- 0:01Speaker 1: Dan, you look rested. A week without baseball has done
- 0:04Speaker 1: wonders for you. You've got a glow about you. How
- 0:06Speaker 1: are you feeling?
- 0:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm great. I'm fantastic. I've slept in. I haven't
- 0:13Speaker 2: had to go to the ballpark. That will end this week. Unfortunately,
- 0:16Speaker 2: Twins fans, don't listen. I'm going to help out on
- 0:19Speaker 2: White Sox.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Covering the White Sox, yeah. We'll talk about that.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not a traitor. Yeah, I'm not a traitor.
- 0:24Speaker 2: It's T-R-A-I-T-O-R, not T-R-A-D-E-R. I'm not. Please. But, yeah, I
- 0:31Speaker 2: have to help out.
- 0:31Speaker 1: For anyone who doesn't know, Dan, who covers the Twins
- 0:34Speaker 1: for The Athletic, does not live in Minnesota. This animal
- 0:39Speaker 1: commutes to Minnesota to cover home games and then back
- 0:42Speaker 1: to Chicago. So we're going to put him to work
- 0:44Speaker 1: on the White Sox, who are game twos tonight. They
- 0:49Speaker 1: have a 1-0 lead over Cleveland in the ALBS. We'll
- 0:53Speaker 1: talk about that and all the playoffs today on Twin
- 0:56Speaker 1: Cities Territory, your Minnesota Twins podcast episode. here on the
- 1:00Speaker 1: Foul Territory Network. The most notable playoff action of the weekend,
- 1:05Speaker 1: I would say, Dan, happened in Milwaukee, where the Brewers,
- 1:11Speaker 1: who won a Major League Best 103 games during the
- 1:13Speaker 1: regular season, had two really tough games against San Diego.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Padres almost took game one against Jacob Mizorowski. Might have,
- 1:22Speaker 1: if not for a roof cable high up.
- 1:25Speaker 2: That's crazy. Yes.
- 1:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:28Speaker 1: And then game two, we're winning in the ninth inning,
- 1:30Speaker 1: had their stud closer Mason Miller out there for, was
- 1:34Speaker 1: he out there for two innings?
- 1:36Speaker 2: Yeah, he was. He asked him for a six-out save.
- 1:38Speaker 1: And it proved to be a little too much. Jackson
- 1:41Speaker 1: Churio with the electric walk-off two-run single to turn a
- 1:45Speaker 1: loss into a win. Two strikes as well, two outs.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It was really about as exciting as it gets. And
- 1:53Speaker 1: so as we were thinking about topics for today's show, Dan,
- 1:55Speaker 1: I can't help but watch this Brewers team and think
- 1:58Speaker 1: to myself, why can't the twins be like the Brewers someday? Obviously,
- 2:05Speaker 1: you have the geographic similarities. There are neighbors. You have
- 2:10Speaker 1: the market size similarities. They are not necessarily all due
- 2:15Speaker 1: respect to Milwaukee. They're not the most sexy market in
- 2:21Speaker 1: the country. They're two hours up the road. If you're
- 2:24Speaker 1: going to move to a big Midwest city, The one
- 2:27Speaker 1: you think of first is just a couple hours down
- 2:29Speaker 1: the road. There's those similarities. We started looking into it
- 2:33Speaker 1: a little bit more to see how have they done
- 2:35Speaker 1: this and just to see if the Twins can learn
- 2:38Speaker 1: anything from this team, Dan. I know the first reaction
- 2:46Speaker 1: to this from the sarcastic crowd out there, of which
- 2:49Speaker 1: I am part of it, I'm not knocking the sarcastic crowd,
- 2:51Speaker 1: is why can't the Twins be like the Brewers? Well,
- 2:55Speaker 1: the pull ads or well, because we can't have nice
- 2:57Speaker 1: things in Minnesota and sports, but, uh, it is actually
- 3:00Speaker 1: pretty eyeopening, uh, to look at how the brewers have
- 3:03Speaker 1: done this. And it is not through spending $ 700 million
- 3:07Speaker 1: on star players or anything that seems super unattainable. In fact,
- 3:12Speaker 1: we'll start with their payroll, which this year was $ 124
- 3:16Speaker 1: million on opening day, uh, which is higher than the twins,
- 3:21Speaker 1: of course, but not that much higher than And certainly
- 3:24Speaker 1: with an owner in Tom Pollad who is talking about
- 3:28Speaker 1: investing more this offseason, certainly the Brewers are showing that
- 3:33Speaker 1: it's not necessarily that you have to throw a ton
- 3:36Speaker 1: of money around. You just have to put it in
- 3:37Speaker 1: the right places at the right times.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I think that's pretty much it. I mean, it's funny.
- 3:42Speaker 2: If they were in Milwaukee or if they were in Minnesota,
- 3:46Speaker 2: the Brewers owner would be cheap Antanasio or Antanasio, however
- 3:50Speaker 2: you say Mark Antanasio's name, because they have never– really
- 3:53Speaker 2: been a payroll team. This is a team that has
- 3:56Speaker 2: basically lingered. I think their highest that they've been in
- 3:58Speaker 2: the league is 17th, and that was back in 2019.
- 4:02Speaker 2: During this run, and let's clarify that, during this run
- 4:05Speaker 2: of eight playoffs in nine years, they've been at their
- 4:10Speaker 2: highest 17th. Mostly they've been between 22 and 24 and 26.
- 4:15Speaker 2: They don't throw a lot of money at payroll. What
- 4:17Speaker 2: they do is they draft and develop players. extremely well.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And they have an identity. And I do think the
- 4:22Speaker 2: Twins are sort of getting there. And I think the
- 4:26Speaker 2: Twins have an idea of what they want to do,
- 4:29Speaker 2: which is be more athletic. And I think that's one
- 4:31Speaker 2: thing the Brewers have been outstanding at. You look at
- 4:34Speaker 2: the roster right now, they had seven guys with 10
- 4:36Speaker 2: stolen bases this year. And I'm not even saying that
- 4:39Speaker 2: stolen bases, like Luke Kieschel made a great point. Stolen
- 4:42Speaker 2: bases is not the way to say, oh, this is
- 4:44Speaker 2: a great base running team. First, third, instincts on the
- 4:47Speaker 2: bases are All that stuff really defines a team. This
- 4:51Speaker 2: is what the Brewers do. I mean, yes, they have
- 4:53Speaker 2: guys that steal bases and they take extra bases. They
- 4:57Speaker 2: push that extra 90 feet on base hits. I think
- 5:00Speaker 2: that's a huge part of it. They just find athletes.
