- 1:00we celebrate our eleven hundred and fiftieth episode with an episode called Homicide for Hannah.
- 1:11It was from the Molay Mystery Theater, which was one of those great
- 1:15detective anthology shows. It ran from nineteen forty three to forty eight and was
- 1:21sponsored by Molay Shaving Cream. And I think we'll even end up playing one
- 1:26of those episodes over on the War. This is one of the earlier episodes
- 1:33in existence. The title is Homicide for Hannah. The original air date was
- 1:38December the twenty eighth of nineteen forty three, and I didn't play this episode
- 1:42the first time I was planning on doing it because I looked up and I
- 1:46saw that Jim Widner, who does the excellent radio detective story Hour, had
- 1:52just played it. But now it's been five months since he played it,
- 1:57So I feel okay going ahead and Plane, I didn't. We're not repeating
- 2:00anything too much for a listener. Uh. This actually was an adaptation of
- 2:08a novel into a half hour story. Always a difficult proposition. And the
- 2:16uh it was actually from a series of novels by UH Black Mask Magazine author
- 2:25White the Babcock, featuring this character of Hanna van Dorn, and this was
- 2:31her first documented case in the series. So here now from the Molley Mystery
- 2:38Theater is homicide for Hannah just a moment. Have you heard the Molle Mystery
- 2:44Theater. Don't leave your radio? Good follows immediately. Molay m O l

- 11:50He was with me all the time? O'Connor, Oh, I wasn't with

- 12:28and then I joined Terry at Balone Bar. We've been together ever since.
- 12:31That's right, Yes, that's about all for now. If you're not in
- 12:37the clay by any means, Kirby, I won't pull you in the head.
- 12:39Thanks for noting, Terry, my boy. How about you and me
- 12:41getting down of the paper knocking out some copy of this murder. It'll be
- 12:45a scoop for it? Yeah, yet for better coming with me? Asked,
- 12:48No, I want to stay and talk to Joe a few minutes.
- 12:50Who were you up too, miss Unlarne? Why nothing, Inspector. I
- 12:52just want to have a private interview with mister Kirby, so when you solve
- 12:56the case, i'll have all the background. I need to ash your fire
- 12:58magazine, I see. I want to get it now before mister Kirby has
- 13:01to start combing reporters out of his hair. And I wouldn't worry about that.
- 13:05I'll leave Madden outside the door, just so Kirby won't be bothered,
- 13:09of course, and of course that's nice of your inspected. Now get out
- 13:11all of you. I can't get my interview with you cluttering out the flow,
- 13:13Okay, song long Joffrey Letter, Well, John Chilian here is I'm

- 13:41My mother died when I was a child, and my father was killed five
- 13:43years ago. He was a captain of detective an orphaner. Well, I'm
- 13:46an orphan too. Fate must have thrown it together so I can take care

- 13:56like this? Oh that's jiu jitsu? You want to play some more?
- 14:05No fight? Yeah, I don't know. You'd turn out to be a
- 14:09female stranger. Louis just trying to get better acquainted. Here I get slammed
- 14:13against my own walls. I hope I didn't really hurt your fast. I
- 14:16live, and I'll have to find a murderer. It's safer than making love
- 14:20for you. But don't forget. We're going to the opening of the races

- 15:20to the party and know how to get home to his mother. You see,
- 15:22she's run and she gets tightened and knows it's the way too long.
- 15:26Isn't that right, Milk? Yes, indeed you're run. Okay, that's
- 15:28your story. I didn't mention you with the cops anyway, thanks very much.

- 16:04Terry O'Connor. Fright, Terry, oh Terry oh kill didn't stick around.
- 16:08I'll have some tips for you. Hey, Joe, let me in up
- 16:11the stairs. Thank by the paddock in a few minutes. I've got hot
- 16:15tip in the murder. Yeah, what it seems old. Jake Wurtzel had
- 16:17another name once back in Chicago, and nuts shit, I'm single. Well
- 16:21i'll see it. Well, well, beauty and the beast greeting's respected.
