- 0:00No, when I say no, you turn back around.
- 0:05Hey, I'm going to be dead in a few hours.
- 0:08So before I go, let's have this out, you and me, once and for
- 0:11all. Winning.
- 0:18Is that what you think it's about?
- 0:21I'm not trying to win. I'm not doing this because I
- 0:24want to beat someone, because I hate someone, or because because
- 0:28I want to blame someone. It's not because it's fun.
- 0:31God knows it's not because it's easy.
- 0:33It's not even because it works, because it hardly ever does.
- 0:36I do what I do because it's right, because it's decent, and
- 0:41above all, it's kind. It's just that.
- 0:52Just kind. If I run away today, good
- 0:59people. Will die if I stand and fight.
- 1:02Some of them might live, maybe not many, maybe not for long.
- 1:07Hey, you know, maybe there's no point in any of this at all, but
- 1:10it's the best I can do, So I'm going to do it, and I will stand
- 1:14here doing it till it kills me. You're going to die too,
- 1:21someday. Welcome back to Strictly Cum
- 2:00Hamster. My name is Joe Ford and together
- 2:03today I have assembled a group of the largest, the most
- 2:08excitable Peter Capaldi fans. Is that how you say his name?
- 2:12Capaldi. Capaldi, 12th Doctor fans that
- 2:15you could possibly meet? Now, what retrobates do I have
- 2:19in front of me here? Let's find out.
- 2:21Well, from trap one, Mr. Mark McManus.
- 2:24Hello. Hello, thanks for having me
- 2:26back. Now please, in one word, sum up
- 2:29your feelings on Peter Capaldi. One word.
- 2:33Brilliant. Oh, that's a good word.
- 2:37Unfortunately, Fraser Gregory is also with us here today.
- 2:40Hello, Fraser. Well, good evening, Joe.
- 2:42How are you today? Yeah, I'm fine.
- 2:45Would you sum up the 12th Doctor in one word for me, please?
- 2:49Yeah, you're going to ask us this.
- 2:50And it really kind of flungsters a little bit because what I was
- 2:54trying to think of that sort of raw, unfiltered side of him that
- 3:00I really enjoy, but that kind of misses out that fire that he's
- 3:04got that passion, that loyalty, that fierceness about him.
- 3:07So in the end I just went with the the obvious 1 and I'm going
- 3:10to say Scottish. You couldn't just say one word,
- 3:15could you? Of.
- 3:16Course not. The most and I'll met him for
- 3:19the first time in the flesh this weekend, the beautiful Mr. Dan
- 3:24Pitt. Hello, Dan.
- 3:25Hello Joe, Thanks for having me. And Dan, would you please
- 3:29summarise the 12th Doctor in one word for me, please?
- 3:31I realise that's difficult with a complex character like this.
- 3:35Alien. That's a good one.
- 3:39That is a good one, and reasonably new to a hamster with
- 3:45a blood pen knife. But banging her way through
- 3:49Gallifrey interviewees right now.
- 3:51Hello, Jumana. Hey I've.
- 3:54Realised this is a tough sort of question, but one word.
- 3:59The 12th Doctor. Transcendent.
- 4:04Oh yeah, sorry guys, your ones are out.
- 4:06That would be amazing. We are here today, now.
- 4:10We're not here to discover the best the 12th Doctor story
- 4:14because let's be honest, that really isn't the strictly come
- 4:17hands to format. But we will discover our
- 4:20favorite and the story that is going to kick through into the
- 4:24finale of grand finales as one story from each Doctor goes head
- 4:28to head and we find out who the hell is going to win this.
- 4:32Let's say what's the opposite of chart topping, chart bottoming
- 4:36list of stories. But to start us off, I would
- 4:44like to talk about the era as a whole.
- 4:48Yeah, so we're talking Season 8, Series 8, Series 9 and series
- 4:5210. Can I just have your overall
- 4:55thoughts on those three seasons? And let's go in the reverse
- 5:00order this time, Giovanna. Oh well, I think they are a very
- 5:08ambitious series of, well, series, series of seasons.
- 5:14I can never get them right anyway, one or one or the other.
- 5:17I think they make a very ambitious hole because it is a
- 5:20slow burn. And I know it starts off in a
- 5:23way that robbed a lot of people the wrong way.
- 5:26But I think you really have to see them as a whole because the
- 5:29evolution of the character is like, it never happened this way
- 5:34for any other Doctor before. So I think I find it a very,
- 5:38very impressive ensemble if you like, but definitely darker and
- 5:42more mature perhaps than we have seen previously.
- 5:46If I had to force you to put a pin in one season and say that's
- 5:52my favorite season. 09. 90 We're coming at this from very
- 5:58different angles. We're going to have a great
- 6:00conversation today, Dan, the era.
- 6:03What do you think? Yeah, I think it does the same
- 6:08as as the other Moffat era, the the the 11th Doctor one where I
- 6:13think it starts really strong, gets a bit flabby in the middle
- 6:18and and then kind of rallies round for and goes out on a
- 6:23high. So I, you know, I think I think
- 6:26with, with, with this, you know, the Peter Capaldi era, it's a
- 6:33season that feels like it was made for the fans rather than
- 6:36for the, the, the wider viewing audience.
- 6:40It feels much more. Yeah, it, it feels like Moffat
- 6:45is no longer worried about ratings or anything like that as
- 6:48long as he's telling good Doctor Who stories.
- 6:51And I think that's what he was aiming for here.
- 6:55And I think like, you know, like, like I say, I think like 8
- 6:59is a really strong opener. Obviously has a lot of
- 7:03similarities to the Colin Baker era.
- 7:05I suppose, you know, the the the doctor is you, you've had such a
- 7:09nice pleasant Dr. prior to this that you then had to have one
- 7:13that was a bit more spiky, a bit more edgy.
- 7:17So you you've got that kind of starting off and and as that and
- 7:20they get to do it that proper arc, really don't they, where
- 7:23those rough edges kind of get smoothed off and and by the end
- 7:27of it, you know, he's he's he's he's you know, he is the doctor
- 7:32and I think it's. What Colin wanted wasn't it.
- 7:34It's exactly what Colin wanted. Was like Mr. Darcy from
- 7:37unlikeable figure to hero, but it just didn't have.
- 7:41The time where? There's the time here, isn't it,
- 7:43to tell that story? Yeah, and you know, for me, I
- 7:46think like season 10 is peak, peak Moffett, not just peak
- 7:51Capaldi. And I think it that teacher and
- 7:58mentor and the student kind of aspect of it suits this Doctor
- 8:03really well. And I think, I mean, he has
- 8:07great, don't get me wrong, he has great chemistry with Clara,
- 8:11but but I think that that chemistry with Bill, I just, I
- 8:14just love that season that, you know, that those two paired up
- 8:17with and also with Nardo, not forgetting him.
- 8:20I just think it's a really strong, tireless team And and
- 8:22yeah, finishes really, really high in.
- 8:25Mr. University Lecturer. I mean, that's just gold, isn't
- 8:28it? Boy, if he'd been one of my
- 8:30lecturers back in the day, I might have actually paid
- 8:32attention to make money on podcasting, you know?
- 8:36Good grief. Well, Fraser, now, look, I just
- 8:38want to say to you. Right.
- 8:39Yeah, Obviously we've been podcasting quite a lot lately
- 8:41and having this sort of combative relationship.
- 8:44Yeah. I love you with all my heart,
- 8:46Fraser. Gregory, please tell me what you
- 8:49think of the 12 Doctors era. Succinctly, please.
- 8:53Succinctly. As an era, I think it's it's
- 8:55probably one of the most complex and sophisticated will you we've
- 8:59ever had in classic on you. You know, it's it's an era that
- 9:05more than any really gets under the skin of who the doctor is.
- 9:10You know, there's a lot of episodes, a lot of stuff going
- 9:12on that is really poke and a stick into the character of the
- 9:16Doctor. And you know, the scene, what
- 9:18what happens. It's, it's a funny one because I
- 9:24think there's a, a definite, you know, yes, he starts off very
- 9:29much as an unlikable character. And I don't think that's
- 9:33necessarily intentional. I could be wrong, but I don't
- 9:36think I've ever seen like an interview with Moffett, a
- 9:38Capaldi, where they've ever said, you know, this, this is
- 9:41what? You're doing to be a prick.
- 9:43Yeah. What we're doing to really hate
- 9:44him. Yeah.
- 9:45Is that. Well, you know, we we looked at
- 9:47season 22 and we thought that's great.
- 9:49That's, you know, I think. Similarities though, right?
- 9:52There are, there are, but I don't think it's intentional.
- 9:54I think what's happened more than anything, obviously without
- 9:56any to back this up, is that Peter Capaldi has been playing
- 10:00Cardinal Rush Lou before he comes in to Doctor Who.
- 10:03He's been playing Malcolm Tucker in The Thick of It and in The
- 10:07Loop before he comes in to Doctor Who.
- 10:09He's a known face. He's a known, well established,
- 10:12well respected actor and the writers initially can't see past
- 10:17that. And so they are writing, they
- 10:18are not writing for Doctor Who, they are writing for Peter
- 10:20Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker. So I think that really
- 10:25influences the first season. So you do see this kind of tail
- 10:29off and it works. It really does work as a
- 10:30character progression from, you know, really unfiltered, you
- 10:35know, just seeing exactly what you think's at the start of
- 10:37really soft and having that more, you know, professor
- 10:44student relationship with with Bill by the end.
- 10:48But I think as a result of that, what you see is the more
- 10:51likeable his character gets. Unfortunately, I think the
- 10:53quality of the rating goes down as well.
- 10:55So for me, I'm I'm a bigger fan of season of Series 8 than I am
- 10:59of 10, purely on the strength of the quality of the the
- 11:05individual stories in that you. Champion of the DAM for nothing
- 11:09today. Yeah, and also the arc as well.
- 11:12I think you know, the three arcs we get, you know, I would rate
- 11:16bottom of the pile has to be the hybrid because I still don't
- 11:18know who the hybrid is and I don't think anyone knows who the
- 11:20hybrid is. I think it might be the five of
- 11:22us, you know? It could well be standing
- 11:24standing in the ruins of hamster with a blood and pen knife.
- 11:26Yes, I think you know, after that you get the redemption of
- 11:31Missy. But the real arc, the real one
- 11:32that I keep coming back to time and time again, is is the
- 11:34tragedy of Danny Pink, which I made a good mind.
- 11:38That's that's not what series it's about.
- 11:40It's all about the relationship between Clara and Danny Pink and
- 11:43Clara and the Doctor and the Doctor and Danny Pink and that
- 11:46whole arc is just is it's brilliant for me, you know, it
- 11:49is. It's just you know, Moffett is
- 11:52the man that doesn't do characters, but it's so
- 11:55character driven is the 12th Doctors here.
- 11:58It's all about these relationships between him and
- 12:02Clara, him and Bill, him and Missy, him and Danny and.
- 12:07It's. I remember, you know, not liking
- 12:10them as much after Series 8. And I remember getting my Series
- 12:138 box set for Christmas and thinking, well, you know, I've
- 12:17only got this out of completeness.
- 12:18You know, I didn't quite enjoy that as much.
- 12:20And then I remember kind of thinking just after Christmas,
- 12:23I'm going to put some Doctor Who on.
- 12:24So, and I went straight for the series 8 box set and I put that
- 12:28on and I went started going back and I started rewatching.
- 12:30And over the years I've rewatched and I've rewatched.
- 12:33And the more you rewatch, I think this is any of that really
- 12:36rewards rewatching and, you know, doing a marathon or doing
- 12:41a doing it in order. And the more I've watched the
- 12:4412th Doctor, the more I absolutely adore.
- 12:47And I think no other doctor can really.
- 12:51Or here I really nails who the Doctor is as much as this one.
- 12:57Succinctly, I'll say that was. That was succinct.
- 13:02You should see the notes I've made.
- 13:04Please don't answer this because I don't want another lecture
- 13:06like that. But they said Steven Moffett
- 13:08can't do characters. Who says that?
- 13:11What a nonsense thing to say. Everyone, everyone says Moffett
- 13:15doesn't do character work. He does.
- 13:16He's all a plot and RTV he doesn't do plot, he just does
- 13:19characters. One of my favourite moments in
- 13:22all of Doctor Who comes from a Steven Moffett script featuring
- 13:26one of my least favorite characters of all time, together
- 13:29or not at all. Off the roof.
- 13:32Oh, it's amazing. Well, possibly the most
- 13:35devastatingly handsome man in all of Doctor Who podcasting,
- 13:39Mark McManus. What do you think of the 12th
- 13:42Doctor Zira? I love the 12th Doctor Zira.
- 13:45It's my favorite of the new series by by some way.
- 13:49I think the, the, I do really like the writing of all three
- 13:53seasons. I think that, you know, at the
- 13:56time there was, there was talk that Stephen Moffatt decided he
- 13:59wanted to slow things down a bit.
- 14:00He wanted to have longer scenes a bit kind of more in depth and
- 14:03that kind of thing. And just immediately right from
- 14:05deep breath just clicked with me.
- 14:08I I slightly disagree with the idea that he's an unpleasant,
- 14:15you know, kind of character right from the off.
- 14:17For me, I think the 9th Doctor is more spiky and unpleasant,
- 14:21but it never really seems to get picked up on.
- 14:24But I think maybe because he came first and then capacity
- 14:26became after tenant and Smith who he, you know, manic Pixie
- 14:33dream doctors sort of thing. So I think there was more of a
- 14:35contrast with what immediately came before.
- 14:38And I think Capaldi came with it.
- 14:40You know, he grew up with the first four doctors and that was
- 14:43what it was. We know it was a massive,
- 14:44massive fan of. And I don't think he's I think
- 14:46he's of that ilk and that that's why, again, it just is jazz for
- 14:51people with with the more recent doctors.
- 14:53But I don't think he's any more spiky for for using that word
- 14:58again. Dan, Dan, any of the first four
- 15:00doctors and and Colin Baker's who said so.
- 15:03I think he's yeah. I just think he's brilliant.
- 15:06I love his area. He's one of those doctors that
- 15:08just lifts even a weaker story or a script that you're not that
- 15:11keen on. Just his presence in the way
- 15:13that sort of Tom Baker, just his presence in a story just makes
- 15:17it so watchable. And he's brilliant throughout.
- 15:19And I think my favorite of his series is Whichever Can I just
- 15:23most recently. Yeah, Can I just come in there
- 15:27on that point? I think 100% agree.
- 15:30You know, we've went from, you know, Tennant in Smith, young
- 15:34dashing, you know, puppy dog doctors to someone who's a lot,
- 15:37you know, older and got me and that is John.
- 15:38But I think for me it's it is just that filter.
- 15:42You know, it's it's like, you know, the 11th Doctor and the
- 15:4512th Doctor, exactly the same characters.
- 15:46They're written by the same manner, exactly the same way.
- 15:48It's just the the 12th Doctor doesn't have that filter that
- 15:52stops and saying things that are potentially uncounted.
- 15:56The 11th Doctor is every bit as much as a prick as the capacity
- 16:00Doctor. He just smiles and is cuter
- 16:02about it, which I think is a bit more insidious actually.
- 16:05At least 12 is upfront about how much.
- 16:07This is, this is it. He's, you know, the the 11th
- 16:10Doctor hides it very well, and the 9th Doctor, I think probably
- 16:13hides it a bit better as well. But where's the 12th?
- 16:16There is nothing hidden. He is as straight and honest as
- 16:20as he can be to your face. Yeah, if I can add to that,
- 16:23because the 11th Doctor still had an understanding of, you
- 16:27know, social mores and how humans behave.
- 16:29So, so, so he knows when he, you know, when he's being rude, but
- 16:33with a smiling face, he knows what he's doing.
- 16:35The 12th Doctor is completely he's he's been reset.
- 16:38He no longer, you know, all his understanding of how society
- 16:43works among humans has been stripped away.
- 16:45So he just says it like he, you know, he wouldn't.
- 16:48He doesn't know when he's being rude.
- 16:49He's just, like you said, he's just raw And and then he's very
- 16:53surprised when somebody's offended because.
- 16:55Those cards, Oh my God, I'm so sorry for the loss of your pet
- 17:02relative. Whatever it is, it's just like
- 17:04go get the car, start quick. So funny.
- 17:09I mean, like, I don't think there's a a moment in a that's
- 17:12more jarring than that moment in the beast below where the star
- 17:15is like, oh, go fly through space, Amy Pond.
- 17:17And then by the end of that episode, he's screaming in her
- 17:20face like no one's got any right to tell me what's happening.
- 17:24There's no point in a where Capaldi is that horrible to to
- 17:28pull Jenna Coleman's Clara Mark. Did you have anything else to
- 17:32add there about the Era I? Was going to say was my favorite
- 17:35season is usually whichever one I've watched most recently.
- 17:39A gun was up in my head. I would say 8.
- 17:43I'm in complete agreement with you.
- 17:44I suppose it's my turn next. I I think 8 is my favorite
- 17:48Steven Moffitt season of all. And I love, I love how much of A
- 17:53prick he is that year. I love Colin being a bastard and
- 17:56I love John Pertwee being a bastard as well because I think
- 18:00the payoff is extraordinary. You start with and by a good man
- 18:04and you end with. Do you honestly think, you know?
- 18:07You could betray me and I still wouldn't.
- 18:10I still wouldn't be here for you and help you out there in dark
- 18:13water, which is just one of the best.
- 18:14Thing I care so little for you that between me would.
- 18:17Make it's beautiful, beautiful and her reaction to that.
- 18:20I just get chills watching that, whereas I I find the the midlife
- 18:25crisis 9 a little bit, you know, on some of tanks with guitars
- 18:29and. I I love the tank that the only
- 18:32when you love it. Yeah, I mean, I'm scared it's
- 18:34gonna be me in about 5 years. That's probably why I'll I'll be
- 18:37doing that in five years. So when I hit 50 and then in 10.
- 18:40I love the professorial thing and I love the relationship with
- 18:44Bill. I think they go in 10 with like
- 18:48this. We're going to make him as
- 18:49likeable as possible because something's gone wrong and he
- 18:52hasn't caught the audience that we wanted him to.
- 18:54So he has like a run of stories. I don't think that's.
- 18:57What happens? I don't think that's what
- 18:58happens. I think there's there's a
- 19:00deliberate shift in the pilot to make him a more likeable
- 19:04character because in the previous couple of episodes he's
- 19:07literally going the whole universe can end and I don't
- 19:10care. And that's not a very likeable
- 19:12stance. Whereas in the pilot, he's just
- 19:13immediately being helpful and lovely to everybody.
- 19:17Yeah, I'm going to correct you on that because the previous two
- 19:20episodes of the two Christmas specials, which is I was.
- 19:22Talking about helping. Doctor Mysterio and and those
- 19:26ones. Are Well, I'm sorry Fraser, I'll
- 19:27try very hard to forget about Doctor Mysterio somewhere in the
- 19:32back of my hypothalamus. That's because you're a loser
- 19:36and it is just getting, it's the different dynamic between him
- 19:42and Bill and and him and Clara. How?
- 19:44Refreshing. It is, but at the same time, I
- 19:47think you know what goes on between the cross Dr. and Clara.
- 19:50It's interesting. You know, you might not like it.
- 19:53You might think, you know, this is yeah, you might think this is
- 19:56this is toxic. This is you know what, not what
- 19:59I want to see the Doctor down the companion doing.
- 20:01But you know, it's interesting. It's different.
- 20:03It's you can see Moffett coming up this and thinking, you know
- 20:07what? We've got to see this formula
- 20:09we're doing with everybody. Let's do something a bit
- 20:12different. Let's shake it up a little bit.
- 20:14Let's let's, you know, make it interesting.
- 20:17And he doesn't always get that right.
- 20:19You know, often he throws a lot of stuff at the screen to make
- 20:21it interesting. Like, you know, like Daleks
- 20:23can't say the word pity or whatever.
- 20:25I mean, crap like that. But sometimes it really does
- 20:30work. You know, if nothing else, you
- 20:33are engaged and interested much and then you come away and
- 20:36you'll slag it off, but you slag it off because you're engaged,
- 20:39because it's resonated. Hit something with you.
- 20:41I think it's hampered though, because Coleman wimped out of
- 20:44leaving the show in last Christmas and so she's barely
- 20:47got anything to do in nine. You know she's written out of
- 20:51well. She's tagged with Missy in the
- 20:521st 2:00. Which is lens?
- 20:54Which is she's written out of two episodes completely.
- 20:56She's forced to play a villain in one episode because.
- 20:59Which is brilliant. Saigon too far to, yeah, but the
- 21:01character of Clara isn't given anything to do, and that's a
- 21:04problem. That's a problem.
- 21:06Like, Oh my God, that's a big statement.
- 21:09And not until, Obviously not until face the Ravens, when we
- 21:14finally get rid of her. Oh, no, wait, we don't because
- 21:16we don't do that anymore anyway. Sorry, I don't.
- 21:18And then in 10 and then in 10, yeah, I do.
- 21:22I do think there's a new mission.
- 21:23Well, that's how I see it anyway.
