- 0:53Speaker 5: Little girl in our neighborhood her.
- 0:57Speaker 6: Name is charlotte johnson and she's really looking good i
- 1:01Speaker 6: had to go and see her so i called her.
- 1:04Speaker 7: On the phone i walked over to.
- 1:06Speaker 6: Her house and this was going on her brother was
- 1:11Speaker 6: on the sofa eating.
- 1:13Speaker 8: Chocolate pie mama.
- 1:15Speaker 6: Was in the kitchen cutting chicken up to fry daddy
- 1:19Speaker 6: was in the backyard rolling up.
- 1:21Speaker 1: A garden hose Country Music Hall of Famer.
- 1:24Speaker 9: John Anderson, we learned yesterday, had passed away unexpectedly at
- 1:26Speaker 9: the age of 71.
- 1:27Speaker 1: He had some great songs.
- 1:27Speaker 4: We'll be playing.
- 1:28Speaker 10: Some of those today on the program.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Coming up, we're going to hear from Lane Kiffin. The
- 1:52Speaker 1: fighting LSU Tigers going on the road to play the
- 1:57Speaker 1: Auburn Tigers. High school report, Des Ricks, also the Clark
- 2:03Speaker 1: Eisenhower outdoor edition in the second hour, including some nasty
- 2:09Speaker 1: animal attacks for you. And as we know, if they
- 2:13Speaker 1: happen in California, shame on the people who instigated them.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Ross Dellinger, who is pretty connected in college football, says
- 2:22Speaker 1: as part of the new agreement with ESPN, the CFP
- 2:27Speaker 1: cannot expand beyond 24 teams through the current six-year contract
- 2:31Speaker 1: through 2032. But ESPN can sub-license six of the 12
- 2:38Speaker 1: additional games to one new media partner, or TNT will
- 2:45Speaker 1: be allowed to extend their current sub-licensing agreement. Interesting story
- 2:53Speaker 1: on Yahoo, where the president of the University of Miami
- 2:58Speaker 1: is rattling chains. Miami positioning itself for a move into
- 3:05Speaker 1: the top financial stratosphere. He didn't say that the SEC
- 3:11Speaker 1: or the Big Ten want them, but He said, you
- 3:15Speaker 1: cannot lock us into a conference. Echevarria says the Big
- 3:20Speaker 1: Ten and SEC are distributing an average of $ 25 million
- 3:25Speaker 1: more per school than the ACC and will probably double
- 3:31Speaker 1: that with the new TV contract. He says, we sit
- 3:36Speaker 1: in the second tier. It's a reason we don't get
- 3:40Speaker 1: a vote on the 2014 playoff. And the Big Ten
- 3:44Speaker 1: and SEC do. More college football tonight. James Madison undefeated
- 3:51Speaker 1: at Appalachian State. This could be a good game. This
- 3:55Speaker 1: is on the U. Liberty at Kennesaw State.
- 3:59Speaker 11: No.
- 4:01Speaker 1: East Carolina at Memphis.
- 4:03Speaker 12: Meh.
- 4:04Speaker 1: We'll see. More games tomorrow night before the full slate
- 4:08Speaker 1: on Saturday. We learned yesterday that former Texas A &
- 4:11Speaker 1: M football and track start Toya Jones out of Refurio
- 4:16Speaker 1: passed away after suffering a heart attack at the age
- 4:20Speaker 1: of 49. Uh, anyway, uh, Jones was best known for
- 4:29Speaker 1: basically a tackle that saved the big 12 championship game
- 4:32Speaker 1: in 1998 against Kansas state. He was also a track
- 4:36Speaker 1: star during his time. And, uh, told by most that
- 4:42Speaker 1: the best athlete ever to come out of Refurio. Steve
- 4:46Speaker 1: Sarkeesian had a Zoom call with media that covers the
- 4:51Speaker 1: University of Texas today and said, somebody told me today
- 4:58Speaker 1: that we lost the Aw Shucks kid, speaking of Arch Mannings,
- 5:03Speaker 1: you know, and we've created something else. I don't know
- 5:07Speaker 1: if we lost him, We created this, you know. We did,
- 5:12Speaker 1: all of us, y'all included, me included, the whole thing.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Everybody on ESPN, we've created this. So we'll see what
- 5:20Speaker 1: comes out of it. He's edgy right now. I appreciate
- 5:24Speaker 1: that about him. At some point, he's got to fight back.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The best way to fight back is playing good football
- 5:31Speaker 1: with his teammates and enjoying playing good football with his teammates.
- 5:36Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to watching him compete on Saturday. The
- 5:40Speaker 1: Longhorns host Ole Miss Saturday evening. Utah senior defensive tackle
- 5:47Speaker 1: Jamal Wallace is under investigation for the alleged sexual assault
- 5:52Speaker 1: of a woman and is also accused of sharing videos
- 5:56Speaker 1: of the incident on social media. Wallace was suspended indefinitely
- 6:02Speaker 1: from the Utes program earlier this month. He was arrested
- 6:07Speaker 1: October 11th for distributing an image and faces five misdemeanor counts.
- 6:14Speaker 1: The arrest documents say he is also being investigated for
- 6:20Speaker 1: sexual assault. I don't know if he did or didn't
- 6:26Speaker 1: do this, but if he posted anything like that on
- 6:31Speaker 1: social media... He should be kicked off the team for
- 6:35Speaker 1: just being an idiot, if nothing else. Just reprehensible. Troy
- 6:41Speaker 1: Aikman's future with ESPN looks like it's coming to a close.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And this morning, his options got a little more limited.
- 6:53Speaker 1: CBS announced they are signing J.J. Watt to a contract
- 6:58Speaker 1: extension to be the lead analyst. with Jim Nance on
- 7:03Speaker 1: NFL football after the network parted ways with Tony Romo.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Aikman's in the final year of a contract with ESPN.
- 7:13Speaker 1: He and Joe Buck made the jump from Fox in
- 7:17Speaker 1: 2022 and have been broadcast partners for 25 years. Highly regarded.
- 7:24Speaker 1: But tensions have been mounting because Buck agreed to a six-year,
- 7:31Speaker 1: $ 108 million contract extension last month. Aikman has not received
- 7:38Speaker 1: an offer and is in the final year of his deal.
- 7:42Speaker 1: The tensions apparently boiled over on air a couple of
- 7:47Speaker 1: weeks ago. Cornell Green never played college football. He played
- 7:53Speaker 1: basketball at Utah State when the Dallas Cowboys signed him
- 7:58Speaker 1: as an undrafted free agent in 1962. He played 13
- 8:04Speaker 1: years for the Cowboys, Pro Bowl honors, won a Super Bowl,
- 8:10Speaker 1: spent nearly 30 years scouting for the Denver Broncos. The
- 8:14Speaker 1: Cowboys releasing a statement saying we are sad to share
- 8:18Speaker 1: the news of the passing of of legend Cornell Green.
- 8:22Speaker 1: Cornell was a true trailblazer, having never played football, yet
- 8:27Speaker 1: becoming a multi-time pro bowler, all-pro, and NFL Super Bowl champion.
- 8:34Speaker 1: He was also a member of the 25th anniversary Cowboy teams.
