Transcript
- 0:02Tad Eggleston: Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome back to 22 Panels, my returning guests for at least the fourth time. I'm gonna have to, like, go look it up. I know that you've come separately at least once. I know Ryan showed up for…
- 0:17Tad Eggleston: for a regular episode, when you guys were under… completely under siege in Minneapolis.
- 0:28e joy: Yeah.
- 0:30Tad Eggleston: But I think this is… this is at least the fourth or fifth time for each of you?
- 0:36Ryan: about right.
- 0:36Tad Eggleston: And… and… and I think…
- 0:39Tad Eggleston: Feels like the fourth or fifth insert name that… that I've… that I've talked about.
- 0:45Tad Eggleston: on 22… I think the 4th.
- 0:49e joy: I think that's right.
- 0:50Tad Eggleston: I think it's the 4th, because we're not quite to 5 years, and we started in October, so I think we started after your insert name, so the first one we would have been a part of would have been…
- 1:02Tad Eggleston: the… the… 2022.
- 1:08e joy: Yup.
- 1:09Tad Eggleston: Duh.
- 1:09e joy: That was the one that we held at the Eagles Club.
- 1:12Ryan: At the last minute.
- 1:13e joy: At the last… At the last.
- 1:14Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:15e joy: And then I didn't.
- 1:16Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:16e joy: Thank you.
- 1:18Tad Eggleston: So, and I'm looking at the picture here, and you got my friend Daria Faruhar.
- 1:22Tad Eggleston: Front and center. Yeah. Thank you for connecting me with her. She's fantastic in Chicago area, and we've had her out at the comic shop that I do stuff for out here now, too.
- 1:34Tad Eggleston: I swear to God, she's gonna get her law degree and take over the world. So…
- 1:39Ryan: I hope so.
- 1:41Tad Eggleston: I do too, because… Should do a better job than a lot of.
- 1:46Ryan: Oh, God! Absolutely.
- 1:52Tad Eggleston: So, is this the… 6th or 7th insert name?
- 1:58e joy: 8.
- 1:59Tad Eggleston: 8th?
- 2:01Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow!
- 2:03Tad Eggleston: So, 8 insert names. So, my first question… Eight times around now,
- 2:12Tad Eggleston: what's the biggest thing… well, I mean, first, one of you… one of you give the basic, like…
- 2:19Tad Eggleston: what is insert name, and remind people to come and whatnot. This is one of my problems sometimes when I do multiple podcasts in a day, particularly when I know the people I'm talking to, is like, I just jump into the conversation and go, oh, wait a minute, we also want to tell people about stuff.
- 2:35Tad Eggleston: So somebody give me dates, times, locations, and what Insert Name Comics and Zines Festival is, though, to a certain extent, it…
- 2:45Tad Eggleston: describes itself. But then I… then I'm gonna ask some questions about, like,
- 2:52Tad Eggleston: organizing it, and what you know now that you'd wish you'd known 8 years ago, that sort of thing. So that's what you can start thinking in the back of your head.
- 3:02e joy: I guess I can do the telling about it. I, started Insert Name in,
- 3:10e joy: 2019, because I couldn't get… I had only been doing comics for a year, and I was just, like, really… I wanted more, like.
- 3:18e joy: comics and, like, zine stuff going on in the city, so I,
- 3:23e joy: It was only, like, 8 tables back then, and yeah, it's, Sunday, August 30th, from 12 to 6 p.m. at Odd Mart,
- 3:35e joy: in, Uptown in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- 3:42Tad Eggleston: Specifically on Lindale Avenue.
- 3:45e joy: Yep, Lindale 25th.
- 3:51Tad Eggleston: And 8 years, so, like, my first question, like, one of my favorite questions to ask anybody who's been doing stuff for a long time, particularly things that are, like.
- 4:02Tad Eggleston: There's no… no training manual for…
- 4:08Tad Eggleston: What have you learned in the 8 years that, like, if you had the time machine and could, like, write yourself a letter.
- 4:15Tad Eggleston: Before doing the first one, you'd know… make certain that you knew
- 4:20Tad Eggleston: day one, that you're like, oh, once I realized this, it was essential.
- 4:26e joy: Mmm… I'd say just, like, don't take it so seriously, it's just a zine fest, you know?
- 4:32e joy: Like, you don't really have to worry about… I mean, there's certain things you need to worry about, but it's just like,
- 4:43e joy: Oh, also, actually, the number one thing is that it's easy… much easier doing that… doing, organizing stuff when you have
- 4:51e joy: another person or multiple people on the team, instead of just trying to do it yourself. That's actually probably the number one thing.
- 5:00Tad Eggleston: Shocking, Emily. Shocking.
- 5:02e joy: I know.
- 5:03Tad Eggleston: Asking for help works.
- 5:06e joy: Yeah, it does, and so Ryan joined the team, after.
- 5:10Tad Eggleston: That's something I have to teach my students a lot. You're like…
- 5:13Tad Eggleston: The worst that can happen when you ask for help is that they'll sell you no, and the best that can happen is it'll get a lot easier.
- 5:21e joy: Yup.
- 5:23e joy: my favorite filmmaker, John Waters, always, has this quote, a no is free. So, like… Right. Yeah.
- 5:34Tad Eggleston: You know? Which is also why, like, don't take it personally when people say no, because 9 times out of 10, it's not.
- 5:41Tad Eggleston: 9 times out of 10, if somebody says no to you, it's not because they don't like you, or because…
- 5:46Tad Eggleston: whatever, it's because… Whatever you're asking is just outside of what they can do.
- 5:53Ryan: Yeah, everybody's got their own shit going on.
- 5:56Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 5:57Tad Eggleston: Everybody has their own limits, everybody has their own resources and expertise, and that's the other reason that asking for help can be a huge deal. Because sometimes it's even better than splitting the labor.
- 6:10Tad Eggleston: Because you can go, oh, I'm good at this. So, yes, I'm doing half of it, but I'm doing what, for me, is the easy half. And yes, you're doing half of it, but you're doing what, for you, is the easy half.
- 6:25e joy: Yeah, last year… so they're not, organizing this year, but, I had two,
- 6:34e joy: we had 2 more people on the organizing team last year, Lo and Trina.
- 6:40e joy: And Lowe's set us up with, like, some really awesome, spreadsheets, and I am not an Excel person, so that was extremely helpful, and
- 6:51e joy: Trina also, did a bunch of organizing stuff, and Ryan, of course, is the master of fundraising, and always knows about the comics artists that maybe I don't know about, because he's always reading, so…
- 7:04Tad Eggleston: Ryan might be the only person I know who I… I… I wouldn't bet…
- 7:11Tad Eggleston: reads less comics than I do.
- 7:13Ryan: Oh, I don't read as many as you, I don't think.
- 7:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, you don't think… I think that if we started comparing, we'd be a lot closer. I think there would be way less crossover than anybody else that reads as many comics as we do.
- 7:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 7:30Ryan: Possible.
- 7:31Tad Eggleston: We cross over with certain small press stuff and certain independent stuff. Most of the time, when we cross over with independent stuff, it's because I read your review and went, oh, I need to read this.
- 7:45Ryan: Hey, this weekend I've been reading a DC book.
- 7:49Tad Eggleston: Which one?
- 7:50Ryan: It's, DC Western, The Hangman Never Loses.
- 7:54Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 7:55Ryan: Yeah, it's one of those, DC's finest reprint collections.
- 7:59Ryan: of, 1970s Western stuff.
- 8:03Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 8:03Ryan: Yeah, and it is great. Some of the art in there, I mean, you got Frank Thorne, Gil Kane, Neil Adams.
- 8:12Ryan: And it, I read it because one of the guys at TCJ, I can't remember who, it might have been Seneca or Nicholson or somebody, wrote a really long review of Son of Tomahawk, which I'd never read.
- 8:27Ryan: and said it was one of the great masterpieces of American comics that nobody knows about. And it's all… the whole Son of Tomahawk run is reprinted in,
- 8:37Ryan: this Hangman Never Loses thing, and yeah, it is pretty damn good. I don't know if I'm quite as high on it as he is, but there's other good stuff in there too, some early Jonah Heck stuff, and
- 8:48Ryan: El Diablo and The Outlaw, and it's just a lot of fun.
- 8:52Ryan: I'm not even a big Western guy too much, but this book's a lot of fun.
- 8:57Tad Eggleston: No, I'm flipping through that article right now and going, I… I… I'm just from seeing what
- 9:06Tad Eggleston: just from seeing the panels that they pulled, I'm going, okay, I might have to…
- 9:11Ryan: Yeah, it's cool.
- 9:12Tad Eggleston: Go look at this book, yeah.
- 9:13Ryan: It's absolutely gorgeous.
- 9:15Tad Eggleston: No, we did recently do,
- 9:18Tad Eggleston: on the Pulp Blotter Book Club, we went through all of Jimmy Palmiati and Justin Gray's run on Jonah Hex.
- 9:28Tad Eggleston: Which was really outstanding.
- 9:33Tad Eggleston: and had kind of a who's who of… of artists, with… with the most issues done by Jordi Bernay, but… but…
- 9:44Tad Eggleston: Like…
- 9:44Ryan: Did that book come out?
- 9:46Tad Eggleston: That was, like, just pre-New 52, so it would have been… Late 90s, early 2000s?
- 9:53Tad Eggleston: I think?
- 9:57Tad Eggleston: And Jimmy was essentially putting his editor hat on.
- 10:05Tad Eggleston: Because, you know, from his times running things at… with, Joe at Marvel.
- 10:12Tad Eggleston: He knew all sorts of artists, that sort of thing.
- 10:15Tad Eggleston: That started in 2005.
- 10:20Tad Eggleston: So it was like… 75 issues from 2005?
- 10:25Ryan: Okay. Did they…
- 10:26Tad Eggleston: Oh.
- 10:27Ryan: 252, Jonah Hex.
- 10:30Tad Eggleston: They did, but they kind of wound up rolling it into the DC Universe, and it was even Jimmy and Justin continued on it, but it was kind of a different book.