- 16:26Go away. Angle. You give me indigestion first, you steal my girl,
- 16:29and you want to drive me away? Did you hear the newest guess
- 16:32about your murder? What is it? Some bright cop got the idea that
- 16:34Steve was killed by spies. This old man, Jake Wurtzel just embedded a
- 16:38chemical, the neutralizing chlorine gas. This guy thinks they tried to get the
- 16:42secret out of Steve and kill him when they failed. I think it's nuts
- 16:45and so the why, Well, I'm glad somebody doesn't think I'm the murderer.
- 16:49Well, come on, let's get away from here. Hannah, the
- 16:52airs bad. You know I'm covering the murder. Now. You wouldn't care
- 16:55to give me a statement? Would you missed the cunning? Yes? Stay
- 16:57away from me. Unquote thy conna. Would you do me a favor?
- 17:02Wait, do a minute. I have to go to the paddic see a
- 17:03man about a horse. I want to go along. You're going to meet
- 17:06carry and it has something to do with the murder. I heard him that
- 17:08stage woods for Terry Miles. Okay, come on, where's your secret meeting
- 17:12place, mister conspirator? Around the corner here and then those backstairs right over
- 17:18here. But no day say look he's on the floor. He's hurd Say
- 17:25Terry, Terry, Harry, what's the matter? Terry he's non answer,
- 17:32Joe, can't you see the knife in his throat? He's dead? Yeah?
- 17:34I see what about you? Joe? It's a cop. Find you
- 17:37here with another murder? There? What do you mean if there comes one?
- 17:40Right now? Let me do the talking, Joe, not me.
- 17:41I'm getting out of here. There's something I've got to find out. I'll
- 17:44see you later. Stop a good luck, Good luck Joe. Well,
- 18:07mystery fans, there's nothing like a few pistol shots to start some action.
- 18:11And plenty of action is just what we're headed for when our money mystery theater
- 18:15play resumes. You know, mister Barnes, what you just said is exactly
- 18:19Joe Moran's idea. Yes, Dan, how is that? Well, my
- 18:22old friend Joe is a real Molay fan who wants every man to enjoy the
- 18:26better shaves it gives. And he says that one good way for me to
- 18:30remind folks of how good Molay is and to stir them into action is by
- 18:33firing a pistol shot or so so. And what are you going to do
- 18:38about it, Dan, Well, just this, gentlemen. Of course,
- 18:41you realize that the little nix and scrapes you got while shaving today will make
- 18:47tomorrow shave all the more difficult. Well, why don't you buy Molay,
- 18:51the brustless shaving cream that puts space protection first. Olay has a special protective
- 18:56film, a film with more real body and substance than like fluffy cream.
- 19:00That film acts in a positive way to guard you are tender skin from irritating
- 19:04Nixon scrape. Also, Molay contains with abundance of beard softening ingredients and plenty
- 19:11of bland, non irritating oils. So gentlemen to enjoy shaves to get better
- 19:17and better. As Molay's protective film guards your face from Nixon scrapes, why
- 19:21don't you, Joe, Yes, that's right, chewed around to the store
- 19:25and fire a cuber jar of mll E. Molay Brushless shaving creane. Well,
- 19:33I'm out of ammunition and my story is told, So now here's mister
- 19:37Joe Kirby to bring you act too of homicide for hammer. Well, after
- 19:41Hannah and I found Kerry's body at the racetrack, the cop tried to stop
- 19:45me, but I got away and grant the cab into town. Terry had
- 19:48mentioned a clue and said he wanted to tell me more, just before he
- 19:52was killed. Maybe he had told his wife something about what he learned.
- 19:56It wasn't much go on, but it was my only chance. So I
- 20:00went to see Ida O'Connor at their home or law. They told you,
- 20:07why did you know about Terry? Yes, the paper, telephone, He's
- 20:14gone, Joe, Terry's gone. You know they're saying I did it.
- 20:18Yes, I know, but I don't believe it. But you were his
- 20:22friend. Thanks. You got to buck up for the kids. Sink.
