Transcript
- 0:00Jenn: Hey, everyone.
- 0:00Jenn: Welcome back to travel tip Tuesday.
- 0:04Jenn: Um, This week's advice started as a question that formulated in my brain.
- 0:11Jenn: Do you still need to inform your bank?
- 0:14Jenn: That you were traveling.
- 0:16Meggan: I think this is a wise question.
- 0:19Jenn: Let's talk about it.
- 0:20Jenn: So I remember back in the day, calling my bank to tell them that I would be traveling out of the country.
- 0:28Jenn: And then I was like, oh, I can do it in my online banking.
- 0:32Jenn: This is very convenient.
- 0:34Jenn: And then I went to do it online and they're like, you don't need to do it.
- 0:38Jenn: So I was.
- 0:39Jenn: What is this?
- 0:41Meggan: Why has this changed?
- 0:42Jenn: What is going on?
- 0:43Jenn: So I still see it advising your bank that you're traveling on a lot of travel tip lists.
- 0:50Jenn: So I decided to dive in a little bit we are both,
- 0:53Meggan: we're doing the research for you this week people.
- 0:55Jenn: Yes.
- 0:55Jenn: This week sort of.
- 0:56Jenn: We're in Nova Scotia.
- 0:57Jenn: I personally bank with Scotia bank and they do not need to be informed because of their quote unquote advanced fraud protection, whatever that is protects you, wherever you go.
- 1:09Jenn: And somehow they know that you're traveling.
- 1:12Jenn: I don't know.
- 1:13Meggan: I wonder how they, that part freaks me out.
- 1:16Meggan: Like how do you know it's me?
- 1:18Jenn: I don't know.
- 1:19Jenn: I sometimes
- 1:20Meggan: it's advanced
- 1:21Jenn: its so advanced.
- 1:22Jenn: Sometimes I buy stuff like at the airport with my credit card to be like, look I'm in the Halifax airport.
- 1:28Jenn: I don't know if they look at that.
- 1:30Meggan: What are you like Hansel and Gretel like leaving little like bread crumbs for them.
- 1:35Jenn: I dunno if that makes a difference.
- 1:37Jenn: I have no idea.
- 1:39Meggan: I love that.
- 1:40Meggan: Look at me now I'm buying a sandwich at the Halifax airport.
- 1:45Jenn: I dunno.
- 1:46Jenn: So I dove it anyway.
- 1:48Jenn: Most banks in Canada do not need to be notified anymore.
- 1:53Jenn: But they do suggest making sure that your contact information is up to date so that they can contact you.
- 1:58Jenn: If they're like what's going on?
- 2:02Jenn: Um, However, I did see that some or a lot of American banks still want slash need you to notify them of travel.
- 2:13Jenn: So keep that in mind if you're listening from the us.
- 2:16Meggan: Well I think the us banking system, I think what's pretty different.
- 2:20Meggan: There is there's tons of different even like local state banks that are not Countrywide.
- 2:27Jenn: Yeah.
- 2:27Meggan: Here, we sort of have the big five plus a few others.
- 2:30Jenn: Yeah.
- 2:30Meggan: But I think there, and they may not have, because of the smaller nature of some of the banks, they may not have the advancements.
- 2:38Jenn: Yes.
- 2:39Meggan: But logically, they might still need you to inform them cuz they just don't have like the technology to know that could be it.
- 2:46Jenn: Yeah.
- 2:46Jenn: I mean that seems fair.
- 2:48Jenn: Just a couple of other banking related type of tips.
- 2:52Jenn: If you don't have a chip debit slash credit card yet, where have you been get one of those now?
- 2:57Jenn: Yeah, it definitely makes traveling so much easier, especially in Europe.
- 3:02Jenn: It, a tap.
- 3:03Jenn: Tap is huge.
- 3:05Meggan: I love tap.
- 3:06Jenn: We love tapping.
- 3:06Jenn: And then if you don't have a credit card, a visa debit card is a thing that makes things a lot easier.
- 3:13Jenn: I also suggest finding a partner bank with your bank.
- 3:17Jenn: If you wanna,
- 3:17Meggan: I never thought of this before.
- 3:19Meggan: Tell us why you should do that.
- 3:21Jenn: Oh my God.
- 3:21Jenn: Well, you can save some money on the fees.
- 3:26Jenn: So for example, my bank Scotiabank is partnered with Barclays in the UK or the bank of America in the us.
- 3:33Jenn: So I can use their ATMs without incurring international ATM fees.
- 3:39Meggan: I didn't know that.
- 3:40Jenn: Meggan, where have you been.
- 3:43Meggan: I don't know, apparently not working at a bank.
- 3:45Jenn: Apparently get getting fees, get clear, like
- 3:48Meggan: just, just having some fees.
- 3:50Meggan: I love all of this.
- 3:52Meggan: I knew that I no longer had to inform.
- 3:54Meggan: I always felt like when I called my bank, that I was like, Calling someone to like, be like, so I'm traveling.
- 4:01Meggan: Um, Could you make a note Jim, of where I'm going?
- 4:04Meggan: um, And it always felt silly, so I, but obviously necessary, but I'm really glad we've sort of gotten, you know, more advanced with that.
- 4:13Meggan: I think all this is great.
- 4:14Meggan: I'm definitely gonna look up like literally when we hang up the partner bank thing, I think that's really cool and never thought of that.
- 4:21Meggan: So.
- 4:22Meggan: I mean, I got nothing else to add, but thanks for sharing this very useful info.
- 4:26Jenn: You've learned something, hopefully those out there listening, hopefully you've learned something due and we can all pay less bank fees at or
- 4:36Meggan: We're changing lives out here.
