- 0:01Speaker 1: Well, good morning everybody, Happy weekend. You're listening to the
- 0:04Speaker 1: Repcolite home improvement show sponsored by Benjamin Moore. And before
- 0:08Speaker 1: I jump into the show, I've got a question that
- 0:11Speaker 1: just popped into my mind and I need to know
- 0:13Speaker 1: the answer. I need to know. I need to know.
- 0:16Speaker 1: Here's my question. Do you typically when you go to
- 0:18Speaker 1: bed on Friday night? Do you go to bed knowing
- 0:21Speaker 1: what your projects and plans are going to be when
- 0:23Speaker 1: you wake up on Saturday? Or do you go to
- 0:25Speaker 1: bed on Friday night, you know, completely unaware of what
- 0:28Speaker 1: your weekend weekend plans are going to be? You know?
- 0:31Speaker 1: Do you decide in advance and then go to bed
- 0:34Speaker 1: with that plan in mind and then wake up and
- 0:36Speaker 1: jump in or do you wake up and think I
- 0:38Speaker 1: don't know what's coming? You know, I'll just live with
- 0:40Speaker 1: this on the fly. Let me know. I want to know.
- 0:42Speaker 1: Email Radio at repco Light dot com and I'll take
- 0:45Speaker 1: the third answer, and that person is going to receive
- 0:48Speaker 1: a fifty dollars gift certificate to Repcolite doing that just
- 0:51Speaker 1: because I'm feeling big hearted and curious, strangely curious. So
- 0:55Speaker 1: email radio at repco Light dot com and let me know,
- 0:58Speaker 1: are you a planner in advance or are you a
- 1:00Speaker 1: seat of your pantser? Third person email gets fifty bucks.
- 1:03Speaker 1: All right, enough of that, though, Like I said, I'm
- 1:05Speaker 1: curious to hear the answers. I'm betting my money's on
- 1:09Speaker 1: the fact that there are more planners than sea of
- 1:11Speaker 1: your pantsers. But I'll find out and i'll let you know.
- 1:14Speaker 1: All right, Coming up on the show, we're going to
- 1:16Speaker 1: be talking at the end of the show about how
- 1:18Speaker 1: the wrong air filter can shorten the life of your furnace.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Won't won't won't nobody wants that. I'll tell you about
- 1:25Speaker 1: that and how you can make sure that doesn't happen
- 1:27Speaker 1: to you. That's coming up at the end. I'm also
- 1:30Speaker 1: going to be talking with interior designer Andy Yates about
- 1:33Speaker 1: a couple of listener questions. One of them, in particular,
- 1:36Speaker 1: is really really great. It's really fun. It involves a
- 1:39Speaker 1: listener who wrote in anonymously, and basically what she's got
- 1:43Speaker 1: going on is she says her husband has picked a
- 1:45Speaker 1: terrible green for a room in their home, and she
- 1:48Speaker 1: is looking for advice on how to override that decision
- 1:51Speaker 1: without starting a great, big fight. So we're going to
- 1:54Speaker 1: be helping with color and we're going to be doing
- 1:56Speaker 1: a little marriage counseling on the side. That's coming up
- 1:59Speaker 1: in a bit. We'll also be talking about Festival Sanders,
- 2:02Speaker 1: some tools and products that we picked up at repco
- 2:05Speaker 1: Light oh Man earlier in the year, I would say,
- 2:08Speaker 1: for sure, and we'll talk about those in a demo
- 2:11Speaker 1: day that we've got planned. It's going to be happening
- 2:13Speaker 1: at the Repcolite En Byron Center on October eighth. I'll
- 2:16Speaker 1: get you all the info on that. We'd love to
- 2:18Speaker 1: see you there. But right now, let's get to the
- 2:21Speaker 1: paint point for the week, the meat of the show,
- 2:24Speaker 1: the thing everybody waits for every single week. And I
- 2:27Speaker 1: want to start this particular paint point with a quick
- 2:30Speaker 1: caveat I'm not a complete idiot. It's just that I
- 2:36Speaker 1: learned by trial and error better than any other way,
- 2:39Speaker 1: and I just happen to be willing, you know, to
- 2:43Speaker 1: clearly explain my errors on the radio. So I'm not
- 2:46Speaker 1: a complete idiot. I wanted to get that out there
- 2:47Speaker 1: right off the bat. Maybe that's the truth, Maybe maybe
- 2:50Speaker 1: it's a lie. Maybe I really am a complete idiot.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I'll leave that for you to decide, just just don't
- 2:57Speaker 1: email me about that one. I don't want to know
- 2:58Speaker 1: what you think about that one. Okay, here's the pain
- 3:01Speaker 1: point for the week. I've got a horrible track record
- 3:04Speaker 1: when it comes to windshield wipers. Of all things, windshield
- 3:07Speaker 1: wipers the bane of my existence, it seems. To make
- 3:10Speaker 1: this point, I want to go back to one particular
- 3:13Speaker 1: experience that's burned in my memory. It began when my wiper,
- 3:17Speaker 1: of course, the driver's side wiper broke. You know, it
- 3:20Speaker 1: was there one minute and I'm driving happily along in
- 3:23Speaker 1: the rain. It's just doing its thing, and then all
- 3:25Speaker 1: of a sudden, whoop, something flies off to the car,
- 3:28Speaker 1: and then there's this horrible grinding sound as the metal
- 3:32Speaker 1: arm the only thing that's left is sitting there scraping
- 3:35Speaker 1: over the windshield. You know that horrible sound that it makes.
- 3:38Speaker 1: That's what's going on. Well, fortunately when that happened, I
- 3:41Speaker 1: was near enough to a store and I was able
- 3:44Speaker 1: to quickly swerve in and make my way to the
- 3:47Speaker 1: department where I found all these windshield wipers. And this
- 3:50Speaker 1: was a long time ago. When this happened, one of
- 3:53Speaker 1: my first times having to deal with a broken windshield wiper,
- 3:57Speaker 1: you know. So it's a new ground for me that
- 4:00Speaker 1: I was covering. And when I walked into that little department,
- 4:02Speaker 1: I was blown away by the number of options. It
- 4:05Speaker 1: was ridiculous. There were so many different windshield wipers to
- 4:09Speaker 1: choose from, not just all the millions of sizes that
- 4:12Speaker 1: were available, but all the different price options and brands.
- 4:16Speaker 1: It was crazy. So I'm standing there looking at I'm
- 4:20Speaker 1: trying to figure out what to do, looking over all
- 4:22Speaker 1: these options, and after weighing them carefully, I decided to
- 4:25Speaker 1: go with the cheapest ones that I could find. You know,
- 4:28Speaker 1: they're windshield wipers, right, How technical can these things be?
