- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to In the
- 0:03Stillness. Thank you for joining me on
- 0:06today's episode. Happy Monday.
- 0:09I took a few days off as I've been traveling, but I hope that
- 0:13y'all had a wonderful weekend and I'm super excited to be back
- 0:18home to be recording and to get to open up the Word together
- 0:22today. If you've been listening the
- 0:24past couple weeks, you know that we've been walking through 1st
- 0:28and 2nd Thessalonians and it is honestly felt so timely.
- 0:33Of course it is, because God's timing always is.
- 0:37But these letters talk a lot about the day of the Lord and
- 0:41the return of Jesus, and we're living in a time when that is
- 0:47all the talk everyone loves to speculate about the end times
- 0:51you hear everywhere. You hear it through politics,
- 0:55national news, documentaries, even books and podcasts.
- 1:00People speculate about the signs, the timelines, and really
- 1:05just what is coming next. But what I love about Scripture
- 1:09is that God does not leave us guessing about what actually
- 1:13matters the most. So with that being said, let's
- 1:17go ahead and hop into Second Thessalonians chapter 2.
- 1:21Reading through verses one through 4, Paul is going to
- 1:24address confusion about the return of Jesus and give
- 1:29believers a warning about deception concerning the coming
- 1:35of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to Him.
- 1:39We ask you, brothers and sisters, not to become easily
- 1:43unsettled or alarmed by the teaching allegedly from us,
- 1:48whether by prophecy or by word of mouth or by letter, asserting
- 1:54that the day of the Lord has already come.
- 1:57Don't let anyone deceive you in any way, for that day will not
- 2:01come until the rebellion occurs and the man of lawlessness is
- 2:05revealed, the man doomed to destruction.
- 2:09He will oppose and will exalt himself over everything that is
- 2:13called God or is worshipped, so that he sets himself up in God's
- 2:18temple, proclaiming himself to be God.
- 2:23OK, the first thing Paul emphasizes here is not to be
- 2:29easily unsettled or alarmed. So apparently there were false
- 2:34teachings circulating, people claiming divine revelations,
- 2:38spreading rumors, even writing letters pretending to be from
- 2:42Paul, saying that the day of the Lord had already come.
- 2:46And Paul's warning is simple, but it's so strong.
- 2:50Do not be deceived. And deception only works, I
- 2:56think, when we stop measuring things against the truth because
- 3:01this feels so relevant today. Think about how many voices
- 3:06compete for our attention. Books.
- 3:09We have so many podcasts, Yes, even this podcast as I'm
- 3:13speaking into it, Documentaries, social media.
- 3:18We have influencers and news outlets.
- 3:21Yes, these things can be so helpful.
- 3:24And I believe God absolutely uses people to prophecy, to
- 3:29encourage, to teach, and to warn.
- 3:32But they are not meant to be substitutes for the Word of God.
- 3:37They're supplements. And everything we believe should
- 3:40be filtered through Scripture first.
- 3:44We see in Acts 17 verse 11, this group of Jews.
- 3:48They are being praised because they examined the Scriptures
- 3:52daily to see if what they were hearing was actually true.
- 3:57And in first John 41, we're told to test the spirits to see
- 4:01whether they are from God. So Paul's message is so clear.
- 4:06Do not be easily persuaded. Truth is anchored in God's Word.
- 4:14Now Paul also mentioned something really significant
- 4:17here. He says the man of lawlessness.
- 4:21And this is referring to what many understand as the
- 4:24Antichrist, the ultimate figure of evil who will oppose God in
- 4:28the end before Christ's return. And Paul describes him as
- 4:34someone who one will oppose God, two, exalt himself, and three,
- 4:40present himself as the solution. But I want us to remember
- 4:45something important. Scripture tells us there have
- 4:49actually been antichrists in every generation.
- 4:52And 1st John 218 we read you have heard that the Antichrist
- 4:57is coming. Even now many antichrists have
- 5:00come. And 1st John 43 it speaks about
- 5:04the spirit of the Antichrist already at work in the world.
- 5:09Now y'all, Satan is not omniscient like God.
- 5:13He does not get to claim that title or description.
- 5:18He does not know the exact timing of the end.
- 5:22In Matthew 24 verse 36, Jesus says that only the Father knows
- 5:26the day and the hour, not even the Son.
- 5:30So many scholars believe that Satan is constantly raising up
- 5:35potential Antichrist people or movements that oppose God, and
- 5:40he's building toward the ultimate one that Paul is
- 5:43describing, which means that there is a spiritual battle
- 5:47happening all of the time, 24/7. But here's the key take away for
- 5:53us. Our job is not to spend time
- 5:58obsessing over the speculation about who the Antichrist is.
