- 0:03Speaker 1: This is the Patriots Catch twenty two podcasts with Evan
- 0:07Speaker 1: Lazar and Alex Barth.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Blazarre and Lazarre.
- 0:10Speaker 3: He everybody nailed it, joined us always buy an our
- 0:13Speaker 3: bar Gap Kida. Here is Evan Lazar and Alex bar Alex.
- 0:20Speaker 4: I haven't come up with a great way to describe
- 0:24Speaker 4: how I feel about this Patriots draft. I didn't hate it,
- 0:27Speaker 4: like I'm not like down on it, but I'm also
- 0:29Speaker 4: not over the moon about what they did either. I'm
- 0:32Speaker 4: kind of somewhere in the middle with it. And I
- 0:34Speaker 4: think some of that has to do with the fact
- 0:36Speaker 4: some of their picks were made for twenty twenty seven
- 0:39Speaker 4: and beyond. I just think that this was kind of
- 0:42Speaker 4: okay cat Catch twenty two.
- 0:49Speaker 3: I feel like that's a good way to describe it. Okay,
- 0:51Speaker 3: all right, here we go. You know, we're into the.
- 0:54Speaker 4: The real bowels of the off season now, bars like
- 0:57Speaker 4: this is we're starting to get really because getting we're
- 1:04Speaker 4: getting there, though, We're getting We're getting there to the
- 1:06Speaker 4: real downtime.
- 1:07Speaker 3: But this with this team and with all the A. J.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Brown stuff like that, that's going to carry us in
- 1:13Speaker 4: June and whether he's traded or not, the speculation of it,
- 1:16Speaker 4: is he going to get traded every day is going
- 1:18Speaker 4: to be a big talking point.
- 1:20Speaker 1: So we'll have that three four weeks.
- 1:23Speaker 4: We do have rookie minniamp this weekend. That'll be Saturday afternoon.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Caleb Lomu will be on the field with the jersey
- 1:30Speaker 4: tomorrow afternoon. I think I said, okay, well, somewhere in
- 1:37Speaker 4: the facility he will be holding up.
- 1:39Speaker 1: A jersey supposed ring today. Well at some point so
- 1:44Speaker 1: they know. But like I thought, it was supposed to
- 1:45Speaker 1: ring tomorrow afternoon because I was trying to play golf.
- 1:47Speaker 1: But it's supposed to this afternoon, so he should be
- 1:49Speaker 1: on the field tomorrow.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, I think he'll be all set.
- 1:52Speaker 4: So we'll get that. We'll get rookie mini caamp. I'm
- 1:55Speaker 4: really looking forward to that. Although it's not what's the
- 1:59Speaker 4: word truly real football, it is the closest that we
- 2:05Speaker 4: get this time of year to some real football. So
- 2:07Speaker 4: they will line up and throw a pass on Saturday
- 2:11Speaker 4: in front of us at rookie mini camp. So that'll
- 2:14Speaker 4: be fun, and you know, the beat goes on. Now,
- 2:17Speaker 4: there's a couple of things I want to.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Talk about here.
- 2:19Speaker 4: Off the top of the show to kind of set
- 2:21Speaker 4: the table. I also want to do a UDFA deep
- 2:24Speaker 4: dive because we didn't really We touched on it briefly
- 2:26Speaker 4: at the end of the show last week, Alex, but
- 2:29Speaker 4: we didn't do a full UDFA dissection that we're going
- 2:33Speaker 4: to do today.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Talk about some of these guys.
- 2:35Speaker 4: I have some favorites already out of this group, just
- 2:38Speaker 4: off their college tape, so we'll get into that. But
- 2:40Speaker 4: the topic that I wanted to set the table with
- 2:42Speaker 4: and present to the masses and present to you. Now
- 2:46Speaker 4: that the dust is settled, the draft is over, free
- 2:49Speaker 4: agency is obviously over. That doesn't mean that the roster
- 2:53Speaker 4: building is over though, you know, there are still guys
- 2:56Speaker 4: available this time of year post you know, draft acquisitions
- 3:01Speaker 4: potentially we talked about aj Brown. There's also that window
- 3:05Speaker 4: of acquisition period in August at the end of the summer,
- 3:09Speaker 4: usually right around cut down day, where teams are trimming
- 3:12Speaker 4: their roster. Sometimes guys get traded that time of year.
- 3:15Speaker 4: Last year, you know, Michael Parsons got traded at that
- 3:19Speaker 4: time frame. So it's not out of the realm of
- 3:21Speaker 4: possibility that a major move could be done in the
- 3:24Speaker 4: summer as well. So what are the biggest remaining needs
- 3:29Speaker 4: for the Patriots on this roster now that they've gone
- 3:32Speaker 4: through the free agency of the draft. I have three
- 3:34Speaker 4: positions that I look at in terms of biggest needs,
- 3:37Speaker 4: and I'll put this caveat in there.
- 3:39Speaker 3: I did not put wide receivers.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I was gonna say, Okay, so we're doing.
- 3:43Speaker 4: We're gonna put that thing to the side because I
- 3:45Speaker 4: feel like AJ Brown's probably going to be a Patriot
- 3:50Speaker 4: at some point in the next couple of months, and
- 3:53Speaker 4: so I'm not gonna.
- 3:54Speaker 3: That that's a need. If that, if or when that happens,
- 3:59Speaker 3: that need will be fulfilled.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Sure, right, So.
- 4:02Speaker 4: Like we all agree with that one, but I'm more
- 4:05Speaker 4: talking about some of the other things so we don't
- 4:08Speaker 4: have to rehash AJ Brown again, which we're both feel
- 4:12Speaker 4: the same about.
- 4:12Speaker 3: I feel like or on board with whatever you want
- 4:14Speaker 3: to call it.
- 4:15Speaker 4: So we can get into the details of how to
- 4:18Speaker 4: attack all these and everything. But my three positions that
- 4:23Speaker 4: I'm looking at right now, Number one, to me, I
- 4:27Speaker 4: think it's really not too much of an argument in
- 4:30Speaker 4: my case is, in my opinion is off ball linebackers
- 4:34Speaker 4: are inside linebacker. Right now, you have Robert splain Christian Ellis,
- 4:39Speaker 4: kJ britt, Chad Mumma, Obi Zor and Klil Jacobs, who
- 4:44Speaker 4: we'll talk about in a little bit Morelier UDFA signings.
- 4:48Speaker 4: I don't feel great about their death here. Robert Spulaine
- 4:52Speaker 4: and Christian Ellis are solid to good players. Feel great
- 4:56Speaker 4: about Splaine, especially if he's healthy and available.
- 5:00Speaker 3: This is fine.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Behind those two guys, I don't feel like they have
- 5:05Speaker 4: great proven depth. You know, maybe kJ Britt is Christian
- 5:10Speaker 4: Ellis Jack Gibbons clone and ends up being a better
- 5:13Speaker 4: defensive player than he's shown based off of the special
- 5:17Speaker 4: team stuff that he already does. Maybe that's the case.
- 5:21Speaker 4: Off Ball linebackers a big one to me. We can
- 5:23Speaker 4: talk about maybe some options and ways to go there.
- 5:27Speaker 3: The second one is safety. You know these and I
- 5:30Speaker 3: think there's a theme here.
- 5:31Speaker 4: This is kind of the positions they didn't address in
- 5:33Speaker 4: the draft, right you know, safety love Byron and Craig Woodson.
- 5:39Speaker 4: That's a great tandem. I like del Pettis. I don't
- 5:44Speaker 4: know how what is del Pettis's ceiling as a player.
- 5:49Speaker 3: You know, is he a guy that can really push
- 5:51Speaker 3: for true.
- 5:52Speaker 4: Three safety packages to be a bigger part of their
- 5:55Speaker 4: defense and be a bigger part of their identity on
- 5:58Speaker 4: that side of the football. I don't know, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 4: Mike Brown and John Saunders kind of round out that
- 6:03Speaker 4: depth chart fires there at the end of the roster.
- 6:07Speaker 4: So there's a lot, you know, a substantial amount on
- 6:11Speaker 4: Petis right now, not only as an injury replacement, but
- 6:15Speaker 4: also as maybe pushing for third safety snaps. You know,
- 6:18Speaker 4: let's face it, like Buyard's been incredibly durable throughout his career,
- 6:22Speaker 4: but he's thirty three years old. So if there's any
- 6:26Speaker 4: sort of wear and tear right there, then you're looking
- 6:29Speaker 4: at a situation at safety where a del Pettis is
- 6:31Speaker 4: playing like meaningful snaps if either Woodson or Bayern gets hurt.
- 6:36Speaker 4: The last one that I had was interior offensive line,
- 6:40Speaker 4: another spot that they didn't really hit in the draft. Now,
- 6:44Speaker 4: Elliott Wolf hinted that maybe Caleb Loomo in a pinch,
- 6:47Speaker 4: could play guard if he had to, But ideally that's
- 6:51Speaker 4: not the path. But you know, you have the three starters,
- 6:54Speaker 4: Vard Tucker on went who Jared Wilson, and you like
- 6:57Speaker 4: Ben Brown as the super sub. But the problem is
- 7:00Speaker 4: if Ben Brown gets hurt or Ben Brown has to
- 7:02Speaker 4: play because one of those starters gets hurt, then who's
- 7:05Speaker 4: Ben Brown's backup?
- 7:06Speaker 3: Who's the backup to the backup at this spot?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Right? You know, he's backing up so many spots, right,
- 7:12Speaker 1: He's backing up all three spots.
- 7:13Speaker 4: And with a guy like Vera Tucker who has an
- 7:16Speaker 4: injury history, Ben Brown is almost like your third and
- 7:21Speaker 4: a half starter here, and so who's really his backup?
- 7:25Speaker 3: I think is a roster battle.
- 7:26Speaker 4: Now, I'm not necessarily you know, I looked at some
- 7:29Speaker 4: of the free agents. Guys like Joel Buttonio is still
- 7:31Speaker 4: out there. I don't know if you're going that route
- 7:34Speaker 4: just because like a thirty four year old Joel Buttonio
- 7:38Speaker 4: isn't signing to be a backup, a backup to the backup, right,
- 7:43Speaker 4: He's signing to start somewhere. So I'm not sure you
- 7:45Speaker 4: necessarily need to do that. So maybe this comes from
- 7:48Speaker 4: within him. There's a couple of udfas that we're going to.
- 7:51Speaker 1: Get to that. That could also be one that's like like
- 7:53Speaker 1: you talked about in August, like a post roster cuts
- 7:55Speaker 1: waiverclaim thing they've got the last few years.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Yeah, that's a good point.
- 7:59Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe somebody, you know, there's a cast off from
- 8:02Speaker 4: another team that gets interested.
- 8:03Speaker 3: Uh, you know, is an interesting one. I flarted with
- 8:06Speaker 3: nose tackle.
- 8:07Speaker 1: So that was the one I was gonna say over safety,
- 8:10Speaker 1: I just I would like to see them have more
- 8:12Speaker 1: safety too.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I'm with you.
- 8:14Speaker 1: But between del Pettis, Mike Brown has played some defense too,
- 8:17Speaker 1: Like I feel like he's been forgotten about and I've
- 8:19Speaker 1: been guilty of that at times.
- 8:20Speaker 3: And see Jalen Hawkins, right, like a guy that has played.
- 8:24Speaker 1: Jalen Hawkins was starting.
- 8:25Speaker 4: But Jalen Hawkins played a little bit before he got here,
- 8:29Speaker 4: was kind of brought in as like a fringe roster
- 8:31Speaker 4: and then maybe maybe Yeah.
- 8:33Speaker 1: So I mean between those guys, I there's a little
- 8:35Speaker 1: something in terms of just true nose tackle. The guy
- 8:38Speaker 1: that's gonna yeah blocks two gas. I know they don't
- 8:41Speaker 1: do a lot too gapping, do you know what I'm saying?
- 8:42Speaker 1: Like he blocks occupy blockers, stop the run? Who is it?
- 8:49Speaker 3: It's fair?
- 8:49Speaker 1: Who is that guy? Like maybe Durdin but Dirten they
- 8:52Speaker 1: kind of used more as pass rusher. We'll see with
- 8:55Speaker 1: Eric Gregory, he didn't really play a lot last year.
- 8:58Speaker 1: And then the other guy's David Blay who's the udfa
- 9:01Speaker 1: who will get to Yeah, I don't hate, but is undersize,
- 9:05Speaker 1: like who's their nose tackle?
- 9:09Speaker 3: Is it possible? And I agree with your assessment.
- 9:14Speaker 4: It still feels like as a front, you know, as
- 9:16Speaker 4: a defensive front, they still want to have a one technique,
- 9:22Speaker 4: not a pure zero up on the center nose, but
- 9:25Speaker 4: a guy that shaded into.
- 9:26Speaker 3: The a gap.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Now, that player in this defense might be a little
- 9:30Speaker 4: bit more of a penetrator than what.
- 9:32Speaker 3: They I guess space eater.
- 9:34Speaker 1: I like the idea of having a guy that you
- 9:35Speaker 1: can bring off the bench when it's fourth and one
- 9:37Speaker 1: or when you're on the baple line. And you know,
- 9:39Speaker 1: Tonga obviously was more than that last year, but part
- 9:42Speaker 1: of his role was that. And I like the idea
- 9:45Speaker 1: of having that guy like even you know, even if
- 9:48Speaker 1: you're a team that throws the ball to the running
- 9:50Speaker 1: back slot, still having that big, bruising running back you
- 9:52Speaker 1: can put in in the short yardage and things like that.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I like having that that option. Now, that could also
- 9:57Speaker 1: be a guy that you get during roster cuts, but
- 10:00Speaker 1: I would I would put that above safety.
- 10:03Speaker 4: So the reason why I say that about the nose
- 10:06Speaker 4: tackle maybe being a little bit of a different body
- 10:08Speaker 4: type or skill set than like a true space eating
- 10:11Speaker 4: nose tackles, because even though you know we're putting a
- 10:14Speaker 4: lot on a UDFA, A Blay did play on the
- 10:17Speaker 4: nose at you know in college. Like now he's three
- 10:21Speaker 4: hundred pounds, like two hundred ninety five.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Pounds the thing he's listed to ninety two in his
- 10:24Speaker 1: pro day.
- 10:24Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's a penetrating one technique, Like he's a
- 10:27Speaker 4: get up the field kind of guy.
- 10:29Speaker 1: He can play the run though, Like I just don't know, I.
- 10:33Speaker 4: Don't know if that is big enough at this level.
- 10:36Speaker 4: I don't know if he's literally.
- 10:37Speaker 1: Big enough so that that's what I was gonna say.
- 10:39Speaker 1: I mean, I know we're gonna get to the udfas,
- 10:41Speaker 1: but just for I was gonna what I was gonna
- 10:45Speaker 1: say with him is like, it's not what if he
- 10:46Speaker 1: puts on like twenty pounds between now and camp, it's
- 10:49Speaker 1: a lot of way to put on, but yeah, fifteen sure,
- 10:52Speaker 1: Like that's not impossible. No, it's not easy, but it's
- 10:55Speaker 1: not impossible. And like that, I think then that you'd
- 10:57Speaker 1: be looking at that one more realistically.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Yeah, I just look at him as you know, that's
- 11:02Speaker 4: where he played in college, and the question is is
- 11:05Speaker 4: that style going to translate obviously to the pros at
- 11:09Speaker 4: that size is a fair question.
- 11:11Speaker 3: But he had a lot of good reps of.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Not only being able to, you know, get up the field,
- 11:18Speaker 4: but I also thought that he absorbed contact pretty well
- 11:21Speaker 4: and was able to kind of hold his position on
- 11:23Speaker 4: combination blocks and things like that. A lot different to
- 11:27Speaker 4: do that at two ninety five at the college level
- 11:29Speaker 4: than two ninety five at the pros.
- 11:30Speaker 3: You know, that's a different animal.
- 11:32Speaker 4: The one spot though, I looking through some of the
- 11:34Speaker 4: available free agents that are available right now, I kind
- 11:38Speaker 4: of think that there's some interesting off ball linebackers that
- 11:42Speaker 4: I wouldn't mind a sort of you know, Belichick used
- 11:46Speaker 4: to do this all the time. You bring in like
- 11:48Speaker 4: guys at the end of their careers that you know,
- 11:50Speaker 4: maybe you can get one more year out of And
- 11:53Speaker 4: usually it happened like around this time of year. The
- 11:56Speaker 4: big name, obviously that's still out there is Bobby Wagner.
- 11:59Speaker 4: Now I don't know if Bobby Wagner still wants to
- 12:01Speaker 4: play football, Like, I don't know where he's at in
- 12:04Speaker 4: terms of his retirement and all that kind of stuff.
- 12:07Speaker 3: He's still a free agent. Matt Mulano is still a
- 12:10Speaker 3: free agent now.
- 12:11Speaker 4: He has injuries that really really added up in Buffalo
- 12:15Speaker 4: that kind of led to his you know, career.
- 12:18Speaker 3: They're fizzling out. But interesting name.
- 12:22Speaker 4: I always liked Bobby Okeareki. I always liked him. I
- 12:27Speaker 4: liked him since the draft, you know, since he's his
- 12:29Speaker 4: draft year.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Yeah, he's available.
- 12:31Speaker 4: But Wagner and Milano, even if it's just name brand
- 12:36Speaker 4: recognition at this point, are name brand linebackers that do
- 12:41Speaker 4: they have anything left in the tank? I just wonder
- 12:44Speaker 4: if maybe a move like that would be worth it
- 12:47Speaker 4: to them or do they feel like, let's give you know,
- 12:51Speaker 4: brit Muma, Obi's or Jacob's that group of chance.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Yeah, I even like some of their their mini camp invites.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Jordan quiet Kowski. I forget, if we talked about him
- 13:00Speaker 1: last week from Central Michigan, you probably haven't watched him.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I don't know if you have.
- 13:04Speaker 3: No He.
- 13:06Speaker 1: Flies around the football field. He's constantly near the football. Now,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you know, it's gonna be an adjustment doing that in
- 13:13Speaker 1: the NFL versus doing it in the MAC. But like
- 13:17Speaker 1: he's kind of the MAC version of what like Jacob
- 13:21Speaker 1: Rodriguez was where it's just like he's always at the football.
- 13:28Speaker 1: He can create turnovers, three forced fumbles to interceptions. Last
- 13:31Speaker 1: year one hundred and seventeen tackles, fourteen tackles for the loss.
- 13:35Speaker 1: He just plays like a missile. And again, it's just
- 13:37Speaker 1: that step up in competition. How's he going to handle that?
- 13:40Speaker 1: I think he's a little undersized. If I remember correctly,
- 13:44Speaker 1: he is nice six one two thirty five. So I'll
- 13:48Speaker 1: be interested to watch him on Saturday.
- 13:50Speaker 3: So nose tackle. Just looking around here at the free
- 13:54Speaker 3: agent names. DJ Reader. He didn't sign yet, right, but
- 13:58Speaker 3: he was like meeting with some team. I think I
- 14:00Speaker 3: saw that, Yeah, I think I saw.
- 14:01Speaker 4: His name pop up in the news that he was
- 14:04Speaker 4: taking a visit or something like that.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Obviously that that's a you know, a.
- 14:10Speaker 4: Solid Oh, I guess he's signed with the Giants now,
- 14:12Speaker 4: I think, oh, yeah, I knew he was. He was
- 14:15Speaker 4: getting interest in buzz. I want to say day Kwon
- 14:20Speaker 4: Jones who the Bills last year? He might have been
- 14:22Speaker 4: with the with Rabel and Tennessee at some point, he
- 14:25Speaker 4: was definitely on the Titans.
- 14:26Speaker 3: I don't know if they overlapped. I want to say
- 14:28Speaker 3: they did.
- 14:29Speaker 1: They did. Yeah, Rabls first year there was eighteen, right, yeah, yeah,
- 14:34Speaker 1: so three years.
- 14:35Speaker 4: Yeah, so maybe somebody like that, you know, who's played
- 14:38Speaker 4: some traditional nose tackle.
- 14:40Speaker 3: There's some names out there.
- 14:41Speaker 4: Safety was pretty thin looking at the free agents and
- 14:45Speaker 4: interior offensive line. The guys at the top of the
- 14:47Speaker 4: list are all guys that are like Potonio, who have
- 14:50Speaker 4: right years of starting experience, and it doesn't really seem like.
- 14:53Speaker 1: That one again, I think that's a roster cuts move.
- 14:57Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, so that's topic that Umber one, resetting the
- 15:03Speaker 4: needs there on the roster. Topic Number two that we
- 15:06Speaker 4: wanted to get to was the udfas. So I have one, two, three, four, five, six,
- 15:11Speaker 4: seven guys out of the twelve I think they're up
- 15:14Speaker 4: to at this point if you include Khil Jacobs, who
- 15:18Speaker 4: was kind of like a reported signing here recently, I
- 15:22Speaker 4: have seven guys that I feel like have a chance
- 15:25Speaker 4: to make the roster, and then we can kind of,
- 15:28Speaker 4: you know, dive into them individually.
- 15:30Speaker 1: I have eight plus two rookiemunic camp tryout guys.
- 15:34Speaker 3: That doesn't surprise me.
