- 0:04Good morning, good morning, good morning, Welcome, welcome, welcome in.
- 0:07It's time now for car talk right here on K one, the one
- 0:10you trust, nine thirty and the sun is shining. It's Thursday morning.
- 0:14I guess that means brand's in the billy brand. The light up. The
- 0:18sun is so bright on the cars. Fuck it, it's like the eclipse.
- 0:22Man, I don't have a written about it this time of year.
- 0:24As the sun comes up, we get really, oh yeah, I want
- 0:27shades on the showroom, all faces to the east, and they it's kind
- 0:32of a you don't need them for very long, no hour, so it's
- 0:36pretty. It's kind of pretty. It is, it is. It is
- 0:39a beautiful morning. Glad everybody is here with us this morning. Good morning
- 0:42friends. It's Thursday, April eleventh, and we're still celebrating our eighty third
- 0:47anniversary here in Bartlesville this month. You know, hundreds of thousands of vehicles
- 0:52later, and you know, three generations, all those miles is actually it
- 0:57started in nineteen twenty nine and Tonkawahak was the first dealership and that's ninety five
- 1:02years ago this year. So that's that's a long legacy and we're really proud
- 1:07of that and we are. As we talked about last week, we're going
- 1:11to make a donation for every vehicle we sell this month to a local charity
- 1:15of our customer's choice, one hundred dollars, and if the charity gets the
- 1:21most vote, so to speak, we'll make that two hundred and fifty dollars.
- 1:25And I know we've had gifts for organizations like Hopestone Cancer Center. I
- 1:30think they're in the lead again, which is great. And then k Live
- 1:34Bartlesville, Bartleswild Boys and Girls Club and lots of others and got some guests
- 1:41here today, Corey Williams and Sonny Lee from the Sustainability Alliance. Well,
- 1:47welcome, say hello to everybody in Bartlesville. Here, Sonny beautiful Bartlesville.
- 1:53Yeah, yeah, so I'm so great to have you here. Just introduce
- 1:57yourselves a little bit. People probably don't know about the Sustainability Alliance. It's
- 2:02been in Tulsa for quite a while now, Yeah, for twenty two years.
- 2:07We got started, and really our focus has always been about the triple
- 2:10bottom line, people, profit and planets, and that's the work that we
- 2:15do. But we're now the Sustainability Alliance and so we've really grown outside of
- 2:20Tulsa. So that's one reason we're here today. We're excited to get to
- 2:23know Bartlesville. That's great. Well, there's a lot of good stuff always
- 2:28going on in Borrowsville. It's a very rich community and full of lots of
- 2:32organizations that love to support things, and you know, a lot along a
- 2:37lot of great organizations that work in that area like sutt Navy and Research Center
- 2:43and then Nature Conservancy's great Prairie Preserve over in Osage Camp. We're actually going
- 2:47to be going over to will Rock here. It's just a little while to
- 2:51speak with Kevin over there at woll Rock. So yeah, a lot of
- 2:53beautiful natural places that kind of dovetail nicely with what we do. Yeah,
- 3:00that's right, And so what else you do? Tell us? What is
- 3:04I mean? You mentioned the three pillars there, right, How doing you
- 3:07put that into action? Of course? Yeah, so again, you know,
- 3:12the Sustainability Alliance are really about kind of providing those that education resources and
- 3:16tools to help individuals and businesses and communities along kind of navigating what it means
- 3:23to be sustainable or that triple bottom line of people, profit and planet.
- 3:27So for us, like people would be for the individual, for the family,
- 3:30the community within their community. It also be health and wellness and mental
- 3:36and physical health of being fit in those buckets. Profit of course is at
- 3:39bottom line savings for family or businesses doing well and healthy and a healthy economy.