- 5:02Speaker 2: I mean, look, but these are guys that they find
- 5:06Speaker 2: gems from other teams and bring them in and they
- 5:09Speaker 2: have a culture and an identity established and guys buy in. Look,
- 5:12Speaker 2: Jake Bowers had, how many stolen bases this year? Jake
- 5:16Speaker 2: Bowers had 11 stolen bases, not a ton. He's a
- 5:20Speaker 2: 30 year old first baseman in his three years with Milwaukee.
- 5:24Speaker 2: He has 32 stolen bases in his previous, in his
- 5:28Speaker 2: previous four years in the big leagues, he had 18
- 5:32Speaker 2: stolen bases. So, I mean, clearly Milwaukee's identified something and
- 5:37Speaker 2: they think, Hey, sure. It's good to get these guys
- 5:40Speaker 2: in here. And if they want to do it, they're
- 5:41Speaker 2: going to do it and they'll stick. And Andrew Vaughn
- 5:44Speaker 2: is another guy. It's a good example. Andrew Vaughn was
- 5:47Speaker 2: hitting like 160 with the White Sox, former third overall pick. Basically,
- 5:51Speaker 2: it was a bust with the White Sox. He's come
- 5:54Speaker 2: in and hit above 300 for one and a half
- 5:58Speaker 2: seasons with the Brewers. I think what happens is they
- 6:01Speaker 2: find great talent themselves. They have the Jackson Churrios. Look
- 6:06Speaker 2: at Yelich, what he's done for them for a decade.
- 6:08Speaker 2: And this year, he's falling off. Obviously, he's fallen off
- 6:12Speaker 2: the last couple years from what he was, where he
- 6:14Speaker 2: was an MVP player. type player for a long time.
- 6:17Speaker 2: But then they replace him with someone else that's an
- 6:19Speaker 2: MVP type. Like Jackson Trujillo right now is 22 and
- 6:22Speaker 2: looks like he's on a Hall of Fame trajectory already.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Totally.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Bryce Terang, first round pick of the Brewers in 2018.
- 6:29Speaker 2: His first two years, it took him a little while
- 6:31Speaker 2: to develop. Then he learned his strike zone. He gets
- 6:33Speaker 2: on base 36% of the time now. I mean, Bryce
- 6:36Speaker 2: Terang is a four to five win player every year.
- 6:40Speaker 2: And I think it was a baseball reference had him
- 6:41Speaker 2: as a seven win player this year. But you just
- 6:45Speaker 2: see it. They do homegrown talent. Jacob Mizorowski, what a find.
- 6:51Speaker 2: And they've done this over and over with their pitching staff.
- 6:54Speaker 2: I mean, Freddy Peralta, Corbin Burns, you just keep going
- 7:00Speaker 2: down the list. It just keeps happening. And I think
- 7:05Speaker 2: the Twins, really on the position player side, have decided
- 7:11Speaker 2: the route to go is more athletic. We see it
- 7:14Speaker 2: with Keyshaw. We see it with Walker Jenkins, Emmanuel Rodriguez.
- 7:18Speaker 2: I think they have found that that's the way they
- 7:20Speaker 2: want to go to. Um, it's going to be about
- 7:23Speaker 2: staying healthy and on the field because that's what the
- 7:25Speaker 2: Brewers players do. They, you know, yell at you. That's
- 7:28Speaker 2: slowed down. But a lot of these guys, they post
- 7:32Speaker 2: and they play 130 to 140 and they are good
- 7:34Speaker 2: and it's fun to watch.
- 7:37Speaker 1: A few notable things looking at their payroll. Obviously you
- 7:41Speaker 1: mentioned the drafting aspect, uh, it starts with that, right?
- 7:44Speaker 1: Like to be able to get players who are, to
- 7:49Speaker 1: be able to find them, draft them, and then develop
- 7:51Speaker 1: them fast enough that they can be this good when
- 7:55Speaker 1: they're still in the arbitration years of their life. I mean,
- 7:58Speaker 1: Jacob Mizorowski is making less than a million dollars this year.
- 8:03Speaker 1: What a steal of the century right there. And there's
- 8:06Speaker 1: a lot of guys like that. The twins are similar.
- 8:08Speaker 1: They have guys in those early stages of their careers
- 8:11Speaker 1: who are uh, affordable and showing promise just not to
- 8:16Speaker 1: the level that the, that the Brewers stars are at
- 8:18Speaker 1: at this point anyway. Um, they also, uh, the other
- 8:24Speaker 1: thing they've done that's, that's been so brilliant for them, uh,
- 8:28Speaker 1: is scout the international pool and hit a couple home
- 8:31Speaker 1: runs there too. Uh, that's how they found Churrio. That's
- 8:34Speaker 1: how they found Luis Lara. Uh, And with both of
- 8:37Speaker 1: those guys, they signed them long-term before they'd ever played
- 8:41Speaker 1: a major league game. The Churrio deal made news a
- 8:43Speaker 1: few years ago because it was the biggest deal ever
- 8:45Speaker 1: handed out at the time, maybe still is, I don't know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: to a player who had never played an MLB game.
- 8:50Speaker 1: He got $ 82 million in, I think, eight years. So
- 8:53Speaker 1: he's still relatively cheap now, and it's going to get
- 8:57Speaker 1: even better, really, for the Brewers as it goes. And obviously, Dan,
- 9:01Speaker 1: it's a huge risk to do that. You don't know
- 9:03Speaker 1: how they're going to turn out. But if you hit
- 9:06Speaker 1: you look so smart. You have, you know, the player
- 9:08Speaker 1: hasn't sent them to do it because they get guaranteed
- 9:10Speaker 1: money before they've ever even had to prove themselves in
- 9:12Speaker 1: the big leagues. The team loves it because they're going
- 9:15Speaker 1: to pay less money for these prime years than they
- 9:17Speaker 1: would if they waited until free agency to spend the money.
