- 0:08Speaker 3: Here you're gonna hear from my alma maters, Queen's College,
- 0:12Speaker 3: and yes, the Viscardi Center, But I want to first
- 0:16Speaker 3: start out on the sports side of things. Thanking Zach Ivkevic,
- 0:22Speaker 3: Gail Marquis, and the current CEO of the New York
- 0:26Speaker 3: City Basketball Hall of Fame, Michael T. Cohen, for making
- 0:29Speaker 3: Last Night Special at the Barkley Center this past Thursday,
- 0:36Speaker 3: where we got to see I believe, nine more inductees
- 0:41Speaker 3: into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame, including
- 0:44Speaker 3: Joe the Destroyer Hammond, Ronnie Nunn and a legendary NBA
- 0:49Speaker 3: official and a New York City basketball icon, and Tina Charles,
- 0:58Speaker 3: who is a former New York liber and a few more.
- 1:02Speaker 2: Along the way at Cardozo High School alum Lauren McGill.
- 1:10Speaker 3: And I got to catch up with someone who I've
- 1:12Speaker 3: known since I was about twenty years old, Gail Marquie.
- 1:16Speaker 3: Now you know the Queen's College basketball history, you know,
- 1:21Speaker 3: Gail Marquis is part of that legendary nineteen seventy two
- 1:26Speaker 3: squad which broke a lot of ground for women's basketball
- 1:30Speaker 3: they played the first game at Madison Square Garden against
- 1:34Speaker 3: I Mochilata. They were a winning team. They also were
- 1:39Speaker 3: the team that Howie Rose broke in with as an
- 1:42Speaker 3: announcer back in nineteen seventy two, and now he's celebrating
- 1:48Speaker 3: fifty years of radio. But as far as Queen's College
- 1:52Speaker 3: alumn go, it's a very esteemed class to be part of.
- 1:58Speaker 3: And I want to get you yeah to my conversation
- 2:01Speaker 3: during the Liberty game with Gail Marquis up in one
- 2:05Speaker 3: of the suites at the Barclay Center. It was such
- 2:08Speaker 3: a special night and she and Zach Ibkevic, a former
- 2:12Speaker 3: CuNi Athletic commissioner, talked about what it means to revitalize
- 2:21Speaker 3: the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame. Take a
- 2:25Speaker 3: listen to this awesomeness right here in game, by the way,
- 2:29Speaker 3: so that the audio it's real time, baby, it's real
- 2:33Speaker 3: time right at the you know, almost the court side.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Sound like watching the Liberty and talking to Gail Marquis,
- 2:41Speaker 3: who waited on. Yes, even today's stars like Caitlin Clark
- 2:44Speaker 3: and injuries.
- 2:45Speaker 2: Take a listen all right.
- 2:50Speaker 3: One of my mentors from Queen's College, a fellow Queen's
- 2:53Speaker 3: College alone and of course a legendary member of NYC
- 2:56Speaker 3: Basketball Hall of Fame, Gail Marquee Is within the year tonight,
- 3:00Speaker 3: what to mean to be here out of the oswall
- 3:02Speaker 3: fame and see he's inductees going tonight.
- 3:05Speaker 4: No, it's so nice or he's so proud of the
- 3:08Speaker 4: two women that are going in, Lauren Cargill as well
- 3:12Speaker 4: as Tina.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Tina Charles.
- 3:15Speaker 4: I'm sorry, we're really always happy in and just to
- 3:18Speaker 4: see the next class of the women going in. I
- 3:21Speaker 4: went in in two thousand and nine. Prior to that
- 3:23Speaker 4: was Lucille Cavalis. After me came the names like Debbie
- 3:27Speaker 4: Mason and even on our Queen's College team that played
- 3:30Speaker 4: at Madison Square Gardens and our teams that you had
- 3:33Speaker 4: a great one at the NCAA Championship. So I continue
- 3:37Speaker 4: to be supportive of women women basketball in the game.
- 3:40Speaker 1: By the way, the Liberty had done a hell of
- 3:42Speaker 1: the year.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Your thoughts on Kaylyn Clark taking this entire.
- 3:45Speaker 4: League by Stormlane, Oh, wonderful, wonderful between Caitlyn and that
- 3:50Speaker 4: whole class.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Caitlyn Angel Reeves just named.
- 3:53Speaker 4: The whole list of young lady from Stamford I'm sorry,
- 3:56Speaker 4: I can't remember.
- 3:56Speaker 1: All the names, but just his class have beenductees.
- 3:59Speaker 4: They this league is finally getting its praise, it's awareness,
- 4:04Speaker 4: twenty five, twenty six years later.
- 4:07Speaker 1: But we've always been here.
- 4:08Speaker 4: I'm not jealous of a Kaitlyn Clark or angel of
- 4:11Speaker 4: a young one.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I'm glad they finally shine a light on this league.
- 4:15Speaker 3: Let me ask you about your teammate, Donna or Render,
- 4:18Speaker 3: also a Queen's College Hall of Famer by the will.