- 21:25And then in the second-half of the season, I think that's
- 21:26muddied because you get scenes like him trying to get Bill to
- 21:30shoot him and things like this. And it's, there's some really
- 21:33awkward, ugly moments in that second-half of that season where
- 21:36I'm just not sure who he is. It's like the mind warp of Trial
- 21:40of a Time Lord. You know, they've they've
- 21:41corrected the character and then he's behaving in an unpleasant
- 21:44way again. It's all a bit strange, but the
- 21:48I love the darkness of the era. I like how psychologically
- 21:52probing the era is. And I just think he's an
- 21:55extraordinary actor, probably the best actor to have ever
- 21:59played the Doctor. Despite what I think of the
- 22:01material, Capaldi is strong enough to rise above or meet the
- 22:07material, wherever it's at. Quality rise.
- 22:10Yeah, he's amazingly good. Oh, now everyone's nodding their
- 22:14heads at me. Now I'm saying nicely.
- 22:16Capaldi is the best. He's he's extraordinary.
- 22:19Like I said, he's transcendent as an actor.
- 22:21You can't take your eyes off him.
- 22:23Like it don't matter who else is in the scene.
- 22:25I just can't take him while I was off Capaldi.
- 22:28What if he's not a leading man that often, is he?
- 22:30When you think like he's in The Three Musketeers, he was, you
- 22:34know, he was a villain, so he wasn't in it that much.
- 22:36He's in ensembles like in The Thick of It and In The Loop and
- 22:39that type of thing. But he's he's totally leading
- 22:42man material. He can completely carry a series
- 22:44like Doctor Who. It's a shame you don't get to
- 22:46see that more, I think. He's he's prepared to step back
- 22:50as well, I think, and give other people their moment in a scene.
- 22:53He doesn't have to dominate a scene like some of the doctors
- 22:55you get in the new series. Did you want to say Dominic?
- 22:58Still. Oh, Fraser, you're still always
- 23:01looking at him. Well look, let's go into round
- 23:06one then and have a look at the runners up.
- 23:12This is a chance for the runners up to have an.
- 23:14Before we do that, before we do that, can I ask everyone a
- 23:17question please, Because I mean, obviously this is this is
- 23:22strictly come hamster. This is where good sense and
- 23:24good taste and goes to die. And the options we've been left
- 23:28with are spurious at best, batshit at worst.
- 23:33You know, I can guarantee that everyone has got one story at
- 23:37least that they are gutted is not in this mix.
- 23:40So I want to know what is the one story from the 12th Doctor
- 23:43that everyone if you had a pass you would put in this list?
- 23:48Who are you asking? Well, I'll go first while
- 23:50everyone thinks, because obviously this is what I've just
- 23:53dropped on. Is it drop of a hat?
- 23:55So for me it is the husbands of River song that was mentioned
- 23:58because, you know, I just think that is such a beautiful story.
- 24:04It's, you know, we come off to 9 and it's been really heavy.
- 24:07It's been really dark and it's been really deepened.
- 24:10You know, we have we'll have a Christmas special, which is just
- 24:13a nice bit of fun. River Song I've never been a fan
- 24:16of until this episode, to be honest.
- 24:19By the time we got to the end of this, by the time we got to.
- 24:22And that that scene where she is extelling the virtues of the
- 24:26Doctor and not knowing that you stood right next to her.
- 24:29And then he turns, she turns and looks him in the eye and he just
- 24:32smiles back. Hello, sweetie.
- 24:35And every single emotion possible breaks on the Cliff of
- 24:40Alex Kingston's face in response to that.
- 24:43It's just such a beautiful moment and I think.
- 24:45Ending Fraser where they're staring into each other's eyes
- 24:48and I dread to think what came after.
- 24:50We cut away from that scene at the.
- 24:52End 24 years of Deridium. Boy it is sexy as hell.
- 24:55It is and it's, it's, it's the perfect sort of end for River
- 24:59Song. It's, it's just a, a brilliant
- 25:02performance by Capaldi. You know that scene where he
- 25:04goes into the TARDIS for the first time?
- 25:06So this is my turn. Now I get to.
- 25:08Do this. You know, it's, it's, it's a
- 25:12real highlight, you know, I mean, I watch every all the
- 25:14Christmas specials every year, you know, I'm counting down till
- 25:17it's officially far enough in November 1st to start watching.
- 25:20And it'll be one of the first ones I watch because I really
- 25:22adore. So that would be my choice.
- 25:25Oh my. God, my understanding of noise,
- 25:30of physics has been completely transformed.
- 25:33Forever. So great, No, Even better during
- 25:37the bit of the star when he opens the door to the Carol
- 25:39singers and goes bugger off. I got Amazon.
- 25:46And when River says he never noticed before the look he gives
- 25:49her. Or maybe he'll notice this.
- 25:51Time. Does everyone find they're
- 25:54becoming Peter Capaldi's doctor the older they get?
- 25:56I mean, I am. Well, let's go round to let's
- 26:02ask Mark next. What episode is not on this
- 26:04extremely sophisticated list of episodes that you would choose?
- 26:08Probably an obvious one, but Mummy on the Orient Express is,
- 26:12is an absolute favorite. It's just, it's it's fun and
- 26:16it's funny, but it's creepy as well.
- 26:18I think the mummy design is, is excellent and it's just, yeah,
- 26:23it's just a great story. The really satisfying
- 26:25conclusion, I think. Yeah, good, good guest cast and
- 26:29everything. It's yeah.
- 26:31It's one that I often bring up to watch just as a, as a good
- 26:35example of the of the era. So yeah, it's a it's a surprise
- 26:39I suppose, that that wasn't made it through because it seems to
- 26:41be one that people who don't like the era would cite as one
- 26:45that they do enjoy. I was feeling contrary that
- 26:48night. I'll kick that one out.
- 26:50Although you sure it's got nothing to do with Jenna Coleman
- 26:52in that cocktail dress? Well.
- 26:57You don't have to answer that mark.
- 27:01Soap Pyjamas yeah, I would have gone with with mummy, but but as
- 27:08Mark's beaten me to it, I will nominate Time Heist.
- 27:12I think I it's it's it's a favorite of mine and it's also a
- 27:19favorite of of my sons as well. So it's some it's one that we
- 27:23tend to watch quite a lot together.
- 27:26And that was his first question when when he when he came in and
- 27:30saw that I was watching kill the moon and asked why I was doing
- 27:34that. And I said, well, this is the
- 27:35list I've been given. He goes, why is time heights not
- 27:38on there? So so so time.
- 27:40Heights your mouth of babes. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:43Good lad. Yeah.
- 27:44Now, Joanna, you're going to say time heights, obviously.
- 27:46Well, you're treating 3/3 of my choices, so I think I will say
- 27:53deep breath it. It's a great opener.
- 27:58If you're new to Doctor Who, the first thing you see is a a
- 28:01dinosaur spitting out blue box in Victoria and London.
- 28:05You're like, I want to know what's going on here, you know,
- 28:09and it's just the way he immediately he inhabits the part
- 28:13fully. And he is, he is, he is, he is
- 28:16weirded out and he's weird, but he's also funny.
- 28:19He's, I don't know, there's yeah, I, I, I was not prepared
- 28:26to talk about this episode, not on the list, but I think there's
- 28:30so much to it. I love the the Paternoster gang.
- 28:35I love how funny Strax is and with with Clara as well, and how
- 28:41he he brings her down a notch without without meaning to, but
- 28:45it's funny. It's not, you know, without.
- 28:47Meaning to he throws that paper right in her face.
- 28:51Oh God. That's her first and she's.
- 28:52So funny, isn't it? Is that the funniest visual joke
- 28:57in all of Doctor? It's kind of.
- 29:00It's, it's, it's comedy and then it's dark and then it's kind of
- 29:04body horror, but not in a disturbing way.
- 29:07And it's just bonkers. And then you get this wonderful
- 29:11scene where all this time the doctor has been confused and
- 29:15doesn't know who he is. We don't know who he is yet.
- 29:17He's just acting very strange. And then you have this
- 29:19confrontation with this half robot, half person where he gets
- 29:24really intense and you start seeing, OK, I think I can start
- 29:29seeing it. Like he has this dark and we
- 29:31don't know. We're not told.
- 29:32Who cares who you know whether? What do you think?
- 29:36I think doctor puts him but but you know, and the, the moment
- 29:42where he kind of looks down and then he suddenly he looks up
- 29:46into the camera always gets me because the, the, that look is
- 29:50just extraordinary. And it's gorgeous.
- 29:53It's gorgeous. You know, Victorian episodes,
- 29:55they're always gorgeous. So it, they're so it's, it's,
- 29:58it's fantastic. There's some, I mean, we could
- 29:59do a whole episode on that. I don't want to go on and on,
- 30:01but yeah, since you have taken my three first choices, I was
- 30:05saying to Beth, yeah, although there are so many episodes I, I
- 30:09really love about this. Hold on.
- 30:11No one took my choice. I'm pleased to say mine's a
- 30:14massive grower because I didn't really think that much of it on
- 30:17transmission and the more I watch it the more I love it.
- 30:21Mine's Into the Dalek, which I just think is the one of the
- 30:24most stylish episodes. The bits where the Daleks burst
- 30:28through that door and that model, Oh my God, it just looks
- 30:31absolutely sunny. But it's a great examination of
- 30:33the 12th Doctor as well and comparing him to the Dalek.
- 30:37All of that stuff's really interesting.
- 30:39Clara gets loads to do. There's lots of quirky, weird
- 30:42stuff going on. All the antibodies inside the I
- 30:45just think it's a great adventure, that one.
- 30:46It's the nice right tone of sort of RIP roaring action
- 30:53psychological examination and and just a great showcase for
- 30:58Capaldi and Coleman as well. Yeah, I think it's I think it's
- 31:00wonderful, but they're not on the list.
- 31:03So what the list we're stuck with today is Robot of Sherwood,
- 31:10Flatline, Hellbent, The Pilot and Wild Enough in Time and the
- 31:16Doctor Falls. Yes, that's right, it was the
- 31:19runner up. So let's do a round Robin then
- 31:23and see what what people are choosing.
- 31:27And because he's fidgeting uncomfortably in his chair.
- 31:30Dan, why don't you go first? Yeah, I I suppose reason and
- 31:36logic dictates that I should pick something like Flatline or
- 31:41A Wild Enough of Time and The Doctor Falls, but I'm not going
- 31:44to. I'm going to nominate Robot
- 31:50Sherwood. I knew.
- 31:53Somebody was going to do this. And the reason is it's just,
- 31:57it's just so much fun. It's just, it's just such a, you
- 32:01know, like a fun adventure. It's, it's, it's camp.
- 32:05It's, it's just brilliant, you know, And I, and I think it's
- 32:10kind of the story that if, if you are going to have a Doctor
- 32:12Who that starts off where he is a little bit sort of edgy, a
- 32:17little bit sharp, you know, you need stories like this with that
- 32:21blend of like sort of like comic humour, that sort of, and then
- 32:26the swashbuckling kind of adventure and robot insured it
- 32:32has it in spades. It's, it's, you know, and I
- 32:36think, I think the highlight of it is that that rivalry between
- 32:42Robin Hood and the, the 12th Doctor and, and it, you know, it
- 32:47starts off and they're very quite confrontational and kind
- 32:50of trying to outdo one another. But, but as the story goes,
- 32:56there's this sort of mutual respect that just kind of grows
- 33:01between the, the, the 2 characters, you know, and like,
- 33:04you know, at the, at the start of the story, you've got like,
- 33:08you know, Robin Hood, he's just laughing at everything and, and
- 33:12all this sort of stuff. And, and, you know, the doctor
- 33:16goes, you know, do people ever punch you in the face?
- 33:19That's. Brilliant.
- 33:22You know, there's this legendary character and the Doctor goes,
- 33:28well, they would like to punch you in the face every time you.
- 33:31Laugh Exactly the sort of things you want to say to people.
- 33:33Yeah. Oh, exactly.
- 33:34We've says it, don't it? We we've all been in groups of
- 33:37people where there's someone like that, they don't shut up.
- 33:41I'm just going to, you know. Who you talking about from this
- 33:44weekend just gone down? I'm not going to say on camera.
- 33:53I've got a bruise on my cheek though.
- 33:58And yet, you know, towards the end of the story, you know,
- 34:01that's the as the Doctor goes into the TARDIS, you've got like
- 34:04Clara going to admit it, you like him and he goes, well, I'm
- 34:08leaving him a present on ice. So and it's just lovely that
- 34:12sort of that scene where he gets, you know, Robin gets
- 34:14reunited with with with Marion. So it kind of really, really
- 34:19touches, you know, really tugs on your heartstrings.
- 34:21That does, doesn't it? You've you've also got the sword
- 34:26fight with the spoon. I mean, only in Doctor Who could
- 34:29you have a character fight someone with a with a spoon and
- 34:35you know, and I just I just love the way that the you know, this.
- 34:40And again, I think this kind of backed up what Mark was saying
- 34:43that that he isn't this doctor isn't as unlikable as people
- 34:46actually kind of make him out to be.
- 34:48Because when he goes, I don't have a sword, I have a spoon.
- 34:53And he goes, you know, on guard. And he's right into the action
- 34:56sort of thing that that that is not someone that's horrible.
- 34:59That is, that is, that's someone that that's fun, that's you know
- 35:03well. He wields that spoon like Errol
- 35:05Flynn doesn't. He with the glove.
- 35:10I love the the archery tournament because it, it
- 35:15becomes like, who's got the biggest Willy con between,
- 35:19between the between Robin and the doctors that they're trying
- 35:23to outdo each other with more and more sort of elaborate
- 35:27trickery. And then later on we find out
- 35:29that the doctors actually cheated and used technology to
- 35:32be able to show him up. You know what else?
- 35:39Yeah, I, I, I really like Ben Miller as the.
- 35:44As the the. The Sheriff of Nottingham as
- 35:46well. I think he's that kind of, he's
- 35:49one of those villains that almost feels a bit panto, but
- 35:52kind of like twirling of the the mustache, a little bit of over
- 35:56the top kind of thing. And I and I, and I think what,
- 36:00what's really good is that I feel it's quite fitting that
- 36:04Robin defeats him with the move that the Doctor used to defeat
- 36:07him when they were sword fighting at the beginning.
- 36:10And I and I think that kind of then it does underline that sort
- 36:13of admiration that's growing between those, those two, two
- 36:17people. It's Chekhov's butt thruster.
- 36:20Yes, but, but I think it's not just that banter because because
- 36:26that feels quite quite thin. Quite, you know, shallow.
- 36:32There is quite a lot of depth to this story as well because
- 36:36you've got that running theme through series 9 where the
- 36:39doctors kind of asking am IA good man.
- 36:43He, he's striving to kind of find his identity after his
- 36:46previous regeneration. And, and I think through Robin,
- 36:51the story kind of holds a mirror up to the doctor and it kind of
- 36:56highlights his, his, his character as being good, as
- 37:01being a hero, as, as being someone that fights, you know,
- 37:05for the weak. And, and, and, and I think, you
- 37:09know, that's kind of highlighted towards the end of the the the
- 37:12thing where the, the episode where the doctor and Robin are
- 37:16kind of saying their goodbyes. And, and you know, there's,
- 37:21there's a similarity in that journey where both were Gentry
- 37:25who ran away from their responsible or foot stood up for
- 37:29their responsibilities, I suppose, and then began that
- 37:34sort of like championing the the the those that were weaker than
- 37:38them fighting for those people. And, and I and I think it's
- 37:41it's, you know, that I I think that's really, really good.
- 37:45How that's kind of how Mark Gaters has kind of weaved that
- 37:48into it and kind of answers that am IA good man.
- 37:51Only three episodes into that arc.
- 37:55Yeah, yeah. And then and I think I, I think
- 38:00like the I'm going to leave it with this because I don't want
- 38:02to take up too much time, but I love that line at the end when
- 38:05the Doctor and and Robin are talking with one another.
- 38:08And and Rob Robin kind of goes, is it, is it true that I've been
- 38:13forgotten as a real man and I'm only remembered as a as a
- 38:16legend? And the doctor goes, well, I'm
- 38:17afraid it's so. And then Robin comes back.
- 38:20He goes, good history is a burden.
- 38:23Stories can make us fly. And I, and I think this is a
- 38:26story that really does fly. That's why I'm putting it
- 38:29forward. Oh.
- 38:31Yeah, fantastic. I'm.
- 38:32Half convinced, you know Jomana, what are you choosing from this
- 38:40list of oddities? I'm going to champion the pilot.
- 38:46I mean, I was torn between two or three, but I I'm going to go
- 38:49for the pilot because I think it's such a beautifully crafted
- 38:52opener. You know, there are there are a
- 38:55lot of continuity references it but in it, but like on the
- 38:59doctor's desk and and things like that.
- 39:01But if you're a new viewer, they don't get in the way at all.
- 39:03You actually don't need to know a thing about the doctor or the
- 39:06show before you start because you discover it through the eyes
- 39:10of the companion, which is the best way.
- 39:12And I actually envy anybody who watches this episode without
- 39:15prior, prior knowledge because it is really kind of you go from
- 39:20wonder to wonder and you get to discover the TARDIS in that
- 39:25amazing way. So, so, so you start and it's
- 39:29just this maybe eccentric professor.
- 39:32And I love Bill the moment she walks in and she gives Nardo
- 39:39that look when he squeaks. He's such a perfect look.
- 39:44And, and I love how the Doctor kind of explains that he she
- 39:52kind of picked her out. You noticed her in the class
- 39:54because when she doesn't understand something, she
- 39:57smiles. And it's such a lovely thing.
- 40:00And it's also, I mean, putting, putting myself in the, in the,
- 40:03in the shoes of a young, a young viewer, it kind of gives the
- 40:06message that all you need for the doctor to notice you is to
- 40:09love to learn new things. And, you know, you don't need to
- 40:13be special in any other way. And it's just, it's, it's, it's
- 40:20a, you know. A soft reboot, if you like.
- 40:23So it's not a complicated script, but it just there are so
- 40:26many delightful moments like when when he goes to take back
- 40:30photos to take photos of her mom for Christmas and she opens
- 40:35them, she's crying. And I was, I watched this again
- 40:37yesterday because I thought I might champion that I was crying
- 40:40right along with her. And he doesn't even want credit
- 40:43for that, right? He, he, he doesn't even have the
- 40:46intention of letting her know he did this for her.
- 40:48He just wants her to have this beautiful present.
- 40:51And I think that's just gorgeous.
- 40:52That's just such, so thoughtful. You know, he's come a long way,
- 40:57right, in understanding what makes humans stick.
- 41:03And and then I love when so he's been there.
- 41:08Clearly he's resignated to the fact he's probably never going
- 41:11to travel again because he has to.
- 41:13We learn much later. He has to watch over that vault
- 41:15for 10,000 years. So I don't know how, how long,
- 41:18but when there's this mystery of this puzzle, he can, he runs, he
- 41:23can't run fast enough. And I love, I think this is one
- 41:27of the most hilarious parts for me when Bill asked him do you
- 41:31know any sci-fi and the look he gives.
- 41:34You the look. The look I was giving the TV in
- 41:36that moment, I was like, dude, he is sci-fi, what are we
- 41:40talking about? You know, you said about the
- 41:43running. Do you remember how Bill
- 41:45describes it? Yes, like a Penguin Is Azar's on
- 41:48fire? I mean, it's right.
- 41:51She's right. Isn't she good?
- 41:56And then the way they have to get into the TARDIS in a hurry
- 42:00and, and it's very nice thought that now the TARDIS is parked
- 42:03over that rug, which which she gave like this little detail of,
- 42:07huh, how did that happen? And then when they have to go in
- 42:10there and he leaves her and he goes and switches the lights on
- 42:15and he's, you know, changes into his Doctor's velvet.
- 42:19And he looks so excited. He's like, Oh my God.
- 42:23And then the theme, his theme song a a good man starts again.
- 42:27And at this point, you know, my heart is just lifted because I
- 42:31love this theme song and we hadn't heard it for a while at
- 42:34that point. And just hearing it just kind of
- 42:37sends me it. I just, it really lifts me.
- 42:40I I think it's absolutely beautiful.
- 42:44And then you have this chase, which is basically takes build
- 42:47from wonder to wonder or, or from terror to terror, depending
- 42:50on the way you look at it. We get introduced to the
- 42:52dialects in this really brief but very kind of, I guess,
- 42:57economical scene. The Movellens make an
- 42:59appearance. You know, I'll watch this.
- 43:01I had, I basically, I had never watched any Doctor Who earlier
- 43:06than Capaldi the first time I watched the pilot.
- 43:08And you know, none of this phased me.
- 43:10I, it was all amazing because I was really in that phase.
- 43:13But when I came back to it after watching everything, oh man,
- 43:17that's when I got really excited because like, Oh my, he gave
- 43:20Naruto the 4th Doctor's screwdriver and the, Oh my God,
- 43:24it's the Movellens again. And Jesus, they do look good,
- 43:26very stylish. Why did they not come back?
- 43:29You know, all that stuff. It's just, it's just a series of
- 43:34delightful scenes that are not too taxing, but still lovely.
- 43:38And the relationship between them two in the from the start
- 43:41is just, I think, very lovely. And just there's also this point
- 43:48at the end when he's he's decided not to erase Bill's
- 43:52memory and she goes out and he, you know, he kind of looks at
- 43:58River. He says shut up.
- 43:59He looks at Susan, says you shut up too.
- 44:02And and it's lovely because he's talking to the photos and, you
- 44:05know, he's done this before. You know, he talks to them
- 44:08because he misses them. And it's just so you know.