- 9:21Speaker 1: And then like, also you just like, you, you show
- 9:24Speaker 1: that faith in the player. You take that pressure off
- 9:26Speaker 1: him of having to go out there and perform every
- 9:28Speaker 1: single day. And in, it's certainly in trio's case and
- 9:31Speaker 1: Laura obviously is still early yet, but looks like a,
- 9:35Speaker 1: He was a terror out there in right field when
- 9:36Speaker 1: the Twins were playing. That's for sure. It's a great move, maybe,
- 9:42Speaker 1: to think about locking up some of these guys that
- 9:44Speaker 1: you believe in early on.
- 9:48Speaker 2: If you ever needed your faith rewarded in one of
- 9:52Speaker 2: those contracts more, did Jack Centurio not provide it yesterday
- 9:56Speaker 2: with not just the bat and not the hit? but
- 10:00Speaker 2: when he fouled off the 104 and then sniffed the
- 10:03Speaker 2: bat to smell the burn of a Hall of Fame move, man.
- 10:09Speaker 2: That guy is an absolute stud. And yeah, you do
- 10:12Speaker 2: take a risk by locking these guys up, but you
- 10:14Speaker 2: also are stating your belief in your own system to
- 10:19Speaker 2: identify that talent and then develop it properly into the
- 10:23Speaker 2: kind of player you want. And we saw a lot
- 10:26Speaker 2: of Jackson Trio right at the start of his career
- 10:29Speaker 2: in 2024. And it was just evident right away that
- 10:31Speaker 2: this guy was going to be a guy. I mean,
- 10:34Speaker 2: he just, he carries himself that way. He's got power.
- 10:36Speaker 2: He's got speed. He's a great defender. He's 100% robbed
- 10:41Speaker 2: Royce Lewis of a, of a potential go ahead home
- 10:45Speaker 2: run in Milwaukee in his rookie year. He was, he's just,
- 10:49Speaker 2: an incredible all-around player. And yeah, of course, there's taking
- 10:55Speaker 2: the risk. But when it's eight years and $ 82 million,
- 11:00Speaker 2: especially at that point, I mean, you should be paying
- 11:03Speaker 2: guys $ 10, $ 12 million at that point in their careers.
- 11:07Speaker 2: And that is such a low amount in Major League Baseball.
- 11:12Speaker 2: The way they do it, because they have so much
- 11:14Speaker 2: homegrown talent, a $ 10 million miss that might be one
- 11:17Speaker 2: of their highest paid players, right? The $ 10 million guy,
- 11:20Speaker 2: but also they have so many affordable guys that they
- 11:23Speaker 2: can have more of those and where the twins need
- 11:26Speaker 2: to get to that point. They need a bunch of
- 11:28Speaker 2: homegrown talent, which I think they're doing a good job
- 11:30Speaker 2: of right now. You look around that infield, you look,
- 11:34Speaker 2: there's a lot of guys that are going to count
- 11:35Speaker 2: on next year that are homegrown. They need more and more.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I mean, everywhere throughout that Brewers lineup is someone that's
- 11:42Speaker 2: from home. It's Churio. It's Laura. It's Terang, Cooper Pratt,
- 11:49Speaker 2: David Hamilton, Garrett Mitchell, I think Freelick is. All those
- 11:53Speaker 2: guys are homegrown and they're playing prominent roles. And when
- 11:57Speaker 2: they're affordable and playing big roles and making $ 800, 000 and
- 12:01Speaker 2: doing that or a million bucks, you can take risks
- 12:05Speaker 2: on the guys like Churio and Laura and say, hey,
- 12:11Speaker 2: we can give these guys bigger money. to keep them
- 12:13Speaker 2: around and happy long term and get the first couple
- 12:16Speaker 2: of years of free agency and then start over again.
- 12:19Speaker 2: That's something they've always done. Josh Hader was their guy
- 12:23Speaker 2: and it was a big deal when they had to
- 12:24Speaker 2: trade Josh Hader because Josh Hader was going to get paid.
- 12:27Speaker 2: What'd they do? They got Devin Williams. Devin Williams filled
- 12:29Speaker 2: in for a couple of years and he had that
- 12:31Speaker 2: dugout incident when like some, like, like I think he
- 12:34Speaker 2: punched a wall or something like that and maybe missed
- 12:37Speaker 2: some games. But they got two great years out of him.
- 12:41Speaker 2: And what'd they do? They got, Trevor McGill who the
- 12:43Speaker 2: twins actually put back into shape. They, they worked him
- 12:48Speaker 2: into shape. It's, it's crazy that the brewers are getting
- 12:51Speaker 2: the twins development because Trevor McGill learned how to pitch
- 12:55Speaker 2: again with the twins and has taken off. But that's,
- 12:58Speaker 2: that's the key is just finding replacements and moving on.
- 13:04Speaker 2: It's tough, right? Like you, we always hear that, right?
- 13:08Speaker 2: Twins fans are like, I hate that my team's a triple-A,
- 13:11Speaker 2: is a farm team for the Yankees, that kind of stuff.
- 13:14Speaker 2: But the Brewers, I mean, eight times in nine years
- 13:18Speaker 2: they've made the playoffs. I don't think they're really a
- 13:20Speaker 2: farm team.
- 13:20Speaker 1: But, and it's not even really a risk. I mean,
- 13:25Speaker 1: Torrio making $ 7 million this year, eight next year, nine
- 13:29Speaker 1: the year after that. Like, the Twins are going to
- 13:32Speaker 1: have to pay Dean Kramer like that amount of money
- 13:34Speaker 1: next year in arbitration.
- 13:35Speaker 2: Right.
- 13:37Speaker 1: So yes, obviously production could drop off. You get injured,
- 13:40Speaker 1: all that stuff. But like compared to going out and
- 13:42Speaker 1: signing a guy like him when he's just a bonafide
- 13:44Speaker 1: free agent, you're going to pay double that at least
- 13:47Speaker 1: for these people. Even at the, even at the tail
- 13:49Speaker 1: end of this deal, 2031, he's going to be what?
