- 0:00All right, listen up. You've definitely seen the
- 0:02Instagram Reels. Oh, for sure.
- 0:04You know those impossible drone shots of the sky bridge?
- 0:06The ones where it's just hanging over this ridiculously green
- 0:09jungle? You see flashes of white sand
- 0:11and of course the cheap duty free beer.
- 0:13It's everywhere online. But here is the deep dark secret
- 0:18line. Collie is probably the most
- 0:19confusing, the most paradoxical island in all of Southeast Asia.
- 0:24It truly is. I mean, you're dealing with a
- 0:26geopolitical oddity, a tax haven and a globally recognized UNESCO
- 0:31Geo Forest Park all kind of all wrapped into one and.
- 0:35It's ancient, so. Ancient.
- 0:37We're talking rock formations that are over 550 million years
- 0:41old. When you're standing in the
- 0:42Killam Karsh Geo Forest Park, it feels, well, it feels
- 0:46prehistoric, like you've been dropped into Jurassic Park.
- 0:49You can drive 20 minutes down a perfectly paved road, and then
- 0:52suddenly you're hit with this strip of like, fast food chains
- 0:56and souvenir shops that feels weirdly, almost unsettlingly
- 1:01suburban. Exactly.
- 1:02And that contradiction is really why we're here today.
- 1:04Today we are doing a deep dive into Langkawi, Malaysia.
- 1:08We are because it is fully open, the flight routes are back and
- 1:12the internal prices are shifting in ways that can really affect
- 1:16how you plan your trip. But we're doing this for two
- 1:18very specific wallets. Right, because the value
- 1:21proposition changes completely depending on your budget.
- 1:23Completely O. Our mission is to extract the
- 1:26absolute maximum value for two distinct traveler profiles.
- 1:31First, we have the backpacker. You're on, let's say a $50 a day
- 1:35maximum budget. Hostels are your life, street
- 1:38food is your fuel, and you're just trying to get as much
- 1:40nature as you can on a shoestring.
- 1:42And second, we're guiding the mid range comfort traveler.
- 1:45You've budgeted maybe 150 to $250 a day.
- 1:49You're looking for those boutique vibes.
- 1:50You want private tours. And crucially, time and comfort
- 1:54are worth more to you than just saving if you ring it here and
- 1:56there. And timing is everything.
- 1:58I mean Langkawi is technically open all year round, but if you
- 2:01want that perfect experience. Oh, you have to be strategic.
- 2:05We're really focusing on that sweet spot just after the big
- 2:08holidays. So think January through March.
- 2:11The huge crowds have left but the weather is still perfect,
- 2:14dry, sunny and the seas are totally flat.
- 2:17That's when you unlock the real value.
- 2:19So yeah, planning is key here. Longkawi is not a place you can
- 2:22just, you know, show up and wander around.
- 2:25You have to know the traps. And I've got three specific
- 2:27traps that I think snag first timers every single time.
- 2:31They're the budget killers. So I want to challenge you on
- 2:33this. What's the single biggest
- 2:35logistical mistake people make? OK, that's a great place to
- 2:38start. So the three big traps, Number
- 2:40one, that duty free status is a complete trap if you don't know
- 2:44what you're buying. OK, people assume everything is
- 2:47cheap, but then they get shocked when, say, a camera is the same
- 2:51price as it is in Kuala Lumpur. It's not a free for all.
- 2:54So you have to be targeted. OK, what's #2 the one that hits
- 2:57your wallet every every single day.
- 2:59The sheer scale of the place. Trip number 2 is that this is
- 3:02absolutely not a walking island. People just they completely
- 3:07underestimate how big it is. If you're relying on taxis or
- 3:09even Grab for every little trip, you will just bleed your budget
- 3:13dry. Especially that backpacker's $50
- 3:15limit. Oh, it would be gone by noon.
- 3:17Mobility is the core challenge you have to solve.
- 3:19OK, that's critical. And the third surprise, the one
- 3:24about the food scene. The third trap, and this is my
- 3:26favorite 1 is that the absolute best food on this entire island?
