- 0:00Speaker 1: Doctor Josh Davis, veterinarian friend. Doctor Davis is here to
- 0:03answer your questions about your puppies and your kiddies, and
- 0:07so if you have questions about the health of your pets,
- 0:10please call us and doctor Davis. Morning, Good morning.
- 0:13Speaker 2: How's it going good?
- 0:15Speaker 1: So is there anything we should be aware of our
- 0:17pets at the holiday season? The things that they you
- 0:22got to be aware of or worried about or.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Yes, definitely, I was actually hoping we could mention some
- 0:28of those things.
- 0:29Speaker 1: So sea I read, but the only minds I can
- 0:32read are the minds of veterinarians.
- 0:34Speaker 2: All right, I think that's a good skill.
- 0:36Speaker 3: To have, superhero level probably, But no, we already kind
- 0:40of made it through Thanksgiving holiday, and personally, I saw
- 0:43a couple of end results of that.
- 0:46Speaker 2: So a lot of.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Pets getting food they shouldn't be getting, so that is
- 0:49a big watch out.
- 0:51Speaker 2: They can get really sick from that. So you know,
- 0:53what are some of the food items that they you
- 0:55should avoid? Pretty much anything people food. I know we're
- 0:59going to do it anyway.
- 1:00Speaker 3: But high fat stuff is really a big problem. So
- 1:03it can cause a lot of vomiting, diarrhea, and dogs
- 1:05specifically can get pinkrea titus, which can be life threatening
- 1:08if they get it severe enough.
- 1:09Speaker 2: So food items really really be careful.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But my cat loves mashed potatoes and grainy they love it.
- 1:15Speaker 3: Yeah they do, but I mean it keeps me in
- 1:18business after the holidays. But you know, I'd rather not
- 1:20see your pets for that kind of stuff. So and
- 1:23then the other thing we see a lot with cats,
- 1:25sometimes with dogs too, but ornaments and things around the house.
- 1:30They love to eat those, They love to swallow those.
- 1:32So if you own cats, I really really would be
- 1:36careful about tinsels and ribbons and all of that kind
- 1:38of stuff because they they will eat it and swallow
- 1:41it and then they'll end up in.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Surgery to save their life. So watch points the plants
- 1:47around the house.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Point settas can be toxic, lilies can be toxic if
- 1:50you have those around. And then dogs, you know they'll
- 1:53eat anything. So yeah, your ornaments, your presence, So just
- 1:56really be careful about that kind of stuff because it
- 1:58can be a really big problem around this time of year.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I haven't gonna have to tell Klaus my cat, no
- 2:05no stuffing this year, No more stuffing for you. Six
- 2:10zero two ninety six ninety six. Any questions yet.
- 2:14Speaker 4: Yeah, I do have people on the line, but I
- 2:16actually had a question for doctor Davis first. If that's okay,
- 2:19go ahead, Nick, I'm back here at the studio with
- 2:22my Bassett hound at the moment. Who the other day
- 2:25I noticed on the equivalent of like her elbow, a
- 2:29skin tag coming out of her fur. That's large enough.
- 2:32It's like semi vascular. Is that something I should be worried.
- 2:35Speaker 2: About or it's a it's not.
- 2:38Speaker 4: It looks like something that would grow off of like
- 2:40a chickens gizzard.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah, and those kind of growths are They're very common
- 2:46as pets get older, and elbows or places of.
- 2:49Speaker 2: Contact like that are very common most of the time.
- 2:51Speaker 3: They've been nine but I would say that they do
- 2:55keep growing most of the time. So it's not about
- 2:57idea to get them removed during a teeth cleaning or
- 3:00something simple like that, because you do need downassim most
- 3:02of the time for that.
- 3:03Speaker 4: So have it checked out, Nick, Okay, I'll get.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Don't stop touching it.
- 3:08Speaker 6: Right.
- 3:09Speaker 1: One call.
- 3:10Speaker 4: Let's take a quick I got Selena on the line.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Selena, and what what's your question? And what's your pet's name?
- 3:18Speaker 7: I have a brand new rescue wattweiler named Zena.
- 3:22Speaker 8: And I'm just trying to forgot what the best type
- 3:24of dogwood is for such a big breed.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Well, good question.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, that is a good question, especially with the Roddy's.
- 3:30Speaker 3: They are prone to overweight and obesity if you're not careful.
