- 0:16Welcome back to Financial Feminism.
- 0:19I'm Dr. Toneka Bruce.
- 0:21And every week we're having conversations that many
- 0:24of us should have have been having years
- 0:27ago.
- 0:27Not because women aren't capable.
- 0:30Not because women aren't intelligent.
- 0:33But because somewhere along the way, many of
- 0:36us were taught how to work hard without
- 0:38even ever being taught how to own.
- 0:42And today I want to talk about one
- 0:44word that I believe has the power to
- 0:47completely change your financial future.
- 0:49Ownership.
- 0:51Not because everyone needs to quit their job.
- 0:55Not because everyone should become an entrepreneur.
- 0:59But because ownership changes the way you think.
- 1:04It changes the questions you ask.
- 1:08It changes the decisions you make.
- 1:10It changes what you leave behind.
- 1:13If you've been following this journey with me,
- 1:16we've already talked about money shame.
- 1:18We've talked about why so many successful women
- 1:22still feel financially insecure.
- 1:25Today we're taking the next step.
- 1:28We're moving from healing to building.
- 1:31So grab your notebook.
- 1:33This episode may completely change the way you
- 1:36think about money.
- 1:38When I ask women a simple question, what
- 1:41do you own?
- 1:42Most people immediately start naming things like my
- 1:48car, my house, my furniture, my jewelry, my
- 1:52retirement account.
- 1:54Those aren't bad answers, but they're incomplete because
- 1:59ownership is bigger than possessions.
- 2:02Ownership is influence.
- 2:05Ownership is opportunity.
- 2:07Ownership is options.
- 2:09Ownership is having something that continues creating value
- 2:14whether you're working today or not.
- 2:17Think about it.
- 2:19If you stop going to work tomorrow, what
- 2:22continues working for you?
- 2:25For many women, nothing.
- 2:28And that's not criticism.
- 2:30It's awareness.
- 2:30Because almost every one of us grew up
- 2:34hearing the same advice.
- 2:36Go to school.
- 2:38Get good grades.
- 2:39Find a stable job.
- 2:42Work hard.
- 2:43Retire someday.
- 2:45There's nothing wrong with that path.
- 2:48It's created incredible opportunities for millions of women.
- 2:53But here's the question I want you to
- 2:55wrestle with today.
- 2:57Is your income your only strategy?
- 3:01Because if the answer is yes, then your
- 3:04financial future depends almost entirely on your ability
- 3:08to continue working.
- 3:10What happens if you get sick?
- 3:13Need to care for a parent?
- 3:16Want to spend more time with your children?
- 3:20Choose to work less?
- 3:22Want to volunteer?
- 3:23Want to travel?
- 3:26Want to retire earlier?
- 3:29When income stops, what continues?
- 3:34That question changed my life, not because I
- 3:37suddenly became wealthy, but because I realized I'd
- 3:41been measuring my progress by income instead of
- 3:45ownership.
- 3:46They're not the same thing.
- 3:49You can make a great income and own
- 3:52very little.
- 3:54You can also earn a modest income while
- 3:57slowly building assets that create more opportunities over
- 4:01time.
- 4:03That's the shift we're making today, from earning
- 4:05to owning.
- 4:08When we come back, I'm going to introduce
- 4:11a framework that's completely changed the way I
- 4:14think about financial growth.
- 4:16I call it the ownership ladder, and I
- 4:19think every woman should understand it.
- 4:23Financial Feminism is presented by OwnThePurse.com.
- 4:27If today's conversation is helping you see money
- 4:30differently, download your free ownership resources, join our
- 4:35community of women building financial confidence together, and
- 4:39discover tools designed to help you move from
- 4:42earning to owning.
- 4:43Visit OwnThePurse.com to get you started.
- 4:48When we left off, I asked you one
- 4:51question.
- 4:52What continues working for you if you stop
- 4:55working?
- 4:56Now, don't answer too quickly.
- 4:58Really think about it.
- 5:01Because for years, if someone had asked me
- 5:04that question, my answer would have been nothing.
- 5:07And maybe that's your answer today, too.