- 3:31It's not in some fancy beachfront cafe.
- 3:34No. It's found in a rotating
- 3:36collection of parking lots and fields.
- 3:39It's the night market. If you miss that, you have
- 3:41missed the heart of Langkawi's food.
- 3:43That sets a really interesting stage.
- 3:45Before we jump in, though, we have to address the major
- 3:47downside. The big expectation Check.
- 3:50Let's talk about the water. Absolutely.
- 3:52If you are flying here thinking you're getting the Maldives or
- 3:54even, you know, Malaysia's own Prehension islands, you're
- 3:58setting yourself up for a big disappointment.
- 4:00The visibility can be what, almost 0?
- 4:03Genuinely 0 right off the main beaches.
- 4:06It's an emerald green island, not a sapphire blue 1.
- 4:09You have to get that in your head before you book.
- 4:11If your whole trip is about world class snorkeling, you
- 4:14should probably pivot right now. Right.
- 4:17So our initial verdict before we dive into the segments is this.
- 4:20Langkawi is sort of the Toyota Camry of islands.
- 4:24It's reliable, it's comfortable, it's safe.
- 4:27And it's utterly predictable. It is the best soft landing in
- 4:31Southeast Asia for a first timer.
- 4:34The infrastructure is solid, crime is basically non existent.
- 4:37Because of that safety and predictability, it's probably
- 4:40the most boring destination you can imagine for a hardcore
- 4:43thrill seeker. Or someone looking for those
- 4:45huge all night parties, which is a massive misconception we need
- 4:49to tackle. That's the mission.
- 4:51Let's unpack this whole contradiction.
- 4:52OK, let's. Get into the modern context.
- 4:54Why are we talking about Langkawi right now?
- 4:56Well, the post pandemic flight routes are back but the pricing
- 4:59has shifted. For years, Langkawi was always
- 5:02that reliably cheaper option compared to, say, Phuket.
- 5:05That gap is closing, though, unfortunately, You know,
- 5:08inflation, demand, the baseline cost has just edged up a little
- 5:13bit, so the value isn't as obvious as it used to be.
- 5:15You have to be more strategic now to find those savings.
- 5:18And the main thing that's twisting people's expectations
- 5:20is social media. Yeah, you go on Instagram and
- 5:23all you see are these influencers at, you know, the
- 5:25Super high end places like the daytime or The Four Seasons.
- 5:30And we need to be clear about that.
- 5:31That is the top 1% experience. Those resorts are their
- 5:35architectural marvels built deep into the rainforest on their own
- 5:39private beaches. They have nature guides,
- 5:41incredible spas. They are selling you absolute
- 5:45perfection and isolation. For what, 800 to $1500 a.
- 5:49Night at least, but that is not the reality for the other 99% of
- 5:52people who visit. No, the common reality is all
- 5:54centered around the main strip, Pantai Shenang, and let's be
- 5:58honest about the vibe there. It's a long, bustling, loud
- 6:01strip. It's a real mishmash of cheap
- 6:04souvenir shops, these aggressive duty free outlets, burger
- 6:07joints. A lot of people say it has a
- 6:09real 1990s holiday town feel. It does.
- 6:12It's gritty, it's noisy, very commercial.
- 6:15It doesn't have that curated, you know, minimalist aesthetic
- 6:18you might find in Seminak in Bali.
- 6:20It hasn't been totally gentrified yet.
- 6:23Which I think is actually part of its appeal for our
- 6:24backpacker, right? It keeps the prices for normal
- 6:27stuff really low. But for our mid range traveler
- 6:30who wants some sophistication, that first look at Sunang can be
- 6:34a real shock. A huge shock.
- 6:35They need to know to look beyond it, and they also need to
- 6:38understand the scale. Langkawi isn't some tiny little
- 6:42island you can just walk around. No, it's an archipelago of 99
- 6:45islands and the main island itself is massive.
- 6:47It's about the size of Singapore.
- 6:48But without the density, of course, you can drive 15 minutes
- 6:51inland and you're just, you're surrounded by jungle and these
- 6:54beautiful green Paddy fields with water Buffalo.