- 20:26We can't bring Terry back, but I want to do something about it,
- 20:30and maybe you can help. When Terry was home last night, did he
- 20:33say anything about what he was working on about what happened at my place last
- 20:37night? Well? Yes, Well he was all excited. He said he
- 20:42had a chance to clear you completely in and it would meet a big bonus
- 20:47for him and maybe a raise. Where had he been either, Well,
- 20:49he'd been at the office going through some old newspapers. He showed me one
- 20:53of the clipping. But clipping you remember what it was about. It was
- 20:56about a murder trial in Chicago back in nineteen twenty five. I think a
- 21:03man named Wilson had killed another man had been acquitted. There are pictures of
- 21:07a man. I didn't read it except for the headline. It's not very
- 21:11definite, but I'll try to run it down. You keep your chin up
- 21:15at it. I'll get Terry's murderer if it's the last thing I do.
- 21:33Come in, Hello, Hannah. Oh, I start to do something dumb
- 21:37like coming back your own apartment where the police can find you easily. Well,
- 21:41I can't get away from them forever. I might as well be comfortable.
- 21:44Want to wait? Did you come straight here from the track? No?
- 21:45I was downtown reading some old newspapers. Would I don't suppose you thought
- 21:49of reading the last edition of today's paper while you were there? No?
- 21:52Why? Nothing excepted while you were running around making sure you have no alibis.
- 21:56Steve's father, old Jacob Littel, was killed Martin. Yes, hey,
- 22:00it's getting to be an epidemic. Well, heap, drink and be
- 22:03merry. How about a highball? Hannah? No, I want to talk.
- 22:07Please be serious. Yes, I'll be that's the cops. Now come
- 22:12in. Hello, jo Joe. If he nothold you he'd be here.
- 22:17Milton tried to argue me out of coming. He said, you wouldn't be
- 22:19here when I thought, was the police after him? Or you did?
- 22:22Did you with it down? Veronica? Thanks, We're gonna have white little
- 22:23gathering here. I'm expecting the police any minute, and we'll try out a
- 22:27little idea. I've got what sort of idea? Yes? What is it?
- 22:30Relax, Hannah, I'm just beginning to get smart. Now we wait
- 22:33for the police. You're here, the boy detect it, and I think
- 22:37I hear the ponderous tread of the law coming this way right now, And
- 22:41I thought you'd be here, Kirby. When I saw the visitors go in,
- 22:44I was especially glad to see miss Veronica Smith or I am why,
- 22:48I have a witness who places your car here last night? So I have
- 22:51a warrant charging you and Kirby with murdered. No, wait a minute,
- 22:55not so fast. You can't do that. No, I can't. Well,
- 22:57who's gonna stop me? But wait a minute, I know who committed
- 23:00all three murders. Better be with Kirby. What's your story? Well,
- 23:06originally the murderer had only intended to kill Steve Wurtzel and his father. Terry
- 23:10O'Connor was killed because he had a lead to the murderer, Kerry, where
- 23:12would he get a lead? I found out Terry had been looking up an
- 23:15old murder in Chicago in nineteen twenty five. That murderer was a man named
- 23:18Wilson, and he was acquitted. Interesting, but what does it have to
- 23:22do with this? There were pictures in the paper. Wilson was Jake Wurtzel,
- 23:26Steve's father, and Jake Wurtzel killed somebody. Well, Wurtzel or Wilson
- 23:30was a cosmetics manufacturer. Then he put an eyelash dye on the market that
- 23:33contained poison and several people were blind. He had a good lawyer, though
- 23:37he wasn't prosecuted. Well, where there's a killing, come in, and
- 23:40how there's a time with this time coming to that. The husband of one
- 23:42of the blinded women, a fellow named Katy, tried to kill Jake Wurtzel,
- 23:45but Wurtzel killed him first. So Wurtzel changed his name and came out
- 23:48to Hollywood. Right. Well, that blind woman and the man who was
- 23:52killed had a son. Oh, I'm beginning to get the idea right.
