- 0:00[SPEAKER_02]: Five, six, seven, eight, Kenny.
- 0:02[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about Kenny or Tega.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_02]: What a man.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_02]: What a man, what a man, what a man, what a man.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about it, all right, here we go.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_02]: Hi everybody, welcome back to Gilmour to say with Tara and Haley and Tara.
- 0:19[SPEAKER_02]: This is Haley.
- 0:20[SPEAKER_02]: Hi, Haley.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_02]: Hi, Tara.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, spear finger.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: Good job, Hans.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a little jazz hand action today.
- 0:25[SPEAKER_00]: Good evening.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_02]: But Kenny, yeah, how perfect, how fitting.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 0:32[SPEAKER_02]: We are so excited to stay to dive into some Kenny Ortega episodes after last week's deep dive on Amy and Dana episodes, because there's a lot of crossover there.
- 0:39[SPEAKER_02]: But before we dive into Kenny Ortega, I want to answer the question that we kind of left on a cliff hanger at the end of last week's episode, which was putting Amy and Dana episodes from season two up against each other.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_02]: And we landed on the Bracebridge dinner versus a Tiska Tasket, a very,
- 1:00[SPEAKER_02]: Conundrum in my opinion like how did I choose how to answer to what was your answer Bracebridge right and the people said the same at first a test can attack it was an apple you did I didn't I would have Bracebridge not that my vote was like the deciding vote I know I was still so funny.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_02]: No, it was pretty pretty stark at first honestly a test get a task it was surpassing
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: And then when I checked a couple of months later, a break bridge was winning.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a couple of hours later.
- 1:35[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, a break bridge is like far beyond people's answer, which I found really fascinating.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_02]: And because I wasn't sure where it was going to go, I know that you thought.
- 1:45[SPEAKER_02]: Brace bridge was going to kind of I said the girl the people race well Brace bridge and I totally understand Oh my god, we actually I have I have to tell you about my Friend Amy and her journey that I told you by last week.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so yesterday We were at work and I said how are the girls and she was like good I just watched the episode where you know the town was like the Brace bridge and she was
- 2:09[SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to read up the cell.
- 2:11[SPEAKER_01]: We're the town.
- 2:12[SPEAKER_01]: We're the town.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_02]: And I just didn't immediately know it.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_01]: She was like, yes.
- 2:16[SPEAKER_01]: What a sweet episode.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_01]: I loved that episode.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_01]: It's cozy.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_01]: There's a sleigh.
- 2:22[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, yeah exactly.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_02]: And so we, you know, do our day workshift together.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_02]: And so she was like, I'll be watching.
- 2:29[SPEAKER_02]: She's like, watches it while she does day work.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_02]: And so she comes down stairs like towards the end of our call and she's sitting there kind of like taking a little break and I can see that she's watching a test get a task and I was like, oh, I'm so excited for her so I'm in the bathroom.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_02]: and she comes in.
- 2:48[SPEAKER_02]: She has it on and that's what I love.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_02]: It's like she's taking it with her over where she goes.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_02]: And I can see that she's so tarot.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_02]: That's a lot of time under the covers in the bathroom.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_02]: They come with me everywhere.
- 3:00[SPEAKER_02]: It's truly the portable DVD player.
- 3:01[SPEAKER_02]: The iPhone is the portable DVD player of our time.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 3:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 3:06[SPEAKER_02]: So Amy comes in and I see that she's on the scene.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_02]: We're suing Jackson or laying on the picnic picnic like it.
- 3:12[SPEAKER_02]: And she goes if these two aren't
- 3:17[SPEAKER_02]: because he, in that moment said, I think we should get married.
- 3:21[SPEAKER_02]: She stood there for like a good second and was like, oh my God.
- 3:24[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, yeah, right?
- 3:27[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_02]: I just love it so much.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_02]: I love like being on this journey with her, kind of like, you know.
- 3:33[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of wish you could have given her like a pull in the moment.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: Like this is it that.
- 3:38[SPEAKER_00]: and Amy was like the deciding fact day.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_02]: Wait, oh my god, I totally should have.
- 3:42[SPEAKER_02]: But of course, I thought that was going.
- 3:44[SPEAKER_02]: No, I didn't watch our episode like to review.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, for that.
- 3:48[SPEAKER_02]: To wrap her until after I got home for work that day yesterday.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_02]: And so damn, I should have asked her.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, man.
- 3:56[SPEAKER_02]: We'll report back, but it was just, we'll never see her again.
- 3:58[SPEAKER_02]: And we'll never, never saw her again.
- 4:01[SPEAKER_02]: Ask her next week.
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: I should well ask her to my probably sort of tomorrow.
- 4:04[SPEAKER_02]: We're Sunday But yeah, it was it was just so sweet that she was like these two better be end game And that well I've been this really really cute, but those two episodes are so so strong especially for season two
- 4:18[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, but the people have spoken and it is braced forage dinner, and I think that that kind of makes it Dan season Dan had some really strong episodes like listening to that episode and also doing that episode with you last week Made me want to like do a deep dive on Daniel Paladino because we've done a deep dive on Amy
- 4:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but we have to do a deep dive on Dan.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: I want the deep dive, the Dan deep dive to be with Dan.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: I want Amy, of course.
- 4:46[SPEAKER_00]: More than I can.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: I can.
- 4:48[SPEAKER_00]: The silent hero who's like, not silent at all.
- 4:52[SPEAKER_00]: No, not silent at all.
- 4:53[SPEAKER_00]: But let's credit it because everyone always talks about this.
- 4:56[SPEAKER_00]: This is Amy show.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_02]: Amy, but like, he is so, so crucial.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: That's another three letter name.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: It's true.
- 5:04[SPEAKER_00]: Dan.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: Dan, Dan, you're... Dan, you're...
- 5:06[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, still still But anyway, I wanted to give a report back because the people of Spokane and Rich dinner is the winner I thought right who would have thought daily of all people voting for my bridge dinner at a pole.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like
- 5:23[SPEAKER_00]: fighting for it.
- 5:24[SPEAKER_02]: But I have to tell you, I got to the part where we were talking about a tisket a tasket.
- 5:28[SPEAKER_02]: I think it was versus I can't get started.
- 5:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I went on and on and on and on and about tisket a tasket.
- 5:33[SPEAKER_02]: Because I was like, I'm sorry, this happens, this happens, this happens, this happens.
- 5:37[SPEAKER_02]: That's like, where are you?
- 5:39[SPEAKER_02]: I feel very passionate.
- 5:40[SPEAKER_02]: Even though I love language, I love Martin Brown.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it was like, whoa, that's what I don't love one of us.
- 5:46[SPEAKER_02]: What there?
- 5:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but it was, it was really, by the end of listening to the episode, I still didn't know where I stand.
- 5:54[SPEAKER_02]: And to be honest with you, as I sit here with you all today, I have no idea where I stand, I love them both.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: It's like sit as I sit.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: As I sit.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: I can't even stand yeah um no like it's whatever you can pick both that's the joy and the beautiful journey of our podcast exactly we do no matter all that much that's really that's the scariest here there's no rules you can you know
- 6:19[SPEAKER_00]: We make the rules and there are no rules, you can choose both.
- 6:22[SPEAKER_02]: We make the rules anyway.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_02]: I actually speaking of this is our place we make the rules.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_02]: Do you want to give the girl a little insight how you feel about Taylor Swift's new album because we have not recorded an episode since last week since he listened?
- 6:34[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my gosh, I love it.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: I think it's so fun, it's such a fun time.
- 6:40[SPEAKER_00]: I have not seen my problem as I listened at midnight, of course, naturally, famously have low frequency hearing loss, missed a lot of it.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: When I first listened, saw the lyric videos at the movie theater later that night, blew my mind, those songs changed completely, found out what they were about.
- 6:57[SPEAKER_00]: And then, since then,
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: Specifically would.
- 7:00[SPEAKER_00]: No, but like specifically Elizabeth Taylor.
- 7:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I thought she was spelling words in that song.
- 7:05[SPEAKER_00]: No, she was saying words and not she didn't spell anything even one time I'll try to figure out you I have a reaction video on YouTube if you want to watch me literally So confused at what is even happening?
- 7:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, um, but to that effect, I've really only listened to the fate of a failure and it'll be a tailor.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't moved past it.
- 7:27[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but podfave is what?
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God, are fit.
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: It's like what about what?
- 7:33[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 7:34[SPEAKER_00]: A fun time.
- 7:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's nothing but there's nothing but bops about it.
- 7:39[SPEAKER_00]: Literally.
- 7:40[SPEAKER_00]: Did you see, do you follow new heights?
- 7:43[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, Jason, can I love that fabric in there?
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, you know what, speaking of new heights of manhood.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: Jason asked Travis specifically about that song, how he felt about it.
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: And he was like, I love any time she engines me love her.
- 7:58[SPEAKER_00]: And he was like, no, but that one specifically, yeah, um, because he said if anyone wrote a song in the style of wood about him, it would be more about less redwood tree and more like ornamental bush.
- 8:13[SPEAKER_00]: What's going on?
- 8:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's on my phone.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: He said it hard to see.
- 8:16[SPEAKER_00]: He said, it takes some time before you can see it.
- 8:21[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, Jason, oh my God.
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's not a safer work.
- 8:25[SPEAKER_00]: This is not teamwork.
- 8:27[SPEAKER_00]: New heights of manhood.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: Damn.
- 8:29[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, I was like crazy.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's, this is really what we need.
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: We need your brother roasting you.
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, all the internet.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I love.
- 8:36[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah.
- 8:37[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm having a good time.
- 8:38[SPEAKER_00]: I've got so much fun.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it's in it's one of those albums that everyone has an opinion about and Hates and that's been all of her albums that she's ever released so in about two months when you guys are Viving it hard Yeah, like no one like reputation when it came out and now everyone's like oh my god, you're so we die without Reputation I didn't like reputation when it first came out
- 9:00[SPEAKER_02]: But then I think that there are a lot of bops on that album.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't have an appreciation for it.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's really what it is.
- 9:05[SPEAKER_02]: So maybe there will be like a residual appreciation for this album.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I like it.
- 9:09[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's fun not every single album or song that this woman produces is going to be like your faith and that's okay.
