- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, this is Adam, host to the podcast you're
- 0:03Speaker 1: about to listen to. Don't skip this. It's not an
- 0:07Speaker 1: ad just dropping in to let you know. This episode
- 0:10Speaker 1: was originally recorded and released back in July of twenty eighteen,
- 0:15Speaker 1: but at the time it was a subscriber only episode.
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're releasing it publicly now because I'm gonna be honest,
- 0:24Speaker 1: I don't think any episode we could possibly release would
- 0:28Speaker 1: be more timely than this one, because I think we
- 0:31Speaker 1: can all agree the most important thing happening in the
- 0:35Speaker 1: United States this November is obviously the NBA Draft, which
- 0:40Speaker 1: is happening Wednesday, November eighteenth, and to celebrate that, we're
- 0:45Speaker 1: re releasing this episode, which is about the nineteen eighty
- 0:48Speaker 1: five NBA draft, which seems like it might have been
- 0:53Speaker 1: rigged just a little bit. Now, all of that said,
- 0:57Speaker 1: if you were a subscriber Patreon or Supercast, you would
- 1:02Speaker 1: be getting a bonus episode today, which would be part
- 1:06Speaker 1: two of our exploration into the strange, strange death of
- 1:13Speaker 1: Senator Paul Wellstone. That's a whole series of episodes and
- 1:18Speaker 1: it'll be out publicly in some form at some point.
- 1:21Speaker 1: But if you're a subscriber, you can give it a
- 1:24Speaker 1: listen right now. So fine. I guess this was kind
- 1:26Speaker 1: of an ad Patreon dot com slash on Pops on Popsnetwork,
- 1:30Speaker 1: dot supercast, dot tech. Anyway, let's listen to this episode
- 1:33Speaker 1: about the nineteen eighty five NBA Draft. Thanks everybody, we
- 1:37Speaker 1: love you.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Story.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Welcome to Conspiracy The Show with your hosts Adam Todd
- 1:53Speaker 1: Brown and conra mix Pattern. Hey, everybody, welcome to Conspiracy
- 2:11Speaker 1: the Show. I'm Adam Todd Brown, I'm Brett Raider. You're
- 2:14Speaker 1: not Connor mcspaden. Oh, I am not. Connor is writing
- 2:19Speaker 1: for a Comedy Central roast the next couple of weeks.
- 2:23Speaker 1: I don't know if I'm supposed to say which one,
- 2:25Speaker 1: so I'll just say that I think it's actually been
- 2:27Speaker 1: a nounce. I actually don't remember who it is, but
- 2:30Speaker 1: it's Luce Willis. Yes, yes, that's yeah. Yeah, I've read
- 2:34Speaker 1: about it online. Yeah, he's he's writing for that. He
- 2:37Speaker 1: just posted. He posted about it on Instagram, So I
- 2:39Speaker 1: assume I'm fine. We're talking. It's still Sports Month. I
- 2:42Speaker 1: don't know why I said still. This is the second
- 2:44Speaker 1: week of Sports Month on Conspiracy The Show, so it
- 2:47Speaker 1: still is week. Last week we talked about Barry Bonds
- 2:52Speaker 1: and my personal conspiracy theory that Major League Baseball kind
- 2:58Speaker 1: of manufactured the steroid scandal. They supplied to steroids to
- 3:03Speaker 1: cover up the amphetamine scandal and to just credit Barry Bonds.
- 3:08Speaker 1: So this week we're talking about the nineteen eighty five
- 3:12Speaker 1: NBA Draft lottery. Of course, the Yeah, the conspiracy. That's
- 3:18Speaker 1: the biggest conspiracy of all sports conspiracies, right, I think so. Well,
- 3:24Speaker 1: I think we'll glance over a few other NBA ones,
- 3:27Speaker 1: but the NBA. That's what may I should add before
- 3:31Speaker 1: we get started that a lot of the research for
- 3:34Speaker 1: this episode comes from the book The twenty five Greatest
- 3:37Speaker 1: Sports Conspiracy Theories of All Time by Elliott Kolb. And
- 3:41Speaker 1: then there's also some YouTube videos. We'll put up links
- 3:44Speaker 1: you get it. This seems believable to me, just because
- 3:47Speaker 1: the NBA is just seems like a shady outfit. Now.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I was aware of this for a long long time,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and I did zero research into it until you sent
- 3:58Speaker 1: me that this would be the topic, and you sent
- 4:01Speaker 1: me a couple of links and YouTube videos to look over.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I had heard one version of the conspiracy theory, which
- 4:06Speaker 1: is the hardest to prove right, And I didn't even
- 4:11Speaker 1: know the version that we're going to go through today,
- 4:14Speaker 1: which is basically like very very provable. Yeah. The only
- 4:18Speaker 1: thing you can't prove is like the intent of people
- 4:23Speaker 1: who you know of this thing that happened thirty three
- 4:25Speaker 1: years ago. Right, But it seems like the intent is
- 4:29Speaker 1: pretty I think they make a good case for this,
- 4:31Speaker 1: so we can make a good case for like what
- 4:34Speaker 1: the what the motivation would be? Right? And the thing
- 4:38Speaker 1: about the NBA, they have cheating scandals pretty often, but
- 4:43Speaker 1: they usually land on the side of the referees. They're
- 4:46Speaker 1: a good mark. Yeah. The what was the Fall Guy?
- 4:51Speaker 1: What good fall guy? Freeze? Nobody likes him anyways. I
- 4:54Speaker 1: thought you were making a reference to the TV show
- 4:57Speaker 1: The Fall Guy. Now, for some reason, my years perked up.
- 5:00Speaker 1: Watch that a lot as a kid. Who was the
- 5:03Speaker 1: ref that got in trut? I don't he actually went?
- 5:07Speaker 1: Once you click on it, I'll remember it. Prison, Yeah,
- 5:09Speaker 1: Tim Donaghe, Tim Donaghe, and I remember that guy like
- 5:13Speaker 1: he He was an NBA ref for a long goddamn
- 5:17Speaker 1: time and eventually served fifteen months in prison for betting
- 5:22Speaker 1: on games and possibly fixing games with the help of
- 5:27Speaker 1: or at the behest of the mafia. Yeah, and it
- 5:32Speaker 1: comes up all the time. People point out that officiating
- 5:37Speaker 1: is always not always, but there are a lot of
- 5:41Speaker 1: cases where it seems like they're officiating in a way
- 5:44Speaker 1: to make a certain outcome happen. And yeah, so just
- 5:48Speaker 1: to explain for the people who don't really follow sports,
- 5:51Speaker 1: it's it's I mean, I guess it's easy to do
- 5:53Speaker 1: in really any sport any But basically, what a referee
- 5:56Speaker 1: will do is they'll sort of officiate a game in
- 5:59Speaker 1: a way that at certain like maybe the maybe lots
- 6:02Speaker 1: of players on one team get fouls and players on
- 6:04Speaker 1: the other team don't really get fouls, or they try
- 6:06Speaker 1: and keep it within a certain specific point range, so
- 6:10Speaker 1: you know, just whatever, you know, whatever the higher ups
- 6:12Speaker 1: are like, oh, we want this game to go under
- 6:15Speaker 1: the you know, the right total or over whatever. Yeah.