- 3:34So how old are we with Sina?
- 3:37Speaker 7: She is three years old?
- 3:40Speaker 2: Three years old, three old.
- 3:41Speaker 3: Good, So we're just normal adult age at this point.
- 3:43So I would just find a good quality adult maintenance food.
- 3:48Speaker 2: So there there are many brands out there.
- 3:50Speaker 3: The veterinary brands we like are like the Hills, Sance
- 3:52Diet and Royal Canaan Purina pro Plan. Those are all
- 3:56good quality foods and just a good adult maintenance. Now,
- 3:59if we are overweight already, then I would probably go
- 4:02with a more of a weight management type of food.
- 4:04And then we just want to feed them a set
- 4:07amount of food every day on a schedule, and you'll
- 4:09have much more success.
- 4:10Speaker 7: With that, all right, Right, And there's there's a thing
- 4:14is that she gets.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and food is often the reason for that. The
- 4:23digestibility is often the factor in that. So better quality, well,
- 4:26it costs you more over time. You tend to feed
- 4:28less because they get more out of it.
- 4:30Speaker 1: So you have to buy it at the veterinarian's office.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Yeah, if their prescription. Yeah, but yeah, you can get
- 4:38that any any good food story.
- 4:40Speaker 5: Yeah, all right, thank you very much, thank you. All right,
- 4:45let's continue Questions for a Veterinarian Josh Davis.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Eight seven seven six zero two nine six nine six.
- 4:52But I think we have people holding on the phone.
- 4:54Speaker 5: Yes, we do, but we also have live questions.
- 4:57Speaker 1: One check at Nick. We're gonna do a live questionmaire,
- 4:59and we'll we'll get your question. Ask of doctor Davis.
- 5:03You off to lean in here. What is your name?
- 5:05Speaker 9: My name is Scutchy Blake. I have a seven year
- 5:10old toy labordoodle named Remiss Jay Lupin, and he has
- 5:15a habit of constantly looking as pause. We've tried different
- 5:20types of washes and shoes and vitamins and stuff like that,
- 5:23and nothing seems to help him except just kind of
- 5:25shaming him by telling him he's during Yeah, any.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Advice, Yes, that that is unfortunately, super super common with
- 5:34a lot of dogs. So most of the time that's
- 5:36either going to stem from a food allergy.
- 5:40Speaker 2: Least amount of the time and then often.
- 5:42Speaker 3: They can have what's called allergic dermatitis, or where they
- 5:44can be allergic to many things in the environment. So
- 5:48topical therapies medicated shampoos, leavin mooses, or conditioners can be helpful.
- 5:54But there are also some really good prescription diets to
- 5:57help with that, and then for some cases even medical
- 6:00therapy on top of those other things can be beneficial.
- 6:03So there are some some very good medications, very safe medication.
- 6:06Speaker 1: So what was that one you told.
- 6:07Speaker 5: Me to get that moose stuff?
- 6:09Speaker 8: What was that?
- 6:10Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a it's a shampoo moose. It's Duoso S
- 6:13three pio.
- 6:14Speaker 3: That's one the dermatologists rave about, and it's it's very
- 6:17good to use in combination.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And I thought that Paul licking was caused by childhood trauma.
- 6:22Speaker 2: It could be for some of them. Yeah, no, it's
- 6:25it's never normal and it's often allergic related on some levels.
- 6:30So yeah, there you go, Thank you, Blake.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Go to the phones.
- 6:32Speaker 5: Now, Yes, who do we have?
- 6:33Speaker 4: Yeah? I got Natalie on the line.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Natalie. Hello, Natalie, what's your what, what do you what
- 6:38kind of animal do you have? And what's its name?
- 6:41Speaker 7: Hi you guys, Happy holidays, Thank you, So I have
- 6:46two boy cats. Their names of Porky and Wigi.
- 6:49Speaker 6: Uh huh, and.
- 6:53Speaker 7: They were like best friends and just all of a
- 6:55sudden one day, Porky woke up and decided he wants
- 6:58to kill Wigi and he ate them, and.
- 7:02Speaker 2: Like what he did?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Why would that happen well?
- 7:11Speaker 2: With cats?
