Transcript
- 0:08[SPEAKER_00]: Hey everybody, welcome back to the Graemolkin Lane podcast where queer friends and allies gather to review and discuss the original X-Men comics in continuity order.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: Today is my favorite episode of The Month.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_00]: It is the trial.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_00]: But today we're not doing a trial.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing more of an academic panel.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: We've done some of these for characters such as Franklin Richards.
- 0:27[SPEAKER_00]: Today we're going to be talking all about Eric the Red.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: And if you've been listening to the show, it has been shear month on the show.
- 0:34[SPEAKER_00]: We're framing it all around these crazy space alien colonialist bird people in the universe.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: This is a wild.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's been really fun for me to delve deep and basically we've only scratched the surface.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_00]: Over on the Patreon you've heard me cover characters like the fraternity of raptors that delve really deep into the Shiar lore.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: Today, we're going to form this discussion around a lot of different deep-shear lore, especially the stuff that is initially introduced.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: But there's about a dozen of these conversations we could have because this empire has gone grown to take up so much space in the Marvel universe.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_00]: I am joined by a group of my favorite friends.
- 1:11[SPEAKER_00]: I'm so happy all of you are here.
- 1:13[SPEAKER_00]: I got to see so many of you in person this year, except for Jay Cosmic.
- 1:16[SPEAKER_00]: Come back, we miss you so I'm looking forward to our time together this afternoon.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_01]: Let's open here.
- 1:23[SPEAKER_00]: Robin Hood and his merry-men against the evil Prince John, the three musketeers, Captain Blood, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, the Lensman, the seven samurai, Dr. Who, Star Trek, Dune, Planet of the Apes, Star Wars, Micronauts, Rama Space Knight, Dred Star, the Guardians of the Galaxy.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, we're going to talk about the theme connecting all of these, but it's the same literary format for each.
- 1:51[SPEAKER_00]: For centuries, we've been telling stories about rag-tag groups of freedom fighters facing off against the evil oppression of fascist or colonial empire.
- 2:01[SPEAKER_00]: But in late 1970s, building off of decades of sci-fi stories, Star Wars launched to critical acclaim, and it was one of those movies that changed things forever.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_00]: In the X-Men, we are in the main series on my show as we do scriptreads, joining the star jammers and LaLandra as they fight for the throne of the evil colonizing alien empire of the shiar and avian race with slave pits who have conquered 10,000 worlds in the name of their gods.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_00]: LaLandra is the rightful majestic.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: but her mad brother DeKen has taken over and now he has a genocidal weapon in the mcron crystal.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, we just covered the first appearances of Deathbird on my show.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: She's not gonna come up a lot today, but we'll talk about her because she's one of my top five X-Men villains.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_00]: Love her very much.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: Then we have the Imperial Guard, the Phoenix Force, we are now in full space opera mode.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: The Chiar are the Empire.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: De Ken is Palpatine, the earliest consistent X-Men foe under the pen of Chris Claremont is Eric the Red, who I would argue in our conversation here is Darth Vader.
- 3:08[SPEAKER_00]: Let me welcome my esteemed jury of hot and nerdy friends.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_00]: All of you are wonderful.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to have so much fun talking about things, but I want to hear your early thoughts on a couple of things.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: Number one, are you a Star Wars fan?
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: Number two, let me hear your thoughts on the comparison between Star Wars and the Shiar.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: Let me begin by welcoming Austin Gordon back to the show.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, Austin.
- 3:30[SPEAKER_00]: So lovely to see you.
- 3:32[SPEAKER_03]: Hello Chad and fellow panelists, great to see you again.
- 3:35[SPEAKER_03]: Good to be here.
- 3:36[SPEAKER_03]: I am he him and it's interesting that you framed it as the the she are are the empire because they absolutely are but one of the things that I realized in in doing the research for this episode is how much that that is only sort of implied early on in the early goings.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_03]: Lulandra is.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_03]: is, you know, kind of the Princess Leia figure in these early stories and, you know, the X-Men are aiding her, and then later on things get a lot more complicated, and if he comes very clear that they are the evil empire, which then in hindsight has been there all along, because of course, Corsair's whole origin is slave pits.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_03]: And that's not really great, but there's very much this air of like, oh, the bad stuff is all decayed and once LaLander is in place, everything will be fine, but that's not really how it turns at all.
- 4:28[SPEAKER_00]: No, I know there's some nerds losing their minds right now, because I understand the she our empire predates the original Star Wars film.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: There are likely more starch.
- 4:37[SPEAKER_00]: track references in the early origins of the shiar.
- 4:40[SPEAKER_00]: We're still drawing the comparison because they both follow the same format.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: If you've never read the Lensman series, you'll know what I'm talking about very quickly if you look this up.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: A rag tag group of crazy heroes, you know, let me go to Derrick Nichols next.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, Derrick.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_01]: Hey everybody, I'm Derek.
- 4:55[SPEAKER_01]: My proms are a heat-a, and I, um, so for those of you who don't know, when you agree to do what these episodes Chad sends an outline, and my poems got very sweaty when he started talking about Star Wars, this first paragraph, and he's making me publicly admit that I don't think have ever seen one of those movies on a nerd podcast.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_01]: So, uh, I'm sorry, uh, I'm going to let you down on that.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, I don't know what Spock's up to.
- 5:17[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, I did say my book is start trick.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 5:21[SPEAKER_00]: I know I'm really debating right now.
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: I'm really debating.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_01]: I just know that, but I did in my readings, I think there's a lot of biblical references and what I had to do.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_01]: So that was the comparisons that I pulled.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 5:32[SPEAKER_00]: Let me also welcome Chapman Blake.
- 5:34[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back, chap.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_00]: Hello.
- 5:35[SPEAKER_05]: Hello.
- 5:36[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome everybody and welcome to me.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_05]: I guess my pronouns are they then they she reports, and my relationship to Star Wars is that I am a huge Star Wars fan.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_05]: I go through cycles with it.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_05]: I will step away for a couple of years and then I'll find myself for six months straight, just deep diving back into the world.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_05]: I tend to pick up different pieces and different eras and try to really nail down like one, two to three year periods, so I'll watch all the stuff kind of in.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_05]: In
- 6:04[SPEAKER_05]: the midst of the Clone Wars or in the midst of the rebellion.
- 6:06[SPEAKER_05]: But I have a huge love for that entire universe.
- 6:09[SPEAKER_05]: I agree.
- 6:10[SPEAKER_05]: I see the Shiar a little bit more as the the Star Trek references just in terms of their aesthetics.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_05]: For me Star Wars is very much it's leaning towards more of that cassette punk esk view of things that everything is a little bit more techy, everything will, the wires are a bit more exposed.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_05]: Whereas the Shiar, everything's a little bit more buttoned up, everything's a little
- 6:33[SPEAKER_05]: But I definitely see that Star Wars angle in there and I'm excited.
- 6:36[SPEAKER_05]: I've got some weird guys today.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_05]: So I'm excited to talk about, I guess, the Phoenix Force as the, and the M-Cron Crystal as the Force.
- 6:44[SPEAKER_05]: Question mark.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_05]: So we'll get to do it.
- 6:46[SPEAKER_00]: The, the always the Messianic journey.
- 6:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's the rings from Lord of the Rings.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's the, the nothing from, from never ending story.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: There's always those like universe ending, push a button somewhere, you know,
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, these are really fun.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: These are Zany's stories.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: And just such a, I picture walking into that Star Wars Cantina and every character looks crazy.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of what it's like jumping into like a Dave Cockrome early, she our story.
- 7:09[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to J Cosmic Back to the Show as well.
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: Hi, Justin, great to see you.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_04]: same here good to see you as well.
- 7:14[SPEAKER_04]: So I'm Jay Cosmic that's Cosmic with the K and I use he him pronouns.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_04]: Now I'm kind of following that middle ground of Star Wars where I have seen the movies, but I wouldn't call myself a big fan anything I do know about Star Wars is through my husband.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_04]: Brian.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_04]: So I did get a little help with him on this for the comparisons.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_04]: I'm more of an X-Men fan.
- 7:37[SPEAKER_04]: Hence why I'm here.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_04]: But reading this character, I do see the similarities, especially having that help.
- 7:43[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't connect them at first and immediately, but, you know, seeing the comparisons, they both were armor and concealed their identity.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_04]: They do pledge their allegiance to a corrupt emperor, you know, that being to Ken and Palpatine.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_04]: And
- 7:58[SPEAKER_04]: Eric, however, is giving Darth Vader, but make it sexy, although without the sympathetic backstory.
- 8:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's a couple of early X-Men villains, Lucifer and Eric, the Red, or right at the top of that list, with like, grotesque, just underneath, where I like, I want to write these stories.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: There's so much to do with these characters in the early days.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, last but not least, let me welcome my dear friend, Scotty, to geist back to the show, hello, Scotty.
- 8:20[SPEAKER_02]: the low chat.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm skydited and geeseed using key him pronouns.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_02]: What have watched most of the Star Wars wars movies?
- 8:27[SPEAKER_02]: The problem is that I'm kind of a Star Wars heretic because I think all the good ones are the ones that are the ones that people hate.
- 8:33[SPEAKER_02]: So I really loved the last Jedi and I was like, great.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_02]: This has been fantastic.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_02]: And when I say that, that's, you know, right up there with the rage baiting that you can really get the Derek really loved to do with the Star Wars people.
- 8:43[SPEAKER_02]: When I think about this story, I think about not when we're making comparisons about this to Star Wars.
- 8:49[SPEAKER_02]: I also say the Star Trek, and I also see not TNG, but like the 60s episodes where we have a Kirk and his kind of Schwash Buckling team and kind of pick and stuff up as they go along.
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: There's generally been neverland federation, and that sort of feels similar to what this year empire is.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: But then of course, we find out that it's actually just not quite as as nice as we had thought it was going to be.
- 9:10[SPEAKER_00]: So I already know we're drawing short sticks on this comparison because the Shiar are also the War of the Roses and Game of Thrones and so many other genres that kind of exist.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: LaLandra is the runaway space princess and Leia was certainly not the first one to do that, right?
- 9:26[SPEAKER_00]: There's a, there's a lot of tropes.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: Deathbird is so barborella that it's almost painful.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: She's glued feathers all over herself.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: So there's all these amazing references.
- 9:36[SPEAKER_00]: I'm getting more familiar with them.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to be having several conversations about these characters as we jump into the new year.
- 9:41[SPEAKER_00]: Because the Shiaa is also Camelot.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of different types of stories being told, depending on the angle we take it from, but every one of them needs to be animated by Jim Henson.
- 9:52[SPEAKER_00]: I want to jump into the deep lore.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to go for like the super X-Men nerds here for just a minute.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: And let's start with the Summer's Family Conversation.
- 10:01[SPEAKER_00]: In December 1968, under the pencils of Neil Adams, Cyclops donned an insanely sexy costume as Eric Thored.
- 10:09[SPEAKER_00]: He is officially five-clops as what we've decided.
- 10:13[SPEAKER_00]: He is infiltrating the mutant city of Mesmero in order to rescue his friends, including Lorna Dane.
- 10:19[SPEAKER_00]: Years later, when Claire
- 10:22[SPEAKER_00]: He brings in a real Eric Dred, whose name we will later learn is Devonshikari, as the first major behind the scenes foe of the X-Men.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: Eric Mind Controls have it in Lorna Dane and defining the X-Men.
- 10:36[SPEAKER_00]: He helps her pick the name Polaris and gives her a new costume.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_00]: We're about to meet Corsair of the Star Jamers, who's the biological father of Scott and Alex.
- 10:45[SPEAKER_00]: I've already mentioned Scott and Alex if you've been paying attention to this summary.
- 10:48[SPEAKER_00]: Over time in continuity, we're going to learn about Gabriel or Vulcan, who not only has direct ties to Shikari, but who goes on to become the leader of the Shia Empire, who marries deathbird, and they have a secret egg baby out there, that we don't know the result of, it's just like an unhatched human Shia baby.
- 11:07[SPEAKER_00]: And we have Adam X the Extreme,
- 11:09[SPEAKER_00]: who was harvested from the body of Kate Summers and then genetically altered up.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_00]: Remember all those Summers Brothers conversations that sinister likes to give us?
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: These are all she are connected.
- 11:20[SPEAKER_00]: So Gabriel was a baby in the womb of Kate Summers, which was ripped out by DeKen.
- 11:25[SPEAKER_00]: Adam X is then a mix of Kate's DNA with DeKens, or again, maybe a sexual assault story, and this produced Adam, who it has also is also directly
- 11:37[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, now Cyclops's wife, Gene Gray, becomes the host of the Phoenix Force, and this she are do not like that.
- 11:43[SPEAKER_00]: But also Scott and Gene's daughter Rachel gets the Phoenix, and Scott's adoptive father Charles Xavier becomes the royal consort of LaLandra, and his genetic material with hers creates Zandra.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: This family is a fucking mess.
- 11:56[SPEAKER_00]: Also, they wiped out the entire Grave family in front of Rachel that one time.
- 12:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, and Corsair married a skunk.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: And this is before we get to cable and strife and X man and mother of scony and time-traveling Jean Grey and Ruby Summers, and I'm not even going to bring up Cassandra Nova.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: It's all just a giant X man mess, and the Shiar are mixed into the deepest, murkyest parts of it.
- 12:18[SPEAKER_00]: Let me ask you all some key questions, and then I'd love to hear any of your opinions as we go.
- 12:22[SPEAKER_00]: Derek talked to me about that initial Eric the red look for button down Scott Summers.
- 12:27[SPEAKER_01]: sharp pointy things dies out in grand harness so I can't like I mean I see that and I gave Ryan a bet so he fit right in.
- 12:34[SPEAKER_00]: Does it baffle you that this is cyclops the this is his choice?
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: No one's ever told this story by the way we don't know why he selected this name or armor.
- 12:42[SPEAKER_01]: I mean it's baffling but I mean he can only see red right so it kind of makes sense.
- 12:46[SPEAKER_00]: Austin, do you have thoughts on Eric the Red as an early Claremont villain kind of clotting his initial stories together as it builds toward the Phoenix force?
- 12:54[SPEAKER_03]: Ah, yes.
- 12:55[SPEAKER_03]: I would absolutely love to know what Claremont was thinking.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_03]: I would love someone to tell that behind the scenes story of how we went from Cyclops pretending to be someone named Eric the Red.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_03]: Chris Claremont didn't hit on that accidentally.
- 13:13[SPEAKER_03]: That was clearly intentional.
- 13:15[SPEAKER_03]: And it's just like you said, never been addressed, never been answered.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_03]: I would love to know what the intent was there.
- 13:22[SPEAKER_03]: But I love that Eric Thurad is is kind of the first multi issue connective tissue villain of the X-Men.
- 13:30[SPEAKER_03]: It's so much of what makes Claremont's run.
- 13:32[SPEAKER_03]: I'm stand out and so good is his ability to run subplots and things like that in the way that he kind of used Eric as the connective tissue between starting a greatest hits run of sorts with with cochrome in those early goings.
- 13:47[SPEAKER_03]: I think is really effective and it's the way to sort of merge the history of the book with what was clearly Clairemont's passion at the time which was Star Wars and Star Trek pet stitches because he just went
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: Upon my reread, Eric Thurett is kind of disappointing.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: Claire Mott makes him a really big deal, but as soon as the imperial guard in the land or shawl, it's kind of like he's just forgotten.
- 14:12[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot more history to this guy but you have to look forward to the fringes and that's what we're going to be talking about today because he's deeply connected to a lot of X-Men lore, but mostly in kind of flashback stories or like references to older material.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: A Chapman, what are your thoughts on how Rachel Summers
- 14:31[SPEAKER_00]: and her uncle's Adam and Gabriel.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_05]: So in my read through of this stuff, I realized that I completely skipped over and pervolk in somehow, just completely missed that mini series.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_05]: So I got to double back and read that.
- 14:43[SPEAKER_05]: And I loved the take that they have with Rachel, where she is the only one who is really feeling the effects of that gray summer or that gray family massacre, because the summer's family isn't, especially with Alex being her leader, isn't super connected.
- 15:00[SPEAKER_05]: You know, they're kind of up there in space.
- 15:01[SPEAKER_05]: They're kind of a lot.
