- 0:00Speaker 1: Hey, rock As it's color duel Eli is.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Hey, you doing car You're good to speak to you tonight.
- 0:07Speaker 1: I'm good man, I'm excited.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I bet you. The reason you are excited is because today,
- 0:13Speaker 2: during the twentieth you're dropping your new album. There's a
- 0:16Speaker 2: duel in town. So how you feel has been a
- 0:19Speaker 2: bit of a long campaign. How are you feeling it?
- 0:21Speaker 3: Oh man, this is so exciting to have this album
- 0:25Speaker 3: out now.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Look, I've been hanging on to these songs for a
- 0:27Speaker 1: little while, you know, almost two years. It sounds like
- 0:33Speaker 1: a long time to do.
- 0:35Speaker 3: An album, but it actually only took I figured out
- 0:38Speaker 3: it only took about fourteen days.
- 0:39Speaker 1: To actually record this whole album.
- 0:42Speaker 3: But it was just a couple of trips backwards and
- 0:44Speaker 3: forwards to Brisbane to get it done in between touring
- 0:47Speaker 3: the two tours we did to Japan and yeah, now
- 0:51Speaker 3: it's finally out. Obviously we you know, released a few singles,
- 0:55Speaker 3: but yeah, to share the whole album is just unreal.
- 1:00Speaker 2: I mention is now, tell us a bit more about
- 1:01Speaker 2: the album from musical point of view, like dive into
- 1:03Speaker 2: it for us, tell us what you were going for?
- 1:05Speaker 3: Look, you know, I definitely wanted to write like an
- 1:09Speaker 3: album with you know, all the good pop and the rock,
- 1:12Speaker 3: and but you know what, I just kind of I
- 1:15Speaker 3: am me and I do write sad songs. I've had,
- 1:19Speaker 3: you know, a lot of life experience and that's where
- 1:22Speaker 3: these songs come from, you know, And I just really
- 1:25Speaker 3: stayed true to myself. It's got a bit of everything
- 1:29Speaker 3: for everyone, I think, because I don't write as a
- 1:32Speaker 3: box artist like rock only. You know, there's there's the
- 1:35Speaker 3: elements of the pop, there's the elements of electronic. You know,
- 1:39Speaker 3: it's melodic, it's it's hard hitting, it's upbeat, it's it's
- 1:43Speaker 3: sad as you know what I mean. So there's there's
- 1:46Speaker 3: highs and lows in here, and it's just like it's
- 1:49Speaker 3: a yeah, it's pretty magic man. It's it's got something
- 1:52Speaker 3: for everyone in there.
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah. Now I've talked today. You've released the singles Birds, Sorry,
- 1:57Speaker 2: It in the Dark. So are they a good sony
- 1:59Speaker 2: for presentation of what to expect you? Are they just
- 2:01Speaker 2: just a little teaser?
- 2:03Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 2:04Speaker 3: I mean I think those songs kind of wrap it
- 2:07Speaker 3: up as well. Like I mean, you go from sad
- 2:09Speaker 3: Girl to burn is like a huge rock ballad, and
- 2:13Speaker 3: then you've got in the Dark, you know, which is
- 2:15Speaker 3: this like kind of dark electronic kind of just you know,
- 2:20Speaker 3: it's a ride that one itself, it's really emotional. And
- 2:24Speaker 3: then you've got other side, which is just a banger,
- 2:27Speaker 3: you know. So it really I think it explains itself
- 2:31Speaker 3: that that's the kind of stuff you're going to get
- 2:33Speaker 3: in this album. It's it's a little bit of everything,
- 2:36Speaker 3: and I just love you know, mixing things up and
- 2:41Speaker 3: you know, keeping it all in there.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Do you have a signature sound?
- 2:44Speaker 3: So, I mean it doesn't you know, it's going to
- 2:47Speaker 3: be mew.
