- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. I'm Lucas. Luna: And I'm Luna. Episode 76! Can you believe it? Lucas: I know, we've come a long way. Today I thought we'd do something practical — ordering coffee at a cafe. Luna: Oh, I love coffee. But I always get confused when the menu is in Malay. Like, what's the difference between kopi and kopi susu? Lucas: Great question. Let's start with the basics. The word for coffee is kopi. Say it with me: kopi. Luna: Kopi. Lucas: Perfect. And milk is susu. Susu. Luna: Susu. Lucas: Now, if you want coffee with milk, you say kopi susu. Kopi susu. Luna: Kopi susu. That's easy — it's just coffee plus milk. Lucas: Exactly. And if you want to add sugar, the word is gula. Gula. Luna: Gula. So kopi susu gula would be coffee with milk and sugar? Lucas: Right. But a lot of people like less sugar. To say 'less sugar', it's kurang gula. Kurang gula. Luna: Kurang gula. So if I want a coffee with milk and less sugar, I'd say... Saya mahu kopi susu kurang gula? Lucas: Yes! Perfect. Saya mahu kopi susu kurang gula. Let's break it down: Saya mahu — I want. Kopi susu — coffee with milk. Kurang gula — less sugar. Luna: Saya mahu kopi susu kurang gula. I love that phrase. Lucas: Let's practice a few variations. If you want just black coffee, you say kopi kosong. Kosong means empty or plain. Kopi kosong. Luna: Kopi kosong. So that's coffee without milk and sugar? Lucas: Exactly. And if you want a little sugar, you could say kopi kosong sikit gula. Sikit means a little. Luna: Ooh, that's handy. Kopi kosong sikit gula. Lucas: Great. Now let's pretend we're at a cafe. I'm the server. You come up and say...? Luna: Saya mahu kopi susu kurang gula. Lucas: Excellent! 'Satu kopi susu kurang gula. Nak apa lagi?' That means 'One coffee with milk, less sugar. Anything else?' Luna: Tak nak, terima kasih. No, thank you. Lucas: Perfect. You just ordered coffee like a local. Luna: It feels good. I might actually use that tomorrow. Lucas: You should. And speaking of things that feel good — if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with Malay, maybe consider supporting the show. It's ad-free because of listeners like you. Luna: Yeah, it really helps us keep going. If today's lesson was worth a coffee to you, you can find us at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Lucas: Exactly. Every bit helps. Now, back to ordering — what if you want to ask for a smaller size? Luna: Ooh, is there a word for that? Lucas: Yes. Small is kecil. So you could say kopi susu kecil — small coffee with milk. Luna: Kopi susu kecil. Great. And large? Lucas: Besar. Kopi susu besar. Luna: Kopi susu besar. So I can say 'Saya mahu kopi susu besar kurang gula.' Lucas: Perfect sentence. Let's practice that one more time. Luna: Saya mahu kopi susu besar kurang gula. Lucas: Nailed it. Today we learned kopi, susu, gula, kopi susu, kurang gula, kopi kosong, sikit, kecil, and besar. That's a lot for one episode, but you've got this. Luna: I feel ready to order at any cafe in Malaysia now. Lucas: That's the goal. Practice these phrases, and next time you'll be even more confident. Until then, selamat belajar — happy learning! Luna: Bye bye!
