Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Rick Mast: I Wish NASCAR Wouldn't Have Penalized Austin Dillon
Transcript
- 0:00Hi, everybody. Rick Mast here.
- 0:02I guess I'm the only living human being in this country that
- 0:07has yet to weigh in on the fast go.
- 0:09That was Richmond Sunday night, right?
- 0:12Well, there's a couple reasons for it.
- 0:13Number one, I was a little incapacitated for a couple days,
- 0:17a little under the weather. And when I finally started
- 0:20coming out of that and feeling better, it was last night, which
- 0:23is Tuesday night. And I'm thinking, I don't know,
- 0:26I want to be taught let's just wait on NASCAR's verdict.
- 0:28Well, NASCAR handed down the verdict.
- 0:30As we all know, Austin Dillon, his win was not stripped, but he
- 0:35he's not eligible for the play offs.
- 0:37OK, now this goes to a long this goes to a big much bigger, much
- 0:43bigger, much bigger thing going on here.
- 0:45This goes back to one of the reasons Tony Stewart left as a
- 0:50driver. One of the reasons some of the
- 0:52veteran drivers are, oh, man, disgusted with the way we drive,
- 0:57Dale, Not disgusted, but just not their way, the way they were
- 0:59taught. You know, we know when we have a
- 1:02green white checkered, that's probably somebody's going to get
- 1:05wrecked. Whoever's leading at the green
- 1:07white checkered is probably not going to win.
- 1:08And the guys, they just, you know, they instead of racing,
- 1:12they knock each other out of the way.
- 1:14That's the way, that's the way it's been going for a while,
- 1:16right? We all agree to that.
- 1:18And you know, like with me, man, if I had to drive today, in
- 1:24today's world, I wouldn't make it.
- 1:25I just, you know, the, the, the, the way the guys do.
- 1:29And I'm, I'm not knocking what they do.
- 1:31That's just the way of the, it's just the lay of the land now.
- 1:33That's the way they do it. And you know, it just didn't
- 1:37work. It wouldn't have worked in my
- 1:38time, in my era, Just we did it differently.
- 1:41So with this penalty, you know, the end result, the end result
- 1:47of what Dylan did really is no different than what we've seen
- 1:52many guys do many times. I mean, you, you bump and run
- 1:56you, you move the guy out, sometimes hit the wall,
- 1:58sometimes they spin, they wreck, they do the deal.
- 2:01But never have we had anything like this taken away, like it
- 2:04was taken away from Dylan, right?
- 2:08And I guess we all know that all the drivers, everybody's fussing
- 2:12about, you know, the rubbing and the bumping and the moving guys
- 2:14out of the way. But you know, there's never that
- 2:17line that you that NASCAR I think felt like you crossed that
- 2:21they would have to step in. Well, the line's been determined
- 2:25it it's now 4 carlets. If you're 4 carlets back or
- 2:30three, maybe it was three and you make a hard effort to go in
- 2:35there and just turn the guy. We're not going to allow that to
- 2:38happen. All right, Well, if you 2
- 2:41carlets back or one car length back and you bump the guy and
- 2:44move him out of the way and win then or spend the guy.
- 2:46I mean, we've spend, we've seen plenty, plenty times when the
- 2:50guy in second place hits the guy in first and actually spends him
- 2:54and the guy goes on and wins the race, right?
- 2:56And no penalties. But this time NASCAR took a
- 3:00stance. And I'm telling you something
- 3:01guys, it's the it's the eye test.
- 3:03This thing, it did not pass the eye test, right?
- 3:08And the problem with NASCAR on their side is, you know, what,
- 3:13what, what, what passes the eye test, what you know from here on
- 3:16out. If a guy's one car length behind
- 3:19and bumps the guy and gets by him right, and he happens to
- 3:21spin, all right, that's OK. If he's two car, if he's three
- 3:25car lengths back and catches him and runs into him and spins him,
- 3:29do we do the same thing? I don't know where that line is.
- 3:31I don't know that NASCAR really knows where that line is.
- 3:34And believe me, guys, when I tell you this, NASCAR does not
- 3:37want to own this. They don't want to have to get
- 3:41in the middle of this. The best thing about our sport
- 3:43is all one of the best things about our sport has always been
- 3:46self policing. We take care, the drivers take
- 3:49care of it themselves, right? We always have.
