- 0:01Psalm 10 from the book of Psalms.
- 0:05Supposedly this was written as two or it's in the Bible.
- 0:10It's two different Psalms, but supposedly it was all one at one
- 0:15time. So I don't know why it was
- 0:16broken up but we will read this and 1st let's pray.
- 0:20Dear Lord, please be with us and open our minds, our ears, our
- 0:25hearts to what you have to say through the scripture.
- 0:28We ask this in Jesus name, Amen. So Psalm 10 starts out, I'm
- 0:33going to go through what I did before about every time that God
- 0:39or Lord is mentioned in here, I'm going to, I went back
- 0:45already to the original Hebrew to see what it actually said and
- 0:50this is very interesting. So first I'm just going to read
- 0:52through it and then I will go back and look at each sentence
- 0:56and go through that and do the Bible studies or the study
- 1:01Bibles question and answer. So let's start with reading it
- 1:04first. Why Lord, do you stand afar?
- 1:07Why do you hide yourself in times of trouble?
- 1:10In his arrogance the wicked man hunts down the weak who are
- 1:14caught in schemes. In the schemes he devises, he
- 1:17boasts about the cravings of his heart.
- 1:19He blesses the greedy and reviles the Lord in his pride.
- 1:24The wicked man does not seek him.
- 1:27In all his thoughts there is no room for God.
- 1:30His ways are always prosperous. Your laws are rejected by him.
- 1:36He sneers at all his enemies. He says, Nothing will ever shake
- 1:40me. He swears no one will ever do me
- 1:46harm. His mouth is full of lies and
- 1:49threats. Trouble and evil are under his
- 1:52tongue. He lies in wait near the
- 1:54villages from ambush. He murders the innocent.
- 1:59His eyes watch in secret for his victims like a lion in cover.
- 2:03He wait, He lies in wait. He lies in wait to catch the
- 2:08helpless. He catches the helpless and
- 2:11drags them off in his net. His victims are crushed, they
- 2:15collapse, they fall under his strength.
- 2:17He says to himself, God will never notice.
- 2:20He covers his face and never sees arise.
- 2:24Lord, lift up your hand. Oh God, do not forget the
- 2:27helpless. Why does the wicked man revile
- 2:31God? Why does he say to himself, He
- 2:34won't call me to account? But you, God, see the trouble of
- 2:37the afflicted. You consider their grief and
- 2:39take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to
- 2:42you. You are the helper of the
- 2:45fatherless. Break the arm of the wicked man.
- 2:48Call the evil doer to account for his wickedness that would
- 2:52not otherwise be found out. The Lord is king forever and
- 2:56ever. The nations will perish from his
- 2:59land. You, Lord, hear the desire of
- 3:02the afflicted. You encourage them, and you
- 3:05listen to their cry, defending the fatherless and the
- 3:08oppressed, so that mere earthly mortals will never again strike
- 3:14terror. And that ends Psalm 10.
- 3:18So I will read the questions and answers regarding this.
- 3:23Well, I mean, very simply this, this Psalm, I'm just going to go
- 3:26through like the different things that stood out to me in
- 3:30this and not to me, but summarize each statement.
- 3:34So David saying, where is God? The wicked are advancing, they
- 3:38have pride, they're not seeking God, they reject God's laws,
- 3:43they are confident, they lie, they create trouble, they murder
- 3:47the innocent, they're secretly waiting to capture people.
- 3:50Their victims are crushed and they think it's all hidden from
- 3:54God. But then he, David calls on God
- 3:57and he says, and he says, why do they do this?
- 4:00God sees God helps David request break the arm of the wicked man
- 4:06and then David acknowledges the Lord is king forever and ever.
- 4:11And then he also says to the Lord, you encourage them, the
- 4:15afflicted, and you listen to their cry.
- 4:19So he's again putting his trust in God.
- 4:23And I think I might want to go through here and just say some
- 4:28things first about about God and who is referenced here because
- 4:34if you want to do this for yourself, you can go to
- 4:37blueletterbible.org. You'll have to find Psalm 10 and
- 4:43then go through verse by verse and every time you see Lord or
- 4:45you see God in the NIV version, you can click on the tools
- 4:51button and then read through the text.