- 15:02[SPEAKER_05]: I don't really deal with them before the body shop.
- 15:05[SPEAKER_05]: And then when she comes back her soul interaction is with this thing like we said, the entire slaughter of her extended family.
- 15:12[SPEAKER_05]: I think that that's a perfect way to have this very queer coded character have a very valid reason for anyone looking from the outside in to want to go head to head with that big empiric force with that big.
- 15:25[SPEAKER_05]: Pigeon holding aspect that empires can have and how she just will never actually fit into that, especially being an alternate reality Phoenix wielder.
- 15:33[SPEAKER_05]: That's gonna be a great one.
- 15:34[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad you made that a bird metaphor for the CR.
- 15:36[SPEAKER_00]: That was very helpful.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, I love Rachel's antagonism with them.
- 15:40[SPEAKER_05]: I wish we would see more of that.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_05]: I wish she would go head to head with Iraqi or with whoever the current Iraqi is and try to find out that that secret alliance or secret cabal that is within the share empire.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_05]: I want to see more of that.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is a reference to ARAKI.
- 15:58[SPEAKER_00]: I pronounce that name ARAKI, because otherwise it sounds like you're from the country or act.
- 16:05[SPEAKER_05]: If that is for you, dude, it's, yeah.
- 16:07[SPEAKER_00]: Scotty, what is it about the summer's family that makes like readers both like kind of, okay, so when you mention this to like an X-Men fan and they know the lore, there's like a little like naughty like, oh, yeah, let me tell you about this crazy lore.
- 16:20[SPEAKER_00]: But also, it takes it too far sometimes.
- 16:23[SPEAKER_00]: Why are we obsessed with this intensity and like our deep nerd lore in the X-Men?
- 16:28[SPEAKER_02]: Hi, I really think how much you know about the summer's family tree and how you respond to it emotionally tells you a lot about your journey and to fandom because there are lots of people.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_02]: Rachel is one of my favorite characters and what I like to tell people is that.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_02]: When I'm talking about my favorite character is if I can tell the person is not, is new to the X-Men franchise.
- 16:48[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, oh, I really like the movies.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_02]: I'm like cyclops is my favorite character.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_02]: But if I meet an X-Men fan and like I really want to know just how deep it goes, it's all them, no, Rachel is my favorite character.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: Let me tell you about the alternate stories that she's been in and let me tell you about the time that she and Megan saved reality by accident.
- 17:06[SPEAKER_02]: So it's really fun to kind of go through and like it's a nice way to kind of see where other people are.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, also they just I think we all just keep going back to it because it feels so central like the heart of the X man is a soap opera and it's very fun to watch your very soap opera actors get their little bits and no chances to shine there is a massive story waiting to be told about that time Cyclops's parents playing got hit by that like she are ship and then Cyclops jumped out of the plane and like lost his memories when he hit his head.
- 17:34[SPEAKER_00]: Let me just tell you, I have stories to write, and I have a massive Kate Summers story.
- 17:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I think Kate Summers is such a huge part of the X-Men world.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: In the way that, like, Sharon Xavier is, and no one's ever used this character at all.
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I think there's so much, we've met, like, Corsair's parents, but we've never met Kate.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: Like, there's a whole story to be told.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: A chapter.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_05]: I do have a question for you all.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_05]: In your reading, did we ever figure out what the reason that the sheer empire has essentially the the spaceship that shoots down the summer's plane?
- 18:06[SPEAKER_05]: Do we know why that is?
- 18:08[SPEAKER_00]: Nope, it was just a ship on earth.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: There's never a direct reference provided readers if I'm wrong.
- 18:13[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me, but I wrote the sheer empire entry in the Marvel Handbook.
- 18:17[SPEAKER_00]: So I consider myself an
- 18:18[SPEAKER_00]: heard at least to a degree.
- 18:20[SPEAKER_00]: No, we've never learned that, but we do know that there were multiple Shiar bases on Earth.
- 18:24[SPEAKER_00]: One of them is the one Eric, the Reds living in.
- 18:26[SPEAKER_00]: We see later references to some that have been abandoned.
- 18:29[SPEAKER_00]: And over on the Patreon, we talk about a series called The Marvels.
- 18:33[SPEAKER_00]: They had a, the Shiar also had an outpost in the Jabari lands of Wakanda that, uh, there's some big crazy stories that haven't really been tied together.
- 18:41[SPEAKER_00]: Justin, when we look at the summer's family and the she are in the summary, who's the one character that takes it one step step too far for you?
- 18:48[SPEAKER_04]: Think about this one because when I think of the summer's family tree, I just have that picture of Charlie Day with the core keyboard and the red string.
- 18:56[SPEAKER_04]: Um, whatever I think of the family.
- 18:59[SPEAKER_04]: But as far as whoever takes it too far, I've got to give it to Adam Axe, just I see the ties and where he comes in kind of touching on what Scotty said.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_04]: It's really that determination of how well you know the X-Men and the soap opera level of the books versus like somebody whose casual and just watches the movies and or TV show.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like if you know you really know Justin, I cannot believe you did not want to have a moment to call out Volkan there when
- 19:28[SPEAKER_02]: too far.
- 19:31[SPEAKER_02]: The level of restraint epic.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: The baby that takes it one to far for me is a X man or Nate Grace child with frenety.
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's the one that is just one it's one too many.
- 19:42[SPEAKER_04]: That's one more, it's like, I feel like it could have been expanded on more, but really wasn't kind of felt like a wasted opportunity for me.
- 19:49[SPEAKER_04]: Is that the Greek?
- 19:50[SPEAKER_05]: Let's run a D have some peace.
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's like, it's like the monsters on me, baby.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, yeah, yeah, let's run a D have some peace.
- 19:57[SPEAKER_03]: It's gonna agree that depending on how you want to come at it, either Gabriel Summers or Adam X feels like
- 20:10[SPEAKER_03]: She are nonsense going on do we need a second one what's you know ripping out the fetus versus mixing up a genetic material and all of that but you know at a max technically came first these days I just didn't get a chance to.
- 20:25[SPEAKER_03]: get all that established until Gabriel Summers walled ston in and kind of stole his thunder.
- 20:30[SPEAKER_04]: So that's why picked out a mech's overvolcanoes because Adamick's was rumored where his Gabriel was confirmed before Adam's.
- 20:37[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to save this conversation for another time.
- 20:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just going to drop this atom bomb, but I think Gambit is a Summers brother legit.
- 20:44[SPEAKER_00]: Well, that's sort of first clear mod.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know who his birth parents are.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: He has kinetic energy
- 20:55[SPEAKER_05]: if any eternal it's going to be mr. sinister so in the eternal words of Randy Jackson it's going to be a note from me dog
- 21:05[SPEAKER_00]: Focusing on Eric the Red, again, Cyclops is the first one, but when we look at our character, his real name is Devon Shikari, and an easy read on the Shiar Royal classes, again, it's very game of thrones, there's houses competing for favor and who rules the iron throne or, you know, like the bird throne or whatever, it is they sit on on Chandalar.
- 21:25[SPEAKER_00]: The near-omany house has the power, but the siblings wore for the throne with each other, a never-ending battle that extends down to their children, and I want to be clear another massive story we've never been told is who occupied this throne before LaLandra and then DeKed took it over.
- 21:41[SPEAKER_00]: We know next to nothing about their parents, except that Death Bird murdered a mother and a sister, which resulted in her exile.
- 21:50[SPEAKER_00]: Death Bird is also an earlier evolutionary aspect of the shear.
- 21:55[SPEAKER_00]: She's born with wings under her arms where Lelander just has feathers on her arms, which is the more modern.
- 22:01[SPEAKER_00]: So there's some crazy shit about like the pre-generation of all this.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_00]: De Ken the Mad, who nearly destroyed the universe and whose bastard son is now Rolrak, or Electron from the Imperial Guard, who currently sits on the throne.
- 22:15[SPEAKER_00]: There's an Electron episode over on the Patreon this month, everyone, so I'll save my thoughts there.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: Deathbird, who has fucked so many mutant men and has had her name stricken from the records, and LaLandra, the third one, is the favorite one.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: known more for her diplomacy than her savagery.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: She our society has been well explored.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_00]: Art is banned, power and warfare are respected.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: Worlds are conquered, populations enslaved, and resources absorb.
- 22:43[SPEAKER_00]: And the edicts of the Majester or Majestrics are obeyed without question, whoever's on the throne commands everything.
- 22:50[SPEAKER_00]: They have been at war with the crey, with the scrolls, with the phoenix force itself, and all in the name of their gods, Shara, and Key 3.
- 22:58[SPEAKER_00]: And we're going to talk more about these gods in detail, a little later in this episode.
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: The Imperial Guard in this template quickly becomes the Knights of the Roundtable, the Imperial Forces.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they keep the peace.
- 23:09[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they go on intergalactic missions.
- 23:12[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they're used as the military force against disobedient worlds.
- 23:16[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes they go covert.
- 23:18[SPEAKER_00]: The members are kept in check as they represent the honor of their individual worlds all acquired by the ECR and all these characters are based off of Legion of superhero characters for those of you that don't know go see more on that on the electron episode but we'll be talking about these guys more on the main show in the coming year then we also have the she are death commandos the squad of assassins who commit wholesale slaughter their members are less noble and more scary weaponized versions also taken from other races.
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: There is the beautiful backdrop of Chandallar, but then there's all those CD back worlds and slave pits and prison planets that we so frequently see used and she are stories, which puts Devon Shikari as a member of a royal house of some kind.
- 24:01[SPEAKER_00]: He's risen to a prominent position earlier I called him Darth Vader, but in the game of thrones analysis it's almost like he's more little finger moving pieces around on the chest board but also very powerful.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: Later, we're going to discuss the color red in its connection to the Shear and this character in more depth, but Eric Dred is a crazy choice for this character as he's named after a real life viking.
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: So this is real history.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_00]: Hundreds of years ago, Eric Thorvald's son, the father of the later famous explorer, Leaf Ericsson, is known for discovering Greenland and naming the country.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_00]: He was exiled from Norway, banished because his dad committed murder, and he ended up growing up in Iceland, murdered guys there, and then got exiled himself.
- 24:44[SPEAKER_00]: So he put together a ship, sailed west, and found a new country, and he's easily the most famous Viking in history.
- 24:49[SPEAKER_00]: Now back to the Shiar, we flesh out these stories over many, many, many Marvel topics.
- 24:54[SPEAKER_00]: There's General Cardoom, and Erika, and Death Cry,
- 24:59[SPEAKER_00]: and that character Warbird from the Marvel series but also Warbird in the X-Men.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: There's Black Light and White Noise, the Maybe Children of Deathbird in the Imperial Guard.
- 25:09[SPEAKER_00]: There's the Skyart Hall, the Unforgiven, the Fraternity of Raptors, the Kin Crimson, Siries.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: Corvus Rukshir, Danger, who's connected to the Shiar, Logic Diamonds, Stargates, Negabams, and Starcrackers, which blow up planets and suns.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now in the late 90s, Magneto addresses Eric the Red and a surprise of a story in that weird trial of Gambit story, which I remember spat and gravel, but also Gambit's here and I think he's a summer's brother just saying,
- 25:40[SPEAKER_00]: Much more about the backstory of Shikari is added later, especially around the Summers Brothers, but we'll recount it as it's presented in the early Claremont comics for now and then get into more detail.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: DeKen has seized the throne, and our history of Eric Thurett is played out slowly.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: Let me hear your thoughts, Derek, on the Naramani family line of DeKen, Deathbird and Le Landra, who do you enjoy on the throne and why?
- 26:05[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, man, I mean, that's a little to question.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to say like, deathbird because it's exciting, but me as a person, I probably more for the Landra, like, I would want that type of ruler, I guess.
- 26:18[SPEAKER_01]: So it'd be great to have like have them, those three as like a solo series, too.
- 26:23[SPEAKER_01]: Just have their like family dynamic, like flushed out a little bit, but they all like trapped in some planes together, and they gotta talk to things without, be fun to watch.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: But also deathbird murdered their other sister.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_00]: These are crazy stories.
- 26:34[SPEAKER_00]: and possibly their mother.
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, and their mother.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_00]: Jay Cosmic, and then, uh, and then Chapman, do you have a favorite member of the Imperial Guard?
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: And is there a member you want to cause play as?
- 26:46[SPEAKER_04]: So my favorite member of the Imperial Guard, I do have this noted here, is Oracle.
- 26:50[SPEAKER_04]: She was the one that stood out to me the most at first, but I do also like starbolt, nightside, and manta.
- 26:57[SPEAKER_04]: I think they're all pretty cool as well.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_04]: Well, as for which one I would cosplay, that's a tough one.
- 27:04[SPEAKER_04]: I think looking at it, Cosmo seems the most fitting for my name, but as far as like appearance goes, I think Titan feels very cosplayable.
- 27:13[SPEAKER_05]: In terms of favorites, if you've seen my episode on the first book of the Mune Empire trilogy by Christopher Golden Siege, there is a chatman has the excellent podcast sub-textment, everyone.
- 27:25[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah, uh, we cover the the novels over there.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_05]: And if you've seen, uh, as we've listened to that first episode, you know that there is some subtext in there of a relationship between, I believe, it's Titan and Star Bolt.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_05]: So those two immediately shot up to the top of my list after that, because I just think that's such a fun pairing.
- 27:42[SPEAKER_05]: I also love, oh, I think
- 27:44[SPEAKER_05]: Manta is her name.
- 27:45[SPEAKER_05]: The one with the the very cool cape behind her with the old destiny S mask.
- 27:51[SPEAKER_05]: I've always loved her design and I've also always loved neutrons design.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_05]: I just read his the main neutrons death and this part of my my issues and I was gutted there, but those have those have been my top four for quite a while.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_05]: Oracle's up there as well, just with her design.
- 28:03[SPEAKER_05]: I think if I had to cosplay one of them, I'd probably go for Oracle or I would go for, I'd really like to see R1.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_05]: I also think the design of the Briniac inspired one is mentor is very fun.
- 28:15[SPEAKER_05]: So those are probably my cosplay choices, but my top four will always be neutron, Titan, Star Bolt, and Manta.
- 28:24[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone who didn't say Hassar is automatically disqualified.
- 28:28[SPEAKER_05]: She's fun.
- 28:29[SPEAKER_05]: I just would never want to cosplay her.
- 28:32[SPEAKER_00]: Scotty, what are your thoughts on the Eric the Red as little finger?
- 28:36[SPEAKER_00]: When we start to get into the idea of a game of thrones, what are your thoughts there?
- 28:41[SPEAKER_02]: I actually really liked that been for later, later era, Eric the Red.
- 28:46[SPEAKER_02]: Because you're right, really, in the original Claremont stuff, he shows up.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_02]: And most of the time, he's kind of like not very effective, like basically Cyclops shoots him and he runs away.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: So you watch, if they built him up as a big threat, but every Jamie actually gets
- 29:01[SPEAKER_02]: I liked the idea that the reason why he's dangerous and that we didn't always see in the past is he's able to manipulate people and kind of like do this wheeling and dealing and he does a little bit of that right at the beginning.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_02]: In Chris Claremont's early runs, so I like to also there was a just enough of a continuity thread a little piece so you could grab to make that make sense.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: Um, Austin, I think people genuinely suffer from what we call CR fatigue.
- 29:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I think this is an important conversation.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: The she has a little bit like weapon X, the Phoenix force.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_00]: There's like certain concepts that you see it show up and you're like again.
- 29:35[SPEAKER_00]: What is it about this empire that I think takes it a little too far?
- 29:38[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes, or feels a little overwhelming for people in your opinion.
- 29:41[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you're absolutely right.
- 29:42[SPEAKER_03]: It's one of those, it's not really a trope, but just settings that is perpetual, but it always is a company from a contingent of the fan base with a like, oh, I'm not again.
- 29:53[SPEAKER_03]: It's an interesting setup because it's so far removed from the core themes of the X-Men, especially at the time when Claremont and Cochrome first started introducing them.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_03]: The X-Men had dabbled a bit in sci-fi tropes,
- 30:09[SPEAKER_03]: and specifically like outer space alien stuff in the 60s original run, but like every comic did bad.
- 30:17[SPEAKER_03]: I mean the Marvel universe was lousy with like random one-off aliens that came to conquer earth and got scared off by comic book pictures.
