- 2:06Dope, dope. Yeah, yeah, slide three, March. March, what was it?
- 2:08March, what was it? March 21st, Life's Unlimited.
- 2:11Show starts at 7 o'clock. So, yeah, you've been doing, you've been a stand-up
- 2:13comedy, doing the same life for a minute.
- 2:15Like, how did you get started into stand-up just in general?
- 2:20Started into stand-up like as far as like what
- 2:23what how did i get interested or just kind of like what was
- 2:26it something yeah like what was it that made you like just get into like
- 2:29do you remember like your first like stand-up performance yes i
- 2:33do i remember so like growing up as a kid like i watched my dad was a big eddie
- 2:38murphy fan so like i watched a lot of eddie murphy growing up so like trading
- 2:43places coming to america harlem nights the golden child so 48 hours like that
- 2:49that was a lot of the stuff that like my dad would watch.
- 2:51And it was something, it was a moment that we would share together.
- 2:54So like as a child, I would watch that. And then when a deaf comedy jam first
- 2:59came out, I was in like middle school.
- 3:02And what I would do is I would stay up late at night and I would take my little
- 3:06VHS tape and I would record all of the deaf comedy jam episodes.
- 3:10And then like I would spend like the whole weekend like watching it.
- 3:15Like I'd wait till my grandparents went to sleep and then I would be up watching
- 3:19it. And then by the time Monday came around, when it was time to go back to
- 3:23school, like I would literally have their sets memorized.
- 3:27So like when I would go to school on Monday, I would be, I would imitate whoever
- 3:31I thought was funny and I would just like do their sets.
- 3:35So like in hindsight, that's where it all started.
- 3:39So my dad, my dad's interest in Eddie Murphy kind of led me into like when house
- 3:45party came out, Martin Lawrence was like Martin Lawrence was who caught my eye
- 3:49and house party, even though he had a small role, he was the DJ.
- 3:53And so then then he was a host of deaf comedy jam.
- 3:56And so then I started watching that. Then I found out he was a standup comedian
- 3:59and then like Martin like took off, like the whole Martin Lawrence thing became a thing.
- 4:05And so Martin was a big comedy influence. I followed everything Martin as a kid.
- 4:10Then fast forward to as an adult.
- 4:15How did I get into stand-up? Like, it was always something that interests me.
- 4:18Shout out to my boy, Andre Bailey.
- 4:20I've known Andre since I was a teenager. Like, I was 15 when I first met Andre.
- 4:26And Andre had already started doing comedy.
- 4:31Wow. When I was in my early 20s, I want to say was when Dre first started.
- 4:36Dre's four years older than me. Four or five years older than me.
- 4:41So like Dre was all so Dre had started doing doing comedy and so I had I had my own interest,
- 4:50and so I started trying to figure out like where the open mics were and stuff
- 4:54like that and then I saw Mike Epps stand up and I don't mean this in any disrespectful
- 5:01way at all but like um in my early 20s that's like when like Mike Epps started
- 5:06doing all the movies with with Ice Cube,
- 5:09So I saw Mike Epps stand up and like when I would watch Mike Epps and all of
- 5:14his movies, I was like, bro, I act like that in real life.
- 5:17Like, you know what I'm saying? But he's getting paid millions of dollars.
- 5:20And I was like, that is cool as shit.
- 5:21Like, it looks like like it looks like all Mike Epps does is be himself all
- 5:26all day long and he gets a bag.
- 5:30So I was like, man, if I could do that, if I could just do that,
- 5:35that's what I would want to do for the rest of my life.
- 5:38And it's no disrespect to Mike Epps, but, like, Martin Lawrence,
- 5:42Bernie Mac, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, like, all of those people,
- 5:48like, you kind of get, like, a God syndrome, you know what I'm saying?
- 5:51So, like, you look up to them, and you're like, I'll never be that.
- 5:54So, like, but seeing Mike Epps, I was like, bro, if I could do that,
- 5:59you know what I'm saying?
- 6:00Like, I know I could do that, because he just seems like he's being himself.
- 6:03So, like, I could be myself. self.
- 6:05And so seeing Mike Epps do it gave me the, the motivation to feel like I could do it myself.
- 6:12And like, I don't mean that in like, I'm not shitting on the brother.
- 6:16It, he actually gave me the confidence to be myself because it looked like,
- 6:22you know what I'm saying?
- 6:23As much as I feel like, you know, Kevin, well,
- 6:26Bernie Mac and all them and Kevin Hart, et cetera, like they're all being themselves
- 6:30it just seemed like there was a level and even at the level he's at like i'm
- 6:34not shitting on it it's it's super dope but like he was the one that made me feel like all right,
- 6:40you you could probably get us a try yeah you he's one of those type of people
- 6:43that you just kind of like i get what you said he's that person that you look
- 6:46at he'd be like oh i could do it like yeah i could i could do this and shit
- 6:50like that but it's not like disrespectful though because you see yourself in
- 6:55them yeah yeah you see yourself yeah you see yourself in them you're Like you look at it,
- 6:58like I said, everybody has that different type of person, like look like just on TV screen.
- 7:03Cause those are the people that we, you know.
- 7:06We don't really fit into like, we see ourselves like in the entertainment business
- 7:11because, or, you know, occupying this, this realm to some, to some capacity.
- 7:15Right. We just, like, you just look at that one person that you see on the TV
- 7:19screen and it just, it just, it's just like a light bulb hits.
- 7:22Yeah. He's like, fuck. Like, yeah. I could like, oh damn. Okay.
- 7:25I see the way he's moving. He has similar, similar personality,
- 7:28similar characteristics to me to where I'm more like, okay, all I gotta do is
- 7:32just kind of like not copy his, like what he's doing, but just that,
- 7:35that work ethic and stuff.
- 7:36Yeah, like, like he's doing something that I'm like, okay, oh yeah,
- 7:40I can do it. Like he cracked the code.
- 7:42Like, and it just, it just flips that switch on you. You're like, that's it.
- 7:46It's wild. Yeah. Yeah. So like seeing him and then, so like I started writing
- 7:51and then shout out Dre actually referred me to my first open mic,
- 7:57which was at, uh, oh my God. That's so disrespectful. Vincent.
- 8:03Oh, oh, it was that. No, no, not Vince's guy.
- 8:06Dang it it's in rancho that's so trash
- 8:09i'm i'm on an interview i can't remember the first place i did comedy
- 8:12at it was right over there in rancho
- 8:16like you can go over the overpass jb's no no it's it's a it's a it's like a
- 8:22biker bar oh i know what you're talking about but it's changed names so many
- 8:25times though it's like yeah i know what you're talking about see all the og
- 8:29is gonna be mad at me too for for not getting it right but like all right so
- 8:32the first place i ever did comedy at It's like right over,
- 8:34God, it's going to hit me too.
- 8:37But so like Dre referred me to my first open mic, which was over in Rancho Cordova, like tucked away.
- 8:44Like if you're getting off of the freeway off of 50, it's like right off of
- 8:48the freeway. It's like right there.
- 8:49So at that time I was, we're working at the motel, which was on the other side
- 8:54of the freeway. At that time it was a quality in.
- 8:57So I was writing, and this was when like the Michael Vick dog thing happened.
- 9:01So like, I was writing a bunch of jokes about the Michael Vick dog thing. Right.
- 9:06So I go to, I go to the open mic and like, I get there and I'm just kind of
- 9:11looking around and I walk in and, um, I see the little sign up sheet or whatnot.
- 9:17And so I just kind of like walk by it, but I got my notebook and Patrick J walks
- 9:21up to me, shout out to Patrick J and he's like.
- 9:24I don't know him at that time but he walks up to me and he's
- 9:26like hey he was like are you are you uh are you
- 9:29are you here for comedy and i was like yeah i'm here
- 9:32to do that comedy i'm here to check it out or what or whatnot and
- 9:35he was like are you signing up i was like yeah i
- 9:38don't know i'm still trying to figure it out and he was
- 9:41like oh all right he was like what's up i'm
- 9:43patrick jay and he sticks his hand out and i'm
- 9:46like what's up i'm mike calvin and like he
- 9:49he doesn't even shake my hand bro he literally spins off
- 9:53and is like i'm i'm assigned
- 9:56you up and he spins off and like
- 9:59i'm sitting there i still got my hand out right and i'm like i'm
- 10:03like this bitch ass nigga i'm like
- 10:06i bet like all right so we in here with like
- 10:09haha niggas you know what i'm saying so i'm i'm
- 10:12on that hype like i'm coming from the streets and shit i'm on i'm
- 10:15like all right so niggas is jokes in in here so
- 10:19and then i'm thinking telling myself i'm like
- 10:21all right well bet he's the only one that knows my
- 10:24name so like if they call me it's not like i gotta get up you know what i'm
- 10:28saying i i can sit there and be like that guy left so you know a bunch of other
- 10:38comics are are there they're signing up you know open And Mike starts,
- 10:42boom, people start getting up on stage, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 10:45Dre, so throughout the night, Dre shows up.
- 10:49Dre's like, oh, oh, oh, what's up, Mike? So I'm like, oh, what's up,
- 10:53nigga? I'm like, ah, fuck, now two people know who I am.
- 10:58So then Dre starts introducing me to, like, the people that he knew and shit.
- 11:03So I'm just kind of like, yeah, yeah, what's up?
- 11:05So at this time, Shane Murphy was the host.
- 11:08Shane comes up to me and Shane's like, are you, he's like, are you Michael Calvin?
- 11:12And I was like, yeah. And he's like, all right, well, you're next.
- 11:17And I'm like, all right. And he's like, so is there anything that you want me to say?
- 11:22And I was like, I was like, no, I'll just say my name, like Beyonce.
- 11:26You know so
- 11:30he goes on stage and he fucking
- 11:33roasts me bro he goes on stage and he's like he's
- 11:36like ladies and gentlemen oh my god you guys are
- 11:39inferred a treat this this man oh
- 11:42my god he stopped doing cocaine and
- 11:45flew all the way from dallas texas to do
- 11:48comedy for you guys guys give it up for michael irvin
- 11:51i mean michael calvin so so
- 11:56like at this time i'm short-haired i
- 11:59ain't got the dreads like i ain't got the glasses and shit so like he's fucking
- 12:02clowning me so like i go on stage and i was like i was like yeah i was like
- 12:08ladies and gentlemen give it up for or no i was like yes i'm not the only celebrity
- 12:14here tonight give it up for your host,
- 12:19the dancing guy from the Six Flag ads.
- 12:25And I was like, and so like, they started laughing and then.
- 12:33I was like, I was like, it's funny that he was bringing up football.
- 12:37And I started talking about all of like my Michael Vick bits and just my bits
- 12:41were basically about how Michael Vick's homeboys weren't shit.
- 12:45Because like if you have a friend that's worth a hundred million dollars,
- 12:48like what else do you have to do but go to jail?
- 12:51Like if I have a friend that's worth a hundred million dollars,
- 12:53like, bro, like I don't care if it's on film. Like, bro, that's me.
- 12:56Like, I don't, I don't even know why we're still talking about all this video.
- 13:00You have like, that's literally me on film. like take me to jail.
- 13:03Like, I'm not even sure why we're talking about this. Like, I don't even know
- 13:06this Michael Vick guy. I don't care if I have his shoes and jersey and all this
- 13:09other signed paraphernalia on. This is just crazy.
- 13:12This is a strange coincidence. So I had a pretty good set. So I got off stage,
- 13:18like they were clapping.