- 13:52Speaker 1: He's still in his twenties and 17 million a year.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Like maybe by then you're kind of regretting it, but
- 13:59Speaker 1: like you're certainly wishing you didn't have to pay Christian
- 14:02Speaker 1: Yellich 26 million this year, but, they are and they're
- 14:06Speaker 1: still playing him every day and are the best team
- 14:08Speaker 1: in baseball. So like, yes, you, you can afford to
- 14:11Speaker 1: absorb a little bit and 17 million in 2031 looks
- 14:15Speaker 1: a lot better than 26 million today for sure. Yeah.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Like you look at it, like Byron Buxton at seven
- 14:22Speaker 2: and a hundred and they did that at the right time.
- 14:24Speaker 2: And it was like the contract with escalators. And I
- 14:27Speaker 2: liked how they did that contract. And that was, they
- 14:29Speaker 2: didn't even do that at the start of Byron Buxton's career.
- 14:31Speaker 2: They did that for more of his productive years. Um, but,
- 14:35Speaker 2: 15 million a year right now for Byron Buxton with
- 14:38Speaker 2: the potential of it going to 25, if he wins
- 14:40Speaker 2: MVP is a steal.
- 14:41Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Right.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Like, like, so there, there is, there are times where
- 14:46Speaker 2: these contracts work out great for teams and they've identified
- 14:49Speaker 2: some guys. And I, I don't think that the twins
- 14:52Speaker 2: will be able to do this with Walker Jenkins. Cause
- 14:54Speaker 2: I don't think Scott Boris likes giving up those first
- 14:56Speaker 2: year or two of, of a free agency. Like that's
- 14:59Speaker 2: just something that, you don't always see his guys doing,
- 15:03Speaker 2: I mean, it's not saying it can't happen. And of
- 15:05Speaker 2: course you approach them, but you know, that would be
- 15:09Speaker 2: ideal for the twins to do this with Jenkins, with Keyshaw, with,
- 15:13Speaker 2: you know, Culpepper, guys like that. Yeah, absolutely. It would,
- 15:17Speaker 2: it would make sense and lock them up and get
- 15:20Speaker 2: the twins did it a couple of years in with
- 15:23Speaker 2: Kepler and Polanco. And they got great value. All those
- 15:25Speaker 2: guys in the last couple of years where they could
- 15:27Speaker 2: have been free agents, both of them were making like
- 15:29Speaker 2: 10 million bucks and, And even though Kepler never broke
- 15:32Speaker 2: through and hit, he was worth defensively that $ 10 million. So,
- 15:38Speaker 2: you know, find talent, identify it, get going. And let's
- 15:43Speaker 2: help the Brewers do this because this is good for
- 15:46Speaker 2: baseball to see a team like them in the Rays.
- 15:49Speaker 2: I don't need to.
- 15:50Speaker 1: See them win the World Series. That's what you're getting at.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I don't think any of us need to see that. No, no, no.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I mean, well, I wouldn't hate it. I just, I
- 15:59Speaker 2: hate the Dodgers, so. I've always hated the Dodgers.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Fair point. Quick break. We'll be right back with more
- 16:04Speaker 1: on this here on Twin Cities Territory.
- 16:09Speaker 4: The 2026 MLB playoffs are here. And guess what? SeatGeek
- 16:14Speaker 4: has you covered.
- 16:15Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 16:15Speaker 4: If you're looking to go to a playoff game, which

- 16:28Speaker 4: that means no. Guess what? There's some big teams going. Kratzy,
- 16:31Speaker 4: tell us about it.
- 16:33Speaker 1: I'm definitely going to a Brewers game. There's no bad
- 16:35Speaker 1: seats in Milwaukee because the stadium is right on top
- 16:39Speaker 1: of the field. It feels like you're in the grass.
- 16:43Speaker 2: And you know what?

- 17:21Speaker 1: super easy. Appreciate everybody listening as always. I should have
- 17:25Speaker 1: mentioned the top. Tyler is just off today. He's golfing.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Big college alumni golf tournament or something down there in Houston.
- 17:33Speaker 1: So just Dan and I today. He will be back
- 17:36Speaker 1: on Thursday. We're going to have a mailbag show on Thursday.
- 17:38Speaker 1: More on that at the end. But please send us

- 17:53Speaker 1: The other note on Shurio, the most expensive he's going
- 17:56Speaker 1: to get for the Brewers is $ 17. 0.25 million in 2031,
- 18:00Speaker 1: unless they pick up their team options the next two seasons.
- 18:04Speaker 1: They have team options for the next two years for
- 18:05Speaker 1: 25 million, which obviously if he's an MVP candidate still,
- 18:11Speaker 1: they will do that and keep him. And if not,
- 18:14Speaker 1: then they're off the hook without really paying him anything
- 18:18Speaker 1: close to it.
- 18:19Speaker 2: And you know what's a great part about already having
- 18:21Speaker 2: this in places? If you've determined that this guy is
- 18:24Speaker 2: the guy you want to build around forever, you And
- 18:27Speaker 2: if his body keeps aging the way that you hope
- 18:30Speaker 2: it does, you can tear that contract up midway.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Yeah, true.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Because he's already got the loyalty. He's already like, I
- 18:38Speaker 2: love this place. And, you know, was that not electric yesterday,
- 18:44Speaker 2: how loud it was when he got the hit? I mean,
- 18:48Speaker 2: so my first stop as a baseball writer was San Diego.
- 18:53Speaker 2: And a lot of my friends are Padre fans. And
- 18:55Speaker 2: that's the bulk of my fantasy football league. And that
- 19:00Speaker 2: chat thread just was dead silent. And I didn't mess
- 19:03Speaker 2: with them. Especially given the way that Saturday went. You
- 19:08Speaker 2: think you have the home run from Ty France. What
- 19:12Speaker 2: a great moment for Ty France. Taken away. I know
- 19:17Speaker 2: StatCast is trying to say that It wasn't going to
- 19:21Speaker 2: be a home run. It was going to be really
- 19:23Speaker 2: damn close. Maybe it would go foul. I don't know. But, man,
- 19:28Speaker 2: to have that happen and then to have your closer,
- 19:30Speaker 2: you know, what a great plate appearance by Gary Sanchez.
- 19:35Speaker 2: I guess maybe Mason Miller was pitch tipping because I
- 19:40Speaker 2: saw some glove views. Yeah, it showed like his hand
- 19:44Speaker 2: was more out of the glove in the set when
- 19:47Speaker 2: he was either throwing his fastball or slider or his
- 19:51Speaker 2: off speed. And his hand was fully in the glove
- 19:53Speaker 2: with the off speed. One or the other. I can't remember.