- 44:11I'll do it. Don't you do it.
- 44:12I'll do it if I go. Stop looking at me, all right?
- 44:17And then we're we're off, you know, he's like, what the hell,
- 44:20Let's just go, let's just go have an adventure.
- 44:22And it's so exciting and it's so lovely and it's so nice after
- 44:27all the really difficult stuff he's gone through.
- 44:33You know, it's been very dark, it's been very painful.
- 44:36And that's the reason why he's so warm and fluffy now and
- 44:38frankly a bit tired. He looks quite worn out at this
- 44:41point. And but I think why I said, you
- 44:45know, these three, the three runs were all 1 arc is because
- 44:48in order to get to this point where he is so sweet and fluffy,
- 44:52he had to suffer and he had to love and to lose.
- 44:55And that's where that's what, you know, smoothened out all the
- 44:58edges. So he's earned this really nice,
- 45:02lovely relationship with a with a student where he can be
- 45:05grandfatherly and he's not so alien anymore.
- 45:08So, yeah. So I think it's just a lovely
- 45:10episode, very beautifully crafted and very rewarding.
- 45:14I don't know if you listened to the episode where we covered
- 45:16that, but we all extolled the virtues.
- 45:19It was a rare, unanimous. Everybody loves this one.
- 45:22When the pilot was being talked about.
- 45:24Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, I'm glad we all enjoyed it.
- 45:27I haven't, I haven't listened to any of the strictly for the 12
- 45:30blocker because I didn't want to have my heart broken.
- 45:34You should listen to the series 8 ones, you know, very nice
- 45:36about those. I think Mark McManus is on one
- 45:39of those. He's very good, you know.
- 45:41I think on two of them actually. He was, yeah, talking of Mark
- 45:45McManus. Mark, what story are you
- 45:48choosing? Yeah, I'm going to say flatline,
- 45:51which I think extraordinary that that's a rudder rope, yeah.
- 45:57Great. It's, I think it's absolutely
- 45:59brilliant. I think the inventiveness of it,
- 46:02the the 2D aliens and the way that that gets represented on
- 46:05screen is brilliant. It's the, you know, they've,
- 46:09they've now learned. I think it's obviously Matt
- 46:11Smith here how to do a Doctor Light episode is you just film
- 46:14the Doctor on the TARDIS set. So it doesn't feel like a a
- 46:16Doctor light episode anymore. And they can be in it just as
- 46:19much. And there the humour, the, the,
- 46:24the, you know, the when he first climbs out of the sort of half
- 46:27size TARDIS and, and you know how you say Peter Capaldi
- 46:30running, I think in the thick of it, Amanda Nucci said, you know,
- 46:33if we wanted to get like a cheap laugh would just get pizza
- 46:36Capaldi to sort of run down a corridor, run somewhere.
- 46:39It is funny, but he's generally, there's a lot of physical humor
- 46:42like that, like him just climbing in and out of the half
- 46:44size TARDIS is really funny. And then when it's, you know,
- 46:48it's the size of one of our character options Tardises,
- 46:53which is just brilliant because when Clive was carrying it
- 46:57around, it looks like it looks like a character options sort of
- 47:00TARDIS, doesn't it? And I remember there was a spate
- 47:02of kind of really inventive stuff on Twitter at the time of
- 47:04people kind of doing the the thing with the hand coming out.
- 47:08Mark Papi, isn't that just genius?
- 47:11Absolutely brilliant. How am I going to get off this
- 47:13track? I don't think it's, it's such a
- 47:20crucial one in terms of the Doctor and Clara's relationship
- 47:23because throughout the series they've they've not kind of seen
- 47:26eye to eye. They've not been able to see
- 47:27others point of view, each other's point of view.
- 47:30And then they're forced to hear. So literally the Doctor can only
- 47:34see what Clara sees because she puts the earpiece in which
- 47:38hijacks her optic nerve or whatever, so that on the TARDIS
- 47:41scanner, he can only see things through her eyes and she has to
- 47:45kind of walk in his shoes and see what it's like as the
- 47:47Doctor. So it's, it's a really, really
- 47:51interesting thing from the point of view of, of their
- 47:53relationship, because Amy was saying about the 12th Doctor,
- 47:56he's, he's not as aware, you know, kind of how to act
- 48:00socially and that kind of thing. And he, you can barely tell one
- 48:03human apart from another and that kind of thing.
- 48:05But when he's forced to sit through Clara's eyes, he's
- 48:07really observant and, and he starts to spot the clues and
- 48:10that kind of thing. And he, he seems to understand a
- 48:12bit more. And then Clara starts to
- 48:14realise, you know, what it takes to be the Doctor.
- 48:18And there's some really interesting stuff there, what
- 48:20she's figuring out. And the Doctor's given her
- 48:22advice about when they're running, when she's with the,
- 48:26the group of people who are doing the, I was going to say
- 48:29work experience there. What do you call it?
- 48:32Community service? Yeah, that's it.
- 48:34Yeah. And the doctors is a crucial
- 48:37point. You know, they need a leader
- 48:38right now. Make sure it's you.
- 48:40And you can kind of see how how the doctor operates and Clive
- 48:43sort of steps into that, that space.
- 48:46And even like the way that Clive was evolved in this series, I
- 48:49think in the the moment you're expressed, she was really
- 48:52uncomfortable lying to Maisie was now she's kind of got much
- 48:57more comfortable with that. And there's a series goes on
- 48:59that becomes a big part of her arc and everything.
- 49:02So she's now lying to Danny sort of, you know, quite comfortably
- 49:06when they're doing the bit with the the egg chair thing swinging
- 49:09out. She said, no, no, it's fine.
- 49:11Yeah, I'm just. Just eyes a fucking chair like
- 49:13that but swings out the window like that.
- 49:16God. Sex.
- 49:19And there's that line about, you know, so you make an excellent
- 49:21doctor, but but goodness has nothing to do with it.
- 49:24So it's it's part of the, you know, am IA Goodman thing as
- 49:27well. And I think the way it feeds
- 49:29into that story is the Doctor kind of realizing that, you
- 49:33know, he's forced into that role.
- 49:34He's the man that fights the monsters.
- 49:36And it's just that ending is just just glorious.
- 49:38That kind of delayed gratification, I think of the
- 49:40doctor arriving and saying that saving the day.
- 49:42It works brilliant. Like in A Christmas Invasion or
- 49:45in Family of Blood where the Doctor is he's different or
- 49:49unavailable or post regenerative, whatever.
- 49:51And then when he say he comes full on as the Doctor.
- 49:54So when he bursts out the TARDIS and names them the boneless and
- 49:57all that, it's just it's it's one of my favorite towards
- 50:01Doctor moments. It's just kind of a punch the
- 50:03air moment of him just being purely pure Doctorly.
- 50:08I think because he's been sort of a bit fallible in this
- 50:12series. He's been he's been wrong about
- 50:15things. Obviously, you know, talk about
- 50:16Robert show. It's a it's a fun episode of the
- 50:18Doctor Who's completely wrong throughout that he thinks it's a
- 50:21fun fair or a trap or whatever, you know, that that that there
- 50:24must be androids or something. Arguably he's wrong in listen.
- 50:29So it's yeah, it's it's it feels like a real kind of coming
- 50:34together of of his character at that point.
- 50:36And as I say, so important in in their relationship.
- 50:40So yeah, I think it's it's key episode.
- 50:42It's just fantastically entertaining.
- 50:43It's got, it's got everything. Homeless are so creepy, aren't
- 50:48they? The special effects of them all
- 50:50sort of rippling and juddering, and they have like, proper
- 50:53zombies in Doctor Who. And you talk about physical
- 50:57comedy. That bit where it comes into the
- 50:59TARDIS and goes, it's like, yeah, he can do physical comedy.
- 51:07All right. Right, so I'm going to go next
- 51:10because I want to put you in a bit of a bind if that's all
- 51:12right, because I never thought I wouldn't choose Flatline from
- 51:16this list because Flatline single handedly basically got me
- 51:20back into Doctor Who after really struggling with 7 and the
- 51:24first half of eight on transmission.
- 51:27Flatline came along and just revolutionized.
- 51:29It was just so full of new ideas and it for me, it revolutionised
- 51:33Clara as well because I, I've just thought she was so good as,
- 51:37as the Doctor in that story. She was so great.
- 51:42But Fraser, you are responsible for me choosing.
- 51:48I can't believe I'm going to say this robot of Sherwood funny.
- 51:52Do you know I feel another love coming on?
- 51:56God, I cannot remain on this herself.
- 51:59Execute me. No, I didn't execute the old
- 52:01fool. Hang on, execute him.
- 52:04Sorry, execute him. Execute him.
- 52:06I'd like to see if his head keeps laughing when you chop it
- 52:08up. Robin Hood, always.
- 52:10Laughs in the face of death. Just.
- 52:11Rolling around the floor or laughing.
- 52:13I would pay good money to see that God, God, God, God.
- 52:27Do we review understand in any way at all that there isn't
- 52:33actually a God out there? Because I really didn't like
- 52:39that episode. And then we did a commentary
- 52:41together. I watched it beforehand.
- 52:43I loved watching it for the second time.
- 52:45And then I watched it with you and I saw it through your eyes.
- 52:49And God, there's just so much here to enjoy.
- 52:54I mean, you want to talk about comedy?
- 52:55The bit that makes me how the most is when the Doctor and
- 52:58Robin are going at each other and Clara just goes, will you 2
- 53:01both just shut up? How?
- 53:06But do you know what, right, You're going to think I'm crazy,
- 53:08but I really like that once a year there is a light, beautiful
- 53:15looking episode because it's a really dark era.
- 53:19This visually it's dark, emotionally, it's quite dark.
- 53:24And they just go for a jolly adventure that there's this.
- 53:28I, I adore the Jeremy Matheson one from series 2, the girl who
- 53:32died. That's really fun that episode
- 53:34as well. And in the last season, it's
- 53:37Empress of Mars for me, which is just the ultimate trad Doctor
- 53:40Who jolly adventure with Victorian soldiers on the moon.
- 53:44But like, there's a shot, it sort of sums it up.
- 53:47There's a shot in Episode 1 where the camera sort of swoops
- 53:50down through the forest, across the river to the Doctor and
- 53:55Robin with their weapons ready to go.
- 53:58And it's just stunningly beautiful.
- 54:01It's a great time. I had a great time realising it
- 54:05was a great time because of you. And so yeah, I, I want it that
- 54:10to be in the winners. I want it to be there.
- 54:13So, Fraser, you either have to choose Robot of Sherwood and
- 54:18have this as a majority vote, or you choose something else and
- 54:23Robot sure was going for her anyway because it's a majority
- 54:26vote. Or you choose Flatline or the
- 54:30pilot and then it's head to head and the person who didn't choose
- 54:34one of those episodes will have to make the decision for us.
- 54:38What would you like to do, Fraser?
- 54:40Well, I did say going into this off mic, I said there was two
- 54:44runners up. I was really torn between it.
- 54:48Can't be flat line a robot or show it, is it?
- 54:50It's certainly not flat line, flat line.
- 54:54I I like, I like, but you know, I watched it back, you know,
- 54:58this week and I just thought, you know what there is
- 55:02everything that's been said about it is is wonderful.
- 55:04I think the really interesting thing this in Mummy and your
- 55:07Express, I think are really interested in what they are
- 55:10trying to do is not change the character of the Doctor to make
- 55:14him a little bit more likable for us.
- 55:16You know, they're trying to change the audience and Clara,
- 55:20and it's like trying to pivot the world around the Doctor to
- 55:23say, well, actually, we're not changing the Doctor.
- 55:25You need to change your view of the Doctor.
- 55:27You need to see what the Doctor is doing and why he's doing it
- 55:30and how Key operates and why, you know, you might be a bit
- 55:34more caustic. And that's really interesting.
- 55:36From that respect. I think, you know, the comedy
- 55:38there absolutely think that the two disc gag was, was was my
- 55:43favorite book. You know, it was just, it was a
- 55:45little bit too bleak for us, to be honest.
- 55:46It was a little bit too this. Yeah, it was just a little bit
- 55:50too bleak. It was kind of just like
- 55:51unpleasant people underground being unpleasant.
- 55:54And I think, you know, it really does get summed up at the end,
- 55:57you know, like you were excellent, but goodness had
- 55:59nothing to do with it. So I'm not going to go for flat
- 56:019. The two you know, the other one
- 56:04of the ones. We're not allowed to go for all
- 56:06of them. Well, you just bloody thing.
- 56:07One place. We want to go to bed tonight.
- 56:10Don't interrupting us. Then I was about to.
- 56:13The two that I was really struggling with is Robot of
- 56:16Sherwood and Wilderness and Tyne and the Doctor Force.
- 56:18Which I. Which I I genuinely adore for
- 56:21two completely different reasons.
- 56:23Obviously, Roberta Sherwood, you know, you guys have said a lot
- 56:25about it. I can't really add a great deal
- 56:27more than that other than just quote a few more lines.
- 56:30For example, when Clara comes out the TARDIS in that red dress
- 56:32and Robin Hood stands and goes, is there more of them in there?
- 56:36And. Doesn't she a beautiful embrace
- 56:39as well? You know, the the whole, you
- 56:44know, the, the, the scene in the the prison cell is just wondrous
- 56:47of start to finish. I just love, you know, the
- 56:49bickering and he soiled himself. I said he soiled himself and
- 56:55he's just the the way they're sorting.
- 56:57And then Clara just sitting there going.
- 56:59What's your plan then? Well, thank you for that.
- 57:00Last of the Time Lords, Prince of Thieves.
- 57:02It's over the. It's it's sparkles and like you
- 57:05say, it's, it's light. It's you know, it's it's there's
- 57:08this in this in the forest of the night where they've actually
- 57:11turned the lights up and put the split the sunshine and on the
- 57:14series, which I think is so refreshing.
- 57:15Get this gets gets it. He everyone else is writing
- 57:19Capaldi as Malcolm Tucker Kapal get this is writing them as
- 57:23Victor Meldrew. So he's getting that you can be
- 57:27grumpy and you can, you know, be miserable, but you can be funny
- 57:30with it. So that's why I really love
- 57:32robot Sherwood and that's why I'm happy that it's going to go
- 57:35through in the final because I am going to pick world enough in
- 57:37time. The Doctor falls just because I
- 57:39can at this point and still have I can have my cake and eat it.
- 57:43World enough in time, I think is just a superb bit of drama from
- 57:46start to finish. You know, it's just this, this
- 57:52high concept idea to start with of the spaceship, which is so
- 57:55long that it's so close to a black hole that the time is
- 57:58running slowly at one end and the other, which you know, the
- 58:00maths of it is never going to work.
- 58:01But the concept is sound and I really enjoy that.
- 58:04And you know what, this, this potholes left, right and centre
- 58:07when you, when you start to look at it, But you know, you, you
- 58:11start off with Missy coming out and just being so meta and
- 58:14Moffaty and everything. And then on a dime, it turns and
- 58:18goes to shit when Bill gets shot.
- 58:20You know, the Doctor, there's this danger.
- 58:24The Doctor comes out and does his big monologue speech, which
- 58:26is supposed to say that and it doesn't.
- 58:29And I mean, but when you, when you talk about this in the in
- 58:32the strictly episode, you're like, why, why we have got this
- 58:35hole in our chest and why we look pointing the camera through
- 58:37it. It's.
- 58:37I hate it. It's the Blake's.
- 58:39It's the Blake's seven thing. I'm watching Blake.
- 58:43Seven, I'm watching Doctor Who. Spoilers for anyone that's and
- 58:47not watch the end of Blake 7 Mark, you can listen to this now
- 58:49that I know that you have. But at the end of Blake 7, Blake
- 58:53gets shot and Gareth Thomas the the actor wanted to make it
- 58:58very, very clear he was not going to come back for series E.
- 59:02So he got the special effects guys to put double the amount of
- 59:06fake blood in the pack on his chest and it's an absolute gore
- 59:10explosion to make it clear that this is what's happening.
- 59:13Quite. Funny, actually, isn't it?
- 59:16Yeah. I don't think there's as much
- 59:17blood inside somebody that comes out of him in that episode.
- 59:21So, you know, this is what we're doing here.
- 59:23We are making 100% clear that Bill is not walking away from
- 59:26this. She is, you know, we, we're
- 59:28sitting there thinking, well, this is Moffat.
- 59:30Moffat never kills anyone. She's obviously going to get out
- 59:32of it. And he's making 100% clear.
- 59:35And the story just kind of evolves around there.
- 59:37You know, she gets brought back and then, you know, we'll have
- 59:40this, this whole idea of being in the bottom of the ship for
- 59:44the 2 decades while the Doctor is, you know, explaining enough
- 59:49of what's going on at the top to be able to come down.
- 59:52It's it's death by exposition really.
- 59:54Because the beautiful thing is, is that she was never going to
- 59:58walk away from that because the Master was sitting there waiting
- 1:00:00for the Doctor to come back. The Master says the Doctor, if
- 1:00:03you hadn't stopped and explained so much, if you already had two
- 1:00:05hours sooner, you would have saved her.
- 1:00:07But that was never going to be the case.
- 1:00:09The Master was always going to be two hours ahead of them.
- 1:00:11And it's just a beautiful. Evil twist from John Sims
- 1:00:15Master, I was totally fooled by this on transmission.
- 1:00:19I wish I'd been fooled about the Mondussen Cybermen.
- 1:00:22I wish I had known they were coming because that would have
- 1:00:24been a beautiful twist of just piercing that together.
- 1:00:28You know, those silhouettes in the hands and the voices without
- 1:00:32knowing. And I was totally fooled by John
- 1:00:36SIM in his in his make up and that was just a cleed forgot the
- 1:00:40master was supposed to be in and off it comes.
- 1:00:42And then you're going to Part 2 when you've got 2 the 2 masters.
- 1:00:45You've got Missy and John SIM squaring off against each other.
- 1:00:48And I think it does, you know, run out a little bit of steam in
- 1:00:52in in the doctor falls. But more than anything in one
- 1:00:55while see to pick this with this episode is because by the end
- 1:00:59you have got that perfect distillation of this 12th
- 1:01:04doctor. In fact, all the doctors, you
- 1:01:05know, where I fight and where I stand is, you know, where I
- 1:01:10fight is where I fall stand, and where I stand is where I fall.
- 1:01:12And was it without hope, without witness, without reward?
- 1:01:17You know, it's just such a perfect, perfect summation of of
- 1:01:22who that guy is. And that arc, that journey from
- 1:01:27the start, from deep breath, from shouting at pudding brains
- 1:01:29to this is me, this is who I am. I think it's just an outstanding
- 1:01:34bit of drama. And we'll go on and we'll talk
- 1:01:36about Peter Capaldi himself shortly.
- 1:01:37But you know, the fact that Capaldi pulled, you know, called
- 1:01:42the shots on that scene, you know, he was the one seeing no,
- 1:01:45actually, you 2 walk away from us.
- 1:01:47I don't turn around. I will run in front of you to
- 1:01:51stop you because you aren't going to stop for me.
- 1:01:53I have to go and physically stop you.
- 1:01:55The fact that, you know, with everything that's going on at
- 1:01:57the time behind the scenes with him, that he is still putting
- 1:02:01that much effort into that scene and it really shows.
- 1:02:05So wild enough in time the Doctor falls.
- 1:02:08It's it's not nearly as fun and, you know, entertaining as Robert
- 1:02:13Sherwood, which like you say, comes at exactly the right time
- 1:02:15when you need a bit of levity into this.
- 1:02:17But it is probably at the end of a series which always felt a
- 1:02:20little bit like Moffett was running out of steam.
- 1:02:23That is just the big rows yourself up off the mat, do the
- 1:02:27triple suplex, do the finishing move finale that Peter Capaldi
- 1:02:32and the 12th Doctor deserved. That would have been my second
- 1:02:36choice as well. I don't understand why you can't
- 1:02:38just exemplify those strengths rather than banging on about it
- 1:02:42for 5 minutes. We didn't used to do that in the
- 1:02:45classic series. He just was a good man and was
- 1:02:48heroic and did all of it. You didn't have to tell
- 1:02:50everybody all the time. We'll get there.
- 1:02:51We're going to talk about Capaldi.
- 1:02:52We'll get there. OK, well guys.
- 1:02:56Well, Robot of Sherwood was quite surprisingly kicks into
- 1:03:00our list of winners. This is strictly after all.
- 1:03:03Just to clarify if if that Joe hadn't thought I would have
- 1:03:06voted for Robot to show what to get through as well.
- 1:03:07So. I did wonder, I did wonder, I
- 1:03:10mean, Jesus, that this right sleeping them all is going to
- 1:03:12win this. But shall we go to our first
- 1:03:16round of listeners comments now? But remember, you can Heckle and
- 1:03:20cajole the ham fam if you wish, although there's a plenty of
- 1:03:24positivity here as well. So this first one is from
- 1:03:27Strangers in Space. It's the best era of Doctor Who.
- 1:03:31It tells a story about a character, his flaws, his
- 1:03:34strength, his alienness, his relationships, his ambitions,
- 1:03:37his weaknesses, and makes the other characters around him just
- 1:03:40as 3 dimensional. Other people might prefer the
- 1:03:43Doctor to be less interesting, just an archetype who wanders
- 1:03:46into other people's stories. But it's OK to make the lead
- 1:03:49character, the eponymous character after all, the subject
- 1:03:53of the series rather than its facilitator every now and again.