- 10:42Tad Eggleston: And they called it All-Star Western when they launched the New 52.
- 10:49Ryan: Yeah, that's what they are in this, Hangman Never Loses, the early Jonah.
- 10:52Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 10:53Ryan: We're an all-star Western.
- 10:54Tad Eggleston: Right, right.
- 10:56Ryan: Remember when they put him, like, in a Mad Max future, and Keith Gippen drew it?
- 11:02Tad Eggleston: Vaguely.
- 11:04Tad Eggleston: I think I've heard of that more than I've read it.
- 11:07Ryan: That was, like, early 80s, and it was.
- 11:10Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 11:10Ryan: X, and yeah, they put him, like, in a road warrior-type future, and had Keith Giffen art. That was a wild book, man.
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 11:19Tad Eggleston: No, Jimmy… Jimmy made him,
- 11:23Tad Eggleston: very eastward, man with no name.
- 11:26Tad Eggleston: And he told, almost always, self-contained stories.
- 11:33Tad Eggleston: Which is part of the reason they were able to get such
- 11:38Tad Eggleston: outstanding art. It's like, because he'd talk to somebody, he'd say, hey, you want to do a Jonah Hex book with me? And they'd say, sure, let me see what I can get into my schedule, you know, how long is it gonna be? And he's like, 22 to 28 pages, depending on what you've got time for, and he's like, what's my deadline? And he's like.
- 11:54Tad Eggleston: A year? Do you need two years? You know? And they'd be like, oh, I can do it whenever? Absolutely.
- 12:02Ryan: I liked those, well, I think everybody liked them, those Tim Truman, Jonah Hexes for Vertigo in the 90s.
- 12:09Tad Eggleston: Those… those were good, too.
- 12:11Ryan: Yeah, I thought.
- 12:11Ryan: Fantastic.
- 12:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah. I like Tim Truman a lot on,
- 12:17Tad Eggleston: Oh, what was the… the… first book that he did with Ostrander?
- 12:23Ryan: Crim jack.
- 12:25Tad Eggleston: Yes!
- 12:26Tad Eggleston: S.
- 12:27Ryan: Yeah, he's a good artist.
- 12:29Tad Eggleston: I did… I read Grim Jack a few years ago.
- 12:32Tad Eggleston: Before we absolutely bore Emily to tears, though.
- 12:37Ryan: Yeah.
- 12:37Tad Eggleston: She's not into the old Marvel DC stuff, but she did mention to me that she recently… it was a…
- 12:46Tad Eggleston: What was the con that you went to recently?
- 12:49e joy: Oh, I went to, SpringCon, at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds.
- 12:55e joy: very, affordable con, only, $10, and I was…
- 13:00e joy: They're with Twin Cities Zine Fest, and we had a table where we taught kids how to make zines.
- 13:05e joy: But we also had butcher paper, and it was mostly just people doodling on the table, and it was really fun.
- 13:11Tad Eggleston: I love that. That's fantastic.
- 13:17Tad Eggleston: I like… A, I think there should be more of that at almost any con. One of the things that I like about C2E2 is that they have, like, a family area that regularly has
- 13:35Tad Eggleston: people teaching how to do this. You know, Jeffrey Brown will always spend at least an hour on a couple of different days, like, teaching kids how to draw.
- 13:44Tad Eggleston: Star Wars characters, or… Whatever, you know.
- 13:49Tad Eggleston: So that you not only have something that, that, that appeals to, to…
- 13:56Tad Eggleston: To the younger fair, but, but, like…
- 14:00Tad Eggleston: Has them kind of understanding the physical aspect of the medium.
- 14:06Tad Eggleston: Which is always…
- 14:10Tad Eggleston: always good, like, I'm married to an art teacher, so I'm always in favor of anything that has people drawing.
- 14:17Ryan: Absolutely.
- 14:18Tad Eggleston: If we'd been there, my wife would have just pulled up a chair at that table and possibly not left it. Just expected me to bring anything by to her if I thought she'd like it.
- 14:31e joy: There were some people who were just there, kind of, like, waiting for their, children and stuff. Right. Well, they colored in, and… Right. It was like, I don't care, you know, you can…
- 14:42Tad Eggleston: Exactly!
- 14:43e joy: Let us show you some zines!
- 14:45Tad Eggleston: So, so you're gonna add something like that at insert name?
- 14:49Tad Eggleston: Just have the butcher paper table?
- 14:51e joy: Yeah, usually at, these little ZineFat… well, SpringCon is like a… what I guess I would call, like, like a more mainstream… Right.
- 15:02e joy: But, like, I was really surprised, like, I, I think because I have less experience with them, sometimes I underestimate the mainstream cons, especially because I don't go to them very often, but I was…
- 15:14Tad Eggleston: Oh, I understand.
- 15:15e joy: Yeah, and it's like… I'm like, oh, was there gonna be anything for me? But there was a lot that I thought was really cool. I want to show you… there was a table with, like, two… two little boys and their mom and dad, and, like, the mom had, like, a podcast, and then the dad had a zine that's just a Word document.
- 15:35e joy: And it's like… You can't see it, it's very blurry, but it's like.
- 15:39Tad Eggleston: The Whip Thomas Town?
- 15:41e joy: 6 pages in it.
- 15:42Tad Eggleston: I love it.
- 15:43e joy: He, like, reviewed, like, he went to the Iron Maiden show at, like, one of the big stadiums over here, and he's, like, reviewing that show, and just, like.
- 15:52e joy: His favorite 45s, and .
- 15:55Tad Eggleston: I love it.
- 15:56e joy: It's a real old-school zine, and I really like.
- 15:58Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 15:59e joy: And then the kids have their own comic books. I was like, oh, this is like a family affair, this is really cool.
- 16:03Tad Eggleston: That's… that's super cool. I mean, again, anything…
- 16:08Tad Eggleston: anything that has kids making. I'm not the screen hater, but, like, I like…
- 16:15Tad Eggleston: I also like to see kids creating.
- 16:18Tad Eggleston: I like to see kids doing imaginative tasks, rather than just… repetitive tasks.
- 16:27Ryan: No, let's settle for any evidence we can get that families still work, you know what I mean?
- 16:32Tad Eggleston: Well, that's a bonus as well.
- 16:36Tad Eggleston: But no, I mean, I just… I remember going through it with my children and realizing that what was special about Star Wars action figures was that they had one for even the characters that were only on screen for a second or so. So you had to do things with them other than just recreate the movie.
- 16:55Tad Eggleston: Otherwise, you'd get bored. Whereas, like.
- 16:59Tad Eggleston: When my kids were young, it's like, oh, here's 3 different versions of Jack Sparrow, but we don't have any random pirates.
- 17:09Tad Eggleston: Yes.
- 17:10Ryan: Star Wars had ones for every creature sitting in that bar.
- 17:14Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 17:15Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 17:16Tad Eggleston: Which meant… which meant that, like, you had to… well, you didn't have to, but you were encouraged to, like, come up with your own stories, because, oh, I've got the devil horn guy. He doesn't speak or do anything but drink, but…
- 17:32Tad Eggleston: I'm 5, I'm not just gonna turn the figure slowly at the bar, I'm gonna have him do stuff.
- 17:41e joy: Yeah, kids aren't really recreating, like, my dinner with Andre, you know?
- 17:45Ryan: Oh!
- 17:46Ryan: Go on.
- 17:47e joy: Adventures and stuff.
- 17:51Tad Eggleston: But, like, the more different characters you have to play with, the more you can have your adventures become crazy and fantastic and…
- 18:02Tad Eggleston: whatever, rather than just falling into, well, this is what Jack Sparrow does, because that's what he did in the movie, or this is what happened in the movie of Jurassic Park, so this is what's gonna happen now.
- 18:16Tad Eggleston: Also, I liked it when most of the action figures were the same size, so, like, you could play Star Wars and G.I. Joe at the same time.
- 18:24e joy: Yeah, I remember my mom got to date Spider-Man, and Spider-Man was only a third of the size of Barbie, and it's like, we'll make it work, but you know.
- 18:34Tad Eggleston: I don't know, I kinda… I kinda like that power dynamic.
- 18:38e joy: That would be a good thing. It's like, you know,
- 18:42e joy: the incredible shrinking man and, like, the 50-foot woman or something.
- 18:47Tad Eggleston: Right, right!
- 18:48Tad Eggleston: I'm digging this. Diggin' this. I feel like you have a mini-comic idea there, Emily.
- 18:56e joy: I'm thinking now, maybe I should try to do a superhero comic, so to speak, you know?
- 19:03Ryan: I'd read it.
- 19:04e joy: Yeah!
- 19:05Tad Eggleston: too!
- 19:05e joy: I need to do… it would give me a really good excuse to, research a hell of a lot of comic books.
- 19:12Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, think about it, like, the first time we talked, the book that you wound up re…
- 19:19Tad Eggleston: recommending was a riff on a Batman book.
- 19:23e joy: Oh, yeah, was that, that was Ryan Alb's, oh my god, what was it? It was, like, the…
- 19:30e joy: The one where Batman gets his back broken.
- 19:33Tad Eggleston: Backbroken, yeah.
- 19:34Ryan: Yup.
- 19:35e joy: Yeah.
- 19:36e joy: And then…
- 19:37Ryan: They're fighting naked the whole time.
- 19:39e joy: Yeah, they're fighting with their ding-dongs out, so…
- 19:47e joy: Yeah, I had a great time at SpringCon. It was,
- 19:49Tad Eggleston: That sounds fun.
- 19:51Tad Eggleston: Now, I mean, I haven't actually been to SpringCon, but it sounds like, like the level of ones that I've been to before. Was it one of the cosplay-heavy ones, or lower cosplay?
- 20:04e joy: It was really, hmm, how many people… there was definitely cosplaying going on. I think my favorite that I saw was two Lex Luthors. Okay. There were a couple, and they had really good suits on. So, there were, like, two different versions of Lex Luthor, like, one had the white suit, one had the black suit.