- 15:37Speaker 4: Miles Montgomery I think has a chance running back, Cameron
- 15:41Speaker 4: Dorner I think has a chance at receiver, Tanner Arkin
- 15:45Speaker 4: I think would have a chance in most years at
- 15:47Speaker 4: tight end.
- 15:48Speaker 3: I just don't.
- 15:49Speaker 4: I don't know how you get on the roster at
- 15:51Speaker 4: this particular year at tight end, He's gonna have an
- 15:54Speaker 4: uphill battle. But I like the talent, like I like
- 15:56Speaker 4: the tape. I thought his blocking tape in particular is
- 15:58Speaker 4: really really good.
- 15:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:01Speaker 4: John Darius Morgan, a guard from U A B. I
- 16:03Speaker 4: think he might have the best shot interesting player, uh Rizzy,
- 16:08Speaker 4: just because of his versatility. I didn't like him quite
- 16:11Speaker 4: as much on tape as I.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Liked Morgan, but I got a position player, Yeah, I
- 16:15Speaker 1: got his versatility is there, and he's got some you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: size and some you know, just raw power and stuff
- 16:22Speaker 1: like that. He actually tested really well at his protain
- 16:25Speaker 1: doesn't necessarily look like that on tape. To me, he
- 16:29Speaker 1: looked a little clunky, like a little uh stiff in
- 16:31Speaker 1: his movements, but he had like.
- 16:33Speaker 3: A ridiculous r as. So I don't know. Now, I
- 16:36Speaker 3: think those are proain numbers.
- 16:38Speaker 4: David bly Blay Blay we just talked about, and Cleil Jacobs.
- 16:43Speaker 4: Those are the seven guys that in my deep dive,
- 16:46Speaker 4: I was like, Okay, these guys have a chance to
- 16:48Speaker 4: make the roster.
- 16:49Speaker 3: Who were the other ones?
- 16:50Speaker 1: So I didn't have Arkin.
- 16:54Speaker 3: Just because of the just because he's positions like.
- 16:56Speaker 1: Some of it with u DFAs is it's you have
- 16:59Speaker 1: to pass to the roster. It's not just being the
- 17:01Speaker 1: best player. You gotta have a wit. Like how many
- 17:03Speaker 1: times do they have good UDFA corners in the Belichick
- 17:05Speaker 1: years that wouldn't make the team because they were just loaded.
- 17:07Speaker 1: A corner who cravon the blanca. I was such a
- 17:10Speaker 1: cravon the block, truth, but they didn't have the room.
- 17:11Speaker 1: Kenny mooreould be another one. So like Arkin maybe fits h.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Robbie gold is probably the ultimate example. Yeah, he was
- 17:19Speaker 1: a Patriots UDFA Adam and ENTI that I was didn't
- 17:22Speaker 1: need him. He went on at a very successful career,
- 17:23Speaker 1: So I would put Arkin in that category. The other
- 17:27Speaker 1: ones I had, uh Nick Dejaneiro from James Madison was
- 17:31Speaker 1: another receiver kind of like you said with Rizzy, the versatility,
- 17:34Speaker 1: a guy that I think can line up all over
- 17:36Speaker 1: the formation, a guy that has sure hands, which is
- 17:40Speaker 1: you can't really say about the other UDFA receivers, and
- 17:43Speaker 1: a guy who had a big game against Oregon. So
- 17:45Speaker 1: so it was a little bit of pop there, and
- 17:46Speaker 1: then Kyle Dixon from Culver Stockton, He's another one that
- 17:50Speaker 1: might be blocked, especially if they get AJ Brown. I
- 17:53Speaker 1: mean he's an AX, He's a peer outside guy. And
- 17:55Speaker 1: when you look at AJ Brown, I mean, we'll see
- 17:58Speaker 1: if they keep Kishan Boodey, m Kayshawn Booty, Mac Hollins
- 18:02Speaker 1: can play outside, Kyle Williams can play outside, Like is
- 18:04Speaker 1: there a spot for him? I also don't know how
- 18:07Speaker 1: much special team, like how much Special Team's ability he's
- 18:10Speaker 1: gonna have. But they gave him a pretty significant signing
- 18:13Speaker 1: bonus to a hundred and fifty two thousand dollars, I
- 18:16Speaker 1: will say, because I feel like some people saw that
- 18:18Speaker 1: and put him on the team. The biggest signing bonus
- 18:22Speaker 1: last year, which was bigger than Dixon's, was CJ. Dupree,
- 18:25Speaker 1: who did not make the team. He was on the
- 18:27Speaker 1: practice squad and he hung around. He eventually ended up
- 18:29Speaker 1: on the roster, and maybe that's ultimately what happens with
- 18:31Speaker 1: Kyle Dixon. So I don't think he's a lock, but
- 18:35Speaker 1: if they're gonna give him that kind of money, they're
- 18:36Speaker 1: clearly seriously considering him. So he belongs on the list.
- 18:39Speaker 1: I think that's so. Yeah. I also had Dorner, Montgomery, Morgan,
- 18:45Speaker 1: Rizzy Blay, Jacobs. I don't know if you want to
- 18:49Speaker 1: do the mini camp guys now or later.
- 18:51Speaker 3: We can do those later.
- 18:52Speaker 4: So I think Dixon deserves a seat at the table here.
- 18:57Speaker 4: I think he deserves to be in the conversation. In
- 19:00Speaker 4: full disclosure, there's no tape with.
- 19:02Speaker 3: This guy at Culver Stockton. Like I tried, I asked
- 19:07Speaker 3: all my resources. I couldn't even get a picture of.
- 19:10Speaker 3: I tried to dig up anything I could happen. So
- 19:13Speaker 3: I'm not gonna sit.
- 19:13Speaker 4: Here and like say that I know all about Kyle
- 19:16Speaker 4: Dixon in his game, because that's not fair to him
- 19:18Speaker 4: or you know, that's not being truthful to the to
- 19:21Speaker 4: the matter. I'm very interested to see what he looks
- 19:23Speaker 4: like because the athleticism, you know, the rot them is impressive. Yeah,
- 19:29Speaker 4: you know, he's got size, he's a high weight, speed guy.
- 19:31Speaker 4: He's got that his three minute highlight reel that's been
- 19:36Speaker 4: going around Twitter from his huddle account, his personal huddle account,
- 19:39Speaker 4: which is like what kids in high school do that
- 19:42Speaker 4: are trying to get noticed on the recruiting trail. His
- 19:45Speaker 4: person it's it's an impressive highlight reel. Who's he playing against?
- 19:50Speaker 4: You know, what's the whole film look like? I couldn't
- 19:52Speaker 4: tell you that. So I just had a tough time
- 19:54Speaker 4: giving a complete analysis of him as a player because
- 19:58Speaker 4: I don't have enough information to make that judgment call.
- 20:01Speaker 4: So this weekend we'll see him at rookie mini camp.
- 20:04Speaker 4: We'll obviously see him in OTAs and over the summer,
- 20:07Speaker 4: let's see, like maybe there's something there that that he
- 20:10Speaker 4: could potentially make a roster push.
- 20:12Speaker 3: H Let's start with.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Dorner though, since we're on the receivers. Dorner is, to me,
- 20:18Speaker 4: your classic crafty shifty separates at the top of the route.
- 20:24Speaker 3: It isn't fast kind of receiver.
- 20:26Speaker 1: So Josh mctaniel's receiver.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I I, you know, I don't know if
- 20:30Speaker 4: he's necessarily I'm not gonna go like full Jacobe Myers, Like,
- 20:33Speaker 4: I don't know if that's necessarily a great comp but
- 20:37Speaker 4: like he's got you know, fringe NFL speed four five
- 20:42Speaker 4: seven in the forty yard dash. But he's got some wiggle,
- 20:47Speaker 4: he's got some craft at the top of the route,
- 20:49Speaker 4: he's got some nuanced to his releases and his ability
- 20:52Speaker 4: to attack leverage and his stemwork and all that good stuff.
- 20:55Speaker 4: A little bit after the catch. He've had a pretty
- 20:58Speaker 4: good game against Tulane. Uh, you know it just college
- 21:02Speaker 4: football playoff cos he's a man. So there's something there
- 21:05Speaker 4: with Dorner's your classic. Yeah, he's a he's a classic
- 21:08Speaker 4: McDaniels guy. I hate to kind of put.
- 21:09Speaker 1: No, but he can play a little bit. I remember,
- 21:12Speaker 1: so that offense, I'm curious what you thought of that
- 21:14Speaker 1: offense and what you thought a mess to maker too.
- 21:15Speaker 3: So the quarterback's nice.
- 21:17Speaker 1: So he's one of the big transfer's gonna be at
- 21:19Speaker 1: Oklahoma State this year.
- 21:19Speaker 4: So he's a big dude, big arm, a little bit
- 21:22Speaker 4: of a statue, but he was he's.
- 21:25Speaker 1: Going to be in the He might play two more years,
- 21:27Speaker 1: but he's going to be in the round one conversation probably.
- 21:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:30Speaker 1: So that was the highest scoring offense in college football.
- 21:33Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 21:33Speaker 1: It was the second ranked passing green It was the
- 21:36Speaker 1: second ranked passing offense in college fall. This was all
- 21:39Speaker 1: you want. They were just spreading it out in route concepts.
- 21:43Speaker 1: This was his tight khaki pants offense. Fun I I
- 21:46Speaker 1: thought you might like that, So I watched like a
- 21:49Speaker 1: decent amount of them, because when they were on it
- 21:50Speaker 1: was like, all right, like they're doing fun stuff. I'll
- 21:53Speaker 1: put this on. Dorner can play. Dorner can play little bit.
- 21:55Speaker 1: He was their number two receiver, the number one guy. Believe.
- 21:57Speaker 1: I think he I forget where you transferred. He also
- 21:59Speaker 1: transfer he wasn't draft eligible. The way they used Dorner
- 22:03Speaker 1: and now they get there a little bit differently, but
- 22:05Speaker 1: the way they used Dorner kind of reminded me of
- 22:08Speaker 1: how the Patriots use Kasehan Booty this past year, which
- 22:10Speaker 1: was a lot of intermediate and deep middle of the field,
- 22:14Speaker 1: create separation, get after the catch, and then he mixed
- 22:16Speaker 1: in the go ball from the outside. Yeah, and he
- 22:19Speaker 1: thrived in that role. And like you said, he's crafty.
- 22:22Speaker 1: I think he read zones well, he sits down. He
- 22:25Speaker 1: created a lot of easy throws for the quarterback. And
- 22:27Speaker 1: then I think his ability to turn up the field
- 22:29Speaker 1: and get yards after the catch is not it's it's
- 22:33Speaker 1: not like it's not amazing at it, but like he
- 22:37Speaker 1: always gets his after the catch. To me, it's not like,
- 22:40Speaker 1: oh my god, he's breaking all these tackles and turning
- 22:42Speaker 1: a ten yard catch into into fifty yards. But it's oh,
- 22:46Speaker 1: I thought he'd get five yards after the catch. He
- 22:48Speaker 1: got ten. Yeah, I thought he'd get two yards after
- 22:49Speaker 1: the catch, he got five, like that kind of thing.
- 22:51Speaker 1: So I like him. I think he can play again.
- 22:53Speaker 1: I don't know what his role is here, but I
- 22:57Speaker 1: think he can play. I liked him during the season
- 23:00Speaker 1: and then I thought there was an outside shot he
- 23:02Speaker 1: get drafted, but the forty at the Pro Day probably
- 23:05Speaker 1: didn't help. But him and Baron Morton are going to
- 23:10Speaker 1: be really fun to watch this summer.
- 23:12Speaker 3: That's it.
- 23:13Speaker 1: And I don't know how much further and willing to
- 23:14Speaker 1: go than that, but I think those two are gonna
- 23:16Speaker 1: be fun this summer in the preseason and like the
- 23:18Speaker 1: fourth quarter, you know.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Baron Mooreton. I not to get into a Baron Mooreton thing,
- 23:22Speaker 3: but Barren Moreton.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Is gonna have to throw passes to all four of
- 23:25Speaker 4: these UDFA receivers. Yeah, and Eli reriden this during rookie
- 23:29Speaker 4: mini camp like this early time of the off season.
- 23:32Speaker 4: So well, there's a lot riding on Baron Mooreton at
- 23:35Speaker 4: least like throwing a semi accurate ball so we can
- 23:37Speaker 4: get an assessment of some of these guys.
- 23:40Speaker 1: I think the whole idea with Kyle Dixon is whether
- 23:42Speaker 1: or not attack urate he can catch it.
- 23:43Speaker 4: I don't know if I necessarily need Baron Morton to
- 23:46Speaker 4: be good, but I need him to be good enough
- 23:47Speaker 4: to make the other guys well, no, right, Like I
- 23:50Speaker 4: need to be able to see the other guys.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Who was it they had here as the fourth quarterback,
- 23:53Speaker 1: who's like getting guys hurt because he was missing throws?
- 23:56Speaker 3: Oh the kid was a Trace mc story. Yeah, I
- 24:00Speaker 3: thought it was.
- 24:01Speaker 4: Yeah, Bean Woolridge wasn't much better for being honest. He
- 24:03Speaker 4: wasn't getting guys hurt, but he wasn't much better. Like
- 24:05Speaker 4: you have to give guys a chance.
- 24:07Speaker 1: That's true.
- 24:08Speaker 3: Okay, So that's the receiver's dorner to me.
- 24:12Speaker 4: Like his best routes were slants, digs like things in breaking.
- 24:16Speaker 1: In down like twelve yard dig route. Yeah, I think
- 24:19Speaker 1: is his money.
- 24:19Speaker 3: Right, got some snappiness to it? Yeah?
- 24:21Speaker 4: Absolutely. Miles Montgomery running back from Central Florida. Honestly, watching him,
- 24:27Speaker 4: it kind of reminded me a little bit of jam Miller,
- 24:29Speaker 4: very similar.
- 24:30Speaker 3: Like I was like, oh, this is kind of the
- 24:31Speaker 3: similar thing.
- 24:32Speaker 4: I thought Miles Montgomery had a little bit more instant
- 24:35Speaker 4: burst to the edge, like when he bounced runs into
- 24:37Speaker 4: the outside. He had a little bit more giddy up there,
- 24:40Speaker 4: but maybe not the long speed that jam Miller does.
- 24:42Speaker 4: Because Jan Miller can, you know, build up speed to
- 24:45Speaker 4: that four four I'm not sure that Montgomery quite has that.
- 24:48Speaker 4: But he ran a four to four four second forty
- 24:52Speaker 4: yard dash, so he's got some speed, has a pretty
- 24:55Speaker 4: good athletic profile. I thought that there was you know,
- 25:00Speaker 4: some pass catching ability to his game too, at least
- 25:02Speaker 4: reliable underneath target and hands.
- 25:05Speaker 3: So a lot of the things that we described with
- 25:07Speaker 3: jam Miller. I kind of feel the same way about
- 25:09Speaker 3: Miles Montgomery.
- 25:10Speaker 4: There was some people I saw on Twitter saying Miles
- 25:13Speaker 4: Montgomery is actually the better back out of the two backs.
- 25:16Speaker 4: So I think both these guys, I'm at least giving them,
- 25:20Speaker 4: let's call it equal footing to make the roster. I mean,
- 25:23Speaker 4: one's the seventh round pick and one's a UDFA, so
- 25:26Speaker 4: I would say that they're probably both starting from a
- 25:28Speaker 4: similar place to make a roster push here.
- 25:30Speaker 1: I think they're both right in that mix. Again with
- 25:32Speaker 1: like land Learris and Terrell Jennings, yep, I think the
- 25:35Speaker 1: differences for me, I had Miller ahead well in the
- 25:40Speaker 1: special teams Miller significant spect teams experience, which whoever is
- 25:43Speaker 1: winning the third running back spot or fourth running back
- 25:45Speaker 1: spot for.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Especially the turning kicks.
- 25:47Speaker 1: Yeah, I would also say, and I think this is
- 25:50Speaker 1: why Miles Montgomery didn't go undrafted and Jim Miller probably
- 25:53Speaker 1: did get drafted last year. You could argue Miles Montgomery
- 25:58Speaker 1: was the better player. It might have been close. That's
- 26:00Speaker 1: kind of it for Miles Montgomery. He really didn't do
- 26:03Speaker 1: a lot before twenty twenty five. Jim Miller had like
- 26:06Speaker 1: three years of two to three years of legit production.
- 26:09Speaker 1: So I think that's what you know, jam Miller. And
- 26:13Speaker 1: it's the seventh round, so maybe you should be going
- 26:15Speaker 1: for upside. You could argue, but I think you just
- 26:17Speaker 1: know what you're getting a little more in Jam Miller
- 26:19Speaker 1: versus Miles Montgomery against a weaker schedule. Was that just
- 26:23Speaker 1: kind of like a one off or is that the
- 26:24Speaker 1: player he actually is versus jam Miller multiple years in
- 26:27Speaker 1: the SEC. I think you just know more higher floor,
- 26:30Speaker 1: lower ceiling, I think than Montgomery.
- 26:32Speaker 4: Yeah, but both guys that have kind of squatty frames
- 26:36Speaker 4: right like five ten to ten two oh five and
- 26:39Speaker 4: have some speed and have have some giddea up to them. So,
- 26:43Speaker 4: uh interesting kind of competition I think between them Larison
- 26:48Speaker 4: Trell Jennings, like that's gonna kind of be the summer
- 26:51Speaker 4: at that running back spot. Yeah, I said Larson. I
- 26:56Speaker 4: wonder if Larson's gonna be out there on Saturday. Sometimes
- 26:58Speaker 4: they allow guys that, yeah, you know, we're hurt their
- 27:01Speaker 4: rookie years, basically red shirted their rookie years to practice.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Guys who are trying to make a roster push, like
- 27:06Speaker 1: ye see xavier 'streppa was out there for my for
- 27:08Speaker 1: the Titans.
- 27:09Speaker 3: Oh damn really yeah, poor Ostrepo.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Uh well, I think like John Giles, right, he was
- 27:14Speaker 4: out there last year for the Patriots. Like those those
- 27:16Speaker 4: receivers that were on the practice squad, who was the
- 27:19Speaker 4: other one got of touched on pass from Joe Milton
- 27:22Speaker 4: and uh oh the preseason.
- 27:27Speaker 1: Wow, we're I'm blanking, but I know who you're talking.
- 27:30Speaker 3: We're not doing good today with names.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Okay, next one here, Uh, let's stick with the offense
- 27:36Speaker 4: because I don't want to jump all over the place.
- 27:38Speaker 4: Let's talk about Tanner Arkin. So ten Arkins sixty four,
- 27:44Speaker 4: two hundred and sixty two pounds when you watch his
- 27:46Speaker 4: Tapa Illinois. He's an extra offensive lineman like that. He's
- 27:50Speaker 4: not a pass catcher in my opinion.
- 27:52Speaker 3: I don't like.
- 27:53Speaker 4: I think you could catch passes and little outlets and
- 27:56Speaker 4: stuff underneath the defense if he's wide open.
- 27:58Speaker 3: But I don't think he's really a pass catcher.
- 28:01Speaker 4: I mean to use like a cop of Patriots from
- 28:03Speaker 4: the past, like is he's just kind of the who
- 28:05Speaker 4: man right, like he's sixty four two sixty two, really good.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Blocker his I would even say more Dwayne Allen.
- 28:13Speaker 3: Okay, do you think it's as much juice in the
- 28:15Speaker 3: passing game as Dwayne Allen?
- 28:16Speaker 1: I thought who man had more juice in the passing
- 28:18Speaker 1: game than Dwayne Allen.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I guess maybe Patriots Dwayne Allen like.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Dwayne, That's what I'm saying. Yeah, yeah, that was weird
- 28:23Speaker 1: because the Colts threw the ball a lot and then
- 28:24Speaker 1: ever throw the ball. But I really like every once
- 28:26Speaker 1: in a while who Man would go up and get it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: You forget, remember he moss that guy on the.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Bills vaguely Yeah, okay, I'll take your word for it. Uh.
- 28:35Speaker 4: Some of the blocks though from ark And were really impressive.
- 28:39Speaker 4: You know, like if you close your eyes, you would
- 28:41Speaker 4: think it was like another tackle, you know, out there
- 28:44Speaker 4: reaching on the line of scrimmage or like you and
- 28:46Speaker 4: I had that ability to kind of like reach a
- 28:48Speaker 4: block and then get underneath a guy and kind of
- 28:51Speaker 4: forklift him out of the gap and move him out
- 28:53Speaker 4: of the gap. Some really impressive like upper body power
- 28:56Speaker 4: flexibility to kind of get underneath and leverage and uh,
- 29:00Speaker 4: get underneath guys to create movement. I think he's got
- 29:03Speaker 4: that ability to block in space as well.
- 29:05Speaker 3: You know, he uses athleticism.
- 29:07Speaker 4: One of the better run blocking tight ends in this class.
- 29:11Speaker 4: Just in general, even among the guys that got drafted,
- 29:14Speaker 4: he just doesn't have much receiving upside to his game.
- 29:19Speaker 5: You know.
- 29:19Speaker 3: Illinois, Uh, I want to say, you know.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Like they've had kind of a history of these types
- 29:24Speaker 4: of guys. Tip Raymond.