- 19:56Speaker 2: I saw the images and it was to two different batters.
- 19:59Speaker 2: And so I'm going to guess that they knew what
- 20:01Speaker 2: was coming, when it was coming. But I mean, how
- 20:05Speaker 2: did Churio hit 104 and foul it off? dotted on
- 20:09Speaker 2: the outside and down. That was such a nasty pitch.
- 20:12Speaker 2: And he, he just, I mean, that was such an
- 20:15Speaker 2: incredible bat. And that crowd was just ridiculously loud. I mean,
- 20:19Speaker 2: I guess if, if I was a Packers fan, I'd
- 20:21Speaker 2: be pouring all my energy into the brewers right now too.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So it's yeah, but.
- 20:29Speaker 1: Not good there. Yeah.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 1: And like, You notice what we haven't said because it
- 20:36Speaker 1: doesn't exist on their team. There's no big, juicy free
- 20:39Speaker 1: agent signing. They gave Christian Jelic his money, but obviously
- 20:43Speaker 1: he was homegrown too. I think the loyalty point is
- 20:49Speaker 1: spot on. Trying to convince Jackson Churio to come to
- 20:53Speaker 1: your small market team when he made his name elsewhere,
- 20:57Speaker 1: that's going to be tough to do. If you make
- 21:00Speaker 1: him yourself, then you can sign into that deal before
- 21:03Speaker 1: anyone else even gets a chance to and build that,
- 21:06Speaker 1: build that loyalty and the familiarity with the market and
- 21:09Speaker 1: the area and just turning it into, into home for
- 21:12Speaker 1: a player. But the last thing I'll say, uh, the
- 21:18Speaker 1: payroll is $ 124 million, but 26 million of that is,
- 21:22Speaker 1: is Yelich. Like we mentioned who he's, um, he's DH
- 21:25Speaker 1: the entire season and he's, you know, basically a replacement
- 21:29Speaker 1: level DH at this point, obviously, uh, a franchise legend
- 21:33Speaker 1: and still out there in the postseason lineup. It's not
- 21:37Speaker 1: like he's not contributing. Brandon Woodruff, $ 22 million. He's been
- 21:42Speaker 1: hurt most of the year and isn't playing. And they
- 21:45Speaker 1: also have $ 2. 5 million in dead money to Lance McCullers,
- 21:47Speaker 1: who they traded for and then cut. That's $ 50 million
- 21:50Speaker 1: of that $ 124 million. That's not doing a whole lot
- 21:54Speaker 1: for you. And we just heard the guy done talking
- 21:57Speaker 1: about how the Twins aren't spending enough with about $ 70,
- 21:59Speaker 1: $ 80 million worth of players on the field So it's
- 22:03Speaker 1: not just that. It is the development and it is
- 22:07Speaker 1: the securing of talent at the right time too.
- 22:10Speaker 2: It is. Here are the Brewers during the nine years.
- 22:14Speaker 2: And even in that ninth year that they didn't make
- 22:16Speaker 2: the playoffs, they still finished 86 and 76. So they've
- 22:19Speaker 2: had a winning record for nine straight years. The payroll
- 22:22Speaker 2: starting in 2018, 90 million. 2019, 122 million. 2020 obviously
- 22:23Speaker 2: is a smaller amount because of the 60 game season,
- 22:31Speaker 2: but there were 39 million. They went up to 99 million,
- 22:35Speaker 2: 131 million, one 18, one Oh four, one Oh eight.
- 22:39Speaker 2: And then one 24 this year. I mean, like they
- 22:42Speaker 2: are doing this because it's homegrown. So just identify, nail
- 22:48Speaker 2: the draft, identify guys that fit a mold. And I
- 22:53Speaker 2: do think the twins are going that way. I do
- 22:54Speaker 2: think they're looking more athletic. Like Von Lackey is not
- 22:58Speaker 2: this big, uh, I heard a Craig Biggio kind of
- 23:05Speaker 2: comparison as far as body type, like a catcher who
- 23:09Speaker 2: can run. That doesn't happen. And that's who they took
- 23:12Speaker 2: third overall. And he's got pop, tremendous pop, and a
- 23:16Speaker 2: great arm. And so maybe that's the way is the
- 23:23Speaker 2: athletic guys because, man, it looked a heck of a
- 23:26Speaker 2: lot better for the twins when Walker Jenkins, when Kalen
- 23:29Speaker 2: Culpepper Emmanuel Rodriguez was plus four defensive runs saved in
- 23:34Speaker 2: left field in 75 innings after we watched guys butchering
- 23:39Speaker 2: the ball in the corners all year. So, like, I mean,
- 23:43Speaker 2: it's clear. The Brewers have to stand off this.
- 23:46Speaker 1: It could be the start.
- 23:47Speaker 2: It could be. It could.
- 23:48Speaker 1: We'll see.
- 23:50Speaker 2: And I think that's what they were talking about, the
- 23:52Speaker 2: culture and identity they wanted to identify. Luke Keyshaw embodies
- 23:56Speaker 2: it with his base run in. I don't know if
- 23:58Speaker 2: there's a more exciting player on the Twins than watching
- 24:01Speaker 2: Luke Keishaw run bases.
- 24:04Speaker 1: Well, we'll see. Time will tell, as they say. We
- 24:09Speaker 1: always do this. We always spend more time on topics
- 24:11Speaker 1: than I anticipate.
- 24:12Speaker 2: So we're going to resume to the rest of this rundown.
- 24:15Speaker 3: That's okay, because that was the good one. That's the
- 24:17Speaker 3: one that was actually relevant. That's about the Twins? Nothing
- 24:21Speaker 3: else on here?
- 24:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Quickly, around the league, I think we covered the Brewers–
- 24:27Speaker 1: Plenty in this one. But the White Sox, they had
- 24:31Speaker 1: us right where they wanted us all along. The late
- 24:34Speaker 1: season swoon to lose the AL Central. And now here
- 24:38Speaker 1: they are 3-0 so far in the playoffs. They take
- 24:41Speaker 1: a 1-0 lead into Game 2 in Cleveland tonight. And
- 24:44Speaker 1: then also tonight, Tampa and the Yankees Game 2 after
- 24:46Speaker 1: the Yankees. Almost got no hit, Dan. Thoughts on the
- 24:49Speaker 1: ALDS so far?