- 20:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 20:24e joy: They dress up every year in, like, a couple's costume. It was like…
- 20:27Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 20:28e joy: These, two guys and their…
- 20:30e joy: I couldn't tell how old they are, maybe 40s or something, so…
- 20:34Tad Eggleston: Right, right, very cool.
- 20:36e joy: Lots of Spider-Men, lots of Ghostbusters. Lots of Ghostbusters.
- 20:39Tad Eggleston: Yeah, go…
- 20:40e joy: I was really surprised.
- 20:41Tad Eggleston: Ghostbusters have, like, branches all over the place.
- 20:45Tad Eggleston: They're kind of like the Star Wars cosplayers, where they're actual, like, Ghostbusters groups.
- 20:52Tad Eggleston: All over the place.
- 20:53Tad Eggleston: Some of them even do up their cars. Like, every once in a while, you'll… you'll be driving around and see, like…
- 21:03Tad Eggleston: like…
- 21:06Tad Eggleston: Honda CR-V done up as a Ghostbuster mobile. You know, completely repainted and with crazy stuff on top, and…
- 21:18e joy: I should do that to my, my old-ass Honda Civic, because…
- 21:22Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 21:22Ryan: Let's take on.
- 21:23e joy: I'm always breaking down, and I know I can't sell it for crap, but, you know, maybe I can make it into a Barbie car, you know?
- 21:30Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 21:31e joy: So…
- 21:33Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 21:34Tad Eggleston: Do we know anything about who's coming this year to insert name? Or is that still something that's forming up and to be announced later?
- 21:45e joy: We will announce the vendors on June 14th, Sunday.
- 21:48Tad Eggleston: So coming around the corner…
- 21:52Ryan: applications.
- 21:53Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 21:54e joy: Yeah, we capped it at 100 this year, because we're like, we don't want to wade through… it does take a long time to read them, you know, giving people…
- 22:02e joy: You know?
- 22:03e joy: Equal time and all that, so it's like…
- 22:07Tad Eggleston: And that's even with a tabling fee now.
- 22:10e joy: Tabling fee is only $10 for a half table and $20 for a full table.
- 22:14Tad Eggleston: I get that, but I remember talking to you the year that you had introduced the tabling fee almost entirely to make certain that, like, you could cut down on the applications that you got in, because you wouldn't be getting them from people who weren't serious, serious to put up
- 22:33Tad Eggleston: The $10 or $15, whatever it was that year.
- 22:38Ryan: Well, the problem with it free is you pick people.
- 22:42Ryan: And then, some of them don't even show up.
- 22:45e joy: Yeah.
- 22:46Ryan: Because they'd like to pay anything, or what do they care?
- 22:49Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 22:50e joy: Yeah, me and Ryan lost, some money. We… well, I know we lost money on that year, but, this year…
- 22:57Ryan: That's fun.
- 23:00Tad Eggleston: No, I, I, I mean, that can happen, and I mean, I know, there was a…
- 23:06Tad Eggleston: Comic Shop I know, and an artist I know, where they did, like…
- 23:12Tad Eggleston: Rather than just a signing, it was also a comics class for the artist's appearance, and the artist really wanted to be free.
- 23:24Tad Eggleston: So they made it free, and as a result, they wound up having no students, because they also had to cap it, so, like, people immediately signed up for it, but because it was free, didn't actually feel…
- 23:37Tad Eggleston: Like, they were gonna lose anything if they didn't… Show?
- 23:41Ryan: Exactly right, yup.
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: So, like…
- 23:47Tad Eggleston: Even if it's something that you wind up giving back in some way if they show up, oftentimes having some sort of fee
- 23:55Tad Eggleston: is just… just a way to make certain that people aren't going, oh, this might be nice, let me reserve it in case I feel like it on that day, 3 months in the future, and completely forget about it afterwards. You know, whereas if they've got even 10 bucks.
- 24:10Tad Eggleston: tied up in it, it's like, oh, I'm gonna lose my money if I don't show up, so I need to…
- 24:17Tad Eggleston: I need to go do that.
- 24:18Ryan: You gotta…
- 24:19Tad Eggleston: dumb.
- 24:19Ryan: things are worth kind of what you say they are, you know what I mean?
- 24:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 24:24Ryan: Like, the whole… the whole world of…
- 24:26Ryan: Fashion and fragrance and style is all set up on… predicated on the idea that
- 24:32Ryan: you know, price determines what people think it's worth in the first place.
- 24:38Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 24:38Ryan: I was just talking to Daria about that the other day, because she's making some posters, and wasn't quite sure what to charge. And I was like, well, they're kind of worth what you say they're worth.
- 24:48Ryan: Yeah. If you're gonna…
- 24:50Tad Eggleston: Well, I, I, I had a,
- 24:54Tad Eggleston: I was having lunch one day with, dennis Kitchen and…
- 25:03Tad Eggleston: What was the artist that we were with?
- 25:07Tad Eggleston: Dan Burr. We're all having lunch at a co-op in Milwaukee.
- 25:12Tad Eggleston: And I… and I looked up from our table, because there was a, painting is some pine trees.
- 25:20Tad Eggleston: that… I mean, it was way better than I could do.
- 25:26Tad Eggleston: But it was not something that I would have hung up in my house, right?
- 25:30Ryan: Burr, the Kings in disguise guy?
- 25:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, which Dennis, Dennis, that's one…
- 25:37Ryan: The best comics ever bought.
- 25:38Tad Eggleston: Oh, it's great. It's great.
- 25:40Ryan: That no one knows about. You want to talk.
- 25:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I forgot about it.
- 25:42Ryan: a forgotten masterpiece. That is probably one of the 10, 20 best comics I've ever read in my life.
- 25:50Tad Eggleston: That was half the reason that Dennis was introducing me, is he found out that I hadn't seen that book, and he's like, well, first of all, you need to read this, and second of all, the next time I'm in town, I'll introduce you to Dan.
- 26:03Ryan: Yeah, it's an amazing book.
- 26:05Tad Eggleston: What's the name?
- 26:07Tad Eggleston: Kings in disguise?
- 26:10e joy: Things didn't decide.
- 26:11Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 26:12Ryan: No kidding.
- 26:12Tad Eggleston: kings in…
- 26:14e joy: In disguise.
- 26:14Tad Eggleston: disguise. It's like a, depression-era… Coming of age…
- 26:23Ryan: Yeah.
- 26:26e joy: Right on.
- 26:26Tad Eggleston: Train-hopping hobo story.
- 26:33Tad Eggleston: But, it was priced at $400. So… so I looked at them, and I'm like, you guys are both professional artists. Do you think that that's a reasonable price? And they both immediately said, absolutely.
- 26:45Tad Eggleston: Fine arts is, like, it's a skill. People can't do it.
- 26:50Tad Eggleston: Like, you would never dream of paying your plumber less than $100 an hour.
- 26:56Tad Eggleston: Because they had to learn how to do that, and you don't know how to do that. Do I think that that painting could have taken somebody 4 hours?
- 27:04Tad Eggleston: Absolutely. Is it my cup of tea? No. But can I imagine a million living rooms and a million people that would go, oh, this is what will bring my living room together? Sure. And if you overprice, you can always negotiate down.
- 27:21Tad Eggleston: You know, you can't really negotiate up if you realize you made it too cheap.
- 27:27Tad Eggleston: I'm like, okay, this is what I need to tell my artist friends now, because I don't think I've met a community of people who…
- 27:38Tad Eggleston: I don't want to say value their work less, because I think that they value it, they just value it in non-monetary ways.
- 27:46Tad Eggleston: I don't think I've known a group of people that, like.
- 27:51Tad Eggleston: Value their work in exchange for money, or their presence in exchange for money.
- 27:57Tad Eggleston: Less than most of the comic book people I know. Things like, oh, I'm busy this month, so let me shut down my Patreon while I take care of my mom, and it's like, well…
- 28:08Tad Eggleston: But do you need the money while you're taking care of your mom? Yeah, but I'm not gonna post much, and I'm like…
- 28:13Tad Eggleston: I don't think your patrons care.
- 28:16Tad Eggleston: I don't… I don't think they're…
- 28:18e joy: Yeah.
- 28:19Tad Eggleston: I don't think they're giving you money for what they get back on a day-to-day basis. I think they're giving you money for what they get back in terms of your long-term output.
- 28:33e joy: I asked my Patreon… patron… Patreon patrons, like, I'm… I'm like, what do you want? Like, you know, what should I have more of? And they're just like, I don't know, we just like you. Yeah.
- 28:44Ryan: Yup. Oh, God, yeah, all the time. Every time I've asked people in person, you know.
- 28:51e joy: Yup.
- 28:51Ryan: who subscribed to my site, and I'll be like, yeah, what do you want me to write more about? Oh, hell, I don't care, write about whatever you want. And I do that, too. If I've got something, like, I've had a couple times here and there where shit's going on at work, and I just don't have much time to write, and I'll just let, you know, I'll post something saying, you know, I'll be back in a week or something, and…
- 29:11Ryan: It all works out, nobody complains.
- 29:14Ryan: You know?
- 29:15Tad Eggleston: I mean, and that's what I tell anybody who's even thinking of shutting off the payment side of their Patreon, Substack, whatever newsletter, is like…
- 29:25Tad Eggleston: send out the letter to your… to your subscribers to explain the situation and see what they say. My hunch is, they're gonna tell you, no, please keep taking my money.
- 29:40Ryan: I mean, most of these… most of these are people giving you 2 or 3 bucks, you know?
- 29:45Ryan: And…
- 29:45Tad Eggleston: And even when they're giving you more, like… I mean, I… I give money to a couple of people in part because I do want the stuff that they send out every month, right? But if I missed a month, I wouldn't feel like I needed the money back.
- 30:01Ryan: Right.
- 30:02e joy: I don't care, like…
- 30:04Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 30:06Tad Eggleston: You know.
- 30:08Ryan: able to, I do think, Because that's one feedback I've gotten from people consistently over the years.
- 30:16Ryan: is that they do like the fact that I keep it up pretty regularly, and say that, well, compared to most, you really do post a lot more, because there are.
