- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. When the ruler of the feast had
- 0:04Speaker 1: tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not
- 0:08Speaker 1: whence it was, but the servants which drew the water knew,
- 0:12Speaker 1: the governor of the feast called the bridegroom. John 2.9
- 0:18Speaker 1: Dear Heavenly Father, give me the boldness, like the men
- 0:21Speaker 1: in today's reading, to leave my comfort and all I
- 0:25Speaker 1: know to follow the plan and purposes of God. As
- 0:30Speaker 1: I focus on Jesus, I will be led by His Spirit.
- 0:36Speaker 1: I will not allow anyone around me to place doubt
- 0:38Speaker 1: in my heart that you are the Messiah, the Chosen One,
- 0:42Speaker 1: to change my life, Jesus. Like your life, Jesus, people
- 0:48Speaker 1: may doubt who you've called me to be because of
- 0:52Speaker 1: how and where I was raised. But I will ignore
- 0:55Speaker 1: the doubters because great things come from obscure places. Quicken
- 1:02Speaker 1: my heart so that I will know the time and
- 1:05Speaker 1: place to use the gifts you've given me. Bless me
- 1:10Speaker 1: with divine obedience so I may walk in the wake
- 1:15Speaker 1: of your miracles and point people to your saving grace.
- 1:21Speaker 1: I declare that this is the season of miracles. I
- 1:25Speaker 1: declare that this is the season of new beginnings. In Jesus' name. Amen.

- 2:28Speaker 3: The First Miracle In our last story, the heavens were
- 2:32Speaker 3: opened up as John baptized Jesus. The signaling of Jesus'
- 2:37Speaker 3: earthly ministry had begun, and all of history was about
- 2:40Speaker 3: to be shaped forever. Jesus was led by the Spirit
- 2:44Speaker 3: into the wilderness, where he was tempted by Satan. Yet
- 2:48Speaker 3: Jesus came out victorious and proved his power over sin
- 2:52Speaker 3: and temptation. Now we look at Jesus' ministry taking flight.
- 2:57Speaker 3: He calls men to his side and shows them why
- 2:59Speaker 3: he is worthy of following. He attends a wedding with
- 3:02Speaker 3: his disciples and mother and shows that even the Son
- 3:06Speaker 3: of God obeys his mother when asked. Inspired by the Gospels.
- 3:13Speaker 4: The last time we were together, we heard how John
- 3:15Speaker 4: the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus and how he
- 3:18Speaker 4: baptized Christ in the presence of a multitude of people.
- 3:23Speaker 4: We heard God speak and declare that Jesus is his son.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Following that incredible event, supernatural indeed, Jesus went into the
- 3:31Speaker 4: wilderness where he endured and overcame temptation. And now he
- 3:36Speaker 4: is ready to begin his earthly ministry. Today, we'll hear
- 3:40Speaker 4: about the men Jesus called to walk with him for
- 3:43Speaker 4: his time on earth. These 12 men from different backgrounds,
- 3:47Speaker 4: none of them obvious choices, but all called by God.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Then we'll see as Jesus performs the first of many
- 3:55Speaker 4: miracles at the wedding, the wedding feast at Cana. So
- 3:59Speaker 4: let's listen to God's Word.
- 4:02Speaker 3: John was sitting on the shore of the Sea of Galilee.
- 4:05Speaker 3: The gentle waves rose with grace. Behind him were two
- 4:09Speaker 3: of his followers. They spoke of the Lord, His coming,
- 4:13Speaker 3: and the future of mankind. As they were speaking, John
- 4:16Speaker 3: caught a glimpse of Jesus passing by. John nudged both
- 4:20Speaker 3: of his disciples and said, You see that man over there?
- 4:23Speaker 3: The two of them looked at Jesus and nodded. That
- 4:27Speaker 3: is the Lamb of God, the reason I am here.
- 4:31Speaker 3: John's heart skipped a few beats in his chest, and
- 4:33Speaker 3: his throat began to choke up with tears. He is
- 4:37Speaker 3: the one you should follow. The disciples looked at John intensely,
- 4:41Speaker 3: seeing that he truly believed that man to be the Messiah.
- 4:44Speaker 3: So they left John's side and began to follow Jesus.