- 6:57It's a real nature escape once you leave those commercial.
- 7:00Zones. And this brings us back to the
- 7:02biggest source of disappointment for people.
- 7:04The water. The water misconception.
- 7:05Yeah, people see pictures of the tropics and they expect that
- 7:08crystal clear turquoise water. And they get emerald green
- 7:12nutrient rich water. We should probably explain why
- 7:15that is. It's not pollution.
- 7:16No, not at all. It's geology.
- 7:18It's the environment. Langkawi has these huge ancient
- 7:22mangrove ecosystems. Right in the Killam Cars park.
- 7:25Exactly. And mangroves are the nurseries
- 7:28of the sea. They thrive in that kind of
- 7:30brackish shallow water. So the runoff from the jungle
- 7:33and the limestone formations, it releases all these tannins and
- 7:37nutrients. Which makes the water cloudy but
- 7:39ecologically rich. Precisely.
- 7:41So the big takeaways? You just cannot snorkel off the
- 7:44main beach. It's not possible.
- 7:46If that's your main reason for going, you need to change your
- 7:48destination. Let's talk about the other big
- 7:51assumption people make the nightlife.
- 7:53The duty free status means alcohol is incredibly cheap, so
- 7:57people assume it must be a massive party island right?
- 8:00Like Gofangan or something. And it could not be further from
- 8:03the truth. Longkawi's in the state of Kita,
- 8:05which is a fairly conservative part of Malaysia.
- 8:07The local culture really emphasizes, you know, modesty
- 8:11and family life. So the nightlife is almost non
- 8:14existent. It's surprisingly subdued.
- 8:15It's very concentrated in one little strip in Pantai Shenang.
- 8:20Outside of that tiny area, the entire island is basically
- 8:22asleep by 9:00. The idea of some big party scene
- 8:26just doesn't exist. So the key take away here is
- 8:28critical, especially for our backpacker.
- 8:31If you want a high energy party scene, look elsewhere, go to
- 8:35Thailand. For sure, but if your goal is
- 8:37quiet sunsets with an impossibly cheap glass of wine every night,
- 8:41well then Langkawi offers absolutely unparalleled value.
- 8:44OK, let's walk through the moment you land the arrival vibe
- 8:48at LGK airport. This is actually where the value
- 8:51starts to show. It's a great little airport, so
- 8:54effective. It's small, modern and you get
- 8:56through incredibly fast. You often just walk across the
- 8:58tarmac and you're at immigration in what, 5 minutes?
- 9:01And the second you step outside, you get hit by that feeling.
- 9:04It's not just heat, it's that heavy humid air and the.
- 9:06Smell. It's not city smell, it's it's
- 9:08damp earth and vegetation and the sea.
- 9:12It immediately tells you that you're deep in the tropics.
- 9:14OK, now for the most important decision you'll make in that
- 9:17first hour transport. You walk out of arrivals and you
- 9:21are just swarmed by these aggressive car rental touts.
- 9:25And this is the crucial warning. Do not engage with them.
- 9:28You're hot, you're tired, and they know it.
- 9:31Their prices are inflated and the insurance is questionable at
- 9:36best. The solution is so simple,
- 9:38Download and use Grab. It's the king of ride sharing in
- 9:41Southeast Asia, and it works perfectly on Langkawi.
- 9:44It's everywhere, Yeah. And to give you a price check, a
- 9:47ride from the airport to Pantai Senang is always about 20 to 25
- 9:51ringgit. Which is what, five U.S.
- 9:52dollars? Roughly $5 for a clean, air
- 9:55conditioned, reliable ride. It just sets such a good tone
- 9:57for the trip. And that drives a story in
- 9:59itself. The roads are amazing actually.
- 10:01Smooth, wide, well maintained. But the visual contrast is so
- 10:05jarring. One minute you're driving past
- 10:07these beautiful rice paddies, you're seeing water Buffalo just
- 10:10chilling in the mud. It feels so peaceful and remote.