- 30:26Tad Eggleston: No.
- 30:26Ryan: that are pretty quiet.
- 30:28Tad Eggleston: Right. Regularity is a good thing, and, and…
- 30:33Tad Eggleston: keeping people apprised on just the basics, you know, even if your regularity winds up being, you come in once a week to go, I am still slammed with life and kids and trying to meet my deadline, I wish that I could give you more, here's a cool picture, see you next week.
- 30:51Ryan: Yup.
- 30:53e joy: Yeah, speaking of Patreon, I went to a comics reading on Friday with an artist who is really good at Patreon, and it was a very good comics reading.
- 31:06e joy: And I want to, like, tell you about their book, because they just released, like, I think maybe their first book? It's really good. It's called, Cream Thing in His Golden Year by Sam Hensley.
- 31:19Ryan: That was a good-looking book.
- 31:21e joy: Yeah, Ryan, I showed it… I've seen.
- 31:23Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:24e joy: And it's… at first, I didn't quite know what it was about. I, I helped my friend, Sam by, hooking them up with a venue, and then I…
- 31:36e joy: I was like, I should probably, like, promote this, and I was like, it's about a lamb made out of butter, that lives in the woods, and I was kind of right, but actually, it's not… there's so much more to it. It's like…
- 31:49e joy: And the drawings are just, like, crazy.
- 31:52e joy: late.
- 31:53e joy: I think it's all, I don't even know… it's, like, paintings, and, like, watercolor, and it's about this, like, weird creature that, like, dies over and over again because of a curse, but also doesn't feel any pain, and, like…
- 32:07e joy: Really cool drawings.
- 32:09Tad Eggleston: It's really cool looking.
- 32:10e joy: Yeah, just.
- 32:12Tad Eggleston: Unfortunately, our listeners will have to go find the book, so announce it again, so they know how to go find it.
- 32:19e joy: So this book is called… and this is all one… well, okay, Cream Thing, which is all one word, cream plus thing, and it's called Cream Thing in His Golden Year, and you can get it, from Sam Hensley.
- 32:33e joy: And, she…
- 32:36Tad Eggleston: It's like samsketchbook.bigcartel.com.
- 32:40e joy: You got it, I had that URL already, and you got it perfect.
- 32:45Tad Eggleston: The gorgeous, the gorgeous thing about, about Google, when it works…
- 32:49e joy: Yeah.
- 32:50e joy: And…
- 32:52Tad Eggleston: That was my exciting thing this last week. I discovered that, like.
- 32:56Tad Eggleston: You don't have to put podcasts in with 22 panels anymore.
- 33:00e joy: Nice.
- 33:01Tad Eggleston: If you just put 22 panels in, we will come up on the various services, and for that matter, my cat…
- 33:08Tad Eggleston: Is the fourth picture.
- 33:11Tad Eggleston: after two different versions of Wally Woods, 22 Panels That Always Works, and Mike Avon Omings.
- 33:18Tad Eggleston: homage to Wally Wood's 22 Panels That Always Work, you get Eddie knocking the microphone over when you Google 22 panels. And I'm like, okay, that's something.
- 33:31Tad Eggleston: Now, where's the money?
- 33:33e joy: Yeah, exactly, right?
- 33:35e joy: When you Google me, the first thing you get is a, somewhat medium review of one of my books by Robert Clough, or something. Am I saying that right? Yeah. Clough?
- 33:46Ryan: I'm Club, yeah, or Cloud. He goes… I think people say either one.
- 33:50e joy: Oh, yeah. Okay.
- 33:51e joy: And then the rest of it is…
- 33:53Ryan: and plow.
- 33:58e joy: Oh yeah, I have a new zine out.
- 34:01Tad Eggleston: Yeah! You went little!
- 34:03e joy: Yeah, I went, like…
- 34:04Tad Eggleston: it.
- 34:04e joy: Yeah, it's easier to ship, and it fits the format, because I was doing four panel squares, and so I made it, like, almost a coffee table or a book that you would have sitting by the toilet, maybe? You know, just, like, something for light reading, but .
- 34:19Tad Eggleston: That's a legit thing, yeah.
- 34:22e joy: Yeah.
- 34:23e joy: Oh, I gotta set up an online store. I'll do that later, but…
- 34:27Tad Eggleston: I think my wife just does hers through Ko-Fi, because then the payment and the stuff are all together.
- 34:34e joy: Oh, yeah. Well, maybe I could…
- 34:38e joy: Yeah, I do have a Patreon, maybe I could have that as just… I was gonna send it to everyone.
- 34:42Tad Eggleston: I think they have an ability to do…
- 34:46Tad Eggleston: do store setups more on Patreon than they used to.
- 34:50Ryan: Yeah, they're working on all kinds of shit.
- 34:52Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 34:53e joy: Ryan, I had an idea, like…
- 34:56e joy: Have you ever thought about making, like, a collected, like, zine or, like, book of your reviews?
- 35:02Ryan: I'll do it before I die, you know, one of these years.
- 35:07e joy: Well, I mean, just start out with a little one, and then release, like, issues.
- 35:11Ryan: Yeah, there's so much stuff from so many years.
- 35:14Ryan: I'd really have to cut down and determine what the best of it was.
- 35:18Ryan: But at some point, I'm gonna do it.
- 35:22e joy: Right on. Well, if you need formatting or printing help.
- 35:26Ryan: Oh, I know who to call!
- 35:33Tad Eggleston: So, what has been exciting the two of you in comics this year?
- 35:43e joy: Seeing more people get into comics that maybe,
- 35:47e joy: have not been into them before. Like, when I was at the SpringCon, there were, like, you know,
- 35:55e joy: It wasn't just kids drawing on the table, it was like, you know, like.
- 36:00e joy: The comic book collector guys, but then it was also, like, grandmas and stuff, and, like…
- 36:05e joy: I think even my mom has read a couple of zines at this point, and just seeing people get into self-publishing, like, that guy, like, the whole family that was at that table, and like, they all… like, the kids had their own comic books, and there were several tables that had, like, children with their parents, and, like, the kids were selling, like.
- 36:23e joy: pictures of birds, or like… it was just really cool to see that, because I want to hear from different voices, that I maybe have not, heard a lot of, or maybe I didn't know where to look for them before.
- 36:39Tad Eggleston: I am always pleased to see a wider swath.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: of people.
- 36:45Tad Eggleston: Getting into comics.
- 36:47Tad Eggleston: It's not just middle-aged white dudes anymore.
- 36:50Ryan: Yup.
- 36:51Tad Eggleston: And that's… Burtoning.
- 36:55e joy: Yeah, comics is for everyone.
- 36:58Tad Eggleston: I mean, really, all storytelling should be for everyone, but like…
- 37:02Tad Eggleston: for so long, particularly in the Ameri… in the United States market, people were…
- 37:11Tad Eggleston: Blown away at the idea that, like.
- 37:14Tad Eggleston: Wait a minute, you mean comics aren't… aren't just superheroes?
- 37:19Tad Eggleston: But, but to see, to see it, like, expand further.
- 37:25Tad Eggleston: Where more and more people who didn't even realize they were readers, because they're not great at reading prose. But…
- 37:32Tad Eggleston: that doesn't mean they don't crave storytelling or information or whatnot, and they'll discover the comic that speaks to them, and now suddenly they're a reader, and sometimes they wind up reading more prose too, but they definitely wind up reading more comics, because it's like, oh, this is what I feel like I was supposed to get out of books, but…
- 37:47Tad Eggleston: Never managed to capture personally.
- 37:51Tad Eggleston: Huh?
- 37:52e joy: I gotta give credit to, like, Dogman, that's, like.
- 37:56Tad Eggleston: Definitely.
- 37:57e joy: Yeah, I mean, I read Capital…
- 37:58Tad Eggleston: Reyna Telgemeyer deserves all the awards, too.
- 38:02e joy: Yeah, of course.
- 38:03Tad Eggleston: You know, for that matter, I like…
- 38:07Tad Eggleston: with her book with Scott McCloud last year, the Cartoonist Club, I wonder if seeing, like, the kids making their own comics for sale, how much of that is driven by… there's literally a book that you can buy at Target that involves
- 38:24Tad Eggleston: Middle schoolers making their own comics and then selling them at a minicon.
- 38:29Tad Eggleston: I've…
- 38:30e joy: I actually haven't read that book, it's on my list, but like…
- 38:33Tad Eggleston: It's so good!
- 38:35e joy: It's… It's right up my alley.
- 38:38Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, it… it's… it's like the… the easy reader version of understanding comics, but it's also, a Raina Telgemeyer, you are seeing…
- 38:51Tad Eggleston: You know, yes, life is hard, but you're not a lone middle grade book on top of that.
- 38:57Tad Eggleston: Right? So it, like, hits all of the buttons.
- 39:01Tad Eggleston: It's… One of my favorite books from last year.
- 39:06Tad Eggleston: And again, you can pick it up at your average big box store, and most of your
- 39:12Tad Eggleston: Better comic book shops. Right.
- 39:16Tad Eggleston: But, like, if you don't know where the closest comic shop is, or you're still afraid to go into the comic shop, you can generally find Raina Telgemeier at Walmart, or Target, or whatever your local equivalent is.
- 39:34Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Yeah.
- 39:37e joy: Or the library. Library.
- 39:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, yes, libraries… I mean…
- 39:43Tad Eggleston: I don't… like, I try to talk about it more. Libraries have embraced comics so…
- 39:50Tad Eggleston: Wholeheartedly lately that most people have access to…
- 39:57Tad Eggleston: More comics than they can imagine.
- 40:01Tad Eggleston: through their local library system. Whether it's in their local branch or just available on, on, like, quick interlibrary loan, like, almost any time you bring up a book.
- 40:13Tad Eggleston: No matter how long out of print it is, you can, like, go to your local library's website and have it at your library within a week.
- 40:20Tad Eggleston: It's like, oh, now I do get to read this thing that… Hasn't been around forever.
- 40:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah, libraries and comics are amazing.