- 9:20[SPEAKER_00]: You're number one.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's okay.
- 9:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's totally fine.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: She's really songs that are not my number one.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: Not even my number two.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_02]: She's really still albums that I'm not like a huge fan of.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know?
- 9:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was great.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: I thought we were having fun every weekend.
- 9:35[SPEAKER_00]: But we will probably be from my birthday.
- 9:38[SPEAKER_00]: My birthday episode will do a little later.
- 9:40[SPEAKER_01]: We'll do a deeper dive.
- 9:42[SPEAKER_02]: I just wanted to have you share with the people some of your initial guests who haven't seen your video, who may not follow you on Instagram.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: On the on the gram.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 9:50[SPEAKER_00]: Love it.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: Marked safe from being a haters.
- 9:53[SPEAKER_00]: That was so funny.
- 9:55[SPEAKER_00]: I love it, but on our Instagram, I posted the life of a show girl being Kelly Bischoff, which like a lot of people really loved that.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like when you think of it, because like in that song, it's as her name was Kitty.
- 10:08[SPEAKER_00]: She made her money being pretty and witty, and I was like, that's
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: So Kelly Bishop from like radio city dirty dancing like her ballet days like just looking at her life through the lens of the third go more girl She is the life of a show girl.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_02]: She truly is like you want to see the life of a show girl or hear about it
- 10:27[SPEAKER_02]: or read about it, read a book, read the book, read the book.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_02]: I have something to actually tell you off-pod.
- 10:34[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, after this is over, secrets, a secret.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_02]: No, it's not a secret.
- 10:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like some exciting, an exciting new development that I'm very excited to tell you about off-pod.
- 10:44[SPEAKER_02]: That pertains to that, but speaking of dirty dancing,
- 10:49[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about Kenny or take off.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I was like, wait, where are we?
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: We were.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_02]: Do you know what?
- 10:54[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like, I'm like,
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: I meant to that because so I actually tried to go back and listen to this because when you were here at my house We watched the DVD commentary for you jump item jack, which he directed and there is Amy and Dan commentary on it And when Kenny's name pops up they're like, oh, our friend Kenneth Ortega, and I remembered that So I wanted to go back and listen to it, but famously I have an issue with my DVD box at famous
- 11:34[SPEAKER_00]: Which the disk to is stuck in the blue ray player and it won't give it back.
- 11:39[SPEAKER_00]: It won't turn on and it won't play it So wired the disk to in the box set right now is the movie the feature film Titanic Which is quite funny of a reference because on this two is you jump by jump jack so like After the fourth episode which is typical new and Taylor two and season five you then have to watch Titanic
- 11:59[SPEAKER_00]: and then switch to episode nine.
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: Famous out of the way.
- 12:05[SPEAKER_00]: That's a different way of watching season five.
- 12:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I couldn't go back and watch the DVD commentary to have to hear more about what they had to say on Kenneth Ortega.
- 12:12[SPEAKER_00]: And I really wanted to because no matter how many different ways I searched Kenny Ortega, Amy Shremepelli, no Dan Pelelli, no Gilmore Girls, it was so hard to find anything.
- 12:23[SPEAKER_00]: of either of them commenting on the other person's work, on their time on the show, that person, either of them working on the show, and I was like, oh dang, we're just gonna have to have Amy and Dan and Kenny on to reveal their history here together, which we want to do.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: Fingers crossed, everyone's in out good vibes into the universe that we can get all three of those people.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe not together, though that would be fine.
- 12:47[SPEAKER_02]: I never love about that, but in touch with Kenny's people.
- 12:50[SPEAKER_02]: people.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: It's in the, it's hopefully in the works.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: Hopefully we'll have it.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: We were hoping.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_02]: We were hoping for this week.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_02]: But it didn't work out.
- 12:58[SPEAKER_00]: But it's fine.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_02]: I'd rather work deep dive first and then because there are so many questions I have after doing this deep dive that I can only ask him.
- 13:06[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that was kind of like us with um, grant me Philips after words.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_00]: We were like, we don't want to like inundate him with like this.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: With an episode that we can do.
- 13:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, with like the deep dive analysis totally.
- 13:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: So we're doing the Kenny deep dive before the Kenny conversation that we're manifesting because it's in the works, but has not been confirmed.
- 13:27[SPEAKER_00]: So it works.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 13:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's in the works.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 13:29[SPEAKER_00]: I did a little shimmy that.
- 13:31[SPEAKER_02]: It was for candy.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: It was for candy.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_02]: It's like a break dance.
- 13:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that was my kineshi.
- 13:37[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, Kenny.
- 13:39[SPEAKER_00]: His name was Kenny.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, exactly.
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway, I, but I did a little book report a little Kenny or take a book report.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_00]: I had such a fun time hearing him talk and just about his work and just doing sort of a deep dive.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: I loved finding out he's from California, his grandparents, or Spanish immigrants.
- 14:02[SPEAKER_00]: And when he was in high school he was a cheerleader and in the drama department.
- 14:06[SPEAKER_00]: I was like,
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: That is so bright.
- 14:08[SPEAKER_00]: That's so bright.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's so bright.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: That's so bright for the old.
- 14:10[SPEAKER_00]: That's so high school.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: It just like, it just means so much.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's so us.
- 14:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, this just feels so chaotic.
- 14:18[SPEAKER_00]: Me as a collective, all of us, you can more take a look.
- 14:21[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, which feels so Gilmore girls as well to be like theater kid.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_02]: Maybe you were cheerleader, I don't know, Lane Kim was for one episode.
- 14:29[SPEAKER_00]: You could like, you know, one episode, exactly.
- 14:34[SPEAKER_00]: But he was like an actor dancer, but I don't know if it didn't work out.
- 14:39[SPEAKER_00]: It didn't really say in any of the articles that I read about him.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: Why he swayed?
- 14:42[SPEAKER_02]: Be someone I deduced, he was offered some performing opportunities, but really gravitated towards.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_02]: Korea, which you really like being engaged, betrothed, if you will, to a dancer.
- 14:53[SPEAKER_02]: Like, there is a very vast difference between like being a dancer and being a choreographer.
- 14:57[SPEAKER_02]: And if you have that knack, if you have the ability to envision, I mean, it is very, it does fall in line with the director trajectory, because you do have to be able to picture things in your mind, picture a very clear
- 15:08[SPEAKER_02]: a choreographed picture in your mind a full step by step process that takes a very specific lens literally at very to be able to have very clear eye very clear like your mind's eye has to be very clear absolutely to be able to see all of these things.
- 15:26[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not just being a good dancer in the slightest.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: But his first choreography credit for a major motion picture with Xanado, with Olivia Newton John's.
- 15:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's just so cool and Gene Kelly, imagine me mentored by Gene Kelly.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_00]: I just like the thought of like choreographing for them and they become your mentors during that because he said that Olivia Newton John was around his age when he was doing it so she like they both really took him under their wing and I was like that's so cute.
- 15:55[SPEAKER_02]: There's a really beautiful photo of them like rehearsing something.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we'll have to post that on our Instagram because honestly, we should do a little Kenny Retro Spasher the life of a showgirl for real My god, truly talk about the life of a showgirl.
- 16:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, wow, and what a perfect time to talk about that.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: What a perfect time
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: he really is life of a showgirl.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: But he's done a lot of things.
- 16:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's directed, he's choreographed, he's done music videos, he's done feature films, he's done TV films, and one like very notable ones, of course, they had to do was the first he did Ferris Bueller stay off.
- 16:30[SPEAKER_00]: I was so shocked by that.
- 16:31[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, what?
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty amazing like you sent almost fire see it.
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 16:35[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but like so he and he and John he's had a really strong relationship.
- 16:38[SPEAKER_00]: Clearly and so it was I think I was I can't remember what outlet was.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was ET.
- 16:43[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was entertainment tonight.
- 16:44[SPEAKER_00]: We're doing like a retrospect with him on all of his films and he was seeing them and he was toast.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: He just was talking about how cool it was and like how nervous oh my gosh what is his name?
- 16:54[SPEAKER_00]: Who plays fair?
- 16:55[SPEAKER_02]: It's Bueller.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: Matthew Braderick, see, I knew it.
- 16:58[SPEAKER_02]: Also at the theater, like a Broadway baby.
- 16:59[SPEAKER_00]: But he said he was so nervous that like he hadn't really ever danced like this before and he was like, I got you and he said, nice, this man alive.
- 17:07[SPEAKER_00]: And I just like watching Kenny rewatch this.
- 17:10[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, this man is like, honestly, seems like kind of sweet as man alive because every every instance of him like remembering these things, he's like one of the greatest memories of my life.
- 17:19[SPEAKER_00]: And I just love like I love the idea of someone having like so many greatest memories of their life and that's what I'm talking about.
- 17:25[SPEAKER_02]: And so many accolades to a company of those things and he's still like so grateful humble.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, happy.
- 17:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I love that.
- 17:32[SPEAKER_00]: And I think good.
- 17:33[SPEAKER_00]: So many of us associate him with.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I say so many of us because like I imagine a lot of us being the same age because it really is dependent on your age what you remember Kenny or Teva for because it's like Kenny or Teva did.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: He transitioned to Disney in the 90s after doing.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_00]: dirty dancing.
- 17:56[SPEAKER_00]: And he said that he was friends with Patrick's Waysie through his whole life and him and Jennifer.
- 18:01[SPEAKER_00]: Guy, you're still friends and that like he really tried to choreograph to Patrick's capabilities because he had a really bad knee.
- 18:09[SPEAKER_00]: Me and Patrick are on the same.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: We've linked there.
- 18:11[SPEAKER_00]: I also have a venue.
- 18:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, but she said that like she said he said that like at the end when he's like on his knees like swinging around he was like an agony Oh, his knee hurts so bad and came up to him and he was like just one more if everyone isn't in their place I only have one more to give and so he was like if like a true professional because Because of that, but he talked about how like dirty dancing really was like the Language of the movie was dance
- 18:37[SPEAKER_00]: and so thinking about that and reflecting back on Kelly Bishop's memoir and how she was suddenly placed into this role that was like she had a small role and then most suddenly her mom to imagine that she like just kind of suddenly ended up there isn't saying because of like her history of dance yeah it just feels like she would be there yeah and he didn't mention her in it because like I don't this was and they never mentioned Gilmore roles in this interview which I was really surprised by but when you listen to her music place
- 19:07[SPEAKER_00]: Um, you know, I don't have a date for it, but it was definitely recent.
