speaker 4: problem is i wouldn't want it because it means somebody
- 1:12:35Speaker 4: else had to give it up for a bad life
- 1:12:37Speaker 4: reason that's a super bowl right I feel bad when
- 1:12:41Speaker 4: I see Super Bowl rings get on the market because
- 1:12:42Speaker 4: I know typically that means the guys probably hit hard times.
- 1:12:45Speaker 3: But what if you were with the Rams organization and
- 1:12:50Speaker 3: you're down in the field and you're like, Jillian, we're
- 1:12:52Speaker 3: going to get you a ring.
- 1:12:53Speaker 4: Well, it would have to be the Chargers. I'm very biased.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: Chargers?
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: Yeah. What?
- 1:12:59Speaker 4: Have you even been to San Diego? We just got
- 1:13:02Speaker 4: here Thursday. Chargers? I love it. I take it on
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: the chair, but I'm loyal to my wife. Chargers? Is
- 1:13:08Speaker 4: she from down there?
- 1:13:09Speaker 3: She's affiliated with the Chargers.
- 1:13:12Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: Is her maiden name Fouts?
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: Chargers?
- 1:13:16Speaker 3: What? Bro, I didn't even expect that. I did not
- 1:13:19Speaker 3: see that.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you're not going to see it.
- 1:13:22Speaker 4: You just lost yards. It's fourth and 12.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: I'll take it. You just lost yards.
- 1:13:27Speaker 4: I'll take another chance. I'll take another chance.
- 1:13:30Speaker 2: Yeah, you went from third and short to now it's
- 1:13:32Speaker 2: fourth and long.
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: Fourth and long.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: All right, fourth and long. We know what Freddie did
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: with fourth and long.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: Fourth and 26.
- 1:13:38Speaker 3: Fourth and 26, let's go.
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: Fourth down.
- 1:13:40Speaker 2: If you could do a scene with any actor or actress,
- 1:13:44Speaker 2: who would it be?
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: What year is it?
- 1:13:47Speaker 2: It's on you. What year is it?
- 1:13:49Speaker 4: Chris, you understand what I'm saying. What year is it?
- 1:13:51Speaker 4: Are we talking about present day? Are we talking about 1995, 1996, 2000?
- 1:13:54Speaker 4: What year is it?
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: 90s.
- 1:13:55Speaker 3: Okay, yeah.
- 1:13:56Speaker 4: I was going to say 90s.
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: Yeah, 90s. Oh, man.
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: That's easy. Janet Jackson.
- 1:14:07Speaker 2: Janet Jackson.
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: I'm getting cast in Poetic Justice.
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: That's Joe Torre or Tupac?
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: Joe Torre is out.
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: Joe Torre is out.
- 1:14:14Speaker 4: Joe Torre, you're going to be doing this? I want
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: to be in the fight scene with Joe and Tupac.
- 1:14:19Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:14:20Speaker 4: Brushing my hair. Sorry, Joe, you out.
- 1:14:22Speaker 2: You out.
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: I got to brush now.
- 1:14:24Speaker 3: Janet, huh?
- 1:14:25Speaker 2: Was Janet always your crush?
- 1:14:28Speaker 4: Janet was my childhood crush in a major way. I
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: had a great moment with Janet. They sat me next
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: to her at the Starlight Foundation.
- 1:14:36Speaker 5: And....
- 1:14:38Speaker 4: And I was at a table with, shoot, man, Heather Locklear,
- 1:14:41Speaker 4: Tommy Lee Jones, Magic was right over here. And they
- 1:14:45Speaker 4: intentionally sat me next to Janet. And I remember they
- 1:14:48Speaker 4: brought us our food and, you know, chicken dinner spot.
- 1:14:51Speaker 4: And she wouldn't touch her plate. And I was like, well,
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: it's like, you're not eating your food. And she's like, no,
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: I don't eat animals. I was like, ah, neither do I.
- 1:14:59Speaker 2: Ah, we have something in common.
- 1:15:01Speaker 3: What are you doing tomorrow night?
- 1:15:04Speaker 2: I can now stay out till 1.30.
