- 0:55Our primary purpose is stay soap and help other Alcoholics
- 0:58achieve sobriety. Hello, I'm Kira and I'm an
- 1:02alcoholic. Thank you for taking the time to
- 1:08hear me. Now my drinking started.
- 1:17Firstly, I'd like to thank Dennis for being of service, and
- 1:21I'd like to thank my higher power for being with me.
- 1:25I I prayed a lot before I came on to sober talk today.
- 1:33I prayed to God to remove my fear and direct my thinking to
- 1:42what he would have me be. And I want to start off by
- 1:48talking about this concept of a higher power.
- 1:52When I came into AAI was so shaken and so rattled by what
- 2:00alcoholism had done to me that I didn't see the God word on the
- 2:12banners as a bad thing anymore. And I had been.
- 2:21I had a lot of family trawler around around religion growing
- 2:27up, and when I came into AAI was so spiritually broken, so
- 2:32spiritually bankrupt. Alcoholism had really taken
- 2:39everything from me that when I came into AAI, was absolutely
- 2:43defeated. I was willing to give anything a
- 2:46go. I'd become a daily Blackout
- 2:50Drinker, I4 or five later, being cast a day blackout drinker.
- 2:59And my first meeting, I was shaking so hard I could barely
- 3:05stand up straight and this beautiful woman kind of won't be
- 3:11named. She came out of the meeting and
- 3:13she took my hand and she sat with me and I cried.
- 3:18And she ripped her tissue in half and she gave me half a
- 3:22tissue. I just remember that now.
- 3:26It's just that part. But she held my hand and she sat
- 3:30with me as I cried. And I had no idea what was going
- 3:33to happen. I just knew that I needed help.
- 3:37I just knew that I needed help and I knew that there was hope
- 3:42in the rooms of A A and I felt, I felt so inspired by what I
- 3:51heard. I didn't hear too much because I
- 3:54was in so much fear and I was so scared, so scared of what was
- 4:01going to happen. But as the meeting finished up
- 4:06and people surrounded me, felt so loved, felt so loved and so
- 4:13safe, people were so kind. And I hadn't had that for a
- 4:19really long time, Just this generosity and kindness.
- 4:26There had been a lot of shame and negativity in my mind about
- 4:32what a bottom feeder I was and how I was going nowhere in life.
- 4:39Alcoholism, that isn't, I have come to understand, is disease.
- 4:47This ease of the mind and body. I've become so restless,
- 4:53irritable and discontent that I need something to help me calm
- 5:01my nerves and help me get through life.
- 5:05I'm very grateful that Alcoholics Anonymous has taught
- 5:09me that alcohol was my solution to my alcohol ISM, and picking
- 5:20up a drink was just something that I used to ease my
- 5:24discomfort. But what I really have is a
- 5:29spiritual malady is spiritual bankruptcy, and I need to fill
- 5:37the alcohol void with something. And AA gives me a program, a
- 5:41really beautiful, simple program.
- 5:45It's not always easy. I still stumble, but people are
- 5:51there to help me. They help me.
- 5:54I reach out my hand and they there are people there.
- 5:58Instead of picking up a drink, I pick up the phone and I reach
- 6:02out. I go.
- 6:04Can you help me with this problem?
- 6:05What do I do today? OK, what's your advice?
- 6:08Or how do I get through this? And people give me their
- 6:11support? People will take the time.
- 6:14And I've been meeting people lately that, you know, have 1/5
- 6:21of my sobriety time or you know, five years younger than me and
- 6:27they give me such beautiful advice.
- 6:29It is so. It is so cunning, baffling and
- 6:35powerful. This disease this, this, this
- 6:4080s. I love to say it like that
- 6:42because I it's so hard to me, so hard for me sometimes to think
- 6:49I'm I'm such a sick person. But it is.
- 6:56I've come to accept that I am. I'm a sick person.
- 6:59I'm. I'm a sick person.
- 7:01I've got I've got this sickness in my mind it it really does
- 7:05want to kill me, really does want to kill me.
- 7:08And it took leaving the rooms to understand and see how much my
- 7:15mind gets really out of shape. With fear, with shame.