- 40:32e joy: And if you tell your library to, like, order a book by an author.
- 40:36Tad Eggleston: They will.
- 40:36e joy: you can't afford to read. That's money that goes to that.
- 40:40e joy: You know… Right.
- 40:41Tad Eggleston: Hopefully.
- 40:46Tad Eggleston: That's right.
- 40:47Tad Eggleston: Ryan, anything cool for you lately?
- 40:50Ryan: Oh, man, I'll tell ya, right… now, I am, really enjoying that,
- 41:04Ryan: Hangman Never Loses thing I told you about, and I've also been,
- 41:09Ryan: just starting a new Kim Deich book, How I Make Comics, so…
- 41:13Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:13e joy: Hold on.
- 41:14Tad Eggleston: I've got a copy of that.
- 41:15Ryan: What's up.
- 41:16e joy: That one about…
- 41:17Ryan: I mean, that's guaranteed to be good.
- 41:19Tad Eggleston: That's one that's kind of self-explanatory.
- 41:23Ryan: Yeah, I mean…
- 41:24Tad Eggleston: How I make comics is about how he makes comics.
- 41:27Ryan: How he makes comics.
- 41:29Ryan: And then,
- 41:30Ryan: Andrew Alexander over there at Cram has really been publishing a lot of good stuff. He's got a new collection of strips by Drew Luhrmann, who's one of the great cartoonists working these days, and he's got his own,
- 41:44Ryan: his own, autobio Zine, I think it was…
- 41:48Tad Eggleston: AndyAlexandi.com, also Cram…
- 41:52Ryan: And there's a new issue of Cram. These are all really gorgeous rhizo-printed, heavy cardstock-type, publications.
- 42:01Ryan: And then he did one from Audra Stang not too long ago, published a new thing of hers, and .
- 42:09e joy: That was Valley Valley, right?
- 42:11Ryan: Yep, and then, he's been doing a lot of, stuff with a cartoonist named Nick Bunch, whose, stuff is all really good, so I'm loving everything that's coming out of Cram.
- 42:21Ryan: But so far this year, These standout comic
- 42:28Ryan: And it's a little, like, 10-12 page mini.
- 42:31Ryan: by an artist I still really don't know anything about, named Emily Zimmer, and I think I reviewed this one, I can't remember, called Vortex.
- 42:41Ryan: And this…
- 42:42e joy: I want to get that.
- 42:43Ryan: Yeah, this thing has… now, content-wise, it's nowhere near as,
- 42:49Ryan: unbelievably depraved, but it has the same energy to me as Rory Hayes-type stuff.
- 42:57Ryan: And if you think there's a higher compliment than that, coming from me, there is not. You know what I mean?
- 43:04Ryan: This thing really feels like the early Rory Hayes?
- 43:08Tad Eggleston: You ha- you have reviewed it, in fact…
- 43:12Tad Eggleston: When I Google it, your review comes up before the ability to buy it at Domino.
- 43:18Ryan: Okay, yeah, I doubt anybody else has reviewed the thing.
- 43:23Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 43:24Ryan: But, you know, it's like a little $5 thing, and it is everything I love about comics distilled into one, compact package. I can… I can read that. I mean, I don't have time to, but…
- 43:39Ryan: I could read that 8, 10, 12 times in a row. That thing is just incredible. This is… that is everything you want about DIY comics in one thing. If there is one
- 43:51Ryan: Functional example of what makes this
- 43:54Ryan: Beleaguered medium of ours, so unique.
- 43:58Ryan: And, you know, able to do things nothing else can.
- 44:03Ryan: That's it, right there. I don't even know who this Emily Zimmer is, I think she's out of the Bay Area or something. But that thing is incredible.
- 44:12Ryan: That will single-heartedly restore your faith in, The whole comics medium.
- 44:20Tad Eggleston: Well, but I never lost faith in the whole comics medium.
- 44:24Ryan: Well, right, but you know what I mean, like,
- 44:28Ryan: You know how, you can look around and feel like, you know, stuff is a little too, like, who's doing their own thing that hasn't been done before, kind of thing?
- 44:39Ryan: And that's the perfect example.
- 44:43Ryan: That there is still new things to be done. There we go, that's a better way of saying it.
- 44:48Ryan: that there's still new things to be done that have not been done before, and it's because you haven't done them before, you know what I mean? There's a story in everybody that hasn't been put out there yet, and some people just put pen to paper and do it, and that's the best reason to make comics there is.
- 45:06Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 45:07Tad Eggleston: it appears… that… It was printed at the Oakland Library.
- 45:14Ryan: Yeah, that sounds right.
- 45:15e joy: Yeah.
- 45:20Ryan: I'm gonna… At scratch.
- 45:22Tad Eggleston: fever.
- 45:23Ryan: I'm an absolute evan… yeah. I'm an absolute evangelist for that thing. It just is everything I like in…
- 45:31Ryan: 10, 12, whatever it is, pages.
- 45:39Ryan: So, everybody out there, Vortex, I think Domino's probably still… hopefully he still has some copies.
- 45:49Tad Eggleston: Well, and if you go to CatchScratchfeever.org…
- 45:55Tad Eggleston: You can buy it directly from Her big…
- 46:00Ryan: You got anything else?
- 46:02Tad Eggleston: It looks like a book called Wallow?
- 46:06Tad Eggleston: And a book called Cattle Mutilation That's Sold Out.
- 46:10Ryan: Fuck.
- 46:11Ryan: Sold out, huh?
- 46:13e joy: Maybe, maybe, she has an email, and we can get that cattle mutilation somehow.
- 46:19Tad Eggleston: I, I, I…
- 46:20Ryan: Yeah, yeah, I gotta get ahold of her.
- 46:21Tad Eggleston: I'm not gonna read her email on the podcast, but it is at her Instagram page.
- 46:32e joy: Okay, cool.
- 46:35Tad Eggleston: So… so, so.
- 46:37Ryan: Oh, and…
- 46:38Tad Eggleston: Definitely, definitely findable.
- 46:41Ryan: Another, thing that's going on is the grate.
- 46:45Ryan: Steve Lafler has some new stuff out.
- 46:49Ryan: Including a collaboration book with Paul Theroux.
- 46:53Ryan: called Crazy For You that was really good.
- 46:55Tad Eggleston: I have that.
- 46:56Ryan: Yeah, and then, his own self-published collection of his 1956, which is a fantastic little story. Steve is a fantastic cartoonist who's been around forever now, and just…
- 47:11Ryan: It keeps on…
- 47:13Ryan: you know, every new project really is impressive. I mean, I've loved his stuff since the days of Buzzard.
- 47:25Ryan: Oh.
- 47:26Ryan: Look at that.
- 47:27Tad Eggleston: Hell yeah.
- 47:27Ryan: I'm gonna order her, wallow right now.
- 47:30Tad Eggleston: There you go. See, here I am, I'm even managing to sell books to Ryan Carey during a podcast.
- 47:37Ryan: Yup.
- 47:38Tad Eggleston: I didn't think that was possible. I thought you were always on top of it before I was, or were like, yeah, Tad, that's cool that you still like that, but .
- 47:49Ryan: No, you're not!
- 47:53Ryan: you're far more plugged into the everyday comings and goings, I think, than I am.
- 47:59Tad Eggleston: Well, no, I know, but I'm plugged into everyday comings and goings from the big publisher that, like…
- 48:07Tad Eggleston: I know you well enough to know that you don't frown on them as much as it seems like for anybody that reads your Patreon, but, like, I always… I always laugh that, like, you're willing to speak to me, given the way you refer to half the comics I love on Patreon. Well…
- 48:27Ryan: I don't,
- 48:28Ryan: I don't, disrespect the work that goes into, oh, look at this thing of hers, I love brutal death metal.
- 48:36Ryan: Man, I like this girl. This is great stuff.
- 48:39Tad Eggleston: I feel like she makes her own music, too. If you click on the music, you go to her Bandcamp page.
- 48:44e joy: We should ask Emily Zimmer to table that insert name.
- 48:47Ryan: You know we should, the older sheep.
- 48:49Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, you'd have to get her out from Oakland, it sounds like.
- 48:54e joy: Well, our fundraiser's going really well, so maybe it's fun.
- 48:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah,
- 48:59Ryan: Yeah!
- 49:00Tad Eggleston: There you go.
- 49:02Ryan: I'm gonna tell you something. I respect the work those people do, putting out these things that I don't read. There's an audience for it. What I don't like is,
- 49:14Ryan: what I don't like is the business aspect, but I understand that's just.
- 49:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, I don't like a lot of the big business aspect either, which is also why I tend way more towards…
- 49:27Tad Eggleston: even when I'm in the Wednesday comic arena.
- 49:32Tad Eggleston: I tend way towards more… like…
- 49:37Tad Eggleston: the independent presses, and often even more towards the mad caves and onis of the world than the image and dark horses of the world, that sort of thing.
- 49:48Ryan: Yeah, Dark Horse is trying to unionize now, though.
- 49:51Tad Eggleston: Well, and, not just trying.
- 49:54Tad Eggleston: Dark Horse has voluntarily recognized their union. Oh, did they? So I was proud of that, yeah.
- 50:01Ryan: That's what I saw. Yeah, the last I saw, that was still… oh, that is great, because Image never did that.
- 50:08Tad Eggleston: Right, so the next huge step is, like, how does collective bargaining go, obviously? But…
- 50:18Tad Eggleston: But it does appear that, that, that…
- 50:22Tad Eggleston: Dark Horse has chosen to… voluntarily… .
- 50:32Ryan: That's fantastic.
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 50:36e joy: Can I recommend 2 more comic books?
- 50:40Tad Eggleston: Of course!
- 50:41e joy: I would… I want to recommend a book that, I think it was Drawn in Quarterly just put out, from Cedar Van Tassel, called Apple Guy and Beefwood.
- 50:54Tad Eggleston: Tyler was a big, big fan of that one.
- 50:57e joy: And I think Cedar is coming to insert name, but I have to confirm with him that he can come.
- 51:01Tad Eggleston: Oh, that'd be cool.