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: I didn't touch my freaking food. I waited until we
- 1:15:08Speaker 4: went to McDonald's on.
- 1:15:09Speaker 3: The way home. One of the greatest jokes ever, Chris
- 1:15:12Speaker 3: Rock said, when Janet was with Jermaine Dupri. He said
- 1:15:17Speaker 3: when he found out, that meant he could have had
- 1:15:20Speaker 3: a chance.
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: We all reacted the same way.
- 1:15:22Speaker 3: He said that's like looking in the paper and reading,
- 1:15:25Speaker 3: big sale yesterday.
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: That's a good joke.
- 1:15:30Speaker 2: Chris Rock's a genius.
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: That's a good joke. Trust me, we all felt the
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: same way when Jermaine got with her.
- 1:15:36Speaker 2: We were just like, wait a minute.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: And then you started understanding Jermaine and seeing how smooth
- 1:15:39Speaker 3: he is. And you're like, okay, that's what it is.
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: Yeah, he got to that mental side.
- 1:15:45Speaker 2: Well, man, Jalil, thank you for coming, man. Thank you. Man,
- 1:15:49Speaker 2: you brought some stories today, bro. Yes, you did. You
- 1:15:52Speaker 2: brought some heat.
- 1:15:53Speaker 4: I appreciate it, man.
- 1:15:54Speaker 3: Come on, man.
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: As long as I've known you guys, man, this is fun.
- 1:15:57Speaker 4: This is conversational. Go ahead, chop it up how you
- 1:15:59Speaker 4: need to. I will say this, though. The offer stands.
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: I'm here to offer you a rematch. If you can
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: find a room big enough to accommodate the ping pong table.
- 1:16:06Speaker 3: Who's the best ping pong celebrity you've played with?
- 1:16:08Speaker 5: Ooh.
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: Because I can tell you two nice ones. Have you
- 1:16:12Speaker 2: played with Chris Paul?
- 1:16:15Speaker 4: No, I would love to play against Chris Paul.
- 1:16:16Speaker 3: And then Jamie Foxx.
- 1:16:17Speaker 4: Can you put me on with Chris Paul right now?
- 1:16:19Speaker 3: Absolutely.
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: Put me on with Chris Paul right now. Jamie, nice.
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: Jamie's really good. Jamie has terrific defense. And he's, again,
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: Jamie is a strategic Sagittarian as well. So he's going
- 1:16:32Speaker 4: to play you in a way. to wait for you
- 1:16:35Speaker 4: to make the mistake.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's how you got to play. That's how
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: you Sagittarius.
- 1:16:40Speaker 3: My daughters are Sagittarius. That's how she thinks.
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: Tell us what you got going on, what you're building,
- 1:16:46Speaker 1: and tell the people where they can find you.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: Hey, man, listen. People can check me out on Flipside.

- 1:17:13Speaker 4: the HGTV fans are second only to Marvel fans like
- 1:17:16Speaker 4: the people who watch that network are watching rabidly that's
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: my favorite channel that's my wife's favorite channel I love
- 1:17:21Speaker 4: it I love hosting the show it's a fun network
- 1:17:25Speaker 4: to work for So those are my two main projects
- 1:17:27Speaker 4: right now. I'm always going to have a little perp
- 1:17:30Speaker 4: on me for anybody who needs that.
- 1:17:31Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 1:17:32Speaker 3: Tell people about that.
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: You know, a little purple urkel. What's that?
- 1:17:35Speaker 2: What's going on?
- 1:17:36Speaker 3: Urkel is a drug dealer.
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: I am not. First of all, it's Jalil, okay? No,
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: I'm talking about this. No, but I have to say that.
- 1:17:46Speaker 4: I have to make the distinction.
- 1:17:47Speaker 2: I'm sorry, yes.
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: Purple urkel is a strain that was introduced to the
- 1:17:53Speaker 4: cannabis community in the early 2000s. And I had nothing
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: to do with it. But to understand the cannabis community
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: a little bit better, and I needed to do the
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: deep dive and understand, it's like the wine community. An
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: OG or gelatos, whatever, those are like varietals of wine.
