- 0:05The fair that arrives in the city once a year, is installed in the
- 0:09center at the beginning of August and leaves the last days of November to continue
- 0:13its tour in different areas of the country. The main attractions are the enormous
- 0:20and intimidating mechanical games, roller coasters, wheels of fortune, jellyfish cars,
- 0:26chocolates and a dozen other attractions, not counting the tents of games of skill
- 0:31and some others of sale of objects, souvenirs and food. When I was
- 0:37a kid, this place caught my attention. I enjoyed going with my family
- 0:42to the attractions. I don' t find it as exciting these days as
- 0:47in my childhood. However, I still like to attend with friends or family,
- 0:52but it was precisely as a child that I lived a peculiar experience in
- 0:57one of the attractions of this place, the one that the house or the
- 1:00maze of mirrors. This attraction consists of entering a place of approximately thirty square
- 1:07meters, which was conditioned with wooden sheets to give it the form of labyrinth.
- 1:12But, as its name indicates, each of the wooden walls placed in
- 1:17the place is covered by a mirror, which causes you to easily disorient and
- 1:22confuse when you are inside. A maze is itself complicated to go through Now
- 1:30with the use of mirrors. It is something that few people manage to do,
- 1:34as there is as such no reference that you can take from the walls
- 1:38or the ceiling. Everything is reflective only you see your body in diversity of
- 1:44angles, walking, turning, turning to see yourself. It is an experience
- 1:49that for many people can be extremely desperate, but at that time it was
- 1:56very interesting for me to come in and walk through the averda successfully. I
- 2:00went in alone, because my mother and brothers were not encouraged to enter,
- 2:06arguing the fear and phobia that being there would cause them. I was fully
- 2:09aware that I could get lost there, but I wasn' t afraid.
- 2:14I wanted to live the adventure by myself and go through the maze. In
- 2:20addition, there is no real danger as such, because being at the fair
- 2:23you find yourself in a controlled environment, a place with security guards. Outside
- 2:29the maze are the other attractions, hundreds of people and the security guards and
- 2:34technicians that each attraction contemplates when feeling lost or desperate, you raise your hand
- 2:40and a person from the fair in charge of the game goes for you and
- 2:45takes you towards the exit of the attraction. In my defiant emotion I did
- 2:50not think to ask for help even if I was totally disoriented, because I
- 2:55had the conviction to complete the tour on my own, but they thought that
- 3:00I would fail if in the end I asked for help and I had to
- 3:04be escorted to the end of the game. I entered I started walking the
- 3:07narrow corridors to my left. I saw my reflection the same on my right
- 3:13side. An infinite effect was created by the face of one mirror with another,
- 3:16which made me dizzy, so I did not stop to contemplate carefully the
- 3:21perpetual loop of reflections on reflections in front of me another mirror, which added
- 3:28even more visual confusion. The only reference I could have was the ground,
- 3:34but this one was totally grey and had no stain marks or anything that could
- 3:38be taken as a reference and to know where it had come from and that
- 3:44another was still to be travelled, walking across dead ends and having to return
- 3:51to meet other people from time to time who also sought to leave the place.
- 3:57I spent the next ten or fifteen minutes. Maybe more, I lost
- 4:00track of time when I was surrounded by all the mirrors. The truth of
- 4:04principle didn' t matter to me, but then I began to get tired
- 4:11of the illusion that the walls gave of seeing myself on so many sides,
- 4:15on all surfaces of the place. I walked another time. Maybe ten more
- 4:19minutes. Then I got tired and the courage I presented at the beginning was
- 4:26adulterated by the first signs of despair. Being on site. It cost me
- 4:30work, because I would lose the bet I made on myself, but I
- 4:36seriously thought about giving up and raising my hand and having someone from the local
- 4:40staff go for me and take me to the beginning or maybe the end of
- 4:44the game and as much as I wanted to do it for myself. The
- 4:46despair of being in that narrow sea of reflexes became ever greater, so I
- 4:51decided to surrender, raised my hand and waited for someone to come for me.
- 4:58I thought something wasn' t right, because no one came. I
- 5:01spent several minutes with my bare hand, but it didn' t look like
- 5:05anyone saw me. I also don' t know how they placed the people
- 5:09who wanted to withdraw from the game, because they didn' t see cameras
- 5:15or some sort of surveillance system, which seemed strange to me. I waved
- 5:19my hand waiting to be detected by someone, but nothing was happening and I
- 5:26began to despair, as my desire to get out of there was growing.
