- 0:00Poverty has been around forever, but America
- 0:03figured out the best way to beat it. So the question
- 0:06is, why are we forgetting that now? Welcome to
- 0:16the show Right Now Hot Takes, where we are unfiltered
- 0:19bold. And right now with our news and what we're
- 0:22talking about, I'm your host, Jim Rand. Got a
- 0:26great episode today. But first, I love this country.
- 0:29And I love the American way, the promise that
- 0:32if you work hard, build skills and create value,
- 0:36you can rise and build a better life for yourself
- 0:38and your family. That's the heart of this entire
- 0:41show. And today we're talking about one of the
- 0:44biggest lies in modern politics, the idea that
- 0:47government can fix poverty. Well -meaning people
- 0:51on both sides keep pushing more programs, more
- 0:54spending, more redistribution. But the evidence
- 0:57is clear. Government can't fix poverty. Free
- 1:01enterprise can. Let's break it down honestly.
- 1:04For decades now, we've poured trillions into
- 1:07anti -poverty programs. Trillions. Yet the official
- 1:11poverty rate hasn't budged much. And in some
- 1:13communities, it's gotten worse when you look
- 1:16at family stability and long -term outcomes.
- 1:19Why? Because government solutions too often create
- 1:22dependence instead of independence. They trap
- 1:25people with high effective tax rates on work,
- 1:29discourage marriage, and replace the dignity
- 1:31of earned success with monthly checks. Real escape
- 1:35from poverty has always come from the same things,
- 1:38work, skills, family, and opportunity. That's
- 1:41exactly what free enterprise rewards. Look at
- 1:44the evidence. Since the 1980s and especially
- 1:47the 1990s, welfare reform, when we added work
- 1:51requirements, poverty among single mothers dropped
- 1:54dramatically. When we cut taxes and reduced regulations,
- 1:58millions of jobs were created and people moved
- 2:01up. And think about two big recessions in the
- 2:0420th century that show the difference clearly.
- 2:07Right after World War I, in the early 1920s,
- 2:10America faced a sharp depression. President Warren
- 2:13G. Harding cut taxes sharply, slashed federal
- 2:17spending dramatically, and got government out
- 2:19of the way. The result? One of the fastest recoveries
- 2:23in American history. Unemployment dropped quickly,
- 2:26and the roaring 20s began. Contrast that with
- 2:30the 1929 stock market crash and the Great Depression
- 2:33that followed. Heavy government intervention
- 2:36under Hoover and especially FDR, massive spending
- 2:40programs, tax hikes, tariffs like Smoot -Hawley
- 2:43and heavy regulation actually prolonged the suffering
- 2:46for years. It wasn't lack of government action
- 2:50that made it worse. It was too much of the wrong
- 2:53kind. Free enterprise, when allowed to work,
- 2:56recovers faster and stronger. Countries that
- 2:59lean into free markets consistently see faster
- 3:01poverty reduction and better mobility than those
- 3:04that rely on big government redistribution. Here's
- 3:08the hook, the part that should stop you cold.
- 3:11Government has spent trillions fighting poverty
- 3:14and the best it has done is manage it. The podcast
- 3:21that makes history feel alive and relevant. Each
- 3:24episode walks you through one decade at a time
- 3:26from the early American colonies to the modern
- 3:28world. Posted by Jim Rand, it's engaging, insightful
- 3:32and full of the lessons we can still learn from
- 3:34the past. The link is in the show notes or search
- 3:37for history in decades on Apple, Spotify or wherever
- 3:40you listen and download it today. Free enterprise
- 3:45is the only system that has ever actually beaten
- 3:48it. Entrepreneur and thinker Vivek Ramaswamy
- 3:52has nailed this. True compassion isn't trapping
- 3:55people in dependency. It's giving them the tools
- 3:58and freedom to rise through their own effort.
- 4:01Elon Musk has repeatedly shown how innovation
- 4:04and free enterprise solve problems government
- 4:07programs never could. From electric vehicles
- 4:10to space travel to making technology affordable
- 4:13for everyone. Young people listening right now,
- 4:17especially 20 -somethings trying to get ahead,
- 4:20this matters to you. The path out of poverty
- 4:23isn't waiting for a bigger government check.
- 4:26It's learning a trade, starting a side hustle,
- 4:29taking that first job even if it doesn't pay
- 4:31much, and climbing. Free enterprise gives you
- 4:34that chance. It rewards grit. It creates jobs.
- 4:38It turns ideas into businesses that employ thousands.
- 4:43Government programs too often do the opposite.
- 4:45They make it comfortable to stay stuck and they
- 4:48take from hard -working people. History proves
- 4:51this over and over. America went from a poor
- 4:54agrarian nation to the wealthiest country on
- 4:57earth, not because of central planners, but because
- 5:00free people were allowed to work, invent, compete,
- 5:04and keep the rewards of their labor. Immigrants
- 5:06still come here legally every year and climb
- 5:09faster than anywhere else in the world for the
- 5:12same reason. Voluntary cooperation is the engine.
- 5:16That's a powerful, straightforward idea. It means
- 5:19real progress in families, communities, churches,
- 5:23businesses, or even whole societies comes from
- 5:26people freely choosing to work together, not
- 5:29from top -down force or government mandates.
- 5:33When people freely trade your labor for wages,
- 5:36your product for customers, your investment for
- 5:39returns, everyone who participates wins. Government
- 5:43coercion through heavy redistribution distorts
- 5:46those incentives. It punishes success and rewards
- 5:49dependency. I'm not saying we should have zero
- 5:52safety net. Reasonable temporary help for those
- 5:55truly unable to work has a place. But the idea
- 5:59that government can engineer away poverty is
- 6:02a proven failure. Free enterprise, personal responsibility,
- 6:06and strong families have lifted more people out
- 6:09of poverty than any program ever has. Young people,
- 6:13don't fall for the easy promises. Bet on yourself
- 6:16and the American system that rewards effort and
- 6:19creativity. Learn a skill that pays. Take responsibility.
- 6:23Build something. That's how you win and how our
- 6:27country stays the land of opportunity. I love
- 6:30this nation too much to sugarcoat it. What do