- 24:52Speaker 2: Guy that we both love and both know well. in
- 24:56Speaker 2: Will Venable. That's so crazy. I've known Will since he
- 25:01Speaker 2: was 12. I covered him with the Padres. Later on,
- 25:05Speaker 2: I covered him in high school. He grew up in
- 25:07Speaker 2: a neighboring town and family friends. I met him when
- 25:11Speaker 2: he was 12, I should say. I was like 15.
- 25:16Speaker 2: Throughout the years, I just had weird crossovers with him.
- 25:20Speaker 2: Zach was at college with him. What did you do?
- 25:24Speaker 2: You were playing for basketball i.
- 25:28Speaker 1: I did play-by-play of basketball games and i was also
- 25:33Speaker 1: the baseball stadium pa announcer and he played obviously played
- 25:37Speaker 1: baseball he didn't at first though he was just there
- 25:39Speaker 1: for basketball right and then and then just decided to
- 25:42Speaker 1: be the best player in the baseball team too and
- 25:44Speaker 1: had a major league yeah.
- 25:46Speaker 2: I mean your dad's a major leaguer like you got
- 25:49Speaker 2: a chance of doing this but uh but so will
- 25:51Speaker 2: venable pushing the right buttons grant taylor going four You know,
- 25:55Speaker 2: that was insane to see a guy that throws two
- 25:59Speaker 2: innings go four to close out that game. And Murakami
- 26:04Speaker 2: is like, you know, when it kind of reminds me
- 26:08Speaker 2: of the way that Schwarber burst onto the scene back
- 26:12Speaker 2: in 15. And as one of my friends, Tony Andraki,
- 26:15Speaker 2: who covered the Cubs forever, says he was America's favorite
- 26:19Speaker 2: adult son of Kyle Schwarber. Murakami um might be my
- 26:27Speaker 2: favorite uh adult son right now that guy is like
- 26:29Speaker 2: hilarious like his he is a character and he just
- 26:33Speaker 2: crushed that ball there today yeah uh what a like
- 26:37Speaker 2: everything's changed there three straight 100 lost seasons and yeah
- 26:41Speaker 2: here they are looking to come back to chicago up.
- 26:45Speaker 1: 20 and you'll be covering them starting with game three.
- 26:48Speaker 2: Right yeah yeah and then on the uh On the
- 26:52Speaker 2: Rays and Yankees, man, Drew Rasmussen was just electric there.
- 26:58Speaker 2: I mean, it's not like the Yankees pitched poorly in
- 27:01Speaker 2: that game either. No. One-nothing game.
- 27:04Speaker 1: Yeah. The one hit they got, Austin Wells got thrown
- 27:08Speaker 1: out trying to stretch it.
- 27:10Speaker 3: I know.
- 27:12Speaker 1: Wild game.
- 27:12Speaker 2: Look, you can say you don't need to see the
- 27:15Speaker 2: Brewers and the Rays in the World Series, but I
- 27:18Speaker 2: would love to see the Brewers and the Rays in
- 27:19Speaker 2: the World Series. These are franchises that have done this
- 27:21Speaker 2: for so long. The fact that the Brewers have never
- 27:24Speaker 2: won a World Series is just astounding to me. And
- 27:28Speaker 2: the Rays have been there, but they've never won. And
- 27:31Speaker 2: it's been twice in the last 10 years, or maybe
- 27:34Speaker 2: it's been twice in the last 15 years.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I want one of them. I have no problem with
- 27:39Speaker 1: the Rays. You can't ask me to root for anything Wisconsin-related.
- 27:43Speaker 2: Yeah, okay. That's fair. I get that. I do get that.
- 27:45Speaker 2: But if you had to choose between the Dodgers and Wisconsin,
- 27:49Speaker 2: would you really choose the Dodgers?
- 27:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 27:54Speaker 4: Sorry.
- 27:55Speaker 2: I respect that. I respect the passion there.
- 28:00Speaker 1: I actually would probably– I would rather see the Dodgers
- 28:03Speaker 1: than even the Braves. I'm still harboring ill will for
- 28:08Speaker 1: 35 years later, which we'll get to in a minute.
- 28:12Speaker 1: Speaking of the Braves, they tied their series of the
- 28:16Speaker 1: Dodgers yesterday 1-1. Ray Kerr. Who is this guy? Clutch
- 28:21Speaker 1: in the clincher in the wildcard round. Clutch last night.
- 28:23Speaker 1: He missed all of last season due to injury. He's
- 28:26Speaker 1: pitched nine games total for the Braves this year, but
- 28:29Speaker 1: two of the biggest ones. And the Braves are in
- 28:32Speaker 1: business against the Dodgers.
- 28:34Speaker 2: I'm not going to lie. Until he pitched the other day,
- 28:37Speaker 2: not yesterday, but the other day, I'd never heard of
- 28:40Speaker 2: Ray Kirk. And this happens, right? Other league. I mean,
- 28:43Speaker 2: we're talking about a guy with like 50 games in
- 28:45Speaker 2: his major league career. And he's 32, right? 31.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Well, maybe he's turning 32 by now.
- 28:51Speaker 2: He has. But yeah, he has. He is from Sacramento.
- 28:53Speaker 2: So he's got that going for him. California guy. 29
- 28:56Speaker 2: games for the Padres across 2022 and 23.
- 28:58Speaker 1: 10 games for the Braves in 24. Missed all last year.
- 29:05Speaker 3: And just uh absolutely bailed out walt weiss bailed out
- 29:10Speaker 3: walt weiss because everybody in baseball is going why did
- 29:14Speaker 3: you need chris sale with the four run lead i
- 29:16Speaker 3: do get it you gotta close out that series and
- 29:18Speaker 3: win it and.