- 8:39Speaker 1: He never missed a game in 13 seasons. He was
- 8:45Speaker 1: 86 years old. It is reprehensible that Cornell Green is
- 8:52Speaker 1: not in the team's ring of honor. And the Big
- 8:58Speaker 1: Five is no more. The Big Five, coined by Philadelphia
- 9:04Speaker 1: Inquirer sports writer Herb Good, in 1954, when schools around
- 9:12Speaker 1: Philadelphia began playing a round-robin city series against The first
- 9:18Speaker 1: game was 68 years ago when St. Joe's beat Villanova
- 9:23Speaker 1: in front of 2,636 fans at the famed Palestra. Villanova
- 9:31Speaker 1: is leaving the Big Five after this season. The Classic
- 9:38Speaker 1: will feature teams on December 5th of this year. Founding
- 9:43Speaker 1: members Penn, LaSalle, Temple and St. Joseph's will remain Drexel,
- 9:50Speaker 1: which was added in 2023. Uh, so they will continue playing,
- 9:56Speaker 1: but not Villa Nova. Uh, Villanova said in a statement, well,
- 10:06Speaker 1: it was a joint statement, the resumption of a consistent
- 10:09Speaker 1: round-robin format featuring both home and away contests will sustain
- 10:14Speaker 1: traditional rivalries while providing valuable scheduling stability. In an increasingly
- 10:21Speaker 1: complex Division I, yada, yada, yada. In other words, they're
- 10:26Speaker 1: not playing at the Polestar anymore. It doesn't hold enough fans.
- 10:31Speaker 1: They're playing at bigger arenas so they can get more money. Yes,
- 10:36Speaker 1: that's very complex. When you start hearing about complex things
- 10:43Speaker 1: in amateur sports, three words. Follow me. The money.
- 10:51Speaker 12: Always.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Okay.
- 10:54Speaker 1: We're going to hear from LSU coach Lane Kiffin when
- 11:01Speaker 1: we come back. After this, for ANCO Insurance.
- 11:05Speaker 13: Anco Insurance is now a part of Hub International, bringing
- 11:09Speaker 13: you more choices, better value, and even greater expertise. While
- 11:12Speaker 13: our name has changed, we're still the same local team

- 11:27Speaker 13: behind us, more resources, more solutions, still your team. Anco Insurance,

- 11:55Speaker 14: Carney's Pub voted the best pub and best patio in
- 11:58Speaker 14: the Brazos Valley. A & M Alabama Saturday starts 10.30 a.m.
- 12:03Speaker 14: here on The Zone, 11.50 a.m.
- 12:04Speaker 12: And 93.7 FM.
- 12:27Speaker 6: Way across town the phone rings off the wall. If
- 12:31Speaker 6: you know he ain't home, why.
- 12:34Speaker 4: Do you keep calling?
- 12:35Speaker 10: You're going to drive yourself.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Crazy and you know that it's true.
- 12:39Speaker 6: He's just making.
- 12:41Speaker 15: You wild and blue.
- 12:44Speaker 4: Wild and blue.
- 12:47Speaker 1: One of the big hits from the now late great
- 12:52Speaker 1: John Anderson, Country Music Hall of Famer. I hope you
- 12:56Speaker 1: saw the Dolly special last night live on ABC. It
- 12:59Speaker 1: was terrifically produced. A great show. We're going to try
- 13:04Speaker 1: to hit a couple of songs from that before the
- 13:07Speaker 1: show is over. Meantime, we're going to play a couple
- 13:10Speaker 1: of my other favorite John Anderson songs. As I mentioned,
- 13:17Speaker 1: LSU-Auburn coming up this weekend among, you know... It's intriguing.
- 13:24Speaker 1: I tell you, there are a lot of teams beaten
- 13:26Speaker 1: up right now, and we're only halfway through. LSU defensively
- 13:33Speaker 1: has lost some really good players. This little segment is
- 13:39Speaker 1: going to open with Lane Kiffin castigating one of the
- 13:44Speaker 1: reporters who apparently took umbrage with LSU's defensive effort. Kiffin
- 13:50Speaker 1: is trying to explain, hey, We have lost not only
- 13:56Speaker 1: three starters, but the three best starters and best leaders
- 14:03Speaker 1: that we have on defense. Here's Lane Kiffin.
- 14:12Speaker 7: Just for the record, I can't really have an infinite situation.
- 14:16Speaker 7: We don't have Whitley, DeSean Spears, and he will play
- 14:19Speaker 7: seven plays in the game. Those are three all-American type players.
- 14:25Speaker 12: And still shut you out.
- 14:26Speaker 16: Hey, Coach, rising to the occasion on the road after
- 14:29Speaker 16: the first two road games the way they went, Jordan-Hare Stadium,
- 14:33Speaker 16: about 90,000, big place. So just those challenges and the
- 14:37Speaker 16: challenge of the team this week.
- 14:39Speaker 12: Yeah, a really electric place. I've been there a lot.
- 14:42Speaker 12: I'm part of the Iron Bowls and kind of magical place.
- 14:48Speaker 7: And so, you know, we're going to have to pray
- 14:50Speaker 7: really well and be ready to play in a really–
- 14:53Speaker 7: loud environment that they play really well at.
- 14:58Speaker 12: It's always about preparation and preparing.
- 15:01Speaker 7: Really well, practicing really well, and then when you go
- 15:03Speaker 7: in there, making less mistakes than that.
- 15:05Speaker 12: A lot of times on the.
- 15:06Speaker 7: Road, as you break down your losses and close losses,
- 15:10Speaker 7: they're usually not as much how many plays they make.
- 15:13Speaker 7: It's more the mistakes you make and more penalties, more
- 15:16Speaker 7: false starts, and more turnovers than when you play at home.
- 15:23Speaker 17: Lane, Sam said after the game Saturday that he felt
- 15:25Speaker 17: like they were progressing in the offense, getting the offense,
- 15:29Speaker 17: and more room to grow. What is your perspective on it?
- 15:33Speaker 17: I mean, obviously you never want to be totally satisfied,
- 15:35Speaker 17: but how do you feel? What kind of growth do
- 15:39Speaker 17: you see with the offense?
- 15:43Speaker 7: You know, I said before the season that I felt
- 15:46Speaker 7: like any time that you put together these programs, portal teams,
- 15:49Speaker 7: but especially a portal side of the ball, which our
- 15:51Speaker 7: offense is more than our defense. You know, because there
- 15:55Speaker 7: were some really good returning players on defense that stayed here.
- 15:58Speaker 12: The offense, especially without Tredez, is really.
- 16:02Speaker 7: Almost all portal players, but two linemen, right?
- 16:06Speaker 12: So, I think in that usually, as we've.
- 16:09Speaker 7: Studied over time, you know, that takes a little bit
- 16:13Speaker 7: of time in that we play better middle to late
- 16:15Speaker 7: of the year when we've had that happen with teams. So,
- 16:19Speaker 7: Maybe that's part of it. I'm sure that's part of it.
- 16:21Speaker 7: I'm sure Sam missing all the spring.
- 16:26Speaker 12: That's the difference sometimes.
- 16:27Speaker 7: You've got all those bankrupts of a play and you
- 16:29Speaker 7: get off of a guy a little bit early down
- 16:31Speaker 7: in the red.
- 16:31Speaker 12: Zone and you don't get the touchdown. You settle for
- 16:34Speaker 12: a field goal and stuff.
- 16:35Speaker 7: I think part of that is experience of playing with
- 16:39Speaker 7: each other and experience within the system.
- 16:44Speaker 18: After a wild weekend in the SEC, as a coach,
- 16:47Speaker 18: have you noticed when things like that happen, help to
- 16:51Speaker 18: get your team's attention? Is that something that you will
- 16:54Speaker 18: talk to them about? How do you view that, and
- 16:56Speaker 18: is it a benefit for you in any way?