- 30:25[SPEAKER_03]: They, I mean Claire
- 30:30[SPEAKER_03]: repulsion that Xavier does when he's like, oh, guess what?
- 30:33[SPEAKER_03]: I wasn't dead.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_03]: I was just preparing for this alien invasion.
- 30:36[SPEAKER_03]: And now I've telepathically forced them off and he ties that in with the with the, with the, the she are stuff that script read from that ex,
- 30:53[SPEAKER_03]: But it is, it's very much like now the X-Men are like Star Wars characters and they're often another another another planet fighting for this imperial throne on the behalf of this princess and you're like what does this have to do with like anti mutant hysteria and protecting a world that here fears and hates them and all that kind of stuff so they I think for a lot of people a little goes a long way because it just moves them so far away from kind of their core theme.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_04]: I did not realize how prominent the she are we're going back on the issues that I read like just seeing how much they appeared in Claremont's run I do think the issue with the fatigue we do see what the she are is like we lose that consistency we had Claremont puts so much and build so much onto them so then after he left and other people took them on we kind of lost a little bit of that.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and see, here's my quick answer to CR for tea.
- 31:45[SPEAKER_00]: If it's a great story, I'm all in as long as it's a 100% well told excellent here for it.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_00]: It's fun to see the the flop around's happening all the time.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_05]: I think one thing about it, too, is that the she are in such an odd place being so Xman specific that you either keep them as their own separate thing that the Xman can go and explore and you're stuck with them not necessarily not necessarily making sense with.
- 32:09[SPEAKER_05]: how they should function within the greater star wars, within the greater cosmic marvel universe, or use do things like the later 90s with the event where Earth becomes a prison, maximum security, where you do connect them into the Marvel cosmic stuff, and then you're stuck with the X-Men going on a Marvel cosmic story for how long, and you have to tie in all the other history, and then they're warring with the crey and all that stuff, and then it spans out into this massive story that you have to follow up on.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I mean, so many key X-Men moments connected to them.
- 32:42[SPEAKER_00]: We mentioned danger before.
- 32:44[SPEAKER_00]: They are the ones who put Professor X into the clone body.
- 32:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like, there's so many stories that directly involve them.
- 32:52[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we'll have a whole little Andra episode one day as well.
- 32:55[SPEAKER_00]: Like, she's an amazing character.
- 32:56[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, we're gonna start with, we're gonna start by focusing on Eric Dred, Devon Chikari.
- 33:01[SPEAKER_00]: through kind of sectional stories.
- 33:03[SPEAKER_00]: Each one of my guests has presented a little section here.
- 33:06[SPEAKER_00]: So when we first meet him, DeKen has seized the throne and our history of Eric Dred is played out slowly.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: But we're gonna talk about DeKen himself.
- 33:13[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna have Jake Osmick here.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_00]: Begin with where the Shiar history lesson for everybody.
- 33:17[SPEAKER_00]: Focus on DeKen and Shikari in the early appearances.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: But I wanna just throw out one of the first things we see this character say on the page, written by Claremont.
- 33:26[SPEAKER_00]: is as he's boasting.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_00]: I am power incarnate.
- 33:31[SPEAKER_00]: Remember what the phoenix's famous for saying later?
- 33:34[SPEAKER_00]: Claire Munt had some ideas at his brain.
- 33:36[SPEAKER_00]: Jay Cosmic, let me turn it over to you.
- 33:38[SPEAKER_00]: The content
- 33:49[SPEAKER_00]: Uncanny X-Men 476 and 477, which is in the middle of a huge, long-share story, but we're going to keep a focus done to cad and chicari.
- 33:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then Cyclops volume 3, number 3.
- 34:02[SPEAKER_00]: I'm always grateful for homework, doing friends.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks for coming back, Jay.
- 34:05[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you for having me.
- 34:06[SPEAKER_04]: So again, this was a good little refresh.
- 34:09[SPEAKER_04]: And something that made me appreciate these stories more.
- 34:13[SPEAKER_04]: Covering X-Men 97.
- 34:14[SPEAKER_04]: So this is where Eric, the red makes his first appearance.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_04]: This is during the Shiar Empire Civil War where Lil Landra discovered Dickens intend to seize power of the McCran crystal for himself.
- 34:25[SPEAKER_04]: If I mispronounce McCran, M-Cran, however you say it.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_00]: I think that I say M-Cron, but however people say it, there's how they're going to say it, it's great.
- 34:34[SPEAKER_04]: So, LaLandra was making her way to Earth and to Professor X and Decand ordered Chikari, or Eric the Red, prevent LaLandra from arriving on Earth.
- 34:44[SPEAKER_04]: Chikari studied Xavier and the X-Men and adopted the identity Eric the Red.
- 34:50[SPEAKER_04]: So, Eric located Lorna Dane and Havik, because Lorna is not going by Polaris yet.
- 34:56[SPEAKER_04]: who were retired from the X-Men at the time.
- 34:58[SPEAKER_04]: He placed some both under his mental domination and when professed directs prepared to depart from the Kennedy International Airport to visit Pietro Corbo, who's another character, Eric and his agents are
- 35:11[SPEAKER_04]: or let me restart that Eric and his agents attack.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_04]: So while Eric the Red End Plaris and Havic cause chaos and destruction, Xavier's plane still takes off.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_04]: So more of the X-Men arrive as backup and Eric ends the standoff and leaves with Havic and Plaris.
- 35:29[SPEAKER_04]: So X-Men 107 and 109 is where we kind of see Eric the Red Next but we also get a bit more
- 35:36[SPEAKER_04]: to Ken, but basically the X-Men are transported through a stargate by Phoenix, and the X-Men find themselves on the planet that is home to the McCran crystal, surrounded by the Imperial Guard,
- 35:55[SPEAKER_04]: but still a really cool.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_04]: Eric is holding a Landra hostage with Dicken, and this is where Le Landra reveals his real name that being Shikari, or refers to him as Shikari.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_04]: So a battle commence is between the X-Men and the Imperial Guard, where Le Landra is almost sacrificed to the sole leader before
- 36:14[SPEAKER_04]: Night crawler jumps in and saves her.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_04]: We see what the sole leader does to somebody else, but basically, I think it's I think it's technically the sole drinker.
- 36:24[SPEAKER_04]: You're right.
- 36:25[SPEAKER_04]: It is the sole drinker.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_04]: All right.
- 36:26[SPEAKER_00]: I'm disgusting.
- 36:29[SPEAKER_04]: It's this green creature like a tentacle tongue coming out of its mouth with like little fangs on the end.
- 36:35[SPEAKER_04]: You definitely need the visual there for that.
- 36:36[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the soul drinker was unleashed by Decan and she reveals to the X-Men that he plans to use the McCrand crystal to gain absolute power, which is why she fled to Earth.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_04]: So the start of jammers do arrive and help the X-Men against the Imperial Guard when the McCrand crystal powers up and reality
- 36:58[SPEAKER_04]: doesn't exist for a moment.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_04]: Peter Corbow warns that should the cosmic blinks continue, um, basically everyone will seize to exist.
- 37:06[SPEAKER_04]: So we don't see Eric the red and X been one-oh-eight.
- 37:09[SPEAKER_04]: Um, essentially the Macrant crystal is going crazy and it's effects are felt throughout the galaxy.
- 37:14[SPEAKER_04]: Um, you see different heroes reacting to it on earth.
- 37:16[SPEAKER_04]: You see yellow jacket and red Richards.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_04]: Um, so yeah, the X men are attacked by Jeff, a guardian of the crystal, although
- 37:25[SPEAKER_04]: He is defeated by Banshee when he realizes that Jeff is actually a robot and fried his circuits, which I know we'll talk about Jeff later, I don't want to get too much into that and spoil too much.
- 37:35[SPEAKER_04]: The X-Men star gemmers and Dekan are transported inside the crystal.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_04]: The Cliffs known version, the universe is saved by the Phoenix, although the crystal's power puts Dekan into a coma.
- 37:46[SPEAKER_04]: Once the universe is saved, the X-Men return home.
- 37:49[SPEAKER_04]: along with Le Landra, who is now exiled from the Sh.
- 37:53[SPEAKER_04]: R. Empire in that moment.
- 37:55[SPEAKER_04]: So we do have Eric the Red mentioned briefly in X-Men 109, in passing after the X-Men return to the mansion, where Cyclops asks Moira and Banshee if you see him have it, and Moira says that he and Lorna Dane wanted to take some time to themselves after they were freed from Eric the Red's mind control.
- 38:19[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, so why retells them that gear lawn and can't roll my arms, I can do lawn and Jamie, but not Lorna Dane.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_04]: Um, so have it and Flarr is one at some time to themselves after they were freed from Eric Thored's Vine Control.
- 38:35[SPEAKER_04]: So they went to help Jimmy Madroves repair the lab on Mir Island.
- 38:39[SPEAKER_04]: Um, later, Closs's Storm and Banshee, and Wyrner and Tigard have a picnic, and Wolverine is in the forest tracking adobe before they are attacked by weapon alpha, who is Guardian, but that is a remainder of the issue.
- 38:51[SPEAKER_04]: Kind of cuts away from the CR stuff and more and two.
- 38:53[SPEAKER_04]: other stories and then classic X been 14 so these are a reprints of X been 17 and 108 with additional pages included as you would expect from classic X men, but in the backup story for 14, we have a backup story where princess Le Landra is I don't know why keep getting tongue tied on Le Landra.
- 39:11[SPEAKER_04]: But she's prisoner on one of her brother's ships, and is about to be executed for attempting to thwart his plans.
- 39:18[SPEAKER_04]: DeKent himself only appears as a holographic projection in this story.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_04]: But basically, LaLendra is broken free by her followers, and she escapes in a small scout ship.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_04]: Suddenly, she hears a voice calling her name, she forms a psychic rapport with Professor X.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'll just add a little bit here.
- 39:37[SPEAKER_00]: LaLandres part of like a resistance group called the Pathfinders and the their entire like rebel force including someone who almost it's giving that like oh she's my best friend, but maybe also my lover like they all lose their lives saving her she's the only survivor from the escape attempt.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_00]: So it's like a really tragic opening for her backstory.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so like for this, it takes a while and just some time to find herself again, only to learn that in the meantime, the troops who broke her feet free were killed.
- 40:05[SPEAKER_04]: She decides that's her only hope of stopping to can lies within Professor X and the X men.
- 40:10[SPEAKER_04]: and she begins her journey to Earth.
- 40:12[SPEAKER_04]: So that in classic X-Men 15, we get a little more of a look into Chris Summers or Corsair.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_04]: Basically, we see that he was kidnapped by DeKen and lost his family.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_04]: We get a bit more covered on that in the other issues that I cover as well.
- 40:28[SPEAKER_04]: Corsair basically tried to fly to him and punish, tried to, um, fight to Ken and basically to Ken murdered Kate and had Chris sent to the mine, mine world, El Sabar.
- 40:42[SPEAKER_04]: I hope I'm pronouncing that right.
- 40:43[SPEAKER_04]: Corsair and three other prisoners escape, killing the guards who took them in, aware though that there is no way off the planet, unless they had a pilot.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_04]: So Corsair offers his skills as a pilot and asks the others to refer
- 40:59[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, there's a bit more in there too.
- 41:01[SPEAKER_04]: Basically, there's a cat like prisoner who's taken in and later revealed to be Hebsaba.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_04]: The other three prisoners are the remaining star gemmers.
- 41:09[SPEAKER_04]: So then X been one five five and one fifty six.
- 41:12[SPEAKER_04]: Cyclops is furious at Corsair that his identity was kept to secret.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_04]: So Corsair does explain that when their plane was attacked, he saw the boys parachutes catch fire and assumes they just died.
- 41:25[SPEAKER_04]: Um, we do hear that Cyclops's mom and was executed for Corsair's eyes and he was holding to slavery.
- 41:31[SPEAKER_04]: So we do get a little bit more of that by some in Xman 156.
- 41:34[SPEAKER_04]: That's when we get a bit more coverage on the story and a little bit more of a background.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_04]: So while Professor X is taken captive by Deathbird and held in a cell with um,
- 41:47[SPEAKER_04]: You know, they take advantage of that.
- 41:49[SPEAKER_04]: We have Corsair's narration, which is as followed.
- 41:52[SPEAKER_04]: So Corsair was an Air Force test pilot returning from leave in Alaska.
- 41:57[SPEAKER_04]: A camping trip with Scott's grandparents to join Project Mercury as an astronaut.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_04]: The family, Chris, Catherine Ann, Scott and Alex were flying an old, the Highland Mosquito that Chris had rebuilt.
- 42:09[SPEAKER_04]: They were following the coasts south of Cape Yacataga, where they got a panic call from Anchorage about an unidentified
- 42:15[SPEAKER_04]: Contact, heading their way.
- 42:16[SPEAKER_04]: Next thing we knew, it was right on top of them.
- 42:18[SPEAKER_04]: Chris tried to report the sighting and the ship opened fire.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_04]: He was the best pilot alive flying one of the finest birds ever built.
- 42:25[SPEAKER_04]: That combination, plus a lot of luck, saved to them during during the initial cell vote.
- 42:30[SPEAKER_04]: Unfortunately, the mosquito was a wooden aircraft that proved to be their undoing.
- 42:34[SPEAKER_04]: A near-miss, scorched,掉ia fuelage, and the dogfight was as good as over.
- 42:38[SPEAKER_04]: They were...
- 42:39[SPEAKER_04]: Overland and strapped Scott into the lone parachute she could find wrapped him around his little brother, Alex, and shut the boys out of the hatch, but the sky was full of blaster fire, a bolt clipped their shoot, and the canopy started to burn.
- 42:52[SPEAKER_04]: Help lists the parents watched them fall, imagining they could hear the boys screams.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_04]: They thought they'd die too until a teleport beam yanks them aboard the Starship.
- 42:59[SPEAKER_04]: It was a GR scouting mission to them and in Chris for zoological specimens, representing the higher orders of life on Earth.
- 43:06[SPEAKER_04]: They were separated on the Imperial throne world, Chris escaped the slave pens and set out to find her.
- 43:12[SPEAKER_04]: She was with Emperor DeKen, who was trying to force himself on her.
- 43:15[SPEAKER_04]: Chris's mistake was trying to kill him with his bare hands.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_04]: Instead of shooting him down, where he stood, guards came to DeKen's rescue.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_04]: They wanted to execute him on the spot.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_04]: DeKen had other ideas.
- 43:26[SPEAKER_04]: He asked if the female was important to Chris and if he would die for her when Chris agreed DeKen mocked his noble sentiments, the penalty for his crimes is death by slow torture.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_04]: But he wanted him to suffer.
- 43:37[SPEAKER_04]: So he stabbed his wife in front of Chris's eyes.
- 43:40[SPEAKER_04]: So then we get to X-Men deadly Genesis 6 and Cyclops 3.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_04]: I kind of need to tie those two together.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_04]: So in deadly Genesis 6, we get Vulcan's origin, which, again, is tied to the Shira Empire and to Dekan, where Dekan was ruler of the Shira Empire at that time.
- 43:58[SPEAKER_04]: And we see that they kidnapped Corsair and Catherine.
- 44:02[SPEAKER_04]: Corsair made an unsuccessful escape attempt which resulted in DeKen killing Catherine and ripping his unborn child Vulcan from her room as punishment.
- 44:11[SPEAKER_04]: Corsair was enslaved and DeKen used using shear technology was able to keep Vulcan alive in hopes of making him into a slave one day.
- 44:18[SPEAKER_04]: As Vulcan grew up, he was able to escape from DeKen and make his way back to Earth where he found Professor X and Wyrumic Tiger.
- 44:25[SPEAKER_04]: Shikari is briefly mentioned in Vulcan's origin in deadly genesis where Vulcan was placed in an incubation accelerator, which was common for slave breeding among the Shiar at the time, and Shikari required many slaves.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_04]: And then in Cyclops 3, you see Dicken and Flashbacks, where Corsair explains to Kid Cyclops that he was murdered by his brother that being Vulcan, because Kid Cyclops didn't know who Vulcan was.