- 2:50Speaker 2: You're actually speaking about those signature down I guess. But
- 2:53Speaker 2: how have you developed that over the years to get
- 2:54Speaker 2: to this point.
- 2:56Speaker 3: Staying true, just just being me, not trying to be
- 3:00Speaker 3: like other people, and not trying to write songs to
- 3:03Speaker 3: please people. I'm just writing for myself. And you know,
- 3:07Speaker 3: a lot of a lot of this stuff as well.
- 3:09Speaker 3: You know, it has that kind of that country rock.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And when I say country rock, when you go to
- 3:15Speaker 3: like you know, places like Nashville and stuff, you're hearing
- 3:17Speaker 3: these like big rocks like country songs, but they sound rock.
- 3:21Speaker 3: And you know, I grew up around country music, and
- 3:23Speaker 3: I guess like that country sound kind of does come
- 3:25Speaker 3: through that rock kind of sound. You know, they have
- 3:28Speaker 3: that element and that's just you know, me being me
- 3:31Speaker 3: and as a kid and just you know, so I
- 3:35Speaker 3: guess that's what my soul sounds like. You know, it's
- 3:38Speaker 3: it's just me, that's who I am.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I just sort of touched on this a bit before.
- 3:43Speaker 2: But you actually wrote most of the album up here
- 3:45Speaker 2: in Brisbane, didn't you.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you know, I write a lot of the
- 3:48Speaker 3: songs here in my bathroom because there's great acoustics, so
- 3:51Speaker 3: that you know, most of these songs come from the
- 3:54Speaker 3: shower of the bathroom. This is where they start and
- 3:57Speaker 3: still will actually get like, you know, a little here
- 4:00Speaker 3: and there, like in the bathroom with the nice acoustics.
- 4:02Speaker 3: I was like, what do you think of this one?
- 4:04Speaker 1: Stuart?
- 4:04Speaker 3: You know, I sent him in and then we build
- 4:06Speaker 3: a track. Juel in Town was the most special because.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You know, I knew I had the nine.
- 4:14Speaker 3: Songs that were ready to go for the album and
- 4:17Speaker 3: this one particular song was unwritten.
- 4:20Speaker 1: But I knew I had one.
- 4:22Speaker 3: More story to tell and it had to be this
- 4:25Speaker 3: and it was the most important. And Stewart actually said
- 4:28Speaker 3: to me Carlia, do you want to send over a demo.
- 4:30Speaker 1: I don't have a demo yet.
- 4:31Speaker 2: Night.
- 4:31Speaker 3: I didn't even know how to play whatever the malady
- 4:36Speaker 3: I was trying to create or anything. And I said
- 4:38Speaker 3: to him, you know what, I'm just going to sing
- 4:39Speaker 3: it to you when I get there. And he was like, okay,
- 4:41Speaker 3: this would be fun because I.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Had, you know, what I had was my life.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Growing up and growing up around music and being so
- 4:50Speaker 3: inspired by my late grandfather and all the things he
- 4:52Speaker 3: told me. I was like, there's an unwritten song here.
- 4:55Speaker 3: I just need to to get to Brisbane and then
- 5:00Speaker 3: I can, you know, start creating that music that I
- 5:03Speaker 3: can hear in my head, you know, and then I
- 5:06Speaker 3: write the song.
- 5:07Speaker 1: So it actually went like.
- 5:11Speaker 3: I sang the idea to Stewart and I didn't even
- 5:13Speaker 3: have my lines in play check because I wasn't sure
- 5:16Speaker 3: how it would fit it. I had to hear the
- 5:17Speaker 3: bed for it to lay in, you know, and we
- 5:21Speaker 3: started building this mega track just from the.
- 5:24Speaker 1: Melody, you know, just me singing along and stuff.
- 5:26Speaker 3: And then Stuart was building this track me so I
- 5:29Speaker 3: will come up in the morning and you know, we'll
- 5:30Speaker 3: start on the vocals and that and I said, Okay,
- 5:32Speaker 3: I'm gonna go write the song. And I stayed up
- 5:34Speaker 3: until four am, and I wrote the song. I had
- 5:36Speaker 3: an app and in the morning we went up to
- 5:38Speaker 3: the studio. I smashed the fucking song out.
