- 0:08Speaker 1: Good morning, Mafia! It's Wednesday, September 16th, and this is
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Morning Charge, your daily 10-minute or less Buffalo Bills
- 0:17Speaker 1: news hit. I'm Aaron Quinn, here with Colin Ritchie, bringing
- 0:20Speaker 1: you everything you need to know before you start your day.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Let's get right into it. When the Bills step onto
- 0:26Speaker 1: the field this week, it marks only the third time
- 0:28Speaker 1: in franchise history that the team has inaugurated a new
- 0:30Speaker 1: home venue. Go back, September 18th, 1960. The Bills hosted
- 0:36Speaker 1: the Denver Broncos in the first ever game at War
- 0:38Speaker 1: Memorial Stadium, better known as the Rock Pile. Buffalo dropped
- 0:42Speaker 1: that AFL opener 27-21, but it planted a flag for
- 0:46Speaker 1: professional football in western New York. Thirteen years later, on
- 0:49Speaker 1: September 30, 1973, Buffalo opened Rich Stadium against division rival
- 0:55Speaker 1: New York Jets. That one was a gritty 9-7 defensive
- 0:58Speaker 1: slugfest highlighted by O.J. Simpson's 123 rushing yards on his
- 1:00Speaker 1: way to the iconic 2,000-yard season. Now, decades later, the
- 1:07Speaker 1: standard moves across the street into a state-of-the-art facility at
- 1:10Speaker 1: new Highmark Stadium. Speaking of the new stadium, the NFL
- 1:14Speaker 1: Network announced a two-part documentary series, Building Buffalo, debuting Thursday
- 1:18Speaker 1: night at 7 p.m. ahead of the stadium opener. Deion
- 1:21Speaker 1: Dawkins is the executive producer on the project, which highlights
- 1:24Speaker 1: trade workers and laborers who built the new stadium alongside
- 1:27Speaker 1: current former players including Thurman Thomas, Andre Reid, Steve Tasker,
- 1:32Speaker 1: DeMar Hamlin, Dawson Knox, DJ Moore, and others.
- 1:36Speaker 2: Let's check in on where the Buffalo Bills rank among
- 1:39Speaker 2: NFL stats around the league. Josh Allen currently ranks fourth
- 1:43Speaker 2: in passing yards with 334, trailing Bryce Young, Jordan Love,
- 1:47Speaker 2: and Tyler Shuck. Allen's two passing and two rushing touchdowns
- 1:51Speaker 2: gave him four total to open up the season, matching
- 1:54Speaker 2: Bryce Young, Trevor Lawrence, and Caleb Williams, who hold a
- 1:57Speaker 2: tie for the top spot in that category. James Cook
- 2:00Speaker 2: was limited to just 57 rushing yards against Houston, placing
- 2:03Speaker 2: him 20th after week one. Kansas City's Kenneth Walker leads
- 2:07Speaker 2: that category after a strong 173-yard performance on Monday Night Football.
- 2:12Speaker 2: Dalton Kincaid and DJ Moore were two of just seven
- 2:15Speaker 2: players to reach 100 receiving yards in Week 1. Kincaid
- 2:19Speaker 2: ranks first among tight ends and fifth among all receivers
- 2:22Speaker 2: with 130 receiving yards. He trails only Jalen Coker, Christian Watson,
- 2:26Speaker 2: Zay Flowers, and Chris Olave. Jackson Smith and Jigba and
- 2:29Speaker 2: DJ Moore round out the group of players to reach
- 2:32Speaker 2: triple digits last week. On the defensive side, Greg Rousseau
- 2:36Speaker 2: was one of seven players to record two sacks, joining
- 2:39Speaker 2: names like T.J. Watt and Aidan Hutchinson in Week 1.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Rousseau was also the only player to force two fumbles,
- 2:45Speaker 2: so he currently leads the league in that category. Terrell
- 2:48Speaker 2: Bernard tallied 12 tackles against the Texans, the eighth most
- 2:52Speaker 2: in the NFL. And Tyler Bass is currently tied for
- 2:55Speaker 2: third with his three field goals made on Sunday.
- 2:58Speaker 1: Bills head coach Joe Brady held his final press conference
- 3:01Speaker 1: before Thursday Night Football. and the team actually held today's
- 3:04Speaker 1: walkthrough inside Highmark Stadium. Brady said he wanted the players,
- 3:08Speaker 1: especially new additions like Greg Dortch, who have never stepped inside,
- 3:12Speaker 1: to get a feel for the stadium and switch up
- 3:14Speaker 1: the scenery on a long day and a short week.