- 4:33Speaker 1: I think the ones that I bought cost four bucks
- 4:35Speaker 1: each something like that. Anyway, I snagged them, marched out
- 4:38Speaker 1: to my car, and then began what felt like a
- 4:41Speaker 1: forty minute battle in the parking lot in the rain
- 4:44Speaker 1: to figure out how in the world to get the
- 4:46Speaker 1: one remaining one off and then the new ones on.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Eventually I figured it out and I drove away, wet
- 4:54Speaker 1: but happy. All right, flash forward, I had maybe two weeks.
- 4:58Speaker 1: It was not long, driving around more rain, you know,
- 5:01Speaker 1: one of those Michigan falls, lots of rain coming down.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I flick on the windshield wipers, and one of those
- 5:07Speaker 1: little rubber flaps, you know, the little squeegey part of
- 5:10Speaker 1: the wiper. It's flopping all over the place on my windshield.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And then as I'm watching it, you know, trying to
- 5:16Speaker 1: figure out what is happening, What is that thing? Is
- 5:19Speaker 1: that a worm? How did that worm get on my Well,
- 5:21Speaker 1: as I'm thinking about all that, trying to figure out
- 5:23Speaker 1: what this thing is, whoop, there it goes. The little
- 5:26Speaker 1: rubber thing shoots off and zips away over my car.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Now the wipers still there. It's still going back and forth,
- 5:32Speaker 1: but there's no rubber blade, so it's really just smearing
- 5:36Speaker 1: rain all over the glass. Wellfortunately, again I was near
- 5:39Speaker 1: enough to a store, you know the drill. I swerved
- 5:42Speaker 1: into the place, went straight to the rack of wipers,
- 5:44Speaker 1: and then I bought the most expensive wipers that I
- 5:48Speaker 1: could find, you know. I went out to the car,
- 5:50Speaker 1: installed them with less trouble than before, but by no
- 5:54Speaker 1: means smoothly, and then I finally, you know, once they
- 5:57Speaker 1: were in place, finally drove away and merged onto the highway.
- 6:01Speaker 1: All right, rain is still pouring down, and I turn
- 6:04Speaker 1: on the windshield wipers, and then this feeling of intense
- 6:09Speaker 1: satisfaction sets in. You know, I'm watching them as they
- 6:12Speaker 1: perfectly clean my window. It was like looking at the
- 6:15Speaker 1: world in high definition, you know, after watching all this
- 6:18Speaker 1: fuzzy for a while, you know, just seeing what real, good,
- 6:22Speaker 1: high quality windshield wipers will do. You know, I'm looking
- 6:25Speaker 1: at that, and I'm telling myself that this is truly,
- 6:28Speaker 1: this is the way to live. You know. Don't try
- 6:30Speaker 1: to save money on windshield wipers. It's not worth it,
- 6:33Speaker 1: not when you can have and write. As I'm in
- 6:35Speaker 1: the middle of that thought, whoop, my windshield wiper shoots
- 6:38Speaker 1: straight off of that little arm again and then disappears
- 6:42Speaker 1: somewhere behind me on the highway. The rain smeared windshield
- 6:45Speaker 1: and then the wiperless arm, you know, was once again
- 6:47Speaker 1: scraping metal over glass windshield wipers. First I went cheap
- 6:51Speaker 1: and I suffered. Then I went to the best there was.
- 6:54Speaker 1: I dropped the money and I put them on incorrectly
- 6:57Speaker 1: and watched my money fly off the car at seventy
- 6:59Speaker 1: mins an hour. And that brings me to well, first off,
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm not a complete idiot. Maybe I am, you know
- 7:06Speaker 1: at this point, who knows? Now? That I relived that
- 7:10Speaker 1: story in my head might just be a complete idiot.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I might just have to buy into that fact. But
- 7:16Speaker 1: let me get to the paint point. And this particular
- 7:19Speaker 1: paint point, believe it or not, is about masking tape.
- 7:22Speaker 1: And I think masking tape is the windshield wiper of
- 7:25Speaker 1: the paint world. You know, first off, there's a bazillion options.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You walk into the store, you wander over the tape aile,
- 7:32Speaker 1: and you're confronted with all kinds of choices that you
- 7:35Speaker 1: get to make. There's cheap options, you can go with
- 7:37Speaker 1: expensive options, options and little plastic containers. What's up with that?
- 7:42Speaker 1: All kinds of things that you can do. You know,
- 7:44Speaker 1: what do all these different tapes do? Why would you
- 7:47Speaker 1: get this one and not that one? Which one's right
- 7:49Speaker 1: for the project you're working on? Well, on top of
- 7:52Speaker 1: all of those questions, you can end up buying a
- 7:54Speaker 1: good quality tape, but if you don't put it on
- 7:57Speaker 1: the surface correctly, it doesn't work as well as you'd
- 7:59Speaker 1: like it. It's kind of like my expensive wiper that
- 8:02Speaker 1: wasn't installed. Well, little good it did me. However, Interestingly enough,
- 8:06Speaker 1: this is where the whole analogy with the wipers breaks.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Interestingly enough, there is one option out there when it
- 8:12Speaker 1: comes to tape. It's the priciest option, but it works
- 8:15Speaker 1: almost every time, even if you don't put it on
- 8:18Speaker 1: as well as some of the other ones. We'll get
- 8:20Speaker 1: to that in a little bit, all right. For now,
- 8:21Speaker 1: let's take a look at the different kinds of tape
- 8:23Speaker 1: that are out there and help you understand which one's
- 8:26Speaker 1: right for you. And while I can't hit all of
- 8:28Speaker 1: the different kinds, that can hit the basics. The cheapest
- 8:30Speaker 1: tape is a basic brown masking tape. Then you've got
- 8:34Speaker 1: blue painters tape that's the middle of the road, next
- 8:36Speaker 1: step up, and then finally there's a number of different
- 8:39Speaker 1: kinds of frog tape. Now I'm being really generic here,
- 8:42Speaker 1: but I think it's still good enough information to help
- 8:44Speaker 1: you out. That basic brown tape let's go back to that.