- 6:18Speaker 1: The most recent example is actually this year's Western Conference Finals,
- 6:23Speaker 1: Game six of the Western Conference Finals, which was it
- 6:28Speaker 1: was pretty clear that Golden State was just not getting
- 6:32Speaker 1: called for fouls, yeah, and Houston was getting called for everything. Also,
- 6:38Speaker 1: Game six of the one or two Western Conference Finals
- 6:42Speaker 1: between the Lakers and the Sacramento Kings. Right, Bricket's Warriors
- 6:46Speaker 1: Game six. This is the this is way too long
- 6:49Speaker 1: to watch all of it out there, but gets called
- 6:52Speaker 1: for if you go out to YouTube Chris H's YouTube
- 6:56Speaker 1: page Rockets versus Warriors w c F Game six officiating.
- 7:01Speaker 1: If they want to call it, they just need to
- 7:03Speaker 1: call it the same way on the other and there
- 7:04Speaker 1: are is the first a lot of examples of Houston
- 7:08Speaker 1: getting called for fouls that Golden State definitely does not
- 7:12Speaker 1: get called. And the thinking behind it is that immediately
- 7:18Speaker 1: the NBA wanted Golden State in the final as opposed
- 7:22Speaker 1: to Houston being restricted by oh yeah obviously, yeah, well,
- 7:26Speaker 1: or they wanted of Nature and having that in the
- 7:31Speaker 1: background is gonna fucking wear me out. It was. It
- 7:33Speaker 1: was destroying me. Yeah, and the the game you just mentioned,
- 7:38Speaker 1: I would argue every championship Shaquille O'Neil won with the Lakers,
- 7:44Speaker 1: three of them, Baby, was an example of horrible officiating
- 7:47Speaker 1: because they would just let Shaquille O'Neill elbow a motherfucker
- 7:51Speaker 1: in the chest and they would never call it. I wonder,
- 7:57Speaker 1: as the Lakers apologist, I wonder if they let him
- 8:01Speaker 1: get those extra calls because they knew at the in
- 8:04Speaker 1: the last five minutes of every game, people would pack
- 8:06Speaker 1: a Shack. Yeah, I mean maybe, but that's basically people
- 8:09Speaker 1: would just intentionally foul him because he was terrible free
- 8:13Speaker 1: throw shit. Yeah, yeah it could have been, but it was. Yeah,
- 8:18Speaker 1: the the game that really stands out during that Lakers runs,
- 8:22Speaker 1: they were playing the Sacramento Kings. Yeah. I think it
- 8:24Speaker 1: was also game six of the Western Yeah, I think
- 8:26Speaker 1: it was one or two. I don't remember specifically which
- 8:29Speaker 1: I believe O two and uh yeah, two thousand and two,
- 8:36Speaker 1: and Sacramento was up by like fifteen at one point. Yeah,
- 8:40Speaker 1: and all of a sudden, like everyone who's guarding Shack
- 8:45Speaker 1: just fouls out. Yeah. And there's one point where Vlade
- 8:49Speaker 1: Divac is already on the bench because he's in foul trouble,
- 8:52Speaker 1: and Scott Pollard fouls out and Vlade Divac just starts
- 8:56Speaker 1: laughing uproariously at the call because it was like the
- 9:02Speaker 1: if you compare what people due to Shaq compared to
- 9:08Speaker 1: what Shaq does to people in this game, like Shaq
- 9:11Speaker 1: should have filed out. I think that's more. The thing
- 9:14Speaker 1: is Shaq would have filed out of every game in
- 9:16Speaker 1: like the second quarter. Well that's that's sort of. I
- 9:21Speaker 1: mean this gets into a larger conversation about like what
- 9:24Speaker 1: superstars are allowed to do versus what other people are
- 9:27Speaker 1: allowed to do routinely. I mean, from Kobe and Michael
- 9:31Speaker 1: Jordan to Lebron and Durant and Chris Paul and James
- 9:36Speaker 1: Harden today, all the superstars to travel all the time.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It's like seven steps to do Alan iverson double dribbled
- 9:44Speaker 1: frequently or they would carry. But if you're a rookie player,
- 9:48Speaker 1: you don't get that call. And there's sort of this
- 9:50Speaker 1: weird hierarchy of like in the artistry of refereeing, they
- 9:56Speaker 1: give the better they give the better players more benefit
- 10:00Speaker 1: of the doubt. Yeah and stuff. And you know what
- 10:03Speaker 1: they're doing here? Is that super loud? Yeah, it is
- 10:07Speaker 1: really loud. Now I understand what you say. It's they're
- 10:09Speaker 1: loud all the time. When when I enjoyed it, just
- 10:14Speaker 1: the mixes.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Different involved And how about now, beautiful everybody coming in
- 10:26Speaker 3: hacking down.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Here's a guy who knows part of it is just
- 10:30Speaker 1: concentrated on two things. Yeah, I'm just a bit so. Yeah,
- 10:37Speaker 1: it happened a lot during It happened with Jordan a
- 10:41Speaker 1: lot too. I won't I'm a Bulls fan, so I'll
- 10:44Speaker 1: be objective about it, and it wasn't so much. It
- 10:47Speaker 1: was more of the traveling with Jordan's Yeah. Well, basically
- 10:50Speaker 1: all this comes down to for the lay person is
- 10:53Speaker 1: that there are many examples of star players getting foul calls,
- 10:59Speaker 1: or players on preferable teams, super teams, super teams, big
- 11:04Speaker 1: market markets, Lakers, Bulls, Golden State Warriors versus the Sacramento Kings,
- 11:11Speaker 1: you know, versus I mean, I guess Houston's a bigger
- 11:13Speaker 1: city than San Francisco. But you know, a lot of
- 11:17Speaker 1: this before we get into the meat of this. This
- 11:19Speaker 1: is all the context is basketball is better, or the
- 11:24Speaker 1: league makes more money, the league is healthier when there
- 11:27Speaker 1: are power teams that are in large media markets, right Chicago,
- 11:32Speaker 1: New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco. I guess you could
- 11:36Speaker 1: add to that. Yeah, they've been added to it like
- 11:39Speaker 1: it used to be the other way. Golden State used
- 11:41Speaker 1: to be the third or fourth biggest in the country.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So it's weird that Houston doesn't get that sort of
- 11:45Speaker 1: deferential treatment. Yeah, liberal bias, But this isn't This isn't
- 11:51Speaker 1: this is not just this is not just a phenomenon
- 11:54Speaker 1: in basketball. This is baseball too. The league likes it
- 11:58Speaker 1: and the rule, and we can get into sort of
- 12:00Speaker 1: salary how the salary cap plays into this as well.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Baseball does better when the Yankees and the Dodgers are
- 12:08Speaker 1: doing better, right, right, and the Cubs and you know,
- 12:12Speaker 1: these teams that have long histories and are from big
- 12:15Speaker 1: markets where there are millions and millions of people watching.