- 5:40Speaker 1: And that's how it, you know. I just had this
- 5:43Speaker 1: story they were all ready to tell.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And and my pop used to always say to me
- 5:47Speaker 3: before any show.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I'd always really, he'd say, let them.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Know there's a jewel in town vibe and I say, oh, right, Pop,
- 5:53Speaker 3: And that was just our thing, you know. And and
- 5:56Speaker 3: this is my first album I've done without him and
- 5:59Speaker 3: all these songs, and he's passed and it just meant
- 6:02Speaker 3: the world. And I just knew. I knew when I
- 6:05Speaker 3: wrote the song that would be the title track for
- 6:07Speaker 3: the album.
- 6:09Speaker 2: Yeah, that's beautiful. That's beautiful. Now. You just got back
- 6:12Speaker 2: from a tour of Japan as well, So how did
- 6:15Speaker 2: that go?
- 6:16Speaker 1: Oh? That was amazing? It was so good.
- 6:19Speaker 3: We played a different venue this time in Osaka, which
- 6:23Speaker 3: it had the longest name.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I still can't say it, but that was so cool
- 6:26Speaker 1: to like, do it? That is it? Crimson?
- 6:30Speaker 2: What a great venue, isn't It's my favorite place? And
- 6:34Speaker 2: I was job walking there and they let the girl
- 6:36Speaker 2: behind the barge and he puts in the freezer for
- 6:38Speaker 2: me and.
- 6:42Speaker 1: The bar manager there was just what.
- 6:44Speaker 3: We absolutely loved him, so yeah, it was amazing. We
- 6:49Speaker 3: ended up in Forkiyama and that was meant to be
- 6:52Speaker 3: a few days off, but we ended up playing there
- 6:54Speaker 3: at Live Mayhem.
- 6:55Speaker 1: Yeah, guys it at that venue.
- 6:57Speaker 3: They really helped us on the last tour and we
- 7:00Speaker 3: just wanted to go back and hang out and they said,
- 7:01Speaker 3: no way, You're not coming here without doing a show.
- 7:03Speaker 1: So uh. They actually we got their band together.
- 7:07Speaker 3: And yeah, we did a show and it was really
- 7:10Speaker 3: cool because we got to do, you know, new songs
- 7:13Speaker 3: for the album and we did some covers. It was
- 7:15Speaker 3: just like a big party. G I think our step
- 7:17Speaker 3: went for like just over an hour. It was so
- 7:19Speaker 3: much fun. But such a beautiful place. The people are beautiful.
- 7:23Speaker 3: I absolutely love Japan.
- 7:25Speaker 2: You did, and you've been focusing on Japan a bit lately,
- 7:28Speaker 2: But I've also previously towed the US playing at which
- 7:31Speaker 2: the Go Go and vipery, which most people want to
- 7:33Speaker 2: do at least once in their life, but you play
- 7:35Speaker 2: their head back or are you sort of more focusing
- 7:37Speaker 2: on this side of the world for now.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Yeah, you know what kind just wherever music takes me,
- 7:43Speaker 3: you know, if it's calling out to me over there,
- 7:45Speaker 3: that's where I'm going to go. Japan has just been unreal,
- 7:48Speaker 3: and you know that that's where.
- 7:50Speaker 1: The streaming's coming from, that's where the people are, you know.
