- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday.
- 0:14It's the 26th of August. Great to have your company.
- 0:18I hope you're going well. I hope this week is treating you
- 0:20well as we are in, would you believe it, the last week of
- 0:24winter in this part of the world?
- 0:26Oh, isn't that welcome? Although in Tasmania, winter
- 0:29kind of holds on through the first month of spring.
- 0:32Yeah, I think September is probably the hardest month for
- 0:34me as the whole world says, hey, it's springtime and things start
- 0:37to blossom, but blow me down, the days do not get much warmer.
- 0:41That's when October comes and things start to feel a bit
- 0:44easier. Or you might be far away where
- 0:46the weather is all opposite to here.
- 0:49Wherever we are, whatever's going on.
- 0:51Great to have your company as you have tapped on plane, not to
- 0:54get a weather update, but to hear this next chapter and
- 0:58what's happening in the growth and the birth of our church.
- 1:02And at the end of yesterday's reading, we were introduced to
- 1:06this young man named Saul. And today we will continue to
- 1:10hear a little about him and then about the church growing in all
- 1:15sorts of different directions. So join me friends as we
- 1:18continue the story reading Acts Chapter 8.
- 1:32Saul was one of the witnesses, and he agreed completely with
- 1:36the killing of Stephen. A great wave of persecution
- 1:41began that day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem, and all
- 1:44the believers except the apostles were scattered through
- 1:48the regions of Judea and Samaria.
- 1:51Some devout men came and buried Stephen with great mourning, but
- 1:56Saul was going everywhere to destroy the church.
- 2:00He went from house to house, dragging out both men and women
- 2:04to throw them into prison. But the believers who were
- 2:07scattered preached the good news about Jesus wherever they went.
- 2:11Philip, for example, went to the city of Samaria and told the
- 2:15people there about the Messiah. Crowds listened intently to
- 2:19Philip because they were eager to hear his message and see the
- 2:23miraculous signs he did. Many evil spirits were cast out
- 2:27screaming as they left their victims, and many who had been
- 2:31paralysed or lame were healed, so there was great joy in that
- 2:35city. A man named Simon had been a
- 2:38sorcerer there for many years, amazing the people of Samaria
- 2:42and claiming to be someone great.
- 2:44Everyone from the least to the greatest, often spoke of him as
- 2:48the Great One, the power of God. They listened closely to him
- 2:53because for a long time he had been astounding them with his
- 2:56magic. But now the people believed
- 2:59Philip's message of good news concerning the Kingdom of God
- 3:02and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women
- 3:07were baptised. Then Simon himself believed and
- 3:10was baptised. He began following Philip
- 3:13wherever he went, and he was amazed by the signs and great
- 3:17miracles Philip performed. When the apostles in Jerusalem
- 3:21heard that the people of Samaria had accepted God's message, they
- 3:25sent Peter and John there. As soon as they arrived, they
- 3:29prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit.
- 3:32The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had
- 3:36only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.
- 3:39Then Peter and John laid their hands upon these believers, and
- 3:43they received the Holy Spirit. When Simon saw that the Spirit
- 3:48was given when the apostles laid their hands on people, he
- 3:51offered the money to buy this power.
- 3:53Let me have this power too, he exclaimed, So that when I lay my
- 3:57hands on people, they will receive the Holy Spirit.
- 4:01But people replied, May your money be destroyed with you for
- 4:05thinking God's gift can be bought.
- 4:08You can have no part in this, for your heart is not right with
- 4:11God. Repent of your wickedness and
- 4:14pray to the Lord. Perhaps He will forgive your
- 4:17evil thoughts, for I can see that you are full of bitter
- 4:20jealousy and are held captive by sin.
- 4:24Pray to the Lord for me. Simon exclaimed.
- 4:27That these terrible things you've said won't happen to me.
- 4:31After testifying and preaching the word of the Lord in Samaria,
- 4:35Peter and John returned to Jerusalem, and they stopped in
- 4:38many Samaritan villages along the way to preach the good news.
- 4:43As for Philip, an Angel of the Lord said to him, go South Down
- 4:48the desert Rd that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.
- 4:52So he started out and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch
- 4:57of great authority under the kandak, the queen of Ethiopia.
- 5:03The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and he was now
- 5:06returning, seated in his carriage.
- 5:09He was reading aloud from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
- 5:13The Holy Spirit said to Philip, go over and walk along beside
- 5:16the carriage. Philip ran over and heard the
- 5:20man reading from the prophet Isaiah.
- 5:22Philip asked, do you understand what you're reading?
- 5:26The man replied, how can I unless someone instructs me?
- 5:31And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with
- 5:33him. The passage of Scripture he had
- 5:36been reading was this. He was led like a sheep to the
- 5:39slaughter, and as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he
- 5:43did not open his mouth. He was humiliated and received
- 5:47no justice. Who can speak of his
- 5:49descendants, for his life was taken from the earth.
- 5:53The eunuch asked Philip, tell me, was the prophet talking
- 5:57about himself or someone else? So, beginning with the same
- 6:01scripture, Philip told him the good news about Jesus.
- 6:05As they rode along, they came to some water and the eunuch said,
- 6:09look, there's some water, why can't I be baptised?
- 6:14He ordered the carriage to stop and then went down into the
- 6:17water and Philip baptised him. When they came up out of the
- 6:21water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away.
- 6:25The eunuch never saw him again and went on his way rejoicing.
- 6:30Meanwhile, Philip found himself farther N at the town of
- 6:34Azettus. He preached the good news there
- 6:37and in every town along the way until he came to say Surya
- 6:52Jesus. We can so easily become
- 6:55accustomed to the phenomenal nature of your message.
- 7:00This message of forgiveness, this message of inclusion, this
- 7:03message of love, this message of a God of the universe who loves
- 7:10us enough to send his only son. And we hear all of these early
- 7:16Christians heading into all these different places and just
- 7:19telling people about you and that changing lives again and
- 7:23again. Jesus, I pray that you would
- 7:27give us boldness, that we would not underestimate the power of
- 7:31your story and the way that your love can transform not just us,
- 7:36but the people around us too. Lord, give us your spirit, Your
- 7:42spirit that would empower us to speak clearly of the hope that
- 7:46we have in you so that we can continually point to you, our
- 7:53wonderful Saviour, in whose name we pray all of these things.
- 7:58Amen.