- 12:18Speaker 1: The NFL is very popular in America only. But the
- 12:23Speaker 1: NFL is sort of constructed and the rules are at
- 12:26Speaker 1: the front of the rules that the front offices play
- 12:28Speaker 1: by in terms of them signing which players, how long
- 12:31Speaker 1: they can keep players, and stuff. The rules are made
- 12:34Speaker 1: in the NFL so that there's a lot of variants
- 12:37Speaker 1: each year between which teams are good and which teams
- 12:39Speaker 1: are right. There are still teams like the Patriots, which
- 12:42Speaker 1: are really really good for fifteen years, right, But Jacksonville,
- 12:46Speaker 1: Jacksonville can be Jacksonville made the AFC, they almost went
- 12:49Speaker 1: to the super Bowl. They were one game away from
- 12:51Speaker 1: the super Bowl. Maybe they'll be good for the next
- 12:52Speaker 1: year or two and then they can drop off again.
- 12:55Speaker 1: And Jacksonville being really good at making the super Bowl
- 12:58Speaker 1: for a year or two doesn't hurt the NFL the
- 13:00Speaker 1: way that in baseball, if it's like Seattle versus Tampa Brizona,
- 13:06Speaker 1: those are in the same league. Yeah, Arizona versus Tampa Bay.
- 13:09Speaker 1: That's like, Oh, that's a that's a big that's a
- 13:12Speaker 1: big whiff. It's a bummer. It's a bummer for baseball,
- 13:15Speaker 1: and basketball is very similar. They want the Lakers to do.
- 13:18Speaker 1: That's why the le Bron's on the Lakers right now.
- 13:20Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:20Speaker 1: Yeah, imagine the NBA Finals being like Sacramento versus the
- 13:26Speaker 1: Charlotte Bobcats. Yeah, you'd kill yourself. No one would watch
- 13:30Speaker 1: that exactly. So there is and weirdly, it almost never
- 13:33Speaker 1: happens in the NBA. So to get into the nineteen
- 13:38Speaker 1: eighty five draft, you have to understand that it is
- 13:40Speaker 1: in the league's benefit for teams like the Knicks to
- 13:44Speaker 1: do well, for teams like the Celtics the Lakers to
- 13:48Speaker 1: do well. And it's it's been argued for a long
- 13:51Speaker 1: time that they manipulate the game in a way to
- 13:54Speaker 1: make that happen. Yea, And that's kind of the crux
- 13:56Speaker 1: of what we're talking. We have this video evidence right
- 13:58Speaker 1: here of these we have the Golden State Warriors versus
- 14:01Speaker 1: the Houston Rockets. The Warriors are getting a lot of calls.
- 14:05Speaker 1: It's because they're a super team. Steph Curry is the most.
- 14:08Speaker 1: If you ask anyone under seventeen years old who their
- 14:11Speaker 1: favorite player is, it's Steph Curry. Oh yeah. Even though
- 14:14Speaker 1: he's like six' three and. Incredible he looks on camera
- 14:18Speaker 1: because he's so much shorter than the other. Guys he
- 14:20Speaker 1: looks like he's five four and he has these sweet
- 14:23Speaker 1: baby blue. Eyes he looks like a kid next door
- 14:27Speaker 1: and kids love. Him he's kind of got this pinash
- 14:29Speaker 1: and he like chews on his mouthpiece a certain way
- 14:33Speaker 1: and he fires up these crazy three. Pointers urant obviously
- 14:37Speaker 1: very very popular. Player on the other, Side James, harden
- 14:41Speaker 1: who's who Dates kardashians and goes to strip clubs all the.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Time And Chris, paul who you might recognize FROM tv
- 14:48Speaker 1: and being a lot Of state farm ads but actually
- 14:50Speaker 1: isn't really well liked in THE nba. Community. Yeah and
- 14:54Speaker 1: WHEN i was a, kid it Was jordan. Obviously. Yeah
- 14:57Speaker 1: and if a really good example Of jordan getting away
- 15:00Speaker 1: with a huge foul and a huge moment is his
- 15:03Speaker 1: final shot with The Chicago bulls when they win that
- 15:07Speaker 1: SIXTH Nba. Championship he just Pushes Brian russell out of the.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Way there's and the announcer, goes Oh russell. Slipped it's, like,
- 15:17Speaker 1: no he got shoved in the, ass My Michael, jordan,
- 15:21Speaker 1: Forcibly it's a bit human, nature, right like you, know
- 15:24Speaker 1: if you have let's let's put this. In let's make
- 15:28Speaker 1: this an example we could all think. OF i, mean
- 15:30Speaker 1: you don't know my, brother but my Brother ethan is,
- 15:33Speaker 1: like just not the favorite. Son i'm the favorite. Son i'm.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Sorry ethan knows. This ethan AND i are. Bros but,
- 15:40Speaker 1: hey but ANYTIME i do, anything my, parents my, Grandparents
- 15:45Speaker 1: god rest their, soul are, like Oh, brett how? Cool
- 15:50Speaker 1: well what a cool. Thing and then the moment my
- 15:52Speaker 1: brother talks, like oh Shot, ethan it's just like And
- 15:57Speaker 1: ethan AND i could do the same, thing and it's, like,
- 15:59Speaker 1: oh good, Job, Brett oh you're so, smart and they
- 16:03Speaker 1: just hate Whenever ethan does. That it's just it's a
- 16:07Speaker 1: bit of, like, well we Want Michael jordan to, win
- 16:09Speaker 1: and we don't Want John, stock we don't want The
- 16:14Speaker 1: Utah jazz to. Win like, yeah AND i was always
- 16:19Speaker 1: as a, KID i always hated The Western, Conference LIKE i,
- 16:22Speaker 1: thought aside from The, lakers The Western conference was just a,
- 16:25Speaker 1: boring fucking. Conference To, YEAH i wasn't super up on the. During,
- 16:33Speaker 1: yeah The, spurs, well The spurs kind of suck like.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Eh then as someone who watches a lot more, basketball
- 16:38Speaker 1: now there's some The spurs are The spurs are like. Boring,
- 16:44Speaker 1: yeah The spurs are like are a bit like The
- 16:46Speaker 1: patriots a bit where they're like, there it's automatic that
- 16:50Speaker 1: they'll be there every, year and it's like actually quite
- 16:53Speaker 1: boring and. Monolithic, Right fuck The. Spurs but, today so
- 16:58Speaker 1: today we're talking about the the eighty five draft, lottery
- 17:02Speaker 1: which was the first time THE nba ever handled their
- 17:05Speaker 1: draft in this, way which is an interesting. Thing and
- 17:10Speaker 1: the the argument is that THE nba rigged this draft
- 17:15Speaker 1: lottery So Patrick ewing would go To New York Patrick,
- 17:19Speaker 1: ewing you, know in nineteen eighty five coming out Of Georgetown,
- 17:23Speaker 1: University big. Center IF i, mean he's one of the
- 17:26Speaker 1: more famous basketball players of the eighties and. Nineties he's
- 17:28Speaker 1: really really. Good he ended up having a great career
- 17:31Speaker 1: despite not winning a. Championship, Right but it happens at
- 17:35Speaker 1: the time he was coming out of, college people assumed
- 17:38Speaker 1: he was going to be like the Next Bill, Russell,
- 17:41Speaker 1: yeah something like he, was and he kind of, was
- 17:44Speaker 1: but he. Didn't he just never won a. Championship and
- 17:47Speaker 1: what we were just saying about THE nba needing a
- 17:51Speaker 1: team in a major market to be playing well really
- 17:55Speaker 1: applied to The knicks at the, time because they were
- 17:57Speaker 1: great in the late sixties and, seventies they won a
- 17:59Speaker 1: couple champions, chips and then they just sucked for fourteen solid. Years,
- 18:03Speaker 1: yeah like they were terrible for a long. Time and their,
- 18:08Speaker 1: tickets like they used to sell Out Madison Square garden
- 18:11Speaker 1: all the, time their ticket sales, dropped people stopped, watching
- 18:14Speaker 1: and THE nbas was making less, money and at the
- 18:18Speaker 1: end of the eighty six, season their television contract was coming,
- 18:22Speaker 1: up so they needed something good to happen In New
- 18:27Speaker 1: york to get. More THE tv contracts are how all
- 18:29Speaker 1: these leagues make tons and tons of. Money so AND
- 18:32Speaker 1: i think it's twenty twenty one when the NFL's contracts are.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Up this is. How this is how all THE afc
- 18:38Speaker 1: games are ON cbs and all THE nfc games are On.