- 4:22Speaker 1: When she was part of it, when she was commissioner.
- 4:24Speaker 4: Well, I'm proud of be aware when you oh Man
- 4:27Speaker 4: Queen's College in the house at Madison's Square Garden and
- 4:30Speaker 4: commissioner I used to call a commissioner. She said, no,
- 4:33Speaker 4: David Stern as a commissioner. I'm the president, I said, commissioner.
- 4:38Speaker 4: So proud of her.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Now, you know what Rob Troble did is they actually
- 4:41Speaker 3: put your your likeness is up.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Putting the raptors at Queen Scott. Did you see that?
- 4:47Speaker 4: No, but he had been asking me questions. I haven't
- 4:50Speaker 4: been back to see it.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Yet, you know, no, Okay, Zach Carlon, he is Zach
- 4:57Speaker 3: Ekspervicer's with me as well?
- 4:59Speaker 1: What does that mean to you?
- 5:00Speaker 5: What does what mean to me?
- 5:03Speaker 3: Ah?
- 5:03Speaker 5: Come on, you're talking about legends of New York City
- 5:06Speaker 5: basketball in one place. What does it mean? It means
- 5:10Speaker 5: the world to recognize them in such a great fashion,
- 5:13Speaker 5: even a small token of our appreciation, that they feel
- 5:17Speaker 5: that they see how much they mean to the community,
- 5:20Speaker 5: how much they mean to New York City. It means
- 5:23Speaker 5: the world. It means the world to me lit alone.
- 5:25Speaker 5: I hope it means that much more to them because
- 5:27Speaker 5: it's their life's work. And ninety nine percent of the
- 5:31Speaker 5: time on behalf of others, on, behalf of those that
- 5:35Speaker 5: can't help themselves. So these are selfless people that have
- 5:39Speaker 5: given of themselves the entire lives. So you can't ask
- 5:43Speaker 5: for more than for us to show a little bit
- 5:45Speaker 5: of our appreciation, and we thank you for being here,
- 5:48Speaker 5: and we're so proud of them.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Let me ask you this, to both.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Of you, Gail and Zach, continuing the legacy of the
- 5:54Speaker 3: Tall Baby, what's next?
- 5:55Speaker 1: Like, what's the next steps?
- 5:57Speaker 5: Well, we wanted to grow, we wanted to back where
- 5:59Speaker 5: it's been, where it was and bigger. So quite frankly,
- 6:03Speaker 5: this is a way to get back into it, to
- 6:06Speaker 5: show first step, and then it should be the first
- 6:09Speaker 5: step of many in a positive direction. I mean, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 5: part of my involvement, and I know Gail's is always
- 6:16Speaker 5: is how to do things bigger and better.
- 6:17Speaker 1: So next one is better be grand.
- 6:20Speaker 4: Yes, And there are so many names we had that
- 6:23Speaker 4: stop maybe five or seven years because of COVID and
- 6:26Speaker 4: other things.
- 6:26Speaker 1: But we've left off so many.
- 6:29Speaker 4: Names and I've always had them at the top of
- 6:31Speaker 4: my list. Number one probably Suever out of Christ the King.
- 6:34Speaker 4: You know, she'll be one I'm looking to get in.
- 6:36Speaker 4: And so many other guys as well, so and coaches.
- 6:40Speaker 4: There's just a lot of names to keep pulling in
- 6:42Speaker 4: and it's a great legacy and it's just something special
- 6:45Speaker 4: when you start to do things for others. And that's
- 6:48Speaker 4: what you're doing when you represent your country, your neighborhood,
- 6:52Speaker 4: your college, and you're representing that you come into that body,
- 6:56Speaker 4: you represent your country.
- 6:58Speaker 1: It's a beautiful thing. Yeah, here tonight as well. What
- 7:02Speaker 1: you've been doing great as a CEO.
- 7:05Speaker 5: Oh listen, we got a good team. Michael is certainly
- 7:08Speaker 5: a big part of that. He does a lot of
- 7:10Speaker 5: great work. But to Gail's point, we have a you
- 7:14Speaker 5: know a backlog of people of seven eight years that
- 7:20Speaker 5: we need to induct, and we know in our selection
- 7:23Speaker 5: this year was tough. You know, we had too many names,
- 7:25Speaker 5: and we say, okay, let's not pretend that we're not
- 7:28Speaker 5: gonna have future years.
- 7:29Speaker 1: This is not the only one.
- 7:30Speaker 5: So this is just a rebirth and starting fresh and
- 7:34Speaker 5: we're gonna keep growing.
- 7:35Speaker 1: And there's a bunch of.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Watch that we're inducted tonight.
- 7:38Speaker 1: Oh, it's definitely definitely watch them. Some of them we
- 7:41Speaker 1: grew up with. You know, you idolize and you watch
- 7:44Speaker 1: their work. So it's wonderful.