- 13:20And then I get off stage and Shane comes up to me and he, he,
- 13:23he's like, Hey man, that was a great set. Like how, how long have you been doing comedy?
- 13:28And I was like, bro, that was my first time ever on stage. And he was like,
- 13:31for real and he was like man you you got a good
- 13:34stage presence so you should keep at it and i was like all right cool and then
- 13:38when i got off stage like a lot of the other comics were like said the same
- 13:41thing they were like how long you've been doing it and i was like bro this is
- 13:44my first time ever and they were just all like what and so like that was the
- 13:49first time and that was 2006.
- 13:552006 2006 was the first time i got on stage yeah i think he was at the first
- 13:59mic that i had went to up at the San Juan Club or North San Juan Club. I can't remember.
- 14:05Somewhere there off the church. In Roseville? No, it wasn't in Roseville.
- 14:08It was in like Citrus Heights area.
- 14:09Citrus Heights area. It was named Kevin Porter used to do it.
- 14:13Oh, yeah, yeah. Shout out to Kevin Porter. Yeah.
- 14:17Jesus, buddy. You been in the vault because, yeah, I forgot about that, Mike.
- 14:21Yeah, we was doing the little gig right there off of San Juan.
- 14:27Yeah, it was somewhere in the Citrus Heights area. Yeah, yeah,
- 14:29yeah. in Carmichael area.
- 14:31Shout out to Kevin Porter. Yeah, we was doing an open mic out there.
- 14:35Yeah, that was funny. Yeah, that was, yeah, first open mic and then,
- 14:37yeah, put me on my first showcase up there.
- 14:41We did some competition. I can't remember who was all up in there. Yeah.
- 14:44But yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, that was first open mic. Yeah, first showcase I
- 14:48went to and stuff like that. So yeah, I remember.
- 14:50Yeah, that was with, yeah, yeah, with Corey Calvert. Shout out to Corey Calvert.
- 14:54Yeah, oh yeah, that's what y'all was doing.
- 14:57That was my first like, like put on or like see like, like the whole like blunts and bullshit crew.
- 15:05All these, even had the shirts on and everything. I was like,
- 15:07oh, these niggas. Like, this was like a, like, like, like not even like a month
- 15:11at the car. I'm like, oh, these niggas is like cash money out here.
- 15:16Shout out to Fat Partner. Fat Partner made those t-shirts, man.
- 15:20Shout out to my homeboy, uh, Stefan Williams, man. Shout out to Fat Partner, Big Smoke.
- 15:26So yeah, for the people that don't know, blunts and bullshit, So back in the day, man,
- 15:32Me, Corey Calvert, my partner, Big Smoke, we used to meet up in the morning
- 15:37and just smoke, smoke, blunts and talk shit.
- 15:40Cause like I was always up early. Like I was up early. I would drop my daughter off at school.
- 15:45And so during the day, I just had free time.
- 15:48So like they would come through in the morning, we'd be smoking and talking shit.
- 15:52And then one day
- 15:55smoke was like nigga i'm i'm i'm i'm
- 15:59going live and we was like all right and so we just
- 16:01started just cutting up and we did it once like the views went crazy and so
- 16:09then like we was like fuck it let's do it again and then just like it kind of
- 16:13became a thing and then shortly along the way i had met my brother javon whitlock Shout out to Javon.
- 16:20Yeah, shout out to Javon. Shout out to Amy Rogers.
- 16:23Because, yeah, shout out to, God, I don't want to do that to her.
- 16:29The chick that used to be with the glasses with the short hair.
- 16:33Oh, my God, what's her name? Oh, my God, that's so foul.
- 16:37Because she was a part of it, too, and I don't want to. Oh, I know who you're
- 16:42talking about, but I don't remember her name. My God, I can't remember her name.
- 16:45Jesus. But, yeah, she also was a part of the short hair classes.
- 16:52Oh, fuck, I can't remember her name. But so the show turned in.
- 16:56Well, it turned into, like, an actual, like, real, like, podcast.
- 17:00Like, we went from just, like, going live on Facebook in front of my apartment.
- 17:06And then we started, like, we went inside. Smoke made a theme song.
- 17:13Blunts and bullshit. shit. So he made the song and then, then Javon came on and then Amy came on.
- 17:22And so then like every morning we would go on at 10, 10 30.
- 17:28And then we'd go for about an hour, hour, hour and a half.
- 17:32We'd just be smoking and just like before the show, we'd like go on Twitter
- 17:36and see what was trending or just like random topics that were on in, in the news.
- 17:41And then we just more or less like a riff and talk about everything that was going on.
- 17:47And, you know, we had a good little run. Like at first it was me,
- 17:51Corey, it was me, Corey, and Smoke.
- 17:54And then it was me, Corey, Smoke, and Amy.
- 18:01And then Smoke started getting busy with his life.
- 18:06And then it became me, Javon, Corey, and Amy.
- 18:12And then, you know, life happens, people move, et cetera, et cetera.
- 18:16And then it just became a me and Javon thing.
- 18:20But Fat Padma had already made the song. So, like, at that point,
- 18:26it was just me and Javon rocking. So, like, every morning, 10.30, we was on it.
- 18:32We was just on the topics.
- 18:34We'd film at his dad's house, at his parents' house, at my house.
- 18:38Like, if we had shows on the road, like, nigga, we was filming in the car.
- 18:44Like, it just, yeah, the grind was crazy back then.
- 18:48Like, we was putting it in. We was getting it in. Shout out to the whole Blunts and Bullshit family.
- 18:53Without all of them, it couldn't have been what it ended up being. No, it was dope, bro.
- 18:59I remember those were, that was the time, like I said, y'all had,
- 19:01not only was you doing like the busted bullshit, but you were also doing like skits in between it.
- 19:07Really kind of just, like, like just doing everything then with the whole.
- 19:11Doing the Say It Loud show too, still putting like, putting other comedians on too and stuff.
- 19:16Yeah, shout out to, yeah, Say It Loud comedy show.
- 19:19Speaking of, like, yeah, I guess we can talk about that. So,
- 19:22for the people that don't know, I guess kind of talk about myself.
- 19:25So, I've been doing comedy now since like 2006
- 19:28so the way i got
- 19:31so that's how i told you guys how i started doing comedy my
- 19:34my first open mic i've been in a
- 19:36bunch of different like comedy groups shout out to my boy
- 19:39leaf the first comedy group i was ever in was cowboys and cannabis it was me
- 19:46a comedian named leaf aka troy goings oh shit what was the white dude oh my
- 19:53god i'm forgetting people's names that's so So, so trash.
- 19:57He was a, he, he, he was like a real cowboy, like a fucking redneck too, like a redneck cowboy.
- 20:02Like, and he, it was me, him, and I'm trying to remember who the other fucking
- 20:06part of the cannabis was, but it was, but we were in, in, in that group.
- 20:12And then, so when like I first started doing comedy, Leaf was literally the
- 20:16only one that was booking me.
- 20:18So like every, every, everything that Leaf did, he was putting me on,
- 20:21we actually did a live taping of that.
- 20:23Well, not a live taping, but we recorded it.
- 20:26So like, there's a Cowboys and Cannabis DVD out there that I'm on.
- 20:30And then after being part of the Cowboys and Cannabis, I was still on the grind inside doing comedy.
- 20:37Actually, excuse me, let me backtrack because big shout out to Sean Peabody.
- 20:42I want to give a big shout out to Sean P. Sean P was somebody that I met at my first open mic.
- 20:49Sean P. was literally one of the first comedy OGs that, like,
- 20:52took me under his wing and, like, put me on the road, took me to open mics,
- 20:58like, introduced me to comedians in the Bay Area.
- 21:02After my first open mic where I did my first set, I met Sean P.
- 21:06And then, like, we went to Denny's or anything like that. I met D.D. Tyler.
- 21:11I met B.T. Kingsley, Ellis Rodriguez, E. Clark.
- 21:15I want to make sure I'm not forgetting nobody.
- 21:19So like Mikey Winfield. So like Sean P.
- 21:23Sean P. had a whole little crew called the True Grinders. Right.
- 21:27And so like we would literally we would hit like four or five open mics a night,
- 21:33bro. Like, so we'd go from Sac, we'd leave Sac and go to the Bay.
- 21:38And so like, we'd go to the Bay area and then out there at that time,
- 21:42Jesus, the Bay had like four or five open mics a night.
- 21:47So like literally we'd go down there and we'd do one show and like Sean P used to get at me.
- 21:54Like Sean P used to be like, I mean, that was luck.
- 21:57Like you was, I mean, you was lucky, but I mean, we're going to a new show.
- 22:01Like, I don't know if you, you, you, you, you, if you can do it again.
- 22:04And I used to be like, the fuck, nigga, who you talking to?
- 22:06Like, so like Sean would be getting at, at me.
- 22:08So like every open mic that we went to, he'd be like, man, you,
- 22:12you just lucky. Like, I don't know.
- 22:14Like, so I'd be literally going up there trying to kill.
- 22:17And like, it, it was all in, in good fun, but like, he would always be like, I don't know, bro.
- 22:23Like, can, can you follow him? Like, he's, he's funny. Like,
- 22:26I don't know. You just been.
- 22:27And so like, he would always do that. And so Hit the Bay, he started a whole
- 22:33like true grinder movement,
- 22:35which I want to say the true grinder movement was before I joined the Mikes,
- 22:40which the Mikes was another comedy group that I was part of.
- 22:44And a shout out to the Mikes, which was started by Michael O'Connell. Rest in peace.
- 22:50Michael O'Connell randomly messaged me one time saying that there was like,
- 22:54he had saw that there were a bunch of Mikes in the comedy scene,
- 22:58a bunch of different guys named Michael.
- 23:01He was like, we all have different styles of comedy. Like, how would you feel about being in a group?
- 23:06And I was like, fuck it. I'm like, sure. Like, you know, I'd been in a group
- 23:09before and it had worked out.
- 23:11So the group originally was Michael O'Connell, Mike Sinclair,
- 23:17Mike on the mic, who used to be at the Rivercats.
- 23:22Mike Betancourt. Am I missing? Mike Sinclair, me, Michael O'Connell,
- 23:28Mike on the mic. Who am I forgetting?
- 23:32Mike bencourt mike bencourt mike on
- 23:35the mic michael o'connell myself mike sinclair
- 23:38so that was the original five so we
- 23:42did our first we actually were on tv we did good day
- 23:44sacramento which was my first ever tv gig was on good day sacramento we had
- 23:50our first show at laughs unlimited shout out to laughs unlimited did the show
- 23:54the show was a success then mike on the mic started working more or at the Rivercats
- 24:01for the games. He was doing the mic on the mic thing.
- 24:05So then it was just me, Mike Sinclair, Michael O'Connell, and Mike Bencourt.
- 24:10And then the mics took off. We had t-shirts and the whole nine. It was pretty cool.
- 24:15It was a mic logo with a microphone that said the mics.
- 24:18Okay, dope, dope. Still got some t-shirts, too. Shout out to the guys.
- 24:25So from being a part of, like, beat on multiple teams and every team,
- 24:29like, you know, played like a different level,
- 24:30you know, from whatever your role may have been when you were doing the campus
- 24:33comedy to, like, now, like, being, like, I guess you say you be,
- 24:37like, the full force, like, behind the blunted bullshit.