- 29:18Speaker 2: I do get that i do but like then you
- 29:21Speaker 2: take chris sale out of pitching game two in dodger
- 29:24Speaker 2: stadium and it was like is he gonna go is
- 29:26Speaker 2: he gonna go and They decided no, and now he's
- 29:29Speaker 2: going to pitch on six days at home. Walt Weiss
- 29:32Speaker 2: looks like a genius now because Ray Kerr and the
- 29:36Speaker 2: group came through, but the offense was huge and got
- 29:38Speaker 2: them enough, and the pitching kept that I mean Didier
- 29:42Speaker 2: Fuentes who is just turning into a star and he
- 29:47Speaker 2: couldn't get the four out the four inning out either
- 29:51Speaker 2: he gave up the home run the ninth but he
- 29:54Speaker 2: got 10 outs or he got 11 outs and came
- 29:56Speaker 2: up one shot and they had to go to the
- 29:59Speaker 2: closer okay, that's fine. That was amazing. They're pitching, you know,
- 30:03Speaker 2: when you have Rizal Iglesias coming out of the bullpen,
- 30:07Speaker 2: you feel pretty good. And now you have Chris Sale
- 30:09Speaker 2: in game three looking to go up 2-1. So that's
- 30:12Speaker 2: a very interesting series.
- 30:16Speaker 1: They resume tomorrow night. Game three is in the National
- 30:18Speaker 1: League on Tuesday. All right. Another great weekend of football.
- 30:24Speaker 3: P.J.
- 30:25Speaker 1: Fleck and the Gophers win the jug.
- 30:27Speaker 2: That was cool.
- 30:28Speaker 1: So cool.
- 30:28Speaker 2: You were hyped.
- 30:30Speaker 1: Like the fourth time in my life. Uh, and the
- 30:33Speaker 1: first time they've ever done.
- 30:34Speaker 2: It at home in my life. Yeah. Yeah. I did that.
- 30:38Speaker 2: I was a couple months old when that happened. Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: When they were, yeah. Um, that was awesome.
- 30:44Speaker 1: Like, you know, they, they had a terrible game against
- 30:47Speaker 1: Mississippi state a few weeks ago. And it's like, the
- 30:51Speaker 1: questions were, is it time to move on from Fleck
- 30:54Speaker 1: and whatever? Like, man, it, He just feels like the
- 30:58Speaker 1: right guy in the right place to me. Yeah. I
- 31:02Speaker 1: don't know that the act would work as well at
- 31:06Speaker 1: the Ohio States and Alabamas of the world, but the
- 31:10Speaker 1: team needs something to make it stand out in this crowded,
- 31:13Speaker 1: crowded college football landscape. They're always also ran in the
- 31:17Speaker 1: Big Ten, but he makes those moments happen sometimes very bizarrely.
- 31:23Speaker 2: Yeah. He does. No, I remember when you mentioned it
- 31:27Speaker 2: the other day that you covered him a little bit
- 31:31Speaker 2: during that run, and I covered him a little bit
- 31:33Speaker 2: during that run. You sent me to that Northwestern game. Oh, yeah.
- 31:35Speaker 2: That's right. And I remember going to the post-game press conference,
- 31:39Speaker 2: and it was an inspiring press conference. And then you
- 31:45Speaker 2: get to the end of it, and it's sort of
- 31:46Speaker 2: like the Aflac duck. Like, what did he just say?
- 31:51Speaker 2: Was there a usable quote in there? anywhere or was
- 31:54Speaker 2: it all cliches rowing the boat all that stuff it
- 31:58Speaker 2: it is um it is inspiring i get how it
- 32:02Speaker 2: works and there was not a not a single usable
- 32:05Speaker 2: quote uh from a victory that was important to them
- 32:09Speaker 2: at the time and i was like yeah this is
- 32:11Speaker 2: impossible i don't know how i don't know how people
- 32:13Speaker 2: write this.
- 32:13Speaker 1: But it's fun to watch anyway that's that's what you
- 32:16Speaker 1: do just use the quotes just.
- 32:18Speaker 2: Pretend but it was it was entertaining yeah.
- 32:21Speaker 1: Yeah This segment's supposed to be about the NFL, though,
- 32:24Speaker 1: because Tyler's not here, so we don't have to listen
- 32:27Speaker 1: to any of his crap. But it's time to talk
- 32:31Speaker 1: 49ers and Vikings. Dan's a 49ers fan. I'm a Vikings fan.
- 32:34Speaker 1: They're both 4-0. Who you got, Dan? Who's better?
- 32:39Speaker 2: I mean, okay, we'll get a pretty good idea about this.
- 32:42Speaker 2: What week is that? November 22nd, if the 49ers are
- 32:47Speaker 2: still healthy. And that'll be a heck of a matchup.
- 32:50Speaker 2: The substation doesn't get you. Yeah, Brian Flores gives Kyle
- 32:55Speaker 2: Shanahan fits. And if there's one team that can mess
- 32:58Speaker 2: with him. Now, what team will have a better record
- 33:01Speaker 2: at that point if both teams are healthy? I think
- 33:04Speaker 2: the 49ers 100%. Brock Purdy is playing like an MVP.
- 33:07Speaker 1: You don't fear the Vikings offense?
- 33:09Speaker 2: Come on. Man, that's a heck of an offense. That
- 33:15Speaker 2: intimidating Dolphins defense coming in 32nd in defense, I believe.
- 33:21Speaker 2: Was it 22 yesterday? Did you guys get 22?
- 33:25Speaker 1: No, we opted not to take 22 points. TJ Hawkinson
- 33:29Speaker 1: sat on the ball.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Was it 15? Did they win 15-10?
- 33:32Speaker 1: 15-10.
- 33:32Speaker 2: So they got five field goals against the least intimidating
- 33:36Speaker 2: defense in football, the team that is tanking.
- 33:39Speaker 1: But could have had a touchdown, Dan. Could have had
- 33:41Speaker 1: a touchdown. Opted not to because … I like that.
- 33:45Speaker 1: It was a smart strategic play. It also cost a
- 33:48Speaker 1: lot of betters. some money or won them some money.
- 33:50Speaker 1: Cause I, I don't, the Vikings were 10 point favorites
- 33:55Speaker 1: before the game. And I should have said something because
- 33:57Speaker 1: now it just sounds like obvious hindsight, but like how,
- 34:00Speaker 1: how can a team that can't score be a 10
- 34:01Speaker 1: point favorite against anybody?