- 8:47Speaker 1: It's not ideal to use when you're attempting to mask
- 8:49Speaker 1: off areas when you're painting. Now, it's good for taping together,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you know, things like large sheets of paper maybe that
- 8:55Speaker 1: you'd roll on the floor to protect the floors while
- 8:58Speaker 1: you're working. It's good for things like that, but it's
- 9:00Speaker 1: really not the best for using it on your walls. Now,
- 9:03Speaker 1: it can work, but after testing all the different kinds
- 9:06Speaker 1: of tape that we offer, I did a lot of
- 9:07Speaker 1: testing with all these different tapes, and when I did
- 9:10Speaker 1: that testing this one, this brown basic brown masking tape,
- 9:14Speaker 1: it always one hundred percent of the time produced the
- 9:16Speaker 1: worst results. No matter what I did to try to
- 9:19Speaker 1: seal it tightly against my surface, I always always ended
- 9:22Speaker 1: up with bleed through, which is really the whole reason
- 9:25Speaker 1: that you're taping in the first place, to avoid that
- 9:27Speaker 1: bleed through. So the Basic Brown doesn't work really well
- 9:31Speaker 1: for that. And additionally, you have to remove it much
- 9:33Speaker 1: sooner than the other tapes, and even when you do that,
- 9:37Speaker 1: it tends to remove with more difficulty. I know people
- 9:40Speaker 1: use it, but I really think this is one of
- 9:42Speaker 1: those things, you know, where we think that all tapes
- 9:44Speaker 1: are roughly the same, so why spend more? You know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: that was me and my cheap windshield wipers. All right,
- 9:50Speaker 1: that's the cheapest brown, you know, basic brown tape that
- 9:53Speaker 1: there is out there. The next tape up from that
- 9:56Speaker 1: is the blue painters tape. Now, this one's pricier than
- 9:59Speaker 1: the Basic Brown, but it's still cheaper than the frog tape,
- 10:02Speaker 1: which we're going to get to in a minute. So
- 10:04Speaker 1: this one's right in the middle. The blue painter's tape.
- 10:06Speaker 1: It's much nicer to work with than that brown stuff
- 10:09Speaker 1: when it's applied correctly. You know, when you put the
- 10:11Speaker 1: tape on your surface and then go back over the
- 10:13Speaker 1: edge that's going to be painted up to. If you
- 10:16Speaker 1: go over that edge with a putty knife or maybe
- 10:18Speaker 1: your fingernail to really seal it well, when you take
- 10:21Speaker 1: the extra time to do that, take that extra step,
- 10:23Speaker 1: this tape works really really well, and in my experience
- 10:26Speaker 1: it prevents pretty much all bleed through. Now, if you don't,
- 10:30Speaker 1: you know, take the time to press that edge down tightly,
- 10:32Speaker 1: if you just apply the tape and then paint up
- 10:34Speaker 1: to it, you're gonna experience more bleed through. Not as
- 10:37Speaker 1: much as the brown, cheaper tape, but definitely more than
- 10:40Speaker 1: if you seal that edge with a putty knife or
- 10:42Speaker 1: your finger. You know. It's kind of like my more
- 10:44Speaker 1: expensive windshield wiper. Having the better wiper isn't as important
- 10:49Speaker 1: if you don't install it correctly and then you end
- 10:51Speaker 1: up losing it. Now I'm stretching like a gymnast to
- 10:54Speaker 1: try to make that fit. But you can see what
- 10:55Speaker 1: I'm getting it. The blue tape can give you great results.
- 10:58Speaker 1: Just take the time to press those edges down well.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Another benefit to the blue tape is that it can
- 11:03Speaker 1: be left on that surface for up to fourteen days
- 11:05Speaker 1: and it will still remove cleanly. Now, all in all,
- 11:07Speaker 1: it's an ideal choice if you're trying to save some
- 11:10Speaker 1: money on your project, but you still want really good,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you know, high end professional results. So that's the blue tape. Finally,
- 11:16Speaker 1: last tape I want to talk about. Let's talk about
- 11:18Speaker 1: frog tape. It's the more expensive of the different options
- 11:21Speaker 1: out there, and there's a reason for that. Frog tape
- 11:24Speaker 1: is made with something called paint block technology. Basically, the
- 11:28Speaker 1: tape is treated with this super absorbent you know, polymer
- 11:32Speaker 1: that reacts with water in your water based paint. So
- 11:35Speaker 1: when the water in the paint comes up to that
- 11:37Speaker 1: edge of the tape, that polymer instantly reacts and it
- 11:40Speaker 1: instantly gels and forms a seal on the edge of
- 11:43Speaker 1: the tape and that prevents bleed through. Now, as I mentioned,
- 11:46Speaker 1: I did a fair amount of testing with all the
- 11:49Speaker 1: different tapes that we've got, and what I found was
- 11:51Speaker 1: that no matter how I applied that cheap brown tape,
- 11:54Speaker 1: that first one we talked about, no matter how I
- 11:56Speaker 1: put that on, I had bleed through. If I just
- 12:00Speaker 1: applied the blue painter's tape and painted up to it,
- 12:03Speaker 1: you know, just put it on and painted right up
- 12:05Speaker 1: to it, I had some bleed through, but it was
- 12:07Speaker 1: still much better than the brown. When I used a
- 12:10Speaker 1: putty knife to press the edge of the blue tape
- 12:11Speaker 1: tightly to the surface and then painted up to it,
- 12:14Speaker 1: I had almost no bleed through. With frog tape, I
- 12:17Speaker 1: had pretty much no bleed through no matter how I
- 12:19Speaker 1: applied it, if I used a putty knife or not.
- 12:21Speaker 1: The paint block technology really did a good job to
- 12:24Speaker 1: prevent that bleed through. So one last thing to mention.
- 12:27Speaker 1: We have a couple other tapes that I should highlight here.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Frog tape makes one and three M makes another. A
- 12:33Speaker 1: couple other tapes that are for delicate surfaces like wallpaper
- 12:37Speaker 1: or freshly painted areas. Now those tapes, they've got a
- 12:40Speaker 1: gentler adhesive that will allow you to tape off those
- 12:42Speaker 1: delicate areas and then still remove the tape without causing damage.
- 12:47Speaker 1: So keep that in mind if you've got a unique
- 12:49Speaker 1: taping situation like that, ask about the delicate surface tapes.
- 12:53Speaker 1: Great way to go. All right, it's a ton of info.
- 12:56Speaker 1: Hopefully it helps you understand the tape section just a
- 12:58Speaker 1: little more. You know, not many of us like taping.
- 13:01Speaker 1: I can't think of anybody that really likes taping when
- 13:04Speaker 1: we do a paint project. But here's a couple of things.
- 13:06Speaker 1: You know, one last minute thing to think about. Taping
- 13:08Speaker 1: is going to take you probably the same amount of
- 13:10Speaker 1: time no matter what tape you use. If you use
- 13:13Speaker 1: the cheapest brown tape or the best frog tape, same
- 13:16Speaker 1: amount of time, same amount of displeasure with the work,
- 13:20Speaker 1: if we want to say it that way. But your
- 13:22Speaker 1: results are going to vary dramatically depending on the tape
- 13:26Speaker 1: you use. If you use the cheap stuff, you spent
- 13:28Speaker 1: all that time, didn't enjoy the work, and now you
- 13:31Speaker 1: don't even enjoy the end results. At least with the
- 13:33Speaker 1: frog tape or the blue tape. If you take the
- 13:35Speaker 1: time to press it downright, you still won't enjoy the process,
- 13:39Speaker 1: but at least you'll love the results at the end,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and that's a big win. All right, that's the paint
- 13:43Speaker 1: point for the week. Now let's take a break and
- 13:45Speaker 1: when we come back, we'll be talking about Festival Sanders.