- 24:41What are some of the things that you look back on and say, like,
- 24:44these are the important things that I learned from the benefits of,
- 24:48like, working with the crew, but then also, like, like the pros and cons?
- 24:53I would say, in my experience, the groups that I was a part of,
- 25:00there were different pros and cons.
- 25:02So just in a group dynamic, right, if we're just going to talk about working
- 25:08as a group, right, we'll start with the negative, right, because that's easier.
- 25:14So the negative is that it's a group project. it.
- 25:18So at the end of the day, everything has to be agreed upon or else you don't move forward.
- 25:26Right. So the bad thing about being in a group is you pick up other people's bad habits.
- 25:33Right. So like if one of us lacks ambition, that could literally spread amongst the group.
- 25:41Right. If if one of us has a bad attitude, that can spread amongst the group.
- 25:46So in a group dynamic.
- 25:50The moment it becomes about an individual, it ruins the group dynamic,
- 25:55because now it it makes the other people in the group feel like they're just
- 26:02peons and just at the end of the day, nobody wants to feel like they're a peon. Yeah.
- 26:09Like, because even in a group dynamic, right?
- 26:12Like if you're on the Warriors or the Bulls, like everybody knows who Michael
- 26:17Jordan is and who is Steph Curry.
- 26:18Right. But at the same time, don't make me feel like I don't contribute or just
- 26:24I'm somebody that's just tagging along.
- 26:26Like there are things that I contribute to the team that makes Michael Jordan
- 26:30or Steph Curry better because I'm on the team.
- 26:33So you have those moments like
- 26:36that or you have somebody who's not steph
- 26:39curry or michael jordan and they think they're steph curry and michael jordan
- 26:42so then it throws off the group dynamic because we as
- 26:45a group know who the who might be the
- 26:48star is yeah and now somebody else is trying
- 26:51to like he's just jordy pool yeah exactly you know i'm saying you're you're
- 26:55bro you're you're stop it we've been doing this before you i got here so it's
- 27:00one of those things where that's the negative about the group dynamic is is
- 27:04you pick up other people's bad habits either.
- 27:09Intentionally or in in intentionally now the pros about being in a group is
- 27:15that marketing a group is easier than marketing yourself right because the thing
- 27:21about marketing a group is that.
- 27:24When you're marketing yourself, the conversation stops if I don't like you, right? Yeah.
- 27:30So like the moment I don't like Michael Calvin Jr., this conversation's over.
- 27:35But if I'm talking about the mics, I'm part of a group dynamic.
- 27:40And then most people genuinely think of when they think of a group,
- 27:43they think of diversity.
- 27:45They think that there's literally like you guys are put together because all
- 27:49of you guys bring something different to the table.
- 27:52So what I found with booking and marketing, it was easier to book the mics in
- 28:00comedy clubs and theaters and stuff like that.
- 28:03It was easier to book the mics than, than it was to book my Michael Calvin jr.
- 28:07Because once we research Michael Calvin Jr., if there's anything,
- 28:11we can nitpick the things that we don't like about Michael Calvin Jr.
- 28:16But in a group dynamic, you know, first of all, I'm an individual representing a group.
- 28:22So just that within itself, you give the, it gives the impression that you're
- 28:28more business savvy, I would say.
- 28:30Because since you are part of a group, like I said before, the positive is because
- 28:35everything you're doing, you're in agreement on.
- 28:38So it's not like one of us is, is, is, is just freestyling by himself.
- 28:44You know what I'm saying? Or even if one of us is freestyling,
- 28:47it's because you're the best freestyler.
- 28:50So go, you know what I'm saying? So it's, everything is, or,
- 28:54or organized chaos would be the best way to put it.
- 28:58So that's the best part about being in a group is that you can hide yourself
- 29:03as an individual and focus on on selling the group aspect of it,
- 29:07because I can sell the mics.
- 29:09And I can highlight all the things the mics do and have done and not make it about my part.
- 29:16You know what I'm saying? So that to me was one of the things that I've learned,
- 29:21which has helped me with everything that I've done.
- 29:25Like as far as with the sale out comedy show, smoking joke show,
- 29:29all the other different open mics and stuff that I've had. And even like you
- 29:33said with Blunts and Bullshit, like I've learned how to work as a team and make
- 29:38it about the team and not necessarily about my individual preferences.
- 29:44Yeah, because I think when you're doing things like that, like you're marketing,
- 29:46like you say, you're marketing like the mics or marketing smoking jokes.
- 29:51What you're really, what you're doing is you're creating a brand with every group.
- 29:54And when you do that, like when you're creating a brand, you
- 29:57don't approach it from the same point like how you say like booking yourself because
- 30:00you're doing from like a very selfish or selfless standpoint
- 30:03whereas but like with your brand you're building up a business
- 30:06so you have to make business decisions and that's
- 30:09the most important part of like being in the entertainment business
- 30:12yes is the business aspect of it and learning it to some capacity to where like
- 30:17you know where you could you could fit into that realm because as a comedian
- 30:20you have to understand just how important and being able to conduct yourself
- 30:25in a professional way will help get you so far ahead in this game. Oh yeah, definitely.
- 30:32Like I agree with that a thousand percent, which is also when you're thinking
- 30:38about the team dynamic, you tend to avoid doing personal things that affect the group, right?
- 30:44Like, so here's the weird thing about comedy, right?
- 30:48Is that you get into the business because, you know, it's a free speech thing,
- 30:51But you can find yourself putting yourself in a position where you're not saying
- 30:58certain things because you're not trying to, you know,
- 31:01ruffle any feathers or razzle-dazzle anybody,
- 31:04et cetera, et cetera. But, you know.
- 31:07I feel that that's where the challenge is, is that, no, you got to find a way
- 31:13to say what you're trying to say.
- 31:14Just your problem is your choice of words at that moment.
- 31:19You're avoiding the challenge that comes with creating something that comes with that. Yeah.
- 31:24And, and nah, it's not about not say that it's say that you just got to find,
- 31:29you just got to find your way to say that.
- 31:31And, like, for example, and shout out to Mario Hodge, because he posted something
- 31:38about this the other day.
- 31:40He was talking about how when Black comics, like, go extra hard in front of
- 31:46white people, like, and then you get just, like, nigga, nigga,
- 31:48nigga, all in front of white people, and it's down to third.
- 31:50And then, like, that's annoying.
- 31:52And then I've also seen Black people pump fake in front of the white people,
- 31:56because they, like, like, now, all of a sudden, you don't want to do it.
- 32:00You know what I'm saying? Like, that's what you've been doing.
- 32:03So now you get to the point where now it's time and now you pump faking.
- 32:06So in my opinion, I feel that's the comedy grind, right?
- 32:11Is you learn how to be yourself in all environments or you avoid the challenge
- 32:17because in every different open mic and in every different comedy book and it
- 32:22has its own set of challenges.
- 32:24So what most comics end up doing is you fall into your comfort zone and you
- 32:29only go to like these type of rooms that have this type of environment or that
- 32:32type of environment where the challenge is being to go anywhere and do your thing. So.
- 32:41The benefit of being in a group is that that group will normally put you in
- 32:47places where, as an individual, you might not have been able to get to.
- 32:51So working with the mics, like, we did a show, Jesus Christ,
- 32:57it was in the middle of nowhere up north, like, past Auburn or something.
- 33:01It was a theater show. I want to say we only had, like, 20 people or some shit
- 33:04that showed up, but we still did it, and they breaded us out.
- 33:08It was a pretty good payday. Shout out to wherever that place was.
- 33:13And but it was all you know all white people
- 33:16we're in the middle of nowhere and just i've never
- 33:19felt the need to tailor my comedy to any individual
- 33:22crowd like yeah as a comic you might in the
- 33:26flow of it create some things you know
- 33:28but i'm not pulling back on nothing like
- 33:32i've i've crafted this in a way that it should
- 33:35work everywhere and and that comes from being
- 33:38in a group where you know different because
- 33:42when you're in a group everybody is supposed to be
- 33:45helping with the bookings so the people that
- 33:48might like a buddy that make that call for the booking
- 33:51might not have been somebody that would have been fucking with me you
- 33:54know i'm saying but now i gotta make sure that in a
- 33:57group dynamic i'm not throwing this whole thing off yeah and
- 34:00then also you don't want to become like the guy
- 34:03you know i'm saying like i'm not trying to be the black guy
- 34:06yeah in in the group like i'm not trying to be the weed guy like oh when he
- 34:11comes up here we go you know so and that's what the that's what the journey
- 34:17with your writing is that you know which again if you want to be the guy that's
- 34:22your thing like i i don't knock it but i've always looked at,
- 34:27developing the craft so wherever i go i can do this yeah and i'm not gonna and i'm not,
- 34:34watering it down nor am i blackening it up you know what i'm saying like.
- 34:41Like i'm a nigga 24 7 so being a nigga
- 34:44around some niggas i ain't nothing new and so it's not
- 34:47like i'm uncomfortable or being watered down about it just like when i'm in
- 34:51situations where there's not a lot of niggas like it's not like all of a sudden
- 34:55i don't know how to conduct myself or use a vocabulary that these people can't
- 35:00relate to or if i feel like like, niggin' it up in front of these people. Like, whatever.
- 35:07No, I remember talking about just, like, just going to different rooms and just
- 35:12being funny, funny, funny, funny. Like, going back to Andre Bailey.
- 35:15Like, the first time I went to touch a class, I did all right.
- 35:19But, yeah, Andre Bailey, he just pulled me to the side. He's like,
- 35:21yo, bro, just people is people.
- 35:23He's like, just make him laugh and shit. At the end of the day,
- 35:25just make him fucking laugh and shit, bro. Yeah. Like, that's...
- 35:31See, people don't get it. And when I do interviews like this,
- 35:35like I always try to point to this out, like,
- 35:38doing like black audiences have a higher
- 35:41standard for comedy than most crowds
- 35:44because most black people only relate
- 35:47comedy to their favorite comedian
- 35:50and in most cases black people are literally comparing you to a fucking legend
- 35:55you know what i'm saying like their favorite is a kevin hart or like bernie
- 35:59mack dave chapelle dion cole like they're literally comparing you to to somebody
- 36:05who in their field, they're the fucking shit.
- 36:08And here you are, somebody I've never saw before. I had to pay $20 to get in this bitch. Nigga, go.
- 36:17Like, I ain't trying to see all the dancing and all that. Nigga,
- 36:20I dance better than that.
- 36:21Nigga, I got that outfit. Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 36:24So, like, in general, like, black out and then, you know, black people in general,
- 36:28they got to work harder to get their money.
- 36:30And all the stuff we deal with is just being black. So, like,
- 36:32there's that part of it. So when it comes to now, I'm supposed to just give
- 36:37you some laughs, nigga. Like, nah, nigga, you got to get this.
- 36:41Ain't no ain't no giveaway laughs in a black audience.
- 36:45Like, you got to bring that. You got to bring that work. Well,
- 36:48but again, when you look at it from that perspective, right?
- 36:52Because I'm a fan of comedy. I've been to comedy shows like before I was doing
- 36:57comedy, like, bro, I'm judging you to the highest scale, whereas anybody else,
- 37:03I'm not doing that with them.
- 37:04So literally my bar for them is lower. And in my experience,
- 37:10and this is no disrespect to white crowds or anything like that,
- 37:13but just they're sometimes you're going to deal with audiences that their only
- 37:19engagement with a black person is coming to see their favorite performers.