- 17:01Speaker 12: I mean, I think they see it. You're playing a
- 17:04Speaker 12: team that just beat the number one team in the country.
- 17:07Speaker 7: And really the adding of the ninth game really replaces
- 17:12Speaker 7: what were probably usually 16 wins. And so you get,
- 17:17Speaker 7: you take away, they didn't replace the power four game.
- 17:19Speaker 7: You know, they replaced the group of six game. So
- 17:22Speaker 7: you would add another one of those early as you're
- 17:23Speaker 7: still trying to figure out your team. And they kind
- 17:26Speaker 7: of said when it was proposed, I said, okay, well
- 17:30Speaker 7: you're going to take on eight more losses. I mean,
- 17:32Speaker 7: that's going to be real. There's no way of changing
- 17:34Speaker 7: the math that's going to happen. And, um, so you
- 17:37Speaker 7: see that, I think somebody said there's two sec teams
- 17:40Speaker 7: in the.
- 17:41Speaker 12: Top 10 right now.
- 17:42Speaker 7: Um, Before it started, I said, take away the first
- 17:47Speaker 7: SEC game that you play because that's going to be
- 17:48Speaker 7: brand new.
- 17:49Speaker 12: The ninth one came.
- 17:50Speaker 7: Early and got added and replaced an early win. Where's
- 17:54Speaker 7: that going to put you?
- 17:57Speaker 12: Look at this team. If you took away their first
- 18:00Speaker 12: SEC loss.
- 18:01Speaker 7: And it was just a win versus a group of
- 18:04Speaker 7: six teams, they'd be a top.
- 18:06Speaker 12: Ten team right now.
- 18:07Speaker 7: They'd have one loss on the road at Tennessee to
- 18:09Speaker 7: a really good team. Somehow now, because of adding an
- 18:13Speaker 7: extra game, they're not even ranked. You know, they just
- 18:16Speaker 7: beat the number one team in the country. So it's
- 18:19Speaker 7: just where football is, and they can't see like they
- 18:22Speaker 7: do in basketball or baseball metrics.
- 18:26Speaker 12: So that's what it.
- 18:29Speaker 11: Is.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Does it open your window a little bit more, though?
- 18:32Speaker 18: I mean, is there a plus to it at all?
- 18:34Speaker 12: No. It's not.
- 18:37Speaker 7: You're in– just see teams with more– more losses and
- 18:41Speaker 7: more beat up. And there's so much into it more
- 18:42Speaker 7: than just the losses. You know, it's at a time
- 18:45Speaker 7: when because of it, I'm not complaining, I'm saying what
- 18:48Speaker 7: it is, because of portal that you can leave every
- 18:50Speaker 7: year in NIL, you see players going from teams for
- 18:53Speaker 7: more money and they go to another team in conference.
- 18:56Speaker 12: And that's fine. That is what it is. But at
- 18:58Speaker 12: the same time.
- 18:59Speaker 7: That you see that where it's so hard for teams
- 19:00Speaker 7: to build depth after their top players, don't add more
- 19:04Speaker 7: conference games, you know, Because now you've got what you've got.
- 19:08Speaker 7: And then you want to talk about not letting portal
- 19:12Speaker 7: players in in the conference also and limiting that.
- 19:15Speaker 12: We'll have no top 10 teams.
- 19:20Speaker 19: Coach, what makes winning on the road in the SEC
- 19:22Speaker 19: tougher than, say, the Big 10, the old Pac-12, some
- 19:27Speaker 19: of these other conferences?
- 19:28Speaker 12: What makes it a more unique challenge? Well, I just
- 19:31Speaker 12: think first off, it's a deeper conference.
- 19:35Speaker 7: And again, I've said this before, it's no You can
- 19:37Speaker 7: win because your number one seed is better like the
- 19:40Speaker 7: last couple years, which is true.
- 19:41Speaker 12: And credit to Big Ten.
- 19:43Speaker 7: That doesn't mean that your conference is deeper because you
- 19:45Speaker 7: win the national championship.
- 19:47Speaker 12: So our middle to bottom.
- 19:49Speaker 7: whoever you declare those teams, those are still really hard
- 19:52Speaker 7: places to play. I mean, what you just said, we
- 19:57Speaker 7: haven't won on the road at LSU in 24 months,
- 20:01Speaker 7: but yet there's one other non-conference road game, Zach Clemson,
- 20:05Speaker 7: and LSU won.
- 20:06Speaker 12: So, I mean, it's real in the conference.
- 20:11Speaker 20: Coach, is there any updates on trade as in weight
- 20:13Speaker 20: and their injury status?
- 20:14Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, if we have something, it'll be Wednesday.
- 20:23Speaker 19: It'll be a big talking point all week about a
- 20:26Speaker 19: letdown spot for Auburn after winning on the road. I'm
- 20:28Speaker 19: curious in your experience, NFL or college, is that something
- 20:31Speaker 19: that we all talk about or is that a real
- 20:33Speaker 19: thing internally at either level where you protect against a
- 20:38Speaker 19: letdown after a big win?
- 20:40Speaker 12: No, that's a, that's a real thing.
- 20:41Speaker 7: Relief syndrome is, is real and doesn't mean we're going
- 20:44Speaker 7: to win this week and they're going to lose, but that.
- 20:47Speaker 12: Is a real thing. That's a real challenge.
- 20:49Speaker 7: Um, and especially now I say, I say all the time,
- 20:53Speaker 7: I think it's a harder challenge now because of all
- 20:55Speaker 7: the access on their phones of, of people and media
- 20:58Speaker 7: and all the stuff they see in social media. So,
- 21:02Speaker 7: you know, start to be told how great you are.
- 21:04Speaker 7: You know, when you have those ones, I was rooting
- 21:06Speaker 7: for them at the end of the game to win,
- 21:07Speaker 7: you know, when we were playing the next week. Um,
- 21:10Speaker 7: just because that just makes it more challenging.
- 21:15Speaker 21: Coach, a couple stats and a couple questions for you.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Okay.
- 21:18Speaker 21: In a minute for me. 323 days on the job.
- 21:24Speaker 21: From a football standpoint, what's been the toughest job for
- 21:27Speaker 21: you and your staff to rebuild this LSU football program?
- 21:33Speaker 22: Hmm.
- 21:36Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 21:37Speaker 12: I don't probably have a really good answer to that.
- 21:38Speaker 12: There's so much in.
- 21:40Speaker 7: When you come in, it's always been that way. But nowadays,
- 21:43Speaker 7: because of poor, you just got to, you know, it's like.
- 21:46Speaker 12: Turn around a train. And that's got nothing to do
- 21:48Speaker 12: with how it was done before. It just is.
- 21:50Speaker 7: Because not just you come in and change so much,
- 21:52Speaker 7: then you got to change the roster so much. And
- 21:54Speaker 7: so that does make it easier in some ways than
- 21:57Speaker 7: it used to be. But I think probably the challenge,
- 22:03Speaker 7: really the unexpected challenge, was the injuries.
- 22:04Speaker 12: And I'm not complaining.
- 22:06Speaker 7: I understand injuries happen, but the significance of ours with dynamic,
- 22:11Speaker 7: all-American type of players that were playing that way and
- 22:14Speaker 7: the leadership skills, and you have two sevens not playing.
- 22:18Speaker 12: In an era where we were built top-heavy.