- 13:48Speaker 1: That's all just ahead, stick around, Welcome back. You're listening
- 14:02Speaker 1: to the Repco Light home improvement shows sponsored by Benjamin Moore.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And my dad. He was a major, big time woodworking
- 14:10Speaker 1: hobbyist when he lived at his previous house. And it's
- 14:13Speaker 1: kind of crazy. He just did fun stuff, you know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: nothing fancy, but he enjoyed it immensely. You know, my
- 14:19Speaker 1: entire family, they're all laughing. There's inside jokes about this.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Dad loved it so much. He'd spend forever in the
- 14:27Speaker 1: basement doing woodworking stuff. Then he moved to the condo
- 14:31Speaker 1: that they're in right now. And when Dad began packing
- 14:34Speaker 1: up all his tools, he found an insane amount of
- 14:37Speaker 1: sawdust that had collected over the years. Now you have
- 14:40Speaker 1: no idea how much sawdust. In fact, just imagine what
- 14:43Speaker 1: you think of as an insane amount of sawdust lurking,
- 14:47Speaker 1: you know, behind every piece of equipment, every shelf, every bookcase.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Imagine that got the picture in your mind. Now, triple
- 14:53Speaker 1: it and then multiply that by ten. That's what Dad had.
- 14:57Speaker 1: In fact, he had so much that when he moved
- 14:59Speaker 1: to the new condo. You know, he pretty much abandoned
- 15:02Speaker 1: his whole woodworking hobby. He still does some of it
- 15:05Speaker 1: a little bit, but nothing like he used to. He
- 15:07Speaker 1: doesn't wake up at four in the morning and saw
- 15:09Speaker 1: and cut wood and do all of that until nine
- 15:12Speaker 1: at night. Not anymore. No, Dad's become more reasonable. But
- 15:16Speaker 1: really it's just too much mess. He quit because he
- 15:19Speaker 1: didn't want to create all of that mess, all of
- 15:22Speaker 1: that sawdust in the new place. It was disheartening. It
- 15:24Speaker 1: killed his hobby. It's a little bit sad. You know,
- 15:27Speaker 1: Mom's not crying too many tears, but in a way,
- 15:30Speaker 1: it's a little bit sad. So I bring that up
- 15:33Speaker 1: because there are many others of you out there like Dad,
- 15:36Speaker 1: maybe not quite that insane, but you know, maybe you're
- 15:39Speaker 1: a woodworking hobbyist and you'd like to create less sawdust
- 15:42Speaker 1: in your basement, or maybe, you know, maybe yours is
- 15:44Speaker 1: a different situation. Maybe you're a professional painting contractor or
- 15:48Speaker 1: a woodworker and you'd like to do more to keep
- 15:50Speaker 1: the shop clean or the client's home or office clean
- 15:53Speaker 1: when you do workout there. Well, at Repcolite we now
- 15:56Speaker 1: carry festual equipment. There are a lot of different ops
- 16:00Speaker 1: when it comes to Festool, and we don't stock all
- 16:02Speaker 1: of it by any means. We don't stock all of it,
- 16:04Speaker 1: but we can certainly order anything from orbital sanders. Now
- 16:07Speaker 1: we stock the orbital sanders, but you can get anything
- 16:10Speaker 1: from orbital sanders to drywall sanders to circular saws and
- 16:14Speaker 1: table saws. I mean, it's all over the place pretty much.
- 16:17Speaker 1: If there's a tool out there that you could use,
- 16:19Speaker 1: fest Tool has created a version that they sell. And
- 16:23Speaker 1: best of all, every single piece of equipment, every festival
- 16:26Speaker 1: piece of equipment, can be connected to the various Festual
- 16:29Speaker 1: vacuums that are available now. Festual Tools they're well known
- 16:33Speaker 1: for being high quality, but really it's their crazy success
- 16:37Speaker 1: at dust extraction that's their claim to fame. Now, whether
- 16:40Speaker 1: you're a serious hobbyist or a professional, you really should
- 16:43Speaker 1: check out what Festol has to offer. Just look online,
- 16:46Speaker 1: do some research. You know, you don't have to hear
- 16:48Speaker 1: me say it, just go look for it. And when
- 16:50Speaker 1: you do that, what you're going to find, pretty much
- 16:52Speaker 1: across the board is that the reviews are through the roof.
- 16:55Speaker 1: You know, amazing dust extraction abilities, great build quality, great performance,
- 17:00Speaker 1: all of that. The big downside. The big con that
- 17:02Speaker 1: you're going to run into is usually the price. You know,
- 17:05Speaker 1: they're not inexpensive, and the people who buy them, the
- 17:08Speaker 1: professionals and the serious hobbyists out there, they buy them
- 17:11Speaker 1: seeing them as an investment. You know, these are tools
- 17:13Speaker 1: that are going to do the job. They'll do it
- 17:15Speaker 1: with significantly less dust than you would ever expect, and
- 17:18Speaker 1: they'll do it for a long time now. I used
- 17:21Speaker 1: a Festol orbital sand or in the vacuum system in
- 17:24Speaker 1: my house recently to do some sanding in my living room.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I talked about it on the show a few months ago.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I sanded in the living room for about two hours
- 17:32Speaker 1: or so on a variety of different surfaces. You know,
- 17:34Speaker 1: I had some peeling paint, I was sanding, some plaster areas,
- 17:37Speaker 1: some wood furniture that I brought in that I did
- 17:39Speaker 1: the sanding in my living room with the vacuum going
- 17:42Speaker 1: and it was amazing. I had no noticeable dust collecting anywhere.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It was almost completely removed by the system. It was great.
- 17:50Speaker 1: So you know, you, I know, the economy isn't exactly
- 17:53Speaker 1: booming right now, and this is a premium tool and
- 17:55Speaker 1: it's probably outside the range of a lot of budgets.
- 17:57Speaker 1: But if you love woodworking or if you do sanding
- 18:00Speaker 1: another work on a regular basis for your profession, these
- 18:03Speaker 1: are tools that really could be easily worth the investment.