- 37:24So that's his, this is literally their moment where they can say they have a
- 37:29black friend, you know what I'm saying?
- 37:30So when you look at it from that perspective, the bar is a bit lower.
- 37:35They've never, they've never saw that dance, you know, they don't, they don't.
- 37:40They're trying to put together, like, what does it mean? Like,
- 37:44does the shirt mean something? Does the pants mean something?
- 37:46There's a deeper meaning.
- 37:47Yeah, like, everything is deeper when just, like, nah, bro, these are just dance.
- 37:53Yeah, this is just, this was the outfit I put on all the way here.
- 37:57Like, it's not that deep. Whereas with, you know, with black people,
- 38:01nigga, I got all that, nigga. And mine is better.
- 38:05So, there's that. that but i i love it like which
- 38:08is why a great show gives you a good
- 38:11mix of everybody you you got people that have
- 38:14high standards of comedy you have people that are that might be easier to entertain
- 38:18so that's what makes a good crowd how do you take that approach and apply it
- 38:24to when you're doing the say loud comedy well let's go back to like how the
- 38:27say loud comedy show even and like got started. Aha, I bet.
- 38:32So shout out to Jennifer Canfield, owner of Jennifer Canfield and her family,
- 38:38Laura and Skip, owners of Laughs Unlimited.
- 38:43So rest in peace to TV Entertainment, my homegirl, Tavena Crocker.
- 38:48So my homegirl, Tavena, she had a brother that was trying to do comedy.
- 38:54God, why can I not think of his name? I'm forgetting so many people's names, bro. That's so trash.
- 38:59But her brother was trying to do comedy. And I had already kind of had my foot in the game.
- 39:06So she put her first show together at Tommy T's. So we did a show at Tommy T's out there.
- 39:12Show was a success, packed out the whole nine.
- 39:16So fast forward to she wants to do it again at Labs Unlimited.
- 39:21So, excuse me, she invites me to have a mixer.
- 39:25With the owner with the owner so like they're having drinks etc etc so we get
- 39:30to meet the owner to tvs kind of telling her about how she wants the show to
- 39:34run etc etc introduce me i'll be the host first time i make jennifer you know
- 39:40etc etc show date is on the date that the show's on so boom,
- 39:45on the day of the show the show starts at eight i get to laughs at like seven
- 39:49though like i get to laugh something limited at like seven o'clock and when
- 39:53i get there like the club is like kind And like, I don't really see anybody.
- 39:57So just, I walk in and I just kind of sit down.
- 39:59I got my material, just kind of writing.
- 40:02And then Jen walks in and I remember her from the mixer. And I'm like,
- 40:06hey, excuse me. I was like, I'm sorry.
- 40:08You remember me i'll be the host for
- 40:11tonight and she's like yeah and i was like so curious
- 40:14like is there any like drink specials or any
- 40:17like announcements you want me to make while i'm on on on
- 40:21stage and she like double looks
- 40:23at me and she's like are you serious and i
- 40:26was like yeah and she
- 40:30was like she she was like you might be my
- 40:33favorite host and you and you you don't even even fucking work
- 40:35here and i'm still and then you know
- 40:38jen like she's real sarcastic like she's tall
- 40:41like she's thick so like this whole conversation i'm just kind of like i'm like
- 40:45am i fucking up right now i was like am i in trouble like i feel like i feel
- 40:51like i'm doing the good thing right here right so she's she's like she's like
- 40:56yeah actually you know there's There's a show coming up, blah,
- 40:58blah, blah, blah. So I get that.
- 41:01And so shout out to TV. We do the show.
- 41:05Show goes well. I have a great set. At the end of the night,
- 41:08she books me to host at the club.
- 41:12Not that weekend, but for a future date.
- 41:15So that was when I got my first weekend at Labs.
- 41:19So the Say About Comedy show comes about when I had brought a cat.
- 41:23I brought a cat. Shout out to Steve Fury. I was working at Laughs and I brought
- 41:28Steve Fury to do a guest set at Laughs Unlimited because I was telling him,
- 41:33I was like, bro, I'm hosting and I think that I could get you in.
- 41:38You know what I'm saying? I'm doing pretty well. So I just come up and do a guest set.
- 41:43So he comes, does a guest set, fucking kills it.
- 41:46Steve Fury, funny comic, you know what I'm saying, does his thing. Still doing his thing.
- 41:52So he kills it. Jen books him.
- 41:55Couple months later down the line me and her having a like conversation after
- 42:00like a comedy competition And she's talking about how like some of the competitions
- 42:04don't produce people that work at the club She's like I've been doing these
- 42:08competitions and just sometimes people win the competition,
- 42:11but they don't fit the weekend club setting and.
- 42:15She was like and then sometimes comics you you guys refer your friends Which
- 42:20I get it like if you're working at a club Why not hook your, your friends up?
- 42:25And she was saying that, but the problem is that you guys lose credibility with
- 42:29me when you book people, when you send me people that aren't funny and like,
- 42:33but that's your, your, your, your friend.
- 42:36But at the same time, it changes my opinion on your opinion of funny because
- 42:42you sent me somebody who's not funny.
- 42:43So now I can't necessarily trust the referral. referral.
- 42:47So like, as we're kicking around, she just kind of spit, spit balling the idea.
- 42:52And I was like, well, what if I had a comedy show that was for people that didn't
- 42:55work at that was specifically for people that didn't work at the club,
- 42:59but it wasn't like a competition.
- 43:02It was more or less like an audition show.
- 43:04And she was like, all right. She was like, sure. I'll give you a date,
- 43:07blah, blah, blah. She gives me a date nights over. I go home.
- 43:10She calls me the next morning and is like, your idea kept me up.
- 43:15And she was like, Cause I feel like you would really have something that,
- 43:18that could work if you just, if you could, like, if you were open to some things
- 43:23that I won't want to talk to you about.
- 43:24So, bro, we had about a two hour conversation about from a club owner's perspective,
- 43:30like what it takes to be successful, like what, what on their end they need
- 43:35to see as far as revenue turnout, et cetera, et cetera.
- 43:39Marketing ideas, blah, blah, blah. So I get off the phone with her,
- 43:43call Mikey Winfield. Shout out to Mikey Winfield. Oh, yeah.
- 43:46Another comedy OG big bro.
- 43:50So I call Mikey and I tell Mikey, I'm like, hey, bro, like Jen's letting me do a show.
- 43:57Like, what should I do to make this like show pop?
- 44:01And Mikey's like, that's dope.
- 44:04He's like, that's dope. He's like, congratulations, bro. So then literally I
- 44:09get another two hour conversation where Mikey is literally just giving me the business.
- 44:15Mikey's like, bro, you got to understand that everything is a representation of you.
- 44:20If the toilets don't work, that's a representation of you because it was Mike's
- 44:24show that we went to and the toilets didn't work.
- 44:26If the comics are making rape jokes nigga
- 44:29that was your show where they were making those creepy jokes
- 44:33excuse me if the flyer's trash it's your like it's your flyer that's trash so
- 44:38mike taught me that everything about the show is a representation of you and
- 44:44you have to think about that when you're putting it out there and not only that
- 44:48he's he mentioned how nine times times out of 10,
- 44:52I'm going to be doing a show where the people aren't going to know the comics that I have on the show.
- 44:58So to get around that, I had to have something that was giving back to the crowd,
- 45:04like something that made them feel like they were getting something out of going
- 45:07to the show to see some comics that they've never, never heard.
- 45:12Before. Yeah. So like Mikey was telling me all, all that and just like,
- 45:17so boom, get off the phone.
- 45:21With Mikey and then it was just like to the drawing board. So like I was coming
- 45:25up with a bunch of different ideas, but prior to getting the show at laughs,
- 45:30shout out to Terrence and.
- 45:33Man, Brother Given. They had an open mic that I won, and I became the host,
- 45:39and I was hosting it in downtown Sac, in Tropicana.
- 45:43I think that's what it was called, whatever.
- 45:45So prior to that, I was doing an open mic comedy competition.
- 45:50Saul Trujillo won the competition at that one that I had. Shout out to Saul. Oh, yeah.
- 45:55So fast forward to, I get the show at laughs.
- 45:59Howard is already making my flyers because we were doing that thing.
- 46:04And so I was trying to think of a name for the comedy show and just,
- 46:08you know, different things kept coming to me.
- 46:11And then just, I had had an interesting set a couple of weeks prior to that with another comic.
- 46:18And like in this particular situation, we were doing a show in Folsom and we were smoking a blunt.
- 46:24And this nigga was talking to me about how he felt like he should have known
- 46:29that the show was going to be kind of weird because I was on the show and I
- 46:34was like trying to get where the nigga was going with what he was saying.
- 46:38And he just said that I wasn't a black comic. This nigga saying this shit took him out of you.
- 46:42And he was just saying, well, like, you're not like a black comic.
- 46:45I was thinking to myself, I'm looking at this nigga. I'm like,
- 46:47nigga, I'm going to hit you in your face right now.
- 46:50But so we're smoking and whatever and I'm just listening to what he's saying and just,
- 46:55long story short that particular night I had a better set than him and he had
- 47:00to follow it and that particular night he had a rough night,
- 47:03so at that particular time I'm thinking of a name for the comedy show I'm like
- 47:06trying to think of something so like James Brown starts playing like randomly
- 47:11it was when the James Brown movie was out and so it was just say it loud I'm
- 47:17back and I'm proud say it loud.
- 47:20And I was just like, boom, like say it loud.
- 47:24So in essence, it's say it loud. I'm black. I'm proud. Yeah.
- 47:29But just say it out. So it was subtle.
- 47:35I said, niggas, welcome. Say it loud.
- 47:39And so I was, to this date, it was going on 11 years ago. My first show,
- 47:43Marcus Miles, Cheryl the Soccer Mom, Anderson.
- 47:48Oh, God, Cheryl the Soccer Mom. Carlos Rodriguez.
- 47:52Mars Parker. Shout out to Mars Parker. It was on my first ever Say It Loud comedy show.
- 47:58And yeah, my first show was in August, and we was on and popping.
- 48:03And so, yeah, the first comedians that were to ever get booked at Loud's Unlimited
- 48:08for a paid weekend is Chris Riggins.
- 48:11Chris Riggins, Des Henderson, and Eric Murphy were on the third ever Say It
- 48:18Loud comedy show that I ever had.
- 48:19And all three of them got passed on that show.
- 48:23And Chris Riggins is still doing comedy. I'm not sure. Des, shout out to Des.
- 48:30I'm not sure what Eric Murphy's still doing right now, but anybody who's ever
- 48:34saw Chris Riggins, he's a beast and just...
- 48:38Every time i see chris's success like to me i'm i'm
- 48:41like it's not it's nothing new to me because like
- 48:43i've i've known since i saw the guy like nah chris is
- 48:47a beast like chris riggins is a monster so shout
- 48:50out to chris like for real for real no yeah me and chris was in a actually we
- 48:53was in a movie together no last year about the year before stuff like that it
- 48:57was funny it was a movie about like stand-up comedy that's right that's right
- 49:01i was just playing myself just performing comedy that he's up like he roasts
- 49:05me a little bit like that but he was playing the host of the
- 49:08of the comedy competition. Shout out. Yeah.
- 49:10Hey, shout out to the gang, man. Shout out to Chris Riggins, man. Yeah. Yeah.
- 49:16Just talk to him. I say, yeah, Chris do early big things. That was,
- 49:19that's what's up. Good to see. I don't care.
