- 0:00Hi everyone. Welcome to Mini Scroll, the
- 0:03daily Internet culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories
- 0:07from social media, the creator economy and the digital space
- 0:11every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:15the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:20Welcome back to Mini Scroll everyone.
- 0:23OK, first of all, we got a filter for the mic, so hopefully
- 0:27that will help with some of the mouth sounds if you guys hear
- 0:30those and don't like those. And this is the extent that we
- 0:34can go to for now. So we can't afford to change our
- 0:38studio location, the configuration of it.
- 0:41We can't afford to get anyone in to help with like the sound
- 0:44quality. I know we've had some
- 0:45recommendations of getting like sound engineers and like we just
- 0:48can't afford that. So this is what we can't afford,
- 0:51a pop filter. I hope it helps.
- 0:54The next thing I wanted to say is we had our podcast network
- 0:58launch event party thing on Thursday and it went so well.
- 1:02Thank you guys so much for the well wishes.
- 1:04You guys can see photos of that on Instagram, on my Instagram
- 1:07and on our community tab on YouTube.
- 1:10Obviously, I knew it would all come together.
- 1:13I know that's how it works. I know everything is really
- 1:16stressful until like the minute that it starts and it all comes
- 1:19together. But for real, it was so
- 1:20stressful. Like I can't even tell you.
- 1:22I'm really, really happy and I hope you guys are loving high
- 1:25stakes. I know a lot of you guys are, so
- 1:28please go listen to High Stakes on Spotify, Apple, or on
- 1:31YouTube. If you guys haven't listened
- 1:33yet. The girls are amazing and there
- 1:35will be 10 more weeks of high stakes episodes every Thursday
- 1:39for you guys, so go subscribe. All right, let's get into the
- 1:43stories for today. The first story that I have for
- 1:45you guys. This is kind of niche, but I
- 1:48feel there's like a lesson here for us.
- 1:50So tarot creator Alex Reid's Tarot has been threatened with a
- 1:54lawsuit over an online impersonator.
- 1:57So Alex Reads Tarot is a very popular spiritual creator with
- 2:01nearly 900,000 followers. She's based in Scotland I
- 2:05believe, or at least somewhere in the UK, and she basically
- 2:08does like daily tarot card readings and readings based on
- 2:11Zodiac signs and things like that.
- 2:13OK so a few days ago Alex came online crying saying that she
- 2:17was being threatened with legal action over something she didn't
- 2:21do. A man was threatening to sue her
- 2:24or to take legal action something because his wife was
- 2:27scammed by someone impersonating Alex.
- 2:31And even though it was made clear to him that it was not
- 2:34Alex who had scammed his wife, he was basically saying Alex was
- 2:38at fault because she was being impersonated.
- 2:40And he also said he was going to take this to like the US
- 2:43Constitution, which it doesn't make any sense.
- 2:46It was very clear that this man was like, unhinged, had not
- 2:49sought any legal counsel yet and was just taking out, you know,
- 2:52his frustrations on Alex, Alex's video, which has since been
- 2:56taken down. It was so sad.
- 2:57Like she was crying. She was like, I'm only 22.
- 3:00And obviously she was worried that this was going to
- 3:02basically, like, ruin her whole life.
- 3:04I can't even tell you guys. Like, nothing is worse than
- 3:07legal troubles. Like, it is soul crushing.
- 3:11Anyway, so it's been a few days since then and it seems that she
- 3:14has some legal advice and she's no longer kind of panicked about
- 3:18all of this. Basically, she said she's
- 3:20putting more stuff in place behind the scenes to prevent
- 3:22scammers. But at the end of the day, she
- 3:25was saying that there has to be some onus on the general public
- 3:28or like users in general to do their due diligence before
- 3:31sending people money online. For example, she did a video
- 3:34where you could tell her she was like teaching us how to be able
- 3:37to tell when it's a scammer account versus her account.
- 3:40And like the scammer accounts, you can tell the videos have
- 3:42been downloaded because they have the watermark on them.
- 3:45They're poor quality. They don't have the right e-mail
- 3:48address in the name, like compared to her e-mail address,
- 3:51there are a lot of signs that it's not, you know, actually
- 3:54her. So this is a really common
- 3:57problem in spiritual talk slash like tarot talk and that whole
- 4:01side of the Internet. I'm not kidding.