- 5:09And if it is, don't feel discouraged, feel
- 5:12encouraged.
- 5:13Because awareness is where change begins.
- 5:17You can't build what you don't first recognize
- 5:20is missing.
- 5:22So I want you to imagine something with
- 5:24me.
- 5:25Picture two women.
- 5:27They're both 45 years old.
- 5:30They both make $100,000 a year.
- 5:34Both are respected in their careers.
- 5:36Both have worked incredibly hard.
- 5:40On paper, they're almost identical.
- 5:43Now, let's look a little bit closer.
- 5:46The first woman has one stream of income,
- 5:49her paycheck.
- 5:50If she doesn't work, the money stops.
- 5:54The second woman also has a paycheck.
- 5:58But she also owns a small rental property.
- 6:02She owns investments.
- 6:03She wrote a book that earns royalties.
- 6:08She has a digital course.
- 6:11Maybe she owns part of a business.
- 6:14Maybe she owns land.
- 6:17Maybe, you know what, let's throw this in
- 6:19there.
- 6:19Maybe she invested in someone else's company.
- 6:23Her paycheck matters, but it isn't her entire
- 6:27financial identity.
- 6:29And here's the interesting part.
- 6:31They can earn the same amount, yet one
- 6:34woman has options the other doesn't.
- 6:38That word, options, that's what ownership creates.
- 6:43Ownership isn't about becoming rich.
- 6:46Ownership creates choices.
- 6:49The choice to take time off.
- 6:52The choice to care for your aging parents.
- 6:55The choice to start over.
- 6:57The choice to leave a toxic job.
- 7:02The choice to spend more time with your
- 7:04children.
- 7:06To volunteer.
- 7:08The choice to simply say no.
- 7:12Money doesn't always buy happiness, but ownership often
- 7:17buys options.
- 7:19And options reduce fear.
- 7:21That's why this conversation matters.
- 7:24Because so many women have spent decades trying
- 7:27to earn more without ever asking, what am
- 7:31I building?
- 7:32Income is incredibly important.
- 7:35Please don't misunderstand me.
- 7:38Your career matters.
- 7:39Your profession matters.
- 7:41Your expertise matters.
- 7:44I'm a nurse.
- 7:45I've built businesses.
- 7:47I've worked hard for every opportunity I've had.
- 7:51I'm not against earning.
- 7:53I'm against believing earning is the finish line.
- 7:57It's the starting line.
- 7:59The goal isn't just to make money.
- 8:02The goal is to slowly convert today's income
- 8:06into tomorrow's ownership.
- 8:09That's a completely different mindset.
- 8:12And I want to introduce you to something
- 8:13I call the ownership ladder.
- 8:16This isn't an investment strategy.
- 8:18It's a way of thinking.
- 8:21So picture this.
- 8:22Picture a ladder.
- 8:24Every rung represents another layer of financial stability.
- 8:29The first rung is income.
- 8:32That's where almost everyone starts.
- 8:34Someone pays you for your time or your
- 8:37talent or your expertise.
- 8:39There's dignity in that, so never underestimate honest
- 8:43work.
- 8:44The second rung is savings.
- 8:47Now, you're not simply earning.
- 8:50You're keeping part of what you earn at
- 8:53this point.
- 8:54You're creating margin.
- 8:57The third rung is investments.
- 9:00Your money begins doing some of the work
- 9:03instead of asking your body to do all
- 9:05of it.
- 9:07The fourth rung is assets.
- 9:10Assets are things that have the potential to
- 9:13create value over time.
- 9:17Sometimes they produce income.
- 9:20Sometimes they appreciate.
- 9:22Sometimes they even do both.
- 9:25The fifth rung is ownership.
- 9:29Now, this is where everything begins changing.
- 9:33Ownership could mean a business, a patent, a
- 9:39trademark, a book, real estate, dividend-producing investments,
- 9:48a website, a piece of land, a valuable
- 9:54skill, intellectual property.
- 9:59See, ownership means you become accustomed to, or
- 10:04better yet, let's say, you've begun creating something
- 10:08bigger than today's paycheck.