- 3:46And then plan is really protecting those natural resources. And all three of
- 3:51these things can't be in silos. They have to kind of be interconnected,
- 3:54and so we provide all kinds of programs and tools to be able to assist
- 4:00individuals and businesses. So from a business perspective, we have a program called
- 4:03Scorecard, and actually Boy Scouts of America here in Bartlesville just joined as a
- 4:09new Scorecard member and it's helping them navigate and improve their sustainability initiatives and save
- 4:15and those kind of things. It's a lot of great stuff with recycling and
- 4:18stuff. We've had them on the show before, and I know the Boy
- 4:21Scouts have always been interested in the environment and nature and putting all that together,
- 4:28I think they now have a sustainability badge and so yeah, we're really
- 4:31looking forward to working with them, so, you know, so that's partly
- 4:35and we also have an app called terror Score, so it helps individuals kind
- 4:41of think through people, profit and planet and things that they can do for
- 4:45their family as well as their community. And so that's a free and available
- 4:50for anybody that wants to use that. Right now, we actually have an
- 4:54Earth Day Challenge since yeah, it is a couple of weeks in way,
- 4:59yes, and this one's about pollinator habitats and so you know, you don't
- 5:02think about that. There's been a lot of stuff in the news about b
- 5:04numbers declining and butterflies and you know, they're they're important to We have the
- 5:10monarchs migrate through Bartle Still. Yeah, they do in our backyard and try
- 5:15to keep the milk weed growing. Yeah, so you know, yeah,
- 5:18of course I used to work for the Nature Conservancy in Oklahoma. I was
- 5:23one of their original fundraisers, was the development coordinator there and when we did
- 5:29the Prairie Preserve campaign and what a great organization and they do so much great
- 5:34work on the private side really putting together preserves and it's it's great. We
- 5:42also, you know, I'm reminded of our going through the lead experience when
- 5:46we built our Toyota dealership. We went through a lead certification and sounds similar
- 5:53to what you guys are doing on some of your programs with Scorecard. Ye
- 5:57keeping it going though, because that was kind of a hopes we had to
- 6:00jump through and then we got done and got certified, and of course they
- 6:03have ongoing programs as well. That yeah, you know, I mean that
- 6:08is I mean a lot of companies will that first round is really kind of
- 6:13investigating who they are and what kind of resources they have and some of the
- 6:15things they've already accomplished, and then the next round is really then kind of
- 6:19accomplishing those next steps. But a big part of it is maintaining those commitments
- 6:24that you've made, and so we have all kinds of support and networks and
- 6:29education to kind of keep that keep our members kind of aware of what's going
- 6:33on in the nationally and globally, and so we do have our program described
- 6:39every year for that. And there's so much to that because as we saw
- 6:42too, I mean you mentioned the business part of it profit and you know
- 6:46a lot of our decisions were made around how do we invest this if we're
- 6:49going to do this and then get some of that back. Is like with
- 6:54geothermal heating, there we put in the building, godess, a lot of
- 6:58points in it, but it is that cost of that building versus our forward
- 7:01building is so different and it's much less expensive to operate. One of the
- 7:06things I found fascinating, and I'm new with the organization. I just joined
- 7:11a couple of months ago, and people as a TV Yes, I worked
- 7:15for for Channel eight for five years and before that I did kvo O Radio
- 7:18in Tulsa for years. But this is a new role for me as the
- 7:21development manager. But what I find fascinating was one of the first folks that
- 7:26I met with the Alliance, I was a big aerospace company and they were
- 7:30able to save a million dollars by just making some simple adjustments and it allowed
- 7:35them to then get a green kind of a grant and then they were able
- 7:40to I mean, if you think about a million dollars a year at the
- 7:42average company or a big company could save that and help the planet at the
- 7:46same time, and it's a win win for everybody. So it's it's a
- 7:48great resource. And it sounded like too you kind of were aware of the
- 7:53system's approach needed to all this because it is all interrelated, and you know,
- 7:57we see that in our business as we can for to new power trains
- 8:01and things, electric vehicles, I know. So you mentioned you drive a
- 8:03Ford Lightning. I do absolutely love. I used to drag race a sixty
- 8:09nine Camaro and I loved that car. Oh yeah, my dad and I
- 8:13built the engine and I loved it. I've never loved a car as much
- 8:16as I love that Ford Lightning. With the exception of that sixty nine Camaro,
- 8:18they're both about as fast. Was pretty quick it is. Yes,
- 8:24that's the name technically, yes, but do you know that all that all
- 8:30stuff does work together with different systems. You had to work on charging when
- 8:33you bought a view like that, and maybe and so there's just all that
- 8:37infrastructure it takes to build all that out, and so the community really needs
- 8:43to work towards those goals, is where I was going. And yeah,
- 8:46and we loved just we work with all kinds of companies. We have several
- 8:52oil and gas companies that also participate in seeing value in it and to also
- 8:56smaller nonprofits and so there are score of Our program really is built out for
- 9:01any kind of organization really wanting to improve and to connect with others that are
- 9:05doing it, because that's a big part of it is that you learn from
- 9:09each other and so you know, how did you end up doing your recycling
- 9:13or how did you end up doing your energy management and save this money.