- 22:22Speaker 7: I just think that was the best way to win,
- 22:25Speaker 7: was to do that. You did have these marquee, really
- 22:28Speaker 7: good players. We built a team to be able to
- 22:31Speaker 7: play against anybody and Those were really challenging injuries, and
- 22:39Speaker 7: not just because of the players that are behind them,
- 22:40Speaker 7: but because of who they are from a leadership standpoint
- 22:44Speaker 7: in your first year together.
- 22:47Speaker 21: Second to that, Coach, 10 for 12, one-fourth down. Do
- 22:52Speaker 21: you think you're coaching with the same mindset, aggressiveness, confidence,
- 22:55Speaker 21: and swag at LSU as you were at Ole Miss
- 22:59Speaker 21: the last three years?
- 23:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:04Speaker 12: I don't know that that's swag. I think that's just–
- 23:08Speaker 12: I know what it is.
- 23:09Speaker 7: I'm looking at the whole team, you know, and we've
- 23:12Speaker 7: played really good defense most of the year in critical situations,
- 23:16Speaker 7: and that goes into that. And there's been time over
- 23:18Speaker 7: those years that we weren't as good on defense, you know,
- 23:21Speaker 7: at Ole Miss. So we were more aggressive. That's not
- 23:24Speaker 7: anything to do with our offensive players. That's, you know–
- 23:30Speaker 7: Like I told the players, I was like, okay, you
- 23:32Speaker 7: can't just go for it every fourth down because you
- 23:33Speaker 7: believe in your players. And the first fourth and ten
- 23:36Speaker 7: of the game, you're just going to go because you've
- 23:38Speaker 7: got swag. I mean, you've got to make– they pay
- 23:41Speaker 7: you a lot of money to make really educated decisions
- 23:44Speaker 7: in hard situations. So I'm always looking at that and
- 23:48Speaker 7: looking at exactly who our team is on that day
- 23:50Speaker 7: and how things are going and freaking wind and everything
- 23:53Speaker 7: that's going on. So that's why maybe at times– It
- 23:56Speaker 7: hasn't seemed as aggressive because I've been playing to a
- 23:59Speaker 7: really good defense in that situation.
- 24:02Speaker 1: That's Lane Kiffin, and he took on some interesting topics,
- 24:05Speaker 1: some that we've been talking about a little bit. He
- 24:09Speaker 1: talked about the depth of the league, the difficulty of
- 24:12Speaker 1: winning on the road, the difficulty of getting ready to
- 24:17Speaker 1: play after a huge win. I thought it was interesting
- 24:23Speaker 1: with the depth. He said, look, we built the roster...
- 24:27Speaker 1: Top heavy, as he called it. In other words, they
- 24:30Speaker 1: spent a lot of money on some really key players.
- 24:37Speaker 1: When those players get injured, there's not depth behind them.
- 24:44Speaker 1: During Nick's run at Alabama before NIL, I would argue
- 24:53Speaker 1: that some players of his second team offenses and defenses
- 24:59Speaker 1: may have been among the top five teams in the country.
- 25:04Speaker 10: Right?
- 25:05Speaker 1: They were winning national championships and their second team probably
- 25:10Speaker 1: could have contended for a national championship. That's how much
- 25:13Speaker 1: depth they had. Nobody's got that anymore. Nobody. Because of
- 25:21Speaker 1: the money being spent to get these top And you
- 25:29Speaker 1: can take any team you want and look at that.
- 25:33Speaker 1: And when you make bad decisions, you're going to lose.
- 25:39Speaker 1: And I think we've seen some of that here. I
- 25:43Speaker 1: know we've seen some of it in other places. The
- 25:47Speaker 1: players didn't turn out to be who they thought they were.
- 25:51Speaker 1: And you're stuck because you don't have anybody behind them
- 25:54Speaker 1: that's better You're paying these guys a lot of money
- 25:58Speaker 1: to win and to perform, and if it doesn't happen,
- 26:02Speaker 1: you're not digging around on the bench to find somebody
- 26:04Speaker 1: that's equal because they're not there. I thought it was interesting.
- 26:12Speaker 1: He said we're missing two sevens. In case you don't know,
- 26:15Speaker 1: the number seven is like at LSU is a little
- 26:19Speaker 1: like the number 12 here, right? It's for special players, okay?
- 26:24Speaker 1: They get to wear the number seven. I think that
- 26:26Speaker 1: was Burt Jones' number at LSU. We got one out
- 26:31Speaker 1: on offense and one out on defense, I believe. And
- 26:36Speaker 1: then he talked about, he was asked, well, you don't
- 26:40Speaker 1: have as much swag as you used to. You're not
- 26:42Speaker 1: going for it as much on fourth down as you
- 26:45Speaker 1: did when you were at Ole Miss. And I like
- 26:47Speaker 1: the answer. He goes, hey. It depends on the situation.
- 26:52Speaker 1: It depends on the defense. It depends on, you know,
- 26:57Speaker 1: you don't line up and go for fourth and ten
- 26:59Speaker 1: in the first quarter. I mean, I think I've seen
- 27:02Speaker 1: him do it before. I saw Coach Leach do it.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I saw the BYU coach call a fake punt from
- 27:09Speaker 1: his own 25-yard line. That was the height of stupidity.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Have I mentioned that this week, by the way? I
- 27:15Speaker 1: think I have. I still don't know what he was thinking.
- 27:21Speaker 1: But he did say, look, we're paid a lot of
- 27:23Speaker 1: money to make these decisions. And they are. He said,
- 27:30Speaker 1: sometimes analytics comes into it. Sometimes you got to coach
- 27:35Speaker 1: by the gut and not analytics. By the way, to
- 27:38Speaker 1: all these coaches out here listening to me today, quit
- 27:40Speaker 1: going for two. I'm just telling you right now, quit
- 27:46Speaker 1: chasing points and going for two. First quarter, second quarter,
- 27:51Speaker 1: Third quarter. There's times and places you have to. If
- 27:56Speaker 1: you don't have to, quit doing it. Because it's stupid.
- 28:01Speaker 1: That is proven analytics, by the way. You know, they
- 28:05Speaker 1: all have a chart going, well, if you're behind by
- 28:09Speaker 1: this much, you go for two. I don't know where
- 28:11Speaker 1: those charts came from. I don't know who made those charts.
- 28:14Speaker 1: They're wrong.
- 28:16Speaker 12: Okay?
- 28:19Speaker 1: If you're down.
- 28:22Speaker 1: Let's say if you're ahead by one in the first
- 28:28Speaker 1: quarter or the second quarter or even the third quarter,
- 28:34Speaker 1: kick the freaking extra point. Because analytics will tell you
- 28:41Speaker 1: you start chasing points, you're going to lose. Look, for
- 28:48Speaker 1: all you administrators out there, I will. I will talk
- 28:52Speaker 1: to your coaching staff, and I will be a consultant
- 28:56Speaker 1: for half of what you're paying your head coaches right now.
- 29:00Speaker 1: I will come in and make them better coaches immediately.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'll tell you what I'll do. I know there's rules
- 29:09Speaker 1: probably against this, so I can't stand on the sideline.
- 29:13Speaker 1: But I would. And tell the coach, hey, You're under
- 29:19Speaker 1: a lot of stress and pressure right now. This is
- 29:22Speaker 1: a stupid decision you're making. Kind of like the fake
- 29:26Speaker 1: punt at Brigham Young last Saturday night. Somebody needed to
- 29:30Speaker 1: tell him, Coach, we're ahead in this game. And it's
- 29:36Speaker 1: the fourth quarter. You probably ought to punt the ball.