- 10:11Then there's the final rung.
- 10:14Legacy.
- 10:15Legacy asks one question.
- 10:20What continues helping people after I'm gone?
- 10:24Think about that.
- 10:26That's a different way to measure success.
- 10:30Not how much did I make, but what
- 10:34did I build that continues blessing others?
- 10:37That's the financial feminism vision.
- 10:41Not more stuff, more significance.
- 10:45Not more consumption, more contribution.
- 10:49Not more comparison, more ownership.
- 10:54This episode of Financial Feminism is presented by
- 10:59OwnThePurse.com, where we're helping women build confidence
- 11:03through ownership.
- 11:04If today's conversation is challenging the way you've
- 11:08always thought about money, download the ownership resources
- 11:12and join thousands of women who are learning
- 11:15to move from earning to owning, one practical
- 11:18step at a time.
- 11:20I want to tell you something that changed
- 11:23the trajectory of my own thinking.
- 11:26Years ago, I realized I had been asking
- 11:29the wrong question.
- 11:31Like many people, I kept asking, how can
- 11:35I make more money?
- 11:37That's not a bad question, but it's not
- 11:40the best question.
- 11:42The better question is, how can I turn
- 11:44today's income into something I'll still own five
- 11:49years from now?
- 11:51That one question changes how you spend.
- 11:56It changes how you save.
- 11:58It changes what you learn.
- 12:02It changes who you spend your time with.
- 12:06Yes, I said that.
- 12:07It changes the books you read.
- 12:10It even changes how you look at opportunities.
- 12:14Instead of asking, will this make me money
- 12:17today, you begin asking yourself, could this become
- 12:22an asset tomorrow?
- 12:24Maybe it's learning a skill no one can
- 12:27take away from you.
- 12:29Maybe it's buying your first share of an
- 12:31investment.
- 12:33Maybe it's purchasing a domain name for an
- 12:36idea you've been sitting on.
- 12:39Maybe it's writing the first chapter of the
- 12:42book you've talked about for years.
- 12:45It took me 20 years to write my
- 12:47first book.
- 12:49Maybe it's starting a side business that grows
- 12:53slowly while you keep your full-time job.
- 12:57Maybe it's simply paying off debt so more
- 13:00of your future income belongs to you instead
- 13:03of your past decisions.
- 13:05Ownership doesn't always begin with a purchase.
- 13:08Sometimes ownership begins with a decision.
- 13:12A decision that says, I refuse to let
- 13:15my paycheck be the only thing standing between
- 13:18me and my future.
- 13:20Remember, financial feminism isn't asking every woman to
- 13:25become a CEO.
- 13:27It's asking every woman to become an owner
- 13:30of something that creates value.
- 13:34That something will look different for each of
- 13:37us.
- 13:38For one woman, it may be a rental
- 13:41property.
- 13:41For another, it's a thriving business.
- 13:46For another, it's a portfolio of investments.
- 13:50For another, it's a book that reaches people
- 13:52long after it's published.
- 13:55The point isn't to copy someone else's path.
- 13:59The point is to stop believing your only
- 14:01path is earning more.
- 14:04Now as we close today, I want to
- 14:06leave you with one challenge.
- 14:09Take out a piece of paper.
- 14:11Make two columns.
- 14:14In the first column, write everything that pays
- 14:18you.
- 14:19In the second column, write everything you own
- 14:23that has the potential to create value in
- 14:27the future.
- 14:29Don't judge the list.
- 14:31Just look at it honestly and then ask
- 14:34yourself one question.
- 14:36One year from today, what do I want
- 14:41to add to the ownership column?
- 14:44That one answer may become the beginning of
- 14:49a completely different financial future.
- 14:53Because here's what I hope you'll remember long
- 14:56after this episode ends.
- 14:58Income pays today's bills.
- 15:02Ownership changes tomorrow's possibilities.
- 15:05Before we finish today, I want to ask
- 15:08you to do something that may feel a
- 15:11little bit uncomfortable.
- 15:13Now don't answer this question quickly.