- 23:56I'm betting that son grew up with one idea to make the work, so's
- 24:00pay for his mother's suffering. And his father's dead. And who do you
- 24:03think this son is? Kirby. You moved here from Chicago, didn't you,
- 24:06Milt Romer, Yes, and your father is dead and your mother is
- 24:07blind. The name of his family was Katie, but it could have been
- 24:11changed later, just as Wurzels want. That's absurd. And Milt was here
- 24:15last night with Ronigan. She may have lied to protect him, but that's
- 24:18the only way she's implicating. I did lie. I lost my hand chip
- 24:22and Milt went back up after it. He told me that he tried Joe's
- 24:25door in it opened and he saw someone in there, dead on the floor.
- 24:27But I don't think he did it. Of course I didn't. Maybe
- 24:30you've made a case after old Kirby. Well, Robinson, you're making a
- 24:33terrible mistake. I haven't killed anyone. My name wasn't Katy. You can
- 24:37find my birth certificate on trial in Chicago. My father died in April death.
- 24:41My weather was blinded in an auto accident. You can check all those
- 24:44things. That's true. I'm sorry, it seemed right. I ought to
- 24:48let you stew in your own juice Joe for holding out on me, But
- 24:49I know who the Katie boy, is you do? Who is it,
- 24:52miss Vandora? I'm almost sure it's George Engels. What a news favorite report.
- 24:56I know it's from Chicago. His father is dead and so his mother,
- 25:00but she was blind. He told me about it and seemed very bitter
- 25:02he did over here, Terry telling me that he had a clue he could
- 25:06have reached the paddot just to hit him. I'm sure it's George Engele,
- 25:07he sits all the way around. Wait a minute, though, he couldn't
- 25:11kill Steve Wurtzel. He was with you, allie. No, he wasn't.
- 25:14There wasn't any reason to mention it before. But he left me at
- 25:15the bar for almost a half hour between five and five thirty, the time
- 25:18when Steve was killed, just about when Terry and I left his office.
- 25:22You sure about those things, mister Undorhm positive inspectors. Joe's giving you the
- 25:26motive, and Angle's the only one who fits it, and a better act
- 25:29fast too. He succeeded in killing both words, though, so he'll probably
- 25:32try to leave town now. You're right, I'll get a dragon that out
- 25:33immediately. Well, I'm sorry about almost pulling you in, Kirby, Come
- 25:37along with Veronica, we'd better go to Yes, Milton. I'm really very
- 25:41sorry Milton forgetting Kirby. Well, goodbye all of you. Goodbye. You
- 25:45drop in again when I have another murder. Well, Hannah, that's what
- 25:59I call a beautiful team work. And we collect the five thousand dollars reward
- 26:03that the newspaper put up for information leading to the arrest of Terry's murderer.
- 26:06Today. I'd forgotten about the reward twenty five hundred each. I don't want
- 26:10mine, though. I want to turn over to Idle O'Connor, Terry's widow.
- 26:12Okay, I guess I can be as generous as you. I'll turn
- 26:17my share over to her too. Well. Happy days, Pardoner. We'll
- 26:19die broke but happy. You're a sweetheart. Oh wait, I makes a
- 26:22couple of drinks. We'll have a toast of that. Don't rush off,
- 26:26Kirby. Yeah, the little Georgie of pal with a gun. You'll notice
- 26:30the dumb move. I was out in the kitchen, heard the whole thing.
- 26:34I hid until the cops left. I waited to kill you, Kirby
- 26:38too late, George. They know everything. Yeah, I know, I
- 26:41know. I just don't like Kirby. Cutting in when you were my girl
- 26:45for generally acting smart. Besides, one more killing won't hurt my record.
- 26:48This one's all for you and your story. Hit A homicide for Hannah,
- 26:52your rat. You didn't have to kill Terry anymore, and you have to
- 26:56kill me. But you like to kill, don't you? You're killed crazy?
- 26:59Well, I'm going to take that gun. Wait, sad back,
- 27:00Trevy s free chats. That's jiu jitsu again. He's knocked out. Call
- 27:10it a chucup. Well, my father always told me to come in handy,
- 27:12better call the police back. I will shu huh. Who'd think a
- 27:18beautiful babe like you could toss a big man clear across the room? You
