Transcript
- 0:00You have arrived. Welcome to the Aspy world.
- 0:04Here's where we talk about anything and everything ASD in
- 0:07an upbeat and informative way. And now here's your man on the
- 0:11spectrum, your autism ambassador, Daniel Morgan Jones.
- 0:19So in this video, I'm talking about masking in autism or
- 0:23asperges in women and masking. What is masking?
- 0:26How does it impact people and what can we do to learn more
- 0:28about it and also help people sell?
- 0:31Buckle up and get ready. Hey guys, what's going on?
- 0:33My name is Dan. I have Asperger syndrome in ADHD
- 0:35and make weekly videos all about this stuff.

- 0:42down below. And if you're watching on any
- 0:44other platform, make sure to follow me to see daily videos
- 0:47like this. OK, so there is something really
- 0:50interesting about autistic females or people who are on the
- 0:55autism spectrum and female. This is all to do with masking.
- 1:00And I'm going to get right into it right now.
- 1:02I'd say one of the biggest struggles that face autistic
- 1:05females across the board. And this isn't just females who
- 1:09are, you know, struggling in certain areas of having a
- 1:11difficult time. I think this is all autistic
- 1:14females in general. What is it that is so impactful
- 1:17in their lives? What's the number one thing that
- 1:19impacts them in their daily life?
- 1:20And I would have to say this is masking now.
- 1:24Now, masking actually impacts autistic females to a point or
- 1:27level where I think sometimes they're actually misdiagnosed or
- 1:31under diagnosed because they mask in such a way that prevents
- 1:36the actual people from understanding it.
- 1:38And I'm going to get through all of it right now just so that you
- 1:40can kind of get to where I am because I think this is so
- 1:43important, especially for advocating for autistic women or
- 1:45if you're an autistic woman and you're watching this right now
- 1:47and you want to learn more about it and want to learn more about
- 1:49masking in general. So I'm going to do that whilst
- 1:51I'm just tidying up my area here.
- 1:53So the first one is, you know, why do people with Asperges or
- 1:56why do women with Asperges are often undiagnosed?
- 2:00And because when you think about this, right, masking is a form
- 2:04of pretending that you can fit in in a normal situation or
- 2:07pretending that everything's OK and you're OK with that
- 2:10situation or you're OK dealing with that situation.
- 2:14And this could look like many different forms.
- 2:16It could be like out with friends and socializing and
- 2:18being like, yeah, I'm, I'm cool with friends.
- 2:19I can, I can socialize, I can hang.
- 2:22When in actual fact, you're kind of dying inside.
- 2:24And then when you get home, you're kind of like, it was the
- 2:26most painful thing I'd have to do.
- 2:27I had to go. And, you know, be with so many
- 2:30people in a certain situation and then you've had to pretend
- 2:33become a character, if you will, just to fit in.
- 2:36And that's not who we are. We're humans and we're autistic.
- 2:39So we're going to have difficulties and stresses in
- 2:41areas. And because of this, when you're
- 2:44going through the diagnostic criteria or the process with a
- 2:47professional, the professional, the professional is going to
- 2:49say, hey, do you have any issues in socializing?
- 2:53And people who know you all all know about you are going to be
- 2:56like, actually, no, because I've seen them go to pizza parties
- 3:00and pool parties and they're absolutely fine.
- 3:02There's no issues there. Because of this, it leads to a
- 3:05under diagnosis or a missed diagnosis or a untrue diagnosis.
- 3:09And what you'll see is the under diagnosing of autistic women.
- 3:13So whereas women on the autonomous spectrum are actually
- 3:17probably more common than males, the diagnosis is the other way
- 3:22around. There's more males commonly
- 3:24diagnosed with autism than there are females.
- 3:27This is crazy, right? OK, but what does masking really
- 3:31look like in daily life? Right.
- 3:33So what does masking look like in daily life?
- 3:37Masking can look very much like this.
- 3:39Say you're an autistic female and you are wanting to go to
- 3:44school, university, or even just work.
- 3:46You work in your job and you go there now before you leave the
- 3:49house. It's horrible because that's
- 3:52your comfort zone, That's your safe space.
- 3:53You know that when you're inside your house, you're comfortable
- 3:57and nothing else is going to top that, right?
- 4:00However, if soon you go out of the house, what tends to happen
- 4:04is you then have to pretend to be someone because you have to
- 4:07engage in small talk with somebody.