- 4:50Speaker 3: Jesus was walking by the shore, feeling the soft breeze
- 4:53Speaker 3: on his face. He watched the fishermen tend to their
- 4:56Speaker 3: nets and boats methodically. Jesus could hear the slight shift
- 5:00Speaker 3: of sand behind him. He looked back and saw two
- 5:03Speaker 3: men following him. He smiled. What are you seeking, my friends?
- 5:08Speaker 3: he asked. The two men stopped, a little embarrassed that
- 5:12Speaker 3: they did not just introduce themselves to Jesus in the
- 5:14Speaker 3: first place. We wish to remain with you, they said.
- 5:19Speaker 3: Jesus nodded warmly and they followed him. The one who
- 5:23Speaker 3: remained with Jesus was Andrew. He listened to Jesus speak.
- 5:27Speaker 3: His words were like fire flowing from the earth. Andrew
- 5:31Speaker 3: eventually brought Jesus to his brother Simon, a fisherman who
- 5:35Speaker 3: was tending to his boat. Simon, he said, we have
- 5:38Speaker 3: found him. We have found the Messiah. Simon was a
- 5:43Speaker 3: loud and boisterous fellow. He had a fighter's spirit and
- 5:46Speaker 3: a sailor's tongue. He looked at Jesus, sizing him up
- 5:50Speaker 3: to judge whether he was a man worth following. He
- 5:53Speaker 3: was not quite sure yet. Jesus looked at Simon. He
- 5:57Speaker 3: could see all of who he was, inside and out.
- 6:00Speaker 3: He could see the pain in his heart and the
- 6:02Speaker 3: fire in his belly. Jesus laughed and smiled. Ah, Simon,
- 6:07Speaker 3: son of John, you will no longer be called Simon.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Now you will be called Peter the Rock. Curious as
- 6:15Speaker 3: to what Jesus meant, Peter followed him. The next day,
- 6:19Speaker 3: Jesus decided to go further into the city of Galilee.
- 6:22Speaker 3: Crowds of people came in and out of the gates.
- 6:25Speaker 3: As John continued to preach of Jesus' importance, many of
- 6:29Speaker 3: his followers began to follow Jesus. The sea of faces
- 6:32Speaker 3: rose like waves, but Jesus was intent on finding his
- 6:36Speaker 3: chosen men. He saw a man named Philip walking by
- 6:40Speaker 3: the road. Philip, Jesus shouted. Philip was alarmed and looked over.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Jesus held his shoulders, looked him in the eyes, and said,
- 6:49Speaker 3: Follow me, Philip. The reason Philip followed is still unknown.
- 6:54Speaker 3: Perhaps it was the way Jesus spoke his name. Perhaps
- 6:57Speaker 3: it was the way he looked him in the eye.
- 6:59Speaker 3: Whatever it was, It made Philip undoubtedly devoted. Later that day,
- 7:04Speaker 3: Philip grabbed his friend Nathanael and said, We have found him,
- 7:08Speaker 3: the one whom Moses spoke of, the Messiah. He is
- 7:12Speaker 3: Jesus of Nazareth. Nathanael scoffed. His laughter came from his belly. Nazareth,
- 7:18Speaker 3: he asked. Can anything good come out of Nazareth? That
- 7:22Speaker 3: place is a dump filled with unsavory people. Philip shrugged.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Come and see for yourself, he said. So the two
- 7:30Speaker 3: of them walked to where Jesus was sitting. As he
- 7:33Speaker 3: was approaching, Jesus sat up and said, Ah, Nathanael, a
- 7:37Speaker 3: true Israelite, a man in whom there is no corruption.
- 7:42Speaker 3: Nathanael's eyes widened. How do you know who I am?
- 7:45Speaker 2: He asked.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Jesus walked closer. It was just the two of them.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I know who you are, Nathanael. Even before Philip called you,
- 7:54Speaker 3: I was with you under the fig tree. I heard you.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Nathaniel's heart broke like a dam when he heard those words.