- 29:26Speaker 3: I feel like he went to Illinois, right, He's like
- 29:28Speaker 3: sort of the the ceiling of.
- 29:31Speaker 1: This because he could, he could play, he catched the ball.
- 29:33Speaker 4: He had, he had a much better athletic profile than
- 29:36Speaker 4: some of these guys. But Illinois seems to like having
- 29:39Speaker 4: like a blocking specialist in line tight end that's basically
- 29:43Speaker 4: an extra offensive lineman, and they kind of trained that
- 29:46Speaker 4: guy and they're they're pretty good at developing that player.
- 29:50Speaker 3: So that's Arkin.
- 29:51Speaker 1: Matt Lacosse also went to Illinois. Okay, it's another one.
- 29:54Speaker 4: Yeah, Tip Raymond's definitely the one I remember the most
- 29:56Speaker 4: that I feel like is the most similar.
- 29:58Speaker 1: To already hear Jeff Cumberl and another guy that was
- 30:01Speaker 1: kind of like that. Oh the who man went to Illinois?
- 30:05Speaker 3: Did? Did? He did?
- 30:06Speaker 1: Not? He did?
- 30:07Speaker 3: I swear to god, I.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Thought I saw that, and I'm like, no, I'm imagining that. No,
- 30:10Speaker 1: he went to Illinois. I totally forgot about that.
- 30:12Speaker 3: See, so they have a history of this.
- 30:14Speaker 4: Yeah, that this is kind of their tight right, like
- 30:17Speaker 4: these two hundred and sixty two hundred and sixty five
- 30:19Speaker 4: pound jumbo tight ends. That's big, that's what they want
- 30:25Speaker 4: to play. Yeah, he's a good blocker. He's a really
- 30:27Speaker 4: good blocker. Now Hunter Henry is on the team, Julian
- 30:31Speaker 4: Hill is on the team, and Eli Raardan's on the team.
- 30:34Speaker 4: And I would also just ad the full back is
- 30:36Speaker 4: part of this. Like the full back in terms of
- 30:39Speaker 4: roster numbers and stuff and number crunching is a part
- 30:42Speaker 4: of the equation.
- 30:43Speaker 3: At tight end.
- 30:44Speaker 4: So are you carrying four tight ends plus a full back?
- 30:48Speaker 4: So basically you're taking up five places in that room.
- 30:51Speaker 4: That just feels like too many, Like it feels like
- 30:54Speaker 4: one too to.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Me, Like Argan would make a lot more sense if
- 30:57Speaker 1: Julian Hill wasn't here. Julian Hill is here, so maybe
- 31:01Speaker 1: like they try to stash Arkin on the practice squad
- 31:03Speaker 1: for a year and then he takes that role over
- 31:04Speaker 1: next year. I know Julian Hill signed a three year contract,
- 31:08Speaker 1: but I think there's it's really only one year deal, right.
- 31:11Speaker 4: Yeah, how about Duprie like where it does? Because Duprie is
- 31:14Speaker 4: kind of similar. I would say to.
- 31:15Speaker 1: Ar no, Hill's two years of guaranteed money. This is
- 31:19Speaker 1: more guarantee money in twenty seven than twenty six.
- 31:20Speaker 4: Like I had all the same thoughts about Dupree this
- 31:23Speaker 4: time last year, Like this is a blocking tight end
- 31:26Speaker 4: that's got size and got but I.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Think Arkin might be a little bit of a better
- 31:30Speaker 1: I think Arkan's better blocker. I think Deprie is a
- 31:31Speaker 1: better receiver, but Arkin's a better blocker.
- 31:33Speaker 3: Yeah, So another one that I liked.
- 31:36Speaker 4: I just don't know if there's an opportunity there with
- 31:38Speaker 4: the numbers on the roster. Let's go to the guards,
- 31:42Speaker 4: and then we'll finish up with the two defensive guys
- 31:45Speaker 4: I had on my list, John Darius Morgan from UAB. Really,
- 31:51Speaker 4: I thought he was pretty twitched up for an undrafted guy,
- 31:54Speaker 4: Like he moves pretty well, smooth mover, good athlete, good
- 31:58Speaker 4: pass protection, ability to read direct and like pass block
- 32:01Speaker 4: one on one, can get out in space on his blocks,
- 32:04Speaker 4: get out in the screen game, all that kind of stuff.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I thought that the you know, some of the issues
- 32:09Speaker 4: that I saw with him are just with his punch.
- 32:11Speaker 4: He's got like a predictable two hand punch. It gets
- 32:13Speaker 4: swiped away and stuff like that by active hands that
- 32:16Speaker 4: he'll have to work on and he's got to get stronger.
- 32:18Speaker 4: But like all these offensive linemen, I feel like we
- 32:20Speaker 4: keep saying the same thing about that. So he's a
- 32:23Speaker 4: guy that when he gets on a base blocker a
- 32:26Speaker 4: double team, I don't know if he's moving people. His
- 32:29Speaker 4: anchor I think is going to be tested at this level.
- 32:32Speaker 4: But he can move man like, he's a twitchy athlete
- 32:35Speaker 4: and he's a good pass blocker.
- 32:36Speaker 1: So his background, I don't know how much he looked
- 32:38Speaker 1: at his background, So he was a left tackle, Yeah,
- 32:42Speaker 1: I believe it. He wasn't great there, and then during
- 32:46Speaker 1: the twenty four season he moved to right guard and
- 32:49Speaker 1: was kind of figuring it out. And then he played
- 32:51Speaker 1: guard for the first time full time in twenty twenty
- 32:53Speaker 1: five and was a lot better. So he's still learning
- 32:57Speaker 1: that position, which goes to some of the stuff that
- 32:59Speaker 1: you said, and yeah, building his body for that position,
- 33:02Speaker 1: but certainly the punch like def but definitely more of
- 33:05Speaker 1: a natural fit there than he was at tackles. So
- 33:08Speaker 1: when a sending player a player that's trending in the
- 33:10Speaker 1: right direction, and yeah, they need you know, he's gonna
- 33:14Speaker 1: be right there in the mix with like Kate Wallace,
- 33:16Speaker 1: McKay Butler, Andrew Rupsich. By the way, I also went
- 33:18Speaker 1: to Culver Stockton. Patriots have two guys from Culver Stockton.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Is really there must be.
- 33:23Speaker 4: Like a coach or something there that you don't have
- 33:26Speaker 4: just two guys that went to Culver stocks Well.
- 33:28Speaker 1: Grouch I think was in Tennessee, was Verable, right, Okay,
- 33:31Speaker 1: so there has to be some sort of connection there,
- 33:34Speaker 1: I would think. So Rupsich, Uh, Yeah, I was in Tennessee,
- 33:38Speaker 1: which is.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Such a random small school.
- 33:40Speaker 1: It really is. Yeah, But no, I I think I
- 33:43Speaker 1: always talk about this, like, if you don't have a
- 33:46Speaker 1: guy that's just been good his whole career, and we're
- 33:48Speaker 1: talking about udfas here, you want somebody that's trending in
- 33:50Speaker 1: the right direction. Yeah, and so Yeah, John Darius Morgan
- 33:53Speaker 1: uh start played four hundred and twenty two snaps that
- 33:55Speaker 1: left tackling twenty four, then moved to guard, then played
- 33:58Speaker 1: the entire season at right guard last year. He's got
- 34:00Speaker 1: good size for it. Again, he's keep poking up. He's
- 34:02Speaker 1: got good size for it. You know. The fact that
- 34:04Speaker 1: he played as well as he did, making that adjustment
- 34:06Speaker 1: so quickly makes me think there's more there to bring
- 34:08Speaker 1: out of him. He's gonna be right there in the
- 34:10Speaker 1: mix with all those other guys, and he is a
- 34:12Speaker 1: real chance to make the team.
- 34:14Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree.
- 34:14Speaker 4: I I the only thing that I was a little
- 34:17Speaker 4: bit wary of. It should add just on the positive
- 34:20Speaker 4: note first too, I thought his Tennessee tape was really solid.
- 34:23Speaker 4: They played Tennessee last year, UAB did, and I thought
- 34:26Speaker 4: he really held up well.
- 34:28Speaker 3: Like there are times where you know there's a lot
- 34:30Speaker 3: going on.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Wrong obviously for UAB, against a much better team. But
- 34:34Speaker 4: you look at it and you see Morgan's kind of
- 34:36Speaker 4: winning his matchup, but everybody else's guy one penalty that Yeah, yeah,
- 34:41Speaker 4: it was pretty solid. H He has some soft edges though,
- 34:45Speaker 4: you know, like is it outside or inside? Like once
- 34:49Speaker 4: guys got on his edge, he had trouble with like
- 34:51Speaker 4: redirecting with power, like coming in through and really like
- 34:55Speaker 4: transitioning and anchoring with power to bring.
- 34:58Speaker 3: How much edge?
- 34:59Speaker 1: How much of that is just he's new to the position.
- 35:01Speaker 4: It could be And like I said, I think that
- 35:03Speaker 4: his hands can be more nuanced to like refit and
- 35:06Speaker 4: get underneath guys and kind of like relatch into guy's
- 35:10Speaker 4: chest because like he'll two hand punch a lot, and
- 35:13Speaker 4: these like good rushers are just swiping it or whatever,
- 35:16Speaker 4: knocking the hands out of the way, and then they're
- 35:18Speaker 4: gonna get on the edge. And he doesn't necessarily have
- 35:21Speaker 4: like the raw power or the mass to just kind
- 35:23Speaker 4: of like wash it down. So those guys are just
- 35:26Speaker 4: getting on his edges and then they're just powering through
- 35:29Speaker 4: the edge. But I didn't see a lot of guys
- 35:30Speaker 4: beat him with speed, Like I didn't see a lot
- 35:32Speaker 4: of guys come across his face or like spin or
- 35:36Speaker 4: anything like that. I thought he was pretty good with
- 35:38Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff. I thought he was pretty
- 35:40Speaker 4: good with line movement. And he's actually like really good
- 35:42Speaker 4: at uh, like looking for work and like finishing. Like
- 35:45Speaker 4: he had a couple of reps when they were running
- 35:47Speaker 4: some of those interior twists against him, where like the
- 35:50Speaker 4: pick player would come to pick him off and he
- 35:53Speaker 4: would just like toss the pick player to the ground
- 35:56Speaker 4: and like just blow.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Up the whole thing.
- 35:57Speaker 4: Yeah, you know, like he's got some of that like
- 36:00Speaker 4: nasty streak to him as well.
- 36:01Speaker 3: I really liked him.
- 36:02Speaker 4: I thought that he was a guy that I you know,
- 36:06Speaker 4: I was surprised, you know, watching his tape that he
- 36:08Speaker 4: that he didn't get drafted.
- 36:09Speaker 3: Honestly, I thought he was solid. And I watched a
- 36:12Speaker 3: lot of those guards in that range of the draft,
- 36:15Speaker 3: you know, late day three guards, and I thought that
- 36:18Speaker 3: he he belonged in that group.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Again, I wonder if just with mys Montgomery, it's a
- 36:22Speaker 1: you like what you see, but it is admittedly a
- 36:24Speaker 1: limited sample size, more limited sample size.
- 36:27Speaker 3: Yeah, sure.
- 36:28Speaker 4: The last one here on the offensive side of them,
- 36:29Speaker 4: when we were to a couple of defensive guys Rizzy
- 36:32Speaker 4: from Florida State Jacob Rizzy.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Basically they're super sub Like he.
- 36:36Speaker 4: Didn't really start a ton of games, but he played
- 36:39Speaker 4: a decent amount of snaps and he basically played all
- 36:41Speaker 4: over the offensive line. You know, I think he's an
- 36:43Speaker 4: interior guy in the pros like I don't. I wouldn't
- 36:45Speaker 4: necessarily say he could play tackle with his movement skills, like,
- 36:49Speaker 4: I just thought he was a little clunky, like a
- 36:51Speaker 4: little segmented in his movements. But then his relative athletics
- 36:54Speaker 4: scorer is RAS was nine point eighty eight out of
- 36:57Speaker 4: ten at the PROA and an elite athletic profile. So
- 37:02Speaker 4: maybe that you know, that's I test versus you know,
- 37:06Speaker 4: combine testing type stuff.
- 37:07Speaker 3: You know you'd be the judge there. He also put
- 37:09Speaker 3: up thirty one reps on the bench like.
- 37:12Speaker 4: He's a strong kid, a decent athlete, good versatility. I
- 37:16Speaker 4: just didn't think that he moved as well on tape
- 37:18Speaker 4: as he did it in his pro day in terms
- 37:20Speaker 4: of the testing. But he's got that versatility and that,
- 37:23Speaker 4: you know, the more you can do at a position
- 37:25Speaker 4: like that, the better.
- 37:26Speaker 1: Reminds me a little bit of Logan Taylor, kind of
- 37:29Speaker 1: like the later version of Logan Taylor where you know
- 37:31Speaker 1: there's value in the versatility athlete. We'll see, We'll see
- 37:36Speaker 1: here he ends up. He might be somebody that just
- 37:37Speaker 1: kind of sticks on the practice squad. Initially, I think
- 37:40Speaker 1: if we're talking about, as you said earlier, Evan, that
- 37:44Speaker 1: who is that guy after Ben Brown? I think you
- 37:46Speaker 1: feel better about John Darius Morgan in that role right now.
- 37:49Speaker 1: But Rizzy, to me, he's the kind of guy you
- 37:51Speaker 1: want to keep around, you want to keep developing, because
- 37:53Speaker 1: that versatility, when you get him where you want him
- 37:55Speaker 1: to be, that versatility will be incredibly valuable.
- 37:58Speaker 4: So I think either one of those guys got a
- 37:59Speaker 4: chains and certainly has a chance to stick on the
- 38:02Speaker 4: practice squad, like you said, and be a developmental player
- 38:05Speaker 4: on the practice squad. Defensively, there was two guys that
- 38:09Speaker 4: I looked at that I thought had a chance David
- 38:14Speaker 4: Blay Khalil Jacobs. These two guys are the only two
- 38:18Speaker 4: guys out of their UDFA class that had right ups
- 38:22Speaker 4: in the Beast, like full write ups, not just height, weight,
- 38:26Speaker 4: speed measurements, full bios and everything. So typically that tells
- 38:33Speaker 4: you that Dane thought they had a chance to get drafted.
- 38:35Speaker 4: So that's why they were that way. So based off
- 38:39Speaker 4: of Dame Brugler and the Beast, these were the two
- 38:42Speaker 4: most talented UDFA signings that they had With Blay, I
- 38:46Speaker 4: think the big question is two hundred and ninety two pounds,
- 38:48Speaker 4: that's what he's listed at six two. That's really small
- 38:52Speaker 4: to play nose tackle at this level. But I thought
- 38:55Speaker 4: that he's pretty densely built, Like he's a pretty compact
- 38:58Speaker 4: build to him.
- 39:00Speaker 3: It's difficult to move.
- 39:01Speaker 4: He's got really good short area quickness, block anticipation, like
- 39:04Speaker 4: he's constantly.
- 39:05Speaker 3: Moving maneuvering around blocks.
- 39:07Speaker 4: Now, he played on that Miami defensive line, obviously a
- 39:11Speaker 4: lot of attention was going in other places. There are
- 39:14Speaker 4: times where the lie the seeds would kind of part
- 39:16Speaker 4: for him because you know, the line is like fanning
- 39:18Speaker 4: out to the more, you know, more dynamic players like
- 39:22Speaker 4: Bain and Mesador. So there's some of that going on
- 39:25Speaker 4: with his game. But I thought he held up pretty
- 39:28Speaker 4: well against some good competition as a two undred and
- 39:31Speaker 4: ninety two pound nose tackle that's not very common.
- 39:34Speaker 1: Yeah, Again, it's just how much weight can he put
- 39:36Speaker 1: on between now and the end of July. That's what
- 39:38Speaker 1: it comes down to me, if he comes into camp
- 39:40Speaker 1: and he's playing at like three ten three fifteen, Yeah, okay,
- 39:44Speaker 1: well three fifteen would be three fifteen is a lot
- 39:46Speaker 1: twenty Pat, right, three three ten I.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Think is realistic three tens in because I'm sure he's
- 39:51Speaker 3: known he's had to put on weight this entire time, right,
- 39:53Speaker 3: so he's not like starting now, I'm running on weight.
- 39:56Speaker 3: But so he's got the makings of that gap shooting
- 40:00Speaker 3: penetrating one technique shade that that might be what they're
- 40:04Speaker 3: gravitating towards more. You know, I don't I think the
- 40:07Speaker 3: days of you're gonna eat blocks and you know, occupy space,
- 40:11Speaker 3: like that's not really how they play anymore on the
- 40:13Speaker 3: defensive line.
- 40:14Speaker 4: Is he a little bit undersized for it? Maybe, but
- 40:17Speaker 4: maybe not in their system, you know, as a guy
- 40:19Speaker 4: that they're gonna like get off the ball and get
- 40:21Speaker 4: up the field. Maybe not as much. Well see, I
- 40:24Speaker 4: mean that was really my big question with him. What
- 40:26Speaker 4: did you think with klil Jacobs?
- 40:28Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean they had him in for thirty visits,
- 40:30Speaker 1: so they're clearly interested a guy I think that has
- 40:32Speaker 1: a really strong special teams makeup, and then he'd be
- 40:35Speaker 1: in that mix competing with with britt In Muma and
- 40:39Speaker 1: those guys for a obiz or for that third linebacker
- 40:44Speaker 1: role after Splaine and Ellis. Yeah, I kind of looked
- 40:49Speaker 1: at him more as like a special teams guy.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Yeah, he kind of reminded me a little bit of Obizar,
- 40:53Speaker 4: Like they're both kind of smaller, you know, sawd off frames,
- 40:56Speaker 4: like shorter arms, things like that, but they can move
- 40:59Speaker 4: and they can run and they go sideline to sideline
- 41:01Speaker 4: pretty well. And you know how that Special Team's background,
- 41:05Speaker 4: it's kind of similar to jam Miller and Miles Montcomery.
- 41:09Speaker 4: Not exactly the same, but kind of similar. So it'd
- 41:11Speaker 4: be interesting so that those are the guys that I had.
- 41:14Speaker 4: Who are your rookie mini camp invites because you went
- 41:17Speaker 4: deeper than I did.
- 41:18Speaker 1: So Yeah, so one is Jordan Kwaikowski, who I kind
- 41:21Speaker 1: of already talked about again. It just flew around the
- 41:25Speaker 1: field at Central Michigan one hundred and eleven tackles, fourteen
- 41:29Speaker 1: for lost, three sacks, three picks, three forced fumbles. You know,
- 41:32Speaker 1: it's a jump in competition with with that kind of production.
- 41:35Speaker 1: But where did Robert S. Blaine come from and went
- 41:40Speaker 1: undrafted in that whole thing. So there he is a
- 41:42Speaker 1: little bit like Robert Splaine needed me. I was a
- 41:44Speaker 1: little surprised he didn't get drafted. And then the other one,
- 41:47Speaker 1: the punter Mitch McCarthy Indiana, like, are they going to
- 41:50Speaker 1: bring in competition for Bryce Beringer this summer for training camp.
- 41:54Speaker 1: McCarthy did have kind of a down year. Last year
- 41:56Speaker 1: in Indiana was a little off compared to three years
- 41:59Speaker 1: at UCF and obviously Indiana, now you're in outdoor, I
- 42:02Speaker 1: mean us outdoors, but you're in these kind of like
- 42:04Speaker 1: wintery conditions, like you'd be in here as opposed to
- 42:06Speaker 1: kicking in South or central Florida, should say. But yeah,
- 42:10Speaker 1: I mean he's a punter. He's here if that feels
- 42:12Speaker 1: like a spot where they might want some competition, so
- 42:14Speaker 1: he goes on the watch list.
- 42:16Speaker 4: I am pleasantly surprised how much the punter conversation has gotten.
- 42:23Speaker 4: We've talked about that because usually when it comes.
- 42:27Speaker 1: To punter people, well, team's good again, so do the details.
- 42:31Speaker 4: But I've gotten email, We get emails about the punter.
- 42:34Speaker 4: Can you believe at the Patriots seven, you know, acquire.
- 42:39Speaker 1: People were furious. Yeah, although for what it's worth, Bearinger
- 42:42Speaker 1: should beat out Mitch McCarthy.
- 42:44Speaker 3: I think it's just a little nudge.
- 42:46Speaker 1: No, I think competition is good, but that's one that
- 42:48Speaker 1: I would think Behinger should win.
- 42:49Speaker 3: Yeah, he should win it, all right.
- 42:51Speaker 4: So that's setting the table udfa's roster, holes that remain
- 42:56Speaker 4: on the team. Anything else you guys want to talk about,
- 42:58Speaker 4: we can open it up now, the calls in the emails.
- 43:02Speaker 3: Let's start with the calls. Now, Patty is an agua.
- 43:04Speaker 3: What's up Patty?
- 43:08Speaker 6: And what's up guy?
- 43:13Speaker 3: All right?
- 43:15Speaker 6: So I just wanted to I kind of had a
- 43:19Speaker 6: I wanted to quibble with Alex just a little bit.