- 10:13And then bam, you hit sang and it's just an explosion of neon
- 10:18signs, duty free chocolate shops and the big kind of tacky
- 10:21underwater world aquarium. It's a complete sensory
- 10:24overload. And for our mid range traveler,
- 10:26that can be a really negative first impression.
- 10:29You might think you've made a terrible mistake.
- 10:30Which is why we recommend the geographical split.
- 10:33If Senang feels too tacky for you, Look North, look at Tanjung
- 10:36Ru. It's a totally different world
- 10:38up there. It's just silence.
- 10:40Private beaches, those dramatic limestone casts.
- 10:45It has that genuine Jurassic Park feel.
- 10:47So your first 24 hour checklist, number one check in #2 get cash.
- 10:53ATMs are everywhere, which is a huge plus.
- 10:55And #3 the most important step, the price calibration.
- 10:59Go to a convenience store like a 711.
- 11:01This is where you set your price anchor for the whole trip.
- 11:03Look at specific things. You'll see a can of beer for
- 11:05about 3 ringgit. That's $0.70.
- 11:07Or a giant Toblerone bar, an expensive import everywhere else
- 11:11for maybe a dollar. This immediately tells you that
- 11:14the fun stuff, the consumables, they're shockingly cheap, and
- 11:17that becomes your baseline for all your other spending.
- 11:20All right, let's do the money deep dive.
- 11:21The detailed budget breakdown we need to show how long Kawi
- 11:25offers great value, but only if you stick to a strategy.
- 11:28Let's start with the backpacker. The goal is $50 a day, Max.
- 11:33This takes discipline, but it is absolutely doable.
- 11:36OK, accommodation. You're in hostels mostly around
- 11:39Senang. You can get a clean dorm bed
- 11:42with AC for what, 8 to $12.00 a night?
- 11:44Consistently, places like Bed Attitude or Zachary Guest House,
- 11:48they're basic, but they're clean and they do the job.
- 11:51So your accommodation is less than 25% of your daily budget
- 11:55right there. Now, food.
- 11:57This is the category that makes the $50 budget actually work.
- 12:00It is. If you commit to eating local,
- 12:03you win. You go to the nasi khandar
- 12:05stalls where it's like a cafeteria with rice and curries.
- 12:08You can get a huge filling meal for two or three dollars.
- 12:11And breakfast is rhodi kanai, that flaky flatbread with Curry
- 12:15sauce for like $0.50. You can easily eat 3 great meals
- 12:18for under $10. A day.
- 12:20That's the bedrock of the budget.
- 12:21Now transport. This is the non negotiable part.
- 12:23You have to rent a scooter. You have to.
- 12:25You can get a beat up but reliable scooter for 7 to $9 a
- 12:29day. Gas is basically free if you
- 12:31don't do this and you take grabs instead.
- 12:35Two round trips a day will cost you 20 bucks.
- 12:38And your budget is blown. The scooter is freedom and its
- 12:41financial survival. And your activities become free.
- 12:44You hang out on the beach, you hike up to the Seven Wells
- 12:46waterfall, which is a fantastic free attraction.
- 12:49So all in, a smart backpacker can operate for 35 to $40 a day
- 12:54and no problem. OK, let's pivot to the mid range
- 12:57comfort traveler, the one with 150 to 250 a day.
- 13:01You said this is where the Longkawi shines.
- 13:03Defend that. Why is $200 here better than 200
- 13:07in Phuket? It's the quality of the
- 13:09accommodation you get for that price.
- 13:10You're not in a hostel or a big chain resort, you're looking at
- 13:13boutique places like Temple Tree or Ambong Ambonging.
- 13:17What are those like? They're often refurbished
- 13:19antique Malay villas or these beautiful rainforest studios.
- 13:22You can get a stunning private chalet with its own porch, a
- 13:25beautiful pool and a real sense of quiet and space for 80 to
- 13:29$120.00 a night. And in Bali, for example, that
- 13:33the same price gets you a nice room, but you're usually right
- 13:36next to a noisy St. Exactly.
- 13:37In Langkawi, that budget buys you silence and space.
- 13:41The accommodation value is just it's incredibly high compared to
- 13:44its rivals. OK, strong argument.