- 29:39Speaker 1: And you're on your own 20%. 25-yard line. I would
- 29:42Speaker 1: punt the ball, Coach. So, these are the kinds of
- 29:48Speaker 1: decisions I'll help you make. Because some people out there
- 29:55Speaker 1: aren't very good.
- 29:55Speaker 11: At it, apparently.
- 29:56Speaker 1: All right, coming up. We've got a high school report.
- 30:00Speaker 1: We're going to hear from Des Ricks. We have our

- 30:35Speaker 1: It seems to me.

- 33:13Speaker 24: Welcome into the High School Report. I'm Caleb Rapley, and
- 33:16Speaker 24: today we are jumping out to the Polaris Fun Center
- 33:19Speaker 24: phone line to visit with the head coach. of the
- 33:22Speaker 24: Belton Tigers football team, Mr.
- 33:24Speaker 12: Josh Mann.
- 33:25Speaker 24: Coach, thanks for joining me today.
- 33:27Speaker 16: Yeah, thank you.
- 33:27Speaker 11: I appreciate y'all having me on. Yes, sir.
- 33:31Speaker 24: Well, we are in the thick of District 8, 5A
- 33:35Speaker 24: Division II football schedule here now. You've got a couple
- 33:38Speaker 24: district games under your belt, and your Tigers have had
- 33:41Speaker 24: a very solid season, sitting at 5-2 overall and 2-0
- 33:45Speaker 24: in district play. So what have been some of the
- 33:47Speaker 24: keys to success for you your belting team so far
- 33:51Speaker 24: this year?
- 33:52Speaker 11: Well, I think a lot of it leads on our
- 33:53Speaker 11: senior leadership. These young men that are seniors right now
- 33:56Speaker 11: put a lot of time in the last couple of
- 33:58Speaker 11: years prior to me getting here, but they have a
- 34:01Speaker 11: lot of varsity experience on the field and growing together,
- 34:04Speaker 11: and it was just a real focus group, and they
- 34:07Speaker 11: made this transition coming into this late spring, early summer,
- 34:11Speaker 11: to be able to be where we're sitting right now, 5-2,
- 34:13Speaker 11: and like you said, 2-0 in district, give a lot
- 34:16Speaker 11: of credit to them and the coaching staff, that couple
- 34:19Speaker 11: guys that we were able to bring in with new coordinators,
- 34:21Speaker 11: but also the staff that stayed all unifying under one
- 34:24Speaker 11: belief and system, and it's been really a fun transition.
- 34:28Speaker 24: Yeah, so it is a very experienced team, brought back almost,
- 34:32Speaker 24: I think a little over half of the starters from
- 34:34Speaker 24: last season's team, which I know in the first year
- 34:37Speaker 24: of a new head coach, that doesn't always make as
- 34:41Speaker 24: much of an impact as it does when it's the
- 34:43Speaker 24: same administration. But I'm sure that's been a big advantage
- 34:46Speaker 24: for you. Who are some of the players that have
- 34:47Speaker 24: stood out as far as younger players that that are
- 34:52Speaker 24: getting an opportunity this season?
- 34:54Speaker 11: Yeah, some of our younger guys that have really jumped out,
- 34:56Speaker 11: you know, on the defensive side, that they had some
- 34:58Speaker 11: starting experience. But, you know, Oakley Torres, who's returning as
- 35:01Speaker 11: a junior, has really, you know, set the court for
- 35:03Speaker 11: our linebackers. Outside linebacker Alex Carpenter had a pretty good early,
- 35:08Speaker 11: you know, as a sophomore, played well and, you know,
- 35:10Speaker 11: came in. He's really... Helped us, but then you look
- 35:13Speaker 11: up front, a guy named Kanan Smith, who was on
- 35:17Speaker 11: the JV last year as a defensive lineman, now leading
- 35:19Speaker 11: us in pressures and sacks, and he's really helped anchor
- 35:22Speaker 11: down that defensive line group, so I've been real proud
- 35:24Speaker 11: of them. And then our corner play between Anthony Anderson, Zion,
- 35:29Speaker 11: And Anthony Garcia really helped step up with the law
- 35:33Speaker 11: of our senior leadership that has been there on that
- 35:35Speaker 11: defensive side. You know, offensively, we've got some real big
- 35:39Speaker 11: sophomores jump in at running back through some injuries. Brody
- 35:41Speaker 11: Lee's really carried some weight the last couple weeks as
- 35:44Speaker 11: we're getting a couple running backs back in our system.
- 35:48Speaker 11: And then, you know, some of our sophomore receivers have
- 35:51Speaker 11: stepped up in different ways to make this program start
- 35:54Speaker 11: really kind of clicking in the direction we want it to.
- 35:56Speaker 24: So before you came to Belton, you were at Leander
- 36:00Speaker 24: Rouse High School for many years. So, you know, what
- 36:04Speaker 24: are some things that you learned in that job that
- 36:06Speaker 24: you've been able to carry over to being the head
- 36:09Speaker 24: coach here for the Tigers?
- 36:10Speaker 11: Well, it was a unique experience. And, you know, I
- 36:13Speaker 11: got to open that campus in 2008 and, you know,
- 36:16Speaker 11: grew it, you know, where you don't have any seniors
- 36:18Speaker 11: to develop into the program. We made some nice runs,
- 36:21Speaker 11: but we also at times, you know, with the growth
- 36:23Speaker 11: of that Leander Austin area, you You don't have other
- 36:27Speaker 11: schools opening in around us. And so it went from
- 36:29Speaker 11: so many different phases that while I was there, too.
- 36:33Speaker 11: And all through those phases, you learn different things. You're
- 36:35Speaker 11: the they're the biggest school in the division. Then you
- 36:38Speaker 11: drop to the smallest and then you've got to reshape
- 36:40Speaker 11: because you lost this percentage of kids in this part
- 36:43Speaker 11: of the neighborhood. Now you've got a different group of
- 36:45Speaker 11: clientele coming in. And so just all those, even though
- 36:48Speaker 11: it was one stay for 18 years in one spot,
- 36:50Speaker 11: I feel like it went through three different transformations, three
- 36:52Speaker 11: different schools during that time. And each time we had
- 36:55Speaker 11: to reset and do it. So kind of coming in
- 36:57Speaker 11: here and looking at that, it was, I think some
- 36:59Speaker 11: advantages up in there, but just also being able to
- 37:02Speaker 11: have the ability to stay in one place and learn
- 37:04Speaker 11: from your mistakes. There were some years that we did
- 37:06Speaker 11: not do as well as we'd hope. And then we
- 37:07Speaker 11: had some great runs. And so just taking those experiences and,
- 37:11Speaker 11: But coaching kids is coaching kids. It's about developing relationships
- 37:14Speaker 11: and trusting them and putting them in positions where they
- 37:16Speaker 11: can have fun but also play competitively and get after people.
- 37:20Speaker 24: So District 8 is a little bit of a smaller
- 37:22Speaker 24: district relative to how many of the other ones are structured,
- 37:26Speaker 24: only six teams. So that means that exactly half of
- 37:31Speaker 24: your games in the regular season are non-district and the
- 37:34Speaker 24: other half are district. So I've heard it both ways
- 37:37Speaker 24: from coaches in District 8. um, about whether that's an
- 37:41Speaker 24: advantage or a disadvantage. So do you like having, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 24: five games to warm up for district play, or would
- 37:46Speaker 24: you rather be getting into it earlier in the season?
