- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 3rd of
- 0:16June. Great to have your company.
- 0:18Thanks for tapping on play and inviting me into your day so
- 0:21that you and I can keep going on this journey together.
- 0:25And this journey might be a little bit confusing.
- 0:27If you had downloaded a Bible reading plan at the start of the
- 0:31year, you'd be thinking you shouldn't be reading
- 0:34Deuteronomy. We're not up to that at the
- 0:35moment. Yes, that was the second last
- 0:38edit and the final edit has now been made live.
- 0:41And this is the edit where we are going to be reading
- 0:44Deuteronomy for the next 4 weeks and then taking a break and
- 0:48spending a few weeks reading some love poetry in the song
- 0:52songs, which will be lovely. And then we'll return and finish
- 0:56off Deuteronomy after that. So yes, that is what happened.
- 0:59That is why some of you may have a reading guide that isn't quite
- 1:02exactly what we're doing right now.
- 1:04Or you might be one of these people who's thinking, what are
- 1:06you talking about, mate? You just read the Bible every
- 1:08day. Well, if you're interested, you
- 1:10can download an outline of what we'll do for the year in the
- 1:13show notes, but otherwise, just sit back, relax, and come on the
- 1:17journey with me. However this works for you.
- 1:20And Speaking of that journey, we are in that space, that liminal
- 1:25space with Moses sharing these words to the people of Israel
- 1:29before they enter the promised land, just recapping on their
- 1:32story to date so that everyone knows the heritage before they
- 1:37head off into that new space. So let's continue with the
- 1:40journey as we read together Deuteronomy chapter 2.
- 1:53Then we turned around and headed back across the wilderness
- 1:56toward the Red Sea, just as the Lord had instructed me, and we
- 2:01wandered around in the region of Mount Seir for a long time.
- 2:05Then at last the Lord said to me, You have been wandering
- 2:09around this Hill Country long enough.
- 2:11Turn to the north. Give these orders to the people.
- 2:15You will pass through the country belonging to your
- 2:17relatives, the Edomites, the descendants of Esau who live in
- 2:21Seer. The Edomites will feel
- 2:23threatened, so be careful. Do not bother them, for I have
- 2:27given them all the Hill Country around Mount Sia as their
- 2:31property, and I will not give you even one square foot of
- 2:35their land. If you need food to eat or water
- 2:38to drink, pay them for it, for the Lord your God has blessed
- 2:42you in everything you have done. He has watched your every step
- 2:46through this great wilderness. During these 40 years, the Lord
- 2:50your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing.
- 2:55So we bypassed the territory of our relatives, the descendants
- 2:58of Esau who lived in Sia. We avoided the road through the
- 3:02Arabah Valley that comes up from Elath and Ezion Gabba.
- 3:07Then as we turn N along the desert route through Moab, the
- 3:11Lord warned us. Do not bother the Moabites, the
- 3:15descendants of Lot, or start a war with them.
- 3:18I've given them A as their property, and I will not give
- 3:22you any of their land. A race of giants called the
- 3:26Emites had once lived in the area of A.
- 3:30They were as strong and numerous and tall as the Anakites,
- 3:34another race of giants. Both the Emites and Anakites are
- 3:39also known as the Rephates, though the Moabites call them
- 3:43Emites. In earlier times the Horites had
- 3:46lived in Sayer, but they were driven out and displaced by the
- 3:50descendants of Esau, just as Israel drove out the people of
- 3:54Canaan. Then the Lord gave Israel their
- 3:56land. Moses continued.
- 3:59Then the Lord said to us, Get moving, cross the Zeared Brook.
- 4:04So we crossed the brook. 38 years passed from the time we
- 4:09first left Kadesh Bhaniya until we finally crossed the Zeared
- 4:13Brook. By then all the men old enough
- 4:16to fight in battle had died in the wilderness, as the Lord had
- 4:20vowed would happen. The Lord struck them down until
- 4:24they had all been eliminated from the community.