- 7:20With guilt. And I have been trying lately to
- 7:29concentrate more on the halts recently, which is something
- 7:37that doesn't get shed so much lately, but it it did more so
- 7:46when I came in and it does in in some other fellowships.
- 7:50I'm hungry, angry, lonely, thirsty, tired.
- 7:53I try and bring it back to these really simple basics.
- 7:57When I'm running rough, hungry, angry, lonely, thirsty, tired,
- 8:02hungry, angry, lonely, thirsty, tired.
- 8:05If I I keep checking on these things and make sure I'm eating
- 8:09three meals a day, I'm angry. I can.
- 8:13I can talk to someone about my angers.
- 8:15Angry, angry, lonely. Pick up the phone and talk to
- 8:18someone hungry, angry, lonely, thirsty.
- 8:20I drink lots of water. I was drinking four or five
- 8:23liters again. A day of cheap wine, I drink
- 8:28lots of water. I don't shame myself for having
- 8:31coffee or the occasional occasional soft drink or
- 8:38something else. Hungry, angular, thirsty, tired.
- 8:41And I make sure that I I get enough sleep.
- 8:44I keep myself, try and keep myself in in good shape.
- 8:48And these things have been helping.
- 8:51These things have been helping. And what's really important to
- 8:55me is making sure that I get to meetings and talking to other
- 8:59Alcoholics. Because even though I've got a
- 9:04little bit of sobriety time, I recently celebrated 9 1/2 years.
- 9:08Which to me just baffles me because I still sometimes feel
- 9:16undeserving of that, even though I know in my heart I am.
- 9:21God wouldn't have given it to me.
- 9:23I wasn't. I still have to do meetings.
- 9:28I need to connect with other Alcoholics.
- 9:35The world is full of such a complicated, multi dimensional,
- 9:46multifaceted group of individuals.
- 9:50I need to connect with people who are like me and don't drink.
- 9:58I live with someone who drinks and that's OK You know, they're
- 10:02allowed to have alcohol. We went out for their birthday
- 10:08recently and that was really lovely.
- 10:11And I was sitting around their friends and family and they
- 10:14could have wine and beer. And I just sat on my soft drink
- 10:19and I sipped it slowly and not really.
- 10:25It really amused me to see how much people consume, how much
- 10:31liquid people can put inside of them.
- 10:35And I think, wow, that that used to be me.
- 10:39I need to go back to my meetings and and share these stories and
- 10:45have a safe place where I can go back and connect with people who
- 10:48don't drink and have that reminder that it's not my
- 10:51solution anymore. My solution to life is working
- 10:58this program and having a higher power in my life.
- 11:03Having a higher power in my life has really helped me understand
- 11:07that I'm not the one running the show.
- 11:13I'm not the one that has my best interests at heart.
- 11:21I'm not the one that's doing my life, to be honest.
- 11:24My life is not in my business and I've had to really struggle
- 11:28and fight with this before. I can take my hands off it and
- 11:32some days I still want to hang on to it really hard and have it
- 11:38my way. And the way how.
- 11:42I know it's not me doing it, it's more higher power.
- 11:46Doing it is I'll make plans. I'll make plans and then
- 11:51something will happen. Some, you know, I might spill my
- 11:55coffee, or I'll forget that I have to hang my washing out or
- 11:59something. Will intervene and go.
- 12:02This is still the universe's plan.
- 12:04It's not my plan. It's the universe's plan.
- 12:08My thinking, my life, led me to drinking.
- 12:13By the time I was 26, I was a daily blackout drunk.
- 12:17I'd stopped going to work. I stopped connecting with
- 12:20people. I was an isolator.
- 12:24I stopped sharing. I stopped making meals.
- 12:28I stopped doing all the things that I need to do to take care
- 12:32of myself. And somehow my higher power got
- 12:38me into AA universe, got me into AA and said here, here's a
- 12:42better way of living, let us help you.
- 12:45An AA Outlines Program living. I can take my hands off and let
- 12:52it be. It shows me a really beautiful
- 12:55way of living. All of these steps.
- 12:59One, I'm not going to go through them all.
- 13:01But what the first one is. The most important, I believe,
- 13:04is admitting that I'm powerless over alcohol.