- 51:03e joy: Because he applied, and I'm like, yeah, of course!
- 51:06Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 51:08e joy: I used to…
- 51:09Ryan: Did you put that out?
- 51:11e joy: Huh?
- 51:13Tad Eggleston: We're running quarterly.
- 51:14e joy: Really, yeah.
- 51:16e joy: It's like a nice hardcover book.
- 51:18Ryan: Check that out.
- 51:20Ryan: I'm gonna have to check that out.
- 51:22e joy: I also… I haven't read this one yet, like, I haven't finished it, but I started reading it, and it's,
- 51:29e joy: Larry Harris and Shay Merck did a book called, and I think it got nominated for an.
- 51:35Tad Eggleston: Oh, the Making Nonfiction comics, yeah.
- 51:37e joy: Yeah, because I really want to start doing… I have all these ideas of things I want to start doing, because, like, I've been doing auto-bio and diary for a long time, and it's like… I'd kind of like to explore some other genres, but, journalism comics…
- 51:53e joy: You know, that seems, like, extremely… Turtle drink.
- 51:57Tad Eggleston: And I always appreciate it when the guides to making comics are comics themselves.
- 52:04e joy: Yep.
- 52:07e joy: Also, on a non-comics note,
- 52:12e joy: And Ryan is a fan of this video distribution company as well. There's, are they a… what is vinegar syndrome?
- 52:23e joy: They're a distribution.
- 52:24Ryan: No, no.
- 52:24e joy: company.
- 52:24Ryan: Blu-ray label.
- 52:26e joy: They're a Blu-ray label.
- 52:28e joy: Yeah, I've been watching.
- 52:30Ryan: row 2.
- 52:31e joy: Yeah, I've been watching movies that Vinegar Syndrome and Bleeding Skull have put out, and a lot of, like, these, like, shot-on-video, like, shot-on-VHS, like, bad horror movies.
- 52:43e joy: And, like, I think I like movies, again, after not watching them for a couple of years.
- 52:50e joy: like, I like, I like… I don't… I don't know, I like seeing people, like, trying to…
- 52:56Tad Eggleston: syndrome, what did you say was the other one?
- 52:59e joy: Bleeding skull.
- 53:04e joy: And Vinegar Syndrome is opening a store in, Minneapolis.
- 53:15Ryan: Yeah, but when?
- 53:17e joy: Yeah, I know, it might already be open,
- 53:21e joy: It's in Dinkytown, which is by the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.
- 53:30Tad Eggleston: I mean, one of the reasons that I, that I, like, am more interested in this than I normally would be is that,
- 53:40Tad Eggleston: Jim Terry recently made a movie that, to my knowledge, has been screened
- 53:44Tad Eggleston: Three, maybe four times, but I bet…
- 53:47Ryan: That guy is a good… cartoonist.
- 53:49e joy: We should have him. I'd love to have him there.
- 53:52Tad Eggleston: He made a fantastic movie.
- 53:54Tad Eggleston: So… Yeah. What's it not?
- 54:01Ryan: That is a good.
- 54:02Tad Eggleston: It's called… it's called Shank.
- 54:05e joy: Okay, sweet. I only have a…
- 54:08Tad Eggleston: There's a… there's a short trailer, like, a 40-second trailer for it at Wounded But… his, Wounded But Dangerous YouTube page.
- 54:20e joy: Nice.
- 54:20Tad Eggleston: Here, I'll find it and drop the link.
- 54:30Tad Eggleston: But actually, I was, there's a… theater…
- 54:39Tad Eggleston: the… the… in Minneapolis that I… that I saw…
- 54:45Tad Eggleston: while I was up there, that looks like the type…
- 54:49Tad Eggleston: That might be willing to show something like this.
- 54:52e joy: The Trilon?
- 54:55Tad Eggleston: Maybe? Give me a second.
- 54:57Tad Eggleston: Is it right by a coffee shop?
- 55:00e joy: Yep, the Trilon Micro Cinema. I did a poster for them once.
- 55:05Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:06Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 55:07Tad Eggleston: And… and I know somebody who… who knows their projectionist.
- 55:11Tad Eggleston: So…
- 55:13e joy: I think I know, who you might know who knows the projectionists.
- 55:16Tad Eggleston: That's entirely possible, but, like, since we're still recording, I don't want to say too many things.
- 55:23Ryan: No, I hear you there.
- 55:25Tad Eggleston: Because all of this is still in the dream stages, but, like, it might be something, like, if we do things right, like, set up a screening for the Saturday night before…
- 55:37Tad Eggleston: Insert name, have him at the fest.
- 55:40e joy: Because I also…
- 55:43e joy: Shaheen Beardsley did an oldboy movie of his character, his, like, take on superhero characters, and he made his own, like, movie of his own character, and I think he acts as the main character. And I was like, yeah, what if we do, like, a comic book movie screening?
- 56:02e joy: like…
- 56:05Tad Eggleston: There's the link to the trailer on YouTube. Actually, I mean, Shank…
- 56:10Tad Eggleston: Shank was a trailer that he made with a friend 20 years ago for a movie that didn't exist, but then it kind of niggled around in the back of his brain, and, like, last year, he was a little bit burned out on making comics and looking for something else creative to do, and realized that he hadn't spent a lot of time with that buddy in a while, and…
- 56:30Tad Eggleston: Called him up and said, what if we…
- 56:33Tad Eggleston: What if we made more of this?
- 56:35Tad Eggleston: And, like… All Gonzo shooting, no permits acquired, ever.
- 56:41Tad Eggleston: You know, so I was… one of the Q&As I was at, somebody asked what the most dangerous shot they seemed was, and they're like, literally any of the ones with fake guns, because it meant that we took fake guns out on city streets in Chicago without a permit.
- 57:00Tad Eggleston: It's like, take it out, shoot the scene as fast as possible, and ditch it!
- 57:05e joy: Nice.
- 57:07Tad Eggleston: But, but yeah, no, I forgot.
- 57:09Ryan: rulemaking.
- 57:10Tad Eggleston: I, I fir- I forget who, like, the, the first… the first,
- 57:16Tad Eggleston: tagline that I heard somebody come up for it was, if Monty Python made John Wick for no money.
- 57:25e joy: Nice. Sold in the.
- 57:29Tad Eggleston: after taking my son to it, I pitched him a different one, and he thinks that mine is, like…
- 57:39Tad Eggleston: at least as good of a descriptor. I said, if Clerks and Ella Mariachi had a demon baby, its name would be Shank.
- 57:48e joy: I also like that description.
- 57:52Tad Eggleston: You know, because it is, it's zero budget, but it's still an action movie, and when they can't make the action look great, they lean into the fact that they don't try to ignore that, like, some stuff look ridiculous, they lean into the ridiculousness.
- 58:08Tad Eggleston: For that matter, like, lack of choreography is often made up For my fantastic sound effects.
- 58:19e joy: Worth it, yes!
- 58:20Tad Eggleston: You know, I mean, I… I seriously, I want this movie to be distributed just because I want to be able to watch it over and over again at home. You know, I'm… I'm totally autistic, and like…
- 58:33Tad Eggleston: I like… with movies, I like comics, like music, whatnot. I like more movies than I don't like, etc, but then there are certain things that I can just read over and over again, or watch over and over again, or listen to over and over again, and this is totally a movie that I could watch
- 58:50Tad Eggleston: Easily, once a week.
- 58:52Tad Eggleston: For, like, a long, long time. And probably, you know, forever at 2 or 3 times a month.
- 59:00Tad Eggleston: or 2 or 3 times a year. Like, I don't… I don't think there's been a year in my life where I haven't watched the Return of the Jedi at least 3 times.
- 59:08Tad Eggleston: Shank feels like it would be in that category for me if…
- 59:12Tad Eggleston: I was ever able to watch it at my whim, rather than just the…
- 59:18Tad Eggleston: Occasional times that it gets played.
- 59:21Tad Eggleston: Various places.
- 59:25e joy: Yeah, that would be sick. I wanna see this movie really bad now.
- 59:29Tad Eggleston: Well… I already have been… working gym.
- 59:35Tad Eggleston: To, to, to try to…
- 59:37Tad Eggleston: to let him help me get it more places. Or at the very least, let him get it… let him help me get it into…
- 59:44Tad Eggleston: We've got a big screen TV at the comp shop.
- 59:47Tad Eggleston: that I… that I do stuff for, along with couches. So I'm like, at the very least, let us do the first, like, living room screening, the public living room screening. I've seen it on a… on, like, a full theater screen with you, I've seen it on, like.
- 1:00:01Tad Eggleston: A classroom speak…
- 1:00:03Tad Eggleston: your, like, theater screen with you. So, let's do the next one, the, the, the, the, the public living room screen.
- 1:00:13e joy: Nice.
- 1:00:15Ryan: Have you been to the store that, Daria's working at?
- 1:00:18Tad Eggleston: I have.
- 1:00:20Ryan: It looks cool.
- 1:00:22Tad Eggleston: It is, it's very cool. Not big,
- 1:00:27Tad Eggleston: You know, I actually… the one time I've been there so far was when she was doing her…
- 1:00:33Tad Eggleston: Super exclusive con.
- 1:00:36Tad Eggleston: Aww.
- 1:00:38Tad Eggleston: So, I had a limited amount of time that I could spend there, because…
- 1:00:43Tad Eggleston: like, moving was difficult, and I get claustrophobic.
- 1:00:48Tad Eggleston: That's…
- 1:00:48Ryan: Joe looked like it went over pretty well, though.
- 1:00:50Tad Eggleston: It went over really well.
- 1:00:55Tad Eggleston: No, I was a big fan of the show, it was just… tight.
- 1:01:00e joy: But it happens.
- 1:01:01Ryan: I think it's right at odd mark, too.