- 43:21Speaker 6: And it's got nothing to do with the UDFA signings.
- 43:27Speaker 6: But last week Alex on on Patriots B he said
- 43:30Speaker 6: that he didn't think that Wes Welker should go into
- 43:32Speaker 6: the Patriots Hall of Fame. A monst. Randy Moss accompanied him,
- 43:36Speaker 6: and you were also talking about planet players. Now brand
- 43:39Speaker 6: that he doesn't have the measurables that he would like,
- 43:43Speaker 6: you know, declare him a planet player. But for me,
- 43:47Speaker 6: like Wes Welker was kind of a one of one player.
- 43:50Speaker 6: I know you could throw out guys like Troy Brown,
- 43:53Speaker 6: Dion Branch, Julian Edelman. But those guys played a lot
- 43:59Speaker 6: of Z too, I mean not a lot, but Wes
- 44:01Speaker 6: primarily played in the slot. I have not looked at it,
- 44:06Speaker 6: but I think if he looked at his game splits,
- 44:08Speaker 6: I would say he's probably ninety percent of the snaps
- 44:11Speaker 6: that he took in the New England Patriots were in
- 44:14Speaker 6: the slot. And I think the only player that he
- 44:16Speaker 6: could really compare him to that came after him was
- 44:19Speaker 6: Danny Amndulla because I don't ever remember any Adula going outside.
- 44:22Speaker 6: And he still is like and I don't see it,
- 44:26Speaker 6: you know, I don't see anybody having the kind of
- 44:28Speaker 6: high volume over the next few years that's going to
- 44:31Speaker 6: break his receptions records. So and I know he gets
- 44:34Speaker 6: a bad rap for the Super Bowl drop, which is
- 44:36Speaker 6: ridiculous that guy. You know, once Moss was shipped out
- 44:40Speaker 6: and it was the two young tight ends, it was
- 44:43Speaker 6: basically on him. You know, he was he was the guy,
- 44:46Speaker 6: he was the go to guy. He was Brady's binky.
- 44:49Speaker 6: And yeah, I mean, to me, like he gets he
- 44:53Speaker 6: gets an unfair snub just because of one stupid drop.
- 44:56Speaker 6: But I wanted to kind of talk about like the
- 45:00Speaker 6: U dfhase Evan your list real.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Quick, Patty on that, I'm just love you. Wes Welker
- 45:05Speaker 1: is not a planet player. So the planet player thing,
- 45:07Speaker 1: that's it. That's an old Bill Parcells term. It literally
- 45:11Speaker 1: refers to the idea that there's only so many human
- 45:15Speaker 1: beings of a certain size and athletic ability on the
- 45:18Speaker 1: planet and that when you get a chance to drafting,
- 45:20Speaker 1: you draft him. I don't think Wes Welker's physical makeup
- 45:23Speaker 1: was rare. He was unbelievably skilled, But like he's not
- 45:28Speaker 1: Wes Welker is not a planet player.
- 45:31Speaker 6: I'm just saying as far as like the position that
- 45:33Speaker 6: he played, like he redefined the slot position. So sure,
- 45:36Speaker 6: he's not a planet player, but he is a one
- 45:38Speaker 6: of one type of player, you know. And I mean
- 45:42Speaker 6: before him, it was Wayne Corbett, and he took what
- 45:44Speaker 6: Wayne Corbett was doing with the Jets and he just
- 45:47Speaker 6: I mean he kicked the door in with it. As
- 45:49Speaker 6: far as being a slatter receiver. So the UDF phase,
- 45:54Speaker 6: that was a great list. This is kind of where
- 45:56Speaker 6: I'm at, and I'm gonna circle this around to aj Brown.
- 45:59Speaker 6: This is this is kind of the reason why I
- 46:02Speaker 6: don't want to give up a for or I would
- 46:04Speaker 6: I'd be a little bit sick to my stomach. They
- 46:07Speaker 6: gave up a first round pick, whether it's twenty seven
- 46:09Speaker 6: or twenty eight, for AJ Brown, And the fact is,
- 46:12Speaker 6: like the you reeled up safety, linebacker, interior, offensive line,
- 46:16Speaker 6: Like we don't have the depth just yet to be
- 46:19Speaker 6: giving up like those those premium asset picks. And I,
- 46:25Speaker 6: you know, I hate to be dooming gloombug. Let's say,
- 46:28Speaker 6: let's say you do give up a twenty eight first
- 46:30Speaker 6: round pick. What happens in twenty seven if our quarterback
- 46:33Speaker 6: goes down and that turns into a top ten, top
- 46:36Speaker 6: five pick. I mean you just you basically gave up
- 46:39Speaker 6: a top ten pick for AJ Brown, you know, And
- 46:42Speaker 6: that's I cannot rationalize at my brain. I wouldn't mind
- 46:46Speaker 6: like a second whatever. I know he's going to be
- 46:51Speaker 6: here one way or the other. But I'll just be
- 46:54Speaker 6: the one guy on record saying that I don't want
- 46:57Speaker 6: to trade a first round pick for him. That's all
- 46:58Speaker 6: I got, guys.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 47:00Speaker 4: So I think a lot of people are in that
- 47:01Speaker 4: boat at this point that they don't want to trade
- 47:03Speaker 4: a first round pick for AJ Brown.
- 47:07Speaker 3: I agree to an extent.
- 47:08Speaker 4: I think my biggest concern because, like I think the
- 47:12Speaker 4: if you don't want to trade a first round pick
- 47:14Speaker 4: for a J. Brown, then you have to come to
- 47:16Speaker 4: terms with the fact that you might not get AJ Brown, right,
- 47:19Speaker 4: Like that's just the God's honest truth of it.
- 47:22Speaker 3: And I think my one concern about.
- 47:26Speaker 4: Playing hardball and drawing a hard line on the first
- 47:29Speaker 4: round pick and actually maybe even taking yourself out of
- 47:32Speaker 4: it if that's what the price is. You don't want
- 47:36Speaker 4: to invite regression for Drake May, right, And so does
- 47:39Speaker 4: not having and maybe Romeo Dobs is good enough that
- 47:43Speaker 4: they avoid this, But does not having AJ Brown or
- 47:48Speaker 4: a caliber of a player of that caliber in their
- 47:52Speaker 4: passing arsenal? Does that put too much stress on Drake
- 47:56Speaker 4: May to elevate what's around him and make the whole
- 48:00Speaker 4: thing better? And does he take a step back as
- 48:03Speaker 4: a result of there's just not enough around him for
- 48:06Speaker 4: him to do that?
- 48:08Speaker 3: And that's a developmental thing.
- 48:10Speaker 4: Like I still feel that Drake May is in a
- 48:14Speaker 4: developmental phase of his career. He's only going into his
- 48:17Speaker 4: third season in the NFL. We're not at the point
- 48:19Speaker 4: yet where he's bulletproof, where he's like a Maine man
- 48:22Speaker 4: that we can just sit here and say we could
- 48:26Speaker 4: trade coordinators, we could trade receivers, we could trade whatever,
- 48:30Speaker 4: and it won't matter. Like I don't know if for
- 48:31Speaker 4: a fully there yet with Drake May so to not
- 48:37Speaker 4: give up what's necessary to get AJ Brown. I do
- 48:40Speaker 4: think that you're running a little bit of a risk of.
- 48:43Speaker 3: Is there now too much pressure on Drake May to
- 48:46Speaker 3: make water wine out of water out of wine whatever
- 48:48Speaker 3: the saying is. I don't know. Maybe I'm looking too
- 48:52Speaker 3: much into that, but I just I want to give
- 48:54Speaker 3: Drake May. I don't want him to go backwards at
- 48:57Speaker 3: any time.
- 48:57Speaker 1: No, I think that's a very fair point. And to
- 48:59Speaker 1: what Patty said, And look, Patty, I'm with you in
- 49:01Speaker 1: that I really don't want them to give up a
- 49:04Speaker 1: first round pick here. I don't think they should have to.
- 49:07Speaker 1: I've said this before. Dare Howie Roseman to bring AJ
- 49:10Speaker 1: Brown in a camp and see how that goes, and say,
- 49:14Speaker 1: if you want your second round pick, it's right here,
- 49:17Speaker 1: ready to give it to you. But you bring that
- 49:19Speaker 1: guy in a camp with all the wide receivers you've
- 49:21Speaker 1: brought in when he thought he was gonna be out,
- 49:23Speaker 1: which has kind of been reported that he maybe knows
- 49:25Speaker 1: he's not gonna be there. Yeah, and see see how
- 49:28Speaker 1: that goes, see if that's worth it, or maybe, like
- 49:31Speaker 1: I would even do Okay, it's a conditional for it.
- 49:34Speaker 1: It's a second that becomes a first if Patriots make
- 49:36Speaker 1: the playoff like that kind of thing. I'm just I
- 49:38Speaker 1: don't want them to give up the out right first.
- 49:40Speaker 1: That being said, to your point, it's ultimately an investment
- 49:44Speaker 1: in Drake May and if it's twenty twenty eight first,
- 49:46Speaker 1: you're gonna have a chance to kind of recoup some
- 49:47Speaker 1: of that value.
- 49:49Speaker 4: That was the other thing I was gonna say, Yeah,
- 49:51Speaker 4: I'm okay with the twenty twenty eight.
- 49:53Speaker 1: I'm more I would rather a twenty seven second than
- 49:56Speaker 1: a twenty eight first. Sure, but I would much twenty
- 50:00Speaker 1: eight first than twenty seven first.
- 50:02Speaker 4: Twenty eight first to me, Now you're talking about that
- 50:05Speaker 4: pick cashing in two seasons from me? Yeah, so you
- 50:08Speaker 4: it's not about what the Patriots would do in twenty
- 50:11Speaker 4: twenty seven, right, It's about what the Patriots would do
- 50:13Speaker 4: in twenty twenty eight. And if by twenty twenty eight
- 50:16Speaker 4: they haven't continued to build, that would be a whole
- 50:19Speaker 4: other offseason on top of the one they just had, right, Like,
- 50:22Speaker 4: I feel like they're gonna be in pretty good pay.
- 50:24Speaker 1: And to Patty's other point about like this team doesn't
- 50:26Speaker 1: have the depth, I don't disagree with that, but.
- 50:29Speaker 3: I well, then you have the whole twenty twenty seven draft.
- 50:32Speaker 1: It's also you're not you. Your first round pick is
- 50:34Speaker 1: not a depth pick, I would hope not. Like that's
- 50:37Speaker 1: a pick you're using for now. You could argue, well,
- 50:39Speaker 1: all right, so it's an even better player, yeah, but
- 50:41Speaker 1: you're still getting aj Brown. Like, I don't worry about
- 50:44Speaker 1: them not being able to fill out the roster because
- 50:47Speaker 1: they lose that pick. To me, it's like what happens
- 50:49Speaker 1: if Campbell or Lomu don't hit or you know, okay,
- 50:53Speaker 1: they move on from Carlton Davis, What are they doing
- 50:55Speaker 1: at the other corner oppos a Gonzalz or if they
- 50:57Speaker 1: don't play Gonzales or like that kind of thing, right, Like,
- 50:59Speaker 1: it's that picks more about star power that than anything else.
- 51:04Speaker 1: But that's also like you can address that in free agency.
- 51:06Speaker 1: I guess I really feel.
- 51:09Speaker 4: Like the the twenty eight to twenty eight first yeah,
- 51:14Speaker 4: might be where this ends up. Because I think the
- 51:16Speaker 4: Patriots are going to draw a hard line about their
- 51:19Speaker 4: first in twenty twenty seven, as I think how he's
- 51:22Speaker 4: going to want to save face and say that he
- 51:24Speaker 4: got a first round pick for AJ Brown.
- 51:26Speaker 1: Do the conditional? That's and again, So you.
- 51:28Speaker 3: Would you rather do a twenty twenty seven conditional or.
- 51:31Speaker 1: A twenty twenty eight conditional?
- 51:32Speaker 3: So you want to do twenty eight?
- 51:33Speaker 1: Can I guess you're saying twenty seven conditional or twenty
- 51:36Speaker 1: eight first? Yeah, twenty seven conditional because I think they're
- 51:39Speaker 1: going to go back to the playoffs. I think they're
- 51:41Speaker 1: gonna go back to the playoffs. And if it's you're
- 51:43Speaker 1: giving up the twenty something if pick for AJ Brown,
- 51:45Speaker 1: I can live with Thatah. On the flip side, if
- 51:49Speaker 1: they don't make it back to the playoffs, this is
- 51:51Speaker 1: a really good draft. I would love to be picking
- 51:53Speaker 1: on the top fifteen of this draft. And if you
- 51:55Speaker 1: give up the second, but the second is you know
- 51:59Speaker 1: in the forties, I can live with that.
- 52:02Speaker 4: So I'm interested to see what the terms would be there,
- 52:04Speaker 4: because I haven't heard a lot of trading a conditional
- 52:09Speaker 4: pick that's conditioned on the team's success. That's fair, but
- 52:13Speaker 4: you hear a lot of this pick will become a fifth,
- 52:17Speaker 4: will become a sixth, will become a fifth if he
- 52:19Speaker 4: plays x amount of snaps, or this pick will become
- 52:22Speaker 4: that if he catches, you know, if he if he
- 52:25Speaker 4: has a Pro Bowl season or a thousand yards.
- 52:27Speaker 3: But it's all individual performance. I don't know.
- 52:31Speaker 4: If there's restrictions on conditions about team success.
- 52:36Speaker 1: A couple things on that as I try to find
- 52:38Speaker 1: the examples of this.
- 52:39Speaker 3: Maybe with quarterbacks. Maybe quarterbacks have.
- 52:41Speaker 1: Moved like that if you tie it to AJ Brown stats.
- 52:45Speaker 1: Is there a world where a J. Brown has like
- 52:47Speaker 1: twelve hundred yards and they don't make the playoffs?
- 52:49Speaker 3: Probably not right, or at least are out of the
- 52:52Speaker 3: top ten of the draft, right, Like.
- 52:56Speaker 1: I feel like I've seen and I think this was
- 52:58Speaker 1: for a quarterback. I might be imagining this. Don't hold
- 53:01Speaker 1: me to this. I'm trying to find it. Where the
- 53:03Speaker 1: condition is playoff games played for the player.
- 53:06Speaker 3: They could do it that way. So it's been an
- 53:08Speaker 3: individual conditions. Does that like count you know?
- 53:13Speaker 1: I I I don't know. I don't know. That's what
- 53:15Speaker 1: I do think there's been somewhere It's like if the
- 53:17Speaker 1: team now those I think we're done at the trade deadline,
- 53:22Speaker 1: not now, So that obviously changes because if you're doing
- 53:25Speaker 1: that at the trade deadline, or if you're training a
- 53:28Speaker 1: player to a team that's like seven and five, whatever
- 53:32Speaker 1: week the trade deadline is, they keep moving it. Like
- 53:34Speaker 1: you're like, Okay, I feel pretty good about that versus
- 53:36Speaker 1: everybody's O and O. But like, yeah, I can't remember
- 53:40Speaker 1: exactly how work. I do think there's been somewhere. It's
- 53:42Speaker 1: been team success though, But I think you're right.
- 53:45Speaker 4: For obvious reason, we'll be talking a lot of Celtics,
- 53:47Speaker 4: you and I lately. Yeah, the NBA is filled with
- 53:50Speaker 4: pick protection.
- 53:51Speaker 1: So I never want to see the NFL do. Protected
- 53:53Speaker 1: picks are stupid?
- 53:55Speaker 4: No, And now the Toronto Maple Leafs just got the
- 53:59Speaker 4: draft lot totally rigged for them to get the number
- 54:02Speaker 4: one pick, and the Bruins lost. They're the chance at
- 54:05Speaker 4: the Leaf's first round pick because of a pick protection
- 54:08Speaker 4: that doesn't happen in the NFL. That's not I actually
- 54:11Speaker 4: think there's a rule against picks pick pretention trades. But
- 54:15Speaker 4: you could maybe circumvent that rule by saying, if we
- 54:19Speaker 4: make the playoffs or put a gaudy total on AJ
- 54:23Speaker 4: Brown's statistical output that if he hits a thousand yards,
- 54:28Speaker 4: it becomes a first round pick in twenty twenty seven.
- 54:31Speaker 3: Most likely.
- 54:32Speaker 4: If he hits a thousand yards, we can probably deduce
- 54:34Speaker 4: that they're going to the playoffs or they're a at
- 54:36Speaker 4: least above five hundred football team, that they're out of
- 54:40Speaker 4: the top ten or top twelve with the draft. Okay,
- 54:43Speaker 4: I mean maybe you could try to be sneaky about
- 54:45Speaker 4: it that way.
- 54:46Speaker 1: I'm not sure this is really hard to find because
- 54:49Speaker 1: everything that comes up is compensatory picks. If anybody has
- 54:53Speaker 1: the part of the rule book that addresses conditional draft picks, I.
- 54:56Speaker 4: Feel like Miguel would be would be good at this.
- 54:59Speaker 4: All right, Le's get these last couple of phones that
- 55:01Speaker 4: we got to take a break. Sean is in Vancouver.
- 55:04Speaker 3: What's up? Sean?
- 55:06Speaker 6: Yeah?
- 55:07Speaker 2: And I like year takes in terms of the needs.
- 55:10Speaker 2: But in terms of the safety, linebacker, and guard, I
- 55:15Speaker 2: see the Patriots having those as depth so they if
- 55:19Speaker 2: they don't get injured, it'll be okay. And then there's
- 55:22Speaker 2: there might be a rookie or some free agents who
- 55:27Speaker 2: can play the spots so they can see. But in
- 55:29Speaker 2: terms of the nose tackle, they don't have anyone who
- 55:31Speaker 2: has the size on the roster to be that run
- 55:35Speaker 2: stopping no soacker, that Tonga replacement. So I agree with
- 55:38Speaker 2: you about Takwan Jones, But what do you think of
- 55:41Speaker 2: Kaitlin Saunders or does Mike Panell have anything left?
- 55:44Speaker 3: I'll leave you with that.
- 55:45Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that that's a fair point about the
- 55:48Speaker 4: nose tackle. I thought that they would draft the nose tackle. Yeah,
- 55:51Speaker 4: because there's just so many in this draft, they didn't
- 55:54Speaker 4: go that direction. I find it interesting that we're so
- 56:01Speaker 4: sort of preconditioned to think about nose tackle as this
- 56:05Speaker 4: value player because of the guys that.
- 56:06Speaker 3: Have come through here.
- 56:07Speaker 4: Obviously you know Vince wilforp being the biggest one, but
- 56:11Speaker 4: even guys like Alan Branch, like hires Tonga last year
- 56:14Speaker 4: as a really good year, Like they've had success with
- 56:16Speaker 4: nose tackles here, there's no doubt about it.
- 56:18Speaker 1: They struggled up the run of times last year, so
- 56:20Speaker 1: you want him to stay committed. I didn't realize Kalin
- 56:22Speaker 1: Saunders was unsigned. I absolutely take him.
- 56:25Speaker 4: It seems like they feel and this is just based
- 56:28Speaker 4: off of their movements on the edge, it feels like
- 56:31Speaker 4: they felt like the run defense was lacking more on
- 56:34Speaker 4: the edge of the defense than it was through the
- 56:35Speaker 4: middle of the defense.
- 56:36Speaker 1: Yeah, but that was with Tonga. You've now lost Tonga,
- 56:38Speaker 1: who's a big part of the run defense.
- 56:40Speaker 3: Fair enough, but did you see that video of Chase On.
- 56:44Speaker 3: Chaseon did like a oh yeah.
- 56:46Speaker 1: They wanted.
- 56:49Speaker 4: Signed Draymont Jones, who I think is marginally better against
- 56:52Speaker 4: the run again than Chase On, to be frank, but
- 56:55Speaker 4: maybe a little bit better. And then they drafted Acts
- 56:57Speaker 4: who was obviously a very good run play. Yeah, so
- 57:00Speaker 4: they definitely felt like they needed to be sturdier out
- 57:03Speaker 4: on the edges.
- 57:04Speaker 3: David is in Virginia. What's up, David?
- 57:07Speaker 7: Hey, guys, thanks for taking my call. I'm on a
- 57:09Speaker 7: long time listener, first time call her.
- 57:12Speaker 6: Thanks a question.
- 57:14Speaker 7: I've got a question and a content request. So I
- 57:17Speaker 7: haven't heard a catch twenty two caliber rundown of what
- 57:21Speaker 7: the other AfD East teams did in the draft. You know,
- 57:25Speaker 7: I think you guys even talk a little bit about
- 57:27Speaker 7: the Jets just because they had such a haul because
- 57:29Speaker 7: they're you know, replacing all the good players on their team.
- 57:31Speaker 1: But I'd love to hear your take on the.
- 57:34Speaker 7: Rest of the FC East that's my question for my
- 57:38Speaker 7: content request. I'd love to hear you guys do a
- 57:41Speaker 7: little self scouting on your performance on your draft projection,
- 57:48Speaker 7: so you know, take a two year look or three
- 57:52Speaker 7: year look back and look at your notes and just
- 57:54Speaker 7: sort of see how you did, maybe score it somehow
- 57:57Speaker 7: and make it into a competition. I think that would
- 57:59Speaker 7: be great fun.