- 13:09Admitting that I'm powerless over this disease, that my life
- 13:13can become really quickly unmanageable and I need to work
- 13:18a program and I need to have a higher power come back and to be
- 13:24in the world with human beings, because I'm such a fearful
- 13:27creature. I drank because I'm scared of
- 13:30everything. I'm scared of being in the world
- 13:32with people. And I eased.
- 13:36Sorry, alcohol eased my fears, but only for a really, really
- 13:42short time. Help me live with people and
- 13:48feel like a free spirit. But it was false.
- 13:51It lied to me, and when I woke up the next day, I'd have the
- 13:56shakes. I'd have restless, irritable
- 14:00discontentness all over again. And I just want to keep
- 14:05drinking. And now with a program of
- 14:09action, with A's help, I can do all of it, just without the
- 14:15drinking. I don't have to.
- 14:17I don't have to be a slave to the air coloning war.
- 14:19And that's that's really nice. I can be around people who are
- 14:24drinking. I don't, I don't tempt that.
- 14:28I don't purposefully just go sit in a bar and you know have a
- 14:33soda water just because. But if I need to, if I need to
- 14:37go into a into a bar for for work, sometimes I do some events
- 14:42or if someone like I said my house might had a birthday, I
- 14:45can. I can go into these places and
- 14:47go. I have this safety because I
- 14:50have higher power. I have AAI can find another
- 14:56member. I can go to meetings.
- 14:59I have this. I have this spiritual blanket
- 15:02wrapped around me that that keeps me safe and keeps me
- 15:08protected. And as long as I keep working my
- 15:12program, I feel like everything's gonna be OK.
- 15:15But this is, this is one day at a time, and it's it's contingent
- 15:21on my own, my own well-being my own, putting in the action.
- 15:29Which is why I'm ringing up and doing this sober talk, because I
- 15:35need to be a service. I need to give back to A, A, A.
- 15:39A has given me so much How I mentioned that I came in to a A
- 15:45and these beautiful people just surrounded me and loved me back
- 15:50to life. And I I need to remember that
- 15:55there are people coming into the rooms and they need to have that
- 15:59same love. And I want to give that love out
- 16:02too. I want to give that back.
- 16:05I really believe that the universe's message, God's
- 16:10message. I'm very spiritual, not not
- 16:13religious, but I'm so comfortable with using the word
- 16:18God. I just think it's a really
- 16:20beautiful, powerful way to to navigate, navigate the power of
- 16:29the universe. I really believe that God works
- 16:33through people and sends messages and sends love.
- 16:39Very specific messages or different bits and pieces
- 16:43through people. And I think that's really,
- 16:46really incredible. When people are reaching out for
- 16:49help or reaching out for support.
- 16:52I want the hand of AI always to be there.
- 16:55For that, I am so truly, truly grateful.
- 17:02I would be 9 1/2 years sober without what this fellowship has
- 17:09given to me. I feel so incredibly blessed and
- 17:14so incredibly great, and and I think I'll leave it there.
- 17:20Waste of time. How did you find out about
- 17:24Alcoholics Anonymous? Oh, thank you, Dennis.
- 17:27That's such a good question. I am.
- 17:31I actually was. I actually Googled it, I think,
- 17:36and my sister, she, she was in NA.
- 17:41She was in NA and she knew the program of recovery.
- 17:45So she said to me once, when you're drinking, when you feel
- 17:51like you can't control it, you let me know and we'll get to a
- 17:55meeting. And I Googled a A and I just
- 17:59watched people on the Internet. I just watched them getting
- 18:03better and I sat there and I just cried.
- 18:06But something really hit me. I was just Googling a a for half
- 18:11a day crying. And I remember sitting there
- 18:14hungover from the night before thinking it's either I go to the
- 18:18BOLO and I get another cast or I ring my sister and we go to an A
- 18:22a meeting and she took me to a meeting.
- 18:26She took me to a meeting that night and it was the best thing
- 18:30that it never happened to me, the most scariest thing that
- 18:33ever happened, but the best thing that ever happened.
- 18:37It was amazing. Beautiful.
- 18:45Thank you so much. Thank you for do you share,
- 18:49Karen. Thank you, Denz.