- 18:06Speaker 1: We've got them on the West side of Michigan at
- 18:08Speaker 1: our Lake with Boulevard store in Holland and at the
- 18:10Speaker 1: Byron Center location. And if you're interested in seeing what
- 18:13Speaker 1: Festool could do for you, either at home or on
- 18:16Speaker 1: the job, just stop out at our Byron Center store
- 18:18Speaker 1: on Tuesday, October eighth, from ten to two. We're hosting
- 18:22Speaker 1: a demo day. Experts from Festool are going to be there,
- 18:24Speaker 1: and they're going to bring a ton of different pieces
- 18:26Speaker 1: of equipment and they'll be running it, answering your questions
- 18:29Speaker 1: and letting you try it out. That's October eight, from
- 18:31Speaker 1: ten to two at our Byron Center location. I've got
- 18:34Speaker 1: more info if you're interested, more info online at Repcoli
- 18:37Speaker 1: dot com. So check that out. All right, let's take
- 18:40Speaker 1: a quick break. When we come back, I'm going to
- 18:42Speaker 1: be in the studio with Andy Yates from Andy ATE's
- 18:44Speaker 1: Design answering some of your design questions. That's all just ahead,
- 18:48Speaker 1: stick around and we are back at again. You're listening
- 19:01Speaker 1: to the Repco White Home Improvement Show sponsored by Benjamin Moore,
- 19:04Speaker 1: and I am super excited about this segment. I am
- 19:07Speaker 1: joined by Andy Yates from Andy Yates Design, and we're
- 19:10Speaker 1: gonna answer your questions. Andy, thanks for being here.
- 19:14Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 19:14Speaker 1: Dan, good morning, Well, good morning to you too. Now
- 19:17Speaker 1: let's jump right in. Andy, I've got a question from
- 19:20Speaker 1: Megan in Grand Rapids, and it's a long question, but
- 19:24Speaker 1: I think you'll get the gist of it pretty straight up.
- 19:27Speaker 1: I'm working with a small bedroom and my son wants
- 19:30Speaker 1: to paint everything dark. He's picked out a relatively dark
- 19:33Speaker 1: charcoal color and wants it on everything, including the ceiling.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I keep telling him it's going to make the room
- 19:38Speaker 1: feel small and boxed in. There's just one small window
- 19:42Speaker 1: on a west facing wall. What do you think? So there, Andy,
- 19:47Speaker 1: there's a lot there. You've got a child. I don't
- 19:50Speaker 1: know the age of the child, but all his hopes
- 19:53Speaker 1: and dreams hang on this charcoal color. And Mom is saying,
- 19:57Speaker 1: uh uh, who's gonna win?
- 19:59Speaker 2: Andy, Wow, I do feel very responsible answering this question.
- 20:04Speaker 2: I will say that if the charcoal first of all,
- 20:07Speaker 2: the charcoal hue again isn't too dowdy or heavy. Thinking
- 20:12Speaker 2: about how much balance of black and white it has
- 20:15Speaker 2: versus other hues in it, I would I would suggest
- 20:18Speaker 2: ensuring that it's it's kind of a more joyful charcoal
- 20:21Speaker 2: in a way, if that's not an oxymoron. But most importantly,
- 20:25Speaker 2: like the.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Face of a chimney sweep right in old London. They
- 20:29Speaker 1: go down and they come up and that bright smile,
- 20:32Speaker 1: a little bit of charcoal on their face, that kind
- 20:34Speaker 1: of happy charcoal, right.
- 20:36Speaker 2: I'm imagining that it's it's closer in my mind to
- 20:39Speaker 2: maybe like a battleship gray, adding some blue into it
- 20:42Speaker 2: so that it does have a sense of rather flat
- 20:46Speaker 2: ash but being calming, a little more dynamic. I love
- 20:52Speaker 2: to paint rooms monochromatically, trim walls, ceilings. I think that
- 20:58Speaker 2: especially when you adjust the sheene so right satin on
- 21:02Speaker 2: your trim, flatter mat on your walls and ceilings, it
- 21:05Speaker 2: still adds levels of interest. The concept of charcoal on
- 21:10Speaker 2: the walls and the ceiling, and the idea that Megan
- 21:13Speaker 2: expressed that it would make it feel smaller and boxed in.
- 21:18Speaker 2: It's a complex psychological approach because it's all about how
- 21:24Speaker 2: you curate the other elements in the room. So on
- 21:27Speaker 2: its face, no, the room is not necessarily going to
- 21:29Speaker 2: feel smaller if it has that moody, dark hue everywhere.
- 21:33Speaker 2: Dark colors recede right, and light colors reflect light so
- 21:37Speaker 2: they approach you. So I often use this analogy. Imagine
- 21:40Speaker 2: you're sitting in a dark theater with the screen on,
- 21:45Speaker 2: knowing that all the walls and ceiling are black. In
- 21:48Speaker 2: that instance, you can't really tell where the walls are
- 21:52Speaker 2: because they've disappeared. They're receding away, and you can't really
- 21:55Speaker 2: see the ceiling, so you don't know how tall the
- 21:57Speaker 2: space is. So dark colors can have that effect of
- 22:01Speaker 2: actually kind of making a space feel a little bit
- 22:03Speaker 2: more expansive because the boundaries disappear, which again psychologically is interesting.
- 22:09Speaker 2: If it is a small room and you want to
- 22:12Speaker 2: make it feel larger, especially if he's uncomfortable with it
- 22:17Speaker 2: after you paint it, I would say focus on adding
- 22:19Speaker 2: elements that balance that dark so lighter drapes and betting
- 22:24Speaker 2: you know, what, does the carpet, does the floor kind
- 22:26Speaker 2: of reflect light up onto those walls? Is there you know,
- 22:31Speaker 2: a large enough kind of bright light fixture in the
- 22:33Speaker 2: ceiling to break up that plane. And of course don't
- 22:36Speaker 2: forget art, especially in that arena, art that imbues more
- 22:40Speaker 2: color or that feels like it has a lot of
- 22:43Speaker 2: like white or lighter tones in it to help balance everything. Right,
- 22:47Speaker 2: So again, there's no wrong color to use on walls
- 22:51Speaker 2: necessarily and ceilings. It's really about how the elements are
- 22:55Speaker 2: all crafted together to be cohesive, all.
- 22:58Speaker 1: Right, perfect. I think that gets to what Megan. I
- 23:01Speaker 1: don't think that gets to the answer Megan was hoping
- 23:03Speaker 1: to hear.
- 23:03Speaker 2: I'm not really interested in a follow up, Meghan. I
- 23:05Speaker 2: would love to see photos after you paint this bedroom
- 23:09Speaker 2: and learn about how your son reacts to it.
- 23:13Speaker 1: Now, there's a kid somewhere in Grand Rapids giving high
- 23:15Speaker 1: fives to somebody. Maybe it's just his siblings, but he
- 23:19Speaker 1: just won. All right, last question that I've got for
- 23:21Speaker 1: the day, and this one the asker. The questioner is
- 23:26Speaker 1: going to remain nameless just in case, and you're going
- 23:29Speaker 1: to see why in a minute. Anonymous says, my husband
- 23:33Speaker 1: thinks he has a good eye when it comes to color.
