- 0:01We start from the ego consciousness, and we treat
- 0:04ourselves from that standpoint as independent, separate and
- 0:09walled off from all other beings interacting with them, from our
- 0:15insulated status. When we then turn to spiritual
- 0:20growth and development from this standpoint, we start by looking
- 0:24at it as something that the individual can accomplish
- 0:27regardless of the status of the rest of humanity or the world as
- 0:31a whole. As long as we remain active in
- 0:34the world, we are inevitably part of the vital interchange
- 0:38that takes place, and we receive vibrations from all those around
- 0:43us, and we send out vibrations similarly to others.
- 0:48There is no way to avoid this. The ascetic approach seeks to
- 0:53minimize this interchange, focus the entire being on liberation,
- 0:58and involves essentially an attempt to disconnect the
- 1:01individual from the rest of human existence.
- 1:05Even this turns out to be fallacious.
- 1:09No matter how isolated 1 seeks to be, when the ascetic takes up
- 1:14the begging bowl to go into society, he is involving himself
- 1:18in that interchange. Even if he lives entirely
- 1:22secluded, he still carries with him the sum scars of his birth
- 1:27and past lifetimes, as well as the basic subtle energetic
- 1:31connection to all life around him.
- 1:36Even at a considerable distance, the impacts from the vital
- 1:40interchange in the world still reach him.
- 1:43It may be possible to take this interchange down to a bare
- 1:47minimum and thereby undertake to eventually drop the body and
- 1:52liberate the spirit from the body, but this is not part of
- 1:56what may be called mastery, but rather a form of avoidance.
- 2:02There is a role to play for the sannyasin, the ascetic following
- 2:08his spiritual path with one pointed concentration, of
- 2:11course, and we can honor their commitment to the quest.
- 2:16In a world steeped in materialism and a fixation with
- 2:20the purely external, the sanyasin provides a needed
- 2:25balance. An individual may make
- 2:29considerable progress within the framework of current
- 2:32possibilities. Of course, there have always
- 2:35been individuals who have focused their lives on spiritual
- 2:38development and who have become great seers, rishis, sages,
- 2:44yogis or spiritual leaders. And there may be exceptions to
- 2:50the general rule, particularly in the case of individuals who
- 2:54have taken birth for the express purpose of ushering in a focus
- 2:59on the next phase of development, a process which has
- 3:03been called avatar hood by some spiritual paths.
- 3:07Generally, however, their focus is on the next step, so they are
- 3:12based within the current capacity and framework of the
- 3:15society, even if out on the upper edge of that capacity.
- 3:22Complete mastery can only come when the seeker is able to
- 3:26handle all of the vital interactions and process them in
- 3:29a way that maintains his spiritual focus regardless.
- 3:34That is one of the core messages we find in the Bhagwad Gita.
- 3:38Avoidance of the role in society is not the answer to achieve
- 3:42mastery. Rather, yoga is skill in works,
- 3:47and other statements make it clear the road to mastery lies
- 3:51through the interactions and not through avoidance.
- 3:56This brings us then to the relationship between individual
- 4:00progress and the general status of human progress.
- 4:04The individual may lead the way, but without some amount of
- 4:08preparation and general development, progress eventually
- 4:12reaches a point of stagnation or standstill.
- 4:16Srioro Bindo refers to a process of ascent and integration, where
- 4:23the ascent brings the connection to the spiritual force that is
- 4:27evolving and the integration brings it down into the life and
- 4:32makes it real at the level of human existence.
- 4:36This process works both for the individual satna and for the
- 4:41general process of evolution of the society.
- 4:45The general progress creates a more receptive field within
- 4:48which the individual can grow and develop.
- 4:52There is a greater readiness, there is less general opposition
- 4:56or friction, and as the general capacity grows, the individual
- 5:01can use that as a platform for his further progress.
- 5:06As the individual grows, his influence back into the society
- 5:10helps the society achieve a further status of readiness and
- 5:15preparation for its own development.
- 5:19The 100th monkey phenomenon that has been widely described
- 5:23represents this interactive process of the individual
- 5:27leading the way, influencing others, and eventually creating
- 5:32a new capacity within the society, which presumably opens
- 5:36the door to next steps available to the individuals who are
- 5:41aspiring toward greater progress.
- 5:45A disciple asks, does an individual mastery over desire
- 5:49suffice, or is a general collective mastery necessary?
- 5:55The mother notes quote. Ah, there we are.
- 6:01Is it possible to attain a total personal transformation without
- 6:05there being at least a correspondence in the
- 6:07collectivity? This does not seem possible to
- 6:11me. There is such an interdependence
- 6:14between the individual and the collectivity that unless one
- 6:18does what the ascetics have preached, that is, escapes from
- 6:22the world, goes out of it completely, leaves it where it
- 6:26is, and runs away, selfishly leaving all the work to others.
- 6:31Unless one does that, and Even so, I have my doubts.
- 6:35Is it possible to accomplish a total transformation of one's
- 6:39being so long as the collectivity has not reached at
- 6:43least a certain degree of transformation?
- 6:47I don't think so. Human nature remains what it is.
- 6:52One can attain a great change of consciousness that yes, one can
- 6:57purify one's consciousness, but the total conquest, the material
- 7:02transformation, depends definitely to a large extent on
- 7:08a certain degree of progress in the collectivity.
- 7:12Bhuta said with reason that as long as you have in you a
- 7:16vibration of desire, this vibration will spread in the
- 7:20world and all those who are ready to receive it will receive
- 7:24it. In the same way, if you have in
- 7:27you the least receptivity to a vibration of desire, you will be
- 7:32open to all the vibrations of desire which circulate
- 7:36constantly in the world. And quote reference Sri