- 58:00Speaker 8: Thanks.
- 58:01Speaker 3: Thanks for they called David. Thanks for listening. I appreciate it.
- 58:04Speaker 4: I definitely look back at my draft stuff every year
- 58:08Speaker 4: and try to learn from mistakes, and like I have
- 58:12Speaker 4: a million of them, so like you try to learn
- 58:15Speaker 4: from that. Certainly the rest of the AFC's is a
- 58:18Speaker 4: good one. Like maybe that sounds like a great thing
- 58:20Speaker 4: to do once we get through this like spring practice
- 58:23Speaker 4: period when it gets really dead. I think that's a
- 58:26Speaker 4: great opportunity to do that. We have a couple of
- 58:29Speaker 4: emails after the break, one topic I want to hit on,
- 58:33Speaker 4: and I think that'll be interesting. So we'll be right
- 58:36Speaker 4: back and we'll talk to you soon.

- 1:01:09Speaker 3: this is a Patriots show. I get that it's a
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: middle of the off season and this guy right here,
- 1:01:15Speaker 3: just him and Fred just just needle away.
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I mean, the wild Celtics takes.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: How do you how could a thirty seven year old
- 1:01:24Speaker 3: Joe Missoula be considered a seasoned coach because he's coached
- 1:01:28Speaker 3: in the playoffs four years in a row.
- 1:01:30Speaker 1: He would have a championship.
- 1:01:31Speaker 4: Okay, so that makes him now all of a sudden,
- 1:01:33Speaker 4: he has as much experience in the NBA as some
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: of these VENs.
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: But you're acting like he's doing this all for the
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: first time. It's I don't say it's all new to him.
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I didn't say it's kind of what your point was.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: I brought up Nick Nurse and Tom Thibodeau, who have
- 1:01:46Speaker 4: all been coaching like career coaches, like Tom Thibodeaux, coach
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: was on the eight Celtics coaching staff, because twenty years ago.
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: The point was, is Joe First of all, Nick Nurse
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: has only been an NBA head coach twenty eighteen.
- 1:02:00Speaker 4: Yeah, but how long has he been coaching in professional sports?
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: Professional sports since twenty thirteen. Okay, so that's that's I
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: don't know what some of these other words.
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: Going by the college decade, Mizulo went from Manadoka's like
- 1:02:13Speaker 4: third assistant to the head coach four years ago. You
- 1:02:17Speaker 4: don't for four years for playoff series, he's like a
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: he won a championship.
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: He's not in experience. He's not in experience. Well, then,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: so they.
- 1:02:28Speaker 3: Didn't say he was in experienced. I said he wasn't seasoned.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: There's that same note.
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: So then he doesn't get any credit for twenty four
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: because he didn't know what he was doing right, he
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: was in it. He was unseasoned. That was just the
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: players being great, and we we don't. We won't credit
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: him for that. Then, Okay, you know how I feel
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: about coaching in the NBA. I still feel as though,
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: and I feel strongly about this, about that sport in particular,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: it's the least important coaching sports. I think pro sports,
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: a great coach does less to elevate, but a bad
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: coach can get in the way more.
- 1:03:00Speaker 3: I think that there's it's a five on five game
- 1:03:04Speaker 3: where the stars are the guys driving.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: I just think saying Joe Miszoola is unseasoned when he's
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: been in the playoffs each the last four years and
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: has been to a championship. The guy under selling it
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: a little.
- 1:03:14Speaker 3: Bit, the guy that he lost to last year.
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: Yeah, was the.
- 1:03:18Speaker 4: Top assistant on the two thousand and eight Boston Celtics.
- 1:03:23Speaker 3: Two thousand and eight, we were still in high school.
- 1:03:26Speaker 3: It was twenty years ago. Like this guy just started
- 1:03:30Speaker 3: coaching the Celtics as the head coach of the Celtics
- 1:03:32Speaker 3: four years ago.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Like Joe Mizzoola has coached in about fifty playoff games.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: That's not nothing.
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: I didn't say it was nothing.
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: You kind of said it was nothing.
- 1:03:44Speaker 10: I didn't know towards the side of nothing.
- 1:03:47Speaker 3: I said that he wasn't a seasoned coach because he's not.
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: You said that as a reason for their season.
- 1:03:54Speaker 10: Coach can suck too, like season coaches can suck too.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: Really, but how many playoff games rivers coach?
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: That's a season's coach.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: How's that going?
- 1:04:05Speaker 3: Not great? He probably knows a thing or two about
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: blowing three one leads. He did it plenty, so like.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: I I get it, But I just I just think
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: we're past the point with Missoula of give him time
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: and he'll figure it out.
- 1:04:17Speaker 3: He's had I didn't say I didn't say that as kind.
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: Of what you're argument. I forget how much of this
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: conversation we had off the air versus on the air.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: That's kind of what you were saying.
- 1:04:27Speaker 4: I was saying that in order to like get what
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: they need if they were to replace Miszula, Like you're
- 1:04:34Speaker 4: going the other direction, Like you're going like a lifer,
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: Like you're gonna you're gonna get a guy that has
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: been a coach for a long.
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: Time, because I brought up Sam Cassell, all right, fair.
- 1:04:44Speaker 4: Yeah, like Sam Cassell has never been a coach in
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: the NBA, but again, like a head coach obviously.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: I also think there'd be something for a young coach
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: with upside who's just gonna be more of a motivator
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: and not get in the way as much strategically. But
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of lifers that can't win
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: in the playoffs.
- 1:04:59Speaker 9: Though, Yeah, you feel this way at all about NFL coaches,
- 1:05:02Speaker 9: Like do they have to have the seasoning?
- 1:05:04Speaker 10: Like how season does an NFL coach have to be?
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: How season is Kyle Shanahan very Kyle Shanaman was born
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: into it.
- 1:05:13Speaker 3: His dad is Mike Shannistad going, well, what do you mean?
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: Like it just that was a silly thing to say.
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: He came out of the woman was on the sideline
- 1:05:21Speaker 3: with the headset on, Like what do you mean?
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: How's that going in the playoffs?
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: Okay? But like that doesn't make a difference, Like that's
- 1:05:26Speaker 3: I'm not saying that.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: I just wanted to bring up. Okay, of course you did.
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: I think they answer your question. I think it depends
- 1:05:34Speaker 4: on the team, Like it depends on the pulse of
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: the team. Like when you have a team, uh, like
- 1:05:39Speaker 4: the Celtics who just like basically, uh, what's the word
- 1:05:45Speaker 4: I'm looking for?
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: They they play with their food, right, like.
- 1:05:49Speaker 4: They they get into these series, they play with their food.
- 1:05:52Speaker 3: They blow big leads.
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: Who's that reflective of?
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Can you just let me finish mister Needler over there?
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: And so like they like to me, if they're gonna
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: let go of Missoula, then they need somebody that when
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: that they start letting go of the rope.
- 1:06:06Speaker 4: And in these games where they have these big leads,
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: is gonna call a time out and say nuh, like.
- 1:06:11Speaker 3: We're not cut the crap.
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: But I don't think I think being a motivator like
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: that and having your finger on the pulse if anything like,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: you can definitely pick that up as an assistant for sure.
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: So I don't think that that's that that that's predietd
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: by experience.
- 1:06:27Speaker 4: If they're gonna make a change, which they're not, but
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: if they're gonna make a change, and this goes back
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: to AS's question about football, I think it depends on
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: the type of team that you have.
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: Teams like the Patriots.
- 1:06:37Speaker 4: Last year that were inexperienced and didn't really have a
- 1:06:40Speaker 4: young players in big positions and didn't have a ton
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: of playoff experience, they probably needed a Mike Rabel that
- 1:06:46Speaker 4: had coached before in the league, that had success before
- 1:06:49Speaker 4: as a player and a coach, and had this proven
- 1:06:51Speaker 4: track record and resume. I look at Joe Missoula as
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: a guy that was a really good, like talent developer,
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: like when the Jays were younger, yeah, and when the
- 1:07:01Speaker 4: guy these players that are, you know, playing big minutes
- 1:07:03Speaker 4: for the Celtics now we're younger players, those guys can
- 1:07:07Speaker 4: really he can develop players like that. Is he a
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: playoff coach?
- 1:07:12Speaker 10: Like?
- 1:07:12Speaker 4: Is he a coach that's gonna get into a playoff series,
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: get a couple games in because game three is always
- 1:07:19Speaker 4: like the tilt, right, that's always usually the tilt of
- 1:07:21Speaker 4: a series. Like, is he going to get into a
- 1:07:23Speaker 4: couple of games and then realize, okay, like this is
- 1:07:26Speaker 4: what the other team is doing, we need to press
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: these three buttons to keep us going. Or is he
- 1:07:32Speaker 4: more of like, you know, sort of the holistic approach
- 1:07:35Speaker 4: of like developing and that sort of thing. I think
- 1:07:39Speaker 4: he's definitely more of like the talent developer than he
- 1:07:42Speaker 4: is like the maestro.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: And I think this team.
- 1:07:45Speaker 4: With the Jays ten years into their NBA careers, like
- 1:07:48Speaker 4: they might need the guy that's gonna make the end
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: game adjustments, not the guy.
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: I don't think that that's a guy. I don't think
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: that that prediticates experience to your point, Ben Johnson, I
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: know we're crossing sports here, but Ben Johnson was wasn't
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: he kind of that guy that you're describing the football
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: equivalent of that the maestro? Yeah, didn't have playoff experience.
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: Did a pretty good job there in Chicago.
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: He called plays in the playoffs. Though for Detroit that's true.
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: Well, I mean in the NBA, this is where it's
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: imperfect because we don't necessarily know the assistants roles as
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: strongly defined as they are in football. Yeah, but like
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: Sam Cassell's not just sitting there doing nothing, these assistants
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: aren't just sitting there doing nothing. They all have roles.
- 1:08:27Speaker 4: If there's somethings were to move on from Missoula, and
- 1:08:30Speaker 4: I like Sam Canssell.
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: I think he's a good He's going to be a
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: good coach today.
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: I do.
- 1:08:33Speaker 4: If they move on from Missoula, then I think they
- 1:08:35Speaker 4: need to hire like a main brand coach.
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: I like that.
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: And I think we were texting about this earlier, like
- 1:08:41Speaker 1: could they find a first time coach they like, whether
- 1:08:44Speaker 1: it's Sam Cassell somebody else? And then which Van Gundy
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: wasn't that was on I was twenty four right when
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: they won the championship and he was that guy like
- 1:08:51Speaker 1: we talked about with Sean McVay having his I can't
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: do names today. Wade Phillips is Wade Phillips. Can you
- 1:08:59Speaker 1: find and if you're not bringing that guy in his
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: head coaches at Sam Cassel and then you find the
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: Van Gundy, the Wade Phillips they whatever, or do you
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: just find that guy for Miszula, because clearly that helped
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: in twenty four when they won.
- 1:09:11Speaker 4: I kind of wonder if that's where we're headed with this,
- 1:09:13Speaker 4: and I know that people will There are probably people
- 1:09:15Speaker 4: that are pissed that were talking about Sportsman. All is
- 1:09:19Speaker 4: all I've been thinking about since they lost Game seven
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: is the Boston Celtics.
- 1:09:22Speaker 3: So sorry, but it.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: Came right here from writing about the press conference.
- 1:09:27Speaker 4: I based off of Brad Stevens's comments today where he
- 1:09:32Speaker 4: did not seem thrilled about the job the coaching staff
- 1:09:35Speaker 4: did no in the playoff series. I do think that
- 1:09:38Speaker 4: there's a chance that they hired like Tom Tibbodaux, who
- 1:09:42Speaker 4: is not coaching right now.
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: I forgot Tibdau doesn't have a job.
- 1:09:46Speaker 3: Yeah, he doesn't have a job. He obviously has been
- 1:09:48Speaker 3: on the Celtics bench before. Is a guy that is
- 1:09:53Speaker 3: kind of known for being a little bit more of
- 1:09:54Speaker 3: a tactician, certainly on the defensive side.
- 1:09:56Speaker 4: He designed the oait Celtics defense. He was like their
- 1:09:59Speaker 4: defensive coordinator on that team.
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: I wish basketball teams did that.
- 1:10:03Speaker 3: He basically was that.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: I know, but I wish we got the titles so
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: we knew he would make it more interesting to talk
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: about this stuff. And I know people who followed really
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: hardcore probably know.
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: But the way that that eight team was looked at
- 1:10:14Speaker 4: ye was Doc Rivers was like the motivator.
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: He was the mall cop.
- 1:10:19Speaker 4: He was like negotiating with Dan Campbell. Yeah, he was,
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: you know, getting the big three to like play nice
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: in the sandbox. And then Tom Thibodeau was drawing up
- 1:10:29Speaker 4: Ben n defense. Yeah, like text Winter to Phil Jackson,
- 1:10:33Speaker 4: right like that, that sort of thing. Maybe I don't
- 1:10:36Speaker 4: know if it's Thibodeau, maybe it is, like maybe.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: That's what coaches are available.
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: But he I know he's available.
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: You know, I thought Mike Malone, who's now I think
- 1:10:46Speaker 4: he took the North Carolina job, so like he was available,
- 1:10:49Speaker 4: I thought he would be. He used to coach for
- 1:10:50Speaker 4: the Nuggets when the Nuggets the title with a couple
- 1:10:53Speaker 4: of years ago.
- 1:10:54Speaker 3: Like you know, guys like that I wanted to do
- 1:10:57Speaker 3: with Doc Rivers.
- 1:10:58Speaker 4: Yeah, that's ship has sailed. But you know, somebody like
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: that Vogel out there. He was kicking around with the
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: Lakers and stuff like that. I don't know if he's
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: his teams.
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: Are always scrappy. Did he ever win a title.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: I think he might have been on the bubble Lakers.
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right, but his team's always tough to play.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: He is a Mavericks assistant. Yeah, so he's not out there.
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: So maybe something like that would make a lot of sense,
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: you know, as somebody that could help Joe.
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: He's literally he was hired as a head coaching consultant
- 1:11:27Speaker 1: for Jason Kidd and Dallas. So that's that exact thing.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: So that's your Celtics in football. Thank you for letting
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: us do that.
- 1:11:35Speaker 3: Just a brutal, brutal end to it, like that.
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: Game ended, Like we've texted way more about basketball than football.
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: I think, yeah, listen, we could probably do like a
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: four hour basketball show right now.
- 1:11:47Speaker 4: I uh, I'm a I'm a proud Green Teamer and
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: you really are. And even the Green teamers right now
- 1:11:56Speaker 4: are mad at what just happened. And when that happens,
- 1:12:01Speaker 4: I think that's when the organization starts to feel pressure
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: because if you start losing us, Yeah, if you start
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: losing the Green teamers, the long time season ticket holders,
- 1:12:11Speaker 4: the Bill Simmonses of the world, you know, like those people,
- 1:12:15Speaker 4: that's when it starts to get dicey for the Boston
- 1:12:17Speaker 4: Celtics because we are extremely loyal. It it's hard to
- 1:12:21Speaker 4: this is the first time, and they've had some bad
- 1:12:23Speaker 4: playoff exits. This is the first time where I really
- 1:12:26Speaker 4: am on.
- 1:12:26Speaker 3: The fence about Missoula like that. I've never gotten any It.
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: Even took you because like after the game, you really
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: weren't and it took you a couple of days to
- 1:12:33Speaker 1: get there. He usually does, I process, that's true. I
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: remember you were in denial about.
- 1:12:38Speaker 3: The date of injury. To be fair, I was right
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: about that.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: You were kind of right. They were won fifty six games, definitely,
- 1:12:44Speaker 1: I remember because remember it took them like a couple hours,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: a couple like it was a day and change to announce.
- 1:12:49Speaker 3: You go through why.
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: Haven't they reported the surgery? And I remember one point
- 1:12:52Speaker 1: you text me like, what if they're not announcing it
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: because he just sprained his ankle and he's fine because
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: he's Captain America.
- 1:12:57Speaker 3: Maybe he's fine.
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: He bounced back incredibly, And I hope they can maximize
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: on it. I really do.
- 1:13:02Speaker 3: I it takes a lot for me to be critical
- 1:13:05Speaker 3: of that team.
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: No, you you have been the last couple days.
- 1:13:08Speaker 3: The two things that I will say, and then I'll stop,
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: I promise, but this is the offseason. We got time
- 1:13:12Speaker 3: to fill.
- 1:13:14Speaker 4: The first thing that I'll say is anybody criticizing Jason
- 1:13:17Speaker 4: Tatum for not playing in Game seven as an idiot
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: I have like, I'm just gonna flat I'll call you
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: an idiot.
- 1:13:22Speaker 1: I think bigger issue was the strategy they took into
- 1:13:26Speaker 1: Game seven without having him than him not playing.
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: Sure, but if you really thought it was smart to
- 1:13:32Speaker 4: risk the franchise player in game seven of the first
- 1:13:36Speaker 4: round of the playoffs, not the NBA Finals, the first
- 1:13:39Speaker 4: round of the playoffs, and you thought it was smart
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: when he has clearly has a injury that's a precursor
- 1:13:45Speaker 4: to a bigger injury, then you're you're just like, you're
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: just being obtuse.
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: I think that's maybe what people have missed. It's a
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: different conversation. If it's like shoulder was bugging in it
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: was unrelated, But this is like directly related.
- 1:13:58Speaker 3: It was like back of a.
- 1:13:58Speaker 4: Knee high calf, which is like a direct relation to
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: this is exactly what happened to Tyre's Halliburt. Tyres Haliburton
- 1:14:06Speaker 4: last year had a calf strain. Yeah, tried to play
- 1:14:09Speaker 4: through it in the NBA Finals and rupture. It also
- 1:14:12Speaker 4: happened to Kevin Durant. So like, this is a classic
- 1:14:15Speaker 4: overcompensation on the good leg blow out the other Achilles' nightmare,
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: which we do not need.
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: That would be the last thing.
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: It's unfortunate, but I don't I don't fault them for that.
- 1:14:26Speaker 4: The other thing I would say, if you have to
- 1:14:29Speaker 4: have like a kumbaya, like go to top golf, have
- 1:14:33Speaker 4: a retreat, go somewhere, don't break up the j's like
- 1:14:36Speaker 4: figure it out. I come together as a as a
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: Brad Stevens, Joe Missoula. I think Derek White is kind
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: of part of this too, Yeah, a little bit. He's
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: Jason Tatum's best friend on the team. Uh Tatum, Jalen
- 1:14:50Speaker 4: Brown go to some like darkness retreat somewhere for a weekend.
- 1:14:54Speaker 4: I'm sure Joe Mizzoula has got all those cute up
- 1:14:57Speaker 4: that wackadoo, right Like, I'm sure he's got plenty of
- 1:15:00Speaker 4: this figured out, and like you're better together.
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: It's the right the figure it out.
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: I figure it out for better or worse. I think
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: that's kind of up to Jalen Brown right now. I
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: don't think that's up to them. Like if if Jalen
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: Brown doesn't want to be here, he doesn't want to
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: be here, if you can talk him in a staying
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: or if this is all just noise, great, I think
- 1:15:18Speaker 1: that they're at their best with the two of them.
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: But I would not waste years of Tatum trying to
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: get a disgruntle Jalen Brown to play long too. I
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: think at a certain point and this is gonna come
- 1:15:27Speaker 1: down to Brad, and it's not an easy decision. I'm
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: not saying this like you just make this decisions for
- 1:15:31Speaker 1: the moment. If Jalen Brown isn't gonna play ball, you
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: know you gotta make it. You gotta make a tough choice,
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: and you don't want to just drag that out too
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: long if you're Brad Stevens.
- 1:15:42Speaker 3: But to me, what they need is they need a
- 1:15:44Speaker 3: big man.
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: They need to say how long have I been saying
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: they need a true center?
- 1:15:47Speaker 4: But like your idea of a true center is a
- 1:15:50Speaker 4: little bit different than mine.
- 1:15:51Speaker 3: I think I.
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: Would take and maybe not him because there's injury concerns,
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: But like what Porzingis gave them was perfect, and I
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: know he's a unicorn, but a guy who's a presence
- 1:16:01Speaker 1: at the rim. Brad said, of today, they need an
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: offensive presence at the rim. If he has a jump shot,
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: too great. They need an offensive presence at their a
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: real offensive presence at the rim, pick and roll back
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: to the basket. They need that he was there. He
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: was their stabilizer, like offensively.
- 1:16:18Speaker 4: Yeah, and we can talk about, you know, a football
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: analogy here, yea. When they lost Porzingis, they became a
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: team that can only throw the deep ball, right, Like
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: they only had the deep ball. They didn't have anything
- 1:16:31Speaker 4: underneath the defense. They didn't have a run game, they
- 1:16:34Speaker 4: had no plan B, they had no you know, right
- 1:16:38Speaker 4: hook right, they had just jab and so then you
- 1:16:42Speaker 4: know when you play these teams like the Sixers, and
- 1:16:44Speaker 4: the Sixers closed out space and they tightened up on
- 1:16:46Speaker 4: the three point line and YadA YadA, YadA, Uh they didn't.