- 49:21Like I'm, I'm telling him all like every chance I get, if he's available,
- 49:26I try to have him when I do the anniversary show in August.
- 49:30Like I, I always try to have him be the headliner because number one,
- 49:35I feel like without him, I wouldn't have had the show that I had because he
- 49:40was literally the first one Jen ever picked from a sale-out comedy show was Chris Riggins.
- 49:46So, like, and the whole point of my show was to help comics get paid weekends.
- 49:51So just, like, I don't want to, just, yeah. Like, I just, yeah.
- 49:57Every time Chris does something, it's not a surprise to me.
- 50:01It's literally like, bro, you been that guy.
- 50:04And, like, ever since I first saw it, And just like, I'm happy to see more people
- 50:10see the talent that he has.
- 50:12Cause yeah. Like, so anytime I get the anniversary show and,
- 50:17and if he's available to headline, he's always who I got closing it.
- 50:21And then not only that, not only is he part of the success of the show,
- 50:27like he's a beast. So, like, every time he's coming, like, it's not like you're
- 50:31gonna get the same jokes.
- 50:32He got a whole new get-down, and it's always fire. So, shout-out to the guy.
- 50:37Well, yeah, shout-out to Chris. And so...
- 50:40You've been doing it for how long again? What was it? You said by like 11 years or 2006, bro. Yeah.
- 50:4718 years, 18 years. Yes, sir. So that's like one of the, like one of the longest
- 50:52running like comedy shows.
- 50:54Oh no. The sale out comedy show is going on. This year will be,
- 50:57this year will be 11 years.
- 50:58Yeah. So I mean, yeah, but still, yeah, that's still one of the longest running
- 51:01comedy shows just around the Sacramento that I can remember. Yeah. Yeah.
- 51:08Touch of Class has been the only thing that's been going longer than the Say It Loud comedy show.
- 51:12Yeah, Touch of Class is the institution, though. That's where it teaches.
- 51:16Every comedian I've had on this show, it always comes back to just the Touch of Class.
- 51:21It's just the type of institution that it is for comedians.
- 51:26Man, bro, let me tell you about the Touch of Class, man. Shout out to B.T. Kingley, man.
- 51:30B.T. Kingley was the first ever creator of the Grown and Sexy Comedy Night.
- 51:36And like man when bt was
- 51:39the host let me tell you it was you know
- 51:42that prime documentary where they were talking about how lit
- 51:45it was at the little chocolate sundaes or whatever they were
- 51:47doing thing bro bt had that popping in
- 51:50sack like literally the touch of
- 51:53class would be like 100 plus every sunday
- 51:57bad ones homie like some of the
- 51:59baddest females you done ever seen like in and like
- 52:03everybody like it was literally like grown and
- 52:05sexy like you had to come fitted like what no coming like
- 52:09how some people just come to roll to the cut like nah bruh not
- 52:12on that night like you fuck around and not be dressed right
- 52:15like you you don't even want to get on stage because everybody looking so
- 52:18bt would have that thing popping
- 52:21like this 2006 seven ish like
- 52:24and bt was like bt kingsley
- 52:28was the nigga like for real for real like he
- 52:30had that thing popping and so like not only
- 52:33that bt's a beast so he was on stage dropping fire and then bringing niggas
- 52:40up so fuck around and not be even if you couldn't ride the wave and you got
- 52:46drowned shout out to dj rip one them niggas were dropping bombs when you you
- 52:51was on stage and be like Like,
- 52:52niggas started bombing you while you was on there. Oh, man.
- 52:57Niggas would turn your mic off and have a nigga come get you. Bruh, it was real life.
- 53:02Night at the Apollo, like, nigga, you get roasted.
- 53:06And then not only that, BT gonna get on stage and then get on you for bombing.
- 53:11And then he might do another five, ten minutes of nigga super duper fire and
- 53:17then bring the next nigga up. So, like, bruh.
- 53:19So, literally, all night, you could fuck around and, like, I done seen cats
- 53:23be like, nah, I ain't going up. I ain't going up.
- 53:27I've went there on nights and seen stuff and been like, nah,
- 53:30I don't feel like I got the glow tonight.
- 53:34So i didn't see plenty of cat turned fade down
- 53:38so you know what i'm saying when it came to the to the touch back
- 53:40then and then andre bailey became
- 53:44the host and kept it going and then
- 53:47at that time that's when tristan started nutty monday shout out to
- 53:49tristan johnson and then yeah man like
- 53:53i'm like back in my early grinding days like to touch a class on sunday and
- 53:57then when trist started nutty mondays like bro literally sunday monday you had
- 54:02to bring your a game brother like you had to bring your a game and not just
- 54:06a game as far as comedy you better be dressed right or you're gonna get your
- 54:09feelings hurt because they're gonna talk about your outfit too,
- 54:12it was it was black comedy but we we talking about ashy fingers i'm talking
- 54:19about last year's fits like oh yeah bro you was getting it and but it was all
- 54:24it was all love man it was all love so So, like, you looked forward to it, bro.
- 54:29Like, you looked forward to it. You know you was going to get,
- 54:32you know you was going to become, like, it's just going to make you a better comedian. Heck, yeah.
- 54:36It was. But just not only that, like, bro, like, Cats was coming through.
- 54:41Like, when, like, the Rodney Perrys, the, the, the, the.
- 54:46Like, all of the people, like, before they became big, like,
- 54:49Tiffany Haddish, like, niggas was coming through there to the touch.
- 54:52Like, BT was bringing people, like, you know what I'm saying?
- 54:55So, like, it was a bunch of little, like, big name, like, people that are big
- 55:01names now that slid through to the touch.
- 55:03Like, hell, BT was instrumental in having the whole Kevin Hart,
- 55:08Heart of the City thing at the touch of class when that thing happened.
- 55:12And so, you know, like BT put on for the city and he did all of it at the Touch of Class.
- 55:18So a lot of things that are still going now, he was the foundation for that.
- 55:23So even when I got my chance to host the Touch of Class, like shot out to Beltroy,
- 55:31Tia, the whole Touch of Class family.
- 55:33You know what I'm saying? Like when I had my opportunity to host,
- 55:36I did my best to try to bring back the BT style.
- 55:39All like i was clowning niggas like
- 55:42if niggas wasn't funny i was talking about them like it was
- 55:45like yeah so yeah i was a little aggressive with
- 55:48my well in today's comedy environment what i
- 55:51was doing was a little aggressive but at the end of the day like if you're a
- 55:55comic you you get it like i'm having fun with you i'm not belittling you i'm
- 56:00not bullying you it's all these are just chucks so and that was a comedy environment
- 56:05i grew up in so shout out to sean p like i grew up with, are you sure you can follow him?
- 56:11Like, I don't know, bro. I mean, you've been lucky lately.
- 56:14I've done it to you.
- 56:19Shit. I do it to Javon all the time. No matter where we go, I'm like,
- 56:25bruh. I'm like, I don't know, my nigga.
- 56:29No, bruh, you've been lucky lately.
- 56:32He'd be like, alright, nigga. So yeah, shout out to the gang,
- 56:35man. Yeah, and one thing I did notice, because like BT, he's out there in LA,
- 56:39he's hosted like Chocolate Sundays.
- 56:41And there is something that I noticed just like, because I went down to LA last
- 56:45year. And he's in the Sprite commercial. In the Sprite commercial, yeah.
- 56:49But there's just something about like, I don't know, like there's like something
- 56:52in the waters out here, like, especially like you said, during that time,
- 56:55that just bred a lot of beast.
- 56:58A lot of beast that like came for that period of time. Because like,
- 57:02not even like just for a period, but like.
- 57:04And in SAC, you're talking in like the Bay Area, you're talking like,
- 57:07you know, Mario Hodges. We're talking about like, you know, the Rico,
- 57:10the Grays. We're talking about the Reginas.
- 57:12We're talking about, like you say, Tristan. We're talking about Lance Woods.
- 57:15We're talking about Mikey Winfields. All these comedians that Carlos Rodriguez,
- 57:19all these comedians that are something about, there's something about out here that just.
- 57:23Anthony K. Anthony K. Like all these things that you're talking about,
- 57:26just how the way the times were, you could just definitely see. Insane wings.
- 57:30Insane wings. But yeah, you see just how a bunch of like there's a there's a
- 57:34strong community of comedians.
- 57:35I like my father is really out here. Just fucking funny.
- 57:39Yeah, I actually got I got that one time when I was in.
- 57:43I did a show in Denver and one of the cats I did a show with.
- 57:48He was I did the show. I had a guy fucking killed it that night, too.
- 57:53And afterwards he was like, so Sacramento.
- 57:56He was like, yeah, he was like, do you know Lance? So I was like,
- 58:00yeah, I know Lance. And he was like, yeah.
- 58:02He was like, wait. He was like, there's another guy out of there.
- 58:06I was like, Kyrie Shabazz. And he was like.
- 58:08Kyrie's the other one too, yeah. He was like, Kyrie's from SAC?
- 58:11I was like, yeah. He was like, no. But he was like, he has an afro.
- 58:15And I was like, Mikey Winfield.
- 58:16And he was like, yeah. He was like, yeah. He was like, man.
- 58:20He was like, you Sacramento guys are pretty good. And I was like, damn.
- 58:26I was like, that nigga, that's a murderer's row right there.
- 58:29They're Mikey, Lance, Kyrie, like, yeah, man, yeah.
- 58:33Happy to be mentioned in any time those three get mentioned because,
- 58:37like, we all have the people that we're chasing.
- 58:39So, like, in terms of, like, my Sacramento icons or people, like,
- 58:44I look up to, Lance, well, Mikey Winfield, well, in no particular order,
- 58:49Mikey Winfield, Lance, with Kyrie, Shabazz, because, like, they doing it.
- 58:53They doing it, doing it. Shout out to all three of those guys.
- 58:56It's definitely the Sacramento Kings for sure right there. For sure, for sure.
- 59:01But then even the, cause she said like they had kept it hard for a bit,
- 59:04the heart of the city out here, the touch of class.
- 59:07But there's just, I don't know. Oh, and shout out to, you know,
- 59:09I can't say Lance and not say Tony Roberts.
- 59:12Like, man, shit, shout out to Tony Roberts, one of the greatest motherfuckers
- 59:14to ever get on the stage. Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 59:16Like, yeah, Tony Roberts, legend. Make sure you see Tony Roberts live.
- 59:20Shit, I'm not, let me not fucking, yeah.
- 59:25Monster. Sorry. Sorry. I looked right there. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 59:27Since we mentioning people, yeah. Tony Roberts, beast.
- 59:30Yeah. No, it's definitely, like I said, we're definitely fortunate.
- 59:33And sometimes, say, the one, like, we was talking about, like,
- 59:35applying, like, putting that work and stuff like that.
- 59:37Like, one of the things that I think that I took away, like,
- 59:41not taking advantage of is just understanding the fact that we are lucky to
- 59:47be the president of so many communities where we could just soak up the type of game to where,
- 59:50like, going back to how you were saying to me, like, with the Mike Epps situation,
- 59:54like, this is the person who, like, clicked, right?
- 59:56Like, oh, this made me want to do it. Like, we got them in abundance out here
- 1:00:00compared to, like, other, unless you're talking about L.A., New York.