- 23:36Speaker 1: Right now, he's picked out colors for our family room
- 23:38Speaker 1: and the green he's chosen for the walls is terrible.
- 23:41Speaker 1: I don't want to fight, and I don't want to
- 23:43Speaker 1: hurt his feelings, but I can't see how this green
- 23:46Speaker 1: is going to work. How do you deal with situations
- 23:49Speaker 1: where clients maybe want a color that you think looks
- 23:51Speaker 1: bad if that ever comes up? So Andy, you've got
- 23:55Speaker 1: to help us with some relationship issues in this one. Yes,
- 24:00Speaker 1: doctor Andy, what would you say about this one?
- 24:02Speaker 2: I would say that often my job does lend itself
- 24:08Speaker 2: to a little bit of marriage counseling, and this is
- 24:12Speaker 2: a very common situation because everyone sees color differently. No
- 24:17Speaker 2: two people look at the same hue and see it
- 24:19Speaker 2: exactly the same. But we can't articulate that to someone
- 24:22Speaker 2: because they can't use our vision. So I don't want
- 24:26Speaker 2: you to fight either. I want to make peace. I'm
- 24:27Speaker 2: a natural peacemaker. There is a way to resolve this,
- 24:31Speaker 2: I would say, first and foremost, if you've selected the
- 24:35Speaker 2: green and you haven't actually placed it on the wall,
- 24:39Speaker 2: you paint a sample of it and live with it
- 24:42Speaker 2: for a while and discuss it openly and honestly. You know,
- 24:47Speaker 2: I think in good in good conflict resolution, you want
- 24:49Speaker 2: to avoid negative language. She'll try not to use words
- 24:52Speaker 2: that feel like an attack and keep it.
- 24:55Speaker 1: How about terrible? The green he's chosen is terrible? Is
- 24:59Speaker 1: that perhaps perhaps leaning a little too much into the negative?
- 25:05Speaker 2: I would I would want to dig deeper and say
- 25:07Speaker 2: why is it terrible because it reminds you of pea soup?
- 25:11Speaker 2: Is it terrible because you just don't like it? The
- 25:16Speaker 2: more you can articulate what you're feeling and why, the
- 25:20Speaker 2: easier it will be for someone to empathize. So just
- 25:24Speaker 2: to say that's a terrible green and you picked that
- 25:27Speaker 2: is really kind of saying that you are terrible, right,
- 25:31Speaker 2: somebody's that isn't a nice delivery.
- 25:33Speaker 1: It's not going to get you where you want to, right, It.
- 25:34Speaker 2: Isn't very productive. So I would I would look at
- 25:37Speaker 2: the color on the wall, live with it for a
- 25:39Speaker 2: little bit, paint a large section, and talk about it.
- 25:43Speaker 2: Talk about it in the morning, in the evening, and
- 25:46Speaker 2: not when you're stressed or tired or right, find a
- 25:49Speaker 2: really good day when you're both in a good mood
- 25:51Speaker 2: and you know, prepare yourself right to think about that.
- 25:57Speaker 2: It's also kind of important to look at how that
- 25:59Speaker 2: green is going to be juxtaposed with other colors, because
- 26:04Speaker 2: it will change how does it reflect the flooring in
- 26:07Speaker 2: that room, what will the ceiling color be, and how
- 26:09Speaker 2: will it reflect onto that green? Would you add a
- 26:12Speaker 2: white with some more pink in it to kind of
- 26:15Speaker 2: contrast and look at neutralizing it a little bit? So
- 26:19Speaker 2: many factors, or just hire a designer because you need
- 26:24Speaker 2: a neutral arbitrator, someone that could help a lot, right,
- 26:27Speaker 2: And I have consultation packages, flat feed consultation packages. I
- 26:32Speaker 2: know every designer I know will do this, probably either
- 26:36Speaker 2: as a specific color consultation or just you know, an
- 26:40Speaker 2: in home visit for one or two hours to solve
- 26:43Speaker 2: whatever issues you have in that time. And that could
- 26:46Speaker 2: be really helpful because then it's not pitting you against
- 26:49Speaker 2: your partner. You're inviting, you know, a neutral third party
- 26:53Speaker 2: expert to come in and help mediate and hopefully arrive
- 26:57Speaker 2: at a great solution, which might be this green works
- 27:01Speaker 2: or something very similar works better that you can both
- 27:04Speaker 2: agree upon. There's millions of greens that exist. I'm sure
- 27:09Speaker 2: you can find a hue that satisfies you both that's
- 27:12Speaker 2: very lovely for your home.
- 27:14Speaker 1: Definitely with the sampling Benjamin Moore samples are available eight ounces,
- 27:18Speaker 1: five ninety nine. I think it's a very inexpensive buy
- 27:21Speaker 1: in to be able to actually put paint on the
- 27:23Speaker 1: wall and take a look at it, and like you said,
- 27:26Speaker 1: to analyze it over the course of a length of time.
- 27:29Speaker 1: You know, don't just look at it during one particular moment,
- 27:31Speaker 1: because as lighting changes, you got to live with it
- 27:33Speaker 1: for a little bit to see what that color's going
- 27:35Speaker 1: to do as time goes by.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Right, And I wonder too, dan If in their situation anonymous,
- 27:41Speaker 2: anonymous and anonymous as husband If in your situation, I'm
- 27:44Speaker 2: very curious about what windows are in this room and
- 27:47Speaker 2: how much green do you see in the exterior? So
- 27:50Speaker 2: are you in a wooded setting? Do you have a
- 27:52Speaker 2: really lush green lawn and trees. That's why it's really
- 27:55Speaker 2: important to see it in the space, because that's going
- 27:58Speaker 2: to affect what you might really love about your view,
- 28:01Speaker 2: or what you might love again about the finish on
- 28:04Speaker 2: your floor, that stain or that color. So it's so personal.
- 28:09Speaker 2: I think that's the best way to approach it, and
- 28:12Speaker 2: it's I'm curious about what it is because greens are
- 28:15Speaker 2: generally so lovely and beautiful. We're really naturally hardwired to
- 28:19Speaker 2: love nature. I'm curious to know why this one strikes
- 28:23Speaker 2: her as being quote unquote terrible. All right, well, maybe
- 28:26Speaker 2: maybe we'll get some follow thos. Yeah, I love it, Anonymous,
- 28:29Speaker 2: send photos please of this green.
- 28:32Speaker 1: If we get this, we will air follow up and
- 28:35Speaker 1: get more answers from Andy. All right, that's all the time.