- 9:16And so it's really about that network too that we really love to help provide
- 9:20and support in that way. Yeah, and you have event a weekly or
- 9:26so often in Tulsa and tell us about those. Yeah, we have.
- 9:28So one of our programs is called First Thursdays and that is online as well
- 9:33as in person in Tulsa. So hip what can join us for that.
- 9:37We just had one on the intersection of climate change and social inequity and that
- 9:41was put together by Deloitte's research team and it was a fabulous program. So
- 9:46it'll be online here soon for people to watch. But we'll have another one
- 9:50coming up in August there. But we also have our B to B Case
- 9:54for Sustainability series and our next one will be in May and we'll actually be
- 9:56in Oklahoma City talking to the Secretary of Energy and Environment about some of the
- 10:01things coming down from EPA and what businesses can expect, but also some of
- 10:05the great things that the state is working on when it comes to greenhouse gas
- 10:09emission reduction and some other really exciting projects. So we want to keep people
- 10:13kind of in the loop so they know what opportunities they have, but you
- 10:18know, and to just stay connected. So we'll be in Oklahoma City on
- 10:20May nine for that. And you mentioned you have a relatively new expanded approaches
- 10:26at the whole state or how does the Sustainability Alliance? Where do you work
- 10:31and how well our headquarters are in Tulsa. But our program, so our
- 10:37scorecard program is utilized in seven states and over sixteen cities, so it's being
- 10:43utilized. Yeah, And so that's one reason we're over here in Barnesville.
- 10:46We're excited to kind of get to know the community and kind of share what
- 10:50we have if it's a value for the businesses here and individuals and so.
- 10:54And one way that we're going to celebrate that is we're going to come together
- 10:58in September to celebrate it through our Recharge program. Yeah. So Recharge is
- 11:03our big fundraiser. I like to call it a shindig because it's pretty Yeah,
- 11:09we like shindigs. Yes, all right, Well this one is going
- 11:11to be fantastic. It's in September nineteenth at Brush Creek Ranch, which is
- 11:16in beautiful, beautiful part of Tulsa. It's outside and we're hoping to get
- 11:20jana Ja. I don't know if you ever watched Tea Haw jana Ja was
- 11:24the girl with a blue fiddle, and she's going to hopefully be performing for
- 11:28us there. We have music, we have food, and it's a really
- 11:31neat opportunity to come. This year's theme is roots and Boots, and so
- 11:35we want you to put on your boots and come out and network with others,
- 11:39talk, have a good time, enjoy some great food, enjoy some
- 11:41great entertainment. Sounds a fun. Yeah, I think you should come.
- 11:46All right, Well, we'll see if I can do that. It's a
- 11:48few months off, so I've got time. Yeah, there's always stuff like
- 11:52that going around in Bartlesville. Remind people we had our guests last week from
- 11:58Concern. We have a dwelve down Town fundraiser which is a great event coming
- 12:01up this next Tuesday, where we're going to get access to some apartments and
- 12:07loft situations in downtown Bartlesville. Just like in Tulsa, there's been a revitalization
- 12:13of our downtown area and an investment in a great community green over there.