- 5:29With the slow passing of the minutes. I didn' t move either because
- 5:33I did stay moving. Most likely, those in charge of extracting people couldn
- 5:38' t find me. Or it was even harder for them, so I
- 5:43stayed in the same position. More time passed and my despair was even greater.
- 5:48I started screaming for help, but still no one was coming for me
- 5:54or there was no sign that they were going to get me out of the
- 5:57place, so, tired and burdened, I felt like waiting on the floor.
- 6:01My despair was turning into concern, for there was no trace of anything
- 6:06or anyone. In all the minutes I was in there crying for help,
- 6:11I never saw people pass as I had before. When I entered the attraction,
- 6:18I got tired and decided to walk, because after all, if no
- 6:21one came after me, I would have to find the way out at one
- 6:26time or another. They couldn' t just leave me in that place.
- 6:30My mother and my brothers would already be wondering what happened to me. Although
- 6:34it probably hadn' t been that long. My despair made me feel the
- 6:40minutes like hours. Walking I came across a fairly long corridor, the longest
- 6:46of those I had traveled at the moment, which I thought would be a
- 6:50good sign, as I was probably approaching an exit or, at least,
- 6:55an area that I had not previously explored, which could get me out of
- 6:59there. But sooner than later I began to notice something strange in the mirror,
- 7:04the one right in front of me at the end of that long corridor,
- 7:09artificially armed and composed of mirrors in their entirety. My reflection did not
- 7:15seem to be really mine, for I stood motionless without making noise or the
- 7:20slightest movement, and my figure in the mirror seemed to be walking it looked
- 7:26like it was coming towards me with a firm and determined step. I was
- 7:30surprised, but I thought it might be something like an optical effect, because
- 7:35it' s not normal to be seeing so many reflexes of yours simultaneously for
- 7:41so long and on one of those occasions you could really play a bad past
- 7:46and make you see something that isn' t there. I really thought that
- 7:49was the case, but my false perception of what was happening there soon faded
- 7:55away. My reflection began to run in my direction. It looked like he
- 8:01wanted to get me for a thousandths of a second. I came to think
- 8:03that it was someone else who was someone else lost in the maze, just
- 8:09like me, or maybe someone in charge of the attraction. But that thought
- 8:16faded away before I could really seriously think about it, for the figure was
- 8:20exactly like me in all physical aspects. My face was his, his clothes
- 8:26identical to mine, hair, skin color, complexion, everything except for just
- 8:31one thing, something that made us different from me and that was the eyes.
- 8:39The eyes of that being were completely black. He had no pupils or
- 8:43any trait other than complete darkness within the eye sockets. It was horrible to
- 8:50see a version of myself running towards me who knows with what strange intentions I
- 8:56ran in the opposite direction to that being who, like r rrido and without
- 9:00looking exactly where I was going, because the dread took over me. Seeing
- 9:05that, chasing me and listening to his footsteps ever closer to mine, I
- 9:09ran and ran over with countless mirrors, until on one of those roads I
- 9:13found a dead end, a dead end. Then I would have to return,
- 9:22but it seemed too late, for seconds before I listened to the footsteps
- 9:28of my reflection, chasing me and very close to me. When I stopped
- 9:31looking at the hallway where I came and turned my back to the mirror that
- 9:37created the end of that road, paying attention to the noise of the surroundings,
- 9:41I realized that there were no more footsteps. I didn' t hear
- 9:45anything but the lights on the ceiling, producing some sort of vibration. When
- 9:48a buzz was on, it was the only thing I could hear in those
- 9:54disturbing moments. Apart from my exasperated breathing, I walked shyly down the hallway
- 10:01back. I was troubled by the reflections that appeared everywhere and gave me no
- 10:07room to think that that strange encounter had already passed, for it seemed that
- 10:11any of the reflections would turn towards me and come out of the wall again,
- 10:16just as it happened moments ago. When I saw the reflexes of anger,
- 10:22which were projected everywhere, I could see how they disobeyed my movements,
- 10:28as some far away moved unnaturally, in a way in which I had not
- 10:33moved. And when you focus your eyes on those reflexes. Everything seemed normal,
- 10:39as if any other mirror was concerned. At times I thought or tried
- 10:45to think that everything was part of the attraction that was designed this way to
- 10:50cause shock to the person who entered, but it made no sense. It
- 10:54was a maze of mirrors, not a scary house. Besides, I don
- 10:58' t know how they could create a replica of myself, which would get
- 11:03out of the mirror and chase me couldn' t be part of the attraction.