- 28:37Speaker 1: We've got a lot of questions that you covered, Andy,
- 28:40Speaker 1: I appreciate it. I definitely would encourage any listeners out
- 28:43Speaker 1: there if you've got questions. Now you've kind of seen
- 28:46Speaker 1: what we're working through and what and Andy's gonna do
- 28:49Speaker 1: with those questions. If you've got questions, even if we
- 28:51Speaker 1: don't have a segment coming up in the next week
- 28:53Speaker 1: or two, get those questions to me radio atrepco light
- 28:57Speaker 1: dot com. Just ask them. I'll get them to Ansy
- 29:00Speaker 1: and the next time we sit down together, I'll throw
- 29:02Speaker 1: them your way. Now, Andy, if our listeners want to
- 29:04Speaker 1: reach out to you, check out your website, get some Yeah,
- 29:07Speaker 1: because I know you've got a lot of photos, blogs
- 29:09Speaker 1: out there, all kinds of different stuff. How do they
- 29:11Speaker 1: get in touch with you? That way?
- 29:13Speaker 2: You can find our website at Andy Yatesdesign dot com
- 29:17Speaker 2: and we are also on all of the socials at
- 29:21Speaker 2: Andy Yates Design all.
- 29:23Speaker 1: Right, awesome. I'll put links in the show notes so
- 29:25Speaker 1: people can check it out. Andy, thanks for hanging out today.
- 29:28Speaker 2: Thank you, Dan, it's been great.
- 29:29Speaker 1: All Right, We're going to take a break. When we
- 29:31Speaker 1: come back. I've got some information that will help you
- 29:34Speaker 1: potentially extend the life of your HVAC system, or if
- 29:38Speaker 1: you're so inclined, I could help you shorten the life
- 29:41Speaker 1: of your HVAC system. Whichever side you align with, I've
- 29:45Speaker 1: got info for you. And that's all coming up next.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Stick herround. We're back. You're listening to the Repold Home
- 29:57Speaker 1: improvement Show sponsored by Benjamin Moore, and we've officially entered fall. Right,
- 30:03Speaker 1: I think so. Right, Looking at the calendar, the calendar
- 30:06Speaker 1: confirms that I'm correct. As of September twenty two, we're
- 30:10Speaker 1: in fall, and that means, amongst other things, means we
- 30:13Speaker 1: can't wear white anymore. Right, can't wear white anymore. And
- 30:17Speaker 1: this year, this year, I am finally, finally ready for it.
- 30:22Speaker 1: I invested ahead of time with this in mind. I
- 30:25Speaker 1: invested in several assortment packs of underpants in various colors.
- 30:29Speaker 1: You know, in previous years, it was always a struggle,
- 30:32Speaker 1: you know, every morning I wake up and I'd stand
- 30:34Speaker 1: there looking at a drawer full of white under ruths,
- 30:38Speaker 1: and I'm left wondering what to do. It was a conundrum.
- 30:41Speaker 1: It was a dicey proposition. What do I wear? You know,
- 30:44Speaker 1: what if I'm in an accident. Mom always talked about that,
- 30:47Speaker 1: make sure you've got clean underpants on in case you're
- 30:49Speaker 1: in an accident. Always wondered about that. You know, I figured,
- 30:53Speaker 1: if I'm in an accident, it's probably the last thing
- 30:56Speaker 1: I'm going to be thinking about. But you know, as
- 30:58Speaker 1: an adult, that's really where where my mind goes. Sir,
- 31:02Speaker 1: your leg is missing, that's fine, but check out my underpants.
- 31:06Speaker 1: They are spotless. They are pristine. Anyway, Sorry about that,
- 31:10Speaker 1: Sorry about everything that's that's still to come. But anyway,
- 31:14Speaker 1: trying to get trying to get back on track here.
- 31:16Speaker 1: I guess I'm thinking, if I'm in an accident and
- 31:18Speaker 1: I'm in the hospital, I don't want them seeing my
- 31:20Speaker 1: white under ruths and thinking, what's this guy thinking? It's
- 31:23Speaker 1: fall It's after labor day, right, So this year I've
- 31:26Speaker 1: got an incredible assortment of colors to choose from, and
- 31:29Speaker 1: life's going to be easier. That's the bottom line. That's
- 31:32Speaker 1: what I was trying to get at. Life's going to
- 31:34Speaker 1: be easier. So I'm breathing a sigh of relief there.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But with fall, let's transition to important things. With fall,
- 31:40Speaker 1: serious face on now, everybody, there are all kinds of
- 31:42Speaker 1: other things, you know, that we need to think about
- 31:45Speaker 1: those of us who are homeowners, and pretty much shows
- 31:47Speaker 1: like ours, like this one is going to really start
- 31:50Speaker 1: hammering everybody with lists of things to do this fall.
- 31:53Speaker 1: It's coming. You know, we're gonna pile on all kinds
- 31:55Speaker 1: of jobs to help you get your homes ready for winter.
- 31:58Speaker 1: But before we go crazy to all those jobs, let's
- 32:01Speaker 1: just talk about one simple job that you're sure to
- 32:04Speaker 1: hear about soon. And I'm talking about the nagging that
- 32:07Speaker 1: you're going to get about changing your furnace filters. It's coming.
- 32:10Speaker 1: It's one of those homeowner tasks that's important to do,
- 32:13Speaker 1: but which a lot of us forget about, you know,
- 32:15Speaker 1: or we just don't even think about it. And yet
- 32:17Speaker 1: it really can make a big difference in how your
- 32:20Speaker 1: HVAC system runs and how long it runs. And speaking
- 32:24Speaker 1: as somebody who just replaced his furnace an air conditioner,
- 32:28Speaker 1: let me just assure you. You know, even just from
- 32:31Speaker 1: an economical standpoint, you want your HVAC system to run
- 32:35Speaker 1: as long as possible. So if changing your furnace filters
- 32:38Speaker 1: regularly is going to help you eke out even just
- 32:40Speaker 1: a couple more months out of the thing, it's worth it,
- 32:43Speaker 1: all right. So change your furnace filters. There, done right, No,
- 32:47Speaker 1: not so fast. There's something really interesting about the seemingly
- 32:51Speaker 1: simple no brainer project. And here's the deal. I think
- 32:55Speaker 1: last year or so is when I stumbled on this.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I was listening to another home improvement show out there,
- 33:00Speaker 1: a national show, big time, right, so a competitor, and
- 33:04Speaker 1: I'm listening to what they're talking about and how they're
- 33:06Speaker 1: doing it. And in the midst of all of that,
- 33:08Speaker 1: I listen to this caller who's having a problem with
- 33:11Speaker 1: dust in his home. Now, he had his ducts cleaned,
- 33:14Speaker 1: you know, his ducts, his air ducts, not his quack ducks,
- 33:17Speaker 1: his air ducks. He swapped out his furnace filters for
- 33:20Speaker 1: better ones, and then he went a step further and
- 33:22Speaker 1: then doubled up those furnace filters. But he was still
- 33:25Speaker 1: battling dust. So he's got that issue going on. In
- 33:28Speaker 1: the show's experts give him two main recommendations. First off,
- 33:32Speaker 1: he can install a whole house air purifying system, or
- 33:35Speaker 1: he can switch to furnace filters with a higher NERVE rating. Now,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I love that it's a nerve rating, MERV. MERV. It's
- 33:43Speaker 1: a great name. You know. I picture an older guy,
- 33:46Speaker 1: kind of a happy face, probably a bigger than usual nose,
- 33:49Speaker 1: but just the kind of guy you want to talk to. MERV.