- 7:12Speaker 3: Honestly, there could be probably a bajillion different reasons. Often though,
- 7:16it ties back to something stressful in a lot of situations,
- 7:21or as cats get older too, they can develop pain,
- 7:25arthritic pain, other pain, and so sometimes pain is the
- 7:28core issue and then their response is a change in
- 7:31behavior from that. So really really important to decide did
- 7:36something change, has something become a different stress for them?
- 7:40New home, new kid, knew anything really for cats, even
- 7:45cats running around outside can bother your indoor.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Cats and cause behavior changes.
- 7:48Speaker 3: So but if they're older too, it's worth getting health
- 7:51check and making sure they're they're they're healthy, no pain
- 7:54or anything like that.
- 7:55Speaker 7: Okay, they're they're indoor cats, but like like I've had
- 8:00their shots and stuff like that, they haven't been neutered, so.
- 8:04Speaker 2: That could be a part of it too. Yeah, if
- 8:06they're still intact, make them own intact yep.
- 8:10Speaker 7: Right, do you think that would way after I get it,
- 8:13get them newtered.
- 8:15Speaker 3: It's not a guarantee, but it's it's a chance for that.
- 8:18And also the boycats again, their territorialness can go down
- 8:23after neuter so but the older they are going to
- 8:25get neutered, that it gets if ye or if you're
- 8:27going to get that result. But I think it's worth
- 8:29doing either way for other health reasons.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Thanks for calling you later.
- 8:32Speaker 7: Okay, thank you guys.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Bid all right, anymore calls?
- 8:36Speaker 10: Nick?
- 8:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I got easy on the way. All right?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Is he go ahead?
- 8:40Speaker 1: Hello?
- 8:40Speaker 6: Is hi?
- 8:43Speaker 7: Hi?
- 8:44Speaker 10: Is he?
- 8:44Speaker 1: What's what's your animal name? And what's your question?
- 8:49Speaker 8: My cat is Na Minky and I have two questions.
- 8:54So one question is he has a sore on his
- 8:56arm that he's had for like probably six months. Yeah,
- 9:01it's like an open wound, and we've taken him to
- 9:03the vet. He given them a shot and it still
- 9:05hasn't healed up, and that's been probably six weeks ago.
- 9:10And then the second question I have is he's always
- 9:13like has tummy problems. He's always diarrhea or throwing up,
- 9:18but his belly is hard and like very bloated all
- 9:22the time, and it has been for probably a year.
- 9:27Speaker 3: Yeah, and those those two things could be related if
- 9:30there is a diet related problem, food allergy problem, something
- 9:33like that.
- 9:34Speaker 2: So if the bloating would.
- 9:36Speaker 3: Concern me, and so I do think it's worth doing
- 9:40some extra work on that. So some blood work, maybe
- 9:42some X rays, and then have a good discussion about
- 9:45a different diet probably to start with, and then we
- 9:48can see if that wound will heal up with the
- 9:50diet therapy and if not, sometimes a biopsy is necessary
- 9:54to get you on the right path for the skin thing.
- 9:55But they could be related. In some cases they are.
- 9:58Speaker 1: So get to your vet.
- 10:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I get that stuff checked out. The gi stuff
- 10:02is really important for cats.
- 10:04Speaker 1: All Right, thanks Jerzy.
- 10:06Speaker 8: Okay, thank you, Thanks Juzy.
- 10:08Speaker 4: All Right, anybody else, sir Nick, we're lining up another
- 10:11call at the moment.
- 10:12Speaker 5: Okay, Well, we've got a text question here. I have
- 10:15a six year old Frenchie. She's pretty gurgly as Frenchies are.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Noisy dog is the bulldog?
- 10:22Speaker 1: Little French bulldog? Is that what that is?
- 10:24Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 10:26Speaker 5: Yeah, when would you recommend the palette surgery and what
- 10:30does the recovery look like?
- 10:33Speaker 3: The palette surgery it really does depend on how severe
- 10:37their disease is. They get what's called breaky cephalic syndrome,
- 10:41So the pallet, the soft palate is just one part
- 10:43of that. So you probably want to get assessed by
- 10:46a surgeon who does that and then see, you know,
- 10:49is the palette in need of repair and are the
- 10:51other components of that, because they are actually four components
- 10:54to that syndrome, so you may need to fix more
- 10:56than one, and recovery can be really difficult withdwelling and
- 11:01issues with breathing if they swallow too much.
- 11:03Speaker 2: So you know, I'd really urge you.
- 11:05Speaker 3: To see a specialist if you're going to do that
- 11:06concurgery because it's very invasive and there are risks to it.