- 1:00:04Okay, Ben. On that note, since we're talking about soccer mental work ethic,
- 1:00:09the three people I mentioned, right, Kyrie, Lance,
- 1:00:14and Mikey Winfield, as a person who has like saw their arc, right,
- 1:00:20saw when they were, you know, doing the regular open mics like the rest of like all comics.
- 1:00:25And then like now they're on tours, they're in theaters, they're in arenas,
- 1:00:29they're in movies, they're, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:00:31Opening for big names and are big names within themselves.
- 1:00:36So like, people don't know this, like, unless you saw it.
- 1:00:41I've saw Lance Woods stand by the door at the end of the night and take everybody's
- 1:00:48cell phone and ask them to follow him on Instagram.
- 1:00:51Like every show, every open mic, Lance would be right there at the end of the
- 1:00:57night, taking people's phones, typing it in, follow me, follow me,
- 1:01:00follow me, follow me, follow me, boom, follow me, follow me, boom, boom, boom.
- 1:01:03So like that type
- 1:01:07of dedication and you see where a person's success
- 1:01:10is like bro like i saw lance do
- 1:01:13that with my own eyes and i used to be a be i'd be
- 1:01:16like nigga i am not doing that like that is fucking crazy like you're gonna
- 1:01:19fucking like and just to see where he's at with his followers and with his grind
- 1:01:24and his ability to pack out shows like bro discipline and that's something you
- 1:01:29can learn from mikey winfield every Every time Mikey Winfield comes out to an open mic,
- 1:01:35Mikey Winfield has a notepad and a pencil and a pen.
- 1:01:39And Mikey Winfield is literally writing until the time he gets to,
- 1:01:43until he gets to, to the stage, he is writing, writing, writing, writing, writing.
- 1:01:48He'll entertain you, be polite, the whole shit. And then he's going to get right
- 1:01:52back into his groove of writing.
- 1:01:54And then he's going to get on stage and he's going to perform some of the most.
- 1:02:00Master crafted comedy you are ever going to fucking see.
- 1:02:04Like I say it all the time. Like Mikey Winfield is a fucking,
- 1:02:07he's like a comedy sensei because it's going to be, you never know where it's
- 1:02:14going to go, but it's going to be funny because Mikey can get gutter.
- 1:02:17He can get like, he can get clean, like just everything about Mikey's style is just perfection.
- 1:02:24So, and just to see somebody who, even when I first started doing comedy,
- 1:02:29he had already he had had a certain level of
- 1:02:32success like one time me and javon were in vegas and
- 1:02:35we just randomly saw mikey winfield on a
- 1:02:38fucking on one of the marquees on a vegas on
- 1:02:41one of them vegas casino things and we're like oh he's really that nigga like
- 1:02:47like what the like damn like and just you would never know because he's so polite
- 1:02:54he's so cordial he's so respectful so just like Like,
- 1:02:58to see his grind and see his success,
- 1:03:02it's one of them things where, like, bro, when you see it up close, you're not surprised.
- 1:03:05Like, y'all are late to the party. Like, some of us have seen it firsthand.
- 1:03:12Kyrie Shabazz, like, man, his writing is fucking crazy. Crazy.
- 1:03:19And like, I remember there was a time and this is no knock,
- 1:03:22but just there was a time where people were saying that they felt he was a joke
- 1:03:26thief because he was doing, you know, how you can remix a joke or just your
- 1:03:31perspective on a joke is, is the same as something. Like if,
- 1:03:34if you're making a fat joke, right.
- 1:03:36Some of what you're going to touch on, somebody's heard before,
- 1:03:39but just, you might've, you might've got to the same destination,
- 1:03:45just took a different route.
- 1:03:46Right. So like at that time, he was getting hit with that, man,
- 1:03:52his fucking writing now you would never, you would never in your life confuse
- 1:03:57him for being somebody else.
- 1:03:58And his writing is so fucking phenomenal.
- 1:04:01If you've ever gone to like, watch his, go to his Instagram page and watch his clips.
- 1:04:06Like, bro, them jokes are, are mastercrafted. Like for real,
- 1:04:11for real. So again, sensei cut on the shit.
- 1:04:14Same thing with Lance.
- 1:04:17Like these dudes are masterful with those words. Like.
- 1:04:23And I'm not knocking nobody who I may not be mentioning, because I know how niggas get in a feeling.
- 1:04:27But I'm just saying that as far as people who are from Sacramento,
- 1:04:31people that rep Sacramento or are from Sacramento, like in terms of the success
- 1:04:36that they have being a guy from Sacramento, those are the three people that I'm like, all right,
- 1:04:41that's the beaten path that you're trying to follow.
- 1:04:45Yeah, definitely would say, like, let's say going back to how you're saying
- 1:04:49with starting up Say It Loud, giving comedians opportunities and stuff like that.
- 1:04:56That's the same type, like the work ethic that you put to that,
- 1:04:59like you even took Say It Loud show out to Vegas.
- 1:05:04Doing shit out in Vegas.
- 1:05:07Yes. Once upon a time, the Say It Loud comedy show was in Vegas,
- 1:05:11but it was called, oh God, what do we call it?
- 1:05:14It was called Comedy Night at the Chocolate Lounge. but it was basically a co-production
- 1:05:19of the sail out comedy show shout out to cynthia stager.
- 1:05:22So the way the vegas thing came about was speaking of bunsen bullshit the little
- 1:05:27live podcast we were doing we had a guy that used to regularly watch the show
- 1:05:31he was out in nevada he worked out a bar his bar had had a comedy night so he
- 1:05:37invited me and javon out there to do the comedy night,
- 1:05:40we met the host of the comedy, Manfred Haim. Shout out to Manfred Haim.
- 1:05:45And so Manfred was telling us that he had a show in Vegas that since we were
- 1:05:51doing the show Monday, we could follow it up and do the show Wednesday.
- 1:05:56So we were like, all right, bet. So we do the show at the bar,
- 1:06:00had a good time, had a great set.
- 1:06:02At the end of the night, we met Cynthia and come
- 1:06:06to to find out she had you know she had dibbled and dabbled and
- 1:06:09watched blunts and bullshit here and and there so you
- 1:06:12know she was like oh yeah i'm happy to finally meet you like me i
- 1:06:15meet i meet meet you guys the comedy being there she was
- 1:06:18like our our turnout is hitting this some sometimes but she was like you guys
- 1:06:23will be paid regardless so we're like cool so we we we get there and we get
- 1:06:30So the show's at the candy factory on the Vegas Strip, it was at the candy factory.
- 1:06:36And upstairs from the candy factory is a room called the Chocolate Lounge.
- 1:06:41So like they would do the show up there.
- 1:06:44So when we got there, Manfred told us that like, we could get anything on the
- 1:06:50menu half off. And he said that.
- 1:06:54It's the same menu as what they have downstairs, but since we're ordering it
- 1:06:57upstairs with the comedy show, everything was half off. So we're like, all right, fuck it, bet.
- 1:07:02So, like, we get there, and he's like, he starts, like, he pulls us to the side,
- 1:07:08and he's like, dude, we haven't had a turnout in, like, a long time.
- 1:07:13He's like, like, it's kind of hit and miss, but y'all are paid regardless.
- 1:07:18So, nigga, me and Javon is like, nigga, I ain't come all the way to Vegas to
- 1:07:21not do the show, nigga. Like, fuck that.
- 1:07:24So just mind you were on the Vegas strip, like we're in front of the Bellagio,
- 1:07:28what's the Bellagio and the Vito or Vito, whatever it is.
- 1:07:33And then like, there's a mall behind us. So like he goes upstairs, I go downstairs.
- 1:07:39We just start grabbing people like, Hey, we're about to do a comedy show upstairs.
- 1:07:42It's free, yada, yada, yada. nigga i literally go
- 1:07:45into the candy factory and i'm like hey look everything y'all
- 1:07:49paying for right here like if y'all go upstairs y'all can get that
- 1:07:52for half off and it's and you get comedy show
- 1:07:55and they're like for real i was like yeah i was like they ain't they ain't gonna
- 1:07:59tell you i was like but just y'all could take that upstairs and you know what
- 1:08:03i'm saying you ain't gotta pay the full price and then like one of the chicks
- 1:08:07was like well who's on i was like i'm performing and my boy.
- 1:08:12And then her partner was like, fuck who's performing.
- 1:08:16If it's half off, we're going.
- 1:08:19So she takes him upstairs. Boom. I go upstairs.
- 1:08:24Javon is recruiting people, got people coming in.
- 1:08:28So, wow. We get about 15, 20 people up in that G thing.
- 1:08:33We get the show going. They get the show popping. Javon kill it. I kill it.
- 1:08:38So at the end of the night, Cynthia comes up to me and, and like,
- 1:08:42I'm, I'm telling business out.
- 1:08:44I'm personally, but whatever, this is how the show came about.
- 1:08:47So she comes up to me and she's like, can, can I talk to you guys after the show?
- 1:08:52And we're like, all right, cool. Yes. And you know, we're thinking we're about
- 1:08:55to get, well, about to pay us. And so like, yeah, cool. So.
- 1:08:59So she pulled me to the side and she's like, look, she's like,
- 1:09:02we've been doing the show now for about a month and a half.
- 1:09:06And she was like, this is the biggest turnout we've ever had.
- 1:09:10She was like, and she was like, I'm not even sure. Like, she was like watching what you guys did.
- 1:09:17She was like, she was like, I've literally been trying to ask him to do that as the host.
- 1:09:23And he just hasn't been doing it. She's like, and I'm not even sure why.
- 1:09:25She's like, you, you, you, you guys don't even live out here.
- 1:09:29And you guys were able to, to what she was like, round up like 20,
- 1:09:3230 people in like, what, 15 minutes.
- 1:09:35And she was like, she was like, so I say all that to say, like,
- 1:09:39how would you feel about, about running the show?
- 1:09:44And I'm just like, lady, we live in Sacramento.
- 1:09:47Like, how the fuck am I going to run a show in Vegas? But I'm a nigga.
- 1:09:51So never know. Always. Yes.
- 1:09:53I was like, am I a nigga? I was like, I was like, I don't know.
- 1:09:57Like if we're going to be coming all the way back and forth,
- 1:09:59like we're probably gonna have to have more, more money.
- 1:10:02Like, I don't know if like the budget that we have right now would cover it back and forth.
- 1:10:06So she's like, all right, what if I, and then she threw out a higher number
- 1:10:10and she was like, what if I could get you?
- 1:10:13She's like, I can try to get you guys this. She's like, but I can for sure get this.
- 1:10:17She was like, but I can try to kick it up and, and, and, and,
- 1:10:20and try to get it. Would you guys be interested in doing it?
- 1:10:24I was like, nigga, yeah. Like, answer it all, always, yes. So, yeah, we said yes, boom.
- 1:10:29So now, at this particular time, we're doing Blessing Bullshit,
- 1:10:34Monday through Friday, the podcast.
- 1:10:37We had the Say It Loud comedy show on Thursday. We were also,
- 1:10:42at this time, doing the Say It Loud Sunday show at Monty's Lounge in Rancho,
- 1:10:48excuse me, which was an open mic.
- 1:10:49Like, shout out to everybody at Monty's Lounge.
- 1:10:54I hate the fact that I'm forgetting motherfuckers' names right now.
- 1:10:57Because my guy with the glasses, big beard, that's my nigga, ran the whole thing.
- 1:11:03And gave me a great opportunity. That was one of the ones where,
- 1:11:08like, the work ethic was there. Just we couldn't get the result right.