- 37:50Speaker 11: I would rather just honestly have four, I think five,
- 37:53Speaker 11: or just, you, you just, after four games, you kind
- 37:56Speaker 11: of get a chance to really trust your identity, play
- 37:58Speaker 11: some different type of opponents and get yourself ready for
- 38:00Speaker 11: district at five. You, you know, you're kind of ready
- 38:02Speaker 11: to start that next phase to me and go into
- 38:05Speaker 11: district play. And, you know, injuries are going to happen
- 38:09Speaker 11: regardless of what time you play. It doesn't matter if
- 38:10Speaker 11: you get hurt week one in district or week five
- 38:13Speaker 11: and in a non-district game, but you hope to, you know,
- 38:16Speaker 11: just as another risk that you're playing a game that
- 38:18Speaker 11: means only to my record, but not to improving us
- 38:21Speaker 11: for chances from playoffs. And so I would like to,
- 38:24Speaker 11: I'd always like to have at least four non three
- 38:27Speaker 11: non-district game. I think it's the minimum. I don't like
- 38:29Speaker 11: it where you get just two non-district games, but four
- 38:32Speaker 11: to me is the ideal number six district games forward.
- 38:35Speaker 11: And you were able to roll from there.
- 38:37Speaker 24: So having, you know, all of that time to learn
- 38:41Speaker 24: your team before district play, what would you say are
- 38:45Speaker 24: some of the biggest strengths of this Tiger team and
- 38:48Speaker 24: then maybe one of the biggest weaknesses as well?
- 38:52Speaker 11: I mean, strength-wise, we found out that we can be
- 38:55Speaker 11: very explosive both on the defense and offensive side. I mean,
- 38:58Speaker 11: we've created a ton of turnovers this year. We've scored
- 39:01Speaker 11: explosive points. We're still learning, though, on both sides to
- 39:04Speaker 11: be consistent and consistent throughout. We sometimes get, you know,
- 39:09Speaker 11: with the new systems in place and sometimes not having
- 39:12Speaker 11: that comfortability of understanding what's, you know, kind of the
- 39:15Speaker 11: flow and game that we sometimes, you know, maybe put
- 39:19Speaker 11: too much pressure or stress in some situations where we
- 39:21Speaker 11: just relax and trust what's going to happen next. But
- 39:25Speaker 11: I think we're learning that. And last week was a
- 39:27Speaker 11: great test for us in that. We kind of were
- 39:29Speaker 11: down at half an inch. had a great second half.
- 39:31Speaker 11: And we're starting to put those things together. And it's
- 39:34Speaker 11: just starting to slowly gel. And it's just been fun.
- 39:37Speaker 11: I mean, in the non-district, we played some really good
- 39:39Speaker 11: 6As and some tough 5AD1 teams to get ourselves ready
- 39:42Speaker 11: for this opportunity. But This back half of the district
- 39:45Speaker 11: with Ellison, Waco, you and Brenham is going to be
- 39:48Speaker 11: a true challenge to see where we're going to finish
- 39:50Speaker 11: this thing out.
- 39:51Speaker 24: Yeah, so as you mentioned, some of those teams that
- 39:54Speaker 24: you are currently tied for first place in District 8
- 39:57Speaker 24: with the Brenham Cubs and the Ellison Eagles and your
- 40:02Speaker 24: Belton Tigers are all sitting at 2-0 currently. I know
- 40:05Speaker 24: that doesn't lock up a playoff spot, but you're in
- 40:07Speaker 24: a really good position for that right now. So what
- 40:11Speaker 24: are going to be the keys to carrying that momentum
- 40:15Speaker 24: from a hot start in district play through these final
- 40:18Speaker 24: three games of the season that could be the three
- 40:21Speaker 24: toughest games that you play all year?
- 40:24Speaker 11: Oh, no doubt. You've got to take it week by
- 40:28Speaker 11: week when you get into these scenarios and try not
- 40:30Speaker 11: to look too far ahead. We have to, as coaches,
- 40:33Speaker 11: when you start looking at the possibility of tiebreakers and
- 40:35Speaker 11: points and how those things call, sometimes you may need
- 40:38Speaker 11: to go for an extra point that you've Maybe it
- 40:41Speaker 11: would have just kicked. You may go for two just
- 40:42Speaker 11: to extend that point lead and avoid try-breakers. But really,
- 40:46Speaker 11: it just starts this week with us focusing on Ellison,
- 40:48Speaker 11: taking it, you know, the coach's cliche, one game at
- 40:51Speaker 11: a time, one play at a time. You have to
- 40:54Speaker 11: stay humble on that. And what I remind our guys is, like,
- 40:57Speaker 11: You only get 10 guaranteed games, and if we're blessed,
- 41:00Speaker 11: we'll get 11th, and we just need to focus on
- 41:01Speaker 11: 11th if we get there. But don't waste this Monday.
- 41:05Speaker 11: Don't waste this Tuesday because you're going to blink, and
- 41:08Speaker 11: we're like seniors right now. For us, you only have
- 41:10Speaker 11: two Monday guaranteed practices left. So don't waste an opportunity
- 41:14Speaker 11: thinking about down the road. Let's focus on this day.
- 41:17Speaker 11: Let's focus on this week. And you keep it in perspective.
- 41:20Speaker 11: That way you're able to kind of eat this elephant
- 41:24Speaker 11: in small bites, not one whole big swallow.
- 41:27Speaker 24: So specifically on the Ellison Eagles, that's your matchup this
- 41:31Speaker 24: Friday night at home in Belton. They are four and
- 41:35Speaker 24: three on the season, had a little bit of a
- 41:36Speaker 24: tough start in non-district play, but have rebounded quite nicely,
- 41:40Speaker 24: undefeated in district play, like I mentioned earlier. So what
- 41:43Speaker 24: do you expect to see from the Eagles tomorrow night?
- 41:46Speaker 11: And you know, their, their identity starts with their quarterback
- 41:49Speaker 11: on offense. He's a, he's an impressive young man. That's
- 41:51Speaker 11: very physical. He can create offense on his own. And
- 41:55Speaker 11: when he kind of gets out of the pocket and, and,
- 41:58Speaker 11: and scrambles, he's one of the most accurate throwers I've seen.
- 42:01Speaker 11: you know, on the move, especially if you don't get
- 42:03Speaker 11: much pressure on him and he can kind of just scramble,
- 42:05Speaker 11: keep his eyes up. His receivers do an exceptional job
- 42:08Speaker 11: of coming back to him and getting open. And so that's,
- 42:10Speaker 11: that's a tremendous challenge along with, you know, they're, they're
- 42:12Speaker 11: pretty big up front. They, like you said, they've struggled
- 42:15Speaker 11: up early. Well, they, they were also rotating guys and
- 42:18Speaker 11: banged up. So they're starting to get their guys back
- 42:20Speaker 11: in place. And, I think everybody picked them to be
- 42:23Speaker 11: at the top of this district for a reason because
- 42:24Speaker 11: of their athleticism size there. And, you know, defensively, they're
- 42:27Speaker 11: going to they're going to line right. They're going to
- 42:28Speaker 11: come off the ball. They're going to play very physical,
- 42:30Speaker 11: aggressive in the box. And they've got the athleticism behind
- 42:33Speaker 11: it to match. So, you know, it's one of those
- 42:35Speaker 11: games in this situation that you've got to hopefully, you know,
- 42:38Speaker 11: make them earn it.
- 42:39Speaker 15: Don't give them.
- 42:40Speaker 11: Anything free from the defensive side and offensive. We've got
- 42:42Speaker 11: to capitalize when we get into the red zone. We've
- 42:44Speaker 11: got to come away with points.
- 42:46Speaker 4: All right, coach.