- 12:18If you haven't been over and seen what's between the Community Center and Price Tower
- 12:24now there's a stage and what kind of similar to Guthrie Green that the City's
- 12:30created and it's just a lovely space. So we have a lot going on
- 12:33downtown. But this event is going to benefit Concern, which is another of
- 12:39our great nonprofits, and that is nixt Tuesday, and then we also have
- 12:45the Bartsville Civic Ballets performance of The Wizard of Oz coming up on April twentieth
- 12:50and twenty first, and also before then, the Mustang's birthday is on April.
- 13:00Yeah, we've got a new Mustang too. Have you seen that?
- 13:03Now? I'm familiar with the Machi. My cousin bought a makey and it's
- 13:07the only thing I've been in that's faster than my truck is the makis.
- 13:11It's a scary, scary, fast fast. Yeah. So the new one
- 13:15is it? Well, it's awesome. It comes in hybrid variations and Echo
- 13:20Boost and it's really it's got the extreme vehicles. It's going to have a
- 13:24bespoke almost three hundred thousand dollars Mustang GTD that we're just learning about. But
- 13:33for more run of the mill, you know, a GT or the Echo
- 13:37Boost Mustang mid thirties great car has the largest screens you've ever seen in a
- 13:41car. Two of these big situations, and it's kind of it's a great
- 13:48car to feel like you're in the Space Shuttle in other words. And you
- 13:50know, those all those the new power trains with a little bit smaller engines
- 13:56than we used to have, trying you know, squeezing more out of out
- 14:00of each little horse power and your electric vehicles. But now we have so
- 14:03many variations in the middle. But you know, from full electric to plug
- 14:09in hybrids that are you know, partially electric with a more traditional hybrid battery
- 14:13hybrids are are virtually available in any kind of vehicle. Now we'll have our
- 14:18we just announced the new twenty four Tacoma is just we're just getting our first
- 14:26ones. They're going to have a hybrid variation of that truck that we've got
- 14:31our first allocation on in a few weeks. They just sent out a release
- 14:35of the new twenty five four Runners, so it's going to have a hybrid
- 14:39version also. So it's just becoming easier and easier to save a little bit
- 14:46of money. Yeah, you know, and and you know and get those
- 14:50you know, one of Toyota's great points about electrification of vehicles. If we
- 14:54put all our resources into vehicles like the lightning, you know, all the
- 15:00the natural resources it takes. We can't really put enough vehicles out there in
- 15:05a massive amount of time. And we're going to have to have some hybrids
- 15:09and the plug in hybrids just to reduce the overall load of CO two and
- 15:13other pollutants in the environment. If you want to really impact that the quickest,
- 15:18you have to build a bridge to that future where we'll all have,
- 15:24you know, more choices, and you know, we don't really know what
- 15:26those will be because because they're still working on it. I get you know,
- 15:31so many people ask about my about the lightning, and they'll say,
- 15:33well, what happens if you want to tow something? They have the same
- 15:37towing capacity of a regular F one fifty. My husband's a numbers guy,
- 15:41and he has been kind of putting pen to paper to see how much we're
- 15:43saving with the electric truck. We are saving two hundred and two fifty a
- 15:48month on we don't have to buy gas. I mean, our electric bill
- 15:50went up one hundred bucks a month, which sounds like a lot until you
- 15:52take into account I don't have to ever buy gas again. Do you keep
- 15:56another vehicle to go on vaca. We do, Yes, we do have
- 16:00it. Yes, we do have another vehicle for when we have to,
- 16:03you know, load all the kids up it. See that a lot.