- 1:16:49Speaker 4: Porzingis gave them that extra like dimension in the half court.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: Especially.
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: This has always been my thing with the three pointers.
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: I know you it gets under your skin. Shot out
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: Tony Mazeratti for asking, oh, if they shoot too many threes,
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: it's not the raw number of threes. Although shooting more
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: threes than two is in the playoff series as wild.
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: It's what else can they do because at a certain
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: point the threes are not gonna fall, and I think
- 1:17:11Speaker 1: their idea is to just shoot through it, which during
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: a rough stretch in December against a bunch of bum
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: Eastern Conference teams is fine. You can't do that in
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: the playoffs. You need a plan B.
- 1:17:21Speaker 3: You have to have.
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: It can't just be we're going to bang. Oh it's
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: the West Coast thing. It's a Shannhan thing. We're gonna
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: bang our head against the wall to the wall breaks.
- 1:17:28Speaker 1: You need a plan B. You need a CounterPunch, you
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: need something to go to. And what Porzingis gave them
- 1:17:32Speaker 1: in twenty four was that with the pick and roll game,
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: with the pick and pop again with the back to
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: the basket. Frankly it should be Jalen Brown is a slasher,
- 1:17:42Speaker 1: and they refuse to really, you know, emphasize that part
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: of his game, which I think is the best part
- 1:17:47Speaker 1: of his game. Yeah, but a center would massively help
- 1:17:51Speaker 1: a plan B. They don't have one.
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: They just become way too perimeter heavy. It's dueling fiddles,
- 1:17:56Speaker 4: you know, it's jego.
- 1:17:58Speaker 1: Too many threes.
- 1:17:59Speaker 4: Tatum goes I, Jalen goes Iso or it's bombs away
- 1:18:02Speaker 4: like and that those are kind of their option. Uh,
- 1:18:06Speaker 4: it got two three happy this year all in the playoffs.
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: Not in the regular season, but in the playoffs.
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: Why it's a different game.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: But you know, porzingis at the nail, as they say,
- 1:18:16Speaker 4: at the free throw line on a you know, on
- 1:18:18Speaker 4: a switch where he's got a little guy on him,
- 1:18:20Speaker 4: and he would just turn around and shoot and shoot
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: over him like that was a It's what mb did
- 1:18:25Speaker 4: for the Sixers.
- 1:18:26Speaker 3: It settles you down. It just makes it it's an
- 1:18:28Speaker 3: easy basket.
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: How much Celtics. We just did like ten minutes of Celtics. Okay,
- 1:18:32Speaker 1: thank you for sticking through that.
- 1:18:34Speaker 3: I mean, I hope they like we're on until two
- 1:18:37Speaker 3: and they they can't they can't do anything about it,
- 1:18:40Speaker 3: like it's our show. Uh listen, press conference.
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: This has been this has been way more on my
- 1:18:47Speaker 4: mind the last couple of days in the Patriots for
- 1:18:49Speaker 4: obvious reasons. So there you go, a couple of questions
- 1:18:53Speaker 4: from the emails here back to football.
- 1:18:56Speaker 3: I promise.
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: Yesterday is to find Diggs his trial concluded, found not guilty.
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: I don't want to talk about the legal part of
- 1:19:06Speaker 4: it not necessary, But are you just enter out in general, like,
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: would you bring Stefan Diggs back at this point?
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, probably, I mean him, sorry, him, A J.
- 1:19:21Speaker 1: Brown and Dobbs. That's that's a pretty good group. And
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: you have Kyle Williams for deaf depth, Mac Hollins for depth.
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: You know, Kaishawan Boody's probably out at that point. I
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: don't know, like Pop Douglas, not really sure how he
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: would even fit in there, but I mean you need
- 1:19:37Speaker 1: I guess he's one of the would actually you need
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: the bodies you need to carry five receivers, but well, no,
- 1:19:42Speaker 1: it would be Diggs, Brown, Dobbs, Kyle Williams. So yeah,
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: they're gonna be Douglas, Hollins and Booty for the last
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: one or two spots. You want to throw one of
- 1:19:51Speaker 1: those udfas in their aftanchism. But yeah, no, I think
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: Diggs can play. I think he has good chemistry with
- 1:19:56Speaker 1: Drake may you know. I think it it clicked here
- 1:20:00Speaker 1: for him. I'd probably do it as a one year deal.
- 1:20:03Speaker 1: I wouldn't give Hi multiple years or anything like that,
- 1:20:05Speaker 1: but on a one year deal, yeah, I'd be in.
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: I still think he has something left in the tank.
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: Would you?
- 1:20:11Speaker 1: Are you?
- 1:20:11Speaker 3: So you're in with AJ Brown?
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: Okay, So if it's one or the other, Like let's
- 1:20:16Speaker 1: say I would rather have Digs and a first round
- 1:20:19Speaker 1: pick than AJ Brown. If it's a J Brown for
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: less than a first round pick, I'd rather have AJ
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: Brown because I think he more compliments what they have
- 1:20:27Speaker 1: in place.
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: So I think it's interesting because is there a tiny
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: bit And I don't think it's enough to necessarily sway
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: the trade too much, but is there a tiny bit
- 1:20:37Speaker 4: of leverage here now that it's like, we haven't closed
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: the door on Digs yet and the Patriots could very
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: easily just say the AJ Brown thing was too pricey. Yeah,
- 1:20:47Speaker 4: we're just gonna pivot back to Stefan Danny get Digs.
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: But I mean, I did find it weird that Elliot
- 1:20:55Speaker 1: Wolf was asked multiple times this SAW season about steph
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: On Diggs and he never once committed to closing the door.
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: So yeah, maybe he cans a little more leverage.
- 1:21:04Speaker 3: I just feel like you have to end up with
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: one of them. I can't give up.
- 1:21:08Speaker 4: On the Stefon Diggs thing because I think he had
- 1:21:10Speaker 4: a great year for this team last year. It got
- 1:21:12Speaker 4: bumpy towards the end off the field, but on the field,
- 1:21:16Speaker 4: I felt it was pretty good. I think the off
- 1:21:19Speaker 4: field probably impacted the on field a little bit in
- 1:21:22Speaker 4: terms of how he performed in the playoffs. It wasn't
- 1:21:25Speaker 4: as good in the playoffs as it was in the
- 1:21:27Speaker 4: regular season, and maybe some of the regular season stuff
- 1:21:30Speaker 4: was like peak games. He obviously had the Buffalo game,
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: the Baltimore game. I think he had a big game
- 1:21:35Speaker 4: against like Carolina, you know, like he had some like
- 1:21:38Speaker 4: big one off performances in that season that elevated his
- 1:21:42Speaker 4: season long stats. And he had some duds mixed in
- 1:21:45Speaker 4: as well. But in general, I thought that he more
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: than did his job. Like his job was to come
- 1:21:51Speaker 4: in be a number one wide receiver, lead the room,
- 1:21:54Speaker 4: that sort of thing, and I think he did that.
- 1:21:56Speaker 4: So I'm not totally against bringing Stefan Diggs back.
- 1:22:01Speaker 3: Would I do it with A. J.
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: Brown?
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: That's getting a little dicey for me. I think that's
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: a lot of.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: You don't want both of them. That was your master
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: plan at the beginning of the off season football wise,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: I love it.
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: Yeah, they already have Romeo Dobbs in here.
- 1:22:16Speaker 1: Yeah, A J.
- 1:22:17Speaker 4: Brown and Diggs are two big personalities. It would be
- 1:22:21Speaker 4: interesting to see how they would manage that piece of it.
- 1:22:23Speaker 1: I think the upside is too high.
- 1:22:26Speaker 3: It's immense.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: But yeah, it's a risk, but wholely crap. So like Romeo,
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: Dobs then easily becomes a third fiddle. Yeah, it's an
- 1:22:33Speaker 4: expensive third fiddle. That's a great spot for him, though it's.
- 1:22:36Speaker 3: An eighteen million dollar third fidd That's.
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: Not that much for a receiver.
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: For a third receiver, it is or second receiver. It's
- 1:22:44Speaker 4: not for a number one receiver. It's a bargain if
- 1:22:47Speaker 4: he plays like one. So I'm not against the whole idea,
- 1:22:51Speaker 4: I I really am.
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: I'm not. He is would we want to go a
- 1:22:55Speaker 1: V fully gearing AAV right? Yeah, he is? I think
- 1:23:01Speaker 1: outside the top thirty, Yeah, I believe that. So the
- 1:23:05Speaker 1: Broncos have at least two wide receivers at the top here. Oh,
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: but I guess I would need to find a team
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: that is three. The Seahawks. The Seahawks third receiver makes
- 1:23:15Speaker 1: comparable money. So because they have Raschichi Heater, they just
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: paid Cooper Cup and then obviously jsn. Hey, that's the
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: team that just won the Super Bowl. You want to
- 1:23:25Speaker 1: compete with that?
- 1:23:27Speaker 3: Like that?
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: Isn't that the case for it? I?
- 1:23:30Speaker 4: Yeah, I would expect Diggs's market to start to move.
- 1:23:32Speaker 4: I think this legal ongoing legal battle is what.
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: Well, so what do you think he gives up mar.
- 1:23:38Speaker 4: What does he really get versus what the reported numbers are?
- 1:23:41Speaker 4: I think are going to be two very different things.
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: Avy, what do you think he gets aav around what
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: he got last year from the Patriots?
- 1:23:49Speaker 3: What was that it was like in the high teens?
- 1:23:51Speaker 3: I want to Yeah, that's what I think it was.
- 1:23:54Speaker 3: I don't know that's where tops is.
- 1:23:56Speaker 4: Yeah, I think that he'll get probably reported a similar
- 1:24:00Speaker 4: contract to that. What's real and what's fake is you know,
- 1:24:04Speaker 4: can be determined. So he was at twenty one point
- 1:24:07Speaker 4: one with the Patriots last year. It was a three year,
- 1:24:10Speaker 4: sixty three million dollar deal. Obviously all of it was fugaisy,
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: but that was the that was the contract that was reported.
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: So twenty one point one or twenty one point two
- 1:24:20Speaker 4: million with sixteen point six guaranteed that.
- 1:24:23Speaker 1: The Titans are kind of right in this ballpark of
- 1:24:25Speaker 1: having like three their wide receivers be paid top.
- 1:24:27Speaker 3: It's crazy for a team, very good well, I don't.
- 1:24:30Speaker 1: Know how you want to do. Cardinal takes contract in
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: that because he just naturally is a big rookie contract.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: But he's in there, like who else is up here?
- 1:24:38Speaker 3: The packer?
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: Yeah, but they don't have one of the guys at
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: like the top of the list to see if the
- 1:24:43Speaker 1: Seahawks have it, Like.
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: I just wonder if they feel like and when I
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: say they, I mean the Patriots.
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: Yeah, there's a very.
- 1:24:51Speaker 4: Good chance that internally they feel like Romeo Dobbs can
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: get comparable production as Stefan Diggs or if you had both.
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: But what do you need to bring in the baggage
- 1:25:01Speaker 4: that comes with it?
- 1:25:04Speaker 3: Like it does it really work?
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: I just think that the upside of that room is
- 1:25:07Speaker 1: so high that I'd take the risk.
- 1:25:10Speaker 3: Okay, fair enough.
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: I'm not closing the door on it either. Mike Elliott
- 1:25:13Speaker 4: Wolf hasn't closed any doors.
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: You have to come out with one of them. You
- 1:25:17Speaker 1: absolutely have to come out with one of them. I'd
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: rather have digs if it's going to be a first
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: round pick, especially if it's a twenty seven first to
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: get a J. Brown, But if it's a J. Brown
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: for a second or digs in free agency, I think
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: I'd rather have Brown.
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: I just wonder how quickly the DIGS market moves, because
- 1:25:29Speaker 4: obviously AJ Brown still got a month ago here until
- 1:25:32Speaker 4: he's quote unquote trade eligible or.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: So Digs just digs weight to see what happens with Brown.
- 1:25:38Speaker 1: If there is another team that we don't know about
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: that's suddenly down more desperate now he has more leverage,
- 1:25:42Speaker 1: it's possible.
- 1:25:43Speaker 4: I have thought from the beginning with this whole DIGS
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: thing that you know, if we think of the.
- 1:25:48Speaker 3: Receivers as a game of musical chairs.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: Yeah, and the music is stopping, and it just feels
- 1:25:53Speaker 4: like Digs in the Patriots are just kind of destined
- 1:25:56Speaker 4: right like where like they the Patriots have kicked the
- 1:25:59Speaker 4: tires and all these their options. Diggs has kind of
- 1:26:02Speaker 4: been hanging out there, you know, waiting for his legal
- 1:26:04Speaker 4: troubles to kind of be in the past, and probably
- 1:26:06Speaker 4: a little bit too. And the music stops, and it's like,
- 1:26:11Speaker 4: it's just it's just a marriage.
- 1:26:13Speaker 3: It's meant to be.
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: You don't have to talk me into Stefan Diggs.
- 1:26:15Speaker 3: Yeah, he was big, but it fizzled out. But he
- 1:26:19Speaker 3: was good when he was good.
- 1:26:20Speaker 4: Yeah, there's an email that the subject line says that
- 1:26:26Speaker 4: if I don't read this email, I'm going to be
- 1:26:28Speaker 4: cursed for the next five years. So I guess I
- 1:26:30Speaker 4: better read the email. Uh So, yesterday Fred and I
- 1:26:33Speaker 4: discussed the Celtics briefly, and he was shouting at me
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: about the Celtics because he's also a needler, just like
- 1:26:40Speaker 4: Alex Is when it comes to this topic.
- 1:26:42Speaker 3: But he uh, I use.
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: The comparison, which I don't think you're a big fan
- 1:26:47Speaker 4: of of comparing the Celtics and the Patriots, because I'm
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: trying to make a Patriots like yeah centric.
- 1:26:52Speaker 1: I think, yeah, it's different.
- 1:26:54Speaker 3: So my argument was.
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: That the Celtics in the Pagets over the last calendar year,
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: let's call it, had these kind of unexpected seasons like
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: the Celtics. Last year, their win total was forty one
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: and a half. I think they're like forty one games
- 1:27:10Speaker 4: right around there. They ended up winning fifty six. They
- 1:27:13Speaker 4: got the two seed. Jason Tatum comes back at the
- 1:27:16Speaker 4: end of the year, and so all of a sudden,
- 1:27:18Speaker 4: their expectation went from frankly a team that was like
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: a play in to lottery team to a favorite to
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: come out of the Eastern Conference and then the Patriots similarly,
- 1:27:29Speaker 4: when we kept moving the goalposts right, like the first
- 1:27:33Speaker 4: part of the season starts. They started two and two
- 1:27:36Speaker 4: right to one and two. They lost to the opener
- 1:27:38Speaker 4: into Pittsburgh. Then they go on that run in October
- 1:27:42Speaker 4: where they win the three straight road games, the game
- 1:27:44Speaker 4: in Buffalo, and all of a sudden the goalposts moved
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: a little bit, like, Oh, this could be a good,
- 1:27:49Speaker 4: frisky season. Then they win ten straight games and all
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: of a sudden it's oh, this is a playoff team.
- 1:27:54Speaker 4: And then they keep winning and it's like, Okay, well,
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: now it's a super Bowl team. I think that it's
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: similar in that respect, very different places of their builds,
- 1:28:02Speaker 4: right Like the Celtics are a built now team, the
- 1:28:05Speaker 4: Patriots are still building. The Celtics are in a win
- 1:28:08Speaker 4: now contention mode type of thing. But I think there's
- 1:28:11Speaker 4: seasons in a vacuum had a similar upward trajectory.
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: A little bit. But I think the difference is one
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: that that Celtics win total was always ridiculous. Jalen Brown
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: Derek White are great players. The Eastern Conference was worse
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: comparatively than what the AFC was, and the EFC was
- 1:28:26Speaker 1: not good. I was. I think it was fair once
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: Tatum came back and we saw what he was to
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: shift the expectations for that team, the Patriots, It really
- 1:28:33Speaker 1: felt like week to week you were kind of waiting
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: for the other shoot to drop. Yeah, Celtics are an
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: experienced team with proven players, and they got bounced in
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: the first round by an inferior opponent. I don't think
- 1:28:45Speaker 1: the Patriots lost to an inferior opponent like Seahawks. Is
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: a better team? Oh YEA Sixers is not a better
- 1:28:52Speaker 1: team than the Celtics.
- 1:28:53Speaker 3: You don't think so.
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: I think the especially once they got up three to one, right,
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: but they've got up three to one on a team
- 1:29:01Speaker 1: that didn't have a healthy Joil and Be. I think
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: Celtics were better team to say the sick I think.
- 1:29:06Speaker 4: I think unfortunately the talent gap proved out to be
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: a lot closer than we thought it would be. Like
- 1:29:11Speaker 4: when the Sixers got out on the court, I got,
- 1:29:13Speaker 4: we're doing basketball, but.
- 1:29:14Speaker 1: I opened the door. They opened the door for him though.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: But when you have Maxi, Edgecombe, Paul George and be
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: on the court together, that's a really good.
- 1:29:21Speaker 1: Paul George hasn't played like that in years I know
- 1:29:23Speaker 1: it was, and the Celtics opened that opportunity.
- 1:29:26Speaker 3: For it sucked.
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: Whereas all of a sudden, he looks like it was
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: ten years I guess maybe say a little bit with
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: that was Sam Donovd, Sam Donaldy even play well in
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. It was like Indiana Paul George all
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: of a sudden, Yeah, so the Celtics opened that door.
- 1:29:37Speaker 3: No, the Celtics definitely was worse.
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: And like it like this is what we were talking
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: about yesterday, like the idea that the Celtics might have
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: been fraudulent as a title contender because they looked like
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: in the Eastern Conference, like the Eastern Conference contender until
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: very suddenly they didn't. I don't think. Yes, the Patriots season,
- 1:29:59Speaker 1: like the Patriots got exposed. Definitely, I wouldn't say they
- 1:30:03Speaker 1: were fraudulent. I think everybody said all along, like they're
- 1:30:06Speaker 1: one of the best teams AFC. They have a chance
- 1:30:07Speaker 1: to come out, But the NFC is better than the AFC,
- 1:30:09Speaker 1: and whoever comes out of the AFC is probably going
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: to have a tough task ahead of them. And that's
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: what bore out the Celtics. We talked about. It was
- 1:30:16Speaker 1: kind of the same thing and that they're, if not
- 1:30:18Speaker 1: the best team in the East, one of the best
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: was themver Detroit. And you know, the West is or
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: in the in the East, the West is much better.
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: And whether it's the Spurs or whoever, like, it's gonna
- 1:30:27Speaker 1: be a tough test. But the Celtics never got to
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: that test. They've lost to one of the teams that
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: they were viewed as superior to.
- 1:30:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I think that's all fair.
- 1:30:33Speaker 4: The Celtics definitely had higher expectations and like they definitely
- 1:30:38Speaker 4: choked harder than the Patriots.
- 1:30:40Speaker 3: There's no doubt about that. But I do think that.
- 1:30:44Speaker 4: You know, Brad Stevens said it today, the Patriots have
- 1:30:47Speaker 4: made clear about this as well. They if you had
- 1:30:51Speaker 4: told them before the season started the Celtics were gonna
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: win fifty six games and be the two seed, they
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: were probably without Jason Tatum, by the way, they probably
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: would have been like, holy crap, that's.
- 1:30:59Speaker 3: Pretty good, right.
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: If you told the Patriots before the twenty twenty five
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: seasons started that they were going to go to the
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: Super Bowl, I think all of us would have thought
- 1:31:06Speaker 4: you were crazy, right, So, like it's a little similar
- 1:31:09Speaker 4: in that regard. But what I thought was interesting, you know.
- 1:31:12Speaker 4: The further the analogy with the Patriots, what the best
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: part of their off season so far? In my opinion,
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: It might not all work, but the best part of
- 1:31:21Speaker 4: their off season in my opinion so far is that
- 1:31:23Speaker 4: they didn't get married to the team that just went
- 1:31:25Speaker 4: to the Super Bowl.
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: That's a great point.
- 1:31:27Speaker 3: They were.
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: Awake to the fact that they overachieved a little bit.
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: I think they had some breaks, and they had the
- 1:31:34Speaker 4: schedule and bo Nick's getting hurt, and like all these
- 1:31:37Speaker 4: different things that went their way, and so they didn't
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: sit there and say, well, we have a super Bowl team.
- 1:31:43Speaker 4: They stayed this course that continued with the process. They
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: gutted the roster in areas that they were always planning
- 1:31:50Speaker 4: on gutting the roster. You know, they didn't keep Gelatti,
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: Tavai and Forny Jennings and all these players that they
- 1:31:56Speaker 4: said this time last year were probably not going to
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: be longs. They stayed the course, and I think that
- 1:32:04Speaker 4: that's the best way to go about things.