- 3:17Speaker 1: As for the natural grass field, Brady shut down any concerns.
- 3:21Speaker 1: He praised Bill's leadership for taking the initiative to relay
- 3:23Speaker 1: the turf to ensure the best possible surface, saying the
- 3:26Speaker 1: guys are thrilled to play on grass, and there will
- 3:29Speaker 1: be zero issues when it comes to Thursday night. When
- 3:32Speaker 1: asked if there's any fear of Josh Allen or the
- 3:34Speaker 1: team trying to, quote, put on a show for the
- 3:36Speaker 1: stadium opener, Brady gave a firm no. He said the
- 3:40Speaker 1: standard doesn't change based on the venue. And if they
- 3:43Speaker 1: make Thursday Night Football about anything more than just being
- 3:46Speaker 1: the next game on the schedule, it usually doesn't end
- 3:48Speaker 1: with the right result. Brady compared the noise dynamics to
- 3:52Speaker 1: last week, saying, In Houston, the offense had to handle
- 3:55Speaker 1: the noise. This week, our defense has to be poised
- 3:57Speaker 1: in the noise. He wants the city and the fan
- 4:00Speaker 1: base to enjoy the night they deserve. But for the team,
- 4:03Speaker 1: the goal isn't putting on a show. It's putting on
- 4:05Speaker 1: a clinic. On the personnel front, Brady explained why cornerback
- 4:09Speaker 1: Davison Igmenoso rotated series with Max Harrison in week one.
- 4:13Speaker 1: With the defense playing over 80 snaps in Houston, Brady
- 4:16Speaker 1: stressed that getting your young secondary depth live reps in
- 4:19Speaker 1: early season prevents guys from coming in cold later in
- 4:21Speaker 1: the year. He made it clear that Igmenoso playing well
- 4:24Speaker 1: in camp helped earn those reps, and it was not
- 4:27Speaker 1: a reflection of Harrison's play. Brady also praised Frank Gore Jr.
- 4:31Speaker 1: for stepping in when Ty Johnson went down, pointing out
- 4:34Speaker 1: that Gore made key blocks and had a critical reception
- 4:36Speaker 1: on the game-winning drive. Brady said that Gore constantly does
- 4:40Speaker 1: things the right way and has earned his 100%. Brady
- 4:43Speaker 1: gave a fantastic breakdown on why the Bills were running
- 4:45Speaker 1: more under-center concepts. He explained that operating under-center takes stress
- 4:49Speaker 1: off the offensive line, slows down the opponent's pass rush,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and makes the offense unpredictable by allowing runs and play
- 4:56Speaker 1: action in any direction. Combine that with Josh Allen averaging
- 4:59Speaker 1: over 25 yards per completion on two separate 96-yard drives
- 5:03Speaker 1: in Week 1. And Brady emphasized that when defenses try
- 5:06Speaker 1: to jump those under-center looks, Josh Allen has the full
- 5:10Speaker 1: green-light authority to, quote, be a sniper downfield. When asked
- 5:15Speaker 1: about Buffalo's roster during his press conference, the first thing
- 5:18Speaker 1: Lions head coach Dan Campbell mentioned was the team's trio
- 5:21Speaker 1: of tight ends. He specifically referenced Jackson Hawes and his
- 5:24Speaker 1: ability to block, Dalton Kincaid's mismatch ability as a pass catcher,
- 5:29Speaker 1: and Dawson Knox's jack-of-all-trades versatility that can do anything the
- 5:33Speaker 1: Bills need him to do. Campbell recognizes that Thursday will
- 5:36Speaker 1: be a special night for Bills fans and actually compared
- 5:39Speaker 1: the passion of Bills Mafia to that of Lions fans.