- 4:04If you follow or engage with one of these accounts and some of
- 4:08their videos, you will all of a sudden be followed by and
- 4:12messaged by their scammer accounts.
- 4:15And they will be like, you know, do you want a private reading or
- 4:18like the cards told me to reach out to you.
- 4:21Spirit guide told me to reach out to you.
- 4:23They have a message for you and basically convince you to pay
- 4:27the money to do like a quote UN quote private reading.
- 4:30And that's why when you are on that side of TikTok, so many
- 4:33those big creators will say, like, I will never reach out to
- 4:35you. This is my only account.
- 4:38You can only find me here. Like message me or like e-mail
- 4:41me here. You know, I don't have any other
- 4:43emails or any other accounts, whatever.
- 4:46It's kind of like the TikTok version of those chainmail
- 4:49emails that we would get where it's like, I'm a Nigerian Prince
- 4:52and I need $10,000. Like stuff like that.
- 4:56It's it's like similar to that. But I think with spiritual talk,
- 4:59I imagine it could be even more predatory because the content
- 5:04already kind of preys on people's vulnerabilities.
- 5:07And like, I know a lot of creators on that side of the
- 5:10Internet aren't doing it with malice.
- 5:12Like, I understand that not everyone who is like reading
- 5:15Tarot on TikTok is trying to be like predatory in their content,
- 5:20but I think people seek out this type of content and engage with
- 5:23this type of content when they are in a vulnerable or bad place
- 5:27because it gives them some hope or guidance, right?
- 5:30And so the scammers who are impersonating these creators and
- 5:33reaching out to these followers, offering private readings or
- 5:36whatever, it's a more vulnerable group of people than the
- 5:41followings of like other types of creators if they were trying
- 5:44to scam, I don't know, like the followers of like acquired style
- 5:47or something. It's just like a different
- 5:49demographic. But that's obviously why these
- 5:51scams are so prevalent on spiritual talk because scammers
- 5:55know that they can actually get something from the followers of
- 5:58these accounts because those people, like I said, are kind of
- 6:01in a vulnerable place sometimes. I do think we will unfortunately
- 6:05start to see this more and more. And I'm interested to hear what
- 6:07you guys think in terms of, like, where the onus lies,
- 6:11because I agree with Alex to an extent that we need to have some
- 6:16more literacy and ownership of like, what we are consuming
- 6:20online and what we're believing and whatever.
- 6:23And like, these creators can't necessarily be held responsible
- 6:25for people impersonating them. But there's also, in my opinion,
- 6:29a bit of onus on the fact that these creators are building
- 6:33massive followings of essentially very vulnerable
- 6:37people. So that inherently might pose
- 6:39some problems for them, regardless if it was like
- 6:42scamming or whatever. I think they're kind of playing
- 6:45with fire like to begin with. OK, the next story that I have
- 6:48for you guys, some more news about Alex's.
- 6:51Alex Cooper has personally addressed Alex Earl and the
- 6:55podcast drama and the Unwell Network and all of that for the
- 6:58first time, the saga that truly never ends.
- 7:02So off the back of one of the high stakes episodes actually
- 7:05that was launched last week on the Alex Cooper Alex Earl Sophia
- 7:08Franklin feuds, there is a new development in Alex Earl leaving
- 7:12the Unwell Network. So last week, Alex Earl posted a
- 7:15TikTok in which she revealed she would be taking a break from her
- 7:18podcast. I have to put a pause on podcast
- 7:20team right now for the foreseeable future.
- 7:23Don't really want to get into the details of it all, and I
- 7:27kind of can't get into the details of it all right now, but
- 7:30I've loved it so, so much and I'm really proud of what I built
- 7:35with the podcast and those of you who come back every week and
- 7:40listen and watch. I love you so much and I don't
- 7:42want to just like leave you astray and not leave you with
- 7:45anything. And I also think I would lose my
- 7:47mind. This LED fans to jump to
- 7:49conclusions that Alex Cooper didn't let Alex Earl walk away
- 7:53with her IP. So the IP for a podcast is
- 7:56basically like your feed, like your RSS feed.