- 1:01:05Tad Eggleston: I believe it. That's… I mean, I come up for you guys' show every time, and I'll make a… make a spin-through once to try to look at stuff before I start buying, and then I spend about half an hour outside, or wherever there's space to, like, breathe, and then…
- 1:01:24Tad Eggleston: I make the targeted run-through, where it's like, okay, I wanted to go talk to this table more, I wanted to go talk to that table more. Okay, I need to take a break. Now I want to go talk to that table more, and that table more. I do this for big cons, too. I'm not good with…
- 1:01:41Tad Eggleston: Concerts and baseball games are the only times that I can handle
- 1:01:46Tad Eggleston: Being in a large crowd of people for an extended period of time.
- 1:01:51Ryan: That's beautiful.
- 1:01:51Tad Eggleston: Because I have a completely different focal point.
- 1:01:54Ryan: We had a nice amount of space at, squirrel House, but .
- 1:01:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:02:00Ryan: The guy is, they closed that spot, you know.
- 1:02:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, it sounds like he's turning it into his own house, so… Yeah, the guy's turning…
- 1:02:10Ryan: into a house for him and his wife.
- 1:02:11Tad Eggleston: I don't… I don't know if I'd want to have a con in my house.
- 1:02:16Ryan: I wouldn't.
- 1:02:16Tad Eggleston: So… I, I get that.
- 1:02:21Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 1:02:22Ryan: But, Odd Mart is a much more central location.
- 1:02:26Tad Eggleston: Yeah. It looked like a good location to me.
- 1:02:29Tad Eggleston: And, like, the back… I mean, they had the back door open, so I was able to see where…
- 1:02:36Tad Eggleston: where you guys are gonna be set up. It's a decent-sized space, you know, it's not as big as Squirrel House, but it's…
- 1:02:43Tad Eggleston: It's… it's not… It's not at all nothing.
- 1:02:47Ryan: Yeah, and they have their own show that they put on every year, too. It was just, what, a weekend or two ago, Emily?
- 1:02:53e joy: Yeah, it was May 23rd and 24th, they had, flop, exclamation points, and Sally Madden ran some programming.
- 1:03:03Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 1:03:04e joy: Yeah, I, I, she asked me and my friend Mergo to do an improv comics, so I had never done improv, but we did, like, live drawing, and.
- 1:03:14Tad Eggleston: Oh, sweet!
- 1:03:15e joy: I was the moderator, and…
- 1:03:17Tad Eggleston: Sweet!
- 1:03:18e joy: It was really fun, I,
- 1:03:21e joy: It was really fun. yeah, so we eventually… it, devolved or evolved into me and Mergo making 4 panel comics in 3 minutes, which really tests your.
- 1:03:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:03:37e joy: So, yeah.
- 1:03:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:03:40e joy: It was really fun.
- 1:03:43e joy: And there was a lovely tribute to, the late Diana Green.
- 1:03:50Tad Eggleston: I hate it when we have to say the late.
- 1:03:52e joy: Yeah.
- 1:03:54Tad Eggleston: We lost Marjane Satrapi this week, too.
- 1:03:57Ryan: Yeah.
- 1:03:58e joy: That was so sad.
- 1:04:01e joy: That is so sad. There was a guy at SpringCon who was carrying around a foam board with, like, the Persepolis drawings on it, and it said, Rest in Peace, Marjane Satropi. And then I ended up trading comics with him, and he had really good comics, so that was cool.
- 1:04:17Tad Eggleston: Cool.
- 1:04:18e joy: Yeah, but .
- 1:04:19Tad Eggleston: And I mean, just going back to Daria, I know that Marjane was a huge influence on Daria.
- 1:04:25Ryan: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:26Tad Eggleston: Lighting to do comics.
- 1:04:28Tad Eggleston: So…
- 1:04:31Tad Eggleston: I do want time to breathe between now and my next podcast, so I need to… I need to roll us into closing questions. I have a new one since the last time you guys were on, so you're gonna have the standard… the standard, standard closing question
- 1:04:51Tad Eggleston: But before that, I'm gonna start with,
- 1:04:55Tad Eggleston: I've been doing this podcast for… for…
- 1:04:59Tad Eggleston: a little less than 5 years now, and I feel like I've entered the Twilight Zone. My life has… has changed almost
- 1:05:08Tad Eggleston: completely in amazing ways. You know, the people that… I've made more friends in my 40s than I did in my teens.
- 1:05:16Tad Eggleston: And, and, and…
- 1:05:20Tad Eggleston: like, from all over the country, all sorts of people, some of them people that, like, I used to only see their names in, like, some of my favorite things, and now I text with them about baseball, right?
- 1:05:34Tad Eggleston: I've been to cons where people recognized me, I've been to…
- 1:05:40Tad Eggleston: You know, and that's just a stinky podcaster who, like, I'm only certain that my mom and brother listen, right?
- 1:05:48Tad Eggleston: I've discovered that everybody in comics, no matter how big or small.
- 1:05:52Tad Eggleston: has experiences like this and has forever. That thing where even… even having experienced it, there's that little part of them that pinches themselves and goes, did that really happen?
- 1:06:06Tad Eggleston: How… how did this become my life? So I've started collecting those stories. Tell me… tell me a time in your time in… in and around comics where something happened that you… you still, like, kind of look at it and go, oh wow, that was… that was me in that story, and that's amazing.
- 1:06:28e joy: Hmm… let me think.
- 1:06:34e joy: Oh, I know one! Getting to meet John Porcellino, and then trading comics with him, and then he tabled at our con, like, 2 years in a row. That was so cool.
- 1:06:45Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 1:06:46Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that's… John's a cool guy, I need to get to know him better.
- 1:06:53e joy: Super nice guy.
- 1:06:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, really, really nice guy.
- 1:06:59Tad Eggleston: Ryan, you've been around forever. I'm not calling you old, but you are.
- 1:07:04Ryan: I'm old.
- 1:07:08Ryan: You know…
- 1:07:09Tad Eggleston: What's your crazy story.
- 1:07:10Ryan: You know, for me, I've had…
- 1:07:16Ryan: I was just telling Emily about one, the other night.
- 1:07:22Ryan: Speaking of SpringCon was when, a few years back, when Howard Chaikin was there, who's one of my all-time idols of comics.
- 1:07:29Tad Eggleston: I love Howard.
- 1:07:30Ryan: Yeah, and he was doing a talk, and I asked him a question, and he had me come up and sit with him for, like, half an hour.
- 1:07:38Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's cool.
- 1:07:39Ryan: In front of, you know, in front of who knows how many people, talking comics with one of your all-time idols. That would rank up there in my,
- 1:07:49Ryan: absolute moments, but for people that I've been able to communicate with, not in person, but virtually, but is pinched me that I'm even talking to this person, I still get starstruck by the fact that I have, exchanged many messages over time with Gary Panter.
- 1:08:10Ryan: Yeah, and he sent me stuff in the mail, and to me, that,
- 1:08:16Ryan: So, you know, that's like how other people would feel about talking to Michael Jackson or something, you know?
- 1:08:22Tad Eggleston: Right. I mean, that's the other weird thing, like, we're in comics, so it's like, the people that were like, oh, I got to spend time with, like, anybody not in comics is like…
- 1:08:32Ryan: Who? Yeah.
- 1:08:34Tad Eggleston: Who? Are they the… are they the guy at the gas station?
- 1:08:39e joy: Right.
- 1:08:40Tad Eggleston: That could be your librarian, for all I know.
- 1:08:45Ryan: Here's one that, I didn't know
- 1:08:50Ryan: But that he was even much of a comics guy, but,
- 1:08:55Ryan: I got a couple of emails.
- 1:08:59Ryan: a few months before he passed, saying he was reading my stuff, and just… we'd banter back and forth a little bit with Robin Williams.
- 1:09:08Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 1:09:10e joy: Damn.
- 1:09:11Ryan: I did not even.
- 1:09:11Tad Eggleston: Wow.
- 1:09:12Ryan: Yeah, turned out he was a really big comics reader, I had no idea.
- 1:09:16Tad Eggleston: I mean, it doesn't shock me shock me? Because, like, the way I hear it, he went out of his way to get the Popeye role, but Popeye wasn't just a comic?
- 1:09:27Tad Eggleston: But yeah, that's cool.
- 1:09:31Tad Eggleston: That's cool.
- 1:09:33Tad Eggleston: Alright, standard closing question.
- 1:09:37Tad Eggleston: Tell me something you love, preferably a comic, but we don't have rules. Preferably storytelling, but again, with the rules, but something that you love.
- 1:09:48Tad Eggleston: And not enough people around you have experienced it, and you really want them to so that you have more people to talk about it with.
- 1:09:58Ryan: Vortex!
- 1:10:00Tad Eggleston: Yeah, no, we can't use ones that we've already talked about in detail. -
- 1:10:06Tad Eggleston: You already said Vortex, I need something different, Ryan.
- 1:10:09Ryan: Sure.
- 1:10:13Tad Eggleston: I will, I will, I will plug Vortex again.
- 1:10:17Tad Eggleston: From, from, from, I'm just keep seeing Emily over and over again.
- 1:10:26Ryan: Jimmer.
- 1:10:26Tad Eggleston: Emily Zimmer.
- 1:10:28Tad Eggleston: Emmy for short. 26 years old, and live in Oakland, California.
- 1:10:34Ryan: Oh, she's got years and years to go.
- 1:10:36Tad Eggleston: Loves drawing, playing music, skateboarding, and reading.
- 1:10:41Ryan: She's got years and years of good comics ahead of her then.
- 1:10:47Ryan: Alright, Emily, what do you got?
- 1:10:49e joy: Oh, shoot, yeah, I guess,
- 1:10:55e joy: if we're… I might have to do the same thing as you and re-promote a Cream Thing in His Golden Year by Sam Hensley. And also, I wanted to add, you were talking about, Andrew Alexander earlier.
- 1:11:08e joy: And, Andy Alexander of Cram, and then the Cream Thring book was designed and edited by him. So, he had a hand in that as well.
- 1:11:21Ryan: And it looks gorgeous.
- 1:11:23e joy: Yeah, it's so cool, and I got to see it, like, read, like, the entire book, and sam Hensley builds robots, and, they brought, like, two robots to the show, so there were just these, like, it was like a moth.