- 8:01Speaker 3: That was a secret time he had between him and
- 8:04Speaker 3: the Lord. Underneath the fig tree is where he bore
- 8:07Speaker 3: his soul to God. If Jesus had heard him, it
- 8:10Speaker 3: could only mean one thing. He was God himself. Nathaniel
- 8:15Speaker 3: fell to his knees. Truly, you are the Son of God,
- 8:20Speaker 3: he said, putting his hands over his face. Jesus gave
- 8:24Speaker 3: a gentle laugh and said, You say all this because
- 8:27Speaker 3: I saw you under the fig tree? He helped him
- 8:30Speaker 3: up to his feet. Trust me, Nathaniel, you will see
- 8:33Speaker 3: greater things than that. You will see heaven opened and
- 8:36Speaker 3: the blessings of God poured out. A few days later,
- 8:40Speaker 3: Jesus and some of his followers were attending a wedding
- 8:43Speaker 3: in Cana. Hundreds of people were in attendance, including Jesus' mother, Mary. Music, food,
- 8:50Speaker 3: and wine flowed as people enjoyed the union of their friends.
- 8:54Speaker 3: It was a joyous occasion. until the hosts ran out
- 8:57Speaker 3: of wine too early. Jesus was sitting at a table
- 9:00Speaker 3: with a few of his followers when he saw his
- 9:03Speaker 3: mother approaching.' They are out of wine,' Mary whispered to Jesus.
- 9:08Speaker 3: Jesus smiled at his mother. He loved her deeply and
- 9:11Speaker 3: knew exactly why she had come to him with this matter.'
- 9:13Speaker 3: You know my hour has not yet come,' Jesus said.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Mary paid no attention to her son's answer. As only
- 9:21Speaker 3: a mother could, she gathered a few of the servants
- 9:23Speaker 3: and brought them to Jesus. Do what my son tells
- 9:27Speaker 3: you to do. She gave Jesus a look and then
- 9:30Speaker 3: left to go reassure the hosts that there would be
- 9:32Speaker 3: more wine soon. Jesus chuckled and gestured to the servants,
- 9:37Speaker 3: Fill up the six stone water jars to the top
- 9:40Speaker 3: with water. So the servants brought the massive jars to
- 9:43Speaker 3: the well. They filled them to the brim and brought
- 9:46Speaker 3: them back to Jesus. Then he gestured for the water
- 9:49Speaker 3: to be brought to the hosts. Go and pour the
- 9:52Speaker 3: water into their cups. The servants were confused at Jesus' orders,
- 9:56Speaker 3: but did not question him. They carried the jugs of
- 9:59Speaker 3: water to the host. and poured it into his cup.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Out from the jugs came new wine. The host had
- 10:05Speaker 3: no clue that the jars were once filled with water,
- 10:08Speaker 3: but the servants did. They looked back at Jesus smiling.
- 10:12Speaker 3: The disciples who were beside him awed at the miracle.
- 10:16Speaker 3: All were surprised and amazed. All except Mary.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Today we learn how John the Baptist sees Jesus once
- 10:27Speaker 4: again and once more proclaim that the Lord is the
- 10:30Speaker 4: Lamb of God and that his disciples and all others
- 10:34Speaker 4: should follow him. And so two men left John the
- 10:37Speaker 4: Baptist and they began to follow Jesus. One of them
- 10:40Speaker 4: was Andrew, who soon called his brother Simon. Simon was
- 10:45Speaker 4: no shrinking violet, and he wasn't afraid to speak his mind.
- 10:48Speaker 4: Jesus knew Simon inside and out from the moment they met,
- 10:52Speaker 4: and he knew that he would serve a very special purpose.
- 10:56Speaker 4: So Jesus gave him a new name. Simon's name is
- 11:00Speaker 4: now The Rock, or Peter. It was an aspirational name,
- 11:05Speaker 4: as Simon still had much to learn and to grow
- 11:07Speaker 4: before he would become the stable, steady rock, the great apostle.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Jesus went to Galilee, and as John continued to point
- 11:15Speaker 4: people to the true Messiah, more and more people began
- 11:19Speaker 4: to follow Jesus. But not all followers were to be disciples.