- 7:53Speaker 3: Looking and we just made this connection over there that's
- 7:56Speaker 3: like just it's unbreakable and it's nothing like I've ever had,
- 7:59Speaker 3: so you know, it would be stupid not to spend
- 8:03Speaker 3: a lot of time there. And the bands we've met
- 8:07Speaker 3: are just wild, Like I just can't believe how amazing
- 8:12Speaker 3: it is over there. But I'm definitely looking at going
- 8:14Speaker 3: back to the US this year, which I haven't announced yet,
- 8:18Speaker 3: but I will.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Be going back there and I will be heading back
- 8:22Speaker 1: to Japan.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Nice. Now closer to home, You've got a couple of
- 8:27Speaker 2: album launch shows this weekend too. You got one tonight
- 8:30Speaker 2: live and intimate Birthday album launch and then tomorrow night
- 8:32Speaker 2: you got the live and loud album launch, So runners
- 8:35Speaker 2: through both of them. Men.
- 8:36Speaker 3: So you know this comes from my pop started the
- 8:40Speaker 3: country music festivals in Australia and.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, I need my own
- 8:43Speaker 1: there's a duel in Town Festival.
- 8:45Speaker 3: There's so much to this album and it's so special
- 8:47Speaker 3: that I just can't deliver it in one night. So
- 8:50Speaker 3: you know, our acoustics show that I do, it's pretty special.
- 8:54Speaker 3: It's pretty healing, and we all tend to cry, and
- 8:56Speaker 3: it's just on another level. And I was like, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 3: there's something about going to a gig fist pumping and
- 9:01Speaker 3: you know, the yellown and slam and beers and shots,
- 9:04Speaker 3: but there's something about like just being live and intimate
- 9:08Speaker 3: and you know, having no shoes on, you know, that
- 9:10Speaker 3: grounding energy, sitting around seeing sad songs, maybe people pry
- 9:14Speaker 3: and something. Yeah, and it's it's my birthday as well,
- 9:22Speaker 3: and I wanted to do something really special, and our
- 9:24Speaker 3: acoustic show is really special, and I wanted to, you know,
- 9:28Speaker 3: really let people know who I am and strip it
- 9:31Speaker 3: back and do some of the songs, you know, the
- 9:34Speaker 3: way we need to deliver them.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And then on the Saturday night.
- 9:38Speaker 3: We're gonna go for live and loud in your phace,
- 9:41Speaker 3: hard rock as you know, me all over the stage.
- 9:46Speaker 2: Where it did, I didn't see where it was.
- 9:48Speaker 1: We're having it at Scotty's Garage.
- 9:50Speaker 2: O beautiful, perfect place.
- 9:52Speaker 4: What a place and uh and yeah we we do
- 9:55Speaker 4: have some more shows to announce as well, which I
- 10:00Speaker 4: can do it now that the album's out.
- 10:03Speaker 3: So we also have a barbecue on Sunday, which is cool.
- 10:08Speaker 3: We're just going to hang out back at Scotty Scara,
- 10:10Speaker 3: so it's actually a three day festival surprise.
- 10:14Speaker 1: The Sunday we're having a barbecue.
- 10:15Speaker 3: We're going to have an acoustic gem out of the back.
- 10:17Speaker 3: There's another muso there. I'll get up, do some covers,
- 10:20Speaker 3: just a good gem Q and I take some photos,
- 10:22Speaker 3: thank everyone and hang out.
- 10:25Speaker 2: Sounds like a perfect weekend. Yeah. Nice. Now before we
- 10:29Speaker 2: let you go, Carly, I'm not sure if I put
- 10:31Speaker 2: you through this or not yet, but I've got a
- 10:33Speaker 2: new segment I've started called photo Bob, So basically i'll
- 10:35Speaker 2: troll on your social media before we have a chat.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Oh god, what we were about?
- 10:41Speaker 1: So all.
- 10:42Speaker 2: I've heard of an expression putting a gun to someone's
- 10:44Speaker 2: head before, but I've never seen it take in quite
- 10:46Speaker 2: so literally.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Ah, that's my friend Marius.
- 10:51Speaker 3: This was at one of my old work parties. I
- 10:54Speaker 3: was like nineteen twenties, so we all dressed up. I
- 10:58Speaker 3: actually won the best dressed that night. So yeah, it
- 11:02Speaker 3: was like the gangster kind of nineteen twenties party.