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: It was like within the last couple of years.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, wow.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: Definitely a recent one.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: Uh-huh.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: Um, yeah, because they talked about that.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: Because then they were talking about his movies, but then they also talked a lot about his music videos because he did material girl by Madonna.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, he did.
- 19:26[SPEAKER_00]: And like other artists, he did he did share Selena, Elton John, Diana Ross, Gloria Estefan, Gladys Knight.
- 19:32[SPEAKER_00]: and a lot of people confuse him for his work with Michael Jackson because he didn't actually direct a choreograph any of his individual music videos, but he was the director and the creative director for his voice tours.
- 19:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, starting with the Dangerous Tour in the early 90s, which is wild.
- 19:46[SPEAKER_00]: Which is crazy.
- 19:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 19:48[SPEAKER_00]: And as he was talking about Madonna, because material girl was like right before she made it, like it's because Madonna is now, that Madonna reminded him of Michael because of her commitment to the work.
- 20:04[SPEAKER_00]: That like, she was the first one there.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: She was the last one to leave.
- 20:07[SPEAKER_00]: She wanted to do it until it was perfect.
- 20:09[SPEAKER_00]: And she was like committing to getting it right.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: And when he was talking about Madonna and Michael Jackson immediately, I thought of Amy Sherman Paladino.
- 20:17[SPEAKER_00]: Which is like, maybe the weirdest sentence I've ever said in the past.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: But I was like, that makes so much sense why he would like appreciate working with the Paladino.
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because they're like, doing until they get it done, right?
- 20:29[SPEAKER_00]: Until they want, until it's exactly how they want it.
- 20:31[SPEAKER_02]: I could understand why they've been going to gravitate towards him is his work ethic, you know, working with someone like Patrick Spazey on dirty dancing.
- 20:38[SPEAKER_02]: And then doing it until it's right, even though Patrick had like,
- 20:41[SPEAKER_02]: One left in him with this with the knee action.
- 20:43[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, okay, let's do it.
- 20:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but it's got to be done right.
- 20:46[SPEAKER_00]: It's got to be done right and he seems like someone who's so game who's like so committed to the artists vision in his own vision and that like it's like this is what you see we're going to do it until it's right so when he's talking about Donna was like, oh, Amy.
- 21:03[SPEAKER_00]: I used to play Wild to compare Amy Sherman Paladino to Madonna or Michael Jackson, but it was just the work ethic that it reminded me of, which not to bring Taylor Swift into this at all, but it did remind me of the behind-the-scenes of her music video, or she was like, that was perfect, but I have more to give, I'm gonna do this one more time.
- 21:19[SPEAKER_00]: And it just seemed like that the people who are like notable in that way really are just so committed to not it being perfect, but you having given everything that you could to that perfect moment and if you know that you have more to give.
- 21:34[SPEAKER_00]: it's you're just going to keep doing it until almost until you're depleted and you feel like you have done everything you could.
- 21:40[SPEAKER_00]: So I feel like that really aligns for all of those people.
- 21:44[SPEAKER_00]: But I just like it, I feel like it really affected on Kenny in all of those moments.
- 21:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 100%.
- 21:49[SPEAKER_00]: But then he moved on to Disney and he did some of it.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_02]: But before he did that, his first television directorial debut was the series of dirty dancing.
- 21:57[SPEAKER_02]: For the dirty dancing, yeah, which I did not know that existed and you know who plays baby.
- 22:02[SPEAKER_02]: Mallorne Hardin, Jan from the office.
- 22:05[SPEAKER_02]: Lini for those in the know.
- 22:07[SPEAKER_00]: She is more Kevin Bacon than anyone else.
- 22:11[SPEAKER_00]: She is in everything.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_00]: Six degrees of Mallorne Hardin.
- 22:14[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm not sure.
- 22:16[SPEAKER_02]: Somebody in my, that is the female version of six years ago.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: That is the new standard.
- 22:20[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: I love her.
- 22:23[SPEAKER_00]: I love knowing that.
- 22:24[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, now I want to watch it.
- 22:25[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, it's on YouTube.
- 22:26[SPEAKER_02]: I found it.
- 22:27[SPEAKER_02]: I watched a little bit of it this morning.
- 22:28[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, how was it?
- 22:29[SPEAKER_00]: How was it?
- 22:30[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, she was, I mean, like, I skimmed, because obviously there was a lot to kind of take in here and check it out.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just gonna sit and watch this whole series for this episode.
- 22:38[SPEAKER_02]: Not for this episode, but I will sit down and watch that whole series.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_00]: I want to.
- 22:41[SPEAKER_02]: It's basically my recommendation of what happened after the dirty dancing film.
- 22:45[SPEAKER_02]: They basically take the...
- 22:49[SPEAKER_02]: they condense the storyline of the dirty dancing film into the first episode at least what I gathered from skimming it and they like kind of established the relationship between a Francis baby and Patrick Suise's character and Johnny, thank you.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_02]: I was like, what's this?
- 23:08[SPEAKER_02]: What's this thing?
- 23:11[SPEAKER_02]: then there's just they kind of expand on it.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_02]: And so, I didn't notice anybody from the original movie in there, but time of my life has changed.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_02]: Oh gosh, his name, I think was also Patrick, but not Patrick Suisey.
- 23:28[SPEAKER_02]: And did you ever see Teen Witch?
- 23:31[SPEAKER_02]: the movie team list.
- 23:32[SPEAKER_02]: So do you remember the top that girl, her friend?
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: Mm-hmm.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_02]: Okay, her friend was played by this actress named Mandy Inber and she's also in it.
- 23:42[SPEAKER_02]: And so I was like, yes, I love that.
- 23:44[SPEAKER_02]: If anybody is a teen witch fan out there, you remember the top that?
- 23:47[SPEAKER_00]: That's how I don't remember it.
- 23:49[SPEAKER_00]: That's how I don't know who this man is.
- 23:51[SPEAKER_00]: He's in some things I've seen, but I don't like recognize him.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 23:54[SPEAKER_02]: It felt like, he felt recognizable to me.
- 23:57[SPEAKER_02]: I, you know.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_02]: It wasn't like I always read this, but yeah, but yeah, he looked recognizable to me.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway.
- 24:04[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:05[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: I think it was really hard.
- 24:07[SPEAKER_00]: And that was what mattered.
- 24:08[SPEAKER_02]: Of course.
- 24:09[SPEAKER_02]: And I thought that crossover was really cool.
- 24:11[SPEAKER_02]: I also really love that like, you know, there's obviously a lot of choreography in that it's an expansion and the expansion.
- 24:18[SPEAKER_02]: Sookie.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: It's an extension on our Patreon said anytime you say expansion and you don't actually acknowledge the reference.
- 24:26[SPEAKER_00]: They get really sad.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I'm, I aim to please.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_02]: So there you go.
- 24:31[SPEAKER_00]: That's all you could do.
- 24:32[SPEAKER_02]: It's, it is an extension of the dirty dancing film, which of course was super iconic.
- 24:37[SPEAKER_02]: But there's also a lot of choreography in there.
- 24:39[SPEAKER_02]: There were some scenes that remind me of the dance marathon in that, like, you're kind of zoomed out to all of the couples dancing and then use zero in on one couple.
- 24:48[SPEAKER_02]: And so I'm excited to kind of talk about that a little later.
- 24:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but before we, before we have to have Malaur
- 24:54[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, I want to talk to her.
- 24:55[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like her.
- 24:56[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like her.
- 24:57[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like her.
- 24:58[SPEAKER_02]: We should definitely talk to her.
- 25:00[SPEAKER_02]: Me, like, you don't understand how integral you are.
- 25:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, iconic.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_00]: How iconic.
- 25:04[SPEAKER_02]: How iconic you are to this podcast.
- 25:06[SPEAKER_02]: I digress.
- 25:07[SPEAKER_02]: So after Judy dancing, he moves into Disney.
- 25:10[SPEAKER_00]: Disney.
- 25:11[SPEAKER_00]: And he does some of the most iconic.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, my God.
- 25:15[SPEAKER_00]: He did newsy.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: Newsy.
- 25:16[SPEAKER_00]: The Christian male.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_02]: Which did you release like flopped?
- 25:21[SPEAKER_02]: No, when it first came out, no.
- 25:23[SPEAKER_02]: It has like a very low percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
- 25:25[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, this is, this movie is cult classic.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 25:30[SPEAKER_00]: Focus, focus.
- 25:31[SPEAKER_00]: Also, speaking of things that didn't do well when it came out, come on, Rose, didn't have much of an audience.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's not.
- 25:37[SPEAKER_00]: It's way more popular.
- 25:38[SPEAKER_00]: Now, it didn't flop.
- 25:39[SPEAKER_00]: I was going to say.
- 25:40[SPEAKER_00]: It was not flop.
- 25:41[SPEAKER_00]: It was not award-winning in any way.
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: It wasn't, didn't have huge numbers in terms of ratings, like, it took, it going on streaming.
- 25:50[SPEAKER_02]: At the same time.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 25:51[SPEAKER_00]: It took some time.
- 25:52[SPEAKER_00]: But 25 years later, it's way more popular than it ever was.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, 100%.
- 25:56[SPEAKER_02]: On air.
- 25:59[SPEAKER_02]: Ah, iconic.
- 26:01[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and it wasn't an adult that I realized he directed that.
- 26:04[SPEAKER_00]: I know, but did you know that he didn't direct Hocus Pocus 2?
- 26:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I did.
- 26:09[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't know that until he said, well, I didn't direct Hocus Pocus 2 was really sad that they didn't bring me back.
- 26:14[SPEAKER_00]: But if they wanted to do Hocus Pocus 3, I'd come back.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 26:17[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, Kenny, how did they not ask you back?
- 26:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm surprised by that, is he?
- 26:23[SPEAKER_00]: You have quite a bit going on.
- 26:24[SPEAKER_02]: He's not going on, but still.
- 26:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but he also, of course, of course, of course did high school musical, did the high school musical trilogy.