- 13:46What about food for this budget? You mix and match.
- 13:49You still grab that $3 nasi Kander for lunch because it's
- 13:52amazing. But you can have a really nice
- 13:54seafood dinner on the beach. You know, fresh grilled snapper,
- 13:58huge prawns that'll set you back maybe $40 total for two people.
- 14:04Transport is easy, you're using grabs for comfort, maybe $20 a
- 14:07day. Or you rent a decent little car
- 14:10like a mivy for 25 a day, no scooter hassle.
- 14:13And the activities. This is the key difference.
- 14:15You spend your money on buying privacy in time.
- 14:17So instead of that horrible crowded boat tour, you spend 60
- 14:20or $80.00 for a private boat tour of the.
- 14:23Mangroves, you're buying silence.
- 14:25Yeah, you're buying silence and a tailored experience.
- 14:28It just elevates the whole quality of the trip.
- 14:30Let's get into the food value trap though, because mid range
- 14:34travelers make this mistake. They see the cheap booze and
- 14:37assume everything is cheap. It's not.
- 14:39The simple rule is local food is cheap.
- 14:42Western food is expensive and usually not very good.
- 14:45They have to import everything. Good Cheese, beef, olive oil.
- 14:49So that mediocre hamburger you see for $15?
- 14:53Yeah, you're just paying an island tax on imported
- 14:55ingredients. You are.
- 14:57The advice is simple. Just don't do it.
- 15:00Stick to the incredible Malaysian food.
- 15:01You'll save a ton of money and eat so much better.
- 15:04But the alcohol value is the flip side.
- 15:06It's incredible. It really is.
- 15:08A bottle of wine that's $30 in Kuala Lumpur is $12.00 here.
- 15:12You can get a pint of Guinness for cheaper than a bottle of
- 15:14water sometimes. If you like a daily sundowner,
- 15:17your budget goes 30% further here than anywhere else in the
- 15:20region. We've mentioned the size, but
- 15:22let's do the size reality check again.
- 15:24The island is large. Driving from Senang in the South
- 15:27to Tanjung Ru in the north is a solid 45 minutes.
- 15:31And just getting to the cable car is 30 minutes.
- 15:34Your whole itinerary has to be built around the fact that you
- 15:36will be driving. Underestimating this leads
- 15:39directly to the big traps. OK trap #1 the budget island
- 15:43hopping tour. This is like a no brainer.
- 15:45Signs everywhere. 4 hours, three islands, only $10.
- 15:50And the reality is it's a cattle class disaster.
- 15:53They crammed 20 or 30 people onto a tiny speedboat.
- 15:56It stinks of diesel. They race you from spot to spot
- 16:00on a super strict schedule. You get dumped at pregnant
- 16:03Maiden Lake with hundreds of other people in bright orange
- 16:05life jackets. It's just it's loud, it's
- 16:08impersonal. And they almost always include
- 16:09the eagle feeding thing where they throw out chicken skins.
- 16:12It's terrible for the birds. It's just the sad tourist
- 16:14spectacle. So the fix you said the mid
- 16:16range travelers should spend 80 to $100 on a private boat for
- 16:20the Kilncarst mangrove tour? That's a huge price jump.
- 16:24Can't a backpacker just find a slightly better group tour?
- 16:27I'm going to defend the private boat spend.
- 16:30Even if a couple of backpackers split the cost, the experience
- 16:33is fundamentally different. The mangroves demand silence.
- 16:37On a private boat, you set the pace.
- 16:38You can drift quietly. You can visit the bat caves when
- 16:41they're empty. That $80 buys you an authentic,
- 16:44memorable experience, not a noisy diesel ride.
- 16:47OK, point taken. The quiet is worth the
- 16:50investment. Now for trap #2, the Sky Cab
- 16:54queue. The cable car is a genuine
- 16:57engineering marvel. The views from the sky bridge
- 16:59are amazing, but its popularity is its own worst enemy.
- 17:02If. You show up at midday, you can
- 17:04expect to wait in line for two hours in the brutal heat.