- 1:03:56It's done beautifully here. Bravo Jr., Southall.
- 1:04:02And the next comment is from the wonderful Mark Cockrum and it
- 1:04:07and he says I adore Peter Capaldi.
- 1:04:10He was a fantastic Doctor, possibly the finest actor to
- 1:04:13take on the role. He was also a great ambassador
- 1:04:16for the show during his tenure. Turning up at the Doctor
- 1:04:19experience on a day off in costume and visiting kids at a
- 1:04:23Hospice are just a couple of examples.
- 1:04:26A real class act. Imagine being like those kids in
- 1:04:29the Doctor Who experienced that day I made Jesus Christ.
- 1:04:32You'd explode, wouldn't you? Yeah, the next comment is from
- 1:04:37Daniel Knight. He says Peter Capaldi was born
- 1:04:39to play the part, but like Colin, his Doctor is written as
- 1:04:42unlikeable. It's not until Mummy that I felt
- 1:04:45I actually liked his character. Saddled with him, saddled with
- 1:04:48some high concept but dreadful stories, His ear is not one I
- 1:04:52like. And yet when I watch any of his
- 1:04:53episodes, I see him shine. Heaven sent his great drama, but
- 1:04:57I struggle to like it as an episode of Doctor Who.
- 1:05:00Husbands to Oxygen is his best run of episodes.
- 1:05:03His You'll be Safe Here speech in the pilot is wonderful.
- 1:05:08His hello sweetie moment is just smiles at River is adorable as
- 1:05:11he just smiles at River is adorable.
- 1:05:13I wish we'd had more of him and River.
- 1:05:16So not to like about him up until Mummy on Neuron Express.
- 1:05:19Don't you love that line? You know you want to have a chat
- 1:05:21with him. He's that top layer over there.
- 1:05:23Wonderful. That was when my wife stopped.
- 1:05:26Watching, I know, yeah, yeah. So not everybody is perhaps as
- 1:05:31keen on this. No, and I think.
- 1:05:32It's a big wit. It's really interesting because
- 1:05:34I think Mummy is just as harsh is is any any episode he's in.
- 1:05:40I think he's just as there's no real difference in that one.
- 1:05:44I am and I would say the best run he has is from the caretaker
- 1:05:48up into including in the Forest of the Night.
- 1:05:51What? I would say deep breath to twice
- 1:05:55upon a time. I am with.
- 1:05:57Mine I am. With mine, kill twice upon a
- 1:06:01time. Are you mad?
- 1:06:03Kill the moon until last Christmas.
- 1:06:06I think we're unfortunately in the forests of the night in
- 1:06:09there as well. All those kiddie winks.
- 1:06:13Someone please think of the children.
- 1:06:16Glenn Fitzgerald then absolutely loves Peter Capaldi.
- 1:06:19He is the Doctor of New Who for me.
- 1:06:22He brings back the aliens and mystery of the Doctor.
- 1:06:25He can be funny one second and deadly serious and dark the
- 1:06:27next. A key ingredient for the
- 1:06:29character. You can see Capaldi's passion
- 1:06:32for Doctor Who on and off the screen.
- 1:06:34Splendid. Oh, Arthur says I was never a
- 1:06:37fan of the Am IA Goodman stuff. It's so weird that someone with
- 1:06:41Moffett's fan credentials would think that copying the 6th
- 1:06:44Doctor's arc would be a good idea.
- 1:06:46Paul Arthur, the 6th Doctor had a fabulous arc, all right, so I
- 1:06:49could absolutely see why he did that.
- 1:06:51Add to that the dark and decided the grim tone of many of the
- 1:06:55stories, and you get a Doctor I don't want to revisit much.
- 1:06:59Well, you're missing a great actor there, Paul, I'm afraid.
- 1:07:01Revisit a Paul Arthur appears. Simon Threadgold says utterly
- 1:07:08brilliant. Each series saw him develop the
- 1:07:10character with a clear through line from Roe exposed nerve to
- 1:07:14healed and fully realised best version of himself.
- 1:07:18The most layered, thoughtful and compelling Dr. of all, and
- 1:07:21anyone who says otherwise is perfectly entitled to their
- 1:07:24opinion. Did you hear that, Poe Artha?
- 1:07:29All right. Simon's absolutely right, and
- 1:07:31he's brilliant on Twitter as well.
- 1:07:33He's really funny. Great guy.
- 1:07:37And we've got a comment from another great guy who I met at
- 1:07:39the weekend, David Gillespie Pratt.
- 1:07:42He says this is a tough one. Capaldi is one of the best
- 1:07:46actors to ever appear in the series.
- 1:07:49But Lombard with the Series 8 asshole.
- 1:07:52The Series 9 midlife crisis interpretations character
- 1:07:56development perhaps, but it. Drove a lot of people away.
- 1:08:03He didn't drive Jabana away, all right?
- 1:08:05It to be it did drive my family away.
- 1:08:08This is where they bailed out on me and it was just me watching.
- 1:08:10But yeah, yeah. But it drove a lot of people
- 1:08:13away. Had we had a season 10 Capaldi
- 1:08:17from the start, it might have been different.
- 1:08:19Words would have been boring. Yeah, he always just.
- 1:08:22Would have been like everybody else.
- 1:08:24Wouldn't it? Exactly.
- 1:08:25He's Lombard with nothing in in series name.
- 1:08:28The Doctor on a tank playing the guitar is hilarious.
- 1:08:31Oh. Boy, I mean, I think he should
- 1:08:34have started off, you know, as that acerbic kind of evil
- 1:08:37bastard and just got worse throughout the run.
- 1:08:39You know, by the end he's got around murdering entire planets.
- 1:08:43Oh, fabulous. Hey, wait, sorry.
- 1:08:46Paul. Quinn says the best.
- 1:08:47You better watch out, Mark McManus.
- 1:08:49All right, reading this out. Good luck.
- 1:08:54The best actor to play the role since Davison or Trouten and
- 1:08:57absolute love for the show shining through some of the
- 1:09:00greatest performances in the show's history.
- 1:09:03All wrecked by a showrunner repeating the mistakes of
- 1:09:06seasons 21 to 23. With hindsight, Whittaker and
- 1:09:10Chivnut should have taken over in season 8.
- 1:09:13What was Moffat doing? Cast a version of himself making
- 1:09:16him an unlikeable twat and then spent three years plus a near
- 1:09:20near long gap. Near year long gap.
- 1:09:23This was me trying to work out the Doctor's character and
- 1:09:26surprise surprise, it ended up with the Doctor still urging
- 1:09:29people to be kind. No wonder the audience cleared
- 1:09:32off. Oh dear.
- 1:09:33I think we can disregard that. 10.
- 1:09:35Yeah, he's wrong. He's so wrong, to be fair.
- 1:09:37It's worth, it's worth mentioning that he stood up in
- 1:09:39front of a room full of people to give the talk on how there
- 1:09:44was incest in ghost like novelisation at the Target book
- 1:09:48there, right? So he does come things at a sort
- 1:09:49of niche angle. The most of the recording and
- 1:09:53you'll never look at a cigar. The most shocking element of
- 1:09:57that is there's only one swear word in it.
- 1:09:59To be honest, I was expecting more.
- 1:10:02Well Dave Rennie says season 8 us a bastard season 9 bit of a
- 1:10:08bastard Season 10 you're cool cuddly grumpy uncle a superb
- 1:10:13actor but take his prior to season 10 was too harsh for me.
- 1:10:17What is wrong with these people you Lily Liver?
- 1:10:19Doctor Who fans as Clara was still around to make it through
- 1:10:23a few tough years for me, despite some gems in the
- 1:10:25stories, not so keen any. There was gems in there.
- 1:10:31Lucy McCall says, having dropped out of watching Doctor Who
- 1:10:35towards the end of Matt Matt Smith's tenure.
- 1:10:37I missed this one. Apart from Heaven Sent, despite
- 1:10:40my admiration for Capaldi as an actor, nothing I have heard
- 1:10:44about the era. It makes me want to go back and
- 1:10:46watch it. It may be a question of age.
- 1:10:48Teenage me might have found the error bold and clever.
- 1:10:51Older and more experienced me finds the very idea of a lot of
- 1:10:54it repulsive. Yeah.
- 1:10:56I Love Lucy, but. I Love Lucy, but that makes me a
- 1:10:59little sad because as we know, the Doctor Who fandom is often
- 1:11:02completely wrong about everything so.
- 1:11:05Don't listen to us, Lucy. Go make your own opinion, mind.
- 1:11:08Yeah, I also. Respect her a great deal that if
- 1:11:11she doesn't think she's going to enjoy something, she doesn't
- 1:11:14watch the lot of whinge about it.
- 1:11:15She just says no, I'm not going to watch that.
- 1:11:17Very. True.
- 1:11:18Very true. Yeah.
- 1:11:19She is missing some wonderful stuff though.
- 1:11:21She is, and there's some stuff in there she'd love as well.
- 1:11:24I think she'd love Mummy. She loves a good horror movie.
- 1:11:27Oh yes, I think so. So the next comments from Ian
- 1:11:32Banks and he says he's the best actor to have portrayed the
- 1:11:36Doctor ever. If you watch carefully, you see
- 1:11:39that he knew how to approach the character when the writers
- 1:11:42didn't. And he is the reason why I
- 1:11:45stayed a fan of the show when I was in danger of becoming a
- 1:11:48casual viewer of the 21st century iteration of the show.
- 1:11:57Bebo Pete says RTD and Moffitt bent Doctor Who into a really
- 1:12:00accessible shape for contemporary viewers.
- 1:12:03Especially when we got a couple of matinee idols in the lead.
- 1:12:06Casting Peter Capaldi was always going to be a challenge.
- 1:12:09That audience was always going to challenge the audience.
- 1:12:12But Moffat and his second lead offered them a very high
- 1:12:15percentage of quality material. One quality of that material is
- 1:12:19introspection. The question am IA Good man
- 1:12:21bookends the Capaldi era. Perhaps an audience doesn't want
- 1:12:25to see the Doctor in garage. They care when the character
- 1:12:28suffers external peril, but they never want to have to question
- 1:12:31who the Doctor is. I liked it.
- 1:12:35I'm so sorry, did I say your comment last time?
- 1:12:38Sorry, I was just wrong with it. Luke Sims Jenkins gets a few
- 1:12:45things wrong with his comments. He says they have many problems
- 1:12:47with series 8 and 9. The stories Mr. Pink fantastic
- 1:12:52as we know. The Doctor fucking Clara.
- 1:12:56Just to clarify, there is a space there, it's the Doctor,
- 1:12:59and then it's fucking Clara. It's not the Doctor fucking
- 1:13:01Clara. Thankfully sees there is a full
- 1:13:05stop there, yes. There's some grammar in there,
- 1:13:08yeah. Oh boy.
- 1:13:10Just to make that absolutely clear.
- 1:13:11Although maybe Matt Smith, I don't know actually.
- 1:13:15Tell us off Mike. And thankfully series 10 exists.
- 1:13:19Bill Potts is tremendous. And finally I fall in love with
- 1:13:23this doctor. Why couldn't we get 3 Series of
- 1:13:26this, The last three stories of series 10 being my faves.
- 1:13:31Yeah so interesting. He refused to watch series 10
- 1:13:34because he really didn't like series 9 and just assumed it was
- 1:13:38going to be more the same and then when he watched it was like
- 1:13:41one of his favourite seasons ever but he watched it like 8
- 1:13:45years later or something like that.
- 1:13:48Just just to clarify, obviously because you know, I said you've
- 1:13:50got a few things wrong there and he has got one thing very right
- 1:13:53and that is the the third or last story of season 10 is an
- 1:13:56absolute banger he does of light.
- 1:13:58Oh, David Kitchen says I agree with everything Luke says.
- 1:14:03Although I'm quite fond of a number of stories in series 8.
- 1:14:06But series 10 is my top 2 new Who seasons.
- 1:14:09Capaldi is great and gets better every year and Bill is easily
- 1:14:12the best Moffett era companion. Only if you forget about Nardo.
- 1:14:18So great. I do forget about Nardo quite
- 1:14:22frequently. Oh God, old Presser, you and I
- 1:14:27are not going to be friends, old Presser says.
- 1:14:33At least you're honest. I was so excited for Peter
- 1:14:36Capaldi becoming the Doctor, a great actor who knew about the
- 1:14:39character and what makes it great.
- 1:14:41We were going to be in for a new golden age.
- 1:14:44And then he was written as a complete count and started as
- 1:14:48the most unlikeable companion in the show's history.
- 1:14:50For two years, while they explored every aspect of misery
- 1:14:53possible, pushing the show to places it should never go.
- 1:14:59There was a brief respite from Husband of River songs.
- 1:15:02Why couldn't we have had that character two years earlier,
- 1:15:05helped by the introduction of Bill?
- 1:15:06But then it all went down the same nasty rabbit hole again.
- 1:15:09My main feeling is one of regret that we were denied something
- 1:15:12that could have been so amazing and fun.
- 1:15:14Instead, it remains my least favorite era of all Who?
- 1:15:18You said haven't we like? My brain shut down 5 minutes
- 1:15:20ago. It's a payoff for those two
- 1:15:24years, right? Is that you can finally chill
- 1:15:26out, you know? It's the peer off of me having
- 1:15:29to sit through all the River Song episodes and.
- 1:15:34Sorry for to be facetious, but you finally got rid of that.
- 1:15:36Bloody Clara was like, yes, right into the universe, let's
- 1:15:39go. Where's my wife?
- 1:15:42I'll behave. OK, the next comment is from PJ
- 1:15:47Gallery and he says or she says I don't know if a male.
- 1:15:54There's definitely a man, he's got a lovely profile picture of
- 1:15:56his pecs out. He says it's a set of episodes
- 1:16:02I've never revisited since broadcast.
- 1:16:04For that reason. It all became so joyless and
- 1:16:07bleak. The next era was joyless and
- 1:16:10worthy. Capaldi and Whittaker were
- 1:16:12excellent, but what could what could have shown was blunted by
- 1:16:16other people's production choices.
- 1:16:19He seems to be commenting on series 11 there, but you know,
- 1:16:25there's two whole eras he didn't like.
- 1:16:27Oh, PJ Gallery, I'm so sorry for you.
- 1:16:29That's that's a lot of that's nine seasons.
- 1:16:35So the brilliant Brendan Jones or the usually brilliant Brendan
- 1:16:37Jones says dramatically fascinating and brilliantly
- 1:16:40acted. But making the oldest Doctor
- 1:16:42also be a grumpy old man for so long is a predictable choice.
- 1:16:45It's so much more fun when he goes against that with fun,
- 1:16:48cheeky moments. And Capaldi Macchi's chemistry
- 1:16:51is up there with Baker, Slash, Slayden and Tennant and Tate.
- 1:16:54Oh. That's actually true.
- 1:16:56That last bit. Yeah.
- 1:16:59Oh yeah. Yeah, I've got Ian Clark then,
- 1:17:04who says it's never a good idea to make the Doctor unlikeable at
- 1:17:07the outset. It's even a worse idea to make
- 1:17:10the Doctor seem untrustworthy to his companion.
- 1:17:13Nope. But we're not talking about On
- 1:17:15an Earthly Child. We're talking about Peter
- 1:17:17Capaldi. Or John Pertwee in Series A, You
- 1:17:20know. Not even in service of a long
- 1:17:24term story arc. That said, Capaldi is always
- 1:17:27interested and he comes good in the end.
- 1:17:33Oh, sorry, it's me, isn't it? I.
- 1:17:35Just I just. Don't get it.
- 1:17:36I do not get all these comments about A and Clara in because the
- 1:17:40whole point is you're examining that relationship, right?
- 1:17:44And he doesn't quite understand how to function within it.
- 1:17:46And when the pay off is, you get that extraordinary scene at the
- 1:17:50end of Kill the Moon where she literally slaps him down and
- 1:17:53says go on, piss off, all right, I'm done with you.
- 1:17:58Oh God, it's amazing drama. What are you talking about?
- 1:18:02Sorry, who am I got to? Professor Stephen Hawkwind.
- 1:18:05Hawkwind. I actually really like the more
- 1:18:08callous, sarcastic take early on.
- 1:18:10I rather prefer the Doctor as a more patrician figure rather
- 1:18:13than the cool hipster bloke who Nicks your girlfriend.
- 1:18:16Yeah, me too. London Calling says the finest
- 1:18:20actor of the new Who Doctors with some terrific stories.
- 1:18:24Kill the Moon is as good as any classic Who classic, but like
- 1:18:27Matt Smith, much of his narrative gets drowned under the
- 1:18:30weight of Moffat's fussiness. Yet Capaldi is the one I return
- 1:18:33to and enjoy more and more every time.
- 1:18:37Like fine wine fussiness. Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:18:42I don't really know what that that's about.
- 1:18:45To do. And then I've got Nathan Botany
- 1:18:52with with a really short punchy 1 here.
- 1:18:55He's the best one. That's very economic for him,
- 1:18:59you know. And then we said we go down as
- 1:19:04far as gazbo. Was that including?
- 1:19:06Including, yeah. So go Foley says it was Hanford
- 1:19:10Capaldi was a breath of fresh air after Smith, but sadly the
- 1:19:13inclusion of Clara and her shoehorned in life over the
- 1:19:17first two years just made the Doctor's character feel hollow.
- 1:19:20Series 10 Doctor Who is back and better but all too brief for me.
- 1:19:23It was a long and numb five years previous.
- 1:19:27I'm still hearing mixed reaction to the material, but nobody's
- 1:19:32got a bad word to say about Peter Capaldi.
- 1:19:35No, yes. Despite them, sure.
- 1:19:37And you know, and you'll be pleased to hear that the
- 1:19:40second-half of these comments are far more positive, some
- 1:19:44fabulously positive ones in there.
- 1:19:47Well, given that nobody's got a bad word to say about Peter
- 1:19:50Calde, shall we just do a quick round Robin and talk about him
- 1:19:55as an actor in the role and his characterisation of the Doctor?
- 1:19:59Let's sort of mush it together. And because he'll probably go on
- 1:20:04the longest, let's go to Fraser first.
- 1:20:09Yeah, I said we'll come back to this.
- 1:20:10I think the thing you get with Peter Capaldi is The Doctors 1.
- 1:20:13You get a fan, you know, so you get someone who's got a really
- 1:20:17good understanding of the character of the Doctor and
- 1:20:20knows what he wants to do with the role, knows how he wants to
- 1:20:23approach it. He's an older actor, so you get
- 1:20:29experience as well. You get, you know, a good couple
- 1:20:34of decades on his predecessors in terms of experience.
- 1:20:37So he's making different choices.
- 1:20:40He's making, you know, different deliveries of lines, which, you
- 1:20:45know, has been been grounded in in in that sort of experience.
- 1:20:51What do we realize? They get very early on or well,
- 1:20:54perhaps halfway through series 8, is they get someone who can
- 1:20:57monologue exceptionally well. So, you know, why, why does
- 1:21:02everything have to be a big massive speech for the 12th
- 1:21:04Doctor? It's because Peter Capaldi is so
- 1:21:07fucking good at doing them, to be honest with you.
- 1:21:10You kind of see it in sort of mummy on the open express.
- 1:21:13You see in, in flat line at the end of a, you kind of you can
- 1:21:17see this light bulb go off in Moffat's head going 02 things I
- 1:21:21need to do next year. I need to, one, make this guy a
- 1:21:23bit more chilled out and a bit more funny and a bit more, well,
- 1:21:28Evan's going to see a midlife crisis, but I'm just going to
- 1:21:30see a bit more disco. And two, I need to give him a
- 1:21:33lot more opportunities just to stand there and deliver some
- 1:21:36dialogue because he's, he's so good at doing that.
- 1:21:39He's, he really is something that's obviously come to light
- 1:21:44in, in the the two strictly for Tenney and Tenby that I've
- 1:21:47listened to is, is, is obviously what was going on with Peter
- 1:21:50Capaldi behind the scenes at the time.
- 1:21:52You know, the, the chemistry that he has with Pearl Mackie
- 1:21:55is, is not born from necessarily them having a good working
- 1:21:59relationship to start with. And obviously he's been trapped
- 1:22:02terribly badly by the BBC in terms of we don't want you here,
- 1:22:07but we don't want you to leave. So come back and do this last
- 1:22:11episode, this last series, even though we are technically
- 1:22:14sacking you, you. Can't tell.
- 1:22:17You can't tell because like I said, I think his his
- 1:22:19performance gets better over the three years.
- 1:22:23So by the time you get to the end of a three, by the time,
- 1:22:26like I say, you get to that scene in the doctor halls where
- 1:22:29he sent a Rachel, tell her they know actually, we're going to do
- 1:22:32it this way because those guys should just walk off.
- 1:22:35When I'm about to give my big speech and I'm shouting at them
- 1:22:38to turn around. They shouldn't do it.
- 1:22:39I should have to run around in front of them and physically
- 1:22:42stop them. You know that.
- 1:22:44To think this is a man whose dream job basically has turned
- 1:22:49sour and he's still doing that. The sheer professionalism of the
- 1:22:53guy. Oh, I think there might have
- 1:22:56been an element of. I'm going to show you how good I
- 1:22:58am, yeah. Yeah, quite possibly.