- 26:32[SPEAKER_02]: I feel like my name millennials, Gen Z, that is maybe how you got introduced.
- 26:37[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just going to speak for myself.
- 26:38[SPEAKER_02]: That's how I was really introduced to Kenny Kenny or take a was.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_02]: Again, I'd seen Hocus Pocus prior to that.
- 26:44[SPEAKER_02]: I'd seen Jordan dancing prior to that, but I didn't know who was until high school musical.
- 26:49[SPEAKER_02]: High school musical had a chokehold on me.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: Do not even talk to me about seventh grade in Zach Efron.
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: It like ruined my life It was like that was the worst thing ever happened to me.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: It was the best.
- 27:00[SPEAKER_02]: I was obsessed with Zach Efron So obsessed that was like that was truly the age of Zach Efron because that was really the advent of my obsessive personality To the degree that it was so true that and Gilmore girls kind of walked hand in hand I started watching Gilmore girls and like I
- 27:16[SPEAKER_02]: 2000 shortly before that.
- 27:17[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
- 27:18[SPEAKER_02]: So like for 2006 to have high school musical emerge and then high school musical too, hairspray, high school musical three.
- 27:26[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god.
- 27:27[SPEAKER_02]: I listened to sounds hard.
- 27:29[SPEAKER_02]: I had nausea.
- 27:31[SPEAKER_02]: And that came out my senior year.
- 27:32[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, I was like, oh.
- 27:36[SPEAKER_00]: I think part of the reason why I associate him so heavily with that movie is because the like Disney promo like he there was a lot of like behind the scenes.
- 27:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah.
- 27:47[SPEAKER_00]: Disney did and put in like commercial breaks and or it was like the behind the scene special where Kenny was talking and so I like very closely associated him with that because it took my first real introduction to him and like having him talk about it in the way that he did.
- 28:02[SPEAKER_00]: hearing him talk about high school musical in this like retrospect, they did, he loved it so much, he told them to sit at the Disney marketing department, does what they need to do, all of your lights are about to change, because he felt it in the room what this was, and apparently Zac Efron was going to like quit auditioning after this, like this was his last audition because him and his mom couldn't keep.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: up with like the drive that it took to do all of this, like an hour into ours out and so this was like his big Zack's big thing.
- 28:31[SPEAKER_00]: This is like, well, they're big for a lot of Kenny, but I don't know, he for in it.
- 28:36[SPEAKER_02]: Zack and I think that's Vanessa, who was Vanessa and Huggins when she first started.
- 28:42[SPEAKER_02]: It is.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_02]: a little, the little Miss Anne, Ashley Tisdale.
- 28:47[SPEAKER_02]: It just all of them, Corbin Blue.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_02]: Corbin Blue, I just, Corbin Blue, I think about the fact that Lake.
- 28:54[SPEAKER_02]: their careers just absolutely explode at.
- 28:57[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, so I'm proud of the Disney marketing team for doing it.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: I know.
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: I'm quite proud.
- 29:02[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that the Disney marketing team marketed Kenny Ortega to me too.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: And so like in all of those, but also millennials, he did cheetah girls.
- 29:12[SPEAKER_00]: Cheetah girls too, too.
- 29:13[SPEAKER_00]: Cheetah girls too, but like still, just as good as the first.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: So please love the cheetah.
- 29:19[SPEAKER_00]: And they're in Barcelona.
- 29:21[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
- 29:22[SPEAKER_02]: Oh my god, I forgot I haven't seen that in so long.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but if you're a little bit young, if you're a little bit younger than us, then you probably were in on the descendants, yeah, which is like, I feel like just like a few years younger than us, it's like they are high school musical because like there's like five of those, um, it's like dove Cameron and that one really exploded, um, and I, that's how I know that this was like a recent interview because it was like the tenth anniversary of descendants that they were doing this for.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: so I know that it was like recent, but he also moved from there and went to Netflix and did Julie in the phantoms.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: And in the article that I read from 2024, what he was working on was a reimagining of phantom of the opera for the last.
- 30:05[SPEAKER_00]: So cool.
- 30:06[SPEAKER_00]: I know that he's been in like England or something recently, so I didn't know if that's what he was working on.
- 30:11[SPEAKER_00]: So that's that's kind of everything that he has done a bridge the bridge the bridge version of the or take a the book report of Kenny or take a the we submitted to our teacher.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you Yeah, but he's done so much.
- 30:31[SPEAKER_02]: He's so accomplished and like especially the you know
- 30:35[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, everything he's done, but I also just couldn't believe how close he was to Michael Jackson and I know of the tours that he did from the early 90s on like literally up and down Michael's unexpected passing with that this is it tour, which then ended up becoming a film because of everything that
- 30:51[SPEAKER_00]: Which can he did?
- 30:52[SPEAKER_00]: Can he wrote directed and produced this is that this is us not this is us no different It's very different this is it.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: This is us is actually the one direction documentary.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:03[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah different different yeah But he's just a very accomplished human being.
- 31:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's so wonderful to hear that he's just like an all around nice guy Anybody who's worked with him has also said the same thing about him just sings his braces as he's great so
- 31:18[SPEAKER_00]: But he also directed a lot of TV in this.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: He directed Allie McBeele on top of Gilmore girls.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_00]: He did some bun heads as well, which makes sense because he danced show.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_02]: I was I did wonder if they were going to bring him in for a 12, but I also wondered if they were going to bring him in for Macewell and I didn't see him listed there for Macewell, but I'm you know, I
- 31:41[SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure he had other things.
- 31:42[SPEAKER_02]: I think that was really right in the thick of him doing descendants who's descendants.
- 31:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but I saw on like an Instagram post of his from many moons ago that he was very supportive of them as they got all their accolades from nasal and, you know, he's they're clearly still big fans of each other.
- 31:59[SPEAKER_02]: But yes, amidst directing a lot,
- 32:03[SPEAKER_02]: of like individual television episodes.
- 32:05[SPEAKER_02]: It was like one here, one there, two here, two there.
- 32:07[SPEAKER_02]: The most amount of television episodes that he directed for a series was for Gilmore Girls.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_02]: And it was 12 episodes from 2002 to 2006, which I think is so special.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_02]: I love that they were able to develop a relationship, especially because Amy and Dan are so specific, so particular.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_02]: and they like to make sure everything is done to the best of its ability that they brought in someone like Kenny and really that started with season three episode seven, the 50th episode they shoot Gilmore's Don't Die, which no surprise at all that he was the director for that because it is so
- 32:38[SPEAKER_02]: The choreography of that episode, it is about the dance.
- 32:43[SPEAKER_02]: It is essential because it's a dance marathon episode.
- 32:46[SPEAKER_02]: The actual movement of the episode, the flow of the episode is also really crucial too.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_02]: And Kenny had the right eye for that.
- 32:51[SPEAKER_02]: I'm so glad that, you know, I'm speculating here.
- 32:54[SPEAKER_02]: But if they took a chance on collaborating together for this being their first work together, that it then led to this relationship where he directed, I'm gonna say 11 episodes with them because the 12 episode was season seven.
- 33:08[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like for the most part, when you see Kenny's name pop up in the credits and like the opening credits as They're as the dialogue is rolling through you see directed by Kenny or Tega, Kenneth or Tega, Kenneth or Tega.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, oh, this is about to be a Bob This is going to be a good episode.
- 33:24[SPEAKER_00]: You're anticipating it just being really good for the most part.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_02]: I was so surprised at some of the episodes that he directed because I was like, huh?
- 33:33[SPEAKER_00]: Because sometimes I feel like they bring him in because they're wanting to move through the episode differently They like they have something that is happening like with dance marathon or a big event or they're wanting the camera to be a very specific way that He has a really good eye for but there's some of them that you're like you check in and you're like, oh, this is
- 33:53[SPEAKER_00]: Can you or take up?
- 33:54[SPEAKER_00]: Can you or take a directed television today?
- 33:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 33:57[SPEAKER_00]: He got up today and he distracted television just like everyone else does.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but it's it's still I think that there's it's few and far between that the episode kind of like, uh, falls a little flat.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you're just you're you're intrigued by the, um, decision making process on who directs an episode.
- 34:17[SPEAKER_02]: And
- 34:17[SPEAKER_02]: I have a lot to say as we move through it because obviously, as I said before, the choreography of an episode goes beyond just dance or you just un-dancing.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_02]: And that's the blocking.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's the blocking.
- 34:28[SPEAKER_02]: And that's why Amy and Dan are, you can tell often times, not just within the writing of an episode, but in the direction of an episode, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what, what,
- 34:40[SPEAKER_02]: is an Amy episode what's the data so especially with Amy I do feel like she likes a lot of those singular shots those shots that just move through the entire sequence and it's not until you're like a few minutes in that you're like oh my god we haven't cut yet if you're like really watching it with that discerning eye and I think that having a partner like Kenny at the home is the director of an episode like that is
- 35:02[SPEAKER_02]: is important because I have a feeling that that's a very specific style that you know I don't necessarily have my finger on the pulse of what modern television is doing right now per say but I do think it's a very specific style that not a lot of people.
- 35:18[SPEAKER_02]: lean into as hard as the Paladino's did with Gomorrah.
- 35:20[SPEAKER_00]: A lean into really hard.
- 35:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I feel like having, yeah, like having someone behind the camera who can maneuverably really adapt to your vision, really easily and like see what you're going for.
- 35:31[SPEAKER_00]: But the thing that I find so interesting, like fun fact about Kenny's first episode, which is to you said, is that you Gomorrah's don't they?
- 35:40[SPEAKER_00]: that aired on November 12th, 2002.
- 35:43[SPEAKER_00]: What Kenny was also doing in 2002 was choreographing the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, which was a prime time before.
- 35:55[SPEAKER_00]: That's like what his 2002 was.
- 35:57[SPEAKER_00]: He was like, yeah, I choreographed the opening ceremony at the Olympics.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_00]: I did this episode of Gilmore girls like his career is just kind of wild The things that he goes back and forth between.
- 36:07[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
- 36:08[SPEAKER_00]: Good for him.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: Good for him.
- 36:09[SPEAKER_00]: Good for him.
- 36:10[SPEAKER_02]: That's so crazy.