- 34:04Speaker 2: But, but the defense, I will say that defense is electric.
- 34:08Speaker 2: That defense is just, and, and the Niners offense is
- 34:13Speaker 2: just unbelievable. I mean, they had a terrible day yesterday and, and, uh, critical.
- 34:19Speaker 2: It looked like the Broncos might be coming back again.
- 34:22Speaker 2: The Broncos are the cardiac kids under Bo Nix, and
- 34:25Speaker 2: he's so good in the fourth quarter, and they had
- 34:27Speaker 2: just beaten the Rams the same way the week before.
- 34:29Speaker 2: And then Purdy just pulls out the, hey, let's throw
- 34:32Speaker 2: it to George Kittle in space. And Kittle, who's coming
- 34:34Speaker 2: back from an Achilles, had a 19.84 miles per hour
- 34:39Speaker 2: run down the middle of the field, burning every safety
- 34:42Speaker 2: and cornerback for a 56-yard put-away touchdown. And I was like, yeah,
- 34:47Speaker 2: that's a Hall of Famer right there. And it's Mike
- 34:49Speaker 2: Evans looks amazing in this offense. McCaffrey has been very
- 34:54Speaker 2: good but not stellar so far. And Purdy's just making
- 34:58Speaker 2: great decisions. But the defense the last couple weeks has been–
- 35:01Speaker 2: or the defense yesterday was really stepped up. I think
- 35:04Speaker 2: Dre Greenlaw was– there's some good highlights of him going
- 35:07Speaker 2: at Sean Payton yesterday because Sean Payton cut him in
- 35:11Speaker 2: March without so much as a phone call. Made like
- 35:14Speaker 2: the HR person or– no, no, told the agent, And
- 35:17Speaker 2: the agent had to let Dre Greenlaw know that he
- 35:20Speaker 2: was cut. And he went up and he was all
- 35:23Speaker 2: over Sean Payton. During the game, there was a tackle
- 35:26Speaker 2: early on. And then at midfield, as they were coming
- 35:29Speaker 2: off the field, Payton pushed him away. So, I don't know.
- 35:34Speaker 2: The Niners, I'm pretty fired up about.
- 35:36Speaker 1: As I tweeted yesterday, we're going to find out if
- 35:41Speaker 1: it's possible to win a Super Bowl with defense, field goals,
- 35:43Speaker 1: and a really good kick returner. Because that's pretty much all...
- 35:47Speaker 1: All the Vikings have right now. That game, by the way,
- 35:50Speaker 1: against the Niners is in Mexico City.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Home game for the Niners, baby.
- 35:54Speaker 1: All things could happen in that one.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Home game for the Niners. John Feliciano. There are more
- 35:59Speaker 2: John Feliciano jerseys. He's retired, but he played for the
- 36:02Speaker 2: Niners until 2025. I think he was mostly practice squad.
- 36:06Speaker 2: But Mexico City, Niners played there three years ago. It
- 36:08Speaker 2: was a home game then. It's going to be a
- 36:09Speaker 2: home game now. Thank goodness because they can't win in Minneapolis.
- 36:14Speaker 2: It's been 1991 since they won in Minneapolis. 1991.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Keep us away from the substation. I'll take that. Don't
- 36:22Speaker 1: need that. Quickly, last couple things. It is October, and
- 36:29Speaker 1: 35 years ago was the 1991 season with the last
- 36:33Speaker 1: Twins World Series. Thought it would be fun throughout this
- 36:35Speaker 1: month to just kind of check in on that team.
- 36:37Speaker 1: On this day, Dan, October 5th, 1991, It was the
- 36:41Speaker 1: final regular season win for the Twins, second to last game.
- 36:45Speaker 1: And I did not remember this, but they played host
- 36:48Speaker 1: to Toronto in the final series of the season, who,
- 36:51Speaker 1: of course, was their opponent in the ALCS a few
- 36:54Speaker 1: days later. So a little double dose of Toronto. But
- 36:57Speaker 1: it was Scott Erickson got the win, his 20th, which
- 37:00Speaker 1: tied for the league lead for the season with Tom Glavin.
- 37:02Speaker 2: That was cool.
- 37:03Speaker 1: John Smiley, Bill Gullickson of Detroit. So that's it. That's
- 37:09Speaker 1: today in 1991 history for you. That's all I got.
- 37:11Speaker 2: Did Erickson win the Cy Young for that? He came
- 37:15Speaker 2: in second. You know who he lost to? I bet
- 37:18Speaker 2: it was Roger Clemens. Yep. He lost to Roger Clemens.
- 37:21Speaker 2: And Roger Clemens deserved it. Roger Clemens went 18-10, but
- 37:25Speaker 2: he struck out 241 and 271 in his third inning.
- 37:27Speaker 2: And he had a 262 ERA and 271 in his
- 37:28Speaker 2: third inning. Scott Erickson was great. 20-8, 318 ERA, but 204.
- 37:40Speaker 2: Roger Clemens pitched 67 and a third more innings than
- 37:44Speaker 2: Scott Erickson did that season. That's insane.
- 37:47Speaker 1: That was his, that was Erickson's second season. This just
- 37:50Speaker 1: goes to show you that like you can project nothing
- 37:53Speaker 1: in this league, but he had two great first two years.
- 37:56Speaker 1: It looked like he's going to be rock for the
- 37:59Speaker 1: twins for the next 10. And like, it really went
- 38:01Speaker 1: downhill pretty quickly. I mean, he had some, he had
- 38:05Speaker 1: some decent years, but overall those were, those were two
- 38:09Speaker 1: yet actually came back at a good one with the
- 38:11Speaker 1: Orioles in, in 97. But, um, yeah, it's, uh, the,
- 38:15Speaker 1: the ERA went up pretty quickly after that. Um, we
- 38:19Speaker 1: mentioned it earlier on the show, but on Thursday, we're
- 38:21Speaker 1: going to do another mailbag. Tyler will be back. If
- 38:23Speaker 1: you have questions for him about the player's perspective, uh,
- 38:27Speaker 1: please leave them in the comments below this video. I'll
- 38:30Speaker 1: also put a post up on the YouTube page, uh,
- 38:33Speaker 1: asking for comments. We might ask on X as well,
- 38:35Speaker 1: wherever you can find us to get us a question.
