- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Friday, it's the last day
- 0:16of October. I'm so grateful that you have
- 0:19carved out this moment in your day as the weekend knocks on the
- 0:24door, beckoning you into hopefully some R&R.
- 0:27Here we are on this last day, ready to open up Proverbs.
- 0:32And as usual, we're going to read through a handful of
- 0:35proverbs, pause, read them again, and then reflect on one
- 0:40of them through prayer. And if you are anything like me,
- 0:44it is hard to unwrap all the goodness of even just this
- 0:48handful of proverbs at the same time.
- 0:50So maybe you might like to come back to it later through the day
- 0:54and unwrap them one at a time, reflecting on them.
- 0:57I'll leave that to you and what your Friday looks like.
- 1:00But for now, Holy Spirit, thank you for this wisdom.
- 1:05Shape us to be more like you, to be more your Kingdom people by
- 1:11what we read today. All right, friends, let's read
- 1:13together Proverbs 1722 to 28. A cheerful heart is good
- 1:29medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength.
- 1:36The wicked takes secret bribes to pervert the course of
- 1:40justice. Sensible people keep their eyes
- 1:46glued on wisdom, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the
- 1:51earth. Foolish children bring grief to
- 1:57their father and bitterness to the one who gave them birth.
- 2:04It is wrong to punish the godly for being good or to flog
- 2:08leaders for being honest. A truly wise person uses few
- 2:16words. A person with understanding is
- 2:19even tempered. Even fools are thought wise when
- 2:25they keep silent with their mouths shut.
- 2:28They seem intelligent. And again, a cheerful heart is
- 2:36good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength.
- 2:43The wicked takes secret bribes to pervert the course of
- 2:46justice. Sensible people keep their eyes
- 2:52glued on wisdom, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the
- 2:57earth. Foolish children bring grief to
- 3:02their father and bitterness to the one who gave them birth.
- 3:09It is wrong to punish the godly for being good or to flog
- 3:13leaders for being honest. A truly wise person uses few
- 3:21words. A person with understanding is
- 3:23even tempered. Even fools are thought wise.
- 3:29When they keep silent with their mouths shut, they seem
- 3:32intelligent. Thank you for this wisdom shared
- 3:47through the ages to us. And the very first proverb in
- 3:51this reading talks about a cheerful heart being good
- 3:54medicine, but a broken spirit sapping a person's strength.
- 4:00My Lord, you know we live in a world that tells us to work
- 4:04harder, to dig deeper, to grit our teeth and get it done.
- 4:12And yes, you are a God who wants us to be productive people.
- 4:15But more than that, you want us to be people who are able to
- 4:19live live gloriously full and rich lives, knowing who we are
- 4:26in You. And how can our response be
- 4:29anything other than joy and gratitude?
- 4:33When we, the beloved children of the living God, stop to reflect
- 4:38on who we are, Our Lord give us grateful, cheerful hearts that
- 4:47as we move through the days, we can do so with the spring in our
- 4:50step and a smile on our face. Knowing, knowing full well that
- 4:56you have won the battle and we are walking through your
- 5:00victory. And that no matter what goes
- 5:04down this day, that you hold us and draw US ever closer to that
- 5:09glorious eternity that we will spend with you.
- 5:15Help us not try to boister our strength with grim
- 5:19determination, but always rest in you the joy and the peace
- 5:25that we can find in your glorious embrace, our wonderful,
- 5:30kind and generous Father. Ah, how grateful we are.
- 5:35Let that always be right here, resting lightly in our hearts,
- 5:42sparing us forward with joy, and dare I say it, with cheer.
- 5:47We love you and we thank you, and we pray all of this in your
- 5:50name, Jesus, Amen.