- 11:24Speaker 4: Jesus went about hand-picking the men, selecting them who would
- 11:27Speaker 4: be his inner circle, the ones who would model their
- 11:30Speaker 4: lives after Jesus, their rabbi. You might think that Jesus
- 11:34Speaker 4: would have picked the best and the brightest on earth,
- 11:37Speaker 4: the most learned theological minds, someone from the priestly caste,
- 11:41Speaker 4: those who knew the law inside and out. But that's
- 11:44Speaker 4: not what Jesus did. The men he picked were the
- 11:47Speaker 4: least likely of candidates in so many ways. Certainly from
- 11:50Speaker 4: a human perspective, you wouldn't have chosen these men. But
- 11:54Speaker 4: God's ways are much higher than our ways. He saw
- 11:58Speaker 4: in them, as he sees in us, potential. What others
- 12:02Speaker 4: don't see, God sees. But more importantly— When God worked
- 12:06Speaker 4: through them despite their flaws and weaknesses, he was glorified.
- 12:10Speaker 4: It's the same with us today. Not many mighty or
- 12:14Speaker 4: not many noble are called according to the scripture. And
- 12:17Speaker 4: God's power, the presence of Jesus, is made perfect in
- 12:20Speaker 4: our weakness. Our failures become a platform for Jesus to work.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Jesus knew exactly how to speak to each man that
- 12:29Speaker 4: he called. And they all saw something in Jesus that
- 12:33Speaker 4: was different, something amazing, something Special, a man worth following,
- 12:38Speaker 4: so that they dropped what they were doing, their careers,
- 12:40Speaker 4: their future, and they gave it all to Jesus. Listen
- 12:43Speaker 4: to what Nathanael, one of these men chosen by Christ,
- 12:47Speaker 4: says in John 1 49. Nathanael answered him, Rabbi, you
- 12:52Speaker 4: are the son of God. You are the king of Israel.
- 12:55Speaker 4: This was just the beginning. Not all of these men
- 12:58Speaker 4: could comprehend at this point who Jesus was and is,
- 13:03Speaker 4: but Nathanael, he knew. This was the beginning of their journey,
- 13:07Speaker 4: and as Jesus said to Nathanael, they would witness much
- 13:11Speaker 4: greater things still. We then heard that Jesus and his
- 13:15Speaker 4: disciple and his mother attended a wedding feast in Cana.
- 13:19Speaker 4: Someone had planned poorly for the feast because they ran
- 13:22Speaker 4: out of refreshments, they ran out of wine. It would
- 13:25Speaker 4: be a huge disappointment and embarrassment if they ran out
- 13:29Speaker 4: of the wine. Mary, who from the beginning, from conception,
- 13:33Speaker 4: knew that Jesus was the chosen Messiah of God, that
- 13:36Speaker 4: he was filled with the power of God, went to
- 13:38Speaker 4: her son and asked him for help. Jesus had not
- 13:42Speaker 4: intended to perform a miracle that day, but he loved
- 13:45Speaker 4: it and he honored his mother. And so he fulfilled
- 13:48Speaker 4: her request. He asked the servant to bring jars and
- 13:52Speaker 4: fill them with water, huge jars. Then the jars were
- 13:55Speaker 4: taken to the host to pour into cups. And amazingly,
- 13:58Speaker 4: when they poured out of the jars What flowed was
- 14:01Speaker 4: the best wine, far better than the guests had been
- 14:03Speaker 4: served earlier. The servants were amazed. Everyone celebrated. The disciples
- 14:10Speaker 4: who witnessed the miracle began to see what Jesus could do.
- 14:14Speaker 4: They began to believe more and more, and they began
- 14:17Speaker 4: following Christ closer and closer. They know now that He
- 14:22Speaker 4: is the one that the Father has sent to be
- 14:24Speaker 4: the Savior of the world, and more miracles, greater miracles,
- 14:28Speaker 4: were yet to come. Dear God, thank you for Jesus.
- 14:33Speaker 4: Thank you for the power of his presence in our lives.
- 14:36Speaker 4: Thank you that even in the simple things, like a
- 14:39Speaker 4: wedding feast, that you bring joy and laughter and happiness
- 14:43Speaker 4: and celebration. We thank you, Jesus, for your joy. And
- 14:47Speaker 4: we thank you that we can live in the abundance
- 14:50Speaker 4: of your life every single day. And we pray this
- 14:53Speaker 4: in your name. Amen. Thank you for listening to today's