- 7:58I mean, it can include other things too, but you know, the
- 8:01most valuable would be like your back catalog and the actual feed
- 8:05itself so that people don't have to go subscribe somewhere else
- 8:09to hear your podcast. So it would be like the name Hot
- 8:11Mess, like all the back catalog existing episodes, cover arts,
- 8:15like all of that stuff. So Unwell may have owned the IP,
- 8:20the rights to the IP of Hot Mess.
- 8:22So when Alex Earl left Unwell, she may not have been allowed to
- 8:26take the podcast with her basically, and she would have
- 8:28had to start from scratch. That's what people assumed Alex
- 8:31meant. People had a big issue with this
- 8:33because as we know, Alex Cooper's whole thing in the Call
- 8:36Her Daddy saga was that it was so important for her to keep the
- 8:39IP. And that's actually what like
- 8:41essentially broke her and Sophia up is that she highly
- 8:45prioritized the ability to walk away with the IP, whereas Sophia
- 8:48was highly prioritizing a paycheck in the now.
- 8:52But now after being inundated with comments I imagine about
- 8:56the hypocrisy of this all, Alex Cooper made a statement on her
- 8:59Instagram story. Alex said hi I see your
- 9:02comments. Alex not being able to podcast
- 9:04has nothing to do with Unwell. I don't know why she can't slash
- 9:08what's going on. Unwell gave her everything back.
- 9:11She owns her IP, learned from the best and then she tagged
- 9:15Dave Portnoy. As we know Dave Portnoy gave
- 9:18Alex Cooper the IP to call her daddy after fulfilling her
- 9:21contract. So now Alex Earl is doing vlogs.
- 9:24I think that makes more sense for her.
- 9:25Anyways, I have no idea what could be going on with with her
- 9:28podcast, but I think the vlog route makes more sense for her
- 9:31anyway. She's a much better storyteller
- 9:33I think in my opinion in like a visual format.
- 9:37So I wanted to talk about how Chapel Roan said all of her
- 9:41friends who have kids are in hell.
- 9:43So Chapel went on Call Her Daddy last week, and during one
- 9:46question she had quite the controversial take when she
- 9:50spoke about her stance on parenthood.
- 9:51All of my friends who have kids are in hell.
- 9:54I don't know anyone. I actually don't know anyone
- 9:56who's like happy and has children.
- 9:58At this age, OK, so I could come up this from so many angles, but
- 10:04I was really thinking about like this episode would turn into
- 10:08actually 3 hours long if I was to cover everything that I
- 10:11wanted to say. So I'm going to cover it
- 10:13exclusively from like Chapel saying her friends are in hell
- 10:16and like the context of that. So for your information, I am
- 10:20married, I'm 33, I have a dog, I own an apartment.
- 10:24Like I am the target person to be having a child like I am like
- 10:29in theory, like the person who should be having a child like
- 10:33tomorrow. And because of that, I guess so
- 10:35much content related to motherhood and I also get tons
- 10:39of content related to child free women.
- 10:43So Chapel's comments have really turned into this argument online
- 10:49between parents, mostly mothers and child free people, mostly
- 10:54child free women. And already there is so much
- 10:58direction there between those two groups online, like
- 11:00constantly. So now there's this trend where
- 11:03women who are mothers are posting clips with, you know,
- 11:06their kids or whatever, having the best time ever.
- 11:08And they're putting chapels audio over top of it.
- 11:11Or they're doing like a slideshow of photos of them like
- 11:14child free, looking like sad, disheveled, whatever, and then
- 11:18happy when they have their kids. And then the child free people,
- 11:21especially those who make content about this are like, why
- 11:24can't you just admit that being a parent is really hard?
- 11:27Like there's so much negativity around there.
- 11:29Like, you know, we're choosing not to have kids for a reason
- 11:31because we see how hard it is. Whatever.
- 11:33OK, So it's become like this whole thing, but something that
- 11:36I think is missing from actually all of this like chapels take
- 11:39the women who are like motherhood is magical and the
- 11:42child free women who are like, I make this content to show women
- 11:45that they have a choice and they don't need to become mothers and
- 11:48they can have a fulfilling full life without that is the fact
- 11:53that so many women do not have the privilege of realistically
- 12:00not becoming a mother or like not prioritizing getting married
- 12:04and having children. And I don't even mean from like
- 12:07a reproductive rights perspective, but that's
- 12:09obviously also included in this and like a whole other separate
- 12:13conversation. But I just mean like, OK, if I'm
- 12:15going to think about my experience, for example, I
- 12:18actually don't have that many friends that have kids despite
- 12:20being 33 years old. And a huge part of that is
- 12:24because I grew up in a really affluent area.