- 44:50[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, can you continue to explain that his mother Catherine
- 44:53[SPEAKER_04]: was murdered by Tekken while carrying Scott's brother.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_04]: Their brother Gabriel survived and took the name Vulcan.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_04]: He explains that he was one of the most powerful beings, the galaxy ever encountered, and he was fueled by rage and madness.
- 45:05[SPEAKER_04]: He took the lives of countless sentient beings, but in the end he died as he lived because karma is a bitch, not as
- 45:12[SPEAKER_04]: And also another note, Cyclops III, Orgisart, Russell Daughterman, Love His Work.
- 45:17[SPEAKER_04]: And then finally, my introduction to the GR and to picking up comics regularly.
- 45:24[SPEAKER_04]: Rise and follow D.C.R.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_04]: Empire.
- 45:25[SPEAKER_04]: It was like the first storyline I read and continued picking up comics.
- 45:29[SPEAKER_04]: So this story has a bit of a special place for me, but read it for the war path and then stay stay for the space drama.
- 45:35[SPEAKER_04]: See,
- 45:35[SPEAKER_04]: I was ready to pull R is some just I thought she looked cool.
- 45:39[SPEAKER_04]: I just thought hey the green hair the all green outfit I'm here for it, but yeah and rise of the sheer rise and fall of the sheer empire to can is brought out of his coma thanks to the help of his followers the sheer empire had lost its former glory.
- 45:53[SPEAKER_04]: and with everything happening the last few years.
- 45:56[SPEAKER_00]: And although this was treated lightly, this was a big revelation in the comics at the time, because to Ken at the beginning, we're told he's dead.
- 46:03[SPEAKER_00]: And we're like 40 years later, and they're like, oh, actually he's been in a coma this whole time.
- 46:07[SPEAKER_00]: Which is crazy.
- 46:08[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, I appreciate the continuity, but while most people were happy with the land or being on the throne, there were many more who wanted to come back as a rampur, which some of the parallels with current politics, but I digress.
- 46:23[SPEAKER_04]: After DeKen was released from his coma and his prison, a civil war erupted between LaLandra and DeKen sides where there were any other throats in full-scale war where the X-Men were caught in the middle.
- 46:37[SPEAKER_04]: The X-Men were there to try and capture Vulcan.
- 46:40[SPEAKER_04]: He was on his way to the Shiar Empire and make them above all and above all DeKen paid for what they had done to his mother mainly.
- 46:48[SPEAKER_04]: telling her, although Vulcan wanted to kill Dekennet first, Dekennet came up with the plan.
- 46:52[SPEAKER_04]: He offered Vulcan to join him in his quest for absolute ruler of the galaxy as his second in command.
- 46:57[SPEAKER_04]: He also gave his blessings to the marriage between Vulcan and his sister Deathbird, making Vulcan a member of the family.
- 47:03[SPEAKER_04]: So Vulcan accepted and Dekennet thought, you know, he was invincible with the powerful ally in Vulcan.
- 47:09[SPEAKER_04]: Although his enthusiasm will not last long, on a minute after Vulcan and Deathbird were married, Vulcan turned on DeKen and Kildens, which deserved.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_04]: Being the next in line as a male member of the royal family, Vulcan became the new emperor of the Shia Empire.
- 47:24[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of wild history mixed in here.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_00]: A couple of things that I want to point out just again, storytellers, when Cyclops first dresses as Eric Dred, it's to save Lord of Dane, who's been taken by Mezmero, who's being bust around by a magneto robot at the time.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_00]: to the city of mutants in order to get her out.
- 47:42[SPEAKER_00]: And then the first thing Devon Shikari does on the page is grab Lorna Dane and havoc, but also reverse magneto and the others from baby form into the adult form.
- 47:54[SPEAKER_00]: On the topic of Decan and this is interesting, there's a couple of mad kings.
- 47:58[SPEAKER_00]: In Game of Thrones, there's always reference to the mad king of the past, like Eris, which we see like a run up and quite often.
- 48:06[SPEAKER_00]: But Charles the Sixth of France, who ruled from 1368 to 1422, was a charismatic promising young ruler who turned into like paranoia and erratic insanity, which kind of mirrors Charles the Sixth of England.
- 48:24[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of delusional shit that goes on there.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_00]: We also have Henry the Sixth, who ruled from 1421 to 1471.
- 48:32[SPEAKER_00]: incapacitated mentally unstable king who's catastrophic mental illness.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: And we governance ended up in a civil war that overthrew his dynasty.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_00]: But my argument is that Decan is just Lord Farquad from Shrek.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_00]: I do see the parallels with that.
- 48:51[SPEAKER_00]: When we start to look at Devon Shikari a little bit more, you have to start looking in the fringes in order to get Much of his leg motivation and this is where I'm having my friend Derek Nichols jump into mostly 90s Marvel comics as we talk about Adam X the crystal claws and then a buddy.
- 49:10[SPEAKER_00]: I'm sorry the kin crimson which I know is a much more intense conversation The assigned material here is X force annual two X men volume to 38 and 39
- 49:20[SPEAKER_00]: and 41.
- 49:21[SPEAKER_00]: Captain Marvel, the volume three, numbers two through four.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: This is Genus Bell.
- 49:27[SPEAKER_00]: Captain Marvel, volume four, number 14, focusing on blood wing.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_00]: Then we jumped to the modern X-Men legend series one and two.
- 49:35[SPEAKER_00]: And Steve Orlando's marauders, numbers one through five.
- 49:38[SPEAKER_00]: And Derek, I know this was an encyclopedia here.
- 49:40[SPEAKER_00]: So thank you for taking this journey.
- 49:42[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was a fun one for sure.
- 49:44[SPEAKER_01]: So do you listen,
- 49:46[SPEAKER_01]: The Shah are known throughout the universe as a mighty avian like race that leads with strength integrity and at times brutality.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_01]: Tonight I will regal you of some of the more planned us signed communities within their Imperium whose origin stemed millions of years ago.
- 49:58[SPEAKER_01]: The King Crimson, Shepherds of the Shah history, Good Bolt the Good and the Bad, the sect of the Crystal Clause, who fight for their ruler that they think legitimately holds the throne, and Adam X, the most totally streamed radity that has ever rocked ability and long blonde hair.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_01]: We started our story billions of years ago when the Shia were just a nomadic race traveling through space and a fraction of their strength.
- 50:17[SPEAKER_01]: They stumbled upon Earth and an advanced mutant race called race living in a place called threshold.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_01]: These early Shia are planned to raid the mutants, but the mutants fought back.
- 50:26[SPEAKER_01]: It was a slaughter for the Shia.
- 50:28[SPEAKER_01]: Through this, the Krin Kinsumkin crimson was born.
- 50:31[SPEAKER_01]: They made a pact to keep the great shames of the Shia hidden.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_01]: This experience itself is number one the lists on that list.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_01]: The first blood spilled.
- 50:39[SPEAKER_01]: Over time, the experiments that I introduced on other races genes create hard and wet skin where they can construct things of red hard light with their thoughts.
- 50:47[SPEAKER_01]: This was also another great shame of theirs.
- 50:49[SPEAKER_01]: This gives them their crimson color.
- 50:52[SPEAKER_01]: Eric the Red is a member of the crimson kid.
- 50:55[SPEAKER_01]: They hide amongst the Shia and only make their presence known when extremely necessary.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_01]: Their objective is to keep these 10 great shames from their ruler so that they can govern with their vision and not dwell on the past bruises against their history.
- 51:07[SPEAKER_01]: This also allows them to control the image of the Shia or to the rest of the universe.
- 51:11[SPEAKER_01]: Each year the share, upload their history into a beating called The Chronicle and have done so for millions of years.
- 51:16[SPEAKER_01]: This person was part of the original rating party set to Earth.
- 51:19[SPEAKER_01]: They have also kept an eye on Earth, even testing it every once in a while, as seen by the battle between Eric the Red and the X-Men.
- 51:25[SPEAKER_01]: The kid also has a crack.
- 51:26[SPEAKER_01]: This is a prison where it keeps individuals that might let these shames out to the public, as well as many members of the fraternity of the raptors.
- 51:33[SPEAKER_01]: In recent events, the kin and its shames were made known to magic tricks Zandra, where she decided to leave the Shia on transparency.
- 51:40[SPEAKER_01]: She was killed by the kin and later resurrected by her father.
- 51:43[SPEAKER_01]: After this, the kin crimson are currently being hunted down through the Imperium.
- 51:48[SPEAKER_01]: The kin crimson have a connection with the sheer religious sect known as the crystal cause.
- 51:52[SPEAKER_01]: This sect believes that the descendants of Deken are the rightful heir to the throne of the empire.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_01]: The problem is that no one believes that Ken had children.
- 52:00[SPEAKER_01]: More to come on that on a second.
- 52:01[SPEAKER_01]: This air is called the forsaken one and is believed to be believed to be bred to rule the Imperium.
- 52:08[SPEAKER_01]: Their catchphrases by the light of the mcr on due to the fact that they want to continue decends.
- 52:13[SPEAKER_01]: The Ken's plans on bathing the mcr crystals lay across the galaxy to strengthen this year's rule.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_01]: One other specific tenant about this religion is that the crystal claws believe that a person's soul can only get in heaven by lifetime of service to the crystal or by dying in an act in the name of the crystal.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_01]: Bloodwing could save his sister, Calendar, her soul by the ceremony of purging, which meant killing the person that did not allow her transition to heaven.
- 52:52[SPEAKER_01]: During the battle between legacy and bloodwing, legacy died and the crystal that bloodwing wore on his neck, blood, and collect Calendar's soul could be seen floating away.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: This crystal is obviously an homage to the M-prong.
- 53:02[SPEAKER_01]: Now that man, the Eric, the writer of the obsessed with, the forsaken one is a mutual hybrid that was birthed on a
- 53:08[SPEAKER_01]: Dickens experimentation with his own jeans and that of a human woman's name Catherine Summers.
- 53:12[SPEAKER_01]: His name is Adam Beck's.
- 53:13[SPEAKER_01]: He has the ability to ignite electrolytes and a person's blood supply when oxidized, but he can also use it to heal like he was, like he did with the human, and could suddenly his grandfather fill up summers and an airplane at crash.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: He can also ignite his own blood to move his superhuman speed.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_01]: His powers also do not work on the summer's line.
- 53:31[SPEAKER_01]: He is pointy years and the markings are on his eyes that looks like he's wearing mascara and he's been crying a little bit.
- 53:35[SPEAKER_01]: Adam makes a group on a planet called Charras Siraw by raised by a farming in Johnette who was a former personal guard of the Empire to take Emperor to Ken.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_01]: This planet was where all of those loyal to the Ken were exiled.
- 53:47[SPEAKER_01]: The crimson claws rightfully assume that the forsaken one would be on this planet and when it's inhabitants didn't want to give up Adam, Eric, the red gas to everybody on it.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: Luckily Adam had access to apparently the only life ship available.
- 53:58[SPEAKER_01]: Adam was then on Earth, and his memories were faulty.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_01]: He was tortured by the thought of not knowing his past and wanted to find his family.
- 54:04[SPEAKER_01]: But Eric the Red was obsessed with him.
- 54:06[SPEAKER_01]: And captured Adam X and brainwashed him for a couple of months in his area.
- 54:09[SPEAKER_01]: He sent him down the Earth to fight legacy and the orders him to kill him with an extreme prejudice.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_01]: Legacy or Captain Marvel ultimately frees Adam X of his brainwashed him by popping into the negative zone and then works together to fight Eric the Red.
- 54:20[SPEAKER_01]: Adam X likes his skin and through his immune powers and those met negabans called Eric the Red and his whole area of crimson claws to blow up.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_01]: And does not want anything to do with the phonetics of the crimson cloths.
- 54:30[SPEAKER_01]: He is afraid of fulfilling his destiny of being man responsible for killing every mutant on the planet.
- 54:34[SPEAKER_01]: Under his agreement with Manchester's Leandro, he had the super guardian oracle erased everyone's mind of his existence.
- 54:39[SPEAKER_01]: It is now 24 to his own extreme life.
- 54:42[SPEAKER_01]: And that, my dear listeners, are just some of the secret tales of the share.
- 54:45[SPEAKER_01]: Some come to light, others going back into darkness, but these stories show us how the complexity of life and the vast impure am.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of these.
- 54:51[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of alliteration and that was so great.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_00]: Derek, what was it like jumping into these worlds?
- 54:58[SPEAKER_00]: What other genres did they remind you of?
- 55:00[SPEAKER_00]: The crystal clause automatically makes me go Steven Universe just a little bit.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_01]: Ah, well, I haven't got you gonna hate me.
- 55:06[SPEAKER_01]: Like, if we're not talking about RuPaul's Drag Race or both of the Vampire Slayer, I already have some to think.
- 55:10[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if any of these references.
- 55:12[SPEAKER_01]: So.
- 55:13[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, Steven the universe, totally right near that.
- 55:15[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I actually enjoyed it because I remember as growing up in the 90s, I remember Adam Axe on the page then and he was a very interesting character and enjoyed his powers and how they worked.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I guess I'm a sucker for marketing because he was all spiky and he did have a toy.
- 55:33[SPEAKER_01]: So, um, it was cool.
- 55:34[SPEAKER_01]: I enjoyed the opportunity to get to know more about his backstory.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: And, uh, who he is, um, there's a lot of controversy about Steve Orlando's Marauder series from cricoa.
- 55:43[SPEAKER_00]: It's dense, but it's so deeply well researched.
- 55:46[SPEAKER_00]: It weaves together a lot of sheer threats that people don't even realize are there.
- 55:50[SPEAKER_00]: For example, the hard skin is that ability to project images as if it's almost like songbirds power where she can create like a constructs,
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, but it's based on the user's ability to think of things.
- 56:01[SPEAKER_00]: This is directly what Sarisa's power is.
- 56:04[SPEAKER_00]: Sarisa's raised in this kind of warrior society, which is what Warbird, the character from Wolverine in the X-Men is also raised in the banning of art is a theme for both characters like through military action.
- 56:15[SPEAKER_00]: Steve also gives us Eric the red series is like a red energy and this whole like uh kin crimson there's a very obscure member of the imperial guard called Delphos who's a like a future seer who is one of the kin crimson so she's like there the whole time.
- 56:31[SPEAKER_00]: Then we have the secret houses behind it all with Eric key.
- 56:34[SPEAKER_00]: Uh I'm again go listen to the fraternity of raptors episode because that's different.
- 56:38[SPEAKER_00]: The wet skin is also brought in which is a bastardization of symbiote's
- 56:43[SPEAKER_00]: And the symbiotes from that Zix has now bonded with Warbird from Wolverine in the X-Men by the end of that story And then there's the 90s of it all characters like Bloodwing and the way that they fit into all of this Derek was there was there any particular part there were years just like oh my god, it's too much
- 56:59[SPEAKER_01]: I did have to read the Marauders issues like two or three times really grasp what was going on because it involved like time travel, because tempo is involved and yeah, but like you said, it was actually what's like understood it.
- 57:11[SPEAKER_01]: It was super interesting and kind of again, this was very the section you gave me was very much like an anthropological study on the share.
- 57:19[SPEAKER_00]: And there's some glorious Cassandra know the moments in that Merracee.
- 57:24[SPEAKER_01]: And I've actually never really read any of the chapters that those series of Captain Marvel and those were really great as well.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_01]: And the fight scenes between Adamax and Captain Marvel are pretty great ladies and one point where he's like pulling Adamax by his like pulling him up in the air and he's like I don't want to be around you because you keep cutting me because your uniform is too sharp.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_01]: So it was it was a pretty pretty can't be 90 stuff.
- 57:45[SPEAKER_00]: But both characters, once she are one creed who've been artificially aged, yeah, parents and legacy characters in an odd way.
- 57:52[SPEAKER_00]: Adam, that was really fun to make your brain around.
- 57:55[SPEAKER_00]: I almost want to ask you where you would see him fitting into the X-Men world if he was like a regular character.
- 58:00[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, like in the current lineup, or you mean like, wow, I want to see, I mean, I want to see him on the star jammers, right?
- 58:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's fascinating.
- 58:07[SPEAKER_00]: Adam, Max with Corsair alone.
- 58:09[SPEAKER_01]: But it'd be cool, like, I mean, I'm not the biggest Wolverine fan, but having him around Wolverine and the powers to get literally pretty great.