- 36:12[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I feel like a
- 36:14[SPEAKER_00]: No episode more so than they shoot Gilmour's really make sense because so much of that episode is the dance marathon Yeah, but so much of it is like allowing the characters who need to shine to shine Well everyone else in the background is moving on
- 36:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's moving around them, making sure that they're hitting where they need to be the run around the run around like you needed a true choreographer as a director to do something like that and still always pull focus to the main character.
- 36:45[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, absolutely.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_02]: And I try to find ways to kind of make that style applicable to the following episode, which was a deep fried Korean Thanksgiving, and that was a Dan and Kenny combo, which best.
- 37:00[SPEAKER_02]: They are the best duo.
- 37:01[SPEAKER_02]: They're a really good duo.
- 37:02[SPEAKER_00]: Love Amy and Dan, but Dan and Kenny,
- 37:05[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 37:07[SPEAKER_02]: And I think Amy and Kenny work really well together, but it's just definitely I think Dan and Kenny actually worked together a little bit more than Amy have five first Yeah, credits.
- 37:18[SPEAKER_00]: So Amy did three.
- 37:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it was Amy and Dan.
- 37:21[SPEAKER_00]: What not Amy and Dan.
- 37:22[SPEAKER_00]: Hello
- 37:22[SPEAKER_00]: Amy and Kenny had three episodes together.
- 37:25[SPEAKER_00]: Dan and Kenny had five and I put four by other because it was a bunch of us.
- 37:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, but the episode after they shoot Gilmore's own day is just two away.
- 37:36[SPEAKER_02]: It's a deep fried Korean Thanksgiving in season three, which of course is a good one we call.
- 37:40[SPEAKER_02]: One week off and then I said, come back, come back, buddy.
- 37:43[SPEAKER_02]: in a deep-fried cream Thanksgiving, I was trying to kind of find the dance of and the blocking that could have that Kenny Ortega lens on it, and I don't know that necessarily found any thing specific, but what I felt kind of mirrored dance marathon in taking the dancing out of it is exactly what you said, allowing everybody to have their moment because series.
- 38:04[SPEAKER_02]: So much happening in this episode, they have four Thanksgivings, and so many different characters.
- 38:08[SPEAKER_02]: But I was going to say, nobody is in the same location with the exception to the Gilmore girls at the same time.
- 38:13[SPEAKER_02]: So they're building four different worlds, essentially between the Kims, Sugi's house, Luke Steiner, and the Gilmors, and the girlys are traveling through all four of them in the same
- 38:24[SPEAKER_02]: episode.
- 38:25[SPEAKER_02]: And yeah, that does take a very specific level of choreography.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_02]: And the only dance that I could really speak to is the dance that Dean tries to dance with Jess at the end of this house.
- 38:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's good to see that.
- 38:38[SPEAKER_00]: Dean and Jess in the alley together, like he was like, this is getting a little too westside story for me.
- 38:43[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, okay.
- 38:44[SPEAKER_00]: He's directed by Kenny or Dave.
- 38:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're snapping like I did like a like a put Taylor's of songs on on Saturdays on Instagram and put Taylor's of songs over good more girl scenes.
- 38:56[SPEAKER_00]: Not always.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_00]: Some other kinds of music too.
- 38:59[SPEAKER_00]: But I did that one this weekend because it's just like it feels like it feels like you want to dance.
- 39:04[SPEAKER_00]: Like if you think they're gonna have a dance off something face off.
- 39:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's true.
- 39:09[SPEAKER_02]: Well, I love that scene.
- 39:10[SPEAKER_02]: Speaking of face off, that is the next episode that Kenny or Taker directed season three episode 15 and this is the episode where they have the hockey game.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_00]: And the hockey game tricks is there.
- 39:23[SPEAKER_00]: She sees her kissing the man in the tracks.
- 39:25[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah See this is the good thing about being done with Gilmoury visited is now I feel like I'm like off-leash Yeah, I can like just rewatch episodes really nearly so I did be watch a lot of these episodes This one was also written by John Stevens the title of the category by George Stevens of Conter Interrupted
- 39:43[SPEAKER_02]: fake love on on Stevens.
- 39:46[SPEAKER_00]: And by that, we mean he was featured in concert interrupted.
- 39:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's the guy next to the world.
- 39:50[SPEAKER_02]: So we're lying to people when they're cackling and giggling.
- 39:52[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's like, you know, I really don't think this.
- 39:55[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 39:57[SPEAKER_00]: He wrote, he's written several episodes, but this one included.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I try to like find that like, uh, I guess sort of choreography feeling to it.
- 40:07[SPEAKER_02]: I was like the hockey game, the hockey game, the ice skating, the, you know, there is a dance there in some ways.
- 40:14[SPEAKER_02]: There is a lot of movement that needs to happen.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_02]: I'm thinking of Dean coming up to Kirk.
- 40:19[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, hey, Kirk, some of the guys.
- 40:21[SPEAKER_02]: Not me, you know, but some of the guys really want to hit you in the face if you don't shut up.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_02]: Okay.
- 40:25[SPEAKER_00]: Bye.
- 40:25[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
- 40:26[SPEAKER_00]: Also, Dave forgotsky running.
- 40:29[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, the run, the run.
- 40:32[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like this one is kind of falling into that camp.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's like two sort of Kenny, Kenny camps, if you will.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Kenny episode camps where it's like, it really feels like his presence was true vision there in terms of like, they shoot Gilmore's Don't Day.
- 40:46[SPEAKER_00]: Versus like, this feels like a regular episode that he's.
- 40:49[SPEAKER_00]: Correcting and it's a good episode.
- 40:52[SPEAKER_00]: I love it's a fantastic episode.
- 40:54[SPEAKER_02]: They didn't just bring him in for episodes that were acquired the exact discerning eye that we were just talking about when it comes to these shoot Gilmours don't they?
- 41:03[SPEAKER_02]: And later episodes like you don't buy jump jack fright and it's all right for fighting which are like oh this is so notable that Kenny directed this because this is choreographed in a very specific way that they brought him in
- 41:12[SPEAKER_02]: four episodes like face-off and other ones that we'll talk about in just a minute.
- 41:17[SPEAKER_00]: But I love that.
- 41:19[SPEAKER_00]: I love that too.
- 41:20[SPEAKER_00]: And that's the thing is like when you see Kenny's name, regardless of the fact of something spectacular as happening.
- 41:27[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because like it doesn't have to be like back to goal.
- 41:29[SPEAKER_00]: And like as much as things can be a spectacle and so it's hollow.
- 41:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's like it's very specific But I just feel like sometimes he's just there.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, Droughton and really good episode.
- 41:38[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: Like a good episode in particular is a family matter and season four written by Dan, um, directed by Droughton.
- 41:45[SPEAKER_00]: directed by Kenny, of course.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_00]: I just, this was one of those episodes that like, it ends, well, like the big Luke storyline is that Jess's car has gone missing, and they find it at the end, and he was like, I couldn't do anything about it because it was registered to the guy who took it.
- 42:01[SPEAKER_00]: He was like, well, as mine, and he goes, no, it's, and then Luke says, Jess, Mariana, and you're like, ah, he comes out, and it's just so good.
- 42:11[SPEAKER_00]: Boy, does he come out?
- 42:13[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but I feel like what's really interesting about that is that when Dan and Kenny are doing episodes together I feel like there's like kind of an arc with them because like from a deep fried Korean Thanksgiving We have that sort of like back and forth with Dean and Jess, but like it's like this new thing with Jess.
- 42:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's like a family matter
- 42:35[SPEAKER_00]: because it's Thanksgiving, but then we flip forward to a family matter and Jess is angry to be back in Luke's diner.
- 42:42[SPEAKER_00]: So like seeing those sort of like connect to each other a little bit feels right, it gets a lot more I feel like a parent as we move through the rest of the series with Kenny and Dan, but I was trying to kind of like connect those and I feel like it's just like something about Dan and Kenny.
- 42:58[SPEAKER_00]: Man, all the others are so good.
- 43:00[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, for sure.
- 43:01[SPEAKER_02]: And before we move on from season four, I do want to know because there were there was of course some research I did on Reddit because I was like, What are the people saying about Kenny on Reddit?
- 43:14[SPEAKER_02]: Does anybody have anything like it?
- 43:15[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't regret it and look up Gilmore Girls.
- 43:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm afraid we're going to come out and see us.
- 43:19[SPEAKER_02]: No, no.
- 43:22[SPEAKER_02]: I wanted to know if anybody had an insight on the history of Kenny or take out and how he was kind of introduced into the world of Gilmore Girls.
- 43:30[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't find that, but what I did find was so hard to find anything about Kenny and his relationship to the show and how it began.
- 43:39[SPEAKER_02]: Well, that's why I think it's a perfect opportunity for us to just tell you about it.
- 43:44[SPEAKER_02]: But...
- 43:45[SPEAKER_02]: What I loved is that someone mentioned that Monique Coleman, who played Taylor in high school musical, she isn't an episode in season four at the Yale Daily News, and at the end of high school musical three, senior year, she's going to Yale, her character's going to Yale, and I was like, oh my god, that's so funny.
- 44:00[SPEAKER_02]: However, we debunking it a little bit, it is...
- 44:04[SPEAKER_02]: You know season four of Gilmore girls took place in what 2003 2004.
- 44:08[SPEAKER_02]: This was long before High school years before, but I wonder I really do wonder if that was I don't know if they would think that deeply about it in place that Easter egg inside of high school music She would know she would know can he my remember maybe
- 44:24[SPEAKER_02]: But I thought that was a really fun time because it was definitely like her being in college took place before her being in high school in high school in high school in school So I don't know that we can necessarily directly correlate them sure I can.
- 44:36[SPEAKER_02]: I thought it was really fun.
- 44:38[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I do like what a fun little timet.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_00]: What a fun little timet.
- 44:41[SPEAKER_02]: She was not however in an episode that Kenny directed she was in the nanny and the professor, which I believe was two episodes prior to a family matter
- 44:52[SPEAKER_00]: But I feel like you would connect over shared history.
- 44:55[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, oh my gosh, you tried to come over, I was on an episode of Come On Girls.
- 44:58[SPEAKER_00]: What episode?
- 44:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I was at Yale.