- 4:27When all the men of fighting age had died, the Lord said to me To
- 4:31Day You will cross the border of Moab at AA and enter the land of
- 4:36the Ammonites, the descendants of Lot, but do not bother them
- 4:40or start a war with them. I've given the land of Ammon to
- 4:43them as their property, and I will not give you any of their
- 4:46land. That area was once considered
- 4:49the land of the rephates who had lived there, though the
- 4:53Ammonites call them Zamzomites. They were also as strong and
- 4:58numerous and tall as the Anakites, but the Lord destroyed
- 5:02them so the Amorites could occupy their land.
- 5:05He had done the same for the descendants of Esau who lived in
- 5:08Sayer, for he destroyed the Horrites so they could settle
- 5:12there in their place. The descendants of Esau lived
- 5:15there to this day. A similar thing happened when
- 5:19the Kaftorites from Crete invaded and destroyed the Avites
- 5:23who had lived in villages in the area of Gaza.
- 5:27Moses continued. Then the Lord said, Now get
- 5:31moving. Cross the Arnon Gorge.
- 5:34Look, I will hand over to you, Scion, the Amorite king of
- 5:39Heshbon, and I will give you his land, attack him, and begin to
- 5:43occupy the land. Beginning today, I will make
- 5:47people throughout the earth terrified because of you.
- 5:50When they hear reports about you, they will tremble with
- 5:53dread and fear. Moses continued.
- 5:58From the wilderness of Kedemoth, I sent ambassadors to King Scion
- 6:03of Heshbon. With this proposal of peace, let
- 6:07us travel through your land. We will stay on the main road
- 6:10and won't turn off into the fields on either side.
- 6:13Sell us food to eat and water to drink, and we will pay for it.
- 6:17All we want is permission to pass through your land.
- 6:21The descendants of Esau who lived in Saya allowed us to go
- 6:24through their country, and so did the Moabites who live in Ah.
- 6:28Let us pass through until we cross the Jordan into the land
- 6:31the Lord our God is giving us. But King Scion of Heshbon
- 6:36refused to allow us to pass through, because the Lord your
- 6:40God made Scion stubborn and defiant so he could help you
- 6:44defeat him as he has now done. Then the Lord said to me, Look,
- 6:51I have begun to hand King Scion and his land over to you.
- 6:55Begin now to conquer and occupy his land.
- 6:59Then King Scion declared war on us and mobilised his forces at
- 7:03Jehas. But the Lord our God handed him
- 7:06over to us and we crushed him, his sons and all his people.
- 7:12We conquered all his towns and completely destroyed everyone,
- 7:15men, women and children. Not a single person was spared.
- 7:20We took all the livestock as plunder for ourselves, along
- 7:23with anything of value from the towns we ransacked.
- 7:27The Lord our God also helped us conquer Aroa on the edge of the
- 7:31Arnon Gorge, and the town in the gorge and the whole area as far
- 7:36as Gilead. No town had walls too strong for
- 7:40us. However, we avoided the land of
- 7:42the Ammonites all along the Jabok River and the towns in the
- 7:46Hill Country, all the places the Lord our God had commanded us to
- 7:50leave alone. Ah Lord, it is good for us to go
- 8:03over the story, the story of you interacting with us and our
- 8:08people. Story of all of your goodness
- 8:11and provision for us. Ah Lord, we are not very good at
- 8:15looking back and seeing your hand in our lives.
- 8:19We are so often busy with the current moment or worrying about
- 8:23what's coming up. Lord, give us moment to pause as
- 8:29we think about our lives, to see the numerous places with your
- 8:35fingerprints all over them as you walk with us and not
- 8:40necessarily laying straight the paths before us so that
- 8:43everything's easy but but shaping us, moulding us, loving
- 8:49us through every step of our journey will help us always be
- 8:53aware of your place in our lives, of your presence, of your
- 8:58interest in what goes on to us, and most of all, your love for
- 9:03us. Thank you for making that so
- 9:06clear by giving us Jesus and for everything he did for us.
- 9:12And so we're able to pray all of these things in his saving name.
- 9:17Amen.