- 17:06It just sucks the soul right out of you. 2 hours of your holiday
- 17:09just gone. So the fix has two options for
- 17:12the backpacker. Goes super early right at 8:30
- 17:15AM when it opens or go late around 4:30 PM.
- 17:19And for the mid range traveller, the fix is mandatory.
- 17:21You buy the VIP Express lane ticket.
- 17:24It costs maybe 10 or $15 extra. And why is that mandatory?
- 17:27Because that $15 buys you back two hours of your life.
- 17:31If you value your time at all, it pays for itself instantly.
- 17:35You just walk past the main queues and get straight on it is
- 17:37the definition of high value spending.
- 17:40And finally, trap #3 the ferry from Penang.
- 17:45People think this is going to be a scenic boat ride.
- 17:47It is the absolute opposite of scenic.
- 17:49It's it's often an exercise in pure misery.
- 17:52The ferry is a sealed metal tube with salty scratched up windows
- 17:56you can't see out of, and the air conditioning is set to like
- 17:59Arctic blast. But the worst part is the sea.
- 18:02It can be incredibly choppy. There's a very high rate of
- 18:04people getting seasick and well, vomiting.
- 18:07The trip is 3 hours on the water, but with boarding and
- 18:10everything it's a 5 hour ordeal. The fix is so simple.
- 18:13Fly. Just fly.
- 18:14Low cost airlines like AirAsia often sell the tickets for the
- 18:17same price as the ferry, around 15 or $20.
- 18:20The flight is 20 minutes. There is zero reason to take
- 18:23that ferry. A quick note on connectivity.
- 18:25Get a SIM card at the airport, Hot link or selcom.
- 18:28The 4G coverage is surprisingly good all over the island.
- 18:31Digital nomads can get solid speeds, 30 to 50 Mbps in most
- 18:35hotels. And for gear 2 musts, first,
- 18:39reef safe sunscreen. It's hard to find there so bring
- 18:41your own. And 2nd, a good waterproof dry
- 18:44bag. You're going to be on boats and
- 18:46you need to protect your phone and camera.
- 18:48Let's talk safety. This is a huge reason why
- 18:51Langkawi is that great soft landing the island feels
- 18:54incredibly. Safe.
- 18:55It really does. The local Malay people are just
- 18:58famously hospitable and polite. It creates a very low stress
- 19:01vibe. Crime is very low.
- 19:03Violent crime against tourists is basically non existent for
- 19:07solo women travelers. Walking around Senang at night
- 19:09feels totally fine. But the biggest dangers aren't
- 19:12human, they're related to transport and wildlife.
- 19:15The biggest transport hazard is driving a scooter at night on
- 19:17the back roads. Those roads have no St. lights.
- 19:20Why is that so dangerous? Because the asphalt stays warm
- 19:23and the local cows in water Buffalo love to sleep on it.
- 19:26So if you're our backpacker on a scooter, you come around a dark
- 19:30corner, you're going to hit a very large animal.
- 19:33And that's a trip ending injury right there.
- 19:34It is, so just avoid driving on those unlit roads at night.
- 19:39And then there's the other threat, the wildlife mafia.
- 19:42The macaque monkeys. You will see them especially
- 19:44around the sky bridge in the waterfalls and they are smart.
- 19:48Frighteningly smart, they will actively unzip backpacks.
- 19:52We've heard stories of them stealing go pros right out of
- 19:54people's bags. So the absolute rule is do not
- 19:57carry food in a plastic bag. It's like a giant invitation.
- 20:00If a monkey comes at you, you drop the bag and you walk away.
- 20:03You do not fight the monkey because if you get scratched or
- 20:06bitten, you're looking at a mandatory series of rabies
- 20:08shots. It's a huge hassle, a big
- 20:10expense, and it will completely ruin your trip.
- 20:13It's not worth it. Just drop the food.
- 20:14OK, what about general health stuff?
- 20:17Tap water is fine for brushing teeth, but drink bottled water.