- 18:40Speaker 1: Fox that's all sort of decided every four or five.
- 18:43Speaker 1: Years but THESE tv contracts that THESE tv networks played
- 18:47Speaker 1: literally billions and billions of dollars to the league for
- 18:50Speaker 1: the right to have you, know certain, games and with,
- 18:53Speaker 1: BASKETBALL abc has the rights, now so they paid billions
- 18:56Speaker 1: and billions of dollars, literally, yeah capital b bills to
- 19:00Speaker 1: the league for the rights to air those. Games so
- 19:03Speaker 1: it's a big it's a big, deal right and the
- 19:07Speaker 1: so THE nba at the time had a lot of
- 19:10Speaker 1: motive to fix this. Draft they had their, popularity like
- 19:14Speaker 1: they they Got THE nba got really popular again in the,
- 19:17Speaker 1: eighties but it was the late. Eighties it was before,
- 19:20Speaker 1: yeah it was you, know that was More jordan and
- 19:22Speaker 1: The pistons in the late. Eighties but this we're talking
- 19:25Speaker 1: nineteen eighty, four eighty, five sort Of Magic bird. Era,
- 19:29Speaker 1: yeah it's it's, popular but it's kind of only but
- 19:32Speaker 1: it's really popular For celtics And lakers. Fans it's population
- 19:35Speaker 1: In massachusetts and Southern, california, Right, Yeah AND i watched
- 19:39Speaker 1: a lot of it because my dad was for some
- 19:41Speaker 1: reason A lakers. Fan but beyond, THAT i didn't, LIKE
- 19:44Speaker 1: i didn't give a shit about THE nba at this. Time.
- 19:46Speaker 1: EITHER i MEAN i was a young, kid BUT i
- 19:48Speaker 1: watched a lot of, sports and they also had a
- 19:52Speaker 1: huge cocaine. Problem like EVERY i mean the, eighties every,
- 19:57Speaker 1: sport every sport, HAD i, mean every industry had a cook.
- 20:00Speaker 1: Problem but their players were being really vocal about, it
- 20:03Speaker 1: like doing. Interviews there was AN La times report that
- 20:08Speaker 1: estimated that between forty to seventy five percent of players
- 20:11Speaker 1: were using. Cocaine so on the conservative, side a little
- 20:15Speaker 1: bit less than half of them were just doing cocaine
- 20:17Speaker 1: right all the. Time and that, finally the Len bias
- 20:21Speaker 1: thing happened after this draft, lottery so Len bias just you,
- 20:25Speaker 1: know some more. CONTACTS a year, later The celtics draft
- 20:27Speaker 1: this guy Lent, bias who who is drafted COMING i
- 20:31Speaker 1: forgot what? School he's coming out Of, maryland young, Guy
- 20:35Speaker 1: so you, know twenty twenty two something like, that and
- 20:38Speaker 1: between the draft and the beginning of the, season dies
- 20:41Speaker 1: of a cocaine. Overdime he died that. Night oh he
- 20:44Speaker 1: died that. Night, YEAH i WAS i wasn't born, yet
- 20:46Speaker 1: so it's all, Right, yeah he died the things technically
- 20:48Speaker 1: the next, day but it was like two or three
- 20:50Speaker 1: in the, Morrow, Okay And this was right when the
- 20:52Speaker 1: crack epidemic was, Starting and, yeah the len bias, thing
- 20:56Speaker 1: it wrecked The celtics because The celtics traded away a
- 21:00Speaker 1: bunch of picks to get len bias and then they
- 21:04Speaker 1: draft him and he died that night of a. Cocaine
- 21:06Speaker 1: we'll talk a little bit later about the mechanics of
- 21:09Speaker 1: how someone wins the. Draft but you don't win the draft.
- 21:12Speaker 1: There you don't win the draft lottery every year getting
- 21:14Speaker 1: the first getting you, know, right one of these high.
- 21:17Speaker 1: Picks so for that pick to, die it's not like
- 21:19Speaker 1: they can award. Them oh you can go next. Year, no,
- 21:22Speaker 1: sorry the guy, died like, sorry that's. Horrible, yeah don't
- 21:25Speaker 1: do so much. Cocaine, yeah he should have done a little. Less.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Yeah we haven't talked about the way the draft worked before. This. Yeah,
- 21:34Speaker 1: previously if you wanted the first pick in the, draft
- 21:38Speaker 1: you had to be one of the two worst teams
- 21:40Speaker 1: in the league and then you had to win a coin.