- 1:18:09Speaker 4: Cab or Pinot Noir. So this is a varietal. A
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: strain is a varietal. And Purple Urkel is probably one
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: of the most well-known strains throughout the industry. So I
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: started doing my due diligence, and I was like, you
- 1:18:21Speaker 4: know what? I'll be damned if that's made, and I'm
- 1:18:23Speaker 4: going to make the best of it. So I'd literally
- 1:18:24Speaker 4: make the best of it.
- 1:18:26Speaker 2: Let me tell you why I know it's good. Purple Urkel.
- 1:18:27Speaker 3: We were out with our friend, a mutual friend in
- 1:18:30Speaker 3: Yellow Springs.
- 1:18:31Speaker 2: This got THC in it?
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: That's drugs. Oh, I don't need this.
- 1:18:36Speaker 3: That's the real shit.
- 1:18:37Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, I don't need this.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: We were out with our friends, and everybody was talking about,
- 1:18:42Speaker 3: you know, what they was going to smoke.
- 1:18:43Speaker 2: And it was like, no, we need that purple.
- 1:18:45Speaker 4: Go ahead and take that so he understands, though. He'll learn.
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: He'll learn.
- 1:18:49Speaker 2: Purple Urkel.
- 1:18:50Speaker 4: Listen, now let me tell you something. I'm a dude
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: who grew up not drinking in college.
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: No, with your mom and your daddy, I'm already, no,
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: you ain't got to tell me that.
- 1:19:00Speaker 4: I didn't have a sip of liquor throughout my entire
- 1:19:03Speaker 4: college experience. Me either.
- 1:19:05Speaker 2: I didn't until I got to college. That was the
- 1:19:07Speaker 2: first time I had like a Coke 45, a beer. Right? Yeah.
- 1:19:12Speaker 4: And the first time I smoked anything, I was 33
- 1:19:14Speaker 4: years old going through child custody hell. And I just
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: happened to be with some dudes that I know in Aspen.
- 1:19:20Speaker 4: And to discover that the white guys had the best
- 1:19:22Speaker 4: of this stuff. Hydro grown. I can still taste that
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: steak I had in Aspen as a result of smoking
- 1:19:28Speaker 4: that dang doobie. And I started doing my deep dive.
- 1:19:32Speaker 4: So I'm really the kind of person where I love
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: the best of anything. You know what I'm saying? I
- 1:19:36Speaker 4: like the best steak. I love the best. If I'm
- 1:19:38Speaker 4: going to drink, I don't drink casually. I like I
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: love a Pappy Van Winkle, a McAllen, something that's just like, oh, oh,
- 1:19:46Speaker 4: my gosh, I can't believe this is going down this smooth.
- 1:19:48Speaker 4: And that right there is in the caliber of everything
- 1:19:51Speaker 4: that I just mentioned.
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: Yeah, the best podcast. He does the best of everything.
- 1:19:54Speaker 4: I only do the best of everything.
- 1:19:56Speaker 2: The best podcast. That's why we love you. I like that, bro.
- 1:19:58Speaker 4: Come on, man.
- 1:19:58Speaker 3: How often do you smoke?
- 1:20:01Speaker 4: I'd say probably maybe about three or four times a month.
- 1:20:04Speaker 3: Oh, so not that often.
- 1:20:04Speaker 4: No, it is.
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: Not that often.
- 1:20:07Speaker 4: No, it's a social thing. It's an enhancer. He's not
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: a user. It's a make a member. Come on, you
- 1:20:13Speaker 4: know who we kicking with. Like, when we with him
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: and this goes up.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: What happens for the evening?
- 1:20:19Speaker 3: And that person we're talking about, you guys, is Sam Jackson.
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: Ladies and gentlemen, that's our show.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: Please subscribe, like, share, at GTTP pod. And if you're
- 1:20:28Speaker 2: watching on YouTube, at GTTP podcast.
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: And let me tell you something, my man still got hands.
- 1:20:35Speaker 2: Damn.
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: He's some big ass hands.
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: He's a mitt.
- 1:20:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: You can pawn my album cover.
- 1:20:40Speaker 4: Purple Urkel.