- 4:08So the first person you see at the bus stop be like, oh,
- 4:10weather's good. You're like, yeah, OK.
- 4:12But whereas autistic men would be like, I don't deal with
- 4:16weather talk, I'm not going to engage in this, whatever.
- 4:19I'll be looked as being odd for not doing it.
- 4:21Autistic females will feel the pressure and societal need to
- 4:25want to kind of converse and have that conversation and be
- 4:28like, yeah, the weather's nice and stuff.
- 4:30And it's painful. It's it's difficult.
- 4:32Then you go to work and then you get your clock in, oh, good
- 4:35morning, how was your weekend, blah, blah, blah.
- 4:36And then the assistive female again then has to pretend that
- 4:39she's interested in this conversation when you're not
- 4:44because I have a rule an autistic people see the world
- 4:46like this. And let me know in the comments
- 4:47if you feel like this because I feel like most autistic people I
- 4:50know feel like this. They will not say anything to
- 4:53other people unless it's productive to the group as a
- 4:57whole. As in like, if this is not going
- 4:59to improve conditions for mankind, then why are we even
- 5:01saying it? Right?
- 5:02Because we're intellectual. We're people who are like
- 5:05thinking outside of the box. We're thinking on a on a
- 5:07different scale. So all of this talk, imagine
- 5:10this all day along the wall, cool lunchtime meetings,
- 5:14everybody you see, clients, everything, even friends.
- 5:17And then you come home and then it's it's over.
- 5:22You don't have to mask anymore and you can be yourself.
- 5:24But what is the toll that's been taken?
- 5:27What happens when you're an autistic person who has masked,
- 5:31who is who's done this all day? Well, this is the emotional toll
- 5:36that happens. You come home and you hit an
- 5:40emotional burnout. You've had to pretend to be
- 5:43somebody all day, feeling uncomfortable, just completely
- 5:46distressed all day, but trying to hold it together.
- 5:49And then you come home and just blah.
- 5:50You just like let loose. It all comes out.
- 5:52You feel emotionally drained. You're tired.
- 5:55You've got what? A sensory hangover, an emotional
- 5:57hangover and the scary pies. You've got to do it all again
- 6:00tomorrow or even tonight. You could have friends come over
- 6:02for dinner. Your family don't want to come
- 6:03over to see you may have a boyfriend or a girlfriend and
- 6:05they want to come over and they want a hand.
- 6:06And it's like, gosh damn it, like how do how do we get how do
- 6:10we get out of that? How do we how do we become not
- 6:13that, you know what I mean? And that to me is probably one
- 6:17of the biggest things and the most disabling things about
- 6:19autism and females for the female perspective is that
- 6:21masking kicks their butt constantly.
- 6:25But some of the other parts of that is apparent is that masking
- 6:29can actually delay some of the support in which you most viably
- 6:32need. Now, if you're an autistic
- 6:33female, think about this. You're maybe even self diagnosed
- 6:37and all you're diagnosed and you want support.
- 6:41You want help you need. Maybe it's governmental support,
- 6:43maybe it's support from your friends and family.
- 6:45But when they say, hey, how's it going?
- 6:47You're going to go, yeah, I'm OK, I'm good, I'm fine.
- 6:50You know, you're dying inside like you are like, I need help,
- 6:54you know, and that creates a, a, a deficit of support.
- 6:58You, you have a lack of support or a lack of people who are
- 7:01there to help you and support you in the way where, you know,
- 7:05you need a group, you need a team around you.
- 7:07You need the support network. And this is one of the things I
- 7:09talk about in, in a lot of my videos, like the autistic
- 7:11support network and it's your personal autistic support
- 7:14network. It's not just like, oh, I go to
- 7:17the, the YMCA or I go to my local clinic and there's my
- 7:20support network. We all have support networks,
- 7:22but certain support networks consist of many things.
- 7:25And it could be professionals in the industry helping you out,
- 7:28helping you navigate through life.
- 7:29Because life can be a mega doozy if you don't have any support in
- 7:34place. And this masking kind of conveys
- 7:37that and it actually kicks butt. So that being said, if you're an
- 7:40autistic female, just remember that there is help available.
- 7:45Don't try and mask too much. Try and be yourself.
- 7:48There's nothing wrong with masking and I'll talk about it
- 7:50in a second. Like the good and the bad.
- 7:51This is today's sponsor. Hey, just a heads up guys, if