- 1:11:39e joy: anteater thing, and then there was, like, a very slowly moving butterfly baby in, like, a crib. And it was just a very eerie scene, but it was also really funny, like, the book, you know, so,
- 1:11:53e joy: Yeah, excellent evening.
- 1:11:57e joy: So that's what I recommend.
- 1:12:02Tad Eggleston: Alright.
- 1:12:03Ryan: And if there's one other thing in comics I'd like everybody to experience once, Short run.
- 1:12:11e joy: Oh yeah, short run, rules!
- 1:12:13Ryan: Yup, there's no show.
- 1:12:16Ryan: There's no…
- 1:12:17Tad Eggleston: The online…
- 1:12:18Tad Eggleston: Yeah. One year, I need to remember to start saving ahead of time, so rather than trying to decide what to buy, I can just buy the whole thing.
- 1:12:28Tad Eggleston: Because every year, I'm sitting there going, that would be so much easier than…
- 1:12:34Tad Eggleston: than figuring out what I'm spending.
- 1:12:38Tad Eggleston: if I was just in a position that I could go.
- 1:12:41Tad Eggleston: You know, it's like $400 for all of it, just… done.
- 1:12:50Tad Eggleston: Because short, short run is, is, is pretty awesome.
- 1:12:54Ryan: Yep.
- 1:12:57Ryan: What about you, Tad? You brought it up.
- 1:13:00Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, I mean, it's my show, I always talk about this stuff.
- 1:13:04Tad Eggleston: But, if I've gotta do something right now, off the top of my head,
- 1:13:11Tad Eggleston: If only because I'm rereading it today for a book club, and it still doesn't get the attention it deserves, and Volume 2 is right around the corner, Liam Sharpe's Starhenge.
- 1:13:23Tad Eggleston: Book 1, The Dragon and the Boar.
- 1:13:26Ryan: Star hands?
- 1:13:27Tad Eggleston: Starhenge.
- 1:13:29Tad Eggleston: It's, it's, it's… It's like… Teenage romance mixed with… Arthurian legend and… and…
- 1:13:50Tad Eggleston: crazy sci-fi and Doctor Who timey-wimey shit.
- 1:13:56Ryan: That would probably be up my alley. I mean, I'm a huge Doctor Who fan.
- 1:13:59Tad Eggleston: And it's all painted.
- 1:14:02Tad Eggleston: And his page layouts are outstanding.
- 1:14:08Tad Eggleston: yeah, it's one of my favorite books, and I get to talk about it tonight on a book club, and I'm talking to Liam again on Tuesday about Volume 2, which he's been kind enough to send me all four issues of already.
- 1:14:21Ryan: Is that a self-published thing?
- 1:14:24Tad Eggleston: No, it's through Image Comics.
- 1:14:26Ryan: image.
- 1:14:27Tad Eggleston: image, and, and actually the, the paperback version of Starhenge…
- 1:14:32Tad Eggleston: is coming out at the same time that the first issue of Starhench
- 1:14:39Tad Eggleston: Book 2 will come out, which is, like, next month.
- 1:14:44Tad Eggleston: The hardcover is already available.
- 1:14:47Tad Eggleston: It has been for a couple of years now. It's like his labor of love, so, like, he often will have to go and, like, do work for money, and then come back and put out another volume of Starhenge.
- 1:15:00Ryan: I bet that art is something else.
- 1:15:02Tad Eggleston: Oh, the art is… Yeah, so July 1st…
- 1:15:07Tad Eggleston: The, the, the paperback version of…
- 1:15:11Tad Eggleston: the first Starhenge will come out along with Issue 1 of Book 2, which is called A Kiss for Atticus.
- 1:15:19Tad Eggleston: Here, I'll share the screen so you can see the cover artwork, but this is a case where the cover artwork and the interior artwork
- 1:15:26Tad Eggleston: Have more in common than you might otherwise expect.
- 1:15:35Ryan: Oh yeah, look at that.
- 1:15:36Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:15:38Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:15:41Ryan: Wow.
- 1:15:43Tad Eggleston: No, I mean, I don't know how well…
- 1:15:45Ryan: I'm gonna check that one out.
- 1:15:47Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I don't know how well you know Liam Sharp's other work.
- 1:15:51Ryan: I know the name.
- 1:15:53Tad Eggleston: you know, he's done some great work with Grant Morrison, he's done some great work on his own, he's done stuff in both heavy metal and…
- 1:16:02Ryan: Grant Morrison.
- 1:16:05Tad Eggleston: He did… he did, he did, Grant Morrison's Green Lantern run.
- 1:16:11Ryan: Oh!
- 1:16:14Ryan: I read that!
- 1:16:16Tad Eggleston: Also, he, what… I don't know if you are… are subscribed to Grant Morrison's… Substack?
- 1:16:26Tad Eggleston: Yum.
- 1:16:28Tad Eggleston: Morrison was doing, like, these, these, what he called, he was calling them, pilot comics.
- 1:16:40Tad Eggleston: Only they were part pilot comic, part pilot for whatever. They were essentially proof of concept of an idea.
- 1:16:48Tad Eggleston: to be used as a comic, or a movie, or whatever, but… but Sharp was doing all of the art for that.
- 1:16:55Tad Eggleston: like, when that got announced is when I started paying for Morrison Substack, because I wanted the Liam Sharp art!
- 1:17:03Ryan: Yeah, Grant is an interesting person, there's no doubt about it.
- 1:17:06Tad Eggleston: He is.
- 1:17:07Tad Eggleston: But, but yeah, no, he, he did some, Conan recently.
- 1:17:13Tad Eggleston: He did some Wonder Woman, he did, the…
- 1:17:18Ryan: I'm publishing Conan comics now.
- 1:17:21Tad Eggleston: Titan?
- 1:17:22Tad Eggleston: Has the main Conan comic?
- 1:17:25Tad Eggleston: Though I think Ablaze is still doing the Cimmerian, so, so, like…
- 1:17:32Tad Eggleston: because the Robert E. Howard stories themselves are considered public domain, and therefore the character is kind of public domain, but somehow the name
- 1:17:46Tad Eggleston: In terms of being a title.
- 1:17:48Tad Eggleston: Is not public domain for comics.
- 1:17:52Tad Eggleston: Does that make sense? I mean, it only kind of makes sense to me.
- 1:17:56Tad Eggleston: But…
- 1:17:58Ryan: Yeah, I guess, like, within the next couple years, like, The original, like.
- 1:18:05Ryan: That's gonna happen with, like, Batman and other characters.
- 1:18:09Ryan: They're…
- 1:18:10Tad Eggleston: they're coming up on… I mean, right now, you can draw, like, 4 or 5 different versions of Mickey Mouse in public domain.
- 1:18:18Tad Eggleston: It's one of the reasons that they keep changing
- 1:18:21Tad Eggleston: The, the, the, the, the base…
- 1:18:27Tad Eggleston: characteristics of Mickey Mouse, because it's like, okay, you can draw him, but he can't have red shorts yet. He can't have gloves yet. That's copyrighted later.
- 1:18:36Ryan: Yup.
- 1:18:37Ryan: And that's why they completely changed the whole look of Howard the Duck, so that he's unrecognizable. It's not even Gerber's character anymore.
- 1:18:46Tad Eggleston: Right. But, like,
- 1:18:52Tad Eggleston: Winnie the Pooh just went public domain.
- 1:18:55Tad Eggleston: Popeyes just went public domain.
- 1:18:59Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:19:02Ryan: Yeah, actually, the…
- 1:19:03Tad Eggleston: The best way to know that something is public domain is when you suddenly see a lot of trashy horror movies around it.
- 1:19:11Ryan: Honest to God, if I had to, like, name the best comic I've read in the last however many years, it's been those, E.C. Seeger Sunday reprints of Popeye.
- 1:19:22Tad Eggleston: Yeah, those have been good.
- 1:19:23Ryan: Those are just absolutely fantastic. I just, I can't get enough.
- 1:19:28Tad Eggleston: Well, I need to take another… I need to take a break before the next round, so I'm gonna…
- 1:19:33Ryan: Thanks for having us on, always a pleasure.
- 1:19:36Tad Eggleston: Absolutely, for Emily Mayer and Ryan Carey, insert name, ZineFest is… August 30th?
- 1:19:45Tad Eggleston: at.
- 1:19:46Tad Eggleston: Odd Mart on Lindale Avenue in Minneapolis, noon to 6, rain or shine,
- 1:19:53Tad Eggleston: Odd Mart itself is worth the stop. I don't think…
- 1:19:57Tad Eggleston: I don't think I'm gonna go to Minneapolis many times in the future without stopping and going to Odd Mart.
- 1:20:05Tad Eggleston: I, I was, I was quite pleased with that stop, as I was with the,
- 1:20:11Tad Eggleston: Oh, what was the name of the stop that I shopped at? Right before going… grabbing pizza, Emily, do you remember, or would I have to look at my phone and look at text messages to know?
- 1:20:20e joy: Oh, was it another comic book store?
- 1:20:24Tad Eggleston: It is, but it's all… all.
- 1:20:27e joy: Dreamhaven?
- 1:20:29Tad Eggleston: No, it wasn't Dreamhaven, because it's all back issues, and it's got a record store. Nostalgia Zone. Nostalgia Zone, yeah.
- 1:20:37Tad Eggleston: I scored so many cool things in the $4 shelves at Nostalgia Zone.
- 1:20:46Tad Eggleston: That one…
- 1:20:47e joy: on Lake Street.
- 1:20:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 1:20:49Tad Eggleston: That was… that was, my thanks to Tom Kaczynski for telling me to make… make a point of stopping at Nostalgia Zone before I left town.
- 1:20:58Tad Eggleston: And also, Tom, he cost me, like, 50 more dollars.
- 1:21:05Ryan: Oh, well, it was money well spent, I'm sure.
- 1:21:08Tad Eggleston: It was. It was money very well spent. So, again, for Emily Mayer and Ryan Carey, this has been 22 Panels, and we will see you after the next page.