- 33:52Speaker 1: I love it, love that name. If you're in the
- 33:55Speaker 1: situation where maybe your kids are looking for a name,
- 33:58Speaker 1: a baby name, maybe you are looking for a baby name,
- 34:02Speaker 1: MERV just saying, just throwing it out there. I haven't
- 34:06Speaker 1: claimed it. I don't have that situation coming up, but
- 34:09Speaker 1: if you do, nerv might be might be something. Anyway. Unfortunately,
- 34:14Speaker 1: nerve ratings have nothing to do with people name MERV,
- 34:18Speaker 1: with the name with anything that I just talked about,
- 34:20Speaker 1: But there's still important and sometimes they can be a
- 34:24Speaker 1: little misunderstood, not unlike you know, real life nerves. But anyway,
- 34:29Speaker 1: let's explain what a NERVE rating is. Most modern furnace
- 34:32Speaker 1: filters are going to have a NERVE rating on the packaging. Now,
- 34:36Speaker 1: that rating stands for the minimum efficiency reporting value which
- 34:40Speaker 1: sounds super fancy, right, but it's really really, really straightforward.
- 34:44Speaker 1: It's just a measure of how effectively a filter traps
- 34:48Speaker 1: dust and other particles before they make their way to
- 34:51Speaker 1: your HVAC system. Now, something that may or may not
- 34:53Speaker 1: be news to you initially. You know, years and years back,
- 34:56Speaker 1: that was news to me. Your furnace filter is primarily
- 35:00Speaker 1: there to protect your equipment. It's not there to filter
- 35:03Speaker 1: the air going into your home. It doesn't do that
- 35:05Speaker 1: at all, or at least if there is an impact
- 35:07Speaker 1: on air quality, it's kind of a bonus effect. But
- 35:09Speaker 1: the main purpose of the filters in our systems is
- 35:13Speaker 1: to protect the equipment, all right, would that be in
- 35:15Speaker 1: the case. We can see that the recommendation of the
- 35:17Speaker 1: other you know, the competitive National Home Improvement show. We
- 35:21Speaker 1: can see that their recommendation, while it may not be
- 35:23Speaker 1: great for reducing dust in the home, it's certainly probably
- 35:26Speaker 1: not a bad recommendation, right. You know, if the color
- 35:29Speaker 1: goes with a filter with a higher nerve rating, it
- 35:32Speaker 1: may not dramatically improve the air quality in his home,
- 35:36Speaker 1: but at least at least the better filter is surely
- 35:38Speaker 1: going to remove more and more particles and protect the
- 35:41Speaker 1: equipment longer, right, Well, that's where this gets even more interesting.
- 35:45Speaker 1: It turns out that the higher nerve filter can actually
- 35:48Speaker 1: cause problems. You know, as we just said, it will
- 35:50Speaker 1: definitely trap more contaminants, but it's also going to restrict airflow.
- 35:54Speaker 1: And good airflow is pretty much the lifeblood of any
- 35:58Speaker 1: efficient HVACS system. You know, when you cut that down,
- 36:02Speaker 1: you can actually reduce your indoor air quality and also
- 36:05Speaker 1: end up putting a strain on your system, leading to
- 36:07Speaker 1: potential breakdowns or higher energy costs. You know, your system
- 36:11Speaker 1: needs to be able to breathe think about it that way,
- 36:13Speaker 1: and you're restricting that by slapping this overly restrictive filter
- 36:17Speaker 1: on it. You know, it's a simplified way to think
- 36:19Speaker 1: about it, but I think it helps. So the idea
- 36:21Speaker 1: that upping your nerve rating on your filters is magically
- 36:24Speaker 1: going to solve your dust issues, well it turns out
- 36:26Speaker 1: it's really not that simple. In fact, putting in an
- 36:29Speaker 1: air filter with a nerve rating higher than what your
- 36:31Speaker 1: system really calls for actually can be kind of harmful.
- 36:34Speaker 1: It can be a case of trying to fix one
- 36:36Speaker 1: problem and you know, creating another, potentially bigger one. So
- 36:42Speaker 1: what do you do well? I guess a number of
- 36:45Speaker 1: things here. If we're talking about the dust problem in
- 36:48Speaker 1: the home, if you're set on better air quality, I
- 36:50Speaker 1: guess the first thing I would do is just check
- 36:52Speaker 1: to see if there are other options that can help
- 36:54Speaker 1: you out, you know, dig into room air purifiers, small
- 36:57Speaker 1: scale or better yet, like that National show recommended, look
- 37:01Speaker 1: into whole house purifier options, ask about them, find out
- 37:04Speaker 1: what works for your budget, what works for your situation.
- 37:08Speaker 1: Maybe there's something out there, or it may be worth
- 37:10Speaker 1: it to ask an expert about duct cleaning, you know,
- 37:13Speaker 1: to find out if that's something that could help your situation.
- 37:15Speaker 1: In the instance that we talked about, it doesn't seem
- 37:18Speaker 1: like it was the solution, but for you it might be.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Now another thing to think about if you're not sure
- 37:23Speaker 1: which MERV rating is best for your system, or maybe
- 37:26Speaker 1: if you've previously swapped out your air filters and installed
- 37:30Speaker 1: new ones based on finding ones with the highest nerve rating,
- 37:33Speaker 1: thinking that you're doing a good job. If that's your
- 37:36Speaker 1: situation and you're not sure which one you should go with,
- 37:39Speaker 1: you could first check the owner's manual, you know, the
- 37:41Speaker 1: manual for your furnace, for your HVAC system and if
- 37:44Speaker 1: that doesn't work, you could always reach out to your
- 37:46Speaker 1: HVAC specialist. They'll let you know what merv range is
- 37:49Speaker 1: say for your specific system and get you back on track.
- 37:52Speaker 1: One last thing to think about here, just remember more
- 37:55Speaker 1: isn't always better. Over Restricting airflow can lead to more
- 37:58Speaker 1: problems than it solves, and that's going to do it.
- 38:01Speaker 1: That's all the time we've got. Thanks for tuning in
- 38:04Speaker 1: every week and for telling others to check out the show.