- 12:28And the women that I know growing up like my friends and
- 12:31also the women like our our mothers and stuff like there was
- 12:34not a priority or a focus on getting married and having
- 12:37children. That was obviously like they're
- 12:39still societal pressure from that.
- 12:41But like in the context of our community, that was actually not
- 12:45really prioritized. Like I was raised and my friends
- 12:49were all raised around women who prioritized education,
- 12:54prioritized, you know, building a career, financial
- 12:57independence, traveling the world, experiencing things,
- 13:00dating lots of people, figuring yourself out and having the
- 13:05privilege to choose if you want to get married, when you want to
- 13:08get married, if you want to have children and who you have those
- 13:11children with, you have the privilege of choosing because
- 13:15you have access to money and resources and education
- 13:18yourself. You have the privilege of
- 13:20choosing a partner who can be 5050 because you have time, you
- 13:25have resources, you have money. So that's something that I think
- 13:29is often missing from this is that for like my friends, I do
- 13:33have children or even for like the mothers that I saw growing
- 13:36up, my own mom, my friends mom's like they were not in hell.
- 13:42But that's because they had access to things that gave them
- 13:46privileges where they had the options to choose, like they
- 13:51could choose how they had children when they had children,
- 13:54what that looked like for them. And so same with my friends that
- 13:58have kids now. Like, I'm sure they're in hell
- 14:00sometimes. I'm sure it is hell.
- 14:02I truly believe that having a child is the hardest thing that
- 14:06anyone can do. Like, I really do believe that
- 14:08to my core. And I believe that they are in
- 14:11hell sometimes. But as a general kind of, you
- 14:14know, blanket statement, no, I do not see a lot of women in my
- 14:18life in hell all the time. Being a mother, I see much more
- 14:23commonly depictions of what I'm seeing on TikTok of these moms
- 14:26like loving their babies and having a great time and having
- 14:29like equal partnership and education and access to
- 14:34resources and help and money and family and like whatever.
- 14:37And that's because of like the socio economic circumstances
- 14:42that we all grew up in and therefore have kind of moved
- 14:45through the world with. Because I think for a lot of
- 14:48women in the world who don't have access to those things and
- 14:51choices like that, you know, motherhood probably is hell.
- 14:55But just because it's hell also doesn't mean that they wouldn't
- 14:59do it again. And I do feel like this is an
- 15:02insane comparison, but I'm going to compare having the business
- 15:07to having a child. OK, Don't come for me, parents.
- 15:10But you know, I look at like entrepreneurship and it is like
- 15:13actually hell. Like, it is like the worst thing
- 15:15I've ever done, but it's also like the best thing I've ever
- 15:18done. And you know, if you asked me
- 15:20about like, if I would ever do it again, even though I have had
- 15:23the lowest moments of my entire life doing it, I would say 100%
- 15:28yes every single time. And if you asked me, should I
- 15:31start my own business, I would kind of be like, Oh, my God.
- 15:35But like, maybe not. But I would also think about all
- 15:38the amazing things that have come from this.
- 15:41And I would be like, yeah, like if you have an itch, scratch it,
- 15:44like chase it because it's going to be worth it.
- 15:48Even if you crash and burn, what happens along the way eventually
- 15:52will be worth it. So there is also complexity.
- 15:55Like, sometimes I find these like, child free accounts or
- 15:58just like women who are child free online talk about like, you
- 16:01know, it's so one-dimensional the way that they look at
- 16:04motherhood. And they say, like, you know,
- 16:07all we hear is negative stories about motherhood.
- 16:08Like, it sounds horrific. And yeah, we do hear a lot of
- 16:11negative stories about motherhood.
- 16:13But at the same time, like, can we not appreciate that it's a
- 16:16much more nuanced, like complex experience than just, you know,
- 16:22this one moment in time? I'm filming a video talking
- 16:24about how being a mother is so hard, but there's so much more
- 16:29underneath the surface that happens.
- 16:31It's probably impossible to describe.
- 16:33Like genuinely, it's probably it's, I find that with the
- 16:35business, I can't even imagine what it's like to have a child.