- 11:10Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, there you go. We got a phone call, Nick,
- 11:14We got a phone call.
- 11:15Speaker 4: Yeah, let's talk to Chris.
- 11:17Speaker 9: Hi.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Chris hi, Hi. What's your animal? And what's his name?
- 11:21And the question?
- 11:23Speaker 6: We have a puggle named Pepsi. He's really old.
- 11:28Speaker 1: What's what? What breath? What is? It's a pug? And
- 11:31a what.
- 11:36Speaker 6: It looks like a minister grade Dane?
- 11:38Speaker 1: Okay, and what's bugles problem?
- 11:43Speaker 6: Well, it's kind of my problem. I'm kind of allergic
- 11:46and he but he loves to stip right next to
- 11:48me and sleep in my spot on the bed. Is
- 11:51there kind of some spray that I could spray on
- 11:54my side of.
- 11:54Speaker 1: The bed, so wearing axe body spray quick?
- 12:00Speaker 3: No, often you're going to be allergic to either their
- 12:03dand or sometimes saliva with pets, and so.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Keeping them clean. So regular bathing.
- 12:08Speaker 3: For the dog can help reduce the allergens that are
- 12:11carried on the surface of their skin.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And then no simple.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Spray as far as I know of. And there are
- 12:18some diets. I know they have them for cats. I'd
- 12:20have to see if them for dogs. But you can
- 12:22actually feed them specific special diets where it makes them
- 12:26less allergenic to people around them too, But I'm not
- 12:29sure on that one on dogs, all.
- 12:31Speaker 4: Right, Chris, When my wife actually keep a blanket on
- 12:35the bed specifically for my dog to lay on, and
- 12:39then when she's done, we take it off, so there's
- 12:41like a blanket that absorbs all of her stink.
- 12:46Speaker 3: Also helpful bathe Bathing in a blanket wouldn't be a
- 12:48bad idea for sure.
- 12:50Speaker 5: There you go, all right, All, okay, Sorry, there's no
- 12:55magic fits.
- 12:56Speaker 2: I want to spray. Can I just I wish there
- 12:59was that.
- 13:00Speaker 8: There's a stray for every I'm just.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Gonna say he said, Puggle's pretty old.
- 13:03Speaker 5: So you know, let's see another rough phone call? Or
- 13:07do we I have a text quaest?
- 13:08Speaker 4: I got lots of phone calls. They'll take a music
- 13:10as one.
- 13:11Speaker 5: Let's just take one more. Then that's all we have time.
- 13:12Speaker 4: I got Mike on the line, Mike, Mike, we can't Yeah, Mike,
- 13:21for God's sake, Okay, what's your question?
- 13:26Speaker 10: I have a seven year old rotweiler. He's starting to
- 13:31have a really hard time getting up after he's laying down, right, like.
- 13:38Speaker 4: Arthritis.
- 13:40Speaker 3: If it's one leg I mean there's probably arthritis is
- 13:43probably the secondary problem. But if it's one legue, you
- 13:46may have a knee injury.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Or a hip issue. Those those will lead to arthritis.
- 13:50Speaker 3: But an old Roddy's gonna always have arthritis anyway. So
- 13:54I definitely get on something. So talk to your veterinarian
- 13:57about that that you do work with. But combination of
- 14:00things can really benefit them.
- 14:02Speaker 1: All right, all right, hang up on Mike your phone.
- 14:08Speaker 2: He's giving me a headache.
- 14:12Speaker 5: Let's see. I have a question for doctor Davis. Is
- 14:14it appropriate to request a second opinion?
- 14:17Speaker 2: Always? Yeah, yeah, there's nothing wrong with that.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Easy, there you go, don't be shy. So anything doctor
- 14:22Davis has told you to do today, get a second opinion.
- 14:25Speaker 3: Yes, well, and you want to find a veterinarian that
- 14:28that you trust and that that that works well with you,
- 14:30and sometimes that does take a second opinion just to
- 14:33get that relationship.
- 14:34Speaker 5: So yeah, right, well, thank you very much for coming
- 14:37down here in person.
- 14:38Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great. It's actually closer to my house, so yeah,
- 14:40I don't have a problem with that.
- 14:41Speaker 5: That's good, all right, thank you, all right, thanks you guys,
- 14:44Doctor Josh Davis.