- 1:32:05Speaker 1: I hope back to something we said for the Patriots
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: as being like I remember saying this was one of
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: the big questions of the Patriots offseason going in how
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: do you balance this unexpected rapid rise and the success
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: that you had for most of the season versus you
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: saw what it takes to win a championship and you
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: clearly weren't at that level. And the last game of
- 1:32:28Speaker 1: the year is always the biggest evaluation. How do you
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: not overreact to the way the Super Bowl went without
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: also underreacting to it because that game deserved a reaction,
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: and that's not an easy lying to walk. Like we
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: were saying this, I brought this up into the offseason, like,
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: let's talk through it. I don't know what the answer is.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: I think they did a pretty good job of that.
- 1:32:48Speaker 1: I think they addressed some of that. We were talking
- 1:32:50Speaker 1: earlier about the run game and the outside run game
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: and specifically and building up on the edge. You know,
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: I remember when we were talking about this was about
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: Zion Young. It sort of applies to Gay Bacchus. I
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: remember being on a show and talking about, Yeah, the
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: interesting thing was on Young is we talked about them
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: need to improve the pass rush. He's more probably a
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: run player and edge satter than a pass rusher. It's like, well,
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: how do you square that with Patriots fans? WO want
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: to see the pas rushing proof and I said, you
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: asked them if they remember all those times Kenneth Walker
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: turned the corner in the Super Bowl. I do, right,
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: And so it feels like that was something that needed
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: to be addressed. Thedn go overboard and doing it. I
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: think they just addressed it without blowing up other things
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: and moved on. So I I think that that's it's
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: not easy to do. Credit to Elliott Wolf and Mike
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: Vrabel in the front office for walking that line. I
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: think they did it. We'll see ultimately how it bears out,
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: but that was like a big thing that the Patriots
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: were gonna have to tiptoe. And I don't know it's
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: quite same with Celtics because there's the Jalen Brown of
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: it all and what does he want? But yeah, that's
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: there's some comparison there.
- 1:33:50Speaker 4: I think that that's the best part of this offseason
- 1:33:53Speaker 4: to me so far. You opened up opportunities for the Patriots.
- 1:33:57Speaker 4: I'm talking about to hopefully how players with higher ceilings
- 1:34:01Speaker 4: in some of the roles that they had before.
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: Right that, I mean, you're not married toft.
- 1:34:06Speaker 4: They could easily have run it back and said this
- 1:34:10Speaker 4: team won fourteen games and went to the Super Bowl.
- 1:34:13Speaker 4: We're gonna bring all the same cast of characters back.
- 1:34:17Speaker 4: And I think the other thing that you know is
- 1:34:19Speaker 4: lingering to me about the Patriots last year was one
- 1:34:23Speaker 4: of the most unique vibes years I've ever been a
- 1:34:26Speaker 4: part of. Their vibes were off the chart. The locker
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: was bumping every single day. Rabel was on a heater.
- 1:34:34Speaker 4: Everything that he did was worked. Every button he pushing
- 1:34:38Speaker 4: up until the super Bowl, obviously all of it worked.
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: And replicating that exact same thing again and just expecting
- 1:34:47Speaker 4: to run it back and have it go the exact
- 1:34:50Speaker 4: same way is not realistic. And so the one thing
- 1:34:54Speaker 4: and I'm not usually like the vibes guy. I'm usually
- 1:34:58Speaker 4: the analytical guy. But the one thing that I think,
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: you know, people talk about the schedule, people talk about,
- 1:35:04Speaker 4: you know, having a target more on your back this year,
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: all these other things that are more tangible, But how
- 1:35:11Speaker 4: do they recreate.
- 1:35:13Speaker 3: The vibe, the magic? How do they what's like, you know,
- 1:35:17Speaker 3: what's warriors next year?
- 1:35:19Speaker 4: What's like all these other like gimmicky things that Vrabel
- 1:35:22Speaker 4: did that worked.
- 1:35:25Speaker 3: All of it worked.
- 1:35:25Speaker 1: Yeah, you're you're looking at I mean, that's a leadership thing.
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: That's a culture thing. Yeah, you know you're gonna kind
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: of lean on Drake May for that, Morgan, Moses, will Campbell,
- 1:35:34Speaker 1: Milton Williams, Roberts, Blaine, Marcus Jones, like those guys. Look,
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: I've I've covered a lot of different teams from Division
- 1:35:42Speaker 1: III to the NFL, different sports, all that, and so
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: I you can't force that thing, whatever you want to
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: call it. I don't call it culture because to me,
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: culture is more of a year to year But like
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: that individual I guess identity, the identity of an individual
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: team year to year. And there are some teams that
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: are really special. There are some teams that never really
- 1:36:02Speaker 1: get that and it just becomes a nine to five,
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: punch your clock, show up, go home. Yeah, And I
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: think we've both covered teams like that as well. We've
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: covered teams like that that have won a Super Bowl
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: a lot too. Like So, like that was what was
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: so crazy about last year was like the teams that
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: we covered at the end of Brady's run in twenty
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: eighteen and even twenty nineteen were objectively more talented football team.
- 1:36:23Speaker 1: The eighteen team had some juice, the eighteen team and
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: the nineteen team was very transition.
- 1:36:27Speaker 4: The eighteen team had juice in the respect of like
- 1:36:29Speaker 4: that nobody believes in us anymore kind of juice, like
- 1:36:32Speaker 4: you know, they would walk, which was hilarious because they
- 1:36:34Speaker 4: were in the super Bowl in twenty seventeen. But they
- 1:36:37Speaker 4: still like somehow figured out a way to make themselves
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: the underdog.
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: Uh.
- 1:36:42Speaker 4: But I never felt like they were having fun, Like
- 1:36:45Speaker 4: the team was having fun last year, and I know
- 1:36:47Speaker 4: that that's so corny, but like.
- 1:36:48Speaker 3: It just I never felt that way.
- 1:36:50Speaker 1: I don't think fun has to necessarily be a part
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: of the identity. That's one of them you can have.
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: Like that was definitely more fun identity. But the biggest
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: thing for me is like I've seen where you have
- 1:36:58Speaker 1: a really good year and then you come back and
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: you try to like, all right, like this is gonna
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: be just like last year and we're gonna and it's not,
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: and you can't force it. That's why there's work you
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: can Like there's definitely like it can inform and I'm
- 1:37:13Speaker 1: not saying like forget about everything that happened lat year.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: We're like Warriors is a great one that was last
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: year's team. Yeah, make that like there will be a
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: new thing this year and some of the other stuff
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: they were doing, like the the maybe the Dinners continue,
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: maybe that the offensive line, but like maybe maybe Shirley
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: Temple has become something else or something like that. Like
- 1:37:30Speaker 1: you just have to let it come naturally. When you
- 1:37:32Speaker 1: try to force those things, it just gets very uncomfortable
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: and it's not easy. But that's where you lean on
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: strong leadership, and that's where I think it'll be really
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: interesting to see. We've very very very small glimpse of
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: it in some of these offseason videos they put out,
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: Like Drake May was a leader last year, but I
- 1:37:48Speaker 1: also think you know, they.
- 1:37:50Speaker 3: Well, his confidence has to be right.
- 1:37:53Speaker 1: It's a different like last year. Was he he hadn't
- 1:37:56Speaker 1: been there, done that, He hadn't proven it, and you
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: had these veterans that had been around, and I think
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: he was leading in the way that a quarterback leads.
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: But was it was it Drake May's team last year?
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: Was Drake May the guy in the locker room? He
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: was the guy on the field. Was Drake Made the
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: guy in the locker room? I don't know, And I'm
- 1:38:13Speaker 1: not faulting him forty which just he was a young
- 1:38:15Speaker 1: guy who was first year as a starter. They had
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: a lot of strong veteran personalities, like you look at
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: what Diggs was the guy giving those speeches, right.
- 1:38:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: So I think this year it's Drake May stepping into
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: that where he is the guy not just on the field,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: but in the locker room. It's, you know, he's talking,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: everybody shuts up and listens. I get why he was
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: and there were moments where it seemed like he was
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: that guy last year. It's now the Drake May show,
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: and it's going to be interesting to see how he
- 1:38:42Speaker 1: grows in that role.
- 1:38:43Speaker 4: I would say that, you know, all three of them, Gonzalez, May,
- 1:38:47Speaker 4: Will Campbell, and we had an email about you know.
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: Campbell is a good one.
- 1:38:51Speaker 3: Campbell when he.
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: Was drafted and we had the email, was just asking
- 1:38:55Speaker 4: if any other team has had first round run like
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: that over the last three years. You know, I'm sure
- 1:39:01Speaker 4: some people would feel a little bit skeptical about putting
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: Will Campbell on that list right now, but.
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: If he's a starting tackle, he's in the group.
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: That's a If you drafted a franchise quarterback as star
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: corner and a starting left tackle and three consecutive drafts,
- 1:39:14Speaker 4: that's a pretty good run. Now, you had top five
- 1:39:17Speaker 4: picks in two of the drafts, so we'd like to
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: think you did. But the point being with Will Campbell,
- 1:39:22Speaker 4: separate from his play, he was touted as a culture
- 1:39:27Speaker 4: changing personality, like somebody else said that was going to
- 1:39:31Speaker 4: come into an offensive line room and immediately shift the
- 1:39:35Speaker 4: vibe in that room, right, And I think that, you know,
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: Morgan Moses and Garrett Bradberry probably did the most of
- 1:39:40Speaker 4: that last year. But Morgan Garrett Bradberry's gone. Morgan Moses
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: is you know, going to be gone. He's on his
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: way out.
- 1:39:47Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:39:48Speaker 1: Even throw Win there too, and he's in a contract. Yeah,
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: so it's that's part of it too. Absolutely, a lot
- 1:39:54Speaker 1: of people got mad about you about Randy Moss.
- 1:39:56Speaker 3: Did you say something? You said something on that podcast.
- 1:39:58Speaker 1: I think they're very salty as a case for Randy
- 1:40:01Speaker 1: Moss to be in the Patriots Hall of Fame. So
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: I know people don't like this, but like I go
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: back to the ovation he got Brady Knight. Yeah, he
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: is a part of the DNA of this organization. I'm
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: not rushing to put him in. There's a long list
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: of guys that should go in before him. I don't
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: think he's a no. You know, because we were this
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: is on Patriots B were also getting questions about like
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: Matthew Judaan and who were like Henry Hunter hen Well,
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: I've said there's a case for her Henry know who.
- 1:40:29Speaker 1: There were some other like even just like some of
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: the Dynasty era guys who weren't quite like Dietrich Wise,
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: Jonathan Jones, Jonathan, you can make a case for Jonathan
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: Jones before Randy Moss, but he was captain and all that.
- 1:40:44Speaker 4: So your question was, is that did you say that
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: people think of Randy Moss as a Patriot and not
- 1:40:50Speaker 4: a Viking.
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: I said, if you asked the neutral NFL fan, what
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: team do associate Randy Moss with most, I think it
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: would be close between Patriots and Vikings.
- 1:40:57Speaker 4: So the emailer said he thought you were crazy for
- 1:41:00Speaker 4: thinking that they wouldn't say Vikings.
- 1:41:02Speaker 3: I think it depends on what age.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: You know, if you're asking an older fan, then that
- 1:41:08Speaker 4: remembers it more in Minnesota then maybe. But his most
- 1:41:13Speaker 4: iconic season happened with the Patriots, right, is a record breaking.
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: Not just his most iconic season, maybe the greatest wide
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: receiver season of all time.
- 1:41:20Speaker 3: It happened with the Patriots, and.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: Then somebody's like, well, do you consider Reeves Patriot? No,
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: But like Reevs was with the Jets.
- 1:41:26Speaker 4: And I wouldn't say as good as good as Reevs
- 1:41:29Speaker 4: was in twenty fourteen. He wasn't Randy Moss in two
- 1:41:31Speaker 4: thousand and seven good. He was very good, but he
- 1:41:34Speaker 4: wasn't right.
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: His best season was with the Jets. Yeah, So you know,
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: was it on this show or another show where we
- 1:41:41Speaker 1: realized I never put it together that we took Kevin
- 1:41:43Speaker 1: Garnett and Randy Moss or Minnesota at the same time
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: and they were probably.
- 1:41:47Speaker 3: Put that together.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: Ever put that together, I forget where that was.
- 1:41:49Speaker 4: Well, Randy Moss was in with the Raiders when they
- 1:41:51Speaker 4: technically right, but they both came here at the same time, Yeah,
- 1:41:54Speaker 4: and were like awesome.
- 1:41:56Speaker 1: See Kevin Garnett. I think more people would say Timberwolves
- 1:41:59Speaker 1: than would say Kings. For Randy Moss, you think, yeah,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: he was there. How long was Randy Moss.
- 1:42:04Speaker 3: With the the Vikings? Yeah? I think Viking ninety eight
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: draft picks, so.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: He was in Minnesota for eight years. Garden that was
- 1:42:13Speaker 1: in Minnesota for fourteen years.
- 1:42:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: When in league, MVP was like probably had the belt
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: of the best player in the league at one point
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: in Minnesota. I would say I think both of them
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: did well best receiver. Yeah, sure, interesting, I don't yah
- 1:42:28Speaker 4: we we uh because I think KG because of all
- 1:42:31Speaker 4: this stuff that he does with Pierce, he kinda but
- 1:42:34Speaker 4: he's he's kind of been more of a Celtic in
- 1:42:36Speaker 4: his post place.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: Look at Randy Moss. Randy Moss is more national, but
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: he's always doing to defend the Wall stuff. Yeah, you know,
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: it's it's always him and Bruski together again when he
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: came back for the Brady thing. He's I don't know
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: how much he does with the Vikings, honestly, because maybe
- 1:42:50Speaker 1: maybe I'm missing some I feel like I see him
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: doing more Patriots stuff than Viking stuff now.
- 1:42:58Speaker 4: It I mean it certainly no offense to the Vikings.
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: It's a more recognizable brand.
- 1:43:03Speaker 3: So like, if you're branding the yourself as like a
- 1:43:06Speaker 3: national analyst like.
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: Grobe, maybe that's proback. Obviously, Adamin's a one team guy,
- 1:43:12Speaker 4: so that's different. But like Gronk and Brady and and
- 1:43:15Speaker 4: Randy Moss and all these other guys that are have
- 1:43:18Speaker 4: turned into you know, media careers.
- 1:43:21Speaker 3: Yeah, all those guys are being touted as part of
- 1:43:25Speaker 3: the Patriots dynasty.
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: Right, So I don't know. That was just my my
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: thought process was like I think Randy Moss is pretty
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: because somebody had said something about, like, how much is
- 1:43:34Speaker 1: Randy Moss really associated with the Patriots, I'm like a lot.
- 1:43:37Speaker 4: Well, I'm one for Wes Welker in the Patriots Hall
- 1:43:42Speaker 4: of Fame. That one I think is a slam dunk
- 1:43:46Speaker 4: should happen.
- 1:43:47Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's Randy Moss is. It was a
- 1:43:50Speaker 3: one year. It was a great year, but it was one.
- 1:43:53Speaker 1: I don't know if they would do it at he's
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: pretty good? No nine too, I mean, I know if
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: that's the far he was pretty good nine. I don't
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: know if they would do this. I honestly don't even
- 1:44:04Speaker 1: know how I would feel about this. Should they just
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: induct the seventeam and be done with it?
- 1:44:09Speaker 3: No?
- 1:44:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I hated that as I was saying, yeah, no.
- 1:44:13Speaker 4: Corny, Yeah, I don't love the one thing about the
- 1:44:15Speaker 4: Patriots Hall of Fame that I have sort of come
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: around to, and I don't know if this is definitely
- 1:44:22Speaker 4: I don't know if we could do this, And it's
- 1:44:24Speaker 4: not to take a shot at our fans. But it's
- 1:44:27Speaker 4: a lot to put on the fans, right, But doing
- 1:44:30Speaker 4: it ballot style, like the Baseball Hall of Fame does
- 1:44:33Speaker 4: it where you have like ten to fifteen guys on
- 1:44:38Speaker 4: a ballot. Yeah, and there's a threshold, like if every
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: player gets over eighty percent, then if it's ten guys
- 1:44:44Speaker 4: that get over eighty percent, it all ten go in.
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: If it's three guys or one guy or no guys,
- 1:44:49Speaker 4: then nobody goes in. But I think that there's an
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: argument to be made that there should be multiples, but
- 1:44:57Speaker 4: they have to earn it.
- 1:44:58Speaker 3: You know what I mean.
- 1:44:58Speaker 1: I like that it's one a year. I do, and
- 1:45:01Speaker 1: I think it makes it matter more. I think it's
- 1:45:03Speaker 1: a special weekend celebrating that player, and you would lose
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: some of that.
- 1:45:08Speaker 3: There's no doubt that it's better in terms of the
- 1:45:10Speaker 3: that piece of it.
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: But that's what it's That's what it's all about.
- 1:45:13Speaker 3: To me.
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: It's about celebrating. And I don't mind, like if if
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: Robert Kraft wants to keep doing that second contributor thing
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: to like we talked about a couple of weeks ago,
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: Ernie Adams, Ivan Fears oh Man, why am I blanking
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: Nancy Meyer, Yeah, blanked on the last name. She'll get in.
- 1:45:27Speaker 1: She should get in soon. You know, people like that.
- 1:45:31Speaker 1: But I think it's specially And the other thing is
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: if you start doing multiples because you want to get
- 1:45:36Speaker 1: guys in, like eventually you are going to hit a
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: point where now we're talking about guys who maybe don't
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: deserve it, but as much.
- 1:45:43Speaker 4: But if you get into that piece of it, like
- 1:45:45Speaker 4: this way here, like you don't need to vote anybody in.
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: So I like that it's an annual thing. I don't
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to have a year where there's no
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: inductee either.
- 1:45:55Speaker 4: Okay, So that's the way I And again I'm not
- 1:45:58Speaker 4: trying to take a shot at fan right. It's just
- 1:46:02Speaker 4: like those baseball people are supposed to at least put
- 1:46:05Speaker 4: a lot of thought and research into that, and I
- 1:46:07Speaker 4: don't expect all of you guys to do that.
- 1:46:09Speaker 1: What they could maybe do is to, uh, what if
- 1:46:14Speaker 1: they is it NBA All Star Game that does this?
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: The fan voting is a third, yeah, do a media
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: vote as a third, and then that committee is a third.
- 1:46:22Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: And I guess in theory each group could vote for
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: one and you could have one, one one, But like
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: if somebody gets two thirds or all, then they're in,
- 1:46:31Speaker 1: and maybe you add other elements. Again, you couldn't have
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: three different groups with three people in the ballot. That
- 1:46:36Speaker 1: wouldn't work.
- 1:46:37Speaker 4: Or I think that this is a now problem a
- 1:46:39Speaker 4: little bit. Yeah, eventually, eventually it's gonna thin out.
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:46:43Speaker 4: Now, if Drake May and Mike Rabel put together their
- 1:46:47Speaker 4: own run here, right, then maybe it never will And.
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: That would be a great problem to have. Just super still,
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: if we have to wait, if we have to wait
- 1:46:55Speaker 1: an extra ten years for like Roberts fill Any to
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: get the Patriots Hall of Fame, so be, I was
- 1:47:01Speaker 1: trying to think of somebody who would be like that
- 1:47:03Speaker 1: fringy guy. I know that he'll be here long enough.
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: Who would be like that fringy guy, who would be
- 1:47:07Speaker 1: like the Jonathan Jones Dietrich Wise of these teams.
- 1:47:11Speaker 3: That's a good question, Marcus Jones, you said, Jones.
- 1:47:15Speaker 1: No, that's a fair one. If we have to wait
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: for like a little a little extra for Marcus Jones
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: to get in, I'm okay with that, sorry, Marcus.
- 1:47:22Speaker 4: I do so next year on the Patriots Hall of
- 1:47:24Speaker 4: Fame front it will be Devin McCarty's first year of eligibility,
- 1:47:28Speaker 4: I said yesterday, and I still feel this way. I
- 1:47:33Speaker 4: think Adam Vinitaria wins that vote.
- 1:47:35Speaker 1: I do. I do too. I'm just surprised. And then
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: Devin will get in next and then we'll live.
- 1:47:40Speaker 3: Slater High Tower.
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: So okay, Why is he not getting more love? Why
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: is Dante High Tower not getting more love with this?
- 1:47:47Speaker 3: I don't know, because I don't know that. I don't
- 1:47:49Speaker 3: know that he should have got not the fans, the ballots.
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: I have no problem with getting in over him. Yeah,
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: I frankly, Vin Terry fine. I think he's on equal
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: footing with mccordy and Slater. I know those guys maybe
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: a little bit longer, but more so like in terms
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: of like Marquee big plays in big moments, like high
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: Tower has three iconic Super Bowl perform right, the only
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: thing those guys have over him is longevity. High Tower
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: tackles Marshawn Lynch with his one arm, one arm at
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: the goal, a little bit of help from a keeym
- 1:48:28Speaker 1: Air shout out of key Airs.
- 1:48:29Speaker 4: Strip sacks Matt Ryan and super Bowl fifty one to start,
- 1:48:34Speaker 4: or you know, big part of the twenty eight to
- 1:48:36Speaker 4: three comeback. Basically, like I would say the starting point
- 1:48:39Speaker 4: of the twenty eight to three comeback, it's him and
- 1:48:40Speaker 4: Trey Flowers could have been Super Bowl MVP of Super
- 1:48:44Speaker 4: Bowl fifty three.