- 20:21The other big environmental concern is a seasonal risk of
- 20:25box jellyfish. It's rare, but you need to know
- 20:28about it. Look for the red flags on the
- 20:30beach. If the flag is red, don't go in
- 20:33the water. Most hotels are prepared.
- 20:35They have vinegar stations for stings.
- 20:37Also, sand flies can be a problem on the quieter northern
- 20:40beaches, so bring some strong bug repellent.
- 20:43And a quick comfort note for our mid range traveler, if you're
- 20:46staying somewhere remote like near the Dattai, plan your
- 20:50evening transport Grab. Wait times can be up to 20
- 20:53minutes out there, so pre booking is a good idea.
- 20:56All right, we've managed expectations.
- 20:58We've covered the traps. Let's talk about the specific
- 21:00moments that make Longkawi special and the ones that are a
- 21:03total waste of time. My absolute best moment, the
- 21:06biggest surprise was the night market.
- 21:08The fact that it rotates to a different spot every night is
- 21:11genius. It forces you to explore.
- 21:13It's not just a place to buy things, it's a real local food
- 21:16experience. Describe the feeling of being
- 21:19there. It's just it's immersive.
- 21:21You're immediately hit by the smoke from the satay grills.
- 21:24You see these tables piled high with colorful local cakes.
- 21:27The coup? There are giant vats of mango
- 21:30juice everywhere. And the value is insane.
- 21:34For maybe four U.S. dollars, you can get a massive meal of
- 21:38grilled chicken, sticky rice, sambal.
- 21:40It's not made for tourists. It's the real deal.
- 21:43If you skip the night market, you've missed the culinary heart
- 21:46of the island. For me, the best moment was the
- 21:48sky bridge. If you use our trick and buy the
- 21:51Express Pass, the experience is just breathtaking.
- 21:54Describe what it feels like to be up there.
- 21:56You're standing on this curved bridge that's suspended over the
- 21:59jungle by a single pylon. It's an incredible piece of
- 22:02engineering. The wind just howls around you
- 22:05and on a clear day you can literally see the islands of
- 22:08Thailand in the distance. It is absolutely worth the hype,
- 22:11but only if you manage the logistics.
- 22:13OK, on the flip side, the biggest disappointment Eagle
- 22:16Square, the Heron Ling. It's this giant concrete eagle
- 22:20statue in Kuwa, which is the island's pretty uninspiring
- 22:24administrative town. It just feels like you're
- 22:26checking a box. You drive all the way there, you
- 22:27take a selfie with this hot, shadeless concrete eagle and you
- 22:31just think, is this it? It's totally underwhelming.
- 22:33My biggest sensory disappointment was the noise on
- 22:36Pentisenang beach during the day.
- 22:38If you're trying to just relax and read a book, forget it.
- 22:41It's the Jet Skis. It's the jet skis.
- 22:43It's a constant high pitched re re sound all day long.
- 22:48If you want peace and quiet on the sand, you have to go
- 22:51somewhere else, like Tanjung Ru up north.
- 22:54Senang is for activities, not for relaxing.
- 22:57So after hearing all this, if you've decided Langkawi isn't
- 23:00quite right for you, we should offer some alternatives.
- 23:03Right, if your number one priority is that perfect
- 23:06postcard blue water and world class snorkeling.
- 23:09Your alternative is the Prehension Islands on the East
- 23:12Coast of Malaysia. The water quality there is
- 23:14genuinely phenomenal. But, and this is big, but there
- 23:18are major trade-offs. The prehensions are a logistical
- 23:21nightmare to get to compared to Langkawi.
- 23:23It's long bus ride guides and rough speedboat trips.
- 23:26The accommodation is also much more basic, we're talking rustic
- 23:29shacks and the food is generally not as good.
- 23:32Most importantly, they close down completely for the monsoon
- 23:35from November to February, which is peak season for Langkawi.
- 23:38OK, what if your focus is 100% on culture and food and you
- 23:44don't care about swimming at all?
- 23:45Then your alternative is the nearby island of Penang.