- 3:52It's a self policing sport. NASCAR does last thing we want
- 3:55to do, they want to do is step in and do something like this
- 3:58when these things go on. And but this thing that the eye
- 4:03test was so bad on this that I guess they felt like they had to
- 4:07do something. And, you know, keeping the dude
- 4:10out of the playoffs or, or making that one where he can't
- 4:13get in the playoffs. That was that's pretty big.
- 4:16You know, probably if they'd have took the win and kept him
- 4:20in the playoffs, which you couldn't do that, right?
- 4:23But they, the way they did it to me, they just set themselves up
- 4:26for all right, we're going to have to start policing this.
- 4:29And I'm, I'm afraid, I'm afraid that down the road, you know,
- 4:34we're going to get in some more back and forwards.
- 4:37He should have done this. They should have done that.
- 4:39NASCAR didn't do this. NASCAR did do that.
- 4:42You know, I just feel like they're opening themselves up
- 4:44for, gosh, more scrutiny when these things happen.
- 4:48If they make it, if they come out with a penalty or they don't
- 4:50come out with a penalty, right. And who's involved and who's not
- 4:54involved? That that's that's the muddy the
- 4:57the Muddy Waters part of this that I just detest that I hate.
- 5:02You know, I wish, you know, I wish NASCAR don't penalize him
- 5:07the the next week 22 Carr takes care of the three or the first
- 5:13week of the play offs. You take care of the three.
- 5:15You police it yourself. You know, you you take care of
- 5:18it yourself. But you know, the eye tests and
- 5:22the social media and everybody fussing and raising cane about
- 5:25this deal, you know, you know, you know, I mean, basically the
- 5:30drivers back NASCAR into a corner.
- 5:33They don't want to do this, but they've had to do it.
- 5:36They've had to step in. I would not like to be NASCAR's
- 5:40hierarchy figuring this thing out from here on, you know, the
- 5:43deal and to go get a little more detail.
- 5:47You know, if maybe if Dylan had went in there and maybe just got
- 5:51him without wreck anymore said, man, I didn't mean to wreck him.
- 5:54I just meant to try to get him loose.
- 5:56I don't know if any of that would have mattered.
- 5:58I I don't blame Dylan for the for Hamlin wrecking the way I've
- 6:02looked at it, you know, if Hamlin could have kept it down
- 6:04low, I think maybe that it went on.
- 6:06Who who knows about all that? But anyhow.
- 6:09And then they find Logano for the deal on pit Rd., which is,
- 6:12you know, rightfully so, you just don't do that.
- 6:14Then people are fussing about, well, we got all the people on
- 6:17pit Rd. Well, what I saw was mainly pit
- 6:19crew members on pit Rd. except for the winning team.
- 6:23The winning team is where all the mob of people were.
- 6:26And that's where Joey got himself a little bit of trouble
- 6:28there. And I get it when people are
- 6:30saying these people shouldn't be out there.
- 6:32I mean, NASCAR, they'll they'll address that.
- 6:34But but man, going back to the to the penalty, I mean, that's a
- 6:38stout penalty, guys. I mean, it's we're taught, the
- 6:42drivers are taught sponsors. Everybody's taught when and
- 6:46you're in. What do they say when and you're
- 6:49in when and you're in. Dylan won, he's in three days
- 6:55later, guess what? He's not in, he's out, he's out,
- 6:59right. So golly bum, we can we could go
- 7:03into this little bit more depth in the detail, but that's my
- 7:06first reaction to this. I think I'll get some more stuff
- 7:09going here and let y'all know a little bit a little bit more
- 7:11about this tomorrow. Anyhow, I'm still coming out
- 7:14about a little incapacitated deal.
- 7:16Not feeling the greatest, but I guess what look here, see this?
- 7:20This is a bed. You know where I'm at again
- 7:23again, I'm at the ocean. I'm at the ocean again folks.
- 7:27That's right. All this excitement going on
- 7:30with NASCAR and I'm at the ocean.
- 7:33But I reported tomorrow again. I'll be reporting tomorrow again
- 7:37on this stuff. Guys to the loo.