- 5:42Speaker 1: He's telling his players to embrace and enjoy that energy
- 5:46Speaker 1: while also making sure they keep their composure. When asked
- 5:49Speaker 1: about the last matchup between these two teams, a shootout
- 5:52Speaker 1: that saw 90 combined points Campbell mentioned that they were
- 5:55Speaker 1: too often exploited by QB runs, which is a focus
- 5:58Speaker 1: this week for their defense to contain. Khalil Shakir spoke
- 6:01Speaker 1: with the media today, expressing his excitement for the home
- 6:04Speaker 1: opener tomorrow night. He explained that the offense is confident
- 6:07Speaker 1: in each other, gets along really well, and described that
- 6:10Speaker 1: their vibe flows when the unit is rolling. For a
- 6:13Speaker 1: hometown kid like Joe Andreessen, he's got a unique perspective
- 6:16Speaker 1: on the meaning of the new stadium.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It's special, he said. Everyone knows how much the Bills
- 6:21Speaker 2: mean to everyone here. Linebacker Dorian Williams is expecting an
- 6:25Speaker 2: electric crowd on Thursday night and said that the new
- 6:28Speaker 2: grass felt great for him and looked great too. Williams
- 6:31Speaker 2: believes pre- and post-snap communication is something the defense can
- 6:35Speaker 2: and will improve on from their game in Houston, which
- 6:38Speaker 2: should help the unit limit explosive plays in the future.
- 6:41Speaker 2: He also referenced now having a week of film to
- 6:44Speaker 2: study how they were attacked and what a useful resource
- 6:47Speaker 2: that is heading into week two. Greg Russo is ready
- 6:50Speaker 2: for the energy and crowd noise for the home opener
- 6:53Speaker 2: and likes the new grass on the field. He mentioned
- 6:56Speaker 2: Detroit's weapons on offense, citing their ability to run and
- 6:59Speaker 2: throw effectively thanks to their versatility.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Now to the injury report. Turning over to the opposition,
- 7:05Speaker 1: Detroit released Tuesday's practice report ahead of Thursday night football.
- 7:09Speaker 1: There are a couple of key names to monitor on
- 7:11Speaker 1: a short rest week. First up, rookie right tackle Blake
- 7:14Speaker 1: Miller remained out of practice with a knee injury. Miller
- 7:17Speaker 1: got the start in Detroit's Week 1 opener, so missing
- 7:20Speaker 1: back-to-back walkthroughs on a short week puts his availability in
- 7:23Speaker 1: serious doubt for Thursday night. Guard Christian Mahogany also missed
- 7:28Speaker 1: his second straight session with a hip issue. If Miller
- 7:31Speaker 1: can't suit up, Greg Russo and the Bills' pass rushers
- 7:34Speaker 1: might get a big opportunity to exploit this Detroit offensive line.
- 7:38Speaker 1: On the defensive side, starting cornerback D.J. Reid was added
- 7:41Speaker 1: to the injury report as a limited participant with a
- 7:43Speaker 1: foot issue. Reed played through week one, but any limitation
- 7:47Speaker 1: to his foot on a short week is a storyline
- 7:49Speaker 1: to keep an eye on. Also, interior lineman Drew Shruggs
- 7:54Speaker 1: was limited again with a knee, while safety Christian Azizan
- 7:59Speaker 1: was a full participant with a groin injury. As a
- 8:02Speaker 1: quick reminder for anyone looking at Detroit's injury report and
- 8:05Speaker 1: wondering where star safeties are, both Brian Branch and Kirby
- 8:08Speaker 1: Joseph started the season on the reserve slash pup list.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Branch is still working his way back from a torn Achilles,
- 8:14Speaker 1: and Joseph is dealing with a knee issue, meaning both
- 8:17Speaker 1: starting safeties are out for the game and will not
- 8:19Speaker 1: be eligible to return until at least week five, primarily
- 8:22Speaker 1: by illness rather than a setback with his knee. Still,
- 8:25Speaker 1: it's something to keep an eye on. In the secondary,
- 8:28Speaker 1: safety Cole Bishop saw his status downgraded from full on Monday,
- 8:32Speaker 1: where it was just an estimation of a practice, to
- 8:34Speaker 1: limited on Tuesday, as he works through a knee and
- 8:37Speaker 1: groin issue. Rounding out the rest of the report, Linebacker
- 8:41Speaker 1: Terrell Bernard remained limited with his calf issue, and running
- 8:44Speaker 1: back Ty Johnson was limited once again with a hamstring. Meanwhile,
- 8:48Speaker 1: outside linebacker Bradley Chubb with a thumb and defensive back
- 8:51Speaker 1: Jordan Hancock with a quad were both full participants for
- 8:54Speaker 1: the second straight day. That's going to do it for
- 8:58Speaker 1: today's edition of the Morning Charge. Make sure you hit
- 9:00Speaker 1: that subscribe button, leave us a five-star review, and share
- 9:03Speaker 1: the show with a fellow Bills fan. For Colin Ritchie,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'm Aaron Quinn. Have a great day, and go Bills!