- 45:01[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 45:02[SPEAKER_00]: You have those conversations with writers with the director, you know, to bond.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_00]: But moving into season five, written in the stars, written by Amy, directed by Kenny.
- 45:15[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why I forgot his name in the middle of the episode.
- 45:19[SPEAKER_00]: iconic, iconic app, great episode.
- 45:23[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing sort of spectacle happens other than the introduction of Logan Huntsburger, which Laura live walking down in her, or not her, in Luke's shirt to the diner.
- 45:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 45:38[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, again, it's not that anything necessarily like spectacular happens physically in the form of dance, choreography, et cetera.
- 45:50[SPEAKER_02]: But I love that he could just direct a tone meeting.
- 45:52[SPEAKER_02]: I love that this is kind of an interesting, a tone, a tone meeting, a tone meeting.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, a tone meeting.
- 46:00[SPEAKER_02]: I love that.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_02]: the next episode he directs is you jump high jump jack and we're getting the introduction of worry and Logan meeting and we're going to send the introduction to their courtship.
- 46:09[SPEAKER_02]: So I love that they kind of hold hands.
- 46:12[SPEAKER_00]: I see, I feel like a lot of Kenny Episodes actually really holding hands.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
- 46:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's like from deep fried to a family matter to written in the stars with Logan and Rory, the wake, the town meeting, so many huge things happening, and then we get to you jump, which like this is, this is like classic Gilmore girls written by Dan Paladino, directed by Kenny Ortega.
- 46:39[SPEAKER_00]: I honestly think one of their most important episodes that they do together because it spends off in various directions from this point of them together.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: Totally.
- 46:47[SPEAKER_00]: And this is again, when I was trying to, if you guys have the box at, you can go listen to Amy and Dan's commentary on this.
- 46:53[SPEAKER_00]: They do mention Kenneth Ortega.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_00]: I have to watch Titanic if I want to.
- 46:59[SPEAKER_02]: I have to watch it.
- 47:02[SPEAKER_02]: I have two copies right here.
- 47:05[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I actually don't, I have like the full box set.
- 47:08[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't know if that's on the full box set because it's like a special, um, it's like a special episode.
- 47:14[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't know if it's on the full app series box set, but I definitely know it's on the season five box set.
- 47:20[SPEAKER_00]: So if you guys want to hear them talk about the show, we have one copy of season five.
- 47:26[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I have it.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_02]: So I can maybe take a little look see, give it a little to watch.
- 47:33[SPEAKER_00]: And listen, I just remember, we didn't watch all the way until like the life and death Brigade knew.
- 47:39[SPEAKER_00]: And he just started it and his name came up and they're like, oh, our pal Kennaith.
- 47:44[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, does he professionally go by Kenny and personally go by Kennaith?
- 47:49[SPEAKER_00]: I was like, I have so many questions.
- 47:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, only it's the Dan's.
- 47:53[SPEAKER_00]: You know, it's the damn Daniel of it all for sure.
- 47:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but that one just makes so much sense that he's there because it's not only about the stunt itself It's about the movement of people in that event of, you know, the Safari-esque woods night that they have and then the next morning All of the people standing around doing all of the games and the activities and shooting the paint ball guns at the people
- 48:23[SPEAKER_00]: Mostly thin.
- 48:26[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that is a very choreographed event.
- 48:30[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, entire thing is orchestrated very deliberately from a directorial lens.
- 48:37[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I can't wait you to wait specifically.
- 48:41[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's not just about the jump.
- 48:43[SPEAKER_02]: with the umbrellas, every day around it is moving.
- 48:47[SPEAKER_02]: As you said, like the entire background, it's almost like a carousel around them as moving as they need to be the central focus.
- 48:55[SPEAKER_02]: And it's done so well.
- 48:56[SPEAKER_02]: And for those reasons, actually, I know that we moved on from season four.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_02]: I was surprised to see that he didn't direct last week fights, this week tights.
- 49:03[SPEAKER_02]: And it's not just about the dancing.
- 49:05[SPEAKER_02]: It's about the artistry and the theatrics that surround it.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I agree.
- 49:09[SPEAKER_02]: I could have seen him directing that episode for sure.
- 49:13[SPEAKER_00]: good episode.
- 49:14[SPEAKER_00]: I could have totally seen him doing that, especially in you jump when Rory and Logan are having that conversation and they're like monologueing back and forth through each other.
- 49:25[SPEAKER_00]: The way that they're moving through that, they're like walking and then they stop and then he moves very specifically and the way they walk away.
- 49:32[SPEAKER_00]: It's very clear that this was blocked to what it was going on around them, what they were saying, and it just feels like
- 49:40[SPEAKER_00]: You know, if it was like Kenny's there, he's even them.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_00]: You can see them him guiding them through this moment.
- 49:46[SPEAKER_00]: And I really really really love to know if that's true or if that's just me projecting Kenny into the moment because I know he directed it.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or if there was like Amy in this as well, which of course of course there was.
- 49:56[SPEAKER_02]: Of course there was, but I think that's part of the beauty of Kenny Ortega and his partnership with the Paladinos and why he directed so many episodes is because like there is a specific cadence to not only their voice,
- 50:10[SPEAKER_02]: Direct the show and I think that he hit that stride really well.
- 50:15[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and there's there's actually something kind of cool about that that You know, I couldn't tell that
- 50:24[SPEAKER_02]: The next episode Emily says hello was directed by Kenny Ortega because it's in the style of exactly what I was going to say to Gilmore's Basically the Paladino.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 50:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 50:34[SPEAKER_02]: That's how they direct.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_02]: That's the tone that they set for their show.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 50:38[SPEAKER_02]: And you fell into it so perfectly.
- 50:40[SPEAKER_00]: And that always interests me, and this is like again, this is like a lot of, I've actually Quite honestly feel like very Glad that we're doing this episode before we would talk to Kenny because now I'm like coming up with all the questions Yeah, but I really want to talk to you I want to know what the difference is between him Directly directing an episode like you jump where it's a big spectacle and then flipping over to Especially with Dan as the writer one of the paladinos as a writer and
- 51:07[SPEAKER_00]: than flipping over to Emily says hello as the director for like a less spectacular sort of episode that is no less good but is written by someone who isn't a palatino because this one was written by Rebecca Rand Kirchner who is most notable because she is one of the only series writers or the original series writers who goes on to write in season seven.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 51:28[SPEAKER_00]: Her and David S. Rose and Thor are the only previous writers who move into season seven.
- 51:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, great episode.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_00]: We really enjoyed this one.
- 51:35[SPEAKER_00]: That's what was kind of like a surprise for us that we really enjoyed as much as we did.
- 51:38[SPEAKER_00]: Is that the hand of Kenny or is like this like more of a partnership between him and the Paladino's directing this?
- 51:45[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's definitely something I would want to find out from him is like what was it like to direct alongside an episode they wrote versus direct alongside an episode that they didn't write even though their hands are in everything.
- 51:57[SPEAKER_02]: Like how it's how does that work?
- 52:03[SPEAKER_02]: move through like you said directing episodes that are like these heavy hitters like they shoot Gilmers don't they and you jump by jump jack and then kind of I don't want to even say shrinking that might not be the right word but just like trying to direct this show that
- 52:22[SPEAKER_02]: where Amy famously loves to make the big small and the small big, like how do you transition to those two things from a directorial standpoint?
- 52:30[SPEAKER_02]: I would really be interested to see how you move through or how he chose to move through those.
- 52:36[SPEAKER_00]: And also because TV is notably like the showrunners, really the one who's in charge versus on a movie set, the director is really the one who is guiding, who's at the helm.
- 52:46[SPEAKER_00]: So like what the difference between that is.
- 52:48[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that it really makes a lot of sense
- 52:52[SPEAKER_00]: I would call them simple just because no one's jumping off a scaffolding.
- 52:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 52:57[SPEAKER_00]: Well, yeah, but it's because like in those episodes and you jump it feels really natural Yeah, it's like he brings us like naturalistic style to those big moments like in the run around But even to Emily says hello, it all feels like it falls very naturally and like very life-like because it is life They are not cartoons
- 53:17[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but it just feels like it all fits really well.
- 53:20[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it will save the next one.
- 53:22[SPEAKER_00]: Come home, which was written by Jessica Queller is one of our least favorite episodes in season five.
- 53:28[SPEAKER_02]: It definitely is, but I do think that Emily says hello and come home.
- 53:32[SPEAKER_02]: They hold hands.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_00]: They do, they hold hands, like within the story itself, they really do.
- 53:39[SPEAKER_02]: It's, these are bookends for all intents and purposes, especially with Emily's storyline.
- 53:44[SPEAKER_02]: It's the Simon McLean story.
- 53:46[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and so... Simon McLean?
- 53:48[SPEAKER_02]: Kenny, kind of...
- 53:49[SPEAKER_00]: Spectacle.
- 53:49[SPEAKER_00]: There's a car accident.
- 53:50[SPEAKER_02]: There is a spectacle.
- 53:51[SPEAKER_02]: There's a car accident for sure, and that does require a bit of gravity.
- 53:56[SPEAKER_02]: But that does...
- 53:58[SPEAKER_02]: lend itself to, you know, I enjoy that it was the same director who is kind of taking your journey, you know, even though I'm not a big fan of this episode as a whole.
- 54:10[SPEAKER_00]: We're also building up to something that is so spectacular, which he did not direct, but I do like you pointing out that those arcs really are connected and Emily says hello and come home because like Emily says hello, we loved that episode, come home we were like,
- 54:30[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't even know that we didn't really love this one, but yeah, I think overall it's just because there's a lot of heavy hitters and five, especially a lot of heavy hitters that he does quite well.
- 54:40[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm really agree.
- 54:41[SPEAKER_00]: And speaking of heavy hitters, the next one he does is like one of the ultimate episodes.
- 54:46[SPEAKER_00]: And this is why I'm so like glad that we're like seeing the true arcs because the next one is from season 6 episode 8.
- 54:55[SPEAKER_00]: Let me hear your balladake as ringing out.
- 54:57[SPEAKER_00]: Written by Dan Pilate, you know, directed by Kenny Ortega.
- 55:00[SPEAKER_00]: Why did you drop out of yellow by Just Mary Ono?