- 1:48:46Speaker 3: Like had a just dominant performance against the Rams.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: Yeah, he didn't have the one play, but was just
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: a huge part of all the right way, the five,
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: the six to one, the way they structured that game
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: plan offensively was all because they had one guy in
- 1:49:03Speaker 1: the middle of the field that they could stop the
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: run in the interior run with one guy. No, he
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: had the pressure too on the did Now it was
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: a blitz, it was it was it all out on
- 1:49:14Speaker 1: the interception. But who was right in his face one.
- 1:49:17Speaker 3: Of the DB's. I can't remember which one it was.
- 1:49:19Speaker 3: It was a It was a I remember like it
- 1:49:21Speaker 3: was yesterday. It was a trail bullets, two guys through
- 1:49:24Speaker 3: the the B gap running back and.
- 1:49:27Speaker 1: Only take one or was it the Maybe I'm thinking.
- 1:49:30Speaker 4: He had a He had like five pressures in the game,
- 1:49:32Speaker 4: a bunch of study, a bunch of stuff going on
- 1:49:35Speaker 4: up front with him in that game.
- 1:49:37Speaker 3: He was dominant in that game. He was awesome. Yeah,
- 1:49:40Speaker 3: he didn't I don't know.
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: I I think he should have more of a k
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: I think he is one of the most dominant players
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: this franchise.
- 1:49:49Speaker 3: I got a finger waged for saying that was it.
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: That was it? The Cooks drop in the back of
- 1:49:53Speaker 1: the end zone that maybe I'm thinking of could be?
- 1:49:57Speaker 3: Could be?
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: I he had a great game. He was he was
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: one of his better performances. He was dominant in that game.
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: So really three super Bowls that he was a lynchpin,
- 1:50:07Speaker 4: like he was a true needed to have him or
- 1:50:10Speaker 4: they would have lost the game type of player. I'm
- 1:50:13Speaker 4: the biggest Dante high Tower fan, But like we had
- 1:50:16Speaker 4: this thing, you know, with Seymour, a little bit with
- 1:50:19Speaker 4: will Fork in terms of the Pro Football Hall of Fame,
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: Like if you don't actually look at all the little
- 1:50:24Speaker 4: things that they do, and if you don't put like
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: enough of an emphasis on that, if you don't care
- 1:50:29Speaker 4: enough about the fact that Vince Wilfork would eat like
- 1:50:32Speaker 4: three blocks, you know, and let somebody else make a play,
- 1:50:35Speaker 4: or Richard Seymour would two gap and like tur the
- 1:50:38Speaker 4: back and make the back go elsewhere and the other
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: someone else would make the play, or hot high Tower
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: would meet like a poler or a lead blocker and
- 1:50:46Speaker 4: smash that guy and that would, you know, cause a
- 1:50:49Speaker 4: domino ripple effect that would blow up a play. Like
- 1:50:52Speaker 4: if you don't, if that stuff doesn't move you, if
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: that doesn't move the needle for you, then like you're
- 1:50:56Speaker 4: not gonna see the the greatness, Like you're not gonna
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: you're not gonna get.
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: He's just an unbelievable player. Also, it was Kyle Vannoy
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: and Danny Shelton and Jared goss kyviny.
- 1:51:07Speaker 3: Had a really good game that day.
- 1:51:08Speaker 4: To uh, this is a football question that we have
- 1:51:15Speaker 4: some calls that we can wrap it up with.
- 1:51:16Speaker 12: Uh.
- 1:51:17Speaker 4: So this is from Andrew, He asked, Uh, people keep
- 1:51:21Speaker 4: saying that Jared Wilson's natural position is center because he
- 1:51:24Speaker 4: doesn't have the power to play guard. It doesn't make
- 1:51:27Speaker 4: sense to me that power is less important at center.
- 1:51:30Speaker 3: What is it about center that makes it less a.
- 1:51:32Speaker 4: Varunable to opposing DT's collapsing the pocket with raw power.
- 1:51:36Speaker 4: So I think it's a couple of different things with center.
- 1:51:39Speaker 4: The first thing is is that fewer and fewer teams
- 1:51:42Speaker 4: line and nose tackle head up over the center anymore.
- 1:51:45Speaker 4: So like having a guy that's lined up directly over
- 1:51:47Speaker 4: the center, that's just trying to bull rush the center
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: is becoming a less and less frequent way to distribute
- 1:51:54Speaker 4: your your your people, your chess pieces, so there's less
- 1:51:59Speaker 4: of that going on the league.
- 1:52:00Speaker 3: I would say there's also less double.
- 1:52:03Speaker 4: Teams and like movement, Like you're not necessarily asking the
- 1:52:07Speaker 4: center to like get on a combo or get on
- 1:52:10Speaker 4: a double as much as you are at asking a
- 1:52:13Speaker 4: guard and a tackle to do that. So the center
- 1:52:16Speaker 4: is kind of usually all these things are sort of
- 1:52:19Speaker 4: adding up. He's usually there's usually nobody head up over him,
- 1:52:24Speaker 4: so he's kind of a free player in the middle there.
- 1:52:27Speaker 4: So there's a little bit more flexibility for the center,
- 1:52:29Speaker 4: a little bit more freedom for the center. It's not
- 1:52:31Speaker 4: as much of a car crash at times for the
- 1:52:34Speaker 4: center than it is at guard.
- 1:52:36Speaker 3: Guard has a lot of one on one.
- 1:52:38Speaker 4: Responsibility and especially pass bocking because of how many teams
- 1:52:42Speaker 4: utilize the three technique, Like the guy that's shaded into
- 1:52:45Speaker 4: the b gap is a three technique. The center usually
- 1:52:48Speaker 4: has help or usually has the guard next to him,
- 1:52:51Speaker 4: or sometimes is not covered up at all, so there's
- 1:52:54Speaker 4: a lot less so that like immediate raw power. Car
- 1:52:57Speaker 4: crash going on at the center, So that's why the
- 1:53:00Speaker 4: power thing is kind of mitigated just a little bit
- 1:53:03Speaker 4: at that position. Senators are usually athletic, like you usually
- 1:53:06Speaker 4: want them to be a little bit more under size,
- 1:53:08Speaker 4: a little bit athletic.
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: Because's a lot of movement that's getting up. You can
- 1:53:12Speaker 1: pull them.
- 1:53:13Speaker 3: Yeah, a lot of that stuff going on. All right,
- 1:53:15Speaker 3: a couple more calls here, we're going to wrap it up.
- 1:53:17Speaker 3: CJ is on the line. What's up, CJ?
- 1:53:20Speaker 6: Hey, what's up?
- 1:53:21Speaker 8: Guys?
- 1:53:21Speaker 5: A quick question for you.
- 1:53:23Speaker 6: I know last season it was a surprise, I think
- 1:53:26Speaker 6: to most of for the Patriots to do as well
- 1:53:29Speaker 6: as they did make it all the way to the
- 1:53:30Speaker 6: Super Bowl. And I on the flip side of that,
- 1:53:32Speaker 6: I think it was a surprise for a lot of
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: people to see the Chiefs do as bad as they did.
- 1:53:38Speaker 6: Who do you guys think is going to be us
- 1:53:39Speaker 6: a surprise this year?
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: Up or down?
- 1:53:43Speaker 4: Surprise team this year? That's what you're asking. Yeah, okay,
- 1:53:46Speaker 4: so I've heard things of the call, CJ. I've heard
- 1:53:48Speaker 4: a lot of buzz about the Giants.
- 1:53:50Speaker 1: I'm not sure it depends how much a believer you
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: are in Jackson Dart. They have a nice product around
- 1:53:55Speaker 1: him and they have a good coach now. But right,
- 1:53:57Speaker 1: but if you're not a believer in him, kind of
- 1:54:00Speaker 1: tapers it. I'll say this, if you want to look
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: at the team that it feels like tried to mirror
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: what the Patriots did last year the most, it's the Titans.
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: And again that comes down to how much do you
- 1:54:09Speaker 1: believe in cam Ward or Robert Sali or Robert Solid
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: But oh yeah, okay, fair, you know they went out,
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: they invested. That's a spot I think they should be
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: calling Stefan Diggs. You know, they've upgraded their defense a
- 1:54:26Speaker 1: little bit. They play in a very weak division. They're
- 1:54:29Speaker 1: gonna have a week schedule. Like I look at the
- 1:54:32Speaker 1: Titans as maybe being like this year's Patriots.
- 1:54:34Speaker 3: Okay, I have one more team for you.
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: Okay, we should do a surprise down team. So this
- 1:54:38Speaker 1: is a very surprise one. That's kind of this is
- 1:54:41Speaker 1: like a hot maybe not a hot take, but like
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: gold prediction, this is gonna make me angry. I kind
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: of like what the Raiders did this offseason. Yeah, that
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: would be another one, so.
- 1:54:50Speaker 4: Fair klink Kubiak, I believe in Yeah, as an offensive mind,
- 1:54:53Speaker 4: I don't know as a head coach yet.
- 1:54:55Speaker 1: It's another team that's called Diggs.
- 1:54:56Speaker 4: Fernando Mendoza. I believe in Yeap genty Bowers. They upgraded
- 1:55:02Speaker 4: their offensive line with linder Baum at center, which is
- 1:55:05Speaker 4: always good for a young quarterback.
- 1:55:08Speaker 3: They might.
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: I don't know if they have the pieces yet on defense,
- 1:55:11Speaker 4: but the Max Crosby trade actually falling through was kind
- 1:55:13Speaker 4: of a blessing and disconnise for them.
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: So they still have Max. If Tamal McCoy stays healthy.
- 1:55:18Speaker 1: They got a top ten talent in the fourth round.
- 1:55:20Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see if he stays healthy.
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: It's a big if.
- 1:55:22Speaker 4: But I like what the Raiders have done. Are they
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: ready to go from four and thirteen to fourteen and three?
- 1:55:28Speaker 4: Maybe it's a little bit more of a of a
- 1:55:31Speaker 4: like they take a step and then another.
- 1:55:33Speaker 3: Step for them. But if Mendoza is a franchise quarterback
- 1:55:37Speaker 3: like the Colts citing with Andrew Luck, like, if that's
- 1:55:39Speaker 3: if he's that good, you know, then they have a chance,
- 1:55:42Speaker 3: I think to be a surprise teams.
- 1:55:44Speaker 1: You're surprised doing worst team.
- 1:55:46Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 1:55:48Speaker 1: I am surprised. You don't have an instant answer for
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: that because there's a team that you don't like that
- 1:55:52Speaker 1: added interesting offseason.
- 1:55:55Speaker 3: A team I don't like that had interesting offseason.
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: I was gonna say bad. Then I remember the trade
- 1:56:00Speaker 1: for receiver who is the Broncos.
- 1:56:02Speaker 3: That's true, but they traded for jay On Waddell.
- 1:56:05Speaker 1: It's a good That's why I paused, But like, yeah,
- 1:56:07Speaker 1: where's Sean Payton bow Knicks, where's that thing at? Yeah?
- 1:56:11Speaker 4: And you know, not that I'm rooting for him to
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: get hurt, but apparently like he had like another cleanup
- 1:56:15Speaker 4: procedure on his ankle. They're they're they're saying that it
- 1:56:18Speaker 4: was part of the process.
- 1:56:20Speaker 3: But that's never good.
- 1:56:22Speaker 1: Remember like bo Knicks gave a separate press conference where
- 1:56:24Speaker 1: he's like unhappy. How Sean Payton talked about the injury.
- 1:56:27Speaker 3: And a good one.
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: Then they fired the offensive coordinator even though Sean Payton
- 1:56:30Speaker 1: was the play caller. There's just there's a weird thing
- 1:56:34Speaker 1: going on around that team right now. I don't know if.
- 1:56:36Speaker 4: It's necessarily a great answer, but like Jacksonville to me
- 1:56:41Speaker 4: constantly is going up and down.
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: Jacksonville even I know they went thirteen or four thirteen names. Yeah,
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: it was an underwe yeah, all right, Jacksonville is a
- 1:56:48Speaker 1: fair one.
- 1:56:48Speaker 4: I just feel like that team in general, that organization
- 1:56:51Speaker 4: is always like they have the Doug Peterson yere where
- 1:56:54Speaker 4: they have to come back against the Chargers in the
- 1:56:56Speaker 4: playoffs and then they're right back in the bottom.
- 1:56:58Speaker 1: Jacksonville is a good one. And then I would put, uh,
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: I'll put Chicago on there, of course you will. I
- 1:57:03Speaker 1: don't know.
- 1:57:04Speaker 3: I just.
- 1:57:06Speaker 1: Let's see if they I put the Bears where I
- 1:57:08Speaker 1: put the Patriots, like they could be a better team
- 1:57:10Speaker 1: with the worst record. They're they're gonna have a lot
- 1:57:13Speaker 1: more of a target on their back. Now.
- 1:57:15Speaker 4: I feel pretty good about all these other teams honestly,
- 1:57:17Speaker 4: Like I just think Houston, like I worried about their
- 1:57:20Speaker 4: offense and stroud, but their defense is.
- 1:57:22Speaker 1: Their defense is so good. They're going to be a
- 1:57:24Speaker 1: pain in the ass to play every week. The Rams
- 1:57:26Speaker 1: are obviously always going to it's gonna be good. Yeah, uh, Buffalo,
- 1:57:31Speaker 1: I know you would love that. I mean I say
- 1:57:33Speaker 1: it every year that they're due for a bit of
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: a backslide, So I feel like it doesn't mean anything
- 1:57:37Speaker 1: anymore when I say it.
- 1:57:38Speaker 3: There's a chance Joe Brady is not a good coach.
- 1:57:40Speaker 1: There's a very good no. I mean there's a chance
- 1:57:42Speaker 1: again that although they kind of back flowed last year,
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: so but they had it's already kind of started.
- 1:57:46Speaker 3: As much as he couldn't get them over the hump,
- 1:57:48Speaker 3: they had a floor with McDermott. Yeah, they we don't
- 1:57:51Speaker 3: know what you're.
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: Talking about, like potentially missing the playoffs. We don't know
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: what the floor is with Joe. Brady's never coached before.
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: It means a lot more coming from you than me.
- 1:57:57Speaker 1: So I'll just let you say it.
- 1:57:58Speaker 3: I didn't if I say it, I don't love what
- 1:58:00Speaker 3: they're doing.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: But I don't either, But when I say it, people
- 1:58:03Speaker 1: are just like, oh, Barth hates the bills and the
- 1:58:05Speaker 1: hater when you say it holds weight.
- 1:58:07Speaker 3: So I'm just gonna just a weird it's a weird build.
- 1:58:09Speaker 4: It's a and maybe DJ Moore ends up going back
- 1:58:12Speaker 4: to being like DJ Moore of like the end of Carolina,
- 1:58:15Speaker 4: early Chicago Dj Moore, uh, and that would help a lot.
- 1:58:19Speaker 4: But it's just been kind of a weird build for them.
- 1:58:21Speaker 4: Like I don't know, I'm just not I'm on the
- 1:58:24Speaker 4: fence about that one.
- 1:58:25Speaker 3: Maybe, Josh.
- 1:58:26Speaker 4: The only thing I would say that you'll hate there's
- 1:58:29Speaker 4: a chance that Josh Allen's just too good to stink like.
- 1:58:32Speaker 4: He might just be so good that he they're a
- 1:58:35Speaker 4: five hundred plus team no matter what. So you're saying, like,
- 1:58:37Speaker 4: what if he's Philip Rivers, I'm saying that he might
- 1:58:40Speaker 4: be too good to described Philip Rivers. I'm saying you might
- 1:58:42Speaker 4: be just described. All right, let's take this last call, Um,
- 1:58:45Speaker 4: we gotta go. Uh Sam's in North Carolina.
- 1:58:47Speaker 3: What's up? Sam?
- 1:58:48Speaker 5: What's fellas bar? The way you just flipped hilarious?
- 1:58:52Speaker 1: Hey, but if.
- 1:58:55Speaker 5: Desmond Bain and Mikail Bridges went for five first round picks,
- 1:58:58Speaker 5: what could you get for Jaylen Brown? Because I mean
- 1:59:01Speaker 5: the time, you know, you got to ship out of it.
- 1:59:04Speaker 5: I think this kind of ran his course and I'll
- 1:59:07Speaker 5: take it off the area for one last question.
- 1:59:08Speaker 3: Thanks Sam.
- 1:59:09Speaker 4: I love that we just got a basketball called at
- 1:59:12Speaker 4: Celtics call I uh so my Jalen Brown trade. I'm
- 1:59:17Speaker 4: not I'm not super big on Giannis. I'm not talent wise.
- 1:59:21Speaker 4: Is the best player you can get, no doubt, right,
- 1:59:23Speaker 4: But he's thirty two, he's always hurt.
- 1:59:25Speaker 1: Not really a center. He's gonna come here and play center.
- 1:59:28Speaker 3: But he's gonna be like a small ball center here.
- 1:59:30Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:59:30Speaker 4: I really kind of like the idea of bam Adebayo.
- 1:59:34Speaker 4: I I like Bam bff of Jason Tatum's. Yeah, he's
- 1:59:38Speaker 4: added a three point shot to his game now. He
- 1:59:40Speaker 4: scored like one hundred points this season, so he can
- 1:59:43Speaker 4: stretch the four a little bit. But he knows how
- 1:59:45Speaker 4: to do the dirty work. He knows how to protect
- 1:59:46Speaker 4: the rim, he knows how to rebound, he knows how
- 1:59:48Speaker 4: to catch lobs. Like he's like kind of he's a
- 1:59:52Speaker 4: great fit with Tatum. I need is a great fit
- 1:59:54Speaker 4: with Tatum. I need to get over the fact that
- 1:59:56Speaker 4: he's a six to ninth center because I'm old school
- 1:59:58Speaker 4: like that. But like, yeah, but he can no, he
- 2:00:01Speaker 4: can play. That would be and you'd probably get more back.
- 2:00:03Speaker 4: He'd probably be what Bam and a couple of picks.
- 2:00:05Speaker 3: And he's only twenty eight.
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: He's only twenty eight. Yeah, wow, yahize that maybe you
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: can get a guard from them too, because they need
- 2:00:11Speaker 1: like a distributing guard as well.
- 2:00:12Speaker 4: I mean, I would love to find a way to
- 2:00:14Speaker 4: get Bam here with both of them, but he's a
- 2:00:17Speaker 4: max contract guy.
- 2:00:18Speaker 3: It's not gonna happen.
- 2:00:19Speaker 1: So so he'd be BAM and picks.
- 2:00:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: What was the other one I was texting about last night?
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: Oh the terrible one Jamal Murray were pissed. Now can
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: you get Jamal Murr Who and No? And they had
- 2:00:27Speaker 1: a set in Valanchounis.
- 2:00:29Speaker 3: Oh god, the guy. They literally couldn't play him in
- 2:00:31Speaker 3: their playing.
- 2:00:31Speaker 1: That's a little more horses for ponies. They'll give you that. No,
- 2:00:33Speaker 1: I would take BAM. I would Bam would be cool.
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: Bam would be cool. I think he'd be a great
- 2:00:37Speaker 1: fit for what they have. He'd add what they need.
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: Very I think I'd rather have Jayalen Brown. Yeah, let
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: me be personally clear about that. If they have to
- 2:00:46Speaker 1: trade him. But if Jalen Brown wants out, yeah, I
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: mean BAM plus picks or probably you're talking about straight
- 2:00:53Speaker 1: up or maybe picks going back for Giannis.
- 2:00:56Speaker 4: I would like to think though that he brought up
- 2:00:58Speaker 4: Desmond Band and Michel Bridges. I would like to think
- 2:01:00Speaker 4: that the Celtics would make that trade to add somebody
- 2:01:03Speaker 4: like that to Tatum. So so this thing like if
- 2:01:06Speaker 4: you're not getting a player, yeah, you're getting like the
- 2:01:09Speaker 4: most you can get. I would hope that I'm saying though,
- 2:01:12Speaker 4: as I would hope that what's on the table is
- 2:01:15Speaker 4: trying to do that trade to get somebody to play
- 2:01:19Speaker 4: with the Jays, not to trade out Jalen Brown. But like,
- 2:01:22Speaker 4: if you're trading out Jalen Brown, you're probably trading him
- 2:01:25Speaker 4: for you, honest.
- 2:01:25Speaker 1: Well, unless they see it as like a maybe there's
- 2:01:28Speaker 1: a guy they really like in the draft and it's okay,
- 2:01:30Speaker 1: we're gonna have one less guy for this year, you know,
- 2:01:32Speaker 1: use that money signed somebody to one year deal and
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: then we're gonna try to go go, go and get
- 2:01:36Speaker 1: your your Porzingis trade and how many picks for Cooper
- 2:01:40Speaker 1: flag your boy? Would you do it?
- 2:01:42Speaker 3: All Right? That's enough.
- 2:01:43Speaker 4: That's enough of that, all right, Thanks for the Celtics call.
- 2:01:46Speaker 4: I really that was awesome. That meant a lot to me.
- 2:01:48Speaker 4: That that really told me that that we we we
- 2:01:51Speaker 4: we nailed it with our Celtics talk. All right, we'll