- 58:15[SPEAKER_00]: So, interesting, interesting.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you for taking that deep Lord eye with me.
- 58:19[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the share are always talking about their gods and their culture.
- 58:23[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't want thought that I don't know if it's pertinent to the conversation.
- 58:25[SPEAKER_01]: And just in Adam Max's first appearance, his word bubbles, that I'm not saying that correctly, what is the name for those things?
- 58:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the word bubbles.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, have like a pink backing to them and then they're never seen again.
- 58:38[SPEAKER_01]: So I just thought that was an interesting like choice for the first for the first destroy red and also he and sometimes he has to say the word burn for his powers to activate because in the Captain Marvel run he got interrupted in the middle of saying it and he couldn't trigger his powers but I thought was also kind of unnecessary.
- 58:58[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, he's an interesting character.
- 58:59[SPEAKER_00]: He deserves a Patreon if I do it you're invited because
- 59:04[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, this year are constantly talking about their gods and culture.
- 59:07[SPEAKER_00]: Let's take some time to understand what that actually means.
- 59:10[SPEAKER_00]: Austin Gorton is here to talk to us about Shara and K3.
- 59:14[SPEAKER_00]: The actual appearances of these characters are Avengers Volume 5 No.
- 59:18[SPEAKER_00]: 2, assault on new Olympus No.
- 59:22[SPEAKER_00]: 1 and Mighty Thor Volume 2 15 through 19.
- 59:25[SPEAKER_00]: None of those being X-Men books, so again, this shits all over the place.
- 59:29[SPEAKER_00]: But there's mentions all over the place, a couple of key spaces, uncanny X-Men 343-345, X-Men volume 289, X-Man, annual 1997, Emperor Vulcan, War of Kings, Realm of Kings, Imperial Guard, Infinity, Wolverine in the X-Men, annual 1, New Mutants, Volume 4-1 and 5, and more recently the Imperial series.
- 59:51[SPEAKER_00]: So these are invectives often used, but who are these people?
- 59:55[SPEAKER_00]: Let me turn it over to Austin.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_03]: Thanks, Chad.
- 59:57[SPEAKER_03]: And yeah, your your summation of mentions is even just a fraction because the she are referred to these to the way we might say like, you know, God dammit or, you know, things like that.
- 1:00:08[SPEAKER_03]: It's it's Sharaan, key three preserved us that's there there are, they're most often exclamation, perhaps is appropriate for a pair of religious deities, research into Sharaan, key three involves many Byzantine twists and turns and
- 1:00:26[SPEAKER_03]: lots of hearsay and guesswork particularly on the creative side of things.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_03]: As you said, they don't actually show up as like physical beings interacting with the plot in very many stories.
- 1:00:40[SPEAKER_03]: The first time that that happened is a Sultan New Olympus, which is in 2010.
- 1:00:45[SPEAKER_00]: If I'm remembering the first time we see them physically, is the Star Jammer's Limited Series that warns us.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, series.
- 1:00:52[SPEAKER_00]: where there's like a couple of golden statues of them in the back.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: Correct.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yep.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's some iconography that pops up in a few places prior to that, but that assault onion limb, Olympus is the first time that they're like talking to people and interacting with characters and stuff.
- 1:01:08[SPEAKER_03]: And that's part of the whole, uh,
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_03]: storyline that was going on in incredible hercules at the time where I believe is the Japanese god Amatsu Mikoboshi was running around killing deities and doing a whole god war thing and he killed Shara and Kithri as part of that story.
- 1:01:27[SPEAKER_03]: We'd never really find out how they come back
- 1:01:31[SPEAKER_03]: other than a general, you know, their gods.
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_03]: So they probably can do that sort of thing.
- 1:01:36[SPEAKER_03]: The next time we see them again as characters directly interacting with things, is in the mighty Thor series.
- 1:01:45[SPEAKER_03]: So this is when Jane Foster was Thor.
- 1:01:48[SPEAKER_03]: And this was what, I didn't write down the date.
- 1:01:52[SPEAKER_03]: It doesn't matter.
- 1:01:53[SPEAKER_03]: So this is the Jane Foster 2015 era.
- 1:01:57[SPEAKER_03]: Like that, yeah, there is a multi part story in the middle of that run called the Asgard Shiar War, where Loki and as is his want triggers this war between the Asgardians and the Shiar and the he forces as a result of that Thor, the Jane Foster Thor.
- 1:02:18[SPEAKER_03]: has to participate in the challenge of the God, which is this thing where they like different gods have to prove their value by how many of their followers they can influence and get worshiped by.
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_03]: And at first, Sharon Kithri are deemed the winners because they score the most points out
- 1:02:45[SPEAKER_03]: because Shara and Kithri were doing all kinds of like cool stuff to goose their numbers and Thor got extra credit because she managed to convince the Asgardian gods themselves to fight on her behalf so that ended up
- 1:03:01[SPEAKER_03]: giving her the edge, and then Shara and Kithri were not too pleased with this, so they called on the Phoenix Force to just destroy all of reality.
- 1:03:11[SPEAKER_03]: And that was something that Thor teamed up with Kitto mega, Quentin Choir, to help stop because Quentin had a
- 1:03:21[SPEAKER_03]: connection with the Phoenix Forest himself.
- 1:03:23[SPEAKER_03]: They appealed to the better nature of the Phoenix Forest and in the end, reality was spared, but Shara and Kithri were sent to Nippetin's city, which MCU viewers might remember from that place overseeing by Russell Crowe in the fourth Thor movie.
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_03]: They get imprisoned there and as far as we know,
- 1:03:45[SPEAKER_03]: That's where they are still right now.
- 1:03:47[SPEAKER_03]: They have been mentioned plenty of times since then, but we have not seen them interacting since then.
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_00]: There's a major, uh, uh, uh, quick and choir story in Thor, if you didn't know, right?
- 1:04:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's it's like totally out there.
- 1:04:02[SPEAKER_03]: And it's great because that whole, um, as guard, she our war storyline is all drawn by Russell Doddman, um, back when Doddman was still doing interior work before he realized that he could just do variant covers and make a lot more money.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:04:14[SPEAKER_03]: I understandably decided to just go back route as a career path.
- 1:04:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I, and I'll mention quickly on this topic, the Phoenix forces were the of a much longer conversation.
- 1:04:23[SPEAKER_00]: We'll talk about the Phoenix Force one.
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_00]: but there are really intrinsic connections between the Shiar and the Phoenix Force.
- 1:04:30[SPEAKER_00]: In the fraternity of Raptors episode, it's posited that Dark Hawk is the human Shiar template of what's called the Dark Star Hawk, which is like a dark version of the Phoenix Force.
- 1:04:41[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, all of the raptors that like grow on that weird fucking tree and null space and the way they connect to the elders of the universe.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_00]: And then the Phoenix Force and like how there's constantly obsessed with wiping it out, but also this is a completely avian race.
- 1:04:53[SPEAKER_00]: It's crazy.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: Will you describe Shara and K3 to us from that mighty Thor series?
- 1:05:00[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so when they first appear in, I guess at the very end of the first issue, mighty Thor 15, they basically look like they have just stepped off of the planet Xanado.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_03]: They are, I kept a picture up here.
- 1:05:14[SPEAKER_03]: They are glowing.
- 1:05:16[SPEAKER_03]: Um, they have like sleeveless, uh, ones ease on.
- 1:05:20[SPEAKER_03]: Uh, they both have males with like fringes hanging down.
- 1:05:25[SPEAKER_03]: And of course, the, the, the, she are trying all feather head thing, but everything that's not flesh.
- 1:05:31[SPEAKER_03]: So the feathers and the costume has this like soft glow to it.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_03]: It's giving them a little bit of like rich billionaire at the sex club to me 100% 100% and the actual like story behind him the lore that the she are follow was largely established in that star jammer as many series that you mentioned.
- 1:05:54[SPEAKER_03]: The idea there is that Shara, who is the female, and Kithri, who is the male, were the creators of the universe.
- 1:06:02[SPEAKER_03]: This is according to the Shara religious beliefs.
- 1:06:05[SPEAKER_03]: They were once enemies, and then they were forced into marriage with each other.
- 1:06:10[SPEAKER_03]: During the course of that, they came to love one another at which point Kithri gave Shara
- 1:06:23[SPEAKER_03]: That's all.
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_03]: That many series is actually stay tuned.
- 1:06:26[SPEAKER_03]: We're going to talk about the M-Cron crystal in a moment, but that's a question we're getting gift.
- 1:06:30[SPEAKER_03]: And and that many series is pretty good, but it's also written by Warren Ellis and that really puts the whole forced marriage thing in a really uncomfortable context.
- 1:06:43[SPEAKER_03]: At one point, one of the, the idea that that's presented there is that that's why the she are conquer that they believe it is their religious duty to forceably marry of their cultures into their own because that's what their gods did.
- 1:06:59[SPEAKER_03]: And that's a really fascinating idea from the perspective of like how the she are different from the crey who are another imperialistic race that conquer things.
- 1:07:06[SPEAKER_03]: And
- 1:07:07[SPEAKER_03]: All of that kind of stuff, but coming from Ellis, it's just really not great.
- 1:07:13[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's given the British Empire or like the Christian Catholic Church, you know what I mean?
- 1:07:18[SPEAKER_03]: Like a little birdie sex cake involved in it too.
- 1:07:21[SPEAKER_00]: A simulation of cultures will kill you if you don't join us.
- 1:07:24[SPEAKER_00]: And if you do join us, we're going to take all of your fucking resources.
- 1:07:27[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, one of the characters in that many series refers to the the she are imperial practice as like shotgun weddings.
- 1:07:34[SPEAKER_03]: And I'm like, that's not really what they're doing.
- 1:07:37[SPEAKER_03]: That's a different term for that.
- 1:07:39[SPEAKER_03]: That's not great.
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_03]: One of the most fascinating things that I discovered in doing this research is that perhaps the first mention, at least of Shara, in a comic, was in Black Goliath number five, which is written by Chris Kyrmont,
- 1:07:55[SPEAKER_03]: It is in the context of Shara's forge, which is like a desolate wasteland on this alien planet that Black Deliath has been transported because if you're going to do a spin-off series about Hank Pimm's former lab assistant who is now giant man, why wouldn't you transport him to an alien planet for alien chenanigans?
- 1:08:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's all still man's fault.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 1:08:19[SPEAKER_00]: It is at 100% all still man's fault.
- 1:08:22[SPEAKER_03]: And so that's one of those cases where like good Claremont mean for that was he just reusing a, you know, later in his X-Men run because that was all before X-Men, I was 1976.
- 1:08:30[SPEAKER_03]: So before they were char and kithri were mentioned in in the X-Men.
- 1:08:36[SPEAKER_03]: was he just reusing a term or was that an intentional nod?
- 1:08:40[SPEAKER_03]: I don't know.
- 1:08:41[SPEAKER_03]: I also tried to determine the first time we hear Shara and K3 preserve us, just the shears, like go to exclamation.
- 1:08:50[SPEAKER_03]: sources online, say that it's in Xman107.
- 1:08:52[SPEAKER_03]: I
- 1:08:53[SPEAKER_03]: owned through that issue a couple of times.
- 1:08:55[SPEAKER_03]: And the closest I could find is the laundry saying Lord of Light at one point, which sounds like Claremont not quite having teased together all of the backstory yet.
- 1:09:05[SPEAKER_03]: I believe the first time it's heard is in Xman 135, which is part of the Dark Phoenix saga a couple of issues before the big climax there.
- 1:09:15[SPEAKER_03]: But I did not have time to comb through every issue of X-Men or possible appearances of the She-R between their first appearance and X-Men 135 to corroborate that fully is excellent Excellent research.
- 1:09:27[SPEAKER_00]: I know you're such a deep historian.
- 1:09:29[SPEAKER_00]: I so appreciate you going into the crazy lore These are these are nuts.
- 1:09:33[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 1:09:34[SPEAKER_00]: That's basically the lore the lore of Eric the Red But we're gonna take one more journey with you because we just need to and this is wild
- 1:09:41[SPEAKER_00]: All right, we're going to talk about the M-Cron Crystal, Scotty's going to talk about that part and then Chapman This is the weirdest conversation I've ever invited you for, but Chapman's going to tell us all about Motton Jaff The key issues here, Emperor Vulcan, War of the Realms, War Scrolls, Lords of Empire, Emperor Holkling, Some Marvel voices content, some stuff from Avengers Academy, the Anthony Olavera run
- 1:10:07[SPEAKER_00]: And then over at the uncanny title, issues 108, 203, 320, gambit of the externals from the age of apocalypse, X-Men at X-Men annual 1997 and issue 55.
- 1:10:19[SPEAKER_00]: The what if X-Men rise and fall of the CR Empire one shot and then over back to realm of King's Imperial Guard and even fantastic four volume six issues 40, 40, 145.
- 1:10:30[SPEAKER_00]: You guys can look all those up, replay my voice right them down.
- 1:10:33[SPEAKER_00]: We're gonna kind of jump all around for a minute.
- 1:10:35[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go to Scotty and then two Chapman as we delve into these crazy spaces.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so I'll let's go.
- 1:10:41[SPEAKER_02]: I'll kick us off.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_02]: This is Scotty.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I'll talk a little bit about the M. Kron Crystal in the history of the M. Kron Crystal long story short.
- 1:10:48[SPEAKER_02]: The M. Kron Crystal becomes sentient and then metals and the lives of a bunch of heroes.
- 1:10:53[SPEAKER_02]: But it's kind of interesting in the sense that she's a little strange, a little unusual for these different kind of cosmic characters that we see.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_02]: And her story is kind of embedded back through and then filled with continuity kind of plugs as we go.
- 1:11:05[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm going to try to walk you through this in relative application order so you can kind of get the idea for what's going on and then you can sort of get the sense of it because trying to tell it in narrative order makes no sense unfortunately.
- 1:11:35[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but they were used to be the people that guard the Mconquistola before La Landra and the Shear to cover the crystal and when we first meet Claremont introducing the Mconquistola, they go to a place called the world where the crystal was kept.
- 1:11:48[SPEAKER_00]: Chapman will tell us a little more about that.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_00]: But we're kind of getting the vibe that this is a race that was taking care of the crystal.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's spelled C or excuse me, Scy apostrophe AR space TAL.
- 1:12:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:12:00[SPEAKER_02]: But the key takeaway here, we don't actually meet any other members of this race, but we do get the sense that there are these people and that the history of the M. Congress still goes back far before the she are due.
- 1:12:11[SPEAKER_02]: And it's that kind of idea that there is there that this is the sea that Anthony Blader built on and his subsequent work in Marvel voices and the Avengers Academy.
- 1:12:21[SPEAKER_02]: But the first sexual appearance we get of a sentient in Chrome Crystal is in War of the Realms War Scrolls, where we see Wicken and Eight Bishop going out to lunch, and there is a drag queen named Crystal Imkron.
- 1:12:34[SPEAKER_02]: And she is doing a little dance and hanging out and being pretty over the top.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_02]: This is Dr.
- 1:12:38[SPEAKER_02]: The Koko Aera, so like the MC is wearing Professor X costume, which is extremely funny.
- 1:12:44[SPEAKER_02]: And Kate and Bishop are hanging out there trying to get some information about Loki.
- 1:12:48[SPEAKER_02]: uh, just the story is it ends up being Loki in the first place, but it is the first time that we actually get to meet a good to meet Crystal and Cron.
- 1:12:55[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, but it kind of leans into what happens in the later stories.
- 1:12:59[SPEAKER_02]: The next kind of big thing is this idea about there's a shard from the war of the rounds where there's a shard of the mcr crystal to get picked up.
- 1:13:05[SPEAKER_02]: He gets called the parallax stone and it drives a big chunk of the next narrative here.
- 1:13:09[SPEAKER_02]: So as we go through the series story, and this is the stuff that's covered in Marvel voices number 5 to 10, which is a set of, set of, uh, a set of Marvel unlimited, uh, what are they called?
- 1:13:19[SPEAKER_02]: The digital scrolling comics.
- 1:13:20[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:13:21[SPEAKER_00]: Infinity comic.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:13:22[SPEAKER_02]: Thank you.
- 1:13:23[SPEAKER_02]: Infinity comics up and down.
- 1:13:24[SPEAKER_02]: Up and down.