- 11:09It was too huge a thing. I kept walking down the halls and
- 11:13looked for a way to locate myself. I tried to locate myself, but
- 11:18it was impossible for me. The despair of going the same way over and
- 11:22over again without knowing if they were really the same passageways or if they were
- 11:28different rooms but with the same appearance I started to lose my mind, so
- 11:33I decided to leave traces. There was a stone in my pants, which
- 11:37I took off the street only because of its peculiar shape. It was a
- 11:41triangle- shaped rock with one of the tips, something sharp fit in my
- 11:46hand perfectly, so, having no other way to leave a trail, I
- 11:50went scratching the mirrors of the corridors where I passed, mainly in the corners,
- 11:56because they were the most visible places. He left a big arrow doing
- 12:03a scratch on the mirror. The arrow indicated which direction he had not gone
- 12:07and following that pattern sooner or later, he would leave the place. I
- 12:13continued walking faster and faster, marking the mirrors I thought would be recognizable.
- 12:18But after minutes something too strange happened. There were arrows that I was sure
- 12:26I had not done, as they were smaller and not exactly scratches on the
- 12:31mirrors, but were directly cracks. Glasses were starting to break, but I
- 12:37' m sure that wasn' t the cause of my marks. They were
- 12:41signs I hadn' t left there. At that point, I didn'
- 12:45t care about the scolding that might exist because I was ruining the mirrors in
- 12:50the living room. I just wanted to get out of there in extreme despair.
- 12:54I didn' t care to break the mirrors to get the attention of
- 12:58the outsiders, but I was more terrified than desperate and I was afraid to
- 13:03cause a loud noise and come across that strange reflection of mine again, which
- 13:09minutes ago had been chasing me to mark the mirrors, it didn' t
- 13:13help me at all. It only increased my despair, as I was beginning
- 13:18to encounter the same arrows I had let me know that I was going in
- 13:24circles and I had been doing it for Who knows how long. Besides finding
- 13:28those strange marks that I hadn' t left the cracks in the mirrors,
- 13:33which made me think that maybe there was someone else who was also desperately looking
- 13:39for a way out, just like me. After passing through another of the
- 13:43seemingly endless corridors, I could see the figure of a person who clearly wasn
- 13:48' t me, but I only managed to see how he was bending through
- 13:52one of the corners of the corridors, I saw a heel that disappeared quickly,
- 13:58without giving me time to dissins any fraction of the clothes that that person
- 14:03would wear or less, some facial or characteristic of the individual. I tried
- 14:07to get his attention by talking to him, calling out and chasing him,
- 14:13but he couldn' t find anything or anyone. All of a sudden I
- 14:18saw reflexes away from that person, probably from that person, because if he
- 14:22was there, it was obvious that the glass was going to reveal him by
- 14:26announcing his position from other angles. But this didn' t do me much
- 14:30good either, because the figures quickly disappeared, leaving me just as the persecution
- 14:35began or even more confused, all the attempts I made seemed useless, because
- 14:43I inevitably remained alone and without knowing where to go, what direction to take
- 14:48you and the places I was in were new or if I had already traveled
- 14:52them before. Minutes after this, the lights were starting to blink, which
- 14:58was what was the most terror used in me, because without light I would
- 15:01be totally trapped. I wasn' t going to be able to leave the
- 15:05place by chance, I didn' t know why there was no one left
- 15:09and who seemed to be abandoned in the middle of the attraction. I accelerated
- 15:13my heart was beating very fast. My fear was intensifying and I didn'
- 15:18t want to stay in the dark. I started screaming for help, hoping
- 15:22that someone could listen to me away. I started running in all directions and
- 15:28I stopped having the caution I used to be. But everything seemed to be
- 15:33useless. Then I began to meet the arrows in the crystals, the marks
- 15:39I made myself to know where I had already passed, which indicated to me
- 15:43that I kept going around in circles, without advancing, without approaching the exit.