- 55:03[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 55:04[SPEAKER_00]: correct.
- 55:05[SPEAKER_02]: I was kind of talking for God about this before we got on and telling him about the episode today and like what we're doing and what if he thinks well he was well because he's with the exception of knit people knit in season 7 he's seen on these episodes and I was like yeah you know we're talking
- 55:19[SPEAKER_02]: about the Kenny Ortega directed episodes today.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_02]: And I was listing off some of them and he was like, those are like some of the best slash most iconic episodes of Gilmore girls.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_02]: And I was like, yeah, exactly.
- 55:28[SPEAKER_02]: I said, but I had no idea that he was behind the camera.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_02]: When Jess Mariano said, why did you drop out of Yale?
- 55:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 55:37[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like,
- 55:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, come on, but speaking of holding hands, you jump holds hands so clearly speaking of bookends.
- 55:47[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because that's like the Rory and Logan, like one of my favorite parallels in the whole series, which is Rory and Logan when in you jump when he says it's your choice ace.
- 55:58[SPEAKER_00]: And she says, let's go.
- 55:59[SPEAKER_00]: And then on the other end of it, she says, in ballet, as she says, I don't want to go and he says,
- 56:07[SPEAKER_00]: and it's just like these gorgeous moments with Dan and Kenny who I just imagine are like skipping through those scenes as they're happening because they're just such gorgeous bookends.
- 56:17[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but also bringing it back to like deep fried because that's when like her and just have like that like cutie moment like when they get back from Thanksgiving they like kiss and then
- 56:27[SPEAKER_00]: Dean sees it happen.
- 56:30[SPEAKER_00]: I'm but also they shoot Gilmour's when like that all happens and then a family matter When they have this when she sees him through the window and then when we get back into Just coming back again just as Re-return once again.
- 56:45[SPEAKER_00]: He loves to do justice return
- 56:49[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I just feel like it's like there's all these like if we were making this on a wall We'd have like streams strings and just to yeah, everything to like to like connect all the arcs that he does Cause I just feel like that one really is pivotal.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, you jump out.
- 57:03[SPEAKER_02]: I'm Jack to let me hear about like as very very
- 57:07[SPEAKER_02]: iconic.
- 57:08[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, yeah, and I but not for like the big iconic moments.
- 57:14[SPEAKER_00]: It's really just like, it was just so nice.
- 57:15[SPEAKER_02]: Again, like something so small that it's made big by our podcast and of course with the intention that Amy had behind it.
- 57:25[SPEAKER_02]: something so small.
- 57:26[SPEAKER_02]: It is made big.
- 57:28[SPEAKER_02]: It is made big.
- 57:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 57:31[SPEAKER_00]: On the details, the details are the big moments.
- 57:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 57:34[SPEAKER_00]: And I love that in a Kenny Mortica episode, which feels grandiose in a lot of ways, but it's always that little moment.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 57:41[SPEAKER_00]: It's always the little moment.
- 57:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I love that they're both written and directed, or they're both written and directed by Dan and Kenny, respectively.
- 57:48[SPEAKER_02]: And there has to be so much intention behind that, that I love looking at those little details.
- 57:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because looking at deep-fried looking at a family matter, you jump.
- 57:58[SPEAKER_00]: Let me hear your ballet because writing out all Dan, which then, the next episode.
- 58:04[SPEAKER_00]: not to like gloss over, let me hear about Lika's, but it's just really that just moment that really gets you because there's like not like a ton out's going on in that episode that doesn't feel outside of just like the very natural quality of a Gilmore girl's episode.
- 58:17[SPEAKER_00]: He's up in a bread day, is Thanksgiving.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
- 58:20[SPEAKER_00]: And so what's can he doing coming back for another Thanksgiving episode?
- 58:25[SPEAKER_00]: The only other Thanksgiving episode written by Dan directed by Kenyass.
- 58:29[SPEAKER_00]: Crazy.
- 58:30[SPEAKER_00]: And I just feel like I'm so so fitting.
- 58:33[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, also musically in clients.
- 58:35[SPEAKER_00]: We have Lane's band day.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 58:37[SPEAKER_00]: I call it Lade Band.
- 58:39[SPEAKER_00]: Lane's band performing.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 58:41[SPEAKER_00]: Happy, Lian.
- 58:42[SPEAKER_00]: If you will.
- 58:44[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, this is the dig part.
- 58:46[SPEAKER_00]: Right?
- 58:47[SPEAKER_00]: Or is this slip in a bread?
- 58:49[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think this is a dick part.
- 58:51[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is a dick, this is dick.
- 58:52[SPEAKER_00]: You're so right.
- 58:53[SPEAKER_00]: Because we have the tambourine, Joel, Joel.
- 58:56[SPEAKER_00]: Vame is like, we got to, we got to be in Kenny Ortega for the tambourine moment, of course, of course.
- 59:03[SPEAKER_00]: But I just love that he, in terms of an arc, we're bringing Kenny back for Thanksgiving and perfect.
- 59:11[SPEAKER_02]: I love that.
- 59:12[SPEAKER_02]: I love that they're tied together by arguably like,
- 59:17[SPEAKER_02]: two of the only true holiday episodes that we get from Amy and Dan I know we have a little bit of Christmas sprinkled in there but for the most part they really celebrate yeah they really celebrate Thanksgiving on the show that is something that's what we like in Kelly's memoir they love Thanksgiving and I respect that I can love that for them can we should we have a Thanksgiving special from the Gilmore's versus Christmas special
- 59:41[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we've got got Christmas specials, so I think there is something that's really great about that, but like knowing how much the palletino's love Thanksgiving and that we never got Christmas I'm kind of okay with it if we had another Thanksgiving special
- 59:57[SPEAKER_02]: that they will figure out what's best for the Gomorgos universe in that list.
- 1:00:03[SPEAKER_02]: You guys don't even know if it would be a Christmas special or if it would be like a holiday winter special.
- 1:00:12[SPEAKER_00]: Because they do prefer a season.
- 1:00:14[SPEAKER_02]: They do prefer seasons.
- 1:00:15[SPEAKER_02]: But we'll see.
- 1:00:17[SPEAKER_02]: We have thoughts about that later this year.
- 1:00:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I can't wait to share it.
- 1:00:20[SPEAKER_00]: I want it so much.
- 1:00:21[SPEAKER_00]: I've never since Lauren Graham said it.
- 1:00:23[SPEAKER_00]: I was I'm always been the one that's like no, we don't need any more Gilmore girls And then Lauren Graham said how about a Christmas special?
- 1:00:28[SPEAKER_00]: I said yes Sign me up.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_01]: Sign me up.
- 1:00:31[SPEAKER_00]: I'll first row.
- 1:00:32[SPEAKER_01]: I'll take it
- 1:00:34[SPEAKER_00]: Doesn't exist, but I've already got to take it so I love it my mind can change it a moment to notice it seems more and it seems more and it seems more and it seems more easily swayed over here.
- 1:00:42[SPEAKER_02]: So moving into the last episode that is a Paladino or Tega crossover, a collab call, the ultimate.
- 1:00:51[SPEAKER_02]: It's pretty much the ultimate as far as I'm concerned.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: This is it.
- 1:00:54[SPEAKER_00]: This is the moment.
- 1:00:55[SPEAKER_02]: François, perfect.
- 1:00:57[SPEAKER_02]: Does it?
- 1:00:58[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and this was written by Amy Sherman Paladino
- 1:01:04[SPEAKER_02]: you can just see it.
- 1:01:06[SPEAKER_02]: You can see his hand prints all over this episode.
- 1:01:10[SPEAKER_02]: It's not.
- 1:01:12[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not just that final scene.
- 1:01:14[SPEAKER_00]: No, because like that, that or it's not even just, it's not the final scene, but it is the final real sequence.
- 1:01:22[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, it says like hand cam, someone called it the real housewives of Gilmore girls are like heartvered or whatever we start to follow, where they are just
- 1:01:34[SPEAKER_00]: It's so clear that someone with this kind of eye is going to be the one behind the camera, especially on an Amy episode, it just feels so perfectly suited towards his abilities.
- 1:01:47[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that even more so than that, it goes beyond just that, the way that the camera works throughout the whole episode, because Friday night's alright for Friday, is, of course, same as for the fight.
- 1:01:56[SPEAKER_01]: on Friday night course.
- 1:01:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but this is also Rory and Logan saving the Yale Daily News because Paris has, you know, in her Heidi hole and is trying to take on the whole paper and the paper's not going to go out on a day, the paper went out, whatever, whatever, and Rory's supposed to go on a date with Logan and she forgets and then Logan shows up at the newsroom.
- 1:02:16[SPEAKER_00]: And there's this camera move that I have always loved in this episode where when Logan walks in, the camera's pretty far from him, but it does like a really quick zoom into him.
- 1:02:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I've always loved what the camera does there.
- 1:02:28[SPEAKER_00]: And it just feels like different than what the Paladino's normally do.
- 1:02:32[SPEAKER_00]: But I was like, it feels like Kenny, like you feel him in this episode, like the way that everything is moving around.
- 1:02:37[SPEAKER_00]: And like the chaos of the newsroom also feels like
- 1:02:43[SPEAKER_00]: Um, it's sometimes I think that that episode surprises me that it's not a Dana episode.
- 1:02:48[SPEAKER_00]: Like it's obvious that it's an Amy episode, but like the newsroom reminds me of town meeting sometimes.
- 1:02:54[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:02:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so I always feel like those are gonna be Dana episodes, but that one's an Amy, which like doesn't mean that Dan wasn't involved in it, but it's that episode.
- 1:03:02[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like it's credited for the end of it, but throughout it, it really feels like there's like a ton of movement going on throughout.
- 1:03:10[SPEAKER_00]: because tell me if, correct me if I'm wrong.
- 1:03:13[SPEAKER_00]: Is that also the episode where Laura likes it's in the window and watches April do her homework?
- 1:03:18[SPEAKER_00]: And all the people push up behind her?
- 1:03:20[SPEAKER_00]: I think it is.
- 1:03:22[SPEAKER_00]: So like as far as spectacle's go and stars hollow.
- 1:03:26[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's really as spectacle as it goes in like the naturalistic nature of it, like the day to day of stars hauling.