- 16:37Like, you know, to describe the experience of being an
- 16:40entrepreneur, to describe the experience of parenthood and how
- 16:44complex that is. So I also think it is productive
- 16:48of some of the mothers that are showing off like the most
- 16:52amazing parts of parenthood, motherhood and in this trend or
- 16:56whatever and saying it's like amazing, it's like the best
- 16:58thing I've ever done. But then of course, like I said,
- 17:01I think everybody could use a little bit of like thinking a
- 17:04little bit deeper about this, some critical thinking around
- 17:07the comments that Chapel made based on like where she's from,
- 17:09where her friends that she's like referring to are probably
- 17:12still living. You know, she's quite young
- 17:14still to have children or like for her friends to be having
- 17:17children. So, you know, I think all of
- 17:19that, like cultural context as well is really important when
- 17:22you're thinking about comments that people are making about
- 17:25having children and how hard it is.
- 17:27I've also seen some insane comparisons about people being
- 17:31like, oh, you know, when you say like your job, like being a
- 17:34neurosurgeon was so hard, like I could never do it or whatever,
- 17:37Like really whatever is like a really hard job, I could never
- 17:40do it. And then, you know, you never
- 17:42hear people who are in that job get offended by that.
- 17:45And I understand why people are like comparing those things.
- 17:49It's like, you know, when you say like motherhood seems so
- 17:51hard, like I could never. And then moms get upset and
- 17:54they, you know, start making videos like this and stuff.
- 17:56But like a child is not like a job.
- 17:59Like it's not something you're clocking into.
- 18:01It's not a career. It is, it can be like, of
- 18:05course, being a mother is a job and it is a career, but it's
- 18:07also, you know, nurturing, taking care of teaching, growing
- 18:14like just everything around like a human being.
- 18:17Like it is so much more complex than just comparing it to
- 18:21another job. So it's not a one to one again.
- 18:24And I think it's OK for us to do hard things and complain about
- 18:28doing those hard things and not tell people like, well, this was
- 18:33your choice. Like you did this to yourself.
- 18:35Because like when I think about how sorry now I'm just like on a
- 18:38tangent, you guys, I'm sorry. I didn't want to like tell you
- 18:40all of my thoughts, but if I think about the business,
- 18:44anytime I talk about how difficult it is to my friends,
- 18:46family, whoever, even you guys, all the comments, everything
- 18:49that everyone ever says is like, keep going.
- 18:52You're doing such an amazing job.
- 18:53I know it's hard, but like it's going to pay off whatever.
- 18:56But when moms talk about how difficult it is, a choice they
- 19:00made, just like me, I chose to start this business, a choice
- 19:04they made, they get shit on and told like, well, this is what
- 19:08you signed up for. This is what you chose.
- 19:11Not me out here. Like defending all of the moms
- 19:14right now. I don't even know where I'm
- 19:16going with this. Like my thoughts are so
- 19:17scattered because I'm very impassioned clearly.
- 19:19And yes, I do not think it's helpful when child free people,
- 19:24including myself, talk about how, you know, they're trying to
- 19:27show what life could be like for women if they choose not to have
- 19:31children. Because that is such a small
- 19:33subset of the population of women around the world who
- 19:37realistically have the privilege to make that choice, who are
- 19:41educated enough, affluent enough, you know, don't exist in
- 19:47certain cultures where it's like completely like they'd be
- 19:49completely shunned if they didn't get married and have
- 19:51children, like whatever it is. And so sometimes I also feel
- 19:54like that's really reductive. OK, I need to stop.
- 19:56I need to stop. I don't really have one final
- 19:59point there. Like, I don't know how to tie
- 20:00this all up. I just think.
- 20:03The fighting between these groups of people is so
- 20:07frustrating. I am.
- 20:08So I'm constantly on this side of the Internet because of
- 20:11obviously like my demographic and stuff.
- 20:14And I just think it's exhausting.
- 20:16And also people don't really talk like this in real life, so
- 20:19I think we need to remember that.
- 20:21But yes, OK, anyways guys, that's it for today.
- 20:24I'm sorry for all of this. I love you guys.
- 20:27Please rate, review and subscribe.
- 20:28Please subscribe to High Stakes. I love you and I will talk to
- 20:32you tomorrow. Bye.