- 1:13:25[SPEAKER_02]: They just go up and down.
- 1:13:26[SPEAKER_02]: It is really nice though, because you can see like, what did I just read?
- 1:13:29[SPEAKER_02]: That you just scroll back, you know, like, oh, this is so easy.
- 1:13:32[SPEAKER_02]: But we go through each of the issues is this is kind of a spotlight issue on each different members of the old young Avengers team from the Kirin Gillen run back in 20 back in 2010.
- 1:13:41[SPEAKER_02]: 2012.
- 1:13:43[SPEAKER_02]: We get to go through and each of these stories, they're kind of handing the shard to each other to protect it from an evil, evil Christoph.
- 1:13:50[SPEAKER_02]: Chad, do you know who Christoph is?
- 1:13:53[SPEAKER_00]: Which issue are you referencing?
- 1:13:54[SPEAKER_02]: I'm talking about in issue number five.
- 1:13:56[SPEAKER_00]: of Marvel voices.
- 1:13:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:13:58[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, Christophe Vernard.
- 1:13:59[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, Christophe Vernard.
- 1:14:01[SPEAKER_00]: He was one of Anthony Oliveras all-time favorite characters.
- 1:14:04[SPEAKER_00]: That little boy from Latvieria that Dr. Doom adopts.
- 1:14:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:14:08[SPEAKER_02]: It is an incredibly deep cut.
- 1:14:10[SPEAKER_02]: This is a, you know, nonsense that rivals the summer's family tree, but the Doom has like a plan to the child with his own memories and turn him into his protege.
- 1:14:19[SPEAKER_02]: And this guy's gets tries to steal a shard of the Kim Karnkerson uses to take over all
- 1:14:25[SPEAKER_02]: So this sequence of issues is story of trying to get the crystal away from him, the parallax stone that actually is a piece of the shard.
- 1:14:32[SPEAKER_02]: And as you go through this issue, who also see, if you look closely, that crystal mcron is in different kind of small little spots.
- 1:14:39[SPEAKER_02]: Like one time she's the copy server, one time she's the librarian in the back of the room.
- 1:14:43[SPEAKER_02]: And they're like, oh, Anthony, you're up to something.
- 1:14:46[SPEAKER_02]: But it's the crystal kind of net gently nudging itself along through time where it needs to be.
- 1:14:51[SPEAKER_02]: uh one of the best ones that I liked from that particular arc was the bit with um if they called there's uh there's a bit with master pound ammonium and Tommy is taking care of master pandemonium.
- 1:15:00[SPEAKER_02]: This is definitely more ex um Avengers lore than xman lore but master pandemonium was the guy who had monsters for his hands and did naxia of hands.
- 1:15:08[SPEAKER_02]: He was very scary and weird and he was involved in the original creation of the characters of Billy uh of wicked and uh Tommy
- 1:15:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, dear friends through the show, Anthony Oliveira and Josh Trujillo have done a ton of work with Wicken and Hawkeling and they're like early origins.
- 1:15:23[SPEAKER_00]: So this is Anthony weaving those characters as boys in because Wicken eventually becomes the Demi urge again, it's universe building lore that we don't need to spend time on.
- 1:15:34[SPEAKER_02]: It is deep universal building more, but it is relevant because this is all tied into the M.Cron crystal.
- 1:15:40[SPEAKER_02]: And then Wickens' story is very central to how the M.Cron crystal becomes what it becomes.
- 1:15:46[SPEAKER_02]: So basically what happens is that in the next time we get to run into M.Cron and as a person, is during the Avengers Academy run.
- 1:15:56[SPEAKER_02]: So what we learned is that that parallax stone was planted inside of the Avengers Academy,
- 1:16:00[SPEAKER_02]: and it helps to do this manifold space time thing where it can be in three places at once.
- 1:16:04[SPEAKER_02]: And the use it is a school for training the next generation of Marvel's heroes.
- 1:16:08[SPEAKER_01]: From not just to the Avengers world, but all the different various four worlds and factions of the Marvel universe.
- 1:16:12[SPEAKER_02]: And this is a really great series, but there is this thread that goes through and it starts and I believe issue one and it goes through actually to the very end of M.Kron kind of showing up and doing different things to help these this next generation of heroes do their things.
- 1:16:24[SPEAKER_02]: She helps, uh, excavate, who is one of the characters there escape from the book touches of emplate.
- 1:16:29[SPEAKER_02]: She likes to appear to kid juggernaut and the kids all think that he's there.
- 1:16:33[SPEAKER_02]: She's that he is just a loose standing for because what are you going to do?
- 1:16:37[SPEAKER_02]: Um, and then she also saves a time displaced king in terms of into a mostly good character named kid, a mortise who helps to take care of the immigrant crystal.
- 1:16:46[SPEAKER_02]: But it's another one of those really loopy kind of things that comes in and out.
- 1:16:50[SPEAKER_02]: I think the thing and then kind of as we go to the end of that sort of that through line and then into that story, we get to see the Mkran crystal talk about all the different possibilities for these heroes, the things that could be in it never been.
- 1:17:02[SPEAKER_02]: And we learned just a little bit more about her story and how she's kind of connected and she is a part of the what do they call it, the or logic of the Marvel universe.
- 1:17:10[SPEAKER_02]: So she is the one who's creating all the craziness that is in the 16th and allowing magic and science and those different kinds of things to exist.
- 1:17:17[SPEAKER_02]: That's a really cool piece of lore building.
- 1:17:18[SPEAKER_02]: It's a lot of fun to read and it's fun to kind of watch this character evolve from here's this little drag being that appears in one little story and become this kind of central and interesting character.
- 1:17:28[SPEAKER_00]: So the end crime crystal when we meet it in the comics is that giant pink crystal that Decan is using to try to wipe out all life on the universe.
- 1:17:37[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Austin, I think reference this earlier, but do you guys know the sound effect that happens when the universe stops for a moment?
- 1:17:44[SPEAKER_00]: Anyone know?
- 1:17:45[SPEAKER_05]: It's sort of like a crystal like.
- 1:17:48[SPEAKER_00]: It's Blink, like B-L-I-N-K. Now fast forward to the 90s, is there a character you remember who passes through space and time when she teleports with pink energy?
- 1:17:58[SPEAKER_00]: So there's some interesting mcronties that have never quite been explained, but Clarice Ferguson seems connected.
- 1:18:04[SPEAKER_00]: The M-Cron crystal is just a huge pink fucking crystal with not a lot of real interesting history, but it's that button you push if you get to it and the universe will end.
- 1:18:13[SPEAKER_00]: It's the restart button for everything.
- 1:18:16[SPEAKER_00]: This becomes a huge part of the age of apocalypse, as well as there on that quest to find it and Blink keeps happening, right?
- 1:18:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like Blink is a character in it, but also thereafter the M-Cron, which is blinking in and out.
- 1:18:29[SPEAKER_00]: Anthony tells us there is a heretical tractate
- 1:18:34[SPEAKER_00]: for M-Cron which means that which endures that which is.
- 1:18:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it translates to directly.
- 1:18:40[SPEAKER_00]: And the crystal was created by someone as the foundation stone of reality and the rules of time, space, and magic were carved into it.
- 1:18:48[SPEAKER_00]: How are behind the crystal was opposed by a force of chaos and destruction known as the Gorath?
- 1:18:54[SPEAKER_00]: And this is a recurring threat in Avengers Academy.
- 1:18:57[SPEAKER_00]: We have Shuma Garath, but we also have the Gorath stone and other things that are being used in Avengers Academy as the throughline where like Arnie Roth and all those characters get involved.
- 1:19:06[SPEAKER_00]: The M-Cron which is the manifestation of the crystal is the woman, like the sentient version of all of this.
- 1:19:13[SPEAKER_00]: But there's another legend out there that tells us that the home world of the M-Cron crystal was the first planet to form.
- 1:19:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's as old as time itself.
- 1:19:22[SPEAKER_00]: The creators name the crystal, quote, the end of all that is.
- 1:19:26[SPEAKER_00]: And when the she are discovered it, they, like, claimed the planet as theirs.
- 1:19:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's when they took it away from the sky at all who were previously called the M-Cron.
- 1:19:37[SPEAKER_00]: and Kirk K3.
- 1:19:37[SPEAKER_00]: But ideally this is like the discovery of nuclear power, where if you do discover it, then you don't want to use it.
- 1:19:44[SPEAKER_00]: Decends the one that's willing to use it, right?
- 1:19:46[SPEAKER_00]: This is the world ending shit.
- 1:19:48[SPEAKER_00]: Inside of the crystal there's a beautiful alien city that may be connected to the white hot room.
- 1:19:53[SPEAKER_00]: There's no volume in there.
- 1:19:55[SPEAKER_00]: There are sons.
- 1:19:56[SPEAKER_00]: The white hot room seems to be within the
- 1:20:00[SPEAKER_00]: So we're going to talk about Martin Jaff who are like created to like keep this protected, but there's a stasis field that if disrupted could end all life across the universe.
- 1:20:10[SPEAKER_00]: And whenever there's a shard of the crystal, it can be used to kind of alter reality, almost kind of cosmic cuby, a little bit.
- 1:20:19[SPEAKER_00]: So there's some really deep lore.
- 1:20:20[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if you guys remember there's a classic X-Men backup story where Storm when they are in the savage land storm gets pulled out by this woman writing around on like lucky the dragon from from like Neverending story
- 1:20:36[SPEAKER_00]: The woman's name is Marin, M apostrophe R-I-N, and the dragon's name is Sajim, C apostrophe J-I-M-E, and they apparently take storm into the world, which is the M-Cron Crystal, likely, for a series of adventures before they return her.
- 1:20:51[SPEAKER_00]: What's that guy, Terminus, destroys the machines, the power of the savage land, it's overcome by winter, and all of the tribes of the savage land are taken into the world in order to survive and then brought back to repopulate.
- 1:21:04[SPEAKER_00]: which would include in a real end to Colossus' son that he doesn't know about Peter that lives there.
- 1:21:09[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of deep lore woven in and out of all this that's really interesting and they often get really involved in larger stories related to Marvel Cosmic and to this year specifically.
- 1:21:20[SPEAKER_00]: Chapman, do you want to tell us about Mott and Jack?
- 1:21:23[SPEAKER_05]: Yes.
- 1:21:24[SPEAKER_05]: And jumping on to the structure of the trial, your honor, this is officially my motion to separate the trials of Eric the Red from Martin Jeff as they are the quintessential wrong time wrong place characters, which is ironic because all but one of their appearances are indeed in one spot, which is the world.
- 1:21:43[SPEAKER_05]: Like we talked about, the world was the place that
- 1:21:49[SPEAKER_05]: And when we first go to that location in X-Men 108 towards the end of the original Phoenix saga, Matt and Jeff are introduced as the guardians.
- 1:21:58[SPEAKER_05]: Like Justin said, Jeff specifically says that he is programmed to defend the crystal and that is his entire purpose, which is interesting because he is very organic looking, as opposed to Matt, who is very much just a giant multi-story robot.
- 1:22:13[SPEAKER_05]: But Jeff is the one who, if you remember, he is first interaction with the X-Men,
- 1:22:17[SPEAKER_05]: Says a couple of riddles looks like a little bit of a troll creature type thing guarding the bridge if you will, but then when Logan tries to do his no nonsense approach that early Logan is known for, Jeff is the one who uppercuts him and launch his him up into the end out of the stratosphere, which is pretty impressive given the whole 400 pounds plus of Adam Antium yada yada on top of just watching someone into the stratosphere.
- 1:22:39[SPEAKER_05]: But like I said, wrong place, wrong time.
- 1:22:42[SPEAKER_05]: In this first initial appearance, like Justin talked about as well, Jeff is defeated by Banshee using his sonx to overwhelm Jeff's circuitry.
- 1:22:50[SPEAKER_05]: And then, Mott is kind of just avoided in general.
- 1:22:54[SPEAKER_05]: There's a wonderful panel where he talks about how, as the second guardian, he is a thousand times stronger than Jeff was.
- 1:23:01[SPEAKER_05]: And if you strike him down, there will be another guardian, a thousand times stronger than Mott is to come and take his place,
- 1:23:08[SPEAKER_05]: I told the guys on the group chat, it sounded very much to me like a little kid who is playing the game's, playing a made-up game and is changing the rules every time they lose, sort of like a, oh, the floor is lava until I touch and then my newfound ice powers defend me.
- 1:23:22[SPEAKER_05]: It's fair, it's very that.
- 1:23:23[SPEAKER_05]: Scott responds in kind and he says, well, the X-Men do not actually fall towards, we fall to actions.
- 1:23:30[SPEAKER_05]: So we're just going to go ahead and keep moving.
- 1:23:32[SPEAKER_05]: And then the action and merely pivots to end jumping into the crystal, starting to take over the world, we have to, Jean goes in and tries to save it and does so, yada yada, the feeding is so powerful.
- 1:23:42[SPEAKER_05]: From there, we move to their second appearance.
- 1:23:45[SPEAKER_05]: And like I said, wrong place, wrong time.
- 1:23:46[SPEAKER_05]: But also, you'll see a common thread with them of their, uh,
- 1:23:50[SPEAKER_05]: constantly appearing in issues where they are a footnote to extremely important things happening around them.
- 1:23:56[SPEAKER_05]: So they often get shuffled in the background, despite being these incredibly unique, very impactful characters.
- 1:24:03[SPEAKER_05]: They just sort of get shuffled off to the side of your brain, because like I said, this is the end of the Phoenix saga.
- 1:24:08[SPEAKER_05]: Genes were pairing the universe.
- 1:24:09[SPEAKER_05]: They immediately introduced fire alerts, introduced all the next arc stuff.
- 1:24:13[SPEAKER_05]: It's the beginning of the fair amount run, so everything's happening at once.
- 1:24:16[SPEAKER_05]: Next time they pop up is going to be X-Men on Kenny X-Men 203.
- 1:24:20[SPEAKER_05]: This is the Secret Wars 2 tie-in, which, if any of you have read it, you would know that this is one of the best Rachel issues ever.
- 1:24:27[SPEAKER_05]: And Chris Claremont is one of the only authors of this era who is able to make Secret Wars 2 work.
- 1:24:32[SPEAKER_05]: But this is that moment where Rachel decides to stop the beyond her, she's going to
- 1:24:45[SPEAKER_05]: And as they, and Charles, as they pass them by, she takes them all to the M. Cron crystal and she decides that she's just going to bypass Jeff, which she does so he just kind of turns and sees that oh shoot my one job has been thwarted and someone's gotten in the M. Cron crystal.
- 1:24:58[SPEAKER_05]: That's when the discussion happens with storm and all the other X men of
- 1:25:01[SPEAKER_05]: Is this appropriate?
- 1:25:02[SPEAKER_05]: Should we be taking out the beyonder by ending our reality and basically restarting the universe so that we can kill off the beyonder and set up a timeline in which the experiment or the new world that is created is able to live in peace without the threat of the beyonder.
- 1:25:19[SPEAKER_05]: The X-Men talk her down from this.
- 1:25:20[SPEAKER_05]: She returns everyone to their bodies.
- 1:25:22[SPEAKER_05]: There's also in the midst of this kiddie is dealing with the fact that she's gotten the sole sword armor because if you remember, the new mutants are also killed.
- 1:25:29[SPEAKER_05]: So like I said, this is an issue where a ton of really important stuff is happening and Jeff just kind of pops up there, even though he is really important.
- 1:25:37[SPEAKER_05]: Next time we see them as uncanny X-Men 320, which is the start of Legion Quest.
- 1:25:42[SPEAKER_05]: It's also the issue where we are introduced to the setting of Israel.
- 1:25:46[SPEAKER_05]: So there's a whole bunch of stuff happening in that entire issue.
- 1:25:49[SPEAKER_05]: And at the same time, Jeff comes in as a messenger to the Shiar and says, hey, by the way, destabilizing the M-Cron crystal.
- 1:25:56[SPEAKER_05]: Because as we know, when Legion goes back in time, gets Xavier killed, it starts the chain of events where the M-Cron crystal is never protected by the Phoenix.
- 1:26:04[SPEAKER_05]: that starts the whole crystallization that kicks off age of apocalypse, that's the kiss with Gambit and Rogue, if any of you remember.