- 1:23:01But you know, it's kind of. Like me, You're going to like me
- 1:23:03by the end of this year. You know, I can't I can't say,
- 1:23:07you know, certain other actors nowadays behaving in that sort
- 1:23:11of way without wanting to name any.
- 1:23:16You know, I just think it's it's the measure of the man.
- 1:23:19There was a comic book earlier about them, you know, going to
- 1:23:22hospices and the Doctor Who experienced in costume and you
- 1:23:26know, every time you see him offsets with fans, you know,
- 1:23:29it's he's one of these people that you like I said, no one has
- 1:23:33a bad word to say about him. John Arnold said when he waited
- 1:23:38to see Peter Capaldi with his son Eddie.
- 1:23:41Oh my God, gorgeous. And he waited for ages because
- 1:23:44they were filming and he just really wanted Eddie to me,
- 1:23:49Peter. And they waited maybe like 3 or
- 1:23:514 hours. And he was just there sort of at
- 1:23:54the edge of the set. And he said he's anyway, anyway
- 1:23:57we can. And the guy went over to Peter
- 1:23:59Capaldi and he went, how long have they been waiting?
- 1:24:024 hours. So he just came, bounded over,
- 1:24:05He just scooped up Eddie and he just gave it.
- 1:24:08And they've got a beautiful photograph together.
- 1:24:11And like, it's Eddie. That's his most treasured
- 1:24:13memory, that Peter Capaldi was appalled.
- 1:24:16But they've been kept waiting for four bloody hours to talk to
- 1:24:19him, he said. If you'd have told me, I'd have
- 1:24:21come straight away. Never mind the filming.
- 1:24:24Like, oh wonderful. Yeah, absolutely, absolutely,
- 1:24:28Gem. So look, you have him in the
- 1:24:30world. I think, you know, we'll only
- 1:24:31appreciate him more as time goes on.
- 1:24:35Dan. I think it speaks volumes that
- 1:24:38those, all of those comments, many of the people commented
- 1:24:43that he is probably the best actor to, to have taken on the,
- 1:24:48the role ever. And it's really hard to kind of
- 1:24:55disagree with that. And I, and I think it's sort of
- 1:24:59like, obviously his, as Fraser said, sort of like his era and,
- 1:25:06and he's probably renowned for those big speeches that, you
- 1:25:13know, really sort of quite bombastic with a lot of gravitas
- 1:25:17and all that sort of stuff. But I, I want to, I want to go
- 1:25:21the other way because, because I think after a while, I kind of,
- 1:25:25they kind of lost their impact for me because we were having
- 1:25:28them quite so much. I understand why we were having
- 1:25:31them because like Fraser says, he's so good at them.
- 1:25:34You're going to, you're going to get him playing to his
- 1:25:36strengths. But, but I think he's an actor
- 1:25:39that has got many strings to his bow.
- 1:25:42And, and I think it's sort of like it's, it's the little
- 1:25:46things that he does that really kind of come across for me much
- 1:25:51louder than those big speeches. You know, he, he's able to
- 1:25:56portray so much expression and emotion just by lifting an
- 1:26:02eyebrow or, you know, and, and those kind of like those little
- 1:26:07smaller moments where he, he kind of really takes it down.
- 1:26:13Just amazing. I I I was thinking it's it's in
- 1:26:19the diner at the end of of of well, it's Fredded all the way
- 1:26:23through heaven sent, isn't it, where he's lost his memory of of
- 1:26:27of Clara and he but he's relating the story and he's he's
- 1:26:32just strumming away on on his electric guitar.
- 1:26:38Clara's theme and, and, and it's just, there's just so much in
- 1:26:42that there's, there's none of this, you know, lots of
- 1:26:45bombastic speeches and all that sort of thing.
- 1:26:48It's just really quiet and you really feel the emotion, the,
- 1:26:53the loss that, that, that, that the Doctor has felt.
- 1:26:58And, and that's down to, to Peter Capaldi, because I think
- 1:27:03sometimes I, I don't necessarily think Steven Moffat is able to
- 1:27:10write the most speakable dialogue, but but you really got
- 1:27:15what was, what was kind of happening there.
- 1:27:19And and I think, and I think that's the thing and it, it kind
- 1:27:22of feels like with with Peter Capaldi as as in the lead role,
- 1:27:27you felt like you had an actor that could he could play the
- 1:27:31funny lines, he could do the emotional bits, he could get the
- 1:27:35anger, you know, the full gambit of emotions he was able to do
- 1:27:40and he was able to do them well. And I think there are a lot of
- 1:27:44doctors where you go. Yeah, he's really good at that
- 1:27:46bit, but he's not so good at that purely because I guess the
- 1:27:51actor isn't as skilled as what Peter Capaldi is.
- 1:27:54And, and, you know, he's rightly regarded as the best guy, the
- 1:28:00best actor in in the role for for a reason.
- 1:28:03And I think it just, it just comes across in, in, in
- 1:28:05everything that he does, whether it's big or small, he does them
- 1:28:09so well. Jomana.
- 1:28:12Wow. Well, other than agreeing with
- 1:28:14everything that's been said so far, it's like for me, Capaldi
- 1:28:17completely embodies the Doctor. And, you know, I came to him
- 1:28:19first and he's the one who got me hooked onto on the show.
- 1:28:25For me, he is the Doctor much more than any other of the
- 1:28:28younger actors. And that's not at all me
- 1:28:30dismissing their talent because they're all very talented.
- 1:28:33But but this is the beauty of what an older actor can bring.
- 1:28:36He has this extra life experience.
- 1:28:38And clearly Capaldi is somebody who has thought very deeply in
- 1:28:42his life and he has had quite a, you know, he has not gone like a
- 1:28:47sleepwalker through his life. So he brings, he has the depth
- 1:28:50of wisdom, the depth of character that that come from
- 1:28:54that those extra years and he pours all that into the role.
- 1:28:57Plus, of course, his long knowledge of the show and a
- 1:29:02different way of looking at the character of the Doctor.
- 1:29:04I like the deeper ways. He's definitely not superficial.
- 1:29:07And so when I look at him, I can see an alien being with a cosmic
- 1:29:12consciousness who can who, you know, brain the size of the
- 1:29:16universe who is just trying to fit in with humans because he
- 1:29:21has a huge heart as well. And he cares for them even
- 1:29:23though they drive him absolutely bonkers.
- 1:29:25I mean, that doctor must feel like the only sober person at
- 1:29:29the party all the time, which is a feeling I know very well.
- 1:29:33So no wonder he's grunt, you know, but but you know, but it's
- 1:29:38a depth of caring that if if you felt that, if you felt that
- 1:29:44deeply all the time, and you, you would also be grumpy about
- 1:29:48it because it's just unbearable to see a species, because this,
- 1:29:53this doctor sees the magnificent potential of humans while
- 1:29:57they're all behaving like, you know, squabbling brats around
- 1:30:00them all the time. It's like, you know, what do you
- 1:30:03do? And I can, I can totally see all
- 1:30:06this enormous complexity in his face, in his voice.
- 1:30:11And I think it's very telling that whenever voice actors have
- 1:30:14tried to do the 12th Doctor, like Dan Starkey or Jacob
- 1:30:18Dudman, they have completely, always completely failed to
- 1:30:20capture the complexity of the character.
- 1:30:23They always kind of, I mean, they're not terrible, but it's
- 1:30:26like they always just go for a slightly caricature grumpy
- 1:30:31Scotsman and they cannot get past it.
- 1:30:34And I don't know if you've heard recently Big Finish announced
- 1:30:38that Jon Kosher was going to. And when he does him and he
- 1:30:42captures all the incredible nuances of his voice, it's like
- 1:30:47magic. And you can't.
- 1:30:48I suddenly I was like, Oh my God.
- 1:30:52I it it kind of the contrast just amplify just how
- 1:30:57unbelievably complex Capaldi is an actor.
- 1:31:01And I don't think you can do that by thinking about it.
- 1:31:04I think you really have to be the doctor in that moment and
- 1:31:08completely give yourself to the to the parts.
- 1:31:10No, Jamal. I think Peter Capaldi in his
- 1:31:12head has been playing the Doctor since he was about four years
- 1:31:15old, so he's thought about it a long time.
- 1:31:20I think, I think he's, he's, he's done more than playing.
- 1:31:23I think he's, he's really tried to understand what it must be
- 1:31:27like to be the doctor because it's, it's, it's such a, he
- 1:31:31brings such a depth to the road and he's mesmerizing.
- 1:31:36And, and I also do agree that I've never heard anything,
- 1:31:41anything bad about him as a person.
- 1:31:42Actually, as a matter of fact, I have a friend who I'm very
- 1:31:45jealous of who's much younger than me, who used to be a
- 1:31:47waitress in the cafe that where he went regularly.
- 1:31:51And she says he he is the most lovely and they always had
- 1:31:55lovely conversations. I never patronized her.
- 1:31:57He had the more he was like a grandfather having very
- 1:32:00respectful conversation with her.
- 1:32:02And there's another, some other actor who I, I will not name
- 1:32:05who, who was not that nice at all.
- 1:32:10So. I, I recently had a conversation
- 1:32:12with, I was somebody that worked on the set throughout the
- 1:32:15entirety of Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi's time.
- 1:32:19And obviously I wanted the gossip.
- 1:32:20I wanted, you know, give me all the Goths, you know, and I heard
- 1:32:24it, all the dramas on the set, you know, that Coleman was a
- 1:32:28complete monster at times, You know, all this stuff and all of
- 1:32:31this stuff, right? And then I said, come on, Peter
- 1:32:34Capaldi. And he just went total gentleman
- 1:32:37without fail. Total gentleman.
- 1:32:41Yeah, it's almost too good for the doctor here, isn't it?
- 1:32:46Yeah. So, you know, I kind of, I, I,
- 1:32:48I, I look at him and I feel safe because he is a doctor to me.
- 1:32:53And he may not have the social graces that that this particular
- 1:32:57doctor, but I would completely kind of trust him no matter
- 1:33:01what, even how even if he's very weird, behaving very strangely.
- 1:33:05And and you know, I know much more difficult people in my
- 1:33:07mother. So that's not, I'm not at all
- 1:33:11put off by that. So.
- 1:33:12I'm right here, you know, OK. Joe, you are you are a puppy in.
- 1:33:17Comparison. No, I.
- 1:33:19Know I know put up was in the Middle East so you know yeah, so
- 1:33:23I could go on all night about this but I think I've said.
- 1:33:27We'll do some more commentaries, you know, so you can do that.
- 1:33:30Don't you worry, Mark. Yes, probably not much I can add
- 1:33:35to that. I think.
- 1:33:36Yeah, he's, he's brilliant in the roles that I said at the
- 1:33:39start, you know, he's my favorite new series doctor.
- 1:33:41As Germano said, he's he's transcendent.
- 1:33:44He's he has your attention the whole time that he's on the
- 1:33:47screen. He's always doing really
- 1:33:49interesting things. He's the Doctor.
- 1:33:51That was not just because he's my favorite, but the one I was
- 1:33:54least ready to, for him to leave because he was still doing new
- 1:33:58interesting things in a way that maybe Tennant wasn't and and to
- 1:34:02a lesser extent, Matt Smith wasn't.
- 1:34:04Felt like Peter Capaldi still had places to, to to go with it
- 1:34:08and was still, you know, kind of enjoying it, exploring it like
- 1:34:12that. And yeah, just from the point of
- 1:34:15view and being an ambassador for the show, you know, like,
- 1:34:17there's so many lovely stories like that, like, say, about John
- 1:34:20Allenson and that. There's a really moving story.
- 1:34:23I think it's from season 8 when the mum brought her autistic
- 1:34:28daughter along to to meet him. And she's been having a hard
- 1:34:31time accepting the change of Doctors.
- 1:34:35So the Peter Capaldi took her to one side and showed her a photo
- 1:34:40on his phone of him with Matt Smith and Jenna.
- 1:34:42Jenna Coleman from the regeneration from the, from the
- 1:34:47regeneration said, look, you know, we've, they, they've said
- 1:34:50it's fine for me to play with the Doctor.
- 1:34:51Hope it's OK for you as well. And it's just such a lovely,
- 1:34:54lovely thing that he, you know, he understood that.
- 1:34:57He took the time to explain it. I met him at convention a few
- 1:35:00years ago as well. It was up in Edinburgh and he
- 1:35:04was just doing autographs that day, but he was doing autographs
- 1:35:07all day long. He stayed well beyond the time
- 1:35:10that he was supposed to because everybody wanted to meet him.
- 1:35:14He gave all the money from the autographs to charity and he
- 1:35:20made sure that he had time with everybody to have a bit of a
- 1:35:24conversation, everything. It was the most comfortable
- 1:35:28because it it kind of, you know, you get an autograph from
- 1:35:30somebody. It's a little bit of a sort of
- 1:35:31an awkward, weird situation, isn't it?
- 1:35:34But it was the most comfortable, easy kind of meeting of a of a
- 1:35:38style like that, you know, kind of ever had.
- 1:35:41He was he was absolutely superb. And the the kind of the Stew was
- 1:35:44also on side handed the phone and he would sort of take a
- 1:35:46photo of you meeting him. Capaldi was aware of that.
- 1:35:49While he was having a conversation, he was looking at
- 1:35:50the camera a little bit. He was smiling.
- 1:35:52It was he was just a total pro and just absolutely kind of
- 1:35:55tireless all day doing it. And that's I'd already left.
- 1:35:58But it's where that clip of him, I think he finally come up with
- 1:36:02a guitar and he took the guitar and sang David Bowie Starman.
- 1:36:07So that was, you know, kind of really popular at the time that
- 1:36:09that was that day as well. So even after like an entire
- 1:36:11full day of signing autographs and stuff, he was entertaining
- 1:36:15and just, yeah, he just seems to one of those just kind of very
- 1:36:18admirable people that you say nobody's got a bad word about.
- 1:36:21He's a total, total gentleman, kind of a a really good role
- 1:36:25model, I think. And it doesn't matter who wins
- 1:36:28this episode. We won by having Peter Capaldi
- 1:36:31playing the Doctor. Absolutely.
- 1:36:33I will just add because wonderful things for everybody
- 1:36:37there, but I always think about his natural eccentricities as
- 1:36:42well as the Doctor and how effortless that is.
- 1:36:45So it's that bit in, I don't really like the episode, but
- 1:36:49he's great in it. Doctor Mysterio, where it's a
- 1:36:52really tense moment and they're there in Harmony Shoal and he
- 1:36:56just turns up and he's just eating his take away and he's.
- 1:37:00Sushi it's. Coming, coming just pulls back
- 1:37:04and he's eating sushi and he said what I bought a snack.
- 1:37:08Or that reaction in Last Christmas, which is a banger of
- 1:37:11an episode. What is it?
- 1:37:13You've got a movie called Alien that's so racist.
- 1:37:17I mean, it's offensive, so offensive, so funny.
- 1:37:21All that bit in The Girl Who Died where he goes, oh, electric
- 1:37:27eels, he goes of his face with crazy eyes.
- 1:37:31It's just wonderful. And just little moments as well.
- 1:37:34Less the grandstanding, less the speeches, because I don't really
- 1:37:37like the speeches either, especially like that last one,
- 1:37:39which feels like it went on the length of a Bible.
- 1:37:41But the bit in Kill the Moon where she's going at him and
- 1:37:46he's sort of falteringly going to her.
- 1:37:49That was me respecting you like, and he just can't believe he's
- 1:37:52got it so wrong. And he's throughout the 1st 5
- 1:37:56was except, so he's had all the answers and he's been witty and
- 1:37:59acerbic and all of that. And he just can't say anything
- 1:38:02to her to, to, to, to bring her down because she's so angry.
- 1:38:06And he, he plays that on the back foot so brilliantly.
- 1:38:09There's just loads of little moments like that.
- 1:38:11Whoever said that those little moments, sometimes they're not
- 1:38:14even written, you know, But he, he finds those moments.
- 1:38:17It's like what I always quote the Barry Let's line of even if
- 1:38:23the material isn't always up to scratch.
- 1:38:25We won an actor that you can't take your eyes off, and that's
- 1:38:30what they've got. With Capaldi, he's always doing
- 1:38:32something. You know, you could have Oscar
- 1:38:35winners. Actually, he's an Oscar winner,
- 1:38:36isn't he? Yes.
- 1:38:38Yeah, OK. You can have other Oscar winners
- 1:38:40and you wouldn't be looking at them.
- 1:38:41You'd still be looking at Peter. Well, I mean, where is this love
- 1:38:46going to take us? Sleep no more?
- 1:38:48Are you going to win? Let's find out, shall we?
- 1:38:51Do our second round of comments then before we go into the last
- 1:38:54round. Before the grand finale.
- 1:38:57Our grand finale beating Capaldi episode.
- 1:39:00Oh fellas, wait till you everybody listens to this list
- 1:39:04of episodes we've got in the finale, right?
- 1:39:06So we are starting with Mike Hickman and we finished on Mark
- 1:39:11so Fraser. Oh my Kickman then says that I
- 1:39:16love both Capaldi and Whitaker. Probably has me down as a marked
- 1:39:19man. I do tend to think that both
- 1:39:22were better than the material, but Revisit and Jodie makes me
- 1:39:25aware of the tonal misfires of the 12th Doctors era were worse
- 1:39:30than I remembered. The cremation thing.
- 1:39:33Oh, we've talked about that Tamara way.
- 1:39:35Yeah. And I, I still don't get it.
- 1:39:37I still don't don't get it. Someone else that you probably
- 1:39:39won't get is Chris Winwood. Who says I bailed out after the
- 1:39:43first 3 or 4? Now we know Fraser's missus did
- 1:39:46this as well, so same rational people can reach this conclusion
- 1:39:49too. Oh no way she's married to
- 1:39:51Fraser. Dr. Snide and I'm listening.
- 1:39:54Writing smug and over complex. No fun.
- 1:39:57There is fun robot Sherwood. Clara hiding under the child
- 1:40:01Doctor's bed and scaring her into saving the universe.
- 1:40:04Yuck. I gave up after that.
- 1:40:06Till Jodie. Well, you missed a lot of good
- 1:40:08Doctor Who then. Chris Winwood, I'm afraid.
- 1:40:13Jason Thompson says Capaldi is superb with everything he's
- 1:40:16given. The creative decisions about his
- 1:40:18Doctor far less so making him so unlikeable.
- 1:40:22For God's sake people, what is wrong with you?
- 1:40:25Making him so unlikeable and suddenly lacking in empathy was
- 1:40:29I think not the right move for a character established as a hero.
- 1:40:33OK, I have to say say this doctor never lacked in empathy.
- 1:40:37God. Also he was not written as
- 1:40:40unlike, but he was traumatized and just it's it's there.
- 1:40:45It's all there. And the story that she just
- 1:40:46stopped stopping at the surface, I don't know.
- 1:40:49I think I'd like a boy. It's such a weird gauge though,
- 1:40:52because like, you know, like there's people that I know in my
- 1:40:55life who are absolute camps and they're so likable, you know,
- 1:40:58but someone else will probably look at them and go, well, that
- 1:41:00person is so horrible, you know, but it's.
- 1:41:04It's that classic thing with them, the demons, the Doctor
- 1:41:07story, the demons where the Doctor.
- 1:41:10Is electrics. But he is the on the he's, he's
- 1:41:16the good guy. And then you have the very
- 1:41:18likeable, very small, very sophisticated master who's
- 1:41:23obviously the the Ragan. So it's like, what do you want?
- 1:41:26Do you want likeable and evil, or do you want unlikeable and
- 1:41:31good? Yeah, I'm starting to to read
- 1:41:33unlikeable as does not conform to my expectations.
- 1:41:36Of what? What the characters would be and
- 1:41:39it's I think with I really like Jason Thompson.
- 1:41:42So, you know, sorry, sorry to kind of kill you out, but you
- 1:41:45know, you're kind of the camels, the straw that rolled the camels
- 1:41:49back. You bought the Judas.
- 1:41:51Good. We're covered for you, Jason
- 1:41:53Thompson. All right.
- 1:41:55I think it's the user interface though, isn't it?
- 1:41:58It's it's a case of like as we said earlier, both David Tennant
- 1:42:04and Matt Smith, their doctors could be absolute Dick heads,
- 1:42:09but because they've got the pretty interface, it's not so
- 1:42:13noticeable because it's wrapped up in a, in a, you know, a nice
- 1:42:16looking. You think this is an image thing
- 1:42:18then Dan? I think it is because because
- 1:42:20obviously Peter Capaldi's the old craggy grey haired man.
- 1:42:25And, and and I think it's it's it's the superficial kind of,
- 1:42:31you know, the, the interface isn't quite as pretty as the
- 1:42:34previous two. Therefore, I'm it, it feels like
- 1:42:38the unpleasantness is is ramped up.
- 1:42:42That's that's how I see. And I think he's very pretty.
- 1:42:45Peter Capaldi. To get the same for.
- 1:42:47The gorgeousness. But you know, I think, I think
- 1:42:48this is a very British society kind of thing where you guys are
- 1:42:52so addicted to politeness that any, any times.
- 1:42:55And personally, coming as a foreigner, I think politeness is
- 1:42:58a socially acceptable way of being rude.
- 1:43:01But as long as it's polite, they're fine.
- 1:43:05That the moment they're honest and they drop the polanis,
- 1:43:08you're like, you know this is not acceptable, you're rude.