- 21:42Speaker 1: Flip that's. It if you had the worst or second worst,
- 21:47Speaker 1: record you had a fifty percent chance of getting the
- 21:50Speaker 1: number one draft. Pick, yeah and they decided to change
- 21:54Speaker 1: it in eighty five for some. Reason, yeah for some
- 21:58Speaker 1: reason they decide in nineteen eighty five that it should
- 22:02Speaker 1: be seven teams competing for the number one. Pick well
- 22:06Speaker 1: that's because if they didn't change, it who would have
- 22:10Speaker 1: been the two teams competing for the number? One, Okay
- 22:13Speaker 1: Golden State warriors and The Indiana. Pacers So San francisco Or. Indiana,
- 22:17Speaker 1: Yeah and at this, time The Golden State warriors were
- 22:20Speaker 1: not what they are. Now they were a fucking they
- 22:22Speaker 1: were a league team. BASE i mean they had they
- 22:26Speaker 1: won some CHAMPIONSHIPS i think in the, seventies in the
- 22:28Speaker 1: eighties and nineties and all of the two thousands up
- 22:30Speaker 1: until twenty. Twelve basically they were a trash trash. Tea,
- 22:35Speaker 1: yeah they were The Cleveland browns of The San francisco
- 22:38Speaker 1: right if they if a player went To Golden, STATE
- 22:40Speaker 1: i was just, like, Oh i'll never see them. Again
- 22:43Speaker 1: they were just like so forgettable that the whole franchise
- 22:45Speaker 1: was for thirty. Years. Yeah so THE nba didn't want.
- 22:49Speaker 1: That they did not Want Patrick ewing ending up In
- 22:52Speaker 1: indiana Or Golden, State, Oakland San. Francisco. Whatever but the
- 22:58Speaker 1: other argument was that the old system encouraged teams to
- 23:02Speaker 1: just tank the entire season to get that number one.
- 23:06Speaker 1: Pick the problem is that never stopped like after they
- 23:09Speaker 1: changed it that The spurs did. It The spurs did
- 23:12Speaker 1: it to Get David robinson And Tim. Duncan, yeah so you,
- 23:14Speaker 1: know to just kind of zoom out a. Bit they
- 23:17Speaker 1: changed this from this this thing of the two worst
- 23:20Speaker 1: teams will flip a coin and they'll get the one
- 23:22Speaker 1: and two picks to for the first time in the
- 23:25Speaker 1: eighty five. Draft all, right seven teams and we'll have
- 23:27Speaker 1: a lottery to determine it right now to right, now
- 23:30Speaker 1: it's fourteen, teams the worst. Fourteenth every team that doesn't
- 23:33Speaker 1: make the, playoffs which is fourteen teams. Enters there's a
- 23:37Speaker 1: there's a. Lottery it's a little bit more statistically, us
- 23:40Speaker 1: it's a little bit harder to, fix and there's some,
- 23:42Speaker 1: right it's a it's a bit different than how they
- 23:45Speaker 1: did the lottery this. Time the lottery this time was
- 23:48Speaker 1: like literally like sticking your hand in a. Ball it was.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Shady it was just very. Exactly and they still. Can't
- 23:54Speaker 1: so now they've gone from two teams to seven teams
- 23:57Speaker 1: to fourteen teams and they can't fix the tanking and
- 24:00Speaker 1: the angle of, well we're not really gonna be good this,
- 24:03Speaker 1: Year so why don't we try to be really bad
- 24:04Speaker 1: so we have the highest chance of getting this number one. Pick,
- 24:07Speaker 1: LISTEN i don't know if you can get rid of.
- 24:09Speaker 1: It this is a bigger this is a bigger conversation
- 24:12Speaker 1: that we don't have to talk about right. Here but
- 24:15Speaker 1: this is gonna happen every. Year THE nfl has a similar.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Thing the team with the worst the worst, record gets
- 24:22Speaker 1: the number one pick in the. Draft, yeah but we
- 24:25Speaker 1: don't see the tanking as much because there's only sixteen.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Games like it's, like, yeah and you're gonna. Lose you're
- 24:32Speaker 1: gonna lose the games that you're supposed to. Lose in
- 24:34Speaker 1: THE nfl rather than, basketball is a little bit closer to.
- 24:38Speaker 1: Baseball it's a little bit more of a coin flip every,
- 24:40Speaker 1: night not, ever not every. NIGHT i, mean the The
- 24:43Speaker 1: Atlanta hawks playing The Golden State warriors are gonna The
- 24:46Speaker 1: warriors of. Today The warriors are gonna win most most
- 24:49Speaker 1: of the, time but they. Lose they might lose one
- 24:51Speaker 1: or two games just out of the sort of variance
- 24:54Speaker 1: of night tonight. Basketball SO i don't know if you
- 24:57Speaker 1: can get rid of, tanking like unless you come up
- 24:59Speaker 1: with some thing. Different the more the more incentive you
- 25:02Speaker 1: have to get this this, prize at the, end you're
- 25:05Speaker 1: gonna take advantage of, that, Right so The philadelphia seventy
- 25:08Speaker 1: six ers take advantage of. That AND i think they're
- 25:10Speaker 1: going to try and move in the next few years
- 25:12Speaker 1: to something to prevent tanking where if you get a
- 25:15Speaker 1: top three, pick you can't get another top three pick
- 25:19Speaker 1: for like another year or. Two so even if you're
- 25:21Speaker 1: the worst team in the league and you win the,
- 25:23Speaker 1: lottery you'll just get picked number. Four so, OH i
- 25:26Speaker 1: think that's how they're trying to curb. It but when
- 25:29Speaker 1: you play eighty when you play eighty two games the
- 25:31Speaker 1: season and you, suck you're just gonna keep. Losing, yeah
- 25:35Speaker 1: that's that's the end of my pretty. Much and so,
- 25:38Speaker 1: yeah they ostensibly the goal here was to stop teams
- 25:42Speaker 1: from doing, that but they just really the goal was
- 25:45Speaker 1: Get Patrick ewing to, Me, yeah but, really what happens
- 25:49Speaker 1: is now seven now seven to ten teams are competing
- 25:52Speaker 1: for those seven, spots, right and they wanted to get
- 25:55Speaker 1: some some. Bigger they wanted to get The, knicks, yeah
- 25:58Speaker 1: involved in that, lottery, Right and so they decide to
- 26:03Speaker 1: change the draft to a system where it's almost like
- 26:06Speaker 1: if you've ever watched the lottery drawings on, television there's
- 26:11Speaker 1: a big. Bowl it's less than. That it's like bingo
- 26:15Speaker 1: at the local retirement at. Home because that the states
- 26:18Speaker 1: have to with the state, lottery they have to be
- 26:20Speaker 1: some sort of transparency behind. It because Out california is
- 26:24Speaker 1: fixing the lottery for some friend of the comptroller or,
- 26:28Speaker 1: whatever then that's not gonna be a good look For
- 26:31Speaker 1: california Or illinois or. Whatever. Yeah this they just threw
- 26:35Speaker 1: a bunch of envelopes and a big what they do, now.
- 26:38Speaker 1: Drum there's fourteen. Teams there's fourteen teams that are eligible
- 26:41Speaker 1: for the. Lottery each team has a different statistical chance
- 26:45Speaker 1: of winning the. Lottery the team with the worst record has,
- 26:48Speaker 1: LIKE i, think a twenty five percent chance of winning the.
- 26:50Speaker 1: Lottery and they literally put like they don't put. It
- 26:53Speaker 1: they put like a hundred balls in, there and they
- 26:56Speaker 1: assign each team certain sets of. Numbers, so for, example
- 27:01Speaker 1: who had the best chance of winning the lottery last?