- 1:11:12But just thankful for every opportunity that I'll get.
- 1:11:16But we were doing the sale out Sundays. We had the Sailout Comedy Show on Thursday.
- 1:11:21We were doing the Sailout Sunday every first and third Sunday.
- 1:11:25The Sailout Comedy Show is the third Thursday of the month. And we were doing
- 1:11:29the Vegas show every second and fourth Wednesday.
- 1:11:34So we were literally going to Vegas twice a month from Sacramento and we were
- 1:11:39running the show in Las Vegas.
- 1:11:41And we were booking people like the whole nine. Shout out to Chris Sosa.
- 1:11:46Shout out to Kenesha Buss. Shout out to Saul Trujillo, shout out to you, buddy did the show.
- 1:11:51Shout out to DJ Soulja.
- 1:11:54Shout out to Tay Livingston. Shout out to Big Tay. Tay pulled up.
- 1:11:59Melvin Washington and a bunch of other people that came up. Sean Grady.
- 1:12:04So just, yeah, we had the Vegas comedy show, bro.
- 1:12:09It's something that when I think about it now, I didn't put the energy into it.
- 1:12:14Well, not energy, but just I don't think I celebrated that success as well as
- 1:12:18I should have looking back on it now. Cause yeah, we were living,
- 1:12:22me and Javon were living in Sacramento and we were running a show on the Vegas strip and yeah.
- 1:12:29And like, we literally had that thing going for about two, three, three months, I think.
- 1:12:36Like we, we had it going and then just, you know, the money we couldn't,
- 1:12:41it wasn't balancing out.
- 1:12:43And then just you know we was broke
- 1:12:46trying to make it happen but just in hindsight wasn't no
- 1:12:49trying cause niggas was out there every other week and yeah
- 1:12:53slept in cars slept in the train station like
- 1:12:56sometimes got a room like yeah bro the grind was real like we was out there
- 1:13:03Vegas trip shout out to the guy for real for real and yeah some might think
- 1:13:08that story's a bit shady but yeah whatever like what was I supposed to do no
- 1:13:12no No, we all go through that. We all...
- 1:13:16You got to take those opportunities on our journey just because,
- 1:13:19like, that's what you're going to learn from. Like you say, you don't say yes.
- 1:13:21I mean, you don't say no. You say yes, you know, just to see what could happen
- 1:13:25because you're going to take away something that you could learn from it because you.
- 1:13:29Nigga, you don't remember, bro, we literally spent the night in that man's house.
- 1:13:32I remember that. I remember that.
- 1:13:34No, I remember that. I remember that. I remember that. I remember that drive.
- 1:13:39I remember all that shit.
- 1:13:41We spent the night in the nigga's house, bro. I remember we were driving. All three of us.
- 1:13:46I remember i drove the whole way in there but then the one time i like i get
- 1:13:49out the car that we just popped the tire in the back i was like oh oh yeah we
- 1:13:53got the flat on the freeway bro.
- 1:13:56Yeah that's what i'm saying bro talk about it man no he is no we was i know
- 1:14:01i know exactly what you're saying bro like that grinded asshole but you take
- 1:14:04advantage of the opportunity because,
- 1:14:06fucking buddy's like you never know when he's stepping over over this
- 1:14:10story i i i ain't gonna gonna let let him do
- 1:14:13it nah buddy a humble motherfucker i'm not gonna put fuck all
- 1:14:15that we were driving all the way to vegas yes
- 1:14:18buddy was the driver the whole time remember when we seen the carrots
- 1:14:21i was about to say all the fucking carrots on the road like look
- 1:14:24at all these fucking carrots bro so like we're
- 1:14:27on the freeway and like a carrot truck
- 1:14:30like tips over random truck random
- 1:14:34carrot truck so like literally bro the freeway
- 1:14:37is stacked about as high as
- 1:14:40a fucking second grader of carrots literally
- 1:14:43like cars are running over there is
- 1:14:46the rose was orange all orange like because there's
- 1:14:49carrot like we're literally having to drive slow so that
- 1:14:53we can smash the carrots or just we're already driving over the carrots that
- 1:14:58were already smashed and like there was literally people like scuffs like piles
- 1:15:02of carrots pushed off to the the aside the carrots It's tipped over and when
- 1:15:08we were on our way to Vegas, literally,
- 1:15:11fucking the back tire popped.
- 1:15:14And and literally buddy like down the hill like going downhill yeah yeah so
- 1:15:19we literally had to we had to get off into the lane and like i ended up walking
- 1:15:25down the freeway to like block and show that we were changing the tire because
- 1:15:29it was him him and javon like yeah bro we was,
- 1:15:34thugging out there on on the side of the road we we had to put the spare on
- 1:15:38like we either doing in the show, we was asking for tips just to pay for a new
- 1:15:42fucking tire, just to get back.
- 1:15:43You know, speak hard.
- 1:15:47All right, so, fuck it. You know what? If people are going to watch that thing,
- 1:15:52let's give them some free game.
- 1:15:54So, if you're ever on the road, this is my heads up.
- 1:15:58This is my tip to help run your bag up. It's not...
- 1:16:04It's actually polite to ask for a tip when you're performing when you're on the road.
- 1:16:09So when you're on the road, ask for it. Be like, hey, we're on the road.
- 1:16:14We're here from Sacramento.
- 1:16:16Just if you guys enjoyed the show, hey, go ahead and leave us a tip.
- 1:16:20If you're interested, we'll pass a hat around, you know, whatever you can give, you know, da, da, da.
- 1:16:25If you're really good at a sob story, you know, if you want to tell a true one,
- 1:16:28tell a true one. If you want to, you know, paint outside the lines,
- 1:16:31hey, it's your paintbrush.
- 1:16:35So you know there it is there because yes yes
- 1:16:38the hell we did and yes we
- 1:16:41we got an extra tire we got a room we had extra
- 1:16:44food on top of what we got paid to do the gig so get paid young nigga get paid
- 1:16:50yeah out there thugging man for real buddy was out there matter of fact we i
- 1:16:55still got the picture of all of
- 1:16:57us in front of the vegas line me you and javon oh yep yes sir yes sir Uh,
- 1:17:02and then outside of even just like the, the, the Vegas shows,
- 1:17:06like, cause like we, if we're talking about like work and things like that,
- 1:17:09you, you do do a lot of producing and things like that. Producing a lot of shows,
- 1:17:13a lot of shows you're always.
- 1:17:15Even like with the weed show. Right.
- 1:17:18Smoking jokes. Smoking jokes. You were doing a show. Were you doing a show before smoking jokes?
- 1:17:24No. A weed show? Nah. We were just. Nah.
- 1:17:28Like I had did like shows where like. Oh, nah.
- 1:17:33I want to say. No. Yes. Yes. Oh, no, no, no, no, no. No, that's.
- 1:17:37You're right. Yes, we did.
- 1:17:39We had did cannabis and comedy. Yeah. Cannabis and comedy. That wasn't me, Javon.
- 1:17:46Shout out to King Life, me, Javon, King Life, and some other little weed vendors, Corey Calvert, Amy.
- 1:17:54We were putting together like weed and comedy shows where you could like smoke weed after the show.
- 1:18:00There were vendors there so you could get your cannabis needs and whatnot,
- 1:18:05as well as enjoy live comedy.
- 1:18:08Fast forward we we did a couple shows it was hit and miss fast forward to the
- 1:18:13pandemic the pandemic happened the whole world was shut down and one of the
- 1:18:18guys who was putting on private,
- 1:18:21like cannabis pop-up shows he had we had toyed with the idea of collaborating
- 1:18:26to do like a cannabis and comedy show and just you know we had just it was something
- 1:18:30we just kind of kept bullshitting with each other like yeah i'll talk to you
- 1:18:33about it i'll talk to you about it you know and see us in passing.
- 1:18:35Then the fucking pandemic happened and we was like, he was like,
- 1:18:38so you don't want to do it? I was like, fuck yeah, I'm tired of being inside
- 1:18:40my house. Like, I'm ready to do comedy wherever.
- 1:18:43Excuse me. So, he, seeing as he had the pop-up venue, he was seeing a healthy turnout of, of people.
- 1:18:51So on his end, he would market the show and I would book the,
- 1:18:55the lineup, put the comedy together.
- 1:18:58Boom. So, when we started doing the first one, it was called the Smoking Joke
- 1:19:03Show. It was smoking jokes.
- 1:19:05During the pandemic, we were actually doing two shows. When it first started,
- 1:19:09we were doing an early show at 7.30, and then we were doing a late show at 9.30.
- 1:19:15But weed heads, that 7.30 show would always start at like 8,
- 1:19:20and then the 9.30 show would fucking around start at like 10 or 11.
- 1:19:23Or no, I want to say we started off doing it at 9 and 11.30.
- 1:19:28Because we were doing an early show and a late show. But then we started doing the early show earlier.
- 1:19:32But when we first started doing it, we were doing two shows a night every other Friday.
- 1:19:38Every second and fourth Friday, we were doing that Smoking Dork show,
- 1:19:42which was, yeah, we was getting a nice little turnout. It was comedy and cannabis.
- 1:19:47And just basically, you know, for people that indulge in cannabis,
- 1:19:51you can smoke and enjoy the live show.
- 1:19:53Put on some great comics, too. Even put on people that you might not have expected
- 1:19:57to see in that type of an environment.
- 1:20:00They were on the flyer, so I guess, you know.
- 1:20:04Yeah, I guess they'll perform. Well, no, they perform.
- 1:20:07They just weren't people you would have expected to see in that environment.
- 1:20:11Oh, like the smoking environment? Yeah. Because they're not, okay.
- 1:20:15Lance did. Lance and Mikey Winfield did the show.
- 1:20:19Oh, yeah, they don't smoke at all. Not at all. Not at all.
- 1:20:23Matter of fact, we tried to book Kyrie, but Kyrie left because it was too cloudy for him.
- 1:20:29He was like, bro, I can't do this. He was like, it's too thick in here.
- 1:20:33But yeah, it was like shit. Lance, for the people that were there when Lance
- 1:20:40was there, Lance went crazy.
- 1:20:41Lance was stupid. We literally had to pull Lance off the stage. Shout out to Rico.
- 1:20:47Like, Lance went in.
- 1:20:51Lance was literally killing for, like, two straight hours, bro.
- 1:20:56Lance was... Yeah, he could do it. Yeah. Lance was... We literally had to pull him off the stage.
- 1:21:02That shit was... People was laughing the whole time.
- 1:21:05They was like, let him go! We was like, nah. We was like, bruh,
- 1:21:09he done already, like, bruh, this shit is 1 in the morning, nigga.
- 1:21:12This nigga still cooking. Like, the hell? Like, shit.
- 1:21:15Lance will go on a Chappelle run. Fuck outta here.
- 1:21:19But, yeah, shout out to the Smoke Mugga Joke family. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:21:22Shout out to everybody. everybody that was affiliated with the Smokin' Jokes show.
- 1:21:27What made you want to do, like, do a smoking show?
- 1:21:30Because, I mean, even though, like you said, it was during the pandemic,
- 1:21:32it didn't necessarily have to be, like, a weed show.
- 1:21:36What is it that made you just want to go out there and do something different?
- 1:21:40You want to know what? At the time, we were doing the Bunsen Bullshit thing,
- 1:21:43where we were just kind of smoking on, you know, it was just a podcast.
- 1:21:47The funny thing was that it just kind of happened.