- 11:05Speaker 1: It was a lot of fun.
- 11:07Speaker 2: It looks like he's quite happy about putting now this
- 11:14Speaker 2: next one. I don't know what's going on here, but
- 11:16Speaker 2: there's got to be a story behind it.
- 11:19Speaker 1: Oh my god.
- 11:20Speaker 3: So this, you know, I was the first Australian artist
- 11:22Speaker 3: to ever play the Swon Festival.
- 11:26Speaker 1: Here in Melbourne, and.
- 11:28Speaker 3: I actually got invited to play and they actually had
- 11:31Speaker 3: like models and everything and it was it was it
- 11:35Speaker 3: was so cool because we were playing like Sid and Nancy.
- 11:40Speaker 1: And they were like girls modeling.
- 11:42Speaker 3: And it was just like it was in the town
- 11:46Speaker 3: Hall in Clayton, so it was really huge venue. But yeah,
- 11:49Speaker 3: we played like this World Peace festival and there was yeah,
- 11:52Speaker 3: all of these different artists and it was wild.
- 11:56Speaker 1: It was crazy. But yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Yeah, and after that then we got invited to another
- 12:03Speaker 3: World Peace festival that I had in Chile, but obviously
- 12:05Speaker 3: we couldn't go it because it was short notice. But
- 12:08Speaker 3: I was the first Australian artists play that's so On
- 12:10Speaker 3: music festival, so that was pretty cool and it just
- 12:13Speaker 3: you know, really showed that music brings people together. It
- 12:15Speaker 3: doesn't matter what culture, what your background is anything. Music
- 12:19Speaker 3: is music and it brings everyone together and that's what
- 12:21Speaker 3: makes it so special.
- 12:23Speaker 2: Well said carl Well said. Now there's a Jewelings out
- 12:27Speaker 2: is out today. It is as Carlie says it said,
- 12:29Speaker 2: it covers a lot of ranges the album. It's not
- 12:31Speaker 2: just rock, it's not just top this stuff. It's just
- 12:33Speaker 2: it's a fucking good album. So where do people get
- 12:36Speaker 2: a hold of it and find out more about what
- 12:37Speaker 2: Carlie Jewel Bands are up to?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Well, you know what, you can head to the big Cartel.
- 12:41Speaker 3: You can buy the album there, you can stream it,
- 12:44Speaker 3: save it, share it, make reels to tag me in it,
- 12:48Speaker 3: help me get it out. Catch us at a gig
- 12:51Speaker 3: in Melbourne, catch us at a gig in Japan. We're
- 12:55Speaker 3: on all the social media's head to X music as well.
- 12:58Speaker 3: You'll see myself and all the other X me the
- 13:00Speaker 3: artists which we you know often put shows together. And honestly,
- 13:04Speaker 3: I can't thank him and everyone EX Music enough for
- 13:06Speaker 3: everything I've done.
- 13:07Speaker 1: You Chris as.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Well, you know a lot of people don't know, but
- 13:11Speaker 3: you actually helped me out in Brisbane as I was
- 13:13Speaker 3: going there backwards and forwards to record the album, and
- 13:16Speaker 3: you got to kind of watch these big tracks unfold,
- 13:18Speaker 3: and I was like, Chris Quick, sneak in and have
- 13:20Speaker 3: a listen to this. So to share that journey with
- 13:22Speaker 3: you guys, you know, I really appreciate it.
- 13:24Speaker 1: It's an absolute honor.
- 13:26Speaker 2: My mother's all mine. Sweet, Thanks very much for best
- 13:28Speaker 2: of luck with it all, and happy birthday. I'm sorry
- 13:31Speaker 2: I can't beat here this weekend. I've got the bloody
- 13:32Speaker 2: kid just like everything.
- 13:33Speaker 1: Ah, that's okay, we'll be back up that way.
