- 0:00Speaker 1: The Calm Games. It almost didn't happen underweigh in Glasgow
- 0:03Speaker 1: one hundred and fourteen kre we athletes ten sports opening
- 0:06Speaker 1: The ceremony kicks off this morning. Last night we started
- 0:09Speaker 1: with lawn bowls.
- 0:10Speaker 2: It was originally an opening ceremony birthday and now it's
- 0:13Speaker 2: a game one birthday, So no, I think it's a
- 0:16Speaker 2: pretty cool way to spend a birthday, isn't it?
- 0:18Speaker 1: Clearly the birthday of New Zealand. Bowl of Selena Goddard
- 0:21Speaker 1: in Glasgow Andrew all of us in Newstalk ZBI sports
- 0:23Speaker 1: readers with us this morning Andrew good Morning.
- 0:25Speaker 2: Greeting's Ryan, So how did we go with the bowls
- 0:28Speaker 2: of solid start? I think with Selena Godard and kitly Ninch.
- 0:31Speaker 2: They eventually won a tie break against Kenya, so first
- 0:35Speaker 2: round went for them. And also Shannon McElroy with leading
- 0:39Speaker 2: off at the indoor bowls rink and picking up a
- 0:42Speaker 2: wind over Liam Hill from Tonga. So there's New Zealand's
- 0:45Speaker 2: opening a gam But if you like at these Comwealth Games,
- 0:48Speaker 2: probably understated Comwealth Games in many ways in Glasgow, but
- 0:51Speaker 2: then they would have happened if Glaso hadn't stepped in
- 0:54Speaker 2: and continued this tradition dating back to nineteen thirty and
- 1:00Speaker 2: Dasco stepping in of course twenty fourteen hosts of the event,
- 1:03Speaker 2: and I guess had the infrastructure still in place from
- 1:05Speaker 2: twelve years ago to be able to do it. So Yeah,
- 1:08Speaker 2: it's low key though, isn't it.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It is a bit low key low key start. I'm
- 1:12Speaker 1: the thing that's got me excited is Kerr and the
- 1:14Speaker 1: high jump and whether he'll jump or not because he
- 1:16Speaker 1: hasn't He's sort of going to make up his mind
- 1:18Speaker 1: at the eleventh hour, isn't it.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Yeah, Well, it'd be great to see him in action
- 1:22Speaker 2: with Hamish Cure and just something just with the CV
- 1:25Speaker 2: that he's built over the last few years. And yeah,
- 1:28Speaker 2: hopefully at least for the Games and for I guess
- 1:31Speaker 2: the profile of the event if you like, and for
- 1:33Speaker 2: New Zealand. Will that will capture hearts and minds and imaginations.
- 1:36Speaker 2: And I think that's that's probably key to it to
- 1:38Speaker 2: be able to keep this event going.
- 1:40Speaker 1: We are we going to win lots of golds.
- 1:43Speaker 2: I think it'll be limited this time because the sports
- 1:45Speaker 2: are so rejected. You've got your core what athletic cycling
- 1:49Speaker 2: in swimming, and then a few others edit and we
- 1:50Speaker 2: haven't got the traditional I guess some of the favorites
- 1:55Speaker 2: of hockey, sevens, etc. It's still got netball and bowls,
- 1:58Speaker 2: I think importantly with the Commwalth games, netble and bowls,
- 2:02Speaker 2: it's a pinnacle event for them to some degree, and
- 2:04Speaker 2: therefore that's that's where the comic game still has a place. Otherwise,
- 2:09Speaker 2: I think some of it has diluted these days. I
- 2:12Speaker 2: mean from I guess the heyday of yesteryear. But yeah,
- 2:17Speaker 2: with the I guess world championships every year, a lot
- 2:20Speaker 2: of sports now increased travelers. Once upon a time it
- 2:22Speaker 2: was a proper adventure to be able to go across
- 2:24Speaker 2: and you know, it was just sort of second to
- 2:26Speaker 2: the Olympics. But now there's so many other other events
- 2:29Speaker 2: that that I guess are in between. That's it's more
- 2:31Speaker 2: of a jamboree. I suppose.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah, And you've got to save you That's what Hamishkur saying,
- 2:35Speaker 1: isn't it. He'll either do it, compete here or not
- 2:37Speaker 1: compete here and save himself for September. I think it is.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, So okay, so there we go. I mean, it's
- 2:44Speaker 2: other way at seven am. We've got David Lead, the
- 2:48Speaker 2: veteran weightlifter, and MOREA Devillia's judoka are going to be
- 2:51Speaker 2: New Zealand's flag bearers.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Fantastic. Andrew Ortison was sport this morning and the games
- 2:55Speaker 1: kick off for the opening ceremony kicking off in a
- 2:58Speaker 1: couple of hours.