- 6:03Our Calling is to stand firm in our faith, to resist any and
- 6:09everything that threatens it. Because deception is one of the
- 6:14enemy's primary strategies. And deception it's rarely
- 6:19obvious it's not meant to be. That's why we see in Ephesians
- 6:23612 that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but
- 6:28against the rulers, against authorities, against the powers
- 6:32of this Dark World, and against the spiritual forces of evil.
- 6:36So we are to stay spiritually alert, grounded in the Word, and
- 6:42we are to stay aware of the Holy Spirit's presence in our lives.
- 6:47But here's the encouragement in all of this.
- 6:51None of this is meant to make us fearful, are anxious because
- 6:56even though evil, it is all around us and it is constantly
- 7:00rising. Deception may increase, but the
- 7:04end of this story, it has already been written.
- 7:09Jesus has already won the battle.
- 7:12One of my favorite verses that I've said several times in this
- 7:15podcast, John 1633, Jesus says in this world you will have
- 7:21trouble, but take heart. I have overcome the world, but
- 7:27notice the wording not I will overcome.
- 7:30I have overcome. The victory was secured through
- 7:35the cross and through Jesus's resurrection.
- 7:39We're living in what many call the already, but not yet.
- 7:44So Jesus has already won the victory, but we're still walking
- 7:49throughout a broken world where sin and suffering exists.
- 7:55I once heard an analogy from a pastor that stuck with me.
- 8:00Jesus won the victory, but he still carries the scars from the
- 8:03cross. And in a similar way, we may
- 8:08experience wounds from this world.
- 8:11We see this in the pain, in the trials and hardship, the
- 8:15spiritual battles. But those wounds can be healed
- 8:20and covered and filled by the grace and love of God.
- 8:24So oftentimes, we're going to feel the battle, but the outcome
- 8:29has already been decided. And actually, something really
- 8:33cool happened this morning as I was wrapping up, writing down my
- 8:37notes for this episode, a devo landed in my e-mail and it said
- 8:42this the victory I call you to walk in is already within you.
- 8:48I want to show you my victory, take my gift of today's victory
- 8:53and rest in knowing that I'm already preparing tomorrow's
- 8:57triumph. That's obviously like the Lord
- 9:02is speaking to you. And I just thought, wow, God,
- 9:06that timing. Because that's exactly the truth
- 9:10that we see in Scripture. Jesus has already secured the
- 9:14victory. And each day that we wake up and
- 9:18we have breath in our lungs, we get to walk in that reality,
- 9:22trusting that God is still working, still moving, and he's
- 9:27still preparing us for what comes next.
- 9:31So as we close, I want to leave you with something that the Lord
- 9:35put on my heart as I was writing down my notes.
- 9:39Paul says that the Antichrist will oppose God, exalt himself,
- 9:43and present himself as this solution.
- 9:46But if we're being truly honest, sometimes it's easy to create
- 9:51small gods in our own lives too. So ask yourself this, as I did
- 9:57myself, is there anything in my life that I am elevating above
- 10:02God? Anything that I'm looking to for
- 10:07validation, identity, or fulfillment that only God can
- 10:13ultimately provide? It could look like success.
- 10:17Maybe it's approval or control. But Paul's warning, it reminds
- 10:22us, stay spiritually sober, keep our hearts fully devoted to the
- 10:28Lord. Because if we're living every
- 10:31single day ready for Jesus's return, walking closely with
- 10:36him, submitted to his Spirit, we don't need to be consumed with
- 10:41all of the speculation about every detail of the end times.
- 10:45We're simply to be ready for our King, for our bridegroom,
- 10:49whenever he comes. So the challenge for today,
- 10:54instead of obsessing over the timelines or the speculation,
- 10:58let's focus our eyes on what really matters.
- 11:03If Jesus returned today, would my life show that I was ready?
- 11:09Let's close out in prayer. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 11:16for the Word of God that You have tangibly given us that we
- 11:22get to read and renew our minds to.
- 11:26Would you give us discernment so that we are not easily deceived?
- 11:31Father, help us to stay rooted, so grounded in Scripture above
- 11:36every other voice. Would you search our hearts and
- 11:41reveal anything that we have allowed to take your place or
- 11:46anything that's even competing for that spot in our hearts?
- 11:50Help us live each day ready for your return, standing firm in
- 11:56the faith and trusting and living in the victory that
- 12:00you've already won. Jesus, we pray this in your
- 12:03name. Amen.
- 12:05OK guys, well that is what I have for today's episode.
- 12:09Praying that y'all can learn some things and that the Lord
- 12:13continues speaking to your heart and encouraging you on this
- 12:18Monday. I'll see you on the next
- 12:20episode.