- 1:21:52Like, it wasn't something that we were necessarily trying to do.
- 1:21:54It's just that we were smoking on the thing and we would talk about like who
- 1:22:00or where we got the weed from.
- 1:22:02So if there were particular, you know, vendors or companies that we had got
- 1:22:08it from, we'd give them a shout out.
- 1:22:10And then that kind of opened one door that opened another door.
- 1:22:13And then the conversation about just collaborating about doing a comedy show
- 1:22:18with people that their business was, you know, providing people's medicinal cannabis needs.
- 1:22:26So like on my end, my specialty was throwing comedy shows on their end.
- 1:22:32Their thing was I got a bunch of people that like to buy weed and I think it
- 1:22:35would be cool if they had somewhere where they could enjoy their weed and get
- 1:22:39some laughs. So, and then just in general, like, as the laws have changed throughout
- 1:22:45the time, like, you know what I'm saying?
- 1:22:46It's, it's become a lot more, it's a, it's a lot less of a regulated environment.
- 1:22:54Like, you have more opportunities to be open about the fact that that might
- 1:22:58be something that you engage in.
- 1:23:00And so as marijuana has become legal, you know, you kind of realize you might
- 1:23:04have been ahead of the curve with some of the things that you were doing.
- 1:23:06Because, like, I saw that on the bill now. Like, there you go.
- 1:23:10There's petitions for like legalized cannabis bars where right now you can go
- 1:23:15to the bar, to a cannabis bar and you can indulge in smoking. With cannabis, yeah.
- 1:23:20Yeah. So just on the one hand, me and the people that we were rocking with,
- 1:23:24we might've been ahead of our time with all that.
- 1:23:27But yeah, like the one thing I will say though about like cannabis environments
- 1:23:32versus like alcohol environments is that in all of the cannabis environments I've been to,
- 1:23:40the threat for violence isn't
- 1:23:43really there you know i'm saying like the fact that
- 1:23:46everybody's smoking weed everybody's either to themselves or they're super chill
- 1:23:50or like they're like hippies you know what i'm saying so for the most part they're
- 1:23:55on they're on a love vibe and then everybody here doesn't want to blow the spot
- 1:24:00up you feel me so it's not like a bar where.
- 1:24:04Or like a music environment where everybody might
- 1:24:07be there to fucking turn up you know what i'm saying so like in most
- 1:24:10cases the environment tends to be more relaxed
- 1:24:14friendly so just and
- 1:24:18then like i will say the difference between a weed crowd and an alcohol crowd
- 1:24:22is that the weed crowds get the jokes a little slower saying like that delayed
- 1:24:28reaction yeah yeah so you gotta ease up with the punch lines a little bit don't
- 1:24:33don't get too creative because you might lose them but yeah Yeah,
- 1:24:36it was just an idea that I think that people on their end were good at what they were good at,
- 1:24:44and then they felt I was good at something on my end, so I collabed the two.
- 1:24:48So it was dope. What do you think is that testament to being able to,
- 1:24:51because that's one thing with, say, with comedians, is being able to have that
- 1:24:56relationship with them.
- 1:24:58With the venue owner to make that relationship work with doing something that,
- 1:25:04you know, they may not be used to.
- 1:25:06Because if you're even, like, if we're talking about for the aspect,
- 1:25:08like, let's say, like, your business, you handle the business end.
- 1:25:11I'm going to handle the comedy end. What are some of those things that you learned
- 1:25:15from being able to, like, you're that person that's talking to these venue owners
- 1:25:20and being able to maintain good relationships with them?
- 1:25:28Well, the first thing is that I look at if we're able to get a friendship,
- 1:25:34that's an added bonus, right?
- 1:25:37Like, I never go into a business deal looking to be friends,
- 1:25:42like, because at the end of the day, like, you're not my friend.
- 1:25:45We don't know each other. Like, there's not a real, we don't know each other. Like, we're both here.
- 1:25:51Our mutual agreement is making money, right? Right.
- 1:25:54So I try to keep the main thing, the main thing, which is how do we make money together?
- 1:25:59You know what I'm saying? And whatever our agreed upon split is, et cetera, et cetera.
- 1:26:05So like I mentioned with the Say It Loud comedy show, like before I even had
- 1:26:10my first show, I heard from what a business owner wanted from the business.
- 1:26:18And also on their end, what they do that makes them successful.
- 1:26:24Right. So like at the end of the day, you're supposed to make money.
- 1:26:29Now, no matter how much I might like you, if I'm not making any money with you,
- 1:26:34then like, you know, whatever.
- 1:26:37This is this is just a time yeah you know what i'm saying so
- 1:26:40like i keep the main thing the main thing which
- 1:26:43is i focus on how do we produce revenue
- 1:26:46on said night for said amount of time for whatever so i keep the main thing
- 1:26:53the main thing and just on my end i try to make sure that whatever i say i'm
- 1:26:57going to do i follow through on and if not over deliver like i'm punctual.
- 1:27:04I make sure that like, whatever I'm doing, I'm open about it.
- 1:27:08So like from the creation of the flyer, like just everything I'm,
- 1:27:12I'm, I believe in clear community, clear communication upfront or in the process,
- 1:27:19because I don't want to wait until it's the night of,
- 1:27:22and then get hit with something unexpected,
- 1:27:25nor do I want the people I'm dealing with to feel like I'm giving them something
- 1:27:29unexpected last minute.
- 1:27:31So like I mentioned with being in a group, right, you want to make sure that
- 1:27:36your bad habits don't become somebody else's bad habits.
- 1:27:40And then when you're thinking about a group dynamic, you want to make sure that
- 1:27:43on your end, you've covered all of your, your bases.
- 1:27:46So just, if nothing else, I'm not going to be the problem in this business arrangement.
- 1:27:51Like if we're trying something and it doesn't work, then I mean, it just doesn't work.
- 1:27:56But if it doesn't work, it's because the business didn't work.
- 1:28:01And we can, and on the flip, we can actually walk away friends because we can
- 1:28:07agree that this isn't working.
- 1:28:08Yeah. Whereas, you know, because we're friends, we're continuing to do this failed experiment.
- 1:28:15Now you just fill it with resentment. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:28:18So every time you see me, I'm, I'm a reminder of this failed thing that we're still doing.
- 1:28:24So it's like, so on, on my end, whoever I'm, I'm, I'm doing business with,
- 1:28:29I try to get a clear understanding of what it is they want from me on my end.
- 1:28:34And if it's something I feel I'm capable of doing, then I agree to it.
- 1:28:39If it's not something I feel I'm capable of doing, then I don't do it.
- 1:28:43Unlike other people, I'm okay with walking away from a deal.
- 1:28:46Like I'm not going to, like I've taken bad deals and then I've,
- 1:28:49I've taken bad deals just cause I wanted to take a deal.
- 1:28:52And then I've also taken deals that were, you know, negotiated and then just
- 1:28:58all in all, like there's always going to be a winning give and take.
- 1:29:03Cause just at the end of the day, like I'm not a big enough name to have demands, right?
- 1:29:09So it's all negotiating, but just even with the negotiating,
- 1:29:13you can get your demands met up front, which is, this is what I'm going to do.
- 1:29:20If this isn't what you're interested in, then no thank you.
- 1:29:23Which for the most part, like before I had the Say It Loud comedy show or when
- 1:29:28I was shopping, doing comedy, like, you know, people thought I was trying to
- 1:29:32do a rap show and I'm literally like, no, I don't rap.
- 1:29:35And then so just change the whole perception
- 1:29:40that you had because like what your perception
- 1:29:43was was i was about to bring a bunch of weed smoking hennessy motherfuckers
- 1:29:47in here to like basically possibly be some gang shit like you know you know
- 1:29:51what i'm saying like you're thinking the whole rap you're thinking they think
- 1:29:54about all the negative things that come with a rap show and i'm like well first
- 1:29:59of all i don't even do music and i actually do comedy so like Like,
- 1:30:03the whole type of people I'm going to invite to your venue,
- 1:30:09even if they are that type of person, they're not going to be that type of person
- 1:30:13on that night. Yeah, we're not bringing that energy.
- 1:30:15Comedy's not the environment you go to to create chaos.
- 1:30:19You know what I'm saying? It's an art form where you're coming to sit,
- 1:30:24listen, laugh, listen, laugh, sit.
- 1:30:28It like at no point does this does the
- 1:30:32at no point is the audience required to
- 1:30:35like dance and give it energy like literally all you're
- 1:30:37supposed to do is sit and listen to it if it's funny you'll
- 1:30:40laugh if not you'll you know wait for the next person to
- 1:30:43do it better so y'all are supposed to talk but they still do it anyways but
- 1:30:47that's on them now right yeah it would be a fuck around and get lit up but just
- 1:30:51yeah so to answer the question just yeah keep keep the main thing the main thing
- 1:30:56and and have a clear understanding of what the main thing is and everything
- 1:31:02else will work itself out.
- 1:31:04So, yeah, before we do a wrap up this episode, like I said, we do play this
- 1:31:07game at the end of every show called, you know, the Mount Rushmore.
- 1:31:11Mount Rushmore is just your four convenient inspirations that have,
- 1:31:15you know, motivated you or, you know, you feel are the greatest in what they do.
- 1:31:20Bet. So, yeah, we, we, we, we had this conversation on the phone.
- 1:31:24So like, all right, bet. So, I'm going to give you, so, like,
- 1:31:28I'll give you my childhood teenage four.
- 1:31:33Mm-hmm. Then I'll give you, like, my four...
- 1:31:38My four that as an adult, they're my four like icons or whatever,
- 1:31:44or the four right now that I think are the greatest.
- 1:31:46And then I'll give you the four that my personal favorites of people that I've worked with.
- 1:31:52I bet. So as a kid, my Mount Rushmore, Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence, Bernie.
- 1:32:00And this one's going to, so Bernie, Eddie, Martin, and this fourth one's going
- 1:32:05to throw everybody off. Andrew Dice Clay.
- 1:32:10Like I liked, I liked how,
- 1:32:13uh, masculine and how machismo like he, like he, like his persona,
- 1:32:20like he's a bad-ass and like, I liked, I liked his aura as a kid.
- 1:32:26I liked the fact that he was like, he was an asshole.
- 1:32:28He wasn't trying to be your friend and just shut up and listen.
- 1:32:32So like that, that part of it. So like as a kid, I was a big dice fan.
- 1:32:36So those four are the kid as an adult, Dave, Tony rock, excuse me, Dave,
- 1:32:47Tony Roberts, excuse me, Dave, Tony Roberts, cat, cat Williams,
- 1:32:54Dave Chappelle, cat Williams, Tony Roberts, Deon Cole, Deon Cole's father.
- 1:33:01So those are my four favorites as an adult.
- 1:33:04My Mount Rushmore of personal people that I have met and worked with.
- 1:33:12I can't say Tony again. Sorry, I said Tony, a legend.
- 1:33:17But personally, Mikey. Mikey's one of the dopest motherfuckers I ever saw.
- 1:33:24Riggins. Definitely Chris Riggins.
- 1:33:31Well, yeah, shit. Lance and Curry, like, shit. Like, those would be,

- 1:34:25just named and stuff like that,
- 1:34:27like they could like be like legit like
- 1:34:30other people's like mount rushmore's like guns just
- 1:34:33because there's just just going back to how you say elder there's just a
- 1:34:36lot of a lot of strong comedians out here and not only sacramento but like i