- 1:43:11Unlikeable condom. Like fuck sake man.
- 1:43:15Oh, hang on. So does that mean I could be
- 1:43:16honest on this call? Right, Fraser, I've got a list
- 1:43:19here of issues that I've got with you, OK.
- 1:43:22Again, do I have to go through this again?
- 1:43:2756 Reasons for Our Masters of Death was the most tedious
- 1:43:30moment of my life. Now I'm joking.
- 1:43:32I'm joking. But but anyway, the, the, the
- 1:43:34doctor's core has not changed. This doctor is still putting his
- 1:43:37life on the line for saving people.
- 1:43:39Who cares whether he he's nice on the surface, I don't care.
- 1:43:43He's still going to save my life.
- 1:43:44You know, I don't care if he he's, I don't, but.
- 1:43:48Some people don't know how to express that stuff.
- 1:43:51I know people that don't know how to express kindness.
- 1:43:54They they, they behave in a kind way, but they don't know how to
- 1:43:58like, do it verbally and emotionally sometimes, and
- 1:44:01that's OK. Exactly, exactly.
- 1:44:04And I will talk about this later in my choice so.
- 1:44:07OK, well, you know, remember, you're addressing the ham fam,
- 1:44:10all right? They listen to this bullshit
- 1:44:12like they're not the most savvy of people, Dan.
- 1:44:15Please give us. OK, well, Next up, we've got
- 1:44:18your your nemesis Joe. We've got Michael Storm.
- 1:44:21He's. Gonna love it, then he'll love
- 1:44:23it. Yeah, here we go.
- 1:44:25As you might expect from your nemesis, I bloody love most of
- 1:44:29this era. Capaldi brought back the harsher
- 1:44:32gruffer edge to the Doctor that had been largely absent from New
- 1:44:36Who. He has that dangerous edge that
- 1:44:38you had from early Hartnell and Hinchcliffe stroke Holmes era.
- 1:44:42Tom, I like the less user friendly take and I have a
- 1:44:47different reading of some of his harsher moments throughout the
- 1:44:50run. Capaldi never puts a foot wrong
- 1:44:53in his acting. I agree with him.
- 1:44:58Stephen Rhodes says I enjoyed seeing this.
- 1:45:00Doctor's slow transformation, Insufferable twat from space to
- 1:45:03the kindest granddad in the universe over three series.
- 1:45:07I don't think any Doctor actor could have done this as well as
- 1:45:09Capaldi. He was perfect.
- 1:45:11Liked him with Bill, loved him with Clara.
- 1:45:13I just wish we'd had more of him as a semi mythical university
- 1:45:17lecturer. That was a genius idea.
- 1:45:19We've gone from grumpy to insufferable twat now.
- 1:45:22How bad. Oh I'm so pleased that Fraser
- 1:45:26gets to read out James Larks comment.
- 1:45:28These are the positive comments. Job, OH.
- 1:45:30Yes, I'm so sorry. Maybe I'll put some at the end I
- 1:45:35think. Well, I was I was hoping I was
- 1:45:37going to dodge an essay, but this is the point where I have
- 1:45:40to see if anyone needs a piss break.
- 1:45:41Go now, because James Lock writes the following.
- 1:45:46Capaldi's Doctor is charismatic, complex, warm, witty,
- 1:45:49simultaneously very human and completely alien.
- 1:45:52It is hands down the most interesting interpretation since
- 1:45:55the siege returned in 2005. All of this in spite of Oh.
- 1:46:00God, we were doing so well. You're doing so well.
- 1:46:05I am tearing my hair out. The initial attempts at making
- 1:46:09him edgily dark and dangerous are so cacanded you wonder what
- 1:46:13the hell they thought they were doing.
- 1:46:14They were writing for Malcolm Tucker.
- 1:46:16Whipping through this. It's even more egregious that
- 1:46:19then it's sorry. It's even more egregious than
- 1:46:23the stuff Colin was given because it's so arbitrary and
- 1:46:26inconsistently applied. Ditto the attempts at whimsy,
- 1:46:30invariably underscored with Murray Gold's most unsubtle
- 1:46:33look. He's been eccentric.
- 1:46:35Everyone there's a carto strings.
- 1:46:38That and all of the cool grandad stuff is proper behind the sofa.
- 1:46:41Cringe and in lesser hands would be completely unwatchable.
- 1:46:45This before he ends this. This is how you literally do a
- 1:46:48shit sandwich right? Go frozen.
- 1:46:53That Capaldi not only managed to sell all this, but somehow comes
- 1:46:56through with his dignity and the Doctor intact speaks to his
- 1:46:59skilfully judged performance and magnetic screen presence.
- 1:47:03I think he's magical and frequently deserved much, much
- 1:47:07better. Now, look, I don't want you
- 1:47:09people coming at me, all right? I'm not responsible for these
- 1:47:11comments. I'll just assemble them, OK?
- 1:47:14Carolyn Arnold very succinctly says the 12th doctor was the one
- 1:47:19to fully unmask and show their autism.
- 1:47:23That's a really interesting angle.
- 1:47:24It is and it's it's one I I want to push back a little bit on.
- 1:47:28I hope I don't offend anyone by doing so, but my youngest son is
- 1:47:33autistic and I can see where this reading of the 12th Doctor
- 1:47:39comes from. We talked all the time about him
- 1:47:41being unfiltered. He doesn't have the social
- 1:47:43niceties, he doesn't have that ability to recognise social
- 1:47:47clues, to know that he is saying the wrong thing, that he's
- 1:47:49upsetting people and and all the rest of it.
- 1:47:52And that is a a very autistic reading.
- 1:47:54But the issue I have with with reading the 12th Doctor as
- 1:47:57autistic is that it's all played for laughs.
- 1:48:01You know, every time he does this, and it's especially
- 1:48:03prevalent in nearly part of Series 8, it's very much done in
- 1:48:08order to get a laugh, usually at the expense of Clara's
- 1:48:10appearance. So, you know, things that you
- 1:48:13have got a very moon faced shape, you know, and, and that
- 1:48:17sort of stuff. So you have the element where,
- 1:48:20you know, autistic people will say things and it will, oh, I
- 1:48:24can't believe you said that. It's hilarious.
- 1:48:25And it kind of misses the other side of that where they will say
- 1:48:29some unbelievably kind and unbelievably beautiful things.
- 1:48:32I'll give you an example from my son.
- 1:48:34We had a conversation with his head teacher.
- 1:48:36And, you know, the subject came up and he said, oh, yeah, I've
- 1:48:39noticed. You know, he asked me the other
- 1:48:42day why I had so many chins and we all kind of yes, but he said,
- 1:48:48you know, he counted that. The other week I showed him a
- 1:48:50photo from, I think it was, you know, 5-5 years ago.
- 1:48:54And he told me, you know, yes, why I looked younger now than I
- 1:48:57did in that photo. So, you know, you get you get
- 1:49:00the other side. We don't say that with with this
- 1:49:02doctor. So I I kind of no.
- 1:49:05I counter that then, sorry, I know we do have to go to bed
- 1:49:07tonight, but I absolutely think he says incredibly kind things.
- 1:49:12And I don't think it's always played for laughs either.
- 1:49:15Occasionally it's played for laughs.
- 1:49:16It's it's not done in that sort of, you know, I am not reading
- 1:49:20this. The the room sort of weird is he
- 1:49:23says kind things because he is being kind basically he says.
- 1:49:26So as well, I do think to be fair to Carolyn, everybody's
- 1:49:29experience of autism is different and if that might
- 1:49:33absolutely be within. Her life.
- 1:49:36Her experience of autism. It's, and this is what that's
- 1:49:38why I said at the start, you know, I hope I don't offend
- 1:49:39anyone. You know who who has that
- 1:49:41experience by seeing that book? You know, my, my, you know, my
- 1:49:45lived experience kind of has me kind of pushing back against
- 1:49:49that as a reading. Well.
- 1:49:52Of the 12th Doctor. But yeah, absolutely everyone
- 1:49:54else's experience is going to differ, but I think.
- 1:49:57It's a fascinating reading though.
- 1:49:59It is and that's the beauty of autism.
- 1:50:00You know, there is no one way of, you know, every autistic
- 1:50:05person is, is different from every other autistic person.
- 1:50:07There isn't. It's wider spectrum basically.
- 1:50:10It's not just a 1, you know, one-size-fits-all box sort of
- 1:50:14approach. You really have got to look for
- 1:50:16the the the subtleties and the nuances with with every artistic
- 1:50:19person there. Well, I'm very pleased that I
- 1:50:21get to say on behalf of David Greene.
- 1:50:24Oh, Capaldi is glorious. Possibly the best actor to play
- 1:50:28the part. Sea Snake was a wobbly one, but
- 1:50:30seasons 9 and 10 might be my favorite of New Who.
- 1:50:33Missy Bill, even Nado. What's not to love?
- 1:50:40Lord Rev Called says Capaldi was very good, Pearl Mackie and Matt
- 1:50:44Lucas were excellent, and Michelle Gomez was lots of fun.
- 1:50:47However, the writing became a huge turn off for me.
- 1:50:50It's an era I never go back to through choice.
- 1:50:53Make. The choice, make the choice.
- 1:50:55Yeah. And Mummy on the Express
- 1:50:58back-to-back. Go and watch Robert of Sherwood
- 1:51:01go and watch in the first of the night go and watch eat as if
- 1:51:07light to. Be oh listen to this next comic
- 1:51:10go down. OK, so MV Lang says Capaldi is
- 1:51:16the exact opposite of Pertway. The higher the hair, the better
- 1:51:21the story. I mean what 1 can always tell
- 1:51:24where one is in the Capaldi ever by the size of his bouffant?
- 1:51:28That is true. Supreme Human says I prefer I
- 1:51:34prefer more light hearted Doctor Who and I'm afraid his era was
- 1:51:37written was rather too dark for my taste.
- 1:51:39It's much better in Torchwood, where darkness was more welcome
- 1:51:43in the show. We like dark.
- 1:51:47I don't like Torchwood. Now you?
- 1:51:51I'm not sure. That keep it.
- 1:51:52Dark. That was mostly comedy, wasn't
- 1:51:54it? Tortured.
- 1:51:56Mostly crap, wasn't it? It was something.
- 1:52:00It was something we'll, we'll agree on that.
- 1:52:02So keeping it formal, Mr. Alistair says.
- 1:52:05Very recently watched it all, many episodes for the first time
- 1:52:08since broadcast. I genuinely loved it all.
- 1:52:13Apart from the death of Bill. Spoilers.
- 1:52:15She doesn't die at the end. My son and I decided, once
- 1:52:18finished, not to carry on into the chimney era.
- 1:52:21Well, Mr. Alistair, you and your son are missing out.
- 1:52:23Carry on into the chimney era. It is a treasure trove of
- 1:52:27goodness. Yes, I get another +1.
- 1:52:29Chris Curtis, I welcome the crotchety or there's a new,
- 1:52:32there's a new word, crotchety and alien nature of this Doctor
- 1:52:35Stark contrast to the unlikable nature.
- 1:52:38Sorry it didn't likeable nature. David and Matt think Clara was
- 1:52:42the wrong companion, and it felt at times that the role was
- 1:52:45shared between the two. You don't like strong women?
- 1:52:48Chris Curtis? What's going on there?
- 1:52:50So Mercurial flips between serious and comical in a
- 1:52:53heartbeat. Yeah, that's the show, isn't it?
- 1:52:55Yeah, that's that's the best Doctor Who, isn't it?
- 1:52:57Yeah, and that's an interesting point.
- 1:52:59Then crotchety because obviously the first.
- 1:53:01Doctor want to go to bed tonight All right, the. 4th Doctor's
- 1:53:04alien, but we're seeing unlikeable for the 12th.
- 1:53:06No. Why can't he be crotchety?
- 1:53:07Why can't he be alien? Why can't he be everything?
- 1:53:10We describe the other thing. Yeah.
- 1:53:13OK Kane Parker says absolutely love him.
- 1:53:15A welcome change from 10 and 11. Peter and Jen are absolutely
- 1:53:19frustrated together. Possibly my favorite team from
- 1:53:22you who aside from 10. Donna regularly revisit his era
- 1:53:25and has some truly classic episodes in it.
- 1:53:29Excellent. Nice.
- 1:53:31This is a great name CSO Fringe. I think he was a very good oh,
- 1:53:41is it worth missing that? I think he was a very good
- 1:53:44doctor. It's just a shame that the show
- 1:53:46became tonally very dark, levelled out somewhat when Bill
- 1:53:52arrived. James Sylvester says the doc
- 1:53:57that made me break my no favorite Doctor rule.
- 1:53:59His portrayal portrayal made me feel seen in a way that actually
- 1:54:03shocked a little and he was probably the finest actor to
- 1:54:06take the part on. He's more like it.
- 1:54:08We're on a row now, folks. Come on.
- 1:54:10Yeah, we'll go. Here's another one.
- 1:54:11Alex Hargrove. Adore his era.
- 1:54:14He's up there with John, Tom and Peter as one of the four best
- 1:54:17Doctor Who's. While he is Peter, I
- 1:54:19particularly love series 10 out of series 10.
- 1:54:21So much that I have this prop from the Doctor study hanging in
- 1:54:24my own Home Office, which works wonderfully on podcasts.
- 1:54:28Yeah, we can't see it, but what prop has he got the the is it
- 1:54:33the rug? Carry on, I shall report back.
- 1:54:38Colin Neil says I loved him and I loved his era.
- 1:54:41Pert We bake Times 2 all rolled into one season. 10 is perfect
- 1:54:45Doctor Who for me. Good man.
- 1:54:48Charlie Barnes One of the rare occasions when this fandom was
- 1:54:52unanimous was when he was announced as a Doctor.
- 1:54:55We all thought he was inspired casting and that he would kill
- 1:54:58it, and we were correct. This era of the show can be
- 1:55:01summed summed up as 2 middle-aged Scotsmen living out
- 1:55:04their childhood fantasies and I'm all here for it.
- 1:55:08Wonderful, wonderful. OK so the next comment is from
- 1:55:16PlayStation Gamer 187 and he says.
- 1:55:19I didn't really like him to begin with but after rewatching
- 1:55:27with my little one he's now in my top five of Doctors.
- 1:55:31He has all the alien vibes of the 4th Doctor but with the
- 1:55:35wonderful dry wit of Edmund Blackadder.
- 1:55:39Loved Bill too, a refreshing change from Clara.
- 1:55:42I feel like we need a comedy sound effect for every time
- 1:55:45somebody says grumpy crotch to you.
- 1:55:46Whatever. Right.
- 1:55:47Can you choose one? What's a What's a popular sound
- 1:55:50effect from the Capaldi era that I could kick in there?
- 1:55:53Just have him shouting get these.
- 1:55:55No, no, no. Just go in.
- 1:55:57Shut up, shut up. I'll put that.
- 1:56:01In all right, I think that or or putting brains every time the
- 1:56:05same like. That would be a good one.
- 1:56:06I'll take that one. Alex Wilson says everything got
- 1:56:12better in his last season. I think everything, not just
- 1:56:16Doctor Who, but everything got better.
- 1:56:20Just just to confirm then before we go on, Scott, that Alex
- 1:56:22Hargrave has got a painting and hanging in his Home Office.
- 1:56:27I don't recognise it, but if he says it's from the US 10 I shall
- 1:56:31believe him. How are you in Alex Hargrave's
- 1:56:33Home Office? Wibbly wobbly timey whammy.
- 1:56:37Anyhow, Scott says. I could have gone so wrong.
- 1:56:43You saying that? Scott says.
- 1:56:46Brilliant. Overall, after a note or even
- 1:56:48start, which isn't unsurprising or uncommon, they weren't quite
- 1:56:52in the pocket to begin. Including Missy, the next two
- 1:56:55had extremely strong streaks. He might be my favorite, though.
- 1:56:59I really like Megan Trouten and all the new ones.
- 1:57:02We've got a sort of Knickerbocker glory metaphor
- 1:57:05going on from Dave Crowley, Greatest doctor ever.
- 1:57:08It has little bits of the other doctors put into him.
- 1:57:11Excuse me. Which is capped off with the
- 1:57:14cherry of Peter Capaldi's presence.
- 1:57:16Bam. Amy says.
- 1:57:19I love his portrayal. He's my favorite Doctor and I
- 1:57:22think his era is fantastic. Right now Season 8 is my
- 1:57:25favorite of his seasons. I think Peter Capaldi had a very
- 1:57:28strong sense of who the Doctor is and how he wanted to play the
- 1:57:31character. Yes, I would agree with.
- 1:57:33That we're on a snowball going down the hill of love.
- 1:57:36Now come on, let's see. Next up we've got a bewildered
- 1:57:41Badger who says whilst his era is host to a few to a few of my
- 1:57:46least favorite stories in the history of the show, the average
- 1:57:50quality is very high. In addition, Capaldi, Coleman
- 1:57:55and Gomez are free of the finest actors to appear in the show.
- 1:57:59We were fortunate to get them together.
- 1:58:04Edward Gillooly, since I wasn't particularly a fan of his era or
- 1:58:08his portrayal. Clara stayed a season too long.
- 1:58:11His final season was much better with Bill in it.
- 1:58:13In truth, there are very few of his episodes that I want to
- 1:58:16watch again. Do it just.
- 1:58:20Go and watch it. Go watch some some of the ones
- 1:58:22we've talked about. I don't really like his comment,
- 1:58:26but he's got a great surname isn't he I.
- 1:58:30Think like I've found when I haven't liked an era of Doctor
- 1:58:34Who, if I go and rewatch it, I totally reappraise it and see it
- 1:58:39in a different, a different light because, because I think
- 1:58:41that happened with with me and, and, and Chris Chibnall and
- 1:58:45Jodie Whittaker, because it wasn't, it wasn't something that
- 1:58:47really hit home when it was broadcast.
- 1:58:50But since going back to it and rewatching it a couple of times,
- 1:58:53it's like, I can really see how how much better it was than what
- 1:58:59I originally thought. So it's always worth, you know,
- 1:59:01rather than going, oh, I don't go back to that.
- 1:59:03Give it a go. Give it a go and and and you
- 1:59:05know. What it is, it's that fan
- 1:59:07mindset of, yeah, it's coming out now as shit.
- 1:59:10So to go back and watch the previous era and automatically
- 1:59:12you re evaluate that. It's that and disappointment,
- 1:59:16isn't it? Of, you know, I expect this to
- 1:59:17be something, it's not something, therefore I don't
- 1:59:20want to. But like I say, every time I go
- 1:59:22back, I enjoy these, this era, the stories more and more.
- 1:59:25Jamala said it earlier. I think, I think the people came
- 1:59:28in with massive expectations of what Capaldi was going to
- 1:59:32deliver and maybe don't do that. Maybe just go in and see what
- 1:59:36he's doing. I was expecting it to be a bit
- 1:59:40Markham Tucker. I was expecting it to be like,
- 1:59:42ah, Davros, come the fuck in or fuck the fuck off.
- 1:59:47Kind of get that. So I.
- 1:59:48Wasn't expecting him to throw Davros out of his chair though.
- 1:59:50Oh God. That's a terrible.
- 1:59:52That's a bad choice. Anyhow, moving on, Michael
- 1:59:57Muslin, I didn't like his portrayal and wasn't a fan of
- 2:00:00the 20 monologue every other episode.
- 2:00:04Not a fan of Clara as she was irritated and annoying.
- 2:00:07And please, enough with the companion who saves the bloody
- 2:00:10universe, that's the Doctor. Bill was so much better a
- 2:00:15companion. Well, Bill saved the bloody
- 2:00:17universe as well, so. Yeah, so did Donna.
- 2:00:20So did all of them, Martha. Well, I'm very pleased, One,
- 2:00:25that these lengthy comments are over, and two, that I'm ending
- 2:00:29on a positive comment here from Jan.
- 2:00:32Just Jan. I don't know who you are, Jan,
- 2:00:34but I'm assuming by this comment.
- 2:00:36You're wonderful. My favorite Doctor from any era.
- 2:00:40Emoji covered in kisses. He reminded me of a classic
- 2:00:44Doctor, that he was sharp and as quick as any of the modern
- 2:00:47Doctors. I adore his entire era.
- 2:00:51Season 9 is my favorite. Well, nobody's perfect Jan.
- 2:00:54The intense relationship with Clara was total perfection and
- 2:00:58Bill and Nardo were great too. Hiss are.
- 2:01:03Boy, I mean, I've seen some passions flaring up in those
- 2:01:05comments there from you bunch, you know?
- 2:01:08The thing that struck me about those comments was very
- 2:01:10polarized. It's either I love it, I love
- 2:01:12it, I love it, or I hate this Very, very little.
- 2:01:16Actually in the middle with that it's it's very.
- 2:01:22Well, everybody, a great a great decision now is facing us.
- 2:01:30I'm going to give you the list of winners.
- 2:01:32Obviously robot of Sherwood is in with a chance of winning this
- 2:01:35as well, which would be true to strictly form.
- 2:01:39So the winners list that we have to choose from is Listen, Kill
- 2:01:44the Moon, Sleep No More, Oh my God Sakes, Thin Ice and Empress
- 2:01:52of Mars and Robot of Sherwood. And I think we should probably
- 2:01:59start this time with that delicious man from Trap 1, Mark
- 2:02:03McManus. Well, the list I've got has got
- 2:02:07another story which I was going to.