- 16:06Yeah, and you know that's that's real in our lives. And we wanted
- 16:10the flexibility and need to be able to get out and be flexible. And
- 16:12until the there's enough charging stations out there and more fast charging stations, it'll
- 16:18be it'll be a little bit difficult if you're going, if you spend a
- 16:22lot of time out there driving and be careful in the mountains towing in the
- 16:26winter, you're gonna that's I have heard that. I have heard. Yeah,
- 16:29I get about two hundred and thirty nine months charge. So it's pretty
- 16:33good. Now if we towe something or it's extremely cold outside, it will
- 16:36cut it down a little bit. Did you have to do any modifications in
- 16:40your home to change The only thing we had to do was get the charger
- 16:42installed, and it was I think seven hundred dollars for that, which you
- 16:45can also write off as a tax return, so it was it was essentially
- 16:48free for us to get that charge. Lot of lightnings to come with these
- 16:52tax credits right. Yeah, we got the full tax credit because it's made
- 16:56in America, and so we got the full thing, and then the rebate
- 16:59on installing the chargers. So it's and we wanted to get the kind Apparently
- 17:03they make some kind of a charger where if you lose power, your forward
- 17:07lightning can power your house for three days. Yes, that's a power boost,
- 17:11yes system, and I wanted to get that. They were at the
- 17:15time there were supply chain issues. You couldn't get that installed, but I
- 17:18would love to add it. And we're still having those issues Toyota's telling,
- 17:22I mean, just on the same issues of how many hybrids can you build?
- 17:26Right, and getting those resources to the manufacturers so they can build all
- 17:30the vehicles to sub meet the demand is still hard. We can't build enough
- 17:33four by four as we can. You know, the whole industry is still
- 17:37dealing with that. But yeah, that's a great story, and I'd love
- 17:41to hear your personal experience with that. That's real, that's really neat.
- 17:45I love it, and it's it's nice. I have never had a truck
- 17:49before, so I got thrown into the whole, you know, kettle and
- 17:52fire both. I got the electric and the truck. So I feel like
- 17:56I'm driving a Semi when I'm in that thing. Very cool, very powerful
- 18:00semi and you can see everything on the road exactly. Yeah, I don't
- 18:04know. And as your Ford d we told you about pick up and delivery
- 18:08and that you with a Ford you can actually have. We'll come get your
- 18:11car and bring it back. Not that you meet my much maintenance with the
- 18:15lightning, but you are going to need to rotate those tires, you know.
- 18:18We actually did have to. The only recall we had was some kind
- 18:22of a pump for the wipe or fluid and they actually came out to my
- 18:26house and my driveway, which was a mobile service and pick up and delivery.
- 18:30Right. Yeah, that's an offering that Ford is encouraging all their dealers
- 18:34to do around the country and we're doing it here in Barblesviel too, something
- 18:38that's awesome to hear. So let's go back to the Sustainability Alliance and what
- 18:44you guys are doing. There's just remind people again about your organization and what
- 18:51the mission is. I know we've talked about it before, but it's new
- 18:55to a lot of our area and I know you've been in Tulsa like you
- 18:57said, for twenty two years, and you know, talk about some of
- 19:00that work and how the organization got started. Let's let's scare it. Well,
- 19:04it got started in my living room and I kind of just group in
- 19:10there and really, you know the goal was just to connect people around these
- 19:12topics and to kind of you know, we had people coming to us and
- 19:17said, well, where do I buy local foods? Or where could I
- 19:21buy a solar panel and those kind of things, and so we had at
- 19:23one point developed a green directory to connect people with those resources and those companies
- 19:29that offer you know, different products that are like like your company does and
- 19:33uh. And so through that conversation, we realized we continue to respond to
- 19:37what our members were asking us, and part of that was into the business
- 19:41community they really wanted to. We we have a B to B Case for
- 19:45Sustainability series that I mentioned, and we bring all kinds of topics, uh
- 19:49to the forefront. We even our last month we had one on the intersection
- 19:53of mental health, sustainability and employee retention. I mean, and you know,
- 19:59for a business, if you're losing employees, you're losing money and and
- 20:02so yeah, and mental health really got highlighted during the pandemic, and so
- 20:08we had an amazing panel come together and discuss that. So we really try
- 20:12to really hit the people, profit and plan of that triple bottom line and
- 20:17how that really they do come together and where as we're working together in these
- 20:22different components of our lives and our businesses, how we can really save money
- 20:26and create a higher quality of life for our employees and our families. And
- 20:32and really it's essential that we're protecting these natural resources that we all share.