- 1:26:12[SPEAKER_05]: And this is a moment where he's very much just coming in.
- 1:26:15[SPEAKER_05]: This is the first time we see that relationships specifically with the Shiar, before this, he's sort of been a piece of the environment of the world and just a defender guarding of the crystal.
- 1:26:25[SPEAKER_05]: But this is the first time we see him directly reporting to the PR Imperium, reporting to the Majestrics at the time, and informing her that, oh, by the way, this massive wave of crystallization is occurring.
- 1:26:36[SPEAKER_05]: We've all messed up.
- 1:26:37[SPEAKER_05]: We're all going to die.
- 1:26:38[SPEAKER_05]: From there in Age of Apocalypse, like we talked about, there's the appearance in Gambit in the externals.
- 1:26:42[SPEAKER_05]: This is, in my opinion, one of Jeff's probably best or second best appearance, because he gets this whole moment where
- 1:26:54[SPEAKER_05]: We're all fighting outside on the world, Gambit and Deathbird are pulled inside the crystal to speak with Jeff.
- 1:27:01[SPEAKER_05]: And this is where we get a little more explanation about what the M.Cron crystal is and what he does.
- 1:27:05[SPEAKER_05]: He specifically talks about how it is the nexus of all realities.
- 1:27:09[SPEAKER_05]: So he is actually one of the few multi-versal beings that is not a construct in Marvel.
- 1:27:15[SPEAKER_05]: He is actually in every single universe as himself.
- 1:27:19[SPEAKER_05]: I just like the M.Cron crystal is.
- 1:27:21[SPEAKER_00]: And we are waiting for a man thing, Martin Jeff Teeba, next is of all realities is right there.
- 1:27:27[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 1:27:27[SPEAKER_05]: It's true.
- 1:27:28[SPEAKER_05]: They actually discussed that in, in, just in a little later in their appearances, talking about how this is one of many, but this is specifically one that functions as doorways to all different realities, which I guess is very similar to that man thinks swamp.
- 1:27:42[SPEAKER_05]: But how he describes it is that if you were to leave the door open when some catastrophic thing happens in one reality, then that would extend into all realities and destroy them.
- 1:27:51[SPEAKER_05]: However, if something bad happens and he's doing his job and the doorways are closed, then he is able to let that reality dissolve and not affect the multiverse.
- 1:28:00[SPEAKER_05]: There's a great moment where in the midst of the crystal, Deathbird wants to strike out against her brother, because he is also in the crystal, I presumably the version of him from that we realize is not dead.
- 1:28:13[SPEAKER_05]: So I guess there's a little bit of foreshadowing there in that age of apocalypse series.
- 1:28:17[SPEAKER_05]: When she does so, she is a merely frozen in time and space to which game replies, how come that's not having to me?
- 1:28:23[SPEAKER_05]: And Jeff talks about how, when he blasted at the X-Men, of course, a different X-Men, the 616, not the AOA, how this gambit and those X-Men are the only people who have entered into the M-Cron crystal and entered into the
- 1:28:38[SPEAKER_05]: kingdom or world inside, in order to, without the desire for anything, whereas death or desire for revenge against her brother, desire the power that he was trying to take, gambit was simply looking for a way to stop, uh, to correctly confirm the six one sick six six bishop who's in Age of Apocalypse, his theories about the actual universe, and what's happening, yada.
- 1:29:00[SPEAKER_05]: And so with that, Jeff is able to give Gambit a piece of the M-Cron crystal that they use to undo the age for apocalypse, get us back on track to 616 that we all know and love, then we move on to the X-Men issues that you had me dig up.
- 1:29:15[SPEAKER_05]: At first, I was not super thrilled to be jumping back in X man because it's not my favorite, but then I realized that the, and especially once I realized that it was the 97 annual, which is the crossover of all four age of apocalypse transfers into this six one six who, you know, I could take or leave pretty much all four of them.
- 1:29:33[SPEAKER_05]: But I also realized that this isn't issue where they have essentially been gathered together or they would gather together by the she are because they realize that they are siphoning energy from the mcron crystal.
- 1:29:45[SPEAKER_05]: Jeff's appearance here is very brief, but it sets up his next appearance.
- 1:29:49[SPEAKER_05]: very importantly, but in this issue, a lot of it is not only Obsticate, obfuscated by the appearance of all four AOA members or all AOA transfers, but this is also his conversation is with an extremely pin-up version of La Landra in the art that is very jarring.
- 1:30:07[SPEAKER_05]: So the whole time in that conversation you're mostly focused on the hypersexualization of a character that is almost never hypersexualized that I've seen.
- 1:30:15[SPEAKER_05]: uh she's in a just a bedroom scene where she's draping the the cheat over her in very specific and enticing ways for jitter, a hologram of jaff of all people, not sure what she's going for there, but he essentially just informs her that we need to gather together these AOA transfers to stop the siphoning of the mcrong crystal energy which they do so.
- 1:30:34[SPEAKER_05]: However, it is then followed up on in Expan 55, which in that same theme of large more important things happenings.
- 1:30:40[SPEAKER_05]: This is in the midst of Nate traveling up to Alaska to stay with Jean and Scott while they are retired from the team and essentially just forging this bond between this alternate reality set of parents that he's met.
- 1:30:52[SPEAKER_05]: This is also when he ends up getting the X factor Scott look.
- 1:30:56[SPEAKER_05]: So there's a lot of things happening for him specifically.
- 1:30:58[SPEAKER_05]: But this is also the issue where Jeff and Matt posing as civilians decide to come and test whether or not Nate is worthy to have passed through the different realities and whether or not he's worthy of the energy is that are being thrusted upon him because of that so essentially they come down from space to beat the shadow of him and what they call a test.
- 1:31:19[SPEAKER_05]: At the end of it, he's essentially one, but Jeff decides to go off the handle and start attacking him and say, how no, he must die when moat decides to have a little bit of a character moment for himself, and says, actually, Jeff, you're in a little moment of absolute power corrupts absolutely.
- 1:31:35[SPEAKER_05]: This kid did pass the test.
- 1:31:37[SPEAKER_05]: He's okay to be here and we're going to leave.
- 1:31:40[SPEAKER_05]: I'm sorry about my little troll friend.
- 1:31:42[SPEAKER_05]: And then they go leaving Nate to get a new costume change.
- 1:31:45[SPEAKER_05]: It's honestly the most character we get out of all of them, besides the Gambit and the external appearance.
- 1:31:51[SPEAKER_05]: So it's fun for that.
- 1:31:52[SPEAKER_05]: It's fun to see Jeff having a little bit of his own side story, but it's pretty pretty one and done, but all in all, not a two terrible trip into X-Men territory.
- 1:32:00[SPEAKER_05]: So there we go.
- 1:32:01[SPEAKER_05]: And then wrapping up here, we've got a couple of minor appearances in the the newer era.
- 1:32:06[SPEAKER_05]: We talked about that.
- 1:32:07[SPEAKER_05]: What if Ryzen fall of the CR Empire, which Jeff is the narrator here.
- 1:32:11[SPEAKER_05]: He talks about how he was also here at the beginning and here at the end.
- 1:32:15[SPEAKER_05]: So a little bit more confirmation that Jeff and Mot are presumably created by the initial creators.
- 1:32:20[SPEAKER_05]: of the M-Cron crystal and the seventh universe of Marvel, if you know about all the iterations and such.
- 1:32:26[SPEAKER_05]: But for the most part, it's overshadowed by the fact that it's a what if issue that is going into all the continuity.
- 1:32:31[SPEAKER_05]: It's introducing the fact that Quinn Choir is in the white hot room in some variation in a really ugly version of the Phoenix costume and he's got a crazy panel with his face on it.
- 1:32:40[SPEAKER_05]: So all of that also kind of overshadows Jeff as narrator.
- 1:32:43[SPEAKER_05]: In Emperor Vulcan, we get a cameo from him where it's the midst of Vulcan trying to fight the side art hall at the M. Cron crystal and Jeff is there and trying to fight things off, but is unsuccessfully fighting off Vulcan's attempts to get into the crystal is very minor.
- 1:33:01[SPEAKER_05]: uh, in rum of Kings five, and rum of Kings Imperial Guard number five, uh, Jeff is at the meeting that glider summons as he is the current Majestor after Vulcan is forced to advocate the throne throne after his loss for his defeat, and he updates them that things are happening at the M. Cronk crystal, and it's interesting.
- 1:33:20[SPEAKER_05]: It's the
- 1:33:21[SPEAKER_05]: the realm of kings is going on.
- 1:33:22[SPEAKER_05]: Again, very minor appearance, just talking about this stability of the crystal, and then we get a big update from them in the fantastic four volume six.
- 1:33:30[SPEAKER_05]: This is Dan Slots run, and in the midst of the reckoning war, which we're not going to get into a powerful race, lots of tech.
- 1:33:36[SPEAKER_05]: They start handing out their tech to a bunch of other creatures, and they specifically send a platoon to go and attack the M. Cronk Crystal.
- 1:33:44[SPEAKER_05]: Jeff and Moch are shown to be killed and defeated alongside the Imperial Guard, and so a whole bunch of heroes including the fantastic for all team up to go and defend themselves.
- 1:33:55[SPEAKER_05]: At the end of it, who ought to, the watcher has essentially depowered all the other watchers and become the only watcher and then he dies,
- 1:34:05[SPEAKER_05]: From there, he uses his newfound cosmic powers as the one true watcher to restore all of the damage that happened in the reckoning war, all of the damage that the other watchers caused with their negligence, he had a yada and in doing so, they restore Jeff and mut back to full health.
- 1:34:23[SPEAKER_05]: They are, once again, the guardians and they are also given a new guardian in the form of
- 1:34:33[SPEAKER_05]: way back when and now he's a soldier for the M. Cronkristle, and that's as far as I'm going to get into his stuff because it's a whole 90% of the universe.
- 1:34:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we talked about this in the watcher trial very briefly.
- 1:34:46[SPEAKER_00]: The watchers isolated a race outside of space and time, basically another back for revenge.
- 1:34:52[SPEAKER_00]: This is
- 1:34:52[SPEAKER_00]: This is a giant huge story that they're building through years of storytelling.
- 1:34:57[SPEAKER_00]: It involved the great like Avengers and like Avengers, the initiative that builds and builds and builds and builds.
- 1:35:02[SPEAKER_00]: It's interesting.
- 1:35:03[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, the emnoodle watcher and then like rapture and ruin from this evil race, wanted to destroy everything.
- 1:35:09[SPEAKER_00]: And now, Kormorant, which is another bird, is like helping Ma and Jeff.
- 1:35:13[SPEAKER_00]: Do you want to talk about the origins of the names Ma and Jeff Chapman?
- 1:35:17[SPEAKER_00]: Or do you know this already?
- 1:35:18[SPEAKER_05]: I went full in universe world digging.
- 1:35:21[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so these characters much like Cecil and Beanie of Warstar fame are named after real characters.
- 1:35:28[SPEAKER_00]: Mutt and Jeff is a long running like American newspaper comic strip that ran from like 1907 on.
- 1:35:34[SPEAKER_00]: And so you can look it up, but these are these are interesting and these characters are like given the very Vaudeville energy bud buddy comedy.
- 1:35:40[SPEAKER_00]: Modern Jeff and the mcrone really make this more than anything the neverending story or labyrinth for me.
- 1:35:46[SPEAKER_00]: It goes full gemensan, like very much.
- 1:35:49[SPEAKER_00]: Like the big guy, mott is like the rockbiter character, like the big dumb guy, you know.
- 1:35:56[SPEAKER_00]: These are interesting little, little deviant guys.
- 1:36:00[SPEAKER_00]: And the mcrone crystal itself is tied to a bunch of other Marvel stories that we won't take a lot of time for, but one thing I want to
- 1:36:07[SPEAKER_00]: emphasize is what Chapman just brought up.
- 1:36:09[SPEAKER_00]: If you destroy the crystal in one reality, it could send like a cascading effect through other realities, like defeating all of them as well.
- 1:36:20[SPEAKER_00]: We also have references to this in various cartoons.
- 1:36:23[SPEAKER_00]: In one spoken word, we hear it called M. Cron, and in the other Ukraine is the other way that we hear it pronounced in live.
- 1:36:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, an mcr on crystal is said to power the talis, which is what the exiles used to hop around realities.
- 1:36:39[SPEAKER_00]: If you guys remember that early 2001 series, we also see it connected to the penop to Cron, I'll let you look that up on your own.
- 1:36:46[SPEAKER_00]: And remember that time professor X lost his mutant powers, but he went into the mcr on crystal and it gave him his telepathy back.
- 1:36:53[SPEAKER_00]: That was a real story during the rice and fall of the CR Empire.
- 1:36:56[SPEAKER_00]: So let's
- 1:36:57[SPEAKER_00]: stuff.
- 1:36:57[SPEAKER_00]: How are we feeling about deep she are lower now that we have spent a lot of time kind of wrapping our brains around insane continuity?
- 1:37:05[SPEAKER_00]: Let me go around the room real quick.
- 1:37:06[SPEAKER_00]: What's one thing you loved learning today?
- 1:37:09[SPEAKER_00]: And one thing that you're feeling kind of a headache about a little bit.
- 1:37:12[SPEAKER_00]: Let's start with Derek and then Austin.
- 1:37:14[SPEAKER_01]: I love learning about getting a deeper dive into the religious parts of there, their empire.
- 1:37:20[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's religion kind of dictate how cultures do, does dictate how cultures work.
- 1:37:26[SPEAKER_01]: So it was a bit more insight and more color to just how their empire functions.
- 1:37:31[SPEAKER_01]: So that was cool to me.
- 1:37:33[SPEAKER_01]: And then when I'm still confused about,
- 1:37:36[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm sure there are things like, I mean, Chad, you curated this list of things to talk about.
- 1:37:40[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure there's so much more we could cover.
- 1:37:42[SPEAKER_01]: So, I mean, there's still more pieces I think we can pull together.
- 1:37:45[SPEAKER_01]: So it's not really confusing, but I guess something that I'm excited about is there could be more to talk about.
- 1:37:49[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, for me, I think it was being reminded of that black life pull.
- 1:37:55[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, for the law of of Shara and Kishri.
- 1:37:58[SPEAKER_03]: And I did really, I really did not appreciate having to be reminded that Cornell was behind that that star jammer's mini series.
- 1:38:07[SPEAKER_03]: So she's one of those things that I kind of intellectually knew in my brain, but then when I pulled up those issues again, I was like, Oh, no.
- 1:38:13[SPEAKER_00]: We barely touched on the Imperial Guard on the war crimes on the slave pits on the earth invasions on the creer on the sky.
- 1:38:22[SPEAKER_03]: time they were uh uh super heroes on Earth briefly.
- 1:38:27[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, the Imperial Guard.
- 1:38:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:38:29[SPEAKER_00]: Keep going.
- 1:38:29[SPEAKER_00]: Same questions, Justin Chapman and then Scotty.
- 1:38:32[SPEAKER_04]: So the one I'm still scratching my head on is the McCran crystal or M. Cron on Harvey's hit.
- 1:38:39[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's crazy that one that part.
- 1:38:42[SPEAKER_04]: I'm still just kind of scratching my head on I feel like looking into it more.
- 1:38:47[SPEAKER_04]: I'll eventually get it, but that's just one words like I'm gonna put that aside But I'm kind of touching on what Derek said.
- 1:38:53[SPEAKER_04]: I do appreciate learning a bit more about Shara and the kithiri Just learning about the meaning of the religion and their culture
- 1:39:04[SPEAKER_05]: I thought it was really fun to see how many incredibly important touchstones you hit by going through Martin Jeff's history.
- 1:39:12[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't expect to hit essentially all of the greatest hits to some degree and X-Men.
- 1:39:19[SPEAKER_05]: All of the greatest hits plus X-Men.
- 1:39:21[SPEAKER_05]: But I thought it was really fun to basically get a touchstone of so many different really important eras of X-Men save for probably the
- 1:39:32[SPEAKER_05]: But yeah, it was just, it's a, their appearances are fascinating.
- 1:39:36[SPEAKER_05]: I also, one thing I learned about that in finishing up my research towards the end is that Jeff is technically the only character of Marvel canon who appears in John Burns X-Men L-Swent since it is a multi-versal character.