- 2:02:08Pick and last Christmas. Well and last Christmas.
- 2:02:15Ho ho ho. Yeah, I I absolutely adore last
- 2:02:19Christmas is my favorite of the Christmas specials.
- 2:02:22I think particularly where where it comes after series 8.
- 2:02:27It's it's it's I can't say it's for all of them.
- 2:02:31It's really fun and funny, but it's also it's creepy, it's
- 2:02:35exciting. It's just it's a brilliant idea
- 2:02:37that the dream crabs that the whole thing if not knowing if
- 2:02:41you're in reality or a dream, like I think everybody at some
- 2:02:44point has that in a dream where you think you've woken up, but
- 2:02:47you haven't and that kind of thing.
- 2:02:50So it that whole sort of, you know, idea of not knowing what's
- 2:02:55real and what isn't worked really well.
- 2:02:59I remember going into it and thinking Doctor Who's been on
- 2:03:02over 50 years. We've seen the trailer with Nick
- 2:03:05Frost as Santa, a Doctor Who's so mercurial and, and, and
- 2:03:12unexpected. It could be Santa or it could be
- 2:03:15something else like it's, it's, you know, at this stage, this
- 2:03:19stage, Santa could turn up as a character and Doctor Who, you
- 2:03:22wouldn't, you wouldn't rule it out.
- 2:03:23We've had Robin Hood in the previous series.
- 2:03:25So the the you know, what's to say it won't it won't be the
- 2:03:28real Santa. And then I think there's a
- 2:03:31really clever thing going on where obviously Santa is real,
- 2:03:35obviously, but in this story it isn't the real Santa.
- 2:03:39And there's a really clever thing going on with the way that
- 2:03:42each person that Santa interacts with, he is he's sort of a
- 2:03:45mirror of that person, which kind of is a clue that he is,
- 2:03:50you know, a projection fit for each of those people.
- 2:03:52So when he speaks to Clara, first of all, on the rooftops,
- 2:03:55he lies to her, which echoes that whole series eight thing
- 2:03:58that, you know, mentioned before about Clara kind of learning to
- 2:04:00become a more adept at lying through becoming more like the
- 2:04:04Doctor. When he talks to the Doctor, he
- 2:04:07immediately starts talking about alien races, talking about the
- 2:04:10slave being bigger on the inside.
- 2:04:12And then when he's talking to Ashley and Shawna, he's all kind
- 2:04:16of like modern and sassy and he's like My Little Pony and all
- 2:04:19that kind of stuff. And so it's that whole thing of
- 2:04:22whoever he's talking to, he he's a he's a mirror.
- 2:04:24That person. I thought was was like a really
- 2:04:26brilliant touch that I think I know it's on like the second
- 2:04:28watch or something like that. The dream crabs are a really
- 2:04:32muffety kind of alien, aren't they?
- 2:04:33Because they they're not just scary looking, but they they
- 2:04:37play with your perception and play with your reality and all
- 2:04:39that kind of stuff as well. And it kind of, you know, they
- 2:04:44didn't really go anywhere, but it kind of kind of at the time
- 2:04:47made me start thinking about, you know, is this because they
- 2:04:50wake up and it looks like the planet where Clara was
- 2:04:52destroying all the the TARDIS keys and stuff, didn't it?
- 2:04:56So it was. Very economic use of a set
- 2:04:58there, yeah. Yeah.
- 2:04:59So then it was like, well, are they, are they unwriting the end
- 2:05:01of the last series or something like that?
- 2:05:03But that kind of didn't go anywhere.
- 2:05:04But it kind of it, it's any of those sort of things.
- 2:05:07It makes you wonder where the dream crabs actually actually
- 2:05:10came in you. Think during that episode they
- 2:05:12went could you just film this bit please while we got the set
- 2:05:15up. That's it.
- 2:05:19So yeah, I just, I thought it's a just a brilliant all round
- 2:05:24story. It's got a, you know, echoes of
- 2:05:26The Thing and Alien, all that stuff.
- 2:05:27It's got that great line that you mentioned before, Joe,
- 2:05:29about, you know, it's a horror movie called Alien, so
- 2:05:32offensive. It's brilliant.
- 2:05:35And then you talk about Capaldi being, you know, all those
- 2:05:38comments about, you know, kind of being joyless and dark and
- 2:05:41whatever, and you have the Doctor ride in the sleigh at the
- 2:05:45end and it's just, it's just pure.
- 2:05:47Joy. What does he say?
- 2:05:48Yippee, Kaye. Yeah, it's it's it's a
- 2:05:56wonderful, joyous story and yeah, definitely my favorite
- 2:05:59Christmas special. Well.
- 2:06:00Do you know what? I'm going to put a spanner in
- 2:06:02the works again because I want to make figures more interesting
- 2:06:07in this winners because I want to choose last Christmas as
- 2:06:13well. So we're going to go in
- 2:06:14immediately with two votes for last Christmas to see how this
- 2:06:17goes. And I want to highlight one
- 2:06:20moment in particular that I think captures the confidence of
- 2:06:25Doctor Who so perfectly. And it's everything I love about
- 2:06:30Doctor Who is a moment in the base when the dream crabs attack
- 2:06:34everybody and it's really tense and all these horrible things
- 2:06:38are coming down from the ceiling with squiggly arm legs and going
- 2:06:41on people's head to some things. And then it cuts to these toys
- 2:06:45coming in in slow motion. Hello.
- 2:07:25It comes Santa Claus, and suddenly it's the campus thing
- 2:07:28you've ever seen in your entire life, and it's gone from horror
- 2:07:30to high camp in a heartbeat. And that's Doctor Who for me,
- 2:07:34man. And the confidence of that, I
- 2:07:36mean it, it shouldn't work at all.
- 2:07:39And they just get away with it brilliantly.
- 2:07:41I mean, the nerve of Shona waking up with that bloody list
- 2:07:46of films that have inspired this episode of Moffat.
- 2:07:49You have got some nerve. But I admire your confidence.
- 2:07:52You know, I think Clara's amazing this as well.
- 2:07:56There's one moment where she's genuinely terrified when she's
- 2:07:59under that desk and that the goo from the green drink pad is on
- 2:08:04her shoulder and she's screaming.
- 2:08:06You don't often see Clara in that typical companion role of
- 2:08:10being absolutely terrified, and she does it brilliantly.
- 2:08:14Just everything about these things.
- 2:08:16I remember watching this I it was the last episode I watched
- 2:08:19with a member of my family, my nephew Reese, and we snuck out
- 2:08:25to his bedroom because no one else in my family is going to
- 2:08:27watch it. And we sat and watched and we
- 2:08:28were both just gripped and had the best time with it.
- 2:08:32Yeah, I think it's the best Christmas special.
- 2:08:35It's certainly top 10 new who for me.
- 2:08:38And so on that list of episodes I've listened, I could make a
- 2:08:41case for as well because I think, listen, it's delicious,
- 2:08:45especially in how it refuses. I mean, Ma for half goes to me.
- 2:08:48Well, what was knocking on the door?
- 2:08:50What was under the bed? I'm like, oh, will you shut up?
- 2:08:53I mean, that is why it's scary. For God's sakes.
- 2:08:57The knife last Christmas. Yes, that's two votes for.
- 2:09:00Last, I'm gonna say very quickly, Nick Frost also.
- 2:09:02I think he's absolutely brilliant.
- 2:09:04Sweet Papa Crimbo, all that. Stuff.
- 2:09:08Doesn't he turn off his sleigh with a car key?
- 2:09:13It's so great. OK, who are we going to go to
- 2:09:17next? I think we should leave Fraser
- 2:09:19till last. That'll be the longest.
- 2:09:20So, Gemana. Yes.
- 2:09:24Winner of choice. I'm going with listen.
- 2:09:29Okay, so sorry, I'm going to my notes a bit because it's past my
- 2:09:32bad time and the brain fog is setting in.
- 2:09:36So I think it is a very subtle episode.
- 2:09:40So on the surface, it's a thought experiment where the
- 2:09:43question is left absolutely unanswered.
- 2:09:46So whether you lean towards one type of explanation or the
- 2:09:49other, it depends very much on on your own makeup.
- 2:09:51And the writing is so careful not to give more weight to one
- 2:09:56or the other. So how you read so you know, you
- 2:10:00can't say this person is wrong or that person is wrong.
- 2:10:02The episode does not give any answers.
- 2:10:05And how how you react to that is also the, you know, very, very
- 2:10:12much up to you whether it fascinates you or disappoints
- 2:10:14you or makes you uncomfortable or even makes you angry.
- 2:10:17It's a personal thing. And I feel like the viewer is
- 2:10:20invited to ask him or herself, how do I feel about not knowing
- 2:10:25and about not having the answers?
- 2:10:26How does that make me feel? So how?
- 2:10:30Does it make you feel? Me, I love it.
- 2:10:34It's actually something that I very much put in my work.
- 2:10:38It is. It's a trademark of my work that
- 2:10:40I use Writing that you cannot read so that you can tell that
- 2:10:44something is written, but you cannot read it because this
- 2:10:48feeling of mystery, I find it absolutely gripping.
- 2:10:52And the moment you have the answer, it it just vanishes.
- 2:10:55So I make sure that you cannot read the answer.
- 2:10:57And this tension is never dissipated.
- 2:10:59So, So for me, something like this where you want to know but
- 2:11:04you can't know, it's really, I don't know how to describe this
- 2:11:09feeling, but I love it. You know, it just keeps me
- 2:11:13going. So yeah.
- 2:11:18So a few, a few things that I love about it.
- 2:11:22There's a beautiful line in it that's quite profound.
- 2:11:25And it's, it's, it's a throwaway line, but it's like he when the
- 2:11:28doctor says the deep and lovely dark would never see the stars
- 2:11:31without it. And that is so profound.
- 2:11:34You could take that and meditate on it and you could read it on
- 2:11:38so many levels. And that's just a just a line
- 2:11:42that says in passing that has no bearing on the story.
- 2:11:44But it's a beautiful line. I love how he's portrayed in
- 2:11:48this episode. It's his third one in this
- 2:11:49incarnation. It's so early.
- 2:11:51All things human are still completely going through his
- 2:11:54head and going over his head. Sorry.
- 2:11:57And great example. He he, he, he, he parked the
- 2:12:02target, sorry, the TARDIS in Clara's bedroom.
- 2:12:04And he's like, I thought I'd better hide in the bedroom in
- 2:12:06case you brought him home. Like he's not being a jerk.
- 2:12:11He's so dead, isn't he? From another planet, you know,
- 2:12:15it's like he just so you know, I it's so funny and at the same
- 2:12:21time it's very endearing and talking about the how different
- 2:12:25people express different things. So he can appear to be uncaring.
- 2:12:28For instance, when Clara is upset after her date, he doesn't
- 2:12:31really respond to that in any any way that appears caring.
- 2:12:35But 5 minutes later when his face was a scared child, he's
- 2:12:37really good. He doesn't get any softer, but
- 2:12:40he has this great little pep talk.
- 2:12:42So, so clearly he does care. He just has his own way maybe of
- 2:12:46expressing that and of responding to these situations.
- 2:12:52So I don't want to go on too long because I'm leaving.
- 2:12:53I'm leaving the big piece for the for last.
- 2:12:56So the the different pieces of the story, they fit so well
- 2:13:00together, but with a lighter touch than Moffat usually has.
- 2:13:03And there are some really, really beautifully written
- 2:13:06moments. For instance, there's a kind of
- 2:13:08a mirroring at one point when the Doctor is really worried
- 2:13:12about Clara and he wants her to get safe and without arguing
- 2:13:16with him, he stops being flippant and he just really
- 2:13:19shouts at her like you do, as you are told, get into the
- 2:13:22TARDIS. And so she she doesn't argue,
- 2:13:25just get in there. And then later on when she's
- 2:13:27worried about him and she wants him to get safe without arguing
- 2:13:31with her, she stops shouting. That's when she stops shouting
- 2:13:35and she goes really soft instead.
- 2:13:38And it's just, it's, it's really interesting and, and subtle, you
- 2:13:42know, now. But for me, the, the, really
- 2:13:47the, the meat of this and that is that is the underlayer.
- 2:13:50That is what's hidden underneath this beyond the sci-fi adventure
- 2:13:54and the awkward romance, which is hilarious and the kind of
- 2:13:58thought experiment. This episode is about listening
- 2:14:01and you know it's hidden in place.
- 2:14:03I the, the title is listen, but it is about listening, listening
- 2:14:06to the other person, right. So Clara starts out, she's very
- 2:14:09sad centred in this season. She's it's all about her and she
- 2:14:13reacts to all the characters as if the world revolves around how
- 2:14:16they they make her feel. She takes everything personally.
- 2:14:19She's very defensive. And in this episode, we start
- 2:14:22with Clara thinking the Doctor is off on another weird and
- 2:14:26dangerous obsession. And it doesn't occur to her for
- 2:14:29a moment that it there's something that he is freaked out
- 2:14:32about and he needs to exercise it.
- 2:14:34He he needs to find an answer about it.
- 2:14:37And similarly with Danny on the date, she's completely oblivious
- 2:14:40to the fact that maybe he's he's tired of being judged solely by
- 2:14:44his former profession and, you know, being being like AI don't
- 2:14:49know, he being pigeonholed because he was a soldier.
- 2:14:51So in both cases, she's not attentive to the people who are
- 2:14:54in front of her. She's just going with her own
- 2:14:56prejudice, right? And by the end, after everything
- 2:14:59that happens, she's finally looking beyond herself and she
- 2:15:02is listening and empathizing. So she can finally see that the
- 2:15:06doctor and the doctor, that the harsh exterior is basically an
- 2:15:09armor that he has around himself because there's a great
- 2:15:13vulnerability inside because he's so raw.
- 2:15:15And she also starts seeing that Danny also, he's in protective
- 2:15:18mode and that both men are scared in their own different
- 2:15:22ways. And she needs to bridge that if
- 2:15:23she wants those relationships to work out.
- 2:15:26And she's completely changed by the end because she started
- 2:15:28listening. And if that's not a lesson to us
- 2:15:31all, particularly certain fans, I don't know what is.
- 2:15:35All right, I'm right here, you know?
- 2:15:40Oh, Joe, what you're you're swaying me towards.
- 2:15:42Listen now, maybe I'll change my mind.
- 2:15:44Let's see what everyone else has got to say, Dan.
- 2:15:49I've gone for Empress of Mars. It's that great big drill, isn't
- 2:15:57it? Well, I love an Ice Warrior, as,
- 2:16:00as you know, Joe. Yeah, because God Engine is a
- 2:16:05very good book. But yeah, yeah, so I think it's
- 2:16:09it's it is quite a mad thing that I realised that when I
- 2:16:12picked my 2 that from the runners up and from the winners
- 2:16:18that they're both Mark Gatiss scripts, which which is is weird
- 2:16:26because because it's not normally someone who I find I
- 2:16:31find him quite hit and miss. But I think he writes really,
- 2:16:34really well for Capaldi and and the 12th Doctor.
- 2:16:39But yeah, that, that, that's by the by.
- 2:16:41Really. So I want to go in with the big
- 2:16:45guns 1st. And it's not the drill.
- 2:16:48It is the fact that we have Alpha Centauri making a cameo at
- 2:16:54the very end of the story. Will.
- 2:16:56They make. It.
- 2:16:58Oh yes, in fact, this might be the beginning of the Martian
- 2:17:03Golden Age. Are you receiving US, Mars?
- 2:17:07Are you receiving? This is Irexa, Queen Empress.
- 2:17:12Of Mars. Ah, excellent.
- 2:17:14We have received details of your situation.
- 2:17:17We would be happy to send a fleet to your aid at once.
- 2:17:21A physical marker of some sort would be appreciated to guide
- 2:17:25our ships to. Whom?
- 2:17:26Am I speaking? This is Alpha Centauri.
- 2:17:38Welcome to the universe. You're so voiced by Yassane
- 2:17:43Churchman, who was the original voice during the Perkway era.
- 2:17:47And you're not allowed to bring that up without doing an
- 2:17:49impression, I'm afraid. I can't.
- 2:17:52There's no way I could get that, honey.
- 2:17:54I'm really in the nuts. Well, yeah, I might have been
- 2:17:58able to do it when I was about 11 or 12, but not now.
- 2:18:04Yeah. And to be honest, I think that
- 2:18:07is enough for the wind. So I don't know if I need to say
- 2:18:09any more really. You don't think about Peter
- 2:18:14Capold or anything, just Alpha Centauri, Yeah.
- 2:18:16Yeah, yeah. You want more, I'm guessing.
- 2:18:20OK, OK, I've got I've got more. I'm I'm teasing.
- 2:18:26So what I like about this, yes, it is a very traditional Doctor
- 2:18:31Who is probably one of the most traditional Doctor Who's from
- 2:18:35this era, I would say possibly knew who.
- 2:18:38But then it is a Mark Gatiss script.
- 2:18:39So he he kind of that that that was his his thing, wasn't it?
- 2:18:44I love the way it starts off with a mystery that, you know,
- 2:18:47we're there in the, you know, Mission Control of NASA and you
- 2:18:55know, we've got the, the, the rock formation of God Save the
- 2:18:58Queen. You've got, you know, you're
- 2:19:00thinking, well, the, the viewers thinking, what does that mean?
- 2:19:04How did that get there? But also the doctor Nardo and
- 2:19:07Bill were thinking that as well. So they go off to discover that.
- 2:19:10And I, I, I think really, it's one of those things that plays
- 2:19:16to all the things that I really, really love.
- 2:19:19It's an, I just love the fact that Victorian British soldiers
- 2:19:27could get to Mars. That is just a an amazing kind
- 2:19:31of kind of concept and I love. To who, isn't it?
- 2:19:36Yeah, yeah, because there's need, EDA isn't there with Peter
- 2:19:42Davidson and Turlo. Oh, Imperial Moon, Yeah.
- 2:19:45Yeah, Yeah, yeah. That's.
- 2:19:47Where? It is as fun as this though.
- 2:19:48No, no, no, no, but Oh no, no, it isn't.
- 2:19:53But you know, I just love those visuals of the fact that their
- 2:19:57space suits look very much like those very old fashioned diving
- 2:20:02diving suits. And you've got like the.
- 2:20:05You've got like the gramophone kind of speaker that that for
- 2:20:09the, you know, and I just really love those kind of little,
- 2:20:12little, little things like that, you know, so, so it's great to
- 2:20:15find that you've got these Victorians on on Mars and
- 2:20:20they've got this kind of steampunky kind of kind of get
- 2:20:24up a bit, you know, that's a great visual.
- 2:20:28I, I, as I say, I really love the ice warriors.
- 2:20:32They're probably my favorite returning alien species.
- 2:20:37I, I don't know why, because a lot of the time the stories that
- 2:20:40they're in aren't very good, but I, I, I really like them.
- 2:20:43And I think this is, this is an example of new who taking an old
- 2:20:48monkster look and, and making it better.
- 2:20:53And I don't think that always happens, you know?
- 2:20:55Hello, hello, the Zygons. That woman.
- 2:20:58What? What's that woman's name?
- 2:20:59She looks fabulous. That ice.
- 2:21:02Ice only, is it? Oh God.
- 2:21:05Araxa, isn't it Araxa? Yeah, You know, so, so I, I and
- 2:21:10it and it and it's the first time we ever see the Ice
- 2:21:14Warriors on Mars as well. So that's that's really cool.
- 2:21:17Like you say, that's the first time we see a female Ice
- 2:21:22Warrior. We've seen the Ice Lords, the,
- 2:21:24the, the normal, I swear he is. But we've, we've actually got,
- 2:21:26you know, an Empress. She's just a Bill, Dan.
- 2:21:30Oh, these noisy men. Noisy men, will you please help
- 2:21:35them? Make a decision, please, Bill.
- 2:21:37Yeah. And I think that I think that's
- 2:21:39really good because, because I love, I think it's quite a good
- 2:21:42story for Bill because there is that element of the Empress
- 2:21:46going, well, what do you think? You're a female.
- 2:21:48What do you think? Because everyone else is male,
- 2:21:51you know, sort of thing. And I think that's really cool.
- 2:21:53I love that line. When is it Godsaker's laughing
- 2:21:58at the thought that that a, a policewoman could, could be a
- 2:22:01thing. And then she's going, I'm going
- 2:22:04to make allowances for your Victorian values because.
- 2:22:07You are Victorian. You.
- 2:22:08Know, I just think that's a really good line.
- 2:22:12It's witty, isn't it? Yeah.
- 2:22:14Witty writer. Yeah.
- 2:22:16And, and also, I think I like that, that redemption story, for
- 2:22:19for God's sake. So obviously he, he was an
- 2:22:23officer in the army. He got, they attempted to hang
- 2:22:28him for cowardness. And, you know, for whatever
- 2:22:33reason, it didn't, it didn't kill him.
- 2:22:35He found the Ice Warriors and he ends up in charge of more people
- 2:22:39and more more soldiers and the fact that when when the ice
- 2:22:44warriors are coming up through the ground again, he he he he
- 2:22:48goes to pieces and and legs it, but he does come back and and
- 2:22:54obviously stops catch love, who's another mustache twirling
- 2:22:59villain in the in the kind of that kind of style.