- 27:03Speaker 1: Year it was This Phoenix SUNS i think, right, yeah
- 27:06Speaker 1: probably they were assigned numbers like zero, zero, zero one through, two,
- 27:11Speaker 1: five zero, zero, literally so they literally just draw out
- 27:14Speaker 1: the numbers and, Write, okay we have number, four six nine, Seven,
- 27:18Speaker 1: yeah that's tied to The Detroit. Pistons The Detroit pistons
- 27:21Speaker 1: have one rather than this, time they literally put seven
- 27:24Speaker 1: envelopes in a big, ball like big clear ball that
- 27:27Speaker 1: anyone could see into like you would playing, bingo, right
- 27:32Speaker 1: and they just spun it around a couple times like
- 27:34Speaker 1: they're out of fucking county. Fair, yeah if you want
- 27:37Speaker 1: to watch the video that a lot of what we're
- 27:40Speaker 1: talking about next comes, from it's on. YouTube conveniently, enough
- 27:45Speaker 1: it's called Did David Stern fix the nineteen eighty FIVE Nba?
- 27:48Speaker 1: Draft By Mike corzemba on. YouTube it has like a
- 27:52Speaker 1: million some. Views it's a short video, Too it's not
- 27:54Speaker 1: only five or six, pets it's it's very, digestible more
- 27:57Speaker 1: digestible than this. Podcast absolutely keep, Listening, yeah, definitely please keep. Listening. Subscribe, so,
- 28:03Speaker 1: yeah so what happens with this draft? Lottery there's this
- 28:09Speaker 1: is basically the subruder film of, basketball because there is
- 28:14Speaker 1: video footage of this, happening and it has been examined
- 28:19Speaker 1: over and over and. Over but what happens is basically
- 28:24Speaker 1: they switch to this draft, lottery and the first weird
- 28:28Speaker 1: part about it is the guy who brings the envelopes,
- 28:30Speaker 1: out a dude Named Jack. Wagner, yeah And Jack wagner
- 28:35Speaker 1: is he's from the accounting firm Of ernst And, whitney
- 28:38Speaker 1: which is what we always, hear like anytime an impartial
- 28:43Speaker 1: person has to bring, something it's always an accounting. Firm.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Yeah cut to The oscars two years, ago Oh, Man moonlight. Drama,
- 28:52Speaker 1: yeah so seemingly he is a neutral third, party but
- 28:57Speaker 1: he Also ernst And whitney was the auditing firm For
- 29:02Speaker 1: gulf And Western, incorporated who owned The New York knicks
- 29:06Speaker 1: at the. Time so that part's. Weird, well as we,
- 29:09Speaker 1: know In New York city there's only one accounting company
- 29:11Speaker 1: firm and It's Earnstant. Whitney did we know. That, no
- 29:14Speaker 1: it's a. Joe, no it's a. Joke It's New. York
- 29:16Speaker 1: there's tons of tons of big high level investment banks
- 29:20Speaker 1: and accounting firms and all sorts of you lived. THERE
- 29:22Speaker 1: i didn't know if you had it, later no one
- 29:25Speaker 1: with any other Account uh so what's really? Weird and
- 29:32Speaker 1: will Watch let's let's just WATCH i, mean the people
- 29:35Speaker 1: at home will have to fire up this video and
- 29:38Speaker 1: watch with. Us it starts around the three minute and
- 29:42Speaker 1: forty four second or point is when they start talking
- 29:47Speaker 1: about the actual depositing of the. Envelopes. Right, so this,
- 29:51Speaker 1: Guy Jack, wagner who works for the accounting firm that
- 29:53Speaker 1: has ties to the company that owns owns The, micks
- 29:57Speaker 1: comes out onto the stage and they had this big
- 29:59Speaker 1: glass or plastic, ball and he throws their seven. Envelopes
- 30:03Speaker 1: he throws the envelopes into the. Ball, Right so this
- 30:06Speaker 1: is where we're at and take it Away internet.
- 30:09Speaker 4: Video As wagner tosses the envelopes into the plastic, ball
- 30:14Speaker 4: he presents the first piece of evidence that the draft was.
- 30:17Speaker 4: Rigged look closely as he bangs the fourth, envelope which
- 30:20Speaker 4: contained The New York knicks draft, card against the middle
- 30:23Speaker 4: of the plastic.
- 30:24Speaker 1: Ball as he's not even subtle about. It, Okay so
- 30:29Speaker 1: he tosses like three or. Four there's seven. Envelopes he
- 30:32Speaker 1: tosses like three in and there's sort of an axle
- 30:35Speaker 1: in the middle of the, ball and he tosses three
- 30:39Speaker 1: in without a. Problem and then on the fourth, one
- 30:43Speaker 1: he just like smashes the envelope up against the axle
- 30:47Speaker 1: like he clearly has the motion. Right and then after
- 30:51Speaker 1: he drops this now kind of crumpled and folded envelope
- 30:55Speaker 1: into the, ball he then for the other three envelopes
- 31:00Speaker 1: tosses them in completely normally and doesn't smash them in
- 31:03Speaker 1: this axle in the middle of the. Ball and another
- 31:06Speaker 1: good question to ask about how he does it also
- 31:08Speaker 1: is if you're gonna spin the thing and mix him,
- 31:11Speaker 1: up why not just toss them all in at. Once
- 31:13Speaker 1: why did they have to go in like you're dealing?
- 31:15Speaker 1: Cards maybe ONLY i don't, know and That so the
- 31:19Speaker 1: argument here is that he basically to prove that there's,
- 31:22Speaker 1: seven just as a you, know, yeah to prove that
- 31:25Speaker 1: there are seven, Envelopes come, on. Man so the argument
- 31:28Speaker 1: here is that he basically bends the corner of this
- 31:31Speaker 1: envelope So David stern can see, it, yeah and will
- 31:36Speaker 1: know which envelope contains The knicks. Card so they win
- 31:40Speaker 1: the draft and the.
- 31:43Speaker 2: Envelope falls into the.
- 31:44Speaker 4: Ball if we freeze, time we can see that the
- 31:47Speaker 4: corner of the envelope is now.
- 31:49Speaker 1: Bent what's funny about that part IS i cannot see
- 31:53Speaker 1: that it's bent in that. Clip no that he. Showed
- 31:56Speaker 1: this clip is not very good because it's like this
- 32:00Speaker 1: A vhs. Transfer this is like SOME espn, right like you,
- 32:05Speaker 1: know airing of this from nineteen eighty. Five the cameras
- 32:07Speaker 1: aren't as. Good they don't HAVE. HD i can't tell from,
- 32:09Speaker 1: this but the next the next, clip but the next
- 32:12Speaker 1: shot actually shows it really. Clearly and so that's the
- 32:16Speaker 1: that's the first part is this guy throwing this envelope
- 32:21Speaker 1: in and bending the. Corner that's where the physical part
- 32:25Speaker 1: of this conspiracy. Starts and so the next part Is David.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Stern AND i think the video here makes a really great.