- 1:03:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:03:34[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that that speaks to the one episode they brought him back for in season seven, which is Nick people knit.
- 1:03:39[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a, it's a Tony episode, you know, they're knitting for the old muddy bridge.
- 1:03:43[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and there is a music holiday in there.
- 1:03:46[SPEAKER_02]: What I meant to mention in, let me hear about Lake as ringing out,
- 1:03:54[SPEAKER_02]: Emily and they're trying to balance out kind of this scene with the ballet because that are playing.
- 1:03:59[SPEAKER_02]: So I do think that Kenny does that like balancing of music or choreography behind a conversation really, really well.
- 1:04:07[SPEAKER_02]: And you could kind of apply the same
- 1:04:10[SPEAKER_02]: lens to knit people knit if we even want to consider season seven and all of this that we will yeah because it's a town event there's a lot going on they have to zero on and on some of these characters yeah
- 1:04:25[SPEAKER_00]: But they also go on going on in the square.
- 1:04:29[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of movement, a lot of things taking place.
- 1:04:32[SPEAKER_02]: But what I feel like I see him is actually in the 2000s party when Paris and Doyle are dancing in the center of the country.
- 1:04:38[SPEAKER_02]: So you see, they party.
- 1:04:40[SPEAKER_02]: I kind of see a lot of Kenny in that because that is, it's giving like, is that 2001, is that what they're doing?
- 1:04:46[SPEAKER_00]: That's not too.
- 1:04:47[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't do party.
- 1:04:48[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:04:49[SPEAKER_02]: And famously in 2002, Kenny was directing the opening for the Olympics.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_02]: Really pretty.
- 1:04:56[SPEAKER_00]: I did it.
- 1:04:57[SPEAKER_02]: They were just like flag holders, fibers, but no, I can kind of see that like camaraderie of like younger folks in like how he's able to do that in high school musical.
- 1:05:11[SPEAKER_02]: And I could see that kind of that thread a little bit, but this one was a bit of a reach for me to kind of like find the Kenny Ortega within this episode.
- 1:05:19[SPEAKER_02]: Mostly because I just find season seven as a whole to be really tough to watch.
- 1:05:24[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, I've got the deep run and back for one episode because if you can't have the Paladinos, like, you know, bringing someone in who can kind of
- 1:05:32[SPEAKER_02]: put a little bit of that energy in there.
- 1:05:35[SPEAKER_02]: And it's important.
- 1:05:36[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if I feel like, oh, I can't find Kenny in this because I don't see the Paladino's in it.
- 1:05:43[SPEAKER_00]: And like, that's really where I see him aligning.
- 1:05:45[SPEAKER_00]: Because I remember not hating this episode.
- 1:05:48[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, we, this one was pretty, we enjoyed it.
- 1:05:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, enjoy the most part.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 1:05:53[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that he added that to it.
- 1:05:56[SPEAKER_00]: I agree.
- 1:05:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was written by David Gray.
- 1:05:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, different than David Gray.
- 1:06:02[SPEAKER_00]: This is G-R-8-E. And I think that it just had that element to it that Kenny brings to anything that just feels the makes of feeling joyful.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_00]: Feel it good.
- 1:06:12[SPEAKER_00]: Um, but this isn't this is definitely a question.
- 1:06:16[SPEAKER_00]: I would want to ask him is what was it like coming back to Gilmar girls?
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 1:06:19[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not having the land in there.
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
- 1:06:21[SPEAKER_00]: It's like everyone else is the same.
- 1:06:22[SPEAKER_00]: You've got all your most notable players, but you were only here.
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_00]: What?
- 1:06:24[SPEAKER_00]: Like, uh, one season ago with your favorite people or maybe, maybe not his favorite people or our favorite people at least.
- 1:06:27[SPEAKER_00]: That, like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that like, what was that
- 1:06:39[SPEAKER_00]: pal adena pal adena pal's yeah um so i do i would want to know what that was like for him if it if it was really that different i imagine it was very different because it was very different for most people but that's definitely a question i would want to ask him which maybe this episode is just titled questions for Kenny or takah questions we'd like to ask Kenny or takah Kenny or takah yeah but i love to do in kind of a deep dive into him and all of the episodes that he did and trying to really you know
- 1:07:06[SPEAKER_02]: tie some of them together.
- 1:07:08[SPEAKER_02]: Like you said, if we put them all up on a board and put some string up, we would be all over the place, which would be all up.
- 1:07:15[SPEAKER_02]: But is there a favorite that you have?
- 1:07:17[SPEAKER_02]: I know we talked about some being super, super iconic.
- 1:07:19[SPEAKER_02]: But is there one that you're just like this funny is the ultimate Kenny Ortega episode?
- 1:07:23[SPEAKER_00]: Well, see the thing is it's like, you have to then think about what makes a Kenny, are we thinking of like ultimate Kenny Ortega episode?
- 1:07:31[SPEAKER_00]: Or is it like
- 1:07:35[SPEAKER_02]: Because it's like, is it because you're torn between Friday and it's all right for finding, and they shoot Gilmourge don't they?
- 1:07:40[SPEAKER_00]: No, because here's the thing, they shoot Gilmourge don't, like, if you're looking at these, a lot of these are on our top face, like, they shoot Gilmourge don't they, a deep red Korean Thanksgiving, written in the stars did not make our top 25, but it is up there.
- 1:07:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you jump by, John Jack, was just barely, um, just, I think it was number 25.
- 1:07:57[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, um, right in Nice to meet you.
- 1:08:00[SPEAKER_00]: But also, let me hear about, like, is ringing out, well, it didn't make it.
- 1:08:03[SPEAKER_00]: It still is, like, that iconic moment.
- 1:08:06[SPEAKER_00]: So I think it is that girl, yeah.
- 1:08:08[SPEAKER_00]: She's, she's so is that girl.
- 1:08:09[SPEAKER_02]: And like, between Friday nights, all right for feigning, they should go more as entity fried Korean Thanksgiving.
- 1:08:13[SPEAKER_02]: Those are in our top 10.
- 1:08:15[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I'm saying.
- 1:08:16[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, it's so hard to then look at it and be like, this is the ultimate.
- 1:08:20[SPEAKER_00]: Because those top three, 100% there.
- 1:08:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like, that's, you can,
- 1:08:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I think that maybe because of those, you can feel Kenny the most in them, 100% even a new jump, which is number 25, which out of 157, what a sled.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty good.
- 1:08:35[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty good.
- 1:08:36[SPEAKER_00]: Pretty good for herself.
- 1:08:38[SPEAKER_00]: But like you think about what's iconic about that episode, and it is the spectacle.
- 1:08:43[SPEAKER_00]: It is the event, the life and death brigade event, which you can see him in that.
- 1:08:48[SPEAKER_00]: You can't see him because he's directing it.
- 1:08:50[SPEAKER_00]: you can feel him in that whole moment and so I'm like tempted to be like that is so him but then you look at the dance marathon and you're like that is so him and then you look at front and it's all right for fighting and you're like well that was so him too you know yeah and so the answer is they shoot kill marks don't they and with all of that said after the
- 1:09:19[SPEAKER_02]: But I do think he is most known for Friday night, sorry for fighting in the Gilmore Girls universe because I think a lot of people affiliate that last sequence with him.
- 1:09:30[SPEAKER_02]: Of course.
- 1:09:31[SPEAKER_02]: And that's so understandable between that.
- 1:09:33[SPEAKER_02]: You don't find them dark and they shoot Gilmore's.
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_02]: Don't they?
- 1:09:35[SPEAKER_02]: I think a lot of people know who our Gilmore Girls fans and are deep in the lore that Kenny Ortega has his hands all over these episodes.
- 1:09:43[SPEAKER_00]: But that's actually what I was wondering, is like, how many of y'all, how many of y'all like was this like a surprise and you're like, whoa, can you or take a directed on Gilmore girls?
- 1:09:52[SPEAKER_00]: Or if you're like, oh, I knew this, but not as expansive as if this or if you're like, you guys were just, yeah, you guys were just running into the choir, you know, for years.
- 1:10:02[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think through it, it'll probably be a spectrum because for me, there are a lot of things here that I didn't know about Kenny until I did a lot of research last night in this morning.
- 1:10:10[SPEAKER_02]: But yeah,
- 1:10:11[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully you guys had fun learning a little bit more about him and I really wanted to get there.
- 1:10:16[SPEAKER_02]: Truly brought started singing that when I told him.
- 1:10:20[SPEAKER_00]: We all in this episode was it where she said we're all in this together.
- 1:10:24[SPEAKER_00]: And we were like, was that a high school musical reference from their good friend Kenneth Ortega?
- 1:10:29[SPEAKER_00]: Because we like did the kind of math of like who's nice.
- 1:10:33[SPEAKER_00]: Laura Lye or it was they were sitting in Luke's diner specifically.
- 1:10:37[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it wasn't Laura Lye.
- 1:10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe it was Suki.
- 1:10:39[SPEAKER_00]: I'm thinking you it's maybe like in wedding planning or something.
- 1:10:42[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember exactly what it was.
- 1:10:44[SPEAKER_00]: But we were trying to map out when like high school musical would have come out.
- 1:10:50[SPEAKER_00]: Versus like when Kenny would have worked on it and like Amy and Dan probably would have known these songs that he was like choreographing to And I can't remember what it was.
- 1:11:00[SPEAKER_00]: Oh This just came back to me when we said we're all in this together.

- 1:11:13[SPEAKER_00]: next year.
- 1:11:15[SPEAKER_00]: No, you know what I'm going to do between this episode and our next episode, I'm going to go through season six because I know there was a moment.
- 1:11:22[SPEAKER_00]: I might even just go through revisited and see when we talked about that because there is a moment, you know, I honestly could probably go through my revisited notes.
- 1:11:30[SPEAKER_00]: I will get back to all of you, and I will let you know, or we will realize this was fruitless.
- 1:11:36[SPEAKER_02]: Either one, but I'm glad we got to do a little deep dive on it, Kenny, it kind of or take us.
- 1:11:50[SPEAKER_02]: learning and discovering like all the different crevices of the show and new things.
- 1:11:54[SPEAKER_02]: I maybe didn't know tying them to other episodes just like man the Laura runs deep.