- 4:53It gives you the NASB translation on the side, but
- 4:56then it gives you the original Hebrew words.
- 4:59So you can verify what I'm saying here.
- 5:02I'm not making this up. So beginning, Why Lord, do you
- 5:07stand afar? So David is talking to Yehovah,
- 5:12God the Father, and then he he blesses the greedy and reviles
- 5:18the Lord. He's talking about the wicked
- 5:19man reviling the Lord Yakova. And and then here in verse 4, it
- 5:28switches. It says in his pride the wicked
- 5:30man does not seek him in all his thoughts.
- 5:33There is no room for God. But God here is plural.
- 5:39It's Elohim. So this is actually the Trinity
- 5:43and we know that Scripture is inspired by God.
- 5:46And did David have an awareness of the Trinity at that time, The
- 5:51Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit?
- 5:54I don't know. But then you know, there was
- 5:57talk about I don't know if he said do not take your spirit
- 6:01from me. I thought he did in one of his
- 6:03prayers. So he did have an understanding
- 6:07of the Holy Spirit. And then he did prophetically
- 6:10talk about Jesus death on the cross.
- 6:13But he probably didn't know what he was talking about, but just
- 6:17was inspired to write what he did.
- 6:19Because I don't see anywhere in Scripture where Dave, where
- 6:23David says that he met Yeshua or anything like that or saw him or
- 6:28anything. Maybe there's something in the
- 6:29Psalms we'll find out later, but I'm not aware of it right now.
- 6:33So, but he here, he says Elohim. So it's plural.
- 6:40And this is going to be really interesting because when we get
- 6:43a little bit later when they refer to God, it's ale El, the
- 6:47singular form of God. So this is like really cool to
- 6:51check it out in this chapter. So the wicked one has no room
- 6:56for Elohim, God in the plural sense.
- 6:59And then it says in verse 11 it says he says to himself, God ale
- 7:08El, the singular form of Elohim will never notice.
- 7:14He covers his face and never sees.
- 7:16And then David says arise yehovah.
- 7:22So he's calling on God. So he's talking about God the
- 7:25Father here. Why does the wicked man revile
- 7:29God in verse 13? God here again is plural Elohim.
- 7:36And then in verse 14 the NIV version says but you God, It
- 7:40doesn't. In the original Hebrew it
- 7:43doesn't say God anywhere, so it doesn't distinguish who he's
- 7:47talking about at that point. But then on verse 16 it says the
- 7:52Lord is king forever and ever, Yehova.
- 7:55And it says you Yehova, hear the desire of the afflicted.
- 7:59You encourage them and you listen to their cries.
- 8:03And so anyway, that was just very interesting to go through
- 8:08that. Now I'm going to go through
- 8:09questions and answers. This might actually be a shorter
- 8:12podcast. All right, verse or not verse,
- 8:16but Psalm 10. Why did the psalmist feel
- 8:19abandoned by God? There is no way of knowing the
- 8:22specific circumstances that led to the feelings expressed
- 8:25expressed in this Psalm. However, when we go through dark
- 8:29times, we can be encouraged by knowing that our experience is
- 8:32not uncommon. Even those who trust in God may
- 8:36encounter times of spiritual despair.
- 8:40Do the wicked always prosper? Some poetic statements like this
- 8:44are generalizations. Here the psalmist was expressing
- 8:47frustration with the fact that a person who does not live by a
- 8:51moral code and who has no regard for social decency or divine
- 8:55standards can often deceive or coerce others who then lose
- 9:01their valuable possessions. When sin and injustice twist the
- 9:06fabric of society, only God's final judgement for which the
- 9:11psalmist pleaded will fully restore justice.
- 9:15What was the effect of these lies and threats?
- 9:17People in the ancient world believed that verbal
- 9:20pronouncements, either positive or negative, as described here,
- 9:24had the power to either affirm or hurt people.