- 42:46Speaker 24: I appreciate your time today. Good luck to your Tigers
- 42:49Speaker 24: the rest.
- 42:49Speaker 11: Of the season. Thank you. I appreciate it. Go Tigers.

- 44:14Speaker 1: All right, that's our high school report. Caleb is here
- 44:17Speaker 1: Tuesdays and Thursdays, keeping you updated throughout the Brazos Valley.
- 44:24Speaker 1: I heard that again last night on a local TV station.
- 44:28Speaker 1: I don't know how you allow that. Brazos Valley immediately
- 44:31Speaker 1: tells you they're not from here, but they haven't really
- 44:34Speaker 1: educated themselves about being here either. Sorry, it's just a
- 44:39Speaker 1: little pet peeve I have. Okay, coming up, we're going
- 44:47Speaker 1: to hear from Des Ricks. They will have their hands
- 44:51Speaker 1: full against the Alabama quarterback, Keelan Russell, on Saturday afternoon, 2.30.
- 44:58Speaker 1: Our coverage starts at 10.30 Saturday morning here on The Zone.
- 45:04Speaker 1: The Texans report, presented by Oscar & Sons and Citizen
- 45:08Speaker 1: State Bank.
- 45:11Speaker 23: Even a so-called minor car wreck could turn your life
- 45:13Speaker 23: upside down, but Oster & Sons Body Shop has been
- 45:16Speaker 23: providing customers state-of-the-art vehicle paint and body repair for generations
- 45:19Speaker 23: of motorists all over the Brazos Valley. Patrick and Tracy
- 45:22Speaker 23: Chappell continue to carry on the family tradition, and Oster
- 45:25Speaker 23: & Sons was the first shop in the area to

- 45:31Speaker 23: exact color. When accidents happen, call Oster & Sons at
- 45:34Speaker 23: 979-778-6836 or online at OsterAndSons.com.
- 45:41Speaker 20: The Houston Texans are getting set to face the New
- 45:43Speaker 20: York Giants offense, which is now a threat via multiple
- 45:46Speaker 20: quarterbacks with J.J. McCarthy and James Winston. Giants head coach
- 45:50Speaker 20: John Harbaugh made the decision to bench Winston, who took
- 45:52Speaker 20: over when starter Jackson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury.
- 45:56Speaker 20: McCarthy led three scoring drives when he entered the Saints
- 45:58Speaker 20: game a week ago. The Texans defense remains confident that
- 46:01Speaker 20: no matter who throws the ball, they'll be in control.
- 46:03Speaker 20: Here's Will Anderson Jr. on the Giants offense.
- 46:06Speaker 4: Yeah, young quarterback.
- 46:07Speaker 22: I think both of the guys we really watch tape on,
- 46:09Speaker 22: both of those guys can really move really well. I mean,
- 46:11Speaker 22: they get out the pocket, they make guys miss, they
- 46:13Speaker 22: make the first person miss. You win a one-on-one, you
- 46:15Speaker 22: try to get Jameis down, and Jameis is back there
- 46:17Speaker 22: moving around, trying to get J.J.
- 46:18Speaker 15: Down.
- 46:18Speaker 22: So I think they're both very good athletes. You look
- 46:21Speaker 22: at J.J., I think he has the ability to open
- 46:23Speaker 22: up a lot of more stuff. They want to do
- 46:24Speaker 22: zone read, all those type of different things, escape the pocket.
- 46:27Speaker 22: It's going to be a good matchup for us, I think,
- 46:28Speaker 22: more than ever. We have to rush together. He's a
- 46:30Speaker 22: young quarterback. So we have to do a really good
- 46:32Speaker 22: job of making sure everybody is owning their box.
- 46:34Speaker 20: Kickoff between the Texans and Giants is set for noon
- 46:36Speaker 20: Sunday from Houston. With your Houston Texans report, I'm Jett Nelson.

- 48:15Speaker 1: When I get where I'm going.
- 48:19Speaker 5: On the far side of the sky.
- 48:23Speaker 1: The first thing that I'm gonna do.
- 48:26Speaker 5: Is spread my wings and fly I'm gonna land beside
- 48:32Speaker 5: a lion And run my fingers through his mane It's
- 48:38Speaker 5: Brad Paisley. Or I might find out what it's like
- 48:42Speaker 5: With Dolly Parton.
- 48:51Speaker 1: They sang that song in honor of Dolly last night
- 48:53Speaker 1: on ABC. Terrific show. Hope you saw it. If you didn't,
- 48:57Speaker 1: I think it's streaming. It's worth watching.
- 49:00Speaker 10: All right.
- 49:01Speaker 1: We're going to hear from Des Rex. He is going
- 49:03Speaker 1: back to Tuscaloosa after three years. Should be interesting. Here
- 49:08Speaker 1: he is earlier this week.
- 49:11Speaker 4: I'm excited.
- 49:11Speaker 27: It's been a while since I've been back. Just excited
- 49:15Speaker 27: to go play, honestly.
- 49:19Speaker 10: Devs and Eagles.
- 49:20Speaker 4: You look at the numbers, you know you've had a
- 49:22Speaker 4: pretty successful season.
- 49:23Speaker 12: I'm just curious, LSU it.
- 49:25Speaker 10: Seemed like was able to maybe get.
- 49:27Speaker 4: The best of you.
- 49:28Speaker 24: Why was that the case, and why have you been
- 49:30Speaker 24: able to get your game back to where it was?
- 49:32Speaker 27: Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't really say they got the
- 49:35Speaker 27: best of me. Like, Like, people also don't know what
- 49:38Speaker 27: coverages we in. So, like, you know, like, I wouldn't, like,
- 49:43Speaker 27: I don't know. Like, everything that they say was on me,
- 49:46Speaker 27: you know, some stuff is just within coverages and whatnot.
- 49:49Speaker 4: So, I wouldn't say nobody really got much on me
- 49:52Speaker 4: this year.
- 49:53Speaker 27: Yeah, honestly, it's just been trusting my trainer, getting back
- 49:56Speaker 27: to myself, honestly.
- 49:58Speaker 4: That's all, really.
- 49:59Speaker 6: Do you sense that opponents are avoiding throwing you in
- 50:02Speaker 6: your direction?
- 50:03Speaker 4: Yeah, a little bit. Why do you think that is?
- 50:07Speaker 4: I have no clue with that. I don't know. Would
- 50:10Speaker 4: you prefer they throw more? Of course, definitely.
- 50:12Speaker 23: Why do you want to say that?
- 50:13Speaker 4: So I can make some plays on the ball, you know.
- 50:15Speaker 4: But it is what it is. I mean, no targets,
- 50:18Speaker 4: I guess that means I'm doing my job, so.
- 50:20Speaker 10: What did the last game do in terms of confidence?
- 50:23Speaker 10: It's the second shutout of the season. What did it
- 50:26Speaker 10: do to help boost that confidence?
- 50:28Speaker 27: It definitely got an overall morale up. We know what
- 50:31Speaker 27: we're capable of and we're at our best. We're on
- 50:33Speaker 27: the same page. Just using that, regardless of the opponent
- 50:38Speaker 27: we played, going into this next one. And if we're
- 50:40Speaker 27: all on the same page, regardless of who we play,
- 50:42Speaker 27: you know, the same thing can happen.
- 50:45Speaker 9: As you're going back to Alabama, I know there's the
- 50:47Speaker 9: transfer portal there.
- 50:48Speaker 10: There's a lot of guys from a lot of different places.
