- 0:03Morning from the Chicken Coop podcast.
- 0:05My name is Kim Johnson and I am a mastermindset, coach, creative
- 0:08strategist, and also happened to be a farmer.
- 0:11This is my Chicken coop and I come out here.
- 0:13Every day to record a podcast to.
- 0:15Teach distinctions, possibilities, new ways of
- 0:18thinking, and just bring some. Joy into the world.
- 0:21So welcome to the coop and let's start your day off in a
- 0:24fantastic way. Hey everybody.
- 0:28Good morning from the chicken coop talking about learning new
- 0:33things. So Full disclosure, I'm in the
- 0:37midst of throwing myself into learning all about video,
- 0:40whether it's shooting it, whether it's trying to make it
- 0:43better, whether it's scripting it, whether it's editing it.
- 0:47I've made a commitment to myself over the last month that I'm
- 0:50really going to learn it. So I understand what the
- 0:52capabilities are. Now, anyone who follows me
- 0:56regularly knows I'm obsessed with photos.
- 0:59And I'm, you know, I, I have a camera with me all the time in
- 1:03the phone. But I also have a very
- 1:06sophisticated Canon system and I use that system to take pictures
- 1:10of close up things mostly. I do have a very big lens that
- 1:14lets me photograph things like birds and far away and whatnot.
- 1:19But most of my stuff that I really love, love, love to
- 1:22shoot. I love shooting birds.
- 1:23Don't get me wrong. I mean photographs, not shooting
- 1:26birds, so to speak, but I love photographing them.
- 1:31But I with the big lens. But I have a special place in my
- 1:34heart for macro photography. And this this came about many,
- 1:39many years ago when I got one of my first cameras, which was a
- 1:43Polaroid. My dad got me one of those
- 1:45Polaroids that shoot out the the piece of film that's already the
- 1:50photo. And I was probably like 8 years
- 1:55old and I was burning through that film because if you
- 1:58remember way back when, you probably even still now that you
- 2:01only get so many pieces of it. And I was constantly burning
- 2:04through that film trying to get pictures of things that were
- 2:07close up. And you just can't really do it
- 2:10with that format, but I would try incessantly.
- 2:13So one of the first things I did when I got into art school was
- 2:17to make sure that I had a camera that had a lens that I could
- 2:21photograph things close up. And even still, it wasn't macro
- 2:25enough. So I, I got, as I got older and
- 2:28I could afford better equipment, I was like, OK, I'm going to get
- 2:31100mm macro lens and I'm going to start noticing everything
- 2:35around me. So I think I'm pretty good at
- 2:37it, right? Like I do, I think I'm pretty
- 2:39good at what I do with it. But then there are times when I
- 2:42shock myself with what I notice because I slow down and I gear
- 2:46down and I have to really think about it.
- 2:47Like I have to say to myself, it's time to gear down.
- 2:50And that's what I did the other day when I started photographing
- 2:54the the water garden and getting really close up on things, just
- 3:00noticing every little piece of it.
- 3:02Then I started thinking to myself, OK, so I want to know
- 3:06how to film those things because guess what?
- 3:08When you go to film something like that, it's a very different
- 3:13world. And this is how the whole thing
- 3:14came about, about me learning filming and editing and all this
- 3:17stuff. Because I really want to be able
- 3:18to take my skills over to a video level as well as a
- 3:23photography level. But I know nothing about it.
- 3:25And let's face it, I run a full time business.
- 3:28I'm a mom to a 16 year old boy. And I mean that.
- 3:32I'm still responsible for my daughter's out on her own, but
- 3:35but yet I'm still doing things with her and her family.
- 3:38I mean, I am busy all the time. I've got a lot of clients very
- 3:43grateful for that. Would never say anything
- 3:45negative about that because there's nothing negative to say.
- 3:48I love every one of them. If you're a client and you're
- 3:50listening, please know you're loved and cared for in any way
- 3:53that I can. I think I demonstrate that all
- 3:56the time to all of you. But in any event, I have to try
- 3:59to find like, quote UN quote, find the time to put this in.
- 4:03So I go, I'm discussing this with my coach and we talk about
- 4:06how I don't believe in like, you know, quote UN quote finding
- 4:09time. I slot the time.
- 4:11So it's I'm going to get up really early and I'm going to
- 4:14Start learning this editing and I'm going to start doing certain
- 4:16things with it. Well, here's the issue.
- 4:19I'm very good at setting timers when I'm writing to learn
- 4:22things. I can go and I'll write for 30
- 4:24minutes and I'll get up and walk away.
- 4:25But when I'm in the middle of learning visual things like
- 4:28editing or filming or trying to understand how to make something
- 4:33better from that aspect, boy am IA little bit different.
- 4:38I find it excruciatingly hard to just stop and get up and walk
- 4:42away and switch gears. Now I've known forever that I
- 4:44don't switch gears. Well, when I'm in the middle of
- 4:47doing something, I just want to keep doing it.
- 4:49And then I have to have her either a break with food or I
- 4:52have to have a break with sleep. That kind of says, OK, now we're
- 4:55going to go do something else. Otherwise, my brain is all
- 4:58bought into whatever we're doing.
- 5:00But this, this is like so creative to me.
- 5:03And learning is so much fun to me, especially when it's stuff
- 5:07like this that I just get hunkered down.
- 5:10So the reason I'm telling you all of this is because I have to
- 5:13shift my approach right now in order to get it done.
- 5:16Otherwise, I have to pull like a series of all nighters in order
- 5:20to learn it. Even at a basic level.
- 5:24I've got to break it up. I've got to break it up.
- 5:27So I recognize this and I'm saying to myself, OK, this is
- 5:32such a good confession to make about how I'm going to be
- 5:35forcing myself to change my approach with this.
- 5:39And I'm going to be doing it in chunks.
- 5:41And we're going to see how this goes.
- 5:43We're going to see how patient I can be finally have my energy
- 5:46back after being sick. I mean, six, 5 1/2 weeks of
- 5:49being off kilter and not having your full energy sucks.
- 5:53And I feel for people who go through that more often than I
- 5:58do. It's not fun, but I finally have
- 6:00it back. So we're going to be working on
- 6:02that. We're going to be working on
- 6:03some other filming and putting it all together.
- 6:07But learning this is a big learning curve and I'm changing
- 6:11my approach. So when you are in the need of
- 6:14doing something different, be open to changing your approach,
- 6:17my friends, because it can make all the difference and dive into
- 6:21it. It's going to change you for the
- 6:23better. OK my friends, I hope you have a
- 6:26blessed day and I will see you all tomorrow.