- 32:34Speaker 2: Point hardly anything suspicious about.
- 32:37Speaker 1: This As, Yeah David stern is the. Head, yeah well,
- 32:41Speaker 1: yeah he's he's the, commissioner commissioner of the end of the,
- 32:44Speaker 1: league and he's actually going to be the one who
- 32:46Speaker 1: sticks his hand in and pulls out the, cards, Right
- 32:49Speaker 1: and here's the ball is.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Rotated As stern looks intently at.
- 32:53Speaker 1: The, envelope he does not take his eyes.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Off.
- 32:57Speaker 4: Ready to select the envelope that will give the team
- 32:59Speaker 4: inside the first pick in the. Draft as he prepares,
- 33:02Speaker 4: Himself stern lets out a very deep.
- 33:05Speaker 1: Breath why did he do. THAT i don't. KNOW i, Can't,
- 33:11Speaker 1: LIKE i can't prove anything of that in a court of. Law,
- 33:14Speaker 1: YEAH i, MEAN i am you can't a big city,
- 33:16Speaker 1: lawyer but you can't prove anything in the court of.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Law but this should this is the first time THE
- 33:21Speaker 1: nba has ever built this contraption to fuck around with
- 33:24Speaker 1: on draft, Day like this should be a very lighthearted
- 33:28Speaker 1: moment For David. Stern and he looks. Petrified he does
- 33:33Speaker 1: look a bit like if he selects the wrong, one
- 33:36Speaker 1: like his family's can be. Murdered he. Does, yeah that's
- 33:39Speaker 1: what the side is sort of reminiscent. Of BUT i
- 33:43Speaker 1: can't say. That, YEAH i mean it MEANS i. Do
- 33:45Speaker 1: can't say that it means. Anything IT'S i think that's
- 33:48Speaker 1: the least of of the of the pieces of evidence. Here,
- 33:52Speaker 1: YEAH i, mean it's it admissible in my, Court Judge
- 33:56Speaker 1: Joe brown over, here let's go on.
- 33:59Speaker 2: Hotly indicating that he is.
- 34:00Speaker 4: Nervous is he nervous about being in front of a
- 34:02Speaker 4: lot of, people something he's probably never faced as commissioner
- 34:06Speaker 4: of THE.
- 34:06Speaker 1: Nba that was, sarcasm.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Folks nervous about something else.
- 34:11Speaker 1: Like having his kneecaps broken by the mafia If patrick ewing.
- 34:18Speaker 4: The. Hood the next few seconds cements the nineteen eighty
- 34:21Speaker 4: five draft lottery as one.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Of the NBA's biggest.
- 34:24Speaker 4: Conspiracies As stern reaches into the plastic, ball we are
- 34:27Speaker 4: going to.
- 34:28Speaker 2: Freeze as the camera clear.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Now, here you really see that bent. Corner it's. Bent it's, bent,
- 34:35Speaker 1: baby it's very obviously ben Get billy picks up the bent.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Corner on the envelope that contains The knicks.
- 34:41Speaker 4: Pick, surely if we can see the bend now on
- 34:44Speaker 4: a video that is from nineteen eighty, five Presumably stern
- 34:48Speaker 4: can see it in real.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Life.
- 34:49Speaker 4: Now As stern reaches into the, ball he clearly grabs
- 34:52Speaker 4: multiple envelopes as another envelope has landed on top of
- 34:56Speaker 4: The knicks. Envelope he, then for some, reason lips the
- 35:00Speaker 4: envelope is grabbed around before dropping all but one see
- 35:04Speaker 4: one with the, quarter the one that gave The knicks
- 35:07Speaker 4: the first pick in the nineteen eighty five.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Draft and so there you have.
- 35:10Speaker 1: It so there you have. It so there you have.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It it's more convincing if you watch the video, yourself
- 35:16Speaker 1: probably than Just brett AND i trying to explain this
- 35:20Speaker 1: to you if you are the commissioner of a fantasy
- 35:25Speaker 1: football league or AT i don't know how you do,
- 35:28Speaker 1: it but my league does. It we literally all put
- 35:30Speaker 1: fucking our names in a hat and someone throws everyone
- 35:34Speaker 1: just rips up a piece of. Paper if you are
- 35:36Speaker 1: just picking randomly out of a hat and you really
- 35:38Speaker 1: don't care about the, outcome or you understand the outcome
- 35:41Speaker 1: to be truly, neutral what you do is you Quarter
- 35:44Speaker 1: you sort of a normal human sticks their hand, in
- 35:47Speaker 1: doesn't even, look and just sort of wishes the right
- 35:49Speaker 1: hand around once the hand is in there too to
- 35:52Speaker 1: not only has it been spun around by the ball
- 35:54Speaker 1: or the hat or, whatever But i'm gonna make it
- 35:56Speaker 1: even more random by just sort of shaking my hand
- 35:59Speaker 1: inside of their having the name that Says, brett you're
- 36:01Speaker 1: the first pick of the. Draft he has his eyes
- 36:05Speaker 1: laser focused on the bent envelope the entire time he
- 36:09Speaker 1: sticks his hand. In there is an envelope on top
- 36:12Speaker 1: of the bent. Envelope he reaches his hand to avoid
- 36:16Speaker 1: the envelope on top of the bent envelope and flips
- 36:19Speaker 1: it and picks out the bent. ONE i didn't even
- 36:22Speaker 1: know about the whole bent envelope. Theory there had been this,
- 36:24Speaker 1: thing this rumor as well that there's no way to
- 36:27Speaker 1: prove that this Guy wagner From ernst And whitney had
- 36:31Speaker 1: put The nick's envelope in a freezer like all day
- 36:36Speaker 1: and that so when Stern tuck put his hand, in
- 36:39Speaker 1: there would be a cold, envelope, right and it could
- 36:41Speaker 1: have been a combination of. It Could there's no way
- 36:43Speaker 1: to prove, that, Right So i'd only heard about the
- 36:46Speaker 1: frozen envelope theory is that the envelope had been in
- 36:49Speaker 1: a fridge or a freezer all day and then it
- 36:52Speaker 1: was added to the. Ball but this is really actually
- 36:57Speaker 1: more convincing than the Frozen. YEAH i think it is really.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Convincing and the thing about it in the book we
- 37:03Speaker 1: mentioned at the top of the episode that writer includes
- 37:08Speaker 1: A i won't read the whole, thing but he includes
- 37:12Speaker 1: a snippet from an article written in The Dallas Morning
- 37:15Speaker 1: news the next day by a writer Named Randy, galloway
- 37:19Speaker 1: and this writer basically, Says. Yeah in the weeks leading
- 37:23Speaker 1: up to the, draft everyone was, like The knicks are
- 37:26Speaker 1: gonna Get Patrick ewing and THE nba is gonna make
- 37:28Speaker 1: sure The knicks Get Patrick. Ewing and then then draft
- 37:32Speaker 1: happens and The knicks Get Patrick ewing and this guy's just,
- 37:35Speaker 1: like you, know we can't prove, it but it seems.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Fishy so this was immediately upon when this, happened people were,
- 37:43Speaker 1: like that's. Weird not even immediately weeks before people knew.