- 2:23:03And yeah, you know, but but and then, then, you know, obviously
- 2:23:08he he sort of, I guess he wants Araxa to kind of finish, finish
- 2:23:15the job really, you know, to because he feels that he hasn't
- 2:23:18made the most of his second chance.
- 2:23:22And because of his, you know, actually standing up and being
- 2:23:26heroic at that point, she kind of gives him a third chance.
- 2:23:30And he has this opportunity to to help the Ice Warriors kind of
- 2:23:34kind of rebuild. And I think that that's really
- 2:23:36quite a nice, a nice sort of story and like, say, ends on a
- 2:23:42high because we get our man or what?
- 2:23:46No Gen. the neutral what? Is it?
- 2:23:49Yeah, hermaphrodite hex. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:23:54Coming back, we get Alpha Centauri.
- 2:23:55I mean, I mean, who was actually expecting that when we when we
- 2:24:00first watched it? Because.
- 2:24:01And it's just like. Oh yes.
- 2:24:03That's a great. Yeah, when the macro came back,
- 2:24:06I literally had the same reaction.
- 2:24:07When I saw our episode tomorrow, I was like.
- 2:24:09Yes, yes, yeah. So there's a lot to love here.
- 2:24:13I know it isn't one that is popular amongst fans, but.
- 2:24:17You love it. That's.
- 2:24:18What? I love it.
- 2:24:19It's another fun story, another fun sort of rompy kind of, you
- 2:24:25know, thing. Yes, it isn't dark as some of
- 2:24:27these other ones. And and yeah, again, if logic
- 2:24:31was to prevail, I'll probably would be going to listen or, or
- 2:24:35whatever. But for me, I really enjoy this
- 2:24:39one. So this is the one I'm pushing
- 2:24:41forward. But yeah.
- 2:24:43I can't believe you didn't mention people getting turned
- 2:24:45into bouncy balls. Oh, I mean, that is the best
- 2:24:48thing about that whole episode. See, that's one he knows better
- 2:24:51than to mention. Balls in front of you, Yeah.
- 2:24:55We have met fans. I mean, what's great visual
- 2:24:58though? Really.
- 2:24:58All the limbs sort of go in. They got boring boring, boring.
- 2:25:02Funny, I think that's one thing I was a little bit disappointed
- 2:25:05with because I kind of like that old school, sort of like wibbly
- 2:25:08wobbly. Of the mirror long.
- 2:25:10Yeah, yeah. I don't see why they couldn't
- 2:25:13have kept that, but hey, you know.
- 2:25:15Well, shall we find out if we've saved the best till last our
- 2:25:20Fraser? Now, Fraser, I just want to
- 2:25:22remind you the position you're in right now and given you're
- 2:25:25making the choice, I better start the camp music, right,
- 2:25:30Fraser, you, you're either going to let last Christmas win
- 2:25:32because it has two votes already, or you're going to put
- 2:25:35in a vote for Listen or Empress of Mars and it'll be a deadlock,
- 2:25:41in which case the person that didn't vote for those two will
- 2:25:44have to make the choice. Or you're just going to go for
- 2:25:46something else entirely and just be a typical you listen.
- 2:25:50I mean, it's last Christmas. It's it's not the best Peter
- 2:25:56Capaldi Christmas special. There's there's 2 better than
- 2:25:59it, Mysterio and husband's a bit of a song.
- 2:26:03Why? Why did we put up with him on
- 2:26:05our respective podcast? I mean, you've got the patience
- 2:26:07of a St. and I do too. I mean, yes, you've come on the
- 2:26:11both of us have talked about last Christmas, and yet not one
- 2:26:14of us has mentioned the one thing that would possibly swear
- 2:26:17me to vote me for it, which is Danny Pink.
- 2:26:20Not one of yours for. Who in that Santa costume?
- 2:26:22Yeah, Danny Pink's in this one. Let's let's mention him.
- 2:26:24So shame on you guys. But listen, Empress of Mars,
- 2:26:32ultimately, you know, I can't sit here and say I'm going to
- 2:26:35vote for either one of those just to stop last Christmas from
- 2:26:40winning because ultimately listen, I have a few wishes with
- 2:26:45listen. I think listen has got some of
- 2:26:47the single stand out scariest moments in all of Doctor Who
- 2:26:51full stop in it. It's also got a lovely ROM com
- 2:26:55bit with me, man, Danny Pink in it.
- 2:26:57And it's also got this sort of delve into law, into the
- 2:27:02doctor's childhood. I just don't think all three of
- 2:27:05those belong in the same episode, which is the feeling I
- 2:27:08got the last time I watched. Listen, Empress of Mars, yes, I
- 2:27:14agree with everything that's said about that.
- 2:27:17You know, it's great fun. You know, Victorian soldiers on
- 2:27:22Mars having tea and cake being served by an ice warrior.
- 2:27:25I mean, there's just so much to enjoy about there.
- 2:27:28But again, you know, it's, it's interesting that we've got all
- 2:27:33three of marketers scripts for Capaldi in the final for this
- 2:27:37and again members. Underrated writer, you know?
- 2:27:41Yeah. The two going into this that was
- 2:27:44sticking out was there is 2 stories there that were like
- 2:27:47these ones are sticking out as the ones.
- 2:27:49So I was like which which one should I go for?
- 2:27:51Should I go for the one where you know the doctor makes the
- 2:27:54companion decide whether the the poor innocent creature lives and
- 2:27:58dies and they have this big emotional blowout or that I go
- 2:28:04for kill the moon instead. Ultimately my, my gut says go
- 2:28:14for kill the moon because, you know, again, you know, listen
- 2:28:18back to the episode you guys talked so much about that final
- 2:28:21scene where you know, the, the the doctors made Chloe make the
- 2:28:25choice in the back of the Taurus and he realizes he done fucked
- 2:28:28up. You know, he's literally on the
- 2:28:31stairs and you can just see his face just drop as he realizes I
- 2:28:35have got this so, so long. Any back pedals and he tries to
- 2:28:38get himself, he tries to explain his way out of it and he just
- 2:28:41feels miserably. And it's that wonderful line.
- 2:28:43He said, I will slap you so hard you will regenerate that you
- 2:28:47know that it's just those two are the very, very best that
- 2:28:51they are. But there's so much else to
- 2:28:54enjoy in that episode. I love the very start of it.
- 2:28:56I love Doctor Who, you know, and you know, the TARDIS lands on
- 2:29:00the space which is about to land on the moon.
- 2:29:02And, you know, the Doctor comes out and he's in his red space
- 2:29:06suit and, you know, rather than just flashing the psychic paper
- 2:29:10or anything, he talks his way in the confidence of these people.
- 2:29:13And he is hopping around testing the gravity.
- 2:29:16And he is just using his words. And he kind of sledgehammers
- 2:29:20them into just saying, I am the Doctor.
- 2:29:21I am here. I will, whatever is going on, I
- 2:29:23will help you with this. And that bit's just brilliant.
- 2:29:28You know, this the spider, I hate spiders.
- 2:29:30I'm freaked out by all the spider stuff going on.
- 2:29:34You have this little horror thing, but then you get to the
- 2:29:36real story that's being told you thank you.
- 2:29:40Which is all about the choice. You know, it's it's the Doctor
- 2:29:45making club. I make this choice as to what
- 2:29:48the what she's going to do. That's that's the crux of the
- 2:29:51story. The moon is an egg, so fuck it
- 2:29:54means nothing. Right.
- 2:29:56It's just it's, it's so inconsequential to the the
- 2:29:59actual story and everyone gets hung up.
- 2:30:02I know. Well, the moon's an egg.
- 2:30:03That's just a stupid plot thing. It's.
- 2:30:04Not the police box is an interdimensional time machine.
- 2:30:08You know, like, get over it. I mean, there's there's so much.
- 2:30:11I mean, we could we could wheel Jason Thompson and just place
- 2:30:14the talk and head and just get to see all the signs.
- 2:30:16That's why Wheeling back out again.
- 2:30:17But if you're going. To do that.
- 2:30:20That's not the point, man Doctor Who is is littered with
- 2:30:23inaccurate science and, you know, plot holes and things
- 2:30:26going wrong. Look at what the story is doing.
- 2:30:29Look, this is we've said this is the series of life said this is
- 2:30:32this the era that examines the count of the doctor more than
- 2:30:35any, you know, this is this is the 7th doctor element of him
- 2:30:39coming out and just being laid bare and being gotten so wrong.
- 2:30:44It's just it's electrifying stuff that whole that whole
- 2:30:47point and the the resolution is is so perfect.
- 2:30:50I think it's undersold completely by mummy on the
- 2:30:52express coming up. But that's not this episode's
- 2:30:55fault. This one gets it, gets it so
- 2:30:57right. So, you know, I was going to be
- 2:30:59like all about kill the Moon and then then we'll put Robot a
- 2:31:01Sherwood through and you know, fuck it, if I'm going to.
- 2:31:03If I'm going to this better not be a prelude for robot or show
- 2:31:07being your I've. Already said what I'm going to
- 2:31:08say about robot or Sherwood. I think it's fantastic it's it's
- 2:31:10so much more fun so let's vote for that last Christmas is going
- 2:31:14to win because I'm going to vote for something different but I
- 2:31:17will go out on my models and I will say out of the suppose it
- 2:31:23123457 stories the the one that if I was to turn this recording
- 2:31:30off and go and watch a Peter Capaldi episode out of those
- 2:31:32seven it would be robot of Sherwood.
- 2:31:34I would have the best time with spoons and fucking golden arrows
- 2:31:39at the end and and all the rest of it and yeah for me please.
- 2:31:43Such a shame you said that, phraser, because you know what?
- 2:31:46You were so beguiling then. I was about to be the worm
- 2:31:48turning. I was going to move my vote
- 2:31:51across to kill the moon and it would have won the episode.
- 2:31:54Although I just. No, no, no.
- 2:31:56You've made your choice, I'm afraid.
- 2:31:59What if you can change your? Mind I can change my mind?
- 2:32:00Oh, actually you can actually. Yeah, call them.
- 2:32:02Let's do kill the moon. I'll still kill the moon.
- 2:32:05Well, I've changed my mind again then, because just to keep the
- 2:32:07suspense going just a little bit longer now.
- 2:32:10Now. Last Christmas.
- 2:32:11Yeah. And listen.
- 2:32:13And kill the moon. So not Empress of Mars.
- 2:32:16Let's be serious. Those three right are just all
- 2:32:19bangers. Are they absolute bangers?
- 2:32:21Now, please, will each of you give me one reason, man, I've
- 2:32:25got. I could choose anyone.
- 2:32:26Jomana, listen. Just one reason.
- 2:32:27Anything. Oh dear God, can I, can I not go
- 2:32:32first? Oh, OK, Mark, last Christmas.
- 2:32:36I mean, I don't need much convincing.
- 2:32:37Look at you, but come on. I think Dan Starkey is another
- 2:32:43brilliant person that we didn't mention in last Christmas.
- 2:32:45He's great as one of the elves. He's absolutely here.
- 2:32:47Is he called Wolf or something like that?
- 2:32:49It's brilliant. Is a great reason Fraser killed
- 2:32:52the moon. Mining Novice is also excellent
- 2:32:56in Killed the Moon and this lends a very interesting dynamic
- 2:33:00when the choice is being made by the three sort of generations of
- 2:33:04women making that decision as to the future of the moon.
- 2:33:09You've just reminded me I can't bear her in that episode.
- 2:33:11Kill the moon's out, Jomana. Terrifying.
- 2:33:14Terrifying. It's terrifying.
- 2:33:16It is terrifying, especially if you came home to bed, you know,
- 2:33:19you went up to bed and something was on the bed with the sheets
- 2:33:22over it like. Don't, don't I?
- 2:33:24I'm going to have to turn the lights off.
- 2:33:26Oh, yeah, you're home alone today, aren't you?
- 2:33:28Always forgetting. Oh, you've got out of bed and
- 2:33:30somebody grabbed your foot. I mean, Jesus Christ.
- 2:33:33Oh, shit my pants. Oh God.
- 2:33:35Last Christmas or listen. Last Christmas.
- 2:33:37Or listen. They're both buffets as well.
- 2:33:40Yeah, and, And listen, listen, it's got Danny Pink in it that
- 2:33:44killed the moon. Last Christmas has also got
- 2:33:46Danny Pink. Yeah, you don't like you don't
- 2:33:48like Danny Pink. But Danny Pink is really likable
- 2:33:51in Last Christmas because he's not actually Danny Pink.
- 2:33:53He's sort of fantasy Danny Pink in.
- 2:33:55Fantasy Danny Pink. Yeah, but.
- 2:33:58You have double Danny Pink in medicine because you have
- 2:34:01awesome pink and you have Rupert thing.
- 2:34:03Oh, it's. Full of an amazing sequence in
- 2:34:05the future with something banging on the doors.
- 2:34:08Bang Bang bang. Oh my God I've got to make a
- 2:34:12choice. This Camp Suspense music has
- 2:34:13been going for far. Too long.
- 2:34:15Now I know what we can do. We can all turn our lights off
- 2:34:17to help you decide. Just like and kill the moon.
- 2:34:22No. Oh no, sure.
- 2:34:23No, I just remembered the line. This is the clincher.
- 2:34:27I've just remembered the line. It's so muffy as well.
- 2:34:33What is it? I will mark you, Santa says.
- 2:34:36Shona. Last Christmas is our winner.
- 2:34:40If Santa was only in the dream, why was he on my roof?
- 2:34:494 4 patients, 4 manuals Do you know what I hate about the
- 2:35:00obvious? What?
- 2:35:02Missing it, Matthew were not saluted.
- 2:35:11You're the same people as before of.
- 2:35:13Course they are. Oh.
- 2:35:13Sorry I deleted you well. That's not a very nice attitude,
- 2:35:16is it? 4 Manual, Jess.
- 2:35:20Yes, Why? One each, one each.
- 2:35:22Yes, what's the problem? Well, the problem is you can't
- 2:35:25see the problem. What instance?
- 2:35:27You gotta be 1. I have a name actually.
- 2:35:30Doesn't matter, I don't need it. When we first met you in the
- 2:35:33Infirmary, what were you doing? It's a long story.
- 2:35:36Uptight boss one, What is the primary mission of this polar
- 2:35:40base? It's a long story.
- 2:35:42Sexy 1 What brings you to the North Pole?
- 2:35:45Your age. It's a long.
- 2:35:47Story. OK, why are they all giving the
- 2:35:50same answer? Because that is a tiny bit
- 2:35:51freaky. Everything that's freaky.
- 2:35:53Try this. We were in the TARDIS.
- 2:35:56Why did we come here? It's a long story.
- 2:36:03Doctor. Dreams.
- 2:36:05They're funny, they're disjointed, they're silly,
- 2:36:11they're full of gaps. But you don't notice because the
- 2:36:15dream protects itself, stops you asking the right questions.
- 2:36:19For example, why do you have 4 manuals, one each, when you have
- 2:36:23a crew of eight? What did you forget about your
- 2:36:28friends and the infirmity here? But we woke up.
- 2:36:32Dreams within dreams, I warned you.
- 2:36:35This isn't a dream. I know it isn't.
- 2:36:36No one knows they're not dreaming, not one of us, not
- 2:36:40ever, Not for one single one of our lives.
- 2:36:45Clara page number make it a good one. 12.
- 2:36:53Very. Very, very.
- 2:37:00Hey. Come on, that is a great light.
- 2:37:02Although to be fair, some worthy winners there.
- 2:37:05But wouldn't you say? Yeah.
- 2:37:08They're great, Doctor, and let's be honest, how some of those
- 2:37:11Capote episodes weren't in that list, well, it's madness.
- 2:37:15It's it's strictly. It is strictly.
- 2:37:17I wouldn't have been disappointed with Listen winning
- 2:37:19because I did champion that I think in the season 8 A 1, so
- 2:37:24yes. I adore a lot.
- 2:37:26I think it's pure genius. You know that Chardis has all
- 2:37:29got candles in it at the start. I listen, you know, the camera
- 2:37:32sort of sweeping around dark music.
- 2:37:34Well, everybody, Last Christmas goes into our finale of finales
- 2:37:40alongside School Reunion and Mind warp guy dread to think
- 2:37:50what's going to come out of the other doctors because, you know,
- 2:37:53I do want you to get some sleep tonight.
- 2:37:55Let's very quickly tell everybody where we are online
- 2:37:59should they wish to come and find us or podcasts or anything
- 2:38:01you want to plug. Mark, I believe you do a bit of
- 2:38:04podcasting. Yes, you can.
- 2:38:06You can hear me on the Trap One podcast, which assembles a new
- 2:38:10group of fans each week to form a panel to talk about a new
- 2:38:13release or event from the world of Doctor Who.
- 2:38:16And you can find me on Twitter or Blue Sky is at
- 2:38:20Quarkmarkmiles. I just very quickly say as well,
- 2:38:23you mentioned when we talked about Empress and Mars there
- 2:38:25about Victorians on the moon. There's a brilliant trilogy of
- 2:38:28Paul Mars books. I think it's called something
- 2:38:31like The Lost Girl on Mars or something like that.
- 2:38:35I don't think it's that well known, but they're absolutely
- 2:38:37brilliant. And you know, if you talk to a
- 2:38:39fan, you're probably familiar with Paul Mars writing, which is
- 2:38:41always fantastic, but I would seek those out because they're
- 2:38:44along that vein as well. You only have to say Paul Mars
- 2:38:48and I was sold. Fraser, where can't people find
- 2:38:53you on podcasts? No way, I think I've everywhere
- 2:38:58now. So you can find me on the dying
- 2:39:01embers of Twitter at at Felix Razor or one merge Razor with
- 2:39:04AZ. You can find me likewise on Blue
- 2:39:07Sky as well. There.
- 2:39:09Don't do that though. What I would do want to.
- 2:39:11What's the word I'm looking for? Plug.
- 2:39:17Plug yes, that's it. I want to plug the YouTube
- 2:39:20channel. It's app Doughnut, so it's it's
- 2:39:24without the the comma in it under score AP donut AP DOHNUT,
- 2:39:32which is my autistic son that I mentioned.
- 2:39:35He has got a YouTube channel. Now what he's doing is he's
- 2:39:39playing his Roblox videos. He's videoing them and his mum
- 2:39:41is putting them online every day.
- 2:39:43So please make a 7 year old child very happy by going and
- 2:39:48watching some of his videos. Like and subscribe, as the kids
- 2:39:50will say, you'll make his day. You really will.
- 2:39:53Bloody love doughnuts. I'm there, Chamana.
- 2:39:57I'm on bluesky@majnuna.com MAJNOUNA.
- 2:40:03I'm on Instagram at Jou majnuna JOUMAJNOUNA.
- 2:40:10Given you are so tired, well done.
- 2:40:14And also keep an eye out all right for the continuing series
- 2:40:18of Gallifrey interviews. All right, Miles Richardson
- 2:40:22coming this Sunday. And last but never, never leads
- 2:40:27the man who is creating the spectacular artwork for the new
- 2:40:32Hamster Book Club. Dad, Hello.
- 2:40:37Yeah, I'm on the Hamster Book Club, one of the many groups on
- 2:40:41there. I'm on that reasonably
- 2:40:43regularly, and that's pretty much me podcast wise.
- 2:40:48But I can be found lurking, loitering about on, on most
- 2:40:55social media platforms. And it could be some variation
- 2:40:58of Devon Dan or whatever, something like that.
- 2:41:01I don't know exactly what they are, but yeah, yeah, come and
- 2:41:04check, check me out. Yeah.
- 2:41:07Because there'd be some, there'd be some artwork appearing within
- 2:41:11the next month. Yeah.
- 2:41:12It's. Gorgeous.
- 2:41:13Well, everybody, thank you so much for coming on and
- 2:41:16celebrating this wonderful era of Doctor Who, this fantastic
- 2:41:20actor, and this terrific incarnation of the Doctor.
- 2:41:24I mean, we've been extremely positive, except for those
- 2:41:27idiots who left all the comments really mean and ruined our
- 2:41:32episode for us. Don't you worry, I can still
- 2:41:34edit some of them out. I think we should sort of end
- 2:41:38the episode. We'll go into the music with us
- 2:41:40all doing a Peter Capaldi Dr. quote, shall we?
- 2:41:44Right, Fraser, you go first. I'll go last.
- 2:41:48Oh, for God's sakes. All right, I'll go first.
- 2:41:52It's a a hybrid Dan. My mind has gone blank.
- 2:42:00That's not the quote. You've got three bloody seasons
- 2:42:03to quote from. I know, I know, but I don't
- 2:42:06remember stuff like that. Mark.
- 2:42:10I just like punching about on a big plane.
- 2:42:15Jamana, can you do us as convincing of Peter Capaldi?
- 2:42:19Oh, I can do the impersonation, but I can I can do the quote.
- 2:42:22Yeah, your hips are fine. You're a bit like a man.
- 2:42:27And frighter, see us out. Well, I won't do the impression,
- 2:42:32but I will say never be cruel, never be cowardly, and never
- 2:42:36ever eat pears. Remember, hate is always foolish
- 2:42:41and love is always wise. Always try to be nice, but never
- 2:42:45fail to be kind. Laugh hard.
- 2:42:49Oh. God, you're still going, Jesus.
- 2:42:52Be kind, hamster, I let you go. That was the longest dramatic
- 2:42:59pause in history. I'll cut it there.
- 2:43:40The. The.