- 1:39:50[SPEAKER_05]: I didn't actually read that one, but I just found that out in the appearances.
- 1:39:53[SPEAKER_00]: But, sorry, but.
- 1:39:55[SPEAKER_05]: I, in terms of things that I, I am still stumped about, it don't, no one that come up to me and ask about any of the secret societies.
- 1:40:02[SPEAKER_05]: I just found out that I completely missed that Adam X, Captain Marvel stuff I'm going to double back for.
- 1:40:07[SPEAKER_05]: So if, I just know that there's a lot of them and that they really like to kill people and that they really like to protect what they have, which, can make sense for a secret society.
- 1:40:16[SPEAKER_05]: That's a lot of them.
- 1:40:17[SPEAKER_05]: Yeah.
- 1:40:18[SPEAKER_00]: The, again, we talk about the warbird or like Wakanda one, but there's the rising fall of the Shia Empire opens with the X-Men like going to a Shia base and there's like some undead Shia warriors that you like used to be their slaves that have been kept alive all these years and now they're like cyborg crazies.
- 1:40:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's some shit.
- 1:40:35[SPEAKER_00]: I forgot to bring up in Moira.
- 1:40:38[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's her eighth life.
- 1:40:40[SPEAKER_00]: uh... the world ends because of the mcron crystal if i'm remembering the reality designation but uh... or bestilarious that like other version of sinister and like prodigy have a big war over who gets the crystal but then like the sinister and nigma steals it like the ethics that's like advanced to like godhood yeah there's a that's an improd crystal like world ending story uh... as well uh... it's got your thoughts
- 1:41:02[SPEAKER_02]: The thing that I enjoyed most was going through all the M. Cron crystal stories and kind of picking that apart.
- 1:41:07[SPEAKER_02]: They're also some really great panels that I got to reread from Avengers Academy.
- 1:41:11[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to share them with the team here.
- 1:41:13[SPEAKER_02]: I was texting my friends last night while I was doing these things.
- 1:41:17[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, here we go.
- 1:41:18[SPEAKER_02]: That can put them in there.
- 1:41:19[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 1:41:20[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
- 1:41:20[SPEAKER_00]: The use of the M. Cron crystal and Avengers Academy is one of the only topics Anthony Olevera is hesitant to talk about life.
- 1:41:27[SPEAKER_00]: I think he has some big stories.
- 1:41:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, that that makes a lot of sense.
- 1:41:31[SPEAKER_02]: So this part's really great and they also has a bit pinched for using unusual words.
- 1:41:35[SPEAKER_02]: So I got to look up Cycopom and it was the other one that I really liked that I found from there.
- 1:41:40[SPEAKER_02]: At one point, they refer to the Mconcrant crystal as Chastine and I was like, what does that?
- 1:41:45[SPEAKER_02]: And it's an old arcade term for like the mistress of a castle.
- 1:41:49[SPEAKER_02]: So that part was great.
- 1:41:50[SPEAKER_02]: The part that I liked less was dealing with the kind of super continuity around it because at one point, the character show up in a story that happens years later, brought in terms of publication history, but it gets put back and they get sent back to in-time to a prior story to make the events of that thing happen.
- 1:42:07[SPEAKER_02]: And you're like, there's just a lot of time you widening as to it that I haven't really drawn like drawn the pieces of that out yet.
- 1:42:14[SPEAKER_00]: So let's wrap this all back around now that we've gotten our headaches from the Shiar to Eric the Red himself.
- 1:42:21[SPEAKER_00]: This man has super powered red sexy armor that makes him super strong and gives him a force field.
- 1:42:28[SPEAKER_00]: He's a little bit telepathic because he can like hypnotize people sometimes, but also he's resistant to telepathy.
- 1:42:36[SPEAKER_00]: He can fire blasts of energy out of his hand.
- 1:42:40[SPEAKER_00]: He was raising Adam X as his own well-experimenting on people.
- 1:42:45[SPEAKER_00]: What do we need about this character?
- 1:42:47[SPEAKER_00]: What are you curious about?
- 1:42:48[SPEAKER_00]: What amplifies him up to the major kind of X-Men villain status that you think he should have if at all?
- 1:42:55[SPEAKER_00]: I think we need a solid origin, but I think he has the potential to be kind of a big deal if someone told the right kind of story with him.
- 1:43:03[SPEAKER_00]: And then as we're wrapping up, any final thoughts you have, where can people find you online and anything you want to plug for October 2026?
- 1:43:12[SPEAKER_04]: So relating to Eric the Red, um, I would like a bit more of a deep dive into this cult on earth, um, kind of clan a cabas style or a comma, um, I feel like that would be interesting.
- 1:43:25[SPEAKER_04]: Um, another note I did have here was whether or not I feel like this was mentioned earlier, um, Shikari or Cyclops were the first to have Eric the Red, like who had the name first.
- 1:43:37[SPEAKER_04]: So did Shikari copy Cyclops is one time costume or did Cyclops somehow adopt the look?
- 1:43:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think Cyclops certainly adopted look because Eric the Red was on earth for a long time before that.
- 1:43:48[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it just feels like a coincidence, but like I said, I'd love to see a deep dive into this cult and see if that's expanded on.
- 1:43:55[SPEAKER_04]: I feel like that could kind of elevate Eric the Red.
- 1:43:58[SPEAKER_04]: As for where you can find me, I am primarily on Instagram, under Jay, underscore cosmic, that's cosmic with the K. However, I'd
- 1:44:06[SPEAKER_04]: I do have a Patreon, and I am sometimes on Blue Sky.
- 1:44:10[SPEAKER_04]: As for what I have going on since this is coming out in October, Conceasing is done for me, so aside from some cosplays at home, some photoshoots here and there, I just have Halloween coming up and just downtime until Conceasing starts again.
- 1:44:25[SPEAKER_00]: Please see Justin in the girl with the great smiles recent Jordan's recent reels, where Justin's playing a very whiny havoc.
- 1:44:36[SPEAKER_00]: On my list of, I have a whole database of, like, X-Men crazy, she are shit, but Xavier had the danger room a long time before he met LaLandra.
- 1:44:45[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:44:46[SPEAKER_00]: Let's, well, we keep going with Final Thoughts on Eric, the Red, and the Nautros.
- 1:44:50[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go Scotty next.
- 1:44:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think that the thing that I was most excited about in terms of this and going forward is just, you know, it's really fun to kind of dig into this lore and you really get the sense of the craziness and the expansiveness of the X-Men world, you can find me on Instagram and under Scotty loves comics and I post about my different appearances on different shows and things like that.
- 1:45:12[SPEAKER_00]: Another Shiar fact, Cassandra Nova, who is the evil shadow clone of Charles Xavier from the womb, identifies with a particular hidden race called the Muma Dry, which is a Shiar word connected to Shiar lore.
- 1:45:27[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just throwing that one out there as well.
- 1:45:30[SPEAKER_02]: Austin, you're the only met one or two Muma Dry, haven't we?
- 1:45:33[SPEAKER_03]: Um, Austin, your thoughts.
- 1:45:35[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, I, for me, the piece of Eric that I'd most interested in would be his time on earth before decadent gives him the ring to start attacking the X-Men and take out Xavier.
- 1:45:46[SPEAKER_03]: I feel like that's a rich territory to mine.
- 1:45:50[SPEAKER_03]: And of course, then you could loop in my much wanted cyclops Eric to read backstory stuff into that.
- 1:45:58[SPEAKER_03]: As for me, because I didn't get a chance to declare this up front for the record, I am a huge Star Wars fan.
- 1:46:07[SPEAKER_03]: So if I get that out there, you could read my writing at the real gentleman of leisure.com.
- 1:46:12[SPEAKER_03]: That's why I do my issue by issue breakdowns of every ex book.
- 1:46:17[SPEAKER_03]: I am knocking on the door of Operation Zero Tolerance right now.
- 1:46:21[SPEAKER_03]: And I've been
- 1:46:23[SPEAKER_03]: plotting when and where to do an examination of those that five-issue black lia series in my head while we've been talking today.
- 1:46:32[SPEAKER_03]: You could find me on social media pretty much everywhere, Austin Gorton or Austin X Gorton, one or the other, I'm currently doing a daily series celebrating the 40th anniversary of X Factor where I'm posting a cover featuring members of the various iterations of X Factor that came out on that day.
- 1:46:50[SPEAKER_03]: Check that out and I do writing and stuff all over the internet, but just follow me on socials.
- 1:46:55[SPEAKER_03]: You'll get links to all of that.
- 1:46:56[SPEAKER_03]: And lastly, it is not coming out to January and I think final order cutoff is passed at this point, but look for an article for me on juggernaut in back issue 172.
- 1:47:09[SPEAKER_03]: that comes out the second week of January from the good folks at tomorrow's press.
- 1:47:13[SPEAKER_00]: Another fun share-fact for everybody.
- 1:47:15[SPEAKER_00]: They can age up space babies.
- 1:47:17[SPEAKER_00]: There are also clone sequences, erarchy dies, and is replaced by the next and the erarchy sequence.
- 1:47:23[SPEAKER_00]: Death bird is like banished from the shear, and we have
- 1:47:26[SPEAKER_00]: three characters that are said to be her children across comics lore, not counting the egg baby.
- 1:47:32[SPEAKER_00]: We have white light and black noise.
- 1:47:35[SPEAKER_00]: You can look them up as well as death cry, who is a beloved character from the Avengers.
- 1:47:40[SPEAKER_00]: So interesting things there as well.
- 1:47:43[SPEAKER_00]: Derek.
- 1:47:43[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, so I think there are a couple of things that a couple of their stories I'd like to see are threaded in.
- 1:47:47[SPEAKER_01]: Uh, the last time we see Adam X, we see that Sinister is watching him on a monitor, but then we see that somebody's watching Sinister watching Adam X on a monitor and that looks like it might be Eric the red watching Sinister watch Adam X.
- 1:47:58[SPEAKER_01]: So there's something there and also add a message or a character reds connection to the kin.
- 1:48:04[SPEAKER_01]: There's 10 chains.
- 1:48:06[SPEAKER_01]: We only know about four of them and I'm looking at the list and like there's one called the goblin extraction and that's not, that hasn't been explained.
- 1:48:12[SPEAKER_01]: And there's also the 10th chain which is unspoken to all the one.
- 1:48:16[SPEAKER_01]: So if Eric's right is part of this kin, he might have some context that.
- 1:48:20[SPEAKER_01]: So there are definitely that potential there right for the picking.
- 1:48:24[SPEAKER_01]: So and then maybe just some pinups with him and the others who would be great.
- 1:48:27[SPEAKER_01]: Um, you can follow me on Instagram, Derek J. Nichols, um, and then Blue Sky Derek Hearts BFL, um, I have nothing to plug in October except Halloween, so if I had raised having a good time with that.
- 1:48:39[SPEAKER_01]: And, um, yeah, thank you.
- 1:48:41[SPEAKER_00]: Derek, Derek, the Red, you could be Derek the Red!
- 1:48:43[SPEAKER_00]: Ah!
- 1:48:46[SPEAKER_00]: I posit that Eric the Red and Mr. Sinister know each other, and I think Lucifer also knows them.
- 1:48:51[SPEAKER_00]: Those three playing poker in the 1960s is everything I need in the comic book.
- 1:48:56[SPEAKER_05]: And lastly, Chapman.
- 1:48:57[SPEAKER_05]: All right, everyone.
- 1:48:58[SPEAKER_05]: I am Chapman Blake.
- 1:48:59[SPEAKER_05]: You can find me on the Subtext Men podcast.
- 1:49:02[SPEAKER_05]: That's SUB T-E-X-T-M-E-N. And that is also my handle for Instagram and Blue Sky.
- 1:49:08[SPEAKER_05]: We cover the X-Men novels over there.
- 1:49:10[SPEAKER_05]: If this is October, then coming up, I've just re-released some coverage of the first episodes that covered, but that I'm also going to start coverage of.
- 1:49:20[SPEAKER_05]: either ultimate X-Men or the ultimate superhero that is not ultimate X-Men, the 2001 series that is ultimate X-Men, the anthology story from 1996, I believe.
- 1:49:33[SPEAKER_05]: I'll also be having an interview with Alex Segura on his book, Daredevil Enemy of My Enemy coming out soon as well.
- 1:49:40[SPEAKER_05]: In the new year, I'll be on the episode of Out to Get You Podcast, talking about the movie horns
- 1:49:47[SPEAKER_05]: And other than that, I'll be releasing episodes here and there.
- 1:49:50[SPEAKER_05]: I'll be jumping on shows here and there.
- 1:49:52[SPEAKER_05]: Keep an eye on X factor files and best issue ever because I've got some stuff in the works over there.
- 1:49:57[SPEAKER_05]: And yeah, you can also find my personal stuff at Chapman C Blake C as in cat and other than that.
- 1:50:03[SPEAKER_05]: Oh, what would I like to see more of Eric the red?
- 1:50:06[SPEAKER_05]: I think similar ideas everyone else, I think any good continuity dive needs to both take what is already there, try not to chop out as much as you can, try to leave it as much as you can, but also scream line it and make it easier to digest.
- 1:50:20[SPEAKER_05]: At times, I think that's kind of the best approach to all these different continuity knots.
- 1:50:24[SPEAKER_05]: So if we've got those 10 different plans, I'd love to see Eric focusing in on what are these secret societies, maybe connect them all together so we can understand is their sort of
- 1:50:35[SPEAKER_05]: that also sounds like their names tie into different X-Men events.
- 1:50:39[SPEAKER_05]: So maybe different secret societies have been sort of pushing on or prophesying different X-Men events that have occurred of the goblin extraction is as something to do with maybe inferno, the inferno is that have happened.
- 1:50:51[SPEAKER_05]: I'd love to see, yeah, just some more connect things together, interconnect the web, take things that are on the fringes and sort of tie them in together.
- 1:50:59[SPEAKER_05]: And get just give us more of that story of those secret societies, what Eric the Red is doing with them, how they function together or separate.
- 1:51:06[SPEAKER_05]: I think that's a whole whole, and how that then impacts the history and the pre-history of X-Men.
- 1:51:12[SPEAKER_05]: I think that's the direction that everyone's kind of, everyone's kind of desire to get sounds like, so maybe that's, maybe that's where we take it.
- 1:51:17[SPEAKER_00]: We have a call out in the chat to Nurtler Cosplay's amazing Eric the Red Cosplay, everybody go look that up.
- 1:51:23[SPEAKER_00]: The last thing I want to mention for the Shiar today, I hope you've enjoyed the Shiar content this month.
- 1:51:27[SPEAKER_00]: We've kind of only scratched the surface if we're honest, so there's a lot of stories that are right for telling, but the Shiar, according to the threshold story from Marauders, they've known about mutants for like a billion years.
- 1:51:39[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of interesting things.
- 1:51:41[SPEAKER_00]: There's a reason these characters must be on earth.
- 1:51:43[SPEAKER_00]: And if the White Hot Room is in the M-Con, Kron Crystal, and the She-R-O-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N-A-N
- 1:52:08[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I always announce the next three themed months at the end of these.
- 1:52:12[SPEAKER_00]: In November, it is the trial of a Rural Monroe.
- 1:52:16[SPEAKER_00]: It is all storm content on the main show.
- 1:52:19[SPEAKER_00]: I have some amazing guests and the patrons are awesome.
- 1:52:23[SPEAKER_00]: I've recorded those already.
- 1:52:25[SPEAKER_00]: It is alarmingly good.
- 1:52:27[SPEAKER_00]: In December, we are taking a shocking turn as we focus the show around Aunt May.
- 1:52:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's right, Maybell Riley Parker is going to be featured in our academic panel at the end of that month.
- 1:52:38[SPEAKER_00]: And the theme on the main show is like Octogenarians.
- 1:52:42[SPEAKER_00]: It's all old ladies and old senior citizen characters, including horticulture over on the Patreon, so you're not ready for that nonsense.
- 1:52:50[SPEAKER_00]: In January, we are jumping back over to the world of champions and doing a focus on the show around the character Ghost Rider, and the theme over on the Patreon will be flaming skeleton guys.
- 1:53:01[SPEAKER_00]: So we have some fun conversations there as well.
- 1:53:05[SPEAKER_00]: It's really fun to see the show taking shape in the new year.