- 50:50Speaker 9: Does it still get your juices up going to the plate,
- 50:53Speaker 9: your former team, or is that kind of most.
- 50:55Speaker 10: People see that as like, hey, this was a business decision?
- 50:58Speaker 10: It's a kind of business now.
- 51:00Speaker 27: I'm excited about every game, but I'd be lying if
- 51:02Speaker 27: I said I wasn't, you know, like, I wouldn't say
- 51:05Speaker 27: a little more excited, but I guess, you know, a
- 51:08Speaker 27: little more excited than usual. But I'm just going to
- 51:11Speaker 27: go in there and play my game and, you know,
- 51:13Speaker 27: the rest will happen how it should happen.
- 51:15Speaker 10: Do you still have any friends on the team you
- 51:17Speaker 10: guys keep up with?
- 51:17Speaker 4: Yeah, a good amount.
- 51:19Speaker 27: My old roommate, Yonze Pierre, that's one of my closest friends.
- 51:21Speaker 27: I still talk to him on the phone. We probably
- 51:24Speaker 27: won't talk this week, but we'll probably talk after the game.
- 51:26Speaker 9: And then Mike said, or Coach Elko said in the
- 51:28Speaker 9: press conference that, you know, the post games are a
- 51:31Speaker 9: lot different now because so many guys know different guys.
- 51:34Speaker 10: Does it feel like a lot of it's kind.
- 51:36Speaker 9: Of a reunion after the game to get to say
- 51:38Speaker 9: hi to guys that you haven't seen in a while?
- 51:40Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 51:41Speaker 27: Especially with me going to IMG Academy, uh i think
- 51:44Speaker 27: just about every team we know i know at least
- 51:45Speaker 27: five guys on the other side so uh it definitely
- 51:49Speaker 27: you know uh definitely like seeing them it'd be uh
- 51:52Speaker 27: you know it's all uh after the game like talking
- 51:55Speaker 27: to my old teammates you know it's it's.
- 51:57Speaker 5: Cool how frustrating or how hard is it to focus
- 52:00Speaker 5: maybe when the targets aren't coming your way and they
- 52:02Speaker 5: kind of avoided you how do you make an impact
- 52:03Speaker 5: on the.
- 52:04Speaker 27: Game um i think that's making an impact and uh
- 52:07Speaker 27: within itself honestly uh But just not getting bored because
- 52:11Speaker 27: you never know when the ball will come. So just
- 52:13Speaker 27: staying locked into my game, and that's what the coaches
- 52:16Speaker 27: implement towards me. Like, don't fall asleep out there because
- 52:19Speaker 27: as long as you do, that's when the ball will come.
- 52:21Speaker 18: How is the environment in Alabama different than the environment.
- 52:26Speaker 4: Here at A & M? So when I played there,
- 52:29Speaker 4: I was on the other sideline.
- 52:30Speaker 27: So I don't really like– because even when I came here,
- 52:34Speaker 27: so when I played at Alabama and we came here, Like,
- 52:37Speaker 27: it was way louder on the other sideline than what
- 52:40Speaker 27: it is on ours. Like, same as when I was
- 52:42Speaker 27: at Bama, our sideline, like, I don't know. I don't
- 52:44Speaker 27: really think it was as loud as the other one is.
- 52:46Speaker 4: So, I don't know. It's going to be a different feel.
- 52:52Speaker 23: What have you seen from TK maybe in practice that,
- 52:56Speaker 23: you know, he's grown in his game and has been
- 52:58Speaker 23: able to.
- 52:59Speaker 10: Have an impact on this offense?
- 53:00Speaker 27: Yeah, I mean, there's things I've been seeing since TK
- 53:03Speaker 27: got here. He's always somebody that worked hard. And then
- 53:07Speaker 27: now I think just with him getting opportunity from guys
- 53:10Speaker 27: being down, whatever the case may be, he's just.
- 53:13Speaker 4: Showing everyone else. But I'm not surprised by nothing he's doing.
- 53:16Speaker 10: How would you describe him as a receiver today with
- 53:18Speaker 10: the strengths of.
- 53:18Speaker 27: His game on him? I'd say his speed and change
- 53:22Speaker 27: of direction. I think that's definitely strengths of his. Ability
- 53:26Speaker 27: to catch the ball, too. Just a well-rounded receiver, for sure.
- 53:30Speaker 9: You've got several guys on the team who came from
- 53:31Speaker 9: out there with you all. This week, are y'all talking
- 53:34Speaker 9: about any memories from there?
- 53:36Speaker 10: What was it like playing in the state if y'all
- 53:38Speaker 10: won it? Or is it kind of old news, past?
- 53:41Speaker 27: Yeah, we talk about it a little bit. But we
- 53:43Speaker 27: really just keep it the main thing, the main thing.
- 53:46Speaker 27: Just trying to go in there and get a win, honestly.
- 53:48Speaker 18: We're going to talk to Keelan Russell, obviously a really
- 53:51Speaker 18: talented player.
- 53:52Speaker 3: What does he want to do?
- 53:54Speaker 27: Oh, yeah, I think he's a really solid young player.
- 53:56Speaker 27: You know, he can pass the ball really good with
- 53:58Speaker 27: his feet. So he's definitely going to be a challenge
- 54:01Speaker 27: for us. But, like I said, as long as we communicate,
- 54:03Speaker 27: stay on our keys, we'll be up to the challenge
- 54:05Speaker 27: for sure.
- 54:06Speaker 9: You know, to feet by yards, kind of being integrated more,
- 54:08Speaker 9: playing more, how.
- 54:09Speaker 10: Much have you seen his impact in the back end there?
- 54:11Speaker 11: Just what has he brought?
- 54:12Speaker 4: Yeah, he brings a lot of juice. You know, he
- 54:15Speaker 4: brings energy.
- 54:17Speaker 27: He's one of them guys that regardless, in or not,
- 54:20Speaker 27: he's on the sideline, making sure everyone's turned up.
- 54:23Speaker 4: He's a really smart player. He's a thumper as well.
- 54:28Speaker 4: He brings a lot for us, for sure.
- 54:30Speaker 10: Who's your favorite guy to line up against in practice?
- 54:32Speaker 4: Favorite receiver?
- 54:33Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 54:35Speaker 12: That's tough.
- 54:36Speaker 27: I can't say that because that would be doing a
- 54:37Speaker 27: disservice to the other guy.
- 54:38Speaker 4: I like going against everybody.
- 54:40Speaker 9: Had you announced your transfer from Alabama by the time
- 54:43Speaker 9: that Coach Saban.
- 54:44Speaker 4: Announced his retirement? Yeah, I think it was like less
- 54:48Speaker 4: than a week afterwards that I announced that I was transferring.
- 54:52Speaker 12: Were you in the room when he announced it?
- 54:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I was in there, for sure.
- 54:55Speaker 10: What was that moment like? Did you sense that that
- 54:59Speaker 10: was coming?
- 55:00Speaker 27: I mean, nobody really sensed it. The coaches didn't even know.
- 55:03Speaker 27: You could hear a pin drop in there, honestly. It
- 55:05Speaker 27: was just quiet.
- 55:07Speaker 4: After he walked off, the AD came in, talked to us,
- 55:09Speaker 4: and that was that, really.
- 55:10Speaker 10: How do you feel watching that.
- 55:12Speaker 11: All over again?
- 55:13Speaker 1: All right, that's Des Ricks. Interesting take because he was
- 55:19Speaker 1: there when Saban called it quits. He said, hey, I
- 55:22Speaker 1: didn't know. Coaches didn't know. And again, I recommend the