- 9:28They took oaths as seriously as people today take legal
- 9:32contracts. Is it OK for us to speak to God
- 9:36like the psalmist did? God invites, even encourages our
- 9:40honest appeals to Him. There is no need to sugarcoat
- 9:44our request as long as we direct our hopes and desires to Him and
- 9:49avoid talking about God behind His back as the grumblers in the
- 9:53desert did in Exodus chapter 16. Why does it sometimes seem like
- 9:58God is far away? God promised his people.
- 10:01The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all
- 10:06that I have commanded you. That's in Deuteronomy 31 verse
- 10:105. Yet sometimes God seems distance
- 10:14distant. During such times, the ever
- 10:17present God hasn't gone anywhere.
- 10:19Instead, specific obstacles we create or experience can make
- 10:25God seem far away. An obstacle is busyness.
- 10:30Our overloaded schedules can crowd out time with God and make
- 10:34it difficult to sense His presence in our lives.
- 10:38When Jesus arrived for dinner at the home of friends, Martha
- 10:43chose to busy herself with kitchen duties while her sister
- 10:48sat at the feet of Jesus and was commended for doing what was
- 10:52better. That's Luke chapter 10.
- 10:56Busyness isn't next to godliness.
- 10:59In fact, our crammed calendars can cause us to miss connecting
- 11:04with God daily. A second obstacle is quote stuff
- 11:09or possessions. In Matthew 19, Jesus urged a man
- 11:15to sell all he had and to follow him, but the man went away sad
- 11:21because he had great wealth. And that's in Matthew 19.
- 11:26Unfortunately, possessions and wealth can prevent people from
- 11:30pursuing Jesus, He warned. Where your treasure is, there
- 11:35your heart will be also in Matthew chapter 6.
- 11:39So if our hearts wander after more and more stuff, we will
- 11:44have little room for God. 1/3 obstacle is sin.
- 11:50Christians can be secure in their relationship with God
- 11:53because their sins have been forgiven through Jesus death on
- 11:56the cross. But lingering sin in our lives
- 12:00can still stand in the way of present fellowship with God.
- 12:04Fortunately, when we confess our sin, repent, and obey God, we
- 12:09will feel the Father's love and personal presence once again.
- 12:14That's according to John chapter 12.
- 12:17So things that separate us from God or when God seems far away,
- 12:22it's sounds like it's our busyness.
- 12:24I'm just going back to what we just read our busyness stuff
- 12:28that we have our possessions that, you know, detract, detract
- 12:33us, I guess, from God and then sin because sin separates us
- 12:38from God. So it's, it's these are all
- 12:40things that we can control when it seems like God has got us far
- 12:45away. So I guess we need to reflect on
- 12:47our lives. Are we being too busy to have
- 12:49time for God? Are we just trying to work so
- 12:53hard to get all this stuff that we're not spending time with
- 12:58God? And then third, are we breaking
- 13:01his laws because are we being disobedient?
- 13:04Because if obeying his laws shows love to God, then
- 13:08disobeying his laws would be the opposite of love to God, showing
- 13:12that to God. So sure, that would separate
- 13:16because God hears the prayers of the righteous.
- 13:18So if we're in the middle of sinning and we're not, we're not
- 13:21repentant of it, then we're just as good.
- 13:24In Hebrews it says something like those who keep on sinning
- 13:27can only expect the judgement of God, so they're considered evil.
- 13:32So if we are in the midst of our sin it we're no different than
- 13:36the evil doers. So what did Israelite society do
- 13:40for the fatherless and the oppressed?
- 13:42God has always commanded his people to care for the poor, the
- 13:45orphaned, and the oppressed, the Israelites, or to reflect God's
- 13:49own deep concern for the marginalized society.
- 13:53But the Israelites did not always live up to God's
- 13:55commands. The prophets of Israel
- 13:58frequently called the people to task for neglecting God's clear
- 14:02commands about caring for the underprivileged.
- 14:06That's in Amos chapter 5, verses 11 through 12.
- 14:09And that concludes chapter 10. So this one's really short.
- 14:14And next time we will we have another short Psalm coming up
- 14:1811. We'll do that one tomorrow.