- 15:48Then I felt like I couldn' t take it anymore. My despair
- 15:52was enormous. At times I thought I was having a horrible nightmare where I
- 15:58was trapped forever there, surrounded by mirrors, in hallways, convoluted that always
- 16:04lead to the same places as some kind of hell or punishment. Then it
- 16:11all stopped. My feet stopped I paused to recover the breath I had lost
- 16:15due to the despair of running and overthinking everything. Seconds later, the lights
- 16:22went out. I was totally in the dark. I couldn' t even
- 16:26tell my hands a few inches away from my nose. When my eyes began
- 16:33to get used to the darkness, I began to see how my reflections on
- 16:37the crystals began to move independently to the way I moved. They all turned
- 16:42their heads turning to see me in unison. That' s when I felt
- 16:48again as terror climbed up my spine and detonated in the urge to run away.
- 16:56I ran back in any direction. Seeing how little darkness allowed me to
- 17:00my sides, I could see that the mirrors close to me did not reflect
- 17:04my figure. They were simply replicating the shape of the other mirrors and creating
- 17:11the forever infinite loop, but without me being involved. It was like an
- 17:15optical illusion of some kind, but I didn' t understand how this was
- 17:21possible. I looked back at me as I continued to run and I could
- 17:26see dozens of reflections of myself, persecuting myself as my first encounter with this
- 17:32phenomenon, but on this occasion multiplied by twenty or thirty, not seeing where
- 17:37I was going, I bumped into the glass opposite, fell to the ground
- 17:41as I listened as the broken crystals fell along with me. Then I don
- 17:45' t remember anything else from the later moments This I woke up exalted in
- 17:52the hospital. I opened my eyes and the light from the ceiling of the
- 17:55place made me enchanted. Everything was too bright and I was not lucid.
- 18:00My mother was there and explained to me how things had happened. He told
- 18:04me that I despaired inside the maze of mirrors and that I started running in
- 18:10all directions until I crashed into one of the crystals, breaking it and making
- 18:15me lose consciousness. I did not understand what she explained to me, for
- 18:19it was as if everything that happened had not really happened, as if I
- 18:23had imagined that strange and at the same time horrible experience, but it felt
- 18:30too real and there was no way that it had been some hallucination or dream
- 18:34of mine I cut a part of my face with the glass against which I
- 18:38hit the wound healed with the passing of the weeks, but it remained as
- 18:44a reminder of that strange and horrendous experience. After what happened, I didn
- 18:48' t dare tell anyone what happened only to my mother and brothers, who
- 18:52told me that sometimes we used to imagine those things when we passed out.
- 18:57They said that I probably imagined everything because of the despair that invaded me at
- 19:03those moments, but I didn' t know how to explain it or to
- 19:08give them the understanding that it wasn' t a dream that had really happened,
- 19:15because it was too real to have just imagined it. I was sure
- 19:18that I stayed at least an hour in that place in complete solitude seeing things
- 19:22I had never seen before, sinister phenomena within those mirrors so difficult to explain
- 19:30that the best excuse is simply to say that it was an attribution of my
- 19:34Mind time passed and gradually I was convinced that yes. That experience had been
- 19:41something that occurred within my imagination, not knowing how else to explain it,
- 19:47without having a basis for thinking that what had happened to me had happened.
- 19:52So, I got used to believing that everything was fake a dream only until
- 19:56twenty years later, one night I was drying my head with a towel.
- 20:03After I took a bath. Then I glanced at the foggy mirror in the
- 20:08bathroom and discovered that my reflection was not obeying my movements. The self on
- 20:15the other side only stood static, totally naked and without even having a towel
- 20:22in his hands, as I did. Actually. Realizing this, I quickly
- 20:26turned to see what was really going on with the reflection of that crystal.
- 20:33But staring at him, everything was normal. The reflection obeyed my movements.
- 20:37Like any other time. One day I got my own reflection for hours,
- 20:44because there was something in me that deserved that twenty years ago had not been
- 20:48a dream and that until now it began to manifest again. I saw the
- 20:55mirror for a long time, it just blinked, it didn' t take
- 21:00away my eyes, it was my counterpart in the glass. As the minutes
- 21:03passed, I was unaware, figure my face, I could see someone else
- 21:07' s, something was there, which was too strange to be able to
- 21:12explain, to give it a logical sense. After more than an hour of
- 21:18sitting down and seeing myself in that mirror and blinking. My eyes on his
- 21:22reflective counterpart turned totally black. I was so scared that I jumped back.
- 21:30But after this, everything was just as new. But to me that was
- 21:34proof that something was actually going on on the other side of the reflection,
- 21:38something sinister that woke up after I got into that maze of mirrors, after
- 21:45having checked this out. I try to look at the reflective surfaces as little
- 21:48as possible. Anonymous account