- 15:17Don't answer with what sounds impressive.
- 15:20Answer honestly.
- 15:21If someone sat down across from you today
- 15:24and asked, What do you own?
- 15:28What would be your answer?
- 15:30Would you start listing things you purchased?
- 15:33Your car, your home, your jewelry, your furniture?
- 15:37Or would you begin talking about the things
- 15:39you've intentionally built?
- 15:41Because again, those two are very different conversations.
- 15:46One conversation is about consumption.
- 15:50The other, it's about creation.
- 15:53And for years, I celebrated every promotion, every
- 15:56raise, every accomplishment, and I should have done
- 16:01that.
- 16:01That's true.
- 16:03I mean, hard work does deserve to be
- 16:06celebrated.
- 16:07But somewhere along the way, I realized something.
- 16:10I was spending a lot of time building
- 16:14my resume.
- 16:15I hadn't spent nearly enough time building my
- 16:18ownership.
- 16:19And maybe you felt that too.
- 16:21You've done everything people told you to do.
- 16:25You earned the degree.
- 16:27You worked overtime.
- 16:29You took care of your spouse and your
- 16:33children, your household.
- 16:35You became dependable.
- 16:38People trust you.
- 16:40People respect you.
- 16:42You're the one everyone calls when they need
- 16:44help.
- 16:46And yet, deep down, you still wonder if
- 16:51you're really getting ahead.
- 16:53Now, if that's you, I want you to
- 16:56hear me.
- 16:57You are not behind.
- 17:00You simply may have been following an incomplete
- 17:02roadmap.
- 17:03No one taught many of us how to
- 17:06ask ownership questions.
- 17:09Instead of asking, how can I earn another
- 17:12$5,000, what if we started asking, what
- 17:17could I begin building with the money I
- 17:19already earn?
- 17:21That's a completely different conversation because ownership doesn't
- 17:26always begin with a purchase.
- 17:29Sometimes ownership begins with permission.
- 17:32Permission to believe you're capable.
- 17:36Permission to learn.
- 17:38Permission to make mistakes.
- 17:40Permission to just start small.
- 17:43And I think sometimes we imagine ownership belonging
- 17:48to other people.
- 17:50People with more money.
- 17:52People with more education.
- 17:53Or more connections and more confidence.
- 17:57But every business owner once had no business.
- 18:02Every investor bought a first investment.
- 18:06Every author wrote one blank page.
- 18:11Every woman who owns something today started by
- 18:15owning almost nothing.
- 18:17That's the beauty of ownership.
- 18:20It grows.
- 18:21Slowly.
- 18:23Quietly.
- 18:25Patiently.
- 18:27You don't wake up one morning with a
- 18:29legacy.
- 18:30You build one.
- 18:31One decision at a time.
- 18:34Now I want to leave you with something
- 18:36practical.
- 18:37Tonight, before you go to bed, take out
- 18:41a notebook.
- 18:42Across the top of one page, write what
- 18:47I earn.
- 18:48And if you didn't do this earlier, pay
- 18:50attention now.
- 18:51Write what I earn.
- 18:54Across the top of another page, or the
- 18:58other half of the page, write what I
- 19:01own.
- 19:02Be honest.
- 19:03No one else is going to see it.
- 19:05Just you.
- 19:06And then ask yourself one more question.
- 19:10If I kept living exactly like I am
- 19:14today, what would those two lists look like
- 19:18five years from now?
- 19:19Would your income grow while your ownership stays
- 19:23the same?
- 19:24Or would both begin growing together?
- 19:28Because that's the future I want for you.
- 19:32Not simply a better paycheck.
- 19:35A stronger foundation.
- 19:38Not simply more income.
- 19:40More influence.
- 19:42More options.
- 19:44More confidence.
- 19:46More ownership.
- 19:48And before we close, I'd love to invite
- 19:51you to make one commitment.
- 19:53Not to me.
- 19:54To yourself.
- 19:56Complete this sentence.
- 19:59One year from today, I will own blank.
- 20:05Say it out loud.
- 20:06Write it down.
- 20:08Share it with someone that you trust.