- 20:37It's it's essential that it is a part of our everyday practice. And there's
- 20:44different things we can do and kind of as you mentioned, Brad, a
- 20:45lot of some of these things are the bridge to some of those successes and
- 20:51and that we have to embrace that each little success things are also interconnected.
- 20:56You know, we talked about the chain and you know, and things like
- 20:59how many gas stations there are and charging stations and whatever else we need next,
- 21:04that's all going to matter and this and working together, it's the only
- 21:07way we're going to get that done right. And there's just so many great
- 21:11community partners out there that just to collaborate and work on these things together.
- 21:17That's you know, through the b to b and through our First Thursday program
- 21:19we see a lot of that. And actually we have another program that's coming
- 21:23up. We're kicking it off this month, will be at Circle Cinema showing
- 21:27Common Ground, and this is a film really talking about the farming industry and
- 21:33things that we can do and it's really about people profit plannet, I mean
- 21:37farming is that to a tea? And we'll be kicking off a program called
- 21:41First Steps, which is really helping companies and organizations and schools and faith based
- 21:48communities they're wanting to get that first step in to like how does sustainability a
- 21:52part of our community? And how can I get started? Because it can
- 21:55feel pretty overwhelming, and so we really try to break it down into some
- 22:00doable steps and because we want people to feel successful and you know, there's
- 22:04different individuals and businesses that are going to be, you know, way ahead
- 22:07of the curve and others that are just peering in and we have a home
- 22:11for everyone. Yeah. That's one of the things I liked most was that
- 22:14you don't It's it's not the type of organization where you feel judge, you
- 22:18judgie, like, oh you didn't recycle that can now how dare you?
- 22:21You know? This is a we we strive to be to meet people where
- 22:23they are. So if somebody has never recycled an aluminum can, or if
- 22:27they're you know, we want to try to get them to make those first
- 22:30steps to start thinking more sustainably instead of you know, using the plastic bags
- 22:34at the grocery store, take your own reusable bags. And so we meet
- 22:38you where you are with no judgment, no you know, no criticism.
- 22:42We want to help you achieve that goal. And how do you are you
- 22:47a membership organization or how do you fundraise? And where does your support come
- 22:51from? Right? And I'll pass it over here to send me a second,
- 22:53but it is you know, it's membership based, so scorecard members.
- 23:00We also have business members, individual members. We also have sponsorships. So
- 23:03if you want to sponsor one of our programs you believe in the one of
- 23:06the programs, you can help to sponsor that, like our B to B
- 23:08program first Thursdays and then Recharge is really our big fundraiser that's coming up and
- 23:12a chance to really show that support that would support all of our different programs.
- 23:18So and we're so excited to have something on the team because she's helping
- 23:22to bring the sun in and I like that well, and I'm excited about
- 23:32it too. This is an opportunity to fundraise for a great organization. It's
- 23:34something I feel good about that's done that before. Yeah, great feeling and
- 23:41being a fundraiser for something like the Nature Conservancy well, being able to lay
- 23:47your head down at night and feel good about the organization that you work for
- 23:49and the people that you work that to have that common goal that we're all
- 23:53in this, I mean, we share one planet, and so to be
- 23:56able to pull in businesses and individuals and groups and now you know, expanding
- 24:00into churches or synagogues or schools. This is a great opportunity to get people
- 24:04to meet them where they are, to give a little bit of education and
- 24:08support and programming that can help them achieve those goals. And so, yeah,
- 24:11we were always looking for new business partners. We're always looking for new
- 24:15individual members and you can you can go to our website, the Sustainability Alliance
- 24:19dot com. Do they find you? That's the question. If I don't
- 24:23find you, you can find out all right. That's outstanding And anyway,

- 25:07Mustang birthday and stuff. And we've got lots of great inventory on the ground
- 25:14right now. But it is turning really fast. We continue to kind of
- 25:18we learned that during the pandemic, how you know, to keep our inventories
- 25:22lean and mean. But starting to grow a little bit around so deer trades
- 25:27and some more of that that we used to be able to do a lot,
- 25:32you know, and find vehicle vehicles. It's starting to happen again.