- 37:47Speaker 1: That the combination of the teams in the, draft it
- 37:50Speaker 1: was like THE La, Clippers yeah they're FROM, la but who, Cares,
- 37:54Speaker 1: Indiana Golden, state a few other just just real suck
- 38:00Speaker 1: sucker teams they were in, there and everyone before the
- 38:02Speaker 1: draft was, like, oh, YEAH i wonder How New york's
- 38:04Speaker 1: gonna win this. ONE i wonder how that's gonna. Happen
- 38:07Speaker 1: but it's gonna. Happen they knew that this was going to,
- 38:09Speaker 1: Happen so then what did it? Confirmed The it confirmed
- 38:12Speaker 1: the whole, thing, Right and a lot of times when
- 38:15Speaker 1: there's a conspiracy, theory people look to the result and they're, like,
- 38:18Speaker 1: well what they wanted to happen didn't, happen so that
- 38:22Speaker 1: it's it's not. True and in this, case you, know
- 38:25Speaker 1: the next winning a championship didn't, happen But Patrick ewing
- 38:28Speaker 1: absolutely turned that team. Around, yeah just, yeah THEY i
- 38:32Speaker 1: think they they went to ONE nba finals or was
- 38:36Speaker 1: that even on the team in ninety? Nine uh, yeah
- 38:40Speaker 1: he went for THE nba, finals the ones where they
- 38:42Speaker 1: the one where they played The, Heat, NO i think,
- 38:43Speaker 1: right you know that they lost to The. Spurs it
- 38:45Speaker 1: was a it was A i think it was ninety
- 38:48Speaker 1: nine was when this uh yeah short because of a
- 38:51Speaker 1: strike forty eight hours after the. Draft the next got
- 38:54Speaker 1: a thousand season ticket. Requests back in the day when
- 38:57Speaker 1: you had to call a motherfucker to do, it called ticket. Tron,
- 39:00Speaker 1: yeah THE, nba they obviously renewed their deal WITH. Cbs
- 39:05Speaker 1: ewing WON Nba rookie of The. YEAR i didn't realize.
- 39:08Speaker 1: This he took them to thirteen consecutive playoff. Appearance, yeah
- 39:12Speaker 1: they were. Good they were good for the. Nineties they
- 39:14Speaker 1: didn't win a. CHAMPIONSHIP i, mean when you're playing The
- 39:16Speaker 1: bulls in the playoffs every year With Michael, jordan that's
- 39:19Speaker 1: gonna it's not gonna be, great, Right it's not gonna
- 39:22Speaker 1: be great for your for your. Odds but like they they.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Were they were a contender that were in the mix
- 39:27Speaker 1: for the next fifteen. Years. Yeah, yeah and he they
- 39:30Speaker 1: they kind of just ran Into Michael jordan and we're
- 39:33Speaker 1: talking On actually it'll be up by the time people hear.
- 39:37Speaker 1: This but me And brett have a sports, podcast an
- 39:40Speaker 1: unnamed sports podcast as of, now and we talk About
- 39:43Speaker 1: Lebron james on the inaugural, Episode Bron, james Le Bron.
- 39:48Speaker 1: JAMES i love. That fucking kids the Best and that's
- 39:52Speaker 1: kind of what happened To lebron early in his. Career
- 39:55Speaker 1: is he that he was Taking cleveland to the, finals
- 39:59Speaker 1: into the semi finals and just always running up against
- 40:03Speaker 1: some really fucking great team like The. Celtics celtics at the.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Time in The, Spurs, yeah but Still Patrick ewing took
- 40:11Speaker 1: them to thirteen straight playoff appearances TO Nba. Finals by
- 40:15Speaker 1: the time he left The, knicks they had a streak
- 40:18Speaker 1: of three hundred and forty seven consecutive sellout games At
- 40:23Speaker 1: Madison Square garden during his fifteen seasons with the. Team in,
- 40:27Speaker 1: total they had three hundred and ninety four. Sellouts the
- 40:30Speaker 1: thirty nine years prior to him joining The, knicks the
- 40:32Speaker 1: team only had two hundred and five. SELLOUTS i don't
- 40:35Speaker 1: believe sellout. Data no sellout data is don't believe anytime anyone's, like, oh,
- 40:40Speaker 1: yeah we've sold out this Many, yeah because a lot
- 40:43Speaker 1: of time selling. It because, basically what can happen before
- 40:46Speaker 1: a game or what does happen anytime these, TEAMS i
- 40:49Speaker 1: think The Red sox have had like consecutive sellouts for
- 40:52Speaker 1: like for like eighty years or something that right just.
- 40:55Speaker 1: Ended what happens at the end of the game is
- 40:57Speaker 1: the ticket office is, like all, right we have three
- 40:59Speaker 1: hundred two gets. Left what do we. Do, oh let's
- 41:02Speaker 1: give them to a, charity, Okay and you literally just
- 41:06Speaker 1: drop them off at the door of like a charity
- 41:08Speaker 1: right three hours before the game, starts and, like, yeah
- 41:10Speaker 1: you guys can show up or whatever or say that
- 41:13Speaker 1: you did and just throw the tickets in the trash right.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Right so that's And i've worked in ticketing, Before i've
- 41:21Speaker 1: lived In New york And i've worked In broadway. Ticketing
- 41:24Speaker 1: that's what happens when you want to maintain a sellout
- 41:27Speaker 1: or give the appearance of a, sellout is you just
- 41:29Speaker 1: you print the, tickets you comp, them and then you
- 41:32Speaker 1: literally throw them in the trash or you just give
- 41:34Speaker 1: them or you literally give them away to people right for,
- 41:37Speaker 1: free so that it is sold. Out it's just that
- 41:40Speaker 1: a thousand of the seats were comped and you gave
- 41:43Speaker 1: them away on the street or in the trash. Can,
- 41:46Speaker 1: yeah but it he. Did he did turn things. Around,
- 41:49Speaker 1: yeah like For New. York. Definitely they just didn't win
- 41:52Speaker 1: a championship Because jordan's the greatest of all. Time that's.
- 41:56Speaker 1: All so that's the that's The KNICKS Nba draft lottery.
- 42:00Speaker 1: Conspiracy i'm more convinced THAN i was two days. Ago,
- 42:04Speaker 1: YEAH i buy this one for. SURE i never saw

- 42:12Speaker 1: like can't, Prove, yeah you can't prove whether this one
- 42:14Speaker 1: guy who was like alone with the envelopes all day
- 42:17Speaker 1: but one of them met a. FRIDGE i don't know
- 42:19Speaker 1: how funny would it be if he forgot to bring
- 42:21Speaker 1: it with. Him what if he's still at home in his.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Freezer what if he accidentally brought out a box of
- 42:27Speaker 1: popsicles instead of The? Knicks that would be. Great these