- 23:48The trade-offs in Penang are dirty water and terrible
- 23:51traffic, but the upside is huge. It's UNESCO heritage city with
- 23:57arguably the best street food in the world, and the main town,
- 24:00Georgetown, is very walkable. Now, if you want the best of
- 24:04both worlds, we highly recommend the combo itinerary.
- 24:08This is the perfect one week trip.
- 24:10You start with three nights in Penang, you immerse yourself in
- 24:13the culture, you get into a food coma, then you take that easy 20
- 24:17minute flight over to Langkawi for four nights of nature and
- 24:20just pure relaxation. It's the perfect balance.
- 24:23You get the culture shock and the quiet, quiet recovery
- 24:25without the stress of a complicated travel day.
- 24:28It avoids the miserable ferry and gives you a great taste of
- 24:30Malaysia. And for the really adventurous
- 24:32listener, there's an easy international add on.
- 24:34There is you can take a 90 minute ferry, a much calmer ride
- 24:38than the one from Penang from Langkawi straight to Kalipe in
- 24:41Thailand. Which is fantastic.
- 24:42You can have breakfast to Malaysia, hop on a boat and be
- 24:45having lunch on a perfect White Sam Thai beach a couple hours
- 24:48later. It's an amazing way to extend
- 24:50your trip. All right, the moment of truth.
- 24:52Let's run Langkawi through the final verdict matrix for our
- 24:55specific traveler types. First up, the Backpacker 50 day
- 24:59verdict. Yes, but with strict conditions
- 25:02you have to rent that scooter and you have to explore the free
- 25:04nature stuff. If your plan is to just sit in
- 25:07Senang and drink cheap beer, it's not worth the travel
- 25:10hassle. The mid range couple 100 and
- 25:1252150. Day Absolute resounding.
- 25:15Yes, this island is built for you.
- 25:17The value you get on high quality, quiet accommodation is
- 25:20incredible, and you can afford the private tours and express
- 25:24passes that just eliminate all the stress.
- 25:26It makes for a very romantic, high quality holiday.
- 25:29I get the family trip. Yes definitely.
- 25:32It's a very low stress destination for parents, it's
- 25:34incredibly safe, there's kid friendly food everywhere, good
- 25:37hospitals, easy transport with grab and fun attractions like
- 25:41the wildlife park. And finally, the luxury
- 25:44traveler. Verdict Yes, but only if you
- 25:46stay at the daytime or The Four Seasons.
- 25:48Those are two of the best resorts in the world.
- 25:50If you stay within those bubbles, your trip will be
- 25:52flawless. If you venture out, the rest of
- 25:54the island might feel a little too greedy for your taste.
- 25:57So our final analogy holds. Longkawi is the Toyota Camry of
- 26:01islands. It is, it's reliable, safe,
- 26:04comfortable and it gets you where you need to go with a 0
- 26:07drama. It's not a Ferrari like Bora
- 26:09Bora and it's not a beat up old bus like Kausan Rd.
- 26:13It's a slow burn, it doesn't wow you in the 1st 5 minutes.
- 26:16No, but after a few days of watching hornbills fly over the
- 26:19rainforest while you're enjoying a ridiculously cheap cold beer
- 26:23at sunset, you realize you found this really peaceful, high value
- 26:26retreat and that soft landing was exactly what you needed.
- 26:30So, final actionable advice for you.
- 26:32The best time to go January to March.
- 26:35Dry, sunny, flat seas. The best base.
- 26:38Split your stay. Do 2 nights in Snang for
- 26:41convenience. The two nights of Intangin Roof
- 26:43profound peace and quiet. Safe travels on your own deep
- 26:47dive. And here is a final provocative
- 26:49thought for you to chew on before you go.
- 26:51We all know Langkawi is a duty free haven for alcohol and
- 26:54chocolate, but what other more mundane high-priced items,
- 26:58things that usually have huge import taxes in Asia, like maybe
- 27:01high end dive computers or specialized cycling gear or even
- 27:05niche cosmetics could offer truly incredible unexpected
- 27:08savings if you bought them on the island.
- 27:10Look up the full duty free regulations before you fly.
- 27:14You might find a bargain worth far more than a bottle of wine.