- 7:46Speaker 4: And I like that we're here at the Barcley Center,
- 7:48Speaker 4: so you know, it's more than just a chicken dinner
- 7:51Speaker 4: at one of the clubs. It is great that you
- 7:54Speaker 4: can present these these Hall of Famers in front of
- 7:56Speaker 4: a vast audience of fifteen and I don't.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Know how many here at Midcoin's court. Let them have
- 8:02Speaker 1: their due.
- 8:03Speaker 3: When you guys were inducted as a class in seventy
- 8:05Speaker 3: you know, seventy two team, we were inducted as basically
- 8:09Speaker 3: a team.
- 8:09Speaker 1: What was that like? What was that moment?
- 8:10Speaker 4: Like? It was first of all, it was great to
- 8:13Speaker 4: get back with my teammates as I was a freshman
- 8:16Speaker 4: sophomore when we were on that run, and many of
- 8:20Speaker 4: them have moved, had moved other parts of the state.
- 8:23Speaker 4: It was first of all a wonderful reunion of coaches
- 8:26Speaker 4: and players.
- 8:27Speaker 1: And then just.
- 8:28Speaker 4: To see that, I mean, we did that task in
- 8:30Speaker 4: nineteen seventy two, seventy three.
- 8:33Speaker 1: We got inducted a good forty years later.
- 8:35Speaker 4: Just that the work that we had done stood the
- 8:38Speaker 4: texts of time. There's not the team who had done
- 8:40Speaker 4: what we had done.
- 8:41Speaker 1: All the manors were in a great job keep from
- 8:43Speaker 1: the legacy alive the ball. I think, yes, yes, I agree, Yeah,
- 8:46Speaker 1: I want to thank you.
- 8:47Speaker 6: Could you basically took me on your way When I
- 8:50Speaker 6: thank you, Oh you're welcoming, and you pop up at
- 8:53Speaker 6: the Barclay and there and here you are wonderful, You're welcome.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Keep rolling, man, I mean, it is listening back to that,
- 9:00Speaker 3: it's a little goosebumps because we're talking about the history
- 9:06Speaker 3: of Queen's College, our alma mater. Something fifteen years ago.
- 9:11Speaker 3: Doors were just starting.
- 9:15Speaker 2: To get open.
- 9:16Speaker 3: As a freshman, the WQMC radio show was just starting
- 9:20Speaker 3: around this time.
- 9:22Speaker 2: On October fifteenth, fifteen, years.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Ago and now here we are talking to Gail Marquis,
- 9:27Speaker 3: a friend, a longtime friend, and an esteemed member of
- 9:32Speaker 3: the Queen's College alumni.
- 9:33Speaker 2: I mean, this is special. It's special too, and I had.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Her on a few years ago too, but it's just
- 9:40Speaker 3: special to see her every time we do. We did
- 9:44Speaker 3: a panel with how We Rose, Michael Weissman and at
- 9:52Speaker 3: the time the legal counsel of NBA, Harvey Benjamin, all
- 9:55Speaker 3: Queen's College graduates and I was I want to say
- 10:00Speaker 3: twenty tennis, maybe even a freshman that year getting introduced
- 10:06Speaker 3: by James Miskins.
- 10:07Speaker 2: I mean, this was this that was such a special moment,
- 10:12Speaker 2: and now.
- 10:13Speaker 3: Fifteen years later to see her again, it brought back
- 10:16Speaker 3: all those memories and I just think about it and
- 10:24Speaker 3: I think the people like Gail Marky, who has helped
- 10:27Speaker 3: advance this journey through her support the last fifteen years.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Well, I'm Alex Garrett. Thanks again to Michael T.
- 10:40Speaker 3: Cohen Zach of The Basketball of Game, Ben Keller as
- 10:48Speaker 3: well for hosting us last night at the Barclays. I
- 10:52Speaker 3: know they had a big reception earlier in the day,
- 10:54Speaker 3: which unfortunately I was not able to be at. But
- 11:00Speaker 3: to see a few of those folks that got inducted
- 11:03Speaker 3: to be the court side as are being inducted. That
- 11:06Speaker 3: was a special moment. And maybe we'll get Michael On
- 11:11Speaker 3: and others on who were inducted for a further conversation
- 11:14Speaker 3: down the road. How cool would that be as the
- 11:17Speaker 3: New York City Basketball Hall of Fame is alive and
- 11:21Speaker 3: well and revitalized, and we got to keep an eye.
- 11:24Speaker 2: On it and help them have one leg up.
- 11:27Speaker 3: In that space of New York City. Talk to you
- 11:31Speaker 3: soon and stay tuned for another trip down memory lane
- 11:36Speaker 3: with Viscardi Center board member Ken Counkin, who talks about
- 11:43Speaker 3: how doctor Viscardi gave him his start at the Viscardi
- 11:46Speaker 3: Center when it was abilities back in the seventies. So
- 11:50Speaker 3: much more to come on the One Leg Up Podcast.
- 11:52Speaker 3: Thanks for joining this network each and every time. I
- 11:55Speaker 3: appreciate you listening, and we'll talk to you soon. On
- 11:58Speaker 3: One Leg Up with Alex Garrett,
